The 3,968-passenger Navigator of the Seas was most recently refurbished in February 2019. The ship now features the longest waterslide at sea, a revamped pool area, new nightlife venues and updated dining options. Prior to that, a major upgrade in 2014 added innovative amenities, such as virtual balconies in Interior staterooms. Aside from this virtual scenery, Interior rooms span 160 square feet, while balcony-equipped Suite category cabins range from 277 square feet to 1,260 square feet and include extras like whirlpool bathtubs.

When it's time to eat, guests can grab grub in the three-level main dining room, the buffet, a number of specialty restaurants and several casual eateries. When it's time to burn off those calories, you'll find a myriad of amenities and activities to keep you busy. The ship offers a spa, three pools and six whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, an ice skating rink and a surf simulator.

Evening entertainment includes Broadway-style shows, casino games and multiple bars and lounges. However, some past passengers warned of extra fees across the ship.

Navigator of the Seas departs from Los Angeles for sailings in Mexico.

Navigator Of The Seas Itineraries

Navigator of the seas review, review of navigator of the seas.

The 2002-built Navigator of the Seas cruise ship is the 4th Voyager-class Royal Caribbean liner, with sisterships Adventure OTS , Explorer OTS , Mariner OTS , Voyager OTS .

The vessel (IMO number 9227508) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311478000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US passenger shipping company, trademarked travel brand and subsidiary owned by Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). RCI was established in 1968 and currently has over 1/5 of the worldwide cruise market. RCI also has RCG's largest fleet by both vessel number and GT tonnage (ship sizes and capacities).

All RCI liners have names ending with "of the Seas".

Navigator Of The Seas cruise ship (Royal Caribbean)

The 3400-passenger ship Navigator OTS, like the sisterships, features some of the industry's most unique facilities - like a Rock-Climbing Wall, Ice-Skating Rink, indoor Promenade street, large sports complex, in-line Skating Track.

As a second-generation (modified) Voyager-class ship, Navigator OTS has a larger Windjammer buffet area with the Asian "Jade" and "The Plaza" bar. The first generation Voyager-class ships metal-walled balconies are here replaced with glass railings. Navigator OTS features more glass exteriors, wine bar, expanded youth amenities, Plaza Bar zone (with dining venues / both complimentary and at a fee), first at sea Latin Jazz Bar, first at sea Ben and Jerry's ice-cream parlor. Later, RCI spread these concepts fleetwide.

Decks and Cabins

Navigator Of The Seas staterooms (1674 total, in 34 grades) include 119 Suites, 671 Balcony, 232 OceanView, 138 Promenade View, 514 Inside (including Virtual Balcony). Most cabins are sized 150-160 ft2 (14-15 m2). Most cabin balconies are sized 50 ft2 (5 m2). The largest is Royal Suite (1090 ft2 / 101 m2 plus 215 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace with Jacuzzi). Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 27.

The boat has 15 decks , of which 14 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Eating options aboard Navigator OTS were expanded during ship's 2014 refurbishment. The line added Sabor - a Mexican restaurant, and Izumi Japanese Cuisine - Asian-fusion eatery. The Italian Portofino was replaced with a new family-style option called Giovanni's Table. Longtime Royal Caribbean's steakhouse Chops Grille features a revamped menu including premium steak options. The 3-level main dining room was consolidated under one name, the Sapphire and redesigned - now decorated in golds and whites, with a grand staircase, dark carpeting, white linens, and a dramatic chandelier. Reservations are recommended for the speciality restaurants. Guests can make reservations online (up to 4 days prior to the cruise) for parties of up to 6, or once onboard at reservation tables outside the Windjammer buffet, by calling guest services or at the restaurants themselves.

Follows the complete list of Navigator of the Seas restaurants and food bars.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

At night, Navigator of the Seas offers traditional-style productions (singing and dancing shows) presented in The Royal Theatre. Bar venues offer various musical performances aimed to please everybody at any time with classical guitar, jazz, and country. Beyond the usual, where this cruise vessel excels is unique, like Studio B ice rink which hosts "Ice Dancing" - worth the effort to get a ticket (free of charge but the venue is tiny, so tickets are limited). The Royal Promenade on some nights comes alive with street entertainment. New to the ship after the refurbishment is the signature R Bar, which replaced the Champagne Bar located on Deck 5, outside the Promenade. This is a very popular gathering spot for pre- and post-dinner exotic cocktails, mixed by using various techniques.

The RCI's enhanced Adventure Ocean youth program is hosted in a redesigned playground space. With trained staff and RCI's award-winning kids programming, the contemporary concept offers activities organized by interests. The teen areas sport updates via the redesigned teen-only laidback hangout, Living Room, as well as a "hidden" entrance and outdoor deck serving up nothing but chill vibes.

Navigator Of The Seas Wiki

Navigator is one of Royal Caribbean's Voyager-class liners, with sisterhips Adventure , Explorer , Mariner , Voyager . Voyager-class Royal Caribbean vessels were all built in Finland by shipbuilder Kvaerner Masa-Yards. This company was later acquired by STX Europe (part of STX Corporation, South Korea).

