I was pleasantly surprised on how many activities had been planned and how well coordinated everything was. Our guide Carolina was great, knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating, and she handled every situation in a professional and competent manner. I was somewhat puzzled at some of the itinerary choices. The first day meeting in Bogota was at 2 pm, when she talked about the things to do in the city (also sent us an email of points of interest) and we afterward had a tour of the neighborhood also pointing out places of interest to visit; however, after that we only had time for dinner and then the following day we left around 11 for the next town. There was absolutely no time to do any of the wonderful things she suggested. My husband and I had gotten there the day before and we got to do a few things on our own. It would have made more sense to meet at 10 or 11 in the morning to leave us more time to explore, or spend and extra day in Bogota. Also the following day we did not get to Salento until the afternoon after flying there, and, again, upon arrival we met and had the town tour to point out wonderful places to eat, listen to music, shop, etc, but did not have any time to do any of those things. I had a lot of fun playing the game of tejo with the group, but was very frustrated that the itinerary did not leave time for anything else in the town except for a 15 minute quick shopping stop. The town was so pretty and there was so much to see it was sad to leave so soon. I think if we had left Bogota early in the morning we would have had more time in Salento. The hike to Cocora valley was the highlight of the trip. It was beautiful and the guide Luis was great. Also the stay in the hacienda and tour of coffee plantation was excellent. Another puzzling part of the itinerary was to put us through a very long bus ride to Medellin that ended being 14 hours long. I get that the circumstances were out of control of the guide and the company (there was an accident ahead with two trucks), but it was already known that there was road construction which already slowed the trip considerably. Adding to that the fact that the trucks were recklessly driving up and down steep hills in construction areas led me to believe that the accident was just waiting to happen, and also put us at risk. Carolina did an excellent job on keeping us calm, but it was also very hard on her and us to had to go through this. It would had made a lot more sense to just fly to the Medellin and avoid wasting an entire day.We loved Medellin, the trip to Santa Helena to the flower farm, and Cartagena. Apart from some of the drawbacks me and my husband had a wonderful trip full of memorable experiences. The hotels were all good. I highly recommend this trip!

We loved the entire Trek to the Lost City in Colombia, the range of sites, climates, topography, landscape and altitudes was immensely rewarding. The program was intense but not overly. Always something of interest, but with enough down-time. Very well planned, and the opportunity to see quite a lot of famous places on the western site in Colombia. Definitely we recommend you guys to everyone we know. I will contact you again if we decide to travel back to South America next year.

What people love about Bogota to Cartagena Tours

Excellent. Thanks ☺️
This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & Martin really tried his best to accommodate me, I am so grateful. Unfortunately I had an emergency & had to leave on day 4 so my trip was disrupted. I would love to return to Columbia in the future. This was an action packed itinerary. I highly recommend this tour & tour guide Martin to anyone who is active & loves to explore.

Explore the beating heart of Colombia's capital city

tour bogota cartagena

Bogota is the capital city of Colombia. Bogota's famous colonial neighbourhood of La Candelaria contains most of the historic sites, museums, ancient churches and central government buildings. Practically every street corner in La Candelaria marks some important event in Colombian history and most buildings retain their colonial architecture and charm.

Visit a Spectacular Architectural Masterpiece

tour bogota cartagena

The small town of Zipaquira is famous for its salt mines and for the Salt Cathedral now built inside the network of monumental chambers and tunnels that were left behind when commercial mining operations ceased. This cathedral is unlike any other in the world, in terms of its innovative architecture. It was opened in 1995 and represents an eclectic mix of religion and architecture to maximise protection from the ever-present risks of working in a mine. The walk-through Stations of the Cross in the mine are a poignant representation of Jesus' last steps, and they culminate in a three-part cavernous subterranean cathedral.

Get lost in the romantic atmosphere of Cartagena

tour bogota cartagena

Located on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena de Indias is one of the most fascinating, romantic and beautiful colonial cities in Latin America. This UNESCO World Heritage site is full of history, colourful streets and great people, making it a fairy tale city of romance.

Learn how to fish with locals in La Boquilla

tour bogota cartagena

La Boquilla is a small fishing village located about 7 km north of Cartagena. The town sits on the northern tip of a narrow peninsula, bordered by the sea on one side and the Ciénaga de Tesca on the other. We will canoe through a mangrove forest and learn about the history and culture of this fishing town while mastering local fishing techniques using a net and crab traps.

Immerse yourself in the lake's mystic atmosphere while soaking in the beautiful surroundings of majestic mountains and bright-green pastures. Then, we will go to Zipaquira to visit the spectacular Salt Cathedral built inside the extensive caves of an old salt mine. uncover colombia really covers colombia

My wife and I had been interested in visiting Colombia largely because my father worked in Barranquilla in the early to mid-1960s and I had not been back since then. I found Uncover Colombia online and entered into email conversations with Nidia Penagos about designing a trip. The result was an exceptional experience... – John, January 2020

colombia excels

Uncover Colombia is the best travel agency we have ever used, and we have traveled to many different countries and used many different agencies... The standout person was Nidia. She organized our trip to Colombia perfectly. We asked for different things to be done in our 11 days in Colombia. She included every place using aeroplanes and cars as modes of transportation. – Marla, January 2020

great colombia private tour company

I can highly recommend Uncover Colombia. I used the company for a week-long solo trip to Colombia spanning three cities: Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena. They did a wonderful job for me, providing English-speaking guides in each of the cities and arranging transportation to various sites and internal flights from city to city... – Will, December 2019

We used this company for two tours while in Bogota. They are great to work with and communication was amazing. If looking for someone to see Colombia definitely check out this company. – Kevin, October 2019

