The Class 220 Voyager are a class of diesel-electric high-speed multiple-unit trains built by Bombardier Transportation in 2000 and 2001.

They were introduced in 2001 to replace the 20-year-old Intercity 125 and Class 47 fleets operating on the Cross Country Route for train operating company Virgin Trains . [1]

Technical details [ ]

All coaches are equipped with a Cummins QSK19 diesel engine of Template:Convert/hp at 1800 rpm . These power a generator which supplies current to motors driving two axles per coach, [2] with one axle per bogie powered. [3] [4]

Voyagers have both air and rheostatic brakes . They are fitted with Dellner couplers , like the Class 390 Pendolino electric trains used by Virgin West Coast meaning they can be coupled in the event of a failure. As the computer hardware, software and electrical systems are not fully compatible they are not coupled in normal service. [ citation needed ] 220s and 221s can also be easily assisted by Dellner fitted Class 57s (Thunderbirds) in the event of a failure. By use of adaptive couplings a failed 220 or 221 can also be assisted by any air braked locomotive such as a Class 37 , 47 or 66 or even a HST .

The Class 220s and closely related Class 222s have B5005 bogies [5] [3] which are distinctive as they are of inside frame design and hence the axles are supported by bearings behind the wheels, meaning the outside face of the wheel is visible. The related Class 221 Super Voyager has outside frame bogies and hence have a more conventional appearance.

The Class 220s operate in four coach sets with a carriage mass of between 45 and 48 tonnes and a total train weight of 185.6 tonnes, a top speed of 125 mph ( Template:Convert/outsep ) and a maximum range of approximately Template:Convert/mi between each refuelling. Their route availability is very good being RA 2 [2] - in part due to the lightweight bogie design.

All Voyagers are maintained at the dedicated Central Rivers TMD near Burton-on-Trent .

Technical problems and incidents [ ]

The roof mounted resistors for the rheostatic (dynamic) brakes have caused a number of incidents: In one incident, a small piece of wood from a tree had become lodged in these grids, which started a fire on the roof of the train as it stopped in Banbury railway station . [ citation needed ]

Units have also been stopped due to waves breaking over the sea wall at Dawlish in storm conditions and inundating the resistor banks, causing the control software to shut down the whole train. [6] This problem was fixed by an upgrade to the control software. [7]

There were a number of exhaust fires on the Voyager class during 2005–2006 due to incorrect fitting of equipment during overhauls. Fires occurred at Starcross (Class 221), Newcastle and on 19 January 2006 at Congleton . [8]

On 14 March 2008, 220 012, forming a service to Derby , caught fire at Banbury . [9] [10] This fire was caused by a bird getting caught under one of the hot brake resistors on the roof of the train. Although damage was superficial to the train, once the fire brigade had been called, procedures called for the train to be taken out of service for inspection.

Formation and passenger facilities [ ]

Two British Rail Class 220 units operated by CrossCountry coupling to form a longer train

Class 220s operate in four carriage sets. They are air-conditioned throughout, with powered doors. The coaches are fitted with power sockets for laptop computers and mobile phone charging, toilet facilities for disabled people and storage facilities for bicycles are provided.

They provide 26 seats in 2+1 formation in first class and 174 seats in 2+2 formation in standard class.

The formation of a four-car Class 220 is as follows: [11]

 • Coach A - 26 seats - First Class with disabled area and driving cab
 • Coach C - 66 seats - Standard Class
 • Coach D - 66 seats - Standard Class with large luggage area and reservable space for three bikes
 • Coach F - 42 seats - Standard Class (Quiet Zone) with disabled area, catering base and driving cab.

CrossCountry Trains have finished updating the interior layout of all its 220 and 221 sets; their aim is to increase seating capacity, in line with their commitments to the franchise agreements, as well as provide an at-seat trolley service for refreshments instead of a shop. Their research had shown that the shop was not making as good a turnover as hoped due to the fact a lot of people prefer not to leave their seats to get refreshments; they feared either losing their seat or having their belongings stolen when away. It is worth pointing out that in Virgin Trains unsuccessful franchise bid they also cited removal of the shop from 220s and 221s as a way of trying to improve seating capacity . [ citation needed ]

The interior renovation involved the removal of the shop from coach D and the conversion of the stowage area in coach F to a catering storage area where there is now a fridge, food storage and a space for an on-board trolley to be stored. Bicycle storage has been moved to coach D where the shop was. It can now store three bicycles instead of four.

