USS Yorktown Harbor Tour

One of the most predominate sites on our tour is the USS Yorktown (CV-10) . The Yorktown is located at Patriot’s Point In Mt. Pleasant just over the Ravenel bridge from downtown Charleston. Patriot’s Point is a museum of several ships including a Vietnam camp replica. For anyone that likes history, ships, old things or just likes to marvel at what humans can accomplish without the use of computers this is a must see while in Charleston.

CV-10 or Carrier Vessel is an Essex-class carrier that was built in 1941 and commissioned in 1943. CV-10 was originally named Bonhomme Richard it was renamed Yorktown during construction to commemorate CV-5, also named the Yorktown. CV-5 was sunk in 1942 during the Battle of Midway.

Yorktown (CV-5) prepares to get under way from NAS San Diego (June 1940)

CV-5 Yorktown was the lead ship of the Yorktown class. She was a straight deck carrier and was designed and built in 1943 in Newport News Virginia , after lessons learned in the Lexington class converted battlecruisers. She was launched in 1936 and after many sea trials, fitting out, and war exercises Yorktown headed to the Pacific fleet in 1939.

The US enters the war after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 killing over 2,400 Americans and sinking or damaging 16 ships and 250 aircraft. CV-6 was damaged during the battle of the Cora Sea and arrived back in Pearl Harbor for repairs in May. She was minimally repaired and ready to head to sea to meet up with the Pacific Fleet Northeast of Midway. During this time after attacking several Japanese ships a raid on the Yorktown insured. The Yorktown and its planes fought off much on the incoming attack but 3 planes were able to hit the Yorktown. Just hours later after they had controlled all the burning and got the boilers running again the radar picked up another attack. This time The Yorktown was not so lucky and was fatally wonded. She had lost all power and had a jammed rudder and was dead in the water with a list to the port side. The ship was abandoned and was hit again by Japanese subs during a salvage operation. By June 7,1942 the damage was to much for the Yorktown and rolled upside-down and sank.

The Yorktown CV-10 left Pearl Harbor on August 22,1943 for its first missions of the war just off Marcus Island . CV-10 also ran missions on Wake Island . Several months later it participated in it first major assault on the Gilbert Islands, Tarawa, Abemama and Makin. For the next year it participated in raids from Marianas to New Guinea and even on the main land Japan. In June it was making air strikes on Guam to prevent the Japanese from launching their planes. It then returned to Pearl Harbor for more air training operations.

In 1944 in January it left Pearl Harbor to assist in operation Flintlock, the invasion of the Marshall Islands. The York town the Lexington and the Cowpens began air strikes on the Maloelap Atoll at about 5:20 am the morning of January 29. It also struck Majuro and Kwajalein to soften up the target so the troops could make landfall on the 31 of January.

For the next several months Yorktown was part of many raids thought the Atolls including strikes on Truk, a Japanese anchorage and installations on Saipan . In April it joined General MacArthur’s assault on Jayapura and Wakde-Sarmi north of New Guinea. From there they moved back to Turk Lagoon for another 2 day raid. After they returned once again to Pearl Harbor for training operations in the Hawaiian Islands.

ship tour charleston sc

In June it headed back out to prepare for the invasion of Saipan and concentrated its efforts on the Japanese airfields airfields on Guam . During the battle of the Philippine Sea The Yorktown tock down 37 enemy planes and dropped 21 tons of bombs on the Guam airbase. Yorktown also laid strikes on the Japanese fleet and hit the Zuikaku although did not sink it. Also later conducted raids on Pagan Island and Iwo Jima.

On July 31 it arrived in the Puget Sound Navy Yard for a two month over haul and repairs. After it rejoined the fleet and conducted operations in the Philippines to support the Leyte Invasion. In December it helped in a rescue of three destroyers that sank in a typhoon .

In 1945 Yorktown rejoined Task Force 38 and was tasked with striking targets in Formosa and the Philippines. From there it moved on to the Japanese inner defenses. Yorktown spent time in Saigon and DaNang sinking 44 ships before moving on to Okinawa.

