Much of the appeal of European river cruises, especially as we emerge from the pandemic with pent-up travel demand, is the small size of the ships, casual atmosphere, and accessibility. Unlike oceangoing ships that carry as many as 5,000 passengers, most river cruise ships accommodate around 150 guests, for a more intimate experience. Balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-air viewing are features of most river cruise ships, and some offer pools, spas, fitness areas, and jogging tracks.

Guests are kept busy (if they wish to be) with daily shore excursions, and most cruises offer several options depending on interests and activity levels. Bikes and walking tours are available in most ports, or guests can choose a leisurely day in a comfortable lounge enjoying the passing scenery.

"River cruises offer opportunities to step ashore in fairy-tale towns and fabled cities. You can immerse yourself in contemporary culture and learn something about the history of the towns along the continent's greatest rivers," according to Ralph Grizzle of River Cruise Advisor . With a number of cruise companies and rivers to choose from, planning a river cruise can take some time. Consulting with a travel advisor is always a good idea, and there's plenty of information available online as well. These are the major companies offering the best European river cruises along with examples of their itineraries.

Perhaps the best known of the river cruise companies, Viking promotes their "longships," which include large suites and inviting verandas for outdoor dining. Guests enjoy Viking's destination-focused dining as well as the variety of staterooms and itineraries with a wide range of prices.

Viking's 10-day "Portugal's River of Gold '' begins in Lisbon with a walking tour through its ancient streets before heading to Porto, home of the country's traditional wine, to board the ship and begin the cruise along the Douro River. Guests can explore Baroque palaces, vineyards, and lush scenery along the way, arriving in the World Heritage city of Salamanca, Spain on day six. The itinerary includes visits to Portuguese villages in Pinhão and Régua to sample local foods and wines before returning to Porto.

AmaWaterways

Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2022, this family-owned and operated cruise company focuses on excellent food and wine, tasteful décor, stateroom views, and innovation in their luxurious fleet. Fares include fitness classes, shore excursions, and all dining on board, including The Chef's Table specialty restaurant. New ships debut each year, and the spacious AmaMagna , launched in 2019, is nearly twice the width of traditional European cruise ships.

Wine lovers will want to experience the seven-night "Taste of Bordeaux," with visits to iconic chateaux, timeless vineyards, and delicious wine tastings while cruising the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. Excursions include a tour of a medieval castle and tasting of Sauternes, a stop in Pauillac, gateway to the Medoc wine region, and a Saint-Emilion tour and tasting. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Adventures by Disney River Cruises

Partnering with AmaWaterways, Adventures by Disney offers cruises on the Seine, Rhine, and Danube Rivers, Disney style. Specially designed itineraries and Adventure Guides create experiences for parents, children, and teens, from active excursions to unique onboard activities. Adults-only dinners and wine tasting experiences along with teen programming, Disney movie nights, karaoke, trivia nights, and Junior Adventurer dinners provide entertainment for guests of all ages.

The eight-day Danube River Cruise starts in Budapest where excursions include a horse show at an equestrian park and a goulash-making competition for Adventurers. In Bratislava, Junior Adventurers can visit a petting zoo, and in the evening, there's family karaoke. CroisiEurope's seven-day "Hamburg to Berlin: Discover the Medieval Charms of Hanseatic Cities" cruise starts with guided tours of Hamburg and Lübeck, A UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a morning cruise, the ship will ride on the Scharnebeck twin ship lift, one of the highest in Europe, with a vertical lift of 125 feet. An optional visit to the Autostadt theme park, dedicated to German auto design, and an afternoon cruise fill day four. On day six, the ship returns to Cologne.

Lueftner Cruises

This Austrian family business dates back more than 40 years and offers European river cruises on its fleet of 16 AMADEUS ships. Five-star service, facilities, and cuisine are their hallmarks, and their ships feature wide panoramic windows and a spacious sun deck.

