Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

You must have a valid U.S. passport and a visa or an approved Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to enter Australia. Most U.S. passport holders traveling to Australia for tourism or business purposes for less than 90 days can obtain an ETA. The ETA is an electronic label-free visa and can be obtained at the ETA website for a small service fee. Airlines and many travel agents in the United States are also able to apply for ETAs on behalf of travelers.

If you overstay your ETA or any other visa, even for short periods, you may be subject to exclusion, detention, and removal by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

If you are travelling on a valid U.S. ePassport (a passport that contains an electronic chip) and are 16 years of age or older, you are eligible to use Australia’s automated border processing system, SmartGate, upon arrival in Australia (SmartGate kiosks are available only at participating airports). There is no additional enrollment process or fee to use SmartGate. Visit the SmartGate website for more information and for a list of participating airports in Australia.

Visit the Embassy of Australia website for the most current visa information.

HIV/AIDS restrictions. Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors and foreigners seeking permanent residence in Australia. Depending on the type of visa you apply for, the length of your stay, and your intended activities in Australia, you may be required to undergo a medical examination before the Australian Department of Home Affairs will issue you a visa.

If you are in the application process, and are found to be HIV positive, a decision on the application will be considered on the same grounds as any other pre-existing medical condition (such as tuberculosis or cancer), with the focus on the cost to Australia’s health care and community services.

Additional information about Australian immigration health requirements can be found here.

Please verify this information with the Embassy of Australia in Washington D.C. before you travel.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorists have targeted, and could continue to target, Australia.

  • Australia has an alert system for possible terrorist attacks. The threat levels range from “not expected” to “certain.” The Australian National Security website has up-to-date information regarding the current terrorism threat level. You may also contact the Australian National Security Hotline at 61-1-800-123-400.
  • U.S. citizens in Australia should remain vigilant toward their personal security and exercise caution.
  • Australian law protects the right of individuals and groups to engage in peaceful protest and to publicly express their views. Demonstrations and political rallies are generally approved by local authorities and well publicized. However, please be cautious of any possible confrontation that could escalate into violence. You should attempt to avoid the areas of demonstrations and be careful within the vicinity of any demonstrations. You should stay current with media coverage of local events and always be aware of your surroundings.
  • You should be aware that robberies, burglaries, assault, and auto theft are common in Australia’s larger cities.
  • Foreign visitors in popular tourist areas are targets for pickpockets, purse-snatchers, and petty thieves. Most petty crime can be avoided if basic security precautions are taken.
  • Be careful when visiting bars or clubs in the entertainment areas of major cities, as “bar brawls” and other assaults sometimes occur. You should watch out for drink spiking when consuming alcohol with unfamiliar people.

See the Department of State and the FBI pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime:

  • Report crimes to the local police at 000 and contact the U.S. Consulate in your district.
  • The local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.
  • See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
  • Help you find appropriate medical care.
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms.
  • Provide a list of local attorneys.
  • Provide information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide information about Australian Victim Assistance programs.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home.
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the U.S. consulate in your district for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated, and rules and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage, and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, imprisoned or deported.

  • It is illegal to take pictures of certain buildings, such as inside certain areas of Australian airports, near prisons, and at military bases.
  • Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Alcohol and Drugs:

  • Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking of drugs are strict. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy sentences and fines. Please see Australia’s Department of Health webpage for further information.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol can result in jail time.
  • Random breath testing of a driver's blood alcohol level is a common occurrence.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Potential Health Screening: Australian authorities have broad powers to prevent the entry of diseases and other materials into Australia that might pose a threat to its welfare. In the event of a public health emergency involving a communicable disease, passengers arriving in Australia may be subject to strict health screening measures, including testing, monitoring, and assessment for possible quarantine.

Customs: Australian customs authorities enforce very strict regulations concerning the importation from all countries of items such as agricultural goods, including plants and food products, and wood products, as well as very strict quarantine standards for animals and pets. Can you bring it in?

Contact the Embassy of Australia in Washington, D.C., or one of Australia's consulates in the United States for specific information regarding customs requirements, and visit the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture website for additional information.

Natural Disasters:

Australia experiences a range of natural disasters, including bushfires, floods, and severe storms. These events are difficult to predict and can result in loss of life. You should be aware of conditions around you and monitor local weather and safety reports so you can take appropriate action when needed.

See our webpage for information on storm preparedness and response.

Safety Concerns:

Outdoor Recreation/Adventure

  • Be aware that Australian fauna can be dangerous. From jellyfish to crocodiles, sharks, poisonous insects, and snakes, the continent and its waters host wildlife that merit awe and respect in equal doses.
  • Visit the Wet Tropics Management Authority visitor information guide for information on Australian wildlife and marine life.
  • Take important safety precautions when swimming, such as swimming only between the flags where a lifeguard is present, and never swimming alone.
  • Further information on beach safety can be found on the Surf Life Saving website.

  • Many of the downtown areas of Australian cities were built in the 1800s. These areas often have narrow sidewalks crowded with pedestrians and tourists.
  • Most public transit, parking, streets, and buildings are accessible for disabled travelers.
  • Tourist spots at the beach or in the Australian outback can have varying degrees of accessibility.
  • Many accommodations and venues provide accessibility information on their websites.

  • Serious medical problems requiring hospitalization and/or medical evacuation to the United States can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on overseas insurance coverage. Air Quality

Air pollution is a significant problem during certain months in Australia due to bush fires. Consider the impact seasonal bush fire season pollution may have on your health and consult your doctor before traveling.

