This California Destination Has Charming Small Towns, Incredible Wine, and a Stunning Coastline

The world’s most sustainable wine region offers far more than vino, though it does that beautifully as well.

Steve Proehl/Getty Images

As California wine goes, Sonoma County is a recognizable name, boasting some of the best pinot noir and chardonnay in the country. But there’s more to Napa’s ample neighbor than meets the eye — or in this case, palate. There are 425 wineries and 60,000 acres of vineyards — 99% of which are sustainable — but also 55-plus miles of coastline, including deserted sandy beaches, sheer cliffs, and turquoise coves. And then there are the epically beautiful inland landscapes containing glittering rivers, forested trails, and stalwart old-growth redwoods. There’s history, too, from a 19th-century Spanish mission to landmarks dedicated to local luminaries including author Jack London and Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz.

With three iconic valleys — Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander — Sonoma is the most sustainable wine region in the world with lots of permaculture and biodynamic farming of not only grapes but bounteous produce, and plenty of sustainable and ethical farms raising livestock and producing dairy. Generally speaking, it’s a slightly more laid-back and family-friendly destination than Napa, and the cost of wining, dining, and overnighting in Sonoma is typically more affordable.

Many small, friendly towns make up the county. Those include the colonial town of Sonoma itself with Mission San Francisco Solano; artsy up-and-coming Sebastopol; bucolic culinary destination Glen Ellen; architecturally significant ‘60s-era Sea Ranch; Petaluma with award-winning distilleries and small cheese farms; and Healdsburg, which has as much charm as it has immaculate food and drinks.

To reach this idyllic Eden, fly into Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) — nonstop from more than 10 major airports — if you’re taking a weekend trip and want to avoid the traffic from the Bay Area. Otherwise, rent a car at SFO and drive the hour-plus up the 101. Then, prepare for your multi-sensory feast of an adventure to unfold. Here, find everything you need to know to savor Sonoma to the fullest no matter when you go.

When to Visit Sonoma

As with most wine regions in the Northern Hemisphere, peak season in Sonoma is fall because of the yearly harvest. But after the exciting crush, as autumn’s flaming reds and oranges shape-shift into winter and winter blossoms into early spring, there’s lots to see and do — and also deals to be had. Mustard season, as January to April is known, is still quite sunny and, like the weather all year round, is subject to wild swings in temperature throughout a single day, so pack layers. That even goes for undeniably gorgeous — and typically incredibly busy — summer, since intensely hot afternoon temperatures can dip down low at night. Seafood lovers should also note that Dungeness crab season starts in November.

Things to Do in Sonoma

Wine may be the main event, but it’s far from the only attraction in Sonoma, where wellness and outdoor pursuits are aplenty. Hiking, cycling, horseback riding, canoeing , kayaking, and SUP-ing — the vast and spacious ecosystems are ripe with opportunities to breathe in fresh air and get physical. Camping is an option, too. There are wildflower walks and vineyard yoga classes, ancient trees to hug at Armstrong Redwoods State Nature Reserve, and “wiking” tours, which marry wine and hiking (such as at Jordan Winery ). Spas scattered throughout Sonoma offer proven therapies and detoxifying rituals using farm-fresh ingredients from the fertile destination — think honey, lavender, and grapes, of course, plus seaweed and shells at The Lodge at Bodega Bay . Get into the mix at you-pick farms offering sustainably grown produce ranging from apples and peaches to olives and citrus.

As healthy as Sonoma can make you, there are numerous chefs at the ready to plump you back up with world-class cuisine, much of it truly Californian, fueled by the farms, ranches, and fishermen of Sonoma. Eating, specifically eating well, is a definite to-do in the wine region that claims the three-Michelin-star SingleThread Restaurant , where the husband-and-wife owners, a chef and a farmer respectively, produce each exquisite element of their 11-course tasting menu, informed by the local terroir as well as their time in Japan. Other reservations to snag ahead of time include the culinary couple’s plant-based Little Saint , the Michelin-starred Barndiva , homegrown chef Dustin Valette’s The Matheson , and the magnificent Farmhouse Restaurant .

Sonoma has a cheese trail for the dairy obsessed, and for those craving variety, the town of Sebastopol features The Barlow . This 12-acre outdoor market district is home to distilleries and craft beer brewers as well as wineries (the Old World–styled Pax Wines is especially worth a stop); endless mouthwatering food options (everything from Detroit-style pizza to sushi); and the studios and shops of artisan makers who craft their products onsite.

Where to Stay in Sonoma County

Sonoma’s hotel scene is wonderfully diverse. For a rose-studded, wine-tinged stay with mythical cuisine, there’s Farmhouse Inn , where artisanal bath amenities are over the top and the owners’ generational connections to nearby winemakers, patissiers, brewers, cheesemakers, and other talented individuals make for highly customized, heavenly stays. On a larger scale, Montage Healdsburg is a slice of paradise where guest bungalows overlook rows of vines, Hazel Hill restaurant serves up the most flavorsome bounty plucked from Sonoma’s rich soil, and experiences from hiking to beekeeping await.

Design aficionados will appreciate interior design master Jay Jeffers’ The Madrona , a lovingly reimagined Victorian manse that comprises 24 rooms and bungalows with breathtaking views plus lush gardens, intriguing art, and a restaurant worth dressing up for. Right along Healdsburg’s plaza, highly walkable options include the luxe Hotel Healdsburg , with chef Charlie Palmer’s Dry Creek Kitchen , and h2hotel , an eco-aware gem that leans boho rustic and boasts a living green roof, complimentary bikes, and a solar-heated creekside pool. Sister property Harmon Guest House has local art galore and a similarly sustainable vibe, with chic, spacious rooms and free yoga classes for guests.

In the heart of downtown Sonoma, there’s The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection , a serene hideaway celebrating the down-to-earth spirit of Sonoma in a decidedly plush way, with some guest suites and cottages featuring outdoor soaking tubs and fireplaces, and a spa serving up treatments featuring found indigenous botanicals. Meanwhile, on the stunning Sonoma Coast, The Sea Ranch Lodge is a restored property and restaurant blending pristine natural scenes with iconic architecture.

Wineries to Visit in Sonoma County

As mentioned, there are more than 400 wineries in Sonoma County , which means there’s no risk of ever having to search for vino. That said, when planning a vacation — and booking tastings ahead of time, always advisable and often required — there are definite must-visit wineries throughout the region to keep in mind. The Donum Estate is one of the most stimulating and elegant winery experiences in the county, thanks to its delectable organic pinot noir and chardonnay, of course, but also the ever-growing collection of both architecture and monumental sculpture art. See world-class works by the likes of Ai Wei Wei, Yayoi Kusama, Tracey Emin, Doug Aitken, and Louise Bourgeois. Reserve the Transcend Experience for a pairing of estate and library wines with beautifully composed bites inside Studio Other Spaces’ prismatic Vertical Panorama Pavilion, and allot time to wander the regenerative, museum-like grounds.