By March Yorktown was off Japan to start strikes on airfields on the mainland and was soon under attack by 2 bomber planes the first one was hit and crashed off the bow. The second went down several minutes later and no damage to the Yorktown was reported. But the end of March it was solely concentrating on its efforts in Okinawa and for 6 weeks ran support for the troops ashore.

ship tour charleston sc

In Mid July she was off the coast of Japan launching strikes on Tokyo. Much of July was spent in this area running raids, refusing and replenishing as well as attacking the navy base of Yokosuka and installations around the Kure navy base. Several typhoon were in the area that hindered operations instill about August.

By mid August peace negotiations were going on and Yorktown and the rest of the TF 58 held tight off the waters of Japan waiting for instructions. She headed just off of Honshu to provide coverage for the forces that were occupying Japan until the surrender on board the Battleship Missouri .

At the end of the war Yorktown went to San Francisco to unload passages from the war and, continued on to Hunters Point Navy Yard for minor repairs. Repairs complete she headed back out to Guam to pick up more soldiers to return home. She did this several time before heading to Washington State where she was placed in reserve and remained there for the end of the year. In January 1947 Yorktown was decommissioned and was part of the Pacific Reserve Fleet.

In 1952 she was reactivated by 1953 it was converted to an attack carrier (CVA) and was patrolling the West coast. In August it joined TF 77 in the Sea of Japan and by this time a armistice had been sign two months earlier and Yorktown conducted training missions in the area. Yorktown was used as the platform for the movie Jet Carrier an Academy Award nominated film.

After making a few more calls to Hong Kong and the Aachen Islands it returned home and was placed in reserve while still in commission and receiving extensive modifications in eluding an angled flight deck . At the end of modifications she was placed back in full commission and resumed normal operations along the West coast with the 7th Fleet.

ship tour charleston sc

In 1957 Yorktown’s home port was transferred to Long Beach California and reclassified as an antisubmarine warfare aircraft carrier.(ASW) More modifications were made at this time for the new CVS-10 classification in the Puget Sound Navy Shipyard. After renovations Yorktown resumed normal operations along the West coast until about November of that year when she did a tour of duty in the Western Pacific. During the deployment Yorktown qualified for the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal three times.

Yorktown once again entered the shipyard in January 1961 and returned to Long Beach at the end of January and resumed normal west coast operations until the end of July where it set back out for the Far East. This tour lasted until March of 1962 and went back to west coast operations.

In 1964-65 Yorktown was deployed for the Vietnam War in support of the American involvement in the crisis. Yorktown was a dominate force in the Vietnam conflict for 7 months supporting land based operations in the region.

in 1967 in went in for a 7 month overhaul and completed repairs in early October and resumed normal west coast operations till the end of 1967. In December it set out for its last touring the Western Pacific where it provided AWS and SAR support in the wake of the North Korean capture of Pueblo.

Yorktown was also the platform for the filming of the movie Tora! Tora! Tora!, the tale of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

In December 1968 she was one of the recovery ships for the Apollo 8 space module. in 1969 she rounded South America to meet up with the Atlantic Fleet and her new home port of Norfolk, Virginia.

Durning the early part of 1970 Yorktown was decommissioned in Philadelphia and berthed with the Atlantic reserve fleet. She was there almost three years before she was taken off the Navy list and in 1974 was donated to the Patriot’s Point Development Authority. Yorktown was towed from New Jersey to Charleston in 1975.

Yorktown still sits at Patriot’s Point today along side the USS Laffey a Cold war Submarine and a Vietnam base camp.

Patriots Point

Patriots Point is one of the largest museums of its kind in the world. The museum gives visitors the chance to tour the aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown, along with a destroyer ship and a submarine. Visitors can also visit the Vietnam Experience Exhibit and the Medal of Honor Museum. The USS Yorktown was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy.  The carrier was commissioned in 1943 and participated significantly in the Pacific offensive, which began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945. Yorktown received the Presidential Unit Citation, and earned 11 battle stars for service in World War II. The carrier was later used off Vietnam and recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule before being decommissioned in 1970.