The air quality varies considerably and changes with the season. It is typically at its worst in the bush fire season. People at the greatest risk from particle pollution exposure include:

  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema;
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

  • Traffic operates on the left side of the road, and all vehicles use right-hand drive.
  • Use caution when crossing streets and when driving.
  • When crossing roads on foot, make sure you look carefully in all directions.
  • Seat belt use by drivers and all passengers is mandatory, and fines apply for not wearing them.
  • Motorcyclists must wear helmets.
  • Speed limits and laws are rigorously enforced. Speed limits vary throughout Australia and are measured in kilometers, not miles. Be aware that speed cameras are everywhere and you will be ticketed for driving over the speed limit.
  • Roads and streets are frequently narrower and less graded than U.S. highways.
  • Outside major metropolitan areas, most highways are two-lane roads with significant distances between destinations.
  • When driving in Australia, exercise caution while passing or merging with adjacent traffic.
  • If driving in rural areas, be alert to free-roaming animals, such as kangaroos, and "road-trains" (several semi-truck trailers connected together).
  • Passing road-trains is dangerous, and you should pull over to allow on-coming road-trains to pass to avoid being sideswiped.
  • If you have no experience with a 4-wheel drive vehicle, you should exercise common-sense when driving in the Australian outback.

Traffic Laws:

  • Each state/territory has different rules about using a foreign driver’s license and the conditions under which a visitor might have to get an international driver’s license. More information about  driving rules and regulations is available by state .
  • Texting or holding your phone while driving is against the law in Australia, but you can use a hands-free system to communicate while driving.
  • For specific information concerning Australian driving permits, vehicle inspection, road tax, mandatory insurance, and the rental and operation of motor vehicles in Australia, visit the  Australian Tourist Commission website.

Public Transportation:  Australia has an extensive and safe public transportation network consisting of buses, streetcars, ferries, trains, and subways. Metered taxis and ride sharing services are also prevalent. Use common sense safety practices, such as guarding valuables and remaining aware of your surroundings, on all public transportation.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Australia’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Australia’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Australia should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings website  portal select “broadcast warnings”.

Australia ETA (Electronic Travel Authority): Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia does not offer visa exemption to any nationality. Australia ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) is the closest thing to visa exemption.

The ETA has subclass 601 in Australia’s visa documentation. It’s also referred to as the Australia ETA visa or Australia Visa 601.

Even though ETA is synonymous with visa exemption, ETA is technically a visa that you must obtain before traveling. ETA can only be applied through the Australian ETA app.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: 33 nationalities are eligible
  • ETA validity: ETA is valid for 1 year, unlimited entries for up to 90 days each time
  • ETA fee: ETA is free of cost, but 20 AUD is payable for using the App
  • Processing time: In most cases, the ETA is granted immediately.

If you haven’t already, read the Australia Visa Guide to familiarize yourself with Australian visa requirements, available visa options and entry procedure at the border.

Table of Contents

Understanding australia eta.

Australia ETA Sample

ETA validity

The ETA is valid for 1 year from the date of issue.

ETA is electronically linked to your passport. If your passport expires, your ETA also expires or becomes invalid. In such a case, you would need to apply for a new ETA using the new passport.

Duration of stay

With an ETA, you can stay up to 90 days each time you enter Australia. There is no maximum time you can spend in Australia per year. There is also no minimum time outside of the country before you can enter Australia again.

If you make frequent visits to Australia, you may be asked about your reasons for traveling and have to prove that you are a genuine visitor.

Allowed number of entries

Australia ETA is a multiple-entry visa. You can enter Australia as many times as you want while the ETA is still valid.

When to apply

Most ETA applications are approved immediately. It may take longer if you make a mistake or if more documents are requested. Since the ETA is valid for 1 year, it’s smart to apply well in advance of your travels.

ETA extension

Extensions to the ETA are not allowed . You are allowed to apply for a different visa to extend your stay in Australia .

Australia ETA Requirements

Australia ETA Eligible Countries

ETA eligibility

Only the following 33 passport holders are eligible for the Australian ETA:

  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom (Citizens and Overseas Nationals)
  • United States of America
  • Vatican City

NOTE If you have a criminal conviction from any country, you are not eligible for the ETA and must apply for a regular Visitor Visa instead.

Documents required

The following documents are required to apply for Australian ETA.

  • A valid passport
  • A credit or debit card for service fee

Passport requirement

Your passport must be valid during your stay in Australia. Unlike other countries, there is no 6-month passport validity requirement for Australia.

Supporting documents

In some cases, you may asked to provide some or all of the following documents.

  • Reason for your visit, including intended place of stay and activities
  • List of immediate family members and their details
  • List of family, friends or contacts in Australia and their details
  • Bank statements
  • Evidence of your employment and commitments in your country

Australian ETA app

Australian ETA can only be applied using the mobile app. ETA cannot be applied online. You must have a smartphone or have to take the help of someone who has one.

If you do not have a smartphone or cannot get help from someone, your only other option is to apply for another type of Australian visa. Below are alternative options to ETA.

  • European passport holders can apply for an Australia eVisitor Visa
  • Non-European passport holders can apply for an Australian Visitor Visa

You can download the Australian ETA app from the following locations.

  • Android Phones: Google Play store
  • Apple iPhones: Apple App Store

The smartphone must have the following capabilities to use the Australia ETA App.

  • Camera: The phone must have a camera to take a photo of your passport. It must also have a front-facing camera to take a photo of yourself.
  • NFC enabled: The phone must have NFC (Near Field Communication) capability and enabled
  • GPS enabled: The phone must have GPS capability and location services enabled

Instead of a smartphone, you can also use a mobile device such as a tablet. But the tablet must have NFC enabled.

The ETA application itself is free of cost. There is a 20 AUD service fee to use the Australian ETA App.

The ETA App is developed by SITA and Arq Group in collaboration with the Australian Department of Home Affairs. So the service fee is charged by these third parties that built it to maintain and process your data.

Processing time

In most cases, ETA is approved immediately. In some cases, it can take up to 48 hours.

The ETA processing may take longer in the following situations.

  • You made a mistake while filling out the ETA application
  • The home affairs could not verify the submitted information
  • The home affairs requests for further information or documentation

ETA Application Process

Australia ETA App on Apple App Store

How to apply

Australian ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) can only be applied using the Australian ETA App. So the first step is to download the app on your smartphone.

After you open the app, go through the following steps.

  • Scan your passport to pre-fill your personal and passport details
  • Take a live photo of yourself (selfie)
  • Answer a few basic questions
  • Pay for the service fee
  • Submit your ETA application

The Australian Government has made a nice step-by-step ETA app guide to help apply for your ETA.

Individual application

If you are the only applicant, the process is straightforward. You go through all the steps, pay the fee and submit the application.