Flowers Vineyards & Winery is equally an experience, with the opportunity for tastings in the House of Flowers that allow the sipper to truly appreciate the nuance and terroir of each wine, grown on the extreme Sonoma Coast since 1991 when the first organic estate vineyards were planted sustainably. Visit California’s oldest family-owned winery, Gundlach Bundschu , for 160-plus years of winemaking expertise that comes through in creative, cool-climate Bordeaux-style wines, soon to be certified regenerative organic. At Abbot’s Passage Winery & Mercantile in Glen Ellen, sit amid gnarled vines heavy with grapes to try sixth-generation vintner Katie Bundschu’s novel, experimental field blends that are beautifully named and happily surprising to the palette.

The adventurous estate with shuffleboard, bottle service, and multi-course shared-plate offerings is very family-friendly, as is Bricoleur Vineyards outside Healdsburg, where co-owners Mark Hanson and his daughter named their first sparkling rosé, Isla Rose California Brut Rosé, after her baby girl, the sixth generation of this storied Sonoma winemaking family. With easy-drinking wines, excellent food pairing and picnic options (plus wood-fired pizzas), and delightful grounds to explore, it makes for a fun half day. (A father-and-daughter duo is also behind Vérité Wines , which has a salon 20 minutes from Healdsburg for intimate tastings.) Groups can spend even more time at Francis Ford Coppola Winery , where the spotlight is on the preeminent director’s many wines, but offerings also include two swimming pools, a full-service restaurant, bocce, and movie memorabilia.

With its 1,200-acre sustainable estate and fine culinary experiences, the renowned French-style Jordan Vineyard & Winery gives guests opportunities to immerse in all things local and thoughtful. Far smaller in production, immense care goes into the bottles at DaVero , a regenerative vineyard and winery growing grapes — such as Sagrantino — many Americans have never heard of under the ethos of, “Grow what belongs here. Be patient.” In Dry Creek Valley, the holistic and tranquil Truett Hurst takes a similar approach, producing vinos that authentically impart tastes of the vineyards and characters who make them. And worthy wine tasting rooms in Healdsburg include Bacchus Landing wine cooperative, cool coastal chardonnay and pinot noir operation Marine Layer , and sommelier-owned wine bar Maison Healdsburg .

Napa Valley

Where to Stay

Meadowood

Las Alcobas

Las Alcobas

When it debuted in St. Helena in April 2017, the Yabu Pushelberg-designed Las Alcobas became the first luxury property to open in Napa Valley in seven years (next up: a Four Seasons resort with residences is scheduled to open in Calistoga sometime in 2019). With a border on Beringer Vineyards and multiple wineries within walking distance, staying on the three-and-a-half-acre property affords guests the opportunity to literally wake up among the vines. (For a truly unique experience, book a room with a fireplace-equipped terrace overlooking the vineyard.) Chef Chris Cosentino helms the Acacia House restaurant , which is located in and named for the centerpiece of the property, a renovated 1905 Georgian residence that also includes six guest rooms. The 68-room Luxury Collection resort is the second property from Las Alcobas (the first is considered the top boutique hotel in Mexico City ), and it also features a 3,500-square-foot spa with five treatment rooms. Carneros Resort and Spa

Carneros Resort

The former Carneros Inn sits on 28 acres an hour north of San Francisco. Its FARM and Boon Fly Cafe restaurants are draws for the local community, and its proximity to San Francisco may account for the long waits for tables on weekends. A recent $3.5 million spa renovation added a new entrance and reception space, expanded the relaxation area, and redesigned the treatment rooms and suites. The adults-only pool and spa are open only to guests staying at one of the resort's 100 cottages, suites, and private homes, adding to the property's ultra-private feel. SingleThread

Yes, to stay in one of the five guest rooms starts at $1,000 per night and the 11-course tasting menu is $295 per person, but the much-hyped, Japanese-inspired inn and restaurant is definitely the most exciting place to stay and dine in Sonoma County today. Chef Kyle Connaughton, who led the experimental kitchen at the Fat Duck and worked in Japan for a number of years, teamed up with his wife, Katina (who's responsible for the restaurant's farm), to launch the bold concept in 2016, and the rooms have been full ever since ( San Francisco Chronicle critic Michael Bauer gave the restaurant a rare four-star review after it opened , calling it "flawless."). The best place to start a meal is in the beautiful rooftop garden, and the service is pristine but not pretentious; "Omotenashi," the Japanese word describing the way hosts go above and beyond to anticipate their guests' needs, is just one reason the restaurant received the World's 50 Best Restaurants "One to Watch" award in 2018 . Retiring upstairs is the ideal way to end the meal, and the room rate includes an epic room-service breakfast and freebies like Harry's razors, Marvis toothpaste, and Pliny the Elder IPA from the local Russian River Brewing Co. It's hospitality taken to another level. Book Now 131 North St, Healdsburg; 707-723-4646

Where to Eat and Drink

Auberge du Soleil

Auberge du Soleil

Set into a hillside overlooking a 33-acre olive grove, the bar terrace at this 35-year-old Relais & Châteaux resort is one of the most pleasant places around to imbibe. The wine list is deep, and the service is attentive and knowledgable. The 7,000-square-foot spa here is also one of the best in the region, with services like a body exfoliation using crushed grape seeds. Aim to catch the sunset with a happy hour cocktail in hand. 180 Rutherford Hill Road, Rutherford; 800-348-5406

Press restaurant st. helena

Leslie Rudd owned Dean & Deluca for nearly a decade, so it's fitting that the market's Napa Valley location is next door to his stellar steakhouse, Press, situated among wineries on St. Helena Highway. Designed by renowned local architect Howard Backen (he also did the Napa Valley Reserve , Bill Harlan's members-only wine club, as well as Harlan's own wineries), the 75-seat main dining room inspired by L'Ami Louis in Paris retains an intimate feel—perfect for special occasions (the outdoor patio has an additional 40 seats). Order the rib eye, New York strip, or the leaner Wagyu flat iron—no matter which cut, the charred crust will have your mouth watering before a sip of high-tannin California Cabernet even hits your lips. The iPad wine list is long, and Rudd's own wines are a good place to start. For an even more elevated experience, indulge in one of the list's many vintages of Araujo, Colgin, Joseph Phelps, or Shafer Hillside Select. 587 St. Helena Highway, St. Helena; 707-967-0550

