There’s now a safari just hours from Pune

Only a few kilometres from Pune, unending swathes of grasslands sit untouched by urban development. These patches, seemingly flat and barren, are the feeding and breeding grounds for Maharashtra’s wildlife. Now, to experience this buzzing ecosystem hiding in plain sight, the Pune Forest Department has inaugurated a grassland safari for tourists and local residents. Which zones are open for the safaris near Pune The safari will cover two zones near Pune—Kadbanwadi in Indapur district and Shirsuphal in Baramati district. Both districts are roughly three hours from Pune and about an hour from each other.

What to spot at the safaris near Pune

The safari in Indapur’s Kadbanwadi zone starts at Kadbanwadi gate and covers a 30km track before ending back at the gate. The major forest departments along the route are in the villages of Kadbanwadi, Kalas and Vitthalwadi. The safari in the Shirsuphal zone in Baramati starts at Gadikhel gate and ends at Parwadi gate. The 40km journey covers the villages of Gadikhel, Shirsuphal, Sablewadi and Parwadi. These grasslands are home to myriads of species of animals, such as striped hyenas, jackals, chinkaras or Indian gazelles, the Bengal fox and the elusive Indian grey wolf. The grasslands of Indapur and Baramati are also great birding spots near Pune, boasting more than 330 varieties such as the rain quail, ashy-crowned sparrow lark, grey-necked bunting and painted francolin.

What are the safari slots The grassland safaris near Pune will remain open all year round. There’s a morning safari from 6am to 9am and an afternoon safari from 3pm to 6pm. While accommodations in the area are scanty at the moment, one day of exploring is adequate to experience the grasslands, making the safari an ideal day trip from Pune. How to book a safari near Pune and what does it cost Those interested can book a slot online at grasslandsafari.org , after which they will be allotted a locally trained guide. It’s essential to note that the forest department does not provide a vehicle for the tour, and only private four-wheelers with a maximum capacity of seven (including the driver and guide) are permitted in the zones. The total cost for the safari is Rs2,100, broken down into: Vehicle entry fee: £15 (Rs1500) Guide fee: £5 (Rs500) Camera fee: £1 (Rs100)

4 new safari experiences in India

From spotting lions to scouring grasslands, a host of new experiences are in store for safari enthusiasts in India. Either launched earlier this year or slated for the coming months, these expeditions offer a fresh means to explore the country’s varied biodiversity. Here are the new safaris in India to book in 2024:

Lion safari in Siliguri Till now, a lion safari in India was only possible at Gujarat’s Gir National Park. But now, at the other end of the country, North Bengal Wild Animals Park in West Bengal is launching a new one to spot the big cats. The park in Siliguri is set to get four lions for the experience, after which it will open the experience to the public in January 2024.

Cycling safari in Pench National Park In August 2023, Pench National Park got a new cycling safari in Khursapar village that allows you to explore the forest sustainably. The 48km scenic route begins and ends at the Kolitmara gate, passing through Narhar, Banera, Sila Devi, Chargaon and Kuwara Bhimsen on the way. Cyclists are led by a guide, who helps spot birds such as the Indian bush lark and coppersmith barbet. One can also take a shot at sighting tigers, leopards, sloth bears, Indian gaurs and more.

Tiger safari in Chamarajanagar Roughly 60km from Mysuru, the dense forest around the town of Chamarajanagar is home to an impressive population of tigers. Of this cover, an 18km stretch running through the Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary has been chalked off as a tiger safari zone. This exciting experience in Karnataka will open to the public for a two-month period starting December. These first few months will help gauge the area’s potential for wildlife exploration, says the Deputy Conservator of Forests of the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Division.

Jungle Safari right in the City of Pune

Taljai Hill is a several acres reserved forest area right in the city with residential areas on all sides. The forest is very popular with locals where I visit at least 5 times a week for my daily walk of 4 KM. The air is clean fresh with rough pathways throughout the jungle. You can have up to 10 Km walk without repeating. There are small or steep slopes as per your liking. There is a small pond at the entrance with some ducks quacking. Children sure love it. There is a small plain area where people will be having exercise. In early the morning there are a couple of Laughter Clubs, Groups doing Yoga and Surya Namaskara. In the morning you can watch beautiful sunrise and sunset in the evening. A panoramic view of the city is also available. Morning you can hear all kinds of birds chirping. Occasionally you come across rabbits. Most important attraction is flocks of Peacocks. In the beginning of monsoon if you are lucky you can watch the peacock dance in full glory.