Family application

Each family member must submit an individual ETA application. Family members can use individual smartphones or one smartphone for all.

If all family members are applying on the same smartphone, then the service fee for all of them can be paid together in the app.

How to track status

After you submit your ETA application, you will receive an email from the Australian Government informing you of the outcome of your application. This is usually within seconds after you apply.

If your ETA visa application is taking longer to process, you can check the status on the ETA App or Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) portal.

If your ETA visa application is approved, you will receive a Grant Notification email with your ETA attached.

Requires further information

If your ETA visa application requires further information, you will receive an email with a link to an online form. You must fill out the online form and attach any supporting documents requested. The result of your ETA application will be sent to your email.

If your ETA visa application is refused, you can apply for ETA again. But the outcome will likely be the same. In such a case, you will have to apply for another type of visa such as eVisitor or Visitor visa.

How to download approved ETA

You do not need to download or print your approved ETA. The ETA is electronically connected to your passport.

Airlines that operate to/from Australia have access to the Advance Passenger Processing (APP) portal. The airline check-in staff can verify if you hold a valid visa or ETA by scanning your passport. Therefore, the airline staff may not ask for your ETA print.

For some reason, if the airline staff at check-in asks for your ETA proof, you can just show the ETA approval email or the ETA pdf on your phone.

Customer service

If you need any help with your ETA application, you can use the “Contact us” form in the App.

Procedure at the border

Countries eligible for the ETA are considered the lowest immigration risk by Australia. As such, going through the border with an ETA is usually quick and easy.

Since the ETA is digitally attached to your passport, you don’t need to print or show the ETA. If eligible, you can use the Smart Gate system which will allow you even faster arrival and departure.

You must fill out the Incoming Passenger Card on arrival. Incoming Passenger Card is mandatory for all visitors including Australian citizens.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is an australian eta the same as a visa.

The Australian ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) is a visa for all intents and purposes. The only difference is that the ETA is much easier to obtain than a regular Visitor Visa.

What is the difference between ETA and an eVisitor visa?

The difference between ETA and an eVisitor visa is that ETA is for select countries around the world, whereas the eVisitor visa is for European countries. Another difference is that the ETA costs 20 AUD because of the use of the ETA App, whereas the eVisitor visa is free of charge.

Other than the above, the ETA and the eVisitor visa for Australia have no differences in specifications: both are valid for 1 year for unlimited entries of up to 90 days each.

Some countries are eligible for both. It’s up to you which one you apply for.

Can I get an Australian ETA at the airport?

No, you cannot get an Australian ETA at the border. You must obtain it outside of Australia, before traveling. You must have a valid passport, a smartphone and a credit or debit card to apply for ETA.

How to Use the Australian ETA App for U.S. Citizens

Australia Visas and Immigration have moved the Australian ETA’s application platform from online to a mobile app, known as the Australian ETA App . ETA stands for Electronic Travel Authority , which allows U.S. citizens to enter Australia for tourism for up to thirty (30) days.

The previous online platform of Australia ETA was much easier to use and apply. The Australian ETA app is somewhat confusing and can be time-consuming if it’s your first time using and applying for an ETA. The technology is so advanced that I think it can be overwhelming to use and comprehend the instructions. That’s why I am sharing my experience and the steps that I took to successfully apply for an Australia ETA in the hope that you can benefit from this guide.

How to Use the Australian ETA App for U.S. Citizens

Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Australian ETA App for U.S. Passports

Carefully follow the steps below, and please note this guide is for U.S. passports only.

  • Apple Store (Apple)
  • Google Play Store (Android)
  • Launch the app and follow the interface to start.
  • Tap on the New ETA to start creating your profile and submit an ETA application.
  • Read the conditions and scroll down until the Agree button becomes enabled for you to tap to continue.
  • Read and tap on the blue Start button. This is when things can get tricky, so follow the steps below carefully and make sure you are in a bright environment .
  • Open your U.S. passport’s last page, where your personal information data is.
  • One hand holds the top of the passport page.
  • The other hand holds the phone and ensures the red box scan is inside the bottom personal data page. See the image below.

  • Next, use one hand to lay down the same passport’s last page, top and bottom, flat on a surface.
  • Use your other hand to place the phone vertically in the middle of the top and bottom pages.
  • Now, move your phone up to the top. See the image below.

  • After that, tap on Read Passport Chip .
  • Start moving the phone down slowly until you see the yellow progress bar loading . At that point, hold your phone still until your passport information data is loaded.
  • Verify your passport information and click Confirm to continue.
  • After that, tap on the Take Photo button. That’s another area that can be tricky with the technology. Try following the mini instructions on the screen to move your camera to take your photo successfully.
  • More reading, and then keep taping on Next to continue.
  • Answer some personal details, then follow the subsequent screens.
  • The ETA app will also ask you for your email address. Ensure you enter correctly because it will send you a code via email to verify before you can proceed.
  • After that, confirm your personal information and save it.
  • There are six (6) steps to apply for the ETA, so read each question carefully at each step. I heard that some people answer the question by mistake, and that can terribly delay the ETA application.
  • Finally, pay for the ETA application. The cost is in Australian dollars, so make sure to use a card that does not charge you a foreign transaction fee .
  • If you do not have any background matters and your submission has no issues, you will receive the approval ETA immediately via email. There’s a PDF attachment in the email showing your granted ETA, its validity, and conditions.
  • Enjoy the Down Under !

Frequently Asked Questions

Besides the steps to use the Australian ETA app, you may have more questions about the ETA in general. I’ll try to answer some common ones below.

Do U.S. Citizens need a visa for Australia?

If you are visiting Australia under thirty (30) days, you only need to apply for the Australian ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) using the app, as described in this post.

How much does an Australian ETA cost?

It’s 20 Australian Dollars, roughly around $13. Be sure to use a card that has no foreign currency conversion fees .

Can I apply for an Australian ETA online?

No, the Australian Visas and Immigration has moved the Australian ETA application from online to the mobile app platform. So, you must download the app and apply. See the step-by-step instructions in this post.

How long does it take to get an Australian ETA for U.S. Citizens?

