Blink-182 Reunite With Tom DeLonge for Massive World Tour and New Music

Mark Hoppus lied. Back in August, after Tom DeLonge shared a photograph of his former Blink-182 bandmates, tagging both Hoppus and Travis Barker , the bassist and singer took to social media to insist that the band wasn’t reuniting, much to the dismay of their fans. But the band announced today that not only is Blink-182 back with a massive world tour , but DeLonge will also return to the lineup for the first time in nearly a decade. And to top it off, they are releasing a new single, “Edging,” out Friday.

The band made the announcement in true Blink-182 fashion — with a raunchy, suggestive social media post that could give someone a very wrong impression if it were to be played too loud in public. “We’re coming. Tour’s coming. Album’s coming. Tom’s coming,” they wrote alongside a minute-long announcement visual.

The tour begins March 11 in Latin America with support from Wallows and spans through April 2. In May, the North American leg supported by Turnstile will begin in Minnesota. The band will make stops in Chicago, Montreal, Brooklyn, Hershey, San Diego, Austin, Atlanta, and more before wrapping in Nashville on July 16. The Story So Far will accompany Blink-182 on the European leg beginning Sept. 6 and concluding on Oct. 15. In February 2024, the band will head to Australia and New Zealand with Rise Against.

General sale begins Monday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. local time via the official Blink-182 website . Blink-182 will also headline Lollapalooza 2023 alongside Billie Eilish and Drake in addition to the 2023 edition of We Were Young Festival alongside Green Day and more.

Blink-182 Reunite With Tom DeLonge, Announce 2023 Tour

By Evan Minsker and Jazz Monroe

Blink182s Mark Hoppus Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker

Blink-182 have reunited with founding member Tom DeLonge and announced a 2023 tour. The classic lineup of DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker will also release a comeback single called “Edging” on Friday (October 14). Check out the tour dates, which include North American shows with support from Turnstile, at the bottom of the page, and watch the characteristically juvenile announcement video below. The band will release a new album next year, according to a press release.

DeLonge started Blink-182 with Mark Hoppus in 1992. Their debut album, Cheshire Cat , arrived in 1995, followed by the “Dammit”-featuring album Dude Ranch in 1997. After original drummer Scott Raynor was dismissed from the band in 1998, Travis Barker came aboard in time to record the band’s multi-platinum 1999 album Enema of the State , which featured the hit singles “What’s My Age Again?” and “All the Small Things.”

Their first No. 1 album in the United States followed, 2001’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket . In 2002, DeLonge and Barker released a side project as a duo, a self-titled Box Car Racer album. The following year, Blink-182 released a self-titled album before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2005.

DeLonge focused on his band Angels & Airwaves, which released their debut album in 2006, while Barker became a prolific session drummer, particularly in the worlds of pop-punk and hip-hop. In 2008, Barker was involved in a plane crash that led to the trio returning for a reunion tour in 2009. In 2011, Blink-182 released Neighborhoods and they continued to tour in the early 2010s before DeLonge departed the band in early 2015.

Hoppus and Barker discussed DeLonge’s departure in an interview with Rolling Stone at the time, saying that after the band signed a recording contract and booked a studio for album sessions, Hoppus and Barker received emails from DeLonge’s management announcing that he was leaving the band. “To be honest, I wasn’t that surprised because his attitude leading up to that had been not excited and not interested,” Hoppus said. Barker called DeLonge “disrespectful and ungrateful” to have his manager break the news and not call them himself. “Why Blink even got back together in the first place is questionable,” Barker said.

Following DeLonge’s departure, Blink-182 hired Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba. They released two albums under that lineup: 2016’s California and 2019’s Nine . The band toured consistently in the late 2010s, too, and was booked to perform at the famously doomed Fyre Festival.

During his time away from the group, DeLonge has continued recording with Angels & Airwaves. He has notably committed much of his time to the study of aliens, UFOs, and conspiracy theories. He founded the company To the Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2015 and was the executive producer behind the History Channel series Unidentified: Inside America’s UFO Investigation . In 2020, the Pentagon declassified UFO videos that DeLonge’s company had previously shared.

In the recent past, Barker has become something of an omnipresent cultural and tabloid figure. He has collaborated with Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly, Willow, and XXXTentacion, to name a few. In May 2022, he married Kourtney Kardashian.

Since 2019, Hoppus has been hosting the Apple Music 1 radio show After School Radio . In 2021, he revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer; later that year, he said he was cancer free . In an August 2022 interview with People , Hoppus revealed that DeLonge and Barker visited him before he started chemotherapy. “It was the first time that all three of us were in the same room in, like, five years,” Hoppus said. “It’s actually better than it used to be. There was no agenda. There were no lingering grudges. It felt very back to what it should be: three friends sitting in a room.… Everybody’s in a really great place right now.”