We had a private tour with guide, Camilo, and driver also called Camilo. We were picked up from our hotel on time, and immediately camilo started to tell us interesting information on Colombia, nature etc. Our walk was amazing - we saw a condor and hummingbirds and Camilo was very knowledgeable about nature, history and politics... – Catrin, July 2019

For the third year in a row, we have used the very knowledgeable and friendly professionals at Uncover Colombia to plan our trip to that very beautiful country. exploring around colombia

Guides were excellent and spoke good English which helped as my Spanish is, shall we say, developing! The places for accommodation were also good, but ask if you would prefer smaller hotels as the company are very flexible. We had good communication with the local representative from Uncover Colombia while we were in the country, and very quick, helpful responses while planning from England. – John, April 2018

My husband and I recently visited Colombia for 28 days. The whole trip was organized by Uncover Colombia and they did a great job. This was a customized trip for just the 2 of us. great trip to colombia!

We went on a grand tour of Colombia, visiting all the places my daughter (who lives there) recommended over a couple of weeks...Our trip couldn't have been any better. We were treated like royalty from start to finish - excellent hotels, guides and great places to visit. Thoroughly enjoyed every moment. What a beautiful country! – Mary, January 2018

exceptional colombia travel agent

My wife and I wanted to visit Colombia. We travel independently or with an agent who only deals with one country. From our first contact to a final meeting after our 3 week trip they performed brilliantly...Colombia exceeded our expectations and anyone wishing to go should choose to travel with Uncover Colombia. – Peter, March 2017

A Complete Guide to How to Get From Bogotá to Cartagena

  • Post author: Adam McConnaughhay
  • Post published: November 1, 2023

If you’re currently planning a trip to Colombia, there’s a reasonable chance you might be considering flying into Bogotá. It’s Colombia’s capital and main hub for both international and domestic travel.

It’s not a bad destination in its own right either as the center of Colombian culture and public life.

There are lots of other great destinations in Colombia too. Among the best is Cartagena, the country’s colonial Caribbean gem (this site is dedicated to Cartagena after all!). It’s also a great gateway to other places on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, including some of the best beaches, hiking, and natural areas in the country.

I lived in Cartagena for over a decade and traveled from Bogotá to Cartagena and vice versa many times.

Here, I’ll use that experience to discuss the best ways to get from Bogotá to Cartagena, including why I think flights from Bogotá to Cartagena are the best choice for most travelers.

I’ll also cover how to take a Bogotá to Cartagena bus and even some things to keep in mind if you think you might want to drive from Bogotá to Cartagena.

So read on to learn all you need to know how to get from Bogotá to Cartagena!

A map showing a pin in the dot for Cartagena illustrating how to get to from Bogotá to Cartagena.

How Far is Cartagena from Bogotá?

Why most people should take flights from bogotá to cartagena, tips for taking a bogotá to cartagena bus.

  • Can You Drive from Bogotá to Cartagena?

How to Get from Bogotá to Cartagena Quick Tips

I won’t waste much time on this.

For most travelers, taking a Bogotá to Cartagena flight is by far the best option.

There are plenty of options for Bogotá to Cartagena flights, including fairly cheap ones. More importantly, though, flights from Bogotá to Cartagena take a fraction of the time to travel between the two cities over land, whether by a Bogotá to Cartagena bus or by car.

And, I’m not kidding around by saying a fraction either!

A flight from Bogotá to Cartagena will take an hour and a half.

A bus from Bogotá to Cartagena will take close to 24 hours!

That’s a heck of a difference, and a lot of time you could use to actually enjoy one or both cities or some other destination in Colombia.

Every time we have every traveled from Bogotá to Cartagena, we’ve flown.

In my experience, I just don’t see the trade off in time as being worth it. That’s especially the case if you can find a cheap Bogotá to Cartagena flight. You may not even save much by taking a bus.

Speaking of that, I recommend checking on sites like CheapOair and Expedia to find cheap flights. You may find there isn’t much of a difference in cost between taking a bus to Cartagena from Bogotá.

There is one other scenario besides just a shoestring budget that taking a bus from Bogotá to Cartagena might be worth it.

If you have the time to slow travel and make a few stops along the way, traveling over land through central-eastern Colombia will give you access to some lesser visited destinations that aren’t as easy to reach via air.

You can see some suggestions for those stops in the tips on taking buses from Bogotá to Cartagena section below.

If you do want to do a Bogotá to Cartagena bus, you can get some ideas for prices and schedules and book ahead at BusBud and Bookaway .

If you’re just traveling directly to Cartagena from Bogotá, I’d strongly just suggest flying though. I think you’ll just get a lot more out of having practically an entire day to enjoy yourself.

Speaking of that, please do check out my suggestions for what to do in Cartagena as well as things to do in Bogotá .

You can also check out the best Cartagena tours on GetYourGuide and Viator as well as the top tours in Bogotá on GetYourGuide and Viator .

Finally, if you prefer to let someone else take care of most of your planning, do consider planning a trip with my partner travel agency BnB Colombia Tours. Their agents can create the best possible customized trip for you based on your interests. Most of their tours are private, and they only work with reliable, bilingual guides. Fill out this form to start getting some help planning your trip now. They’ll even give you a discount for contacting them through my site!

They also have a variety of day tours you can book independently in Bogotá and Cartagena. Use the code ExploreColombia10 for a discount on any of those.

Also, whether you’re using an agency or planning on your own, and regardless of how you travel to Cartagena from Bogotá, you’ll need a good place to stay.