You must use the Australian ETA app to set up the profile and apply for the ETA all through the app platform. Depending on how quickly you can submit your ETA application on the app, you will receive your Australian ETA immediately via email if you do not have any background problems and your application does not have any issues that require a manual review.

When should I apply for the Australian ETA?

While the Australian ETA is processed and granted instantly after you apply, it’s best not to wait until the last minute to do so. You cannot board the plane unless you have an approved ETA, which ties to your passport when the agent scans it at the airport for check-in. In other words, try to remember to apply for it 1 or 2 months before your trip, just in case. I heard stories from people that if the ETA is not instantly approved, the delay can be pretty long. A granted ETA is valid for one year from the approval date.

How long is an Australian ETA valid for?

One year from the ETA granted date.

Does an Australian ETA have multiple entries?

Yes. Each entry allows you to stay up to thirty (30) days until the ETA expires.

How to Get an Electronic Travel Authority Visa

So you've decided to take a trip down under to Australia or New Zealand. But not so fast—you can't just pack your passport and hop on a plane to the land down under. All visitors to New Zealand from visa-waiver countries and all visitors to Australia require an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) —an electronic visa—except for citizens of Australia and New Zealand.

ETA in Australia

The Australian visa, which is electronically stored, comes in three types:

  • Valid 12 months for multiple stays of three months maximum each visit.
  • Valid for up to three months on each visit within a 12-month period.
  • Valid for up to three months per visit for the life of the passport.

The ETA is allowed for citizens of the following 32 countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom , United States, and Vatican City.

Travelers must hold a passport from one of the following countries or regions in order to apply for an ETA online:

  • Brunei - Darussalam
  • South Korea
  • United States

Travelers who don't hold a passport from any of the above countries can't apply for an ETA online. Instead, you may apply through a travel agent, airline or an Australian visa office.

After Receiving an ETA

Once a traveler receives an ETA, they can enter Australia as many times as they want during a 12 month period from the date the ETA is granted or until their passport expires, whichever comes first. The ETA allows visitors to stay in Australia for a maximum of three months on each visit. Visitors can't work while in Australia, but they can participate in business visitor activities including contractual negotiations, and attending conferences.

Travelers can't study for more than three months, must be free from tuberculosis and must not have any criminal convictions for which you have been sentenced for a total combined period of 12 months or more, whether or not the sentence/s were served.

To apply for an ETA online, you must be outside Australia and intend to visit for tourism or business visitor activities. You must have your passport, email address and a credit card to complete the online application. The cost is AUD$20 (around US$17) for a visitor or business-short visa, while the business-long visa is about $80-$100, and you can pay with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diner's Club and JCB.

Travelers can see a complete list of Australian visa offices and ETA contact information at the  Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)  website. U.S. citizens who are having trouble getting an ETA can contact the Australian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

NZeTA in New Zealand

All visitors to New Zealand either need a visa, or a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before boarding the plane. NZeTAs are stored electronically and are valid for many visits for up to 2 years. Visitors to New Zealand who are not from a visa waiver country or territory, but who are visiting for up to 3 months (up to six months for British citizens) must also request a NZeTA.

Processing for a NZeTA can take as little as 10 minutes or up to 72 hours and it must be processed before you travel. The request costs NZD$9 on the free app or NZD$12 if completed online. You will also have to pay and International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) at the same time which costs NZD$35.

The NZeTA is required for travelers from the following countries: Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macao, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, Uruguay, and Vatican City.

ETA Visa to Australia from US

Key aspects.

Cheapest and fastest visa to obtain.

Visa Duration

12 months total, up to 90 days each visit .

Approval time

95% of visas granted within 24 hours .

If you are an US citizen who is planning to come to Australia for a non-employment purpose for a temporary time period, Australia’s e-visitor visa is most likely the best way for you to gain entry into the country .

As a matter of fact, you can apply for an ETA visa independently on the reason for your travel (holiday or on business) and quickly obtain the visa for a low cost .

Your ETA visa will then be valid for 12 months , during which you can travel to Australia freely, staying in Australia for up to 90 days in each visit . As a matter of fact, ETA visas are multiple entry visas, valid for one year from the date of issue.

Applying for an ETA “e-visa” to Australia is easy, and you can get your visa very quickly: you will often get your visa within one day .

What is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)?

The Electronic Travel Authority (or ETA) is the name given to the most commonly used Australian Tourist and Business Visa , which allows you to stay in Australia for up to 3 months each time you enter Australia, within 12 months from the date the visa was granted. ETA is therefore a multiple entry kind of Visa.

  • The Australian ETA differs from traditional visas in that there are no paper application forms to fill in and no visa label or stamp in the passport: everything happens online.
  • The ETA is released by the Australian Government to passport holders form a list of specified countries and regions, among whom are the USA .
  • To apply for an ETA (Visitor) visa, you must be outside Australia at the moment of applying and hold a passport issued by an ETA-eligible country or region (among whom are the USA – so a US passport will allow you to apply for an Australian ETA ).
  • You must apply for your ETA with the passport and passport number you will be travelling to Australia with, as the ETA visa will be linked to this number. If your passport is lost/stolen or replaced before you travel to Australia, you will therefore be required to re-apply for an ETA visa.

What are the conditions of the ETA?

Visitors to Australia must be willing and able to abide by the visa validity and conditions while in Australia . If you do not abide by these conditions, your visa may be cancelled or you may be subject to other penalties. These conditions essentially are:

  • You must not work whilst in Australia. Limited volunteer work may be acceptable;
  • You must not engage in any studies or training for more than three months ;
  • You must be free from tuberculosis at the time of your travel to Australia;
  • The holder must depart within the validity of the Visitor Visa (ETA);
  • If applying for an ETA with criminal convictions , you could be refused entry into Australia.

Australian ETA Types

Australian eta subclasses and visa streams, australian eta-eligible countries, getting an eta for australia from the usa, australian eta requirements for us citizens, australian eta application process, australian eta approval time, australian eta validity, australian eta price, australian eta: what it is and how it differs from a travel visa.