The eight-day "Saar and Moselle Fairytales" cruise boards in Cologne and cruises down the Rhine to the Moselle and its tributary, the Saar River. The ship passes the Mosel vineyards and docks in the medieval town of Cochem for a guided walking tour. The next day, guests can tour the town of Bernkastel-Kues and enjoy a wine tasting or hike to the ruins of a castle for a stunning view. After a morning tour of Saarburg, the ship cruises along the Saar River with panoramic views of its massive loop. Their Concerto River Ships, AmaVenita , AmaStella , and AmaReina , cruise on the Danube, Main, Rhine, and Douro Rivers with luxury accommodations and excursions. Apt charters the ships from AmaWaterways, but their itineraries and onboard programs are unique to Apt River Cruises. Apt's offerings include rail journeys, as well as small boat, yacht, and ocean cruises.

Their 15-day "Magnificent Europe" cruise begins in Amsterdam with a canal tour and cruises the Rhine, Main, and Danube Rivers before arriving in Budapest. The ship docks in Koblenz and takes a daytime cruise through the Rhine Gorge before landing in Miltenberg for a guided tour of the city. On day six, guests can choose a trip to Rothenburg or visit a family-owned farm for a home-cooked morning tea. The ship passes through the Main-Danube Canal that connects the Black Sea and the North Sea. This German company offers 30 years of experience on Europe's rivers, and has a fleet of 26 river ships in addition to the expedition ship World Voyager and oceangoing Vasco Da Gama . The company's "time to discover" philosophy focuses on intensive travel experiences, shore excursions, and varied culinary offerings.

The eight-day "Traveling on the Elbe and Havel" cruise covers Germany's north on rivers and canals aboard the Frederick Chopin . Starting in Berlin, the cruise continues to Potsdam for a guided walking tour. A guided tour takes guests through Autostadt Wolfsburg, a park dedicated to the history of the automobile. In Hamburg, there's a city tour and harbor cruise before the cruise continues to the Baltic resort, Laboe, and ends in Kiel.

Teeming River Cruises

Founded in 2017 with the goal of making European river cruises more economical and personalized, family-owned American company Teeming River Cruises developed a different river cruise model. Instead of pre-programmed group activities, guests create their own unique experiences with a complimentary city tour app for each destination. All-inclusive plans and group tours are not part of Teeming's itineraries.

Their cruise in northern Italy along the Po River, "From the Canals of Venice to Renaissance-infused Mantua," is a seven-day excursion starting in Venice where guests can discover St. Mark's Square and Doge's Palace. In partnership with CroisiEurope aboard the MS Michelangelo , the ship heads west to Vicenza and then on to Chioggia. Day four is spent in Verona, with its ancient amphitheater and Giusti Gardens. The next days are spent in Cremona and Mantua with disembarkation and a coach trip back to Venice.

Belmond - Afloat in France

Belmond has another way to cruise some of Europe's rivers — on luxury barges with private chefs and excursions like truffle hunting, hot air ballooning, canoeing, and wine tasting. Seven barges make up Afloat in France , each with its own style and size. The elegant barges cruise the waterways of Burgundy, Provence, Alsace, Champagne, Languedoc, and Franche-Comté from April to October.

On the Belmond Napoleon , guests cruise the River Saône past châteaux, rural river towns, and expansive vineyards. Stops at Montmerle, Mâcon, and Tournus offer opportunities for wine tasting and exploring a Benedictine abbey. River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

Travel Agents and Mileage/Point Programs

I'm curious to know how many of you use travel agents (a live person in an office somewhere, not online retailers) that actually help you with your mileage/point programs, whether helping you decipher how to use your miles/points, to actually helping you book with them. I was told by a travel agent once that they cannot help you book a flight if you plan on using your miles, that that was something you have to do direct with the carrier. With the restrictions/limitations that come with booking or upgrading with miles/points it seems this would be a great service to have.

Plod through the airlines' websites to find acceptable flights and you may find success.

KC we sometimes use a travel agent. If booking flights *only * through her, she has to charge a fee for her services. She has all our FF membership numbers and always enters them for any flights we do purchase through her. We've never booked a free flight through her, but she has told us she would help, but of course still has to charge a fee. But I would not expect her to be familiar enough with any program to advise on using points - I would already have to know what I wanted and when.

Haven't used a travel agent in years. For us, no need. For our cruises we do book direct through the cruises company representative simply because that it the more common way that it is done.

I was unaware that a travel agent would book ff miles. Occasionally because of some oddity we may use the airline's ff desk to book something but there is always a fee.

