Vancouver Souvenirs: 10 Perfect Canadian Souvenirs and Gifts to Buy in the City

There are so many things to buy in Vancouver. There is high-end retail, there are locally made products and there are iconic Canadian items. When you are visiting the city, whether it is your first time or you are looking for a gift for a friend, keep an eye out for these perfect Vancouver souvenirs.

Lululemon Pants

Now available around the world, Lululemon’s roots lie in Vancouver as it was created here in 1998 by Chip Wilson. Check out its original store in Vancouver and shop for the world-loved yoga brand that is responsible for changing Vancouver’s style and yoga culture over the last 20 years. While you may not think of Lululemon when you think of what to buy in Vancouver, it is something that should be on your souvenir shopping list!

VANCITY Gear

Vancity Original Brand has been on the streets of Vancouver since 1998 and it makes the perfect Vancouver souvenir to bring home from your visit! It has become the staple brand for Vancouverites, international tourists, and fashion-forward consumers.

You can pick up your own Van City Original at 819 Hornby St

Roots Clothing

Roots clothing is known for its craftsmanship and functionality. Comfy sweats are also back in style and sweatpants and hoodies are all over retail store windows. I live in their sweatpants when I am at home and there is nothing comfier in my wardrobe. If you are shopping for the best souvenirs in Vancouver that you can wear for years to come, grab yourself a pair of Roots sweatpants or a sweatshirt, or bring one home for someone who loves comfort.

Canadian Souvenir Maple Syrup

Probably what most people think of as one of the things that represent Canada is maple syrup. Available in gift shops across the country, as well as in airports and grocery stores, grab some to take home as it is one of the best presents from Vancouver. If you want the best bag for your buck, grab a bottle from Costco! (But make sure you put this Canadian souvenir in your checked luggage as it is too much liquid for carry on luggage). If you are looking for small bottles, you can often find them while shopping at Winners or Home Sense, and of course, at gift shops, hotel shops, and the airport!

Maple syrup souvenirs in containers.

Despite what seems like dryer winters and hot dry summers, Vancouver receives a lot of rain! Grab yourself an umbrella while you are in the city as a momento of your visit! If the rainy weather is getting to you, head indoors with one of these things to do in Vancouver.

An Inukshuk is a figure made of mild stones or boulders used as a form of communication throughout Canada’s Arctic. They were traditionally constructed by the Inuit and have become intertwined with representations of Canada. In the Arctic, they are used for practical reasons, such as navigational aids, coordination points, and message centers. They have also been known to be used for spiritual means. These are some of the most common Vancouver souvenirs that you will find at almost any gift shop in Canada. The Inukshuk was the basis of the Vancouver Olympic logo and you can find a huge Inukshuk (and plenty of souvenirs) when you arrive in Whistler .

British Columbia has dozens of wineries and quite a few tasting rooms outside of the city. If you have time to explore Metro Vancouver you can visit them, but if you do not, walk into a liquor store and check out the huge selection of BC wines available. This is something you can always grab at the Duty Free if you are flying out of YVR

Vancouver Chocolate Gifts

Vancouver has two big chocolate brands, Rogers Chocolates and Purdy’s Chocolates ! Purdy’s is my personal favorite and makes a great gift to bring home to your friends and family! I personally recommend the white chocolate or the tiger butter! Rogers chocolates originated in nearby Victoria in the 1800s and is still owned by local Canadians today! Purdy’s chocolates started right in downtown Vancouver in 1907 and still maintains a small family ownership model.

Nanaimo Bars

The Nanaimo Bar is a truly Canadian confectionary named after the city of Nanaimo. This no bake dessert consists of 3 layers: the base, the buttercream, and the chocolate ganache. The earliest recorded recipe for the Nanaimo bar appeared in the 1950’s. Since then, The Nanaimo Bar has become a Canadian Favourite. For the best experience, enjoy this bar chilled. Great with Coffee, Tea, Ice wine, or even Stout Beer. Grab them from Northern Bars on Granville Island (or in various locations around BC) or order some online!

You can even find them at the Duty Free in Vancouver Airport!

Smoked Salmon

A staple in the diet of the Indigenous peoples, salmon is something you should enjoy while in Vancouver. And with the portability of smoked salmon, it makes an excellent gift from Vancouver to bring home to your friends. Try the candied one if you get a chance, it’s one of my favorites. You can buy smoked salmon in gift shops, grocery stores, Costco, and Duty-Free shops! You can also find it in local markets and places like Granville Island.

Vancouver Food Scene CookBooks

Vancouver’s culinary scene has been partly shaped by the chefs who call the city home. As chefs have turned into celebrities, so too have their dishes. Whether you check out Vikram Vij’s restaurants or his take home dishes and cookbooks, or Iron Chef Rob Feenie’s creations at Cactus Club, if you are a foodie and in Vancouver, you should bring some of Vancouver’s food scene home with you!

Check out Vikram Vij’s cookbooks here  or Rob Feenie’s here .

Indigenous Jewelry and Coastal Native Art

There are hundreds of incredibly talented Indigenous artists that live and work in the Vancouver area. Growing up outside the city, I have been lucky enough to know a few of them and have seen their artwork in studios, as coveted jewelry, and as giant art pieces on buildings. Small markets will have local art and so will gift shops. You can even find some beautiful pieces on places like the BC Ferries if you are going to Vancouver to Victoria. Or pick one up while souvenir shopping in Victoria . When looking for any First Nations art, ensure you are shopping for locally made products, not imported goods that are made in a factory!

Sports Memorabilia: Canucks , Whitecaps and BC Lions

Vancouver has three major sports franchises and a bunch of other professional sports teams. The top three are the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks, the MLS Vancouver Whitecaps and the CFL’s BC Lions. The Vancouver Canucks are the hockey team that the city loves and loves to hate. Vancouverites love cheering for a winning team and are the first to stop buying tickets when their team is in a slump. But win or lose, Vancouver is full of Canucks gear and a souvenir that says “VANCOUVER” would be some Vancouver Canucks gear! The Vancouver Whitecaps are Vancouver’s top tier soccer club that play right downtown. The BC Lions are Vancouver’s CFL Team (Canada’s version of the NFL with different rules).

