Off-Peak train times generally fall into two main categories***:

• Intercity Off-Peak times: Monday to Friday (except bank holidays) from 09:30 to 16:00, and after 19:00. Exact times vary across routes and train companies, but in general - you'll find off-peak times outside of conventional commuter hours.
• Transport for London Off-Peak times : Monday to Friday from the first service to 06:30, from 09:30 to 16:00, and after 19:00.

When are Super Off-Peak train times?

Exact Super Off-Peak train times can vary across routes and train companies, but they’re usually the least busy travel periods during the week. Super Off-Peak travel times are normally between around 10:00 to 15:30 and from 19:15 onwards Monday to Friday. You can also travel Super Off-Peak during weekends and bank holidays.

Which tickets can I travel with during Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak times?

There are a few different  ticket types  you can travel with during Off-Peak times. 

Off-peak Single 

You can travel on any Off-Peak train on the date shown on the ticket.

Off-Peak Return

With  Return tickets  you can travel on any Off-Peak train. For the outward journey this must be on the date shown on the ticket and for the return journey, within one calendar month.

Off-Peak Day Return

The outward and return journey must be made on the same date as shown on the ticket but on any Off-Peak train.

Super Off-Peak

For the quietest times of day. They offer the same type of flexibility as Off-Peak tickets but have further restrictions on travelling at only Super Off-Peak times.

Avanti West Coast Off-Peak times

All Friday services are Off-Peak. From Monday-Thursday, Off-Peak tickets for trains departing London Euston are available between 9:26 and 15:01, and after 18:44. For trains into London, the Off-Peak window generally begins for services arriving after 11:30, but this varies depending on where you’re travelling from.

LNER Off-Peak times

Off-Peak tickets for trains departing London Kings Cross are available between 08:00 and 15:59, and after 17:45. For trains into London, the Off-Peak window begins for trains arriving after 10:08. All trains on Fridays are now Super Off-Peak (except between London Kings Cross and Stevenage).

Greater Anglia Off-Peak times

Off-Peak tickets for trains departing London Liverpool Street are available for services departing after 09:30, and outside of the 16:29-18:34 commuter window. For trains into London, the Off-Peak window applies to services arriving after 10:00.

Thameslink Off-Peak times

Off-Peak tickets for trains departing London are available if you're departing between 09:30 and 16:30, or after 19:01. For trains into London, the Off-Peak window applies to services arriving after 10:00.

CrossCountry Off-Peak times

Generally speaking, the Off-Peak window begins after 09:30 and outside of evening commuter hours - 15:30-18:15 - for travel in and out of big cities. Super Off-Peak tickets become available after 10:00.

South Western Railway Off-Peak times

Off-Peak tickets for trains departing London Waterloo are available after 09:00. From trains into London, the Off-Peak window opens at 10:00, unless you're travelling in First Class, where it closes between 16:00 and 19:00.

What are off-peak train times.

Off-Peak train times are generally accepted as those outside of the traditional morning or evening rush hour. But how do you know when your ticket is valid? Put simply: When is Off-Peak?

On short hops and local journeys, Off-Peak train times usually start at 08:45, 09:00, 09:15 or 09:30 on weekdays. On longer-distance trips, especially on trains to London, restrictions can be more complicated. They can be based on when you arrive at your destination, rather than when you leave.

Do Off-Peak train times vary by company?

Yes, they do. For example, on Avanti West Coast and LNER , all peak times have been abolished on Fridays. This means that you can use an Off-Peak (or Super Off-Peak) ticket on their trains at any time on a Friday.

If you’re travelling on CrossCountry , Off-Peak usually starts at 09:30 on a weekday. Many companies also restrict Off-Peak train tickets during the evening rush hour.

When are Off-Peak train times?

It’d be impossible to list all Off-Peak train times, but let’s go through some of the most common examples. 

Travelling from Edinburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed or Newcastle to London Kings Cross (or vice-versa)? Due to their so-called  Simpler Fares Trial , there are no longer any Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak fares. You can find out more on our  dedicated page . 

