Where is Kos Town?

Kos Town is the main port of Kos island on the easternmost side. You can get there by plane or by ferry. If you opt to go by plane, you can all year round from Athens and several domestic airports. You can also fly into Kos directly from abroad during the summer season! The flight lasts roughly an hour from Athens. Get a taxi or a bus to take you from the airport to Kos Town, which is 24 km away.

tourist map of kos town

If you opt to go by ferry, you will arrive at Kos Town’s port! The ferry trip from Athens (specifically Piraeus) lasts up to 11 hours, so make sure to book a cabin. You can also get a ferry to Kos from nearby islands, with Patmos being the closest (the trip lasts roughly 3 hours). Note that you can get to Kos by ferry from Bodrum, Turkey.

Where to stay in Kos Town

Alexandra Hotel & Apartments is only 200 meters walking distance from the harbor. It provides stunning island views and a buffet breakfast with local delicacies. You can also have a cocktail at the bar feeling the sea breeze. Kos Aktis Art Hotel is 400 meters walking distance from the city center. The balconies are designed for viewing the Aegean Sea and serve a Greek breakfast with lots of different flavors for you to try.

What to see and do in Kos Town

tourist map of kos town

Kos Town has always been an important city throughout history. Kos Town has featured prominently in the area’s history from the Mycenean Era to modern times. That is etched everywhere in the city, with characteristic landmarks that span the ages.

You will see ruins from antiquity, including the Hellenistic and Roman periods, from the middle ages, and modern times from the Genoese and Ottoman times, blending seamlessly into the unique character permeating Kos Town. There are a lot of things to see and do, but here are the musts:

Start from Eleftheria’s Square (Freedom Square), the Archeological Museum, and Defterdar Mosque

tourist map of kos town

Kos Town’s gorgeous main square is an excellent place to start. Not only can you get your morning coffee real quick, get food to go, and quickly get to any bank you need, but you will find yourself at the perfect crossroads for your explorations. Eleftherias Square is the hub of Kos Town’s local action and the most touristy place.

tourist map of kos town

It also has the Kos Town trademark of fusion of cultures and history: the Archeological Museum of Kos is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building of the 1930s, a memento from the time Kos was under Italian occupation. Within it, priceless artifacts from Kos Town’s entire antiquity are on display for you to enjoy.

tourist map of kos town

On the other side of the square, the Defterdar Mosque, built in the 18 th century during Kos’ Ottoman occupation period by the finance minister of the Ottoman Empire (that’s what the title “defterdar” means), is going to be your first encounter with Islamic architecture and art in Kos.

Beautiful archways and domes and an imposing minaret (despite the damage it sustained from an earthquake in 2017) make for a great start to your walk.

Visit Neratzia Castle

tourist map of kos town

Neratzia Castle is the imposing complex you get to see when you first arrive in Kos Town. It was built in the 14th century by Crusaders as a fortification of the port and the city in general.

tourist map of kos town

The massive archways and walls are one of Kos Town’s impressive landmarks, and the arched stone bridge that connects them to the town proper is a gorgeous place to walk or bike under.

Walk along Kos’ Palm Tree Port

tourist map of kos town

Kos is renowned for its gorgeous port and promenades lined with towering palm trees. It is a hub of tourist action, with day trips and other tourist activities available to be booked at any time, many cafés and bars for refreshment, and a cluster of bric-a-brac shops in the street right behind it. Ensure you enjoy it early in the morning or late in the evening to protect yourself from the sun. And expect a lot of tourists crowding around, too!

Sit in the shade of the Plane Tree of Hippocrates.

tourist map of kos town

Right where the port meets the walls of Neratzia Castle, you will find the huge plane tree that is said to have been the very one Hippocrates, the father of medicine, sat under while teaching his students. The legend isn’t quite true since the tree is estimated to be around 500 years old. Despite that, the atmosphere is there, and you can admire its splendor from a nice café right by it.

While you’re there if you’re feeling up to window shopping touristy items and things to take home with you, stroll down the picturesque and shaded Nafklirou street right by.

Explore the Old Town

tourist map of kos town

The few paved streets- for pedestrians only- that comprise Kos’ Old Town are a delightful mix of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture blended with more modern buildings. The lush bougainvilleas offer splashes of color, and the shops have stylish displays that add to the elegant air.

Explore the Ancient Agora

tourist map of kos town

The Ancient Agora of Kos Town is an extensive open-air museum. Many ruins are carefully excavated from many eras of the town’s antiquity. You will be walking along massive walls, intricate archways, impressive columns from a colonnade complex, remains of temples and shrines such as the one to Aphrodite and Hercules, and even an old Christian Basilica from the 5 th century.

