The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Celebrate the 48th Anniversary With Spectacular Tour Screenings

Celebrate Halloween and do the time warp again by watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show with the movie's stars Barry Bostwick and Patricia Quinn.

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show: The 48th Anniversary Spectacular Tour is happening for Halloween 2023, featuring stars Barry Bostwick and Patricia Quinn.
  • Bostwick and Quinn will anchor different legs of the tour across the US and Canada, with the final show in Washington, D.C. on Halloween night.
  • The tour will include participation screenings, costume contests, shadow casts, and a special Meet and Greet add-on package for fans to meet Bostwick or Quinn and get autographs.

“It’s not easy having a good time.” Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) couldn’t have been more wrong because The Rocky Horror Picture Show : The 48th Anniversary Spectacular Tour is making the rounds for Halloween 2023. And fans can celebrate the spookiest of all seasons watching TRHPS this year alongside the film’s stars Barry Bostwick and Patricia Quinn. Check out the promotional posters for the month-long celebrations below:

Bostwick and Quinn will be anchoring different legs of The 48th Anniversary Spectacular Tour across the United States and Canada all month long, until TRHPS event finally reaches the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. on Halloween night. This will be the one and only tour date to feature both actors from the 1975 classic, while the others will feature just one of the Rocky Horror alums.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. EDT and the show starts at 8 p.m. Bostwick famously played the "a—hole" Brad Majors, while Quinn brought the fiery red-headed Magenta to life on the Silver Screen. Bostwick said in a press release (per KTAR News ):

“Forty-eight years ago, Susan Sarandon and I jumped off a plane in London and into a world we never could have expected to be honoring and celebrating all these years later. A family of weirdos and consummate professionals. ‘Rocky’ has changed lives, not just ours, and had a profound effect on how we accept our differences in this world. We were fitted for our corsets and high heels and enthusiastically started singing songs that have endured for all these years. And ‘Dammit Janet’! I have made nerds cool.”

If you can’t make the All Hallows’ Eve celebration in Washington, D.C., there are plenty of opportunities to meet Bostwick and/or Quinn separately at 48th Anniversary Spectacular Tour performances all across North America. But for now, check out the video promoting the tour’s next stop on Tuesday, October 10 at the Robins Theatre in Warren, Ohio below:

' src=

The Rocky Horror Show, the beloved rock ‘n’ roll musical, is marking its 50th anniversary with a global tour that commenced in Sydney, Australia. The show received tremendous critical acclaim and played to sold-out audiences, setting the stage for a worldwide celebration.

An all-star Australian cast headlines the 50th Anniversary Production, with Jason Donovan portraying Frank N Furter, Myf Warhurst as The Narrator, Stellar Perry as Magenta, Ellis Dolan as Eddie/Dr. Scott, Darcey Eagle as Columbia, Ethan Jones as Brad, Deirdre Khoo as Janet, Loredo Malcolm as Rocky, and Henry Rollo as Riff Raff. David Bedella, a three-time Olivier Award winner, portrays Frank N Furter in Adelaide, Gold Coast, Perth, Canberra, and the final three weeks in Melbourne, and acclaimed actor and writer Nicholas Hammond plays The Narrator in Perth and Canberra. Josh Gates, Catty Hamilton, Jackson Reedman, and Erica Wild serve as The Phantoms, and Keane Fletcher and Kristina McNamara as the Swings.

Since its creation by Richard O’Brien in 1973, The Rocky Horror Show has become one of the world’s favorite musicals. It is the sole contemporary rock musical to celebrate 50 years on stage. The show has been continuously performed somewhere globally since its London premiere and has cemented its place in history as one of the classics of musical theatre. The show was transformed into a film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in 1975, which took over $135 million at the box office and is still shown in cinemas worldwide. Many stars of stage and screen, including Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf, Jerry Springer, Adam Lambert, Emma Bunton, Stephen Fry, Reg Livermore, Bert Newton, Gretel Killeen, Derryn Hinch, and Shane Jacobsen, have appeared in The Rocky Horror Show over the last 50 years.

