Traveling with Invisalign: Products To Keep in Your Travel Bag

Planning on traveling with invisalign me too..

Like you, I live to travel. I’ve built my entire life around being able to see the world as I please, and it’s not something I want to give up.

But I do, also, have to take care of my body and my health at the same time. I recently got Invisalign, and I’ve been learning in the process what traveling with Invisalign will be like. So here goes!

travel kit for invisalign

Why I Got Invisalign

After I turned 30, I started to notice my teeth were majorly shifting apart — there were huge gaps in my bottom teeth where previously they had been completely straight, and over time, it started to bother me more and more because you can see them when I talk or am on video. It got to the point that my mother would look at me and go “whoa.”

So I decided to get Invisalign, also known as clear braces , although there are alternatives you can compare like  Byte vs Smile Direct Club .

I’m currently on my second tray and am figuring out how to incorporate the high-maintenance of having Invisalign with traveling.

Invisalign (and many of the popular Invisalign alternatives ) is kind of a pain: you have to keep the trays in for 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat. But after you remove them, you then have to brush, floss, and brush your trays before you put them back in. So you need access to clean water, as well as a travel kit to take everywhere.

Here are the products I use for Invisalign and the things I think everyone considering traveling with Invisalign should know about!

Best Products for Traveling with Invisalign

First and foremost, you need a little travel kit that contains:

  • Travel size toothpaste
  • Floss or floss picks
  • Travel-sized mouthwash  (we recommend buying large bottle and pouring into small bottle)
  • Smartie retainer remover (a lifesaver when you don’t want to stick your dirty hands all the way in your mouth)
  • Aligner chewies to get them back into place

You will go through a LOT of mouthwash when you have Invisalign. When you’re traveling, and you can’t always know for sure if you have clean drinking water to brush, floss and rinse with. So in a pinch, I use mouthwash after meals, and then just do a more thorough brush when I get back to my hotel.

In addition, you should always ALWAYS have your retainer case with you. When you take them out, immediately place them in the case and NOT on a napkin or other surface where you might forget/ throw them out. If you don’t have your trays while traveling, you might end up adding time to your treatment. And no one wants that!

Denture cleaner. I know! It sounds awful! But they will help to keep your retainers clear and not cloudy.

Retainer bath: great for when you need a place to soak your trays

Invisalign is a commitment that changes your lifestyle and affects a whole lot of things. But it doesn’t have to interfere with your travels! I hope you enjoyed this list of products I use while traveling with Invisalign.

Have I missed anything? Do you have Invisalign? Tell me about your favorite products below!

I recently streamlined my kit. I carry small-ish crossbody purses (small to avoid neck & shoulder strain, cross-body for hands-free security). So zipper cases like the one you show won’t do (unless I want to leave my phone, inhaler, Tylenol, Tums, folding hairbrush/mirror, keys, earbuds, wallet, RFID-proof credit card case and assorted sample sizes of essential touch-up makeup home. Nope).

Until today I wore aligners. Now I have a retainer (and though I need to wear it most of the time, I needn’t obsess about wearing it 20-22 hrs. a day like I did the aligners). I can actually wait till I get home from a restaurant to clean, brush & floss. Here are three absolute essentials, whether for aligners or retainers: 1. Case. Ideally a slimline one that is watertight (you want to put your appliance in wet). 2. Mirror. Mine is part of a folding hairbrush (does double duty). 3. Collapsible drinking cup. Mine’s silicone, the diameter of a tennis ball, and collapses to 1/4″ thick, lid included. Last thing you want to have to do is use your hand to slurp up sink water in a public restroom. I generally fill mine with water from my drinking glass at the table, put the lid back on, and bring it into the restroom with me. No room in that purse for a water bottle (I keep one in the car, though).

Now, for the aligners (assuming a large enough purse): 1. Ziploc sandwich or snack bags instead of those cosmetic cases. Double up for strength, especially for the pointy things (see below). The bag should contain: 2. Travel toothbrush (the kind whose cover doubles as its handle). 3. Travel size toothpaste, the smaller the better. (If you fly internationally, you likely have a stash of these–and hotels will provide them free if you tell them you left yours home). 4. Floss picks or proxi-brushes. Less messy & awkward than actual floss. 5. (Optional) Infant/toddler toothbrush or even small “concealer” brush for brushing out your appliance without scratching it as you rinse it. In a pinch, you can (yuck) use your fingers.

Now that I have a retainer, and I needn’t obsess as much about fully brushing & flossing in a restroom immediately after a meal, but can wait till I get home to do the “full monty:” 1. Colgate Wisp toothbrushes. Tiny, disposable, pre-pasted, soft silicone bristles, with a pick on the end. Hard to find in stores now (used to be in the travel-size aisle) but very inexpensive in bulk at Amazon. 2. Flat “brush-picks.” They’re plastic, curved, with a rubber-bristled pointy end. Also disposable. 3. Maybe a floss-pick or two. The latter two fit in my retainer case–with room for the retainer! Use a snack-size baggie for the Wisps.

