Austria travel blog, swarovski crystal worlds austria: get ready to be dazzled, marvel at the wonder of the world-famous crystals.

The Swarovski Crystal Worlds or Kristallwelten near Innsbruck in Austria is unlike any other tourist attraction in the world. Imagine an underground tour or magical chambers filled with differently themed crystal artwork underneath a fairytale landscape in an Alpine setting. That is what you can expect on a visit to the Crystal Worlds in Wattens.

Swarovski Giant

To find the Swarovski Crystal Worlds (Kristallwelten) at our front door was one of the biggest surprises when we arrived in Innsbruck . I never knew Swarovski crystals came from Austria, never mind the village of Wattens in Tyrol . My guess was always Eastern Europe.

Given the fact that  Daniel Swarovski , the glass cutter who founded the company in 1895, was born in what is now the Czech Republic, I suppose I wasn’t entirely wrong.

We´ve been to the Swarovski Crystal Worlds countless times at different times of the year, and they always manage to surprise us with something new. That is why we will keep on going back.

Swarovski Crystal Worlds Basics

Now available – online tickets.

It´s now possible to conveniently buy your tickets online to avoid queueing on the day of your visit and spend more time marvelling at what´s inside the Swarovski Crystal Worlds.

Chambers of Wonder

To me, the Swarovski Kristallwelten is about marvelling at what a bunch of highly creative people did with millions of dashing crystals.

The main attraction is the chambers of wonder in the belly of the Giant , a creation of André Heller. The Giant supposedly watches over his treasures – which are hidden beneath the earth – after collecting them on a world journey.

Each chamber of wonder was created by a renowned artist, designer, or architect to show off the brilliance of Swarovski crystals. The 18th chamber of wonder, the light installation Umbra by James Turrell, was opened in April 2022.

In 2021, a chamber of wonder called the Art of Performance , featuring iconic outfits worn by famous actors and musicians on screen and the stage, are exhibited against a dazzling backdrop of Swarovski crystals.

swarovski innsbruck visit

Original outfits worn by Elton John and Cher are exhibited alongside recreations of Marlene Dietrich’s 1932 Blonde Venus outfit, which marks the first time Swarovski appeared on the big screen.

You´ll also get to see Marilyn Monroe’s “Birthday Dress” that wowed not only John F. Kennedy but the world at the president’s legendary birthday dinner. More impressive is Katy Perry’s Moschino Chandelier gown that she wore to the 2019 Met Ball. Other notable items on display include Björk’s Foraeva dress and pieces by Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

Snow in Swarovski Crystal Worlds

And if you want to experience snow all year round, all you have to do is stand around the Silent Light crystal tree created by the Dutch designer Tord Boontje. It is cloaked in ice-cold snow by TechnoAlpin in a chamber of wonder where the temperature can fall to as low as -10° C.

Kristallwelten Garden Highlights

After leaving the belly of the giant, there is a vast park area to explore. My highlight is the Crystal Cloud floating above a black mirror pool. The “clouds” are covered in 800,000 hand-mounted Swarovski Crystals.

When he was younger, M loved the four-story play tower for kids. He also likes running around in the labyrinth. The latter, in the shape of a hand, is another design by André Heller.

swarovski innsbruck visit

Next to the labyrinth, a black-and-white carousel by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon stands in contrasts with the surrounding greenery of the garden. The monochrome design incorporates 15 million Swarovski crystals across 12 ceiling panels and 16 wall panels. There is no additional cost to ride the carousel.

Recently, the excavations of Roman walls which were discovered while doing improvements in 2014 have also been opened to the public. They offer an important window on the history of the area. Apart from the walls, a cache of 702 Roman silver coins was found in what is thought to have been a small village along a main Roman thoroughfare.

Seasonal Surprises

To keep things interesting, in addition to the permanent exhibitions, a variety of events for young and old are held at the Kristallwelten throughout the year.

For example, the Circus Theater Roncalli have been providing summer entertainment for a number of years. They turn the gardens into a circus ring with 16 shows daily that are included in the regular entrance fee.

From November to February, the park surrounding the giant is transformed into a winter wonderland. Luminous animal figures by Tord Boontje and a 13-metre-high Christmas tree are just some of the elements that brighten up cold days.

Crystal Worlds Shop

I guess the highlight for shopaholics would be the Swarovski Crystal Worlds shop, which is home to one of the world’s largest collections of Swarovski products. It is a unique opportunity to buy items that are exclusively available in Wattens and Austria.

