Keep your kids entertained for hours on car rides with this free printable Road Trip Bingo travel game! Plus more of our favorite road trip essentials!

Velcro Road Trip Bingo Travel Game for Kids

Growing up our family went on a road trip every summer to the beach. This was long before tablets and even portable DVD players, so we had to think of other ways to keep ourselves entertained!

One of our favorite travel games was a card game where you divvied up a deck of picture cards. The first person to spot all of the things on each of their cards won. Some of the items were easy to find, some where practically impossible (a lighthouse…really?!) but we always had a blast playing!

I created this printable Road Trip Bingo travel game based on our favorite childhood road trip card game.

Instructions:

Print the bingo cards (available below) and cut out along the outlines. Feel free to color in the pictures on the cards!

To get access to my free printable library, enter your email address in the form below:

Featured Image

Glue the printable bingo cards to card stock or sturdy paper.

Attach velcro stickers to the squares on cards next to each item name as well as to the back of foam shapes. We used different colored silly face foam pieces for each player, corresponding to the color of card stock we used for each bingo card.

Keep your kids entertained for hours on car rides with this free printable Road Trip Bingo travel game! Plus more of our favorite road trip essentials!

Note:  If you don’t have velcro stickers handy, you can also use clothespins, paperclips, or even regular stickers.

How to play:

Pass out bingo cards to all the players.

Every time you see something on your card, cover that space with a marker. The first player to cover all five spaces on their bingo card wins!

Our favorite road trip essentials

Books — We all love to read, so occasionally during the trip we’ll have quiet time. It’s so easy to get caught up in a good book that you don’t even notice time passing!

Road trip playlist — We always create a special playlist before we go on any trip, filled with our family’s favorite songs. There is definitely some sing-a-long time on every excursion!

No-mess snacks — Nothing diffuses cranky kiddos like a snack! Tree Top Applesauce Pouches are perfect for road trips because the no-spill squeeze pouch prevents messes .

Keep your kids entertained for hours on car rides with this free printable Road Trip Bingo travel game! Plus more of our favorite road trip essentials!

The one thing I don’t enjoy about road trips is how tricky it can be to find wholesome food on the road. That’s why we pack ahead to make sure we always have real food instead of chips or candy.

Tree Top Applesauce is made with 100% USA apples and contains NO high fructose corn syrup and NO artificial ingredients and are easy to slip into a travel bag or purse. They’re the perfect packable snack when you’re on the go!

Tree Top Applesauce Pouches come in a variety of kid-approved flavors and in both 4-count and 12-count packages. To find out where to buy in your area, visit TreeTop.com .

There are so many moving parts to this it’s a bit confusing. I’ve looked through the page five times to find the LINK to download the FREE Bingo Boards. Sad.

Yes, I can’t display a full sized PDF in the blog post itself, so there is a link to download/print the full cards. What’s sad to me is that anyone would complain about free content that I spent hours creating.

July 19, 2021 at 2:38 pm

Hi! The link to the pdf doesn’t seem to be working. These are so cute, I hope to use them for my kiddos on our upcoming trip! Thanks!

Oh no! I just went back and fixed the link, but here it is just in case: https://thesoccermomblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Road-Trip-Bingo-Cards.pdf Thank you for letting me know!

Keep Your Kids From Asking “Are We There Yet?” With a Simple Fun Car Ride Game

Mom confession: We haven’t taken our kids on a vacation in a long time. Mostly because neither #DoneWithFun Daddy nor I find traveling with kids to be much of a vacation.

It’s more of a production — packing, entertaining, eating out, sleeping in one hotel room, deviating from all our routines… None of the things that my kids particularly excel at.

But they are getting older and I’m getting stir-crazy so we’re hopping in the car over the long 4th of July weekend for a little family round trip to St. Louis. The drive is under 5 hours — should be easy-peasy, right?

Road Trip Bingo Game Board car trip activities for kids road signs landmarks restaurants etc to spot from the car

Well. Maybe. Let’s just say that the last time we drove to Lake Geneva, I was asked approximately eleventy-seven billion times if we were there yet — all within the first 30 minutes. Patience is a virtue, and one my kids don’t have yet.

Road Trip Bingo Game Board car trip activities for kids road signs landmarks restaurants etc to spot from the car

Enter Road Trip Bingo: An easy way to entertain your kids on a long or short car ride — they look out the window, searching for items to cross off their cards. You put your head back, close your eyes, and relax for a minute. Just download my cute free printable below and cross your fingers that it buys you some time in between the “are we there yet?”s.