Resources for Visiting Vancouver in 2023

Whether you are planning your trip to Canada, or are already here, these resources should help you, wherever you may be in the country.

Things to Pack When Visiting Canada

  • A good rain jacket (even in the summer for Vancouver )
  • Power bank to charge phones and other devices while on the go all day.
  • A Universal Adapter is going to be handy for International Visitors. Canada uses the same plugs as the USA but if you are coming from somewhere else abroad, grab yourself one before you arrive.
  • Reusable water bottle

Renting a Car in British Columbia

Rental Cars are very popular in British Columbia and the best way to get around if you are visiting anywhere outside of the downtown area of Vancouver. Make sure to book a  rental car  before you arrive.

Best shopping in Vancouver

Red Cat Records

1.  Red Cat Records

As other record shops fall one by one, vinyl fans still flock to Red Cat's two locations (the original is on Main Street) for an eclectic selection of music and highly knowledgeable staff. The shop is named for a very large cat named Buddy, who was a fixture at the shop—and even inspired a concept album ( My Name is Buddy ) by guitarist Ry Cooder—until his passing in 2006.

Lululemon

2.  Lululemon

Sure you can find Lululemon all over the world, but the yoga-slash-athletic wear chain started in Kitsilano in 1998, so the West 4th location is definitely worth a visit. Get your yoga pants and running gear here.

John Fluevog

3.  John Fluevog

Another iconic, Vancouver-born brand, John Fluevog has been known for its unique, well-made shoes since its namesake designer co-founded the company in 1970. The flagship location in Gastown feels like an art gallery, which is fitting as the shoes are works of art. While they may be a little pricey, these shoes will last and are sure to make a statement.

Inform Interiors

4.  Inform Interiors

Whether you’re looking for a new piece of furniture or you just appreciate exceptional design, Inform Interiors in Gastown is worth a visit. The company is owned by Niels Bendtsen, designer of the Ribbon chair that is now in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Browse classic and contemporary furniture, lighting, home accessories, and a bookstore dedicated to architecture and design.

The Paper Hound

5.  The Paper Hound

Book lovers can’t get enough of this eclectic shop, which carries new, used, and rare books. The classics are well represented, but spend some time poking around the 9,000-plus books to find some of the more eccentric titles on offer. Pro tip: Follow The Paper Hound’s Instagram account for pics of rare titles alongside clever commentary.

6.  Eugene Choo

Main Street is full of trendy, locally-owned shops featuring Canadian designers, but we like the selection at local staple Eugene Choo. The shop features a range of Canadian designers and curated unisex threads that range from casual to classic. The shop is also housed in a cottage that used to be a  small mercantile.

7.  The Latest Scoop

This independent lifestyle concept store started in 2004 as a pop-up shop featuring quality goods from around the world. Now with multiple locations, The Latest Scoop offers a curated selection of women’s fashion, home décor, furniture, and gifts with an eye towards beauty and affordability. The pop-up vibe remains, as inventory is constantly changing.

Dutil Denim

8.  Dutil Denim

If you're looking for the perfect pair of jeans, Dutil Denim is your best bet. The huge selection of denim includes premium brands and a range of styles, sizes, shades, and even denim types (raw selvedge, eco-friendly and the like). Attentive staff are there to help you get the best fit, whether you prefer boot-cut, skinny, or relaxed.

Roden Gray

9.  Roden Gray

This Gastown shop features contemporary men’s fashions from top international brands, many of which aren’t available anywhere else in the city. Prices are on the higher side, but you won’t find a better selection of clothing, shoes, belts, and accessories. There’s even a selection of candles, perfumes, books, and magazines to complete the vibe.

Ming Wo Cookware

10.  Ming Wo Cookware

Ming Wo has been in business since 1917, although the original Chinatown location closed in 2020. All the more reason to pay a visit to the other two spots. Marvel at the extensive selection of knives, pans, bakeware, and other cooking accessories as you dream of being as talented as the Vancouver chefs who have shopped here for generations.

Holt Renfrew

11.  Holt Renfrew

Brands like Gucci, Dior, Balmain, and other top designers are the standard at this chic, high-end Canadian department store. Treat yourself to top names in shoes, accessories, handbags, and beauty. You’ll find fashions for both men and women, and personal shopping assistance is available if you need a second pair of arms.

12.  Devil May Wear

Head to Devil May Wear for fashionable intimates that are both sexy and sustainable. In addition to unique, eco-friendly lingerie, the shop offers a selection of women’s clothing, jewelry, accessories, and home goods. Most products are made locally in their Main Street studio, and the shops offer the broadest range of sizes possible, with free small alterations available.

Old Faithful Shop

13.  Old Faithful Shop

Located in a historic 1903 building in Gastown, Old Faithful Shop’s airy, modern interior sets the stage for beautiful, well-designed home goods that are destined to become the trusty, go-to pieces that you can rely on for years. Find kitchenware, lighting, bath goods, furniture, pantry items, and more, all designed to last.

Hill's Native Art

14.  Hill's Native Art

Hill’s Native Art has one of the largest collections of First Nations and Inuit art in North America, with authentic pieces from emerging and internationally-renowned Native artists, representing each Northwest Coast tribe. Take your time while examining a variety of prints, carvings, totem poles, paintings, jewelry, crafts, and clothing. It’s a beautiful shop to browse and a great place to find uniquely Canadian art for the home.

Gravitypope

15.  Gravitypope

This beautiful boutique on West 4th in Kitsilano carries a large selection of stylish shoes for men and women in elegant digs. With '60s Sputnik chandeliers hanging overhead and large marble tables displaying the goods, you’ll want to take in the atmosphere while browsing for the perfect pair. A footwear institution, Gravitypope started in Edmonton and has grown to include several locations that also sell clothing and accessories.