Building, Interior design, Property, Room, House, Architecture, Home, Living room, Real estate, Ceiling,

Perhaps the most pleasant indoor/outdoor restaurant in St. Helena, Archetype's dining room makes munching on oak-fired-oven pizza and yellowfin tuna salad like dining in a greenhouse. The brunch menu is available throughout lunch hours Wednesday to Sunday, so thankfully you don't need to wait for a Sunday to order a cinnamon roll and duck a buttermilk waffle served with fried chicken, spicy honey, and greens. 1429 Main Street, St. Helena; 707-968-9200

Campo Fina

Sonoma's own slice of Italy features a bocce court in its backyard—which, by the way, is also where you should request to be seated. After a pizza from the brick oven (the Margherita is a highlight) take your cortado over to the sand for a game or two. 330 Healdsburg Avenue, Healdsburg; 707-395-4640

Barn Diva

"Eat the View" is the motto at this Sonoma institution known as much for creative cocktails as it is for farm-to-table food served in a modern barn. Roast chicken may be a simple dish, but one version I tried here, served with Hobbs' bacon, roasted mushroom ragout, and egg yolk ravioli, was unlike any other bird I'd ever eaten. Local ingredients are the centerpiece of any meal. 231 Center Street, Healdsburg; 707-431-0100

SHED Healdsburg

Far more than a restaurant, Shed also offers a retail home goods store and market full of local bounty (like the flowers above). The large space features indoor and outdoor seating, a sunny spot to feast on the grub sourced from within a 10-mile radius. Come just for coffee from the bar or stay for a full meal of highlights like butternut squash soup and slow-roasted lamb shoulder. 25 North Street, Healdsburg; 707-431-7433

Goose & Gander

Goose & Gander

If you have a hankering for cocktails, Goose & Gander's are among the best in Napa Valley. The Coastal Pimm's Cup , made with Pimm’s No.1, St. George Terroir Gin, lemon juice, bitters, ginger beer, and bay laurel, is worth the trip alone. 1245 Spring Street, St. Helena; 707-967-8779

Chef Richard Reddington established a presence in the valley in 2005 with his namesake restaurant, Redd , before opening this buzzy outpost focused on wood-fired pizza seven years later. Note: While 10 tables are saved for walk-ins, the weekend wait times can be up to an hour and a half. 6755 Washington Street, Yountville; 707-299-5030

Ad Hoc Yountville

Chef Thomas Keller has three restaurants in Yountville (five if you count Bouchon Bakery and Addendum), so it's no surprise the town has been nicknamed "Kellerville." While Bouchon is great for bistro food and the French Laundry is an institution unto itself (with reservations booked almost solid a month in advance), Ad Hoc is unique for its prix-fixe, four-course menu that's served family-style. The selections change daily, and picky diners can check the menu online in advance of their evening visit, but insiders know they can always request the restaurant's famous buttermilk fried chicken or a vegetarian option. Addendum , the takeout-focused option in the garden behind the restaurant, serves box lunches ($17.50) with a choice of fried chicken, barbecue pork ribs, or pulled pork sandwich accompanied by two side dishes. 6476 Washington Street, Yountville; 707-944-2487

Wineries to Visit

Silver Oak Oakville Winery

Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer began producing exclusively cabernet sauvignon in 1972, the first winery in the valley to focus specifically on one grape variety. Since then, the business, now run by Ray's son David, has expanded to two Silver Oak wineries (one in Oakville and a new facility on 113 acres in Healdsburg that the Chronicle dubbed California's "most eco-friendly winery" ) and two Twomey sister facilities that produce pinot noir, merlot, and sauvignon blanc. Napa Valley: 915 Oakville Crossroad, Oakville; 707-942-7022; Alexander Valley: 7300 Highway 128, Healdsburg; 707-942-7082

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Stag's Leap is famous for creating the winning red wine at the 1976 Judgment of Paris (a bottle of 1973 cabernet sauvignon), and now the winery is focusing on food and wine pairing with the Cellarius Kitchen Experience by Chef Travis Westrope , a $175-per-person four-course meal that's offered every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at noon. A recent offering combined the winery's 2015 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon with Cattaneo Brothers linguica sausage, baby leeks, marble potatoes, pickled mustard seed, garlic aioli, egg yolk, and togarashi. 5766 Silverado Trail, Napa; 707-261-6410

Grgich Hills

Grgich Hills Napa

Miljenko ("Mike") Grgich was the winemaker who created the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that won the Judgment of Paris . Grgich's bottle and beret are now in the Smithsonian, and this year, visitors at the winery can sample a 40th-anniversary offering crafted to resemble the vintage that put Napa Valley wines on the world stage. Also, during harvest season visitors can stomp grapes in a barrel at the winery, which Grgich himself did starting at age three when he was growing up in Croatia. Don't worry—the juice and stomped grapes are used as compost in the vineyard afterward, not for wine. 1829 St. Helena Highway, Rutherford; 707-963-2784

Opus One

Founded in 1979 by two of the most famous names in wine at the time—Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild—Opus One is a Bordeaux blend that has always been among the highest-priced wines in Napa. In 1993, in the tradition of Bordeaux estates, it began bottling a second wine called Overture . Tastings ($50 per person) and tours (from $85 per person, with tastings included) are available by appointment only. 7900 St. Helena Highway, Oakville; 707-944-9442

Trinchero Napa Valley

Living room, Room, Interior design, Ceiling, Building, Property, Furniture, Home, House, Design,

The Trinchero family made its name in Napa after Italian immigrant Mario Trinchero moved west from New York City with his wife and three young children in 1948 and bought an abandoned Prohibition-era winery in St. Helena. Its commercial success, Sutter Home, drove the business in the 1970s (if you've heard of white zinfandel, it's because of this brand, which now has dozens of wine labels to its name). The namesake brand, Trinchero Napa Valley, recently opened a new tasting room by local designer Erin Martin, the final phase of a $36 million investment in the property. 3070 North St. Helena Highway, St. Helena, 707-963-1160

Schramsberg

Schramsberg

Ask any winemaker in Napa or Sonoma for their favorite local sparkling wine, and chances are he or she will respond with Schramsberg. The Calistoga-based winery, founded in 1862, produces only sparkling wine, both whites and rosé. After Robert Louis Stevenson tasted them in 1880, he wrote of founder Robert Schram, "his serious gusto warmed my heart." Tours and tastings, starting at $70 per person, are available by appointment only. 1400 Schramsberg Road, Calistoga; 800-877-3623

How to Get Around

T3 Tesla Tours and Transportation

While driving yourself around while wine tasting is certainly an option, it's not one we'd recommend. Save yourself the worry and book a driver with extensive knowledge of the region, like T3, whose personable drivers operate a fleet of four Tesla Model S sedans. You'll thank yourself when you get home safely after a day of drinking. 707-724-0247

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Sonoma, California

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Sonoma, California

Welcome to Sonoma, California, home to an iconic wine valley, charming towns, and beautiful accommodations. Sonoma is a place to relax, unwind, and soak in those relaxed Northern California vibes we all love so much. It has become like a second home for us over the years, so I am thrilled to share my travel guide to Sonoma.

