We've sailed on Christmas Markets river cruises and are often asked about them. The holidays are such a wonderful time to be in Europe, which is arguably the Christmas capital of the world, given the December holiday celebrations.

But where do they take place, what months, and how much do they cost? What is a guest to expect when sailing on a Christmas Market cruise vs. a normal cruise?

European Christmas Markets River Cruises: What to Expect

Time of year.

River cruises in Europe during late fall and early winter specifically sail so guests can experience the famous Christmas Markets. Otherwise, it's too cold for most people to roam around cities for walking tours and such without the appeal of the holiday spirit.

All over Europe, from the end of November or the beginning of December, depending on the destination, cities have the most incredible traditional Christmas markets comprised of little kiosks, kids' rides, live music, and general merriment.

The Christmas market vendors are located in stalls or kiosks that are typically made of wood and decorated with Christmas lights, garlands, and assorted holiday icons. They're a true highlight and really give the markets their unique character.

Oftentimes times, they have even more ornamentation with holiday characters like elves and reindeer or Christmas trees topping the roof. The kiosks offer visitors gifts to purchase, like Christmas ornaments and nativity sets, candles, soaps, children's toys, decorations for your home, or presents like jewelry, hats and gloves, or home goods like customized wood cutting boards.

If there's an old town in any given city, 10 out of 10 times, there are Christmas Markets there. Often, there is demand for more locations and more vendors in a city, like in big cities, including Vienna, Budapest, Frankfurt, or Munich. If this is the case, there are typically additional vendors and stalls lined up along pedestrian streets near the old city center.

Hours of Operation for the Christmas Markets

The markets rarely open before 11:00 am. Typically, they are open until 9:00 or 10:00 pm.

Regarding what to expect during a typical river cruise day exploring a Christmas Markets town, we enjoyed having late mornings where we'd eat breakfast between 9:00 am and 9:45 am. Then we would casually read or do some work in the morning in our stateroom or somewhere on the ship. Afterward, we would have a light lunch, anticipating eating some snacks and drinks at the Christmas Markets in the afternoon, and then go to the markets in the early afternoon.

A walking tour of the town provided by your cruise line may dictate when you get off the ship to explore. But in terms of Christmas Market hours, since they don't open early in the morning anyway, this worked for us.

Sometimes we would return to the ship and then explore the markets again at night when they came alive with holiday lights and more people. The markets are definitely busier at night, no matter where you go.

Other times, we would time our afternoon and early evening, so we left the ship at an hour when we'd see the markets during daylight, and then the sun would set as we walked around. That way, we'd see daytime and nighttime lighting during one trip off the ship. If you leave the ship around 3:30 pm and you hang out on land for an hour and a half, it's dark by 5:00 pm!

Making multiple trips to town and coming back to the river cruise ship in between depends on how closely your ship is docked to the center of town and your mobility.

Christmas Markets End Before or Right Around Christmas

Many, many Christmas markets end the day before Christmas or two days before Christmas. This is true of Frankfurt, Mainz, and many other places.

If you're going on a river cruise during December because you want to experience the Christmas Markets, make sure that your cruise starts during the first two and a half weeks of December. Once you're into week three, markets start to close. Be sure you're not signed up for a cruise after December 24 unless you specifically want to spend New Year's Eve in Europe on a river cruise, and the Christmas markets aren't as important to you.

The Sun Sets Early During Winter in Europe

The sun sets before 5:00 pm, in the cities and countries you are likely visiting to experience the Christmas Market in Europe. This is a good thing to remember if you want to see the markets during the day versus at night.

Holiday Hours and Winter Season Affect Tourism Hours for Sightseeing

Going to a city like Koblenz in winter is different from going in summer. This is just one example we will use to illustrate that there's less to do in terms of sightseeing during winter in Europe than during late spring, summer, or fall.

During warmer seasons, the Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral Palace) on the Rhine River's western bank and the Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein fortress on the eastern bank are open during the day. However, during December and January, they are not open as usual.

