The M25 is the largest ring road (motorway) in the UK. It was originally proposed in the 1958 Buchanan Report on Motorway Development and the first section opened in 1975. It was completed in 1986 and it encircles London, connecting a number of major cities and airports, including London-Heathrow and Gatwick.

Since its opening, the M25 has been plagued by traffic congestion and accidents. In 1997, a section of the M25 was nicknamed "Britain's busiest stretch of road" due to the level of congestion and the number of accidents. As of October 2020, the M25 has seen over 1,860 serious accidents and 47 fatalities in the past five years. Despite these figures, the Department for Transport report that the M25 has seen an overall decrease in fatal and serious collisions since 2005.

Why m25 was not clear from the snow last night, and why there were not enough plow trucks on the road to make it safe for drivers? Who is responsible for it? What are the excuses this year? Please do not blame the snow because we all knew it is coming.

Can you confirm a diversion for M25 on dates 7/10/2021 and 8/10/2021 we have been lead to beleive Fedex drivers had followed a diversion which took them through a redroutes zone. A12 Eastern Avenue & A406.

Traffic at a standstill few miles out of dart Ford tunnel heading north towards M11. Not good.

Again they have the audacity to charge me £2.50 for sitting in ever lengthening queues of traffic at the Dartford CrossingIt should be free if the company making a fortune out of drivers cannot keep the congestion down to a reasonable few minutes

Hi. Can you tell me please how I can find something about the traffic on M25 and M23 on the 28th June 2019? Thank you

M25 drivers face more delays as closure enters third day

National highways south-east has said the engineering work is 'on schedule'..

Motorists are enduring further disruption on Sunday as a five-mile stretch of the M25 remains closed for a third successive day.

Drivers were warned of significant delays in both directions ahead of the shutdown and have been urged to try and avoid the diversion route area.

The closure between junctions 10 and 11 in Surrey, which began at 9pm on Friday and will run until 6am on Monday, is for a bridge to be demolished and the installation of a new gantry.

On Sunday morning, National Highways South-East (NHSE) said the engineering work was "on schedule". It is the first scheduled daytime all-lanes closure on the M25 since it opened in 1986.

Gantry installed overnight and works remain on schedule. The #M25 remains closed in both directions between J10 and J11. Please consider alternative routes and only travel on the #M25 and diversion route if necessary. pic.twitter.com/C43iRVO9So — National Highways: South-East (@HighwaysSEAST) March 17, 2024

Concerns had been raised that thousands of drivers would be stuck in gridlocked traffic over the weekend, with one councillor calling it a "nightmare". However, Amanda Boote, of Woking Borough Council, said the traffic along the new route through the towns of Byfleet, West Byfleet, Woking and Ottershaw was not as bad as feared.

Saturday morning saw two-mile tailbacks on the motorway, but one business, based just off the diversion route outside Woking, told Yahoo News that it had been "really quiet" in their area. This may suggest that many people took the advice of National Highways project leader Jonathan Wade to stay at home and "decorate the bathroom" or "play in the garden".

However, the worst could still be to come, with planned engineering works on South Western Railway's network due to be carried out by Network Rail on Sunday, meaning replacement buses travelling through affected areas.

According to National Highways South-East (NHSE) the estimated average journey time through the diversion route was 25 minutes on Saturday. It added that it had made good progress during the first night of work, as it shared an image on X, formerly Twitter.

Michael Dnes, head of future roads technology at the Department for Transport, had warned that some of the "traffic currently ramming an eight-lane motorway" will filter onto the high street in the village of Byfleet, which is on the 11-mile diversion route. "It won't be pretty," he said.

Urging motorists to avoid the stretch of road would be difficult for many due to a lack of alternative options, he added.

"There's no parallel public transport worth talking about. Virtually all the trains are designed to run into central London. The bus network doesn't cover these kinds of journeys. Most travel distances aren't viable by bike or foot. 78% of the traffic on this bit of the M25 is traveling to or from somewhere fairly local. Only 2% is staying on the M25 all the way without turning off."

Meanwhile, some businesses made sacrifices in anticipation of traffic chaos. Mark Pollak, owner of Billy Tong, which caters for events and sells biltong at markets, said he expected to see 50% of the firm's turnover for the weekend go "down the drain", adding that he had to turn down a request to cater at an event in Guildford.

Residents in nearby Byfleet told Yahoo News UK on Thursday they were expecting "carnage", while council leaders in Surrey also said they are expecting "all sorts of gridlock". Meanwhile, St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey urged people to "only visit if it is necessary" over the weekend.

Watch: Drivers urged to ignore satnavs to prevent gridlock during M25 closure

The M25 between junctions 9 and 11 normally carries from 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles in each direction every hour from 10am until 9pm at weekends.

National Highways said modelling carried out while it was developing its plans for this weekend indicated vehicles would face delays of up to five hours without mitigation measures – such as urging drivers to stay away.

The government-owned company said its awareness campaign would help reduce traffic levels by approximately 50%, meaning the length of time added to journeys would be limited to around an hour.