Often times the whole area gets referred to as “Sonoma” so it’s important to differentiate a bit. There is Sonoma County, which encompasses the entire region ranging from as far north as Healdsburg down to Santa Rosa. Then there is Sonoma Valley which is the 17-mile-long valley that starts in the southern part of Carneros up to Kenwood. And finally, the unincorporated town of Sonoma (located in the valley). I’ll be focusing on the valley and the town in this guide.

Navigate Northern California Like a Local!

Unlock the best-kept secrets of Northern & Central California with my curated Google Map, showcasing 600+ accommodations, eateries, coffee shops, and unique experiences. Get the map here!

I love the town of Sonoma itself as a central location to many gems in the valley. The historic square has lovely restaurants, and you’re close to several beautiful wineries, and great hotels. Sonoma is one of my favorite weekend breaks in Northern California, whether it’s a trip with girlfriends, a romantic getaway in the Bay Area , or even a solo trip. We often just pop in for the day too.

On a recent trip, I had the chance to stay at the upscale MacArthur Place Hotel + Spa which has the loveliest suites and is within walking distance of the square. I went with my toddler and husband and we had a great family trip together in Sonoma. I revisited a few restaurants and wineries, plus stopped in at a few new spots I hadn’t been to before.

So I’m rounding up all of my intel from my time in Sonoma and sharing where to eat, where to stay, and what to do while visiting. Check out the guide below!

Travel Guide to Sonoma, California

What to know before traveling to sonoma.

When is the best time of year to visit Sonoma ? My favorite time to visit Sonoma is always fall or spring as the temperature is always mildest. Summer can be pretty hot so I’d recommend having access to a pool if you do go say in the summer. The winter months are slower and quieter, so if you’re looking for a visit sans the crowd, winter is great too. Sonoma has year-round opportunities to visit so it’s a preference of weather and experience!

How many days for a trip to Sonoma? I love spending a long weekend in Sonoma as it gives me ample time to experience a few wineries and the town. We also often will go for the day and do a wine tasting and a meal out. There is a lot to see, so extra time is welcomed if you’re coming out of town and want to do a few things.

Which airport do you fly into for Sonoma? This is what makes Sonoma so easy to visit! You have several regional and international airports within earshot. The closest airport would be Sonoma County Airport, then Sacramento International, and all of the Bay Area airports like San Francisco or Oakland.

Where would you go before/after Sonoma? Since Sonoma is such a popular destination for a road trip in Northern California, you can pair it with many other destinations. I would consider starting in San Francisco , coming to Sonoma, then heading out to the Marin/Sonoma coast for a few days.

Where to Stay in Sonoma

The macarthur place hotel & spa.

My choice for a hotel to stay at while visiting Sonoma is the MacArthur Place Hotel and Spa. We had the pleasure of staying this last month. The historic estate features 64 guest rooms and suites that are laid out across the property. Some are stand-alone or adjoined, and then others are clustered in quaint buildings. I loved the feeling the property itself gave — you strolled through gardens lush with roses and greenery as you went to your room.

The suites are beautifully designed, each unique in its layouts and a few extra amenities which is why I recommend booking in this category. Some have outdoor showers/tubs and terraces, and all come with their own fireplace. I loved how ours opened up with a balcony terrace to view the garden.

One of the best parts of the property is the onsite dining. From the bar to Layla, you could enjoy elevated cuisine both in the restaurant and in the room. Layla, the main restaurant, serves lovely seasonal fare that features elevated ingredients with Mediterranean inspiration. It’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the front of the entrance, you’ll find the Porch, perfect for a coffee or pastry to go throughout the day.

If this accommodation is not available, consider booking at one of these hotels: The Lodge at Sonoma Resort Kenwood Inn and Spa The Gaige House

The Best Restaurants in Sonoma

Valley Bar + Bottle Shop – One of the best additions to the square, it is so lovely to have a younger spot opened in Sonoma. Season Mediterranean food paired with a natural wine menu all set in a young and lively space. It’s a must-stop every time we are there!

Layla – Located inside the chic MacArthur Place Hotel, Layla is the spot for elevated, fine dining. You can come for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but my first choice would be dinner. Its Mediterranean cuisine is fresh, full of flavor, and perfect after a day of wine tasting.

Animo – The newest spot to open by former Per Se Chef Smookler opened up this restaurant with his wife. You can make reservations via the link in their IG profile for now. A menu focused on hearth-driven cuisine, dry-aged meats, and fish. The food looks spectacular.

Glen Ellen Star – This is one of our favorite restaurants in Northern California. Often we will drive from Sacramento to just eat here. Their roasted vegetables, homemade pizza and pasta, and everything else is just perfection. Highly recommend making a reservation in advance.

The Girl & the Fig – It’s synonymous with Sonoma dining and one you can’t miss while visiting. A menu with fresh salads and lots of French-inspired food is located right on the historic square.

El Molino Central – A counter-service style restaurant serving some incredible Mexican. Even though it is quite casual, it is elevated cuisine and you can miss things like the halibut tacos.

Folktable Restaurant – Just about a 10-minute drive out of the square you’ll find the complex called Cornerstone Sonoma. Inside, Folktable Restaurant is one of the best brunches around. I love their Dungeness crab roll, fish + chips, and burger.

Wit & Wisdom – It’s always lovely to experience Chef Michael Mina’s cuisine and this is his spot in wine country. Hearty dishes, bold flavors, and local cuisine.

Where to Wine Taste in Sonoma

Abbott’s Passage It’s a young and modern winery that definitely requires a reservation in advance. There are a few different ways to experience the wines here like their food pairing at the field tables. I love the atmosphere here and the wine is delicious. Don’t forget to stop in their mercantile store as well!

