Absolut Home 2019

Absolut Home is the visitor centre of the Swedish vodka producer Absolut Vodka, which opened in 2018. It is located in the historical mansion of the factory owner at the gates of the over 100-year-old vodka distillery in the small Skånian town of Åhus.

Absolut Home tells the success story of the premium vodka that began in 1879 with the company's founder Lars Olsson Smith, also known as the "Brandy King", made Absolut Vodka the third largest spirits brand in the world today.

The visitor centre conveys the production philosophy of Absolut Vodka, which relies exclusively on regionally produced wheat and water from its own deep wells. It explains the individual production steps from the cultivation of the special winter wheat to distillation and post-processing to the bottling of the vodka in the unmistakable glass bottles reminiscent of an old apothecary bottle.

During a guided tour, visitors can also experience the production first-hand, where more than one hundred million litres of vodka are produced annually. In addition, the visitor centre presents the product range including tastings, shows examples of the company's involvement in the art world and offers crash courses in mixing cocktails. Following the visit, visitors can enjoy selected cocktails and regional delicacies in the in-house bar and restaurant.

  • DPinSvezia 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Too little food for the money The service was super friendly, the place is flashy like you would expect a lounge bar in New York. A little bit too much for my taste. We were here on a dinner, and picked from the “à la carte” menu. I can’t complain about the quality of the food, but you get really very little for the money. They tell you in advance that the ”mellanrätter” will require at least 2 portions per person, which was fine, but we ended up having to get more. The real joke, however, was the dessert: for 120kr we got a really minuscule “guldnugat”, which didn’t event taste like anything special. This place is maybe nice for events, for drinks after middag, or the “experience” thing, but I really wouldn’t recommend it for a standard evening with the standard menu, as in the town there are restaurants that reasonably offer quality and quantity (and they are already not exactly cheap). The fact that the place was completely empty makes me think that the locals think the same (while I can imagine that things can be different during the summer, when all the “stockholmers” come down). Absolut Home awarded Europe’s leading vodka distillery tour

Absolut Home awarded Europe’s Leading Vodka Distillery Tour at the World Travel Awards – an acknowledgement of efforts made to embody the rich history of the Absolut Vodka brand.

absolut ahus tour

Åhus, 3 October 2022: Since opening its doors in 2018, the purpose of Absolut Home has been to portray Absolut in an innovative, interactive, and informative way by reflecting the creativity, playfulness, and progressiveness of the brand. On October 1, Absolut Home claimed the top spot for Europe’s best distillery tour in the vodka category, a confirmation that the experience makes an impression with guests.

The guided tour at Absolut Home takes guests on a journey through the history of the brand, engaging all senses. In addition to what you hear, see, and feel, food and drinks complete the experience.

Kenneth Hoffström, Site Manager Absolut Home states: “This is a true recognition of the unique tour we have created for our guests, that hopefully reflects the appreciation of both past and future visitors from across the world. This award gives us even more energy and motivation to further improve and evolve our distillery tour and help grow tourism in Sweden, our region and in Åhus,”

Although the Absolut brand is known by many, few know that the production of Absolut Vodka takes place in the small village of Åhus in Skåne County Sweden, next door to where Absolut Home is located. From seed to sip, every aspect of the production process takes place in and around the small town – ensuring the same quality and taste wherever enjoyed in the world.

“Absolut’s production process aligns well with the rest of the brand – large-scale with attention to detail and quality. The vision for Absolut Home has been greatly inspired by that same ambition, cast in the same mould,” Kenneth Hoffström concludes.

Absolut Home expects to receive around 25,000 visitors by the end of the year and will continue its development to accommodate the best experience possible for their guests. Absolut Home offers guided tours, a bar and restaurant with a large garden, and is open all year round.

Åhus and an absolutely perfect Cosmopolitan…

May 10, 2019 By Ron 62 Comments

Some say perfection is but a dream and perhaps they’re right, but then they’ve never experienced an absolutely perfect Cosmopolitan made in Åhus, the home of an absolutely perfect vodka…

A Cosmopolitan cocktail as made at Absolute Home.

