Maharashtra Wildlife Safari Tours
A Maharashtra wildlife safari tour will fulfil your longings for witnessing the biodiversity of Central India. The hot and humid climate of the region makes the jungles here grow dense. While roaming through the forests, you will see a huge range of creatures in terms of size, ways of life, sounds and colours. Such trips should be taken in the company of a guide or naturalist, who knows the jungle, and can educate you about the creatures. To make it easier for yourself, you may seek services of certain travel companies or accommodative properties, located near the protected areas.
Locations for Wildlife Safari in Maharashtra
Maharashtra has a high density of territories, protected to aid the survival of animals, and to help the government in their conservation. There are a total of 46 biodiversity hotspots in the state, of which 40 are wildlife sanctuaries and the rest are national parks. The national parks have been named as Chandoli, Sanjay Gandhi, Navegaon, Pench, Gugamal and Tadoba.
1. Tadoba National Park
• Location: Tadoba National Park, also known as Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, is located in the Chandrapur district, and lies in the eastern part of the state.
• History: The British were the first to notify the region as protected, by banning hunting here in 1935. Then, 20 years later in 1955, the Indian Government took control of it, and Tadoba National Park was formed. Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was created in 1985, and the two areas were merged into one in 1995.
• Terrain: Most of the land here is hilly, and the reserve is spread over the Chimur, Kolsa and Moharli Ranges. As a result, you will see numerous moderately-high peaks, valleys and ridges. These hills have elevations between 660 feet and 1150 feet above sea level. Irani reservoir, Kolsa Lake and the Andhari River are the primary water resources for the creatures of the area.
• Flora: The hills along the western and northern boundaries of the reserve are densely forested. Tropical dry broadleaved jungles of South India cover a major chunk of the forested area, with teak as the dominant species. Crape myrtle, tendu, haldu, crocodile bark and bamboo are some other trees of the territory. The wide open sections here are covered by numerous species of tall grasses.
• Fauna: Tigers, wild dogs, hyenas, leopards, sloth bears, nilgai and gaurs are the main carnivorous mammals that you should try to sight here. Birds found here include eagles, woodpeckers, thrushes and buzzards while marsh crocodiles and numerous types of snakes make up the reptile population of the reserve.
• Season: Safaris in Tadoba are best enjoyed in the winter season, which lasts from October to February.
2. Satpura National Park
Another great site for a Maharashtra wildlife safari tour is Satpura National Park.
• Location: Satpura National Park is located in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, on its state border with Maharashtra.
• History: The Gonds were the original settlers in the region, and they were later overrun by the Rajputs. In 1861, the British founded the forest department, and set the tone for the protection of the region. The government of India formally made it a national park in 1981.
• Terrain: Much of the region lies in the Satpura Range, from where the establishment gets its name. As a result, hills, ravines, gorges, waterfalls, ridges and valleys are plentiful here. The altitude here ranges from 951 feet to 4500 feet at its highest point, which is the summit of Mount Dhoopgarh.
• Flora: Over 1300 kinds of plants and trees grow in the tropical moist and dry deciduous forests of the region. Tendu, mahua, sal, teak and stone apple are the most easily distinguishable trees here. Apart from these, the region also contains a dense growth of bamboo and other grasses.
• Fauna: Though the area is famous for its tigers, numerous other animals also live here, and you should try to spot as many of them as possible. Gaurs, wolves, four-horned antelopes, wild dogs, sloth bears, langurs, giant squirrels, owls, woodpeckers and wild boars are some other prominent animals of the national park.
• Season: For the best wildlife spotting experience, come here between the months of January and June.
About Indian Wildlife
ndia is home to some of the largest species of animals, namely elephants among mammals, gaurs among bovine, king cobras among snakes, and lammergeiers among vultures. However, the most famous animal to be found in the country is the tiger, which is a cultural icon.
Conservation
Both the above-mentioned protected areas were established for the conservation of tigers, and can be visited during a Maharashtra wildlife safari tour.