Navigator Of The Seas cruise ship (Royal Caribbean)

The ship's godmother is Stefanie Maria Graf/Steffi Graf (1969-born German tennis player). The naming ceremony was held on December 6, 2002. Steffi Graf has 107 singles titles and is 3rd in the WTA chart - after Martina Navratilova (167 titles) and Chris Evert (157 titles). RCI Navigator's Maiden Voyage left on December 14th.

Navigator OTS refurbishment 2024 review

The ship's last drydock was in 2024 (February 16-April 6) conducted by Seatrium Marine in Singapore .

The drydocking project was mainly for routine technical maintenance (machinery overhaul, classification works, minor repairs/steel works) as well as general hotel upkeep - updates to some public areas and passenger staterooms (carpeting, new upholstery, walling).

Navigator OTS refurbishment 2019 review

During drydock refurbishment in 2019 (January 5 - February 23), the ship was Royal Amplified at the cost of USD 115 million. The grandiose project resulted in the following changes:

  • On Sports Deck 13, RCI's waterslides "Cyclone" and "Typhoon" (Perfect Storm aqua park) were installed (next to the FlowRider simulator).
  • On Spa Deck 12 (aft), the "Slashaway Bay" kids aqua park was added. This is an interactive water play area (with cannons and geysers), replacing the old Outdoor Youth Area (aka "back deck").

Following the refit, the vessel now has some unique new facilities currently not available on other RCI ships.

  • In addition to "Perfect Storm", a new water coaster (trademarked as "The Blaster") and a new headfirst mat racing slide (trademarked as "Riptide") were also installed. RCI trademarked both names in September 2018.
  • The Blaster aqua coaster has length 244 m (800 ft) - ranking it the longest at sea 2-person raft slide.
  • The Riptide mat racing waterslide features a transparent tube.

Also new for the fleet is "To Dry For" - new blow-dry bar (specializing in quick beauty fixes/hairstyling) and also serving champagnes and wines by the glass. "To Dry For" was trademarked in July 2018.

The list of other new venues and activities includes:

  • Lime and Coconut (2-level bar lounge with live music)
  • Bamboo Room (bar lounge)
  • Johnny Rockets Express (fleet's first)
  • Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade (with "Owner's Box" VIP room)
  • Starbucks Bar (specialty drinks and pastries)
  • new restaurants (El Loco Fresh, Jamie's Italian, Hooked Seafood)
  • The Observatorium (Royal Escape Room)
  • Battle for Planet Z (laser tag course at Studio B)
  • redesigned Mini-Golf Course

7 Things to Know About Royal Caribbean's Hot 'New' Cruise Ship, Navigator of the Seas

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

It's hard for me to believe it's been nearly 17 years since the debut of Navigator of the Seas. I remember the first sailing of the 1,020-foot-long, 15-deck-high Royal Caribbean ship like it was yesterday. After all, it was a big deal.

At 138,279 gross register tons, Navigator was the largest cruise vessel ever built at the time, chock full of such then-unusual features as a rock-climbing wall and an ice-skating rink. Cruise fans the world over were scrambling to get on board.

How to Book a Cruise Using Points and Miles

Nearly two decades later, Navigator is no longer the world's largest cruise ship — not by a long shot. It barely cracks the Top 30 in size. But as of this spring, it's once again a big deal in the cruise world. That's because Royal Caribbean just poured $115 million into the vessel in an unusual bow-to-stern makeover designed to transform it into the king of short-haul cruises out of Miami, the world's largest cruise hub.

After seeing it on a quick, three-night getaway earlier this month, I might say it's the new king of short-haul cruises anywhere. It's now home to two of the coolest water attractions at sea; a revamped pool deck with a tropical vibe that's prefect for a short cruise; and a bevy of new bars and restaurants.

Reaching New Cruisers

There are a bunch of cruise ships dedicated to short cruises out of Florida (and by short, we're talking just three or four days). But as cruising regulars know, they're generally not the newest or most-dazzling vessels. Cruise lines typically reserve their latest ships for the bigger seven-night market.

Generally low priced and easy to do on a whim, short cruises out of Florida appeal heavily to a local market that isn't looking for anything too fancy. They're just out for a quick, inexpensive getaway. For just a few hundred dollars, a Floridian can drive to a port after a half-day's work on Friday, catch a three-night sailing that includes a couple stops in the Bahamas and be back in time for work on Monday. It's a low-stakes alternative to a weekend at the beach.

That said, short cruises out of Florida are also hugely popular with first-time cruisers from all over the country who want to give cruising a try without making too big a commitment. They're also hot with millennials, who are big on short getaways. As Royal Caribbean president and CEO Michael Bayley told me during a recent interview, those two groups are increasingly critical to impress if you're a cruise line wanting to grow your business. You want them coming back. And that recently got Royal Caribbean rethinking it's short-haul strategy.

It was almost like an epiphany, Bayley said.

"We suddenly thought to ourselves, 'hold on a second, we've been putting our oldest, smallest ships in this short-cruise space,' and why would we do that?" he said. "Why don't we take one of our bigger ships like Navigator … and totally amp it up with features and products and services that we know are going to be very attractive to that [first-timer and millennial] market."

Added Thrills

As I saw on our recent visit, the "amp up" that Bayley was describing hit just about every corner of Navigator of the Seas.