Happy road trippin’!

What You’ll Need

  • Bingo cards for all players (free printable includes 8 unique cards)
  • Colored dot stickers or other small stickers for marking off card
  • Bingo daubers or something to write with (optional)
  • Assorted small prizes or candy

How to Play

Print out cards and distribute them to all passengers in the car. (Sorry, the driver is exempt from this game for safety!)

If you have small kids and you don’t trust them with markers or pens in the car, distribute colored sticky dots or small stickers that can be used to mark off the items they spot.

If you have older kids, Bingo daubers or markers are an easy way to cross off what they see.

All players look out the window and cross off the items they see! Call them out when you spot them — if other players spot them too, they can mark them off their card as well. First one to spot a full row wins Bingo!

Keep playing over and over again until you reach your destination. 😉

Tips for Success

  • Print out multiple set of Bingo cards. Since you’ll either be writing on the cards or sticking stickers over the items you see, you won’t be able to reuse them.
  • Don’t discard your card after the first Bingo. Keep going for multiple rows, or work toward filling the whole card for an extra prize!
  • Have a selection of small prizes at the ready: toys, games or coloring books from the Target Dollar Spot or dollar store; new-to-you (i.e., used) books; and of course, candy.

Just print and play with these Free Road Trip Bingo Printables! Find things all along your journey! 10 copies, master list and rules included.

Everyone loves Bingo and with these Free Road Trip Bingo Printables you will be set to enjoy plenty of games with friends and family!

Pages 1-10 are all different boards so up to 10 people can play.

Page 11 and 12 have all of the pictures on them with words to explain what each picture is just in case it isn’t clear. They are meant to print out and be taken along in case they are needed.

Most are very clear but ones like a luggage rack with something on it may not be. Road kill is another that isn’t really clear. I purposely made that one unclear, lol.

When we played this game way back when, I had typed up rules for several of the items. I will add them for you below under “Items on the List”. Use them if you like them and if you don’t, feel free to do it your way of course.

If you are in a different part of the country or a different country totally, some of these may not work this way at all. These worked for us and lest our competitive natures got the best of us, we had them written out.

When we played this as a family many years ago, it was handwritten. I didn’t have the internet tools I do now. We had a lot of fun with it and passed many hours in the car with this game.

I hope you love this game as much as we did!

Follow my  Traveling with Kids Pinterest Board  for dozens of ideas from all around the web! I am constantly finding new things to add so there will be new things all the time!

What you need to Play the Game

–A Caller: Usually someone would pull cards from a hat or bowl and call out what is to be covered on each card. In the case of Road Trip Bingo, the “Caller” is what is outside the vehicle’s windows!

Look all around! Look at other vehicles, IN other vehicles, on other vehicles, along the sides of the road, to the sides, in front of you, behind you, close by and far out!

–At least 2 players.

–1 Bingo card per player. That is the basic version.

If you want to make it challenging, you can also give players more than 1 card.

You can also play with teams if you have young players or are on a bus with more people than cards.

–Some sort of tokens or markers to keep track of what has been called.

If you are going the disposable route with your cards, just checking off the items with a pen, marker or dot marker is fine.

In this case of Road Trip Bingo, I definitely recommend using a pen or marker instead of tokens. Tokens won’t work at all. An even better idea and fun, would be stickers to apply when an item is found.

(The only problem with stickers is that there is no way to verify that it was done correctly at the end of the game if that is needed. Maybe very small stickers to be put in the square so that the picture can still be seen would be an idea.)

You can also laminate your cards to use them over and over and use a dry erase marker.

How to play Bingo

Each player is given a Bingo card and something to mark the spaces when they find the items.

The winner is the first person to get 5 in a row in any direction. If you want to make it more challenging or take longer, make it so they need to get 5 in a row in TWO directions.

You could even play that whoever fills their card first wins. That would make the game last even longer.

Everyone covers the FREE SPACE in the middle of their card.

Review the rules of the game before starting. Decide for example, whether someone can count more than 1 item in the same area.

A construction area may have a construction sign, a dump truck, a crane, and a port-a-pot all very close to each other. May someone cross off all 4 within that close area? Yes? No? It is your game. You decide. Just decide before you begin playing so everyone knows.

And while the construction example may not be allowed, that person may be allowed to get one of those items out of the right hand window and a school bus passing you in the left hand window because that is different. Just make it clear.

