The Cult (formed in 1983) is an English post-punk and hard rock band, originally formed as a gothic, metal revivalist band with Native American influences, hailing from Bradford, Yorkshire, UK.

Prior to forming The Cult, vocalist Ian Astbury founded the gothic rock band the Southern Death Cult alongside guitarist David Burrows, bassist Barry Jepson, and drummer Haq Quereshi. In December 1982 the band issued their debut double A-sided single “Moya”/“Fatman” and were attracting audiences of up to 2,000 people by their fifth live gig. Following a slot opening for the band Bauhaus, Astbury disbanded the group after reading too many positive articles about them in music periodicals.

By 1983 Astbury had formed Death Cult with guitarist Billy Duffy, drummer Ray Mondo, and bassist Jamie Stewart and released a self-titled EP that summer. With fears of being associated as a gothic band, in 1984 Death Cult became The Cult, boasting their brand of hard rock with punk/psychedelic influences. The band’s debut full-length “Dreamtime” arrived later in 1984 peaking at No. 21 on the UK Albums Chart. The record was led by the single “Spiritwalker”, earned favourable reviews from the musical press, and introduced Astbury’s interest in Native American issues. Prior to touring in support of the release The Cult recorded five songs at Maida Vale 5 studio for Richard Skinner of BBC Radio.

The Cult’s fourth single “She Sells Sanctuary” was released in May 1985, peaking at No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart. By this point Mark Brzezicki had arrived as the group’s new drummer and the band were putting the final touches on their sophomore album. 1985’s ”Love” arrived in August strongly rooting their music away from punk towards 1960’s psychedelia. The album charted well peaking at No. 4 in the UK, and sold impressively throughout Europe, Australia, and the U.S. In support of the release The Cult embarked on a worldwide tour with new drummer Les Warner, during which time the band released the subsequent album singles “Rain” and “Revolution”.

Despite initial recordings not satisfying the Cults’ members, re-recordings in New York with producer Rick Bubin produced positive albeit much heavier results. The 1987 album “Electric” was led by the No. 18 single “Love Removal Machine”, cementing the Cult’s devoted following in the UK and augmenting one in the U.S. The Cult’s fourth full-length album “Sonic Temple” was recorded with Astbury and new drummer Matt Sorum, and represented the group’s most successful release to date. Earning gold certification in the UK and platinum in the U.S., the album’s Top 10 U.S. single “Fire Woman” led to the band touring with Aerosmith, Soundgarden, and Metallica.

With Mickey Curry added on drums and Charlie Dayton on bass, the Cult released their fifth full-length “Ceremony” in 1991. Despite the sales of its predecessor, the Cult project was splintering behind the scenes, and following the release the band took a three year hiatus. The compilation “Pure Cult” arrived in 1993, as did a new rhythm section featuring former Mission bassist Craig Adams and drummer Scott Garrett. Following a disappointing self-titled album in 1994 the band once again took a hiatus with Astbury forming the Holy Barbarians” in 1995.

Astbury, alongside Matt Sorum, Duffy and Martyn LeNoble appeared as The Cult in June 1999 at the Tibetan Freedom Festival. The group later crafted the album “Beyond Good and Evil” in 2001, “Born into This” in 2004, and “Choice of Weapon” in 2012.

Live reviews

The Cult will probably always be most closely associated with the eighties; back then, they came over like The Cure’s more brazen, no-bullshit cousin, with a take on gothic rock that was always more concerned with image and sound than any real thematic preoccupation. Frontman Ian Astbury, too, gave Robert Smith a run for his money in the make-up stakes, and continues to prove a considerably more energetic presence on stage. Outwith that decade, though, they began to struggle, and have been on-again, off-again ever since 1995, when they initially split. Their first reunion, in 1999, saw them drop a well-received new record, Beyond Good and Evil; ten years later, though, Astbury had taken to being altogether more cautious about their future, declaring that no further new material would stem from the reformation. He’s gone back on that promise, though, with Choice of Weapon released two years ago to a strong commercial showing in the United States and Canada, and another largely agreeable reception from rock critics. Whilst the Bradfordians prep another new LP, due later this year, they’re touring their classic 1987 album Electric in its entirety; expect them to flesh out the set with other classics, too, like ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ and ‘Revolution’, before they go out in support of their next album in 2015.