Many Americans planning their first trip to Australia may be confused by the visa regulations put in place by the immigration department of the Australian government , and most of them end up wondering “ what is an ETA visa for Australia, and how it differs from a visa? “. If you are among them you are in the right place: keep reading to find all there is to know about the E lectronic Travel Authority (ETA) for Australia .

First of all, an Australian ETA is an electronic record of your authorization to visit Australia – essentially a travel visa. The main difference is that when you apply for an Electronic Travel Authority visa, you eliminate the need for a stamp on your passport or a printed visa.

Using the government ETA, you essentially have a visitor visa for Australia without the need of a traditional paper visa to enter the country. If you are wondering about an ETA vs visa, they are basically the same . An ETA is a visa, and it allows you to enter Australia as a tourist or as a business visitor. However, it is an electronic record housed in a database that is “virtually attached” to your passport: you do not need and ETA card for Australia, everything is done online as is digitally registered.

As an American visitor, Australia requires a travel visa if you plan to visit the country for tourism or business purposes, and ETA is the most used form of such authorization. Essentially, in most cases you cannot travel from USA to Australia without an ETA.

The electronic travel authority ETA for Australia is for travel to the country for short durations. Also known as a short stay visa or electronic travel authorization services, ETA is the fastest and easiest to obtain Australian visa for US citizens . Watch out though: an easy ETA is only for U.S. citizens and citizens of countries with visa-exempt agreements with Australia: as of 2024, the online ETA countries are Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea.

You can apply for an ETA visa online using our official application form : our agency will look at your enquiry as soon you apply online to verify it is 100% compliant with government requirements and the ETA issuing authority will then be the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

If you need more ETA support or help with your application, please feel free to send us a message in your preferred language via our contact information form. If any problem arises while filling in your application, you can also save your application or check the status of your application at any time.

Australia implemented the Electronic Travel Authority system in 1996, and in 2001 the country began taking applications from residents of countries who needed a travel visa to visit Australia for vacation or business purposes.

From that moment, ETAs largely replaced traditional paper visas, as ETA-eligible countries no longer needed paper tourist visas , and the only difference between ETAs and tourist visas is that the electronic visas to enter Australia are digitally linked to passports. The most common Electronic Travel Authority authorization is the tourist ETA visa subclass 601 . When you enter Australia with a tourist visa 601, you can stay for up to three months during one year. You can use the visa to visit friends or family, take a vacation or enter Australia as a business visitor. You can stay or leave as many times as you wish during the 12-month period. If you wish to stay longer, you must instead apply for another kind of visa.

Also as a business visitor, with this visitor ETA you can attend meetings, conferences, review business contracts and take part in seminars .

However, you cannot work using this visa or study for more than three months using a tourist ETA . This visa also does not allow you to sell any services or offer any goods to the public.

A visa stream is a category of visas that allow you to participate in certain activities as a visitor to Australia . For example, there are tourist streams for Americans who want to visit Australia, and there are frequent traveler streams for people who need to travel to the country often. Instead, a business visitor stream allows you to enter Australia for business reasons. Each stream has subclasses of Visas. In this context, an ETA falls under the tourist stream category and is known as a subclass 601 visa. Your country of origin often determines what type of visa you need to enter Australia. For example, a subclass 601 visa is the ETA visa for countries with visa-waiver programs with Australia. As an example, a US visitor can also apply for a subclass 600 visa. The difference between a subclass 600 (Visitor) vs 601 (ETA) visa is a 600 lets you stay for up to three, six, nine or 12 months . The subclass 600 has different travel streams for different travel reasons. The streams include the sponsored family visa, the frequent traveler visa, the tourist visa and the business traveler visa. Even if you are from a country other than the US you may apply for a subclass 600 visa under a specific stream. A UD/601 ETA is for U.S. citizens.

As of 2024, there are eight online visa ETA-eligible countries . The list of countries includes:

  • South Korea
  • United States of America

European travelers can instead apply for a visa online using Australia’s eVisitor system . The eVisitor system helps simplify the application process for travelers from European Union countries: it is a visa that lets you stay in Australia for up to three months, and it is good for one year. Instead of applying using a travel agent or government entity, also as a EU citizen you can apply online using your passport. In many cases, if you have entered all your information accurately and truthfully you will receive an instantaneous approval. Essentially, we could say that eVisitor is the equivalent of ETA for European citizens.

Australia requires residents from some countries to apply for a visa using traditional methods. So if you are not from an eVisitor- or ETA-eligible country, you may need to apply with the Australian embassy or consulate. Approval times can in this case range from 18-24 days depending on where you are from and the purpose of your visit.

So, “do U.S. citizens need an ETA for Australia?” the answer is YES. Australia requires all visitors from the U.S. to have a valid passport and visa to enter the country .

The ETA requirements for U.S. citizens are very straight forward, and as an American citizen with a valid passport and ETA, you will be allowed to visit Australia as many times as you want during a 12-month period for three months at a time.

However, you cannot have a criminal record where a conviction resulted in incarceration for more than 12 months and you must be free from tuberculosis . If you are at least 11 years of age and you intend to study in a class-room environment for a period greater than 4 weeks, you may also be required to pass a chest x-ray examination before commencing your studies.

As previously mentioned, you cannot work while visiting Australia using an ETA – in such case you must instead apply for an Australian Work Visa .

You also study or train for more than three months – in such case you must instead apply for an Australian Student Visa .

If you want to get an Australia visa online from the USA (ETA), you can apply directly here using our simple application form . Within a matter of one day or less, you will receive an answer to your ETA application. Many Americans who have used an ETA consider it the best and cheapest choice when traveling from the U.S. to Australia . However, make sure all your information is correct. Entering incorrect information could delay the approval process, and you may be required to provide additional documentation or other information.

If you do not feel that an ETA Travel Visa fits your needs, aside from the Electronic Travel Authority visa other visitor visas are available for U.S. citizens traveling to Australia .

Here is a list of alternative visas currently available online for America citizens that allow you to stay in Australia temporarily:

  • Transit visa (subclass 771)
  • Visitor Visa (subclass 600)
  • Work and holiday visa (subclass 462)
  • Long Stay Visa
  • Student Visa
  • Maritime Crew Visa
  • Temporary Work Visa

As a U.S. citizen, Australia has ETA requirements that you must meet before you can enter the country .