The Kurfürstliches Schloss is closed, and the cable car that goes to the top of the hill to the fortress operates from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Once you're up there, you're only able to buy additional tickets to see a Christmas Lights display. Visitors are unable to tour the fortress otherwise. Another factor during winter is wind, which affects the cable car's operations.

Another example is wine tours in Rudesheim, which are popular during summer. During winter, the tours shut down.

Luckily we were able to see the exterior of the Kurfürstliches Schloss and practically had it to ourselves due to its lack of winter visitors. However, the point still stands: be aware that the main reason for the season is the Christmas Markets, and other sites are secondary.

Larger cities like Munich typically have museums and tours running as usual all year. Simply research the cities you're going to and what they will have or will not have open to plan your day aside from what the river cruise is providing.

Food to Try at Christmas Markets

Many times we were meandering through the market stalls we would say to each other, “This feels like a state fair with a ton of food options where you just eat and eat.” And there's a lot of truth to that!

There are certainly a lot of food options at every Christmas market you go to, no matter the city. Though the food was more regionally specific years ago, the markets have become more cross-cultural in terms of foods you can find in recent years.

For example, when we were at the Frankfurt Christmas Markets, which are one of the most visited and popular markets in the heart of Europe, we saw all kinds of food like Hungarian Langos, Mediterranean falafel sandwiches, German bratwurst and currywurst, and even Mexican tacos and nachos!

Vegan food is becoming more and more mainstream and we saw plenty of places to get a vegan bite to eat.

The most common food to expect to find, however, is different types of German sausages, French fries, crepes, cookies, and sweets for desserts like roasted chestnuts or candied almonds. We also saw spaetzle dishes, strudels, slow flame-cooked salmon in sandwiches (a personal favorite of mine and Dan's), and pretzels.

Drinks to Try at the German Christmas Markets

The number one drink to try is gluhwein, a warm mulled wine. Though you can certainly find other drinks at the markets, beer is less typically drunk at the markets. You can find different varieties of gluhwein, including white and rose. But our favorite is red, and when we've talked to other cruise passengers who have tried the other varieties, we all seem to agree red is the best.

Feuerzangenbowle is another popular drink, which takes gluhwein a step further. A rum-soaked sugar cube is served on the side of the drink and lit on fire for a true holiday spectacle in your hands.

Best Time to Book a Christmas Markets River Cruise

We recommend booking at least a year in advance if you want your choice of dates, stateroom, and itinerary. This is because these specialty cruises are in high demand and don't have many dates each year, so they fill up quickly.

Finding space on a holiday cruise closer to the date is possible, but as the date approaches, you simply have fewer options than if you book 12 months or more out.

Rivers You Can Sail to Experience the Christmas Markets

Though there are some outliers here and there, the main rivers you're looking at sailing for this type of cruise during the holiday season is the Danube River or the Rhine River. We have also been on parts of the Main River for a Christmas Market River cruise.

Yes! They're the perfect way to see multiple Christmas Markets in a short amount of time during the most festive season in places like Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. We love cruises because you unpack your luggage in your stateroom once and don't need to move or pack again until the cruise is over.

This perk is never as enticing as it is during the cold winter months in Europe! You get to come back to the cozy river cruise ship each evening after a fun day exploring Christmas markets to the comfort of the same room and additional comforts of the ship. It's a beautiful thing!

It's also nice not to have to figure out how to get from market to market because the cruise line has figured everything out for you. All you need to do is be a guest on the ship and get off and on the ship in each port as you like.

When Do Christmas Markets Cruises Start Each Year?

The cruises correspond to when some of Europe's most notable cities and towns start their annual Christmas markets. This is usually from mid to late November through December.

What is the Cost of a Christmas Market River Cruise?

Cost varies based on the cruise line and length of the river cruise. However, you can expect a Christmas Markets river cruise to start at around $2,500 per person and go up from there depending on the category of stateroom you choose for a 7-night and 8-day river cruise to see the Christmas markets.