The big Instagram-worthy addition is The Blaster, a new waterslide at the top of the ship that is, admittedly, a blast. It's not just any waterslide, but the longest waterslide ever on a cruise ship. Undulating more than 800 feet around the back of the vessel (and, at times, over its sides!), it's known as an aqua coaster and features water jets that propel you up as well as down as you careen from start to finish. As you can imagine, adding something like that to a cruise ship is no easy feat (frankly, I was sort of amazed by the engineering that carried it around the ship's existing basketball court, rock climbing wall and FlowRider surf simulator), and it's something that Royal Caribbean and most other lines have never attempted before. Only Disney offers something similar, if slightly smaller, on two ships.

Also new in the same back-of-the-ship area is Riptide, the only head-first mat racer waterslide at sea. Its addition is another impressive-for-a-cruise-ship feat of engineering that offers something that's never been seen before on a vessel. The fact that you ride it head-first is thrilling, but you're also guaranteed to get serious water up your nose (trust me).

If Royal Caribbean had just stopped there, you'd still have a ship that many diehard cruise fans would get on a plane from almost anywhere in the country to try — if only for the bragging rights on social. But Royal Caribbean didn't stop there.

Chill Time

A combination of thrill and chill seems to be the new mantra for Royal Caribbean development. Just look at what the line has done at its just-reopened private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. In the case of Navigator, the "chill" part of the equation meant a complete makeover of the ship's main pool zone, now tropical-themed with new colorful cabanas (free to use on a first-come, first-serve basis), decorative palm tree-like structures, and a reshaped pool that now has a shallow area with partially submerged lounge chairs. There's also a new splash area for the munchkins.

Also part of the change was the addition of a three-level bar hangout called The Lime and Coconut that cascades down one side of the pool area. Its base-level has its very own bicycle pedal-powered blender, should you want to save the Earth by instructing the bartender not to use the electricity-using kind to mix your piña colada (and ignore other environmental impacts ). You'll have to operate it yourself, but you'll get a great Instagram shot from the effort.

The second level of The Lime and Coconut is a balcony bar with padded sectional chairs and high-top tables. One more deck up is the Rooftop, which is a little like a secret retreat; when I went up there late one afternoon, I had the place almost to myself.

Additions to the pool area also include a no-extra-charge taco, burrito and quesadilla bar called El Loco Fresh in one corner and an extra-charge Johnny Rocket's Express burger outlet in another corner — nods to passengers (like me) who are too lazy to leave the pool area to grab a bite.

Interior Upgrades

Down below, in the ship's interior public areas, more big changes include the addition of The Bamboo Room, a Polynesian-themed watering hole with kitschy cocktails served in tiki glasses that's squarely aimed at millennials (and much more fun than the wine bar it replaced). There's also a new family-geared sports bar and arcade called Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade that occupies what used to be shops; a new restaurant called Hooked Seafood that replaced a Mexican joint; and an Italian restaurant, Jamie's Italian, designed by British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver (which took the place of another, apparently less successful Italian eatery).

Other changes included the addition of glow-in-the-dark laser tag (set in the ship's ice-skating rink during the daytime and offered as an activity at no extra charge) and an escape room. Cabins also got a big refresh, as did the ship's casino, Windjammer buffet, fitness center and kids' areas.

Short-Haul Ship Upgrades

Miami isn't the only hub getting a jazzed-up Royal Caribbean ship for the short-cruise market. A sister vessel to Navigator that debuted just a year later, Mariner of the Seas, just started sailing short cruises out of Port Canaveral, Florida, this week after a similarly massive overhaul (albeit one that didn't include the installation of an aqua coaster or a mat racer slide). A third Royal Caribbean ship that was recently spiced up with millions of dollars in improvements, Independence of the Seas, will soon be sailing short cruises out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The makeovers of the three ships are just the start of a four-year, billion-dollar program at the line to overhaul 10 of its middle-aged ships. It's likely that more of them will redeploy to the short-haul market down the road.

In Miami at least, Royal Caribbean now has the ship to beat in the short-haul market (in Port Canaveral, the line's Mariner has some competition in Disney Cruise Line's eight-year-old Disney Dream, which has a lot of bells and whistles). Neither of Navigator's two main competitors in the Miami short-haul market — Carnival Victory and Norwegian Sky — quite compares (although I absolutely love Norwegian Sky's short Cuba itinerary, which is the best in the business, in my opinion).

What It Costs

The revamped Navigator offers two short-haul itineraries to the Bahamas out of Miami. Three-night weekend sailings starting on Fridays feature a stop at Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Nassau. Four-night mid-week sailings starting on Mondays offer the same two calls plus a day at sea.

The Best Credit Cards for Booking Cruises

As of Friday, the three-night trips were starting at $329 per person, not including taxes and fees of $98.24. That works out to about $142 per night, per person, for a package that includes your lodging, transportation and meals. The four-night trips are starting at $303 per person, plus taxes and fees. That works out to about $100 per night per person, making the four-night trips significantly less expensive on a per-day basis. There's a premium to go over a weekend.

Of course, the rates above are just for one person and based on "double occupancy" of your cabin, so the per room rate really is twice that amount. And it doesn't include any extra charges you ring up on board. While meals are included at several on-board restaurants, you'll pay extra for Hooked Seafood, Jamie's Italian and several other "specialty" dining destinations on the ship. Just like at most land resorts, you'll also pay extra for drinks. Most beers at the bars on Navigator run $7 to $8, while wine starts at $8 per glass ($29 for the least expensive bottle).