Blink-182 reuniting for massive 2023 world tour, new song coming Friday

The group also has a new single coming Oct. 14.

Blink-182 announced their biggest tour ever, with Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker reuniting for the first time in nearly 10 years.

After wiping their website and Instagram clean yesterday, seemingly in preparation for some big news, Blink-182 has come through with a major announcement: Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker are reuniting for a massive 2023 world tour.

The trio have also made some new music: Their new song, "Edging," will be out this Friday.

The band made the announcement in a very on-brand double entendre-filled video .

The tour starts in Latin America in March 2023 with the band Wallows as the opening act. North American tour dates start May 4 in St. Paul, Minnesota, with the band Turnstile opening.

That leg of the tour wraps up July 16 in Nashville, Tennessee. The band will then head to Europe in September with The Story So Far as openers, and Australia/New Zealand in 2024 with Rise Against on the bill.

The tour also includes an Oct. 12, 2023 appearance at the When We Were Young festival, and appearances at Lollapalooza Argentina, Lollapalooza Chile and Lollapalooza Brazil.

Tickets go on sale Monday, Oct. 17, 2022 at 10 a.m. local time at blink182.com.

The band's return to the stage is significant, considering its members have been dealing with a lot in their personal lives: Bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus has been continuing to recover from his 2021 cancer battle, while drummer Travis Barker was hospitalized earlier this year with pancreatitis.

Blink-182 Has Reunited (Again)

Tom DeLonge is back, baby.

preview for Food Diaries with Travis Barker

Blink-182 announced its reunion in a bizarre YouTube video titled, "WE ARE COMING! to a city near you!" that featured parody drug commercial testimonials about fans excited to "see the band come." The innuendo is not lost. "If they come, I'm going to explode," one person says. "With Delonge back after nearly a decade, fans can expect that electric on-stage magic that the trio has delivered over the years," a press release from the band read. "With their new album due in 2023, ‘blink-182’ is stoked to be facing their future together."

The band has gone through quite a lot in the last decade. After Tom DeLonge quit to pursue his search for UFOs, he was replaced by Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba for nearly five years and two studio albums. DeLonge later retracted that he quit indefinitely and joked in an interview with Esquire that everyone must have thought he " lost his mind" and "quit his band to chase aliens." In a way, he did do that, but not everyone who straps on the tin foil hat actually gets name-dropped by the Pentagon. Throughout 2019 and 2020, The U.S. Department of Defense declassified three videos about UFOs brought to light by DeLonge's work. "They mentioned my name and stuff,” he said back in 2021. "Like: it is crazy.”

In the meantime, Travis Barker collaborated with popular artists such as Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly, Trippie Redd, and Willow. After Hoppus was diagnosed with cancer in June 2021, the trio met, opened up about personal issues, and made up. "I was really, feverishly wanting to show Mark some of these things that I've learned and I know," DeLonge told Esquire at the time. He described a healer he learned about who cured lab mice of terminal cancer through Native American rain dances and visualizations of love. Hoppus was declared cancer-free later that year, and rumors speculated that a happy Blink-182 meant potentially happy Blink-182 fans in the near future. Now, they're ready to embark on a massive tour. I'll be there dressed in the worst 90s fashion imaginable, channeling a Southern California pop-punk accent to "na-na-na-na" until they have to turn the lights off and carry me home.

blink-182 Announce Massive 2023 World Tour, Tom DeLonge Is Back in the Band

The band is also releasing a brand new studio album

blink-182 2023 tour Tom DeLonge

blink-182 have reunited with guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge for a massive 2023 world tour tour. The original trio – bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus, drummer Travis Barker, and DeLonge – will kick off the trek on March 11, 2023, at Imperial GNP in Tijuana, Mexico. The shows mark their first-ever performances in Latin America.

The North American leg begins on May 4, 2023 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. The band will perform in Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Dallas, and many more cities. From there, the band will head to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. See the full tour itinerary below.

Tickets go on sale Monday, October 17 at 10am via blink182.com . “We’re coming. Tour’s coming. Album’s coming. Tom’s coming,” the band stated. Check out the group’s hilarious tour announcement video below.

Turnstile will serve as special guests at the North American shows. The Story So Far will accompany blink-182 on the European leg. Rise Against are tagging along for the performances in Australia and New Zealand.