The Rocky Horror Show has been seen by over 30 million people in more than 30 countries and translated into 20 languages. Audiences have embraced the show’s unique and playful musical with enthusiasm and passion, reveling in the indulgence of their senses. The show features one of the most iconic musical numbers of all time, “The Time Warp,” which continues to be a vital component of its continued success over the past 50 years.

The 50th Anniversary Rocky Horror Show creative team includes Director Christopher Luscombe, Set Designer Hugh Durrant, Costume Designer Sue Blane, Choreographer Nathan M Wright, Lighting Designer Nick Richings, and Music Richard Hartley (original musical arrangements).

In 2023, The Rocky Horror Show will continue its global tour, bringing the most audacious party bash of them all to audiences across Australia. Whether it’s your first or twenty-first time seeing the show, the production promises to deliver on its pledge of a guaranteed party. The Rocky Horror Show is a celebration of fun, frivolity, and outrageous outfits, bursting with timeless songs. It is an adventure audiences will never forget.

The Adelaide Festival Theatre’s limited season concluded on May 13, and will be followed by Melbourne’s Atheneum Theatre from May 18 to July 30, Crown Theatre Perth from August 6, The Star on Queensland’s Gold Coast from September 3, and Canberra Theatre Centre from September 29.

L et’s do the timewarp, again.

When it comes to musical favourites on repeat, Rocky Horror Show is the flag-waving, heel-kicking standard bearer for keep on keepin’ on. It should, by now, be spouted in theatre circles that the only things to survive a nuclear holocaust would likely be cockroaches, Liz Truss ’ inexplicable career, and a touring production of Richard O’Brien ’s madcap classic.

And yet, as the world turns, doing its own ‘jump to the left and step to the right’ in the process, the times that this venerable production (nigh identical in staging to when this particular author first reviewed, over a decade ago) finds itself landing in are a-changing, too.

Perhaps more than ever in recent memory, in the wake and gloom of a pandemic, the drab ebb of financial crises, and the regressive, authoritarian stamp being slapped across the world onto expression, individuality and flamboyance, the world needs Rocky Horror .

the rocky horror tour 2023

It’s fortunate then, that the class of 2022/23 – a mix of veterans and newcomers alike to camp Rocky – rise to the occasion for this current World tour.

As the now-iconic splash of the show’s Columbia character and logo, on digital billboard outside Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre, proudly boasts, this latest run marks the fiftieth anniversary of the camp, formerly cult, favourite. In appearance, bells and whistles, it’s practically the exact same glitzy, colourful trip wheeled out for the fortieth, too, but that’s no bad thing. Hugh Durrant ’s B-movie-meets-Christie set stylings, Nick Richings ’ technicolor barrage of lighting and Sue Blane ’s seminal costumes – we’ve been here before, but it’s devilishly good to be back.

the rocky horror tour 2023

A most loyal slav…servant! : Outside of perhaps OG ‘Frank n Furter’, Tim Curry , and O’Brien himself, no other performer has served the ‘ Rocky Horror’  brand with as much flare and enduring gusto as Kristian Lavercombe (pictured above). Lavercombe boasts over 2,000 performances as the iconic ‘Riff Raff’, and has become a firm fan favourite (with good cause).

And it’s great to have some familiar faces along for the ride, too – Stephen Webb slips back into the suspenders with rich ease as the iconic ‘Frank n Furter’, with his full-bodied, handsomely-sung and admirably unique spin on the role once again a joy. Any Rocky Horror worth its smut needs a ‘Frank’ that commands the stage, and Webb does so with delicious relish – soaring vocals at the ready, figure-hugging corset strapped tight, ridiculously oversized whip in hand.

Elsewhere, veteran ‘Narrator’ Philip Franks – who played the role in that very same inaugural review of mine back in the halcyon days of 2012 – is clearly still having a ball and showing no signs of languishing. This time round, he had plenty of topical detours to toy around with (‘ Suella the Musical ’, anyone?), slotting in natural alongside the tried-and-tested, fan-favourite shoutouts and double entendres.

