  • What to Expect in Sri Lanka?

Where to start in Sri Lanka?

Transport in sri lanka, top places to visit in sri lanka, accommodation in sri lanka, general information – sri lanka.

The Capital city of Sri Lanka is Colombo, and other main cities include Kandy, Galle, Trincomalee and Jaffna. The Sri Lankan Rupee is the currency you will be using and the national languages are Sinhalese and Tamil, though you can get around easily by conversing in English. The country has a population of 22 million, and an area of 65’610 square kilometers. The common electricity voltage used across the country is 230 Voltz at 50Hz. If your appliances are 110 Volt, be sure to use a voltage adaptor in order to avoid burning out the cables. The electricity sockets are usually type D (three round pins) or type G (three rectangular pins). A travel adaptor will fit the purpose of different sockets being used for your devices.

How to get to Sri Lanka

By air is the only way to get to Sri Lanka. Direct flights are available from several popular destinations such as London, Paris, Frankfurt, Dubai, Doha, Kuwait, Oman, Dammam, Jakarta, Karachi, Lahore, Melbourne, Sydney, Tokyo, Guanghzou, Seoul, Shanghai, Male, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Dhaka, Kaula Lumpur and more.

The main airport that offers most of the flight connections is Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake. Colombo, Jaffna, Hambantota and Batticaloa are destinations where international airports are present but offer very restricted flight options and poor road connections.

Visa Requirements for Sri Lanka

To enter Sri Lanka, visas can be obtained in advance via the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system by going through the following link: https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/

The ETA is initially valid for 30 days but can be extended for up to 6 months. A 2-day transit visa is given free for all applicants. Apart from that, the visa fees vary from $20-$55 depending on the purpose of your visit, duration of visa and number of entries required. If you are unable to obtain the ETA in advance, visa on arrival is possible at the airport. At present, citizens of Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles are exempted from obtaining an ETA/visa to visit Sri Lanka.

Why visit Sri Lanka?

From a very rough past, Sri Lanka has rapidly developed over the last decade, giving the country a fresh start and making it easily accessible to tourists from across the world. From perfect surf breaks to pristine beaches aligned with coconut palms, scenic hill country, wide variety of wildlife, and its rich historical culture, the fame is for good reason indeed! Not to forget the warm smiles and delicious food! The people of Sri Lanka have been classified by tourists as the friendliest you will come across in most of your travels.

What to expect in Sri Lanka?

If you are travelling to Sri Lanka for the first time, you probably may not know what to expect. There are several things that are different to a standard situation in your home county. However, to put it simply, there are two main things you need to know about in Sri Lanka.

The weather – being a tropical country located on the lines of the equator, high levels of humidity, frequent monsoon rains, and thunderstorms are common in all random parts of Sri Lanka. If you are particular about which coast you’d like to spend most time on, study the monsoons and pick the right time to go to Sri Lanka. From December to April is the peak season for the south and west coast while May to October is peak season on the east coast. Off-season rain should also be expected on random days, but be aware that these won’t last for more than a few hours and are always a welcome cooling solution for hot and humid days.

The roads – compared to other similar Asian countries, Sri Lanka has a good road network and the standards of the roads are especially good – more so on certain routes such as Negombo, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Jaffna. And the scenic views of the hills are of course unmatchable!

The bright lights in the capital city of Colombo is a good place to start. Its waves of fragrant spices clashing against the hot waves of the Indian Ocean make it an ideal place to begin exploring the country that was previously known as ‘Ceylon’. Colombo is currently the trading capital and the most developed part of Sri Lanka – with malls, restaurants, cinemas, markets and much more! Visit the heart of the country and truly understand what Sri Lanka is about.

There is a certain charm about Colombo with its mix of old and new architecture, pushing to the edge of the Indian Ocean. Once you’ve crossed the shore, notice trains full of commuters going up and down the coastline while the waves crash below the rail tracks. Grab a trishaw to the Fort area where colonial infrastructure is prominent – and a popular attraction. Pettah is Colombo’s “bazaar” – a market that is bustling throughout the day and into the late night – where literally everything can be bought, sold or repaired.

Cinnamon Gardens is a more stylish and sophisticated area as compared to Pettah. As the name suggests, it was once an orchard of cinnamon, but today, it is more buildings than cinnamon plants. The National Museum is a must visit for an insight into the country’s history and to understand what Sri Lanka is all about. Galle Face Green is a long, beautiful stretch of green grass parallel to the ocean shore. Every evening it gets crowded with locals looking to catch some fresh air and spend some leisure time with their kids. You will see games of cricket, kites being flown, and children playing catch, as the sun sets low into the Indian Ocean. Stalls of Sri Lankan Street food are lined up along the shore to give locals and foreigners an authentic experience of Sri Lankan food.

The road network in Sri Lanka is quite easy, and although compared to India and Nepal they are relatively quiet, the road rules can get hectic to guests travelling from well developed countries.

Trains are a good way of getting around to popular cities like Colombo, Kandy and Galle – but do expect trains to be crowded up to the doors!

Tuk tuks are available at every nook and corner but be sure to pre determine the price or make sure the meters are working fine before you get into one!

Discovering Rich Heritage

With multiple cities being appointed as the capital of Sri Lanka, a strong history has been developed, and many well-preserved ruins are World Heritage Sites.

  • Dambulla: while being the epicenter to temples such as the Dambulla Cave Temples (incredible structures dating back to the first century BC), it is also one of the busiest trade centers for fruits and vegetables – crucial to the local economy.
  • Habarana is a small town, yet a good place to base yourself if you are planning on exploring Sigiriya Lion’s Rock (a fortress built on the top of a rock, with two giant lion’s feet at its base), Dambulla Cave Temples, as well as National Parks in Kaudulla and Minneriya.
  • Between Kurunegala and Anuradhapura is the beautiful granite structure that was once known as the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress in the 13 th
  • The ancient towns of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are marked as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as they display several well-preserved ancient ruins scattered in parts of the towns. The Quadrangles, Abhayagiri Dagoba, Stupas, Sri Maha Bodhi and Buddha Statues are some of the highlights that should not be missed.

Exploring Exotic Beaches

  • If you are considering the south coast, the beaches of Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa, Hiriketiya and Tangalle are amongst the best.
  • Along the west coast, the best that Sri Lanka has got is Kalpitiya (known for kitesurfing and dolphin watching), and the golden sands of Negombo.
  • The East coasts boasts some of the best beaches in Asia – swim safe clear waters of Trincomalee and Passikuda, as well as the surfer’s paradise of Arugam Bay are a must visit!
  • The North coast of Jaffna, Mannar Island and Delft Island have also got postcard perfect beaches and are the best coast to visit if you want an off-the-beaten path experience.

Indulge in Scenic Views of the Hills

Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Kandy, Hatton, Badulla, Haputale, Bandarawela, and Koslanda are some of the most scenic hill country destinations – offering panoramic views of lush tea plantations, cascading waterfalls, mountains, valleys, and much more! While Kandy and Hatton are closer to Colombo and are a good option if you have got restricted time in your hands, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Haputale offer more pleasant weather conditions as well as unending views that take your breath away! In these parts of the country, one can engage in activities such as trekking, mountain climbing, nature trails, white water rafting, scenic train rides and more.

Wildlife Encounters in Sri Lanka

From over 26 National Parks in Sri Lanka, popular ones such as Yala, Wilpattu, Minneriya and Udawalawe offer camping experiences for guests to get a real feel of what it is like to be in the wild. In addition to that, each of these parks offer jeep safari services that take you into the jungles in search of animals such as elephants, water buffalo, spotted dear, sloth bear, jackals, crocodiles, and much more! These safari’s last for about 3 hours and are best done during the early morning hours or late afternoon / early evening hours. Don’t forget to carry some water, binoculars and of course, a camera.

