Visiting the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville: America’s Oldest Brewery

The bottling line at Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, PA.

This is a guest post brought to you by Lance from TravelAddicts.net .

Among beer aficionados, Yuengling Brewery occupies a special place: it is America’s Oldest Brewery. They have been brewing continuously since 1829 – even through the American Prohibition (they produced medicinal porters).

Yuengling also serves a growing regional area – only 21 states. That kind of selective distribution brings with it an air of exclusivity and a tremendous desire to see what the fuss is about. And Yuengling is most definitely worth the fuss.

Coming up Mahantongo Street from downtown Pottsville, you happen on the two idyllic brick buildings housing Yuengling Brewery.

If you have toured large breweries, you begin to wonder, is this it? It’s cute, but it’s also really small. There’s no visitor center. There’s no security office. There isn’t even a parking lot (it’s all street parking; $0.25 per hour). What there is: the most authentic brewery we’ve ever seen.

As you walk into the brewery, you enter through one of the production rooms and follow the signs to the gift shop. The free tours leave from here either twice a day (weekdays) or three times per day (weekends). Specific tour times are noted on the brewery website and include a special summer schedule.

The tour length is approximately 75 minutes, which includes a tasting of two beverages (a non-alcoholic option is available for those who don’t want to imbibe).

Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania: America's Oldest Brewery.

The tour takes you into the brewhouse where they explain the Yuengling beer-making process. You will also see the bottling process in a second building.

That’s all interesting, but the highlight of the tour is the underground cave where Yuengling used to store their beer. It is carved several hundred feet back into the mountain. It is wet and cold and perfect for aging beer. During Prohibition, the Feds were concerned about bootlegging and walled off the cave with bricks – a small portion of the original wall still remains.

After our tour, our fantastic tour guide, Vickie, offered us samples of the brews. The brewery maintains a modest gift shop selling T-shirts and barware, but you can also purchase reproductions of their classic advertising through the years.

The walls of the gift shop also display artifacts from the company history. And if you are quiet and there at the right time of day, turn your head up to the ceiling and listen to the grain flowing the black pipes on its way to becoming beer.

If you’ve visited other breweries , we can assure you you’ve never visited one quite like the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

We visited way back in 1989. Unless memory is not serving me well, were there at one time muraled walls somewhere? Also is Fritz still around?

Yuengling now has a 2nd brewery in Tampa, FL. (previously Bud/Bush and Schlitz). It’s quite a popular beer here as well, but I suspect a lot is shipped north.

Fantastic Tour and Experience

Our visit to Yuengling brewery was fantastic. We took the free tour and our guide was excellent. Stepping into the brewery and the tunnels is like stepping way back in history. The brewery is the oldest brewery in the U.S, and if only the walls could talk, you wonder what they would say. We walked through the tunnels, saw the bottling area, and the upper floor. It was well worth the time. Mr. B was in heaven. I will say, there are lots of stairs to climb so if you have mobility issues, it could be a problem. We didn't see an elevator, so I would ask before taking the tour. The gift store is large and filled with everything Yuengling, well worth the visit if you don't have time for the tour. After the tour we ended in the tasting room and were given two samples each. The tasting room is only for guests on the tour. You can't go in and taste unless you do the tour. Which isn't a problem, this way they can control the crowds. I tried the Raging Eagle Mango and Flight. The Flight beer is a light beer, the Raging Eagle Mango was more my style. I enjoyed it very much. There is a slight sweetness from the mango. Mr. B went with the dark brewed porter and of course had to try the seasonal special. Hershey's Chocolate Porter. The brewery has partnered with Hershey's to create this special beer. It was delicious and not real chocolate forward, just a rich beer with a finish of light chocolate. Our tour guide gave me just a sip of the Oktoberfest and it too was really nice. It was a fun afternoon of touring the brewery, tasting and shopping for gifts to bring home.

Tour is about 45 minutes long and will go through caves and the old brewery. If you go on weekends, the actual brewery machines won't be running. You get 2 free samples at end of tour.

We drove a couple hours to visit Yuengling and weren't disappointed. Tour guide was friendly and we loved hearing about the history of the company. No production on Saturday so go during the week if you want to see the facility in action. Of course the beer tasting and gift shop at the end were also highlights. We have plenty of new Yuengling merchandise to take home!