Do check out my guide to the best areas to stay in Cartagena . Or, if you’re looking for a specific type of hotel or price point, check out my guides to the best boutique hotels , best luxury hotels , best beachfront hotels , or best hostels in Cartagena.

I also have a guide to the best areas to stay in Bogotá and picks for the best luxury hotels and best hotels near the Bogotá airport that might be worth checking out if you’re traveling from Bogotá to Cartagena.

I’l close these quick tips by saying I don’t recommend driving since the Bogotá to Cartagena distance is so far, including sections on winding mountain roads.

However, if you want to try it, you can check prices for rental cars at RentalCars.com .

If you want some more details and tips on each of these ways for how to get from Bogotá to Cartagena, read on to learn more about them and the pros and cons of each of these ways to get to Cartagena from Bogotá.

Photo of a map of Colombia to illustrate the Bogotá to Cartagena distance.

The Bogotá to Cartagena distance via road is a tad under 1,000 km, or 620 miles.

Now, if you look at the map above, you’ll see it doesn’t seem like Bogotá is all that far away, and that’s probably true, at least as the condor flies.

However, due to the mountainous roots of the Andes you’ll have to descend coming from Bogotá to Cartagena, travel times take much longer than the Bogotá to Cartagena distance might make you think at first glance.

According to Google Maps, driving from Bogotá to Cartagena will take about 19 hours. My experience is Google Maps often underestimates driving time due to traffic and road conditions in much of Colombia.

Buses from Bogotá to Cartagena take 20-24 hours depending on stops, traffic, and road conditions. I’ve heard of them taking even longer too.

Meanwhile, flights from Bogotá to Cartagena only take around 90 minutes.

That massive difference in travel time is why I strongly recommend taking to Bogotá to Cartagena flight , at least for most travelers.

The trade off of giving up basically a whole day makes it more than worth spending a handful of pesos more to just book a flight from Bogotá to Cartagena, at least in my opinion.

To be honest, I’ve never been even remotely tempted to take a bus, and Susana and I have always traveled on flights from Bogotá to Cartagena.

It’s just so much easier, more convenient, and quicker.

It’s also usually pretty easy to find cheap Bogotá to Cartagena flights. For example, while doing this write up, I did a quick search.

I found one way flights from Bogotá to Cartagena for $62 USD.

A bus you can book online runs $33 USD.

So, we only are talking about a $30 to maybe $50, at worst, difference.

While I do recommend checking out sites like Expedia and CheapOair to compare prices, I also recommend checking on individual airlines’ websites.

Avianca and LATAM frequently run flash sales with great deals on flights from Bogotá to Cartagena (I found that $62 flight on Avianca).

These sales do often have peak seasons and holidays blacked out, but you can often find a deal if you check in periodically.

Many times these deals are also best for one way flights, so they work really well if you’re flying from Bogotá to Cartagena and then heading home from there.

Budget carrier Wingo is also worth checking out as they have flights from Bogotá to Cartagena and can be a really good deal, especially if you don’t need to check bags.

If you are going to take a Bogotá to Cartagena flight, be sure to check out my guide to the Cartagena airport , and you also might want to take a look over at the Bogotá airport Wikipedia page .

Finally, you can also book a private transfer to or from the airport in Bogotá and in Cartagena with my partner travel agency (don’t forget the ExploreColombia10 discount code!).

Photo of an airplane parked with Avianca in red letters on the side preparing for a Bogotá to Cartagena flight.

As I mentioned in the introduction, I advise against taking a Bogotá to Cartagena bus, especially if you’re simply traveling between Bogotá and Cartagena.

The difference in price just isn’t worth the long time it takes to take a Bogotá to Cartagena bus compared to a flight.

Now, if you have some extra time to slow travel, taking a bus from Bogotá to Cartagena and making some stops along the way can be a great way to see a bit more of the country, especially the lesser traveled and very pretty Boyacá and Santander regions.

Traditionally, San Gil has been a popular stop for backpackers taking buses from Bogotá to Cartagena.

There are some good hostels here and a mini-backpacker party scene. It’s also a hub for lots of neat adventure sports like paragliding and white water rafting.

You can also visit the stunning Chicamocha Canyon nearby.

I recommend at least one other stop first though.

Villa de Leyva is only a few hours outside Bogotá and is a gorgeous little colonial town. Its central plaza is one of the largest in Latin America. There are some neat prehistoric fossils you can see here plus a few neat outdoor sites nearby too.

You can read more about Villa de Leyva here .

If you enjoy hiking, the Paramó de Ocetá near the tiny but charming town of Monguí is well worth the stop to do the hike and see the fascinating looking frailejones plants.

There are a few other neat little towns around Boyacá worth checking out as well if you have the time to truly slow travel.

The next stop I’d suggest, and I’d actually suggest it over San Gil, is Barichara .

This is often called the prettiest town in Colombia. It also has easy access to Chicamocha and paragliding. Plus, San Gil isn’t far away if you wanted to do a day trip there too.

We loved Barichara when we visited. You can read about why we found it so charming in this write up of our experience in Barichara . Don’t forget to try the locals’ favorite snack of roasted ants!

Bucaramanga makes for another ok stop for digital nomads or those looking for some down time in a city to catch up on laundry or something like that.

There aren’t a ton of touristy things to do, but it’s a nice, smaller city.

From Bucaramanga, you could actually consider flying to Cartagena.

Or you have two choices to continue on a Bogotá to Cartagena bus route.

You can go more directly and consider a stop (or not) in the neat colonial era river port of Mompox .

Or you can head to the small city of Valledupar and use it to access the desert peninsula of La Guajira, possibly even trekking across the desert to the most northern point in South America at Punta Gallinas .

