Southern Africa’s diamond in the rough, Zimbabwe has some of the most staggering scenery on the continent, from ancient geological landscapes to the great Zambezi River and world-famous Victoria Falls. Here, elephants are dwarfed by giant trees and we photograph wild dogs on foot.

The north of Zimbabwe falls into an action packed safari circuit including Victoria Falls, Mana Pools, Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Zambia’s Lower Zambezi. Despite its turbulent political history, Zimbabwe remains an unbelievable natural destination offering iconic photographic opportunities, and we know exactly the right places to go to make it happen.

Highlights of Zimbabwe

From $6,042 / per person sharing

This Zimbabwe safari starts and ends in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Our highlights of Zimbabwe Safari Package invites you to explore the country’s endless landscapes, iconic wildlife and natural wonders. You will have the opportunity to experience the best of Victoria Falls, Lake Kariba, Mana Pools National Park and Northern Hwange National Park on this 10-day, 9-night adventure.

I booked a private safari with Lance to Hwange. Our main goal was to photograph elephants in the open and we had many great opportunities to do so. Linkwasha was an absolute stunning lodge and a great recommendation from Lance. It was the perfect amount of Luxury to wild ratio that I like. Cannot wait for the next one, most likely South Luangwa! Read my African photographic safaris  FAQ and see Guest Testimonials .

Zimbabwe is a country that defies odds and despite suffering a destroyed economy, the wildlife thrives and the country has arguably the best safari guides on the continent. You will especially experience this on any of my Zimbabwe Mana Pools photo safaris or at Chitake Springs.

A Zimbabwe photo safari is the most adventurous safari you can do because you will photograph on foot.

Not being in a vehicle on a Zimbabwe photo safari really changes things and elevates adrenaline levels, no more so than at Chitake Springs on my Zimbabwe Mana Pools photo safari. It is not that it is dangerous, the Zimbabwe photo safari guides are the best trained in Africa. In fact, it is because they are so well trained that you will get to experience wildlife on foot on your Zimbabwe private photo safari.

Your ‘bespoke best of Zimbabwe’ photo safari will start with you taking in the vast plains of Hwange National Park. Here you will be gently introduced to the wild environment as photography is mainly done from a vehicle on this leg of your Zimbabwe photo safari. Your Hwange photo safari includes herds of Roan and Sable antelope and this is an indication of just how remote and wild this park is. A Hwange photo safari is also the best chance you have in Africa of seeing lion hunt elephant.

Your heart will race and you will feel like you have experienced the ultimate in terms of wildlife experiences .

Next on your bespoke best of Zimbabwe itinerary will be exploring the shores of Lake Kariba and photographing wild sunsets filled with dead trees and wildlife. You just don’t get more ‘Africa’ than this! Following the Zambezi River east on your ‘bespoke best of Zimbabwe’ photo safari, your journey takes a truly wild turn at Mana Pools where you will experience Africa’s wildlife in a new way – on foot. Photographing elephants and wild dog on foot is what a Zimbabwe Mana Pools photo safari is all about. The camps can be basic on a Mana Pools photo safari but the wild encounters are simply exhilarating. There are also luxury lodges and often a combination of a mobile camp and a luxury lodge is the way to go on your bespoke Mana Pools photo safari leg. A few nights fly camping at a very special spring in a remote part of Mana Pools National Park is a must.

If getting up close and personal with Africa’s wild animals is what you want, then a Zimbabwe private photo safari is the one for you.

Zimbabwe Photo Tours

Zimbabwe remains an under-visited yet richly rewarding african photographic safari destination..

Aside from the world-renowned Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park and Mana Pools, the country is also blessed with diverse habitats, ranging from the granite hills of the Matopos, to vast areas of pristine bushveld and woodland, to the majestic mountains, lush forests and beautiful rivers of the Eastern Highlands. As such, there is much to attract the traveller, from wildlife viewing and adrenalin adventures to delving into the history of the Zimbabwean people going back thousands of years.

It is in the more unspoilt and peaceful northern parks that we concentrate our safari operations. The Zambezi has an exceptional variety of spectacular scenery as well as one of the world’s natural wonders: the Victoria Falls. The national parks along the Zambezi are legendary; our concession lies in Mana Pools, located on the floodplains of Africa’s Great Rift Valley and offering superb wildlife viewing.

Along the Botswana border the easternmost tongues of the Kalahari sands creep into the country and mix with the teak forests of the interior, so that desert-adapted animals share the same habitat with woodland species. Hwange National Park is home to some of southern Africa’s last great elephant, buffalo and sable herds, and Wilderness’ Makalolo concession within Hwange is a truly wild area where animals have no restrictions and can migrate back and forth. This area also offers Zimbabwe’s best summer game viewing.

There are currently no set departures to Zimbabwe. Please contact the ORYX office at [email protected] and we will be delighted to tailor-make your dream Photo Tour to Zimbabwe.

If you’ve ever dreamed of photographing big cats, elephants, and birds on iconic plains of Africa, check-out this wonderful opportunity! Wildside Nature Tours’ photo instructor extraordinaire Lee Hoy and senior safari guide Adrian Binns  team-up to guide an outstanding Zimbabwe-Zambia photo safari in January 2023. There are 3 spaces remaining for an unforgettable, immersive experience among some of Africa’s most wild and amazing landscapes. Photographers enjoy up-close encounters with a wide range of wildlife amid stunning scenery, with ample time to observe, learn, and capture images of a lifetime.

Hwange, Zimbabwe’s flagship National Park, is a true wilderness area teeming with large grazing herds and ever-present predators. Abundant elephant, buffalo, giraffe, sable antelope, gemsbok and wildebeest move through grasslands, followed by lion, cheetah and endangered wild dog. We’ll explore the savanna and stake-out salt pans to photograph animals as they engage in their daily struggle to survive.

Elephants chasing lions away in front of Davison’s Camp

At water holes we’ll enjoy up-close encounters with elephants of all ages. These huge, majestic animals are mesmerizing, providing countless photo ops from ground-level hides, some just meters from our camp.

Avian diversity is stunning, allowing great chances to observe and photograph waders, raptors, vultures, and many more. We’ll have ample time to photograph birds in action, flying or foraging in the landscape.

White-crowned Lapwing

Our safari wraps-up in Zambia, where we track White Rhinoceros on foot, visit Victoria Falls and cruise the Zambezi River looking for bee-eaters, lapwings, African Skimmers and the shy African Finfoot.

Join our Zimbabwe-Zambia photo safari in January 2023, for an unforgettable wilderness experience!

Everything You Need to Know About Planning a Photo Safari in Africa

zimbabwe photo safari

Frequently Asked Questions

We get a lot of great questions from our clients who are interested in making photography a central element of their safari experience. Here are a few common questions we’ll answer for you in this piece:

  • What are the best times of year for photographers to visit Africa?
  • How much time do you recommend we spend at each camp?
  • Can Extraordinary Journeys help me find a specialist photographic guide to accompany my safari?
  • Will the camps have specially-equipped photographic vehicles?
  • How close will I get to the wildlife?
  • Where can I get access to computers and editing software to use while on safari?
  • What are the luggage allowances for camera equipment?
  • Will the camps have charging areas for my batteries?
  • Can I bring a drone?

When to Visit Africa for a Photographic Safari (and What to Expect)

Generally speaking, we advocate for a slow-travel approach whenever possible, especially on safari. The less time you spend in transit, the more time you’ll have to enjoy your destination, get to know the guides, and—best of all—encounter incredible wildlife. We recommend you spend at least three nights at each camp.

The best time of year to safari really depends on where and when you travel in Africa. Usually, you’ll want to travel in the driest season when the safari experience is most dramatic, typically between June and October.

If you can withstand the heat, we think October is the most dramatic time for photography in Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

In East Africa, photographers love timing their safaris with the Great Wildebeest Migration from June through October.

We especially love East Africa from late September through December. There are fewer crowds, and even though it can be a bit damp at times, the rains only add to the drama. Another great time to visit East Africa is in January and February.

That said, some photographers love the green season: dramatic skies, clouds to soften the light, fewer crowds, longer days, and less dust.