Exclusive Tiger Safaris in India
On trails that resonate his roar...
At Tiger Safari India it is our endeavor to provide you with the best tiger safari holidays in India that have learning, adventure, and unlimited memories. We encourage you to store your experiences in form of videos and still photos which you will fondly go over at a later stage in life with friends, families, and your future generations.
While it is easy to capture people, landscapes, and monuments, capturing wildlife involves certain dynamics. The wildlife documentaries by channels are made with painstaking efforts covering months of filming in unhostile terrain, expensive equipment, special permissions from the authorities, weeks of post-production, and a great deal of resources. The end result is a dream setup. But this is not what you always see when you are on a tiger safari .
The videos below are shot by our team during a safari using a regular video camera, in a regular safari vehicle, no tripods, no extra permissions, and importantly during a 3-night stay in a national park. This is how you see tigers during a wildlife safari .

You can now take a flamingo safari in Mumbai
By Sanjana Subramanian
Bird lovers, grab those binoculars, slather the sunscreen and book yourself a seat on India's first flamingo safari. The tour will take you across 1,690 hectares of mangroves and mudlfats between Vashi and Airoli creeks, a protected sanctuary for the flamingos, who fly in from Kutch for about five months each year.
The flamingo safari starts at the Coastal Marine Biodiversity Centre in Airoli, near Thane. The hour-long tour takes you around 10km of the mangroves along Mumbai's eastern seaboard all the way up to Vashi and back. Each boat seats 24 people, with provisions for a smaller eight-seater speed boat to navigate through the less-navigable parts. The timings are subject to the tide (see ticketing details below).
Why is this special? So far, you could view the birds from a distance from viewpoints at Sewri and Uran. The flamingo safari will take you up and close to these pink beauties, N Vasudevan, additional principal chief conservator of forests, State Mangrove Cell told CNT.
The guides for this safari have been trained by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). If you're up for it, you can pick up a book Birds of Thane Creek from the souvenir store and flip through it.
For the large boat: Rs300 per head on weekdays; Rs 400 on weekends. If you're a group of seven, book their seven-seater for Rs5,000. For bookings, contact the Coastal Marine Biodiversity Centre at +91-9987673737.

Set on the northwest coast of India, Mumbai (Bombay) is a vast and sprawling metropolis, long-since expanded beyond the limits of the grand British colonial port and now an incredible, cosmopolitan, glorious and shocking concentration of humanity. A challenging but truly fascinating place to explore. A major base for luxury trains.

Mumbai is located on the northwest coast of India, roughly 1200km (750 miles) south of Delhi and 400km (250 miles) north of Goa.
Known up to 1995 as Bombay, the modern city of Mumbai is the largest in India (roughly equally with Delhi) and the seventh largest city in the world, with a population of around 20 million people.
The city is set on a cluster of seven islands and the surrounding mainland, centred around a large natural harbour.
The history of Mumbai goes back thousands of years, it being one of several ports along this coastline which linked the inland kingdoms of Rajasthan and Central India to trade throughout the Indian Ocean.
In 1534, under threat of invasion by the Mughals, local leaders signed a treaty with the Portuguese, who increasingly took control of the coast. In 1661, the marriage of King Charles II to Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza saw control of the islands pass to the British crown, who subsequently leased them to the English East India Company in 1668.
A major land reclamation and redevelopment project in the 1840s saw Bombay emerge as a major trading port, followed by the construction of some truly impressive colonial edifices.
Bombay was one of the epicentres of the independence movement in the 1940s and has since grown into an extraordinary economic powerhouse, accounting for 25% of the total industrial output and 70% of maritime trade in India.
Modern Mumbai is a vast and frantic place, an incredible hive of human activity. It is a place of huge contrasts, from the graceful architecture grandeur of the colonial centre, to the incredible wealth of the financial centres, to the desperate poverty of the endless slums, all sharing the same interminable traffic gridlock.
This cosmopolitan metropolis is also home to the famous Bollywood film industry and it is sometimes possible to visit the sets to see a movie being shot.
Many international visitors are obliged to transit through the international airport at Mumbai and most find a reason to stay for at least a couple of nights, in order to explore this remarkable city.
Places of interest
Mumbai contains a wealth of historic buildings, interesting temples and cultural centres. Here's a few notes on the best known locations ...
British Colonial Bombay
Within the walls of Fort St George, at the southern end of the peninsular, the British built a magnificent colonial city, filled with superb examples of Gothic revival, neo-classical and Indo-Saracenic styles.
A guided walk around this area is highly recommended, with highlights including the Gateway of India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji (Victoria) Railway Terminus, the Municipal Corporation Building, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince Of Wales) Museum, the High Court, the University of Mumbai and the Taj Mahal Hotel.
There are also some modestly impressive Art Deco buildings in the area around Marine Drive, including the Eros and Regal cinemas.