The Cult is opening on this leg of the G 'n R tour. I was super stoked when I heard that. The show I saw was in the Cowboys' AT&T stadium, which is monstrous with less than stellar accoustics. The place was about half-full when The Cult started their set. You could tell Ian was not thrilled about the folks up front that were texting instead of trying to enjoy the music in front of them. He made several comments along those lines. But the band still sounded great. I would actually say it was easier to understand Ian's vocals with less amps behind him than it was to understand Axl with a wall of power behind him. As more people came in and the beer had been flowing, people were getting into the music. The last two songs She Sells Sactuary and Love Removal Machine had everybody engaged. Billy Duffy seemed to feed off that better energy, too, as he began windmilling ala Pete Townsend. They definitely did not disappoint but I think they are better suited for more intimate venue where they can connect more quickly. I would see them again in a heartbeat.

It seems rather fitting to have described British hard rock outfit The Cult as a cult phenomena following their incarnation in the early 80s. The group has now cemented its place on the circuit and despite infrequent breaks in their recording and touring schedules, as of late they are intent on performing to the devoted fanbase who continue to sell out their tours in force.

No longer described as cult, despite the band name, the venue is packed this evening with fans of the group's long discography. They are not disappointed as the quartet takes to their instruments looking energised and intent as they grapple with a first set made exclusively of the 'Electric' album. The second half is far more about showcasing the very best selections of their discography and features the new classics of 'She Sells Sanctuary' and 'Rain'. These are of course received well by the vocal crowds and simply spurs the group on to throw themselves further into the instrumentals. An encore of 'Horse Nation' and 'Sun King' is a fitting end to a rambunctious, nostalgic evening.

I am sorry to say, as a fan of the group since the 80s and watching them live several times I was very disappointed will the singer's Attitude, he seemed so much up his own Arse and arrogant. Spitting on stage. Someone has to clean up!! There was a lot of drinking and dangerous mooshing going on, several girls left there place at the front as they were fearful for there safety . I stayed at front till 2 songs from the end. I was getting badly hurt being pushed against the barrier. What I thought was a absolute disgrace was the singer told the crowd that in a crowd of Six thousand it's stupid putting yourself in danger( hinting at me) and if they don't like the rock way then they should not go to gigs!!? I pay the same as the drunk spaced out individuals who want to cause bother.why should not I expect to be safe? I'm not a fan of them now because of this attitude. music was great, cello and violin at one point with invited musicians. Such a shame the night was spoilt for me and other weaker folk.

The Cult is the reason for my becoming a dedicated musician in 1985. I finally saw them in 2003, it was a huge moment for me but I can admit being a little underwhelmed by the lack of energy on the stage. Sloppy and a bit boring. Fast forward to last night and the difference still has me singing Wild Flower, their opener. They were fantastic! As soon as they walked on-stage their confidence and sound took command and I realized that THIS was what I had been waiting for. The crowd was great, the setlist impeccable, and the chemistry of the Cult very solid. Even Billy Duffy took the mic at the end to express his appreciation for the audience, so I know that they had a blast, too. It really showed!

johnny-wall-1’s profile image

Right from the off, Astbury was stamping his war dance in a Jim Morrison style as Billy Duffy stood, legs spread as far as possible, firing out a howling solo on his iconic white Gretsch guitar. Rain's towering melody got the crowd jumping as they switched between songs from the new album and old classic’s. Tracks like Fire Woman and Li'l Devil kept up the momentum, with Astbury's voice sounding as primal and defiant as ever. It started off massive and just built from there to an amazing crescendo. Absolutely Brilliant

Saw them once at The Brixton Academy in the UK around Nov 1987. Being an American 15 year old at the time on holiday in the UK at the time, and it being my first real concert, it was an amazing experience. Great memories of them rocking out hard with Billy Duffy crushing the guitar solos. Somehow I remember the opening bands too: crazy pink revolver and Balem and the Angel. Great times. hope to make the wellmont show in NJ. Soundtrack of my youth.

