Because life's too short to stay home …, road trip: breweries of southern wisconsin, a beer-lover's tour taps into old world flavors..

Fat Squirrel. Spotted Cow. Lazy Mutt. Uff-da.

Uff-da? In Wisconsin, say that and you get a great glass of beer. Anywhere else, and you get . . . a funny look.

Wisconsin may be full of cheeseheads. It may be a party state. But boy, are they drinking a lot of good beer there.

Its days as the nation's beer capital are over — Schlitz, Pabst and Heileman are gone — though you still can tour the old Miller plant in Milwaukee and sample 10 American-style pilseners with different names.

Or you could go to New Glarus for a Belgian Red, a delectable cherry beer that has won New Glarus Brewing Co. a boatload of prizes.

Or to Middleton for a Blonde Doppelbock from Capital Brewing.

In fact, you could try quite a lot of good beers.

That's what a girlfriend and I did on a tour of southern Wisconsin, where the state's first brewery was built in 1835 — not in fledgling Milwaukee, but in Mineral Point. That's where we stayed, at a brewery that's also an inn, and shopped, at an old brewery that's now a pottery studio.

We listened to music at a brewpub in Mount Horeb, and toured the breweries in Middleton and New Glarus as well as one in Janesville.

It was Germans and Englishmen who brewed, but the Swiss also added to the melting pot. In New Glarus, we bought Linzer bars and nut horns at one of the best and oldest bakeries in the Midwest.

In Monroe, the capital of cheese country, we stopped at Wisconsin's oldest cheese shop.

We didn't have the notorious Limburger-and-onion sandwich. But other than that, we didn't shrink from new flavors.

"Beer people and cheese people have a lot in common," says Deborah Carey of New Glarus Brewing. "If all you'd ever had was Velveeta, and one day you had cheddar, you might be grossed out — or you might fall in love with it.

"But you'd definitely know there were different flavors out there."

The Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb.

Ben Franklin and Frank Zappa

Behind the 1892 walnut bar at Capital Brewing in Middleton, Tom Westfall was quoting Benjamin Franklin.

" 'Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy,' " he said. He led us into the brew house, past fermenting tanks named for Frank Zappa songs — Redunzel, Magdalena, Heavy Duty Judy — and handed out kernels of malted barley to chew on; they tasted just like Grape-Nuts cereal.

Then he let us smell the hops, which grow on vines.

"Anyone know what its closest relative is?" he asked. "Yep — a slight little change in the genome and you're smoking wacky tobacky. So you're either smoking dope or drinking beer."

Capital Brewing, he said, was started in 1984 by four servicemen who'd been stationed in Germany and, once back in the States, yearned for good beer. They're no longer involved, but their brewery has taken off.

"We were rated No. 1 brewery in the U.S. by the Beverage Testing Institute, and No. 4 in the world," Westfall said. "Not bad for Madison, Wis."

He poured a sample of Capital 1900, from an old Schlitz recipe. "Give 'em a glass of this, and I guarantee they'll never go back to Bud or Miller."

In the Bier Garten, picnickers were sitting at tables, with occasional visits to the open-air bar, adorned with a mural of Alpine mountains. There's a bandshell, too, for the musicians who play on Friday and Saturday nights.

Heading west

We were tempted to hang out — a guitarist was noodling with some blues tunes — but we headed west to Mount Horeb , a Norwegian town whose Main Street is lined with carved wood trolls.

Half a block off the Trollway, we found the Grumpy Troll brewpub in a restored 1916 creamery.

On the airy second floor, we listened to the jazzy quartet Harmonious Wail and ordered beer. We had Liberty Pole ale and the Norwegian Wood, an India pale ale that's packed with hops — enough, by tradition, to preserve ale on voyages from Britain to colonial India.

Our inn is in nearby Mineral Point, to which Cornish miners came in the 1830s after the discovery of lead. They were expert stonemasons, which explains the town's lovely limestone cottages, many now used by artists, and warehouses, including the 1854 Brewery Creek Inn.