Also note the above fares are for the least-expensive windowless "interior" cabin. There are all sorts of cabin categories on Royal Caribbean ships, at a wide range of price points. To upgrade to a room with a window, the starting rate for the three-night trips jumps to $400 per person plus the taxes and fees. Cabins with balconies start at $475; suites begin at $788.

Just as with flights, pricing for cruises fluctuate week-by-week depending on demand, and the rates above are for sailings during the least expensive time of the year — specifically, this coming January. You'll pay more for more popular times of year, such as July (when rates for the three-night sailings currently start at $510 per person).

One other thing for which you'll need to budget is the automatic service gratuity that Royal Caribbean adds to bills, which runs $14.50 per person, per day for most cabins. Suite passengers pay more.

(Editor's note: TPG always tries to pay full price for any travel its staff takes and usually doesn't inform companies in advance of our plans to review. However, there are times where -- especially with cruise lines -- we need to work with travel providers to gain early access and they won't accept rates higher than their special prices for travel agents and media. For this sailing , TPG paid $450, as well as additional fees for access to attractions, beverages and food.)

The Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas was built in 2002. It was renovated in 2019. It's considered a medium size ship. Coming in at 1,020 ft long and 157 ft wide, it's roughly the length of 2.8 football fields, as wide as 3 tractor trailers, and the same height as a 14-story building.

Navigator of the Seas Size and Passengers

The Navigator of the Seas can hold 3,386 based on double occupancy (two people per room) and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Navigator of the Seas has a space ratio of 41. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 (with a bigger number meaning more space per person) so this ship's space-to-person ratio is about average.

The Navigator of the Seas is one of five Voyager-class ships currently sailing with Royal Caribbean. The Voyager-class ships were the first to introduce the Royal Promenade, a large central hub that runs through the middle of the ship, offering shopping, restaurants, bars, and activities. It also saw the introduction of the Studio B Ice Skating Rink and a climbing wall onboard. The Navigator of the Seas is very similar to its sister-ships; Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas, although each ship may have some differences.

Navigator of the Seas Food and Restaurants

Starbucks on the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas

Food is a big part of any cruise, and there will plenty on the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas. You have 11 different dining options to choose from. Of those options, 4 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 7 options have an additional fee. Some of those options are a set price and some have a la cart menu pricing. Only 36% of the dining options are included meaning you might spend more while on the ship due to the additional fees.

Navigator of the Seas Bars and Drinks

Royal Caribbean's Schooner Bar

Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas has 11 different bars and lounges where you can enjoy a beer or cocktail. It also has 1 other bars that are available for select guests.

Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.

Royal Caribbean also serves the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship. Most Royal Caribbean ships also have Coke Freestyle machines where you can make 100 different flavor combinations.

Pools and Hot Tubs on Navigator of the Seas

Caribbean Themed Main Pool Area on the Navigator of the Seas

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day in a pool, a cruise might not be the right choice. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas has a total of 3 pools and 6 hot tubs.

Tired of loud kids and splashing? 1 of the pools and 2 of the hot tubs are adults only.

Navigator of the Seas Features and Activities

There are quite a few things to do on the Navigator of the Seas. These are the main amenities that are available. Some are included in the cost of the cruise, while others have an additional charge.

Royal Caribbean is a mainstream cruise line. Mainstream cruise lines cater to a variety of guests, hoping to provide something for everyone. These typically cost about $100 - $350 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year.

Navigator of the Seas Onboard Costs

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Royal Caribbean ship.

Royal Caribbean uses dynamic pricing, which means the pricing for many things will vary per sailing. The daily gratuities and tip are consistent across the fleet, but the pricing for the drink package, internet, and excursions will change. The only way to know your price is to consult the Royal Caribbean cruise planner once you're booked.

17 Royal Caribbean Cruise Tips for First-time Passengers, According to Experts

Here's how to maximize your Royal Caribbean cruise, whether it's your first or fifth time on board.

Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield.

If you’re shopping for a traditional cruise, chances are you’ll consider Royal Caribbean. The household name among big-ship cruise lines is the second-largest carrier on the seas (after Carnival). It has 27 ships in its fleet, including the new Icon of the Seas , the world’s largest cruise ship, with room for 7,600 passengers. Another four mega-ships are under construction. Even Royal Caribbean’s smallest vessels hold more than 2,400 passengers, so by any definition, they’re big.

If you’ve never sailed with Royal Caribbean, it can take a while to learn the ropes — nautical reference intended. And since your vacation time is precious, we asked some cruise line experts how to make the most of your first voyage. Here are their tips and tricks for first-time Royal Caribbean guests.

Don't wait to book.

It’s a piece of advice that goes for most cruise lines. Matt Hochberg of Royal Caribbean Blog , a fan and information site that's not affiliated with the company, says to book your Royal Caribbean cruise “as early as possible — as in now. It’s not like airfare where you can wait on the chance that prices will go down. Cruise prices stay where they are and only go up, and right now, demand is as high as it’s ever been. Your best bet is to book as early as you can, like 12 to 24 months out, to lock in the lowest price.”

Make show reservations in advance, too.