Scribe Winery One of our favorites in the area for being super young. Their tastings are all accompanied by food from, rotating chefs as well. Reservations are open only to members, so it may be worth becoming one if you are familiar with the wines!

Three Sticks Winery at the Adobe My choice for a wine tasting near Sonoma Square. Set in a historic Adobe, you can taste Three Stick’s collection of chardonnay and pinot noir.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery There are several ways to experience Gundlach Bundschu, ranging from food tastings to private tours. The setting here is tranquil and makes for a lovely experience. Seasonally, there are concerts held here as well!

Imagery Estate Winery For those looking to taste more uncommon varietals, you will enjoy Imagery. Located in Glen Ellen, this is a favorite for a laidback tasting with great wine.

Hamel Family Wines The location and the building itself are absolutely beautiful, set with breathtaking views as it’s perched up on the hillside. Their wine is incredible and all organic as well.

Things to do in sonoma, shop home decor.

You’ll find several home decor stores while in Sonoma, but my two favorites are Artefact Design & Salvage and Chateau Sonoma. Artefact Design & Salvage is my favorite for unique finds for the home. The other store you can’t miss is Chateau Sonoma right on the square for all things French. Chateau Sonoma has the loveliest antiques and home goods from France, it’s worth popping in even to just browse.

Do a food + wine pairing at Abbot’s Passage

You have several choices for wine tasting in Sonoma, but one that I think is a truly unique experience. I’d recommend booking a Field Table wine tasting at Abbot’s Passage Winery. A family-style meal prepared by Chef Kyle is paired with small lot wines. The tasting paired with food elevates both the wine itself and the ingredients local to Sonoma. For me, this feels like a quintessential Northern California wine experience, one immersed in nature and connected to the land. You can reserve in advance and it is a 90-minute experience.

Stock up on local produce

The entire Sonoma area is full of so many wonderful local farms. You’ll find them throughout the valley, so I always love to stop in before I head home. One of my favorites that I went to on this trip was Oak Hill Farm in Glen Ellen. Their red barn is open on Saturdays and it was full of vegetables, local goods, and dried flowers.

Have a spa day

There are a few places to indulge in spa experiences in Sonoma, each very unique. For those looking for a traditional, elevated spa experience, book at the Spa at MacArthur . Their range of services utilizes their own ingredients grown on the property and has everything from massages to facials.

For those looking to adventure out and go for a drive into Sonoma County, the OSMOSIS Day Spa Sanctuary is my choice. It’s located in Freestone on a beautiful piece of land. The Japanese-inspired treatments like the cedar bath are some of the best in the valley.

Get outdoors and hike

Sonoma is home to several hiking areas, so if you’re in the mood to go for a morning hike there are a few places to go. A couple of favorites include Sonoma Valley Regional Park, Jack London State Park, and Annadel State Park.

Take a trip to the coast

If you’re looking for a quick coastal break, head out towards Bodega Bay and Jenner. They’re a quick trip from Sonoma itself and make for a wonderful afternoon excursion. There is a lot to see in this stretch, so check out this guide for a list of recommendations.

Ps — are you booking a trip soon use my booking checklist.

These are the sites I use most to book my own trips. Using the links below is a great way to support Bon Traveler’s travel journalism at no extra cost to you . If you need help organizing your itinerary, get my free travel itinerary template here .

1. Book Your Flights

Use Skyscanner to find the best flights. It searches 100s of airlines and websites across the globe to ensure you’re not missing out on any route options or deals.

2. Book Your Accommodations

Use Booking.com for hotels and guest houses. They have the biggest inventory and consistently offer the best rates.

3. Book Your Tours & Experiences

Use Viator or Get Your Guide to find the best tours and experiences. They are my favorite tour search engines. I always check both as their inventory varies depending on the destination.

4. Book Your Car

Use Discover Cars or Rentalcars.com to find the best car rental deals. I recommend comparing rental agency reviews on Google to ensure you are booking with the best company in that destination, as the reviews are often more accurate than the car rental search engines.

5. Don’t Forget Airport Lounge Access

Get a Priority Pass membership to gain access to 1,400+ VIP lounges and airport experiences worldwide. The Priority Pass app is the first thing I check when I have a layover. I’ve been a member for over a decade, and having a comfortable place to relax before and between flights makes air travel so much more enjoyable.

6. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.

My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:

  • World Nomads (best for all-around)
  • Safety Wing (best for frequent travelers)

The Perfect Sonoma County Wine Country Itinerary for First Time Visitors

Imagery Estate Winery

Enjoying the good life in Sonoma County. Photo Courtesy of Imagery Family Winery

Whether you’re new to wine or a seasoned pro, few wine destinations offer more appeal than Sonoma County . With an inviting tapestry of valleys, mountains, and coastlines spanning over 60,000 acres of vineyards, each of the region’s 400 wineries offers a distinctive wine tasting experience just north of San Francisco and west of Napa Valley.

Like many other California wine regions , Sonoma County is divided into smaller sub-regions, known as American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). The iconic Russian River Valley, known for its cool-climate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, contrasts with the warmer Alexander Valley, a haven for full-bodied yet structured Cabernet Sauvignons. The Sonoma Coast AVA, with vineyards cooled by ocean breezes, gifts wine lovers with ethereal Pinot Noirs, while the Moon Mountain District, rising more than 2,000 feet above Sonoma Valley, offers sun-drenched Zinfandels and robust red blends. And this is just a glimpse; there are 19 unique AVAs to explore here.

Sonoma County’s vibe is one of relaxed, totally welcoming sophistication. Visitors can easily fill their time exploring not just historic estates and boutique wineries, but an exciting culinary scene, buzzing city squares, lodging options that range from cozy to downright decadent, and adventure, outdoor, and wellness-driven activities for every type of traveler.

With so much to do and see, we’ve created a helpful three-day itinerary to guide your visit, whether you’re a first-time visitor or lifelong fan.

The Perfect Sonoma County Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Hop Kiln Estate

Come back down from the adrenaline rush with a wine tasting and light lunch at Fort Ross & Winery in the coastal town of Jenner. Sample elegant coastal-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinotage while you nosh on thoughtfully paired small bites like garlic and herb hush puppies and Yucatán-style chicken tacos in a tasting room overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

At this point, you’ll likely need to catch your flight from the Sonoma County Airport, which is roughly an hour away. Make a mental note to spend more time on the Sonoma Coast on your next visit, then enjoy the scenic drive back to Santa Rosa before heading home.