You can also route from Valledupar to Santa Marta, possibly stopping at hip beach town Palomino , pretty mountain town Minca , and/or the unspoiled beaches of Tayrona National Park before finally routing down to Cartagena from Santa Marta.

Of course, you certainly don’t have to do all of that, but being able to make at least one stop along the way is the best reason to take a Bogotá to Cartagena bus.

Also, for what it’s worth, if you’re just interested in doing the stops on the northern Caribbean coast like Tayrona, Minca, and Palomino, it’s easiest just to fly to Cartagena and head up the coast to Santa Marta from there. See this guide on how to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta .

If you do decide to take a bus to Cartagena from Bogotá, be it direct, with one, or with seven stops, you can get an idea of prices and schedules and even book online at BusBud and Bookaway .

Keep in mind, you’ll want to get buses to Cartagena from Bogotá at the main Salitre Terminal in Bogotá, and you will get more options at the terminal itself than what you’ll find online.

Tips for Driving from Bogotá to Cartagena

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend driving from Bogotá to Cartagena.

It’s a super long drive, and it’s easy enough to do buses even if you want to make stops along the way.

The main reason, I’d advise against it though is that Colombians tend to drive very aggressively, including trucks and buses. You’ll also be on some winding mountain roads, which makes that sound even more daunting, at least to me.

So, if you’re not used to that kind of driving, I’d strongly advise against it. If you are good with that, then you could check prices for rental cars at RentalCars.com and consider doing the drive.

Personally, I’d still just plan on the bus if you want to make some stops or just fly if not.

Ready to plan your trip from Bogotá to Cartagena?

Now you know all about how to get from Bogotá to Cartagena.

I really strongly suggest flying for anyone who is going directly to Cartagena from Bogotá or anyone who is only interested in seeing other destinations on the coast.

However, if you are up to make some stops in Boyacá or Santander provinces along the way, busing can still be a good option.

I hope this guide was useful and helped you make the best decision for you and your trip.

More importantly, I hope you have a safe trip and enjoy Bogotá, Cartagena, and anywhere else you go in Colombia!

Bogota vs Cartagena: Which City Is Worth Visiting More?

Bogota or Cartagena? Which city should you visit on your next trip to Colombia ? These two cities are two of the most famous tourist destinations in Colombia, but each has its own unique charms and appeal.

Though these two Colombian cities have many similarities, they are also very different in many aspects. Some travelers might love Cartagena, but absolutely hate Bogota, or vice versa.

That is why we have written this article to compare and contrast Cartagena and Bogota , so that you can make an informed decision about which city is right for your next visit!

In the end, we will sum up our discussion and see which city emerges victorious in the Bogota vs Cartagena fight!

What Is Bogota Like?

Safe-Neighborhoods-Bogota-Colombia

Before we jump into our comparisons, we would like to take a minute to discuss the two cities so you have a general idea of what to expect when visiting.

As you might already know, Bogota is the capital of Colombia. Though it is not the biggest city in Colombia, it is the most populous at around 8 million people. The city is situated on a plateau of the Andes Mountains, and consequently has an altitude of 2,640 m (8,661 ft).

This unique location gives Bogota a very particular climate that is much cooler than most of Colombia. Even during its hottest days, the average highs are only around 20 °C or 68 °F.

Just like most capital cities, Bogota is a bustling metropolis with a lot to offer tourists. The city has a rich history, culture, and plenty of modern comforts.

There are many different neighborhoods to explore in Bogota, each with its own unique flavor. For example, the colonial-style Candelaria district is full of beautiful buildings and cobblestone streets, while the more modern Zona Rosa is perfect for shopping and dining.

What Is Cartagena Like?

IS-Cartagena-Safe-Featured

Unlike Bogota, Cartagena de Indias (or Cartagena for short), sits on the Caribbean Coast and has a tropical climate. This means that the weather is hot and humid all year long with very little variation.

Cartagena is mostly a colonial city with a historic walled old town. It was built in the 16th by the Spaniards as protection from the pirates. Cartagena is the most extensive fortification in all of Latin America, and hence its old town has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Colombia.

The touristy part of the city is full of cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and a lively atmosphere unlike anywhere in Colombia. Combined with the tropical weather, Cartagena is quite a unique place.

The Castillo San Felipe de Barajas fort rises above the historic center and overlooks it. There are also plenty of excellent beaches and beach clubs in Cartagena , making it the perfect place to relax after exploring the city.

Cartagena is also one of the world’s busiest cruise port, so the crowd of tourists are very diverse and everyone is out to have a good time.

The vibe of Cartagena and Bogota are very different, and visitors can expect a very different type of Cartagena in each of those two places.

Bogota Vs Cartagena: How Do They Compare?

Below we are going to compare Bogota and Cartagena in several categories. At the end of the article, we’ll sum up the pros and cons of each city and select a winner!

Which City Has Better Weather?

Cartagena-Beach-Sunny-Weather

Perhaps the biggest difference between Bogota and Cartagena is the weather. As we mentioned, Bogota is situated high in the Andes Mountains, and consequently has cool weather with a sizable amount of precipitation.

Walking in a T-shirt and shorts during the day might be possible, but it’ll most certainly be too cold at night, even during the warmest days in Bogota.

On the contrary, Cartagena has a very tropical climate. The average high temperature stays consistently above 30°C or 86°F and rarely drops below 24°C or 75°F.

Because Cartagena is situated by the sea, the relative humidity stays above 70% daily, which means you’ll sweat like a pig at any time of the day. Cartagena is one of the hottest places I’ve been to in my life.