Eva and I recently had the grand opportunity to spend a wonderful winter weekend in the lovely coastal town of Åhus on the Eastern Swedish coast.   In today’s post, we’ll be enjoying this quaint town and take you on a tour of a Swedish vodka distillery.  So read on, we’ll even share a little vodka history and show you how to make that perfect Cosmopolitan.

I bet you’re wondering, “where in the world is Åhus and what’s that little  ° over the A?”.

Well, Åhus is a Swedish town lying on the shores of the Baltic (well almost).  It’s about 560 km (348 miles) from Stockholm, 275 km (171 miles) from Gothenburg, 145 km (90 miles) from Copenhagen and a mere 74 km (46 miles) from our humble abode.

Swedish Å.

Giggity miggity [Public domain]

Now, about that little ° over the A or Å, it’s the 27th letter in the Swedish alphabet (there’s 29) and it’s pronounced like a long O with a bit of an “r” at the end (Ooor).  So, in English, we’d pronounce Åhus something like Ooorwhoss or something like that.  Heck, you can call it Ahouse if you wish.  Phew, too much language lesson for me today.  But, should you be curious about how the Swedish alphabet sounds you can go HERE,  but don’t forget to come back.

Images taken around Åhus, Sweden.

OK, I digressed, back to the subject.  No matter how you pronounce Åhus, I’m sure if you have or should ever visit you’ll simply call it absolutely lovely.

Main admin building of Absolut Vodka in Åhus.

Besides being a very popular coastal summer destination, Åhus is the home to ABSOLUT Vodka!  Yep, that’s me next to that big ceramic tile ABSOLUT bottle.  All bundled up on a cold and windy March day.

FYI Readers, we’re trying out a new “drop-down” feature to streamline reading for those of you wishing to have a speeder read.  To expand the section for reading just click-in where it tells you to (like below).

ABSOLUT vodka’s history begins with Mr. L.O. Smith, who was quite an interesting bloke.  He began in business at the age of ten and was thought of as an entrepreneur by the age of 14.  L.O. was known to be a promoter and salesman extraordinaire.  In the late 1800s, brännvin (vodka of the day) was known to be foul tasting and could make one very ill or indeed kill you.  L.O. saw the need for a purer process that would make vodka safer and have the same clean taste each time it was put to the palate.  So, in 1879 L.O. Smith began production of “Absolut Rent Brännvin” (Absolute Pure Vodka).  He did this by commercializing a revolutionary new distillation method. The method was called rectification, a process that ABSOLUT still uses today.  The continuous distillation (rectification) process allowed L.O. Smith to produce Absolut Rent brännvin (“absolutely pure brännvin”) with great success and indeed earned him the title of “Vodka King”.  Absolut Rent brännvin was originally distilled in the Stockholm area but production moved south in Sweden, as years past finally settling in Åhus.  So, what of L.O. Smith?  Through the years, he made a lot of money and lost a lot of money.  He became a member of the Swedish Parliament where he spent, what some say, were his happiest years.  Through those years he continued to be known as the “Vodka King”.  Then, on December 9th, 1913 he left this world penniless.  Then around 1917 the Swedish government established the V & S Vin & Spirit AB  as a part of government alcohol monopoly. V & S Vin & Spirit AB began distilling L.O. Smith’s “Absolut Rent brännvin” but renamed it “Absolute Pure Vodka”.  L.O. Smith’s dream was carried on by the capable folks at V & S Vin & Spirit until 2008 (more on this below).  Time passed, vodka was drunk, and it was time for a change. In 1997, the 100th anniversary of “Absolute Pure Vodka”, there came a change.  Under the helm of then President Lars Lindmark, “Absolute Pure Vodka” which had been brewed in Åhus for years was reintroduced to the world as ABSOLUT .  From that decision and with some very clever advertising Absolut became the company they are today.   Another interesting chapter in ABSOLUT’s history is the sale of   V & S Vin & Spirit AB (makers of ABSOLUT ) to Pernod Ricard , Paris in 2008.  Pernod acquired V & S from the Swedish government for a sum of €5.63 billion.  The funds from the sale were redistributed to various government entities within Sweden.  FYI, this sum paid by Pernod exceeded the price Ford paid for Volvo AB in 1999 (based on 2008 exchange). There’s so much more history and should you be interested you can read a very good article about ABSOLUT   HERE .

Absolut bar and Restaurang Villan.