I can’t take my Invisalign out without Smartie Retainer Remover. Total life saver. I tried all the plastic removers and they were not strong enough to remove my super tight trays, so I invented Smartie Retainer Remover

Orthodontics Limited

7 Top Accessories to Help You Adjust to Your Invisalign Braces

travel kit for invisalign

Last updated: February 7, 2018 in Invisalign

Published by Dr. Charles Gemmi

A Board Certified Orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Charles Gemmi has been a practicing orthodontist with Orthodontics Limited since 2000 and is a member of the teaching staff at Einstein Medical Center. Orthodontics Limited is a Diamond+ Provider of Invisalign in Philadelphia and Hatboro, PA.

Invisalign aligners have become a very popular choice for orthodontic care. With these clear removable braces, you can get a beautiful smile without most people even noticing you have anything on your teeth.

There are a lot of pros to choosing Invisalign treatment:

  • They are clear plastic aligners that can be easily removed
  • Can be removed to eat and to brush and floss your teeth
  • Treatment includes a new set of aligners every two weeks as your teeth shift into proper alignment
  • Invisalign can also handle both simple and complicated alignment issues

But there are some adjustments to wearing them. You need to make sure you wear them at least for 20 to 22 hours day for the most effectiveness, and you need to brush and floss diligently every time you eat and drink, as well as to keep the clear aligners from getting stained and from smelling badly. It can also be an adjustment to learn how to get the aligners in and out properly.

Here are 7 top accessories to help you adjust to your Invisalign aligners:

1. Orthodontic Wax

Even though Invisalign aligners are usually more comfortable to wear, you can sometime still experience so discomfort from the aligners and any buttons or attachments the orthodontist might have adhered to your teeth to help straighten your smile.

2. Aligner Retrieval Tools

Usually there is a learning curve to learn the smoothest way to get the aligners in and out of your mouth and there are tools available that can make it a lot easier to get the aligners on and off your teeth and to make sure it is positioned properly. Look for one that is made of surgical stainless steel so it is easy to keep clean and will last you a long time.

3. Invisalign Chewies

Chewies are another product that can help you with switching the aligners in and out. You can usually get them 2 in a pack.

4. Floss Picks

Food particles stuck in between your teeth or caked on your aligners can really be embarrassing. And unfortunately they can be more noticeable when you are wearing clear plastic aligners. The whole point of going with clear aligners is to make them not noticeable, but to keep them that way you need to keep them really clean. That is where floss picks come in. They can be really helpful to get rid of those unwanted food particles that inevitable get stuck between your teeth and on the aligners.

5. Travel Oral Hygiene Kit/Storage Case Combo

Probably the most important accessory for your Invisalign braces is a storage case that also doubles as an oral hygiene kit. You are wearing the aligners for 20 to 24 hours and will be taking them in and out at different times of the day so being prepared is key. You need a discrete place to store the aligners when you are not wearing them and you need to also have on hand all your cleaning products and tools because you need to clean not only your teeth and gums every time you take the aligners out, but also the aligners themselves. To have all this in a compact travel kit you can take everywhere will make your life so much easier.

6. Cleansing Towelettes and Sprays

If you are looking for quick ways to clean your aligners and freshen them up, you can buy cleansing towelettes that you can simply wipe your aligners quickly without the need to rinse them out. If you prefer a spray to towelettes, you can get a Invisalign and retainer cleaner spray.

7. Tips for Cleaning Your Aligners

If you do not take proper care of your Invisalign trays then they will start to yellow and develop a foul odor which can be quite embarrassing. Here are some tips for cleaning your aligners:

  • Each morning take your trays out and clean both your teeth and the trays thoroughly. While you were sleeping a lot of bacteria could have built up on the trays so it is important to start the day off right with clean teeth and trays. Make sure you do this every evening as well.
  • Always rinse them when you remove them. To prevent dry saliva and plaque from building up, make sure you rinse your trays every time you take them out of your mouth. You want to avoid creating an inviting environment for bacteria to grow. You can also use a clear anti-bacterial soap to keep your trays clean and clear. Brushing the trays with a soft-bristled toothbrush can also help remove some of the plaque. Even when you are out and about and not in the comfort of your own home, it is important to properly take care of your Invisalign trays.
  • Soak your aligners every day. The best way to make sure your Invisalign trays are as clean as possible is to soak them in either a denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals. After they are finished soaking, use an extra toothbrush that you don’t use for your teeth to brush off any lingering plaque or food particles and then rinse the trays before placing them back in your mouth.
  • Always brush and floss your teeth before putting the trays back in. If you put the trays back in when there are food particles still stuck between your teeth, you will be trapping them inside the trays which could lead to cavities and other dental issues down the road.
  • Don’t leave your trays out in the open air when you are not wearing them. Leaving them exposed like that could lead to more buildup of bacteria while also making it more likely that you will lose them. Keep your case with you at all times just to be on the safe side. If by chance you do leave them out for a while, it is important that your rinse them, soak them and then rinse them again before putting them on again.

Take proper care of your trays and not only will you have a better experience during treatment, you are also protecting your oral health from future issues. Contact Orthodontics Limited today for more information.