Where to Go for Photography on Safari

Learn from the experts: camps with photographers in residence.

Three of our all-time favorite camps with in-house photography experts are:

  • Alex Walker’s Serian collection in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti
  • African Bush Camps at Bumi Hills Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe
  • The Jackal & Hide from Natural Selections, located in the heart of the Okavango Delta

Get the VIP Treatment: Hire a Private Specialist Guide

For an even more exclusive photography experience, consider hiring a specialist photographic guide. Here are three of our favorite options.

Wild Studio with Great Plains Conservation — Botswana & Kenya

Wild Studio was founded by world-renowned wildlife filmmakers and photographers, and the expertise of their guides matches that pedigree. Still, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer, you’re welcome at Wild Studio. Your private guide will educate you on photographic techniques while also providing key insights and time-earned perspective on the area’s wildlife, their habitats, and the importance of preserving the ecosystem. And at the end of your safari, a storyboarding exercise helps you tell the story of your safari and help spread the message about conservation once you return home.

Tafika Camp — Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park

A New Zealander by birth, Bryan Jackson visited Africa for the first time in the 1970s and never left. Now co-owner and Safari Manager of Remote Africa Safaris, Brian is based at Tafika Camp in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park . He has been guiding in the Luangwa Valley for over 20 years and provides exceptional photographic expertise for specialized photographic safaris, thanks to his keen eye and decades spent honing his craft.

Depending on the size of your group, the fee to hire Bryan Jackson is $400 to $700 per day and includes a private photographic vehicle.

The Hide — Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park

The Hide has an in-house photographer/videographer, Neil Fairlie, a native Zimbabwean and experienced wildlife documentary filmmaker. While Neil is based at The Hide , he’s also available to guests at Changa Safari Camp . Neil can guide tours for groups or individuals, beginners and professionals alike. The fee for groups of 1-4 travelers to hire Neil is $420 per day (for a full day), including a private vehicle and guide, in addition to Niel.

Leave Your Gear at Home: Camps that Provide Cameras for You

Special offer: wilderness safaris.

Wilderness Safaris has an incredible partnership with Olympus . If you stay at a Wilderness property in Botswana, Namibia, or Zimbabwe, you’ll have access to a limited number of camera sets to use throughout your safari itinerary. These sets are free of charge and available on a first-come, first-served basis for exclusive use by guests of Wilderness Safari-managed properties.

The benefits are twofold:

  • Travelers get access to world-class Olympus equipment and knowledgeable Wilderness guides
  • The partnership supports a scholarship program for secondary and tertiary education through Wilderness’s non-profit partner, Children in the Wilderness .

If this program is of interest to you, get in touch, so we can reserve a set of Olympus gear for you!

Below are a few properties we recommend for travelers interested in taking advantage of the photography amenities on offer with Wilderness (note: Bisate is not part of the Wilderness-Olympus partnership).

Okavango Delta, Botswana

  • Mombo Camp & Little Mombo – Each room has a camera.
  • Vumbura Plains – A few sets (camera with lenses) plus one pair of binoculars will be available in the main area. Bonus: Wilderness offers a slideshow for guests explaining the partnership with photographic tips and images.

Linyanti, Botswana

Lessons will be on offer in the sunken hide during midday when the hide is most active. An alternative option is a photographic experience on the Queen Silvia barge. Skeleton Coast, Namibia

  • Serra Cafema , Hoanib , and Little Kulala – Cameras will be available in camp for guests to use in their own time, with a booklet available explaining how to use the camera, including some photographic tips and tricks. Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

  • Bisate Lodge – A couple of camera sets will be available for guests to use on their gorilla treks. The camera will be pre-set in order to ensure that guests get the optimal photographic experience. Tips for photographing gorillas will also be provided.

Beyond the Wilderness-Olympus partnership, several Great Plains Conservation camps cater to photographers and can provide a camera for you. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Zarafa Camp – Linyanti, Botswana
  • Selinda Camp – Linyanti, Botswana
  • Duba Plains Camp – Okavango Delta, Botswana

Learn Everything You Need to Know: Specialist Photo Camps

If you want to learn how to use your camera to its fullest capabilities, a specialist photo camp might be perfect for you. Here are three of our favorites:

Pangolin Chobe Hotel – Chobe National Park, Botswana

For professional, passionate, knowledgeable photographic guides, look no further than Pangolin Chobe Hotel. You’re guaranteed a warm welcome and helpful attention to your photography, regardless of your skills or experience. Plus, incredible wildlife at Chobe make for a wonderfully immersive safari experience.

Zimanga Private Game Reserve – KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Zimanga offers state-of-the-art photographic hides , built in partnership with “The Invisible Wildlife Photographer,” Bence Mate . These hides provide visitors extraordinary opportunities to observe African wildlife. Additionally, Zimanga’s game drive vehicles have a limit of two passengers per row, ensuring ample space for your gear and maneuverability.

Photograph in Comfort: Camps with Photographic Vehicles

For the ultimate experience of comfort, amenities, and exceptional access to great photographic opportunities, a specially-designed photographic vehicle may be just what you’re looking for.

Depending on the property, your vehicle may feature:

  • Space for 3-4 photographers (and their equipment)
  • Drop-down sides for photographers to lie down and get low-angle photographs
  • Three 360º swivel seats, one per “row” – seats also lean right back if required
  • Only front and back bars to hold up the roofless obstruction of view for photography
  • Beanbags and foam camera rest (photographers advised to bring their own tripods)
  • Vehicle kit with a fridge, charging points, roll-down sides for bad weather, etc.
  • Lowered center console with raised lid for quick and easy access to lens changes
  • Lowered snorkel for better forward views
  • Radio aerial at the back of the vehicle for better forward views
  • Specially-designed pop-off roof (choose whether you want it on or off!)
  • Additional leg room

zimbabwe photo safari

Several camps offer photographic safari vehicles. Here are our favorites.

  • Asilia Africa has photography vehicles based in the Maasai Mara which service all their Mara Camps. They have one in the Central Serengeti for use at Dunia Camp and the new Namiri Plains , one in Northern Serengeti for Sayari Camp (and seasonal Asilia migration camps), and also one in Ruaha for use at Jabali Ridge and Kwihala Camp.
  • Mombo Camp – Okavango Delta, Botswana
  • Mashatu Lodge – Mashatu Game Reserve, Botswana
  • Ngala Safari Lodge – Timbavati Game Reserve, Kruger National Park, South Africa
  • Phinda Vlei Lodge – KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
  • Phinda Zuka Lodge – KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
  • Phinda Homestead – KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Get Up Close to the Action: Camps with Excellent Photographic Hides

  • Ol Donyo Lodge (Amboseli and Chyulu Hills National Parks, Kenya) offers two photographic hides, one at ground level and one sunken container that faces the water hole in front of the lodge.
  • An elephant-proof ground-level hide based at a waterhole, perfect for both beginner and professional photographers
  • Semi-permanent hides that are regularly relocated to drying waterholes in the riverbeds characteristic of Mashatu.
  • An infinity bird hide where you can photograph seed-eating birds at eye level
  • A hide based at the white-fronted bee-eater colony
  • Singita Pamushana (Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe) offers a hide near a waterhole that can comfortably accommodate six guests and their guides. The hide even includes an en-suite flush toilet !
  • Linkwasha Camp (Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe) offers their Photo Hub experience at their sunken hide. This post-brunch event includes an informative slideshow and cameras available for guest use at tea time.
  • Little Makalolo (Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe) offers a Photo Hub experience similar to Linkwasha’s, but the location is at their log pile hide.
  • Chamilandu Bush Camp (South Luangwa National Park, Zambia) has a hide that looks over an oxbow lagoon behind the camp, the perfect location for spotting bathing elephants.
  • Kaingo Camp (South Luangwa National Park, Zambia) offers photographic hides regularly used by National Geographic, the BBC, and the Discovery Channel for wildlife photo shoots and documentaries. Kaingo features both a hippo hide and an elephant hide.

  • Chiawa Camp (Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia) offers two hides, one near the edge of the Zambezi and one near the camp’s water tank overflow. We especially love the option of a night safari in the second hide where guests can use an infrared spotlight and night-vision monoculars to view any nocturnal (or diurnal) wildlife stopping to drink nearby.