The Class 220s have been criticised for a number of shortcomings:

 • Increased noise and vibration when compared to the non-powered Mark 2 and Mark 3 coaching stock they replaced due to the underfloor diesel engines.
 • As the profile of the bodyshells is designed to allow clearance for tilting (although the Class 220s do not tilt, they use the same shell as the Class 221), the interior space is reduced when compared with conventional carriages.
 • Initial problems with smells from the toilets being conducted into the carriages [ citation needed ] - this was due to the close proximity of the sewage tank outlet and other components. The exhaust system runs past the side of the toilet tank, heating up the waste producing gasses which are in turn passed through the H Vac system sending the smells through the coaches. Template:Clarify
 • The four car sets are typically shorter than the trains they replaced - despite more frequent running overcrowding is a problem.
 • There is little to no space to store large luggage items or bikes.
 • Most seating is in 'airline' configuration, with pull-down trays which are too small to use a laptop on, meaning Voyagers are unsuitable for business travellers [the common four-car version of the train only has six tables to work at, in the whole Standard Class part of the train]

Operation [ ]

Class 220 in Virgin Trains livery in 2006

Virgin Trains were the sole operator of Class 220 Voyager trains when they were introduced in 2001.

When the CrossCountry was awarded the Cross Country Route rail franchise which began on 11 November 2007, the Voyager fleet was shared between Virgin Trains and CrossCountry.

From 8 December 2007, CrossCountry became the sole operator of Class 220 units.

There are 34 Class 220 Voyager trains, numbered 220 001–220 034.

Virgin Trains named all the Class 220 Voyagers after places that they serve or companies that have relations with Virgin Trains.

When the Class 220s were transferred to the new operator CrossCountry , all the names were removed. All Class 220 Voyagers are now in CrossCountry livery. [13]

British Rail Class 220

The British Rail Class 220 Voyager is a class of diesel-electric high-speed multiple unit passenger trains built in Belgium by Bombardier Transportation in 2000 and 2001. They were introduced in 2001 to replace the 20-year-old InterCity 125 and almost 40-year-old Class 47 -hauled Mark 2 fleets operating on the Cross Country Route . They were initially operated by Virgin CrossCountry and since 2007 have been operated by CrossCountry . [8]

All coaches are equipped with a Cummins QSK19 diesel engine of 559 kW (750 hp ) at 1,800 rpm . These power a generator which supplies current to motors driving two axles per coach, [9] with one axle per bogie powered. [2] [10]

Voyagers have both air and rheostatic brakes . They are fitted with Dellner couplers , like the Class 222 operated by East Midlands Railway and the Class 390 Pendolino electric trains used by Avanti West Coast , meaning they can be coupled in rescue/recovery mode (air brake only) in the event of a failure. 220s and 221s can also be easily assisted by Dellner fitted Class 57s (Thunderbirds) in the event of a failure. By use of adaptor couplings a failed 220 or 221 can also be assisted by any air braked locomotive such as a Class 37 , Class 47 or Class 66 or even an HST .

The Class 220s and closely related Class 222s have B5005 bogies , [3] [2] which are distinctive as they are of inside-frame design and so the axles are supported by bearings behind the wheels, meaning the outside face of the wheel is visible. The related tilting Class 221 Super Voyager has outside-frame bogies and hence a more conventional appearance.

The Class 220s operate in four-coach sets with a carriage mass of between 45 and 48 tonnes and a total train weight of 185.6 tonnes, a top speed of 125 mph (200 km/h) , and a maximum range of approximately 1,350 miles (2,170 km) between each refuelling. Their route availability is very good being RA 2 [9] - in part due to the lightweight bogie design.

Class 220 units are fitted with an AB Hoses variable rate sanding system.

All Voyagers are maintained at the dedicated Central Rivers TMD near Burton-on-Trent .

Units have sometimes been stopped by salt water, when storm-driven waves broke over the train at Dawlish in south Devon and inundated the resistor banks, causing the control software to shut down. [11] This problem was fixed by an upgrade to the control software. [12]

There were a number of exhaust fires on the Voyager class during 2005 – 2006 due to incorrect fitting of equipment during overhauls. Fires occurred at Starcross (Class 221), Newcastle, and on 19 January 2006 at Congleton . [13]

On 26 May 2006, a passenger was murdered aboard unit 220005 as it approached Oxenholme whilst working the Glasgow to Paignton service. [14]

On 14 March 2008, unit 220012, forming a service to Derby , had a roof fire at Banbury . [15] [16] This fire was caused by a bird getting caught under one of the hot brake resistors on the roof of the train. Damage to the train was not serious and it was repaired and returned to service.

