Afternoon  As you arrive in Muscat, the capital city welcomes you with open arms. Begin your city tour with a cultural immersion at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a marvel of Islamic architecture. The sheer grandeur of the mosque and its intricate details offer a glimpse into Oman’s rich heritage.

Next, wander through the Mutrah Souq, a bustling market where the fragrance of exotic spices mingles with the colors of traditional Omani crafts. Allow yourself to get lost in the narrow alleys, discovering everything from vibrant textiles to intricately designed jewelry.

Evening  As the day progresses, head to Mutrah Corniche for a leisurely evening stroll along the waterfront. The panoramic views of the harbor and the Portuguese forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani create a serene atmosphere, especially as the sun begins its descent, casting warm hues over the city.

Choose from a range of accommodations in Muscat city to unwind, each offering its unique blend of Omani hospitality and modern comfort. Whether it’s a luxurious hotel or a cozy boutique guesthouse, let the first day of your weekend escape be a prelude to the adventures and Arabian nights that lie ahead.

Day 2: Muscat to Snake Canyon – An Adventurous Day Trip

Morning  Rise early for an exhilarating day trip from Muscat to Snake Canyon (also called Wadi Bimmah), nestled in the heart of Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains. The scenic 2-3 hour drive unveils the rugged beauty of the mountainous terrain, a stark contrast to the desert landscapes of Dubai. Upon reaching Snake Canyon, the stage is set for a day of canyoning adventure. Enlist the services of experienced guides who provide essential safety briefings and equip you for the day’s thrilling excursion. The canyon awaits, promising an adrenaline-pumping experience amidst towering cliffs and crystal-clear pools. If you’re looking for a little less thrill, you can make a trip to Wadi Shab & Wadi Tiwi on this day instead.

Venture into the heart of Snake Canyon, where each step brings you closer to nature’s architectural marvels. Navigate through narrow passages, conquer natural rock obstacles, and take the plunge into refreshing pools. The blend of excitement and natural beauty makes Snake Canyon a must-visit for adventure enthusiasts.

As midday approaches, find a picturesque spot within the canyon for a well-deserved picnic lunch. Surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Snake Canyon, recharge your energy for the afternoon session of canyoning.

Afternoon  With renewed vigor, resume your canyoning journey, exploring deeper into the canyon’s hidden corners. Marvel at unique rock formations shaped by the forces of nature, and relish the sense of accomplishment with each conquered section of the canyon.

As the sun begins its descent, casting shadows over the canyon walls, the play of light adds a touch of magic to the adventure. Capture these moments, and let the natural beauty of Snake Canyon leave an indelible mark on your memory.

Evening  As evening approaches, embark on the journey back to Muscat, reliving the day’s adventures. The scenic drive provides a contemplative space to reflect on the thrill of conquering Snake Canyon.

Back in Muscat, celebrate your conquest with a delightful dinner at one of the city’s renowned restaurants. Whether you choose traditional Omani cuisine or international fare, let the evening be a time of relaxation and recounting the day’s adrenaline-fueled escapade.

Oman is truly an adventurer’s paradise. Adrenaline junkies will find endless opportunities to explore the expansive sand dunes, vertical cliff edges, natural wadis, spooky caves and a lot more. Here are the best places to visit in Oman from Dubai if you’re looking for an adventure.

WADI ASH SHAB

Wadi Ash Shab in Oman

Oman is home to several wadis but the reason why Wadi Ash Shab is on our list of places to visit in Oman from Dubai is the truly thrilling experience it offers.

Wadi Ash Shab was also the host and final stop of the 2012 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. The cliffs of the wadi are ideal for treacherous, yet exciting cliff jumping. You can also visit the popular “keyhole”- a very narrow waterfilled cave nestled between rocks. You need to swim through a small opening to reach this last point of the trek.

Visitors also have to trek the mountains to reach the other picturesque pools in the wadi that have clear turquoise waters.

MAJLIS AL JINN CAVE

Top view of Majlis Al JInn Cave in Oman

The Majlis Al Jinn Cave is a true wonder and the second-largest cave chamber ever discovered in the world. This colossal cave chamber is not for the faint-hearted as it has some hair raising and heart-pounding thrills. One of the activities that adventure junkies will enjoy trying here is abseiling down a massive cave with specially crafted equipment.

Majlis Al Jinn is popular for base jumping and rock climbing but you need to have some amount of physical preparedness in order to experience these adventures. A guide will help you to conduct both activities safely.

The cave is lit up with an opening in the upper part of the cave, the light shines thickly across the massive chamber with the sound of the wind rustling through. This makes the visit to the cave a memorable experience.

Visiting Majlis Al Jinn or “spirits meeting place” is a surreal experience and a popular location, especially for base jumpers. Opt for Oman tour packages from Dubai or plan your own road trip to the country for the best adventure trip of your life.

SNAKE GORGE AT WADI BANI AWF

If you love trekking, hiking and cliff diving, the Snake Gorge at Wadi Bani Awf should be on your list of different places to visit in Oman from Dubai.