Additionally, the group has recorded a brand new studio album. The record’s first singe “Edging” arrives this Friday, October 14. Fans can pre-add and pre-save the song now HERE .

Next year marks the 20th anniversary of blink-182’s 2003 self-titled album. Released via Geffen, the platinum-selling record would be the band’s last before a lengthy hiatus. They regrouped in 2011 and released  Neighborhoods , which is the band’s final LP to date with Tom DeLonge.

Tom DeLonge blink-182

On October 6, Troy Hanson, Cumulus Media’s Vice President of Corporate Programming for Rock Formats, confirmed that DeLonge had officially rejoined blink-182 and that the band was planning a full-scale North American arena tour. Hanson broke the news on the Q101’s Brian, Ali & Justin Podcast – Chicago’s alternative rock radio staton.

“Tom DeLonge has rejoined blink-182 and they are coming to the United Center,” Hanson stated.

blink-182  parted ways with DeLonge  back in January of 2015. Unsurprisingly, there were conflicting reports about how the situation unfolded. The band recruited Alkaline Trio frontman Matt Skiba to fill in after DeLonge’s departure.

“We were all set to play this festival and record a new album and Tom kept putting it off without reason,” the band said in a statement at the time. “A week before we were scheduled to go in to the studio we got an email from his manager explaining that he didn’t want to participate in any Blink-182 projects indefinitely, but would rather work on his other non-musical endeavors. “No hard feelings, but the show must go on for our fans.”

“To all the fans, I never quit the band,” DeLonge said on his social media at the time. “I actually was on a phone call about a blink-182 event for New York City at the time all these weird press releases started coming in. Apparently those releases were ‘sanctioned’ from the band. Are we dysfunctional, yes. But, Christ.”

Last June, blink-182 bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He had started chemotherapy treatments three months prior. Before he began his treatment, he had a visit with blink bandmate Barker and then-former guitarist DeLonge.

“It was the first time that all three of us were in the same room in, like, five years,” Hoppus told  Billboard  back in August. “It’s actually better than it used to be. There was no agenda. There were no lingering grudges. It felt very back to what it should be: three friends sitting in a room.”

Blink-182 Reunite for a 2023 World Tour

Tom DeLonge is reuniting with Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker for a blink-182 world tour – their first tour together in almost a decade. The reunited trio will also release a new single, “Edging,” on Friday, October 14, 2022, and are dropping a new album in 2023.

The 2023-2024 world tour is blink-182’s biggest tour and will kick off in Tijuana, Mexico on March 11th. Stops in Latin America will be followed by the North America leg of their tour, beginning on May 4th in St. Paul, MN. Additional North American cities include Detroit, New York, Dallas, and San Diego (of course) before finishing up the leg in Nashville on July 16th.

A September 2nd stop in Glasgow kicks off the leg focused on Europe. Australian and New Zealand fans can look forward to blink-182 performing in various cities in February 2023.

Tickets for the Live Nation tour will go on sale on October 17, 2022 at 10am local time via blink182.com .

Blink 182 world tour 2023 support acts: who is supporting Tom DeLonge and Co in Madrid and UK dates?

Turnstile, Rise Against, The Story So Far and Wallows will be supporting Blink-182 at different points during World Tour 2023-2024

Tom DeLonge has returned to Blink-182 and the band are hitting the road for a massive world tour.

The band, which released new single Edging last year, will be hitting the road in 2023 and 2024. Blink will be playing shows across the globe from North America to Europe and the UK and even Australia.

The next stop on the tour will take place at the WiZink Center in Madrid . on Tuesday, 3 October.

The return of DeLonge marks a return to Blink-182’s most successful line-up, with Tom, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker. The trio were responsible for 1999’s Enema of the State which has sold more than 15 million copies around the world, as well as 2001’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, 2003’s self-titled album and 2011’s Neighbourhoods.

The line-up of DeLonge, Hoppus and Barker was the second incarnation of the band, following the departure of original drummer Scott Raynor in 1998. Between 2015 and 2022, Alkaline Trio lead singer Matt Skiba replaced DeLonge in the band.

But when the band hit the road in 2023 and 2024, they will not be alone. A number of support acts have already been announced for the world tour. Here is all you need to know:

Who are the support acts for the Blink-182 world tour?

The world tour will run from 11 March 2023 until 26 February 2024, lasting just shy of a year. During that time the band will play 71 shows, including 34 in North America and 21 in Europe.

Four support acts for the tour have already been announced by DeLonge, Hoppus and Barker. Blink-182 will be joined by Turnstile, Rise Against, The Story So Far and Wallows for different legs of the tour.