Perhaps most inseparable of all, Kristian ‘Riff Raff’ Lavercombe pulls off the genuinely quite breathtaking feat of still serving up a sizzling, giddily energised tour-de-force as Frank n Furter’s right-hand man, even after some two-thousand performances in the role. He is, in many ways, the show’s MVP – good luck finding a performer with such an indelible stamp on a character, whilst still knocking it out of the park, still finding new wrinkles and beats and still serving up a turn that crackles with the freshness of the first flushes of previews, never mind over a decade on.

Nipping at his heels though, are probably the most uniformly-excellent Rocky cast that this particular reviewer has had the pleasure of shouting ‘c*ck’ at …and there have been many. Richard Meek  (another returnee) seems perfectly plucked from the era as a stroppy, boyish Brad with a tender, soulful voice, whilst stage veteran Haley Flaherty struts, slinks and shimmies back into the show with a masterclass Janet – comfortably the best reviewed to date (again, this is no small praise – she’s in some fine company).

“…the irresistible, hilarious, unabashedly camp and infectiously naughty Rocky Horror with its sonic oscillator dialled all the way up to ‘perfection’”

Darcy Finden ’s Columbia? Exquisite. Ben Westhead ’s Rocky? Fabulous (and certainly passes the Charles Atlas test). Joe Allen ’s Eddie-Dr Scott duality? My favourite to date. Suzie McAdams, also on dual duty, as both Usherette and Magenta? Lavercombe-levels of definitive and excellent.

If you notice a pattern emerging, it’s no science fiction, nor have I been seduced by an errant transducer.

This is, quite simply, the irresistible, hilarious, unabashedly camp and infectiously naughty Rocky Horror with its sonic oscillator dialled all the way up to ‘perfection’.

Sure, if you trawl wide and far enough, you’ll likely find some commentators taking pot shots at its representation of transvestism. Others, still, will probably pluck at a thread and find themselves arriving somewhere in the ballpark of perceived transphobia, but again, it feels very much like ‘square peg, round hole’ kind of revisionism.

In truth, for what is now five proud decades, Rocky Horror has championed and celebrated diversity and expression. It has sung from the hymn book of sex positivity, of gender fluidity, and of not just dreaming it, but being it. All whilst going nowhere near a soapbox, and staying effortlessly entertaining throughout.

Heck, in terms of staying power alone, and indeed one that commands even more fervent fan engagement, dressing up and love than ever before, it demands respect.

But strip away all of the socio-cultural framing, and even just as an evening of sinfully good musical theatre, this is Rocky Horror at the top of its game. A raucous, laugh-out-loud night of non-stop earworms, toe-tapping gems and plenty of post-modern mischief, there may be many informed by its influence, there may be some who consider themselves challengers to the throne ( hint: they’re not ), and even a merry band of naysayers to its cause, but the truth is quite simple…

There is only one Rocky Horror Show . And it’s still here; loud, proud and still captivating the crowd, performed this time round by across-the-board perfection.

Roll on the centenary.

It was great when it all began… and still is. Board the pretenders on the first ship to Transylvania, this is the one, the only, the original, performed to suspender-wearing, lipstick-smearing perfection.

Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show celebrates 50th Anniversary

January 17, 2023 Last updated: January 17, 2023 4:03 pm By Admin

2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the legendary smash hit musical The Rocky Horror Show , as it continues to play a newly extended tour through 2023 to sell-out crowds. Richard O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll musical celebrates 50 years of non-stop partying with this special anniversary production. Since it first opened in London in June 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre The Rocky Horror Show has become the longest continuous run of a contemporary musical anywhere in the world. The show has been seen by over 30 million people worldwide in more than 30 countries and translated into 20 languages as it continues to delight audiences on its sell-out international tour.