The last time I used a travel agent was in the '90's. If you would like to book a ticket with Delta, for instance, go onto their site, and search for a ticket. There will be the option to pay with money or miles. I like to click "Flexible dates" because it will show you a matrix with the variation in prices (or miles) to leave on each day within that week - possible to find the "sweet spot" for paying with miles. If you're using a major airline, save your money and just book on-line.

The travel agent probably gave you that answer because they get a commission on ticket prices.

I don't use an agent for personal travel anywhere or business travel in the US, but for European business travel I do use an agent based in Dresden and she is worth every penny. I don't know all her secrets but somehow she is able to get better deals than me on Lufthansa flights (something a US travel agent can't even come close to doing). She is also able to more likely get me a free upgrade on flights. Lastly, she is on top of any disruptions and quick to react to get me to my destination. For example during the pilot's strike last year she knew it was coming and held seats on several flights then shuffled me around to the flights that were not cancelled to get me to my destination.

And to get back to the original poster's question, she is wizard at getting flights using miles/point for my European colleagues with no charge since we are a corporate client.

Travel agents that provide this level of service are out there but they are rare. And for those that are wondering, sorry she only does corporate accounts (she doesn't' even have a website).

I always use a travel agent to book my flights to Europe, and she also takes care of my Aeroplan points. My points balance always gets credited after flights, so this doesn't seem to be a problem in my case.

I usually book shorter regional flights and car rentals on my own, always using the airlines websites (I never use Expedia, Priceline or other third parties).

We do use an agent for airline tickets -- even when using frequent flyer miles. It can be done regardless of what you were told. The small fee is worth it to us to be able to talk to the same, real, live person and let her handle the details. We also use an agent when booking cruises simply because it doesn't cost us anymore, and it helps to have someone who does it every day. Someone who knows how to handle all the little "snafus" that seem to always crop up. We'd much rather deal with someone we know than a nameless non person in the nether world of cyber space. And we never deal with any of the third party websites for the same reason. But, that is just our preference.

Suggest you talk to several agents and find one with whom you are comfortably. Preferably one who actually does it to earn a living as opposed to one who just does it as a sideline, hobby, or an excuse to get out of the house and away from the spouse and kids. A good one is worth their weight in gold, but a sorry one is only worth their weight in %&*$.

Road Trips From San Francisco | Things Do Half Moon Bay You’ll Love

There are so many things do Half Moon Bay and along the coastal highway, one of my favorite road trips from San Francisco, California.

Driving the San Francisco Peninsula Coast, I’m always amazed to find how quickly I leave the city behind for views of crashing ocean waves, crescent sand beaches and stunning bayfront shorelines.

Come along as we road trip down the California coast to Half Moon Bay.

One of My Favorite Road Trips From San Francisco

To start one of my favorite road trips from San Francisco, point your vehicle south. If you’re starting out near the Golden Gate Bridge or the Presidio, take State Route 1 (SR 1) south for a road tour through the city.

On the other hand, if you’re near the airport or the east side of San Francisco, take I-280 south to State Route 1 (SR 1) AKA California Highway 1. Go south.

It’s an easy-breezy ride high along the California Coast. You’ll be able to see for miles! If you have a moon roof, open it! If you’re driving a convertible, for heaven’s sake, put the top down.

This is what California is all about: sunshine, open roads and a salt mist in your hair!

In no time, you’ll dip down to Pacifica Esplanade Beach at sea level. Time to stretch your legs and sink your toes into the sand.

The Bay Area peninsula offers some unique road-trip destinations, and we’re headed to one: Half Moon Bay, a seaside town with attractive accommodations, local agriculture and restaurants that awe and inspire with innovative chefs making use of those peninsula Bay Area purveyors.

At our first stop in Pacifica, we’ll sample artisan bread, Roma-style pizza and coffee drinks.

But first, are there really 3.5 bakeries in this small SF Peninsula coastal town?

3.5 Bakeries in Pacifica, California, City of 37,099

For a beach town of only 37,099, there are a whopping three bakeries in Pacifica, plus a pie shop!

• Mazzetti’s Bakery, an Italian-American family-owned operation for almost 50 years
• Rosalind Bakery, handcrafted loaves, pizzas and pastries that bring people together
• Saltwater Bakery, where everything they bake is gluten and dairy-free

We visited Rosalind Bakery, where patrons Hang Loose in the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The bakery, named for founder Matthew Kosoy’s grandmother, is known for its outstanding sourdough breads. The most popular sourdough flavors, walnut rosemary, sesame rye and olive, sell well at the San Francisco Farmers Market. 