We firmly believe that river cruises are the best value for the money because they include things like excursions/tours, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, and gratuities in most cases.

Which River Cruise Line Has the Best Christmas Market Stops?

Any river cruise line that stops in the following places is going to allow guests to experience some of the best Christmas Markets in Europe: Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Colmar, Vienna, Nuremberg, Budapest, Prague.

Truly they are so successful in Europe that most cities that have one no matter how big or small do a great job. Even small cities along the Danube River, like Passau where three rivers converge, have great holiday markets.

How Long is a Christmas Markets Cruise?

Cruisers typically embark on a seven-night cruise for this special itinerary. This is because the markets only run for so long during the most festive time of year. Another reason is that most people want to cruise within the first two weeks of December for a few days for market visits but they want to be home for the actual holiday.

Which Side of the Boat Should You Book for a Danube Christmas Market River Cruise?

It doesn't really matter what side of the boat you're on for a few reasons:

• Oftentimes, several boats dock up against each other, which means your view outside your stateroom windows is actually of another boat.
• If your boat is docked against the land, it's unlikely the Christmas market you're visiting is on the water. Rather, the holiday markets in European towns are usually in the old town city center. Though river cruises dock incredibly close to such areas, the main square of old towns is not on the water.
• The ship changes directions depending on where you start and end the cruise. For example, the ship's port side may be on the south side of the river if you're going on a Danube River cruise from Germany to Austria, but the reverse journey means the port side is facing north.

What to Pack for a European River Cruise during Winter

Pack for cold weather is the short answer! You definitely want to bring things like a warm winter coat, gloves, a hat and a scarf.

Our second tip for a Christmas Markets cruise is to bring hand warmers. You can simply buy them online at Amazon and keep one or two in your day pack at all times during the cruise so if it's really cold, you can activate one to get warmer.

We've been to Europe during winter when it's really cold and around the same time other years, and it's been more moderately cold. It depends on the year; such is the weather!

For footwear, we recommend boots of some sort of well-insulated sneakers or shoes. Dan wears suede or leather shoes he is comfortable walking a few miles in and I usually wear a leather bootie of some sort; Sorel boots are my go-to. Their styles are fashionable, well made so they'll last for years, and comfortable.

There is nothing better than Christmas markets in Europe. And I should know, I've attended dozens. The beautiful decor, the lights, the food, it's just magical. And one of the best ways to experience the Christmas Markets ? A river cruise!

If you've been looking for the ultimate Christmas adventure, look no further than a Christmas market river cruise with Avalon Waterways . Our luxury 7-day journey along the Rhine River was absolutely magical and something we won't ever forget. We were able to visit four countries in one trip, while staying aboard our beautiful ship – meaning no unpacking and packing at every stop – total win!

Our itinerary traversed across the most enchanting and best Christmas markets in Europe. Each village boasted handmade holiday decorations, plus an array of goods crafted by local artisans! During the day we'd get lost amidst alluring market stalls and when night fell, explore twinkling streetscapes enveloped with seasonal music concerts. Plus, there was plenty of culinary delights to sample throughout our travels—from regional fare to delectable mulled wine.

Throughout the trip, we were treated to gourmet meals featuring local cuisines, breathtaking panoramic views from the ship, and sightseeing opportunities galore. And best of all, Avalon Waterways took care of every detail so all we had to do was relax and enjoy the Christmas markets while sailing in style.

I've spent many Christmas seasons exploring the Christmas markets by taking the train and driving from place to place. But on a river cruise you're able to sit back and relax while you go from place to place. It's truly a one-of-kind way to venture Europe's Christmas markets.

Which Christmas Market River Cruise Did we Take?

Travel with me, christmas market itinerary, day 1 – arrive in basel, switzerland, day 2: breisach, germany and the black forest or colmar, day 3: strasbourg, france, day 4: mainz and heidelberg, day 5: rudesheim-rhine and koblenz, day 6: cologne, day 7: amsterdam, day 8: heading home, why take a river cruise, why visit the christmas markets, faq about a river cruise.