Traveling with Invisalign? Here’s What You Should Know

December 8, 2021.

person holding Invisalign clear aligner

The holiday season is officially in full swing! If you live away from home, you may be traveling to visit your loved ones in the coming months. Traveling while undergoing Invisalign treatment may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be that way at all! There are many steps you can take to help you stay on track with your treatment plan. With that in mind, a dentist in Cleburne shares a few ways you can stick with the program.

Pack the Essentials

Don’t forget to prepare a travel kit that contains all your dental care essentials! If you’ve traveled in the past, you probably already have one that includes everything you need for traveling with Invisalign . Regardless, here are some essential items your kit should include:

  • Toothbrush – It’s a good idea to pack multiple toothbrushes in several convenient locations, such as your suitcase, carry-on, and handbag. That way, you always have your toothbrush on hand to clean your teeth after eating or drinking.
  • Dental Floss – You’ll need some dental floss to thoroughly clean between your teeth at least once a day.
  • Mouthwash – Rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash is a great way to eliminate any lingering debris that brushing alone can’t remove.

Stay On Top of Your Oral Hygiene Routine

The holidays may seem like the perfect time to take a break from your day-to-day responsibilities, but that shouldn’t apply to your oral hygiene routine. Slacking off could increase your chances of dental problems and put your smile at risk. Therefore, you must continue to brush your teeth twice a day and floss every night before bed. Make sure you wear your Invisalign aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day as well! You can set a timer to remind you so you don’t fall behind on your progress.

Bring Extra Aligners

Pack an extra set of aligners just in case. That way, you can easily continue your treatment plan while away from home. And if you happen to lose a plastic tray, don’t panic! Get in touch with your dentist or orthodontist and they’ll provide you with instructions on what to do in the meantime.

Make Sure the Tap Water is Safe

Depending on where you’re going, you may need to be careful about the water you’re using. If tap water is considered unsafe to consume, you should avoid using it to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth. Always keep a bottle of safe water on hand just in case you need it!

Visit Your Dentist Before You Depart

Schedule an appointment with your dentist or orthodontist before you depart. They’ll perform an oral examination, monitor your progress, and give you advice to help you stay on top of your treatment plan while away from home. If you have extended travel plans, they can also discuss making adjustments to upcoming appointments.

Don’t forget to follow your Invisalign treatment plan this holiday season. By using the tips outlined above, you can enjoy your vacation without having to worry about ruining your progress!

How to Travel with Invisalign

Remembering all the things you need to pack before a trip can quickly become overwhelming. If you also happen to be in the middle of orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign, figuring out exactly which dental care items to bring is vital for your comfort and compliance.

Your commitment to Invisalign should never prevent you from making plans to travel!

Traveling with Invisalign is perfectly possible as long as you’re willing to put in a bit of planning and preparation ahead of time. As someone who has been through this myself, I would love to share some tips and tricks to help make dealing with Invisalign more comfortable while you’re traveling away from home!

Disclaimer: This post does NOT contain official medical advice. This was written purely for entertainment purposes. The content shared within this article reflects my personal experience as a past Invisalign patient. For your own medical advice in relation to orthodontic treatment, please consult an orthodontist.

My 15-month treatment with Invisalign helped me learn a number of travel tips to assist with making Invisalign pleasant for someone who loves to be on the road. In this post, I’ll share those tips with you!

If you prefer to jump to the packing list, you can.

Table of Contents

SCHEDULE A VISIT TO YOUR ORTHODONTIST BEFORE LEAVING

After beginning Invisalign, even though I had an initial order of 38 aligner trays, I was only given maybe the first 8 or so. I’d wear those trays, return to the office for a check-up, and if everything was tracking properly, they’d send me home with another 8 trays.

Advertisement:

Since each tray needed to be worn for 10 days in my case, that meant I had a 2-3 month window before I’d return. Each patient’s schedule may vary a bit, but I share this information to give you an idea of what to expect in terms of the frequency of visits. Since your teeth movements happen at home when you switch aligners, you go to the orthodontist MUCH LESS FREQUENTLY than you would with traditional braces where every single adjustment happens in their office.

For this reason, I believe Invisalign is far superior to metal braces for travelers.

As long as you pre-schedule those appointments long enough in advance, you can try to plan your trips in between those appointments. That’s what I did and it was never an issue for me. If I was going to be away for more than 10 days, I made sure to take the next aligner tray with me.

Invisalign Tip: Pack extra aligners! I almost always took my next aligner on every trip even if it wasn’t time for it, just in case I broke or lost the current one! In case you stay longer than anticipated, you won’t have to worry.

IS SMILEDIRECTCLUB BETTER SINCE I WOULD NOT NEED ANY OFFICE APPOINTMENTS

Unlike some of the DIY aligner options such as SmileDirectClub, a great reason to get Invisalign specifically is that your orthodontist will be involved in the process! They can guide your treatment from start to finish! Some people prefer to fix their teeth themselves to save money which is understandable, but it’s important to remember that a specialized professional can make sure your teeth are aligned in a healthy manner.

When your Invisalign treatment is supervised by a trained professional, your smile is far more likely to turn out exactly the way you want it to.