Don’t forget to look for the mosaic floors of specific rooms and areas in the Agora or the statue of Hippocrates.

tourist map of kos town

The cherry on top is that the ruins of the Ancient Agora are decorated: several palm trees, flourishing bougainvilleas, and many other plants grow harmoniously among the ruins, adding splashes of color and some isles of shade.

If you opt to visit the Agora in the evening, you can then go for a drink on the nearby street known among the locals as the street of bars.

Explore the Roman Odeon

tourist map of kos town

Behind the town’s central bus station, you will find several archaeological sites, one of which is the Roman Odeon. It was built in the 2nd century BC and features well-preserved marble and granite seats from where you can gaze at the lush, dark green, tall fir trees and other vibrant vegetation. The first nine rows are marble and were reserved for the time’s VIPs. The rest are granite, intended for the regular folk.

The Odeon is part of a complex, which means you can easily explore it and then wander off to find the next site.

Visit the Casa Romana

tourist map of kos town

The Casa Romana literally means “Roman House” and is a gorgeous and very important archaeological site. It is a house built in the 3 rd century AD in the Hellenistic and Roman styles that blended so well in Kos Town at that era.

Take your time to enjoy its beautiful architecture. The house has 36 rooms and three atriums to maximize lighting. There is a fountain in the middle of each atrium and floors decorated with depictions of the sea or mythology. There are also several frescoes, wall paintings, and mosaics to admire, though the originals are displayed in the Archaeological Museum.

See the Altar of Dionysus

tourist map of kos town

There isn’t just an altar of Dionysus, but rather the ruins of a whole temple dedicated to the god of wine, vegetation, and exhilaration (or madness).

The temple was built in the 2 nd century BC and is very close to the Casa Romana (but predates it). The altar is made of white and grey marble and is in excellent condition, even though the rest of the temple is in ruins.

Walk in the Ancient Gymnasium

tourist map of kos town

The Ancient Gymnasium, also known as “Xisto,” was a massive structure in its heyday. It had 81 columns and a huge white roof.

Of that, only 17 columns are still standing today. Walk along the area and imagine it at its peak, when athletes would compete here covered in oils. They would scrape these oils off after the competition, and that’s why the Gymnasium is also called “Xisto” (which means “scraped”).

Enjoy the unique architecture of the Southern Promenade

tourist map of kos town

The port’s southern promenade is quite scenic in that it features some unique architectural elements from the time of the island’s occupation by the Italians, from 1912 to 1943.

tourist map of kos town

The most prominent of these buildings is the imposing Government House, with its whitewashed walls and unusual, castle-like layout and window decorations. There is also the iconic Albergo Gelsomino Hotel. Along the promenade, there are many other hotels as well, as well as some cafés. You will also find the hug of Kos Town’s medical center.

You will come to the end of the promenade when you reach the marina with its assorted yachts.

Get on a bike

tourist map of kos town

Kos Town is considered one of the most bikeable towns in the country. It would be a miss not to try enjoying the sides in it and nearby (like the Asklepion) while riding a bike.

Take advantage of the 13 km bicycle lane that passes right along the waterfront and through the town’s most scenic routes, or wander in the town’s various paved streets and pathways to make your own adventure.

There are many bike rentals that offer a wide variety of bikes, including tandem bikes, and will match you to an ideal one for you, depending on your skill, age, and tastes. You can also book a biking tour, which usually comes with a skilled tour guide and a selection of routes that will satisfy your tastes, from mountain bike routes to the volcano to laid-back routes around the town and nearby areas.

Check out the Asklipieio of Kos

Asklipieio of Kos

The Asklipieio is an ancient medical center 4 kilometers from Kos Town. It was built in the 3rd century BC to honor the God of Health and Medicine. You can see the rooms that were part of this building, even though the earthquakes have changed the structure.

The first part of the building was a medical school with the shape of a Π (Greek letter for P). On the east side, there are Roman baths, and in the second part of the building is the oldest structure, the ruins of an altar dating from the 4th century BC.

Asklipieio of Kos Town

The third part is the remains of the Doric Temple of Asklipieio, dating back to the 2nd century BC. The location where the Asklipieio is is at the top of a hill, and you can see the town of Kos and its suburbs.

Check out: A Guide to the Asklepion of Kos .

Kos is known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. It is the third largest of the Dodecanese islands with a rich archaeological interest and natural beauty. Kos is highly preferred by the young crowds given the vivid nightlife in the capital. At first sight, the island gives the impression of a large city dominated by numerous hotel complexes and high buildings.

However, a walk at the center reveals all the treasures of Kos starting from the medieval castle, the plane tree of Hippocrates and other ancient remains. Equally interesting villages are found in the beautiful surrounds of Kos like the mountainous village of Zia located in the center of the island. Some great facilities are found in Kardamena, one of the most popular resorts in Kos.

This section proposes a map of Kos with all the major locations of the island.