In the summer months, the average temperature is so hot and intolerable that many locals don’t even go out during the day. Of course, you can go swimming in one of Cartagena’s beaches, but if that is the only thing you can do in the middle of the day, then you won’t be able to be much sightseeing.

Because weather is entirely up to personal preference, it is a draw in this category.

Which City Has Better Nightlife?

Salsa-Dancing-Bogota

Colombia is known for its nightlife, and both Bogota and Cartagena have astonishing nightlife.

Cartagena’s nightlife is mainly concentrated in the old city and the Getsemani neighborhood. Both areas are full of bars, clubs, and restaurants, but most of these venues are targeted toward tourists.

The venues are most likely going to be full of foreigners instead of locals, which isn’t exactly what you might be looking for if you are looking for an experience partying with the locals.

Bogota’s nightlife is spread out across many different neighborhoods. The most popular party areas are Chapinero and Zona Rosa, and Usaquen. All three of these areas have a large number of bars, clubs, and restaurants to keep you entertained well into the early hours of the morning.

Because Bogota is so much bigger than Cartagena, there are a lot more options when it comes to nightlife. Whether you want a laid-back bar with live music or a lively salsa bar, you can find it in Bogota.

For that reason, Bogota has better nightlife than Cartagena and wins this category.

Best City For Nightlife: Bogota

Which City Is Safer?

Cartagena-1

One of the biggest factors when deciding whether Bogota or Cartagena is worth visiting more is its safety. As you might already know, Colombia (or any country in South America) does not have the best reputation when it comes to safety.

For the locals in Colombia, Cartagena is known as one of the more dangerous cities in Colombia. But the areas where tourists will be staying are typically quite safe. Neighborhoods such as the Walled City, Getsemani, and Bocagrande have a big police presence, so most tourists feel quite  safe in Cartagena .

However, Cartagena is a city that heavily relies on tourists for its income. This means that although the city might feel welcoming on the surface, the locals are trying to get as much money from you as possible. Scams are very common in Cartagena, and petty thefts such as pickpockets in nightclubs and bars are not unusual.

Safety in Bogota is also not the best. As the capital, it is often the epicenter of all civil unrest and protest. Crime in Bogota is also not uncommon, but perhaps what is unnerving is that the historic center of Bogota (La Candelaria) is dangerous, especially at night.

Bogota has plenty of areas that are safe, but also plenty that are dangerous. And it is not unusual for tourists to just accidentally end up in a dangerous neighborhood.

While the safety of both Bogota and Cartagena are not too different from one another, Cartagena is slightly safer than Bogota for tourists since they are less likely to unknowingly end up in a sketchy area.

Best City For Safety: Cartagena

Which City Has Better Tourist Attractions?

Zipaquira-Salt-Cathedral-4

Cartagena and Bogota are two of the biggest tourist destinations in Colombia, but they both offer something very different. Perhaps the biggest difference is due to geography. Because Cartagena is situated near the Sea, many of the activities are water-related.

When you are not swimming in the sea or snorkeling in the Rosario Islands, the walled city of Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with lots of history and culture. Visitors can stroll along the cobblestone streets and admire all the colonial buildings. You are likely going to run into the Palenqueras, women from the descendants of the first free African slave.

Climb up the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas Fortress, one of the landmarks of Colombia , and learn about the history of the most extensive fortifications in South America. Cartagena has a mixture of cultural and natural attractions that travelers will love.

The capital city of Bogota certainly does not pale in comparison when it comes to tourist attractions. The city has some of the best museums in Colombia, such as the Botero Museum and Museo del Oro, home to the biggest collection of pre-Columbian gold.

Visitors that would like to enjoy the outdoors can explore Monserrate, a mountain that offers epic panoramic views of Bogota. There are also multiple waterfalls near Bogota, as well as the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral, which is considered the First Wonder of Colombia.

Both Cartagena’s and Bogota’s tourist attractions are incredible, but generally Bogota has a lot more to offer tourists. Travelers might find themselves bored in Cartagena after a few days, but you would only scratch the surface with a few days in Bogota.

City With The Better Attractions: Bogota

Which City Has Better Food And Drinks?

Ajiaco-Bogota-Colombian-Dish

Colombian food is known for being some of the best in South America, and both Cartagena and Bogota can offer tourists a taste of what it’s like. However, the type of dishes served in these two cities is hugely dependent on the kind of ingredients available to them.

Since Cartagena is situated by the sea, it is mainly known for its seafood and fresh fruits. Visitors can find anything from ceviche to fried fish and calamari. Because of its history, the food is influenced by a mix of cultures – the Spanish, Africans, and the native indigenous people.

The result is a unique flavor that can only be found in Cartagena.

When it comes to food and drinks, Bogota is far from lacking. This Colombian city is home to tons of incredible eateries, from Michelin-star restaurants to small hole-in-walls. In fact, the city is home to one of the top 50 restaurants in the world – Leo.

The food in Bogota is slightly different than that of Cartagena. Because of the cold temperatures, there are a lot more stews and hearty foods in Bogota, and one you must try is the ajiaco. Don’t miss out on other popular dishes such as empanadas, arepas, and Bandeja Paisa.

In Bogota, you can also sample some of the best coffee Colombia is known for, and you’ll find it more enjoyable here because of the chilly weather.

While both cities have incredible food and drinks, Bogota has a wider selection of food and is more culturally Colombian. For that reason, we are picking Bogota over Cartagena when it comes to food. But if you are a seafood lover, then you might prefer Cartagena more!

Best City For Food And Drinks: Bogota

Which City Is Prettier?