Polish Your Work: Camps with Editing Tools

If you want to head home with perfectly-edited photos ready for printing, several camps offer computers with a full suite of editing tools for guest use. If this sounds appealing to you, we recommend:

  • Singita Ebony Lodge – Sabi Sands South Africa
  • Singita Boulders Lodge – Sabi Sands, South Africa
  • Singita Faru Faru – Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
  • Singita Lebombo Lodge – Kruger National Park, South Africa
  • Singita Kwitonda Lodge – Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
  • Singita Pamushana – Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe

Keeping It Simple: Photographic Day Tours

You don’t have to build your entire safari around photography to still enjoy some incredible moments behind your camera. For a lighter take on the full-fledged photographic safari, we recommend a day tour! You’ll get to take in amazing views of wildlife and learn to make better use of your camera while you’re at it.

Here are two of our favorite tours:

Chase the Sun Peninsula Tour in Cape Town

This tour gives you a fantastic overview of Cape Town’s highlights, and the route is scheduled to take advantage of optimum lighting conditions in each stop!

Photograph technicolor bathing boxes at Muizenberg Beach, quaint streets and brightly-colored fishing boats at Kalk Bay, jackass penguins at Boulder’s Beach, the iconic Cape Point, and the granite and sandstone cliff face stretching along Chapman’s Peak Drive.

This eight-hour tour includes lunch and is limited to just 12 guests.

zimbabwe photo safari

3-Hour Photo Safari River Cruise Along the Chobe River

For a half-day photographic excursion, we recommend this cruise along the Chobe. Opt for an early morning cruise (departure is usually around 6 a.m.) or an afternoon one (departure is about 3 p.m.). Either way, the itinerary is planned around optimum lighting conditions, so you’re sure to get some beautiful shots. The boat provides a unique vantage point.

The cameras supplied for this tour are Canon 80D bodies fitted with 150-600mm Sigma telephoto lenses. If you’re a beginner photographer, the photo hosts on board will set you up and help you use the camera to its fullest potential.

Special Mention

Every camp featured in this piece offers something special and well-suited to photography-minded travelers. But if we had to choose a #1 favorite destination, it would be Tswalu in South Africa’s Southern Kalahari.

The colors in this desert game reserve are stunning, and we love that they offer private vehicles. This is also a favorite destination of one of our expert photographer clients, JP Pollak. Check out his rave review here .

What to Pack: Essential Gear

We all love our iPhones, but we promise: Apple will fail you when on safari. For optimum results and an enjoyable experience, we recommend you pack the following:

  • DSLR camera
  • A long lens (an 18-200mm is the recommended minimum) or an all-in-one camera with 20x zoom
  • Tripod, especially for after-dark shots
  • Monopod, especially if you’ll be in a more open vehicle with fewer surfaces to support your camera
  • A bean bag on which to rest your telephoto lens (pro-tip: you can bring the bag empty and fill it in camp with rice or dried beans)
  • Charging gear: adapter, power strip (though most camps have these), and possibly an inverter for the truck (some have outputs)
  • A sturdy dust-proof camera bag or case
  • Lens cleaning equipment
  • Extra batteries (2+) – you’ll be able to charge them in camp, but it’s best to have extras while out in the vehicle
  • Extra memory cards
  • Portable memory card back-up devices (no laptop required!)
  • Wide-angle lens (not essential, but great to have if you want some landscape shots or close-ups of interesting insects)

zimbabwe photo safari

What NOT to Pack

Too much luggage.

We recommend that you pack simply and sensibly for your photographic safari, keeping extra suitcases to a minimum.

And remember, several camps can provide camera equipment for you (see above).

Pro-tip: While some photographers prefer to bring along a tripod (especially for long-exposure shots at night), it’s not an essential. Most camps have bean bags to help stabilize your camera in the vehicle.

If you plan on bringing camera gear from home, airlines have several different ways to accommodate extra luggage, depending on the carrier. You may be asked to:

  • Book a freight seat for an additional 20kg to 75kg, depending on carrier and route (some carriers charge the child rate, others charge 75% of the full fare)
  • Book an XL seat which allows an extra 15kg (fees vary by route)
  • Pay a weight-based fee for extra luggage
  • Check your bags for transport in the luggage hold under the plane for an additional fee (though with fragile camera equipment, you may want to book a freight seat)

While we understand that drones are great for aerial shots and hard-to-reach places, they’re prohibited in most National Parks and strongly discouraged elsewhere.

The general consensus is that while technically, you might be able to use a drone on safari, it’s best not to bother.

Enjoy all you can from a safari vehicle, photographic hide, or hot air balloon (and there’s plenty to shoot from there!). The drone will be there waiting for you when you get home.

A Few More Important Tips

Be sure to practice with your equipment before you arrive, especially if you’re buying a new camera and/or accessories. The last thing you want is to be fumbling with unfamiliar gear when you could be getting that amazing shot!

Try Some New Techniques

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned expert, it never hurts to pick up a few new photographic tricks. We love these guides to photography on safari:

  • Sabi Sabi’s Wildlife Photography Tips
  • Singita’s Top 5 Wildlife Photography Tips from our Field Guides

And be sure to check out our own ask-the-experts piece, featuring the photo safari advice of four Extraordinary Journeys clients .

Shoot Throughout the Day

Dawn and dusk are obviously the best times to photograph wildlife. The early mornings are worth it! But consider shooting after dark, too. Just remember a tripod for those long-exposure shots (think starry night skies in the deserts of Namibia).

Put That Camera Down

We know you’re here for the photos, but once in a while, it’s important to get out from behind the camera and just enjoy what’s unfolding before you.

Remember Family & Friends

If you’re traveling with loved ones, be sure to snap a few shots of them, too! No need to make everybody shuffle around in awkward group poses, either. Candids of your kids, spouse, or friends observing wildlife and marveling at the beautiful scenery might just be some of the best shots you take home.

Practice Cultural Sensitivity

As with any safari, the local people and cultures are as much a part of the experience as the wildlife. Be sensitive to the customs, social mores, and preferences of the people you encounter, especially when it comes to photographing them. Some groups may welcome your camera while others may find your candid shots offensive. When in doubt, ask your guide what is appropriate. They’ll help you avoid any awkward encounters.

What our clients say

The careful selection of locations/lodges and the extremely knowledgeable and professional local guide made the trip through parts of Botswana a real highlight. The photographer James Clifford knows the places and positions where the animals can be put in the right light and imparts a lot of interesting information about the nature and behaviour of the animals in this unique environment. I returned home with many great pictures and numerous unique impressions.

Botswana Desert & Delta, November 2023

The Zambia trip in June 2023 was marked by many great animal encounters and beautiful scenery. I especially remember a pair of leopards, about one year old, who were playing with each other and I even managed to take a picture of the female sailing over the male. Wonderful! Equally impressive, however, were the beautiful morning scenes. Antelopes and even lions presented themselves in the ground fog at sunrise! Once again, Thomas and Hannes took excellent care of us, and the local guides also did a good job. This makes us want to do more!

Photo Tour Two Rivers, Zambia, June 2023

The photo trip Botswana up close exceeded all my expectations. I experienced and photographed countless unforgettable moments. Hannes' professional guidance was brilliant. The whole "surrounding" with a super lodge, extremely good safari guides and the cozy group made this trip the perfect experience. Thank you. I can only recommend this photo tour to everyone.

Botswana upclose, October 2022

It was my first photo tour to Africa. The diverse - and thanks to the driving skills of the guides also up close - encounters in the private game reserve were impressive: leopards, cheetahs, lions, hyenas, jackals, elephants, giraffes, antelopes, zebras, monkeys, bee-eaters, eagles, vultures and much more. With Hannes Lochner we also had an excellent photo guide with us, who was able to share a lot of his experience with us. That makes you want to do more!

Botswana Upclose, October 2022

Amazing experiences with truly professional guides. Super nice wild-life at a close distance. Cool and impressive lodge and food. Think Tina Turner wrote your song: "Simply the best".