The winner is the first to complete the winning line or lines and shouts BINGO!

The items on the Road Trip Bingo List

American flag; a real flag, picture or magnet on a car

Bike; any bicycle but not tricycles, dirt bikes or motorcycles

Boat; any boat, even a canoe in the water, being towed or sitting in a yard

Bucket truck; any truck with a bucket for someone to stand inside of

Camper; the kind that is towed, not a motor home

Car carrier; must be carrying at least one car

Cow; a real cow, not a picture on a billboard, etc.

Crane; the machine, not a bird

Cross; any cross—on a church, a memorial, in a cemetery, etc.

Construction sign; an orange sign warning of road work, etc.

Convertible; decide ahead of time if the top must be down or not; some seasons you just won’t find one with the top down but if it is a nice day, the top should have to be down

Dog; a real dog, no pictures like on a greyhound bus

Full luggage rack; just so there is something on it

Handicap license plate; the symbol on the license plate, not a hanging sign on a mirror

Jeep; any vehicle with “Jeep” on it

Overpass; road that goes over the road

Police car; police CAR, not motorcycle, truck, etc.

Road kill; does not have to be recognizable, just must have been alive at one point; no tire pieces, trash, etc.

School bus; long or short but must be orange

Someone eating/drinking; must be outside your own vehicle

Taxi; must be labeled as “taxi”

Train; any part of a train; engine or cars, moving or still, but track doesn’t count

Tractor; farm tractor, mowing tractor or even lawn tractor; on its own tires or being towed is fine

Water; any water—a puddle, lake, ocean, even a raindrop on the windshield

How to Print some but not all of the pages

There are 12 total pages here and you are welcome to all of them. If you don’t want to print them all, this is what you do:

When you hit the print button, you should get a pop-up page with options. It could also make you ask with a “3 dot” deal or a v to see more or even words that say “more options”.

One option will be whether you wish to print all of the pages or just some of them. You can type all or 1 or 1,3 or 3-5 or whatever pages you would like to print.

Ideas to print and preserve your printables:

Printing, writing on them and disposing is the quickest and easiest use of a printable of course, but there are other options if you choose.

Laminate them:

If you would like to print them once and use them year after year, you can laminate them and use dry erase markers to write on them. Then just file them away until next year. This is a great idea if you use them for a classroom year after year or for multiple classes hour after hour.

White Card Stock and Dry Erase Pockets:

A quicker and easier solution to a disposable printable if you don’t wish to laminate is printing on white card stock and slipping them into dry erase pockets. Children enjoy using colored markers and erasing when they are finished. They can do the same one over and over if they wish and even improve their speed. 5 Free Road Trip Bingo Printables for Kids

We have been taking road trips with our daughter since she was four weeks old. So now that she is sixteen, we kind of have road trips down pat. I know what to pack for a road trip and how to stay safe on a road trip .

Over the years we have taken some epic road trips — through the Canadian Rockies , the midwest , and visiting Civil Rights sights in the South. Throughout those trips we have relied heavily on audiobooks , road trip games, road trip questions , trivia, and a family favorite…road trip bingo.

Traveling with toddlers? Try these road trip activities .

At a very early age we bought the wooden Melissa & Doug travel bingo game . To this day when her friends get in the car, they can’t believe we still have those game boards in the pockets of the back seat. Even the teens still pull them out to start competing (and usually bending and making up rules as they go!)

Yet the game cards that came in that set always drove us a bit crazy. There were so many obvious options that were missing. I often joked that we should just come up with our own categories and options. Well, I finally did.

Road Trip Bingo Printables

road trip bingo printables

I have created five new road trip bingo printables: vehicles, car brands, restaurants, gas stations, and signs. Each sheet can be printed out and used however you like. For example, you can give each child a clip board with the various road trip bingo printables with a pen attached using string or a rubber band.

However, if you do own the Melissa and Doug game boards, these printables have also been sized to cut down to fit perfectly to show behind the gameboards fun flip doors!

This summer I am planning a massive two week road trip through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois. We are going to have a lot of time to kill in the car. I’m already lining up our audiobooks and can’t wait to give these new road trip printables a whirl.

How to Use:

  • Print on standard 8.5×11″ paper. We recommend a card stock or thicker weight paper, especially if you are using them with the Melissa and Doug game boards.
  • If you are using the game boards, cut along the dotted lines so that these will fit into your game board.
  • Otherwise, snap onto a clipboard (one clipboard for each child) and attach a pencil or marker using a string, rubber band, or carabiner.

