And that’s not the only way to work up a sweat! As evening falls on 29 October, the party gets started with SYNTHONY. Victory for Philipsen in Singapore’s Tour de France Criterium Showcase

Victory for Philipsen in Singapore’s Tour de France Criterium Showcase

In a thrilling finish, Jasper Philipsen from the Alpecin-Deceuninck team outpaced Mark Cavendish to secure first place in the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium. This 60km race, unfolding over a 3km city circuit, showcased Singapore’s iconic landmarks in a spectacle more celebratory than competitive.

The event, though an exhibition, witnessed relentless efforts from cycling legends. Notably, Tadej Pogačar, Peter Sagan, and Chris Froome from Israel-Premier Tech showcased their prowess, right from the outset. They engaged in riveting breaks and fiercely competed for intermediate sprints.

Peter Sagan, the proud owner of seven Škoda Green Jerseys from the Tour de France, clinched the points classification title. This comes after his recent retirement from road racing, hinting at his plans to venture into off-road competitions in the forthcoming year.

Tour de France Singapore Criterium

Post-race, Philipsen commented, “I’m still feeling good. It was only two weeks ago that I did my last race in Tour of Turkey and of course, it’s not an official race but maybe it counts as 20. The roads are really technical as always in a city centre circuit and the temperature was really hot here in Singapore, but my team did a great job to get back Tadej [Pogačar] in the final lap and we were happy we could still take him.”

The weekend in Singapore was abuzz with cycling activities. Leading up to the main event, there was a team time trial dominated by the UAE Team Emirates. Additionally, several fan-centric events, including amateur races and charity rides, amplified the festive atmosphere.

Highlighting some of the eventful moments, Chris Froome, the four-time Tour de France champion, briefly led with three others before UAE Team Emirates intervened. Later, a significant break featured Victor Lafay from Cofidis and Brandon Rivera from Ineos Grenadiers. This group was overtaken with 13km left. Subsequently, Vuelta a España champion Sepp Kuss from Jumbo-Visma, Pogačar, and Giulio Ciccone from Lidl-Trek took the lead.

Pogačar’s solo effort during the final laps was commendable, but he was eventually caught up. The climax saw Sagan assisting Cavendish in the last stretch. However, Philipsen’s final push proved unbeatable.

Philipsen’s achievement in Singapore adds to his already impressive tally for 2023, with 19 wins, including four from the Tour de France. His consistency and prowess have solidified his reputation as the premier sprinter of the year.

The highlight of the event will be the chance to see top cyclist Tadej Pogacar making his Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium debut. One of the sport’s top talents, having won the 2020 and 2021 Tour de France, the Slovenian will be headlining the 32-rider field on the new route.

He comes fresh from his epic battle in this year’s Tour de France where he finished second behind Jonas Vingegaard. His rivalry with the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France champion (also the winner of last year’s inaugural Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium) is widely regarded as one of keenest in cycling history.

Although second best in the Tour de France, the 24-year-old UAE Team Emirates has registered wins at the Vuelta a Andalucia, Ronde Van Vlaanderen, Amstel Gold Race and La Fleche Wallonne, among others, to be the runaway leader atop the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) rankings. He is more than 1,500 points ahead of second-placed Remco Evenepoel.

Last year’s inaugural Criterium saw the likes of four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome, joint record holder for the most Tour de France stage wins Mark Cavendish, and eventual winner Vingegaard.

Who else will we see at the race? Stay tuned for more updates!

But that’s not all. Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium isn’t just a spectator sport.

Amateur cyclists and enthusiasts will have an opportunity to participate in Prudential Singapore’s PRURide Seeker’s Criterium, the only event for non-professional cyclists to race on the same street circuit during the race weekend. Registration for PRURide Seeker’s Criterium will commence on Aug 1. More information can be found here .

There will also be concerts with international music acts, although details are yet to be finalised.

SINGAPORE — Singapore will become the first Southeast Asian country to host a Tour de France criterium event this October.

The Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium will take place on a specially designed street circuit in the heart of the city on Oct 29 and Oct 30, said the organisers in a news release on Tuesday (June 28).

It will feature 32 riders from eight of the world’s best professional cycling teams, including decorated British cyclist Mark Cavendish, who holds the joint record for the most Tour de France stage wins (34).