Each of the four support acts will play a run of shows either in Latin America, North America, Europe and the UK and Oceania. Blink-182 have confirmed which legs the support acts will be appearing on.

Who will be supporting Blink-182 in Europe and the UK?

Modern pop-punk giants The Story So Far will be the support act for the European leg of the world tour. Including playing all of the dates in the UK.

The band is best known for songs such as Clairvoyant, Empty Space, Nerve and Keep This Up. So far the group have released four albums - 2011’s Under Soil and Dirt, 2013’s What You Don’t See, 2015’s self-titled album and 2018’s Proper Dose.

The Story So Far will actually be touring the UK in November of this year with fellow Blink-182 support act Rise Against. The bands will play shows in London, Manchester and Birmingham.

Tickets for the UK tour dates go on sale on Monday (17 October) morning and are available for purchase from Ticketmaster .

Who is the support act for Blink-182 in North America?

Hardcore punk band Turnstile will be the opening act for DeLonge, Hoppus and Barker during the North American leg of the tour in 2023. Playing all 34 dates between 4 May and 16 July.

The band released its third album Glow On in 2021 to critical acclaim, with Spin naming it the best album of the year. Turnstile played a slot at Glastonbury Festival in England in 2022.

On Spotify, the most group’s most popular songs are: Mystery, Blackout, Holiday, Underwater Boi and Alien Love Call - all have 9 million streams or more.

2018’s album Time & Space also achieve critical acclaim upon release.

When will Rise Against support Blink-182?

The punk rock stalwarts will be teaming up with Blink-182 for the Oceania leg of the tour. Rise Against will play all of the shows in Australia and New Zealand.

Formed in 1999, Rise Against have been a mainstay of the punk scene during the 21st century. The band saw its popularity rise following the release of songs like Swing Life Away and Saviour. The later of which broke the record for the most consecutive weeks spent on both the Hot Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts in the United States.

Rise Against’s track Prayer of the Refugee was featured on the soundtrack of Guitar Hero III upon its release in 2007. It proved to be a commercial success and the track has been certified platinum.

When will Wallows support Blink-182?

Wallows is an alternative rock trio featuring actor Dylan Minnette, who played Clay Jensen in Netflix’s hit series 13 Reasons Why, as well as Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston. The band has been releasing songs since 2017.

The group’s first release was Pleaser which reached number two on the Spotify Global Viral 50 chart. After signing with major label Atlantic Record, Wallows released their debut album Nothing Happens in 2019 and it was followed by 2022’s Tell Me That It’s Over.

Wallows have been announced to be supporting Blink-182 during the Latin America stint of the world tour in March 2023.

More Rise Against

Gold and Platinum-selling punk rockers Rise Against will return to Australia in February 2024, opening a whopping 17 shows in Australia and New Zealand for blink-182 .

Today, in addition to those massive stadium/arena dates, Rise Against have announced two headline gigs in Melbourne and Sydney – their sole headline dates down under this summer. Special guests will be announced soon.

Before the blink-182 tour starts on Thursday, 8 February, at RAC Arena in Perth, the iconic Chicago four-piece will bring their thrilling live shows to two theatres: the Forum in Melbourne on Sunday, 4 February, and Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Monday, 5 February.

The general sale begins on Tuesday, 14 November, at noon AEDT, while Frontier Members can access pre-sale tickets on Monday, 13 November, at 11 am local time. You can register here for access to pre-sale tickets. Tickets will be available via the Frontier Touring website .

Rise Against are touring in support of two companion releases, the 2021 album Nowhere Generation and 2022’s follow-up EP Nowhere Generation II . Reviving the band’s renowned brand of propulsive, empowering, impassioned punk rock, the group collaborated with producer Bill Stevenson ( The Descendents, Black Flag ) on the new album.

In a review of this year’s When We Were Young festival, The Music writer Tamara May watched on as Yellowcard vocalist William Ryan Key joined Rise Against singer Tim McIlrath for an emotional rendition of Swing Life Away . Reviewing Nowhere Generation , Kill Your Stereo writer Alex Sievers summarised :

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Nowhere Generation is unapologetically timely, embodying three generations who feel unheard, overlooked and left behind when it comes to climate and economic stability of the future that they will endure instead of the decision-makers, filthy rich CEO's and politicians who will die before the ramifications of those actions come due. The future is bleak, but it is also unwritten, and it's high time for us all to band together to help make it an equal, brighter reality. Rise Against's latest body of work is a reminder of that cause.

It’s difficult to argue against the standing, consistent power and durability of Rise Against.