Locally Snake Gorge is known as Wadi Bimah and is located in the Wadi Bani Awf area in the Al Hajar Mountains .

The trek and 3-kilometre swim through a winding narrow channel end with a dive right into the bright green pools of the water-filled caves.

Natural water slides scrambling through huge boulders, land you into the turquoise water pools. As the name suggests, there are snakes in the waters, particularly in the narrow nooks and crannies, but most are non-poisonous and harmless. We still suggest that you proceed with caution while you are swimming.

Note: It’s best to avoid the area during heavy rainfall because Snake Gorge is prone to flash floods during heavy rains.

JEBEL SHAMS

Jabal Shams in Oman

No adventure itinerary in Oman is complete without a visit to Jebel Shams– the highest peak in the country.

Jebel Shams means “Sun Mountain” in Arabic. The peak is usually the first place in Oman to receive sunlight at dawn, according to the locals.

There are many hiking and trekking locations such as the Al Nakhur Rim Hike or The Balcony Walk through the W6 route. This route is the best way to explore the Al Nakhur Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Another popular hiking route for adventure buffs is the Al Khiyam to Wadi Ghul via the W6A route.

Oman - The Country Of Peace

The offerings of Oman are numerous, open, and generally ignored. They include soft-sand beaches and golden desert dunes, 16th-century forts and busy souqs, breathtaking mountains, and vast valleys. Due to its traditional culture and open-minded approach, visitors to this country can learn a lot about the Middle East by traveling there.

Oman offers a welcome reminder of an era that seems to have passed in the midst of the Arabian Gulf's dynamic states. The Sultanate is one of the best locations in the Gulf to see old Arabia because overdevelopment has yet to degrade its most breathtaking vistas and cultural traditions have remained impressively unaltered.

It is also significantly less congested than its more well-known counterparts on the Arabian Peninsula, allowing you to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness without having to share space with hundreds of other tourists. Oman is the best choice for people who want to visit the most traditional and hospitable Arab country. Planning a weekend trip to Oman is definitely a wise decision!

Inimitable Salalah Tour

Top tourist attractions in oman.

Oman's capital city blends natural and architectural splendor. It is home to stunning beaches such as Al Qurum and Al Bustan, as well as the Royal Opera House Muscat and a variety of lodging alternatives. You'll discover a unique pastime or a lovely natural area to appreciate wherever you go in the city. You can book a Muskat tour package for your weekend trip.

Salalah is a lovely city in southern Oman's Dhofar Governorate. It is well-known for its annual Khareef Festival, which takes place every year from July to September and celebrates the monsoon season by allowing the landscape to take center stage. Spend a few days, if feasible, savoring this magnificent nature hideaway. Salalah tour package is the most booked!

Muttrah Souq

The Muttrah Souq, a traditional market on the Muttrah Corniche in the Muscat Governorate, is made up of a number of tiny stores that sell Omani goods such as colorful fabric, traditional clothing, silver and gold jewelry, and mementos. It's a must-see attraction in Muscat and a fantastic location for photos.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

The most well-known mosque in the nation is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which was constructed in 2001 in Muscat's Bawshar neighborhood. The mosque is a true architectural marvel with its enormous golden dome, minarets, arches, engraved walls, adorned interior, special lamps, and centerpiece crystal chandelier.

Musandam Beaches

Oman's northernmost region, the Musandam Governorate, is divided from the rest of the nation by the United Arab Emirates. There are numerous lovely white-sand beaches there because the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf encircle most of the region. One of the most well-liked stretches of sand in Musandam is Khasab beach.

Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserves

Eastern Oman's Ras Al Hadd is home to the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. With almost 20,000 females returning here each year to lay their eggs, it serves as a natural reserve for endangered green turtles. In addition to Ras Al Jinz's wonderful beach, clear waters, and golden sands, you may enjoy seeing the turtles dig their nests, lay their eggs, and even watch the young turtles hatch and return to the sea. In the early morning hours, the reserve organizes turtle viewings.

Wadi Bani Khalid

A lovely corner of paradise is Wadi Bani Khalid. A spring (ayn, in Arabic) and various water pools can be seen inside the wadi, which is located in the Ash Sharqiyah Region. The spring flows continuously inside the wadi all year long. A number of settlements and vibrant plantations may be found in Wadi Bani Khalid. The wadi seems like a painting due to its breathtaking scenery, which includes unusual red rock formations.

Forts and Castles

Through its various forts and castles, Oman's diverse legacy is on display, allowing visitors to understand and appreciate its ancient history and culture. There are numerous must-see locations around Oman, such as Nakhal Fort, Nizwa Fort, Jibreen (Jabreen) Castle, Al Hazm Fort, Al Rustaq Fort, and many more.

Masirah Island

The biggest island in Oman is Masirah Island, which is located off the country's eastern coast. You may still see a few abandoned ships at Ras Hilf, the island's capital town, which was formerly a significant shipbuilding center. Traditional textiles and fishing are now the main industries in this country.