My husband and I did the Yuengling brewery tour yesterday. We are so glad we did! Our tour guide, Dustin, did a great job, and the gift shop staff are all very nice, too. We both would highly recommend taking this awesome tour - it was filled with a lot of great information and history, and it's free! Definitely worth your while!

With a brewery having so much history, I'm not sure why I was surprised to find Yuengling tucked in the middle of the town amongst nondescript homes and businesses . . . but I did. The brewery technically still operates but only produces cans and bottles. Most of the high volume production work and draft beer is produced in their newer facility across town. So what production you see here is somewhat limited but you can get real close and visitors are welcome to take as many pics and vids as they want. The real fun part with this tour is the fantastic history you learn including walking through the caves, the Rathskeller and more. This tour is not for the feeble or folks who have difficulty walking because this involves lots of stairs and navigating the wet floors in the caves. Our tour guide was wonderful but she spoke too fast at times so we missed some things she said. Suggest you try to catch the 1st tour of the WEEKDAY (as we did) cause it was much more crowded when our 10:30 am tour wrapped up. The tour wraps up with a 2 sample tasting where you can also purchase more drinks, ones to go and some snacks if you want. It's a nice ending to a great tour. Afterwards there's plenty of souvenirs to buy in the gift shop plus there's a small museum in the back to check out. What a fun way to spend a Thursday morning. This tour is very good and IMHO on par with the excellent Jack Daniel's tour.

Second visit to this awesome brewery. The tour is great and there is no charge. Definitely feel like you have stepped back in time and the history of this brewery is interesting. The tour guide was wonderful, gift shop staff are friendly. My favorite part was the tasting of two beers of your choosing. Spent way more than I intended in the gift shop but everyone back home wanted a souvenir. A definite must!!

Don’t Miss the Ever Satisfying Yuengling Brewery Tour

Yuengling lager.  Ahh yes, deliciousness in a can.  We were recently traveling through Pennsylvania looking for some cool things to do when we came across the Yuengling Brewery Tour which is the oldest brewery in America.  Sign. Me. Up.

yuengling brewery tours pa

I’ve become a big fan of this rich amber colored beer ever since we started visiting Bryanna’s grandparents in Florida.   It was always on tap at the restaurants and bars we went to, so I figured it was southern beer.   Little did I know it was a northerner, just like me.   I like it so much in fact, I’m drinking one right now.   Hey, when in Rome..or writing about Rome…or something like that.

The brewery is located in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and the streets in the town are so sloped you have to lean forward when walking up hill.   It’s on the side of a mountain, which I’ll talk about in a bit and it’s located next to a church, which I find ironically awesome.

Yuengling Brewery Tour

Alright, enough already, on with the tour.   Our guide was a young college student that was pretty soft spoken, but he definitely knew his stuff regarding the beer, the brewery, and their history.   We started by going down to the basement.   And by basement, I basically mean cave.   We’re talking Goonies here.

cave1

Our guide explained the brewery was built in this location so they could mine into the base of the mountain it was next to.   It served as the perfect refrigerator for brewing and storing their beer.   It stays at a consistent 54 degrees all year round.   It also had a stream of water coming into the basement from the mountain. Yuengling actually used this water in their brew early on before switching over to city water.

cave2

Along one full side of the long hall in the basement was a thick cinder block wall.   Our tour guide did a quick quiz on what that was for.   There were a lot of guesses: securing the beer, reinforcing the ceiling.   Well, it was put up by good old Uncle Sam during prohibition.   The entire brewing room was sealed off.   Our guide said the first shipment of beer was put on the truck and out for delivery at 12:01am the day prohibition was lifted, which is very curious since it takes 24-28 days to brew a batch 🙂

We then went upstairs and got a good look at the giant kettles used in all the phases of brewing.   Turns out this brewery is very small compared to their larger brewery in Tampa.

yuengling-brewery

After seeing this, we went to the bottling room.   This giant room was filled with conveyer belts all jammed with empty beer bottles waiting for the next shift.   We visited on a Saturday, so production was stopped, but if you come during the week, you can see this all in motion during the Yuengling Brewery Tour, which would be very cool.