Comor Sports

16.  Comor Sports

This outdoor store’s motto is “Go play outside,” and they’ll help you do that. Vancouver is a top destination for outdoor activities, so for the best ski, snowboard, and bike selection, Comor Sports has you covered. The staff are all outdoor enthusiasts, so you know you’ll get just what you need for your next outdoor adventure.

17.  Front & Company

This longtime favourite on Main Street features high-quality consignment clothing, vintage jewelry, collectibles, and antiques alongside unique gifts and items for the home. Never stale or stagnant, the consignment inventory always matches current trends.

Hills of Kerrisdale

18.  Hills of Kerrisdale

This clothing shop has been in business since 1914, and the building still has the vintage feel of an early 19th-century shop. Though it’s proud of its history (it is owned by a third generation of the Hill family), Hills of Kerrisdale’s merch is thoroughly modern, with top fashion brands for men and women. Stop in for a bit of history and a great shopping experience.

19.  Attic Treasures and Mid Century Modern

Mid-century modern decor is the specialty at this East Vancouver shop, but you’ll also find vintage furniture, fixtures and housewares from the 1920s to the '70s. Pick up some tiki mugs or an art deco piece to add a bit of kitsch to your home.

Public Markets

Checking out the public markets around Vancouver can be a delightful experience for tourists and locals alike. In the summer you’ll find Farmer’s Markets in every neighbourhood selling organic produce, artisanal foods, and handcrafted decor. The open air markets near the waterfront will always have the best fresh fish and seafood. Even if you just want to windowshop, the energy and excitement within these markets always gives good vibes and provides a feeling of connectedness within the local community.

Lonsdale Quay North Vancouver

The Lonsdale Quay Market was opened as a carnival-style marketplace for the 1986 Vancouver World Expo. It is now home to around 80 fresh food vendors, retail shops, artisans, and restaurants. Lonsdale Quay can be found across the Vancouver Harbour on the North Shore, overlooking the harbour and the Downtown Vancouver skyline. You can book a room and stay for the night at the Lonsdale Quay Hotel , an adorable boutique hotel located within the market’s vibrant atmosphere.

Granville Island Public Market

Granville Island Public Market is located on Granville Island, a peninsula and shopping district situated along False Creek. The market itself is Granville Island’s main attraction, offering an incredible array of fresh produce, seafood, and baked goods. You’ll find all kinds of handcrafted wares, unique gifts, and locally inspired pieces of art. Outside of the market you’ll find even more incredible shopping opportunities such as the Kid’s Market, art studios, boutique clothing shops, and charming craft stores.

Richmond Night Market

Richmond Night Market is open during the summer months, from May to October. This outdoor, open air market is only one block away from the Bridgeport SkyTrain station. The market is filled with all kinds of vendors selling trinkets, clothing, beauty products, collectibles, and a whole slew of other unique and wonderful items. The food stalls are loaded with delicious tidbits from around the world, including dishes from Brazil, China, Korea, the Philippines, Germany, and Japan. There is plenty of entertainment to be enjoyed as well, such as musicians, dance teams, martial arts displays, and roaring dinosaurs contained within the Magical Dino Park.

Popular Shopping Districts

Vancouver has all kinds of interesting little neighborhoods that offer their own unique shopping experiences. For popular North American brand names and fashion outlets, head over to Robson Street. You’ll find stores like lululemon, Sephora, Aritzia, and Roots. Travel one block over to Alberni Street to find the upscale shops of Vancouver’s Luxury Zone. Burberry, Prada, Rolex, and Tiffany & Co. can all be found here in the company of other high-end jewelry and clothing stores.

Yaletown Vancouver

In Yaletown, a former industrial district, you’ll find designer clothing stores, hip galleries, chic restaurants, and cozy cafes. The old warehouses have been converted into modern amenities but the atmosphere is still full of brick, steel, and turn of the century charm.

Gastown Vancouver

Gastown is another historic neighborhood in Vancouver and here you’ll find cobblestone streets, antique street lamps, and the famous Gastown Steam Clock. There are plenty of gift shops, clothing stores, and art galleries to peruse as you make your way through the old Victorian buildings.

The Best Shopping in Vancouver: Malls, Districts, & Boutiques

Shopping in Vancouver is a great way to counterbalance all of our nature (as bad as that may sound).

Whether it’s American-style mega-malls, high-end fashion boutiques, antique shops, or vintage clothing the Vancouver shopping experience has it all.

Here are the 10 best places to shop in Vancouver for a little retail therapy – and what to buy if you’re visiting.

  • Granville Island : Best for locally made products & gifts
  • Metrotown : Best mall in Vancouver
  • Main Street : Best for boutique shopping
  • Robson Street : Best Vancouver shopping street
  • Gastown : Best for souvenirs and jewellery
  • Chinatown : Best bargain shopping
  • Commercial Drive : Best for unique stores
  • West 4th Avenue : Best clothing stores in Vancouver
  • Richmond Centre : Best shopping for international chains
  • Pacific Centre : Best Vancouver department stores

Best Vancouver Shopping

Granville island public market.

When visitors ask me where to shop in Vancouver this is the first thing that comes to mind.

Granville Island Public Market and its many artisan shopping spaces are famous for studio-blown glass, blacksmiths, broom makers, and local Vancouver clothing stores. In other words, unique stores and unique products.

vancouver whale tour banner

In all, expect a wide variety of shops ranging from arts and crafts to food and drink . There is also a lively atmosphere, with street performers and buskers adding their unique touches to the ambiance.

I always come here for the candied salmon and artisan cheeses, but the first stop I take visitors is the Eagle Spirit Gallery for some amazing Northwest Coast Native art.

The entrance to Metropolis at Metrotown, Burnaby BC

Metrotown Centre

Metrotown Centre is the largest shopping mall in Vancouver .

With over 450 stores , it’s a great place to find everything from clothing stores to electronics. Major shops include Hudson’s Bay Company, Oomomo Japan, Uniqlo, Zara, and H&M.