A great show/performance, considering the venue. The River Cree Edmonton, really needs to look and evaluate their room to improve the sound and lessen the '60's/'70's issues of echo feedback, as voiced by Ian Astbury.

With that said, the group delivered a very, memorable rockin', enjoyable performance. I have been a fan from the beginning, well, since 1984 anyway. Still a great fan and deservedly so. ;-)

The entire show was cancelled 50min before the doors were supposed to be open.

The place was locked down and dead upon arrival at 6pm. Not a sole in sight. No

equipment out back..nothing. Total bust.

We were extremely skeptical from the start and it pretty much ended with a

fizzle as we expected.

No love for the NILE and it's related clubs.

Best gig I’ve been to in a while, really slick sound and loads of energy. Ian Astbury’s vocal was incredible had the audience jumping through a succession of crowd-pleasers. I didn’t catch the first act but Yonaka put in a great support-act shift but the Cult were in a different league to many bands I’ve seen this year and I’m looking forward to the next time

The Cult add extra London show to 2024 UK anniversary tour

It comes after the band announced a 40th-anniversary tour earlier this month

Ian Astbury, left, and guitarist Billy Duffy of The Cult perform at The Pearl concert theater at Palms Casino Resort on October 27, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Cult have added an extra London show to their upcoming anniversary tour. Check out ticket details below.

The announcement comes just days after the rock icons announced details of an upcoming UK tour for the end of 2024 – which will see them celebrate 40 years as a band.

Upcoming shows will be held in 10 cities across the country, and mark the milestone anniversary of Ian Astbury and co. coming together as we recognise them today – swapping their name from the original title ‘Death Cult’ into ‘The Cult’.

Now, following the initial date at London’s Royal Albert Hall selling out, the band have announced details of a second show in the UK capital, this time held at the Roundhouse venue in Camden.

The date is added as an extension to the original run of shows and will take place on Tuesday, November 5 – the day after the Royal Albert Hall gig. Tickets are available now and you can check out an updated itinerary for the UK shows below.

Taking place around the UK, Ireland and the US, the tour was called ‘Death Cult 8323’ and saw Duffy and Astbury return to play iconic venues they previously performed in at the start of their career.

The live shows focused on Death Cult and their eponymous EPs, and also boasted a setlist that spanned “the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: ‘Dreamtime’ (1984) and ‘Love’ (1985).”

Announcing the new run of dates, guitarist Billy Duffy said: “Following up from the great energy of ‘Death Cult 8323’ shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to ‘Cult 8424’… CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!”

More recently, Billy Duffy joined Johnny Marr on stage in Frome last summer to play tracks by The Smiths and Depeche Mode .

Last April, THE CULT guitarist Billy Duffy spoke to Tone-Talk about the progress of the recording sessions for the band's new album. The follow-up to 2016's "Hidden City" is being helmed by producer Tom Dalgety , who has previously worked with GHOST and ROYAL BLOOD , among others.

"We've been digging away at that over the last year and a half," Billy said. "We're working with a great young English producer called Tom Dalgety . And, obviously, with the circumstances of the last year or so, it's been a little challenging. But we're making some progress.

"The philosophy in THE CULT camp, really, is about quality, not quantity," Duffy explained. "We don't just need to keep putting out records for the sake of it. Without being ridiculous, we wanna, within a certain realistic time frame, make sure that the records that we put out are as good as they can be. So sometimes that takes a bit longer. And that's kind of where we're at."

He reiterated: "We're well into the process of the new CULT album."

Speaking about THE CULT 's songwriting approach this time around, Billy said: "One of the things about THE CULT , I think, that may be worth mentioning is it's always been a collaborative creative effort between me and Ian [ Astbury , vocals]. And as you can imagine, like any kind of situation, there's pushing and pulling, and Ian wants to go a certain direction, and I might resist, or I might wanna go a certain direction. And that tension creates [ THE CULT sound]. It's not like Ian writes ' Ian songs' and Billy writes ' Billy songs,' and we record them as THE CULT . There are no ' Ian songs' or ' Billy songs' — there are Ian and Billy songs together. And over the time, there's a bit of a creative — it's not always tension; I don't mean that in a bad way. That's what makes it good. It's that blend. We sort of respect each other to the extent that I think there's a trust there, and I think that, after this many years together, and a few years apart, I think we trust each other and respect each other enough.