For other journeys with  LNER , you’ll only find a Super Off-Peak or Anytime fare. The typical Super Off-Peak times are 09:06 to 14:59 and after 18:59 on Mondays to Thursdays from London Kings Cross. Heading south, you can arrive in London after 11:17. On Fridays to Sundays (and Bank Holidays) there aren’t any restrictions. 

On journeys that don’t involve London (such as Peterborough to Edinburgh), Off-Peak train times are simpler. They’re usually after 09:30 on weekdays and any time on weekends and Bank Holidays. 

Avanti West Coast 

Avanti West Coast Off-Peak times can vary depending on where you’re travelling to/from and how long your journey is. 

If you’re travelling from  Lancaster  (or north of there) to London (or vice-versa), then you can arrive in London after 10:05 and leave London after 09:05 Monday to Thursday with an Off-Peak ticket. There aren’t any restrictions on Fridays, weekends or Bank Holidays. This applies to the  Off-Peak Single  or  Off-Peak Return . 

For journeys from  Preston  southwards (such as Manchester or Liverpool) to London, the restrictions are a little less generous. For example, the  Off-Peak Single  or  Off-Peak Return  are only valid to arrive in London after 11:29 Monday to Thursday. For journeys from London, they’re valid between 09:26 and 15:00 then after 18:45. 

If you’re travelling north of  Rugby  (such as from Crewe to Carlisle) then the  Off-Peak Single  and  Off-Peak Return  fares are valid after 04:15, so they effectively have no time restrictions. The only exception is for journeys north of  Oxenholme Lake District  to Glasgow , where these tickets are only valid after 09:00 on weekdays. 

When you book with  Railsmartr , we’ll offer you the cheapest fare that’s valid for your journey – so don’t worry if it seems that you’re being given an Off-Peak ticket for what seems to be a peak time! 

Journeys within South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester 

If you’re using an  Off-Peak Day Return  and it’s fully  within  one of the areas above, then you can typically use these tickets after 09:29, before 16:00 and after 18:30 on weekdays. There aren’t any restrictions on weekends and Bank Holidays. 

For journeys between these areas (such as Hebden Bridge to Rochdale), the  Off-Peak Day Return  is typically valid after 09:29, but there aren’t any afternoon/evening restrictions. 

Until 28 June 2024, most trips in Scotland are Off-Peak all of the time! As part of a fares trial, ‘peak’ times have been abolished. You can read more in our dedicated guide to  ScotRail Off-Peak fares . 

Are Bank Holidays Off-Peak?

Yes. The railway treats a Bank Holiday like a weekend (or more specifically, a Sunday) when it comes to train tickets. This means that you can use Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets all day on Bank Holidays.

Don’t forget that the timetable will likely be different to a normal weekday too, so check ahead before you make your way to the station.

When are the Off-Peak train times on my route?

While we can’t list when every single ticket is valid, there’s an easy way for you to check. Every ticket comes with a ‘restriction code’ which tells us about any time and date restrictions that might apply. Let’s take a look at where to find this code on an eTicket:

Below all of your journey details, you’ll see a heading called ‘ Ticket Details ‘. This will tell you the restriction code that applies to your ticket. In this case, the restriction code is ‘1L’. By following the link on the ticket, we’ll reach this page:

That’s a lot of information at once! Here’s what this page can tell us:

• Which trains we’re not allowed to use on our outward and return journeys
• That if we break our journey overnight on the outward journey, the same morning restrictions will apply (so we can’t set off again first thing in the morning on a Monday to Thursday!)
• Other restriction codes that apply if you’re taking a particular operator

• That restrictions will be lifted on certain dates, such as over Christmas.

So, how can we apply this to our ticket?

• We’re travelling through London Kings Cross, so on Monday to Thursday afternoons, we can’t leave there between 15:00 and 18:59
• We’re booked on the 18:58 train, so this wouldn’t be valid on a Monday to Thursday. However, we’re travelling on a Friday, so we’re all good!

Are Off-Peak train tickets refundable?