Class 220s operate in four-coach sets. These trains, unlike the older trains they replaced, feature electronic information displays on the exterior walls showing the train number, the departure time, the coach, the train's destination, and the next station. This is also a feature of the Class 221 and Class 222 trains (the Class 390 trains also have such electronic information displays, but in the doors). They are air-conditioned throughout, with powered doors. The coaches are fitted with power sockets for laptop computers and mobile phone charging. Toilet facilities for disabled people and storage facilities for bicycles are provided.

They provide 26 seats in 2+1 formation in first class and 174 seats in 2+2 formation in standard class.

The formation of a four-car Class 220 is as follows: [4]

 • 604XX - Coach A - 26 seats - First class with disabled area, train manager office, first class catering area, and driving cab. Toilet.
 • 602XX - Coach C - 66 seats - Standard class. Toilet.
 • 607XX - Coach D - 66 seats - Standard class with large luggage area and reservable space for three bikes. No toilet.
 • 603XX - Coach F - 42 seats - Standard class with disabled area, catering base, and driving cab. Toilet.

There is no coach B on the four-car class 220; it exists on the five-car Class 221 and is usually a coach which holds no reservations. This aids short-term fleet changes, for example if a Class 220 is running in a diagram that usually has a Class 221, then the loss of a coach will not affect the reservation system, as they will all still be allocated.

CrossCountry has finished updating the interior layout of all its 220 and 221 sets. The interior renovation involved the removal of the shop from coach D and the conversion of the stowage area in coach F to a catering storage area where there is now a fridge, food storage, and a space for an on-board trolley to be stored. Bicycle storage has been moved to coach D where the shop was. It can now store three bicycles instead of four. The aim is to increase seating capacity, in line with its commitments to the franchise agreements, as well as to provide an at-seat trolley service for refreshments instead of a shop. Research had shown that the shop was not making as good a turnover as hoped because people prefer not to leave their seats to get refreshments; they feared either losing their seat or having their belongings stolen when away.

All units are owned by Beacon Rail , after they were purchased from Voyager Rail Leasing, [17] a consortium of Lloyds Banking Group and Angel Trains . [18] They are leased to the train operating companies ; as of 2013 [ update ] , CrossCountry is the only operator of Class 220 units.

Virgin CrossCountry was the sole operator of Class 220 Voyager trains when they were introduced in 2001. When the Cross Country Route franchise was transferred to Arriva CrossCountry in November 2007, most of the Voyager fleet was transferred with it, and by the end of 2007 CrossCountry was the sole operator of Class 220 units.

Class 220 units often operate in multiple with Class 221 units, which are mechanically similar except for their bogies and have the same coupler type.

Some units have been named; these are as follows:

On 27 July 2021, 220016 was named Voyager 20 at Central Rivers to mark two decades of fleet use. [19]

On 19 August 2021, 220009 was named Hixon at Stafford railway station to commemorate the 11 lives lost and 45 Injured in the Hixon rail crash of January 1968. [20]

Tilting train Type of train that can tilt in curves

A tilting train is a train that has a mechanism enabling increased speed on regular rail tracks. As a train rounds a curve at speed, objects inside the train experience centrifugal force. This can cause packages to slide about or seated passengers to feel squashed by the outboard armrest, and standing passengers to lose their balance, or in such excessive speeds, could even cause the train to derail. Tilting trains are designed to counteract this by tilting the carriages towards the inside of the curve, thus compensating for the g-force. The train may be constructed such that inertial forces cause the tilting, or it may have a computer-controlled powered mechanism.