"I think it's healthy to have creative tension," he continued. "There's nothing worse than walking into a room where nobody's got any ideas. I'd rather have an argument about something creative than to have nothing, just the sound of crickets: 'All right. What are we gonna do now?'

"We see things very differently," Billy admitted. "In a lot of ways, we're very alike. Our birthdays are one year and two days apart. So we're both Taureans. Our birthdays are both coming up very soon. We're very alike in a lot of ways and very different in a lot of ways."

"Hidden City" was released in February 2016 via Cooking Vinyl . The follow-up to 2012's "Choice Of Weapon" was written by Astbury and Duffy and was produced by Bob Rock , who has previously worked with METALLICA and MÖTLEY CRÜE .

In May 2020, it was announced that THE CULT had inked a deal with Black Hill Records .

The aforementioned "Sonic Temple" album catapulted THE CULT into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release. It has sold over 1.5 million copies in the U.S. alone and was certified platinum in 1990. It made it to No. 10 on the Billboard charts, and several of the album's songs remain rock-radio staples to this day.

80s rock icon is sick of rumors, reveals real reason his band won’t reunite

Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach is airing out all of the rumors and speculation about his departure and break from the rock band.

The band was originally founded in 1986 in Toms River by bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave Sabo . Bach joined the following year in 1987, but parted ways in 1996 following apparent growing tension in the band. Things reportedly reached a crisis point when Skid Row was invited to open for Kiss on its celebrated reunion tour, but Bach’s bandmates turned down the opportunity due to scheduling conflicts. Bach grew angry and took it out on the other members, eventually leading to his removal from the band. Since then, fans and music critics have speculated on if Bach and the rest of the band would potentially reunite.

In a recent Screamer Magazine interview , Bach spoke out about Skid Row again and decided to set the record straight.

“There’s a whole narrative that we don’t get along, or they don’t wanna get in the same room as me,” Bach told Screaming Magazine. “There’s stuff that I have found out recently on the business side that I can tell the Planet Earth, this has nothing to do with what happened in 96, or me being wild, or us not getting along.”

He added that the issues the band had were more business-related rather than on the personal side.

“I can’t give you all the details, but it’s not about us not getting along,” Bach told the publication. “It’s about us figuring out how to make this work on the business side. And hopefully, we can figure it out. I’m ready to figure it out, but the whole narrative of ‘oh they don’t like him and he’s too crazy’ that’s not even true.”

Skid Row has continued to perform with various lead singers through the years with its most recent frontman Eric Gronwell who was with the band since 2022 but recently left to focus on his health. It was announced that Lzzy Hale of Halestorm would temporarily serve as vocalist through the rest of the year though a permanent singer has yet to be announced.

Bach confessed to Screamer Magazine that he wasn’t happy with the news of Hale joining stating that after “9 replacements” of him, he doesn’t want to “read about number 10.”

Bach has a new solo album, “Child Within the Man,” coming out on May 10 and will go on a North American tour to promote it. While he does not have a New Jersey show planned, but he will make a stop in Patchogue, New York at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts on May 16, as well as Albany, New York on May 22 at Empire Live .

Some legacy rock bands stop making new music after a certain point and only tour and re-release their biggest hits. Others continue with the work because they love being creative. Blue Öyster Cult is somewhere in the middle, as they’re still looking into the past but simultaneously scoring new hits on the Billboard charts in the present.

This week, Blue Öyster Cult returns to one Billboard ranking in the United States with their latest release. The band’s new album Ghost Stories debuts on the Top Album Sales chart at No. 24.

In its first frame of availability, Ghost Stories sold 3,080 copies, according to Luminate. That’s a healthy sales sum in today’s American music industry, and it shows the group still claims a sizable enough fan base that is interested in what they have to offer these days.

Somewhat surprisingly, Blue Öyster Cult has appeared on the Top Album Sales chart only twice. Ghost Stories instantly doubles their total number of wins on the ranking of the bestselling releases in the U.S. each week.

