This fascinating programme from VOCES8 will immerse you in the swirling and undulating sounds of György Ligeti (whose centenary we celebrate this year and whose Lux Aeterna found fame in Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: Space Odyssey), Pēteris Vasks and Caroline Shaw – pieces that show off micropolyphony, extended vocal technique and abstract sounds. Set alongside this is J.S. Bach’s glorious solo violin Partita No. 2 played by Fenella Humphreys and here incorporating sung chorales, a double choir work from Charles Wood and Elgar’s Nimrod, arranged for voices as Lux Aeterna. VOCES8 welcomes the VOCES8 Scholars, violinist Fenella Humphreys and cellist Matthew Sharp, all directed by Barnaby Smith.

These scholarships are linked to the annual Milton Abbey Summer School at which amateur singers of all ages learn and perform with VOCES8. Through the separate VOCES8 USA Foundation there is another set of twelve talented Scholars.

VOCES8’s entrepreneurial and community spirit is fostered by Co-Founders Paul and Barnaby Smith. The Covid-19 pandemic gave the impetus for VOCES8 to transform its already exceptional offerings, nurturing a new online audience community providing a chance to engage with classical music in new ways. Pioneering initiatives include the  LIVE From London  online festival and the  VOCES8 Digital Academy .

LIVE From London  was created as a specific response to the pandemic. Winning praise for its collaborative approach with artists, press and audiences around the world the team has delivered ten digital festivals to date, broadcasting over 100 concerts and selling 250,000 tickets around the world. The  VOCES8 Digital Academy  is an online choral programme for high schools, colleges and individuals featuring live interaction with members of the ensemble, live and recorded lectures, and video resources to learn and perform music from the renaissance to today. Both LIVE From London and the Digital Academy is filmed by  VOCES8 Studios , the in-house recording company.

Alongside their online work VOCES8 is heard regularly on albums, international television and radio. The ensemble is a Decca Classics artist, also releasing on its own label,  VOCES8 Records . The Decca Classics recording of Christopher Tin’s “The Lost Birds” featuring VOCES8 and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy-Award in 2023. The newest albums are “Home” conducted by Eric Whitacre, featuring his extraordinary work “The Sacred Veil” which reached the top of the classical charts in both the UK and USA, and “Seven Psalms” by Paul Simon in which VOCES8 was thrilled to participate. In the run-up to Christmas 2023 VOCES8 joins its own Foundation Choir and Orchestra in “A Choral Christmas”, a joyful selection of favourite carols with sparkling new arrangements for choir and featuring the premiere recording of Taylor Scott Davis’s “Magnificat”.

VOCES8 is proud to be working with Ken Burton as the group’s Composer-in-Residence and Jim Clements as Arranger-in-Residence. The ensemble has premiered commissions from Jonathan Dove, Roxanna Panufnik, Roderick Williams, Paul Smith, Jocelyn Hagen, Melissa Dunphy, Ken Williams, Taylor Scott Davis, Alexander Levine, Alexia Sloane, Alec Roth, Ben Parry, Ola Gjeilo, Mårten Jansson, Philip Stopford, Graham Lack, Thomas Hewitt Jones and Owain Park. They publish arrangements of its music, original compositions and educational material with the new digital  VOCES8 Publishing  house, and with Edition Peters. PROGRAM: AFTER SILENCE

“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” — Aldous Huxley

In the essay from which the title After Silence is taken, Aldous Huxley offers his thoughts on the essential force of music. The most profoundly significant constituents of our being, he says, include our responses to beauty, pleasure, pain, ecstasy, and death. These can best be ‘experienced, not expressed’ through silence, and after silence, through music. The choral works in this 15th-anniversary programme (to accompany the ensemble’s compendium album release) are exalted, vital, and freed from their original contextual restraints and are distinguishable by their inexhaustible capacity to express the inexpressible.

The Worcester Chorus: Bach B Minor Mass

Pick of the Proms 2024: Daniel Barenboim, Yo-Yo Ma, Sarah Vaughan and more

From Daniel Barenboim to Doctor Who, this year’s festival hits all the right notes. Here’s a round-up of the hottest tickets

Pick of the Proms, from left: Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Florence Welch and Anne-Sophie Mutter

The orchestras you need to see

Among the many visiting orchestras this year are four of the greatest in continental Europe. Simon Rattle will make his first visit to the Proms as chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in two concerts featuring Thomas Adès (Prom 61, Sept 5) and Mahler (Prom 62, Sept 6). The Berlin Philharmonic and its reclusive chief conductor Kirill Petrenko play Schumann, Smetana and Bruckner (Proms 55 & 56, Aug 31 and Sept 1), the Orchestre de Paris under Finnish superstar Klaus Mäkelä tackle Berlioz, Stravinsky and Debussy (Prom 58, Sept 3) and the Czech Philharmonic with conductor Jakub Hrůša offer a feast of Czech music (Prom 49, Aug 27; Prom 50, Aug 28).