Oman's Scrumptious Cuisine That You Must Try

Omani cuisine is a delectable fusion of spices, marinades, and herbs with influences from Indian, Persian, North African, and Mediterranean cuisines. Chicken, lamb, and rice are classics here, seasoned with saffron, ginger, and nutmeg for a flavor unlike any other! All types of fish are devoured due to its vast coastline bordering the Arabian Sea, and the shark is a delicacy!

Omani cuisine differs from that of the rest of the Arabian Peninsula in that it is less spicy and is rarely served heatedly. The following are some of the most delicious and traditional Omani dishes:

This meal, also known as Kabsa, consists of saffron-flavored rice cooked with spicy red or white meat. Majboos, which translates to "be engaged," is almost always provided at big occasions like weddings and engagements. Saffron and cardamom are the two main ingredients in this cuisine. The beef is cooked first with onion and garlic, then with the extra ingredients. The rice is cooked separately before being mixed with the meat, turning it golden and creamy.

Shuwa is an Omani celebratory dish that is only served on rare occasions such as Eid. During the holiday, many Omani families start cooking their Shuwa on the first day and finish it on the second. The preparation of this traditional Omani dish is a lengthy and intricate process. On Eid, the meat, which is usually lamb, goat, or camel, is marinated in a variety of spices. Each household has its own recipe that includes spices such as coriander, nutmeg, and cumin. After that, the meat is wrapped in banana leaves and put in a sand oven. Before being dug out and eaten, it is cooked underground for a day or two. The meat is soft and covered in crispy spices when it is pulled out of the ground. On the side, there is tomato sauce and rice.

Mouthwatering Mashuai is yet another delectable meal you may get in Oman! Kingfish is roasted in this recipe, and the rice is flavorful with lemon.

Mushaltat, a soft flatbread loaded with cheese, meat, spinach, or honey, is a well-known delicacy in Oman. Refined wheat flour is used to make the bread, which is then kneaded into thin cakes, filled with fillings, and baked for around 5 minutes.

Halwa is a sweet, sticky, and gelatinous Omani delicacy made with brown sugar, honey, eggs, and a variety of spices. It contains a variety of flavors, like rosewater, almonds, chocolate, etc. Several halwas also contain Omani dates. Halwas can survive for more than four months because of the time-consuming procedure of slowly cooking it over a wood fire. Kahwa is frequently used in conjunction with it as an additional sign of kindness.

Dubai to Oman – The Epic Musandam Cruise Day Trip

Almost everyone who visits Dubai visits one or more of the neighboring Emirates, but few take the trip from Dubai to Oman. There are several routes to pick from, a popular one being Dubai to Dibba because you can take advantage of the Gulf of Oman and experience some dramatic scenery. If you are visiting Dubai, consider the Dubai to Dibba route.

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our  disclosure and privacy policy for more information.

Getting from Dubai to Oman via Dibba

Let’s start with this is not a trip I recommend solo. Don’t rent a car and head out. In my opinion, renting a car would be a massive mistake . Oman has one of the world’s highest death rates from traffic accidents. And, unless you’ve already got a visa for Oman, you will run into problems.  The logistics alone are a huge reason you need to book a tour of some form to take advantage of this trip.

Map of Dubai and Oman

Dubai to Oman Map

We booked this trip through our hotel concierge, although there are now many day trip options you can pick from . If you try to book this through your hotel, eyebrows will be raised. I felt that sending tourists out of the Emirates and over to Oman to spend money is not exactly a goal for the Dubai tourism industry. I had to insist they book this for us, which is not advertised locally.

If you research this route, you will get mixed opinions and views. Disregard this and go for it. If you’ve made it to Dubai, this day trip is something you will appreciate.  If you’re a thrill-seeker or like to go off the beaten path, this is all you. Or, if you are a collect a country stamp type of person, this is for you.

So, let’s get into the details:

Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman, is an Arab country that borders The United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia. The northern section of the Peninsula Coast separates the mainland and juts into the Strait of Hormuz. This region is separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates. Oman is a Muslim country, and the Musandam region is often cited as beautiful as the Norwegian Fjords .

Getting To Oman From Dubai

I assume you read my earlier advice and took it to heart. And that you are going to book a trip through a tour operator. If you don’t, good luck, and let us know how it goes!

The tours start early, and it’s a long day out. You’ll be picked up at around 7:00 am and then make the usual rounds to pick up others joining you once the bus or van is full – off across the desert to the border.

FYI – The tour will also return you to your hotel.

Tours From Dubai to Oman

Crossing the border from dubai to oman.

This might seem odd or funny, but this was one of the highlights for me. It’s a tad shady. First, you’ll stop before the border to inspect your papers. The tour operator on site will scan your passport, check all the details, and give you the equivalent of a day pass, not an actual visa . Ironically, you provide all your information in advance, but it’s rechecked. Not a bad thing. This ensures your ability to cross the border. From there, your bus will proceed into the line at the border.

It’s as you would imagine – sketchy. Oman police are dripping in rifles and an excess of other military weapons, ready for trouble should it occur. Once your buses arrive at the Oman border, an agent boards the bus to check that everyone’s papers are in order. It’s intimidating but exciting! They did not review every passenger’s documents, it was random, but they checked at least half of the passenger’s paperwork. And we had someone on board that was grilled in broken English about his previous travels. The Oman border control found his travels either exciting or suspicious.