yuengling-bottling1

The last stop on the tour, and probably the best part, the tasting in The Rathskeller tavern!   They have all of their brews on tap, including a seasonal brew and you get to choose 2 to try.   You get an 8-ounce cup and your guide switches over to bartender mode.   We had 6 kids with us and they have a local root beer on tap for them.   My little tip for all the parents out there- I’d say 1 glass of root beer is quite enough for a little one, and since you wouldn’t want their second one to go to waste….well, you catch my drift.

yuengling-tavern3

So you finish up the tour by  the gift shop where we picked up a few things.   Overall it was a great tour that I would highly recommend to anyone traveling in the area.   Check out Yuengling’s website for more information on the tours and directions to the brewery www.yuengling.com .

Few things to take note of:

  • The Yuengling Brewery Tour runs every hour from about 10am until 1pm Monday through Saturday.  It is all first-come, first-serve, so plan on getting there early enough to make a tour.  We arrived at about 10am and just made it into the 11am tour.  Check their website for specific dates and times www.yuengling.com/breweries/pottsville/ .
  • Narrow, steep hills getting to the brewery.   No problem in a car, but definitely plan on leaving your rig elsewhere.   The folks at the brewery said we could bring our rig and park it on the street during the tour, but after going there, I would not recommend this at all.
  • Be sure to wear close toed shoes.   They enforce this pretty strictly.
  • Bring your camera. They have no restrictions on pictures/flash/etc.   Take advantage of this since most tours don’t allow it.
  • Bring your id.   For the tasting you’ll have to show you’re 21 or older.
  • Try to go on a week day.   Seeing everything in motion would be pretty cool.

Yuengling Brewery Pilgrimage to Pottsville PA

yuengling brewery tours pa

As a home brewer for more than 30 years, my husband Michael’s bucket list includes some unique  destinations. This one is in Pottsville, a town in Pennsylvania coal country, along the banks of the Schuylkill River.

Carol Palla is guest blogging this week about a recent visit to America’s oldest brewery: Yuengling.

yuengling brewery tours pa

The first two beers that founder David G. Yuengling produced in 1829—the Lord Chesterfield Ale and the Yuengling Porter—are still produced today, along with eight other year-round brews and two seasonal offerings. At the final stage of production at this location, the beer goes into cans or bottles. Another facility handles kegs.

yuengling brewery tours pa

The history of the brewery is a central theme of the tour. This electric switch was used to start up the  production line.

Yuengling collects spent grain, a byproduct of the brewing process, in this tank. It is sold to local farmers as feed. Our guide noted that the spent grain was why the most “hoppy” cows are in Schuykill County.

yuengling brewery tours pa

The Yuengling Brewery had been producing beer for 90 years when the 18th Amendment took effect.  Federal enforcement agents discarded all beer on site and built brick walls to seal off the hand-dug caves. When preparing for the brewery’s 190th anniversary, the caves were reopened with some of the brick walls left behind as a reminder of the brewery’s history.

To make this bucket list visit even more memorable, we unexpectedly came across owner Richard “Dick” Yuengling (on the left). The company has remained privately owned within the Yuengling family for five generations. Dick Yuengling will sell the company to his four daughters when he retires. They already play key roles in running the operation.

Know before you go: This is a walking tour that goes through a historic building with an active manufacturing environment. Closed-toed shoes are required. Participants go up and down several steps of narrow stairs. Some of the walkways are uneven and the cave floor can be wet. Our tour guide gave us plenty of time to get from one area to the next. Getting there:  420 Mahantongo St, Pottsville, PA Hours:  Monday – Saturday 10:30 a.m.- 3 p.m.; Closed Sundays, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Yuengling Brewery Tour - Mural

Touring Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery, with the Family

Whenever I plan a family vacation, I always search the area for local breweries to add to the itinerary.  As a beer lover and a generally curious person, I just can’t pass up an opportunity to sample local brews and go behind the scenes to witness the brewing process.  My travels have taken me to breweries all over the world, but I had somehow never made it just one state over to visit Yuengling.

Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, PA

Family owned and operated since 1829, Yuengling holds the honor of being America’s oldest brewery.  As you can imagine, that makes for a rich history, and you can learn all about it during one of their FREE for all ages tours in Pottsville, PA.  My family and I took a ride out there a couple of weeks ago and did exactly that.

Our adventure began in front of the gift shop, where we assembled with our tour group and were introduced to our friendly and knowledgeable guide.  She started by showing us the original keg room and the equipment once used to fill the kegs.  You begin to imagine what a labor intensive task it was to work in a brewery back then, but things get really interesting when you walk into the caves.  Yep, I said caves.

Yuengling Brewery Tour - Caves

The caves were the perfect temperature for storing their beer, but creating them was no easy feat.  The above-ground building already existed, so instead of blasting the space open, workers had to hand dig everything!  Hearing the story told from an enthusiastic tour guide really helps you to fully appreciate what you’re seeing.  Simply being in a cave was enough to fascinate my children, but even they became engrossed in the history of it all.

My favorite feature of the caves is the ladder leading up to the old cistern that was once used to hold water from a nearby natural spring.  Unfortunately, the spring no longer produces the volume of water required for beer production, but I love that you can still see a little of how it worked way back when.

Yuengling Brewery Tour Stairs

Of course, you get to see the modern facilities as well.  In fact, if you take a tour on a weekday, you’ll see the live production process, complete with workers.  We happened to be there on a canning day.

Yuengling Brewery Tour

You should have seen my kids as they stood open-mouthed in amazement at all of the cans whizzing by them .  They’ve been on a lot of brewery tours, but this was their first time in an actual factory environment, and they were just enthralled.

In the midst of all that industry, you’ll also find art in the form of murals and a gorgeous stained glass ceiling.  A nice surprise, right?

There’s a story behind everything in that picture, but I won’t spoil the tour for you by giving away all the secrets here.  If you keep your eyes open while you’re walking around, you’ll notice a lot of other thought-provoking details like those.

The tour is a little over an hour long, and every minute of it is packed full of interesting sights and facts.  As you’re exploring the buildings, you’ll learn things like the brewery’s original name, how they survived prohibition, and why the ladies in that mural look so grumpy.  Once you’re done, you can relax and ponder the experience over some yummy free samples!

Yuengling Brewery Tour - Samples

Each person over 21 gets to choose two beers to try, and everyone else can opt for the birch beer.  My daughter enjoyed her birch beer, but I suspect I took even more pleasure in my samples.  And no, it wasn’t because they contained alcohol–it was because they were special.  First, I had myself a real black and tan.  I’ve had the bottled Yuengling Black and Tan countless times, but at the brewery, the guide was able to pour the combination of Porter and Premium fresh from the tap.  Maybe my opinion was influenced by the ambience, but I swear it was especially delicious.

My second choice was their new Golden Pilsner.  What makes that so special?  It’s the first year-round product that Yuengling has released in 17 years, and it’s entirely the creation of the four Yuengling daughters.  They’re the 6th generation of brewers, and it took them more than 18 months of collaboration to perfect their new recipe.  With as many brewers as I’ve met over the years, I don’t think any of them have been female, so I’m pretty excited about this development.  The beer itself is a refreshing, well-balanced blend of malt and hops, making it just right for summer.

Dick Yuengling & Golden Pilsner

The daughters weren’t available to pose for a picture with their new Golden Pilsner, so I had to settle for a cardboard cutout of their father Dick.

Believe it or not, there’s more.  If you’re looking for a souvenir, you’re sure to find something in their impressive gift shop.  If you haven’t had enough history, walk just beyond the gift shop to their little museum.  There you’ll find all sorts of Yuengling memorabilia, including documents, signage, a vintage cash register, and old bottles.

Yuengling Brewery Museum - Old Bottles

I spent so much time perusing all of the goodies in the museum that I started to worry they might kick me out!  Seriously though, if that sort of thing interests you, you’ll want to make sure you include time for it when you’re planning your day.

The tour of the Pottsville, PA facility is a must for any Yuengling fan, but you don’t need to be a beer aficionado to enjoy it.  The long and fascinating history sets it apart from any other brewery tour I’ve taken, and it’s definitely something the whole family can have fun doing together.  It’s a tribute not just to American brewing, but to American history–it’s even on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yuengling - America's Oldest Brewery

Tour America’s oldest brewery at the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pa. The tour offers guests a walk-through of the historic, original brewery building with a few modern additions.