With tourism being one of the most significant and continuously booming industries in Sri Lanka for several decades, accommodation options are plenty. Budgeted hotels and guesthouses, and 4 and 5 star hotels are available in all corners of the country. For those looking for additional luxury, boutique hotels are a preferred option. If you are touring the country with a group of 10-15 family and friends, private boutique bungalows are also available in popular tourist destinations. Then there are also exclusive properties such as Anantara Tangalle, Wild Coast Tented Loge in Yala, and Ceylon Tea Trails that offer unmatchable, all-inclusive holiday experiences. A lot of wellness resorts that focus on sustainable living, environmentally friendly surroundings and encouraging guests to blend with nature are also up and coming in several parts of Sri Lanka. These resorts also offer Yoga sessions as well as Ayurvedic therapy to relax and rejuvenate mind, body and soul.

Things to keep in mind

  • While the people of Sri Lanka are very warm, welcoming and friendly and may offer to accommodate you in their homes, if you do encounter any trouble, do get in touch with relevant consulates and embassies located in Colombo.
  • Do not trust anyone with your belongings such as your passport, camera gear and money.
  • Be sure to pack breathable shirts, shorts/skirts that cover the knees, swim wear, hat, hiking shoes, flip flops, sunscreen, necessary toiletries, and a mosquito repellent.
  • When entering a temple, you will be asked to remove your shoes and hat, cover your shoulders and knees.
  • Make sure you have travel insurance before you leave your home country and you are aware of how to contact your insurance service provider in case of an emergency.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

If anywhere deserves the title of a true year-round destination, it’s Sri Lanka .

Like neighboring Maldives , its proximity to the equator ensures pleasantly warm, stable temperatures whatever the season. Sri Lanka's annual dual monsoons mean that while one side of the country is taking a soaking, the other is primed for afternoons on the beach.

On top of this is a calendar chock-full of festivals and holidays, offering a unique cultural highlight for visitors almost every month.

So whether you’re looking for the best time to hit the beach , spot wild elephants in a national park , hike to the summit of Adam’s Peak, or simply avoid the tourist crowds, here’s our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Surfer stands on the sand at Narigama beach in Hikkaduwa during sunset, with a board under his arm.

December to March is the best time to hit the beach

Sri Lanka’s high season coincides with the coming of the best weather in the south and west of the country, meaning popular resorts like Hikkaduwa and Mirissa are at their most idyllic, but also busiest. However, the Maha monsoon season (October to January) keeps the East , the North, and the  Ancient Cities  wet.

Sri Lanka is a year-round wildlife-watching destination but generally, the best times to spot elephants, leopards and buffalo align with the main November-to-April tourist season. All the big parks are open and the dry conditions mean that animals start to gather around water holes, making them easier to spot (especially between February and early April).

By December, high season is in full swing, with bathers on beaches along the south and west coast jostling for towel space. The Adam’s Peak pilgrimage season, when pilgrims of all faiths (and the odd tourist) climb the sacred summit near Ella , starts in December and lasts until mid-April.

The end of the month also sees the arrival of Christmas, which is celebrated enthusiastically by Sri Lanka’s Christian community. Followers of other faiths also join in secular events over the holidays – expect over-the-top decorations aplenty.

January sees the peak of the tourist season in Sri Lanka. Crowds may be at their largest, but fine weather in the south and west makes it an appealing time to visit the country. Additionally, many popular towns host major events during the first month of the year.

This includes Duruthu Perahera in  Colombo , a lavish festival of lights, dances, and parades to celebrate the first of Buddha’s visits to Sri Lanka. Elsewhere, Galle 's somewhat more sedate annual literary festival takes over the city's Unesco-protected fort.

Visitor numbers are still high in February, with wintering Europeans baking themselves on the beaches in the dry winter weather. This is a busy month for Sri Lankans, with Independence Day early in the month, commemorated with festivals, parades, fireworks, and sporting events across the nation.

Visitor numbers decline but the festival of Maha Sivarathri in early March (or late February) brings a flurry of activity, with Hindus commemorating the marriage of Shiva to Parvati with all-night vigils and more. It’s the most important day for Shaivites, who comprise the majority of Sri Lanka’s Hindus.

September to October and April are the best times for exploring the whole country

Squeezed between the two main monsoons, Sri Lanka’s two shoulder seasons offer the best weather right across the country, with fewer crowds and lower prices. April, however, does coincide with Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which can cause transport troubles as people move around the country.

This is a good time for trekking in the Hill Country or climbing Sigiriya , with the weather mostly dry but not as hot as in the height of summer.

September, and sometimes August, also sees 200 or more elephants group together for several weeks in one spot in Minneriya National Park . The event, known as "The Gathering" where baby elephants can be spotted too, is considered one of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles.

October can be a bit unpredictable, with the Yala monsoon fading and conditions building towards the Maha monsoon. In many areas, thunderstorms arrive in the afternoons, and rain is common, but there's still good surfing on the east coast. Make sure you add a raincoat to your list of things to pack if you're visiting in October.

Warm and dry across the majority of the country, and outside the prime tourist period, April is a great month to be in Sri Lanka. Although Christians comprise only six percent of Sri Lanka’s population, Christian festivals – including Easter, which usually falls in April – are still celebrated with gusto (don’t be surprised if you see the Easter bunny adorning a few shop windows).

A more significant event in April is Aurudu (New Year), with New Year’s Eve (April 13) and New Year’s Day (April 14) nonreligious holidays. Over the days before and after, buses and trains are jammed as people flee from big cities to home villages.

Ramadan also tends to fall in April or May, with some Muslim-owned businesses closing during daylight hours.

May to August is the b est time to avoid the crowds

Low season in Sri Lanka starts with the coming of the Yala monsoon in May, which pounds the west and south, as well as the Hill Country, through August.

This is the best time for trips to Jaffna in the North or the chilled-out resorts along the east coast, like Arugam Bay , known for their laid-back surf scene. Accommodation prices during this period are generally lower and crowds are thinner.

Despite the Yala monsoon, many must-see festivals take place during this period. Among the best of them is Vesak Poya, a two-day festival in May where colored lights adorn every Buddhist home, shop, and temple. There's also the vibrant Esala Perahera in  Kandy , where thousands of dancers and drummers form a giant procession through the town.

The ongoing monsoon means tourist crowds are scarce through most of the country in June, with the exception of the east coast beaches that avoid the rain. Meanwhile, another major Buddhist event, the Poson Poya, gets underway.

The celebration of the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka sees festivities take place in the temples of Anuradhapura , while, nearby, thousands of white-clad pilgrims ascend the calf-busting 1843 steps to Mihintale’s Dagoba.

For fans of cultural festivals, who aren’t easily disheartened by the odd downpour, July marks a good time to be in Sri Lanka. The key focal point for the country’s Buddhists this month is Esala Perahera, which begins at the end of July and lasts for 10 days.

The Kandy Esala Perahera is legendary, but smaller parades are held across Sri Lanka. Many celebrations feature dancers, drummers, and stilt-walkers who practice all year for the occasion.

Another large-scale procession takes place in Colombo as part of the Hindu celebrations of Aadi Vel, which sees the gilded chariot of Murugan (Skanda), the Hindu god of war, ceremonially hauled through the city’s streets.

August marks the last month of low season, with the rains of the Yala monsoon slowly beginning to ease. To maximize the chance of avoiding the rain, visitors should head north to Jaffna, which plays host to the enormous and spectacular Nallur Festival each August.

The event climaxes on day 24 with parades of juggernaut floats and gruesome displays of self-mutilation by entranced devotees.

Poya (full moon) days

It is worth noting that every poya (full moon) day is a holiday in Sri Lanka, and buses, trains, and accommodation fill up, especially if the full moon falls on a Friday or Monday. No alcohol is supposed to be sold on poya days and many bars close (though some hotels discreetly provide cold beer "under the table").

Culture and customs

As an important stop on ancient trade routes, there’s a great mix of cultural influences present in modern-day Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese Buddhists, followed by Tamils (who are mostly Hindu) and a small amount of Christians and Muslims. Various religious festivals and holy times are celebrated regularly in Sri Lanka, from large nationwide holidays to local village celebrations. As a fairly conservative nation, most locals dress modestly and displays of affection are not considered appropriate in public.