If you need a break from all these Vancouver shops, there are also plenty of other things to do like catching a movie at the cinema or taking a stroll in the beautiful garden.

The mall is located in the suburb of Burnaby, about 20 minutes east of Vancouver. So you’ll need to take Vancouver public transit to visit from downtown.

Main Street

It’s fitting that this main Vancouver shopping street is named, well, Main Street. You’ll find this hipstery area just a 10 minute drive from downtown Vancouver .

The vibe here is much more quirky and antiquey than designer.

As a result, this historic shopping district is home to an eclectic mix of shops, ranging from vintage clothing stores to art galleries. It’s also famous for some of Vancouver’s best cafes .

You’ll find the majority of the best shops between 33rd and 16th . The Bohemia Gallery is a great stop for vintage clothes, while 49th Parallel Cafe and their hand crafted donuts is the best spot to quench caffeine cravings.

Robson Street

Shopping areas in Vancouver are in ample supply, but Robson Street is the only one that would dare challenge Rodeo Drive, 5th Avenue, or Oxford Street.

Of course, this downtown Vancouver street isn’t as prestigious but it houses a variety of large international chains . You can also venture to neighbouring Alberni Street for premium European brands such as Gucci, Prada and Burberry.

When you’re finished shopping, you can refuel at one of this shopping street’s many cafes and eateries. Fans of Korean food or ramen in particular will want to venture to the strips Westernmost edge towards Denman Street.

If you’re looking for the best shopping in Vancouver head to Gastown . This historic neighbourhood is home to a wide variety of shops, from high-end boutiques to local art galleries .

Gastown is that Vancouver shopping district for unique gifts and souvenirs . The Coastal People’s Gallery is fantastic for aboriginal art, local British Columbia gem jade jewellery is on offer at the Jade Store , and John Fluevog is a fantastic local shoe shop.

And if you need a break from shopping, there are plenty of Gastown restaurants to get your fix – the area is home to some of the most creative, envelope pushing restaurants in the city.

Shopping in Vancouver’s Chinatown is a unique cultural experience that can’t be found anywhere else in the city. You can find everything from traditional Chinese goods to ancient herbal remedies and knockoff designer handbags.

These downtown Vancouver shops are often crowded and chaotic, but that’s part of the charm. Bargaining is expected, so don’t be afraid to haggle.

Also sure to try some of the delicious street food: stir fried sticky rice cakes at Bao Bei are a good start, while the apple tarts at Boss Bakery offer a sweet shopping companion.

The intersection of 1st and Commercial, Little Italy Vancouver

Commercial Drive

Commercial Drive was once the city’s Little Italy. Today it’s more a hub for the LGTBQ+ and hipster communities – let’s call it the perfect blend of modernity and old-world tradition .

In all, this eclectic neighbourhood is home to a variety of unique stores in Vancouver, ones that offer rare treasures far from typical international chains.

The Found and the Freed is a great Vancouver antique shopping space, Exposure Home goes rustic-chic on home decorating, and Kalena’s Shoes is the best Italian-made shoe shop in the city.

Take a walk along ‘the Drive’ between 1st Avenue and Venables and you’ll find all sorts of vintage clothing shops, artsy giftables , and some of the city’s best ethnic restaurants.

A sign along the shopping district of West 4th, Kitsilano

West 4th Avenue

Vancouver’s answer to Haight-Asbury in the 60’s and 70’s, West 4th Avenue now offers a relaxed, beachy vibe contrasting the hustle of nearby downtown. Walk it from Fir Street to Balsam street for the meat of it.

If you’re looking for shopping in Vancouver this is the place to be for quality. Think sustainable active wear, ski and snowboard shops, and unique clothing stores – then thrown in some spas, salons, and even a Whole Foods.

This Kitsilano street is best known as the birthplace of Lululemon.  That said,  I prefer the ubiquitous Canadian clothing shop Roots or the contemporary boutique clothing at Gravitypope .

People shopping at Richmond Centre, Richmond BC

Richmond Centre

Richmond Centre offers some of the best shopping in Vancouver if you just want a solid mall experience.

The mall is home to over 200 stores , including major retailers like Hudson’s Bay, H&M and Japanese retailer Muji. Richmond Centre is also a popular destination for dining and entertainment , with a wide variety of restaurants and cafes, as well as a Cineplex cinema.

The mall is located in the heart of Richmond, right near Vancouver International Airport . It’s just a short trip on the Skytrain from downtown Vancouver. It also makes it a good pairing with a visit to Steveston or the nearby Golden Village , to sample the best Asian cuisine in North America.

The entrance to Pacific Centre, Vancouver BC

Pacific Centre

This is where to go shopping in Vancouver if you’re kind of locked to downtown.

The Pacific Centre Mall reall delivers, especially if you’re looking for department stores . Consider this a bit more high end than the other Vancouver shopping malls on this list.

Located at the prime intersection of Granville Street and Robson Street, the mall houses Nordstrom, Hudson’s Bay, and Canadian luxury department store Holt Renfrew .

Among the 120+ stores you’ll find international staples like H&M, Harry Rosen, Michael Kors, and the Apple Store.

What to Buy in Vancouver

A Nuuchahnuth hummingbird panel at Eagle Spirit Gallery

Local First Nations Art

There’s no better place to find unique, handmade items than at a local First Nations art market. These can usually be found around popular tourist areas, such as Granville Island, Gastown and Stanley Park .

Popular local stores that focus on this niche include Hill’s Native Art , Cheryl’s Trading Post , and the Coastal Peoples Fine Arts Gallery.

Also, you’ll find some pretty amazing pieces at the gift shops of the Bill Reid Gallery , Gulf of Georgia Cannery , or Museum of Anthropology .

Expect wide variety of art including paintings, sculptures, jewelry, pottery, and more. You can even find every day household and kitchen items done up in the local indigenous-style.

The products are all sourced from artists from local First Nations communities, so their work is deeply rooted in tradition.

The art markets are a great way to support local artists, and they’re also a lot of fun to browse.