The kind folks at ABSOLUT HOME had made us a reservation for lunch at their Restaurang Villan , which is just downstairs from the gift shop and tour check-in.  It’s a bright and brilliant bar/restaurant, with the bar having every flavor of ABSOLUT and then some.  The restaurant is smallish but great fun.  The chef prepared for Eva a butter poached cod fillet with roasted beets and I had melt-in-your-mouth pork belly with very crisp skin along with some lovely braised red cabbage.   And, of course, boiled dilled potatoes and cream sauce.  I’m sure Restaurang Villan will soon become a favorite of the locals and travelers to Åhus.

***OK readers here’s another drop down.  If you wish to read about the tour click below!***

The absolut tour….

A bottle of Absolut and passes to Absolut Home.

After lunch and a quick stroll through Åhus, we returned for our scheduled tour.  We had booked the afternoon (3:00 PM) English tour which begins in the gift shop.  There we were meet by our very enthusiastic guide as well as an American family from New England that joined us on the tour.  We were nine total including our guide.  Ground rules were laid as to where we were and were not allowed to take images.  We were not allowed to take images inside the bottling facility,  so that’s why there are not many images from there.

Replica of LO Smith's office.

Stepping into the house you arrive into a replica of L. O. Smith’s office which is where the 90-minute tour began.  It was like taking a step back in time.

Fillip our excellent guide.

Our enthusiastic guide Filip began by giving us the early history of L.O. Smith the King of Vodka.

Fillip giving a tour of Absolut Home.

The visual effects for explaining the history of ABSOLUT were most impressive.  It was very fascinating and entertaining.  The images were projected on the office wall as Filip presented the history of L.O. Smith and his original vodka, Absolut Rent Brännvin.

Surround video theater at Absolut Home.

Now, as impressed as I was with the visual effects in the office, the video and sound in the theater were amazing, as you can see in images of the surround video.

Surround video at Absolut Home.

The short video presented a very informative look at the ABSOLUT  Company today.  The video emphasized ABSOLUT ‘s commitment to the environment (they’re process is CO 2   neutral), recycling and local one-sourcing.  But, what really came out in the presentation was ABSOLUT ‘s commitment to the Åhus community and their 300 local employees. Did you know that 99% of all of the  ABSOLUT  vodka produced is exported out of Sweden?

The Absolut distillery.

Let’s take a quick break from the tour so we can show you where the actual distillation and production of ABSOLUT Vodka takes place.  The ultra-modern and highly automated distillery is located 11 km from Åhus near a village called Nöbbelöv.   Here, working 24-7, they produce 600,000 liters of vodka per day.  For the process, they mill a bunch of wheat and mix it with a very special yeast, add water and wait.  Then it’s distilled 100s of times and mixed with purified water.   The ABSOLUT is then pumped into one of the ten distillation/aging towers that each holds 600,000 liters.  OK, this is an oversimplification so forgive me ABSOLUT Master Distiller.   Did you know that it takes one kilo of wheat to make one bottle of Absolut?

You might have noticed that the continuous distillation process is glass enclosed.  It’s said that this is to protect any birds from being harmed by the process.  I think that perhaps they got tired of cleaning the bird nests and poop from the distilling columns.  Did you know that they go through 10-12 large truckloads of wheat per day?  Let’s jump back to the tour now.

absolut ahus tour

Back on the tour, Filip explained how vital wheat is to the purity and taste of ABSOLUT .  Old L.O. Smith discovered long ago that the best vodka is made from winter wheat .  Winter wheat is higher in starch and produces a bit of a peppery taste with just a hint of sweetness.  All of the winter wheat used to make ABSOLUT is grown in the Skåne region of Sweden, which is where we live.   Did you know that only the starch is needed from the wheat to produce alcohol?  The leftover protein and fiber (silage) are fed to 200,000 happy pigs and 50,000 happy cows every day.

The Absolut distillation process.

We moved next into a special room with work stations equipped with miniature distillation plants.  Here Filip went into great detail about how the distillation process works.  We smelled the grain and the distilled pure grain alcohol (about 95%) which is as it smells prior to mixing with water.   Mixing, yes indeed.  The pure grain alcohol is mixed with highly purified (reverse osmosis) water which comes from a very deep well lying below Åhus.  Thus, about 60% of a bottle of ABSOLUT is water, making the vodka 80 proof or 40% alcohol.  We also tasted the near 95% real deal grain alcohol and all I can say is I’m glad they mix it.