This Gorgeous Greek Island Has Ancient Ruins, Beautiful Sandy Beaches, and a Charming Old Town

Here's what you need to know to plan a trip to the Greek island of Kos.

tourist map of kos town

Nellmac/Getty Images

There are some 227 inhabited Greek islands to explore, stretching across the Mediterranean Sea for more than 4,600 miles. That means there are a lot of destinations to consider , but if you need a little help narrowing your search of Greek islands to visit right now, we suggest taking a closer look at Kos.

Kos, located at the very edge of the Dodecanese Islands, is well known for its sprawling sandy beaches and historical sites, and it has plenty of white-washed buildings with bright blue trim to delight every tourist in Greece. It’s an island that should be high on the must-see list of those traveling with family or friends and for solo travelers looking to dive deep into Greece’s past. Here’s what you need to know about planning a trip to Kos, Greece.

What to Know Before You Go to Kos

Kos has long been a favored destination for travelers looking for a Greek island getaway. That's largely thanks to its position as one of the southernmost Greek islands, affording it warmer temperatures throughout most of the year. It's filled with historic sites and was the birthplace of Hippocrates, making it a popular destination for medical conventions.

The Best Time to Visit Kos

Like most Greek islands, Kos is at its best in summer. That’s when temperatures reach their peak, the azure waters are warm, and the beach parties go all night long. In Kos, visitors can expect average temperatures of 83 degrees from mid-June to mid-September, according to WeatherSpark . However, the island is still a delight in the shoulder seasons too. In April and May, temperatures typically reach the low 70s, while late September through October stays in the low 80s to mid-70s. Even in the winter, average temperatures hover in the low 60s, so no matter when travelers decide to visit, it’s always a comfortable stay—especially with the right items .

Things to Do on Kos

Visit the asklepieion..

The ruins of the Asklepieion date back thousands of years to the fourth century B.C.E. According to the Kos tourism website , it is considered to be the "most significant archeological monument" on the island. The site where Hippocrates founded his school and taught medicine is open to the public every day except Tuesdays, and entry ranges from 4 to 8 euros, depending on the season.

See the Tree of Hippocrates.

Want to stand in Hippocrates' shadow (again)? Head to the Plane Tree of Hippocrates located at the Castle of Neratzia. According to Discovering Kos , Hippocrates regularly taught classes in this spot under the shade of a massive tree. The tree that stands here today is allegedly 500 years old, making it one of the oldest in Europe.

Test the thermal springs at Agios Fokas Beach.

If the hot sun isn't enough for you, you can always go for a soak in the thermal springs at Agios Fokas Beach. The springs' temperatures typically hover between 107 to 122 degrees, according to Greeka , but don't worry too much about getting burned, as the spring water mixes with the seawater, creating a delightfully warm experience.

Explore Kos Old Town.

Take a little time away from the historical sites and the beaches to visit Kos Old Town. It's a place where you'll find plenty to eat and drink at countless cafes and places to pick up a trinket or two to remember your travels. The best part? There are no cars allowed in the Old Town, making it a stellar place for a stroll.

Blue Lagoon Village

Travelers looking for an all-inclusive getaway should check into Blue Lagoon Village . The hotel has more than 400 rooms to choose from, including family suites with ocean views. The hotel sits directly on a gorgeous stretch of private sand but also comes with several glittering pools to dive into when you’re not feeling an ocean swim.

Albergo Gelsomino Hotel

The Albergo Gelsomino Hotel is one of the oldest accommodations in Kos. The hotel, built in 1928, comes with just eight rooms. Each suite has crisp white bedding, a writing desk, and blackout curtains for deep, restful sleep. Pull back those curtains first thing in the morning to take in the ocean views outside.

Lango Design Hotel & Spa

For an adults-only stay, book a room at the Lango Design Hotel & Spa . The five-star accommodation sits just feet from the beach, and anyone looking for the ultimate sanctuary can book the superior suite, which comes with a private pool. For further relaxation, guests can make their way to the hotel’s full-service spa with treatments by Germaine de Capuccini.

How to Get There

There are several ways to get to Kos. The quickest is booking a flight from Athens , which takes just under an hour; Sky Express, Aegean Air, and Olympic all offer flight options. Those looking to take a slow but scenic route can also hop on a ferry from Athens, but be warned: the journey takes about 11 hours.

Kos Island Greece

Kos town is the capital of Kos Island, also known as the garden of the Aegean . Inviting, colourful and full of flavours and aromas, Kos town is as diverse as the island itself. The multicultural character of the island is primarily evident through the significant archeological sites from different historical periods; ancient temples dedicated to Greek Gods, Mediaeval castles, Ottoman mosques and former public Italian buildings, have shaped an extraordinary blend of cultures and civilisations revealing right before your eyes as you walk through the city.