Mumbai contains some of the most impressive museums and galleries in the country, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales) Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art.
Markets and slums
If you want to experience the incredible human concentrations of Mumbai, then you may consider a guided tour to one of the remarkable markets or extensive slum areas.
The enormous fish market and the attractive flower market are of particular interest.
The Dharavi slum, which famously featured in the Bollywood movie Slumdog Millionaire, is home to a remarkable one million people, all crammed together it’s really incredible. The place is smelly and dirty, but the people are remarkably good-natured and there is such a hive of small-scale industry taking place in every narrow alleyway. Tours are carried out by charitable organisations and you are encouraged to act with sensitivity and not to take photos.
Elephanta Island
The island of Elephanta lies in the main bay, around 10km east of the waterfront and contains an impressive labyrinth of cave temples, filled with religious sculptures, which are thought to date from around 650 AD.
A ferry operates from the city waterfront. Once on the island it is a short walk or a miniature train ride into the heart of the island and the caves.
With an incredible output of almost 1000 movies each year, Bollywood is an important part of Mumbai culture.
Two of the most prolific studios, Sankraman and Balaji, open their doors to visitors and, depending on the filming schedule, you may get to actually witness the filming of scenes or go behind the scenes to the dress and make-up departments.
Seasonality
The best time of year to visit the Mumbai area is generally considered to be during Oct-May, although there are considerable climatic variations over that period.
October is the transition period between the end of the monsoon rains and the start of the cool dry season.
During October the daytime temperatures usually rise to around 33C/91F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures hold up around 23C/73F. However the rainfall is much lower, dropping to around 75mm (3”) during the month. Sunshine is around 8 hours per day (around 70% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are quite often clear.
October usually hosts the glamourous Mumbai International Film Festival.
Nov-Feb is the main cool dry season.
During Nov-Feb the daytime temperatures usually rise to around 31C/88F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures plunge to around 18C/64F. Rainfall remains quite low, at around 25mm (1”) per month. Sunshine is around 9 hours per day (around 80% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are usually clear.
The Elephanta Festival takes place in February, with classical music and dancing taking place in front of the Gateway of India.
Mar-May is the hot season, the often uncomfortable build-up to the main monsoon.
During Mar-May the daytime temperatures can climb steeply to around 33C/91F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures are up around 24C/75F. Rainfall remains low, increasing from almost nothing in March to around 25mm (1”) in May. Sunshine is around 9 hours per day (around 85% of daylight hours), indicating that showers tend to be occasional, set against a usually clear sky.
Jun-Sep is the main monsoon season and is generally considered to be the least favourable time to visit
During Jun-Sep the daytime temperatures drop off slightly to around 30C/86F, whilst the nighttime low temperatures remain up at a stifling 25C/71F. Rainfall climbs to an extremely high 550mm (22”) per month. Sunshine drops to around 3 hours per day (around 25% of daylight hours), meaning that skies are very often heavily overcast.
Late August or early September witnesses the ten day Ganesh Chaturthi Festival, with various ceremonies and celebrations, reaching a crescendo with a major parade.