Zimanga in Focus, June 2022

As usual, the tour was excellently organised. The lodge and the game reserve in southern Botswana are simply top. The game reserve has a great variety of species and a high density of predatory cats, which made the time pass (too) quickly. I can truly recommend this trip to anyone interested in wildlife.

Botswana Upclose, October 2021

The tour was planned and carried out professionally as usual. The passionate photographer Hannes Locher looked after us very well. I was thrilled by his passion for cats and his humorous manner. Gladly again!

Cats of the Kalahari, October 2021

The trip to the beautiful Kalahari was a dream, many animals, wonderful landscapes and moods. Hannes looked after us perfectly in his humorous way and helped us to take great pictures. Definitely recommended!

The smell of the first big rain after the dry season I will remember forever! And the pictures of it are in my photo album and in my heart. Pictures that have become even more unique thanks to Hannes Lochner. It is a privilege to discover such an exciting area as the Kalahari. Even more so when Hannes Lochner is there. He showed us with humor and patience countless photo tricks and we were able to benefit from his enormous knowledge about photography, animals and nature. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Travelling with Amazing Views and their photo guides is perfect. Not only are we at the photo hotspots at the right time, we also get great professional advice and support. And peace and quiet when the rest of the masses of tourists are out and about. The support was unrivalled. We were in very good and experienced hands with both Hannes and Floyd. Hannes was perfect and had a lot of patience with us. He was happy to share his knowledge with us. He is a very enthusiastic photographer himself and this rubbed off well on the group. The length of the trip was perfect, there were many new impressions and experiences that I still have to digest, so longer would almost be too much of a good thing. I loved the trip, despite the sometimes very early hour.

Secrets of the desert, March 2024

My expectations of this trip were very high, as I had already travelled to Namibia three times before as a self-driver. In the end, I flew home with many unforgettable impressions and my expectations were exceeded by far! A perfectly organised trip with great accommodation, scenic highlights and a fascinating animal world (whether Little Five or Big Five) - from the first to the last day. There was a lot of input from Hannes on how to take the perfect photo, so that at the end everyone flew home with successful photos in their luggage. This trip definitely makes you want more! A big thank you to Jenny and Thomas for the great organisation and Hannes for the great support on site. It was great fun travelling with you. The next trip is already planned...

Kristina & Kerstin

We were able to travel to Namibia with Amazing Views for the second time since 2019. Although many things became more complex due to Covid-19, the organisation was smooth from A to Z. The Namib, the Dead Vlei, all the Oryx antelopes, helicopter flights, the countless evening scenes were simply fabulous - and as a bonus, we were virtually alone in many places. It could not have been better. And the Okonjima Game Reserve at the end was the absolute icing on the cake for us.

Secrets of the desert, March 2021

As always, excellently organized trip to the Kalahari with the guidance of Hannes Lochner. His knowledge of the Kalahari and photography gives even experienced wildlife photographers a final tip for a very special photo. Glad to travel at any time again with Hannes and Amazing Views.

Cats of the Kalahari, February 2020

I joined for this trip directly after the cats of the Kalahari: the contrasts of both trips (Kalahari: desert steppes in beige versus Mashatu: rich green partly with yellow flower carpet) are fantastic! Very good mentoring by Hannes and Thomas, who can give even experienced photographers a tip or two. Very comfortable lodge with excellent staff, especially the local guides are to be emphasized.

Botswana's Best Kept Secret, February 2020

This was my seventh photo safari, but the first time during the rainy season. Seeing the different animals and birds in a green landscape is a unique experience. Thanks to the excellent guides from the lodge, who made sure that the rainy season had no negative impact on the number and quality of sightings of cats of prey, birds and other animals. The photo tour guidance by Hannes Lochner and Thomas was excellent, as usual for Amazing Views. Many thanks!

excellent organization everything worked smoothly- breath-taking camp with best food and loving hospitality - perfect driver chosen who took us through thick and thin and to the most beautiful places - an unforgettable journey

Since it was my first time on a photo safari, I was overwhelmed by the many impressions of the animals. The rainy season in Botswana was a pleasant travel time and the sight of the flower carpet was unique. The local driver and the guide were very keen to show us as many animals as possible. Thomas and Hannes Lochner always had good advice for taking pictures, thank you very much for the beautiful trip.

Botswana's Best Kept Secret, Februar 2020

After Namibia, Botswana, India and Spitsbergen, "Untouched Africa" was my 5th trip with Amazing Views. I was totally thrilled again, the organization as well as the photographer James Gifford were extremely good. We were able to observe and photograph the animals - especially elephants - respectfully and yet from close up. Many thanks for unforgettable days.

Untouched Africa Zimbabwe, October 2019

Kerstin & kristina.

So far it was the most beautiful Africa trip with Amazing Views. So close to the animals, countless elephants, on a safari from early in the morning until late in the evening - it was simply a dream. Animals so close - you never forget that. And then in addition the best guide James at your side - and the adventure is perfect. Top organization from A (Amazing) - Z (Zimbabwe)!

Untouched Africa Zimbabwe, September 2019

Zimbabwe is an unforgettable experience, far away from mass tourism, with intense closeness to wild nature combined with exceptional hospitality in the lodges. James Gifford supported and inspired us all tirelessly with his vast experience of wildlife as well as his photographic skills. Now all our cameras are professionally set up, thank you James!

This was our first trip with Amazing Views and I can only say that it was very well organized. Hannes Lochner is a great photographer and an extremely likeable person. He showed us "his Kalahari", which is so different from the usual safari destinations. Many thanks to Hannes and the Amazing Views team.

Photo tour Cats of the Kalahari, August 2019

For the second time after 2019, we were able to travel to Namibia along with Amazing Views. Although Covid-19 made a lot of things more complicated, the organisation was smooth from A-Z. The Namib, the Dead Vlei, all the Oryx antelopes, helicopter flights, the countless evening moods were just fabulously great - and as a bonus we were virtually alone in many places. It couldn't have been better. And the Okonjima Game Reserve at the end was the absolute icing on the cake for us.

An excellently organised trip to the Kalahari with on-site support by the nature and wildlife photographer Hannes Lochner, who left no question unanswered and gave valuable tips on the respective camera model, the settings and the composition of the pictures. Pleasant accommodation, delicious food and time spent together rounded off the whole photo safari positively. Recommended for beginners as well as advanced photographers. Anytime again with Hannes Lochner and Amazing Views.

Cats of the Kalahari, August 2019

I have been to Botswana with Amazing Views before, I was also lucky enough to go on the first trip to Churchill to see the Polar Bear babies. All trips were unforgettable. Now again, to travel to Botswana during the rainy season was awesome for me. To photograph the animals between the lush green and yellow flowers, and to see them rolling around in it was fantastic. Plants, which I had thought to be dead in October, came back to life. Unique and an unforgettable experience. The trip was as usual, very well organized and everything went like clockwork. The lodge was super. Excellent support by Thomas and Hannes Lochner, who explained or showed with a lot of patience again and again the right adjustments and the right perspective. Not to forget the drivers and trackers who tried tirelessly to fulfil our wishes. I am thrilled. Many thanks to all.

Botswana's Best Kept Secret, February 2019

A great trip over four outstanding, but also very different stations within the Okavango Delta. Both the driving and the photo guides provided unforgettable moments and helped with words and deeds to "shoot" fantastic photos. My rather high expectations were even exceeded. For a wonderful trip, many thanks to Amazing Views!

Botswana Wildlife Explorer, October 2018

Reto & marlene.

"Amazing Views" lives up to its name. We took home unforgettable impressions from a varied, very well organized and exclusive tour to a fantastic wildlife area. Thomas and James led the group in a friendly and professional manner and knew how to respond to each participant individually. We felt very comfortable, even though the hyenas, hippos and elephants regularly visited our camp at night. Predicated as very recommendable ... actually a must

Sonja & Jürgen

We were back in Botswana after 30 years and felt wonderfully looked after by Thomas and James, and the whole team of Letaka Safaris. We would never have imagined such a great trip. From the competent photo and tour guide of James to the extraordinary beautiful campsites and the interaction with the nice fellow travellers, there was nothing to complain about. We can only recommend everyone to join this trip. To Amazing Views, you are top!

