About WILDERUN’s Epigone: With Epigone, Boston-bred aural imaginauts WILDERUN take a deeper and darker step beyond their expansive, prog-leaning metal scores that so skillfully came together on 2019’s Veil of Imagination. The result is a record that is at once grandiose, complex, sophisticated and unexpectedly human. “This is certainly a “meta” record for me,” states guitarist and vocalist Evan Berry. “It’s the record that has the most to do with the artistic process.” Indeed, the nine-track-long offering: beginning with the haunting acoustic prelude, “Exhaler” and ending with a twenty-minute, four-part epic composition, “Distraction I-IV”, Epigone is nothing short of a journey into expression and ambition. It has all the earmarks that have made WILDERUN a revelation unto themselves.
“This record has a different kind of inner turmoil than Veil,” says bassist and composer Dan Muller. “So much of that album was focused on the past and reminiscing on the progression from childhood to adulthood, and had a brighter, more flowery texture to it. This one is darker, and to me feels more introspective.” Admittedly, the universal pause and the frustration that came with the onset of a global pandemic of 2020 weighed heavily on the writing. “It was a frustrating time,” says Dan. “Things were starting to move in a direction that we had wanted them to for a while. We had signed to Century Media and were playing bigger shows like the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise. Then, suddenly, it felt like everything was ripped away from us. For me, that made it the hardest record we’ve ever had to write.”
Berry describes the arrangement process for Epigone as “solitary”, largely due to the Covid-restricted universe the band found itself in. Ideas were shuttled back and forth between members, and the band frustratingly never had the opportunity to meet as a whole before tracking commenced in early 2021. And with traveling being too risky at the time, Wayne had to do all of his recording and orchestrating out of his home studio in California, while the rest of the band tracked in Syracuse, NY. In spite of that isolation, tracks like the driving “Passenger” speak volumes of WILDERUN’s increasingly canny sonic reach as soaring, cinematic orchestrations flirt with Berry’s death metalized inclinations. According to Berry, even WILDERUN’s flawlessly integrated orchestrations were pushed in new directions. Guitarist and composer Wayne Ingram (who has worked for noted film composer Hans Zimmer’s Bleeding Fingers Company) focused on innovative and challenging compositions while Muller pushed his synth work to create a sense of atmosphere the band’s prior work only hinted at. The album’s mix by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Arch Enemy) sets the album’s standard to masterpiece proportions.
“There’s always a deep appreciation for the vibe and the atmosphere of folk and the heaviness of metal,” says Dan, “I think for us it comes down to this organic, esoteric atmosphere that incorporates a lot of different things.” That aesthetic is most pronounced when it comes to some of the album’s actual instrumentation. “This is probably the biggest number of folk instruments we’ve ever had on a record,” notes Dan. “Sometimes it’s prominent. Sometimes it’s layered. There’s fewer keys and more acoustic passages. It’s a little more earthy and a little less theater.”
When it comes to scoring soundtracks for the theater of the mind, WILDERUN isn’t merely pushing boundaries, they’re writing sublime symphonies and setting the standard in the process. “At its core, WILDERUN is escapist, transformative,” says Dan. “Our criteria is very simple: As a listener, does it put me in a place that’s better than where I am now? Even though the music and lyrics are very introspective, this could be anyone’s story.”
WILDERUN is Evan Anderson Berry (vocals, guitars, piano) , Dan Müller (bass, synths, orchestrations) , Jon Teachey (drums) and Wayne Ingram (orchestrations, lead guitar, folk).

Wilderun – Epigone (Album Review)
Free flowing thoughts beget elaborate structures.
The world can change a great deal over the course of a decade, and the same often holds true for bands that have stuck it out for as long. Yet this could be seen as an understatement when considering the wild evolutionary leaps that Bostonian folk metal masters turned progressive metal trustees Wilderun over the course of ten years as a fully forged band and four highly impressive LPs to their name. Though originally conceived in 2008 by vocal helmsman and multi-instrumentalist Evan Berry , it would be the release of their 2012 debut album “Olden Tales & Deathly Trails” that would establish them as New England’s most interesting response to the folk metal craze spearheaded by the likes of Ensiferum and Turisas . But the passage of time has seen this highly adept quartet (which was briefly a quintet in the latter 2010s) embark on a very different stylistic path, and their latest full length studio expedition “Epigone” underscores that fact almost to a fault.
For those who might not have checked in with this New England powerhouse’s studio output since the early 2010s, the days of erecting elaborate arrangements out of America folk tunes in a manner comparable to Wuthering Heights and Tyr are all but over. In its stead is something that is equally as extravagant, but far more nuanced in its approach, often emerging in a formula that is quite drawn out, multifaceted and asymmetrical in character. Obvious comparisons to the likes of extreme progressive metal proponents such as Persefone and Opeth become difficult to avoid given the continued presence of melodic death metal elements in the equation, though in total these songs are a bit less stylistically distinct, often employing dense ambient keyboard, jazz ballad and trance music elements to bolster the high-impact moments. The result is something that not be accessible or recognizable to those who remember the days when this outfit toured the east coast with Aether Realm .
Though a far cry from where this band began, “Epigone” is by no means an album that contradicts the expansive folk metal demeanor of Wilderun ’s earlier offerings. If anything, this is the sort of album that one would expect from a band that began with a progressive mindset and has simply taken it closer to its logical conclusion. One might even be tempted to say that this album marks where this quartet shifted from being a folk metal band that thought in progressive terms to a progressive band that uses the folk sound as a point of distinction. There may be less in the way of overt hooks, and the general scheme of each song leans a bit more towards a jazzy jam band template, but between the chaotic moments and the grandiose instrumental backdrop it’s an album that will still appeal to all of their established fan base while also likely roping in a lot of Opeth fans. It’ll be interesting to see where this Massachusetts outfit goes next, but if this extended opus is any indication, the sky is the limit.