And when you´re done shopping, there is a Crystal Bar in the store where you can buy snacks or drinks from 10:00 to 16:00 daily.

Tips for Visiting Swarovski Crystal Worlds

  • You can visit the Swarovski Kristallwelten Store and Daniels Kristallwelten Café and Restaurant without having to buy a ticket for the Swarovski Crystal Worlds.
  • Check out the events programme at Swarovski Crystal Worlds before you visit to ensure you don´t miss out on something special like a circus performance or a light show.
  • Swarovski Crystal Worlds and the shuttle bus from Innsbruck are included in the Innsbruck Card .
  • If you don’t have enough time to visit the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens (or maybe your partner doesn’t understand the fuss about crystals ?) you can also pop into the Swarovski Kristallwelten Store Innsbruck. It’s near the Golden Roof in Herzog-Friedrich-Straße in the Innsbruck old town (very close to the McDonald’s).
  • Locals or tourists who plan to visit Swarovski Crystal Worlds regularly can buy an annual card @ €60 for adults and €25 for children from 6 to 17 years.
  • The Freizeitticket Tirol , which is available to residents of Tyrol, includes 3 free entrances to Swarovski Kristallwelten per year.
  • If you´re hungry for something more than a snack at the Crystal Bar, Daniels Kristallwelten is the onsite restaurant and café in the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. They serve international and Tyrolean dishes with a focus on seasonal cuisine. The in-house patisserie also bakes delicious cakes, macarons, muffins or cupcakes.

Getting to Swarovski Crystal Worlds

  • Own transport – The address to enter in your GPS/navigation app is Kristallweltenstraße 1, 6112 Wattens, Austria. There is plenty of free parking for cars and buses outside Swarovski Crystal Worlds.
  • Shuttle Bus – The Swarovski Crystal Worlds shuttle bus travels between Innsbruck and Swarovski Kristallwelten four times daily. It departs at the Innsbruck main station (Hauptbahnhof) and makes one more stop at the Innsbruck Congress/Hofburg before travelling straight to Swarovski Crystal Worlds. Visiting Swarovski Crystal World – Innsbruck, Austria

The Crystal Dome at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Blingtastic Swarovski crystals, a light exhibition, intriguing modern art and stunning gardens,  Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds) is one of the top places to visit near Innsbruck!

Innsbruck was the final stop on my whirlwind trip around Austria. After visiting Graz and Salzburg , I wondered what this city shrouded by snow-capped mountains would have to offer. I knew it as a winter destination, with several ski resorts just a short journey from the city centre, but what about in the warmer months?

After a day of sightseeing, checking out the colourful houses lining the River Inn, walking along Maria Theresien Street and catching a cable car up Nordkette, I had four hours free. You guys told me to visit Swarovski Crystal Worlds (Swarovski Kristallwelten) and I listened!

Exploring Innsbruck in Austria

I’ll admit I had a few preconceptions before my visit. I’ve never been a huge Swarovski fan. I like jewellery, but nothing hugely blingy. I worried this Swarovski museum might be a tourist attraction with the principal aim to push gift shop purchases. Surprisingly, it wasn’t, and actually, it was really rather magical!

Visiting Swarovski Kristallwelten in Austria

I’ll add one thing here. A lot of visitors rushed through in tours, didn’t read any of the information on the screens, and probably just saw a pretty light or exhibit, snapped a photo, and moved on. I decided to take my time. I also took a tripod.

Photography is really important to me, and as I was travelling solo I really wanted to capture some great shots of me exploring the magic. It turned out to be a lifesaver… as most of the exhibition is in the dark, slow shutter speed is required, and hand held shots would have suffered by losing their crispness.

There are 16 rooms in Swarovski’s Chambers of Wonder , each designed by great artists from around the world. Having visited several modern art museums, I’d compare this experience as being closer to that rather than a touristy theme park (which was what I worried it could be!)

Without giving too much away, here are a few highlights from my morning at Swarovski Crystal Worlds… and scroll down to find out useful info including ticket prices and the shuttle bus.

The Swarovski Giant

The entrance to Swarovski Kristallwelten features an impressive giant! He’s pretty imposing, with a waterfall cascading from his mouth. It was designed by multimedia artist André Heller to celebrate Swarovski’s hundredth anniversary in 1995. You can see the Swarovski factory close by too.