The Amazing Views have organized an absolutely great trip. Letaka Safaris offered a great organization. The rangers are very good drivers and very successful with their game drives. Their great knowledge in interpreting footprints and the perception and interpretation of animal sounds was terrific, so that we had many impressive moments while discovering this animal world in such a great landscape. With James, the whole thing was topped: an extremely good photographer, with a knowledge he was able to convey very well. I have profited enormously from him. His warm way of leading the group was absolutely terrific. A great trip with unique impressions and pure emotions. Thank you all for this experience, it is unforgettable.

A very well organized, "little" adventure which - fortunately away from the mass tourism streams - gave me many impressive, some touching and moving, several unique moments in the African wilderness. The photographer, James, not only has an excellent feeling for the motif and the right moment, but also for the different needs and requirements of the individual participants. All in all a successful trip, which not only fully met my expectations but in some aspects even exceeded them.

Botswana Wildlife Explorer, October 2019

The trip was very well organized, and the accommodations were great. The guidance of James Gifford was again very good. He knows how to give you good tips in a pleasant way and makes every effort to ensure that everyone in the group gets their money's worth. The Bushwalks were a new but sensational experience for me. Getting close to a bull elephant at about 2 m and being able to take pictures will probably leave a lifelong impression on me. Many thanks to James and Amazing Views for this exciting trip!

Untouched Africa, September 2018

I liked the photo tourUntouched Africa very much. It was top organized and excellently guided by James Gifford. The Victoria Falls are impressive and the richness of species in Hwange and Mana Pools is great. A highlight was a short bushwalk in Mana Pools, which made it possible to photograph a passing bull elephant from a distance of two meters! Many thanks to James and Amazing Views for this great trip!

Untouched Africa, September 2019

As a repeat offender, I have already been on the road with Amazing Views several times! As always, the tour was very well organized. Expectations are exceeded again and again. Best guides guarantee for an unforgettable experience! Absolutely recommendable! - A big praise to Thomas and Jennifer! - Keep going!

Namibia, November 2018

Traveling with Amazing Views is the best. The most beautiful spots are discovered and photographed, and the coaching is unique. Each participant is picked up and promoted at his or her level. It was and is amazing with amazing views! Travelling with you has a huge potential for addiction. Hardly at home you want to book a new trip right away. You will not get rid of me so quickly. Sorry! 😉

Zimbabwe Safari Guide

Where & when to go, and what to see on safari in zimbabwe.

Interested in a Zimbabwe safari? Read on below for the full low down…

Located between the mighty Zambezi and Limpopo rivers, landlocked Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most pristine countries. The country borders Botswana , Mozambique, South Africa , and Zambia, and is best known for the magnificent spectacle of the Victoria Falls – a wonder of the world.

Having gone through decades of social unrest during the Mugabe era, Zimbabwe now openly welcomes tourists to the country.  Zimbabweans, as a rule, are friendly and warm people, the country sees fewer tourists than its neighbours, the game reserves are virtually untouched by mankind, and the guides are excellent. All this makes Zimbabwe a top – if under-attended -safari destination.

Alongside some of Africa’s best game viewing the country boasts its fair share of epic African scenery. The name Zimbabwe is derived from the incredible stone structures of the Great Zimbabwe ruins , a World Heritage Site, and the country has a further four World Heritage Sites, including Victoria Falls, the conservation area of Mana Pools and the spectacular granite Matobo Hills.

The central and western parts of the country are made up of mostly savannah grassland, with tropical evergreen forests in the eastern highlands and wonderful rock formations in the north. Whether you’re visiting for a safari or simply to take in the scenery, Zimbabwe offers a fantastic variety.

Self-drive safaris are an option in most national parks in Zimbabwe, though to enjoy full access to the most remote (and tourist-free!) areas you’ll need a 4WD car or jeep. If you fancy taking a tour or arranging your own guide and/or driver have a look at our list of safari tour companies in Zimbabwe before arrival in the country.

Experience the victoria falls.

victoria falls from the air

Forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the 110 meter tall waterfall is one of the seven wonders of the world for good reason. Over 400,000 tourists visit Victoria Falls annually, to watch the Zambezi plummet over a cliff quite spectacularly.

Big five spotting

Zimbabwe Safari Guide 2

Go big five spotting at Hwange – Zimbabwe’s most famous national park. With raised viewing platforms of waterholes teeming with wildlife, Hwange is a park that almost always delivers for game. But seeing all the big five in one game drive? That will be a lot harder!

Take a Zambezi wildlife cruise

zambezi-river-cruise

Downstream from the Victoria Falls, the Zambezi – one of Africa’s mightiest rivers – flows through Zimbabwe’s Matusadona and Mana Pools national parks, home to hippos, rhinos and birdlife. There’s plenty of opportunities to hop on to a boat of some type to enjoy the wildlife whilst floating down the river.

Relax lakeside at Kariba

lake kariba sunrise reflections

Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made lake, stretching 226 km, and forming part of the border between and Zambia and Zimbabwe. As with the all of Africa’s Great Lakes, Kariba offers spectacular views, stunning sunsets, great fishing, and is a wonderful spot to simply relax and reflect on your African adventure.

Best time to safari in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a year-round safari destination, though depending on where you go and what you plan to see (and how much rain and heat you can take), you may want to plan on visiting at a specific time of year.

Peak season to visit Zimbabwe is from May to October. At this time of year, Victoria Falls is in full flow and at its most impressive, while the wildlife viewing is excellent as animals concentrate around waterholes and rivers. With peak season comes crowds of tourists, though as the temperature rises to the 30s from July to October there are fewer visitors to contend with away from Victoria Falls.

The rainy season – made up predominantly of afternoon showers – begins in November or December, and lasts into March. Although some camps around Hwange close for the rainy season fthe park and many lodges remain open. This is a great time for a crowd-free safari with the added bonus of migratory birds. At this time lots of wildlife is born and the dry Zimbabwean bush becomes green and lush. Water levels in the Zambezi are low through the rainy season, making for better whitewater rafting on the Zambezi.

National parks in Zimbabwe

Over 15% of Zimbabwe’s land area is protected, with most of the resulting national parks in Zimbabwe including some form of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although Zimbabwe – and Zimbabwean wildlife – has seen some tough times in recent years, the tourism industry is open for business, and wildlife populations are slowly increasing to former levels. Zimbabwe is the premier destination in the world to see huge elephant herds and black rhinos .

Zimbabwe safaris

An expert guide to the best safari camps in zimbabwe.

Anthony Ham

Anthony Ham

  • In this guide
  • Best safaris
  • Need to know
  • How it works

I first came on safari in Zimbabwe in 2003 and I’ve been coming back as often as I can, in my role as a travel journalist and guidebook author.

When it comes to Zimbabwe, the question people most often ask me is: why? In a region of safari big-hitters, what makes Zimbabwe stand out from neighbouring South Africa , Zambia , and Botswana ?

For me, safari in Zimbabwe has always felt like a double-concentrated version of the Southern African experience. The country is considerably smaller than its neighbours, with a small but elite portfolio of national parks. It’s easy to travel around, and has impeccably high levels of professionalism across the local safari industry.

And for historical reasons that have nothing to do with wildlife or tourism, Zimbabwe flies well under the radar, even compared to the relatively niche Botswana next door. It’s the kind of place where the joy of seeing wildlife is rarely tainted by having to enjoy those animals through crowds of vehicles.

The main drawback of going on safari here is the backdrop of historical political instability. What keeps visitor numbers low is also what has made a visit here unpredictable in the past. Those days seem to be behind a country that made headlines for all the wrong reasons, but which is now one of the best places to go on safari in Africa.

Mana Pools zimbabwe 1

Take a hike in Mana Pools National Park

The best safaris in Zimbabwe

Lodges, camps and hidden gems, hwange national park, mana pools national park, gonarezhou national park, matusadona national park, victoria falls.

Elephant spotting in Hwange National Park

Elephant spotting in Hwange National Park

Hwange (pronounced wang-ee) is a fabulous park, and is one of my favourites anywhere in Africa.