UMRED Karhandla Wildlife, Img Credits
Umred Karhandla Sanctuary is about 58 km from Nagpur and 60 km from Bhandara. This Sanctuary also has a connection with the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve through the forest along the Wainganga River.
It is home to resident breeding tigers, herds of Gaur, wild dogs, and also rare animals like flying squirrels, pangolins, and honey badgers .
The sanctuary provides connectivity between key tiger reserves like Tadoba, Pench, Bor , and Nagzira. It thus also serves to reduce the pressure on tourists and tourism-related activities from those protected areas because they are more Eco-sensitive.
Over the last few years, the number of tourists is increasing. Tigers are very commonly seen here in many villages around the sanctuary.
About 100 km of motorable road has been developed out of which tourists are allowed on 44 km. The road can handle about 40 vehicles- 20 in the morning and 20 in the evening.
The Forest department has trained about 20 villagers from the nearby areas as guides which provides them employment. The main entrance of the sanctuary is at Karhandla village.
It is one of the most visited wildlife sanctuaries, after Pench in the Nagpur area.

Pench Tiger Reserve & National Park
Royal Bengal Tiger, Pench Tiger Reserve, Img Credit
Pench National Park or Pench Tiger Reserve is one of the premier tiger reserves of India and the only one to straddle across two states – Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
As per many experts, this area is considered one of the prime and critical tiger habitats remaining in central India.
It derives its name from its life line-the River Pench . Inside the park, the river flows from North to South before going on to join the Kanhan River.
This area was described as extremely rich and diverse in wildlife from the earliest records available on the 16th century Deogarh kingdom .
The scenic beauty and the floral and faunal diversity of the Central Indian Highlands have been well documented by the British since the late 17th century.
The fictional works of Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book , and The Second Jungle Book, are set in the region. Kipling himself never visited the area, instead basing his descriptions on other locations in India.
This estimate does not include the number of cubs present, which are assumed to be about 7-8. The estimation was conducted jointly by the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT) and Pench Tiger Foundation, spread over 21 days in January 2017.
There are six tourist entry gates at the reserve. Much like the system of wildlife tourism in most of India, the tourism activity in Pench Tiger Reserve is restricted to 20% of the core area and is carried out through safari drives done each day in the early morning and evening.
The number of jeeps that are allowed entry into the reserve is restricted by the Forest Department.
Best time to visit Pench Tiger Reserve
For best sighting, Pench can be visited from November to April every year. During May and June, the temperature is relatively high but it is the best time to spot a Bengal Tiger.
Pench National Park is one of the most famous parks to see a Tiger in Maharashtra.

The name “Nawegaon” comes from the word Nawe + gaon (Nawe means new in Marathi and Gaon means village). This area is also known as Nawegaon Bandh locally (bandh means dam in English) because of the presence of the water body. Mostly tribal people live here and this area was under Gond Kings in the old days.
Nawegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve was notified as the 46th tiger reserve of India on 12th December 2013.
It’s the 5th Tiger Reserve of Maharashtra . It is situated in Gondia and Bhandara Districts in the North-Eastern corner of Maharashtra.
Strategically the Tiger Reserve is located in the heart of the central Indian Tiger landscape which contributes almost 1/6 of the total tiger population of the country.
This area is an excellent abode for almost all major floral and faunal species found in central India. Apart from tigers, other animals like Panther, Palm Civet, Jackals, Bisons, Sambars, Nilgais, Chitals, Wild boars, and Sloth Bears can also be seen.
The sanctuary also serves as a living repository of various economic, medicinal, aromatic, and ornamental plant species.
The tiger reserve is open to tourists throughout the year, with different timings depending on the season. Means of travel in the reserve and different forms of accommodation are available for visitors.
If you are lucky, you can witness many majestic big cats sprawling around in this undisturbed landscape.
Best time to visit Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve is from November to February every year.