Roman-style pizza created with Point Reyes Toma Cheese is a local favorite at the Rosalind Bakery in Pacifica.

I feel like I have to go back to uncover why there are so many bakeries in Pacifica!

Now that we’ve had our morning pick-me-up, let’s continue south on California Highway 1.

Things Do Half Moon Bay: Farmer John's Pumpkin Farm

I recommend stopping at Farmer John’s Pumpkin Farm just before arriving at Half Moon Bay. It’s one of the best and most fun things do Half Moon Bay in the fall. 

We marveled at the Atlantic Giant, estimated to weigh in at 600 lbs/ 272 kilos. Last year’s winner was 2700 lbs / 1225 kilos.

Check their website for opening day sometime in early September. Farmer John’s Pumpkin Farm typically remains open through October 31.

So now, onto Half Moon Bay!

You could spend a whole week on this stretch of Highway 1, but we’ll outline the best Half Moon Bay things to do during a day trip.

I have to admit that lunch is high on THAT list, but first, here are a few things to do before lunch to whet your appetite. 

What To Do in Half Moon Bay?

High on your list of what to do in Half Moon Bay should be visiting the many beaches. At the beach, you could 

• walk along the shoreline
• go beachcombing
• go tide pooling
• play with your pooch
• or sit, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and breathing in the beneficial negative ions created by the surf.

Swimming is not recommended because of cold water temperatures (~50F / ~10C) and rip tides that can pull you out to sea.

Of course, besides the beach, there are plenty of things to do, such as shopping, playing golf, kayaking or enjoying lunch.

There’s that lunch again, but we’ll save the best for later! After we reveal more about what to do in Half Moon Bay Cal.

Enjoying the Beaches in Half Moon Bay California Tops the List

Of all the beaches in Half Moon Bay California, the best beach in Half Moon Bay CA depends on the type of beach you’re seeking.

Does it need to be dog-friendly so you can take your four-legged friend? Are you looking for big waves to watch surfers or go surfing? Do you or a member of your party have mobility issues?

With those sorts of requirements in mind, here are some options (from North to South) for your best beach in Half Moon Bay CA:

Gray Whale Cove State Beach – we saw whales near the shore from our vehicle as we drove by on Hwy 1.

Montara State Beach – pooch-friendly beach, but Fido must be leashed.

Mavericks Beach – a big-wave surf spot where waves can crest at over 25 ft / 8 m after strong winter storms. At low tide, visit the Half Moon Bay Tide Pools nearby.

Surfers Beach – consistent waves make this one of the best beaches in Half Moon Bay CA, for experienced and beginner surfers.

Half Moon Bay State Beach – four miles of wide sandy shoreline consisting of four beaches: Roosevelt, Dunes, Venice and Francis. Francis Beach has the reputation of being the best beach in Half Moon Bay CA for people with mobility issues. In addition to accessible parking and restrooms, Francis Beach has a beach wheelchair.

Popular Beach – one of the only Half Moon Bay beaches that allow horseback riding. Dogs are allowed on the sand, unlike most of the state-run beaches.

What To Do in Downtown Half Moon Bay

There is plenty to do in historic downtown Half Moon Bay.

We loved the free parking all along charming Main Street. On a day road trip from San Frencisco you can’t do it all, but here’s a quick list of what to do in downtown Half Moon Bay:

Enjoy Lunch at This Restaurant in Half Moon Bay California

One of the highlights of road trips from San Francisco is the opportunity to pause for lunch or dinner. Savor fresh seafood straight from the ocean, as well as fruits and vegetables picked from the farmlands you’re passing through.

On top of that, these culinary stops wouldn’t be complete without a taste of California’s renowned wines.

But which restaurant in Half Moon Bay to choose?

I’ll tell you, I can’t say enough about the fabulous food experience at Fattoria e Mare, the restaurant in Half Moon Bay California where we dined.

Our servers performed superbly, even more noteworthy since our group was large.

Over 20 of us food, wine and travel writers sat at long wooden tables pushed together, Northern European-style.