Just about the entire ship is open to the public. Tour the huge flight deck and then sit in the captain’s chair. Pictures and exhibits give a true glimpse into what life was like on the ship. After the tour, e njoy a hot lunch in the aircraft carrier's C.P.O. mess hall or grab something at one of the two snack bars.  Expect to spend about 3-4 hours to see everything, and plan to do a lot of walking and climbing steep stairs.

I had read the reviews for Bulldog Tours, as well as researched the old jail, and was very excited to plan a tour. I was very disappointed with what the tour had to offer. While I'm not against 60% of the ticket cost being dedicated to jail upkeep/renovations, I personally would not recommend this tour with Bulldog Tours. If I return to Charleston for future tours of the Charleston area, I will definitely go with another tour company. Read more Written April 9, 2024

She knew so much and shared with our group in interesting ways that kept our attention. We all learned a lot and her tour was a great kickoff to our arrival in Charleston. She was so knowledgeable, not just about the various regional food specialties we sampled, but also about the history, the people, and the Southern culture that really added to the flavor of our experience. Her culinary background combined with her ability to bring history to life created such a lively, fun, and memorable “day date” for my husband and I. On our tour, we enjoyed brioche French toast bites w cream cheese frosting & praline sauce, followed by a biscuit with fried chicken, poached egg & creamy pork tasso gravy at Ruby Sunshine. Next, we had award-winning She-Crab bisque, fried green tomato & stone ground grits with tomato-bacon jam at 82 Queen, followed by a sampling of a variety of specialty Southern & Gulla-Geechee spices, pimento cheese, and iced tea at the Spice & Tea Exchange. We finished off our day with a pulled pork slider with cola glaze and crispy fried onions along with a sampling of Syrah & Pinot Grigio at Well Hung Vineyard tasting room. All in all, it was a fantastic experience. Thanks again, Faith! You are such a treasure! Read more Written April 7, 2024

Andrew, our guide, told how the jail operated in the early days, which was scary enough. But then he explained some methods of torture, execution & treatment of Union soldiers during the Civil War. He even had a 'live' iphone photo of an entity darting across the hall, which was freaky! Search for missing South Carolina cruise passenger complicated by jungle terrain as family demands US help

A once-hopeful search for a South Carolina man who went missing last week during a cruise excursion in Cozumel, Mexico, is dimming.

Edmond Bradley Solomon III's family, including his daughter and wife, have been using social media and physically scouring the island with several local law enforcement agencies, but promising leads have become dead ends and theories are running dry.

Solomon was last seen on April 3, when a Royal Caribbean cruise ship stopped in Cozumel, where he got off the ship, went to the bathroom and vanished, his family said.

"I am terrified that if I don’t post something our story will become irrelevant, and that the U.S. will forget about us," Solomon's daughter, Savannah Miller, wrote on Facebook. "I am trying to think of something to say to keep everyone updated, but I am feeling empty and discouraged and exhausted.

SOUTH CAROLINA MAN VANISHES FROM CRUISE AFTER GETTING OFF AT POPULAR PORT OF COZUMEL, MEXICO

"I thought I was already losing my dad to FTD (frontotemporal dementia), but being unable to physically locate him is 100x more traumatic than any degenerative disease."

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

Miller is referring to her dad's recent diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory.

Known as "Brad," the 66-year-old Charleston family patriarch was enjoying retired life after 20 years as a VA critical case nurse with his wife Mimi, who is also a nurse and a breast cancer survivor.

VICTIM'S CAUSE OF DEATH IN 40-YEAR-OLD COLD CASE CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES, CASE LED TO SUICIDE AND TORE FAMILY APART

They were on a cruise, stopped for an excursion to spend the day on Cozumel, a remote island off the coast of Mexico , when his family believes he wandered off after using the bathroom within minutes of getting off the ship.

His daughter and other family members quickly dropped everything and flew to the popular tourist spot to join Mimi and the search with local law enforcement.

After a week, Solomon is still missing, and the ups and downs from potentially hopeful tips that lead to nothing is wearing on the family's mental state.