Russian offensive campaign assessment, march 27, 2024.

Click here to access ISW’s archive of interactive time-lapse maps of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These maps complement the static control-of-terrain map that ISW produces daily by showing a dynamic frontline. ISW will update this time-lapse map archive monthly.

Note: The data cut-off for this product was 2:15pm ET on March 27. ISW will cover subsequent reports in the March 28 Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) released its 38th report on the human rights situation in Ukraine on March 26, confirming several of ISW’s longstanding assessments about Russia’s systematic violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in occupied territories and towards Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs). [1] The HRMMU report details activities between December 1, 2023 and February 29 2024, and includes new findings about Russia’s abuse of Ukrainian POWs during this timeframe, based on interviews with 60 recently released male POWs. [2] Nearly all of the POWs that HRMMU interviewed detailed how they were tortured by Russian forces with beatings and electric shocks and threatened with execution, and over half of the interviewees experienced sexual violence. HRMMU also reported that it has evidence of Russian forces executing at least 32 POWs in 12 different incidents during the reporting period and independently verified three of the executions. ISW observed open-source evidence of several POW executions during this reporting period: the execution of three Ukrainian POWs near Robotyne, Zaporizhia Oblast on December 27, 2023; the execution of one Ukrainian POW near Klishchiivka, Donetsk Oblast on February 9, 2024; the executions of three Ukrainian POWs near Robotyne, the execution of six Ukrainian POWs near Avdiivka, Donetsk Oblast, and the executions of two Ukrainian POWs near Vesele, Donetsk Oblast on or around February 18, 2024; and the execution of nine Ukrainian POWs near Ivanivske, Donetsk Oblast, on February 25. [3] The summary execution and mistreatment of POWs is a violation of Article 3 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War. [4] The HRMMU report also details the forced Russification of Ukrainian populations in occupied areas, including the imposition of Russian political, legal, and administrative systems onto occupied Ukraine in violation of Russia’s international legal obligations as an occupying power. [5] ISW has reported at length on the specifics of Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukraine, consistent with the findings of the UN HRMMU report. [6]

Russian officials are tying the US and the West to a broader set of “terrorist” attacks against Russia following the Crocus City Hall attack, likely to intensify rhetoric about alleged Western and Ukrainian threats to generate greater domestic support for the war in Ukraine. The Russian Investigative Committee and Prosecutor General’s Office stated on March 27 that they will consider an appeal from the Russian State Duma to investigate American and Western financing and organization of terrorist attacks against Russia. [7] The Russian Investigative Committee, Prosecutor General’s Office, and the Duma Deputies that made the appeal did not explicitly reference the Crocus City Hall attack. [8] Kremlin officials have previously tied Ukraine and the West to the Crocus City Hall attack but have yet to make a formal accusation, and the Kremlin may refrain from issuing an official accusation as all available evidence continues to show that the Islamic State (IS) is very likely responsible for the attack. [9] Russian officials routinely describe Ukrainian military strikes against legitimate military targets in occupied Ukraine and Russia as terrorism and consistently claim that Western actors help organize these strikes. [10] The Kremlin likely aims to seize on wider Russian social fears and anger following the Crocus City Hall attack by portraying Ukraine, the US, and the West as immediate terrorist threats. The Kremlin likely hopes that perceptions of Ukrainian and Western involvement in the Crocus City Hall attack will increase domestic support for the war in Ukraine, and Russian officials will likely invoke a broader view of what they consider terrorism to further cast Ukrainians as terrorists and the West as a sponsor of terrorism. [11] The Kremlin may still formally accuse Ukraine of conducting the Crocus City Hall attack if it believes that these other informational efforts are insufficient to generate the domestic response it likely desires. [12]