Pub in Mineral Point.

We ate elsewhere but we returned to the cozy pub to draw our own beers — a Kölsch-style blonde ale, a porter from a 1750 recipe and a Schwartzbier.

Proprietor and brewmaster Jeff Donaghue eventually joined us, offering pickled eggs, which we politely declined.

"I call this English pub meets Wisconsin frontier," he said, waving at the wood-beamed ceiling and paneling from behind the columned oak back bar, taken from a clothing store near his former home in a Minneapolis suburb.

And the rooms are simple and elegant, with walls of glowing limestone, tiled gas fireplaces, gleaming antiques and Arts and Crafts accents. We threw lavender salts into the double whirlpool and had a soak, emerging to wrap ourselves in fluffy robes.

Past Pendarvis, a state historic site where costumed interpreters give tours of restored miner's cottages, we found Brewery Pottery Studio, in a huge 1850 stone brewery where Mineral Springs beer was made from 1852 to 1961.

Potters Tom and Diana Johnston live and work here, and Diana Johnston gave us a tour, including the fermenting room, now a basketball court, and a series of caverns dug into the hillside.

"They definitely brewed beer here during Prohibition," she said. "The story is that when the Feds came, the people would climb a ladder to the ventilation shaft and scatter."

Capital Brewery in Middleton.

Drinking with the Swiss

It's a bucolic drive through rolling farmland to New Glarus, settled in 1845 by colonists from the impoverished Swiss canton of Glarus, and still a town in which the local German dialect often is heard.

It's a great town in which to drink beer — at the 1853 New Glarus Hotel,  the wood-beamed Glarner Stube and the 1893 Puempl's, with its 1913 murals of Napoleonic scenes and dollar bills stuck to 18-foot ceilings.

The beer? New Glarus, of course.

"Everybody in town feels a distinct personal ownership in our beer," said Dan Carey, a master brewer who opened New Glarus Brewing in 1993 with Deb, his wife. "We have 2,000 people selling for us."

Carey worked for a small brewery near Munich and for Anheuser-Busch in Fort Collins, Colo., before returning to Wisconsin with Deb, a Milwaukee native. Each of its beers — from the popular Spotted Cow to such limited-edition Unplugged brews as Smoke on the Porter — is made from a completely different recipe.

We stocked up on its beer, since it's sold only in Wisconsin. Then we headed to Monroe, where Huber Brewing was started in 1845.

Mountain Crest Brewing of Calgary, Alberta, bought the brewery in 2006 and renamed it Minhas Craft Brewery, but it's still one of the oldest continually operating breweries in the nation.

Now it's making such craft beers as Lazy Mutt Farmhouse Ale, but it also still makes its trademark Berghoff beer.

We had some with bratwurst and barbecued beef at Baumgartner's, an atmospheric tavern and cheese shop opposite Monroe's beautiful Romanesque courthouse.

Bartender John Stratton pointed out the old-timers playing the Swiss card game Jass in the corner. "They play for 15 cents a game," he said. "It's blood money."

All in the family

Janesville isn't far away. That's where, in 1854, Irish immigrant Joshua Gray started bottling soda and beer. Gray's stopped brewing beer during Prohibition, but when the bottling works burned down in 1993, great-great-grandson Fred Gray rebuilt it to make both beer and gourmet sodas.

Today, it's the nation's oldest family-owned bottling company.

"I saw a niche for a good ale brewery," Fred Gray said. "We just consider ourselves a brewery — I don't really like the word "micro"; it's too trendy." Gray's biggest sellers are Honey Ale and Old Mill Stout, and his connoisseur's beer is the Oatmeal Stout.

Sign at New Glarus Brewing.

"I'm pretty passionate about my beer," Gray said.

We didn't go on to Milwaukee, since I've already toured its breweries (for more, see Mad about brew ).