"It angers me that everyone else’s lives are continuing, but we are stuck in this horrifying level of hell," Miller said. "If you are in America, please continue to kick and scream about us to catch media and U.S. government attention so that we can be allocated additional search and rescue resources.

"Empathy, selflessness, and the endless capacity to love are my dad’s most distinctive traits, and they are the ones that still linger despite his personality-stealing disease. If you know him, you know he would do this for you."

BRUTALLY VIOLENT MEXICAN CARTEL DRAINING AMERICANS' LIFE SAVINGS IN COMPLEX SCAM AS REVENUE RIVALS DRUG TRADE

Solomon's family and friends have been sharing missing posters with loving anecdotes about how "Brad" has helped them. Missing Persons of America, a Facebook group created by a military family, created its own missing person flyers in the U.S. to complement the official missing persons bulletin in Cozumel.

Miller continues to plead with people in the U.S. and Cozumel to "spread the word."

"We are begging you to share this on socials, so that we can increase awareness and gain more news coverage. The more people who are aware, the quicker we will find him," she said.

STUDENTS UNCOVER ‘BIBLE BELT STRANGLER’ AS SERIAL KILLER CULPRIT IN ‘REDHEAD MURDERS’

Local news outlet Conexión Urbana has been covering the search in Cozumel and shared photos with Fox News Digital.

"Since the manifestation of relatives themselves, authorities have set up a search operation that keeps up to date, which has sparked the interest of citizens and the American community on the island, who have joined the search efforts," Conexión Urbana reported in a translated Facebook post.

"The municipal Civil Protection authorities have expressed their total recognition to the solidarity of the community, however, urges the need that any civic action in this regard, should include the coordination and supervision of the authorities expert in the subject, in order to avoid endangering the safety of those in solidarity supporting these search efforts, especially groups seeking internship in the jungle or at risk areas on the island."

Miller told Fox News Digital they have been following local authorities' lead since they arrived on the island while coordinating their own public awareness campaign across social media platforms.

However, the toll it is taking is becoming overbearing.

AMERICANS, INCLUDING SOUTH CAROLINA COUPLE, STRANDED BY NORWEGIAN CRUISE SAVE ELDERLY PASSENGER, FAMILY SAYS: SHIP ‘LEFT HER TO DIE’

"I have asked those surrounding me in Cozumel not to keep me informed of specific search efforts, lead, or other information because it’s making me too anxious and upset. I don’t have the bandwidth or the energy anymore," Miller wrote on Facebook.

Conexión Urbana reported a large-scale search earlier this week that included flyovers and ground searches with a rescue dog named Lune "in the most difficult (areas) to access," which included jungles and the surrounding areas.

"My dad walks really fast, and he does not have eyeglasses on like he usually does," Miller said in a previous interview. "He will often nod his head down and focus on the ground while walking. The more anxious he is feeling, the quicker he goes."

He "generally has a calm or apathetic attitude, and will probably refuse help if offered, especially from a stranger," she said, which worries her and family that this trait, coupled with his fast-paced walk, makes him seem confident he knows where he is going.

"But he is not," Miller said. "He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would. Unfamiliar people or situations are intimidating to him. He does not know how to respond and will avoid."

She said everyone in Cozumel has been helpful and kind to her and her family.

In the U.S., family and friends set up a GoFundMe for the family.

"Between cancer and dementia, (Mimi and Solomon III) have been through so much in the last few years and yet Mimi still shows up every day to take care of others," the GoFundMe says. "Please help take care of Mimi and Brad."

Miller said anyone in Cozumel should send tips to the Cozumel police.

For anyone in the U.S., "we ask that they continue to share the story and sentiments about my dad if they know him to raise awareness and to stay positive."

U.S. man with dementia disappears after leaving his cruise ship in Mexico

A 66-year-old South Carolina man has been missing for several days after vanishing while on vacation in Mexico.

Edmond Bradley Solomon III, of Charleston, was last seen on April 3, after getting off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in Cozumel, Mexico, according to Fox News.

A few minutes after getting off the ship, he and his wife, Mimi, went to use the restrooms at the terminal. When his wife came out, he wasn’t waiting for her and wasn’t in the bathroom.