“Would you show up in New York for a theater weekend and simply cross your fingers and hope you get tickets to the shows you want?” asks Rob Clabbers, a Travel + Leisure A-List advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel . The answer is probably not, so use the "Manage My Cruise" feature on the Royal Caribbean website and book the shows you don’t want to miss. “You’re more likely to get the reservations you want and you’ll avoid having to scramble for seats or stand in line on your first day on board,” he adds.

Study the ship layout before your cruise.

If you’re like me, the anticipation of a cruise is half the fun. Use the weeks and months before your sailing to study deck plans and hone in on your favorite amenities. The largest Royal Caribbean ships are like small cities — the Icon and Oasis class ships even have their own neighborhoods. If you already have your bearings before embarking, you’ll waste less time riding the wrong elevator or wandering the wrong deck when trying to get to your destination — or back to your stateroom.

Get a jump on online check-in.

As soon as you book, access the "Manage My Cruise" portal on the Royal Caribbean website (the Royal Caribbean app has some of the same features). Then, as soon as online check-in opens, get right on it so you can secure the earliest possible window. “It makes the cruise terminal experience way faster,” says Hochberg. “About 30 days in advance, they’ll give you a check-in window. Arrive right around that time and you’ll breeze through — you don’t even stop moving.”

Opt for a drinks package.

You won’t go thirsty on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but free drinks are limited to standard coffee and tea, tap water, hot chocolate, milk, and a few other basics. Everything else costs extra — often a lot extra. “Even if you don’t drink alcohol, it may be worth checking out the options in advance, if you’re into premium coffees, sodas, juices, or bottled waters," says Clabbers. “Royal Caribbean occasionally offers promotions on the ‘Manage My Cruise’ [portal] that may save you money on certain beverage packages.”

Pack a swimsuit in your carry-on.

“Royal Caribbean ships have so many great pools and water features,” says Hochberg. And they get really crowded. Get ahead of the other passengers by packing a swimsuit in your daypack or carry-on. You can enjoy the pools, water parks, or the popular FlowRider surf simulator while you wait — often several hours — to access your cabin. “Embarkation day is one of the best times to go to the pools,” Hochberg adds. If you’re traveling with kids, you'll be glad you stashed those suits in your bag.

Splurge on a suite.

“Royal Caribbean ships can feel large and busy, so maybe you want to upgrade to a suite,” says Clabbers. Most suites start at around 300 square feet and go up from there — both in dimensions and price. You can expect to pay about twice as much for a suite, but the additional space may offer a welcome break from all the hubbub on board. Clabbers adds, “Depending on the category and ship you choose, you may enjoy suite-only restaurants and lounges, VIP treatment and embarkation, and even Royal Genie butler service.”

Asses how much drinking you’ll really do.

Royal Caribbean’s Deluxe Beverage Package — the only one that includes alcohol — follows a dynamic pricing model between $56 and $105 per day, per person, with prices varying depending on the ship, itinerary, and other factors. Alcoholic and soft drinks are expensive on board, but you still have to indulge a lot to make the package worth the investment. If you’re not sure how much you'll drink (and don’t want to feel obligated to do so simply because you’ve paid for a package), consider going a la carte for the first few days of your cruise. You can always add a drinks package later, as long as you still have at least four days left on your sailing.

Find your place in the sun.

If you want a poolside lounge chair, you'll have to arrive by 10 a.m. at the latest on most Royal Caribbean ships, according to Hochberg. “People who sleep in and roll up at noon are not getting a chair by the pool,” he says. That said, the ships do have plenty of outdoor space, even if it’s not right by a pool. “If you just want to be outside, there are other chairs. Walk to the front or back of the ship. The further away you are from the pool, the more chairs you’ll find,” he adds, noting the promenade deck on any Royal Caribbean ship is always a great spot to read.

Consider a balcony cabin.

Like most cruise lines, Royal Caribbean is adding more balcony cabins and suites on its ships, and that’s, of course, due to customer demand. “Balconies are the most popular option,” says Hochberg. Though they cost more than an interior or non-balcony room, they’re still reasonably priced compared to suites. Hochberg adds, “They offer more space and fresh air, and if you do get seasick, the view and fresh air help.”

Choose an older ship.

If your vacation is more about the destination than the journey, you should consider an older, smaller Royal Caribbean ship, especially given the demand for their newer Oasis and Icon vessels. Radiance and Vision classes are among the oldest and smallest in the fleet, but still offer plenty of big-ship amenities without the “city at sea” feel. Hochberg calls these ships “much more manageable,” to the point that you probably don’t even need to make show or specialty dining reservations in advance — though you might still want to book once you’re on board.

Look for no-kid zones.

Royal Caribbean is a family-friendly cruise line — there are a slew of facilities and programs made just for kids. But if you prefer a more adult experience, Royal Caribbean offers options. “Certain areas are adults-only, such as the casino and nightclubs,” says Hochberg. While bars and lounges technically allow children to enter, he says it’s rare to see kids in these areas in the evening. Later dinner seatings also mean fewer young kids. Almost every ship in the fleet offers the Solarium, an adults-only section with a pool and whirlpool, a sundeck, and a bar. On the brand’s private Caribbean island playground, Perfect Day at CocoCay , Hideaway Beach is the adults-only pool and beach, though entrance is for a fee. Hochberg also says that “on longer sailings — those past seven nights — the amount of kids drops precipitously.”