Without a doubt, The Rocky Horror Show is as iconic as it gets. Lighting up the stage this phenomenal cast will perform songs that are embedded in pop culture. With a whole host of special celebrations to be announced throughout the year, the cast are in full throttle and ready to honour this monumental moment, delivering a guaranteed party that leaps off the stage and transcends into the audience.

This celebratory tour is already thrilling audiences across the UK and the world, including recent sell-out trips to Tel Aviv, Milan, Rome and Trieste. The tour will continue throughout 2023, visiting Torquay, Sheffield, Dublin, Blackpool, Manchester, Chester, Shrewsbury, Edinburgh, Southampton, Birmingham, Cheltenham, Cardiff, Stockton, London, Eastbourne, Cornwall, Leeds, Aylesbury, Crewe, Woking, Portsmouth, Belfast, Southend, Nottingham, and Swindon – with further dates to be announced. The extraordinary cast is ready to deliver a guaranteed party not to be missed.

Producer Howard Panter said: “ Rocky Horror has always been a show I loved, since its earliest days in the Kings Road. Richard O’Brien and I are delighted this non-stop party continues to thrill audiences across the world, and we look forward to the next 50 years! ”

Richard O’Brien said: “ Back in the 1970’s when someone asked me to entertain the Christmas staff party at the EMI Film Studios and I turned up with a song called Science Fiction Double Feature who would have known this was the germ of the idea to turn into today what is The Rocky Horror Show. To be celebrating fifty years is beyond my wildest expectations – from the humble beginnings back in 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. The fact that The Rocky Horror show continues to delight audiences as it tours the UK fifty years on is simply thrilling. The Rocky Horror Show is one of Britain’s most performed and beloved musicals of all time. ”

As part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations, actor, presenter and winner of Strictly Come Dancing Ore Oduba is to don his fishnets once again as he returns to the role of Brad Majors in this special 50th year for a limited six-week run between 3rd May and 10th June at the Peacock Theatre, London.

Ore Oduba said: “ I can’t wait to reunite with my Rocky family, reprising my role as Brad Majors. There is just nothing quite like the Rocky Horror Show. I had the most incredible time touring the country last year, so to slip on the heels and zip up my corset again on the 50th anniversary of this iconic show will be so special. I can’t’ wait to Time Warp again at the Peacock Theatre, it’s going to be epic! ”

A brilliant cast are already wowing Rocky Horror audiences up and down the country, with West End star Stephen Webb (Jersey Boys/Legally Blonde) continuing in the iconic role of Frank, slipping into a corset and heels with ease, actor Philip Franks (The Darling Buds of May) plays The Narrator, Richard Meek (Hairspray/Spamlot) makes a welcome return as Brad and is joined by fan favourite Haley Flaherty (Mamma Mia/Chicago) as Janet.

Kristian Lavercombe (Jersey Boys/Jesus Christ Superstar) once again reprises his role as Riff Raff, following more than 2000 performances around the world, with Darcy Finden who made her professional debut last year as one of the Phantoms now stepping up to play the role of as Columbia. Ben Westhead (Oliver/The Sound of Music) plays Rocky, Suzie McAdams (School of Rock/Kinky Boots) takes on the role of Magenta and Joe Allen (Little Shop of Horrors/Charlie & The Chocolate Factory) plays Eddie & Dr Scott. Playing the Phantoms are Stefania Du Toit (Starlight Express/Singing in the Rain), Jessica Sole (Into The Woods/Camelot), Reece Budin (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical/Man of La Mancha) and Fionán O’Carroll (Theatre whilst training: Urinetown/Children of Eden) who is making his professional debut. Nathan Shaw (Walk Like A Man) and Tyla Nurden (Funny Girl/Carrie, The Musical) are Swings.

Directed by Christopher Luscombe, The Rocky Horror Show is ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, and features timeless classics including Sweet Transvestite, Damn it Janet, and of course, the pelvic thrusting show-stopping Time Warp.