We opted for the Festive Rhine River cruise that goes from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The Rhine River is one of my favorites in Europe and after living in Germany for three years, I was impressed with this itinerary.

Starting in Basel, Switzerland we took a journey through some of the best cities and Christmas markets in Europe! We explored the fairytale town of Colmar and the Black Forest. Then on to the Capital of Christmas, Strasbourg! You’ll feel like you’re in a snow globe come to life. Next we took a tour of the castle in Heidelberg and drank Glühwein while shopping at the markets, culminating in the perfect night at the Mainz Christmas Market. We spent time in quaint Rüdesheim and then on to the twinkling lights of Koblenz. We visited the incredible markets of Cologne as well as the twin-spired cathedral. We ended our festive trip in Amsterdam, explored the canals, sampled cheese and stepped inside windmills.

I started my trip in Basel, Switzerland, on the Avalon Waterways ship , Tranquility II, our perfect, cozy oasis during the chilly winter. Stepping onto the ship was like entering a festive wonderland. The lobby showcased a glistening Christmas tree, while red balls and green garlands graced the interior railings. You could not help but get into the holiday spirit!

Depending on when you get in you have time to visit Basel's Christmas market, named one of the best Christmas markets in Europe!

Our first river port was Breisach, Germany. After a morning excursion to the the pretty town of Breisach, we had the option to visit the Black Forest for a wine tasting or to cross the border and visit Colmar, France. My husband went to the wine tasting, I went to Colmar. This is so perfect if different people in your group have different interests and something I love so much about a cruise – though sometimes it can be hard to decide which to pick!

Colmar, the picturesque French village, looks like a dream come true with its breathtaking Christmas illuminations, charming architecture and ebullient decorations. There are five festive markets here including one for kids and an indoor crafts market. My favorite thing to do is stroll the city and sample different Glühwein as I go. My favorite area is Petite Venice! A great spot for photos.

My husband Michael absolutely loved his time learning abut wine-making and enjoying delicious wine while in the beautiful Black Forest village. This is where your favorite fairy tales like Hanzel and Gretel come from!

THE capital of Christmas! Strasbourg is pure magic, with its picturesque canals, cobblestone streets and grand gothic Notre Dame Cathedral- once the tallest building in the world. This is the oldest Christmas market in France and it also boasts another world record – the largest Christmas tree! With 300 stalls and over-the-top decor, you can't go wrong in Strasbourg. This is one of my all time favorite Christmas markets !

Optional excursion? Obernai! This absolutely stunning Alsace town offers a wine tour excursion along with festive decor. This is one of our group's favorite stops!

You could do both Strasbourg and Obernai but I opted to stay in Strasbourg a bit longer.

We docked in Mainz and took the bus to one of my favorite towns in Germany: Heidelberg . I'm very biased, I lived here! You'll get a tour of the castle as well as see the World's Largest Barrel of wine! Then you'll have time to enjoy the best Glühwein of all. I love how the Christmas markets here are all down the main street (Hauptstrasse). This is also the perfect time to have an authentic German meal at restaurants like Vetter's or Kulturbrauerei.

We spent the evening at the Mainz Christmas market. A lovely market filled with lights and great shopping! Mainz Christmas market is on the squares surrounding the city's Cathedral of St. Martin. There are over 100 stalls in a magical atmosphere.

Rudesheim was such a surprising treat! We walked a short distance from the boat, through the pretty, winding alleyways up to the Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum to see and hear instruments from eras passed. We then enjoyed the lovely Christmas market and dined on potato soup in bread bowls – a departure from typical Christmas market food.

Then we cruised down the Rhine River while we ate lunch, passing incredible castles and hillside towns along the way. Our cruise director actually gave us interesting history and folklore along the way. What an incredible journey down the river!