If you can’t snag a show reservation, try walking in.

Because booked passengers scoop up show reservations as soon as they’re offered online, you may not get your first choice when it comes to the many show offerings, which include ice-skating performances, aqua theater, and Broadway-quality productions. But don’t give up, says Hochberg. “Show up at least 30 minutes before the show, even if it's sold out,” he says. “You’ll almost certainly be able to get in, as people blow off their [advance] reservations.”

Cost out The Key program.

Clabbers says Royal Caribbean cruisers should look into The Key program , the paid upgrade that’s akin to the Genie+ service at Disney theme parks. “It provides priority boarding access, a welcome lunch, high-speed internet access, fast lane access to onboard activities, private time at the FlowRider surf simulator, dedicated theater seats at shows, and other niceties.” Prices fluctuate, though, so before you purchase, compare the cost of The Key versus that of Royal Caribbean’s Voom Surf & Stream internet package. If there’s not much difference in cost (remember, it’s per user, per day), The Key benefits are worth springing on. However, if there’s a big price difference — or you want to disconnect during your cruise — you can skip The Key.

Look into third-party excursions.

Shore excursions must also be reserved in advance, and depending on when you book, you might not get your first choice of activity or time slot. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay on board or near the port all day. “Of course, Royal Caribbean offers shore excursions wherever they go,” says Clabbers. “But if you like more options and potentially smaller groups or lower fares, take a look at excursions offered by third-party providers.” Clabbers likes Shore Excursions Group and Project Expedition . “If you prefer private [excursions], Context Travel offers cultural and historical tours and activities in cities around the world.”

BYOB — to a point.

Perhaps you don’t want to buy a beverage package, but you’d like to have a glass of wine or two during your cruise. Royal Caribbean lets you bring one 750-milliliter bottle of wine per cabin guest, per cruise, and for many light drinkers, that’s plenty. Don’t try and bring more than this, and don’t put it in your checked luggage — it will be confiscated and returned at the end of your journey, as will any alcohol you buy in ports of call. You can also bring up to 12 containers (bottles, cans, or cartons) with up to 17 ounces each of soft drinks per stateroom. If you bring your bottle of wine to a restaurant or other public area, you’ll be charged a corkage fee.

Skip the transatlantic cruise if you're a first-timer.

Transatlantic repositioning cruises are not ideal for first-time Royal Caribbean passengers, according to Hochberg. “Transatlantic cruises are like a fine wine. Once you’re more acclimated and know you like the shipboard experience, they offer great value priced per night,” he says. But you don’t want to get on board and find that you don’t like the brand, or worse, don’t like cruising. “They are long cruises with lots of sea days, and are very susceptible to the weather.”

The 6 best cruise ship waterslides and watery fun zones

Call it the Battle of the Waterslides.

In the last few years, the big boys of the cruise industry — Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line — have been locked in a game of one-upmanship when it comes to waterslides and watery fun zones on vessels.

In addition to such over-the-top, new attractions as go-kart tracks and roller coasters , the brands behind the biggest megaresorts at sea have been packing the top decks of their vessels with even more over-the-top watery allures.

Royal Caribbean, for instance, added an 800-foot-long “water coaster” to the back of its 3,386-passenger Navigator of the Seas just a few years ago. It’s one of more than two dozen giant waterslides the line has added to more than half a dozen ships in the last seven years.

Royal Caribbean also plans a record six waterslides on its next new ship, Icon of the Seas, which is scheduled to debut in January 2024.

But as recently as early 2016, Royal Caribbean didn’t have a single waterslide on any of its vessels.

MSC Cruises also has gone big with giant water parks in the past seven years, with as many as four waterslides on more than half a dozen of its newest vessels. Norwegian has loaded up its most recent ships with giant water parks, too — some have as many as five waterslides!

Not to be outdone, Carnival, an early adopter of waterslides on ships, has added sprawling water park areas with multiple waterslides to almost every vessel in its fleet.

A brief history of water attractions at sea

In the beginning, there was the pool. As watery cruise ship attractions go, it has long been the staple — something found on nearly every cruise vessel going back to the 1970s.

But as early as 1978, at least one line was spicing up its Lido decks with a little waterslide fun — little being the operative word. That’s the year Carnival added a single slide into the pool on its 728-passenger Festivale — a slide so small it’s now hilarious to think it was touted as an attraction.

Often cited as the first waterslide ever on a cruise vessel, the Festivale slide was of a sort that was found at backyard pools at the time. The cruise industry was still in its infancy, of course, and ships were orders of magnitude smaller than they are today. Festivale measured just 32,697 tons, about one-seventh the size of today’s biggest cruise vessels.

Carnival, the so-called Fun Ship line, would go on to become the early leader in waterslides at sea. The 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy, which debuted in 1990, was the first cruise ship with a significant waterslide. It measured 115 feet in length.

Just six years later, in 1996, Carnival would make news with the unveiling of a 214-foot-long corkscrew waterslide on what then was called Destiny. (The ship currently sails as the Carnival Sunshine after being rebuilt in 2013.) At the time, Destiny was the biggest cruise ship in the world.

In more recent years, Carnival has gone into waterslide-building overdrive. The line has added full-blown water park areas with waterslides, watery play zones and other features to all but four of its 25 ships. All but one of Carnival’s ships (Carnival Luminosa) now have at least one waterslide.