Walking to the Absolut Bottling facility.

From here it’s back to the check-in point to don our bright fluorescent safety vests and head for the bottling plant.  Yep, that’s Eva up there trying to say warm on this cold and windy day.  The bottling plant is just across from ABSOLUTE HOME.

The Absolut wall of bottles.

Now, this is the area where only limited images are allowed.  So, all I was able to get was a couple of shots from the Wall of Bottles.  The Wall of Bottles is a permanent display of all the different bottle designs of ABSOLUT .  Lighting made it near impossible to get a decent image.  Above are just a few of the bottles on display.   Speaking of bottles, did you know that the current and very successful  ABSOLUT bottle was inspired by an antique medicine bottle seen in Stockholm in the late 1970s?   In the bottom two images (above), you can see ABSOLUT ‘s relatively new “top-drawer”  Absolut Elyx .  Absolut Elyx  is a single estate, copper crafted, luxury vodka.  Now, as of this post, I’ve not tasted Elyx as it’s bloody expensive.  It’s about US$60/700ml bottle.  I’m sure it’s good, but if I’m going to spend that kind of coin, I’d just as soon have  Rémy Martin VSOP  which is priced at the same level.

A bottle of ABSOLUT.

The perfect Cosmopolitan…

The perfect Cosmopolitan...

We started the class with a brief history of the origin of the Cosmopolitan.  There’s more than one story out there as to the origin of the Cosmopolitan, but this is the one ABSOLUT buys into.   It was after closing in 1987 at the Odeon in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood when the bartender, one Toby Cecchini shook-up the drink.  It was said to be the end of a long hard shift and the waitstaff needed a treat.  Thus the Cosmopolitan was born.  Fast forward to 1999 and episode 19 of Sex in the City   where Samantha orders a Cosmopolitan and the rest, as they say, is history.

So put on some Phil Collins or Tracy Chapman and breakout those  Sex in the City DVDs, cause we’re going to shake a Cosmopolitan.

The Absolut Home mixologist station.

On the tour, as you enter the mixologist room you’re greeted by a classroom setting with mixing stations for a dozen or more.  My kind of classroom indeed.  Wait, did you miss the tour, no worries just go back up and click on “Click here to go on the ABSOLUT tour”.

Cocktail mixing station at Absolut Home.

Each station contained all the ingredients one needs for mixing a Cosmopolitan.  You’ll need a Martini glass (read below), ice cubes, a cocktail shaker and strainer, ABSOLUT vodka (or Citron), triple sec (I like to use Cointreau), fresh lime juice, cranberry juice and an orange peel twist for finishing.  (Full recipe follows).

Chilling the martini glass.

Filip got us cracking by explaining the importance of using the proper glass.  For a proper Cosmopolitan, ABSOLUT ‘s head mixologist recommends a bowl-type Martini glass like the one above, although any martini glass will work.  Or, a mason jar if that’s your thing.  Chilling the glass prior to serving is a must.  So, just fill that Martini glass full of ice cubes and let it chill.  Once the Martini glass is chilling we’re ready to get cracking.  Pour the measured ingredients into the shaker and fill the shaker with ice or ice first and then ingredients, your call.  Place the top and cap on the shaker securely, lest you might waste some of your drink.

Shake shake shake, shake shake shake Shake your booty, shake your booty Oh, shake shake shake, shake shake shake Shake your booty, shake your booty

Aah, you can, you can do it very well you’re the best in the world i can tell, lyrics by: kc and the sunshine band .

Shake that shaker until your hands can’t stand the cold anymore (at least that’s how we were instructed).

Then you’re ready to dump the ice from your Martini glass and strain your drink into the chilled glass.

Finishing the a Cosmopolitan with a orange peel twist.

To finish or not to finish?  I say finish your Cosmopolitan with a twist.  Take an orange peel twist (pith removed) and twist it over the cocktail so the essential oil mists the top of the cocktail.

An Absolut perfect Cosmopolitan.

Then wipe the rim of your glass with the peel and place it as Eva did above.

Skål all!