One of the most important locations on the island is the historic Phoinikon Street or Palm Tree Avenue , which is located just below the Mediaeval Castle of the Knights (or Castle of Neratzia). Over the arched stone bridge which stands unshaken through the centuries, visitors can find one of Kos’ most popular sights, the Plane Tree of Hippocrates . The tree is associated with Hippocrates , proving the island's strong connection to the founding father of modern medicine. The entrance of the Knight’s Castle and the impressive Loggia Mosque , built in 1786, are also found in this square.

Kos town

Eleftherias square is a point of reference for locals and visitors alike, situated right above the port of Kos, among the Archeological Museum of Kos , the public library and the municipal market. The square acquired its current structure and arrangement after the great earthquake of 1933, as did many of the surrounding buildings. Visitors are able to admire the historical and cultural significance of Kos simply by standing in the middle of the square; monuments of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Mediaeval, Ottoman and Italian Occupation eras.

Around Eleftherias square, visitors may wander around the historical centre of Kos, stroll through the scenic narrow alleys of Old Town , pay a visit to the Ancient Agora and the Western Archeological Zone or simply pause in one of the islands popping out cafes and restaurants to soak up some sun rays and feel the flow of time. Independent boutique stores, Greek designer shops and globally-renowned brands can be found all over the shopping area of Kos, which is extended around Konitsis square, Ippokratous, Venizelou and Vasileos Pavlou streets. The port of Kos, used by both tourist vessels as well as ferries making routes towards the mainland and other nearby islands, is located in the heart of Kos town too.

One of the busiest areas and very popular thanks to its position - close to the city center, that is. Found on the northwest side of Kos town, basically its continuity, about 4 kilometres away, Lambi offers easy-to-access sandy beaches and lush greenery. The wider area is also known as Nea Alikarnassos. Along its flat road, visitors will stumble upon numerous beach bars, cafes, restaurants, rental offices, travel agencies, water sports, and other useful facilities. Cycling is ideal for those who wish to get to Lambi, following the coastal road of Kos, using the convenient bike lanes. Further away, following the broad road of Faros (also found written as Aigaiou Str.), visitors are able to reach Tigaki through a backroad, in about 7 kilometres.

Quieter during winter and clearly more lively during summer, Psalidi is mostly a seaside settlement about 4-5 kilometres from Kos town known for its seafood taverns, few bars and restaurants. Shopping may not be exactly on offer, but there are stores to purchase beach essentials or any sort of hotel supplies. Beaches are available in order to soak up some sun in some parts, yet they are not the area’s strongest feature. The area of Psalidi is also perfect for a walk, a run or a bike ride , since it offers an extended bike lane throughout, separated from the main road. The wetland of Psalidi is a natural shelter for rare and exotic birds in the area (including the pretty pink flamingos) and is positioned somewhere between the area's serene and busy pebbled coasts.

Kos town

Agios Fokas

The area Agios Fokas is found around 4 kilometres, continuing further away from Psalidi. The rich-in-sulphur thermal hot springs of Kos are found here, also known as Therma or Empros Thermes. Therma beach is kind of downwards, surrounded by rocks, forming a dramatic and natural landscape.

Platani is widely known for its few but noteworthy restaurants offering delicious Turkish cuisine , kebabs and other eastern delights. There is a lively muslim community in the settlement of Platani and a hard-to-miss mosque (that of Gazi Hassan Pasha) , built in 1778 by the Algerian Gazi Hassan Pasha. To reach the world-famous Asklepieion of Kos , visitors need to follow the road through Platani’s central square, southwest of Kos town.

Things to Do in Kos Town

Kos Town is, unsurprisingly, the capital of Kos Island and is a destination that seamlessly blends ancient history with modern charm. Its rich historical heritage, stunning beaches, and vibrant atmosphere attract visitors from around the world. Let’s delve into the top things to do in Kos Town.

There are one of two things just a short distance outside of Kos Town that require some form of transport to get there, hence why they aren’t on this list of things to do in Kos Town, but they might be of interest to you. They are:

  • Therma Beach – a small pool full of hot water from a hot spring. It’s unique on the island and certainly worth a visit if you can get there. It’s a short drive east of Kos Town. You’ll find it on our list of things to do in Kos .
  • Asklipieio Kos – this is another archaeological site, but unlike the ones below, you have to pay for entry.

Back to Kos Town – read on to discover the best things to do in Kos Town!

1 | Visit Old Town

Old Town was our favourite part of Kos Town. It’s not very big – only a few streets, but the streets are cute. They are narrow, as you’d expect from a traditional Greek town, and these days are full of souvenir and boutique shops, plus a few restaurants. Head to the very top of Old Town, where you’ll find the cutest restaurants, and you won’t be far away from a few of the archaeological sites.

2 | Explore the Port

The port of Kos Town is the beating heart of the capital. It’s vibrant, well cared for, has shops, eateries, and bike hire and is the place you’ll catch some boat trips from, such as the 3-island boat trip. You’ll also find some little fishing boats among the larger tourist boats, of which some can be hired for fishing trips. You might even catch a glimpse of a small Greek warship.