Besides, our trunk already was full of six-packs. We hoped they'd last a while. Like craft brewers, we're followers of a slogan adapted from an old German wine adage: "Life is too short to drink cheap beer."

This brewery is certainly no ordinary brewery, in fact, it even has its very own Bier Garden and hall! For beer lovers, the Lazy Monk Brewery is definitely a brewery that deserves your attention.

3. MobCraft Brewery and Taproom

Where: 505 S 5th St, Milwaukee

Visit the top breweries in Wisconsin, close up shot of a tall glass tankard filled with golden fizzy beer on a wooden table

Crowdsourced MobCraft Brewery and Taproom dare to be different and that it certainly is.

Located in Walker’s Point, Milwaukee, and founded in 2011, the brewery is one-of-a-kind having built its ideas from fans of beer.

Listening to the crowd, MobCraft has grown to be one of the most loved breweries in Wisconsin with its beers gracing the shelves of local retailers and beyond.

For those that want to enjoy one of the brewery’s beers with friends, MobCraft’s taproom locations are the perfect place to do just that.

MobCraft is unique in the sense that beer fans can submit ideas to the brewery – and there’s every chance that the beer will be crafted. Known as one of the best craft breweries in Wisconsin, MobCraft is proving that it pays to be open-minded.

Once an idea has been submitted for a new beer, voters take to social media to choose the recipe that most appeals to them with the winning beer being brewed the following month.

Talk about impressive! After the brewing period (usually spanning 4-6 weeks), the beer is then released to be enjoyed by the crowd who voted for it.

Offering both seasonal beers and year-round favorites, MobCraft takes ‘pleasing the crowd’ to a whole new level! Be sure to visit MobCraft Brewery and Taproom if you fancy yourself as an aspiring bee brewer.

4. Wisconsin Brewing Co., Verona

Where: 1079 American Way, Verona

Next, up on our Wisconsin breweries list is Wisconsin Brewing Co. located in Verona.

Two brothers founded this successful brewery with hopes of mastering the brewing craft, and they’ve certainly done just that!

Bringing together their passion for the Badger State and its friendly culture, the brothers, Carl and Mark Nolen used their home state to inspire exceptional homebrewed beer.

With a Taproom open to the public throughout the week and a huge backyard bar set up to bring Verona’s beer lovers together, Wisconsin Brewing Co. deserves a place on any best breweries list.

In addition to providing great craft beers to its visitors, Wisconsin Brewing Co. also offers free events to the local community and prides itself on being family-friendly, and the best part of all, you can even bring your dog along for the fun too.

5. Lake Louie Brewing

Where: 7556 Pine Rd, Arena

Try out all these amazing Wisconsin beer brands, close up shot of three hands each holding a tall glass tankard filled with golden fizzy beer together in celebration

Lake Louie Brewing is one of the largest breweries in Wisconsin and has recently merged with Wisconsin Brewing Co.

Located on the picturesque lakefront of Lake Louie, the brewery prides itself on its commitment to brewing excellent, unique beers.

Using fine ingredients found in the state, Lake Louie has quickly grown to be one of the most popular breweries in the area since opening back in 2013.

Proudly brewing a range of craft beers such as the Badger Club Amber, Lake Louie beers can be enjoyed in the Taproom locations, picked up from the brewery directly, or found in local retailers.

Lake Louie Brewing runs a number of events year-round, including family-friendly day events.

Whether you fancy enjoying a quality crafted beer and testing your general knowledge at the brewery’s quiz, or you could benefit from a night of relaxing live music, this brewery is not just about brewing but intentionally bringing people together for a real, good time!

6. O’So Brewing Company

Where: 1800 Plover Rd, Plover

Founded in 2007, O’So Brewing Company in Plover sees brewing exceptional beer as an art, and this is very evident when you sample some of their wonderful recipes!

Couple Marc and Katina always shared a love for beer, with Marc being an enthusiastic home-brewer before establishing his own company.