The Rocky Horror Show is the story of two squeaky clean college kids – Brad and his fiancée Janet. When by a twist of fate, their car breaks down outside a creepy mansion whilst on their way to visit their former college professor, they meet the charismatic Dr Frank’n’Furter. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, filled with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity. The Rocky Horror Show is a guaranteed party, which famously combines science-fiction, horror, comedy and music while encouraging audience participation – meaning, of course, getting dressed-up in the most outrageous fancy dress.

The Rocky Horror Show first began life in 1973 before an audience of just 63 people in the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs. It was an immediate success and transferred to the Chelsea Classic Cinema, before going on to run at the Kings Road Theatre, 1973-79 and the Comedy Theatre in the West End, 1979-80. In 1975 it was transformed into a film called ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’. This film adaptation took over $135 million at the Box Office and is still shown in cinemas around the world more than 40 years after its premiere, making it the longest running theatrical release in cinema history. Many stars including Russell Crowe, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Jerry Springer, Jason Donovan and Meatloaf have appeared in The Rocky Horror Show over the past 45 years.

In 2015, as part of a sold-out season at London’s Playhouse Theatre, a special star-studded Gala charity performance in aid of Amnesty International was broadcast to over 600 cinemas across the UK and Europe. The live screening – featuring a host of celebrities playing The Narrator including Stephen Fry, Mel Giedroyc, Emma Bunton, Ade Edmondson, Anthony Head and Richard O’Brien – smashed box office records and was the biggest grossing film in cinemas across the UK. The performance was subsequently screened on the Sky Arts channel.

Ready to thrill you with fun and naughty moments, The Rocky Horror Show is the boldest bash of them all. But be warned, this show has rude parts!

The Rocky Horror Show Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary As The Legendary Musical Extends Its Tour Through 2023

Richard O’Brien said: “Back in the 1970’s when someone asked me to entertain the Christmas staff party at the EMI Film Studios and I turned up with a song called Science Fiction Double Feature who would have known this was the germ of the idea to turn into today what is The Rocky Horror Show. To be celebrating fifty years is beyond my wildest expectations – from the humble beginnings back in 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. The fact that The Rocky Horror show continues to delight audiences as it tours the UK fifty years on is simply thrilling. The Rocky Horror Show is one of Britain’s most performed and beloved musicals of all time.”

Review: The Rocky Horror Show – 50th Anniversary Tour, New Theatre, Cardiff

the rocky horror tour 2023

The Rocky Horror Show descends on Cardiff’s New Theatre once again, and we have two reviews from our two Rocky Horror Fans – well, it is the show’s 50th anniversary – so why not?

Thomas Howells writes:

The Rocky Horror Show , which returns to Cardiff’s New Theatre this week, boasts a set that is both simple and effective, with a large area as its centrepiece. This area serves as the inside of Dr Frank-N-Furter’s castle and is surrounded by a few smaller set pieces that are used to create various scenes throughout the show. The set is well-lit, with lighting used to create different moods and atmospheres, with darker, moodier lighting for scenes in the castle and brighter, more cheerful lighting for scenes in the laboratory.

The set is well-designed and fits perfectly with the tone of the show. It is well-executed, with actors using the set to their advantage and moving fluidly around it to create dynamic and interesting scenes. For example, during the song “Sweet Transvestite, ” Dr Frank-N-Furter dances around the set, using the different set pieces to create a sense of movement and excitement. The set is a key part of the immersive experience that Rocky Horror is known for, transporting the audience to the world of the show, while helping to create a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.

the rocky horror tour 2023

The Rocky Horror Show has countless impressive song and dance numbers, delivered flawlessly by a cast that clearly revels in their roles. Their movements are fluid, and their voices are dynamic, adding excitement to the show. More than just entertainment, the songs serve to reveal the characters’ personalities, thoughts, and feelings, as well as drive the plot forward. With catchy tunes that stick in the audience’s heads and an invitation to join in the singing and dancing, the show is sure to create a participatory and unforgettable experience. The songs are a critical component in bringing the immersive world of Rocky Horror to life, both stimulating visually and aurally to transport the audience into its universe.

