UW-La Crosse offers curbside campus tour

A member of UW-La Crosse Admissions meets visitors at the curbside to provide a folder of information about UWL and a map featuring QR codes to begin their own self-guided tour of campus with audio.

QR codes at popular tour stops provide prospective students and families a self-guided experience

Curbside pickup in the age of COVID-19 is nothing out of the ordinary. From groceries to restaurant takeout, finding service at the curb is the new norm. Now curbside pickup has come to college campus recruiting.

UW-La Crosse Admissions recently rolled out a curbside pickup option, allowing prospective students and families to arrive at the curb to begin their own, self-guided campus tour by tapping into audio recordings at popular tour stops.

An Admissions counselor greets visitors at their car, providing a folder of information about UWL and a map featuring QR codes. Using a smartphone, the codes connect visitors to audio recordings describing various campus spots, such as Hoeschler Tower and Prairie Springs Science Center.

“Our Admissions Office is working hard to provide new options so prospective students and their families can still learn about UWL and hear about the many opportunities on campus,” says Corey Sjoquist, UWL director of Admissions. “We know a lot of students who choose UWL say they just felt at home when they toured campus, so I’m glad we can provide different options.”

The Admissions Office is also providing in-person information sessions with tours of campus, a virtual “facts and furious” session for 30 minutes every Friday, as well as individual virtual appointments with Admissions staff.

The curbside tour is offered from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and is outdoors only. Curbside and other Admissions visits require registration. Learn more at  https://www.uwlax.edu/admissions/explore/visit-us/  or by calling Admissions at 608.785.8939.

No person will be denied admission to the university or to any of its programs or activities (either academic or non-academic, curricular or extracurricular) because of gender, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, disability, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital or parental status, or relationship to employees of this university.

Visiting the campus

The Admissions Office provides several visit opportunities including campus tours, Admissions Information Sessions, Campus Close-Ups, and individual appointments for prospective first year, transfer, graduate, and international students.

Tours of the campus are conducted Monday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. when school is in session. Summer term tours are at 11:00 a.m. only. All scheduled 75-minute walking tours originate from the Admissions Office in the Student Union.

Admissions Information Sessions are one-hour presentations by an admissions counselor designed to provide an overview of UWL and the first year admissions process. These sessions are followed by a 75-minute walking tour of campus, led by a member of the Vanguard organization. Admissions Information Sessions are available on selected dates during the fall and spring semesters and daily in July and August.

Campus Close-Ups are held five times during the academic year. Campus Close-Ups provide prospective first year students and families the opportunity to learn more about UW-La Crosse, including our academic programs, financial aid, and the admissions process. Members of the Vanguard organization lead a panel discussion about campus life, and the day concludes with a 75-minute walking tour of campus led by a current student. The only cost for attending Campus Close-Up is lunch. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m.

Individual appointments with admissions counselors are available from September through June and are designed for prospective first year students who are unable to attend an Admissions Information Session or a Campus Close-Up.

Individual appointments with a transfer admissions counselor are recommended for transfer students who have not yet applied for admission. The appointment will include information about the application process and admission guidelines. Please note: Admitted transfer students who have questions regarding registration and academic advising are encouraged to contact the dean's office of the college to which they are assigned.

For more visit information, please explore the Visit Us section of the Admissions website. If you have questions, please email [email protected] or call the Admissions Office at 608.785.8939.

Professor Roberts is an amazing professor and makes it known that she cares about her students. She is very supportive of student-athletes and has been to some of my games as well as other student-athlete's games. She is responsive, empathetic, determined, and supportive, amongst numerous other words. Professor Roberts is not only invested in her job, but she is invested in her students. She makes relationships with her students that she fosters not only throughout the semester but throughout our time at UW-La Crosse. Professor Roberts provided a very understanding classroom setting and I felt I could share anything I wanted to and express the way I was feeling if I wanted. As an aspiring teacher, she provides me with an example of how even the little things we do can have a large impact on our student's mental health and well-being. VP Harris celebrates new staffing rules for nursing homes during La Crosse visit

Biden administration leaders say minimum staffing levels, increased pay for home care providers will lead to better patient care

uw la crosse dorm tour

Vice President Kamala Harris met with certified nurse aides and labor union leaders in La Crosse to celebrate new federal rules for long-term care facilities and at-home services.

Harris hosted a roundtable at the Hmoob Cultural & Community Agency on Monday, speaking with state and national members of labor union SEIU and the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The federal agency finalized a rule on Monday that establishes minimum staffing levels for nurses and nurse aides at facilities that receive federal funding. It also requires long-term care facilities to have a registered nurse onsite at all times.

Stay informed on the latest news

Sign up for WPR’s email newsletter.

At the event, Harris said roughly 75 percent of federally-funded nursing homes are understaffed, and that has an impact on patient care.

“It means that there may be no one available to help them out of bed,” she said. “It means there may be no one available when they fall. It means that they will receive less medical attention because the care workers in that facility are going from room to room, resident to resident.”

uw la crosse dorm tour

CMS also finalized a rule requiring at least 80 percent of Medicaid payments for home care services go to workers’ wages. Harris said the change will help raise wages for direct care workers, which will lead to less staff turnover and higher quality of care.

“This is about dignity,” she said. “It’s about the dignity that we as a society owe to those in particular who care for the least of these.”

CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure said at the event that the new requirements were based on feedback from thousands of clinicians, health care workers and patients. She said staff reported feeling pressure to leave for service industry jobs, “where they could earn higher wages without the emotional and physical demands of nursing home care.”