“That was the point that we knew he was lost,” Soloman’s daughter, Savannah Miller said to WCBD. “We know that no matter where he was he would have difficulty understanding what was going on and communicating his needs due to his dementia. I think everyone just immediately became so terrified for his safety.”

His family said he was recently diagnosed frontotemporal dementia , which affects a person’s behavior rather than their memory.

“He sometimes says odd things and behaves erratically — or oddly — because he’s just doing what he knows how to do,” Miller said to the news station. “He can’t process the same way you or I can.”

Solomon was last seen along the road of Isla de la Pasión in Cozumel on Wednesday evening. He was wearing a white T-shirt, grey shorts, and dark sunglasses, WCBD said.

Soloman was reported missing on April 3 and a search and rescue operation was launched that same day, the New York Post said. A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for the family’s travel expenses.

“I think the best thing that anyone can do is just spread the word,” Miller said to WCBD. Start yelling and screaming. Elevate it as much as possible so that there is awareness and so everyone on the island is looking for him.”

South Carolina man vanishes from cruise after getting off at popular port of Cozumel, Mexico

5 things you didn’t know about traveling on cruise ships

A beloved dad's family has sifted through false leads and hit dead ends over the last five days after Edmond Bradley Solomon III vanished.

The 66-year-old Charleston, South Carolina , family patriarch was last seen on April 3, when a Royal Caribbean cruise ship stopped in the popular tourist hot spot Cozumel, Mexico.

Minutes after getting off the ship, he went to the bathroom and disappeared, according to his family, who said he was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia , a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory.

"No major updates. Many false leads today," his daughter, Savannah Miller, said Monday morning from Mexico. "It is very distressing for us to have hope and then be let down."

Solomon was on a Royal Caribbean cruise with his wife, Mimi, when they stopped in Mexico, where they planned to spend the day.

He went to the bathroom around 1-1:30 p.m., minutes after they got off the ship.

"When my stepmom, Mimi, came out, he wasn’t there," Miller told WCBD-TV . "She thought he might still be in the bathroom, so she waited for him for a few minutes. He didn’t come out."

Solomon spent his life caring for others as a VA critical care nurse. He retired after 20 years, Miller told Fox News Digital, and his wife is also a nurse at a local VA hospital and a breast cancer survivor.

"Please, everyone, no matter where you are, continue to spread the word," Miller said. "We are begging you to share this on socials, so that we can increase awareness and gain more news coverage. The more people who are aware, the quicker we will find him."

Solomon's family is in Mexico looking for him. Miller provided an update on Facebook late Sunday, saying her dad's AirTag – "if he is still wearing it" – is only 33 feet from his wife's phone.

"My dad walks really fast, and he does not have eyeglasses on like he usually does," Miller said. "He will often nod his head down and focus on the ground while walking. The more anxious he is feeling, the quicker he goes."

Over the last few days, local police and the retired nurse's family have been scouring Cozumel, an island in the Caribbean off the coast of Mexico.

Miller said her family and police followed "several leads" to no avail. The most promising tip came at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, when someone thought they had seen him at a large grocery store.

However, she told Fox News Digital that police investigated the tip, but it did not lead to anything. "After three hours of driving and walking the surrounding areas, we were not able to find him," she said.

Solomon III's tendencies

Solomon "has a generally calm or apathetic attitude, and will probably refuse help if offered, especially from a stranger," Miller said.

She and her family are worried that this trait, coupled with his fast-paced walk, makes him look like he is heading somewhere "with conviction."

"But he is not," Miller said. "He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would. Unfamiliar people or situations are intimidating to him. He does not know how to respond and will avoid."

She said everyone in Cozumel has been helpful and kind to her and her family as they navigate through the stormy waters.

Family and friends set up a GoFundMe for the family.

Former nypd cop charged with murder for shooting unarmed man at south carolina chick-fil-a.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

An off-duty South Carolina officer who began his law enforcement career with the NYPD was charged with murder Wednesday after he allegedly shot and killed an unarmed man outside a Chick-fil-A.