In my opinion, the greatest reason of all to see an orthodontist is that in addition to straightening your teeth, an orthodontist can ensure you have a healthy and properly aligned bite. In fact, that was the primary reason I got Invisalign!

Unlike those DIY at-home aligner kits, orthodontists also have the ability to equip your teeth with rubber bands, bonded attachments, and other gadgets to achieve more complex movements!

Invisalign Tip: Mention your trip to your orthodontist! If your treatment is a rather simple one, it never hurts to ask if you could have more aligners all at once so you can travel longer in between appointments.

WHAT TO PACK AND CARRY FOR INVISALIGN WHILE TRAVELING

There are key items that made traveling with Invisalign significantly more comfortable.

In this section, I will share the best things I purchased that made traveling with aligners easier!

INVISALIGN TRAVEL PACKING LIST

Colgate max fresh wisp disposable mini travel toothbrushes.

Colgate Wisp Max Fresh

By far, these were the greatest thing I ordered for traveling with Invisalign. They’re small enough that you can easily store 2-3 in a Ziploc bag and carry them in a pocket/purse.

They have a breath freshener, cleaning bristles, and the other end is a soft dental pick for those hard-to-clean areas.

These were the #1 best investment I made during my treatment. Amazon has a great deal right now for a 4 pack. Since they’re single-use, it’s a great value buy.

DENTEK COMFORT CLEAN SENSITIVE GUMS FLOSS PICKS

DenTek Floss Picks

Made with soft, silky ribbon floss that stretches for a softer feel, these single-use flossers by DenTek are the most comfortable floss option I’ve found for sensitive gums during Invisalign treatment.

With a subtle Mouthwash blast flavoring and fluoride coating, these flossers ensure your mouth is feeling perfectly fresh after having any meal.

Even if your teeth may feel clean after brushing with a toothbrush, they aren’t fully clean without cleaning the spaces between your teeth where food and plaque tend to remain.

These also have a dental pick on the opposite end.

You can order a 3-pack discount set on Amazon.

GRIN TONGUE CLEANER

Grin Tongue Cleaner

Target sells disposable tongue scrapers made from recycled plastic. Despite their small size, they’re very comfortable to use.

Prices are subject to change (especially with inflation…), but recently they were around $3.40 for a package containing 32 scrapers at Target .

And best of all, just like everything else on this list so far, the bottom half can be transformed into a dental pick! 😀

Movemints

One of the most fun things I discovered during Invisalign was Movemints: a special patented sugar-free mint that assists with seating aligners.

They’re an edible alternative to those rubber chewies your orthodontist will probably give you. Plus, they’re spearmint flavored so they make your breath smell nice!

TRAVEL TOOTHBRUSH

Colgate Travel Toothbrush

I found Colgate’s mini travel toothbrushes to be sufficient while out & about, but if you prefer to do a full brushing in a public setting, you can always carry a mini bottle of toothpaste , mouthwash , and a folding travel toothbrush.

EXTRA ALIGNERS & CASES

Invisalign Aligners & Cases

I mentioned this tip earlier, but it’s always a good idea to bring extra aligners ( stored in a carrying case so they aren’t crushed ) when you travel.

At a bare minimum, you should (of course) bring any aligners that you KNOW you will need according to your treatment schedule.

In general, I’d always pack my next (unneeded) aligner as well as the previously completed one, just in case. One time, I cracked an aligner by trying to remove it too quickly. It was the final day for that tray so it was okay, but I was glad I had backup.

I never wanted to find myself without a backup aligner in case something broke or was lost.

RETAINER BRITE

Retainer Brite Cleaning Tablets

In my case, my treatment overlapped with the COVID19 pandemic: a time when mostly everyone was masked up while around one another. The truth is that even though I wanted Invisalign because of how discreet it is, people almost never saw my teeth regardless…

Now the world is improving and people get to finally see each other’s big smiles once again! Using Retainer Brite is smart because it cleans and brightens your aligners with safe, non-abrasive chemicals!

Retainer Brite kills 99% of common odor-causing bacteria and eliminates the cloudy film that can naturally appear on dental appliances.

Drop one Retainer Brite tablet into a cup of warm water, drop your Invisalign trays in, and let it soak for 15 minutes! You will love the results.

TRAVEL WATER BOTTLE

Filtered Travel Water Bottle

The final item on the packing list is a simple water bottle! While not ideal, when you’re really in a pinch, having some water available to rinse your mouth can be a lifesaver.

I have a Brita plastic water filter bottle that I received as a free gift from Brita.

This bottle reduces chlorine with each sip to ensure you enjoy the freshest tasting water. It can even help you save money by eliminating 1,800 single-use plastic water bottles each year on average.

The best part is that the rubberized straw feels just like an Invisalign chewie.

You’re amazing….. I literally never packed any of these things – just wore the trays, took the little case and took them out when I ate! Oh and of course cleaned them with Retainer Brite. The water bottle is a really good one, the amount of times I wished I had water close to hand.

Haha thanks! I tried my best. Water was definitely a lifesaver in a lot of situations!!