So, Skål (Cheers) to you for making this retro classic cocktail or at least reading down this far.

Eva has tested and tasted this Cosmopolitan and gives it her 5-star rating…

Ron's Cert of reg for becoming a Master Shaker.

We ended our tour by receiving our (Eva earned one too) Cosmopolitan Master Shaker certificate.  Now, I’ll leave you this week with the following optional video (read below) for a taste of ABSOLUT humor.

Hello readers, please note that you should not view this video if humorous folks (and a pig) that are almost naked offend you.  If it doesn’t, I think you’ll enjoy the  ABSOLUT New Employee video.

Please note:  ABSOLUT would like to make all aware that this video relates to the promotion of alcohol and should not be viewed by anyone below the legal age of alcohol purchase in the country of viewing.

Wait, I bet you’re wondering where we stayed while in Åhus.  Perhaps you want to hear more about our weekend.

Åhus Gastgifvaregard.

Well, we stayed at an outstanding gästgifvaregard called Åhus Gästgifvaregård, which has been in operation since 1737, but they’ve updated it since then.  You say, “what the heck is a gästgifvaregård?”.  You’ll find out in our next post when we’ll show you the  Åhus Gästgifvaregård and make another classic Scandinavian dish.

You got that right Ronit. We love taking short weekend excursions. In fact, we have come to a point in life where we prefer short trips over a long week or two trips. Thanks for stopping by.

Well, this does take me back to the turn of the century! When we lived in Kittery, Maine, we designed our garden to have pathways that somehow ended up creating the outline of an Absolut bottle. We of course, called it “Absolut garden.“ we also devised our own version of the cosmopolitan using blue Curaçao instead of triple sec. Depending on the cranberry juice used, it turned the cocktail either purple or magenta. They were quite pretty! Ron, I loved all the history of the Absolut factory in this post. I had no idea it was from Åhus, or even from Sweden, for that matter. The moral of the story is, I should be more curious about from where my food and beverages come!

May 12, 2019 at 11:57 am

David, I’m impressed! An absolut bottle shaped garden and you did it unknowing. Perhaps old L.O. Smith was guiding you. When we were at the Absolut bar we actually tasted a “Blue Cosmo” is was the same recipe as I posted but as you mentioned blue Curaçao instead of triple sec and white cranberry instead of red. I think the color might be more striking with the red cranberry. I’ll have to give that a try. You know, I never paid much attention to where food and drink came from until some years ago when I visited a Chinese processed food plant that was canning veggies destined for Europe. Since then I always look, always at all. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

Ron, thank you ! Best laugh of the weekend !! Love if and some more knowledge about Sweden in hand . . . Absolutely no language problems . . . Estonia is as musical with its vowels as Swedish 🙂 ! That said vodka is not my tipple nor cocktails my choice . . . give me wine, cognac, single malt whisky and gin – and not in a short drink form . . . far too lethal; And loved the video . . . glorious fun as none of the people from my birth country have the least hesitation in dropping all for sauna or swimming or

May 12, 2019 at 12:05 pm

I’ve only listened to the Estonian language via TV and didn’t get a word. It’s a lovely flowing language and falls well on my ears. I’m more a Bourbon or G&T guy. Do enjoy a glass of wine and a small spot of cognac on those special occasions, however. But, when I do drink vodka it’s Absolut. I thought you’d like the video, good Scandinavian humor. Thanks for stopping by Eha and sharing your thoughts.

I loved the story about Absolut and every time I see a bottle I will think of your story and Åhus. Prost !

Thanks Gerlinde, I’m glad you enjoyed it and Skål to you…

May 11, 2019 at 7:07 am

When it comes to Vodka I only drink Absolut. Strangely though, I’ve never had a cosmopolitan. I shall have to remedy that soon.

May 12, 2019 at 12:08 pm

Hi Tandy, I suppose the Cosmopolitan rage had diminished in the years since it’s popularity, but I think it’s worthy of a try. Thanks for taking the time to have a read.

Wow I guess I had never thought of where Absolut vodka came from but Ahus is really cute. And thank you for the informative lesson Ron!

May 12, 2019 at 12:09 pm

Lorraine, you’re most welcome for the info. I think the thing that draws me to reading blogs the most is the joy of learning something new. Thanks for popping by.