Cartagena

The layout and architecture of both cities are incredibly different.

As we mentioned, Cartagena features a walled city with colorful colonial architecture. Visitors will find that the streets are lined with flowers and that most buildings are painted in very bright colors.

It’s certainly a feast for the eyes, and it’s easy to spend hours just wandering around and taking it all in. Along with the beautiful beaches, you’ll find yourself completely in awe of the beauty of Cartagena.

Bogota, on the other hand, is very much a metropolitan city. You’ll find towering skyscrapers, busy streets, and a whole lot of people. While it doesn’t have the same charm as Cartagena, Bogota makes up for it with its own unique beauty.

The city is home to some incredible street art, and a walk through any of the neighborhoods will show you just how creative the locals are. There are also plenty of green spaces in Bogota, which families with kids might prefer.

In terms of which city is prettier, it really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want charming colonial architecture and beautiful beaches, then Cartagena is the place for you. But if you prefer a more modern aesthetic with incredible skyscrapers and big parks, then you might enjoy Bogota.

But generally speaking, the majority of people will find Cartagena more beautiful than Bogota. If you come from a big city, you might even think Bogota is quite ugly!

Which Is The Prettier City? Cartagena

Which City Has More History And Culture?

Cartagena-San-Felipe-Castle

This is a tough one, because both Cartagena and Bogota are incredibly rich in history and culture.

Cartagena was founded way back in 1533, and it has since been through a lot of changes. Throughout its long and varied history, Cartagena has been home to many different cultures. This is reflected in the food, architecture, and even the way people speak. It is no surprise that the Walled City is a UNESCO Site.

Read More: Medellin vs Cartagena: Which City Is Better?

The city was one of the richest in the Americas, and the Spaniards built the Walled City to protect its riches from pirate attacks. The city is not only home to plenty of museums where you can learn about its history, but every street in the Walled City is a piece of its past. The culture of Cartagena is spilling out in every corner.

Bogota, on the other hand, is the capital of Colombia. Inherently, it is home to tons of history and culture, and visitors can see that in the La Candelaria historic district. The city has undergone numerous changes in the past to become what you see today, and visitors can learn about it through the numerous museums around the city.

While Bogota might have more culture and history, it is generally harder to experience it. Yes, you can hit up all the museums and go on a guided tour, but it is unlike Cartagena where you are literally walking through a piece of history frozen in time.

For that reason, Cartagena is better than Bogota for culture and history.

City With More History And Culture: Cartagena

Which Is Better For Living?

Bogota-2

This is perhaps the easiest category to decide because Bogota is the clear winner. Cartagena is a tourist city with very few liveable areas. The infrastructure is not the best and there isn’t a lot to offer for long-term visitors. As we have mentioned, Cartagena is one of those places that you only visit for a few days.

However, Bogota is a big city with plenty of things to do. From the standard of living to cost of living, Bogota is significantly better than Cartagena. It is easier to get around in Bogota with the amazing TransMilenio public transport system, which is something Cartagena lacks.

In general, Bogota has a lot more modern amenities than Cartagena.

The Better City For Living: Bogota

Cartagena vs Bogota Comparison Table

To sum everything up and help you make an easier decision, here is a comparison table with all the categories we discussed above.

Cartagena or Bogota FAQs

Is bogota cheaper than cartagena.

Generally speaking, Bogota is cheaper than Cartagena because most tourists visit Cartagena. This means that the prices are higher in Cartagena because they target tourists. In Bogota, you can generally find more affordable accommodation, food and everything in between.

Is Bogota Safer Than Cartagena?

Both Bogota and Cartagena have questionable areas where your safety is not guaranteed. But typically speaking, tourists are more likely going to stumble on one of those neighborhoods in Bogota than in Cartagena. Because of that, Cartagena is slightly more safe than Bogota.

Which is Better? Medellin Vs Cartagena – Final Verdict

As you can tell, comparing these two beautiful cities in Colombia is no easy task. In the end, Bogota slightly edges out Cartagena and becomes the better city to visit. But where you end up visiting will largely depend on what your interests are.

The main difference is that Cartagena is a party town with the vibes of a Caribbean Island, and Bogota is an all-rounded city with plenty to do but a cold climate.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, bogota – arrive in the bustling capital of colombia.

Bogota dances to the traditional rhythm of salsa music that fills the hearts and souls of Bogotanos , represented in the bright artwork that drapes over the walls of the city, on the dance floors in the vibrant clubs, and in the cafes in which the delicate aromas of tropical fruits blend with traditional flavors made anew. Your flight will land at El Dorado Airport where you will meet your private transfer at baggage claim. Your first views of the city will come in the form of the rustic-red hues of the sunlight that bounces off of the rooftops and bricks built around the residential buildings that hug the slopes of the Andean hillsides.

The green forest carpets the summit of Cerro de Monserrate as it rises out of the city’s northeast topped with an opulent church and panoramic views of the city. You can see the funicular traversing the slopes to reach the peak before returning to the hill’s base. Colonial homes border the cobblestone streets in the historical district known as La Candelaria, which was established in the 16th century. The church of San Francisco was erected in the 1560s and decorated with a large wooden altar surrounded by gold leaf-covered columns.

It is the oldest church in the city, having survived earthquakes and tumultuous governments. You will take in the riots of color draping the colonial structures of the historical neighborhood, along with adorning walls and buildings around the city. The murals share the stories of Colombia’s past and contemporary living conditions, acting as satire, political rebellion, or even cultural celebration for artists and communities across Bogota, as seen through the unique portrayal of the country’s birdlife on a wall overlooking the brick walkway of La Candelaria.