In 2020, Blue Öyster Cult nabbed their first hit on the Top Album Sales chart with The Symbol Remains . That project reached as high as No. 12, nearly giving the band a top 10 smash. It managed a trio of turns on the list before falling away.

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

Rudy giuliani and mark meadows indicted in arizona fake electors case, tupac shakur s estate challenges drake over ai vocals in kendrick lamar diss song.

The band has been much more successful on the Billboard 200, which is often considered more competitive than the Top Album Sales chart. This may be due to the fact that Blue Öyster Cult’s heyday was back when the Billboard 200 was the only important albums ranking in America. The Top Album Sales list only became necessary when other forms of consumption were used to rank the Billboard 200, so one tally looking only at pure purchases became vital.

Ghost Stories features songs that Blue Öyster Cult originally recorded in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s (and one newer track). These cuts were reworked and re-recorded, and now they’ve helped the band collect a welcome new hit on one of Billboard’s most important tallies.

Riding the rails between the future and the past

the cult band tour

Tomsk also has one of Siberia’s youngest populations. Six major universities, including the Tomsk State University and the Tomsk Polytechnic University are located here, and twenty percent of Tomsk’s population are students. The streets of Tomsk contain some of Siberia’s oldest buildings, and the contrast between the faded architecture and the youthful students creates a powerful juxtaposition between the past and present.

Tomsk was first established in 1604 when a band of Cossacks was sent to build a fort on the Tom River. The settlement grew into the city of Tomsk which enjoyed a brief period of prestige as Russia’s most easterly border town.

As Russian explorers continued annexing parts of Siberia further east, Tomsk’s importance waned until the Sibirsky Trakt, also known as the Post Road, was built through Tomsk in the mid-18th century. Caravans laden with goods from the Far East traveled west along the Trakt towards Moscow. Tomsk boomed because of its location on the Trakt, and many of the city’s most beautiful churches and historic buildings were constructed during the age of the caravan.

In 1804, Tomsk became the administrative capital of the surrounding region, including the cities of Krasnoyarsk and Kemerovo. The discovery of gold outside Tomsk brought the city even more prosperity. In 1878, by order of Tsar Alexander II, Tomsk State University was founded and became Siberia’s first university. Other universities sprung up in Tomsk, and today the city is nicknamed the ‘Siberian Athens.’

Tomsk fell off the map again by the end of the 19th century, when the Trans-Siberian Railroad was routed through Novonikolaevsk, the town which became Russia’s third-largest city Novosibirsk, instead of Tomsk. During the Second World War, most of the factories in western Russia were moved to Siberian cities, including Tomsk. The rebuilding of Tomsk as an industrial center was a boon for the city, and the discovery of oil in the surrounding countryside during the 1960s got Tomsk’s economy rolling again.

While many places in Siberia experience a brain drain as young people leave for the economic potential in Europe, Tomsk has witnessed a slight population increase over the last decade. Today, this city of half a million is one of Russia’s intellectual capitals and makes for a great stop on the long train journey between the cities of Novosibirsk and Irkutsk.

Most of Tomsk’s main points of interest are found on the streets that follow the Tom River north to south. Start a walking tour of Tomsk at the southern end of town by exploring the grounds of the universities to get a glimpse of the city’s student life. While you’re there, take a stroll in nearby Lagerny Sad, a large park along the Tom River tucked away from the bustle of the universities. The park is located at the southern end Pr. Lenina, the city’s main drag.

If you want to learn more about the infamous Gulag labor camps that once sprouted up in Siberia, stop in at the Oppression Museum (44 Pr. Lenina), a former detention center managed by the NKVD—the Soviet secret police. Visitors here can take a chilling tour through the repressive times of the Stalinist days and even walk through cells where prisoners in Tomsk were once held.