Forest reserve close to the city. This place is full of peacocks and peacock sounds. Highly recommended for morning and evening walks.

Located near Sahakar Nagar in the heart of the city, Taljai hill is a fantastic place with trees, open grounds, a temple - a lot of nature in the middle of concrete jungle. A small ghat like winding road takes you on top of the hill where there is also a temple along with a play area. A perfect place for morning walk or evening stroll

A beautiful hill for a morning walk. Small temple at the entrance. A sports complex & sweeming pool. You may come across some peacock while morning walk.

Taljai hill is an amazing walk amidst the woods for morning / evening walk lovers. Well placed behind Parvati hill, it has access via Shahu College as well as sahakarnagar area. Though the green cover in the hills have come down over the years, it is still a wonderful place to go to!

Taljai forest is located in the Sahakar Nagar area of Pune. It is a huge forest that is open for people in the mornings and the evening. The place is HUGE and you can spend hours watching the beauty of nature. The Taljai forest has rabbits, jungle hens, peacocks, mongoose and all kind of birds. The flora is also beautiful and untouched by the commercialization of man. There is a small man made lake which has swans floating in it. There is a bhoot bangla at the beginning of the Taljai forest as well. Go with your family and wear trekking shoes.

Pune: Grassland Safari in Pune and Solapur to be launched soon; Online bookings to commence from October 18

Pune, Oct 16, 2023: An innovative initiative by the forest department of Maharashtra is poised to introduce a grassland safari in Pune and Solapur districts. Touted as the first of its kind in the state, the initiative is slated to kick-off online bookings for citizens through its official application starting October 18.

The grassland safari in Pune, primarily targeting areas in Baramati and Indapur tehsils, offer a unique opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to witness various animals and birds native to the regions around Pune and Solapur. The forest department , in collaboration with villagers and wildlife experts, has formulated a comprehensive tourism plan to foster forest development in the targeted areas.

These local villagers have been equipped with essential training in management and tour guide skills, aimed at amplifying wildlife protection and conservation. The project is a segment of the forest department’s overarching grassland management program, with a secondary objective to spur employment in the region, anticipating a surge in tourism once the official bookings begin.

According to media reports, data from the department illustrates that 3.27 percent of the overall area, approximately 2160.77 hectares, encompasses patches of these vital grasslands. Essential for wild herbivore and carnivore species like blackbuck, chinkara, hare, Indian wolf, and more, the department’s decision to initiate the safari in two primary spots, Kadbanwadi in Indapur and Shirsufal in Baramati, is attributed to the expansive and safari-suitable nature of these grasslands.

According to Hindustan Times, Mayur Bothe, the assistant conservator of forests (ACF), emphasized the richness of fauna in these regions. Bothe also underscored the necessity of a strategic approach for the conservation of these grasslands, integrating increased human involvement and job creation. Recognizing the potential of tourism as a viable solution, the department, alongside a joint forest management committee and non-governmental conservation organizations, has empowered locals with training in management and tour guiding.

As per Hindustan Times, Mahadev Mohite, deputy conservator of forests, Pune Forest Division, envisions the future expansion of this initiative into broader areas within the Solapur and Pune districts. Historically, these reserve forest territories were susceptible to unlawful intrusions. Now, with organized tourism, the forest department aims to grant systematic access to both locals and nature enthusiasts, strengthening the bond between residents and the natural world.

10,000th Tata Safari rolls out of Pune factory

The Safari has a market share of 25.2% in its segment. It rivals the Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus.

Tata Motors celebrated a new production milestone as the 10,000th Safari rolled off the assembly line in Pune.

According to the company, the 100th Safari was produced in February this year and it took just four months to reach the 10,000 unit mark.

The Safari is a 7-seat version of the Harrier. It also comes in a 6-seat configuration offering separate captain seats for the second row.

The new Safari is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 170 BHP and 350 Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Tata claims that the Safari's current market share stands at 25.2% in its segment. As of Q1 FY2022, the Safari and the Harrier together command a 41.2% market share in the High SUV segment.