What's Included:

Bogota – Enjoy a Historical City Tour to View the City’s Museums and Culture

Wake up in the embrace of your opulent hotel filled with the elegance of colonial features with contemporary style. At breakfast, you can sit on the open terrace to enjoy the view of the city’s rooftops, enhanced by the aroma of fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee brewed with quality beans cultivated in Colombia. The vibrant colors of the fruit will strike you immediately, promoting the exotic treats that grow locally around Bogota and Colombia, from passion fruit to plantains. Your guide will meet you in your hotel lobby eager to take you on an engaging tour of the cityscape by blending the history of Bogota with the city’s contemporary culture.

Locals venture to Andre’s Carne de Res to enjoy the interesting décor of dangling road signs, storefront images, and metalwork bringing a colorful atmosphere to the enticing aroma of perfectly cooked steaks. Street vendors sell sodas, water, and fresh strawberries in the sunlight that spreads across the antique cobblestones. After visiting the oldest square in the city at Plaza Bolivar, and taking in the distinctive charms of the Botero Museum, you will venture to the Gold Museum, which features more than 35,000 pieces of pre-Columbian artwork, boasting one of the grandest collections of pre-Hispanic golden artifacts in the world.

The gallery is located inside the Banco de la Republica, a vast complex that is home to a variety of museums. The exhibits craft a story of the indigenous population before the Spanish arrived, with four main galleries. You will marvel at the Cosmology and Symbolism exhibit, which immerses you in an exploration of mythical symbols surrounding the precious metals. Four independent stands rise in front of a gray wall, and each stand holds a relevant artifact connoting a deity produce between 500 and 2,000 years ago. The value of each figure emanates less from the material used and more from the importance placed on the artifacts by the indigenous peoples.

Villa de Leyva – Discover the Tiers and Layers of the Salt Cathedral

In the morning, you can look out over the city and watch the sunlight shape the rusty-red hues of the brick-top structures spread around the cityscape. Homes straddle the promontories and hillsides beneath the lush canopy that sweeps over the mountains. After your meal, your private transfer will meet you in the hotel lobby and lead you out of Bogota to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira. Located in the mountains more than 1,500 feet southwest of town, the underground network of cathedrals and tunnels opened in the 1950s, traveling 660 feet underground. The walls are cool and smooth to the touch as you run your fingers along the tunnels.

Three sections represent the life cycle of Jesus, from birth to death, with icons and ornaments detailing the architecture. You cannot help but marvel at the delicate details hand carved into the halite rock, embellished with marble sculptures. A stone recreation of Michelangelo’s Creation of Man glows in blue light against the backdrop of a large cross hanging on the wall. The backlit stone figures, from images of angels to massive crosses, cast an ethereal glow across the dim caverns with purple, orange, and tan hues scattered across the cathedral galleries. When you exit the cavern, the sunlight brings the bright hues of the historical township back into view. Your driver will meet you at the entrance and lead you to the charming town of Villa de Leyva.

Medellin – Tour the Charm of Villa de Leyva before Transferring to Medellin

In the morning, you will wake up in the colonial comforts of your luxurious room accented with both original, and refurbished colonial architecture. An archway separates the bedroom from a sitting room, with rose windows filled-in with colorful glass. Your guide will meet you after breakfast eager to show you the wealth of history preserved in the town a short distance from Bogota’s bustling streets. The town was established in the 1570s and has maintained its colonial architecture. Carriages roll down the street, and children fly kites in the heart of the enormous Plaza Mayor, which stands at nearly 400 feet by 400 feet. The humble parish church adds to the magnitude of the square and its beauty.

The peaceful and bucolic streets lead to narrow alleys before touching back onto the main boulevards that lead to the encircling plains. Museo del Carmen hosts a variety of religious art crafted throughout Colombia’s history, from the 16th century onward. The former convent has a gorgeous courtyard with a central fountain bubbling with water.  An old factory once helped supply colonial troops with alcohol and today features rotating exhibits by renowned Colombian artists. Your private transfer will meet you at the end of your tour and escort you to El Dorado Airport in Bogota for your quick flight to Medellin.

Medellin – Explore Medellin’s Vibrant History and Surrounding Landscape

In the morning, the beauty of Medellin will shine through the decorative murals of the city, shedding light on the past and emphasizing the cultural shift in the city’s present. Your hotel provides a warm boutique environment focused on luxury and comfort, with views to the forested hillsides contrasting with the urban streets. The city has reinvented itself, with locals feeling as though they have separated from the country as a whole. In Bogota, the people danced to the rhythms of salsa as the base of their historical and contemporary songs. In Medellin, locals move to the beat of reggaeton and techno, shying away from Colombian tradition.

Mountain peaks surround the city with the cable cars of the metro crisscrossing the skyline. The climate hovers around a perfect 75 degrees Fahrenheit year-round and the sunlight glints off the black boulders on the hillside, which contain the three branches of the public library. Botero Square stands in the heart of the Medellin, encompassing nearly 35,200 square feet of downtown beneath the towers of St. Anthony’s Church. An open-air gallery allows passersby to enjoy the art of Fernando Botero with upwards of 23 bronzes decorating the walkways, from pieces of historical nature, such as Roman Soldier , to anatomy, in the form of The Hand . Locals and the city government believe the statues bring good fortune and have in turn inspired art into an important form of expression throughout the city.