One of the Carnival water parks, on the line’s 5-year-old Carnival Horizon, even has Disney-style theming revolving around Dr. Seuss characters.

Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean only began going big with waterslides on ships in the past decade or so. Many of the newest vessels from the brands have massive water park areas. Some of the brands are retrofitting big waterslides onto older ships, too.

Additionally, family-focused Disney Cruise Line now has major water attractions on all its vessels.

Where you’ll find the biggest waterslides at sea

If your idea of the perfect cruise ship is one loaded to the gills with waterslides and watery fun zones (plus all sorts of other over-the-top attractions), you’ll want to stick to the biggest floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC Cruises and Carnival.

At Royal Caribbean, that means the giant Oasis-class vessels , which include Wonder of the Seas — the world’s largest cruise ship. At Norwegian, you’ll find the biggest waterslides and water parks on the line’s relatively recently built Breakaway Plus-, Breakaway- and Epic-class ships. At MSC Cruises, the new Seaside-, Meraviglia-, Meraviglia Plus- and World-class vessels have the line’s big water parks.

Big lines that have steered clear of the water-park-at-sea trend include Princess Cruises, Holland America and Celebrity Cruises. Geared more toward couples than families and typically drawing an older demographic, all three of these lines have stuck to a more subdued feel for the outdoor areas of their ships. The top decks of vessels operated by Princess, Holland America and Celebrity still mostly revolve around traditional swimming areas with pools, hot tubs and lounge chairs.

Ready for a splashy, top-deck thrill? These are the most spectacular watery attractions at sea.

The Perfect Storm

Where you’ll find it: Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas.

This isn’t just one giant waterslide; it’s a whole complex of waterslides, each one among the most exciting you’ll find anywhere on the world’s oceans.

The Perfect Storm is found on four of Royal Caribbean’s massive Oasis-class vessels — Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas — as well as the smaller Liberty of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas. The complex includes two four-deck-high racer slides called Cyclone and Typhoon, where you can do side-by-side speed tests with your travel partner.

On the four Oasis-class ships, there’s also a third, Champagne bowl-style slide called Supercell. It’ll swirl you around a big basin before plummeting you “down the drain” into a plunge pool. On Liberty of the Seas, a third slide called The Tidal Wave sends you screaming down a steep hill on an inner tube to a nearly vertical incline. Zooming upward, topping out and dropping back, you’ll get a blissful moment of complete weightlessness.

Note that Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas also has a waterslide area called Perfect Storm — but it’s completely different. More on that in a moment.

The Blaster

Where you’ll find it: Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas.

The Blaster is the Big Daddy of waterslides at sea. At 800 feet, it’s the longest ever built on a cruise ship. Added to Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas in 2019, it’s a seemingly endless stretch of yellow and orange tubing that winds around the back deck of the vessel like a snake.

A true sight to behold, The Blaster is so long because it’s what’s known as a water coaster. It features water jets that propel you up, down and forward — extending the ride — as you careen around the ship’s basketball court and surfing simulator in an inner tube. At times, you go flying over the side of the ship, over open water (not that you have much time to take in the view).

Royal Caribbean has named the area on Navigator of the Seas where The Blaster is located the Perfect Storm — the same name used for waterslide areas on six other ships — but the area is completely different than what you’ll find on the other vessels. In addition to The Blaster, the Perfect Storm area on Navigator of the Seas includes a headfirst mat racer slide called Riptide — the first of its kind at sea.

Where you’ll find it: Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

Leave it to family-focused Disney Cruise Line to come up with the coolest watery family attraction at sea. AquaDuck is a water coaster, like The Blaster on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas, and is found on Disney’s two Dream-class ships. But don’t expect anything too white-knuckle. The ride is relatively gentle by water park standards, mainly because it’s designed for kids of all ages (and their parents, who can ride along on inner tubes for two).

While AquaDuck is slightly shorter than The Blaster at 765 feet in length, it has a bigger presence, thanks to its prime location encircling the main pool area. If you’re lounging up top, it’s hard to miss the massive, clear acrylic tubing of the ride, which is held up by 46 giant white stilts.

In addition to AquaDuck, the two Disney ships with the attraction (Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream ) have a relatively small, kid-friendly waterslide next to the centrally located Mickey’s Pool. Dubbed Mickey’s Slide, it’s held up by a giant Mickey hand, which is delightful. Both ships also have a watery play zone for toddlers called Nemo’s Reef. Plus, Disney Fantasy has a watery fun zone with water jets, geysers and bubblers called AquaLab.

Note that Disney’s newest ship — Disney Wish — has a water coaster attraction similar to the AquaDuck called the AquaMouse. The big difference: Riders will see animated shorts while riding up the ramp at the start of the ride.

Carnival WaterWorks

Where you’ll find it: Nearly all Carnival ships.

When it comes to waterslides on ships, cruise giant Carnival is still the undisputed king. The Fun Ship line began adding them to vessels way back in 1978, and there’s now at least one waterslide on every ship in the Carnival fleet — something no other line can say.

Indeed, on all Carnival ships, there’s now not just a single waterslide but a whole water park area. Called WaterWorks, these areas vary in size and features from vessel to vessel, but they typically have one or two big waterslides, a watery play zone with interactive water features and a large continuously filling dump bucket that periodically soaks everybody within range.