At the eastern edge of the six-country Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area which is known for having the highest concentration of elephants in Africa, Hwange is very much a part of that heritage: elephants are everywhere.

It’s also known for its lions – it was just outside Hwange that Cecil the Lion was shot by a hunter in 2015, resulting in a firestorm of international publicity. And late in the dry season, especially around October when water is scarce, these two giants – lions and elephants – very often do battle. It’s one of the greatest spectacles I’ve ever witnessed.

It's a vast park with so many different areas to explore; the park’s east is busiest but there are waterholes and sweeping savannah plains all across the park. Wildlife also includes leopard, cheetah and African wild dog, with plenty of plains game, too, such as giraffe, zebra, buffalo and wildebeest. Watch also for greater kudu, gemsbok (oryx), sable and roan antelope.

Walking safari in Mana Pools National Park

Walking safari in Mana Pools National Park

Many travellers fall in love with UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mana Pools National Park, in northern Zimbabwe. That may have something to do with the scenery – a series of pools on the Zambezi River floodplain, an escarpment backdrop, semi-arid plains sprinkled with baobabs. Or the wildlife – all of the major predators (including African wild dog) are present and commonly seen here, with a full suite of prey animals for them to choose from.

But in my experience, what makes Mana Pools especially thrilling is that here you feel like you’re a part of the food chain. That’s because Mana Pools is one of few major parks in Africa where you are free to go walking wherever you want around the park, including without a guide. Canoe explorations are also popular.

Scenic Gonarezhou National Park

Scenic Gonarezhou National Park

This is a true hidden gem, down south in Zimbabwe and sharing wildlife with parks just across the borders with Mozambique and South Africa. Gonarezhou sees far fewer visitors than it deserves, possibly because the park was once ravaged by conflict and poaching. Thankfully, those days are long gone. While you have to work a little harder to see animals here than in, say, Hwange or Mana Pools, they’re very much worth it when you do.

In addition to all three big cats and lots of elephants, highlights might include some fascinating antelope varieties – such as nyala, roan, sable and suni – and there are reported to be king cheetah roaming the plains.

But if you weren’t coming here on safari, you might well do so for the scenery alone. Stands of mahogany and acacias provide a special cast to the landscape, while the red cliffs above the Runde River may just be one of Zimbabwe’s most beautiful corners.

Canoe safaris in Matusadona National Park

Canoe safaris in Matusadona National Park

I’ve never quite understood why Matusadona isn’t world-famous. For one thing, it rises beautifully from the shore of Lake Kariba in the country’s north. Because of its proximity to the water, numerous water-borne activities – canoe and boat trips among them – nicely complement the guided game or wildlife drives.

You can even go on walking safaris here, including one where you track black rhino with the experts. And Matusadona has nothing to envy other Zimbabwean parks when it comes to wildlife – there’s a good chance that you’ll see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and other charismatic megafauna while you’re here.

If Matusadona has a drawback, it also lies in its proximity to Lake Kariba. The lake is one of Zimbabwe’s most popular resort areas. While that does not directly affect the park itself, you need to venture some distance inside the park (and even away from the lake) to feel like you’ve left the circus behind.

Dodging tourists at Victoria Falls

Dodging tourists at Victoria Falls

It may be a cliché, but there’s a very good reason why Victoria Falls is one of the most popular places to visit in Africa. Spanning the Zimbabwean and Zambian borders, Mosi-oa-Tunya (‘The Smoke that Thunders’) is indeed a miraculous sight.

By all means dive into the activities on offer here, from kayaking to bungee-jumping. But stay too long and I find the hype that surrounds the experience, especially in the Zimbabwean gateway town of Livingstone, quickly starts to overwhelm.

Once you’ve seen the Falls from every possible angle, I’d suggest you leave the crowds and head for Zambezi National Park. Much of the park is river frontage: stay in a lodge overlooking the mighty Zambezi River. You might see lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and hippo while you’re here. And if you can’t face returning to Victoria Falls, in Zambezi National Park you’re within an hour of the Botswana border and world-class Chobe National Park.

Great Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe

Welcome to one of Africa’s most celebrated archaeological sites, and the best-preserved medieval ruins south of the Sahara, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Zimbabwe. The site dates back to the 13th to 15th centuries and is a fascinating add-on to any safari visit. Combine it with a visit to Gonarezhou National Park and Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands.

Close to Ngamo Plains, one of the most wildlife-dense areas of Hwange National Park, this uber-luxurious camp faces out onto the surrounding savannah; I’ve seen lions walking along (and sleeping under) the camp’s boardwalks. Elephants often pass by really close, and it’s a good area for African wild dogs. It’s a wonderful place to immerse yourself in Hwange’s special surroundings.

Camping at Main Camp

Camping at Main Camp

The bungalows here are fine, but the campsites have shade and acceptable ablutions blocks. But the real treat of camping here alongside the park headquarters are the honey badgers that roam around the camping area after dark. Ask at the park office about reserving one of the mobile campsites out in the remote wilds of the park.

Nantwich Lodge

Nantwich Lodge

Bestselling thriller writer Tony Park owns this lodge out in the park’s west. It’s an excellent place to stay, the safari trails in this part of the park only see a fraction of those elsewhere but with much the same wildlife, and if Tony’s in residence, he’s a fine host and raconteur. He’s also a good friend – ask him about the first time he met and threatened to report me to the park’s authorities…

Ruckomechi Camp

Ruckomechi Camp

On a remote private concession and right by the Zambezi River, Ruckomechi gives you the best of all possible worlds. Expect luxury safari tents, impeccable service, fine dining food and wildlife sightings even before you leave the camp.

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge

On stilts high above the Savé River, this superb safari lodge takes full advantage of the park’s scenic landscapes. I could sit on the terrace of my own private terrace for days and not grow tired of the view.

Rhino Safari Camp

Rhino Safari Camp

Everything you could want in a tented camp while on safari, Rhino Safari Camp removes you from the Lake Kariba crowds. Staying here does what every safari lodge or tented camp should aspire to: you feel like you’re a part of the park’s wild environment while doing so in supreme comfort – if you’re lucky, you’ll hear lions roaring at night from the safety of your own bed.

Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservancy

Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservancy

Not far from Harare, this impressive 10,000-hectare private conservancy is devoted to rhino and elephant conservation. A visit here, or even a spell volunteering, can really deepen your understanding of the conservation challenges Zimbabwe faces, thereby adding considerable depth to your safari.

Savé Valley Conservancy

Savé Valley Conservancy

Savé Valley Conservancy is one of the best-run private conservancies in Southern Africa. It’s a great place to visit, the wildlife is exceptional and you can do all the things – walking safaris, night drives, off-road excursions – that aren’t allowed in national parks. Although you won’t see it, part of the conservancy is also a hunting concession – Savé Valley is one of few places in Africa where this complicated conservation mix works. Whatever your view, ask them any questions you want, and visit with an open mind.

Zimbabwe safaris: Need to know

Everything you wish you'd known before you booked, the best times for safari in zimbabwe.

As is the case throughout much of southern Africa, the best time to go on safari in Zimbabwe is during the dry season months from April to October.

Not only are these the best months when it comes to weather conditions (clear skies, mild temperatures), but it’s also when wildlife-viewing is at its best; during the dry season, animals congregate around the last remaining water sources, making them easier to find and see. There are downsides to visiting at this time: this is high season, which means higher prices and you’ll share safari trails with many more travellers and their vehicles.

If you visit during the November-to-March wet season, bring your binoculars: this is when migratory bird species from Europe and North Africa arrive in Zimbabwe to escape northern winters. The volume of water from the Zambezi River that cascades over Victoria Falls also increases exponentially at this time, although it’s not necessarily the best time to see the Falls: especially late in the wet season, the amount of water is so great that the Falls themselves may be obscured by clouds of spray.

Things have improved dramatically on this front in recent years, but it’s not that long ago that self-drive safari-goers in Zimbabwe were stopped at checkpoints every few kilometres and asked for money. If this happens, politely decline, but carry an open pack of cigarettes, a can or two of South African beer, or small denomination US dollars and you should soon be on your way.