The British influence is still evident in Sri Lanka’s culture, cuisine and buildings. Drinking tea and playing cricket are the most obvious remnants of British colonial rule, although you’ll also find country cottages dotted throughout some rural regions with some serving traditional English fare like roast chicken and beef. Travellers will find that most Sri Lankans, despite having little, are quick to share their food and friendship. Known for being hospitable, generous and kind, when being offered tea or food in someone’s home, it is considered impolite to decline.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan curries are among the hottest in the world, but don’t let that put you off. Fragrant, coconut-based curries packed with chilli, garlic, turmeric and coriander will give your tastebuds a treat.

Being an island, Sri Lanka has access to an amazing array of seafood. Feast on fresh crab, swordfish, lobster and squid - or choose a fiery seafood-based curry.

These egg-filled crepe-like wonders can usually be found at breakfast buffets. Usually made from rice flour and coconut milk batter, they are a Sri Lankan twist on the traditional pancake.

With miles of tea plantations, Sri Lankans have grown accustomed to drinking their popular home-grown cash crop. Tea is served with milk and sugar almost everywhere in Sri Lanka, mainly at breakfast and during the day.

Geography and environment

Situated in the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka lies just under the Indian subcontinent, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. Much of Sri Lanka receives a high level of rainfall during the monsoon season, with the dry northern areas being the exception. Due to the high level of rainfall, tropical evergreen forest proliferates around the country. Despite extensive land clearing for agriculture, there are still pockets of national parks and biosphere reserves around the country that hold much flora and fauna, including herds of wild elephants, deer and a wide range of birds. Sri Lanka’s remaining forests and protected areas are rich in biological diversity and remain popular with tourists looking for wildlife and adventure.

Sri Lanka’s main cities are typically built up, busy and increasingly becoming more multicultural and cosmopolitan. In comparison to Sri Lanka’s fast-paced, city-dwelling residents, many Sri Lankans still live in villages with simple housing and work predominantly in the agriculture and fishing industries.

History and government

Early history.

Sri Lanka was occupied by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years before the arrival of Sinhalese tribal groups in the 6th century BC. Buddhism arrived on the island sometime during the 3rd century BC and as a result, the city of Anuradhapura became the capital and centre of Buddhism. This Buddhist Kingdom endured years of Tamil raids until Anuradhapura was abandoned in favour of Polonnaruwa in the south. By the 12th century, Tamil rulers had a permanent presence in the north, where Hinduism still flourishes today.

The harbours of the south soon became important trading centres for Arab traders but by the 16th century a new wave of foreign influence began with the arrival of the Portuguese, then the Dutch. Sri Lanka’s wealth of cinnamon and geographic trading advantage appealed to the Portuguese, who slowly took over the island until the Dutch drove them out in the early 17th century. Remnants of this time can still be found in modern-day Sri Lanka, with colonial forts, cannons and other ruins dotted throughout the country, especially along the coast. By 1795, the British arrived and captured the island from the Dutch. Sugar, coffee, tea and rubber plantations were soon established by the British, along with Western schools, churches and colleges.

Recent history

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was officially granted its independence in 1948 but continued to maintain relatively good relations with the British. By 1960, Ceylon had the world’s first female prime minister and in 1972, the name Ceylon was replaced with Sri Lanka, which had just become a republic (but remained a member of the Commonwealth). These changes in government and moves towards independence were largely Sinhalese-centric, which created some tension with parts of the Tamil population.

From 1983 to 2009 Sri Lanka endured an intermittent civil war, which resulted in some displacement of people and human rights violations. More recently, parts of Sri Lanka were devastated by the 2004 tsunami, yet Sri Lanka has rebounded with an increasingly stable economy based on agriculture, tourism and telecommunications. With one of the best-performing stock exchanges in the world, Sri Lanka has emerged from conflict, natural disasters and colonisation to become a rising tourist and economic hotspot.

Top 10 spiritual spots in Sri Lanka

1. bodhi tree.

Located at the ancient site of Anuradhapura, this sacred fig tree is said to have grown from a sapling of the Bodhi Tree that Buddha was sitting under when he became enlightened. This holy spot has long been a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankans and is now becoming a place of spiritual interest for visitors too.

2. Dewatagaha Mosque

One of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka, this prayer place for worshippers of Islam has stood in Colombo for hundreds of years. The striking domes and minarets stand out in the Colombo skyline and provide a spiritual epicentre for Sri Lanka’s Muslims.

3. Temple of the Tooth

This Buddhist temple, located in Kandy, is named for the holy relic (said to be Buddha’s tooth) that is housed inside. It's a World Heritage site that has survived bombings and the ravages of time - visit here to see worshippers deep in prayer under the elaborate golden roof.

4. Dambulla Cave Temple

This well-preserved series of cave temples is brimming with paintings and statues that date all the way back to the 1st century. With colourful depictions of Buddha, Sri Lankan kings and various Hindu gods and goddesses, this is one of the most elaborate cave complexes in Asia.

5. Adam’s Peak

Sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims, Adam’s Peak is arguably Sri Lanka’s most popular pilgrimage spot. Surrounded by wildlife reserves, the walking trail leading to the mountain is a stunning walk regardless of religious persuasion. Watching a stirring sunrise from the holy summit is nothing short of magnificent.

6. Polonnaruwa Ruins

These impressive ruins of an ancient kingdom are home to massive palaces, huge statues, imposing temples and an artificial lake. Although historically and culturally important, witnessing orange-robed monks praying at Gal Vihara (a Buddhist rock temple) is a spiritual moment you won’t soon forget.

7. Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock)

This magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site was once a mountain monastery many centuries ago. The rock inscriptions, paintings and ancient ‘graffiti’ show insight into the lives of the monks who lived within the caves and grottoes before King Kasyapa took to the throne and established a capital there.

8. Anuradhapura

The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura are a significant holy place for Sri Lanka Buddhists. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, there are many monasteries surrounding this area of supreme veneration.

9. Munneswaram Temple

This elaborate Hindu temple complex is known for its vibrant festivals in celebration of Navaratri and Sivaratri. During this time, the complex is filled with the buzz of devotees who come to attend daily pujas and bathe in the nearby holy river.

10. Mihintale

If you choose to climb the thousand or so steps to the top of Mihintale’s hill, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and a deeper understanding of Buddhism, as this is the site where Buddhism is said to have originated in Sri Lanka.

Known for its fragrant spices, vibrant fabrics, stunning silver jewellery and one-of-a-kind antiques, it’s difficult to leave Sri Lanka without a backpack full of mementos. From far-flung rural marketplaces to the boutiques and galleries of Galle and Colombo, shopping in Sri Lanka has something for everyone at a relatively low cost.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Sri Lanka

1. Handicrafts

Although available all over the country, Kandy is one of the best places to buy locally-made handicrafts. Choose from handmade brass and silver jewellery, vibrant fabric bags and scarves, and batik wall hangings.

Home to a multitude of plantations and spice gardens, it’s no wonder some of the world’s best spices come from Sri Lanka. Perhaps buy some saffron, cloves, cinnamon, turmeric and cardamom to take home a taste of Sri Lanka with you.

3. Gem stones

If you’re after a low-cost gemstone, Sri Lanka is a top place to pick up a stone at a great price. Birthstones are popular, as are girls' best friends – diamonds! As always, buy from a licensed gem store to guarantee authenticity.

Festivals and events

Vesak festival.

People all over Sri Lanka commemorate Buddha’s birthday by visiting temples, giving alms and singing devotional songs. Simple, luminous paper lanterns are hung outside homes and food is freely distributed to the public via roadside stalls.

Is it safe to visit Sri Lanka?

Usually, Sri Lanka is a safe country to visit, however, recent developments have seen the capital of Colombo and surrounding regions subject to often violent protests and civil unrest. While travelling through Sri Lanka as an LGBTQIA+ is not necessarily dangerous, same-sex sexual activity is still illegal, and we advise that travellers are discreet in public.