How to Get There

Reaching this wine- and food-lover’s dream is easier than you might think. Sonoma County Airport (STS), located in Santa Rosa, is the easiest gateway , with airlines providing connections to and from many major US cities; this itty-bitty regional airport is also a dream to fly in and out of. Alternatively, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK) are both just a scenic 60-90 minute drive away, depending on that pesky Bay Area traffic. Sonoma County directly borders Napa Valley, so if a longer Northern California Wine Country exploration is planned, traveling between the two regions is easy.

Final Pro Tips:

Be responsible, make a reservation, don’t forget to spit, don’t be shy.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned enthusiast, Sonoma County offers a rich and diverse wine experience, any time of year. This three-day itinerary filled with wine tastings, culinary delights, and outdoor adventures ensures a memorable journey through this incredible wine destination, and we have a feeling it’ll leave you wanting to return sooner than later.

9 Best Things To Do in Sonoma

Updated April 11, 2024

Sonoma is all about the wine. Everywhere you turn, you'll spot undulating hills lined with rows of grape vines punctuated by grand architecture. Places like Jacuzzi Family Vineyards , Cline Cellars and Ravenswood Winery are some of the top-rated

  • All Things To Do

sonoma county travel and leisure

Sonoma Plaza Sonoma Plaza free

Centered in the heart of town, the historic Sonoma Plaza is a must-do. Once a Mexican military station and a Spanish mission village, the 8-acre park is now lined with more than 100 shops, dozens of eateries, and more than 20 tasting rooms. What's more, it's a National Historic Monument. Recent visitors highly recommended spending some time here window shopping, wine tasting, dining and even letting the kids run around the on-site playground. Reviewers said the plaza's atmosphere is both charming and family-friendly, and they suggested visiting on a Tuesday morning to take advantage of the weekly farmers market.

Sonoma Plaza is located in central Sonoma. Restaurants and shops have varying opening and closing times. Street parking is available, but with three-hour limits from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For extended parking options, consider leaving your vehicle in one of the free all-day lots located nearby, such as the one at First Street East, located across from the mission. For more information, visit Sonoma Plaza's website .

Jacuzzi Family Vineyards Jacuzzi Family Vineyards

Back in the 1920s, Valeriano Jacuzzi – of the Jacuzzi bath and spa family – bought a 161-acre plot of land in Northern California, which would one day become the Jacuzzi Family Vineyards. Today, the vineyards contain common grape varietals like chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, as well as some more unique ones like arneis. Along with wine tastings and vineyard tours, Jacuzzi also offers house-made olive oils.

Recent travelers remarked on the beauty of the rolling landscape, as well as the architecture, which features Italian stonework and arched windows and a central piazza. The staff also receives applause for its friendliness. Others highly recommend this vineyard to travelers who enjoy Italian varietals and blends. The primitivo and prosecco, in particular earn high praise from visitors.

Buena Vista Winery Buena Vista Winery

Located less than 3 miles east of Sonoma Plaza , the Buena Vista Winery is one of the region's most centralized wineries – though its rolling hills and the rustic elegance of its architecture lend it a French country ambiance. And speaking of the French, the Champagne – which the winery gets kudos for – hails from France. Here's another fun fact: Founded in 1857, Buena Vista is California's first winery to produce European varietal wines. Visitors can enjoy this historic winery by tasting its vintages and touring its facility.

Visitors to the winery highly recommend adding it to your Sonoma itinerary. They especially suggest taking the tour of its grounds and facilities to learn all about the winery's process and its illustrious history. For example, the founder, the self-proclaimed "Count of Buena Vista," met his end in alligator-infested waters in Nicaragua. They also recommend concocting your own bottle of vino in the winery's mixing room.

Jack London State Historic Park Jack London State Historic Park

Located on 1,400 acres, Jack London State Historic Park – named for the author of works like "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang" – features 20 miles of trails. The land, which London referred to as "Beauty Ranch," also features his old home, a museum about London and his family, and London's gravesite, where he was laid to rest at the age of 40.

Recent visitors were delighted with the Jack London State Historic Park, noting its beauty and all of the interesting anecdotes they learned about the writer's adventurous life. Others said the mix of literature and outdoors is wonderful, though some warned that the hiking can be a bit challenging, especially on hot days.

Sonoma Coast State Park Sonoma Coast State Park

Sonoma Coast State Park is a swath of land that extends for nearly 20 miles along the Pacific Ocean from Bodega Head to Vista Trail. A number of sandy beaches, rugged shorelines and coastal prairies dot the area. Although a number of gorgeous beaches line the park, the California Department of Parks and Recreation doesn't recommend swimming as the waters are rough. Still, rock fishing, surf fishing and beach combing are popular activities here.

Visitors say the rugged shoreline and crashing waves at Sonoma Coast State Park are pretty awe-inspiring. They also recommend taking advantage of the trails that crisscross the park.

Benziger Family Winery Benziger Family Winery

As its name suggests, this winery has been family-owned and operated since 1980. Aside from its familial leadership, Benziger is perhaps best known for its biodynamic farming and winemaking. In fact, all of its wines are certified sustainable, organic or biodynamic.

Reviewers highly recommend the informative, award-winning tours, which take visitors through the property's vineyards, gardens and sheep fields. Recent guests also highlighted the remote beauty of the winery, which is located in Glen Ellen, less than 10 miles north of Sonoma.

sonoma county travel and leisure

Cline Cellars Cline Cellars

Cline Cellars makes a nice flight of wines, and they do so with sustainability in mind. They even created a new method of farming – the Green String farming method – to promote biodiversity and biological cycles. And instead of using pesticides to eliminate weeds, the winery relies on a herd of 1,500 sheep and 500 goats. Guests of Cline Cellars can say hello to some of the animals on their winery tours, before which they'll also learn about the history of the property and see the barrel room.

Recent travelers raved about the gorgeous estate, the delicious wine and the staff, which reviewers said were not only friendly, but also enthusiastic. Many reviewers also said that Cline Cellars offers nice wines at a decent price point, especially when compared to other wineries in the area.

sonoma county travel and leisure

Nicholson Ranch Nicholson Ranch

Though Nicholson Ranch is smaller than other Sonoma-area wineries (comprising 40 acres), it's a hit with visitors thanks to its intimate setting. Wines produced here – the majority of which are made with estate-grown fruit – include chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot and syrah. Another interesting facet of the production process: The vineyard ages its wines in French oak barrels, which are uniquely stored underground in caves.

Recent travelers said this relatively small winery was big on charm. The intimate setting was complemented by friendly and informative guides and gorgeous views of surrounding Sonoma. Reviewers also appreciated that the bottles of wine were reasonably priced.