A blue water glass the color of the Pacific, a linen napkin in a similar nautical hue and crystal wine glasses dressed each place setting. 

Barterra Winery provided and poured the wines paired with our four-course luncheon.

Things Do Half Moon Bay: 4-Course Luncheon at This Half Moon Bay Italian Restaurant

Items from our four-course, family-style meal came straight from the Fattoria e Mare menu. So, although courses were plated especially for our group, you can find the dishes on the menu of this Half Moon Bay Italian restaurant.

Do note that some menu items change seasonally.

That’s because whenever possible, Executive Chef  Owner Pablo Estrada uses local organic ingredients. So, too, the chef and his team use the principles of sustainability to guide their practices.

First Course | Fattoria e Mare

Butternut Squash Chips with Paprika and Sea Salt Pumpkin Gnocchi Butternut Squash with Burrata and Pepitos

Pairing Wine: 2022 Vermentino (Lodi)

The Barterra pairing wine, a 2022 Vermentino from Lodi, crisp with delightful tartness, unfolded on my palate with layers of lemon zest and exotic tropical fruits.

It complimented the earthy pumpkin and squash and harmonized gracefully with the gnocchi. 

Now that our appetites were whetted, out came the second course of Italian-style pizza. The 24-hour dough fermentation tasted authentically Italian.

Second Course | Fattoria e Mare

Meat Lover’s Pizza with prosciutto, sausage, pepperoni, olives and arugula

Pairing Wine: 2020 Sojourn Red Blend (Lodi)

I’m not a big fan of ‘meat-lover’s pizzas, but I do love arugula on my pizza, so that’s what I chose.

Arugula reminds me of my cross-Italy pilgrimage because it grew next to many of the trails in southern Italy where I walked.

Of course, you could find arugula on pizza in Italy, too. Rucola is the Italian word for it, but on English menus in Southern Italy, it was translated to ‘rocket.’ That’s because that’s how it’s known in the UK.

The Barterra wine, the 2020 Sojourn Red Blend (Lodi), paired with this second course, was vinted of 48% Zinfandel, 43% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignane, and 3% Alicante.

Seafood Restaurant Half Moon Bay

“The seafood platter it Chef Pablo’s shining star,” said Molly Blaisdell. She should know, she’s the publicist for Fattoria e Mare, one of the best seafood restaurants in Half Moon Bay.

Fattoria e Mare means ‘farm and sea’ in Italian, BTW.

But I have to admit it is the only seafood restaurant Half Moon Bay I’ve visited!

The seafood platter serves two with ample portions of fish, mussels, clams, prawns, scallops, calamari, lemon and chili.

Our third course, the main, was fishless, however. Instead, we had the best pork chop that, dare I say? I’ve tasted in over 10 years.

Conclusion: Is It Worth Going to Half Moon Bay?

Half Moon Bay is always worth the day trip down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco. I still remember the first time I drove it back in the early 1980s.

In San Francisco for a business convention, I snuck away for an authentic California Coast experience: beaches, surfers and classic cars. The coastal drive through Pacifica to Half Moon Bay over forty years ago is still indelibly etched in my mind.

But I must admit that this recent road trip down the SF Peninsula was even more memorable. I can’t wait to go back and try a Half Moon Bay campground!

Q&A: Things To Do in Half Moon Bay

You should spend one to seven days at Half Moon Bay, depending on your interests and activity levels.

Surfers and hikers spend seven or more immersing themselves in the wonder of nature found at Half Moon Bay.

Families could comb the beaches and go tidepooling for two to five days. 

The best month to visit San Francisco is in late September or early October when the weather in most clear. It is notoriously foggy during summer months.

The best month for road trips to Half Moon Bay is April or May when weather is mild. You’ll also get those clear days in September and October. The warmest months are July through October. 

We visited in October and you can see from my photos how clear the skies were during that time of year.

The best way to do road trips from San Francisco is with a sporty convertible. The roads are twisty and fun to drive during midweek.

Another way to do fun road trips from San francisco is with a camper van. Since you can reserve campgrounds at many California State Parks, doing a road trip with a camping van is adventurous and easy!

Of course whatever vehicle you have makes for the most convenient road trips from San Francisco.

We recommend that for first-time road trips from San Francisco, you drive California Highway 1 to Half Moon Bay, like we did. Freeway driving is minimal along this route, and you get ocean views very soon after leaving the city.