Is Sri Lanka accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Travellers with disabilities will likely find it difficult to travel around Sri Lanka. Public transport has not been adapted for those with mobility, visual or auditory limitations, and pavements and roads are often in poor condition. Accommodation, too, is unlikely to be accessible for those in wheelchairs, except perhaps in top-end hotels.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What kind of transport will I use in Sri Lanka?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Hire a bike and pedal around ancient cities full of fascinating ruins for a fun and interactive way to learn about Sri Lanka’s deep history.

Experience some of the world's most beautiful train journeys in the hill country of Sri Lanka.

Tuk Tuks are the best and cheapest way to make your way around Sri Lanka's towns and cities.

Jump in a jeep for a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka's national parks.

What to wear in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is warm. Sri Lanka is very warm. Sri Lanka will have you sweating unless you’re up visiting the tea plantations in the hills, so light, breathable clothing is essential. Whatever you do, don’t wear any clothing depicting the Buddha – this can get you arrested, as can having a Buddha tattoo.

Does my trip to Sri Lanka support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Sri Lanka directly support our foundation partner, Zero Plastic.

Zero Plastic aims to reduce plastic waste in Sri Lankan communities through education and volunteer programs. Donations from our trips help them raise awareness for the impact of plastic on the environment and local wildlife and reduce plastic pollution at the UNESCO-listed Sigiriya (and surrounding communities).

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Train through the Sri Lankan tea plantations

  • Best of Sri Lanka
  • Tea, Temples and Tropics
  • Ultimate Family Adventure
  • Cycling in rural Sri Lanka

Laid back island life in full colour

Explore rolling tea plantations, forests punctuated with ancient palace and temple ruins, and tropical beaches where you can leave your footprints and worries behind.

Sri Lanka may be a relatively small island, but it has everything you could possibly want from a holiday. Lush green hills carpeted with tea plantations, where vibrant accents of orange and pink denote the presence of tea pickers hard at work. Vast swathes of golden sand, lined not only with coconut palms but also stilt fishermen posing for photographs as the sun dips below the horizon. And dreamy cloud forests dotted with the ancient ruins of palaces and Buddhist temples, just waiting to be explored. It's all here, and so much more.

Sri Lanka is an infectiously friendly country. Never mind your photographs, souvenirs and sun tan, the main thing you'll be bringing home with you from a holiday here is the contagious smile that is going around the island. There's a lovely laid back and welcoming way of life that accompanies the exquisite beauty all around, and you'll remember the people you meet just as much as the places you stay. Speaking of which, there's a staggering array of beautiful boutique hotels full of character, suitable for all budgets, to take you on a comfortable journey back in time without compromising on the luxuries of modern day life.

One of the joys of a holiday to Sri Lanka is that you don't need very long here to see a lot. In just a week or two you can climb the ancient rock fortress, ride a train through the hills and explore tea garden trails, stumble upon crowds of wild elephants in the national parks, and still have time to relax on the beach at the end.

When to go to Sri Lanka

Find out the best time to visit Sri Lanka with our month by month guide.

January is the perfect time to visit different regions in Sri Lanka, temperatures will be warm and basking in sunshine, meaning the cultural triangle, beaches, national parks and hill country could all be visited during January. However, the central hills will be cooler than other regions due to their altitude.

February is much like January, with long sunny days and calm seas. Visitors travelling during this month have a higher chance of spotting sperm and blue whales.

March is considered the best time to visit the central hills, although cooler than other regions in Sri Lanka there is less chance of rains in March.

Typically April, is the hottest and driest month of the year, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees if you're travelling to Golden Triangle regions. It is a great month to head to Sri Lanka's beautiful beaches, with clear skies and long sunny days.

  • Top Tip: when sightseeing visit in the mornings and evenings as you will avoid the hottest part of the day.

In May, the south is humid and increasingly hot whilst hill country is cooler with a higher chance of rainfall. We recommend travelling to the North and east of the island during May witnessing the unique history and culture of Sri Lanka.

  • Vesak Poya, takes place during the first full moon, celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha.

During June, temperatures in the south continue to be increasingly hot and humid as the southwest monsoon blows through the country. Southern regions will experience short sharp showers which tend to pass quite quickly.

As the summer holidays commence in July, Sri Lanka is in peak season, with temperatures staying around 30 degrees all month. If you're looking to explore Sri Lanka and visit different areas July is a great time to visit.

In August, the warm days continue with temperatures remaining in the high twenties. All in all it is a great month to travel especially if you want to witness culture, between August and September the Kandy Perahera festival takes place, a grand procession celebrating the 'sacred tooth' of Buddha.

All in all September is a great month to travel especially if you want to witness culture, between August and September the Kandy Perahera festival takes place, a grand procession celebrating the 'sacred tooth' of Buddha.

October brings with it the monsoon rains which affect the whole country, in saying this the weather remains warm and sunny. The monsoon can be unpredictable, rains can be heavy, sporadic or not come at all it is impossible to forecast.

In November the monsoon continues, with conditions affecting the whole country.

During December the monsoon rains can continue, however the southern and western coasts dry out and become warm and dry. The monsoon rains, means during December the landscapes become lush and full, meaning it is a beautiful time to explore the more rural areas of Sri Lanka.

Crabs are a major income earner for Sri Lanka’s fishing industry, but most are exported. This high-profile restaurant rectifies this loss by celebrating the crustaceans in variations ranging from Singaporean…

Or if you prefer something lower key… then go to Buba Beach in Mount Lavinia, With candlelit tables right on the sandy beach, this seafood pub is a hidden treat. In the heat of the day you can retreat under the grove of palm trees; at night let the sky open overhead and the starlight rain…!

If you happen to be in Colombo on a Saturday, then the Good Market is a must! This organic and artisan food market is held in the northeast parking lot of the Colombo Racecourse and attracts a range of high-quality vendors. Breads, prepared foods, organic fruit and veg, smoothies, snacks…

Another must visit specially if you are into antiques is PLATE, an engrossing treasure of a store selling antiques, old photos, art, books and more in a genteel, wood-panelled setting. Also has a busy photo studio.

For those who a fans of BAWA, then the Geoffrey Bawa house is a must, at the end of a quiet little street in Colombo, is the house where the renowned architect Bawa lived from 1960 to 1970. The house combines his usual love for traditional local forms with the stark white architectural… For those seeking a peaceful place for meditation amidst all the chaos, visit the Seema Malakaya Meditation Centre…One of Colombo’s most photographed sights is on an island on the east side of the South Beira Lake. This small but captivating meditation centre was designed by Geoffrey Bawa in 1985 and is run by Gangaramaya.

October 19, 2023 – Touring in Colombo –

Today, let’s explore more of the city of Colombo!

All around downtown Colombo 1, in the Fort Area, there are stunning monumental buildings dating back to the Dutch and British era of Sri Lanka. Back then (Colombo was declared the capital of Ceylon in 1815 by the British) this area was a real fort as it was surrounded by the sea on two sides and had a moat on the landward sides

Fort area of Colombo is packed with stunning old colonial-era architecture masterpieces that have been restored with a mix of modern structures. The Old Dutch Hospital is a good example of this and well worth a visit. Also, this area houses the President´s House and various ministry and governmental buildings.

This is a rather compact and small area, perfect for a stroll. Start or end your walk at the beautiful Old Galle Buck Lighthouse and enjoy the nice view of the Colombo shore and harbor.

Other highlights in the Fort area that you should not miss are:

  • Old Galle Buck Lighthouse
  • Sambodhi Chaitiya dagoba/ stupa
  • The Clock Tower
  • Central Point
  • Lloyd´s Buildings
  • St Peter´s Church
  • Cargills Main Store

Pettah, Colombo 11, is one of the oldest districts of Colombo and walking around in this area is a real adventure full of sound, smells, and people watching. Plunge into the madness of shops, stalls, and markets. In between, you also see some religious buildings like mosques and churches.

Temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil Also called Captain’s Garden Kovil, this is Colombo´s oldest Hindu Temple. The South-Indian inspired architecture of this temple, as well as the beautiful and bright paintings, and detailed artwork, especially in the ceiling, is impressive.

It is pretty tiring walking around Colombo in the heat, and the tuk-tuks are EVERYWHERE and really easy to find! They are the main transportation for both locals and tourists in Colombo, and they are also a lot of fun.

After your exploring return to the hotel to wind down.

Captivating and enigmatic, this tropical tear-drop island is bursting with diverse and often unexpected treasures.

Perhaps best known for the beach resorts that line its extensive coast, Sri Lanka is also a culture lover’s paradise. There are rock temples and fortresses, ruins of ancient and sacred cities, and relics of a colonial age. And if that’s not quite enough to tempt you, Sri Lanka also has a naturally spectacular interior that’s home to rolling tea plantations, and wildlife-rich parks and reserves where elephants, leopards, crocodiles and sloth bears roam free.

Sri Lanka holidays take on a slower pace. This is an island where time takes on a different meaning; it may take a little longer to get from A to B, but that only adds to its charm. It gives you more time to take in your surroundings and discover the country from a local’s perspective as your guide proudly regales you with tales of their homeland.

Whether you’re seeking a beach escape or a bespoke Sri Lanka adventure, talk to us and we'll help create the right Sri Lanka holiday for you.

Udawalawe Jeep Safari & Elephant Transit Home

Founded in 1995, the Elephant Transit Home is a haven for orphaned or injured elephant calves who are rehabilitated back to full health before being returned to the wild. Great lengths are taken to minimize contact between the baby elephants, their caregivers and visitors but you can enjoy watching them stamp their feet impatiently as they wait for their food and relish in the fact that once old enough to survive alone, they’ll be free to roam the national park once more. After a delicious lunch in a local restaurant, hop into your private jeep and get ready to explore the Udawalawe National Park, a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of nearby Udawalawe Reservoir. Infamous for its large population of elephants, have your camera at the ready as you spot herds of these majestic creatures feeding, playing and bathing in waterholes as well as an abundance of other mammals, reptiles and birds.

• Duration: half day • Time: midday to 6pm • Daily departures • Operates year round • Private experience • Available for guests on a car and driver itinerary staying in Udawalawe, Hambantota, Tangalle and Yala • Available for guests staying at hotels in Tangalle, Hambantota, Galle, Koggala and Weligama

Bustling Colombo is packed with unmissable sights and you’ll discover the most compelling of them on this private full-day visit. The well-thought-out itinerary includes a blend of historic sites and contemporary attractions, along with some that are both, such as the Dutch Hospital, the oldest building in the Colombo Fort area, which has been repurposed as a stylish shopping and dining destination. Other highlights include the Galle Face Promenade, which runs the length of the city’s celebrated seaside park; Sambodhi Chaithya, a Buddhist shrine that’s a fascinating example of 1950s architecture; and Nelum Pokuna Art Street, a colourful open-air market where local artists showcase and sell their work. Hike Pidurangala Rock

Climbing Sigiriya Rock is a Sri Lanka rite of passage, however, as with scaling any iconic viewpoint – once you’ve reached the top, it’s not part of the landscape that you’re viewing. The almost-200-metre-high Pidurangala Rock lies just to the north of its more famous neighbour and has some pretty epic views from its summit (which, like Lion Rock, is reached by man-made paths and staircases). The best times to climb are sunrise and sunset when the shifting light casts dramatic shadows across the landscape, and – if you are lucky – creates dramatic skies of many colours.

Duration: half day • Daily departures from Habarana, Sigiriya, Kandalama, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla • Operates year-round • Private experience

Village Cooking Experience

The cuisine of Sri Lanka has been shaped over centuries, influenced by Arab traders and European settlers, and trying the spice-enriched specialities – whether from a high-end restaurant or a street hawker – is a staple experience during a visit to the island. You’ll buy your produce from a village vendor in the company of your host; they’ll show you the essential ingredients used in traditional cooking and select the freshest vegetables that will be used to create their culinary masterpieces. In a wattle-and-daub hut that’s surrounded by paddy fields, your host will whip up a range of flavourful and authentic curries that you’ll get to enjoy at the end of the morning.

Mangrove Conservation Project Visit

Koggala Lagoon is in Sri Lanka’s southern province, where a wide range of wildlife live, and small villages dot the shoreline. It’s home to a large mangrove biome with eleven mangrove species and a high level of biodiversity. Many of the mangroves were destroyed yet vital habitat restoration has been underway since 2010, led by the Wildlife and Ocean Resource Conservation and supported by the DER Touristik Foundation, Kuoni’s parent company.

On this half-day experience, a private transfer will collect you from your hotel and take you to Koggala Lagoon. You’ll meet the team who’ll provide an overview of the conservation work and the mangrove ecosystem at Koggala, beginning with a look at the plant nursery. Mangroves are vital plants that grow in water, tolerating conditions that most plants can’t survive in, thanks to their ability to remove salt. Crucially, mangroves absorb twice as much carbon dioxide as tropical rainforests, helping maintain good water quality, filter pollutants, and protect shorelines from erosion.

After an introduction to the science behind the mangrove growing and planting techniques, you’ll board a boat to venture out onto the lagoon to study the mangroves, observing the local wildlife that live here, with birdlife soaring overhead, including herons and hawks. You’ll have the chance to plant seedling mangroves following a successful technique that other organisations involved in the restoration of mangrove swamps around the world have adopted.

Where is Sri Lanka? The tear drop-shaped island of Sri Lanka is located in the heart of the Indian Ocean and is separated from the south-east coast of India by the Gulf of Munnar and the Palk Strait. Sri Lanka's Bandaranaike International Airport is located just outside Colombo and close to the beach resort of Negombo. It can be reached from the UK by a direct flight. It’s also just an hour and a half by air from the Maldives’ capital, Male making a culture and beach combo holiday a breeze.

Independent touring No two holidays to Sri Lanka are the same. They can be culture focused, be all about spotting wildlife, getting out and getting active or a bit of all of the above. Our car and driver option is ideal if you’re looking to create your own itinerary, to see what you want to see, when you want to see it. It’s flexible, so though your driver/guide will pick you up each morning and follow your itinerary before dropping you off at your chosen accommodation, you can choose to amend your itinerary at any time, as long as you still make it to your next hotel.

Cinnamon Air If you’re looking for a luxurious experience, avoid the roads entirely and fly to your chosen destination. Cinnamon Air offers daily domestic flights from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport to a selection of Sri Lanka’s most popular destinations. The flights have been synchronized to coincide with the arrival and departure schedules of international airlines. This means connecting your flights is easy and convenient with minimum time spent waiting around. You can of course add domestic flights at any point during your itinerary and there is even the possibility to charter flights to suit your own itinerary.

History & heritage Sri Lanka was once a country of successive kingdoms, from the Anuradhapura era (437 BC to 1017 AD) to the Kingdom of Kandy (1591 to 1815). The island’s central region is where you can discover the incredible ancient cities, citadels, sacred Buddhist temples and fortresses that make up the world-famous Cultural Triangle. The southern-most point of the triangle is the highlands city of Kandy, a city so rich in heritage it is known as Sri Lanka’s cultural capital.

Wildlife From Wilpattu in the northwest and Minneriya in central Sri Lanka to world-famous Yala on the south-east coast, Sri Lanka’s National Parks are rich in flora and fauna, providing you with the opportunity to experience the island’s wild side. We love how close Minneriya is to the major sights of the Cultural Triangle – it means that you can get a good balance of heritage, history and nature in just one region. It is particularly known for the vast numbers of elephants that pass through the park as they make their way along the elephant corridor. If you are more of a big cat fan then head to southern Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park, which has the world’s highest concentrations of leopards.