Explore the Archeological Sites

If you’re a fan of ancient Greek history and architecture, you’ll want to visit the archaeological sites of Kos Town, of which there are quite a few! All of them are free to enter, which is a bonus.

3 | Ancient Agora

First up is the Ancient Agora, dating back to the 5th century BC, and was the central meeting place for the people of Kos. It was the place of political assemblies, social gatherings, and commercial activities in the town. These days, you can explore the ruins of the agora, take a stroll, soak up the history, and enjoy this bit of landscape in the town centre.

4 | Visit Neratzia Castle

Neratzia Castle dates back to the 14th century and has a rich history, having been constructed by the Knights Hospitaller and occupied by various rulers over the centuries. But now, it’s a popular tourist attraction that offers some great views over Kos Town, the port and the promenade.

5 | Roman Odeon of Kos

The Roman Odeon of Kos is an ancient amphitheatre that dates back to the 2nd century AD. It was originally used for musical performances and other cultural events and could seat up to 750 spectators. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction that offers a glimpse into the island’s rich history. The site has been partially restored, and you can explore the remains of the theatre and chambers underneath.

6 | Western Archaeological Zone

The Western Archaeological Zone, as indicated by Google Maps, is home to three different sites, although they all blend into one. They are the Hellenistic Gymnasium, Ancient Gymnasium and Ancient Hippodrome, and sit on the opposite side of the main road to the Roman Odeon of Kos.

20230628 Things to Do in Kos Town 006

7 | Casa Romana

Casa Romana is one of the more well-known archaeological sites in Kos Town. It sits between two car parks and would be easy to miss if you were walking along the main road. Casa Romana is famous for its well-preserved ruins of a Roman villa dating back to the 3rd century AD. The villa was discovered by accident in the early 20th century and has since been restored to its former glory.

8 | Archeological Museum

If you haven’t had enough of archaeology in Kos Town, you can visit the Archeological Museum. The museum is located right in the heart of Kos Town in Eleftherias Central Square and boasts an impressive collection of artefacts collected from the archaeological sites around Kos Town.

The museum features exhibits that range from the Mycenaean and Classical periods to the Hellenistic and Roman eras, and you can feast your eyes on pottery, sculptures, jewellery, and other items that have all been found during the excavations. There’s an entry fee of a few Euros, which is reduced if you happen to be visiting in winter!

9 | See the Plane Tree of Hippocrates

Undoubtedly, the Plane Tree of Hippocrates is one of Kos Town’s and the island’s most famous landmarks. Legend has it that it was planted by the father of modern medicine himself over 2000 years ago. Unfortunately, that legend isn’t true because the tree there today is roughly 500 years old, although it’s likely a descendant of the original tree. It’s also hollowed out and supported by a metal framework, which looks a bit odd. Sadly, the square it lives in could do with a bit of TLC. You can’t miss the tree – you must pass it to enter Neratzia Castle.

10 | Walk the Promenade

If you’re done with walking around the town, head down to the promenade for a little stroll. Down there, you’ll find one of Kos Town’s most iconic buildings – the whitewashed government building built in the 1930s. It’s a great-looking building and best viewed from the jetty opposite.

If you continue down the promenade, you’ll find another entrance to the Ancient Agora, a few other restaurants and the beach.

20230628 Things to Do in Kos Town 002

11 | Visit the Church of Agia Paraskevi

The last of our things to do in Kos Town is to visit the Church of Agia Paraskevi. It’s the largest in Kos Town, and you might hear it referred to as Kos Town Cathedral, although it doesn’t have the grandeur of a cathedral you might find elsewhere.

Which part of the island to choose?

Map of beach resorts on Kos.

  • NORTH : Long flat coastline with sandy beach and resort areas amongst farmland and wetlands.
  • SOUTH : Long sandy beaches nestled behind big mountains, wilder feeling than the north.
  • EAST : Kos Town is in the centre of the short east coast with pebble/coarse sand beaches either side.
  • WEST : West of Kefalos is a rugged and beautiful peninsula with the quietest beaches.

Kos – A Quick Overview

The island’s capital is called Kos Town (or Kos City, as you might see on buses) and this is the main hub for public transport. The airport is at the other end of the island, south of Mastichari. There is a mountainous ridge on the south east coast of the island, but the rest of the island is flat (except the dramatic scenery of the south west tip) – making it popular with cyclists. Kos is surprisingly green and lush too, thanks to the mineral-rich volcanic soil and abundance of water sources.