In the Tour de France, elite cyclists compete in a gruelling test as they cover an average of 3,500 kilometres over three weeks in their quest for glory.

Tour de France riders take to trishaws before Singapore criterium - Gallery

Riders enjoy end of season fun before Sunday’s exhibition race

Jonas Vingegaard, Mark Cavendish, Chris Froome, Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde went for a 'trishaw' ride on the eve of Sunday's Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium on Sunday, enjoying some end of season fun and games before the 64km downtown circuit race.

Earlier in the day Cavendish spoke to Cyclingnews about his 2022 season but stayed tight-lipped about his team for 2023 .

Vingegaard shared his thoughts on the 2023 Tour de France route and how he would have liked more time trials in the mountains route .

The five big-name riders are part of a 28-rider group of professional orders who will race against 16 Asian riders. Also in Singapore are Jasper Philipsen, who is part of a Legends Team alongside Cavendish, Tour de France stage winners Simon Clarke and Hugo Houle, polka-dot wearer Simon Geschke, Sepp Kuss and Rohan Dennis.

Nibali and Valverde have already officially retired but will ride in Singapore and in next week's similar Saitama Tour de France criterium in Japan.

Plans for a Tour de France criterium in Singapore were made three years ago but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the first edition. It has been organised by Australian company TEG Entertainment.

“The aim is to be able to spread the interest in competitive cycling more widely,” Brendon Bainbridge of TEG said.

“The Tour de France and its champions are naturally the best ambassadors for reaching the public. There is an increasing number of amateur cyclists in Singapore and the country has put plenty of effort into developing cycling as a sport.”

The riders took a spin around the Albert Centre and Chinatown areas of Singapore, on three-wheel rickshaws known as trishaws, taking over from the local guides and eating local fried snacks. For the record Mark Cavendish was the first back to the garage after the ride, ahead of Vingegaard, Valverde, Nibali and Froome. Elsewhere Houle took part in a local spinning class.

During the evening team presentation, riders also dressed up in local costumes and were given a drumming lesson on stage.

On Sunday the riders will compete on a downtown street circuit that starts and ends at the Float and Marina Bay and passes iconic Singapore landmarks including the Merlion and the Esplanade. The riders will cover some of the five-kilometre circuit used during the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix for a total of 20 laps and 64k of racing.

“I’m a big fan of Formula 1. I watch the Singapore Grand Prix on television, but I’ve also driven it on my PlayStation! It was the first thing I did when I found out that we would be riding here,” Cavendish said.

Like many of the riders, Vingegaard travelled to Singapore with his family after an end of season holiday in the Maldives. He will race the criterium in his Tour de France yellow jersey.

“It will feel really special to wear the yellow jersey again, it gives us the opportunity to bring some of the Tour de France atmosphere here,” he said.

Cycling: Singapore to host first Tour de France criterium race in South-east Asia

singapore tour de france criterium

SINGAPORE - The Tour de France brand is whizzing its way around the globe and Singapore will be the first South-east Asian country to host one of its post-tour criterium events.

The Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium will take place on Oct 29 and 30 on a specially designed street circuit in the heart of the city, in what is set to be another boost to Singapore’s sports tourism industry.

Decorated British cyclist Mark Cavendish, an Olympic silver medallist and four-time world champion who holds the joint record for the most Tour de France stage wins (34), spearheads 32 riders from eight of the world’s best professional cycling teams that will feature in the invitation-only race.

The event will add to the Republic’s burgeoning calendar of marquee sports events. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the Singapore Grand Prix would remain on the Formula One calendar until 2028, while Sport Singapore also announced a bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2025.

Mainstays on the calendar include golf’s SMBC Singapore Open and HSBC Women’s World Championship, as well as the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens.

This year, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, top-class football also returns with the visit of Liverpool and Crystal Palace for the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy.

The Tour de France is an annual men’s cycling race primarily held in France over 21 stages and 23 days, usually in July, and covers around 3,500km.

In comparison, its criteriums are shorter events that are also held in other countries like China and Japan. In these events, riders do a pre-determined number of laps or race for 30 to 90 minutes around a closed circuit. The length of each lap ranges from 800m to 10km.