Cartagena – Fly to Cartagena for a Walking Tour of the Antique City Center

On the outskirts of the city, the crystal-clear waters of the Claro River wind along the marble rock-bed to shape the valley east of Antioquia. Citron-throated Toucans linger in the trees and feed on the natural fruits and nuts that grow within the canopy. Their sharply hooked beak shines with variations of bright yellows and greens against the blue plumage that surrounds their eyes. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you in your hotel lobby and escort you to Jose Maria Cordova International Airport for your flight to Cartagena.

Your plane will descend along the coastline, and out the window, you can see the sapphire waters of the Caribbean Sea lapping against the sandy shores near the old walls of the San Felipe de Barajas Castle. You will meet your private transfer at baggage claim and set out on an introductory tour of Old Town, bordered by the tan walls of strong stone erected in the 16th century. The city is rich with culture and history, with colonial homes telling tales of pirates and hidden gold.

Horse drawn carriages travel down the cobblestone streets as balconies and doorways have brightly painted frames. The walls of the city lead to antique churches and colonial mansions. Your guide will introduce you to Inquisition Palace where trees shade the walkways, palms flutter in the breeze, and fountains cool the tropical air. The 18th-century Baroque structure features wooden balconies draped with blossoming bougainvillea. The courtyard filled with palms accentuates the yellow plaster work and bright tiles.

Cartagena – Relish a Day at Leisure to Explore or Relax as you Prefer

In the morning, the sweet aroma of passion fruit blends with the sweeping sea breeze. You can sip your coffee and enjoy a traditional breakfast of black beans, eggs, and fried plantains. Outside of your hotel, the bougainvillea frame the pastel hues of the colonial homes that line the streets and lead to the whitewashed dome of the Cathedral. After breakfast, the day is yours to enjoy the beauty of the city and its surrounding pleasures. Dip your toes into the hot golden sand around Bocagrande or venture to Islas del Rosario, an archipelago less than 20 miles off the coast containing 27 islands. The boat ride takes you along the crystalline waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Water splashes up from the hull and sprays mist on your cheeks. The sea maintains an average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the stretch of white, powdery sand known as Playa Blanca glows in the sunlight. The edge of the beach offers a perfect spot on which you can lay down your towel and relax in the bright lights of the midmorning sun. The water is clear enough for you to view the seafloor as the sand brushes against your skin. The fine grains of the white sand sticks to your shoulders, along with remnants of the salt from the water. You can set out to a local coral reef to relish the tranquil water and vibrant underworld activity, from billowing sea anemones to brain coral rising out of the sand like a sudden hill.

Cartagena – Depart for Home

The morning rises as women draped in bright clothing walk along the cobblestone streets carrying large bowls stacked on their head. The yellow clock tower stands to watch above the 16th-century walls, marking the entrance and exit to the antique city streets. Kids rush to a jetty near the edges of the fortress walls, diving off the wooded promontory into the water. Fishers take their nets to labyrinthine lanes of Mercado Bazurto. At breakfast, you will enjoy the comforting flavor of a freshly brewed coffee made with Colombian beans. Your private transfer will meet you at your hotel when you are ready and escort you to Rafael Nunez International Airport for your flight home.

Detailed Description

Glamour and history, charm and delight create a vague outline of Colombia’s splendor. Cable cars crisscross Medellin’s skyline as exotic fruits fill the open-air markets across the country. Sapphire water brushes against the sandy shores of the east coast and emerald canopies carpet the Andes Mountains. Experience the music, discover the flavor and see the riotous colors during your 8-day tour and relish your immersion into a country that can only be defined by its unique charms. Your journey will begin with your arrival in Bogota, the capital of Colombia. Meet your private transfer at baggage claim before reaching your hotel located on the colonial streets of the city’s oldest neighborhood.

The next day, your guide will take you on a private tour of Bogota’s bustling streets. Visit the main square of Plaza Bolivar before discovering the beauty of the Botero Museum and the wonderment of the Gold Museum. Venture to the top of Monserrate by way of the funicular for the spectacular views of the city below. The following day, you will leave the city behind and reach the marvelous subterranean halls of the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira. Wander through the cavernous space to view the harmonious architecture before continuing Villa de Leyva for the evening.

After a sumptuous breakfast the next morning, your guide will lead you on a walking tour of the preserved colonial town decorated with terracotta tiles and cobblestone streets. Return to Bogota for your short flight to Medellin, where your private transfer will escort you from the airport to your luxurious hotel overlooking the bordering forest. The next day, you will have a private guided tour to discover Medellin’s past and present beauty. Stroll through Botero Sculpture Park and ride the cable car metro high above the city before visiting the botanical gardens. Travel next to Cartagena, meeting your private transfer at Rafael Nunez International Airport.

Your guide will lead you through an introductory tour of the labyrinthine streets of Old Town, taking you to Plaza de los Coches, Plaza Pedro Claver, and inside the Inquisition Palace. The next day is at your leisure to indulge in the remarkable sites and embrace the culture of Cartagena. Spend time in the cafes or wander the vibrant streets of the more contemporary neighborhood of Bocagrande. Beyond Colombia Free Tours | Testimonials

I think this Free Tour Medellin was the best walking tour I ever did. We were only three people in our group and our guide was able to dig really deep into the stuff we were interested in. With some personal stories and experiences we were able to understand at least a little how the situation was and how it came to it. He told us how proud they are about the development the country is making but never forgot to also state the dark sides that still exist. Really really amazing!

Stuttgart, Germany

This was an informative, fun, and multi-fascited tour of the Old City section of Getsemani. From history, to art, to the current struggle to maintain its unique culture, the guide is very knowledgeable and interactive. Our guide was Braulio Monsalve. He easily shared in Spanish and English while keeping the group engaged. Learning a cultural dance at the end of the tour was fantastic!