The Crystal Dome

The crystal dome made up of 595 mirrors was one of my favourite rooms. It was pure magic. Everything reflected, the colours kept changing, and when I had it all to myself I felt like I’d been enclosed in my very own crystal! Needless to say, a lot of photos followed.

The Crystal Dome at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Another of my favourites, this room starts with a waterfall and then opens out into a magical scene of lights, poles (to symbolise trees) and mirrors. The reflections are mesmerising, and while it’s a small space, the fantastical forest feels vast. It’s a room made for photography too!

Eden at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Reflections

This room was quite eerie, with enchanting music and constantly changing colours and lights.A dorning each of the 48 blocks made from crystal were key moments from history. It wiggled around corners and certainly left an impression!

Reflections at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Crystal Forest

The final room, Crystal Forest contains a large illuminated ball made of 10,000 crystals, and strands of light stretching the length of the room. I read that it represented a sea monster, and all the elements… but as with all modern art, everyone comes to their own conclusions… so hello giant tassel!

Crystal Forest at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Austria

Cinderella’s Slipper

The final room contained some famous items from Swarovski’s history, with my favourite being Cinderella’s slipper (from the 2015 film). Cut from a crystal, it glinted and shone in the light! I wonder if it’d fit my foot? Size 5?

Crystal Clouds

swarovski innsbruck visit

I made sure I had time to check out the outside areas too. There are beautiful gardens with a maze, kids play area and even a waterfall. My favourite outdoor feature were the crystal clouds, which stood tall over a pool of water. Cue magical reflections as the crystals caught the sunlight!

One of the most incredible things about Swarovski Kristallwelten is its location in between snow-capped mountains in the town of Wattens near Innsbruck. It really does provide a stunning backdrop.

Ahhh thank you so much for commenting. I’m really glad you liked it. I really enjoyed visiting 🙂

we visited a couple of years ago but unfortunately we could not get into the gift shop without paying to visit. As we were not interested in the ‘World’ €38 seemed rather expensive to enter a probably expensive shop.

The cafe was pleasant and reasonably priced however.

Thanks for your comment John. I can see it would be disappointing if you just went for the gift shop! But you’d miss a lot by not seeing the whole art display in the World.

Glad to know we can bring a tripod! Planning on visiting tomorrow!

Oh yay – have a great time!

Are the crystals cheaper, same or more expensive than in the United States?

Hi Colleen, I’m not too sure right now, so you’ll need to contact them directly to check!

Not even sure how I ended up on your page but wow am I glad I did!! Holy cow is that place fantastic!!! I wish I could go there but alas I will just have to live it through your photos. I will be further researching to see if I can find some videos as well. If anyone thinks Disney is magical….they haven’t seen this place LOL.

Thanks Kellie – amazing place isn’t it! I thought it was magical too!

Was just looking for info on the Swarovski palace and loved reading your article! Was very helpful for my daughter and I to get a sense of things as we plan our week around Garmisch this summer.

That’s lovely to hear! Have a great time.

History of Swarovski Crystal Worlds

Swarovski Crystal Worlds

Crystal Worlds came to life because the company's CEO, Helmut Swarovski, wanted to mark the centenary of the Swarovski brand in an innovative way. He envisioned a place where art, culture, and crystal would come together to captivate visitors. The museum's location was chosen to be close to the company's headquarters and production facilities in Wattens, Tyrol, Austria. In 2020, Swarovski celebrated its 125th anniversary, and as part of the celebration, the Crystal Worlds underwent a significant renovation and expansion, adding new exhibits. The museum is a testament to the innovation of the Swarovski brand, and is one of the most visited locations in Austria today.

Who Built Swarovski Crystal Worlds?

The museum was designed by multimedia artist André Heller, on request of the company Swarovski for their anniversary celebrations.  The Playtower was designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Numerous artists collaborated to put up their work in the exhibits you see in the museum today.

Swarovski Crystal Worlds Architecture

Swarovski Crystal Worlds

The architecture of the Swarovski Crystal Worlds is a unique and captivating blend of art, creativity, and modern design, by multimedia artist André Heller. The museum's interior consists of several themed chambers, each designed by different artists, designers, and architects. A combination of materials have been used, including glass, steel, concrete, and natural stones. The Crystal Worlds' main building is partially buried into the hillside, blending harmoniously with its surroundings for an eco-friendly design. The entrance to the museum is marked by a giant head, made of over 0.8M hand-mounted crystals, becoming an iconic symbol of the Crystal Worlds internationally. The kid-friendly playtower was designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, which stands as a colourful play area, in contrast to the elegant crystal exhibits of the museum.