Lisa Briggs, a Milwaukee CNA who has worked for 28 years, was one of the SEIU members who spoke with Harris on Monday. She said there have been times when her facility was so understaffed that there were only two workers on a floor.

uw la crosse dorm tour

Briggs said it’s frustrating for both the workers and the residents of long-term care facilities. She remembered one person she cared for who loved to walk.

“When we were short staffed, we couldn’t walk her, so then she’d be real frustrated,” she said. “I’d be like, ‘I’m gonna do it tomorrow. I promise, I promise’. And you know, sometimes it happened, sometimes it didn’t.”

Aryanna Arnone-White, a CNA from Madison, told Harris that being short staffed takes a toll on care workers, and it makes it hard to provide the personal interactions patients need.

“You’re there through their happy times, their bad times, when no one comes to visit them on holidays or birthdays,” White said. “You are the one that is there to be able to share those moments with them.”

Wisconsin GOP voice skepticism about new requirements

Nursing home industry leaders in Wisconsin have previously voiced concerns about their ability to meet new standards after what they describe as years of workforce challenges. Kathryn Brod, CEO of Leading Age Wisconsin, said in February that her organization doesn’t “believe that one size fits all staffing ratios guarantee quality.”

Wisconsin Republicans echoed some of this skepticism about the new requirements during a call with reporters on Monday.

Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson told reporters that enforcing the rule would mean more federal spending at a time when the federal deficit is more than $1 trillion.

“From my standpoint, I’m not a fan of the federal government. I think it causes or exacerbates more problems than it solves,” said Johnson, adding that he would support state and local solutions to the issue instead.

During her visit to La Crosse, Harris also hosted a campaign event to highlight her and President Joe Biden’s commitment to protecting reproductive health care.

It’s the second time Harris has visited the state to talk about abortion access this year. She kicked off the White House’s official Fight for Reproductive Freedom tour during an event in Waukesha County in January. The vice president also visited Madison in March to announce a new federal apprenticeship program.

Harris told supporters at the La Crosse Center that after speaking about the issue across the country, she believes “the majority of us as Americans do have empathy.”

“What I’m finding is that more and more people will openly agree that one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling her what to do with her body,” she said.

No longer the kid, Ty Majeski is as good a teacher as a young short-track racer could want

uw la crosse dorm tour

SLINGER – “Old” is relative.

In some ways, it does seem as though Ty Majeski has been around the Wisconsin, Midwest and national super late model scene for quite a while. He just started his 12 th season with the same group from the La Crosse area.

The kid from Seymour will turn 30 this August.

“I don’t feel like I’m the old guy, but I am,” Majeski said. “Probably the veteran. When you’re racing guys half your age, I think that classifies you.”

The veteran put a hurting on competition young and old Sunday, winning the 100-lap ASA Midwest Tour season-opening Jerry “Bear” Priesgen Memorial at Slinger Speedway by more than six seconds.

Ty Fredrickson, the impressive 15-year-old Midwest Tour rookie to whom Majeski alluded, didn’t challenge a week after scoring an impressive victory at Dells Raceway Park, getting into several tangles and falling out early in 21 st .

Still, youth was well represented with Max Kahler, 21, finishing second and Luke Fenhaus, 20, in third. Both have talked about watching Majeski race while they were growing up.

“I used to be those 15-year-olds,” said Kahler, a finalist in the Kulwicki Driver Development Program, nine years after Majeski won the first.

“I’m not an old guy, but I’m one of the older young guys for sure. It’s kind of hard to believe Ty is that old. … But hopefully we’ll be winning as many races when I’m 30.”

Majeski’s super late model victory total includes three Slinger Nationals, 35 on the Midwest Tour plus five championships, and all the major races of that type around the country. The biggest, the Snowball Derby, he’s won twice. Majeski also has three NASCAR truck victories.

“You always learn from people, even if they’re not (directly) helping you, just racing against other guys, the veterans – I’ve been able to travel all across the country, race different people, experience different racetracks and be in a lot of different scenarios,” Majeski said. “And you learn from those different scenarios you’re in.

“In every race I run, I learn something, good or bad. All the years of racing really good racers, whether it be in the South or in the Midwest, you always take something and remember it and be better next time.”

Which brings us back to Sunday.

Kahler started on the pole after the 12 fastest qualifiers were inverted and led the first 21 laps. Majeski got past on a restart, and from there Kahler just tried to glean what he could on the tricky quarter-mile track.

“After that final restart in that race, he got clear of me, I got down and followed him for 10-15 laps and then he just set sail,” Kahler said. “Then toward the end, everyone was the same pace, and he just seemed to have something left. I’d like to think he saved something. But he just figured something out and was able to drive a lot better than the rest of us.

“Whether that be my driving or the car, either one, both combined will have to be better than (Majeski) hopefully at the end of the day.”

Majeski, who started fourth, is known for being strong on restarts, so Kahler had a good teacher, just like the veterans from whom the winner learned.

If wisdom comes with age, then Majeski is wise enough to know that his learning on the racetrack will continue for as long he straps in a car. Like Kahler, Majeski and crew chief Toby Nuttleman added to their base of knowledge Sunday, too.

“Anytime you win a race like this, everybody else is going to be getting better next week,” Majeski said. “It’s always evolving, and it’s hard to continually win races. It just is. Just thinking of how far our cars and me and Toby have come and our entire team in the last 11 years is just crazy how far we’ve all come on all facets of our program. You have to keep evolving with the sport.

“Racing evolves very, very quickly and it’s very humbling very quickly at times. Always got to keep your nose down, try to get better. I feel like we could get maybe a little better today. I know it maybe doesn’t look like that, but you have to keep getting better, right? When you get content, that’s when you’re going to get beat.”