Anthony DeLustro, a Summerville Police Department officer, is accused of jumping into the car of 39-year-old Michael O’Neal and fatally shooting him on March 20 as the victim was trying to flee following a dispute with the off-duty cop.

DeLustro, 64, tried to claim self-defense immediately following the deadly altercation, saying he feared for the community’s safety and his wife’s safety.

But eyewitness interviews and video evidence collected by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) show that the cop “did kill the victim with malice aforethought,” according to an affidavit provided by the state agency.

“A reasonable person could not have reasonably believed that the victim posed a threat of imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury to others because the victim was unarmed, walked away from the altercation and attempted to leave in his vehicle,” a senior special agent at SLED wrote in the affidavit.

Several witnesses told investigators that DeLustro was “the primary aggressor” and allegedly killed O’Neal as he attempted to leave after the pair got into a physical fight in the parking lot of the fast food joint, the document states.

It’s unclear what started the skirmish but both men got out of their cars and O’Neal asked the off-duty officer, “Do you want to do this?” multiple times, one witness told SLED.

DeLustro replied with a homophobic slur: “Come on, you f–king f—-t,” according to the witness.

The men then began a fistfight as bystanders tried to separate them. As they exchanged blows, DeLustro tried to use his Summerville police credentials and told O’Neal he was under arrest, according to the affidavit.

The cop’s department handgun fell from his holster onto the pavement during the tussle, the document states.

At some point, O’Neal — whose own father was an officer with Winston-Salem police for over 30 years — was done and said he wanted to leave, according to a witness. He retreated and returned to his vehicle to try to leave.

But DeLustro yelled that he would shoot him if he left and the cop’s wife tried to physically restrain O’Neal from leaving, according to a bystander who was holding back the cop.

DeLustro broke free from the bystander, scooped up his handgun from the pavement, and stepped into the passenger seat of O’Neal’s Hyundai Genesis armed with the gun.

Police tape around a white car

O’Neal shouted at him to get out of his car, but DeLustro stayed where he was with the passenger door open.

The victim then began to drive away and DeLustro allegedly fired a single shot from the passenger seat, striking O’Neal once and killing him before paramedics could arrive, the affidavit states.

The Summerville Police Department placed DeLustro — who was treated for minor injuries — on administrative leave following the shooting and handed the investigation over to SLED, according to WCSC .

Anthony DeLustro in officer uniform.

The cop admitted to SLED investigators that he never saw the victim with any weapon and that he never threatened to use any sort of weapon and he was trying to stop O’Neal from leaving, the document states.

The special agent said DeLustro re-engaged O’Neal with a deadly weapon after the fight ended in what was “reckless” behavior that gave O’Neal the right to act in self-defense, not the angry cop.

Summerville police fired DeLustro after he was charged with murder Wednesday, WCSC reported.

The department sympathized with both the victim’s and the alleged killer’s families in a statement online.

“This tragedy has devastated two families and we offer our deepest sympathies to both,” the statement posted to Facebook reads.

O’Neal’s cousin has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to support his parents to help with funeral expenses.

“We are all devastated at the untimely and violent death of our dear Michael–or Mike, Mikey, or O’Neal,” Amy Nail wrote in its description. “As of this writing, there are many unanswered questions, and Michael’s family is respectfully waiting for SLED to perform a thorough investigation, which takes time.”

Michael O'Neal smiles in a past photo

DeLustro started his career with the NYPD and has worked for various police, sheriff and campus security departments in South Carolina over the years.

He was an officer in the NYPD between 1980 and 2003 — during which time he faced three complaints of misconduct from the public, according to online records.

Two complaints were for the use of force. Both were dismissed as unfounded and unsubstantiated by the Civilian Complaint Review Board. An investigation into the third, for abuse of authority for an unnecessary traffic stop, was not completed, since DeLustro left the NYPD the same year to move to the Palmetto State.

His first job in the state was working security at Trident Technical College, where his employer said his “temper was noticeable,” though he rarely received a complaint from the public, according to a reference check obtained by WCSC.

SLED’s investigation remains ongoing.