Great review of a great album but slight amendment in that Joe Gettler handled the lead guitar duties on this album before departing the band. Wayne is on lead guitar going forward. Hope that helps. I discovered this band after Veil of Imagination and have loved them since. Hearing how their sound has progressed over just 4 albums is inspiring.
Kenneth Petty has been granted permission to travel internationally to support his wife Nicki Minaj on her Pink Friday World Tour while on probation for failing to register as a sex offender.
On Tuesday, April 16, United States District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald granted Petty, 46, permission to travel internationally from April 17 to July 14, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
"[Petty] shall keep his probation officer updated with the details of his travel itinerary as needed. At the conclusion of the travel, [Petty] must return to Los Angeles and must check in with his probation officer upon returning," the filing states. "Mr. Petty must also provide an itinerary to his probation officer prior to travel and follow all directives of the probation officer."
Petty's lawyer, Michael Goldstein, told PEOPLE in a statement: “The order granted by the court speaks for itself.”
Petty requested the exception on Monday, April 15 and said it was to "travel out of the country with his family for his wife's tour and her professional purposes."
"[Petty] and [Minaj] believe [Petty] is necessary to accompany the family on the tour for various purposes, including childcare," the filing reads, adding that the travel schedule would include several countries including Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Austria, Ireland, Switzerland and Romania.
The filing also noted that the Government was notified about the request and took "no position" — and his probation officer had "no objections."

Minaj, 41, embarked on her Pink Friday World Tour on March 1 in Oakland, Calif.. She is touring in support of her most recent studio album Pink Friday 2 . On Wednesday, April 17, the "Starships" singer was slated to perform in Canada in Montreal, Québec.
Petty's request to travel internationally comes after years of legal trouble. In April 1995, he was convicted of attempted rape in the first degree for an assault the previous year of a then-16-year-old girl.
He served four years in jail for the assault and was listed as a level two registered sex offender in New York.
Then, he was arrested again in March 2020 because he failed to register as a sex offender when he moved from Miami to California. According to records obtained by PEOPLE, he originally pled guilty and posted $100,000 bail. Then, in September 2021, he pled guilty during a virtual hearing and faced up to 10 years of prison.
In July 2022, Petty was sentenced to a year of house arrest and three years of probation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, plus a $55,000 fine.
In January of this year, Petty and Minaj made headlines after fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion allegedly referenced Petty's status as a level 2 sex offender on her track "Hiss." (Minaj and Megan have had an alleged falling out since collaborating on “Hot Girl Summer" in 2019.)
Minaj first sparked marriage rumors with Petty in March 2019. Then, in October of that year, she confirmed she was married woman with an Instagram post . "Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty 10*21*19," she captioned a video of some "bride" and "groom" swag, also revealing she hyphenated her last name.

Masters 2024: Prize money payouts at Augusta National
I t says something about what it means to compete in the Masters that players aren’t thinking twice about the fact they have no idea what the prize money payouts were this week at Augusta National before teeing off in the opening round. Club officials don’t officially announce the purse until after a cut is made in the tournament. Frankly, the chance to win a green jacket, a spot in the Champions Locker Room and a lifetime exemption into the major are enough reward to make it worth everybody’s while.
That said, the uncertainty was ended on Saturday when the club announced this year’s prize money payout. For the third straight year, the overall purse at the Masters increased, growing to $20 million with Sunday's runaway winner, Scottie Scheffler, earning $3.6 million. This brings it in line with the $20 million purses offered in the PGA Tour’s signature events as well as the $20 million paydays being played for individually on the LIV Golf circuit.
RELATED: A brief history of the Masters prize money payout
This year’s prize payout is a bump from the $18 million the Masters offered in 2023, and up from $15 million in 2022. Amazingly, too, it was only three years ago that the overall purse was just $12 million. That’s a 66-percent increase in just three years’ time.
The Masters now matches the U.S. Open as the top paying men’s major championship, with the USGA also paying $20 million in prize money during last year’s championship at LACC. The PGA Championship bumped up its purse last year at Oak Hill to $17.5 million and the Open Championship paid $16.5 million at Royal Liverpool in 2023. All the majors are currently dwarfed by the Players Championship, which paid out $25 million in March with winner Scottie Scheffler earning $4.5 million.
Below is how much will be paid out to everybody who made the cut this week at Augusta National.