Riders from each team will work together to set up their teammates for victory, and the race is won either through classification at the finish of the final lap or classification based on the number of laps covered and points obtained during the intermediate sprints.

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said Singapore was a “natural choice” because of its location, organisational capability and enthusiastic cycling community.

singapore tour de france criterium

The Singapore Criterium race weekend will comprise races for both professionals and amateurs and is expected to reach millions of viewers worldwide through a variety of international broadcasters.

CIMB private banking economist Song Seng Wun welcomed the initiative, saying: “Imagine the cameras taking viewers down Orchard Road or Marina Bay as the riders speed by – the event would be another layer to promote Singapore as a place to live, work or play via a different sport like cycling.

“The marketing value is difficult to ascertain, but cycling has become more popular during the pandemic and even non-cyclists would be aware of the Tour de France brand, so in terms of eyeballs, newsworthiness and branding, it’s easily worth millions to Singapore.”

While it is not immediately apparent how many foreign visitors will come for this event, Associate Professor Chang Tou Chuang of the National University of Singapore’s geography department and a tourism geographer, said it would still be positive for the Singapore brand.

He said: “Most immediately, participants and their families and entourages, as well as fans and international media will all spend a few days shopping, eating, and enjoying the sights and sounds of Singapore. But the lingering effect will remain.

“People who watch the event ‘live’ and those who read about it weeks later will have Singapore at the top of their mind. The event might also precipitate future sports and health and wellness-related events and meetings.”

After experiencing similar stops in Shanghai and Saitama, the Singapore Cycling Federation’s high performance director Shayne Bannan is thrilled by the chance to host the best riders in the world.

“The most obvious benefit is the education we will get in terms of what high-level racing is about,” he explained. “There will be opportunities for our cyclists and the fraternity to get involved in the cycling clinics, amateur races and community rides.”

The event is supported by the Singapore Tourism Board and promoted by TEG Sport in conjunction with Evoke EXP.

'High-speed criterium racing' returning to Greenville, Tour De France's Hincapie riding

Bike alongside Tour de France veterans at ONE City Plaza on April 25 as the Greenville Cycling Classic , presented by Prisma Health, will allow attendees to take a 20-minute ride alongside George Hincapie, Bobby Julich and Christian Vande Velde.

Beginning at 3 p.m., men's and women's professional and amateur cycling will occur along Main and Coffee Street. Bike races will continue through 9 p.m. to determine a winner in nine divisions, ranging from 30-minute rides to a 70-lap competition.

This race is part of the Speed Week race series, with nine races in South Carolina and Georgia.

"We're thrilled to bring high-speed criterium racing back to Greenville," Hincapie said. "This event will be a fantastic spring highlight for the entire community to enjoy."

Tour de France legends Julich, Vande Velde and Hincapie are offering the first 200 registered riders to a casual, one-kilometer speed criterium loop race that travels around downtown for 20 minutes beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Who is George Hincapie and the other Tour de France legends?

Hincapie is a former professional racing cyclist who competed alongside Lance Armstrong as his domestique or assisting rider on the U.S. PostalPro Cycling Team. He is also known for helping Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans to their first Tour de France victories in 2007 and 2011.

During Hincapie's 27-year professional cycling career, he won three U.S. Professional Road Race championships and finished second in the 2005 Paris-Roubaix, which still stands as the highest-placing American ranking for that specific race.

Mysteries of the 2024 NFL Draft, grading past first-round QBs | Zero Blitz

Jason Fitz and Frank Schwab join forces to get their final thoughts on the 2024 NFL Draft in before it all kicks off on Thursday night. The duo start with the Denver Broncos' new uniforms and Fitz' strong thoughts on Arena football. There's a lot of hype around the quarterbacks in this year's draft, but Fitz and Frank provide a reality check by grading every first-round quarterback selected between 2018 and 2022, assigning only 3 As and 7 Fs (and having a very real conversation around Justin Herbert's grade). There are still a few big question marks in this year's draft that will have big ramifications, so Fitz and Frank go detective mode and discuss what the Washington Commanders will do at 2, the New England Patriots at 3, whether or not Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix will make it past Denver, the Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders in the middle of the first round and if the Dallas Cowboys will make a move to address their biggest hole. The dynamic duo finish off the show by snake drafting the biggest draft busts of all time.