The soloists to hone in on

These include relative newcomers such as pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason (1st Night, July 19), and no shortage of youthful talent throughout the season, including saxophonist Jess Gillam (Prom 32, Aug 12), and brilliant Korean wunderkind Yunchan Lim (Prom 14, July 29). For sheer star firepower, head for Prom 31 (Aug 11) where violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter appears with Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and Prom 54 (Aug 31), in which pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Leonidas Kavakos and cellist Yo-Yo Ma play Beethoven.

The Kanneh-Mason family

The ones to see with your family

As always the Proms strives to appeal to younger listeners without talking down to them. In Proms 20 and 22 (Aug 4 and 5), two members of the famed Kanneh-Mason clan, violinist Braimah and cellist Sheku join with the Fantasia Orchestra and guitarist Plínio Fernandez for a morning of folk dances, prayers, dances and incantations. Fans of Doctor Who will delight in Murray Gold’s lavish scores across 12 years of the series (Prom 47 & 48, Aug 26) and very young kiddies will thrill to the CBeebies Prom: Wildlife Jamboree BBC (Proms 11 & 12, July 27) and hear some proper grown-up music by Telemann, Ravel, Britten etc in the CBeebies Prom: Ocean Adventure (Proms Bristol, Aug 26).

The ones to see if you’re a novice

It’s an admirable characteristic of the Proms that they’re nearly all approachable, but a few are especially so. Glyndebourne Festival Opera’s production of Carmen (Prom 52, Aug 29), one of several operas in the season, brings listeners one knock-out melody after another, as well as a riveting tale of sex, jealousy and death. Perhaps the perfect beginner’s Prom is the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s Prom 43 (Aug 22), which brings together Mozartean grace, enchantment from Ravel, picture-postcard magic from Mussorgsky, and a rapt nocturne by Augusta Holmès.

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma

The blockbusters you need to book

There’s no better venue than the Royal Albert Hall for hearing the great choral-and-orchestral big beasts. There’s Handel’s Messiah, performed here by no fewer than six choirs and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields (Prom 65, Sept 7), Bach’s St John Passion (Prom 40, Aug 19) Britten’s War Requiem (Prom 37, Aug 17) and most blazingly dramatic of all, Verdi’s Requiem (Prom 6 July 23). There are plenty of giant-sized orchestral works too, including Mahler’s 5th Symphony (Prom 4, July 21) conducted by Sir Mark Elder in his last Prom as Music Director of the Hallé Orchestra, and most joyous and deafening of all, Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony (Prom 15, July 30).

The little gems that might pass you by

The Proms isn’t just about long and loud; there are plenty of finely honed miniatures too. There’s The Evening Watch by Gustav Holst (150 this year) in a choral Prom from Voces8 and the King’s Singers (Prom 3, July 21). There are Duke Ellington hits in Prom 35 (Aug 15), Bartók’s much-loved Romanian Folk Dances in Proms 20 and 22, (Aug 4 and Aug 5), Burt Bacharach’s I Say a Little Prayer in the Fantasia Orchestra’s Prom (Prom 20, Aug 4) and a whole evening of exquisite Italian Baroque songs in Prom 7 (July 23). Beyond London, there’s Tavener’s Song for Athene from the BBC Singers (Bristol Beacon, August 25) and Germaine Tailleferre’s lovely Little Suite for Orchestra at the Glasshouse Centre (July 26).

The Royal Albert Hall

The ones for pop and jazz lovers

Highlights include a concert version of Florence Welch’s stunning debut Symphony of Lungs (Prom 69, Sept 11), an evening of Nick Drake songs (Prom 8, July 24), and a tribute to the great jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with a host of guest singers (Prom 13, July 28). But the one that really intrigues me is Everybody Dance! The Sound of Disco (Prom 2, July 20).

The (almost) forgotten masterpieces

Three in particular have caught my eye: the huge, mystically effusive Asrael symphony composed by Josef Suk in memory of his wife and father-in-law Antonin Dvořák (Prom 49, 27 Aug); Arnold Schoenberg’s vast and radiantly beautiful symphonic poem Pelleas und Melisande, which will astonish anyone who thinks Schoenberg only wrote “beastly modern music” (Prom 5, July 22); and most extravagantly wild of all, the piano concerto by one of the great visionaries in all music, Ferruccio Busoni (Prom 23, Aug 5).