We ended the evening at the gorgeous Koblenz Christmas Market. At the junction of the Rhine and Mosel Rivers, discover one of Germany’s oldest cities along the Rhine: Koblenz. As one of Europe's most enchanting Christmas markets, this winter wonderland is illuminated by twinkling lights that surround every corner of old town Koblenz.

Our last stop in Germany was the city of Cologne. In addition to exploring its iconic Cathedral, we were graced with one of Europe's grandest Christmas markets – seven distinctively different markets spread all over! It was truly a sight to behold and an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Cologne is renowned for its enchanting Heinzelmännchen of Köln, or Elves of Cologne, that adorn wooden booths, with handmade artwork and decorative pieces throughout the markets. For only €10 visitors can purchase a tram ticket to explore from one market to another. There's also an ice skating rink, an Angel market – where women dress up in angel costumes and ride horseback, and a pirate themed market. This is a great place to shop and try traditional German cuisine.

We started the day by taking a canal cruise to learn all about Amsterdam and its history. We had the option to visit the historic Zaanse Schans, which I highly recommend. Here, you can see how windmills are traditionally used, sample cheese, buy a pair of real wooden clogs, and have an understanding of the Dutch way of life!

After our visit to Zaanse Schans, we were back on board Avalon Waterways to enjoy our very last night on the ship. We enjoyed champagne at the captain's farewell toast and hugged all our new friends goodbye. We ventured into Amsterdam city center for one last night of fun and enjoyed the beautiful city lit up at night. Our cruise director told us the best places to go to make for a memorable night.

We ended with breakfast on the ship and headed back home from Amsterdam airport. You also have the option to stay longer and add on time to your trip!

River cruises are one of the best ways to explore Europe during Christmas time! You’ll have an amazing time as you wind your way down the Rhine, with breathtaking views and delicious meals. And don’t forget about all of those incredible Christmas markets in each city!

This is my true happy place. I simply cannot get enough of Europe's magical Christmas markets. Each one is a special experience with traditions, foods, and decor. Between the Glühwein, sparkling lights, and handmade decorations, these markets are like something out of a fairytale!

They can also sip on steaming mugs of glühwein and do as the locals do by collecting different mugs from each stall and town they visit.

Christmastime in Alsace and Germany

What?  Five days of festive fun from Frankfurt to Basel, via Strasbourg.

My wife and I have never been on a European river cruise but would like to plan one for our 25th anniversary in 2024.  Is there a best itinerary and cruise line that those of you with experience would recommend?  Thanks very much!

I can't attest to "best" but my husband and I enjoyed our first Danube Christmas Markets cruise with Uniworld so much that we did a second one. Sailing out of Budapest at night is magical (if you start elsewhere make sure to add some days in Budapest either pre or post, and do a nighttime dinner cruise). On one trip we headed to Bavaria and Salzburg after the cruise for several days, staying in Berchtesgaden (lovely small town and an easy/inexpensive/short bus ride to Salzburg). On the other, we headed to Prague with a stopover in Cesky Krumlov for lunch and a tour. I would go back to both Budapest and Prague in a heartbeat, and really enjoyed all of the stops on both cruises.

Thanks for the information.  I think, though, that you folks might want to update some of the information.  After spending an hour reading material on Uniworld vs. Crystal, I went to another site and found out that Crystal stopped sailing a year or two back.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I will remove the Crystal material when I get a chance.  However, the Crystal ships are back sailing under a new owner:   Riverside Luxury Cruises

But that doesn’t mean they will be comparable to Crystal, so I agree it is better to remove Crystal and wait for further information on Riverside.