O’So quickly grew to be one of the largest breweries in Wisconsin and was declared the 2nd fastest growing brewery in the entire state back in 2013.

Since then, the brewery has continued to ace production and has won multiple awards over the years for the quality of its beers, with its own year-round, The Big O , winning gold.

The brewery currently offers 30 different variations of craft beer on tap which can be enjoyed in its Taproom.

However, it is the deviation to using Wisconsin-sourced ingredients and supporting other local businesses that set this brewery apart.

From the grain to the bottles for the beer, all are made right in the heart of Wisconsin.

7. Hacienda Beer Co.

Where: 8099 WI-57, Baileys Harbor

Don't miss these Wisconsin microbreweries, hand holding a sample glass of beer with a long modern bar and barstools behind and a view into the brewery beyond

Whilst there are lots of famous breweries in Wisconsin, no brewery in the state is quite as innovative as Hacienda Beer Co.

Located in Bailey’s Harbor, Hacienda Beer Co. expertly crafts each of its beers in a 15-barrel brewhouse.

Both modern and experimental, the brewery’s approach to crafting excellent beer focuses on taking inspiration from its surroundings in Door County which has grown to be an infamous scene for craft beers.

Brewing all of their beers in-house with the use of mixed fermentation facilities in Baileys Harbor, this brewery is completely dedicated to making quality beer that stands out.

Influenced by their roots, Hacienda Beer Co. uses lively graphics and unique recipes to stand out in the craft beer brewing industry.

You can enjoy the brewery’s beers at the Door County Brewing Co. Music Hall or the North Ave. Taproom, although you’ll no doubt find many of the local retailers offering Hacienda’s delicious beers too!

8. Good City Brewing

Where: 333 W Juneau Ave, Milwaukee

If you’re looking to seek the good when it comes to beer, Good City Brewing has your back.

Going ‘all out’ with their brewing, a delightful range can be found here, including Inner Sanctum – Brandy Barrel Aged Belgian Quad; Slugger – Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stout; Grandamber – Brandy Barrel-Aged Barleywine.

Potosi is a great experience simply due to being a re-founded company whose history extends back to 1852 and which closed from 1972 to 2008 when it was started up again brewing only small craft beer options.

Located close to the Mississippi River, the experience is worth a day out. Brewery tours operate on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. sharp.

25. Black Husky Brewing

Where: 909 E Locust St, Milwaukee

Try out all of the best beers brewed in Wisconsin, close up shot of a wooden beer flights board holding a selection of different colored beers sitting on a wooden table with a small glass of colorful flowers behind

The final Wisconsin brewery to make the list is Black Husky Brewing and it should be high on your list of great breweries in Northern Wisconsin and the best brewery in Door County to visit.

You will not be disappointed at this brewery, with great craft beer like The Original Black Husky Pale Ale.

Pale Ale with Simcoe Hops, Deck Dog (the Black Husky version of a German Pilsner), Dogfather Pale Ale with Mosaic hops, Sprouse. (a double IPA brewed with spruce) and citrusy Vain Pale Ale, or maple syrup-based Big Buck Brown.

What’s not to like? If honey is more your thing, try Harvel the Marvel, and if you are going during Oktoberfest have a look for the Jodlerkonig .

In 2021 Black Husky Brewing collaborated with the city of Milwaukee to brew their 9.9% Double IPA using up spruce tips from the city’s Christmas tree.

The proceeds from the venture were donated to the Milwaukee Urban Forestry Fund. No wonder it’s often considered one of the best breweries in Wisconsin.

26. ALT Brew

Where: 1808 Wright St, Madison

ALT Brew is one of the best brewing companies in Wisconsin for those looking for gluten-free options.

This Wisconsin craft beer is brewed at a nano-brewery in Madison, WI, and made with 100% gluten-free ingredients so those with gluten intolerance can drink with ease.