Coffee mugs at District Factory Outlet, Vancouver BC

Vancouver Themed Souvenirs

Whether it’s a mug with a scenic photo of the city, a t-shirt or a keychain with the Vancouver skyline, there are plenty of great gift options for those who love Vancouver.

When people ask me where to shop in Vancouver for souvenirs I tell them to hit Gastown, Chinatown and Robson Street.

If you’re looking for something a little less tacky yet equally ‘Vancouvery’ then I’d check out Vancity Original clothing.

Sports fans can also get Vancouver Canucks fan wear from the official Canucks team store .

Fashionistas (sorry for the term!) may also enjoy a piece of Lululemon yoga wear, a brand which originated in the city. While local clothing retailer Aritzia has been recently cosigned by celebrities such as J-Lo and Kendall Jenner.

Vancouver Maple Syrup

I’m gonna be completely honest, maple syrup is not in any way, shape or form representative of the city of Vancouver. In fact, if you’re from virtually anywhere else in North America the odds are you live much closer to a syrup producing region than we do.

In spite of this fact, virtually every time I host a visitor from another country they insist on going home with a jug of the stuff.

Made from the sap of maple trees, maple syrup is a taste sweet and unique deliciousness that is guaranteed to please. And to many, it is the most prototypically Canadian of treats. So why not bring some home with you?

You can find it at many Vancouver-area shops, at Granville Island. Maple syrup is a great way to show your loved ones how much you care about them, and a tasty reminder of all the amazing things that Vancouver (Quebec :P) has to offer.

British Columbia Smoked Salmon

Looking for the truly perfect Vancouver food gift?

Look no further than wild smoked salmon. This lip-smacking delicacy is a local favorite, and it makes a great gift for any occasion. It actually travels well too, since the process was actually used for centuries to preserve the fish.

There are many different ways to prepare smoked salmon, so you can find a recipe that suits your taste.

Local indigenous peoples usually prefer a heavier double smoked variety. However, typical European or Asian palettes may find it a little strong. So if you’re looking for something a little milder and moister, than you may want to opt for a cold smoked variety.

Got a sweet tooth? Than you’ll love a few nuggets of candied salmon.  This candied variety of smoked salmon is tossed in sugar, salt and maple syrup to create a flavour explosion. That said, choose wisely. The deep red flesh and high oil content of the local wild sockeye salmon blows any farmed impostors out of the water.

The Vancouver stores for this delicious gift are found in Steveston, Granville Island or the Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver . But any high end grocery store or fish monger will also suffice.

Whether you prefer it cold or hot, smoked salmon is sure to please. And what’s more, it’s a healthy option that is full of nutrients and Omega-3 fatty acids.

A unique Cowichan Sweater

Cowichan Sweaters

Fashioned by Coast Salish knitters on Vancouver Island , these bulky weighted-yarn sweaters are the ultimate tool to help defeat a cold Canadian Winter. Each sweater possesses a unique, hand-knit design.

The local popularity of the sweaters in the mid 1900’s led to appropriation of the style by a myriad of international designers. However, Canada’s West Coast is the only true home of the real thing.

A great Vancouver option is Cheryl’s Trading Post , an independent aboriginal-owned, operated, and staffed business specializing in authentic handmade Native art.

While actually originating from the Cowichan region just North of Victoria , these popular sweaters are one of the few internationally renown items truly unique to British Columbia.

Looking Forward to Shopping Vancouver?

That should take care of all your Vancouver shopping needs.

Whether you’re looking for the finest designer clothing or just a local trinket, the city should more than meet your needs.

I would add Point Grey Village. I would suggest visit Gild & Co, Burgoo, Habit Trading. Richmond Centre is not in Vancouver.

Thanks for the suggestions Amanda! And yes, we’re aware it’s not in Vancouver 🙂

Best Shopping in Vancouver

Natasha John

LAST UPDATED BY Natasha John September 18, 2015

Small boutiques with one-of-a-kind items, big department stores, local artisans and high-end haute couture are what make up Vancouver’s diverse shopping experience. Whether you're looking to splurge or save some money by window shopping, each neighborhood has something special to offer.

Granville Island is one of Vancouver's most popular shopping areas for both locals and visitors. The market has just about everything you could want: fragrant fresh flowers, artisan cheeses, gourmet meals, a kids' market, art, jewelery and pretty much everything in between can be found at Granville Island.

One of Vancouver's most anticipated stores has opened its doors and locals are pretty excited about it. The much-loved department store, Nordstrom , has built itself a home in the city and it's safe to say they've got you covered. From high-end labels to three different dining options, it's easy to spend an afternoon here.

For designer goods at a fraction of the cost, make your way out to the  McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport . Here you'll find familiar high-end brands like Coach, Cole Haan, Hugo Boss and Armani, to name just a few, at discounted prices. Don't have a car? No sweat. The Canada Line station is just a stone's throw from the outlet so you can leave the car at home.

South Granville

South Granville

South Granville is a bit of an eclectic shopping district with its high end clothing stores, expensive antiques and art galleries, mixed in with banks, restaurants, cafes and popular stores like Chapters, Williams and Sonoma, Anthropologie and Pottery Barn. It's a busy shopping district that caters to practically everyone's needs with its diverse shopping options. If your wallet isn't deep enough to bring home some big-ticket items, don't refrain yourself from stepping into the art galleries. Scott Landon Antiques has some beautiful pieces of antique furniture that are hard to walk away from, but worth looking at, even if it is just with adoration.

Recommended for Best Shopping because : South Granville is a delightful mix of high-end and affordable boutiques; there's something for everyone.

Natasha's expert tip : Meinhardt is a lovely gourmet grocery store that will inspire a beautiful meal at home.

A first-timer’s guide to Vancouver Island

Explore stately Victoria (pictured), hike long-distance trails, catch a wave in Tofino and much more besides on Vancouver Island © Aaron Black / Getty Images RFC

Once dismissed as a sleepy retirement home for aging Anglophiles, Vancouver Island has acquired a racier profile in recent years, courtesy of its free-spirited surfing towns, pastoral wineries, community-built biking networks and extravagantly eccentric accommodations.