The main beach resorts – Tigaki, Marmari, and Mastichari – sit along the  excellent sandy beaches of the north coast. There’s another cluster of resorts on the south coast between Kefalos and Kardamena. The north coast can get blasted with fierce northerly winds (the meltemi ) every few days during the summer, which makes it an excellent spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers, but can be pretty unpleasant for the sunbathers. Wind shelters on the beaches are a common sight, but best to travel over to the more sheltered beaches on the south. This works in reverse at the start and end of the season when strong winds from the south are possible.

Kos threw in its towel with package tourism early on. As such, it has a well-established tourist infrastructure and you’ll find no shortage of resorts, amenities and entertainment. However, it fell out of favour with the major tour operators and subsequently is not as lively as it once was, and the lack of investment is apparent in some areas. But it also has one of the best selections of resort hotels (including all-inclusives) in Greece thanks to its endless beaches and flat landscape which is well suited to this type of development. If you’re looking for a beach break on the quieter side then it can represent excellent value. TUI has a large presence on the island. The selection of villas on the island is surprisingly small, especially at the top end – if you want an infinity pool you’ll have to book in to one of the luxury hotels.

Getting Around

Airport: Kos Airport (KGS) is located towards the west of the island, south of Mastichari. There are frequent buses to Kos Town and in high season to the main resorts.

Ferry: The main ferry port is Kos Town however ferries to Pserimos and Kalymnos also run from Mastichari, and in peak summer a route from Kardamena to Nisyros.

For more information on ferries read : The Complete Guide to Island Hopping in Greece

Bus: Island routes are run by KTEL Kos and fan out from Kos Town to the airport and the main resorts. Timetables are regularly updated and flyered at the bus stops. Payment is made on the bus. The main bus station is behind the pedestrianised Old Town area in town.

There are also local town bus routes that travel south east coast towards Therma and also up to Asklepion – these leave from the bus station next to the Gelsomino Albergo hotel and you buy tickets at the booth.

Kos Town Hall

Kos Town is a large and busy town with generous dose of history and good amenities. Although it’s not generally considered one of the most beautiful towns in Greece , Kos has a pleasant harbour area with Neratzia Castle and the striking Italian monuments to one side, a Old Town area nestled in its backstreets, and a surprising number of archaeological sites. Towering palm trees and numerous beaches add to its appeal, as does the excellent cycle path which runs through the town and connects to beaches at either end. It’s a great base if you don’t need to be on the beach all day.

The main tourist drag is to the north of the harbour where you’ll find sports bars and cocktails, shisha, fish tavernas, fish spas, gyms, and a lively strip of course sand beach crammed with sunloungers and daybeds. It feels a bit past its heyday but represents good value and a lively atmosphere.

South of the harbour the atmosphere is completely different – a pleasant tree-lined promenade runs as far as the yacht marina. The streets are leafy and residential, and most of the island’s many hospitals are tucked away in the backstreets.

For a splash of luxury check in to the smart boutique Albergo Gelsomino along the waterfront. This historic Italian building dates back to 1927 and has been restored and decorated in sleek monochrome. The lounge opens out onto a small sandy beach. Next door is the modern Kos Akti Art Hotel which has lower rates but no beach.

If charming family guesthouses are more your style, then check in to Afendoulis Hotel in the southern district for warm hospitality and generous homemade breakfasts in a shady flower-filled garden.

Rather be away from the hustle and bustle? At the back of the town is the established 4-star Diamond Boutique Hotel which is set in lush landscaped gardens and has a pool.

Lambi beach - east side

Lambi is the beach area to the north of Kos Town, it’s essentially a continuation of the town beach and is generally quieter and more pebbly. The main road (and cycle path) runs parallel to the beach. In the summer months it’s a popular spot for beach bars and clubs. The northern end is dominated by the large and lively beachfront 4-star Atlantis Hotel .

The crowds drop away where the coast curves around to the north and towards Tigaki. Here you’ll find a handful of upmarket resort hotels – most of them adults-only – each with access to a bit of beach. The beach here is narrow but more private than the east side of Lambi. The sand is slightly gritty rather than pebbly and most hotels have day beds available.

Sunloungers on Lambi beach - north side

It’s a good area for active couples with the cycle path into town in one direction, and a long coastal promenade in the other towards Tigaki – perfect for an evening runs and bike rides. The hotels here have plenty of space.

The nearest to town are the 5-star Aqua Blu Boutique Hotel and  Lango Design Hotel & Spa , both hard to beat for facilities and design. Further down the promenade you will find the family-friendly TUI Atlantica Thalassa and TUI Blue Lagoon Resort , and the adults-only White Pearls Luxury Suites and Diamond Deluxe .

Bear in mind that all of the hotels here are behind the coastal road road rather than directly on the beach but the distance is minimal.

Pebbly Psalidi beach

Take the cycle path south of Kos Town past the yacht marina and you’ll reach the Psalidi area, home to a long stretch of pebble beach that’s popular with watersports fans. It’s generally a quiet area that’s home to several large resort hotels and is also well equipped with watersports shops, dive centres and various types of rentals – particularly in the northern corner near the wetlands.