From the Oppression Museum, take a peak in the Atashev Palace (Pr. Lenina 75) a former church turned home of a local businessman during Tomsk’s gold rush. The streets near the palace are some of the best places to view the city’s ornate wooden architecture. The first Siberian cities, most notably Tomsk, Tyumen, and Tobolsk, were all built from wood. Fires in each of these cities destroyed most of the historic buildings and they were eventually rebuilt from stone. Tomsk is home to some of the best-preserved wooden buildings in Siberia. The streets of Tatarskaya, Gagarina, and Krasnoarmeyskaya, located near the Atashev Palace, have some of the best examples.

Your next stop should be Ploshad Lenina, the city’s main square. Stop at the Epiphany Cathedral, constructed in 1784, and head west to the riverfront to see the Chekhov statue. While traveling across Russia, playwright Anton Chekhov stopped in Tomsk and described the city as ‘boring.’ The Tomsk statue of Chekhov portrays a parody of the famous Russian literary figure as a washed-up man with large feet viewed from the perspective of a drunk.

End your tour with a walk up Resurrection Hill northeast of Lenin Square where the original Tomsk fort was built. At the top, you’ll find a Catholic Church and the city’s History Museum which features a lookout tower.

Tomsk is also home to Europe’s most easterly football club FC Tom Tomsk . From their remote Siberian base in Tomsk’s Trud Stadium (15/1 Ul. Belinskogo), the team travels thousands of kilometers away to face off against other clubs in the Premier League. Watching Siberia’s best football club play a match is one of the highlights of a visit to Tomsk.

Other entertainment options include the city’s Philharmonic Orchestra (12a Ul. Lenina), the Aelita Theater (78 Pr. Lenina) for plays and concerts, and the Tomsk Drama Theater (4 Pr. Lenina).

Sayan Ring Travel Company , based in nearby Krasnoyarsk, can help book tours of Tomsk and the surrounding region. Prices vary depending on group size and length, but expect to pay between $40-125 per person for tours with a group of five people.

Four decades in, the Pet Shop Boys know the secret to staying cool

Back with new album “Nonetheless,” recorded during the pandemic, the Pet Shop Boys discuss finding joy in lockdown solitude. (April 25)

LONDON (AP) — Chicken Kiev, AI-generated press releases and the annoyance of fan selfies while performing — there was a lot on the minds of the Pet Shop Boys as the iconic British duo prepared to release a new album.

Their 15th studio album, “Nonetheless,” comes Friday — 40 years (and 50 million record sales) after Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe rose to fame with the single “West End Girls.” Bands of any longevity — especially such a long one — are often asked the cliche: “How do you stay relevant?” For them, it’s about never trying to be cool.

“That’s something a lot of people try and do, to be somehow cool, which is therefore completely uncool, because it’s trying too hard,” Tennant told The Associated Press recently. “So we have just followed our own instincts.”

“We’ll always be relevant in our world,” Lowe added, laughing.

A testament of that relevance? Classic Pet Shop Boys hits were used as plot points in two cult movies last year: a karaoke scene in “Saltburn” featuring “Rent” and a key Christmas scene in “All of Us Strangers” soundtracked by “Always on My Mind.”

This is worlds away from Hollywood past, where, Tennant says, “It’s a Sin” was always overused for the young guy walking into a gay club “reducing us to this sort of cliche of gay disco.”

A newly adopted dog is held at Oakland Animal Services on Thursday, April 4, 2024, in Oakland, Calif. The city animal shelter has seen a surge in pets surrendered by tenants who can't find rentals that allow pets. A bill in California wants to make more rental housing available to tenants with pets. (AP Photo/Terry Chea)

“Nonetheless” remains upbeat despite being written in the U.K. during the coronavirus pandemic, when most people were locked down at home.

“Well, the weather was nice, wasn’t it?” Lowe jokes.

“It was a very productive time,” Tennant adds, noting that the cancellation of their tour eased the pressure.

“I think that’s why it sounds in a way quite optimistic, because life was different. It was a different sort of life with no pressure, apart from not trying to catch the virus,” he says.

The first single, “Loneliness,” addresses the social isolation of the pandemic but was written as a positive message. Another lockdown-themed track, “Why Am I Dancing?” was Tennant asking himself: “Why are you enjoying this situation of being by yourself so much so that you can actually dance?”

“And I’m probably cooking at the same time,” he is quick to add.