Beaches It’s often Sri Lanka’s beaches that first spring to mind… this little island does have some magnificent stretches of golden sand. The south-west coast is especially popular, with resorts such as Negombo and Bentota providing an excellent choice of beautiful hotels from old colonial favourites to modern resorts with extensive facilities. The district of Trincomalee and the resort town of Passikudah on the east coast provide a quieter option, slightly off the tourist trail. The sloping beaches and largely sheltered bays make the east coast an excellent choice for families, while the handful of luxury properties makes it an unbeatable honeymoon setting.

Diving & snorkelling Sri Lanka’s 1000-mile coastline is dotted with fantastic dive sites, in particular a number of wrecks that are rich in marine life. The warm waters are inviting and the visibility ranges from 10 to 25 metres at its best. The island’s varied climate means the weather and sea conditions on one side of the island can often be very different from the other. The diving season on the south and west coast typically runs from November to April while on the east coast it’s from May to October.

sri lanka tours october 2023

With its 1,340km coastline, traces of ancient civilisation, colourful culture and delicious food, there are many things to keep you occupied while on holiday in Sri Lanka.

• A safari in Yala National Park brings the chance to see leopards, as well as elephants, crocodiles and sloth bears

• Take to the waters around Trincomalee , Mirissa or Kalpitiya to spot whales and dolphins

• Marvel at Anuradhapura , the first sacred capital of Sri Lanka, where the extensive ruins are UNESCO-protected

• Cool off in the “hill country” , where you can still see colonial-era trains making their way through tea plantations and rice paddy fields

When to visit

The island is affected by two separate monsoon seasons, which can mean different conditions across the island throughout the year. The main southwest monsoon brings rain to the west, southwest and hill country from April to September, while the less severe northeast monsoon makes the east coast wettest from November to December. In the central highlands, summers are hot and winters mild. The most popular travel season is December to March; the best value is May to August.

What to pack

Temperatures in most parts of the island will rarely drop below 26C, so pack light and airy clothing. It’s a fairly relaxed destination, well used to tourism, but with so many religions practiced, respectful conservatism is also advisable. All visitors to Buddhist and Hindu temples should be appropriately dressed, so take a cover-up, and your shoes must be removed to enter them.

Areas of Sri Lanka

The popular southwest coast of the island has myriad resorts along its golden sands that can be found on a beach holiday , while the tea plantations in the cooler climate of the hills display evidence of the British colonial lifestyle amid lush landscapes. Once war-torn but now a hub of development, the quieter beaches of the east await a fresh flow of visitors, and in the centre of the island, ruined cities of dynasties gone by await rediscovery. Most Sri Lanka holidays involve touring and this is the most effective way to see all of the highlights.

The Cultural Triangle

Sri Lanka’s “cultural triangle” of the north-central part of the country is generally said to include the three great Sinhalese capitals of Kandy , and ruined Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa . Nearby Mihintale is revered as where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka, while Sigiriya is known as Lion Rock, towering over the surrounding plains. The Buddhist cave temples of Dambulla are another must-see in the area, decorated inside with myriad sculptures and murals. Lastly, a tour of the area also includes 12-metre tall Aukana Buddha, the most perfectly preserved ancient statue in the country, carved out of a single rock in the 5th century.

Hill country

Sri Lanka’s “hill country” is possibly one of the most beautiful parts of Sri Lanka. It was cultivated by the British for tea production and became their retreat from the heat of the lowlands. The area is breathtaking in its terrain and greenery, peppered by old-fashioned trains, half-timbered guesthouses, Gothic churches and given a colourful twist by the saris and temples of the Hindu Tamil plantation workers. At the heart of tea-growing country is Nuwara Eliya , a quaint corner of the world and the likely start point for a trip to Horton Plains , a photo-grabbing plateau over 2,000 metres high with the beautiful backdrop of Sri Lanka’s second- and third-highest mountains, Kirigalpotta and Totapola .

sri lanka tours october 2023

Once popular, but hit hard during the civil war, this was a no-go zone. Fast forward a few years and hotels are opening again in this beautiful area with Passekudah Bay a new hotspot. Slightly sleepier is the golden beach of Kalkudah Bay , while Trincomalee (or ‘Trinco’) is a main east-coast hub, packed with faded colonial charm and colourful temples, including Koneswaram Temple , perched on Swami Rock . With its superb deep-water harbour, Trinco was historically an important stopping off point for traders, and now for tourists, en route to beaches that go on for miles, such as Kuchchaveli, Uppuveli and Nilaveli. Also on the east coast, is Batticaloa , where the Dutch first settled and much further south is Arugam Bay , or A-Bay, a big favourite with surfers.

South coast

Home to the lively towns such as Tangalle and Galle , the area is also still reassuringly rural, with coconut farming, rice cultivation and fishing. Close to Tangalle is Rekawa , whose beach is Sri Lanka’s premier site for turtle-watching. The old port of Galle is the island’s fourth biggest city and its best example of a preserved colonial town, well worth a look before heading off to the beaches of Weligama , Unawatuna and Mirissa . Sri Lanka’s iconic stilt fisherman also hail from this stretch of coastline.

sri lanka tours october 2023

It’s highly developed and home to the capital Colombo , the international airport, and the popular resort of Negombo , once the cinnamon hub of the Dutch, now a usual first or last stop on a tourist itinerary. Head south from Colombo and you hit Sri Lanka’s most famous – and largest - resorts, such as Kalutara, Beruwala and Bentota, or for something sleepier, head north of Colombo to the Kalpitiya peninsula with relatively unpopulated beaches, great dolphin-watching and the wildlife of Wilpattu National Park .

Food here is a mix of Indian and southeast Asian inspiration, but with a distinctly Sri Lankan twist - which can be discovered on an all-inclusive holiday . Rice and curry, usually made with coconut milk and infused with chillies and spices, is the default meal of locals. ‘Appam’, or hoppers – a snack of pancakes made from a rice and coconut milk batter - are just as ubiquitous, as is ‘kottu roti’, chopped up flatbreads with vegetables, egg or meat with plenty of spices. Try ‘indiappa’, or ‘string hoppers’ for breakfast – locals love these nests of steamed rice vermicelli noodles with dhal or curry.

Sinhalese is the most dominant ethnicity, with their roots in the island’s early Buddhist civilization – across the island, ancient temples and domed stupas of varying sizes are said to enshrine relics of Buddha. The Tamil population of the north enjoys a vibrant Hindu culture and Muslim heritage stems from Arab traders of the 8th century, while the Portuguese, Dutch and British have left their mark here too. Look out for performances of exquisite Kandyan dancing and remember that alcohol is not supposed to be sold on full-moon (poya) days.

Protected parks and reserves make up around 15% of the landscape. The UNESCO-listed Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka’s last undisturbed pocket of tropical rainforest, while at Rekawa Beach near Tangalle from April to September, there is a chance to see green, hawksbill and occasionally leatherback turtles. Elephants can be seen in most national parks, but especially in Uda Walawe . Sri Lankan leopards were historically found in all habitats, but these days their numbers are diminished and the likely places to see them are Yala National Park and Wilpattu National Park . The best whale and dolphin watching is from Mirissa, Trincomalee, or Kalpitiya.

sri lanka tours october 2023

Adventurers, traders and tourists have been coming to this teardrop-shaped island south of India for many years, with more than 2,000 years of recorded history. The earliest Sri Lankan civilisation was Sinhalese, based around the city of Anuradhapura. Latterly, Sri Lanka was an important staging post for Indian Ocean trade and the coming of the Europeans meant the strategic importance of Sri Lanka was elevated; it was a British colony from 1802 until independence in 1948. From the start of the 1980s, a civil war was fought in the north and east between the Sri Lankan Army and the Tamil Tigers until a government victory in 2009.

If you enjoy history, then Mauritius holidays may be of interest, where you can visit Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, which is the third oldest botanical garden in the world and opened in 1770.