We have done two Danube Christmas Market cruises (One Avalon, One Viking), and one Rhine Christmas Market cruise (Viking).  We loved them all but I think I would recommend the Danube for this itinerary.  I would definitely recommend one that includes Budapest, a fascinating city with great Christmas markets.  If you are interested in WW2, definitely include Nuremberg on your agenda.  Visit the documentation center and rally grounds.  Also, Nuremberg has one of the biggest Christmas markets!  Both of our Danube cruises were Nuremberg to Budapest, or the reverse.  If  you can, definitely add a couple of days on each end.  As someone else mentioned, be sure your departure date is actually after the markets open.  They vary from place to place.  The larger cities seem to open earlier with the smaller towns closer to the traditional first Sunday in Advent.  You can easily google the towns you will be visiting to check.  We like to travel right after Thanksgiving (Friday or Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend worked well, just avoid Sunday!)  Those early December departure dates also seem to be the most popular, so keep that in mind.  Be sure to pack light so you have room for all the treasures!  Happy to answer any questions if I can.

Yes! and tape!  I totally forgot that!  People on our last cruise thought I was brilliant and I had some to share.  And whatever space it takes up on the way over can be filled with beautiful Christmas market purchases on the way back!  Take some small scissors too

I have been trying to decide between the Danube and the Rhine for the Christmas market river cruise and was looking at one that sails Dec 22-29, but I read that some of the markets close right after Christmas. Also, being from south Florida, I wonder if it will be too cold for us?

Most of the Christmas markets close on the 23rd.  You can check individual markets for their dates as most have websites.  Of the 3 Christmas market cruises we have been on, 1 was very moderate, 1 was really cold and one was in-between.  Luck of the draw.  The biggest problem for us Floridians is we don't have the right clothes and are not inclined to spend a lot on clothes we will wear for a week.  Best advice is to layer.  If you have gloves and a hat (I didn't wear one much) and layer you will be fine.  You can warm up with some delicious gluwein!

Everything you need to know before booking a European river cruise

European river cruises offer year-round adventures, from autumn hues along the Douro River to Christmas markets in winter.

If you’re thinking of going on a European river cruise, here’s everything you need to know about your first river sailing, writes Tiana Templeman.

Choosing the right river

European river cruises are available year-round, from sailings that take in the autumn colours along the Douro River in Portugal to Christmas market cruises during winter, tulip cruises in the Netherlands in spring, and summer sailings along the Rhine, Danube and other popular rivers.

If you’re finding it hard to know where to start when it comes to choosing the best river for your first cruise, it can be helpful to think about what you enjoy most and choose your river cruise itinerary accordingly. For example, the Danube is widely regarded as one of the most scenic river sailings in Europe; or you could indulge your love of food and wine along the Seine in France.

Keep an open mind

No matter how carefully you choose your itinerary, there will almost certainly be a few things on it that don’t particularly interest you. But it pays to keep an open mind. As someone who’s never been interested in war history, the prospect of touring Normandy’s World War II sites didn’t thrill me. However, learning about what happened at Omaha Beach and walking through the thousands of crosses at the Normandy American Cemetery was one of the most poignant and memorable moments of my trip.

When to book

While it’s possible to cruise year-round in Europe, choose your sailing date with care, as itineraries that are early or late in the season may be impacted by high or low river levels. If this happens, you could end up being bussed between ports instead of sailing. While it’s impossible to accurately predict river levels in advance, a mid or shoulder-season sailing is more likely to be hassle-free.

Choosing your cabin

No matter what line you sail on, river cruise cabins tend to be smaller than those you’ll find on ocean-going ships. If having more room to move is important to you, you may want to book a slightly higher cabin category with a larger floor area.

If you’re travelling on a tight budget, opting for a cabin with a window instead of a balcony is an easy way to save money. While the panoramic views from the floor-to-ceiling windows in a river ship balcony cabin are lovely, you’ll probably spend most of your time out and about in port or chatting with other travellers.

What to pack

The standard of dress on river ships tends to be more relaxed, even when you’re sailing with the same cruise line. For example, on my Viking River sailing in Portugal, most of the gents wore polo shirts to dinner, but long-sleeved collared shirts and dressy slacks were the norm on my Viking Ocean cruise.

As river cruise itineraries can involve long days of touring, pack comfortable clothes you can layer, a pair of worn-in walking shoes that can handle cobblestones, and wet weather gear. If your ship has a plunge or spa pool on the top deck, don’t forget your swimmers.