6 Travel Tips for Invisalign Patients

travel tips for invisalign red bank dentistry

1. Pack Extra Trays

If your trip is lengthy, you may need several weeks’ worth of aligners so you can change them while you travel. Because you only go home with a handful of trays after every checkup, you may not have what you need to get you through your entire trip and keep up with your Invisalign treatment. Give your dentist as much notice as possible to get your customized supplies ready.

2. Adapt Your Routine

Even if you’re a spontaneous traveler, your Invisalign-covered teeth need as much attention as you can give them. Make sure all the regular tasks are checked off daily:

  • Wear your trays for 20 to 22 hours a day.
  • Keep your case with you at all times.
  • Clean teeth and aligners at least twice a day, ideally more often.

3. Pack Your Bags Carefully

You probably carry an Invisalign kit in your car or backpack so you have oral hygiene supplies at the ready. Now that you’re traveling, you need all the same goodies (toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash) plus new trays to take with you as you head out of town. Make sure you have all the necessary materials in your carry-on luggage if you’re flying and pack an older set of aligners in case you lose or break the current trays on your teeth.

4. Don’t Forget Your Case

That Invisalign case is a must-have for every Invisalign patient every day. When you’re traveling, keep that important case on your list of must-have items. Whether you’re in another country, city, or continent, you need a safe place to store your trays. Make sure there is room in your everyday travel bag or pocket for this important belonging.

5. Keep on Brushing

One of the most important parts of being a good Invisalign patient is keeping up with oral hygiene . It’s easy to let your brushing and flossing slide when you’re on vacation or traveling in general. Try not to let it happen and keep up with all the oral health care you’ve been maintaining. It’s so important to clean your trays and teeth multiple times a day to help Invisalign maintain its clear appearance and help your teeth stay clean too. The last thing you want is to capture bacteria between tooth enamel and snug-fitting Invisalign.

6. Inform Your Dentist

If this is the first time you’ve gone on the road while wearing Invisalign, you’ll want your Red Bank Invisalign provider’s suggestions about how to manage your trays beyond all the travel tips for Invisalign patients provided here. Don’t worry – everyone is a little nervous about moving around the globe with Invisalign successfully in place. Ask all the questions you have, get the reassurance you need, and trust that your treatment can continue as it should whether you’re home sweet home or far away from home.

4 Ways to Help Manage Your Invisalign Treatment While Traveling

November 22, 2020.

Woman standing outside of her car in winter clothing holding a coffee mug

Check in with Your Dentist in Advance

First things first, you should take time to check in with your dentist before you leave for your trip. With a quick call, they can answer any questions or concerns about how to maintain your treatment while you’re gone. If you need any tweaks to your appointment schedule, you can discuss it then. Plus, you can let your dentist know they may be hearing from you if you run into any problems on the road.

Maintain Your Normal Routine

Taking a vacation doesn’t mean taking a vacation from your regular dental hygiene routine. For convenience, pack a small toiletry bag with your Invisalign case, floss, travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash to keep in a personal bag or purse. Whether you’re flying or driving, having everything you need in an easily-accessible bag like this will make your dental care easier to manage. Don’t forget to keep your aligner cleaning products and small disposable cups in your toiletry bag! You should still make sure you’re soaking your Invisalign trays at least once a day.

Pack Your Next Set of Aligners

Most Invisalign patients change their aligners every two weeks for best results. But even if you don’t expect to be gone for more than two weeks, being prepared with your next set of aligners can help minimize stress. If you happen to stay longer than you expected or your current set is damaged, your treatment can stay on track.

Keep a Bottle of Water Nearby

You never know what kind of situations you might fall into while traveling, so it’s best to keep a bottle of water handy at all times. You will probably eat something during your trip. If you don’t have anywhere to stop and brush your teeth, you can swish water around in your mouth to remove any food particles before re-inserting your aligner trays.

Any time you’re traveling with Invisalign aligners, you should always make sure you’re taking care of your teeth the same way you would if you were at home. Wearing your trays for at least 20-22 hours per day and keeping your teeth as clean as possible will help keep your treatment on track no matter where you go. If you do run into any issues or have questions while you’re gone, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist; they’ll be happy to help.

Braces on the Road: How to Travel With Invisalign

by Gonzalesonthego | Dec 22, 2020 | Full-Time RV Living , Health on the Road , RVing with Kids | 0 comments

Braces on the road

There are a lot of things to consider when hitting the road full time. You have to think about how you will make money , how you will get mail , and what kinds of memberships  you’ll invest in to save some money. Adding kids into the mix only adds to the long list of things to consider, and dealing with braces on the road is one of the things that perplexes parents the most.

One of the best ways to go about straightening your teeth while traveling full time? Invisalign is a fantastic option that more and more travelers are choosing. Are you going to travel full time and worried about your invisible braces?

Read on to know how to clean Invisalign and how to take care of Invisalign while on the go!

The foremost important thing is your packing checklist. Here’s an essential checklist for the travel kit on tour with Invisalign.

  • Travel toothbrush
  • Floss or floss picks
  • Pocket-size mouthwash
  • Retainer remover
  • Pain reliever (as first aid)
  • Aligner case
  • Extra aligners

Keep Up Your Good Habits!