If you’ve ever spent time fantasizing about “hanging ten” in Tofino , sleeping in spherical treehouses, visiting Canada ’s only commercial tea farm or climbing above the forest canopy on a wooden skywalk, welcome to heaven.

Here's everything you need to know before you visit Vancouver Island for the first time.

When should I go to Vancouver Island?

Most of Vancouver Island has a relatively mild climate. Victoria , in the south, is the balmiest city in Canada, while the nearby Cowichan Valley, famed for its viticulture, is practically Mediterranean. These two areas can be visited year round, although late spring and summer are the driest times. Tofino is another year-round destination with surfing conditions at their best in September and October. The storm-watching season runs from November through February when the winter squalls are spectacular.

Read more:  A postcard from Vancouver Island: a storm-watching trip in photos

The months of July, August and September enjoy dry, semi-drought conditions, perfect for east and west coast beaches and long-distance hikes such as the West Coast Trail (open May 1 to September 30). Most of the island’s rain falls between mid-October and April. For Mt Washington skiers, the winter season usually runs from early December to early April.

For the best prices, avoid high summer and public holidays (Canada has one every month). Some of the island’s smaller towns – most notably Tofino – can get very crowded during the school summer holidays (July and August), meaning you’ll need to book accommodations months in advance.

Mant people are milling around beside a fountain outside the Legislative Assembly Parliament Building of British Columbia in Victoria, on a sunny day.

How much time should I spend on Vancouver Island?

Short island breaks from Vancouver can be spread over a long weekend, although once you’ve factored in ferry travel, you probably won’t get much further than Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula. To take in additional highlights, such as the Cowichan Valley and Tofino, bank on at least five days. If you’re aiming to visit the island’s wilder north coast and/or indulge in some backcountry adventures, one week is the bare minimum.

How do I get to Vancouver Island?

The only way to get to the island from the mainland is by ferry or airplane. Victoria International Airport has connections to major Canadian cities, plus Seattle in the US. Small planes serve airports in Port Hardy, Campbell River, Tofino and Nanaimo . Harbour Air runs seaplanes between Vancouver and Victoria harbors.

The main ferry services are run by BC Ferries , which operates vessels between Tsawwassen (Vancouver) and Swartz Bay (for Victoria); Tsawwassen and Duke Point (Nanaimo); and Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) and Departure Bay (Nanaimo). There’s also a smaller central island ferry that runs between Comox and Powell River on the Sunshine Coast. All Vancouver Island ferries carry cars.

Direct international ferries connect Port Angeles in Washington State , USA, with Victoria. The  Black Ball car ferry runs four times a day in either direction in the summer and twice a day in the winter. The journey lasts 90 minutes. The passenger-only  Victoria Clipper ferry operates daily between Victoria and Seattle, USA.

Is it easy to get around Vancouver Island?

In short, yes. While the island has a relatively scant road network, especially in the north and west, the main highways are in good condition and a car will get you to most places that are of interest to travelers.

The island’s main north-south highway runs between Victoria and Port Hardy – a total distance of 500km (311 miles). It’s called Hwy 1 (the Trans-Canada Highway) between Victoria and Nanaimo and Hwy 19 further north.

Vancouver Island Connector has one daily bus in either direction between Victoria and Tofino, stopping at Nanaimo, Port Alberni and several other towns.  Island Link offers a more comprehensive service running multiple buses between Victoria and Tofino, Victoria and Campbell River, and Campbell River and Port Hardy. Book at least a day in advance.

There are currently no public trains operating on the island.

A small group of surfers are carrying surfboards as they leave the water and walk onto the sand of Long Beach, Vancouver Island

Top things to do on Vancouver Island

Surf or storm-watch in tofino.

Abutting the turbulent seas of the Pacific Ocean with a necklace of broad sandy beaches,  Tofino is, inarguably, the best place in Canada to go surfing. From semicircular Cox Bay (host of numerous surfing competitions) to blustery Long Beach inside Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, the swells are legendary – and not just for their wave-riding potential. Backed by a smattering of low-rise accommodations, Tofino has become a popular storm-watching destination in recent decades, with its winter tempests perfectly complementing the elemental surroundings.

Sit down to afternoon tea in Victoria

While Victoria is an increasingly diverse city, it still clings in part to the British traditions of its past, a legacy reflected in its grand legislative building, “royal” museum and local penchant for afternoon tea. The tea ritual prevails in an array of refined cafes and tearooms scattered around town, where fluffy scones and dainty cakes are paired with refreshing cups of orange pekoe sipped from fine china.

The poshest – and also most expensive – place to partake in the repast is the  Fairmont Empress Hotel , where “high tea” (finger sandwiches, homemade pastries and fresh scones) is served in a regal lounge.

Visit a cidery in the Cowichan Valley

The Cowichan Valley is Vancouver Island’s own Provence, where gentle hills and a warm Mediterranean-like climate provide a fertile environment for vineyards, farm-to-table restaurants and craft drinks. A notable innovator is  Merridale , a craft-cider maker and microdistillery in the farming community of Cobble Hill, whose rustic grounds are speckled with a gnarly orchard and large, gabled barns. Inside, there’s a tasting bar dispatching samples of the fruity booze, a patio bistro serving crusty apple pie and posh yurts for overnight stays.

Feel the full force of nature on the West Coast Trail

Muddy, swampy and slow-going for much of its course, the perennially popular  West Coast Trail is one of Canada’s most celebrated hikes. The 75km (47-mile) trail of ladders, bridges, creek crossings, rock-hopping and beachcombing hugs the Pacific shoreline for most of its course and incorporates large tracts of Indigenous land. You’ll need a permit, camping equipment and between five and seven days to complete it, but despite fickle weather and the ruggedness of the beaches and adjacent forest, the rewards are immense. Book your passage well in advance.