At the town end, the beach is narrow with small pebbles and course sand. There are a few budget beach cafes and tavernas around here. Where the beach swerves at an angle it is referred to as Psalidi Ramira thanks to the the large all-inclusive resort located here – the 5-star Mitsis Ramira Beach Hotel . The beach here is wide with medium-sized pebbles.

The beach continues down the length of the east coast with several spacious and well-equipped 5-star resorts at intervals – the Natura Park Village Hotel & Spa , and through TUI the Grecotel Kos Imperial Thalasso and  Oceanis Beach Resort & Spa . These all have direct beach access.

Agios Fokas

Pebbly Agios Fokas beach

Agios Fokas is located where Psalidi turns an abrupt corner and becomes the south coast. There’s not really a village here, but it’s the location of a popular beach bar plus two large and polished all-inclusive hotels – the Michaelangelo Resort & Spa and Dimitra Hotel & Suites . Both are white-washed and manicured, with pleasant landscaping and steps leading down to the dark grey pebble beach which has a distinctly volcanic feel and fabulous views across to Turkey on the horizon.

The town bus runs regularly along the coast to Agios Fokas and occasionally continues on to Therma, popular volcanic springs 2km to the west.

Sunlounders and walkway on Tigaki beach

Tigaki is the first major resort along the north coast. The beach is wide and boasts powder-soft sand with a pale and powdery colour. There’s plenty of room for everyone and there are unorganised sections at either end of the beach. In the middle, you’ll find all sorts of facilities – watersports, lifeguards, day beds, loungers with cafe service, lockers, and even charging stations. If you’re the kind of person who links to plonk yourself down on the beach and not move for a week then Tigaki is perfect.

The main strip extends back from the beach, rather than running alongside it. It’s not a party town but there are plenty of cafes, bar and restaurants – both Greek and international – as well as the usual assortment of souvenir shops, inflatables, rental shops, and tour agencies offering excursions. It’s a feel-good place with friendly vibes. The downside is the occasional fierce winds.

It’s possible to cycle between Tigaki and Kos Town although it’s a too far to regularly pop into town. Bicycle rental is cheap and readily available, and it’s easy to find your own bit of beach if you have a bike. The area around Tigaki and Marmari is sleepy with pastoral scenes (many cows), roadside vegetable-sellers, and wetlands fauna. If cycling is not for you then don’t worry, regular buses and the tourist train also connect Tigaki with Kos Town.

There is a wide selection of good value locally-run hotels. Our top pick is the 4-star More Meni Residences & Suites with its chic neutral styling and central location. Tying for second are the fresh and modern 3-stars Utopia Blu and Oneiro .

If you prefer a larger resort, the Astir Odysseus Resort & Spa is a short distance from Tigaki but has direct access to a quiet beach and plenty of facilities for children.

Daybeds on Marmari beach

4km along the coast from Tigaki, Marmari boasts a similar beach (if anything, the sand is slightly better here) but a smaller and quieter resort. The beach is backed by dunes and tamarisk trees, with a few tavernas along the main road and then one strip of hotels, cafes, and shops. This is the place for couples and families looking for beach bliss. There are many quality resort hotels right on the beach here.

Between Tigaki and Marmari is an area of salt flats with a lake and an abundance of wildlife including flamingos and butterflies.

For adults, the Instagram-friendly OKU Kos ( formerly a Casa Cook hotel ) is a highlight. The decor is stylish boho and the vibe is surpremely chilled. You’ll find yoga and SUP on the activities menu alongside the spa treatment. Next door is the similarly upmarket adults-only D’Andrea Lagoon . It’s a long walk to the main part of Marmari though so best suited to those happy to stay put for a week. In fact, if you’re looking for peace and quiet then the stretches either side of Marmari are a good bet.

For adults-only closer to the strip look at Sandy Beach Hotel and Sunprime Pearl Beach .

Closer to the main strip but still near the beach are the family-friendly TUI Atlantica Marmari Beach , Grecotel Casa Paradiso , and  Holiday Village Atlantica Kos . For beachfront access try the Caravia Beach Hotel .

Marmari even has a posh glamping option – the Sails on Kos Ecolux Tented Village which has safari tents and bell tents.

Walkway and trees on Mastichari beach

Completing the trio of major resorts on the north coast is the likeable Mastichari . This is one of the best places in the Med for windsurfing and kitesurfing and has a bit of a boho vibe (as well as more independent accommodation vs packaged) compared to the other resorts.

The main beach is west-facing, wide and sandy, backed by dunes and large tamarisk trees providing pleasant shade. As well as windsurfing and kitesurfing, SUP and kayaks are available as well as playground, basketball court, and beach volleyball. When the wind isn’t blowing the beach a true delight. The sea is shallow for a long way out so ideal for small children.