Charlie Ingles, the musical director of the 2023 Rocky Horror Tour, deserves high praise for bringing the eclectic mix of rock, pop, and classical music to life with a tight band and impressive vocals. The well-balanced sound and clear, easy-to-hear vocals are crucial to the show’s deserved success, as the music is a key element of the experience. Ingles’ excellent work ensures that the music is both enjoyable and memorable, adding to the show’s unique atmosphere.

The cast of the 2023 Rocky Horror Tour is equally exceptional, with each actor bringing their own take on their role. Stephen Webb steals the show as the charismatic and energetic Dr Frank-N-Furter, while Haley Flaherty shines as the vulnerable and innocent Janet as she’s very experienced in her role. Richard Meek’s uptight Brad and Kristian Lavercombe’s over-the-top Riff Raff are perfectly suited to their roles, and Lauren Ingram brings a sense of fun and energy to Columbia. Ben Westhead’s portrayal of Rocky is full of wonder and innocence. The ensemble cast is also noteworthy for their strong support of the leads. Their energetic performances and infectious joy make the show a delight to watch and are integral to its success!

Rachel Howells writes:

While a lot of people are travelling back from their Easter Break, the New Theatre was full of people in various outfits ready for the opening night of The Rocky Horror Show.   Opening a show on Easter Monday can’t be easy but I am certain the excitement in the auditorium before the show filtered through to the cast backstage.

The show follows the story of Brad and Janet, two squeaky clean college kids, when by twist of fate, their car breaks down outside a creepy mansion whilst on their way to visit their former college professor, they meet the charismatic Dr Frank’n’Furter. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, filled with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity.

Richard Meek is by far my most favourite Brad and seems perfectly cast next to Haley Flaherty who reprises the role of Janet.  Richard brings a nerdy strength to the character.

the rocky horror tour 2023

Stephen Webb excels as Frank giving a very moving performance especially during the song I’m Going Home .

Kristian Lavercombe reprises his role as Riff Raff, who, following more than 2000 performances around the world, manages to keep the character fresh and seems to be enjoying his time on stage.  Darcy Finden who made her professional debut last year as one of the Phantoms, plays the role of Columbia with maturity.

The band, under the musical direction of Charlie Ingles delighted with a superb sound that filled the auditorium.  The lighting design from Nick Richings was outstanding, it made the auditorium feel like a discotheque in some scenes. My one complaint is that The Rocky Horror Show is too short.  It’s such a brilliant night out it’s a real shame that the show is over so quickly. It is, however, a guaranteed party, combining science-fiction, horror, comedy and music while encouraging audience participation – meaning, of course, getting dressed-up in the most outrageous fancy dress! Let’s Do the Time-Warp Again!

Content Advisory

SYNOPSIS:  Pioneer Theatre Company’s favorite way to celebrate Halloween!  A groundbreaking cult musical and beloved glam rock tribute to B-horror films,  The Rocky Horror Show  returns with some of the most iconic characters in musical theatre history:  In this cult classic, sweethearts Brad and Janet, stuck with a flat tire during a stormy night, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker, a creepy butler, and a swath of drive-in usherettes and creepy sidekicks.  Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Dr. Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: his “monster” named, Rocky.

LANGUAGE:  There is a small amount of strong language. The production, written in 1973, also contains some outdated terms, which in 2023 might be deemed offensive: i.e. “transvestite.”

SEX:  The Dr. Frankenstein character, Frank-n-Furter, is a sexually fluid alien from “transsexual Transylvania” who seduces both Janet and Brad.

VIOLENCE:  As befits a horror movie, there is a gruesome murder and a fair amount of blood, all played to comic excess.

FOR WHICH AUDIENCES?   The Rocky Horror Show  is not for conservative audiences or pre-teen children. High school students have been embracing the movie for 40 years, but children should attend only at a parent’s discretion.  The film version ( The Rocky Horror Picture Show ) is rated R.