We passed through with no issues and went to Dibba port, where the fun began.

Note: You cannot take any photographs while crossing the boarder

Dubai to Oman

Riding the Dhow in Oman

One of the most compelling reasons to take this tour is to ride the Dhow. A dhow is a traditional Arabic boat. The Dhow is the generic name of several traditional ships with one or more masts common to the region.

Don’t get me wrong; you can ride a dhow in Dubai, but let’s be honest – everyone who’s been to Dubai has done this. The boats are the same; however, the landscape is dramatically different. Oman has the most rugged and beautiful coastlines in the world. I’ll add they are also remote and then some.

As soon as the Dhow takes off, you start to see why people compare this landscape to Norway. One difference is the climate, Norway’s cooler, and while the water is piercing clear in Oman, it’s a Caribbean blue.

Imagine yourself relaxing on a fabulous traditional Arabic boat in the middle of nowhere, seeing the mountains of Musandam. Better imagine what this looks like when the sun sets. I caught many pictures with the Dhow in the sun’s background, and cheesy as it might sound, the views are priceless.

Dubai to Oman Sunset

You’ll cruise for an hour or so, and then you will pull into a cove where you will get to explore the beach, the water, and all the other traditions you would expect from a water-based trip.

Activities on the Dhow

Here is what to expect in terms of choices of things to do:

  • Snorkel the beautiful blue water
  • Speed boat blasting
  • Banana boat riding
  • Take the speed board to the limestone (white rock) and tour inside the caves.
  • Sunbathe on the beach, or explore the beach
  • Jump or swing off the Dhow and splash into the water
  • Handline fishing

We opted to explore the beach and admire the vistas; we did the caves, and Brian tried hand-line fishing.

Mussandam Cruise Line Fishing

You get to spend about two hours at the chosen cove, and then it’s time to return to the Dhow. Back on board, you’ll be treated to a traditional lunch that’s buffet style. The food was adequate but not spectacular. Don’t expect to be wowed; it’s not a feast. Add to this that there are people with many worldwide – all with different cultural norms. Creating a line and lining up (or bum-rushing) the line will be a factor. Some people tried to jump in the queue. They were barging in as if there was not enough food for all. This concept’s not new; I’ve experienced it worldwide.  I remind all to get in line, and I’m firm enough to set the tone.

Food in hand, it’s time to lay back on the dhows cushions and take in the sunset. A quiet and calm trip; it’s not a booze cruise you would take in the Caribbean . The low key with almost all people opting for the layout.

What You Need When Visiting Oman

What you need to know about a trip from dubai to oman, visas and day permits.

  • Unless you do a day tour, you need a visa to visit Oman .
  • If you take a tour, you do not need a visa, and you will get a day pass subject to your return on the same day.
  • Before touring, you will have to provide copies of your passport, and you need six months left on the passport to enter.
  • A copy of your passport must be sent 48 hours before the trip to arrange entry.
This is important. You can’t arrange this trip the day before you need to book this at least two days (sometimes three) in advance.

General Tips For Travel From Dubai To Oman

  • Day trips from Dubai start at around $75 and go up to $500. The cost depends on the tour you pick. Essentially, the price is dominated by choosing a shared vs. private tour.
  • Tours provide everything you need except sunscreen, including snorkeling gear, life jackets, water, etc.
  • You can wear a bathing suit on the beach, other than this, be moderate.
  • You do not need currency or cash. Everything you need is provided on the boat.
  • This is a long day, at least ten hours. In our case, it was for twelve hours.
  • Non-alcoholic drinks are included, and you can buy alcohol on most tours.
  • Depending on where you dock, there is a chance the locals will be unimpressed by your arrival. We experienced this, and it was comical. A love-hate relationship was exposed before our eyes, and the locals tried to chase off the tour company.
  • Taking pictures of Arab Women is considered offensive, and before you take a local photograph, you must ask for permission.
Note: Some of the beaches have been littered by tourists. It’s sad to see and it’s the main gripe that people cite following this tour. It’s shocking to be somewhere so remote, barely inhabited and stunning yet dressed in trash. Unfortunately, this is a concept I’ve seen in several countries . If you take this tour, please do not leave any trash behind.

Driving from Dubai to Dibba is approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.

You do not need a visa if you take a day trip. You will need a visa if you do anything other than a same-day return trip.

You can apply for a  visa here.

Yes, some people do speak English, but it’s not universal.

Yes, you can, but it’s not recommended.

A 10-day tourist visa costs five to ten riyals, which is approximately $1.50 – $3.00

Yes, if you book a day trip through a travel agency.

Closing Thoughts

The typical traditional Dubai tourist rarely leaves The Emirates during their stay. This is understandable. The Middle East has a reputation for volatility, which steers many from considering branching out. I will tell you that you will be fine if you use a reputable tour company and have paperwork in order. The tour company will take great care of you and ensure you cross and return without problems.