Tip: To save money on ink, sign up for HP’s Instant Ink Program !

How to Play:

There are many ways to play:

  • Competitive: each player uses the same game board. Whoever sees the object first calls it out and marks it off on their board. The first player to get four across, down, or on a diagonal wins.
  • Individual: each player uses whichever game board that they would prefer. When they see an object on the game sheet, they mark it off their board. They “win” when they get a BINGO (across, down or diagonal), or when they have checked off the entire game board.
  • Full board: everyone tries to complete the entire game board. Whomever finds an object first calls it out and can mark it off their board (but only they can check it off for that one object, everyone else has to find their own.)

Games to play in the car.

  • Road Trip Bingo – Print out cards of things you’ll see along the way.  Sign up for Love My Big Happy Family’s Newsletter and you will receive a free printable of the Road Trip Bingo game  pictured below.  It has four game sheets with a different arrangement of pictures each.  Print out several copies of each sheet and attach each set to a clip board.  Give each child a marker to mark of the itemss on their game sheet as they find them.  You could also print the game sheets out on card stock, laminate them and use dry erase markers.   GET YOUR FREE PRINTABLE HERE!     (You will receive your printable in a second email after you confirm your email address).
  • Count the Slug Bugs – We played a variation of Slug Bug when our kids were younger (since we didn’t want anyone getting hit ).  We counted all the slug bugs we saw and tallied in a notebook how many we saw of each color.  Everyone made a prediction of what color they thought there would be the most of.  Of course there were the usual blue, red and green, but on a long trip you’ll find some unique ones as well, like hot pink or camouflage!  We would call out, “Slug Bug Yellow!” etc when we saw one.  The winner could be the one who makes the correct prediction as to which color will be the most common or the winner could be the one to find the most slug bugs.
  • State Plates –  Make a list of license plates you see and try to find as many different states as you can.  Use a notebook and make a list of each state you see or you could make a list of all of the states and check them off as you find them.  Another fun variation would be to tally how many license plates you come across from each state,
  • Alphabet Hunt –  Look for the letters of the alphabet on billboards and road signs, start with A and work through the alphabet, some will be found easily and quickly, other letters will take a while to find.
  • Notebook Games –  Of course the old standbys like Tic-Tac-Toe, Hang Man, Connect the Dots to Make Boxes are great ways to pass the time as well.  Allyou will need is notebook and something for each person to write with.

Playing games in the car can make the time go by faster, keep everyone’s mind busy and engages and require them to take notice of their surroundings.  It’s a great way to make your vacation more fun for everyone!

We used to go on a lot of long drives as kids during the holidays. I used to like this one game we played with our grandpa. You start with an animal that begins with an A, and if that person says alligator, the next person has to name an animal that begins with an R because its the last letter in alligator.

Nakeya Divine July 14, 2015

Game On Family

How to Play Road Trip Bingo

And bingo was his name-o.

While for many, driving is a relaxing and invigorating experience, passengers in a vehicle may not share the same excitement. There’s simply not much to do in a car. Yes, you can use electronics to occupy your time such as TVs, tablets, and cellphones, but doesn’t everybody deserve a relief from technology every now and then? Not to mention how electronics coupled with road trips can cause severe motion sickness (eww and eek!). Puke, and a hot, extended drive? No way! Instead, opt for a car game that requires no electronics whatsoever but is still tons of fun regardless. Road trip bingo aka auto bingo or travel bingo is the perfect alternative, so without any further ado, let’s jump right into the road trip bingo game tutorial!

Like any bingo game, you’ll need a 5×5 square grid, totaling 25 squares. You can easily print out one of these grids online, but be sure to obtain one specifically for road trips, as well as one for each member of your party, so long as each player’s grid is different from everyone else’s. A road trip bingo game includes squares that have objects specifically found on road trips, such as highways, trailers, texting passengers, dogs, among other things. Finally, each player will need a tool to write with.

Road trip bingo plays nearly identically to the conventional bingo, aside from the driving themed grid. Yet, if you do not know how to play the traditional bingo, then please refer to the tutorial below.