There is another small beach in front of the north-facing Mastichari Bay Hotel and on the other side there are a few large resort hotels at the south end of the beach and continuing along the road. Ferries run from Mastichari to Kalymnos and Pserimos .

Mastichari feels the most up-to-date of the Koan beach towns. The beach cafes have a relaxed and modern vibe – think hammocks and rattan – and there is a good variety of eateries. There are a few late bars for evening sessions. The downside is the wind (as ever) and also the prevalence of sea grass late in the season.

To be close to the beach stay in one of the many traditional studios or apartments like the popular Irene Studios .

There are few large resort hotels in Mastichari itself. But drive east for 10-minutes to Tam Tam Beach and you’ll find a cluster – including the TUI MAGIC LIFE Marmari Palace (right next to the Lido Water Park), the Gaia Royal , Smy Princess of Kos , and the Neptune Resort and Spa . A similar distance to the south of Mastichari is the Eurovillage Achilleas Hotel .

Sandy beach at Kardamena

Although it’s not as busy as it once was, Kardamena (also spelt Kardamaina ) is still the liveliest beach resort outside Kos Town. Buses into Kos are less frequent than from Tigaki or Mastichari so you’re more likely to spend your evenings here. The town has a tangle of narrow streets filled with shops, bars, and the occasional nightclub. At the waterfront is a palm-lined harbour and you can find a variety of boat trips on offer.

On either side of the resort is a long strip of shoreline, with an increasing number of all-inclusive resorts perched right behind. There are frequent local shuttle buses into town to connect those further out. The resort itself is flat but the area behind is hilly – it’s possible to hike up to Antimachia Castle along a new paved path.

The main town beach is just next to the harbour. The beach is the widest and sandiest beach and is lined with loungers and cafes. On either side of town the coast gets a little narrow and scrappy with some pebbles. Sand-wise, it’s not on a par with the north coast however it is more sheltered from the wind.

To the north you’ll find the Mitsis Blue Domes Resort & Spa which is the town’s premier hotel offering. Private bungalows with hot tubs and suites with pools are amongst the available options. It’s part of a complex which includes several 4 and 5-star hotels. The Mitsis Summer Palace Beach Hotel has quite spectacular design including infinity pools. The sand on the beach verges towards coarse and pebbly.

If you’re after a package, TUI will take you to the Akti Palace and Akti Beach Club .

Best option in the town is the  highly-rated Kyma Rooms & Suites with clean and modern waterfront rooms.

The beach and resort hotels also continue south of Kardamena for a few miles until the cape at Helona where the landscape gets wilder.

Fishing boats at Kamari harbour

Kefalos is both a wider bay which incorporates a number of small beaches and resorts, as well as a village which is further up the hillside.

At the far end of Kefalos you’ll find Kamari Beach , a small beach next to a fishing harbour and a road that’s lined with cafes. There’s not an abundance of accommodation here but there are a few apartments such as Dionysia Studios .

Promenade between Kamari and Kampos

As the beach widens it becomes Kampos . The road does not run directly alongside but rather behind. There are a few large hotels, restaurants and cafes right on the beach, which is a mix of small colourful pebbles and course sand. This part of Kos is popular with returners and expats looking for a quiet time on the beach, with plenty of space to stretch out. For simple whitewashed rooms have a look at Katherina’s Studios. There are larger hotels towards the north end of Kampos – such as Zeus Hotel – although they do feel a bit dated compared to other resorts on the island. It’s a modest area and you can bag some bargains.

The chic adults-only White Rock of Kos is up on the hills behind Kefalos.

Ruins of Agios Stefanos basilica with Kampos beach in the background

At the northern end of the bay is postcard-perfect Agios Stefanos , where you’ll find the remains of an ancient basilica right next to two sandy beaches. Strong swimmers can make a trip to the small island of Kastri with its picturesque lone church.

The Ikos Aria resort occupies the whole area behind Agios Stefanos beach and is one of the most appealing luxury resorts on the island – it’s a truly beautiful setting.

Agios Stefanos beach

This area is also perfect for those happy to rent their own vehicle and explore beaches further afield. To the east of Kefalos Bay is the expansive Golden Beach (or Chryssi Akti ), a long stretch of beach with very soft ash-like sand and backed by scenic cliffs. You’ll often see sections of beach given their own name, usually after a nearby taverna or bar with parking (such as Paradise Beach, Magic Beach, Markos Beach). The former has a popular beach bar playing chilled out beats. It gets quieter and wilder the further east you go.

The only hotel here is the secluded TUI Blue Lagoon Village .

On the wild and steep headland west of Kefalos there are are a number of quiet beaches worth seeking out such as Cavo Paradiso and Limnionas. Quad and buggy rental is common down this end of Kos.