If you’re hoping to stock up on your favorite beers made in Wisconsin, ALT Brew even sells several of their top beers online, so you don’t even need to come in.

27. Titletown Brewing Company

Where: 320 N Broadway, Green Bay

Enjoy all of these beers from Wisconsin, a group of four arms holding beer pints and bottles together in celebration with a light shining behind

The Titletown Brewing Company has been brewing its amazing Wisconsin beers since 1996 when it first opened its doors.

Now it’s not just one of my favorite Wisconsin microbreweries, but a part of Green Bay history.

With an ethos like “Beer isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.” you know they value quality, not quantity which is why they only do a handful of year-round and seasonal beers.

But it’s worth the focus because this is considered some of the best beer made in Wisconsin.

Visitors can enjoy food with their beer, and even arrange for private tours of the brewery.

28. Brewing Projekt

Where: 1807 N Oxford Ave, Eau Claire

Eau Claire is known for having some of the top Wisconsin breweries, and it’s easy to see why with amazing craft brewery options like the Brewing Projekt.

The Brewing Projekt is all about bringing daring flavors and different cultures to its brews, which is why its craft beer is unlike any other. I recommend the Resist MilkShake IPA.

In addition to making some of the best craft beer from Wisconsin, the Brewing Projekt even makes its own seltzer.

It’s gluten-free and comes in several refreshing flavors, including my favorite: pina colada.

29. Sprecher Brewing Co.

Where: 701 W Glendale Ave, Glendale

Discover the delights of Wisconsin craft beer, close up shot of two hands holding glass beer mugs and about to clink them together

If you’re looking for the best craft breweries in Milwaukee and the surrounding area, you can’t go wrong with Sprecher Brewing Co.

Sprecher started in 1985, making it the oldest craft brewery in Milwaukee. With so many years of experience, you know you’re getting quality brews.

Since then, they’ve earned a reputation for making some of the best European-style beers brewed in Wisconsin.

Visitors can choose from a range of German, Austrian, and Belgian-style ales and lagers.

Sprecher’s is one of the best breweries for dates in the Milwaukee area. So stop by for a tour of the brewery and some of the best beers from Wisconsin, a bit to eat, or even some live music!

30. Raised Grain

Where: 1725 Dolphin Dr, Waukesha

A more recent discovery for me, Raised Grain has quickly become one of my favorite Wisconsin beer brands.

They offer one of the widest ranges of year-round and seasonal craft beers, making it the best brewery in Wisconsin for picky drinkers. I love the coffee-infused Black Walnut stout.

In addition to all their craft beers, visitors can enjoy a large menu with everything from tacos to burgers to pizza, and even some kid-friendly options.

I also think Raised Grain has some of the best brewery tours in Wisconsin as they genuinely love talking about the process and their beers.

Of course, you also get to try samples – and even walk away with a Raised Grain keepsake glass.

Why Should I Tour a Brewery in Wisconsin?

Breweries make a great day out for families and couples alike; many brewery tours end in a restaurant experience, and most have non-alcoholic kid-friendly drink options on tap.

Taking a brewery tour in Wisconsin can be a family fun day out and leave everyone happy. Wisconsin is known for beer, so it makes sense to find the best breweries in Wisconsin to tour and find the best craft beer.

Ranging from free to inexpensive, the experience often includes free beer! Many of them also offer the legendary Wisconsin beer cheese soup on their menus!

There are many amazing beer options in Wisconsin that are not the most popular Pabst, Schlitz, and Miller (which are great, but sure if you find yourself in Wisconsin, try as many beers as possible!).

Before Luke Combs plays in front of the 'best fans' for his Milwaukee concerts this week, he tours Miller Brewery and even shotguns a beer

B efore Luke Combs kicks off his "Growin' Up and Gettin' Old" tour in Milwaukee this week, he went on another kind of tour. One that is quintessentially Brew City.