See one of Canada’s best Indigenous cultural museums in Alert Bay

Head north to Alert Bay on tiny Cormorant Island to see one of the best manifestations of Indigenous culture in Canada. The  U’mista Cultural Centre is a unique museum modeled on a wooden longhouse that displays a vast collection of Kwakwaka'wakw artifacts – including masks, carvings and totems – reclaimed after being confiscated by Canadian authorities in the early 20th century, when potlatch gift-giving ceremonies were prohibited.

Climb above the forest on the Malahat Skywalk

Opened in 2021 and built in collaboration with the Malahat Nation, this novel Skywalk rises like a giant wood-and-glass basket above the forest just off Hwy 1, 30km (19 miles) northwest of Victoria. A 600m-long (1969ft) elevated walkway leads through arbutus forest to the 32m-high (105ft) multi-tiered tower that's been fitted with multiple viewpoints, a bouncy adventure net and a helter-skelter-style slide that’ll shoot you back down to the bottom in 15 seconds.

Looking for more great experiences? Here are our top picks on Vancouver Island

A male mountain biker is cycling on a rugged path between trees in a forest

My favorite thing to do on Vancouver Island

I’m no daredevil mountain biker, but the extensive and unique trail network around the central-island village of Cumberland is my favorite place for downhill practice (and boy do I need it). The trails were built by a local nonprofit called the  United Riders of Cumberland in the early 2000s with the cooperation of Canadian timber companies. Around the same time, an enterprising group of village residents purchased an adjacent portion of old growth forest to save it from logging and furnished it with walking trails.

To support the two-wheeled and two-legged tourists, Cumberland’s once downbeat main street of mining-era buildings has sprouted a cool array of independent shops and restaurants. Last time I was in town, I stayed at the  Riding Fool , a friendly hostel with bike rentals available at the adjacent  Dodge City Cycles .

How much money do I need for Vancouver Island?

Prices on the island mostly reflect those of mainland British Columbia (BC) and the rest of Canada. Travelers from the US, Eurozone and the UK may find things slightly cheaper than at home.

How much money you’ll need will depend on the season, your location and your choice of activities. Hit tiny Tofino in the summer for whale-watching and a dinner of baked halibut washed down with a bottle of Muscadet and things could get pricey. But visit nearby Ucluelet in the shoulder season to sample beer in the local brewpub and hike the elemental Wild Pacific Trail for free, and you’ll have some cash left in the coffers.

If you’re just visiting the Victoria area, you can stretch your budget by ditching the car (meaning no parking fees), traveling “walk-on” with the ferry and taking the cheap public bus from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal into Victoria.

Typical prices:

  • Ferry fares for cars/walk-on passengers: from C$50/19.85
  • Front-country camping per night: C$20–35
  • Backcountry camping: C$5
  • Room for two in mid-range hotel: C$180–240
  • Kayak rental (two hours): from C$50
  • Victoria – Tofino bus ticket: C$73
  • Local bus fares: C$2.50
  • Coffee: C$3–5
  • Fish ‘n’ chips: C$16–22

A whale breaches out of the sea off the coast of Vancouver Island

Are there any wild animals?

There are plenty. Zodiac boats leave direct from Victoria’s Inner Harbour on whale-watching excursions year round. Tofino and Telegraph Cove are also known for their wildlife cruises, and sightings of dolphins, otters and whales are common.  Prince of Whales is the best island operator.

Black bears are present across Vancouver Island and are regularly spotted on popular wooded hikes such as the West Coast and Juan de Fuca trails. There are no grizzly bears on the island itself, but boat trips operated by  Tide Rip run during summer from Telegraph Cove to Knight Inlet on the mainland, where grizzlies are relatively common.

Unbeknownst to many, the island has the highest concentration of cougars in North America.

What's the bike culture like?

Vancouver Island is one of the most bike-friendly places in Canada. Urban Victoria has a large and growing network of dedicated bike lanes that crisscross the downtown core and complement a wider web of multi-use trails, including the 55km (34-mile) Galloping Goose Trail and the 29km (18-mile) Lochside Trail, both of which are built on top of old railway lines. Further north, the twin surf towns of Tofino and Ucluelet are linked by the newer ʔapsčiik t̓ašii (pronounced “ups-cheek ta-shee”) trail that passes all the best Pacific beaches.

For off-road action, Cumberland has one of the most comprehensive single-track mountain biking networks in BC, with 170 named trails and a strong reputation among cyclists for its diversity and competitive edge.

How English is Victoria?

Victoria isn't as English as it used to be, but you can still enjoy several genuine British-style pubs in the BC capital, including such downtown haunts as  The Sticky Wicket (with a cricketing theme), where the menu still lists bangers and mash.

Craigdarroch Castle is a grand neo-Romanesque mansion that once belonged to a British coal baron. It wouldn’t look out of place in the Scottish Highlands.

Fish ‘n’ chips is a local staple, and authentic versions can be procured at the floating food shacks of Fisherman’s Wharf . Afternoon tea is also popular – Murchies Tea & Coffee on Government St does a cheap version.

Look out for games of cricket in Beacon Hill Park in the summer and don’t miss the world-class floral displays at  Butchart Gardens in nearby Brentwood Bay.

Two hikers are crossing a wooden bridge in a forested area along the Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island

What are the best long-distance hiking trails?

The island has three multiday backcountry hiking trails, all regarded as classics.

The West Coast Trail is world famous and was once used as a rescue route for shipwrecked sailors. It’s open from May to September, and aspiring hikers must book in advance to secure a space.

The 47km (29-mile) Juan de Fuca Trail is a lesser-known southern extension of the West Coast Trail with no prior reservations necessary.

The newer, more remote 43km (27-mile) North Coast Trail links sandy coves, empty beaches and thick, wind-contorted rainforest via a rough, unkempt path that utilizes sections of boardwalk and cable cars to cross creeks and rivers.

The all-encompassing  Vancouver Island Trail runs south to north from Victoria to Cape Scott, though it still lacks proper signage in some places. See the trail website for details.