Yes! When you book with Railsmartr , all Off-Peak train tickets are refundable. Your journey doesn’t have to be disrupted, you can simply change your mind.

Many companies charge an admin fee if you try to refund them, which can sometimes wipe out most of the value of the ticket. That’s why we’d always recommend booking with us.

When are Super Off-Peak train times?

In most cases,  Super Off-Peak  train times on long-distance journeys are from around 10:00 to 15:00 and after 19:00 on weekdays. If you’re travelling out of London King’s Cross with  LNER   or London Euston with  Avanti West Coast , then Super Off-Peak tickets are usually valid all day on Fridays, too.

The main exception to this rule is if you’re travelling with  West Midlands Trains   (or London Northwestern Railway as they’re known on some routes). Their Super Off-Peak tickets are very restrictive. Here’s what you need to know about West Midlands Trains Super Off-Peak tickets:

• They’re usually only valid to arrive in London after  13:00 . You also can’t leave your origin station between  16:00 and  19:00
• When you’re leaving London, they’re valid after  10:30 , before  15:59 and after  19:01
• These restrictions apply on Mondays to Saturdays, so you can only travel at any time on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

If you’re travelling with  South Western Railway , then you’ll also find similar restrictions. Their Super Off-Peak tickets are only valid to arrive in London after 14:01 (Monday to Saturday) and you can only return from London between  12:01  and  15:59  and after  19:01 . Some operators in the South East also do Super Off-Peak tickets that are only valid on weekends and Bank Holidays, such as  Great Northern ,  Thameslink   and  Greater Anglia .

I’m still not sure if my ticket is valid!

When you choose to travel Off-Peak, you can benefit from:

• More seating available during these quieter parts of the day
• A choice of single, return and open return tickets
• 1/3 off Off-Peak fares with your Railcard
• On some routes up to four children aged 5 to 15 can travel with you for just £2. Book online for an automatic discount

When are they valid?

You can travel Off-Peak on weekdays outside busy times. You can also use your Off-Peak train tickets to travel at any time on weekends and bank holidays. The times you can use your tickets vary, so use the journey planner to check for Off-Peak services.

What are the timings?

Off-Peak singles and the outward portion of Off-Peak returns are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 4.29am the following morning. When using Off-Peak Day tickets, all travel must be completed by 4.29am on the following morning of the date on the ticket.

What are the times for Peak and Off-Peak travel?

The morning peak is generally from when the first train of the day leaves to the last train arriving in London before 10:00am. In the evening it is generally between 16:30 and 19:01 for services leaving London. Anytime outside of this, would generally be considered off peak travel.

How do I buy Off-Peak train tickets?

It’s simple to book your Off-Peak tickets:

• Online – collect from the station or have them posted out
• On-the-go using our On Track app ( iOS ) and collect at the station
• Buy from ticket machines at the station
• Head to a ticket office at your local station

LIRR and Metro-North fares

About railroad fares.

• Peak fares are charged during weekday rush hours on trains scheduled to arrive in NYC terminals between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. or depart NYC terminals between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. On Metro-North, peak fares also apply to weekday trains that leaves Grand Central between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
• Off-peak fares are charged all other times on weekdays, all day Saturday and Sunday, and on holidays.
• If you prefer to not use an app, see our fare tables.
• Most ticket types are the same on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, but there are some exceptions.
• For example, Penn Station to Hicksville can be used for Atlantic Terminal to Massapequa Park.
• If you're traveling within New York City on the LIRR or Metro-North, you can get a CityTicket for $5 during off-peak hours or $7 during peak hours.
• If you're transferring between the LIRR and Metro-North, you can start a trip on one railroad and transfer to the other railroad at Grand Central for a flat $8 fee with Combo Ticket .
• The easiest way to buy tickets is with the  TrainTime app on your phone.

Railroad fare types.

These are valid for 60 days, including the date of sale. Off-peak tickets are subject to an additional surcharge, payable to the conductor, if used on a peak train.