Safari West Safari West

Picture the Serengeti in the heart of wine country and you'll start to imagine what Safari West looks like. This African-inspired safari and nature preserve contains 900 exotic animals, such as zebras, giraffes and cheetahs, spread across 400 acres. When you're not exploring the grounds on your own two feet or in an open-air safari vehicle, spend the night gazing up at the stars in one of the preserve's luxury tents (more like glamping than camping).

Visitors say Safari West is a great way to experience the wildlife and terrain native to Africa without ever leaving the United States. Along with the amazing animals and beautiful landscape, travelers also praise the knowledgeable and friendly staff.

INSIDER’S TIP: SMALL-LOT SIPS AT B.R. COHN WINERY

Find B.R. Cohn Winery in paradise-like Glen Ellen, where the mountains shroud from the coastal fog and promote generous airflow over the vineyards, which are planted over hot springs. The magical setting of one of the best Sonoma wineries sees grapes bursting with tannins, which vintners then craft into full-bodied estate, small-lot, and limited-release wines. The best way to enjoy a visit is with a wine flight, where vintners guide you through a tasting against the backdrop of the 55 gorgeous acres of the winery. Treat yourself to an add-on of a local cheese plate, too.

Reap the benefits of a Travel + Leisure Wine membership, with an exclusive wine club gift and a complimentary wine flight tasting for 2-4 people at B.R. Cohn, depending on your membership tier.

SONOMA BIKE RENTAL & WINE ROUTES

Insider’s tip: time-honored tasting at kunde family winery.

Five generations have worked this stunning 1,850-acre estate — crafting wines from the lush devil’s food cake notes of the 2018 Reserve Century Vines zinfandel, to the crisp and citrus-forward 2021 Magnolia Lane sauvignon blanc. A special treat here are the dog hikes, where you can bring your pup and join winegrower Jordan Kunde through the gorgeous vineyard rows and grasslands before a winetasting and country lunch. Or, opt for the mountaintop tour and tasting, which begins with a vineyard tour and ends at the tasting deck. Perched 1,400 above Sonoma Valley, this experience is truly a highlight of your weekend in Sonoma.

Plus, Travel + Leisure Wine members can savor an exclusive wine club gift, a complimentary 2-4 person seated tasting experience at Kunde (depending upon your membership tier), and the option to add an artisan cheese plate for just $15.

INSIDER’S TIP: CALIFORNIA-CURATED CUISINE AT VALETTE

Insider’s tip: cold & bold bottles at sonoma coast vineyards.

No weekend in Sonoma is complete without a chance to chill out — as in by savoring the cold-climate wines of Sonoma Coast Vineyards. The winery harvests grapes from the cold-climate soils by the Pacific and west of the Russian River Valley, turning out bottles with bracing flavors. Gems include the gently bubbly Brut Rosé with hints of cranberry and ripe melon and the silky 2018 Pinot Noir which boasts boysenberry and white pepper notes, rounded by a hint of tobacco leaf. A jaunt to the bright tasting room is also your chance to sip winery-exclusive bottlings while you overlook beautiful Bodega Bay.

Bonus: Travel + Leisure Wine members can get an exclusive wine club gift, plus a complimentary 2-4 person self-guided flight experience at Sonoma Coast, depending upon your membership tier.

SMALL GROUP SONOMA WALKING FOOD TOUR

Insider’s tip: farm-fresh fare at the matheson, insider’s tip: italian inspirations at viansa.

Think of this last stop on your Sonoma itinerary as trip across both California and Italy, as the founding winemaking Sebastiani family traces their roots back to the rolling Tuscan hills. Italian inspiration shines through the warm and celebratory experiences at the hilltop villa, which offers panoramas of all of Sonoma Valley, along with the wetland preserve that borders the olive tree-dappled vineyards. Among the exceptional elixirs here is the 2018 Cielo “Quattro” super Tuscan red blend — its notes of sweet oak, violet, and dark chocolate boosted by the 26-month aging process. Tasting experiences include a private wine flight in the grownup treehouse-like custom Outlooks, to cozy sips by the fire in the Loggia alcove. Be sure to traipse to the Market, too, where you can feast on irresistible Italian meats, cheeses, and prepared foods to pair with the wondrous wines.

At Viansa, Travel + Leisure Wine members can take advantage of an exclusive wine club gift, plus a complimentary 2-4 person wine flight tasting experience, depending on your membership tier.

Delicious Secrets: 8 Best Restaurants in Forestville and Graton

Forestville and Graton are an adorable pair of towns in Sonoma County that are located in the scenic, mountainous inland area of the county. Though the pair of communities contain a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it quality, the dining options are lauded and delicious. With noted comparisons to upscale establishments in New York City and elsewhere, the restaurants of these two villages are their own culinary universe.

Farmhouse inn & restaurant.

Sophistication meets the downhome Sonoma County spirit at the Farmhouse Inn Restaurant. This eatery is Michelin-rated and known for its great wine list, and the attached hotel was rated one of the best in the world by Travel and Leisure magazine. A stay at the Farmhouse Inn includes help from one of the hotel’s knowledgeable concierges, who will be happy to help plan your winery itinerary.

Insider Tip

The owners of the Farmhouse Inn Restaurant also own Lost and Found, and tastings of the winery’s bottles can be sampled at the restaurant.

Russian River Vineyards Restaurant & Farm

This eclectic favorite serves new takes on American classics like ribeye steak and pork chops. Guests can either eat indoors, or venture out to Russian River Vineyards Restaurant & Farm’s spacious outdoor seating area. One of the few wineries in the area with a complete restaurant attached, it can be the delicious end to a day of winery visiting.

Eat out on the wonderful patio without worrying about bug bites—hundreds of bats come out at dusk and quickly devour any pests.

Willow Wood Market Cafe

This cozy restaurant in the sleepy village of Graton was compared by Wine Spectator to restaurants in the East Village of New York City, with the magazine calling it a “hip gathering spot for local elite winemakers and wine travelers alike.” Updated and upscale versions of American delights fill the menu, like the open-faced egg sandwich with Fontana cheese and pesto. Weekend brunch is a favorite for locals: expect a line, but the lattes, served in a bowl like in France, are worth it.

Pair that giant latte with Willow Wood Market Café’s amazing Monte Cristo sandwich, served on French toast.

Canneti Roadhouse Italiana

Canneti Roadhouse Italiana brings a sunny slice of Tuscany to Forestville with some imaginative options on the menu. Pretty much everything is made in-house, including the bread, cured meats, and even the mozzarella. If you were never spoiled by an Italian grandmother, the desserts, including a fantastic tiramisu, will make up for it.