Russian authorities are increasing legal pressure against migrants in Russia following recent Russian officials’ proposals for harsher, measures against migrant communities in response to the March 22 Crocus City Hall attack. BBC News Russian Service stated that there has been a significant increase in the number of cases related to violations of the rules of entry for foreign citizens into Russia following the Crocus City Hall attack. [13] BBC News Russian Service reported on March 27 that 784 such cases have been registered since the morning of March 25, as compared with 1,106 during the entire previous week. A Russian lawyer who often works with Tajik citizens reportedly told BBC News Russian Service that over 100 people waited for a Moscow district court to hear their cases on March 25 alone and that Russian authorities are especially targeting migrants from Tajikistan during searches. BBC News Russian Service reported that representatives of the Tajik diaspora in Russia are expecting Russian authorities to conduct a large wave of deportations following the Crocus City Hall attack. A Russian insider source claimed on March 27 that unspecified actors gave the Moscow Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) an “unspoken” order to “not spare” migrants and for MVD employees to use their own judgement in the field. [14] The insider source claimed that a source suggested that Russian authorities are not preparing to conduct raids on migrant communities but will apply the “strictest measures” to migrants in “controversial situations.” Kremlin newswire TASS stated on March 27 that Russian police and Rosgvardia conducted a raid at the Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast to check the documents of migrant workers, and Russian opposition outlet Baza reported that Russian authorities detained 21 people during the raid. [15] Several Russian ultranationalist milbloggers complained that the way Russian-language schools in Tajikistan are teaching about Russia’s historical imperial occupation of Tajikistan is discouraging Tajik migrants from integrating into Russian society, essentially blaming migrants for the alienation that Russian society subjects them to. [16] Select Russian officials recently called for the introduction of several anti-migrant policies, which Russian authorities are unlikely to enact given Russia’s reliance on migrants for its force generation and labor needs. [17] Russian authorities may continue the practice of raiding migrant workplaces and increase crackdowns at border crossings to temporarily placate emotional cries for retribution following the March 22 attack as the Kremlin continues to develop a cogent and practical response.

Key Takeaways:

  • The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) released its 38th report on the human rights situation in Ukraine on March 26, confirming several of ISW’s longstanding assessments about Russia’s systematic violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in occupied territories and towards Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs).
  • Russian officials are tying the US and the West to a broader set of “terrorist” attacks against Russia following the Crocus City Hall attack, likely to intensify rhetoric about alleged Western and Ukrainian threats to generate greater domestic support for the war in Ukraine.
  • Russian authorities are increasing legal pressure against migrants in Russia following recent Russian officials’ proposals for harsher, measures against migrant communities in response to the March 22 Crocus City Hall attack.
  • Russian forces recently made confirmed advances near Avdiivka and southwest of Donetsk City on March 27.
  • Russian Storm-Z personnel continue to complain about their poor treatment by the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) as the MoD tries to posture efficacy in its force generation and social benefit allocation system.

We do not report in detail on Russian war crimes because these activities are well-covered in Western media and do not directly affect the military operations we are assessing and forecasting. We will continue to evaluate and report on the effects of these criminal activities on the Ukrainian military and the Ukrainian population and specifically on combat in Ukrainian urban areas. We utterly condemn Russian violations of the laws of armed conflict and the Geneva Conventions and crimes against humanity even though we do not describe them in these reports.

Russian Main Effort – Eastern Ukraine

Russian Subordinate Main Effort #1 – Luhansk Oblast (Russian objective: Capture the remainder of Luhansk Oblast and push westward into eastern Kharkiv Oblast and northern Donetsk Oblast)

Positional engagements continued along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line on March 27, but there were no confirmed changes to the frontline in this area. Ukrainian and Russian sources stated that positional engagements continued northeast of Kupyansk near Synkivka and Lake Lyman; southeast of Kupyansk near Ivanivka; west of Kreminna near Terny and Yampolivka; and south of Kreminna near Bilohorivka. [18] Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces advanced near Terny, but ISW has not observed visual confirmation of this claim. [19] Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov stated that elements of the Chechen Akhmat Spetsnaz “Aida” detachment are operating near Bilohorivka. [20]

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces struck Kharkiv City with a D-30 universal joint glide munition (UMPB), a guided glide bomb, on March 27. [21] Ukrainian officials noted that the strike was the first Russian glide bomb strike against Kharkiv City since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022. [22] Ukrainian Kharkiv Oblast Military Administration Head Oleh Synehubov stated that the UMPB D-30 has a range of up to 90 kilometers and that Russian forces can launch the bomb from aircraft or ground-based Smerch multiple rocket launch systems (MLRS). [23] Russian forces struck Myrnohrad, Donetsk Oblast with three UMPB D-30SN guided glide bombs on March 10. [24]

rise against blink 182 tour 2023

Russian Subordinate Main Effort #2 – Donetsk Oblast (Russian objective: Capture the entirety of Donetsk Oblast, the claimed territory of Russia’s proxies in Donbas)