1. Each player gets a grid with the same objects but different placement.   This makes their grids distinct from each other. Ensure no player has the same grid. The driver does not get a grid. 2. As the driver travels, they will call out relevant objects they spot.   As an example, we will use highway. If the driver spots a highway, they will announce it to the passengers. 3. Passengers will then find the called out object (“highway” tile) on their grid and cross it out by placing an ‘X’, check mark, or other notation on the grid. 4. Steps 2-3 are repeated until one player crosses out five objects in a row, which can be done vertically, horizontally, or diagonally (similar to a game of tic tac toe).   Keep in mind that the tile in the exact center of the board is a blank space, automatically cross that one out. 5. First player to complete step four entirely (five in a row) wins!

Road Trip Bingo Object Ideas

Roadside items such as Trailer, RV, Police Car, Fire Engine, Bridge, Motorcycle, Billboard, Road Cone, Gas Station, Ambulance, Stop Sign, Speed Limit Sign, Barn, House, etc. OR use a themed board where all objects are road signs, colors of cars, or makes of cars. Google ‘Road Trip Bingo Printables’ to check out dozens of free printable bingo cards.  We like the ones at Mom’s Minivan: http://www.momsminivan.com/printables.html .

Games of BINGO are player in singular teams–so only one person per team. However, there can be as many players as you want. Just make sure you aren’t causing too much of a distraction for the designated driver, as this could potentially cause a crash or other car issue that could result in serious troubles for you and your family. Drive safely and as always, have fun!

Alphabet Game

Fill in this printable alphabet list with things you see along the way. Works best if you have to complete it in order from A to Z.

You could also encourage your kids to come up with words for each letter of the alphabet that are associated with road trips. Encourage your kids to come up with words that haven’t been used in the other printable games.

Battleship!

Print two copies of the Battleship page. Give each player a copy of the page, along with a pencil.

There are two grids for each player: one for tracking their ships and one for recording shots against the enemy’s ships.

Each player will place all of their ships on the grid by writing the letters of the ship. The type of ship will cover a different number of squares in the grid (ex: submarine occupies 3 squares — put the letters “SSS” on the grid). Ships cannot overlap and can only be drawn vertically or horizontally (not diagonally).

The players will take turns calling out coordinates (ex. G5). If the coordinates called results in a hit, the player will mark the square with an “X”, or a dot “●” if it’s a miss.

If the whole ship has been marked, the player must say, “You sunk my [ship type]!” The first player to destroy the enemy’s fleet wins!

FREE Printable Road Trip BINGO Pack | This Reading Mama

Just recently, our family went on a trip to Washington, D.C. It was about a 6 hour drive, which can seem like an eternity with 4 small kids. Before we left, I searched online for some time, trying to find a cute AND FREE Road Trip BINGO printable game, but was unable to find exactly what I wanted, so I created one! And today, I’m sharing it with you…for those upcoming road trips as school breaks.

The game is pretty self-explanatory. Just print off a game boards (there are 8 included, plus a blank game board for you own use), watch for certain items on your trip, and mark off your board. The person who finds all of the objects on their game board first wins.

My kids played it such that only the first person to see that particular object got to mark it off their board, so it was competitive, but you don’t have to play that way. It could be a collaborative activity, which is what I prefer any way.

If you have older kids, you may enjoy my FREE Interstate BINGO pack !

Going on a road trip? These games will help you pass the time

From classics like Scrabble and Uno to newer hits that prioritize conversation and connection, these games will appeal to everyone in the car.

No matter where you’re going on a road trip, travel games can be a great way to pass long hours in the car and create lasting memories.

The best travel games should be small and light enough to pack with you. They should appeal to a wide range of ages and interests. And of course, they should provide hours of entertainment.

With that in mind, the classic card game Uno is our top choice for best overall travel game. It’s compact, fun for everyone, and easy to pack and pull out when the mood strikes.

But it’s not the only one. We considered portable games in several categories too. From classic board games to Ping Pong-inspired matches, here are the best travel games to take on your next road trip.

The best travel games by category

We break down the best travel games based on different categories like board games, card games, and more.

The best travel board games

Purple cow magnetic backgammon  .

One of the best travel board games is backgammon, considered the national game in many countries across the Middle East and the Mediterranean. This portable version of the classic board game is magnetized so the pieces don’t slide around. Simply open the case, roll the dice, and play. The board may be smaller, but the strategy remains the same.

Keep in mind:   The magnets on the pieces aren’t the strongest but do a good enough job of staying mostly in place.

Product details: Number of players: 2 | Ages: 5 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 |   Size: 6 x 3 inches

Portable Puck Shot

Sturdy wooden pucks and a Baltic birch wood case make this portable hockey board game ideal for car trips, camping, or spending a cozy evening in a cabin. You don’t have to be a hockey lover to enjoy this fast-paced game either. It involves a simple sling that fires wooden pucks across the board at your opponent’s goal.