Attractions

sri lanka tours october 2023

This sprawling seaside city is worth more than a passing glance on the way to or from the airport. Try a boutique hotel, take a trishaw ride to get a feel for the city’s leafy parks and tree-lined streets, or check out the bustle of the Pettah bazaar district . Explore the Old Dutch Hospital, a colonial-era complex dating back to the early 1600s now home to chic shops, cafes and restaurants. The bomb-afflicted Fort district, Colombo’s former administrative and financial centre, is packed with colonial architecture, quite naturally deserted during the civil war, now starting to come slowly back to life.

Anuradhapura

The sacred city of Anuradhapura was said to be established around a cutting from the ‘tree of enlightenment’, the Buddha's fig tree, brought there in the 3rd century BC. Anuradhapura flourished as the first political and religious capital of the early Sinhalese civilization for 1,300 years, but was abandoned after an Indian invasion in 993 and left to be overgrown by dense jungle. Its scale is incredible and the detail and expertise of its architecture fascinating, with vast monasteries, deep water tanks, palaces and huge dagobas or stupas, three of which are said to be the largest the world has ever seen and would have been excelled in scale at the time only by the pyramids of Egypt.

Polonnaruwa

This ancient city had its heyday in the 12th century when Vijayabahu established the heart of the Sinhalese kingdom here. It was work his successors continued, going on to create one of the great urban centres of south Asia. Its life was shorter than that of Anuradhapura, when invaders from southern India meant the city was abandoned to the jungle and not rediscovered for 700 years.

Dambulla Rock Cave Temple

Through a series of five grottoes, you’ll unearth the Sinhalese Buddhist artworks of mystical statues, paintings of gods and goddesses and walls decorated with some of the finest murals in the country, dating back to the 1st century BC. Prepare for a bit of a climb - the temples are halfway up the rock itself, with a series of concrete steps, but the views over the plains and rocky outcrops along the way are worth it.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Also known as Lion Rock , this 180-metre granite peak was where King Kassapa I had a fortress built in the 5th century. If you can face the climb of it today, you can see how it dominates the jungle from all sides and is surrounded by an extensive network of gardens and reservoirs.

Sri Lanka’s second city after Colombo, Kandy is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, the country’s most important religious shrine. The Buddhist temple said to house the relic of the tooth of the Buddha sits in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy. The city dates back to the early 13th century, and clung onto its freedom after the Portuguese and Dutch had taken the rest of the island, managing to preserve Kandyan customs, culture and architecture. Despite its feisty defence, the city fell to the British in 1815.

Nuwara Eliya

Often referred to as Little England, because the British brought over so many of their ways and culture when they started the tea plantations. The Nuwara Eliya District stretches to 1,868m high and is considered the most important location for tea production in the country; it’s also overlooked by the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, Pidurutalagala .

Horton Plains National Park

Located in Sri Lanka’s hill country, this is a key highlight for trekkers, as an early morning hike takes you up to a beautiful plateau of grasslands usually only visible before 10am because of the fog that settles in the late morning.

Muthurajawela Sanctuary

Glide through the waters and past mangrove woodlands to discover the wonders of the lagoon and witness monkeys swinging in trees as crocodiles move stealthily through the water.

Learn more about the city’s colourful history and Portuguese and Dutch influences. Visit Galle Fort, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and dates back to 1588, and discover the sleepy streets and charming houses of the old town that have been renovated into shops and cafes, giving a new air of sophistication to the old town.

Yala National Park

Yala has the highest concentration of leopards in the world. It covers a vast area, split into five “blocks”, of which only two are open to visitors - private vehicles are not allowed; you must pay to hire one of the designated jeeps. There are only 30-50 leopard roaming in the main block that tourists can visit, but there’s plenty of other wonderful animals to see too, from prehistoric-looking birds, to little black sloth bears; dainty deers to lumbering elephants.

Since the 1970s, Arugam Bay has been a surfers’ paradise and is still considered one of the world’s 10 best surf points; best time for surfing is April- November.

This is one of the country’s key spots for whale watching, with excellent chances of seeing blue and sperm whales close to shore, good snorkeling, a charming beach and low-key guesthouses and cafes.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide 2023

When to go, how to get around & how much to budget.

Exploring Sri Lanka is a thrilling and fascinating adventure, filled with excitement, fun, and enjoyment – but the process of planning a trip there can be quite the opposite! So I’m here to make your life a little bit easier with my Sri Lanka Travel Guide. Here’s the only travel guide you’ll need to plan your trip to Sri Lanka!

When I was organising our trip to Sri Lanka, it struck me how hard it was to find out all the information I needed. Bus and train timetables were impossible to track down, and I couldn’t find reliable accommodation recommendations or figure out what I needed to budget. Immediately after we left the country, I vowed to write a travel guide for Sri Lanka containing everything I learned while planning the trip and making our way around the country.

So here it is – the ultimate travel guide to Sri Lanka! Everything you need to know when planning your trip around Sri Lanka. Travel, eat and drink with the locals, and completely immerse yourself in Sri Lankan culture.

While you’re here, don’t forget to read my 10-day itinerary and budget.

Planning Your Itinerary

Preparing for your trip,  the best time to visit sri lanka.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide

The top of Ella Rock

There are two monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka that affect different parts of the country. On the southwest coast, the monsoon season runs from May to September . On the east coast and north, it runs between October and February .

For the rest of the year, the weather is dry and sunny throughout the country, with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees in coastal regions and 18 in the highlands.

We visited in September when the popular beach areas in the south and southwest were still being hit with monsoons. We stuck mainly to the highland areas where the weather was better and had sunshine for the whole trip. If you are a budget traveller, hitting places during off-peak or shoulder seasons is a fantastic way to reduce costs. Especially in Sri Lanka, you can find discounts on accommodation and Western restaurants for up to 50% off their regular price.

Packing For Your Trip

Check out my backpacker’s packing guide to see my favourite things to carry with me. I recommend packing cubes, a waterproof phone case, the bite pen, a travel towel and a sleeping bag liner from this list. Along with camera equipment, as there are great photo-taking opportunities here.  Along with these, you should also pack the following on your trip to Sri Lanka:

  • Modest Clothing: You’ll need to dress more conservatively in Sri Lanka than other backpacker destinations in SEA. Bring clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for days when you are sightseeing or travelling from place to place.  My go-to outfit when we were travelling here was a light dress past my knees with a light shirt on top. It’s likely to be quite humid, so breathable fabrics are best.
  • Sturdy Shoes: Sri Lanka has great hikes and climbs, so bring trainers. Any regular workout trainers will be fine – but they will get covered in dust or mud. So opt for dark colours.
  • Bug Spray & SPF: It gets hot and sticky in Sri Lanka, and there can be quite a few mosquitos. Bring some high-strength DEET with you if you are prone to getting bit.

Organising Your Visa

Sri Lanka offers visitors from most countries a Visa On Arrival (VOA), giving you 30 days in the country. If you want to stay longer, you must extend your visa in Colombo.

How to apply : You can either wait until you enter the country to get a VOA or else  apply online  and skip the queues.

Fees : 50 USD if you apply online at the above link, or 60 USD if you get your VOA at the airport or port.

Limitations : You need to provide proof of onward travel to enter Sri Lanka – you will be asked to provide this at check-in or when boarding your flight.

Read my guide to Visa requirements across all South East Asian Countries.

Managing your money.

The Sri Lankan currency is the Rupee (LKR), but you can pay for some things in USD, like entry fees to attractions. You can find money changers in Colombo and popular tourist areas. Like anywhere else in SE Asia, the usual scams can be found here, so be very careful when changing money.

ATMs are pretty accessible, although they won’t be everywhere, so it’s always good to have enough cash with you. We mainly carried Rupee and had around $100 each in cash for entry fees.

We’ve encountered so many scams on our travels that we never use money changers. Instead, use our Transferwise  cards, which give us great rates worldwide.

Tip: Always look for the MRP (maximum retail price) when shopping . There will be a small black bar code somewhere on the item you want, and it will give you the maximum price of the item. You will be charged more for everything if you don’t know the price!