How a safari in Zimbabwe works

Zimbabwe is popular both as a self-drive and as a guided tour destination.

If you’re self-driving, cars can usually be picked up in Harare or Victoria Falls, although some travellers choose to pick up their vehicle across the border in Kasane, in Botswana. From Kasane, it’s an easy and short cross-border drive to either Victoria Falls or Hwange National Park. You can book lodges or camps directly, and booking campsites in national parks is usually done through the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (www.zimparks.org.zw).

If you’re on a guided safari tour, which can be either a private or a group safari, you’ll most likely fly into Victoria Falls, from where you’ll later be transferred from one park to the next by road or by small plane flying into one of the parks’ airstrips.

I had a wonderful time in Hwange! My tour guide Bothwell was fantastic and so kind. My accommodations at Gwango exceeded my expectations and my organizer Bronah was always available for any question I had. Finally, my driver Shakes was an expert navigator of the roads, in addition to being one the smartest people I’ve met. I was well looked after by Little Roz Tours and felt it was a great value. Victoria Falls Hwange And Chobe

Fantastic! Afro Honeyguide Adventures headed by Fungay and aided by Innocent had a perfect itinerary setup to see Hwange and Chobe National Parks along with Victoria Falls. All the guides were very informative, personable and accommodating. The lodging at all places was unique and enjoyable, especially the B&B in Kasane which I absolutely loved. My tour in the off-season was an awesome, unforgettable bucket list experience.

Vic Falls Short Break Tour

Vic Falls Short Break

Actually this program interpid gave only accomodation with breakfast at the hotel airport transfer and half day tour at US$1100+. for 2 persons. At this cost if we book the same hotel through Expidia will not cost more than US$300 for 2 persons If all included expenses as they charged should not be more than US$700 for 2 persons. The most of all we had extended to stay one more night and told the guide on the 1st day for our extension and asked for hotel to airport pick up . He said no problem just told the Horizon office ( local tour agent) at the hotel. We did told the Horizon , he said no problem just remind his colleague the day before we would go to the airport. But when we told again on the day before we would leave to the airport they said we have to pay for hotel to airport pickup at US$34 that was not the same as the guide and 1st Horizon employee told us (which we known after that they have bus run regularly) and keep the receipt for claim to Interpid after we back to our home. We decided to let the hotel call taxi for US$30 so we feel to be over charged too much for the poor service. VICctoria Falls us great! We just met the poor services..

African Photo Safaris for the Adventurous Traveler

An African photo safari is a large investment. Piper Mackay thoroughly understands this because she has been roaming Africa’s wilds, photographing remote tribes and wildlife for nearly two decades. From all her years of logistical experience with boots on the ground and a large network of partners, each itinerary is handcrafted with unparalleled photographic opportunities and immeasurable experiences.

TESTIMONIALS

Piper Mackay truly deserves recognition as an outstanding photo safari leader. She is dedicated to doing an outstanding job and I have never seen anyone work as hard as she does to ensure you have a memorable photo safari experience. Would I travel with her again? Absolutely. Would I recommend you go on one of her trips. Yes – without reservation. It is quite obvious she loves what she does and she cares very deeply that you have a memorable experience on her trips. – GREAT MIGRATION SAFARI

If you travel with Piper on one of her photo tours, there will never be a dull moment.  Piper is truly passionate about Africa, about her work, and about ensuring that her clients have a memorable experience.  I am not long back from a trip with Piper to the spectacular Gerewol festival in Chad. As always, Piper had arranged a truly unforgettable trip.  From witnessing the arrival of the nomadic Wodaabe tribe members, to watching the men dance and listening to their hypnotic chant, I will treasure my photographic memories for many years to come – GEREWOL FESTIVAL

The Signature African Safari was my first wildlife photo tour. Piper did not disappoint. As the tour proceeded, she kept exceeding my expectations. Her drivers are excellent. Most importantly, they are also accomplished photographers and they know where to position the vehicles for the best light and the best photographs. Also, early in the tour, I requested a review of my images with Piper and she happily obliged. Her inputs were very helpful and my photos showed a marked improvement as the tour progressed. – SIGNATURE SAFARI AFRICA

Our First-Hand Experience

On our very first visit to Victoria Falls, the Family Expeditions team was immediately smitten with the culture and the adventure.  Tiger fishing on the Zambezi River was a highlight of time there along with elephant back riding and of course visiting the falls.  On subsequent travels to Zimbabwe, we have fallen even more in love.

One memory that we often revisit is when we took a day trip to Chobe National Park.  Often a part of our itineraries out of Victoria Falls.  We were riding in a small boat with only our group of 6 along the Chobe River.  As we rounded a bend in the river, we spotted baby elephants crossing the channel venturing to the lush green island.  They played and jumped on each others backs for quite a while in the river.  To this day, dozens of safaris later, that image still sticks in our memories.

A Zimbabwe luxury photo safari should be on everyone’s lifetime bucket list of travels. Every Zimbabwe luxury photo safari itinerary that Family Expeditions plans is tailor made for your interests.

Zimbabwe is bordered in the north and the south by two major rivers.  The northern boundary by the mighty Zambezi River and to the north, the Limpopo River.  Since the strong river systems are so vibrant with that comes spectacular scenery and abundant game.  One of the the natural wonders of the world lies in Zimbabwe…Victoria Falls!  Worthy of an addition to any safari whether in Zimbabwe or other countries.

  • Guy had found an 8-foot-long crocodile under his bed in 2013

Former Zimbabwe cricketer Guy Whittall underwent emergency surgery after being attacked by a wounded leopard while on a hunting session earlier in the week. The incident occurred in Humani, Zimbabwe's Southeast Lowveld and while Whittall was on his family game reserve, a place where he had previously encountered wild animals.

The attack happened early in the week and resulted in serious injuries for Guy Whittall, who was promptly airlifted to Harare for emergency medical treatment. His wife, Hannah Stooks-Whittall, took to Facebook to share the harrowing news with friends, family, and fans. In her post, she detailed the severity of the situation, revealing that Whittall had lost a significant amount of blood and required urgent care.

Hannah's message on social media was both a notification and a heartfelt expression of gratitude towards the medical staff at Hippo Clinic, who stabilised her husband before he could be transferred to Milton Park Hospital for further treatment. She described the overwhelming support they received: "Guy and I are overwhelmed by the hundreds of messages of well-wishers after Guy's run-in with a wounded leopard earlier today," she wrote. "We are very fortunate that he was stabilized at Hippo Clinic by wonderful staff."

A Photographer’s Guide to a Mana Pools Safari

For photographers seeking breathtaking landscapes and awe-inspiring wildlife encounters, Mana Pools National Park stands as an unforgettable destination, due to the high concentration of wildlife present. Nestled in the heart of Zimbabwe along the mighty Zambezi River, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a diverse range of subjects for photographers.

When thinking of Mana, your mind inevitably flashes to iconic shots of big bull elephants reaching for the treetops, pulling down Kigelia fruits or branches of the abundant acacia albidas in front of the blue haze of the Zambezi. However, Mana National Park in Southern Africa offers much more than just those iconic shots. In this blog, and in the video below we’ll share everything you need to know about a Mana Pools photo safari .

While on a photographic safari here, you will have incredible encounters with wildlife, discover creative opportunities for capturing images at every turn, and fall in love with the landscape that surpasses your imagination.

Photographic opportunities include photographing wildlife across the incredible floodplains, getting down low with African Wild Dogs , framing beautiful eland between the trees, and not to mention, photographing lions against the backdrop of iconic forests. As mentioned earlier, the park is known for its elephant population of over 12,000.

Therefore, while on safari in Mana Pools , you may be able to get some incredible photographs of them walking through the forest, either reaching for branches or in the floodplains of the Zambezi.

Everything you need to know about Mana Pools

The true gem of Mana Pools lies in its unique offering that sets it apart from other wildlife destinations – the ability to explore the park on foot. This exceptional feature is a massive bonus for photography enthusiasts, as it allows you to intimately connect with nature and capture breathtaking moments up close.

The sheer magic of being able to walk amidst the park’s stunning landscapes and encounter wildlife in their natural habitat creates an unparalleled experience for photographers, making this park a haven of photographic wonder.