What’s Inside Swarovski Crystal Worlds?

  • Chamber of Wonders: Based on the historical chamber of wonders in the castle of Ambras, which was a 16th-century attempt to assemble a universal collection of all knowledge, there are 18 Chambers of Wonder including Silent Light, Blue Hall, and Timeless to name a few.
  • Crystal Cloud: At the entrance to the museum lies the Crystal Cloud, a giant head covered in over 800,000 hand-mounted crystals. The head has become synonymous with the innovation of Crystal World.
  • The Garden: The Museum also consists of a 7.5-hectare garden, where contemporary art meets ancient history. In the garden is a hand-shaped maze that you can enter and try to find your way out of.
  • Mirror Pool: The Mirror Pool is a large, shallow pool of water, perfectly reflecting its surroundings of landscaped gardens and art installations, creating a stunning mirror effect.
  • Roman Excavations: During the intensive 2014 renovation of Crystal Worlds, 702 Roman coins and wall remains dating back to Roman times were excavated, which are now available for public viewing.
  • Hexalite: Experience a unique outdoor installation by Emirati artist Zeinab Al Hashemi which is a combination of 33 hexagonal structures of mirrored steel, adorned with 1,145 Swarovski crystals and mirrored prisms.
  • Observation Deck: Walk through an alpine garden to an elevated observation deck, where you can look through Swarovski’s OPTIK telescope and study and enjoy the surrounding landscapes.

André Heller: The creative mastermind behind the Crystal Worlds

A timeless installation made of hills, nature and a waterfall sits protectively above the Chambers of Wonder in Wattens. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company, media artist André Heller was commissioned to create a world of crystal. It was Heller’s goal to create something timeless, and so the idea of the green giant was born. Today, the 17 m (55 feet) tall giant head is the hallmark of the Crystal Worlds. He is a source of inspiration, a kaleidoscope that blends water and nature together. Here, miracles really do happen in the (giant’s) head.

daniel rueda media_content.tooltip.skipped

The Story of the Giant’s Origins

André Heller dreamed up the following story for the structure: The giant once embarked on a journey to explore wonders and art from all around the world. After collecting many new impressions, he settled in Wattens with all his wisdom and has been guarding the treasures in the Chambers of Wonder ever since.

These days, there are 17 chambers filled with crystal artwork inside the giant, with artists from all over the world presenting their work. Each chamber is its own little masterpiece focused on interior design, installations or holograms. The doors of the chambers open portals to a multitude of new worlds and experiences.

Heroes of Peace - A Chamber of Wonders by André Heller

Peace symbols in the form of holograms appear in three crystals of about 20 centimeters in diameter. Holograms of Albert Einstein or Mahatma Gandhi speak directly to the visitors and offer messages of peace. The impressive installation leaves visitors with one question: What can you do yourself to promote world peace?

Not only did André Heller come up with the entire concept of the Crystal Worlds, he also designed a chamber of his own. „Heroes of Peace“ pays tribute to all the world’s ambassadors of peace. Aside from Nelson Mandela and Bertha von Suttner, one can also see John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono in a black and white projection.

„The giant and its creator, André Heller, distinguish themselves with a seemingly endless ability to shape-shift, a universal language and the courage to embrace permanent change - all very rare, and therefore very valuable traits.“

Do miracles exist? A walk through the Chambers of Wonder erases any doubt. Artists from all over the world contributed their visions and ideas in crystalline form. These 17 wonders await your discovery inside the head of a peaceful giant in Wattens.

Heller’s Inspiration: The Chamber of Wonders at Ambras Castle

As early as the 16th century, a chamber of wonders (also called chamber of arts) was created at Ambras castle close to Innsbruck and the Crystal Worlds in Wattens. At the time, the collection consisted of wonders of nature, as well as valuable works of art and other precious items from all over the world. Regents everywhere tried to amass treasures of nature, art and science in their chambers of wonder to show off their power and influence. Ambras Castle houses a collection of unique artefacts started by Archduke Ferdinand II. It is the only chamber of art from the Renaissance period that is still at the same location in which it originated.