Woo hoo! Great funny video, Ron! I’ve had my share of Absolut and Cosmopolitans too, even though I grew up in bourbon country and favor it. Love hearing his Swedish accent in the video, my MIL’s family all sounded about the same. Sounds like the gästgifvaregard was great! It reminds me of the gasthaus’ when we lived in Germany, good places to stay with taverns too. Sounds like you and Eva had a fun weekend! Congrats on your Cosmopolitan Master Shaker Certificate! 😉

May 12, 2019 at 11:46 am

Hi Pam, I’m glad you enjoyed the video, I thought it was a hoot. I’m with you when it comes to bourbon, being a Woodford Reserve man myself. I think you’ll see a similarity of sorts between the gästgifvaregard and the German gasthaus. We did indeed have a grand time and enjoyed the cocktail class.

May 12, 2019 at 12:28 am

Well what fun! And so informative! I loved hearing the alphabet, but kinda gave up at J. I always enjoy your posts, and really appreciate them. Now to watch the videos!

May 12, 2019 at 12:14 pm

Mimi, so glad you had fun reading the post. I’m impressed you stayed with the Swedish alphabet until “J”. I think I gave up at about “f” on my first try. The last three letters (å,ä&ö) are the tough ones. Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for stopping by.

May 12, 2019 at 9:39 am

Such rich information here, Ron. I’m not a big drinker — BUT, when I’m out and order a cocktail, it always includes vodka. And after reading this, I’m off Ketel One and on to Absolute! That’s one good looking Cosmopolitan, and I love the orange peel tip. Cheers! 🙂

May 12, 2019 at 12:18 pm

Hi Valentina, truth be known, I’m not a big cocktail drinker but do prefer Absolut. I tried both Ketel One and Grey Goose but prefer the clean taste of Absolut. Take care and thanks for taking the time to have a read.

God Gracious ! If this Cosmopolitan is half as good as horns in “I’m your boogie man” I am booking a first flight to the north ! Thank you Ron !

May 12, 2019 at 12:23 pm

Davorka, if you guys ever make it up this way, we’d be proud to shake up a Cosmopolitan for you whilst KC and the Sunshine band plays “ Shake your Booty ” You can see them singing it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSWwqqoYCD4 .

May 12, 2019 at 5:30 pm

Gosh I’m not sure whether I’d choose that butter poached cod filled or the pork belly, Ron. That’s a hard decision. I love them both and they looked equally delicious! Did you wash those meals down with some delicious Absolut? Fascinating tour too Ron. I presume in all your travels you will have visited a whisky distillery and seen that process? Anyway thanks for the education and excellent read!

May 13, 2019 at 3:12 pm

Neil, I recommend the pork belly. It’s not a dish one should eat often, but man is it good when you do. I visited with the chef when we were there and he filled me in on the recipe. I hope to perfect it on a small scale and post it soon. Nope, I washed it down with a local microbrewery larger that was quite good. I’ve made it to my share of distilleries, but never in Scotland. That’s on my travel bucket list. Thanks for taking the time to have a read.

I love your posts!!! I learn so much about places I don’t know and some I do. Åhus does look like a quaint little town and so different. You sure are having fun in your retirement; something everyone should do. 🙂 When I was a drinker, Absolut was my vodka of choice. What fun to get a virtual tour of the factory. Thanks!

May 13, 2019 at 3:16 pm

MJ, I glad you like our posts, we’ll do our best to keep them coming. Åhus is very quaint except in the Summer when the population explodes and it is crazy busy. Retirement has been an unexpected surprise for me. I wasn’t looking to hang it up yet, but for health reasons I did. Now, I wondering why I waited so long. Thanks for stopping by.

A great cocktail is a work of art. It looks like you found a really fantastic one. Also wonderful food! I love all the places you go and love reading about your travels.

May 13, 2019 at 3:19 pm

Mr. Jeff, I thought of you when we were there as I remembered you enjoyed a good cocktail. You would have loved the mixologist class for sure. They actually have a full cocktail class you can attend as well. We are more than happy to share our part of Sweden with you guys. Thanks so much for coming by and taking the time to comment.