First off, you and your party must have eligible passports . Also, we recommend that from the day you enter Australia, your U.S. passport is valid for a minimum of six months: Australian Government does not strictly require this to release an ETA to US citizens, but many travel airlines will require a 6 months passport validity to allow US passengers travelling to Australia . If it does not meet these conditions, you will need a new ETA and new passport.

Australia also has health requirements for U.S. citizens . You must be free from tuberculosis at the time of travel to, and entry into, Australia. Also, in some cases you or your family may need a health examination before you can enter Australia. However, if you had an examination in the last 12 months, you may not be required to take another medical assessment. Finally, US citizens older than 11 years of age intending to study in class-room environments for 4 weeks or more may be required to pass a chest x-ray examination before commencing their studies.

Australia also has character requirements . For example, you may be denied entry in Australia if you have an extensive criminal record . When you apply, answer every question regarding any criminal history truthfully: Australian Government will considers all the circumstances surrounding your conviction. So, if you are truthful about a criminal record, the minister for home affairs may decide to grant your visa application.

Also, if as US citizen you owe the Australian government any money, you must pay back the debt before you are allowed entry . You can, in some circumstances, make an arrangement to pay back the money. Finally, if you are traveling with children, your reason to travel to Australia must also be in the child’s best interest.

The long and drawn-out process of applying for a visa to travel to Australia is long gone. Today, it is easier than ever to apply online for an authorization to enter Australia if you live in a country with a visa-waiver agreement such as the US.

The process is simple:

  • First, you enter your email address .
  • Then, you will need to select your location as the United States since you are applying outside of Australia .
  • You then enter all your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport ( make sure you have your passport ready when you apply).
  • Next, you will fill out any details regarding criminal history, if any .
  • You finally submit all of your information and pay via Paypal or Credit Card (any valid Visa or MasterCard).

After you apply for your Australian ETA, you will receive a notification that your application and documents were received. From there, you will receive a written notification letting you know if your ETA was granted, or if you need to complete additional steps. When you receive any information such as a reference number, receipt or approval, you should print out a copy for your records.

However, there is no requirement that you print out any ETA document or information . A printable sample of your ETA will be sent to you by mail, and a non-official example is also available on our website for your knowledge, but there is no need to take the printouts with you on your trip to Australia. When you will arrive in Australia, you will also need to fill out an incoming passenger card . All visa holders, including American ETA holders, must fill out the card. The card acts as an affirmation that you meet the health and character requirements as a tourist in Australia.

Once you enter Australia, you can then travel anywhere in Australia as long as you do not exceed the stay period . Also keep in mind that if your US passport expires while you are in Australia, then also your Australian ETA expires . You will then need to complete the entire process over again, including obtaining a new passport.

If your ETA expires while you are in the country, Australian officials may detain you and force you to return to the United States . Therefore, it is imperative that you notify Australian immigration officials immediately if there are any changes to your status.

IMPORTANT: As an American citizen, you cannot obtain an ETA on arrival when you visit Australia, you need to apply online before leaving the US.

The ETA visa processing time for Australia often happens instantaneously . Many U.S. citizens use an ETA as an urgent visa since the process is so fast. In most cases, you will receive a notification in less than one day. However, several factors determine how long the processing time takes. Here are some factors that affect processing times.

  • Providing all necessary supporting documentation
  • Responding to requests for additional information
  • Checking on information you have provided
  • Health, character and national security checks
  • Passport eligibility

It is recommended that you do not arrange travel to Australia until you receive an ETA approval. We recommend that you apply for an ETA visa at least two weeks before the date you want to start traveling.

The Australia ETA visa validity period is one year, and it allows unlimited entries, for three months at a time maximum . In other words, you can leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you want – as long as each stay lasts no longer than three months. An ETA gives you multiple entries into Australia. However, this is a temporary visa that is valid for 12 months . Also, if the expiry date on your passport is shorter than the ETA expiry date, your visa is no longer valid. In that case, you will need a new passport that covers a sufficient length of time for the duration of your stay, and you will need an ETA renewal.

Many people who travel to Australia wonder about the ETA visa cost . Fortunately, a short-term visa is not expensive. When applying online via our website, the TOTAL cost of an ETA for Americans visiting Australia is $ 69.00 . This total ETA visa cost for a subclass 601 ETA is the result of processing fees, and there is no tax charge for the actual visa, which is why and an online ETA is considered a cheap Australia ETA.

As an example, online Long-Term visas and Work and Holiday visas cost more: you can typically expect to pay more than $350 U.S for each Long-Term visa and more than $500 US for a Work and Holiday visa.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Australia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Australia’s High Commission in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

You do not need a pre-departure COVID-19 test to enter or transit Australia regardless of your COVID-19 vaccination status. See the Australian government’s website for advice on COVID-19 and travelling.

COVID-19 quarantine requirements

Each state and territory determines its own quarantine rules. You should check requirements for specific states and territories .

Passport validity requirements

For entry into Australia, your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. If you’re transiting another country on your way to or from Australia, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Visa requirements

British citizens can usually get the following types of electronic visitor visa:

  • eVisitor visa . There is no visa application charge or service fee
  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via the iOS App or Android App . There is no visa application charge, but a service fee of A$20 may apply

Information on all other types of visa is available from the Department of Home Affairs .

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Australia guide .

Australia has strict quarantine rules to keep out pests and diseases that could affect plant, animal or human health.

You must fill out an Incoming Passenger Card and either:

  • declare any risk goods including food, animal products and plant material (including wooden articles)
  • dispose of any risk goods in the bins at the airport or sea port

All luggage is x-rayed on arrival. Any items of concern are further inspected, treated and if necessary confiscated and destroyed. You can be heavily fined for breaches of quarantine regulations.

Last updated: April 10, 2024 05:31 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, australia - take normal security precautions.

Take normal security precautions in Australia.

Violent crime is low.

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and bag snatching, occurs mostly in larger cities. Vehicle break-ins are common.

Robberies of safe-deposit facilities are common at inexpensive hotels and hostels.