Most important, you will have experienced something that few do. Lastly, if you get fortunate, you’ll experience the debacle between those living in the mountains, sounding the beaches, and the tour operators.

Aside from the cove, what else can we see/esperience in this day trip

Hi Lyn. For this specific trip it’s just the cove :) Nikki

Thnx for posting! Would this trip be recommendable for a family with two little (4 and 3) children?

There were no kids on my trip, so I can’t say for sure, but I don’t see any reason (other than the border crossing) why kids could not take the trip. Nikki

Such a nice post. This is really a trip I would make. Oman is a country, I’m dying to visit. And I’m always fascinated by border crossings. Besides that I have never been to Dubai, I only know the airport because of the many transfers. The dhow ride sounds like lots of fun…:-)Thanks for sharing your story.

MUSANDAM – A FUN DAY TRIP FROM DUBAI TO OMAN

musandam tour from dubai

It took me four visits to Dubai before I finally reserved a full day to see Oman. Okay, I just got a tiny glimpse of the northern part of Oman, but it honestly is one of the top day trips from Dubai. That is why I added it to my “50 top things to do in Dubai” list .

In this post, you will find out what to expect if you book a trip to Oman and Musandam for a day.

The Musandam Peninsula is located in the northern part of Oman, about 200 kilometers from Dubai. On your way, you will also cross Ras Al-Khaimah, which is also a perfect base for taking a day trip to Oman.

DAY TRIP FROM DUBAI TO OMAN / MUSANDAM

There are different Musandam tour packages from Dubai, and it really depends on what you are interested to see and how much you like to spend. I will add a few different tours later for you.

musandam oman from dubai

Why Visit the Musandam Peninsula?

The Musandam Peninsula is a beautiful place in Oman – very authentic and full of history, especially when compared to the hustle, bustle, and general glitziness of Dubai.

Getting there takes a while, but you will be rewarded with boat trips, lovely scenery, and incredible views of the stark limestone mountains.

However, although Musandam is getting more popular these days and attracts many tourists from Ras Al-Khaimah and Dubai, it still retains its originality and natural feeling despite having a touristy touch to it.

To start your Musandam tour from Dubai, you can either a) travel by car to Khasab, which is about a three-hour drive from Dubai, or b) do a guided tour  (like I did), and then you will be picked up from the hotel.

A guided tour to Oman from Dubai is probably the easiest way. You could also fly from Dubai to Khasab if you prefer, but I actually recommend getting there by bus.

You can stay there, overnight as well: I personally think a day trip is enough, but if you can decide to stay longer you can book your accommodation in Oman.

What to Know

We were picked up from our hotel by the tour company, and after picking up some other people, we drove for about three hours to get to the border of Oman .

From there, it took about an hour to get through border security to where our dhow waited for us in Khasab, a village just beyond the border.

Packing List Musandam

If you have a visa for the UAE, you shouldn’t need an extra visa for Oman, but you definitely have to bring your original passport with you and take a copy of your passport.

It wasn’t needed for us, but it was recommended by our tour guide.

To make the most of your Oman trip from Dubai, it’s also important to take everything you’ll need with you: swimming gear, sun lotion, etc., and of course your camera.

Dhow Cruise from Khasab

We did a Musandam dhow cruise from Khasab. The dhows are the original Arabic boats which are decorated with adorable Arabic cushions and rugs.

Click here to find the tour we did.

Dubai Musandam tour packages

You can choose to sit on the top of the dhow or the ground level, and then you start your trip!

Food and drink are often included , it does depend on the tour operator, but most tour operators have similar offers.

Ours included fresh fruit, water, juices, tea, and coffee all day long. Then for lunch, there was a small buffet, and soft drinks were served. It was nothing exciting and all quite simple, but it was definitely enough for the day.

Khasab tours from Dubai

If you are looking for something completely tranquil, then tours like this might not be the perfect choice for you as there is often music on the boat, which I personally enjoyed. When I went, it was a mixture of international, Indian, and US music.

We sailed for about thirty minutes traveling past the mountains and what they call the fjords (although they aren’t officially fjords). Once at the beach, we had the option to hop into the water or to take a small boat to get us right up to the beach.

I really enjoyed my full-day trip to Oman but to be honest, I was a little bit disappointed by the water. If you visit Oman to see the pristine clear water you see in the pictures sometimes, you will be disappointed.

The water was not very clear, it was oily, and the area smelled like oil, so bear this in mind before you go.

Activities in Musandam

Musandam tour operators in Dubai

The beach, although nice, was a little bit dirty. Sadly, there was trash lying around where people had just thrown rubbish on the beach. Of course it is the fault of the tourists, but it would have been better if there had been a big rubbish bin.

Guys, seriously- take your trash back to the boat if you do not see a rubbish bin. No rubbish bin is no excuse for being a stupid tourist.

We had about an hour at the beach/boat, and there were options to do banana boat riding (which was included in the price) or a speedboat trip which was really enjoyable, although it was a short ride of fewer than five minutes.