May 13, 2019 at 4:01 am

hi ron not sure i’ve ever had a cosmo but i reckon i should try one as they sound delicious. i think your idea of having drop downs is a good one as it means if we/I don’t have enough time at one point, i can easily come back to it. what a life you lead!:-) heaps of fun! cheers sherry

May 13, 2019 at 3:26 pm

You do need to remedy that and shake yourself a cosmo or better yet, have Mr. P shake it for you. Don’t forget to put on some good shaking music. Thanks for the feedback on the drop-downs. I’ve not had anyone (yet) say they didn’t like them, so they’re a go for now. Sherry, life’s too short to not have all the fun you can. Thanks for popping in.

May 13, 2019 at 4:05 pm

Wow, this trip to Åhus sounds awesome! Laura and I typically plan a lot of our vacations around food and drink, and I know I would really enjoy a trip through the ABSOLUT factory. The fact that you got to mix your own cocktails at the end is really cool! Also, you are now a master shaker! That’s an impressive feat, my friend. 🙂

I really appreciate the backstory of ABSOLUT as I didn’t know much about it until now. In fact, the amount of wheat blows my mind. A kilo per bottle? That’s crazy! For me, I love a good drink or a good recipe, but I also love knowing the story behind it. That’s what makes it special when you recreate it back home. I hope you’ve used your new skills to whip up some Cosmos back home now! I like the dropdown feature, by the way. I dropped each one down and read about the history. 🙂

May 14, 2019 at 2:12 pm

David, the trip to Åhus was great fun and I’m betting you and Luara would really enjoy the visit. It was also impressive to watch the Absolut bartender (they have several) showing his skills at the Absolut Bar. It reminded me of Tom Cruise in the movie “Cocktail” (a movie from long ago). The history is amazing. I’m just finishing a biography of L.O.Smith the King of Vodka and he was one amazing man. Kinda the Henery Ford of vodka, except L.O. was broke when he died. But, he had one heck of a ride along the way. The kilo (2.2 pounds) of wheat is used for the pure distilled liqueur. Only 300 ml of this are used per 750 ml bottle. So, that 2.2 pounds of wheat make 1.26 cups or about 10 ounces of liquid. That’s why all of those pigs and cows are happy. Thanks for the feedback on the drop-downs I think they’re a winner. We really appreciate you taking the time to have a read.

I love your language lessons! Very interesting. Absolute vodka is a very popular brand in the UK too. Your foodie trip to their factory was very interesting indeed and for us to read about it too.I use this Vodka when I make a lemon sorbet at home. I think it is very good quality and I would fancy that Cosmopolitan too!!

May 14, 2019 at 2:19 pm

Alida, I’m sure you’d enjoy a Cosmo. I’m glad you found the info on the Swedish alphabet interesting. It’s challenging indeed. Oh, a lemon sorbet made with vodka. I think I’d like to learn more about how to make that. Thanks for stopping by.

' src=

May 13, 2019 at 8:05 pm

I do love a good Cosmo, Ron! Thanks for the recipe! It’s been awhile since I’ve had one, but it is a fine cocktail! I also love the ABSOLUT video – so funny and charming at the same time. Thanks for the recipe and the language lesson, I’ve always wondered about the A with the circle on top!

May 14, 2019 at 2:22 pm

Hi Laura, it was my pleasure to present Absolut’s official Cosmopolitan recipe. Now that Å is interesting, but the Ö and Ä have a story too. Thanks for coming by and having a read.

May 14, 2019 at 1:15 pm

Thanks for sharing the info on Absolut vodka. My hubby kept a bottle in the freezer so it was already pretty cold when he wanted to use it. I’m not into mixed cocktails (mainly a wine drinker) but I would certainly give this beverage a try. I always read your entire posts (that’s why I am often late in commenting). I think any time you can make things easier for your readers is a good thing. Cheers to cosmopolitans!

May 14, 2019 at 2:26 pm

Judi, I also keep a bottle of Absolut in the freezer as well as a couple of bottles of akvavit (Swedish snaps). Eva is a wine drinker too, but she does enjoy an occasional Cosmo. You should get hubby to shake you up one. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your input on the post.

May 14, 2019 at 1:22 pm

Oh my gosh – surprise! I just went back to play the employee video – too funny, especially the ending 🙂

May 14, 2019 at 2:28 pm

Judi, thanks for coming back and commenting on the video. I thought it was a hoot, so I’m glad it made you smile.