Are there any national parks?

There are two national parks on Vancouver Island: Pacific Rim National Park Reserve , established in 1970, and Gulf Islands National Park Reserve , designated in 2003. The former abuts the stormy west coast between the twin surf towns of Tofino and Ucluelet and is split into three sections: the West Coast Trail (a hiking route), Broken Group Islands (only reachable by boat) and the more accessible Long Beach Unit, where there’s a visitor center and a raft of beach activities.

The Gulf Island National Park Reserve consists of numerous disconnected areas spread across a dozen landfalls on the so-called Gulf Island archipelago between Vancouver and Victoria. Pender and Mayne Islands are the easiest to reach on the public ferry network.

Skip The Waterfront and Get to Downtown Vancouver

Here’s how to spend a day like the locals in the couve..

tourist shop vancouver

For those who haven’t motored up Interstate 5 to Vancouver, Wash., lately, our neighbor to the north has spent $1.5 billion on developing its waterfront over the past few years. A cable-stayed pier over the Columbia River provides the focal point of an impressive collection of restaurants, condos, hotels and bars.

That fancy development is nice, but it’s more for the tourists. To get a local taste of the splendor of The Couve (from a local), spend Saturday downtown, strolling these places as you wander. Keep in mind, this list isn’t exhaustive—feel free to stray.

Brunch at Bleu Door Bakery

This French-themed space, with its sunflower-filled murals of Provence, is a local brunch favorite on weekends. Here, owner Bonnie Brasure offers her popular breakfast dishes like beignets ($8) and Benedicts ($17–$18) or shrimp and grits in a tomato, leek and bacon cream, topped with two eggs ($22). For the vegans out there, Bleu Door offers plant-based specialties like mushroom gravy and biscuits ($12), a flaky biscuit smothered in a luscious crimini, portobello and sweet onion gravy. If you’re lucky, you might catch the raspberry baked French toast on special, made with layers of croissants soaked in vanilla custard, baked and topped with whipped cream and fresh berries—a delectable dish.

Uptown Village Shopping and Vancouver Farmers Market

After brunch, take a stroll through The Couve’s Uptown Village shopping area. Start by checking out the newly opened White Oak Books, where you can browse anything from classics to poetry or manga selections. Not big on books? Head over to Bright Indirect Light Social Club, a cozy brick-and-wood-beamed shop that offers your choice of a new cacti to pull from the TV (you’ll see when you get there) or unfurling philodendron plant babies to take home.

Wherever you land on your Vancouver adventure, you must—we repeat, must —walk through the Vancouver Farmers Market (VFM), centrally located off Esther Short Park. This locally loved newly year-round market gets very busy, but vendors are still happy to hand you a sample as you weave through the crowds.

Star vendors include Silagy Sauce. Its cilantro lime serrano sauce brightens up tacos or scrambled eggs, while its fire-roasted Calabrian sauce adds an essential kick to tomato sauces. Portlanders still mourning the closure of Tiffin Asha’s brick-and-mortar location can catch owners Elizabeth Golay and Sheila Bommakanti at the market, as they’ve shifted to selling South Indian condiments. Their current offerings include a jammy red tomato ginger pickle and a piquant mustard-seed-studded green tomato pickle.

Hungry again with all this sauce talk? VFM has some stellar food stalls, like Taiwanese street food from Small Eats, Filipino favorites from Kali Kantina, and freshly griddled Mexican food made with farmers market produce from Razo’s Tacos.

Sweet Treat and Downtown Shopping

So you’ve been on the street for a couple of hours, and you’ve had your fill of savory bites. It’s time for a quick sweet stop. Head to Treat, where Stephanie McNees and Mitchell Flies serve ice cream, like their signature Ooey Gooey Butter Cake, in freshly baked waffle cones.

With your ice cream in hand, take on downtown’s growing list of boutiques (but don’t drip on the goods, OK?). Start at Wild Fern, an airy hip space where you’ll find casual chic loungewear, candles, crystals and more. Then make your way over to Ronald Records, where you can find new and used vinyl, some CDs if you’ve still got your boombox, and some unique Couve merch, with the slogan “The Couvee. It Ain’t Portland,” as a souvenir.

If you’re looking for a few more souvenirs from the day (maybe a vintage piece), pop into Most Everything or the newly opened Eras. Both these shops are stacked with treasures ranging from costume pearls to vintage luggage and other decades-old finds.

Dinner, Film and a Nightcap

Evening already? The adventure isn’t over. First, it’s time for dinner, and the go-to restaurant is Elements.

Chef and owner Miguel Sosa sources everything locally, with seasonally shifting dishes like a cocoa and chile rub beef tenderloin bathed in a red wine reduction with onion and mushroom marmalade ($40) and vegan creations like tamarind and miso roasted celery root layered with tomatillos, cauliflower mousseline and radish ($16). The locals often say that if Sosa had opened his restaurant across the river, he would’ve been nominated for a James Beard Award by now. His dishes are exquisitely prepared and plated, and the warmth of the space feels intimate without a hint of pretension.

Not quite ready to eat? Head over to Kiggins Theatre, the nearly 90-year-old single-screen destination with its original silver chandeliers still intact, dangling from the hand-painted ceiling by R.B. Robert (who also worked on a multiyear painting project at Windsor Castle). Here you can catch classic films like Singin’ in the Rain and Spaceballs , and live local comedy events. Pick up a MoonPie from the concessions stand and settle in.

If you’re skipping the theater but looking for an extra treat, grab a nightcap from The Grocery Cocktail & Social, where you can get a Captain’s Smoked Old Fashioned (on the expensive side at $25) or a lighter High Honey ($17) made with honeydew juice and Adrift gin. There’s food, too, if you’re interested.

Overnight Stay

Have you fallen in love with The Couve? It happens. You’ve got options on hotels: Hilton Vancouver or the new AC Hotel Vancouver Waterfront (it has its moments!) with its sleek modern rooms. Stay at one, and then wake up and start your Couve adventure again.