Keep in mind:   The Portable Puck Shot game is a bit large and heavy, making it more suitable for a road trip than for carrying onto a plane.

Product details:   Number of players: 2 | Ages: 6 and up | Minutes to play a round: 5 | Size: 17 x 10.25 inches

Scrabble to Go

road trip bingo games

Buy it now on   Amazon

It’s not hard to see why Scrabble is one of the most popular board games around. It appeals to players across generations, stimulates the brain, and can spark fun debates. This miniature version comes with snap-in tiles that make it easy to play on bumpy car rides or pick up later, after a break.

Keep in mind:   The tiles on this mini version are small, which may take some getting used to for some players.

Product details: Number of players: 2 to 4 | Ages: 8 and up | Minutes to play a round: 25 | Size: 10.63 x 2.50 x 10.63 inches

Best travel card games

Song survivor.

road trip bingo games

This travel card game is a great way to kick off singalongs in the car or hotels after a long day of travel. Developed by Black-owned small business Doin’ The Most, the game involves drawing cards with one word, prompting each player to sing a song containing that word. If a player messes up the lyrics or can’t think of a song in time, they’re out. This card game is designed for players (and crooners) 13 and up, with easy and hard modes to help make the game as challenging as you want.

Keep in mind:   Not everyone is into singing outside of the shower, so consider your audience of fellow players before bringing this one along.

Product details: Number of players: 2 and up | Ages: 16 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 | Size: travel size

52 Essential Conversations

road trip bingo games

The premise behind this intriguing travel card game springs from the idea that the art of engaging conversation never goes out of style. It’s a “social-emotional” learning game designed to get players thinking and talking about topics that can help people—including kids—open up, improve social skills, and spark creativity. The cards come in a small tin box, making them easy to keep organized and bring anywhere.

Keep in mind: Although this travel card game is designed for players 5 and up, some questions lean more adult. If you’re playing with a multigenerational group, you can skip the questions better suited to adults or take them out of the deck before you play.

Product details: Number of players: 2 and up | Ages: 5 and up | Minutes to play a round: NA | Size:   3 x 2 x 1 inches

road trip bingo games

This popular family card game is equally fun to play while traveling. You can go head to head with just one other person or as many as 10. The objective is to be the first person to get rid of all your cards. But achieving that goal depends on the luck of the draw. Just don’t forget to shout “Uno!” when you’re down to your last card. We love that this version comes in a sturdy tin for safekeeping.

Keep in mind:   This version of Uno incorporates graphic symbols on the cards so players with colorblindness can play too.

Product details: Number of players: 2 to 10 |   Ages: 7 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 | Size: 3 x 2 x 5 inches

Exploding Kittens

road trip bingo games

Easy to learn and loads of fun, Exploding Kittens is a cheeky card game loosely based on Russian roulette. Players draw cards, but use strategy (plus special “immunity” cards) to avoid drawing an “exploding kitten” card. With its compact size and lack of any additional game pieces, this card game is a hilarious way to pass the time while traveling.

Keep in mind: This card game is available in English, but other languages (German, Spanish, Italian, and French) are in the works.

Product details:   Number of players:   2 to 10 | Ages:   7 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 | Size: ‎4.41 x 6.38 x 1.5 inches

Best travel games for adults

Pepper pong.

road trip bingo games

This portable spin on ping pong and pickleball is one of the best travel games for adults. About the size of a shoebox, the game sets up virtually anywhere in a matter of seconds. Place the foldable net (called a Fence) on a picnic table at the park or any other relatively flat surface, and you’re good to go. The game’s three ball sizes (called Peppers) give you options for how aggressively you want to play. You can also feel good about purchasing this portable travel game—the makers say they donate a set to a recovery center or addiction-focused homeless center with each set they sell.

Keep in mind:   There’s no official age minimum for this game. If you can swing the racket you can play. You’ll need a flat surface to set up.

Product details: Number of players: 2 to 4 | Ages: 3 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 | Size: 12 x 7 x 4 inches

The Hygge Game

road trip bingo games

Buy it now at   Uncommon Goods

Hygge is the Danish word for coziness and the basis for this 300-question portable travel game. The questions are designed to foster meaningful conversations among friends and family members. Play it during long car rides, in a candlelit, hygge-inspired restaurant, or anyplace where you want to spark fun and thoughtful connections.