But motoring experts warned official estimates of congestion levels might have been "optimistic". And National Highways itself cautioned that because the planned closure was "unprecedented", experts had "nothing to benchmark it against".

National Highways also urged drivers not to use their sat navs to attempt to find quicker alternative routes on minor roads due to fears this could cause major congestion.

When and where will the M25 be closed?

The M25 has been closed in both directions between junctions 10 (A3 Wisley) and 11 (A320 Chertsey Interchange), from 9pm on Friday, 15 March to 6am on Monday, 18 March.

Residents, holidaymakers, concertgoers and sports fans travelling to and around the capital have been urged to allow extra time for their journeys and find alternative travel arrangements.

Those travelling to Gatwick and Heathrow airports and Channel ports may be affected, National Highways warned. Travel journalist Simon Calder wrote on X that the "best route is by rail".

Travelling between the UK's two busiest airports, @HeathrowAirport and @Gatwick_Airport ? Between Friday night 15 March and 6am Monday 18 March, best route is by rail: Heathrow <-> Farringdon on Elizabeth Line. Farringdon <-> Gatwick on Thameslink. Total journey: about 90 minutes. — Simon Calder (@SimonCalder) March 15, 2024

This weekend's closure is the first of five closures between now and September 2024 under a "Junction 10 improvement scheme" aiming to increase the number of lanes to make journeys safer and improve the flow of traffic on the motorway.

The project, due to be completed in summer 2025, will also make it easier to enter and exit the M25 at junction 10, which is one of the UK's busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M25

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M25 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M25 will be reinstated shortly.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

Enter a custom name for this camera if required, then click the route you wish to save it to.

M25 closures: Drivers face fresh delays as another weekend closure is planned

From 9pm on Friday 10 May until 6am on Monday 13 May, a seven-mile stretch between junctions 9 and 10 in Surrey will be shut in both directions.

There are warnings that drivers will face fresh delays next month after a second full weekend closure of the M25 was announced.

It comes just a few weeks after a nearby section was shut so a bridge could be demolished in what was the motorway's first-ever planned daytime closure since it opened in 1986.

This will be carried out so concrete beams for a new bridge and gantry can be lifted into place.

It will be the second of five weekend planned closures of the motorway - which encircles London - as part of a £317m project to improve J10.

The scheme, due to be completed in summer 2025, will increase the number of lanes at J10, which is one of the country's busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

Among the people affected in May are set to be those travelling to, from and between the UK's two busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.

There were fears of severe congestion on diversion routes along A roads ahead of the first closure of a five-mile stretch between J10 and J11 in March.

But many drivers followed advice to avoid the area, meaning long hold-ups were avoided.

National Highways senior project manager Jonathan Wade has warned the next shutdown will be "far from a repeat of the previous closure" as the diversion routes are "longer and will be different for over-height vehicles and all other traffic".

He added: "Drivers listened to our advice last time which reduced motorway traffic levels by over two-thirds and meant delays were limited.

"Our advice again is please only travel if absolutely necessary and make sure you give yourself extra time if you do choose to use the M25."

The stretch between J9 and J11 is normally used by 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles in each direction every hour from 10am until 9pm at weekends.

Seven-mile stretch of M25 in Surrey to be closed between 10 and 13 May

Closure between junctions 9 and 10 will be second of five planned weekend closures on motorway

The second weekend closure of the M25 will take place between 10 and 13 May, National Highways has confirmed, with a seven-mile stretch of the road between junctions 9 and 10 in Surrey due to be shut.

In March a five-mile stretch of the motorway between junctions 10 and 11 was closed for a three-day period, the longest planned closure on the road since it was opened in 1986.

On Monday, National Highways released details of the latest closure, which will begin at 9pm on 10 May, with the road set to reopen at 6am on 13 May. The body has told drivers to expect delays, saying that the diversion routes for getting around the closures would be longer than they were in March.

It will be the second of five weekend closures planned for the M25 as part of the £317m upgrade of the motorway that encircles Greater London . The remaining three closures are due to take place throughout the rest of 2024 but National Highways has yet to give dates as to when.

The work will involve the installation of concrete beams for a new bridge, as well as new gantries.

Jonathan Wade, the senior project manager at National Highways, said the next shutdown would be “far from a repeat of the previous closure” as the diversion routes were “longer and will be different for over-height vehicles and all other traffic”.

He said: “Drivers listened to our advice last time, which reduced motorway traffic levels by over two-thirds and meant delays were limited. Our advice again is please only travel if absolutely necessary and make sure you give yourself extra time if you do choose to use the M25.”

The body has called on drivers to avoid the affected section of the motorway, pointing out that there will a 19-mile diversion route in place during the closure. There will be four diversionary routes in total, including clockwise and anticlockwise to and from Gatwick towards Heathrow for most traffic and over-height vehicles.

The March works, which were completed ahead of schedule , resulted in two-mile tailbacks on some stretches of road leading up to the junctions. Between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles normally use the M25 between junctions 9 and 11 per hour in each direction between 10am and 9pm on a weekend.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

travel alerts m25

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

travel alerts m25

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

travel alerts m25

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

travel alerts m25

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

travel alerts m25

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