Middle East latest: Iran 'displayed power' in attack on Israel, Supreme Leader claims - despite failure to hit targets

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has spoken for the first time since his country attacked Israel. It follows news of Palestinians being killed in Rafah and the West Bank, and the IDF launching strikes in Lebanon.

The balance between the right to protest and the rights of everyone else had been completely lost, a charity that protects British Jews from antisemitism has said. 

We have been reporting this weekend on a Met Police officer who was recorded preventing a Jewish man from crossing a road by a pro-Palestinian march because he is "openly Jewish".

The force has since apologised.

Responding to the incident in a statement on X, the Community Security Trust (CST) noted that since 7 October it had seen a "record increase in anti-Jewish hate crime against a backdrop of constant anti-Israel hate demonstrations".

It said CST was working with the police to protect the Jewish community but despite "all the good work" there had been "mistakes".

"This latest case fits that profile, with the context and detail lost in the heat of controversy. An individual officer tried to do the right thing but ended up making things worse in a very difficult moment," the charity said.

The broader question, the CST said, was "how much longer these costly and disruptive protests will be allowed to continue".

"It feels like any balance between the right to protest and the rights of everyone else had been completely lost, with extremists the only ones to benefit, Jews the first to suffer and the police often caught in the middle," it added.

The Israeli military says its soldiers shot two Palestinians who tried to attack them in the West Bank this morning. 

We reported earlier today the IDF claimed two Palestinians tried to stab and shoot its soldiers near the city of Hebron (see our 9.13am post). 

One was reported dead, but now the Palestinian health ministry says both have been killed.

The Israeli military said: "One of the terrorists attempted to stab IDF soldiers that were in the area, who responded with live fire and neutralised him." 

The force added: "At the same time, the other terrorist opened fire at the soldiers, who responded with live fire and neutralised him too."

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA, quoting local sources, said ambulance crews were prevented from reaching the two men.

Palestinian security sources told WAFA the two men, aged 18 and 19, died and that they were still unable to collect their bodies.

A Tory peer has called for the Gaza conflict to end "immediately" as he criticised Israel for an alleged attack on Rafah that killed at least 22 people.

Israel has been carrying out air raids on the southern Gazan city almost daily, with the latest round reportedly killing 17 children of the same extended family overnight (see our 1.46pm post).

Lord Ahmad, a minister at the foreign office, said on X: "Appalled by the Israeli strike on a residential apartment in the densely populated Rafah in Gaza, which resulted in more children being killed.  

"We must stop this fighting immediately and bring an end to this conflict."

It comes just one day after nine people were reportedly killed in another airstrike on the city, including six children, according to Palestinian authorities.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are seeking safety in Rafah, having fled attacks elsewhere in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF says it is unaware of any US sanctions against one of its battalions, after a report claimed Washington is planning such a step against a unit for alleged human rights violations in the West Bank (see our 8.14am post).

The military said that its Netzah Yehuda battalion - which is reportedly the target of potential sanctions - is an active combat unit that operates according to the "principles of international law".

"Following publications about sanctions against the battalion, the IDF is not aware of the issue," military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said. 

"If a decision is made on the matter it will be reviewed. 

"The IDF works and will continue to work to investigate any unusual event in a practical manner and according to law."

We reported this morning the Board of Deputies of British Jews has called for an urgent meeting with Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley, following an officer's handling of an antisemitism campaigner near a pro-Palestinian march (see our 10.14am post).

The group has now said it will meet with Sir Mark later this week, along with the Jewish Leadership Council and antisemitism charity CST.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism, whose chief executive Gideon Falter was the campaigner called "openly Jewish" by a police officer last weekend, has told Sky News it has not been invited to the meeting.

Mr Falter had earlier called for Sir Mark to resign, as did former home secretary Suella Braverman.

In a video of the incident, an officer appears to prevent Mr Falter from crossing the road and tells him: "You are quite openly Jewish. 

"This is a pro-Palestinian march. I am not accusing you of anything, but I am worried about the reaction to your presence."

A government source said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is "appalled" at what happened.

The Met Police has apologised.

The number of people killed in Israeli strikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah overnight has risen to 22, Palestinian health officials say.