Conductor Daniel Barenboim

The ones for the musically adventurous

Those who think the Proms has lost its mojo when it comes to new music will be heartened by this season. True, the 150th birthday salute to Schoenberg is a bit stingy with only three pieces, but it does include his wonderful Violin Concerto (Prom 67, Sept 9). That ingenious fabricator of multi-media spectaculars Heiner Goebbels is featured in the Proms for the first time with Songs of Wars I Have Seen (Prom 28, Aug 9), as is the saxophonist and composer who’s reconceived the very idea of composing, Anthony Braxton (Prom 35, Aug 15). The tragically short life of gay, black minimalist pioneer Julius Eastman is honoured in Prom 45 (Aug 24). If I had to highlight one of the many Proms commissions, it would be Lara Poe’s Laulut maaseudulta (Songs from the Countryside) inspired by Nordic cow-calling traditions (Prom 46, Aug 25).

If you only go and see one Prom

An impossible choice, but if pushed I would go for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s Prom on August 31 (Prom 55) because Víkingur Ólafsson performance of Schumann’s piano concerto is sure to dance on elfin feet, and the orchestra’s performance of Smetana’s Má vlast (My Homeland) will be sumptuous.

One to watch: pianist Víkingur Ólafsson

Last Ward by Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre

Hailed as “an uncommonly deft combination of dance and verbal theater” in a New York Times Critics’ Pick review, Last Ward follows one man’s journey towards death in a hospital room. Surrounded by the sterile mechanisms of modern medicine, the patient reflects on his life, relationships and connection to place, as the ritual of doctor visits and family calls transform into a surreal landscape of tragedy and humor. Performed in Arabic with English subtitles, Last Ward was written and directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi with choreography and music by Samar Haddad King.

These two performances follow a week-long residency with the company at Duke University.

Adrianne Lenker with special guest Suzanne Vallie

Friday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m. in Page Auditorium

Adrianne Lenker, known for her work in both the indie-folk band Big Thief and as a solo artist, will perform in support of her latest album, Bright Future . The concert will open with a performance by poet and songwriter Suzanne Vallie.

Chamber Arts Series:

Now in its 79th year, this popular series features eight concerts by world-renowned small ensembles selected by the Chamber Arts Society of Durham for the Duke Arts Presents season. The season opens with the acclaimed Tesla Quartet in their Duke debut. The innovative piano-percussion Vesna Duo follows with their “Roots and Rhizomes” program, which ends with their energetic take on Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” Paris-based Modigliani Quartet returns to Duke in October with a wide-ranging program of works by Weber, Ravel and Beethoven. The semester ends with a “Beethoven Journey” program by Chamber Arts Series favorites David Finckel and Wu Han , a cello-piano duo who are leading figures in the American classical music scene.

After a brief winter break, concerts resume in March with the acclaimed young Goldmund Quartet making their Duke debut. UK luminaries the Elias String Quartet then performs a program of wrought, emotional string quartets by siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn flanking “Entr’acte,” a 2011 piece by North Carolina-native Caroline Shaw. The trailblazing Zodiac Trio brings an exciting program of works by American composers performed in their unusual instrumentation of clarinet, violin and piano. Finally, the globally acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet returns to Duke Arts to close the season with works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Brahms.

Piano Recital Series:

Each year, the piano recital series showcases the talents of four world-leading pianists in Baldwin Auditorium. This year’s series begins with German pianist and famed Bach interpreter Schanghajegh Nosrati in her Duke debut. Next, Korean pianist Joyce Yang returns to Duke for the first time in twelve years; since her last visit, she has blossomed from wünderkind into a mature and sensitive artist at the forefront of her craft. The third concert brings renowned American pianist Michelle Cann with “The Women of Chicago’s Black Renaissance,” a program that pairs Cann’s virtuosic playing with spoken commentary about the fascinating lives of its featured artists. The series closes with the Mexican piano prodigy Daniela Liebman , who at age twenty-one has already performed with over thirty orchestras on four continents.

1. Schaghajegh Nosrati on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. 2. Joyce Yang on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. 3. Michelle Cann on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. 4. Daniela Liebman on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.

Vocal Ensemble Series:

The Vocal Ensemble Series from Duke Arts Presents showcases the highest level of vocal talent from across the globe. The distinguished vocal ensembles in this year’s four-concert series illustrate the vast variety and dynamism of the choral artform.

The series begins with two leading British vocal ensembles.  Tenebrae  is scheduled to provide a moment of togetherness in Duke Chapel immediately following the 2024 general election. In December, a cappella octet  VOCES8  will visit Baldwin Auditorium to perform “Winter Tales,” a program of holiday music spanning centuries, from medieval carols to “Let it Snow.” Over MLK weekend, American chamber choir  Tonality  performs “America Will Be,” a dynamic program that conjures a patriotic future of the United States for all people. And finally, German boys’ choir  Thomanerchor Leipzig , founded in 1212, will close the season in Duke Chapel with a wide range of works by more than ten composers, including their most famous cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach.