Banana Boat Riding in Musandam Activities in Oman

No trip would be perfect without food – and so these tours also include a buffet and more music, and it was an enjoyable atmosphere with around thirty other people on the boat. The buffet is simple, some rice, noodles, salads, and a few more things (including meat) but okay for that day.

Khasab tours Dubai

Musandam Scenery

In total, we spent about five hours there, and then we sailed back, again through the “fjords” – it was kind of really beautiful with the fog and the mountains, and then we headed back to the border.

Oman Trip from Dubai

Just before that, some people had the chance to go fishing from the boat.

Best Musandam tours from Dubai

Finally, we headed back to the bus and through the border, which took another hour, and after that, we headed back to Dubai.

Is it worth visiting Musandam from Dubai?

In total, the day trip took us about 14 hours, around six and a half of it on the bus, which was a lot longer than I expected.

So, if you know that and you don’t expect the crystal clear perfect water, then a Dubai to Oman day trip is perfect.

The prices are reasonable when you consider that there is food and drink included, and you will not find anything like this in Dubai for that price.

Day trips to Oman

Oman’s capital city, Muscat has transformed over the past decades but still retains a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere, as well as many reminders of its long and cosmopolitan history. The city carries its charm compared to other Arabian countries because of its unique culture and heritage. In this blog, we will let you know of the best day trips to Oman from Dubai and the details you would need to know.

In case you wish to drive to Muscat from Dubai or Abu Dhabi or take a day trip to the fascinating Arabian city of Muscat, here are the details you would have to keep in mind.

tour a oman desde dubai

What is the distance from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to Muscat by car and by flight?

Muscat is at a driveable distance from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it takes about 5-6 hours from Abu Dhabi and Dubai to cover 500km. The air travel (bird fly) shortest distance between Oman and Dubai is 414 km and takes 1 hour and 10 mins. You would also need to consider the time to check in at the airport. Dubai operates daily flights from the Dubai International Airport to Muscat.

What documents do you need to enter Oman by Car from UAE?

Since you will be crossing the international border of UAE to enter Oman, you will need:

  • A valid passport (with 6 months validity)
  • Payment in AED for the exit tax from the UAE
  • Visa and fee to enter Oman (AED or Omani Royal)

If you are driving by your own car, you would additionally need:

  • Proof of ownership of the vehicle (or proof that you have permission to drive the vehicle if the owner is not present in the car)
  • Insurance that covers your vehicle in both the UAE & Oman

Where can you cross the border to enter Oman?

Ignoring Musandam and other enclaves, the main border crossings open to all tourists and non-GCC citizens from Dubai are:

Wadi Hatta – Al Wajajah – closest to Dubai & Sharjah. Note the E44 Hatta route is not an option for tourists, program Hatta Fort Hotel in your GPS/Google Maps/Waze for the most accurate route.

Kathm al Shukhla, Al Ain – note the Oman crossing is in Buraimi, some further 30km away! As this is a popular truck route option, it can be the quieter, easy route for cars.

Meyzad – Hafeet, Al Ain – closer crossing for Abu Dhabi residents and if returning from Nizwa / Jabal Shams direction.

Below are the day tours that you can take from Dubai to Oman:

  • Day Trip to Musandam and Dibba Port

Day trip to Musandam is a wonderful way to visit pristine natural beauty of Oman. Musandam has an unspoilt landscape with stunning views and water. Oman’s pristine natural beauty.

Dibba is a coastal town in Musandam, Oman and is home to some natural scenic beauty. Musandam is surrounded by sea on one side and the UAE on the other side. It takes about two and a half hours to drive from Dubai to Musandam through Ras al Khaimah, to get to Dibba. You don’t need to get your passports stamped if you are visiting Dibba from Dubai. The drive doesn’t feel long because you see a great view that adorns the route.

The Dibba fort, built during the time of the Portuguese still stands in Dibba. The landscape of Dibba is for those who love nature. This place is full of natural waters and fjords suitable for fun activities like snorkelling, hand line fishing, and swimming. A dhow cruise is essential to enjoy these emerald waters. Day Trip to Sohar

Suhar or Sohar is the capital and largest city of the Al Batinah North Governorate in Oman. An ancient capital of the country that once served as an important Islamic port town, Suhar has also been credited as the mythical birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor. If you are heading to Oman for a day trip or a weekend getaway, you can also visit the Sohar town along with Muscat.

There is plenty to see and do in Sohar- the handicrafts markets, the fort and much more. If you are traveling to Oman, then you must experience shopping at the Sohar Handicraft Souq. You can find this in the region of Al Hajra. The Sohar Fort is one of the most exquisite historic landmarks in Oman where you get to truly understand the life of soldiers in the early 14th century. There is a museum inside so tourists can get a glimpse of the local life in Oman. You can also find a tunnel inside the tower, which was used as an escape route at times of a siege. My first taste of Oman was part of a larger trip around the Middle East, where I traveled extensively as a solo female. I was traveling overland to Oman from Dubai – a place much more familiar with tourists and expats in general.

Admittedly I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect once I crossed the border. Oman is much less traversed than UAE in general, so I assumed that a solo female in Oman could potentially cause some issues.