How to get to Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools can be accessed through various airports and airstrips, depending on your starting point. The closest major international airports are Harare International Airport, located approximately 370 kilometres away from the park, and Victoria Falls Airport, located approximately 350 kilometres away.

Chartered flights are the most popular and recommended. From there, visitors can either choose to fly to Mana Pools airstrip, which is the nearest airstrip to the park, or opt for a road journey.

The road conditions leading to Mana Pools National Park can vary depending on the route taken. The most common route is via Harare and then proceeding towards Karoi. The road is generally paved and well-maintained up until Karoi. From Karoi onwards, the road becomes a gravel road that may require extra caution and slower speeds, especially during the rainy season. It is advisable to have a suitable vehicle for off-road conditions if travelling by road.

For those who prefer flying, charter flights are available from Harare to Mana airstrip, offering a scenic and convenient option. The airstrip is situated within the park, providing easy access to the lodges and campsites.

Mana Pools Landscape and Topography

Mana Pools National Park is located in northern Zimbabwe, along the southern banks of the Zambezi River. It is renowned for its spectacular and diverse ecosystems, making it a popular destination for wildlife and nature photographers.

The park has a diverse range of terrain, including floodplains, woodlands, and mopane forests. One of its most iconic features is the riverine landscape. The Zambezi River flows through the park, creating a unique environment where animals and plants coexist in close proximity to the water source. Scenic riverbanks offer stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

The varied topography of the park includes both flat plains and rugged hills. The park is dominated by the Mana Pools area, which is a flat stretch of vegetation-rich floodplain. This area is known for its towering mahogany and acacia trees, which provide shade and sustenance for a wide range of wildlife species such as elephants, lions, and leopards.

The park experiences a subtropical climate with distinct dry and wet seasons. During the dry season, temperatures can soar, and the vegetation gradually dries up. However, the wet season brings relief in the form of refreshing rains, turning the park into a lush green paradise.

Mana Pools National Park is home to a rich and diverse array of flora and fauna. The riverine ecosystem supports a plethora of animal life, including large elephant herds, hippos, crocodiles, and an abundance of bird species.

The Zambezi River, with its numerous tributaries, acts as a lifeline for both wildlife and vegetation within the park. It serves as a watering hole for animals and provides a habitat for diverse aquatic life. Moreover, the river’s floodplains and deltas create dynamic ecosystems that support a rich variety of aquatic and terrestrial species.

Mana Pools National Park has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is protected as a national park. The conservation efforts in the area have been recognized globally, and sustainable practices are employed to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity. Besides the national park status, there are also private concessions within the park, allowing for responsible tourism and resource management.

The local communities living around the park, such as the Tonga, Shona, and Nyanga tribes, provide a unique cultural blend and have a rich cultural heritage and contribute to the rich atmosphere of the area.

The national park covers about 2,196 square kilometres, providing a vast and varied landscape. It encompasses the floodplain of the Zambezi River, woodlands, grasslands, and the four main pools after which it is named. The sheer size of the park allows for a diverse range of wildlife and natural ecosystems to thrive.

Overall, the vastness, ecological importance, and unique wildlife experiences sets Mana Pools apart, making it a coveted destination for wildlife photography enthusiasts looking for an authentic African experience.

What animals will I see in Mana Pools?

Mana is famous for its large population of elephants, known for their impressive tusks and incredible size. Resident superstar, Boswell, is an elephant bull known for his antics of standing on his hind legs while plucking the most succulent pods from the trees. His circus elephant-like behaviour turned him into a YouTube star. But he’s not the only elephant that does this – guides talk of atleast five different males who have since adopted this behaviour.

Other mammals include the Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, lions, African leopard, African wild dog, spotted hyena, zebra, and impala. When moving towards the water, photographers can get sightings of aquatic monsters such as hippopotamuss and the Nile crocodile.

Mana Pools National Park is known for its incredible population of eland. As they prefer open woodlands and savannas, the park’s habitat provides an ideal environment for them. Waterbuck is another species that thrive in the park.

Photographers will not find any wildebeest, rhino, or giraffe in the park. By the mid-90s the last of the black rhino were removed from the park, as poachers reduced their numbers significantly. Wildebeest and giraffes were simply not introduced into the ecosystem.

Discovering the bird species of Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools is a great birding destination. The range of habitats includes woodland, escarpment cliffs and savannah. Waterbirds are well represented along the shore of the Zambezi River and the four pools. Southern carmine bee-eaters nest on the riverbanks in the dry months. African skimmer, Pel’s fishing owl, The purple-crested turaco, and Lilian’s lovebird are just some of the birding treats that you may encounter during your trip.

The magnificent African Fish Eagle is a resident bird known for its distinctive call and powerful flying skills. It is often seen near water bodies, preying on fish. More resident birds include the Grey-headed kingfisher and the Lilac-breasted roller.

Migratory birds include the Southern carmine bee-eater, African skimmer, and Livingstone’s flycatcher and are present from November to April.

Böhm’s spine tail is an endemic bird to the Zambezi Valley, including Mana Pools. It has a distinctive call and can be found in woodland areas, feeding on insects.

What lenses should I pack for a Zimbabwe safari?

When packing your camera gear, it is important to keep in mind the 20kg luggage restriction that comes with flying on a chartered flight. Therefore, you must pack strategically.

It is recommended to have lenses ranging from 24mm to 500/600mm for optimal versatility. Since you will be doing a lot of walking, a longer lens is beneficial for zooming in and capturing distant wildlife. Pro tip: make sure to pack your camera straps so that you can easily sling one of your cameras around your neck while walking.

The reason the region attracts so many wildlife photographers is because of walking safaris

You will also have the opportunity to get up close to subjects like large elephants, so having a wide-angle lens is essential. The stunning environment calls for lenses such as 70-200 or 100-400/100-500, as they provide the most aesthetically pleasing results. Additionally, using a GoPro or action camera can help capture the expansive shots and the thrilling experiences of walking, canoeing, and driving through the remarkable flood plains.

Activities to enjoy on a Mana Pools safari

There are several activities that visitors can enjoy in and around Mana Pools National Park. Some of these activities include game drives which gives photographers the opportunity to see elephants, lions, buffalo, leopards, and a variety of antelope species.

Mana Pools is well-known for its canoeing experiences along the Zambezi River. It allows visitors to observe wildlife from the water, including hippos and crocodiles. Photographers have an extra advantage shooting wildlife frolicking in the water, or peacefully drinking alongside various species.

Guided walking safaris give visitors the chance to explore the park on foot, enjoying a more intimate experience with nature while learning about the diverse plant and animal life. It’s important to note that these activities in Mana are usually guided by park rangers and experienced local guides, ensuring safety and environmental sustainability.

The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 400 bird species to be spotted. Photographers can spot various colourful and unique birds, including fish eagles, kingfishers, storks, and herons.

Where to stay when visiting Mana

The park offers a range of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. Visitors can choose from lodges, high-end tented camps, and camping facilities. The lodges provide comfortable and well-appointed rooms with amenities such as en-suite bathrooms, electricity, and dining areas, while tented camps offer a more adventurous experience with spacious tents equipped with beds, basic furnishings, and shared bathroom facilities.

For those who prefer a more rustic experience, there are camping sites available where visitors can pitch their own tents and enjoy the natural surroundings.

The lodges are strategically spread out across the park, each offering its unique scenery and ambiance. This allows visitors to choose a lodge that best suits their preferences and desired experience. From lodges nestled by the riverbanks to those situated amidst the lush greenery, there is a diverse range of landscapes to explore.

It is worth noting that some lodges may close during the rainy months. This is because the park’s terrain can become challenging to navigate and access during this time. However, there are still plenty of other lodges available that remain open year-round, ensuring that visitors can experience the park’s beauty and wildlife in all seasons.

Mana Pools, in conclusion

In conclusion, photographers should visit Mana Pools National Park due to its exceptional beauty and unique photography opportunities. The park’s diverse ecosystem offers an abundance of wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, making it a haven for any photographer looking to capture the wonders of nature.