  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
  • Never leave personal belongings, such as money, credit cards, cell phones and other electronics, unattended
  • Exercise caution in popular tourist areas

Online scam

Scammers have duped tourists into transferring money to an overseas bank account in exchange for renting accommodation in Australia.

When renting accommodation, beware of online scams.

Overseas fraud

Demonstrations

Demonstrations may occur. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

More about mass gatherings (large-scale events)

There is a threat of terrorism. The Government of Australia maintains a national terrorism threat advisory system. Individuals or groups have developed both the intent and capability to conduct a terrorist attack in Australia. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time.

Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Australian National Security – Government of Australia

Spiked food and drinks

Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances, as they may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

Water activities

Coastal waters can be dangerous. Riptides are common and can be dangerous. Several drownings occur each year.

In certain areas, sharks, crocodiles, jellyfish and other wildlife pose a risk to swimmers.

  • Avoid unsupervised beaches
  • Follow the instructions and warnings of lifeguards
  • Respect the flag warning system, which provides notice of water conditions and safety risks on beaches

Beach safety – Government of Australia

Diving and snorkelling

You must provide a medical declaration for diving or snorkelling.

Follow the instructions and warnings of local authorities.

Safety information for divers and snorkellers – Government of Australia

Trekking and mountaineering

Weather conditions may be dry during the summer. You should be prepared for hot weather.

If you intend on trekking or mountaineering:

  • never do so alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • ensure that you’re properly equipped and well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary, including when you expect to be back to camp
  • obtain detailed information on trekking routes before setting out and do not venture off marked trails or slopes

Remote areas

Some regions in Australia’s interior are very isolated and have small populations. Services are scarce.

You may have difficulty getting adequate mobile phone coverage if you travel there by car.

  • Avoid travelling alone
  • Inform relatives of your itinerary

Road safety

Road conditions and road safety are very good throughout the country. Exercise caution when driving in rural areas at night. Drivers often drive at excessive speeds. Roaming animals and road trains pose further hazards.

Access to some remote locations may be impossible during severe weather conditions. Due to the great distances between settlements and the isolation of many outback areas:

  • avoid travelling in extreme heat conditions
  • plan your overland route carefully
  • provide a friend or relative with your itinerary, and ensure that your vehicle is in good repair
  • carry a first-aid kit and personal medication
  • carry sufficient fuel, water, and food supplies
  • bring a satellite phone or an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB)

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

Information about foreign domestic airlines

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

We have obtained the information on this page from the Australian authorities. It can, however, change at any time.

Verify this information with the  Foreign Representatives in Canada .

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you use for travel.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country’s entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid on the day of entry into the country.

Passport for official travel

Different entry rules may apply.

Official travel

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

Relevant Travel Health Notices

  • Global Measles Notice - 13 March, 2024
  • COVID-19 and International Travel - 13 March, 2024

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

  • travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
  • making multiple trips to endemic areas
  • staying for extended periods in rural areas
  • visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
  • engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

  • In this country, risk of  dengue  is sporadic. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue fever.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Medical services and facilities

Health care is excellent. Service is available throughout the country.

Payment is expected at time of service.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad .

Canada and Australia are signatories to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. This enables a Canadian imprisoned in Australia to request a transfer to a Canadian prison to complete a sentence. The transfer requires the agreement of both Canadian and Australian authorities. This process can take a long time and there is no guarantee that the transfer will be approved by either or both sides.

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Australia.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Australia, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Australian court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Australia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Bush and forest fires

Bush and forest fires are common between October and April, particularly in areas covered by bushes, long grass or coastal scrub. Elevated fire danger ratings and alert levels may be applied to affected areas. The air quality in areas near active fires may deteriorate due to heavy smoke.

In case of a major fire:

  • stay away from the affected area, particularly if you suffer from respiratory ailments
  • be prepared to modify your travel arrangements or even evacuate the area on short notice
  • follow the instructions of local emergency services personnel
  • monitor local media for up-to-date information on the situation

Risk Levels

  take normal security precautions.

Take similar precautions to those you would take in Canada.

Exercise a high degree of caution

There are certain safety and security concerns or the situation could change quickly. Be very cautious at all times, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.

IMPORTANT: The two levels below are official Government of Canada Travel Advisories and are issued when the safety and security of Canadians travelling or living in the country or region may be at risk.

  Avoid non-essential travel

Your safety and security could be at risk. You should think about your need to travel to this country, territory or region based on family or business requirements, knowledge of or familiarity with the region, and other factors. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving.

  Avoid all travel

You should not travel to this country, territory or region. Your personal safety and security are at great risk. If you are already there, you should think about leaving if it is safe to do so.

Australian Visa Information

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the  Department of Home Affairs website.

There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is  here .

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.

eVisitor  (subclass 651) This is a free visa for multiple visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months at a time within a 12-month period. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of European countries and it cannot be extended.

Visitor visa  (subclass 600) The Visitor visa allows you to visit Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It is open to all nationalities. Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.

The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.

You can only apply for the  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located  here .

For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. For more information on different visa types, and Australian visa requirements including how to apply for an Australian visa, visit the  Department of Home Affairs  website.

If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.

See the Department of Home Affairs website for details.

Entry and Exit

Australia has reopened its borders to travellers. For further information, please refer to the websites of the Australian Department of Home Affairs a nd Australian High Commission in Singapore .

For the latest updates on Australia’s COVID-19 situation, you may also wish to refer to the official website of the Australian Department of Health  for information on public health travel advisory affecting travellers from Singapore. As entry restrictions may change at short notice, we advise you to contact your travel agency, or the nearest High Commission of Australia to ensure that you have accurate information for your specific purpose prior to departure.

Singaporeans are required to obtain a visa before travelling to Australia. Some visas can be applied online, while others need to be applied at the  Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC)  in Singapore.