One of the strikes killed 17 children and two women of the same extended family, according to hospital records. Earlier, these records showed 13 children of the same family had died (see our 10.38am post).

First responders are still searching the rubble, The Associated Press reports.

Another strike killed a married couple and their three-year-old child, according to the nearby Kuwaiti Hospital, which says the woman was pregnant and doctors managed to save the baby.

In response to Iran's unprecedented attack a little over a week ago when Iran fired at least 331 missiles at Israel, Israel launched its own retaliatory strike on Friday.

Although neither side has commented on the effectiveness or otherwise of the Israeli response, it was evidently of a significantly smaller scale than the Iranian barrage.

However, more details are now emerging about the impact of the Israeli strikes, which provide an insight into their intended objectives.

Israel's interest in Iran's High Value Targets (HVTs)

The Isfahan airbase is located near some of Iran's nuclear development sites, where more than 3,000 scientists work on Iran's nuclear programme.   

The base also forms a central core of Iran's military defensive capability. 

Satellite imagery shows one of several air defence sites which include a central radar - at the centre of the facility - and a number of missile launchers facing towards the anticipated threat and protected within berms to avoid a strike against one destroying others.

Such missile sites protect High Value Targets (HVT), and their priority is to detect, track and target incoming threats. 

Before Israel targeted a HVT it would need to degrade such defensive capability, and the immediate priority would be to take out the long-range radar - the eyes of the system - at the centre of the facility. 

Israel would target Iran's defensive missiles

Satellite imagery appears to show that the Israelis successfully destroyed the radar during their most recent wave of precision strikes, with large scorch marks around the area, as  seen in the New York Times .

With the radar destroyed, the Iranian missiles cannot find their target and are thus superfluous - later satellite imagery shows that the missiles were no longer in their berms and were probably hidden away to protect them from further strikes.

So why is this important?

Iran launched a massive wave of attacks against Israel a week ago, but with very limited effect. 

In response, Israel was able to punch holes in critical Iranian air defence systems, thus demonstrating clearly that all Iran's HVTs are vulnerable to Israeli attack.

Although neither Israel nor Iran has publicised the impact of the Israelis strikes, the surgical nature of the Israeli attack demonstrated clearly Israel's military dominance.

A message that will not have been lost on its intended recipient - the Iranian political leadership.

New images taken on Sunday show the aftermath of the Israeli raid at Nur Shams, in the occupied West Bank.

We reported earlier that Palestinian authorities say at least 14 people have been killed in the raid, which began on Friday and continued into yesterday (see 7.53am post).

Israel's military said a number of militants were killed or arrested during the raid, with at least four soldiers wounded in exchanges of fire.

Israel is summoning ambassadors from six countries today after each voted in favour of recognising a Palestinian state at the UN earlier this week.

Japan, France, South Korea, Malta, Slovenia and Ecuador supported a motion at the UN Security Council on Thursday, but the US vetoed the move.

Spokesperson for Israel's foreign ministry Oren Marmorstein said their ambassadors to the country will receive a "strong protest" today.

"The unambiguous message that will be delivered to the ambassadors: A political gesture to the Palestinians and a call to recognise a Palestinian state - six months after the 7 October massacre - is a prize for terrorism," he said.

"Israel will not agree to the establishment of a terror state that will endanger its citizens."

He added those countries should instead focus on pressuring Hamas to release the remaining hostages taken during attacks on Israel on 7 October.

An "identical protest" will be made to other countries who supported the move, he said.

The UK and Switzerland abstained from voting in the 15-member council, while Russia, China, Algeria, Sierra Leone, Mozambique and Guyana also supported the motion.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said Iran showed its power during its attack on Israel - and that the key issue is not how many targets were hit.

Iran's official news agency has reported he thanked the country's armed forces for their 13 April operation against Israel. 

The agency adds he called upon the military to "ceaselessly pursue military innovation and learn the enemy's tactics".

He also played down the importance of how many missiles were launched or hit their target in the attack on Israel.

"How many missiles were launched and how many of them hit their target is not the primary question, what really matters is that Iran demonstrated its will-power during that operation," Khamenei said.

The vast majority of missiles launched by Iran were intercepted by Israeli air defence systems, with help from the US and the UK, as well as neighbouring Arab countries like Jordan.