Keep in mind: Some of the questions go pretty deep and might surprise people who prefer more superficial lines of interrogation.

Product details: Number of players: 2 and up | Ages:   14 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 |   Size:   5.70 x 5.70 x 1.80 inches

Parents Are Human

Like the Hygge Game, Parents Are Human is a card game that fosters understanding and connections. This specific deck (others are designed for friends, romantic partners, and siblings) focuses on immigrant families, making it a great game for family road trips. Each set includes 50 question cards and 20 action cards in English on one side and another language on the other ( Arabic, Chinese, Punjabi, Spanish, and Thai).

Keep in mind:   Some reviewers say you can’t play this card game many times with the same people.

Product details:   Number of players: 2 and up | Ages:   13 and up | Minutes to play a round: NA | Size: ‎3.81 x 2.81 x 1.44 inches

Where Should We Begin

road trip bingo games

This traveling card game stems from relationship therapist and author Esther Perel’s Where Should We Begin podcast and is ideally suited for adults. Cards with topics like “A dream I’ve never shared” and “One of the things that is keeping me up at night” help travel companions learn more about each other in an approachable way.

Keep in mind: Many reviewers prefer not to use the dice and pull randomly from the deck of cards instead.

Product details: Number of players: 2 to 6 players | Ages: 18 and up | Minutes to play a round: NA | Size:   9.4 x 4.9 x 2.6 inches

Best travel games for kids

Nex playground.

This compact game console works as a portable travel game that the whole family can play while on the road. The colorful cube uses motion sensors (with controllers or wearable gear) for family-friendly competition. Just plug Nex Playground into a TV and tap the library of more than 20 games and experiences ranging from dance-offs to sports competitions and activities like jumping in puddles with favorite cartoon characters.

Keep in mind: You’ll need floor space of about 8 feet by 8 feet to play, since the game requires moving around. If you’re in a small hotel room or other tight space, that can be challenging.

Product details:   Number of players: Up to 4 | Ages: 5 and up | Minutes to play a round:   5 | Size: 2.83 x 2.83 x 2.83 inches

Kanoodle Ultimate Champion

road trip bingo games

Popular on TikTok, this puzzle game can easily pack up and go with you on your next road trip. It comes with over 500 puzzles and a timer, challenging family members to use problem solving and spatial reasoning skills to beat the clock in time.

Keep in mind:   This game requires two AAA batteries to operate.

Product details: Number of players:   1 | Ages:   7 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 to 30 | Size: ‎5.75 x 2 inches

Play Monster Take ’N Play Bingo

road trip bingo games

Kids can spend hours playing this traveling bingo game. The animal-based bingo cards are built into a metal case that closes for easy storage and transport. Two players take turns spinning the spinner and placing magnetic markers on the matching animals.

Keep in mind:   The magnet is built into one side of the marker pieces, so they’re not the strongest at staying put on the board. However, this game is hard to beat for an affordable and fun option.

Product details: Number of players:   2 | Ages:   4 and up | Minutes to play a round: 5 | Size:   1 x 6.50 x 6.50 inches

Pass the Pigs

road trip bingo games

Families will get a kick out of this adorable dice game that involves rolling a pair of pig-shaped pieces to score points. The first player to score 100 points wins. It’s also a great game to play anywhere while traveling, since it only requires a flat surface to play, plus the pigs, scoring pads, and pencils fit in a small plastic storage case that easily tucks into a backpack.

Keep in mind: Small parts could pose a choking hazard for younger kids.

Product details: Number of players:   2 | Ages:   7 and up | Minutes to play a round: 15 | Size:   1.63 x 4.25 x 9.25 inches

Our review process

The best portable travel games are compact and light enough to take on a road trip or flight, can be contained in a case, and are still fun after multiple rounds of play.

Size:   Travel games shouldn’t be large and heavy. They should be small and light enough to fit easily into suitcases and carry-ons.

Multiplayer: Games for two or more players are best, since the whole point of travel games is to keep everyone entertained.

Fun-factor: Travel games can help stave off boredom between activities, while you’re in transit, or during travel delays. So make sure you choose games that appeal across ages, interests, and have enough variety for the long haul.

Tips for buying travel games

Size of the game

When it comes to the best travel games, size matters, whether you travel with just a carry-on suitcase or don’t want to bulk out your checked baggage. Look for games that are contained in a case small enough to fit into a backpack. On road trips, you can get away with larger games, especially if you’re driving your own vehicle.