For travel outside Manhattan on Metro-North, and outside Zones 1/3 on the LIRR, the fare is the same on all trains. On Metro-North, look for "intermediate" tickets. On the LIRR, look for peak tickets.

You do not have to pay more or buy two tickets if you have to make transfers in the same direction to complete your trip.

• On the LIRR, if you have to make a transfer that involves a change of direction (for instance, traveling from Mineola to Valley Stream via Jamaica), look for a ticket "via" your transfer point when you buy.
• On Metro-North, if you make a transfer that involves a change of direction at Fordham or Harlem-125th St, you will need to buy two tickets. Travel to/from Yankee Stadium and Mets-Willets Point on game days is exempt from these rules. See the section below.

Round-trip: Any combination of two one-way tickets. These are priced according to the fares you select (peak, off-peak, etc.).

Note for Metro-North riders:

• One-way and round-trip tickets on the Harlem and Hudson lines are not accepted on the New Haven Line and vice versa.

Monthly: Good for unlimited rides during the calendar month indicated on the ticket. This is the most cost-effective ticket if you’re commuting 3 or more days a week.

Monthly tickets are non-transferable; the first person to use this ticket is the only person who can use it. Available for purchase starting the 25th of the prior month. 

Weekly : Good for unlimited rides for a calendar week (Saturday through Friday).

Weekly tickets go on sale at ticket offices and ticket machines beginning Wednesday for the following week. This ticket is not transferable.

10-Trip : Good for 10 one-way rides to or from City Zone 1 (LIRR) or Manhattan (Metro-North). Tickets are valid for six months from date of sale and may be used by more than one person, even when traveling together. The following ten-trip ticket types are available:

• 10-Trip peak: Sold at the price of 10 peak one-way fares.
• 10-Trip off-peak: These tickets save 15 percent off the price of 10 off-peak one-way tickets.
• 10-Trip for seniors, Medicare recipients, or people with disabilities: These are sold at the price of 10 one-way fares at the reduced price. These are not valid on inbound morning peak trains.  These can be used by more than one person, even when you are traveling together, if they are all eligible for this special fare and present the required identification.
• 10-Trip intermediate (Metro-North only): Good for 10 trips between two stations outside of Manhattan on the same line.

Notes for Metro-North riders:

• Monthly and weekly tickets to/from Manhattan on the New Haven Line are accepted on the Harlem and Hudson lines where the value of the Harlem/Hudson monthly/weekly ticket is the same or less. 
• 10-Trip tickets on the Harlem and Hudson lines are not accepted on the New Haven Line and vice versa.

Riders pay $5 for travel within New York City during all off-peak hours and $7 during peak hours. These are valid on day of purchase only.

These tickets are sold at ticket windows or ticket machines in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, or Queens, and via the TrainTime app.

They are not valid for travel to/from Belmont Park, Elmont or Far Rockaway. They can be purchased onboard a train only if you are a senior citizen or a person with a disability.

Riders pay $5 during all off-peak hours and $7 during peak hours. These are valid on day of purchase only.

The Far Rockaway Ticket can only be purchased at Far Rockaway station. It can be used for travel between Far Rockaway and stations in LIRR Zone 1, with some exceptions. 

• Far Rockaway Ticket cannot be purchased at other LIRR stations. 
• It can only be purchased in the TrainTime app if you share your location with the app to confirm you are near the station. 
• It can be purchased onboard a train only if you are a senior citizen or a person with a disability.

Far Rockaway Ticket can also be used for travel to Rosedale, Laurelton, Locust Manor, and Jamaica. You must buy the ticket with a destination within Zone 1 (any of the above stations).

The Combo Ticket makes traveling between LIRR and Metro-North stations easier, cheaper, and more accessible. You will be able to start a trip with one railroad and transfer to the other railroad at Grand Central for a flat $8 fee. From there, you can travel anywhere in that system.

UniRail and UniTicket are joint tickets offering special discounts for travel from certain suburban LIRR and Metro-North stations on connecting services.

Seniors, people with disabilities, and Medicare recipients can save up to 50% off the full one-way peak fare. You must have proper documentation available.