Responsible Travel in Sri Lanka

There are a few things to be careful of when travelling in Sri Lanka; the exploitation of children, animals, and wealthy tourists is rife there. As with many other countries in Asia, there are many animal parks and elephant parks that bill themselves as orphanages and are ethical when they are not. Pinnewala is the primary example of this, and I would avoid this park at all costs.

Minneriya National Park is not as bad as Pinnewala. Still, the number of people here often outnumbers the animals, and drivers tend to beep their horns and drive at the animals to get them closer to tourists. There have been many complaints from people who have been to this park, who were shaken and upset by how the animals were treated. Yala National Park seems to be ok if you would like to go to an animal park. Here is a guide to travelling responsibly in Sri Lanka

Getting Around in Sri Lanka

Arriving at colombo airport.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide

Waiting for the train in Sri Lanka

To get from the Airport to your guesthouse, use the app Pick Me, Sri Lanka’s version of Uber. There will be taxis and buses available outside of arrivals, but these will cost quite a bit more, and you also have the stress of having to haggle for your fare. Download Pick Me before your flight, and you can get a fairly-priced taxi once you land. I like to use the ATM when I arrive and get my SIM card sorted ASAP!

We flew into Colombo Bandaranayake International Airport on the west coast of Sri Lanka. This is the most popular entry point for tourists as it’s easy to get to the beaches and the highlands from here.

There is storage at Colombo airport where you can leave your bag for 6-8 USD per day. You can store them at the ‘Left Luggage Counter’ on the departure outer porch. It’s open 24 hours. We do this a lot if we’re in a country for less than two weeks – it’s cheap and makes travelling around much easier. If you’re travelling by local bus and train, you’ll want to have as little stuff as possible, so I definitely recommend leaving things here if you can.

Getting Around

There are many ways to travel around Sri Lanka, depending on how much time and money you have.

Many travellers we met hired a driver for their whole stay. This is the most expensive option, but it allows you to travel at your leisure. While it is undoubtedly more comfortable and convenient, public transport journeys were some of our trip’s best and most memorable parts.  I would have hated to miss them! Your driver can also double as a travel guide while in Sri Lanka, as some companies offer this service. You can hire a driver through a tour company online or through your accommodation once you arrive in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide

The train ride back to Colombo

Travelling by train around Sri Lanka was the highlight of our trip. Although it takes longer than hiring a driver, I still would choose to take the train. Our favourite train ride was the famous journey between Kandy and Ella, which you can read about here.

There are three classes of train travel, and we mostly opted for third-class seats as they were the cheapest fare. One thing to be aware of is that there are two types of third-class tickets – unreserved and reserved. Unreserved 3rd class tickets can be bought at a train station on the day and are usually the last tickets available. These do not guarantee you a seat, and the carriages are generally packed full of people – there was even a band on the train we were on. Third-class reserved tickets guarantee an assigned seat in a carriage where no one can stand. When you’re on a train for 6 + hours, this will make a big difference!

I would highly recommend you book your tickets before you go so you don’t end up with third-class unreserved seats. We booked ours through 12Go.Asia .

To learn more about timetables, prices, and how to book trains in Sri Lanka, visit ‘ The Man In Seat 61 ‘—the best site for information about train travel. Mark Smith, who started the website as a hobby, writes incredibly detailed and informative reviews of train journeys worldwide. We use it whenever we need to travel by train, a nd it was really helpful for our trips to Sri Lanka (and great for India, too!).

Hop on a local bus.

sri lanka tours october 2023

Catching a bus in Sri Lanka is a very interesting experience! Bus stops are often not marked with a sign so you have to ask around to find out where to stand. Many buses will pass you before the right one eventually comes along. If you ask when the next bus is due, you often get met with a blank stare and told to wait, and it will turn up. The experience is a lot of fun, though, and it will save you so much money. Tip:  The buses don’t always come to a complete halt, so it’s best to be ready near the door when you’re about to get off!

For shorter journeys, take a taxi.

The Pick Me app is the Sri Lankan version of Uber and is excellent for getting around cities and towns cheaply. This app takes away the hassle of haggling with cab drivers. It gives you a set price for each fare, which you can pay by card in the app, or cash at the end of your trip.

Rent your own TukTuk

sri lanka tours october 2023

Driving in Sri Lanka can be tricky, and you will need a local permit to drive here. Renting from TukTuk Rental is the best and easiest way to do this, as they will sort all your permits required for Sri Lanka. You can hire from Colombo, or you can get your Tuk Tuk delivered to you for an added fee. Use my code ‘STEPHMYLIFETRAVEL’ for a discount on your rental!

You will also need insurance .  As always, never travel to any country without insurance . You never know when you may need it, and it is my non-negotiable when travelling.

Budgeting For Your Trip

Sri Lanka can be an incredibly cheap country to travel around. Lunch can be found for a dollar, a double room for under $10, while a local bus is only $0.50. However, some entry fees can kill your budget, costing up to $30 per person. For this reason, I wouldn’t just visit anything for the sake of it.

Click here to read about where we went and what we spent during our 10 days in Sri Lanka.

Daily budget for sri lanka  ($usd).

Accommodation : $10-15 per night for a basic double room en suite with breakfast. $40 for a nice hotel, $60+ for luxury.

Food : $10 per day per person for lunch, dinner and water. You can eat for $5-7 in cheaper areas for local food. You will pay approx  $20 per person per day if you eat Western food.

Alcohol: A bottle of Lion beer costs $2, and wine or cocktails will set you back $4/5 per glass. Prices vary, but the way to find the cheapest alcohol is to drink where the locals drink or buy drinks from an off licence.

Transport : Travel by local bus or train for less than a dollar. We averaged around $4 per day for transport. To hire a driver for the day will set you back around $45 per day. Local tuk-tuks are around 50c to $1 per short trip.

Entry fees : You will find a complete list of entry fees to the different attractions  here . Pick and choose whichever you can fit into your budget.

sri lanka multi-day tours 5 days with private driver, vehicle and H/B accommodations

I spent 4 short but enjoyable days in Sri Lanka. Day at beach hotel, Wilpattu national park safari, Sigiriya Lions rock fortress (with kandy city, dance show), and Nuwara Eliya. Sigiriya was amazing! Well worth the 1000 step climb. Prasanna, my guide and driver, was prompt with pickup upon arrival. He gave such a warm welcome that i immediately relaxed and knew i was in good hands. He's funny and very personable. Because it's a private tour, with solo traveler, it was like riding along with a friend. Prasanna constantly checked in to make sure I had what I needed and was enjoying myself. He organized a wonderful massage for me after I had some body aches. His presence has made Sri Lanka somewhere I will remember fondly forever. Lanka Safe communication and organization before the tour was good. Planning is flexible and can be whatever a client wants. I decided to just book transport with Lanka Safe, and organized the hotels myself. It was smooth. Communication wasn't as swift after payment but still timely enough. I was surprised that there were no messages prior to my arrival, but my driver was waiting for me at the airport, so it wasn't a problem. Several companies never responded to my inquiries, so I appreciate Lanka Safe being so easy to work with. Thank you, Prasanna and Lanka Safe Tours for giving me a warm and fun short holiday in Sri Lanka.

Dinesh was a great manager of the tour. The locations that he suggested was great and the driver that he hired to drive us around was a very safe driver. He always pulled to the side of the road to make calls Booking was very easy. Dinesh was in constant communication and ensured I understood the itenary and customized it to the number of people and the places we wanted to visit Since we arrived a day early we stayed at a local hotel and Dinesh and Salim the driver arrived the following morning. Punctuality is one of the key things that set Dinesh and Salim. We never had to wait for them On the first day Dinesh treated us to king coconut. Which was so fun. We visited a lot of places in short amount of time and the different guides that Dinesh found at the different sites were knowledgeable and friendly All in all a good trip I would say of all the places. Lion rock is not to be missed, yala National Park, pollanaru and Galle and Mirissa. We didn’t get to see much of Ella and nuwara Eliya due to the weather.