The  Australian Department of Home Affairs  provides that Singapore citizens visiting for short-term tourism or business may apply for the Electronic Travel Authority (visa subclass 601) via the ETA app (from  Apple Store (Apple)  or  Google Play Store (Android) ) before their travels. The ETA, if granted, will be valid for one year and will allow Singapore citizens to visit multiple times for up to 90 days per visit. Singapore citizens may also apply for a Long Validity Visitor visa (visa subclass 600) at the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC) in Singapore. Applicants must provide their personal biometric identifiers when they apply for the visa. The visa, if granted, will be valid for six years and will allow Singapore citizens to visit multiple times for up to 90 days per visit. As visa requirements often change at short notice, we advise you to contact your travel agency, or the Australian High Commission in Singapore for up-to-date information.

Australia commits to strict biosecurity policies to protect its unique environment and its human, animal and plant health. Before you arrive in Australia, you will be given an Incoming Passenger Card. You must mark “YES” on your card if you are carrying, on your person, in your luggage or carry-on, goods that may pose a biosecurity risk, such as plant material, animal products, certain food, traditional medicine or herbs and wooden articles. You must declare honestly as false or misleading declaration is a serious offence in Australia. For more information on biosecurity, you may visit the  Department of Agriculture and Water Resources  website.

Visitors or long-term stayers in Australia must ensure they do not overstay beyond their given visa period. Overstaying is taken very seriously by the Australian Border Force and may also result in difficulties for future visits to Australia. Hence, if you intend to stay longer than the period granted on your visa, or find out that your visa has expired, you must seek advice from the nearest Department of Home Affairs office. Further information and guidance can be found on the  Australian Border Force  website.

Safety and Security

While Australia is generally safe, there have been incidents of pickpocketing, apartment break-ins or vehicle break-ins. Hence, you must exercise precautions on personal safety and over your belongings at all times. Vehicle break-ins are particularly common in tourist spots in Western Australia, for which care must be taken not to leave belongings unattended in your rental/vehicles, to avoid, among others, the loss of your passport, wallet, bag, other valuable items, and incurring fees payable for a damaged rental vehicle.

Australia is geographically almost as large as the United States. Visitors to Australia often underestimate the distances taken to travel from one location to another. Interstate overland travel (by car for example) across Australia can last hours to days. Distance-driving under unfamiliar road and weather conditions along with irregular mobile phone connectivity in rural areas heightens the risk to a foreign driver’s safety and well-being. If driving, it is important that you plan your journeys carefully, and take frequent rest breaks. Where possible, also consider alternative travel options such as bus or coaches, when visiting remote tourist spots. If you plan to drive, please ensure that you bring along your passport and driving licence, familiarise yourself with and adhere to road and traffic rules in the state that you are travelling.

Australia imposes strict penalties for any driver that flouts traffic and road rules.

It is strictly illegal, in all Australian states, if the driver or passenger does not wear a seatbelt. In Western Australia, for example, not wearing a seatbelt will result in a penalty of the minimum of AUD 550.00 as a passenger. Drivers are responsible for their passengers, and will also be penalised just as much if any passenger is unrestrained. Please refer to  Tourism Australia  for a guide on Australia’s road rules and regulations.

Causing harm in any traffic accident in any state in Australia is a serious offence, and offenders will be prosecuted, with the potential for severe penalties including jail time.

Citizens who are detained by law enforcement authorities in Australia can request Consular access, and the authority will procedurally offer Consular access to detained foreigners. Any detained citizen will need to expressly consent to Consular access before the Singapore High Commission can render assistance to them.

General Travel Advice

Overseas Travel – Be Informed & Be Safe [Updated on 5 February 2024]

Singaporeans planning overseas travel are reminded to take the necessary precautions, including being prepared to deal with accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Singaporeans are also reminded to be familiar with your destination’s local laws, customs, and COVID-19 regulations.

Demonstrations do occur in major cities across the world. Such demonstrations can sometimes escalate into violence. It is important for Singaporeans to keep abreast of local news, avoid any protests or demonstrations and heed the advice of the local authorities.

When participating in outdoor leisure activities overseas, Singaporeans should be mindful that certain sporting activities, especially in open seas, may carry risks. Besides ensuring that one has the physical competencies and appropriate condition to undertake the activity, every effort should be made to ascertain if the trip organiser or guide is reliable and competent, and that appropriate safety and contingency plans are in place. When in doubt, Singaporeans should consult the relevant professional bodies or sporting associations for specific advice.

For those planning to travel, here are some tips:

Before travelling

  • Familiarise yourself with our network of overseas missions.
  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance and be familiar with the terms and coverage.
  • Equip yourself with research about your destination’s entry requirements, current situation, local laws and customs.
  • eRegister with us on our website ( www.mfa.gov.sg ) so that we may reach out to you during an emergency.

While travelling

  • Always take care of your personal safety, remain vigilant and monitor local weather news, advisories, and security developments.
  • Exercise caution around large gatherings and avoid locations known for demonstrations or disturbances.
  • Be prepared for possible delays and last-minute changes in travel plans especially during unforeseen events such as natural disasters, social unrest or terror attacks.
  • Stay connected with your friends and family. Inform them of your whereabouts and provide them with your overseas contact details.
  • In the event that you require consular assistance, please contact the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

Advisory: Email Scams

There have been reports of individuals receiving scam emails/messages purportedly sent from friends in distress overseas. These emails/messages typically originate from an email address/social media known to the receiver bearing claims of the sender getting into trouble overseas and urgently requesting financial assistance. The sender would also claim to have approached a Singapore Embassy/Consulate and the local Police for help to no avail.

MFA takes the safety of all Singaporeans very seriously.  Singaporeans in distress approaching our Overseas Missions for assistance will be rendered with all necessary consular assistance.  If you receive such emails/messages from purported friends seeking funds transfers, we strongly advise you to call them first to verify the authenticity of the emails/messages before responding to their request.  It is also not advisable to give out any personal information such as NRIC/passport numbers, address, telephone number, etc.  Any form of reply, even one of non-interest, could result in more unsolicited emails.  Members of the public who suspect that they have fallen prey to such scams should report the matter to the Police immediately.  Should Singaporeans abroad require consular assistance, they can contact the nearest Singapore Overseas  Mission  or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hr Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a ministry of the Government of Singapore responsible for conducting and managing diplomatic relations between Singapore and other countries and regions.