You need to wear aligners for at least 22 hours a day. Thus it might seem tedious to remove your aligners while eating out and putting them back again after cleaning. But, it’s important to avoid slips that can hinder your progress.

Thus it is advised to take out a few minutes for your Invisalign each time you eat or drink anything and enjoy your travels without any worry.

Now let us check out some useful tips on how to take care of Invisalign during traveling.

  • Everyone on the Invisalign treatment knows that you need to change the set of aligners in a week or fortnight according to the dentist’s instruction. Sometimes you switch to a new set, or you might need to go back to your previous set of aligners. Take them all with you during traveling so that you can change according to your requirement. Consult your orthodontics before leaving for the trip.
  • It might take a longer time to reach from one spot to another. And if you are an adventure tour enthusiast, you might not get a proper facility to brush everywhere. Don’t stress much on how to clean Invisalign  in such situations. If you don’t get a place or chance to brush correctly and floss your Invisalign, rinse them thoroughly. You can do that with either clean water or mouth wash. That’s why a pocket-sized mouthwash is recommended in your travel kit.
  • In case you are taking a flight to your destination, keep your Invisalign with you in your handbag or cabin bag. As you need to wear them for the maximum time of the day, you must keep them within your reach all the time.
  • Heat is not suitable for Invisalign as it can deform its shape. If you are traveling to a tropical or hot region, keep your aligners in a cool place. Keep them in the refrigerator if required. But don’t make the mistake of taking them in your handbag under the sun.
  • The list of avoidable food items, while you are on your retainers, is mentioned as below:
  • Do not forget to remove retainers before eating or drinking anything. You can only have water with your aligners on. And brush your teeth and retainer before putting them on again. If you can’t brush, at least rinse them well.

Final Word!

So you see! Braces on the road aren’t even necessary. Instead,  travel with Invisalign. Once you know how to take care of Invisalign it’s a cinch. That said, it is advisable to consult your orthodontics before hitting the road full time.

4 tips for traveling with invisalign.

Woman traveling with Invisalign

1. Pack Your Dental Essentials

Create a travel kit containing everything you need to care for your teeth, gums, and aligners while you’re on the road. It’s best to include:

  • Travel Toothbrushes: Consider packing more than one to make it easy to brush your teeth while on the go. Don’t forget to bring a nonabrasive toothpaste.
  • Floss: Even if you’re traveling, you still need to floss between each tooth daily.
  • Mouthwash: An antimicrobial mouthwash will clean areas missed by your toothbrush and floss.
  • Extra Aligners: If you’ll be gone for more than a week, you might need to change your aligners. Be sure to pack the next one in your series.
  • Storage Case: You’ll still need to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day but bring your storage case with you to keep them safe when they aren’t in your mouth.

2. Stick to Your Routine

Although your environment will be different, stick to your usual oral hygiene routine, including brushing twice a day and flossing every night. Be sure to clean your aligners using a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear antibacterial soap to avoid any unnecessary dental complications. Despite any temptations to remove your aligners, only take them out when eating or drinking anything except water. If you don’t wear your aligners for the right amount of time, you can fall behind on your progress.

3. Know Your Water Source

Not all tap water is safe. If it’s not recommended you drink it, you shouldn’t be using it to brush your teeth or clean your aligners. If you’re heading to an area that doesn’t have a safe water source, pack bottled water to avoid getting sick while also ensuring your smile and aligners stay clean.

4. Let Your Dentist Know

Although you don’t require appointments for adjustments, you still need to visit your dentist every few weeks to monitor the movement of your teeth. If you’re going to miss an upcoming appointment, let your dentist know. Depending on how long you’re gone, they may ask you to come into the office before you leave.

With a little preparation, you won’t have to worry about any interruptions to your treatment plan. You can enjoy your travels while continuing to achieve your dream smile.

4 Tips for Traveling During an Invisalign Treatment

March 1, 2021.

Three friends wearing backpacks walking through a train station together

Remembering to pack the right amount of clothing, body care, and hair products can be tough. Many people choose to make a list so they can check off each item as they go. But if you’re in the middle of an orthodontic treatment, dental care items will likely be at the top of your list. Traveling with Invisalign doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are 4 tips to help keep you on track while you’re on the move this holiday season.

Mention Your Trip to Your Dentist

It’s a good idea to speak to your dentist before your trip. With a simple call, they can help calm any worries or answer questions you may have during your trip. If any corrections need to be made to your treatment, you may want to stop in for a visit before you leave.

Bring Your Next Set of Aligners Along for the Trip

In most cases, Invisalign wearers switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks. But even if you only expect to be gone for the weekend, having your next set of aligners ready to use can help minimize the stress of keeping your treatment on track. If your current set gets damaged or you end up staying longer than you expected, you won’t have to worry about any setbacks.

Always Have Bottled Water Nearby

It is very likely that you will eat something at some point during your trip. If you don’t have a way to brush your teeth after eating or drinking, having a bottle of water will definitely come in handy. You can swish some water around in your mouth to remove any food particles before re-inserting your aligner trays. You never know what could happen while traveling, so it’s being prepared is always a good thing.