Combs, one of country music's biggest stars, is playing two shows at American Family Field : One Friday and another Saturday. But ahead of that, he took a tour of the Miller Brewery . And, we got to tag along.

Yes, he was every bit as kindhearted, down-to-earth and genuine as he seems. And yes, he shotgunned a beer just like he does on stage. Except this time, he was hanging out on a brewhouse rooftop with the iconic giant red Miller sign and the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark as his backdrop.

Get daily updates on the Packers during the season.

Not only did Combs — a longtime Miller Lite fan and years-long partner — see where the magic happens, he also checked out the specialty packaging on cases and cans that's coming out in honor of his blockbuster tour.

"It's just surreal, you know?" Combs told the Journal Sentinel. "I feel like I get to live so many amazing, surreal moments. And, I'm really thankful for that for sure. It's crazy. It's crazy."

Here's what we learned about Combs' tour and what he got into on the Miller tour. And, how about his eight Academy of Country Music Awards nominations that were announced earlier this week? We asked him about those, too.

Luke Combs talks about his 'Growin' Up and Gettin' Old' tour and why he's kicking it off in the Midwest

A or A+ shows don't cut it for Combs. He's shooting for A++.

"I try to do everything I can do to take care of my voice, take care of myself, make sure that we're doing everything we can," Combs said. "People that come are the only reason we get to do what we do. Putting on an A++ show is really important to me."

About to embark on his 25-date stadium tour, he's excited — and "a little nervous."

"You feel like you're standing at the bottom of a mountain and you're looking at the top a little bit," he said.

But after last year's "Luke Combs World Tour," he said he feels more prepared for what's ahead of him.

"We've played everywhere all over the world," Combs said. "But, the Midwest, it feels like home to me. So, good place to start it."

HOW TO AVOID TRAFFIC: Luke Combs concerts could cause delays on I-94 this weekend

Combs, who grew up in North Carolina, hadn't been anywhere close to Milwaukee when he started his music career — his first plane ride came at age 25. But, he remembers his earlier stops up here fondly.

He opened for Blake Shelton at Summerfest in 2018 and made an appearance at Farm Aid at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in 2019.

"The Midwest is like the best fans in the world," Combs said. "I mean, honestly. People probably say that all the time."

But, that doesn't mean pulling out of the driveway Tuesday night wasn't hard after the "amazing" time he spent with his "awesome" wife Nicole and their two sons — Tex and Beau — these past few months. Fortunately, he won't have to miss his other half too long. She'll be headed up this way this weekend.

What will always make it onto Combs' setlist this time around? "The songs that people would expect," Combs shared.

"Playing all the hits," he said. "That's why people are there, and I want to give them what they want."

But, each night of the tour will have a different vibe.

Combs' opening acts Friday — in the order they'll hit the stage — are the Wilder Blue, Charles Wesley Godwin and Cody Jinks.

"Friday's more in the Americana, singer-songwriter world," Combs said. "So, our set reflects that a little bit. But, obviously, still playing all the hits."

Saturday's openers will be Colby Acuff, Drew Parker, Mitchell Tenpenny and Jordan Davis.

"Saturday night is more mainstream, Top 40 country stuff, which is what I do, really," Combs said.

Combs loves watching Jinks and Davis perform — they keep him honest, he said — and he knows they're going to kick some you know what.

The first opener will start at 5:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with gates opening at 5 p.m.

The parking lots will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tailgating will be permitted. Give yourself plenty of time to drive in and get through security.

There also will be a "Bootleggers Tailgate Party" at 3 p.m. Saturday with two up-and-comers picked by Combs and Nashville-based concert series Whiskey Jam: Ryan Larkins and Graham Barham. It'll take place at Am Fam Field's Third Base Plaza, and will be free to attend for Combs concert ticketholders, with food and drinks available to purchase.

Luke Combs' love for Miller Lite and his visit to Miller Brewery

After getting into Milwaukee Wednesday morning, Combs hung out at the Brewers stadium for a couple of hours, worked out, then was off to the Miller Brewery.