But I went for it anyway and – spoiler alert – the Musandam Peninsula is one of the most rugged and beautiful parts of all of Oman.

If you are spending time in the UAE and are looking for day trips from Dubai , or, are just looking to dip your toes into what Oman has to offer, then a Musandam trip is for you. Read on to learn how to plan a trip to Musandam, Oman and what things to do once you get there.

Where is Musandam, Oman?

The Musandam Peninsula is split from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates. The Musandam Peninsula borders with the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah , which also offers plenty of adventurous activities in the mountains.

In 1971, when the United Arab Emirates was formed, Oman retained ownership of the small patch of land on the northern Gulf Coast. To give up this peninsula would be to lose the strategic advantage of the northern coast and port, across the sea from Iran.

So, while it is still part of Oman, the Musandam Peninsula sits separate from the rest of the country.

Three goats grazing underneath an Acacia Tree in Oman.

How To Get To Musandam, Oman from Dubai, UAE?

It is absolutely possible to rent a car and drive from Dubai to the Musandam Peninsula.

Depending on where you are in Dubai, it will take around 3 hours to drive, passing through Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah , to the Al Qir border post. This is the only border crossing to enter Musandam for tourists.

If you rent a car, you do need to plan ahead and work with your rental company to make everything legal BEFORE you drive there. On the border you will need:

  • Proof of Omani insurance purchased through the rental company. The car rental company needs to know in advance and include on your contract that this is allowed. It will be checked at the border.
  • NOC letter (No Objection Certificate) from the rental company.
  • Bring your passport. It must have 6 months validity remaining upon entry.
  • Many nationalities can receive a visa on arrival. If you are not eligible for this, you must obtain one in advance.
  • You will pay a UAE Exit fee of 35 AED and an Oman entrance fee of 50 AED. Total charges 85 AED per person (approximately $23 USD, for reference).

The border is one of the most simple I have ever passed through, though on holidays I’ve heard the lines can get long.

If you are not quite feeling brave enough to plan for self-driving on your Musandam trip, don’t worry. You could a) hire a driver to take you through the crossing or b) pre-plan your entire Musandam trip as part of a tour group. Whichever way you decide to go, I do urge you to take this trip to Musandam, Oman.

Things to Do in Musandam, Oman

Firstly, I urge you to spend three nights on the Musandam Peninsula, at minimum. Each of the three suggestions below could easily fill an entire day each. I left after four days, feeling like there was still more I could explore.

Read on for my suggestions on what to do in Musandam, Oman!

Jebel al Harim map in Musandam, Oman.

1. Visit Jebel al Harim in the Hajar Mountains.

This is by far the most memorable place I visited in the entire Musandam Peninsula.

“Jebel al Harim” in English translates to Mountain of Women. Long ago, local women would trek up to the safety of the mountains when the village men were off on extended fishing and pearling trips. The highest peak of the peninsula sits at 2087m tall.

You May Also Like: Visiting Suwaidi Pearl Farm in Ras Al Khaimah

Rows of mountains on the way to Jebel Harim, under a pink and blue sunset.

You can still catch a glimpse of a few village tribes living in the mountains – I saw them trekking up or down three different times while I was here. It’s fascinating to see modern people still living in this ancient way in the harsh mountains.

After a while of zig-zagging up curving roads, you will reach the summit.

What really struck me – and actually what drew me to this corner of Oman to begin with – is that you can find perfectly preserved fish and marine fossils from the bottom of the ocean, now standing atop the highest peak of these Omani mountains!

The fossils are plentiful. You will see fish, trilobites, clams, and other documentation of long-gone creatures all over the rocks of Jebel al Harim, and it is fascinating.

Fish fossil seen atop Jebel Harim, Oman.

There is even a vertical cliff wall showcasing crystal clear silhouettes of starfish, shells, and crabs. This used to be the ocean floor and now here it is, high in the mountains of Oman!

Do not skip Jebel al Harim in the Hajar Mountains. You do need a 4WD vehicle so it is wise to book a tour for this trip . An added benefit for having a guide in these mountains is that they know exactly where to find the most stunning views and fossils.

2. Take a Dhow Cruise in Khasab.

Traditional dhow cruises are available in either half-day or full-day excursions through the fjords of Musandam. That’s right, I called them “fjords”. This area off the coast of Oman is often referred to as the “Norway” of the Middle East, and it’s easy to see why once you are standing in awe of the stunning scenery!

Tall rocky cliffs, glistening water, and the open sea. Perfection.

Crystal blue waters of the Persian Gulf, seen off the coast of Oman.

On the dhow cruises, you will glide through the water, most likely seeing dolphins swim next to the boat as you go. The dolphins chased my boat for a long while!

A dolphin leaps out of the Persian Gulf during a Musandam Oman trip.

Many of the dhow tours offer snorkeling and swimming near Telegraph Island, in crystal blue water, so don’t forget your swimsuit.

I recommend a full day tour over the half day tour, because there is just so much to see. The full day tours typically include lunch on the boat and half-day tours do not.