Russian forces reportedly advanced west of Bakhmut, although there were no confirmed changes to the frontline in the area on March 27. Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces advanced west of Bakhmut along a railway line and a section of the O0506 (Khromove-Chasiv Yar) highway by 1.15 kilometers in depth and 1.85 kilometers in width. [25] A Russian milblogger claimed that elements of the 98th Airborne (VDV) Division are advancing near Ivanivske and are within 500 meters of the city limits of Chasiv Yar (west of Bakhmut). [26] Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu credited elements of the Russian 102nd Motorized Rifle Regiment (150th Motorized Rifle Division, 8th Combined Arms Army [CAA], Southern Military District [SMD]) with seizing Ivanivske on March 24, although ISW has yet to observe visual evidence confirming that Russian forces have seized Ivanivske. [27] Positional fighting continued northeast of Bakhmut near Vesele; northwest of Bakhmut near Bohdanivka; west of Bakhmut near Ivanivske; southwest of Bakhmut near Klishchiivka and Andriivka; and south of Bakhmut near Shumy and Pivdenne. [28] A Ukrainian military observer reported that Russian forces have intensified transfers of equipment and personnel along ground lines of communication (GLOCs) through Kadiivka, Pervomaisk, and Popasna (all east of Bakhmut), but did not specify the destination of these transfers. [29] Kadiivka, Pervomaisk, and Popasna all lie along the T0504 Luhansk City-Bakhmut highway that runs directly from the Russian rear in occupied Luhansk Oblast into Bakhmut, however.

Russian forces recently advanced west of Avdiivka amid continued positional fighting in the area on March 27. Geolocated footage published on March 27 indicates that Russian forces recently advanced within Berdychi (northwest of Avdiivka) and in Orlivka (west of Avdiivka). [30] Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces entered Semenivka (northwest of Avdiivka) and are attacking Ukrainian positions within the settlement but that Ukrainian forces are actively counterattacking in the area. [31] A Russian milblogger claimed that Russian forces advanced 200 meters west of Orlivka on the western bank of the Durna River, 200 meters west of Tonenke (west of Avdiivka), 200 meters in the direction of Umanske (west of Avdiivka), 300 meters south of Tonenke towards Pervomaiske (southwest of Avdiivka), and 100 meters south of Nevelske (southwest of Avdiivka). [32] ISW has not observed visual confirmation of these claims. Positional fighting continued northwest of Avdiivka near Berdychi and Semenivka; west of Avdiivka near Orlivka, Tonenke, and Umanske; and southwest of Avdiivka near Vodyane, Nevelske, and Pervomaiske. [33]

Russian forces recently advanced southwest of Donetsk City amid continued positional fighting west and southwest of Donetsk City on March 27. Geolocated footage published on March 27 indicates that Russian forces recently advanced within central Novomykhailivka (southwest of Donetsk City). [34] Positional fighting continued west of Donetsk City near Heorhiivka and Krasnohorivka and southwest of Donetsk City near Novomykhailivka and Pobieda. [35] Elements of the Russian 5th Motorized Rifle Brigade (1st Donetsk People’s Republic [DNR] Army Corps [AC]) are reportedly operating near Krasnohorivka. [36]

Positional engagements continued south of Velyka Novosilka near Staromayorske and Urozhaine in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area on March 27. [37]

Russian Supporting Effort – Southern Axis (Russian objective: Maintain frontline positions and secure rear areas against Ukrainian strikes)

Positional engagements continued in western Zaporizhia Oblast on March 27, but there were no confirmed changes to the frontline. Positional engagements continued near Robotyne, near Mala Tokmachka (northeast of Robotyne), northeast of Novoprokopivka (south of Robotyne), and northwest of Verbove (east of Robotyne). [38] Elements of the Russian 71st Motorized Rifle Regiment (42nd Motorized Rifle Division, 58th Combined Arms Army [CAA], Southern Military District [SMD]) reportedly continue operating within Robotyne. [39]

Positional engagements continued in east (left) bank Kherson Oblast, including near Krynky, on March 27. [40]

Russian Air, Missile, and Drone Campaign (Russian Objective: Target Ukrainian military and civilian infrastructure in the rear and on the frontline)

Russian forces conducted a series of drone and missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of March 26 to 27 and on March 27. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched 13 Shahed-136/131 drones from Kursk Oblast and that Ukrainian forces shot down 10 drones over Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kyiv oblasts on the night of March 26 to 27. [41] Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drones struck civilian infrastructure in Izyum, Kharkiv Oblast. [42] Ukrainian Kharkiv Oblast Head Oleh Synehubov stated that a Russian Kh-35U subsonic anti-ship cruise missile struck Kharkiv City on the morning of March 27. [43] Ukraine’s Eastern Air Command reported that Ukrainian forces shot down an unspecified Russian cruise missile over Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on March 27. [44] Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces struck an industrial enterprise in Mykolaiv City with an Iskander-M ballistic missile on the afternoon of March 27. [45]

Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command Spokesperson Colonel Nataliya Humenyuk stated that Russian forces have stored “several dozen” Zircon missiles in military facilities in occupied Crimea. [46] Ukrainian Air Force Spokesperson Major Ilya Yevlash stated that Ukrainian air defense systems, such as Patriot and SAMP/T systems, can intercept Zircon missiles when they slow down to about 3,700 kilometers per hour on approach to a target. [47]

Russian Mobilization and Force Generation Efforts (Russian objective: Expand combat power without conducting general mobilization)

Russian Storm-Z personnel continue to complain about their poor treatment by the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) as the MoD tries to present the efficacy of its force generation and social benefit allocation system. Russian opposition outlet Mobilization News posted a video appeal from Storm-Z fighters from Kaluga Oblast on March 27 wherein one fighter claimed that after signing contracts with the Russian MoD, Russian command sent a Storm-Z unit of 230 people to the frontline, of whom only 38 survived combat. [48] The Storm-Z fighter complained that he has been unable to receive combat veteran status or promised payments from the Russian authorities for his service. [49] Mobilization News released another video on March 27 wherein relatives of killed and wounded Storm-Z fighters complain to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Russian authorities have not issued the Storm-Z fighters combat status or granted payments in the event of their death or injury in Ukraine. [50] The relatives of the Storm-Z fighters blamed the Russian MoD and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu for the poor treatment and lack of benefits for Storm-Z fighters. The Russian MoD relies heavily on Storm-Z recruits from penal colonies to carry out costly infantry-led frontal assaults against Ukrainian positions and is very unlikely to address complaints concerning their poor treatment. The Russian MoD claimed on March 27 that it is issuing electronic combat veteran certificates and streamlining and digitizing the process for veterans to obtain payments and social benefits — but these privileges evidently do not apply evenly to all personnel who have signed contracts with the Russian MoD. [51]

Russian news outlet Vedemosti reported that US-sanctioned Russian company Baikal Electronics is struggling to domestically package semiconductor chips to produce processors and that over half of its domestically produced processors are defective. [52] Vedemosti reported that Baikal Electronics began to experiment with domestically packaging chips in Russia at the end of 2021 and that outdated equipment and a lack of experienced employees caused the large amount of processor defects.

Russian Technological Adaptations (Russian objective: Introduce technological innovations to optimize systems for use in Ukraine)

Russian drone developer Albatross LLC told Kremlin newswire TASS that Russian forces used the Albatross M5 long-range reconnaissance drones to guide aviation and artillery strikes while repelling recent pro-Ukrainian Russian raids into Belgorod Oblast. [53] Albatross LLC noted that the modernized Albatross M5 drone has a maximum range of 60-80 kilometers.

Russian state news outlet RIA Novosti reported that Russian T-72B3, T-72B3M, T-80BVM, and T-90M tanks operating in Ukraine use Reflex-M guided weapon systems with the Invar-M/M1 anti-tank guided missiles to strike Ukrainian and Western-made vehicles. [54]

Ukrainian Defense Industrial Efforts (Ukrainian objective: Develop its defense industrial base to become more self-sufficient in cooperation with US, European, and international partners)

ISW is not publishing coverage of Ukrainian defense industrial efforts today.

Activities in Russian-occupied areas (Russian objective: Consolidate administrative control of annexed areas; forcibly integrate Ukrainian citizens into Russian sociocultural, economic, military, and governance systems)

ISW is not publishing coverage of activities in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine today.

Russian officials are weaponizing international responses to the Crocus City Hall attack to accuse the West of espousing Russophobic policies and to baselessly blame Ukraine of involvement in the attack. Russian Ambassador to Austria Dmitry Lyubinsky claimed on March 27 that while the Austrian government reacted to the Crocus City Hall attack, it did not use the words “terrorist attack” or condemn the attack. [55] Lyubinsky accused Austria of having “taken a very special position in its hypocrisy” and a “daze of permissiveness” towards Ukraine and reiterated the Kremlin narrative baselessly connecting Ukraine to the attack. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova reported that Russia has received 24-hour non-stop words of support from around the globe following the attack, but immediately pivoted to accuse Ukraine of involvement in the attack and blame NATO members of monopolizing the global fight against terror. [56]

Significant activity in Belarus (Russian efforts to increase its military presence in Belarus and further integrate Belarus into Russian-favorable frameworks and Wagner Group activity in Belarus)

Nothing significant to report.

Note: ISW does not receive any classified material from any source, uses only publicly available information, and draws extensively on Russian, Ukrainian, and Western reporting and social media as well as commercially available satellite imagery and other geospatial data as the basis for these reports.