Scottie Scheffler seeking RBC Heritage win with top players trying to close gap
Change Text Size
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Scottie Scheffler isn’t much of a celebrator. He famously spent the week after his 2022 Masters victory going to The Home Depot, buying lawn equipment and cleaning his backyard for four days straight.
So it was a surprise when photos of Scheffler gleefully hanging at a Dallas bar in his green jacket surfaced late Sunday, hours after his second Masters win.
“I don't remember who suggested it, but it seemed like a good idea, and when Meredith picked us up at the airport, it still seemed like a good idea,” Scheffler said. “Meredith was down, so we went for probably 20 minutes and went home.”
Twenty minutes and done. That’s it.
Scheffler isn’t quite a party animal yet, but it’s a start. He didn’t have time to relish the victory even if he wanted to. It’s back to business. After decompressing with family and friends Monday and Tuesday, Scheffler was back bright and early, prepping for the RBC Heritage on Wednesday. He played the back nine of Harbour Town Golf Links and spent the afternoon working on his putting with coach Phil Kenyon. He admitted he’s “tired,” but don’t expect that to affect his game much this week in Hilton Head. He has no intention of mailing it in.
“I left my pregnant wife at home to come here and play in a golf tournament. I am here to play and hopefully play well. I'm not here just for fun,” Scheffler said.
Scottie Scheffler opens up about support from wife, Meredith
The rest of the field may wish he was. How much of an advantage Scheffler holds over the rest of the field has been the talk of the week at Harbour Town. Ludvig Åberg, who finished runner-up to Scheffler at Augusta National, admitted there’s a sizable gap. So did Wyndham Clark, who was second to Scheffler at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass. Max Homa took it to another level, calling Scheffler “one of the best players I think we'll ever see."
Players talk about Scottie Scheffler's dominating season
“Scottie is tremendously talented and a hard worker and sadly, a better person. I wish I could hate him,” Homa said with a laugh. “But it's not utterly shocking what he does. He just does it over and over and over again. That's amazing. I feel like he almost makes it seem very realistic that we should do that.”
Right now, it’s realistic for only one man.
Scheffler has twice as many FedExCup points as Wyndham Clark, who is No. 2 in the standings. Scheffler has already outpaced his 2022-23 season-long points total, achieving in nine events what it took him 20 events to do a year ago. He is far and away the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking, with a larger margin over No. 2 than any No. 1 has had since Tiger Woods in 2009.
He’s the barometer, plain and simple. That consensus had firmly formed as the top players cycled through the RBC Heritage media center until Scheffler arrived.
“How big of a gap do you feel there is?” a reporter asked.
“I don't really spend much time thinking about that kind of stuff,” Scheffler said. “You know, I won the tournament last week and now we're here and it's Wednesday and we're all even par again. It seems like to me in my head that everything starts over each week, so it doesn't matter what I'm ranked going into the week.”
Of course, that is true. But it’s not how it feels for everyone else. Scheffler has not shot a round over par yet this year. He leads the TOUR in birdie average and bogey avoidance. Just one player has beaten him in his last four starts. When he tees off Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with Jordan Spieth, Scheffler will be the favorite to win his fourth event in five starts, Masters hangover be damned.
Perhaps that’s the benefit of being at the top. There’s no need to think. As Rory McIlroy said at the Masters, when you’re on, you’re thinking about nothing – not about the golf swing and not about where the competition is or what they are doing. The rest of the PGA TOUR isn’t afforded that clarity. They’re left to brainstorm how to close the gap.
“I think everyone looks at themselves in the mirror and goes, ‘What do I need to get better at?” Clark said. “Because you feel like you're playing good golf and you're not beating him.”
“I'm sure the guys felt the same way when Tiger was winning every tournament that he stepped foot on,” Brian Harman said. “It feels like right now that if Scottie shows up with anything above a B game he's probably going to be right there.”
Gordon Sargent, former national champion golfer, returning to Vanderbilt for senior season
Gordon Sargent , the 2022 NCAA national champion and 2023 SEC Golfer of the Year, is returning to Vanderbilt for his senior season instead of turning professional, he announced Thursday .
"It's been an honor to represent this university alongside my teammates and coaches, and I look forward to continuing to compete − and further my education − at this amazing place that has given so much to me," Sargent said in a statement posted to his social media accounts. "I would like to thank everyone who supported me on this journey and I'm excited for my senior year at Vanderbilt."
Sargent won the individual national championship as a freshman in 2022, which allowed him to compete in The Masters during his sophomore year in 2023. Sargent's participation in the PGA Tour U Accelerated program would have allowed him to earn a PGA Tour card and turn professional after the conclusion of the 2024 season. Instead, however, he will return in 2025.
Nick Dunlap, a sophomore golfer at Alabama, turned professional in January after becoming the first amateur in over three decades to win a PGA Tour event. Caleb Surratt, a sophomore at Tennessee who won the SEC individual championship in 2023, also turned professional in January with LIV Golf.
Sargent is the No. 1-ranked amateur in the World Amateur Golf Rankings . Four of his teammates − Jackson Van Paris, William Moll, Cole Sherwood and Matthew Riedel − are also in the top 20. The Commodores' team is currently ranked No. 3 in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll.
