Life in Dubai can run at a fast pace and in many ways Dubai’s homegrown music reflects the city’s unique speed and rhythm. It takes centuries for a city to build up a distinctive sound. The music that has come out of Dubai in its short history is a reflection of its position as a melting pot of cultures and influences and at its core is the essential mix of experimentation and collaboration.

Take a young band like Noon, a talented trio harking from Egypt (Mohammed Hosny on Oud), India (Ratish Chadha on drums) and the UK (Steven Bedford on bass). They have been playing together for four years, built a following and recorded their first major album. 

More than just the east meets west fusion that would be a natural consequence of their diverse musical and cultural backgrounds, they create something new in the sound they produce, with elements of jazz, funk and global beats.

Singer Hamdan Al Abri shot to fame in 2008 after his band was nominated as best new act in the MTV Europe Music Awards. Standing out amongst musicians working in Dubai always writing his own material and producing a unique soulful sound, Abri continues to make waves and inspire through his music.

Music scenes in any metropolis are more than the individual players, but there are always certain talents that shake things up or instigate new directions. The first step for any musician is to find a stage, and consequently an audience and from there a scene can develop. Some start out playing in hotel venues, others at an open mike night, or small concert venues like the Analogue Room or a pop-up by an independent creative producer like The Other Side.

One-off events and festivals also help galvanise a scene, some on a big scale such as the Dubai Jazz Festival, others like Sikka, Groove on the Grass, Breakout dxb or live music sessions at Project Chaiwala in Alserkal Avenue are more intimate. 

International music labels such as Universal and Sony now have bases in the region. Major concerts and festivals give homegrown talent the chance to open for big acts and play large crowds.

What the scene needs to thrive are places to not just perform, but to connect, learn and listen. Step in Flipside dxb, the city’s first (and only) independent record shop which opened in Alserkal Avenue in 2018. 

The brainchild of Shadi Megallaa, the space not only sells an eclectic curated selection of vinyl including local artists and record labels but arranges in-store events for up-and-coming talent. 

A core group of multi-national creatives who grew up in the city, have spent time playing together and have reached a level of productive kinship. This was demonstrated by the successes of the event dxb4bey in December 2020 which raised funds for Lebanon.

Organised by Niki Mukhi, a guitarist who plays in a quintet and is also a composer and entrepreneur, the event at Dubai Opera brought together leading musicians from a wide variety of genres featuring notable artists Noush Like Sploosh, Bull Funk Zoo and the aforementioned Noon.

In the series Sound of the City from Visit Dubai, locally based artists record in iconic places in Dubai: Niki Mukhi was recorded crossing the creek on an abra, Hamdan Al Abri performed live in the Hatta mountains. By making the natural landscape the venue, the music scene becomes accessible to everyone.

Q’s Bar and Lounge It doesn’t get more star-studded than this living-room-style lounge from music icon Quincy Jones. The first and only jazz club from the living legend, the exclusive space is appropriately tucked within the regal Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Palazzo Versace Dubai .

The posh, dark leather interior is both sophisticated and relaxed. This one’s for serious music lovers. Conversations are kept to a minimum during shows to maintain the focus on performances by world-class artists (such as American Idol season 14 runner-up Clark Beckham), handpicked for a residency at the venue by Jones himself.

Here, it isn’t just the music that is influenced by the acclaimed producer; the extensive cocktail list is inspired by his musical career, too. Order a signature creation such as Off The Wall, named, of course, after the chart-topping 1979 Michael Jackson album.

PizzaExpress Live While you might not necessarily equate pizza with live music, this Business Bay eatery has only strengthened its image since it debuted in early 2018 as an intimate music venue that encourages local talent across a variety of genres.

Whether or not you intend to tuck into the delicious thin-crust pies (and you absolutely must), it’s worth visiting on Friday evenings for the lively tunes from local band The Swing Revue and throwback dance moves from Lindy-hop Dubai.

A Wednesday open mic night provides a prime opportunity to hear some up-and-coming regional artists.

Lock, Stock & Barrel These trendy spots (one in Barsha Heights, the other on the Four-Star The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai -connected JBR The Walk promenade) stand out among other bars in the UAE for their effortlessly cool industrial edge (see: exposed beams and brickwork, a vintage speaker wall, retro lighting, wood finishes and wall panels that look like shipping containers).

There’s live music a couple of nights a week, and performances by the resident bands (13 Daze and Gorgeous George) usually draw a full house. Come here to rock or to chill out to acoustic renditions. 

The bi-level bars stay open until 3 a.m., serving a solid set of cocktails (get in the mood with a Rockstar Collins made with vodka, Passoã passion fruit liqueur, vanilla and lemonade) and street-food-inspired bites to accompany those tunes.

The Dubai Fountain

The Dubai Fountain Lake Ride

A captivating water, music and light spectacle in Downtown Dubai, The Dubai Fountain is the world’s tallest performing fountain. At over 900 ft in length – equivalent to over two football pitches – The Dubai Fountain is situated on the 30-acre Burj Lake and performs to a selection of different melodies. The fountain has a unique design comprising five circles of varying sizes and two arcs and features powerful water nozzles that shoot water up to impressive heights. Over 6,600 WET Superlights and 25 colour projectors create a visual spectrum of over 1,000 different water expressions, while 50 colour projectors provide a full spectrum of colour with a total output of 1.5 million lumens. The fountain performs to a range of different songs from classical to contemporary Arabic and world music. When operational, the fountain has over 22,000 gallons of water in the air at any given moment.