You can use reduced-fare tickets at all times except inbound weekday morning peak trains. These are valid for 60 days including the date of sale.

You can also purchase tickets on the train without paying the higher onboard price if you can show the proper documentation.

Documentation you can use:

• Government/state-issued driver’s license or non-driver ID;
• Government/state-issued passport;
• NYC Department of Aging ID card;
• Reduced-Fare MetroCard or Reduced-Fare EasyPay Card;
• Birth certificate or Medicare card issued by the Social Security Administration, if accompanied by a different photo ID.

People with disabilities can use an Access-a-Ride card, an Able-Ride card, a Para-transit card, or a Suffolk County Accessible Transportation card.

Children under 5 ride free.

Family fare: Except on morning rush hour trains toward Manhattan, up to four children aged 5-11 may ride for $1 each when accompanied by a fare-paying adult who is at least 18 years old.

A fifth child or more, unaccompanied children, and all children on morning rush hour trains toward Manhattan pay half the adult fare (peak or off-peak) as applicable.

These tickets are valid for 60 days including date of sale. Children age 12 and over pay the full adult fare.

Special fares are available for students under 21 years of age attending accredited elementary or secondary schools. They provide a discount of up to one-third off the price of a regular monthly ticket.

For LIRR: Learn more about LIRR Mail&Ride for Schools or log in . Or, complete the school ticket application and bring it to a ticket office. Applications must be signed by a school official and have the school seal affixed, and are non-transferable.

Special discounted one-day, round-trip group tickets may be purchased for organized groups of 30 or more. Smaller groups of 10 or more may be able to save using 10-trip tickets.

For LIRR: Group leaders should call 718-558-7419, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., for reservations at least two weeks in advance. Group tickets are sold through this department in advance and at open ticket offices. (Please avoid morning rush hours.)

Active-duty U.S. military personnel will be charged off-peak fare on LIRR and Metro-North, including on peak trains.

You must have valid active-duty ID from the U.S. Armed Forces.

MetroCards are no longer available on round-trip Long Island Rail Road or Metro-North tickets at ticket machines. 

A standalone $29 MetroCard (+$1 fee) will be available for purchase at ticket machines and ticket offices. 

Ticket offices will also sell round-trip ($5.80) MetroCards either with a round-trip railroad ticket (no fee) or standalone (+$1 fee).

You can also tap and go with OMNY using your contactless debit or credit card, smartphone, or smart device at all NYCT subway stations.

Train to the Game railroad fares

One-way, round-trip, and 10-trip tickets between Yankee Stadium and the Harlem and New Haven Lines are only valid on game days. These cost slightly more than fares to Grand Central.

You can use these tickets via transfer at Harlem-125th St or Grand Central, or on one of our special direct Yankee Clipper trains.

You do not need a peak ticket if you are coming from the Harlem or New Haven Lines and going to an afternoon or evening game even though you may be riding a peak train from Grand Central or Harlem-125th St to Yankee Stadium.

Weekly and monthly tickets valid for travel to Grand Central can be used for Yankees travel at no additional charge.

One-way, round-trip, and 10-trip tickets are available to/from Mets-Willets Point and cost the same as tickets to/from Manhattan.

There is no additional charge or special ticket if you need to change directions at Woodside.

If you are coming from Long Island and going to an afternoon or evening game, you do not need to buy a peak ticket even though you may be riding a peak train from Woodside to Mets-Willets Point.

Weekly and monthly tickets valid for travel to Manhattan can be used for Mets travel at no additional charge.

On days when NJ Transit rail shuttle service is running, LIRR and Metro-North joint tickets are available. Select "Meadowlands" at the ticket machine.

These tickets are valid for travel to/from Penn Station or Grand Central, and NJ Transit travel between Penn Station and the Meadowlands.

The joint ticket does not include the subway fare between Grand Central and Penn Station.