Game ratings and popularity

A game’s ratings and popularity can give you a good idea for whether or not it will work for your needs. A sure-fire tip is to look for reviews by customers with similar travel styles and companions as your own.

Players’ ages

It goes without saying, but you’ll maximize fun by packing travel games that are appropriate for everyone in your group. Consider bringing a couple of games–one for spending time with the kids and another for adults.

Time it takes to play a round

When shopping for the best travel games, keep in mind that some people can take longer to finish a game than others. Consider your travel companions’ attention spans and choose accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Are there travel-sized board games?

Yes, many classic and unique board games come in travel sizes. Some even have travel-friendly modifications, such as magnets to prevent pieces from sliding off the board and carrying cases that keep everything contained.

How do you know if a game is good for traveling?

Some games are better suited to travel than others. Card games with a carrying case and board games that don’t have too many loose parts (or are magnetized) tend to be good options for the road. Consider the size and weight of the travel game’s carrying case too. Make sure there’s enough room among everything else you’re packing for your trip.

What are the best travel games for an airplane?

Since space is limited on an airplane, look for games that don’t take up more room than a typical airplane tray table. You’ll also want travel games that can handle turbulence and that you can quickly and easily pick up, in case you need to get out of your seat for a neighbor.

Road trip games can pass the time on a long trip.

Roadtrips are an enjoyable way to see changing scenery, a chance to stay overnight in retro roadside motels, and an excuse to pull over to see the quirky roadside attractions that you’ll only find in small town America.

But road trips also mean long stretches of flat highway where the oohs and ahhs slow down, the snacks run out, and you need a break from the podcast you’ve been streaming.

Pass the time in the car with a game of 'Would You Rather?'

Enter road trip games. They’ll help you pass the time between stops and hopefully squash any questions like “are we there, yet?”.

From games that can be played among a group of friends or couples to road trip games to entertain kids, these games will help keep you entertained on the road.

Top 7 Road Trip Games to Play

1. table topics.

Table Topics is a deck full of fun conversation starter cards. The game is recommended for ages 12 and up, and the cards can spur conversation between a couple or a group. The deck has 135 cards and questions range from: “Is it more important to be book smart or street smart?” and “If you could have front-row seats to any concert who would you like to see?”

Why You Should Stop Sending Texts From Your iMessage App

Apple ipad pro 2024 release date latest news on when it will launch, paris 2024 olympics morocco miss out on historic qualification zambia qualifies, 2. mad libs.

The scribe in charge of the Mad Libs tablet will be prompted to ask participants for verbs, adjectives, nouns, and so on, which will then be put into a short narrative. The catch: No one knows the context that the words they toss out will be put in, so the story ends up being a goofy one. This is a great game for kids in elementary school who are starting to learn the ins and outs of nouns, adjectives and the like.

3. “Would You Rather?”

You could come up with your own scenarios for a game of “Would You Rather” where you pit two outrageous scenarios against one another. But the “Would You Rather” deck of cards is loaded with pre-set predicaments: “Would you rather own a machine that makes any food you want or prints $50 per week?” The family edition has 200 cards that were made with multi-generation road trips in mind.

4. License Plate Game

A road trip classic, and a fun one to play with kids, the license plate game challenges everyone in the car to collectively spot license plates from all 50 states. Pro tip: Print out a map of the United States to keep track of all the states you’ve collected.

When the karaoke is over, play a round of song trivia.

5. License Plate Word Scramble

When you’ve already done your Wordle for the day, you can engage your fellow passengers with a game of word scramble. Just look at a plate in a nearby lane and extract the letter — then challenge everyone to come up with a word with the letters in the plate. For example, if the license plate has the letters NKE in it, the word could be “Banker.”

6. Song Trivia

Every great road trip has a good playlist. But turn your tunes into a game by seeing who can name the singer, song title, and, for a bonus round, the year the song came out. You can set up a playlist in advance for this game or just scroll through the stations.

7. The Geography Game

If you loved social studies as a kid, this game is for you. One person starts the game by throwing out a geographic location (i.e. city, state, mountain region, river, etc.). Let’s say the starting word is California. The next person then comes with a location that starts with the last letter of the previous name, so, in this case, the letter “A,” which could be Alaska, Appalachians, Atlanta, and so on. You could mix up the themes, too, or narrow the categories, too. Other categories could be types of food, animals, countries, or band names.