You’ll typically find the biggest Carnival water park complexes on the newest Carnival ships, such as Mardi Gras , Celebration and Carnival Venezia . All three have three waterslides — one more than most Carnival ships.

Aqua Park (Norwegian Cruise Line)

Where you’ll find it: Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore.

Norwegian Cruise Line began going big with waterslides in 2010 when it debuted Norwegian Epic. And boy, did it go big! Norwegian Epic offers three monster waterslides, including the thrilling Epic Plunge — a 200-foot-long tube ride that ends in a swirling bowl. Epic Plunge is part of Norwegian Epic’s Aqua Park, the first water park on a Norwegian ship. Norwegian has since added Aqua Parks to six more new vessels, including its biggest ship, the 4-year-old Norwegian Encore .

Norwegian’s Aqua Parks vary in size and attractions from ship to ship, but some of them, such as the one on Norwegian Breakaway, have as many as five separate multistory waterslides. Yes, you read that right: Five waterslides on a single cruise ship!

On Norwegian Breakaway, the lineup includes twin free-fall slides that drop passengers nearly straight down several stories; two side-by-side twisting racer slides; and a family-friendly slide with a more modest drop. For sheer variety, the complex is hard to beat.

Aqua Park (MSC Cruises)

Where you’ll find it: MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore, MSC Seaview, MSC Seaside, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Euribia, MSC World Europa.

Fast-growing MSC Cruises has joined the waterslide wars in the last few years — and in a massive way. Each of the 10 ships the line has unveiled since 2017 offers a full-blown water park on its top deck that’s packed with waterslides and other watery fun.

On North America-based MSC Seaside, the Aqua Park has four waterslides and a children’s play area with interactive water features. The waterslides include two massive, 525-foot-long dueling slides that extend over the sides of the ship. The top of the Aqua Park on MSC Seaside is also home to the liftoff point for a zip line that soars 344 feet across the top of the vessel.

Other MSC Cruises water parks at sea include the winter-themed Polar Aqua Park on MSC Meraviglia, which offers a suspended-in-the-sky ropes course in addition to four waterslides. There’s also the Aquaplay area for the little ones.

A handful of ships even have virtual reality waterslides that involve riders wearing virtual reality headsets as part of the experience.

In all, 14 of MSC Cruises’ 22 vessels now have at least one waterslide on their top decks.

The 6 best cruise ship waterslides and watery fun zones

Meet the Norwegian-owned cruise challenger to Carnival and Royal Caribbean that just raised $1.54 billion

a cruise in the ocean

Viking had humble beginnings.

The now-listed cruise line was once just a venture by “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships,” as the company’s CEO, Torstein Hagen, puts it in Viking’s prospectus .

But a lot has changed in 27 years. Now, the Norwegian-owned, Bermuda-based business has a staff of 10,000 catering to guests with a taste for the finer things in life.

The cruise operator, which made its name in European river tours, launched its initial public offering at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday. It raised $1.54 billion , according to Reuters, making it the biggest listing in the U.S. this year.

Viking rebounded strongly after the COVID-19 pandemic decimated cruise travel and its public listing comes as luxury consumers are spending more on travel and less on shopping. Some of Viking’s competitors, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, have seen record demand for cruises—opening a world of opportunity for the smaller company.

Viking’s beginning

Viking was founded in 1997 by Hagen, who controls most of the company with his daughter, Karine Hagen.

From the start it aimed to give travelers an immersive experience in local cultures as they toured in one of its four river vessels. In the past three decades or so, Viking has expanded its fleet to 92 ships offering three types of experiences via rivers, oceans, and expeditions.

The company has also benefited from some savvy marketing plays: It sponsored PBS Masterpiece series, such as Downton Abbey , and offered themed trips linked to those shows.

Between 2015 and 2023, Viking’s revenue grew at a compound annual rate of 14.4%, outpacing the rest of the cruise industry in the river and luxury ocean segments during this period, the company said in a public filing .

Viking has carved its strategic niche among older, well-off customers, a group it believes is “underserved.” These are not boozy party boats, and there are no kids allowed.

“Our target demographic has greater financial stability, which can make them more resilient to economic conditions and more willing to invest in high-quality travel experiences,” Viking said.

And that’s the space it hopes it can dominate, with the help of its IPO funds.

The Viking founder and road ahead

Hagen didn’t enter the world of cruises till the 1970s.

A physics major in school, Hagen earned an MBA at Harvard University before entering management consulting. He dabbled with entrepreneurship a few times before finally succeeding, Bloomberg reported .

When business for Viking’s river cruises, its first service, began to pick up, Hagen expanded to offer journeys worldwide—from expeditions in Antarctica to river cruises in Vietnam.

Viking is on an expedition of its own now that its shares are traded. Last year, the cruise line hosted close to 650,000 guests and generated $4.7 billion in revenue, up by almost 50% from 2022. Its underlying profits were $1.1 billion for the same period, according to Viking’s prospectus.

The cruise company is still much smaller than rivals like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. But it’s a global leader in some segments, such as luxury ocean cruises.

Following a strong open, Viking’s market valuation has reached more than $10 billion, putting Hagen’s wealth at $5 billion. As the appetite for luxury travel builds , Viking is ready to ride the wave.