Booking excursions

With so many excursions included in your river cruise fare, there’s no chance of getting bored on a river cruise. Work on your fitness before your trip so you can make the most of your days in port, and pre-book any “must-do” excursions as soon as bookings open as these can fill up fast. Also, don’t rule out the extra for-a-fee excursions, as these often cater to special interests.

It’s okay to go your own way

One important thing to understand about river cruising is you don’t have to do every activity just because it’s included in your programme. Opting out can be a great way to balance independence verus group interaction and have the kind of European holiday that’s right for you.

For example, if you’re an art lover and want to spend a full day exploring the Louvre, the ship’s one-hour walking tour will be a disappointment, no matter how great it is. Sometimes it’s smarter to book an independent tour or go as you please for the day.

Interacting with your guides

Your cruise director is an expert on your itinerary and the areas you’ll visit, so don’t be shy about asking questions when you’re aboard. Also, take advantage of the cruise tour guides in each destination. They’re local experts and the perfect people to ask where the best lunch spot is, how to find shops with locally-made souvenirs, or where to hang out with the locals.

Allow for some downtime

While it’s natural to want to take advantage of the included activities to get the best value from your river cruise, it can be a mistake to book up every minute of each day with excursions. Being able to spend time relaxing and soaking up the beauty of the river from the top deck is one of the joys of river cruising, whether you’re in port or sailing along one of Europe’s beautiful rivers.

There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

Which cruise lines do Mississippi River cruises?

After American Queen Voyages shut down in February, only two Mississippi River cruise lines currently remain in operation.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, American Cruise Lines (ACL) has a fleet of more than 20 American-built ships sailing across the country and remains family-owned and American-crewed. ACL offers a Mississippi River fleet of three luxurious 180-passenger modern riverboats– American Melody , American Symphony , and American Serenade —plus two classic paddlewheel ships, the 180-passenger American Splendor and the 150-passenger American Heritage.

The new kid on the Mississippi is the Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger, five-deck vessel that first set sail in September 2022. The cutting-edge cruise is Viking’s first foray in the US, adding to their fleet of more than 90 ocean, river, and expedition vessels navigating the world’s seven continents.

What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Viking offers complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines offers complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. Gratuities are also included in American Cruise Lines fares.

What is the best time of year to go on a river cruise?

Spring (late March through mid-June) and autumn (September through November) are the best times of year to go on a river cruise in the US. Spring blossoms add a colorful touch to the shoreline, and you can never go wrong with autumn foliage. The temperatures are mild, if not pleasantly cool, and passengers are eager to welcome a new spring travel season—or to enjoy one last autumn river adventure before winter arrives.

What month is best for a Mississippi River cruise?

If we had to pick just one, September is the best month for a Mississippi River cruise. The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.

22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

The 386-guest Viking Mississippi spans five decks, making it one of the largest passenger vessels on the Mississippi. Inaugurated in 2022, the ship features a modern Scandinavian design with an infinity pool and a two-story Explorers’ Lounge observation area similar to its ocean ships. Directly in front of the Explorer’s Lounge is an expanded outdoor seating area known as The Bow. Three restaurants serve both Southern regional cuisine and international favorites.

The cruise starts in Memphis on November 14 and includes stops in Rosedale, Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez in Mississippi as well as St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow in Louisiana, ending in New Orleans. Music is the main focus of this cruise offered by American Cruise Lines, which begins in Nashville on July 9 with an unforgettable visit to the legendary Grand Ole Opry and ends in Memphis, where passengers will enjoy live music on Beale Street and a tour of Elvis Presley’s Graceland . 23-day Complete Mississippi River Cruise: New Orleans to St. Paul

Sail 1,393 miles through 10 states on a comprehensive exploration of the mighty Mississippi on the new American Serenade . Inaugurated in 2023, the 91-cabin American Serenade won Best New River Cruise Ship of the Year 2023 by Cruise Critic , the first time an American ship has received this prestigious award.