Other things to know

• Trains operate on a weekend schedule on these holidays : New Year's Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Off-peak fares are valid all day on these holidays. 
• On Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the day after Thanksgiving, the LIRR will run a weekday schedule and Metro-North will run a Saturday schedule, with off peak fares valid on all trains. 
• On three additional holidays–Columbus Day, Election Day and Veterans Day–we will run weekday service, but Reduced-Fare tickets will be accepted on LIRR a.m. peak trains.  

Extension of ride:

• LIRR one way, round trip, and peak 10-Trip tickets: You pay the fare difference between ticket value and value of the extended ride, rounded up to the nearest dollar.
• Monthlies, weeklies, all MNR tickets, and off-peak 10-Trip tickets: One way fare between the zone on your ticket and the zone you are actually traveling to/from, rounded up to the nearest dollar. No on board surcharge.

Step-up fare:

• For off-peak tickets on peak trains, or senior tickets on morning peak trains, you pay the difference between full peak price and value of ticket, rounded up to the nearest dollar.
• Note: When stepping up an off-peak 10-Trip ticket, the discount is forfeited.

What is an off-peak train ticket?

Off-Peak tickets are a great way to save money on train tickets by travelling on quieter trains, but still giving you more flexibility than a Super Off-Peak ticket . They're ideal for days out where you want to avoid the morning rush, or for a working lunch that means you might have to return during the evening commute. They're available for both Standard Class and First Class train ticket .

We offer Off-Peak Day Return tickets that allow you to make a return journey on the same day, but only during off-peak hours and Off-Peak Single Train Ticket: Similar, valid for a single journey during off-peak hours.

 What are off peak times for train travel?

Off peak train time to and from London

Travelling into London? You can travel on any train arriving at London Waterloo (or any station in zones 1 to 6) after 10:00.

Travelling away from London? You can travel on any train leaving London Waterloo from 09:30.

Off peak train time

You can sometimes travel earlier, particularly if you're travelling long-distance - these are called easements. For the best way to find out which trains you can use your ticket on, book through our website.

When can I buy an Off-Peak ticket?

You can buy anytime from twelve weeks before you travel, right up to when you arrive at the station from the ticket office or machines. To help make sure customers don't get on the wrong train with a ticket that's not valid, some of our ticket machines won't sell Off-Peak tickets until shortly before they can be used.

Are there any extra discounts on Off-Peak tickets?

With our super off peak tickets you can save 34% extra with all railcards on Standard Class Off-Peak fares and up to 34% on First Class Off-Peak fares if you hold a  Senior ,  HM Forces  or  Disabled Persons Railcard. You can also save on child tickets for all Off-Peak fares!

Can I break my journey with an Off-Peak ticket?

Generally, yes. You'll normally be allowed to break your journey with an off-peak ticket. Some journeys may mean that you can't, and you should check the full restrictions on your ticket to see if you can or not.

I need to travel on a different train - can I change my off peak ticket?

Off-Peak tickets give you some flexibility - if you can still use an Off-Peak ticket on the train you now want to travel on, you can just catch that one instead!

If you want to travel during peak time, you'll just need to pay the difference between the Off-Peak fare and the  Anytime train ticket fare. There's no admin fee to pay but you will need to do this before you travel - even if you plan to do it on board the train, you might still be liable for a Penalty Fare if you board without making sure your ticket is valid.

What happens if I miss my next train because of a delay?

If you've been delayed by the railway (for example, if you miss your connecting service because of a delay to your train) then you can use your ticket on the next train. If your ticket wouldn't normally be valid on that train (for example, if it's a peak time train) then speak to the ticket office or on-board team to get your ticket stamped or signed to allow you to travel.

If you've been delayed by something that's not within our control, then you can use your ticket on the next Off-Peak service.

If a delay on one of our trains means you end up being 15 minutes late or more to your destination, you may be entitled to claim compensation under our  Delay Repay  scheme

There are engineering works now and I don't want to travel. Can I get a refund?

If there's a change in journey times or mode of travel (a bus replacement service) and you no longer want to travel you can claim a full refund on the unused tickets from your original retailer.

If you're buying your tickets more than six weeks before you travel, we always recommend that you check timetables again at the six-week mark and the planned engineering work timetable.