Also, most tours include round-trip transfer from your hotel (or even to the airport I hear), so be sure to let the tour operator know beforehand where your pickup and dropoff will be located.

The ride was absolutely gorgeous and you may be shocked at just how clear the water in the Persian Gulf can be. Definitely worth the trip.

3. Explore Khasab City.

Khasab is the capital city of Musandam. Here you can learn a bit more about typical local life. If you have a car, this is easy to do solo, as Khasab is not extremely large. If not, there are plenty of tour groups to show you around.

Khasab is well-known for it’s fishing activities. Overlooking the Persian Gulf, Khasab has a population of about 18,000 people.

The most interesting stops in the city are the Fort of Khasab, dating back to the 16th century, which now showcases traditional Omani handicrafts. Also, the Khasab Castle showcases traditional Omani life, including thatch huts that you are free to explore.

A traditional hut in Oman on my Musandam trip.

Walking through the old and new souks in Khasab is enjoyable, whether you purchase souvenirs or not. If you do plan to buy, be sure to haggle and get the best price possible.

Don’t worry too much if it feels uncomfortable or is not part of your own culture; decide for yourself what price you are willing to pay for any given item, and be prepared to walk away if the shop owner won’t budge.

There is also plentiful tasty and traditional food in Khasab, so plan to stay for lunch or dinner (or both!). I had a very tasty baba ghanouj with pomegranate seeds on top, among other vegetarian staples. Delicious.

Whether you are living in Dubai or just visiting, a Musandam, Oman excursion trip is an excellent choice to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. The drive is short and straightforward, and border officials (as well as car rental agencies) have dealt with tourists enough to have a smooth system worked out.

Though the Musandam Peninsula of Oman is a popular weekend trip from Dubai , the mountains and sea are so large that you can fee like you have the entire place to yourself. Actually, I don’t think I saw another vehicle the entire day I was in the Hajar Mountains. Talk about off-the-beaten-path!

My entire trip was relaxing, awe-inspiring, and simply begging me to return again. Whether you travel solo on your Musandam trip or travel through Oman with a tour guide, this is a spectacular place to spend several peaceful days. As I write this, I’m already dying to go back to Oman – and I can promise that I absolutely will!

Heavy rains lash Middle East, disrupting flights in Dubai after killing 20 in region

Authorities and communities across the United Arab Emirates were clearing debris on Wednesday after heavy rain subsided late on Tuesday.

Dubai, the Middle East's financial centre, has been paralysed by torrential rain that has caused floods across the UAE and Bahrain, leaving 19 dead in Oman and at least one in the UAE.

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest air hub for international passengers, diverted scores of incoming flights amid the flooding. DBX was expecting more than 100 flight arrivals on Tuesday evening.

But the airport announced a halt to arrivals before announcing a "gradual resumption" more than two hours later.

Videos on social media showed planes taxiing across an apron flooded with standing water.

Departure flights remained in operation during the evening but were plagued with delays and cancellations. Roads to the airport were also badly flooded.

Similar scenes were repeated across Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE as the oil-rich Gulf state, better known for its arid climate and intense summer heat, reeled from the storm.

Year's worth of rain in 24 hours

Flagship shopping centres Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both suffered flooding.

Water was ankle-deep in at least one Dubai Metro station, according to images posted on social media.

Some roads collapsed, residential communities were hit by heavy flooding and many householders reported leaks from roofs, doors and windows.

Schools were shut across the UAE and were expected to remain closed on Wednesday, when further storms are forecast. Dubai's government also extended remote working for its employees into Wednesday.

Some inland areas of the UAE recorded more than 80 millimetres of rain over the 24 hours to 8am, approaching the annual average of about 100mm.

An SUV splashes through standing water on a road with the Burj Al Arab luxury hotel seen in the background in Dubai.

The National Center for Meteorology "urged residents to take all the precautions … and to stay away from areas of flooding and water accumulation".

The Asian Champions League football semifinal between the UAE's Al Ain and Saudi side Al Hilal, due to be hosted in Al Ain, was postponed for 24 hours because of the weather.

Climate-fuelled flooding

Bahrain, to the UAE's north-west, was also hit by heavy rain and flooding after being pummelled by thunder and lightning overnight.

"I like to play in the rain but for the first time it scares me," said nine-year-old Ali Hassan, as he helped his mother clear water from outside their house in Bahrain's capital, Manama.

The storms descended on the UAE, Bahrain and parts of Qatar after hitting Oman, where they caused deadly floods and left dozens stranded.

A child's body was recovered on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 18 with two people missing, emergency authorities told the official Oman News Agency.

Nine schoolchildren and three adults died when their vehicles were swept away in flash floods, the news agency reported on Sunday.

Both Oman and the UAE, which hosted last year's COP28 UN climate talks, have previously warned that global warming is likely to lead to more flooding.

Friederike Otto, a leader in the field of assessing the role of climate change on specific extreme weather events, said it was likely that global warming played a part in this week's rain.

"It is highly likely that the deadly and destructive rain in Oman and Dubai was made heavier by human-caused climate change," said Ms Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London.