How long has Combs been a fan of Miller Lite? "Forever, probably."

"My dad's been drinking it for a long time," Combs said. "It was always around the house."

If his music career never worked out, he said, he would still be sporting a Columbia fishing shirt and drinking a Miller Lite somewhere in the world.

"That's what I would be doing anyways," he said. "So, I really wanted to go after things that I was already passionate about that felt natural and authentic to me. So, I'm very thankful for (Molson Coors) being receptive to have me on board. I feel super lucky."

Sporting a Brewers Barrelman hat, Combs and his team walked into a conference room on the brewery's complex Wednesday. He was met by a small group of longtime brewery employees and other Molson Coors staffers. The beer cases and cans with his new specialty packaging were displayed on tables.

The design features a ribbon that says "Beer Never Broke My Heart" wrapped in between the tuning pegs of a guitar. Combs' name is at the top of the headstock.

After everyone went around the room introducing themselves, they were instructed to suit up in PPE — yellow safety vests, glasses, hard hats, toe caps and headsets.

On Combs' VIP tour of the brewery, he got a first-hand — and at times, hands-on — look at the operations with facts and history lessons along the way.

The first stop was a packaging plant, where Combs met machinist Jeff Malecki who has "But they ain't seen us together" from Combs' song "Forever After All" tattooed across his arm.

The two shook hands and got a picture together. That would become a reoccurring scene throughout Combs' visit.

It seemed like every employee who crossed paths with Combs received a handshake. And, if they wanted a photo or autograph, they got those, too, without any hesitation.

In the warehouse, Combs saw cases with the specialty packaging sliding out of a machine — he pulled his phone out to document that — and stacks of those cases getting carried off on a pallet via forklift.

At one point, Combs stood in front of what looked like a mountain of the cases. "Get this one," he said to a photographer as he hugged the cases as far as his arms would stretch.

Later, he'd get to snag one of the cans right off of a quick-moving line.

He got a taste of that and a few different brewery roles, including one that involved flipping a cardboard box filled with unconstructed cases into place. A few cases snuck out the back, but not too shabby for a first-timer.

"Thanks for letting me do that," Combs said to the workers as he shook their hands. "Thanks for letting me be in the way."

Combs also tried his hand at adding hops, one of which was liquid. "Have y'all seen 'Superbad'?" Combs asked with a bucket of hops in hand.

It reminded him of the scene when McLovin was trying to buy booze at a liquor store and said to the cashier: "You know, I heard they recently decided to add more hops to it."

Toward the conclusion of the tour, Combs said he had a "truly amazing" time. But, his favorite part had to be the grand finale.

He got to go up on a brewhouse rooftop with striking views of the city, the home of the Brewers and that big red Miller sign.

Up there is where he shotgunned a beer in under 5 seconds, and had the honor of sampling an exclusive maturation stock that not many get to try.

"To be standing up here is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Combs said.

How about those eight ACM Awards nominations

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced earlier this week. Combs leads the nominations with eight , including entertainer of the year, male artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year, single of the year and music event of the year.

"It's really awesome," he said. "Always surprising, I think ... In a lot of ways, it feels like I've been doing this a lifetime. And, in a lot of ways, I feel like I've been doing it for six months. So, I feel like sometimes I'm so conflicted with knowing what to feel or think ... It's an honor. It's my wildest dreams coming true. So, I'm a very lucky guy every day."

A 2024 win via Combs nomination for entertainer of the year would clinch the coveted triple crown award, which consists of an entertainer of the year win plus wins in an act's respective new artist (male, female, duo, or group) and artist (male, female, duo or group) categories, a USA TODAY report said.

The event will air on Prime Video and the Amazon Music channel on Twitch live from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on May 16.

Piet Levy of the Journal Sentinel staff and USA TODAY contributed to this report.