Savage Love singer Jason Derulo is set to perform in Dubai at the Coca-Cola Arena on Saturday, May 4. Derulo is no stranger to Dubai and has performed here a number of times. This time, he’s here as part of the EarthSoul Festival. The RnB singer-songwriter has been blowing up the charts since 2009, with the release of his single  Whatcha Say , which became the most widely played radio single of all time and earned triple-platinum status after its release that year. Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and rapper T.I. are set to perform at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena next month. Taking place on Sunday, May 12, this will be the first time that pop icon Nicole Scherzinger and Grammy Award-winning rapper T.I. have headlined together. Nicole Scherzinger rose to fame as the lead singer of the pop supergroup Pussycat Dolls, who put out some of the noughties best-loved pop girl band anthems, like Don’t Cha, Stickwitu  and  Buttons. After the group disbanded, Scherzinger continued to put her incredible vocals into a successful solo career. Hip-hop artist T.I, who performed alongside Sean Paul in December 2023 at the Coca-Cola Arena, makes his Dubai return on May 12. He is known for hits including  Live Your Life, Bring em Out,  and  All That She Wrote.  Throughout his multi-decade music career, he has worked alongside the likes of Justin Timberlake, Eminem and T-Pain.

The Gruffalo’s Child

Grammy-award-winning Chris Botti is heading to the Dubai Opera. Hans Zimmer Live

When: May 31 and April 1, 2024

When it comes to scoring blockbusters, few Hollywood composers come close to the likes of Hans Zimmer. He is the man behind the stirring music of Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Top Gun: Maverick, The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean ,  Interstellar, Dune and more. He will be joined on stage by his 45-piece world-class band including Tina Guao on the cello, Pedro Eustache on the winds, and many of the vocal artists from the original soundtracks. The last time Zimmer was in Dubai was in January 2023, and his concert was so popular that a last-minute extra date was added to the schedule. Back in 2022, the spectacular show aquatic show Fontana left us on the edge of our seats with its jaw-dropping acrobatic stunts. And this year, Cirque Du Liban is enthralling us yet again with a new circus show in Dubai – a new show concept titled Pluma. It follows  a little girl called Pluma with big dreams of flying. British comedian, Russell Kane was in Dubai last year in January 2023, and he is set to return on June 2, once again performing at the Theatre by QE2. WATERBOMB Festival

The WATERBOMB Festival is one of Korea’s biggest coming together of the two genres and it will be landing in Dubai to serve us some of that K-Town magic on June 7 and 8. Think all things K-Pop, EDM and for the real fun part – one big water fight. Looking for some laughs? Then you’ll want to snap up tickets to British comedian Romesh Ranganathan who is coming to Dubai for the very first time this October. The master of major lols will perform at City Walk’s Coca-Cola Arena in October. Green Day and The Offspring are teaming up for mega concert at Expo City Dubai

Punk rock kings Green Day are coming to Dubai in January.

The American Grammy Award-winning band will make their Middle East debut performance at Expo City Dubai on January 27 in a purpose-built open-air concert venue that will host up to 30,000 people.

Supporting them are fellow California punk veterans The Offspring.

Fans can register for pre-sale tickets on Greendaydxb.com as they will go on sale for 24 hours from 10am on Thursday, immediately followed by general sale tickets.

Regional fans will be catching Green Day at a resonant period of the band's career with the current world tour celebrating a trio of releases, past and present. They are this year’s new album Saviours , the 20th anniversary of blockbuster album American Idiot and the 30-year release of their breakout album, Dookie .

While the latter albums feature some of their biggest and enduring hits such as Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Longview , their latest album, Saviours, channels the spirit of these classic recordings with its string of punchy punk-pop missives and topical subject matter.

“We are pumped to perform in the Middle East for the very first time, we have so many loyal fans all around the world, and we can’t wait to rock with them in the Middle East in the New Year,” the band said.

Also making their regional debut is The Offspring , who come to Dubai with their own share of history. Last month was the 30th anniversary of their seminal third album Smash , which featured early hits Come Out and Play and Self Esteem. They are also known for the 1998 hit Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) .

The 30 million combined sales of The Offspring's Smash and Green Day's Dookie (released two months prior) helped set the scene for the wave of pop-punk bands to come such as Blink-182 and Good Charlotte.

"Despite fans requesting Green Day for years, it is only now we can satisfy that demand and hopefully it means more contemporary and 'edgy' rock acts will follow," says Thomas Ovesen, chief executive of promoters All Things Live Middle East.

“Green Day need no introduction, they are without doubt one of the most requested rock bands in our region and we are thrilled to be bringing them to the UAE for their first show in the Middle East.

“My advice to those fans wishing to watch this historic event is to book your tickets early, because we fully expect this show to sell out. ... The concert will be held in a 30,000-capacity venue and we cannot expand this nor will there be a second show. Hence I urge fans to get their tickets early.”