The tour begins by taking visitors through the older sections of the brewery, including the caves used to store beer before modern refrigeration methods. There are also Prohibition-era brick walls from when the government made Yuengling close them off. Your tour guide will share how the brewery survived the Prohibition, and how the Yuengling creamy came to be. The tour guide I had was informative and definitely not dry telling the stories.

A photo posted by Cody Darrah (@codydarrah) on Nov 13, 2016 at 12:48pm PST

Afterward, you will move on to view the brew kettles along with some murals that tell the story of the brewery’s past. There is also a stop at the Rathskeller bar before finally ending up at the bottling and canning line. After telling us about the bottling and canning process, our tour guide offered to take slow motion videos of the production line on visitor’s phones, especially the ones who were not particularly tech savvy. She also offered to take photos of our group, and for any of us in front of the brewery building.

The tour takes about 45 minutes depending on questions asked and the speed of the tour guide. After the tour, there is a tasting available with the option to purchase packaged beer and growlers. Your tour guide will now become your bartender. The guides were great at helping guests decide what to try depending on personal tastes.

A photo posted by Jill Spaeth (@innerspaeth) on Nov 26, 2016 at 10:43am PST

The tasting bar is connected to the gift shop and small museum, which is currently underway. As a fan of Yuengling, I found the tour entertaining and engaging without too much focus on the beer-making process. Your guide will ask about your knowledge of the beer-making process, and the history of beer and Prohibition so you are not hearing things repeated that your group has a handle on. While it is a small building compared to modern-day breweries, there is a lot of history to uncover and plenty to drink.

POTTSVILLE, PA—Jan. 10, 2024 — In celebration of 195 years of brewing great beer, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. , the Oldest Brewery in America, and the Pottsville Area Development Corporation (PADCO), announced today the highly anticipated return of its Stars & Stripes Summer Celebration concert. The epic day-long event will take place in Historic Downtown Pottsville on July 13, 2024.  The concert is part of the brewery’s Stars & Stripes program —Yuengling’s annual initiative to support our nation’s heroes.

Lee Brice , multi-Platinum selling American country music star, highly decorated songwriter, and official Brand Ambassador for Yuengling Traditional Lager, is headlining the free, family-friendly 2024 concert celebration. The event is also part of Yuengling’s year-long support of longtime partner, Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB) —a nonprofit forging America’s leading health and wellness community for veterans.

“What could be better to highlight our Stars & Stripes Summer Celebration than the return of Lee Brice to Pottsville, on the 195 th day, of the 195 th year of Yuengling brewing great beer for every taste,” said Debbie Yuengling, 6th generation family member of D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. “Yuengling is honored to partner with PADCO and Team RWB to support veterans, while creating a special day for our local community.”

First celebrated in 2019, and brought back in 2022, Yuengling’s Stars & Stripes Summer Celebration will bring several thousand Yuengling and Lee Brice fans alike to this year’s day-long concert celebration. Fans will enjoy performances at three separate stages including the Yuengling Brewery Stage; Arch Street Stage; and the Main Stage, as well as having the opportunity to shop dozens of artisan vendors on Mahantongo and 2nd Streets, food trucks along Progress Avenue and three beer gardens along the festival’s route. Attendees will also enjoy a fireworks display, courtesy of the City of Pottsville, immediately following Lee Brice’s performance.

“With the success of the most recent 2022 celebration, we all have high expectations to once again bring this larger-than-life event together for our community,” said Savas G. Logothetides, Executive Director, Pottsville Area Development Corporation. “Lee Brice attracts music fans from all around the East Coast, so it’s a fantastic opportunity to bring together both our local community, and visitors from across the region, to enjoy a great day of family fun, and experience all that Pottsville has to offer.

“Headlining Yuengling’s Stars & Stripes Summer Concert is one of the highlights of our touring season,” said Brice. “I’m eager to be part of 195 years of Yuengling history and rock with Yuengling fans in Pottsville to celebrate America, our veteran community, and Team Red, White & Blue.”