Keep Up with Your Regular Dental Care Routine

When you have Invisalign, you will likely get into the habit of brushing your teeth after snacks and meals. You may be taking a vacation from work or school, but that doesn’t mean you are taking a vacation from your dental hygiene. Keeping a small toiletry bag with your Invisalign storage case, floss, a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash in a personal bag or purse is a great way to make dental care easy to manage. Don’t forget to pack your aligner tray cleaning products and small disposable cups! You should still be soaking your Invisalign trays at least once a day.

When traveling with Invisalign, it is important to care of your teeth the same way you would if you were at home. You should also be sure to wear your trays for 20-22 hours per day. Following these tips will help keep your treatment progressing on schedule, no matter where you are. If you do encounter problems or have questions while you’re away, don’t hesitate to give your dentist a quick call.

Tips for Traveling With Invisalign

November 5, 2020.

Invisalign aligners in tray

The end of the year often involves traveling to see family and friends or making plans for next year’s vacation sites. Along with taking trips away from home comes the planning and packing process. If you have Invisalign, you have one extra item on your list of essentials to make sure you don’t forget. Keep reading to learn a few ways you can help make traveling with Invisalign easier.

Tips for Traveling with Invisalign

Being in unfamiliar settings can often throw off your routine. It might mean you place your Invisalign trays in a strange spot, or perhaps someone in your shared space moves them. There are a multitude of possibilities that can happen while traveling with Invisalign, so check out these tips that can help you focus on enjoying your holiday rather than fussing with aligners:

Keep Up with Your Normal Oral Hygiene and Cleaning Routine

One of the best ways to maintain normalcy in a different environment or on a different schedule, is to keep up with your regular routine. If you typically take your aligners out at a certain time of day to clean them, try to be diligent about doing so even while you’re away from home. Also make sure that you are placing them in a safe spot, out of the reach of pets or children. It can also be easy to fall out of the habit of the mandatory 22 hours of wear time, but make sure you’re still taking care to wear your trays as long as recommended so that the treatment time is not extended.

Pack Extra Aligners

You never know what might happen, so it’s always good to have an extra set of aligners. If something happens to one of your trays while you’re out of town, your dentist won’t be able to see you right away for a quick replacement. Make sure to ask for an extra set before you leave so that you can be prepared for any possible circumstance that may arise.

Be Mindful of the Tap Water

If you are traveling internationally, there are some countries where it is not advisable or safe to drink the tap water. If this is the case where you are going, make sure to have purified water to rinse your aligners with to keep from getting ill.

Tell Your Dentist About Your Travel Plans

Although your dentist can’t be with you on your trip to fix any issues that may arise with your aligners, letting them know that you’re going to be traveling with your Invisalign trays is still a good idea. They may have some additional suggestions that you hadn’t thought of that can help make the process smoother for you.

Even with Invisalign, you deserve to enjoy your time away from home without having to be concerned about losing or damaging your aligners. Talk to you dentist about how you can best take care of them while you’re traveling.

About the Practice

The team of expert Dentists at Oakbrook Dental & Orthodontics looks forward to helping patients achieve straighter smiles. It is their priority to make sure everyone they treat has the knowledge and tools to get the most out of their investment in Invisalign. If you’re ready to talk about straightening your smile, schedule a consultation online or call (469) 526-4040 .

The Invisalign Kit Essentials Checklist: What to Buy

Home » Invisalign » The Invisalign Kit Essentials Checklist: What to Buy

Invisalign has become a popular alternative to traditional metal braces. Since its development in 1997, these aligners have improved 13 million smiles worldwide , as well as the smiles of 3 million teens. Among the top benefits — they’re clear, removable, and much easier to care for than brackets and wires. They also typically involve fewer office visits and require less treatment time.

However, like braces, Invisalign aligners require proper care to ensure optimal results. Building an Invisalign kit with essential accessories can make the task easier.

Essential Invisalign Accessories for Your Kit

Here are a few of the essential accessories that you should include in your Las Vegas Invisalign kit:

A Storage Case

One of the top benefits of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. While you should wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day, you will need to remove them when you eat , drink, and brush your teeth. A storage case provides a safe place to keep them during those times. Consider a second one to keep on hand for backup.

Cleaning Supplies

Soaking your Invisalign aligners every day helps to keep them clean and invisible. Invisalign makes cleaning crystals for this exact purpose. Alternatively, you can use a denture cleaner. Something to soak your aligners in, such as a water glass or a deep case, should also be part of your kit.

Invisalign Whitening Pen

Tooth discoloration is a common side effect of wearing aligners. Fortunately, you can keep your teeth pearly white during your treatment with an Invisalign whitening pen . This handy tool contains an easy-to-apply whitening gel that helps you combat stains.

Aligner Munchies

When you transition to your next set of aligners, you may notice they feel tight. That can make seating them correctly a bit difficult. You can make the task easier with Invisalign “Munchies” or soft, silicone aligner seaters that you bite down on to get your aligners into place.