Don't worry if the dining room looks bereft of hungry diners—it's not. All the locals are hidden away on the back porch where you can't see them at first entrance.

Mexico Lindo Restaurant

It's easy not to notice this place because Willow Wood Market Café and other nearby commanding restaurants, but the guacamole at this little eatery will be enough to get your full attention. With a charming patio surrounded by plants, Mexico Lindo could easily be the best Mexican spot in Graton: it’s alarmingly easy to gorge yourself on the hefty portions of tamales or black beans and rice, so remember to pace yourself.

The chicken mole, made with chocolate and a complex array of spices, is amazing, especially in the enchiladas.

Nightingale Breads

Nightingale Breads is not technically a restaurant, but it is a favorite bakery of visitors and locals alike (many area restaurants serve their products). It will take quite an amount of patience to not tear into the artisan breads as soon as you buy them, but the hearty ryes, sourdoughs, or sandwich-ready baguettes are a tasty way to carb up before a day of winery tours.

Call Nightingale Breads ahead of your visit to see when the next bake is. Get there quickly—they run out pretty quickly.

Even if all  Sonoma County  had to offer were its legendary wines, you’d have more than enough reason to visit. Consider that there are literally hundreds of gorgeous local wineries, many of them award-winning—two having just nabbed the coveted platinum and several having taken home the gold at the 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards.

But the year has been good to more than Sonoma County’s wines. The region also ranks among Forbes Top Destinations for 2021 and Travel + Leisure’s Best Places to Travel in 2021 thanks to all kinds of new openings, in addition to the longstanding enticements of this prime patch of Northern California: soaring redwoods, rugged coastline, historic settlements and a whole series of foodie pilgrimage sites.

And getting here has never been easier, with a growing roster of direct flights into the  Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (yup,  that  Charles M. Schulz; we’ll come back to him soon). So pick an upcoming weekend—or even better, a full week—and pack your bags. Here are eight of our favorite things to do upon arrival.

Explore a tale of two trees

sonoma county travel and leisure

Wherever you’d place yourself on the tree-hugger scale, there’s a Sonoma County park for that. At one end of the spectrum, you’ll find the Healdsburg-area redwoods of Riverfront Park , where the short Redwood Hill Trail will lead you through a gorgeous grove’s worth of the towering icons.

Then again, the springs and pools are just the start of Sonoma County's wellness offerings. Practically everything that's grown locally finds its way into at least one sublime spa offering, from the lavender and olive oils that make their way into massages to the antioxidant-rich wine grapes and grape seeds that supercharge scrubs, facials and wraps. But arguably the best survey of Sonoma County's abundance—spa style, at least—is the Nurtured by Nature treatment at the Farmhouse Inn's Wellness Barn, an extravaganza that includes a wild mustard seed mask, an apple blossom scrub, an olive oil balm and—in honor of the redwoods—a woodsy mist.

Hang with notable locals

sonoma county travel and leisure

For killer coastal views with a side of history, head 11 miles north of Jenner to Fort Ross, a Russian-era compound with exhibits on this imperial settlement, as well as on the early California Ranch era and the indigenous Kashaya territory.

And if you find the Sonoma County coast so compelling you don't want to leave (spoiler alert: you will), settle in at Timber Cove —a place that feels almost like your coolest friend's cabin, complete with fire pits, ping pong and pool (plus ocean views for days).

Eat like a food editor

sonoma county travel and leisure

Apropos of the latter: Among the just-announced Bay Area Michelin ratings, a new star was born, literally: Barndiva in Healdsburg just scored a star, thanks to “prime local produce and sustainability…a tangible deftness in such aromatic flavor combinations as seared dayboat scallops with lemongrass-ginger butter sauce; as well as hamachi with green papaya, fermented mango, and serrano oil.” Meanwhile, the same town’s three-star standout, SingleThread Farms , retained its rating this year with a menu  “acutely tuned to each micro-season in Sonoma County,” one prime example being the cold-weather pumpkin tartare with Dungeness crab and miso-makrut lime foam.

sonoma county travel and leisure

But don't forget those 2021 Decanter World Wine Award winners we mentioned earlier—wineries that in and of themselves warrant a trip for true oenophiles. Be sure to visit at least one, from Frei Brothers for the Reserve Merlot (platinum) to Rodney Strong Vineyards for the Alexander's Crown Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (gold) to Alexander Valley Vineyards for the merlot (silver).

Wherever you find yourself tasting the local wines, they'll not only taste good, but also serve up a feel-good element: Having resolved seven years ago to become the most sustainable wine region on earth, Sonoma County has been working steadily toward that goal, and today, a reported 99% of the county's vineyard acreage has been certified sustainable. Thus the Sustainably Farmed Sonoma County Grapes label you'll find on millions of bottles of wine.

Don't let the other local beverages feel left out

Not to be outdone, the local beer, cider and booze are gaining their own acclaim. In fact, you'll find a number of hotspots, from Parliament Brewing Company to  Young & Yonder Spirits  (try the award-winning absinthe)   included in the Sonoma County Tasting Pass alongside standout vineyards.

A few other options to consider If craft beer's your thing:  The Barlow , an open-air marketplace in Sebastopol that houses Crooked Goat Brewing, Woodfour Brewing Company, and Seismic Brewing Co., for starters;  Henhouse Brewing Company , known for a focus on unusual and "underappreciated" styles; Russian River Brewing Co. , where lines form around the block for Pliny the Younger; and the  Shady Oak Barrel House , whose award-winning sours and hoppy, artisanal ales on best enjoyed on the creekside patio.

sonoma county travel and leisure

Hard cider, while usually made from apples, can be brewed with almost any fruit, as well as hops. Sample the surprisingly sophisticated results at Sebastopol's  Ace Cider , home to a staggering variety,  Horse and Plow , surrounded by organic gardens and orchards—or  Golden State Cider , whose tap room serves up such favorites as the hibiscus-infused Jamaica. Windsor's  Tilted Shed Ciderworks  is also worth a stop, where you can try smoked or barrel-aged ciders, among other deliciousness.

Taking the farm-to-glass concept to whole new level, small-batch distilleries are blooming in Sonoma County's fertile soil—some offering tastings and tours. Check out Sebastopol's  Spirit Works  (home to famous Sloe Gin); Sonoma's  HelloCello  (the  limoncello , rivals any you'll try in Italy) and Petaluma's  Griffo Distillery  (don't miss the cold-brew coffee liqueur). Point being: There are endless—and endlessly delicous—ways to toast to your time in Sonoma County.