Train Simulator: North Wales Costal: Crewe – Llandudno Route Add-on with Train Simulator: North Wales Costal Route Extension Add-on Please note that both these route add-ons were previously sold via Steam but are currently not available to purchase. JT AD Voyager 1D91 London Euston - Holyhead Good evening driver. Tonight you are to take Virgin Trains 221101 '101 Squadron' to Holyhead. You are due to leave Crewe at 18:57. London to Brighton Route (Steam) Brighton Voyager Farewell Drive the last ever Cross Country service from Brighton to Birmingham using XC's 220 021 on the 14:30 to Birmingham New Street. Freezing February A Voyager that became stranded at Three Bridges due to heavy snow is to be used to work the final train of the night to London Victoria. The usual unit wasn't available and this is expected to be the final service until the early morning. Great Western Main Line (Steam) New Kid on the Block Today you are in control of a brand new Class 220 Voyager delivered earlier this morning. A depot instructor will lead you through the start-up procedure and the various new controls in this unit. We will then go out onto the main line to do some testing between here and Reading. Caught in the Cold This morning you are in charge of one of Arriva Cross Country's Class 220s on the first train of the day from Reading to Manchester. This service normally starts at Southampton but due to the snow it is starting here at Reading today. The train is 1M18 06:11 Reading-Manchester Piccadilly. It's just coming up to 6 AM and we are running late so need to get the unit started and set up ASAP ready to head into Reading with the empty train. Once at Reading we will reverse and head for Oxford where a Manchester driver will take over. It's not all going to plan, however; the weather has caused problems for other services and many are running late so you can expect further delays en-route to Oxford! Cajon Pass route (Note: This was a default route in previous Train Simulator releases. Not available to purchase separately) Across the Pond Drive a Voyager on a tourist trip over the Cajon Pass. The unit is only on here on hire to show what keeps Britain moving - but it has gained a special US livery! Castle Rock Railroad route (Note: This was a default route in previous Train Simulator releases. Not available to purchase separately. The same-named route available from the Steam Workshop does NOT support this scenario) Castle Rock Experience Take the Voyager on an express service along the length of the Castle Rock Railroad - it's rather different to the usual train on this service! Hagen-Siegen route (Note: This was a default route in previous Train Simulator releases. Not available to purchase separately.) German Tourists Take a party of German skiers on a hired Class 221 Voyager from Hagen to Siegen on a very wintry evening. Seebergbahn route (Note: This was a default route in previous Train Simulator releases. Not available to purchase separately. The same-named route available from the Steam Workshop does NOT support this scenario) On Test in Germany On a stunning summer's morning you are assigned to your first day of training on board the British Class 220 Voyager unit. Totham route (JT) Driver Training It's September 2002 and you have just finished with Class 47s on XC services around Britain. Today is your first day back after a two-week break and it's all changed! Gone are the oily, unreliable 40-year-old Brush veterans and in their place brand new Bombardier Voyager units. Mark, your driver instructor, will take you through the start-up procedure before you head out onto the line for an introductory drive. We will also be testing a few of the fault systems today so keep on top of your game at all times! Bristol to Exeter route (JT) Summer Saturday Service It's a summer Saturday and, as always, the holidaymakers are out in force for their annual holiday to Devon. These are the busiest days of the year here on the Bristol to Exeter line and today is no exception. You are in control of two five car Super Voyagers on a new service for the type. These units are currently replacing the Class 47s on the main services and will eventually see off the HSTs too! However, all is not well. One of our engines has failed and the guard in the second unit says that the temperatures on two of the other cars are not looking good. A Class 47 is also struggling on a southbound service and, to top it off, a Black Five is out on a rail tour to Plymouth! These days are sent to test us! Easy Like a Sunday Morning Today your job is easy (just like a Sunday morning, although it's Monday!). You need to get your Class 220 Voyager prepared for service at Barton Hill depot before working a stopping service down to Weston-Super-Mare and returning to Bristol Temple Meads. We are on hire to FGW today. The commuters are getting a change from their usual Class 150! Newcastle to York Modern route (JT) Rush Hour Express Take charge of a XC Voyager on 1S49 11:25 Plymouth-Dundee on a glorious summer evening. You will be in charge from York to Newcastle. Enjoy the trip - you should have no problems today! FREE ROAM SCENARIOS Free Roam scenarios are available for these routes:

 • Western Main Line
 • Scottish East Coast Main Line x 2

why are my windows not tinted

Will this be updated to work with the lastest update which fixes the tilt issue on the air dam variants of the 221s

Yes, I will get around to updating the pack as soon as possible.

I have looked through the files, and the update for the Voyager pack does not update any files that are included in this consist update, so it should work fine without any issues.

When I try to load it up in Quick Drive. It tells me there is an error trying to load it up. Can I have some advice on what has gone wrong. Is it just me or are the quick drive variants broken. I followed the instructions in the read me.

Do you have the latest version of this pack? I will go through the consists manually and see if anything is broken. Do you have issues with any specific variants? If so, can you please list them?