“Cooking and dancing, now that’s a little podcast idea, isn’t it?” Lowe jokes.

And while Lowe says he’d be popping a ready-made pie in the oven, Tennant would be making dal, brown rice and vegetables or a chicken Kiev.

“You’ve got a good story for that,” Tennant says, looking to his bandmate.

“I wrote to (U.K. supermarket) Marks & Spencer… asking them to change the spelling of chicken Kiev to chicken Kyiv because of the war,” Lowe says. They did eventually change it.

Despite living through big changes in the way music is consumed, the band remain philosophical. Despite new ways of listening and discovering music, “music is still music.”

And when it comes to Spotify, while Lowe says it has helped him discover a lot of new music, both hate the app’s recommendations.

“With us, The Pet Shop Boys, it will say, ‘If you like this, you might like Duran Duran,’ so it thinks you’re all ‘80s,” Tennant explains. “And if you’re us you say: ‘You might like Years and Years electronic pop music or Kraftwerk from before us.’”

“Sometimes they might just think, ‘Well you’re gay so you might like Boy George because he’s gay as well.’ It’s very, very stupid,” he says.

Pet Shop Boys will perform five special performances at London’s Royal Opera House in July, but please don’t run to the front of the stage and then turn your back for a selfie.

“I just deliberately move out the way. Sorry to be a spoilsport but I find it really, really rude,” Tennant says.

Cellphone users aren’t all bad for business though.

“You now know when something is working because all the phones come out,” Tennant explains.

“Cigarette lighters are replaced with phones for a ballad it looks really quite gorgeous, it’s really quite moving,” he adds.

Artificial intelligence is changing the industry, but the band doesn’t have any plans to use it anytime soon — well, at least not in its music.

When their publicist called for a quote on the album for a press release, they turned to ChatGPT, which described the album as “a celebration of the unique and diverse emotions that make us human.” They went with it.

“It’s a great quote” Tennant admits. “We sort of agree with it. We normally make some flippant remark, whereas ChatGPT gave us this very earnest description which is actually accurate.”

[ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OF ENDOSCOPIC AND MORPHOLOGICAL STUDIES OF THE STOMACH MUCOSA WITH REDUCED PEPSINOGEN-I IN PATIENTS WITH H. PYLORI (H.P.)--ASSOCIATED GASTRITIS IN TOMSK AND TOMSK REGION]

  • PMID: 26415268

Aim of investigation: To explore and describe the endoscopic picture of HP--associated atrophic gastritis and to analyze the specificity of endoscopic markers indicating the presence of atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia using high-tech methods of endoscopy in comparison with morphological characteristics of atrophic gastritis defining the degree of activity and stage of atrophic gastritis according to the system OLGA.

Materials and methods: 40 people: males and females aged 40 to 70 years with a reduced level of pepsinogen I and a positive titre of antibodies to H. pylori in serum--were included into the study.

The results: Risk groups with atrophic gastritis based on indicators of pepsinogen 1 were formed. Endoscopic picture of H. Pylori--associated atrophic gastritis in patients with reduced level of pepsinogen I in serum is studied and described. Analysis of the specificity of endoscopic markers indicating the presence of AG, intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia using high-tech methods of endoscopy (endoscopy with high resolution, magnifying endoscopy, chromoendoscopy and narrow band imaging endoscopy (NBI) is made. Analysis of their sensitivity in comparison with the results of morphological studies of biopsy material is made.

Conclusion: Thus, these studies show that high-resolution endoscopy in combination with magnification and chromoendoscopy allows accurately identify areas of atrophy, intestinal.Narrow band imaging endoscopy (NBI) provides a detailed picture of the vascular pattern of tissues, pattern changes typical for pathological areas of inflammatory genesis, as well as for precancers and early cancers. All these methods have high sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of HP-associated atrophic gastritis in comparison with the results of morphological studies of biopsy materials of stomach mucosa.

Four decades in, the Pet Shop Boys know the secret to staying cool

LONDON — Chicken Kiev, AI-generated press releases and the annoyance of fan selfies while performing — there was a lot on the minds of the Pet Shop Boys as the iconic British duo prepared to release a new album.