Crystalline Sound by Swarovski

Scintillating, surprising and unusual.

What does crystal sound like? Roland Gerger, the famous Austrian musician, composer and DJ with the name Emil Berliner, decided to explore this question. His idea was to turn the optical effects of crystal into sound. He sees crystal as a beautiful but very quiet material. Which is why he chose to find a way to experience it through sound. To find the right tone, the artist used saws, files and sandpaper on the crystals. He let crystals trickle into different receptacles. The result? A unique soundscape featuring elements of bass, violins, chimes and even the sound of ocean waves. Combined with natural sounds such as birdsong or raindrops, the crystalline sound becomes a Gesamtkunstwerk. Contrary to the Chambers of Wonder inside the Giant, the sound cloud envelops visitors even in the farthest corners of the Crystal Worlds complex, such as the carousel.

Experiencing Crystal: A magical ride on the Carousel

Andy Warhol at the Swarovski Crystal Worlds Swarovski Kristallwelten media_content.tooltip.skipped

With the scintillating sounds of crystal in our ears we move on to the next curiosity: the carousel. In the heart of the Tirolean mountains, the Spanish artist Jaime Hayon has created a nostalgic ride on a masterpiece of his own. 15 Million Swarovski crystals bring the monochrome design of the intriguing creation to life. Its black and white features stand in stark contrast with the lush spring and summer landscape surrounding the carousel. In winter, however, among the snow-covered mountains, it looks like a crystal embedded in the white winter landscape. The abstract figurines are all unique and made of a mix of magic, human and animal elements that tickles the imagination. Decide for yourself what the surreal, humorous designs represent to you. The carousel shows us that there are no limits to the imagination. As soon as the ride starts, you leave every-day worries behind. With the mighty mountain landscape of Tirol as backdrop and sparkling crystals in the periphery of your vision, you’ll find yourself on a nostalgic journey filled with beauty and magic.

„The carousel awakens a sense of freedom and joy – it is art in motion and a place where imagination reigns free. I am happy for all the people who can embark on this fairy-tale journey. Swarovski wants to get people to dream and it does not shy away from challenges to make that vision come true."

Did you know that…

the design of the carousel was inspired by theater, circus, manga and African folk tales?

the term carousel comes from the Italian „carosello“ and means „Ringelspiel“?

on the 12,5 meter (41 feet) wide and 6,5 meter (21 feet) high carousel at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, 28 people can ride at the same time?

the carousel by Jaime Hayon was awarded the 2020 Wallpaper Design Award in the category „Best Ride”?

the shoes of the figures are similar to traditional Japanese wood sandals?

About 12 miles east of Innsbruck, you'll find the dazzling Swarovski Crystal Worlds (Swarovski Kristallwelten). The Walt Disney World of gems, this nearly 19-acre park features a variety of art installations that incorporate the famous crystals. Among the highlights are the "Crystal Cloud," which features 800,000 floating crystals that are reflected in the "Mirror Pool." Families will also find a play area for kids with a play tower, a garden maze, a carousel and a playground.

Recent visitors described the attraction as "mesmerizing" and "impressive." Others were particularly in awe of the exhibits housed within the "Giant," which showcases art installations by a variety of artists, including Yayoi Kusama and Andy Warhol, among others.

To get to Swarovski Crystal Worlds, you can take a taxi, but it's cheaper to hop on the shuttle bus . If you have an Innsbruck Card, your ride is covered. If you don't have the card, expect to pay 9.50 euros (or about $10.60) for a round-trip fare. The attraction is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost 19 euros (around $21) for adults and 7.50 euros (about $8.50) for youths ages 6 to 14; children 5 and younger enter for free. #1 Maria-Theresien-Strasse (Maria Theresa Street)

One of Innsbruck's most famous streets, Maria Theresien Street is a glorious remnant of the city's baroque past, dating back 700 years. Now a pedestrian promenade, the street, which is located outside Old Town, is lined with palaces once owned by the city's aristocracy, as well as cafes, shops and landmarks like St. Anne's Column and the Triumphal Arch .

Recent visitors raved about the amazing views of the mountains seen from the street and recommended seeing the Christmas market set up on the street during the holidays. However, a few reviewers warned that the prices at the shops, cafes and restaurants that line the street are too high. For unobstructed photos, plan a morning visit.