Removal Tool

Getting your aligners out can also be challenging, especially when they’re new. A removal tool can help you dislodge them so you can take them out when you want to eat or brush your teeth. You may also find it beneficial if you don’t want to put your fingers in your mouth.

Orthodontic Wax

Invisalign aligners are a thick, thermoplastic material. Although they’re smooth along the outside, the edges of some aligners can have rough edges that may irritate your gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue. Orthodontic wax can help protect sensitive oral tissues in such cases.

OTC Pain Medication

Some discomfort is normal when switching to a new set of aligners. An over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen can help ease your pain as you adjust.

A Travel Pack

A separate on-the-go kit filled with Invisalign essentials will make it easier for you to clean your aligners and your teeth no matter where you are. Some items to include:

  • A storage case
  • Whitening pen
  • Removal tool
  • Orthodontic wax
  • Pain reliever
  • Travel-size oral care products for cleaning your teeth (toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss )

Build Your Invisalign Essentials Kit

If you’re thinking about getting Invisalign or just starting your journey, don’t forget to build an Invisalign kit. The right tools can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth treatment and optimal outcome. Are you interested in Las Vegas Invisalign or looking for additional Invisalign treatment tips? Traveling with Invisalign | What I learned completing Invisalign on the go

This post is designed to share my personal experience of traveling with invisalign. It should not replace professional advice, it is simply my own experience.

As a remote worker, I'm never in one place for long. My home is where is set my pack down for a couple of months before I move on.

I'd started to consider invisalign while in Thailand a few years back, but psyched myself out thinking it couldn't possibly work with my lifestyle. After all, how would I attend appointments? check-ups? collect new sets of trays?

travel kit for invisalign

What is invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth straightening treatment using a series of clear aligners which are changed weekly or bi-weekly depending on your orthodontists recommendations. Each tray is worn between 20-22 hours a day and shifts your teeth little-by-little until treatment is completed.

sunflower field couple roaming vegans

My invisalign journey

I'd never had braces as a kid, I thought I didn't really need them. But into my adult life I started to experience overcrowding and it began to bother me.

In November 2019, I took the plunge. I found an orthodontist in Bangkok (I was based in southern Thailand at this point) who was open to me traveling with invisalign. So I did it.

I carried 36 trays across 4 countries in 6 months - that's more the $3000 worth of invisalign in my pack! I wore each tray 22 hours, only removing to eat, I changed trays every week and completed invisalign in May, 2020.

Is it recommended to travel with invisalign?

In an ideal world, I'm sure doctors would prefer people to avoid excessive travel with invisalign.

Luckily, I didn't lose any trays. However, I lost my invisalign case within a day. If you lose yours, you can get an affordable replacement here .

However, based on my experience, if you can find an orthodontist who is willing to adjust treatment to travel plans, then go for it.

Getting invisalign in Thailand

I was a little hesitant at first about getting invisalign in Thailand. However, everyone at Dentajoy was very professional and helpful. In fact, I felt they were more willing to work with my travel schedule than an Australian dentistry would have been. I was also given their Whatapp number, which they personally responded extremely quickly to each little question I had. All round, I had no issues getting invisalign in Thailand.

The biggest problems of traveling with invisalign

Invisalign is a pain, whether traveling or not. But traveling with invisalign can be frustrating at times.

1. Eating out

I spend a lot of time in Southeast Asia, where eating out is the norm. This constant eating out on roadside stalls and busy night-markets doesn't work well with invisalign.

2. Being outdoors

Unlike back home, my lifestyle abroad involves more time outside, which makes brushing teeth and keeping up with dental hygiene even more difficult.

3. Carrying a small fortune in trays

Normally patients are given a few weeks worth of trays, get a check-up and receive their next bundle. I was given two boxes containing 36 trays. At first this took up a lot of space in my backpack, and I had to be very careful of damaging the trays. Also, losing my pack would have cost me thousands, so I was incredibly conscious of my pack at all times.

4. Goddamn tumeric

I love Indian and Sri Lankan food. During my invisalign treatment, I was based in a small town in Sri Lanka for two months. Almost all the local food there is cooked with tumeric, and turmeric stains. Even with keeping up strict brushing and teeth cleaning, the trays would turn yellow quickly. To counter this, I would travel with these invisalign cleaners .

5. Travel photos

If you're traveling, the chances are there's going to be photos involved. And while invisalign is pretty inconspicuous, it's not completely.

6. Store trays in filtered water

Tap water in third-world countries can discolor trays. When not wearing them, leave them in filtered water not local tap water as this will discolor them.

7. Hard to replace lost items

I lost my invisalign case my first week of starting treatment. As I was overseas and on the go, it was difficult to get a replacement case, unlike at home where you can simply order a replacement invisalign retainer case .

Would I recommend traveling with invisalign?

Every situation is different, but for me traveling with invisalign was mostly fine. As long as you can wear invisalign trays for the recommended time per day, keep up with dental hygiene and keep your stash of trays safe, then there shouldn't be any issues.

No one likes to think about it, but traveling the world comes at a risk. By covering yourself with the right travel insurance, you can enjoy the world without worries.

I recommend World Nomads as my favorite travel insurance provider.