Ron, thank you! Need a good belly laugh and you certainly provided that today with your whimsical post. Want to apologize in advance…my mother is in hospice and will be seeing dad soon in heaven. I might not be around social media so much and wanted you to know why… Please take care

May 15, 2019 at 10:21 am

Bobbi, I’m so glad you found a good belly laugh in the post as it sounds as if you definitely needed it. Sorry to hear about your mom’s situation. We’ll be here when you make it back. But in the meantime take care of yourself.

May 14, 2019 at 9:46 pm

Oh Ron, what a fun post, especially that we often use Absolut in our cocktails, and cosmo is one of our favorites…I too love the Absolut Pear…so good, so fragrant and aromatic. I always learn a lot reading your posts…thank you! Have a great week!

May 15, 2019 at 10:28 am

Hi Juliana, you know we live less than an hour away from where Absolut is made but you’ll not see the flavored versions in our local Systembolaget (Government liquor store). Until our visit to Absolut I believed it was some sort of government regulation that keeps the flavored Absolut away. But, no it’s lack of popularity. Apparently, the flavored version isn’t that popular here. We checked and we can order any flavor, it’s just not stocked in the stores. Have you guys tried Absolu Grapefruit ? We tried it in a Grayhound cocktail in Åhus and it tasted great. Thanks for stopping by.

' src=

May 15, 2019 at 5:56 pm

Fun post! Absolutely fun, I should say. 🙂 The Cosmo is a pretty good drink, particularly nice in warm weather. Haven’t had one in ages — of course now I’m craving one. All that cranberry juice means it’s a morning drink, right? 🙂

May 16, 2019 at 2:38 pm

John, I must say I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the post. Coming from a master mixologist such as yourself its praise indeed. I do believe you would have enjoyed the trip. We’ve been on a number of distillery tours and I have to say this one’s up there at the top. I’ve not thought of that, yes cranberry is a morning drink. Let’s not forget the health benefits of cranberry juice as well.

May 16, 2019 at 9:18 am

When it comes to spirits, vodka is my first choice. Usually mixed with something. But I have never had a Cosmopolitan, what a shame. Interesting story, as always, I have learned a lot about Sweden since starting reading your blog. It was mostly Roxette, Abba and snow before. 🙂

May 16, 2019 at 2:51 pm

Hi Adina, you should give the Cosmo a try. Spin-up some Roxette tunes and get to shaking. My wife is a huge Roxette fan as well as Abba. Me, I’m more an Abba fan, more my time frame. Snow, well we still get some, but not like we used to. Thanks for taking the time to have a read.

May 16, 2019 at 10:42 pm

I usually drink wine but when I have a cocktail it is an Absolute Citron Cosmopolitan and like you I like it with Cointreau as well. 😀

May 17, 2019 at 9:20 am

Karen, you and Eva would get along just fine as she too is a wine drinker and if she does have a cocktail, like you, it’s a Cosmo. Thanks for taking the time to have a read.

Love the pictures especially the oversized Absolut bottles! And excellent choice on a Cosmo cocktail. Love the certificate – so much fun!

May 17, 2019 at 9:17 am

It was a fun and educational journey indeed. Yea, the certificate was worth getting for sure. Thanks for taking the time to have a read and to make a comment.

May 20, 2019 at 12:05 am

Thank you another wonderful travel post, language lesson, funny video, and recipe, Ron! I do love a good ‘Cosmo’ and now I have to do a taste test between Absolut and the Ketel One that we usually have in the house. I think fresh lime juice really makes the best Cosmo. I never thought of using an orange peel but usually opt for a twist of lemon. But the orange makes sense because of the Triple Sec or Cointreu. Now, I’m thinking of enjoying one before dinner tonight 🙂

May 20, 2019 at 1:58 pm

Hi Susan, I hope you enjoy your Cosmo. I’d be curious to see if one could taste the difference between a Cosmo made with Absolut vs Ketel One. I can tell the difference between one made with Absolut and Grey Goose for sure, but then I’m not a Grey Goose fan. Thanks for coming by and taking the time to comment.

May 20, 2019 at 8:22 am

As usual Ron, I am late again in reading (and enjoying) your post…..time seems to evaporate! Such a pretty village and I am so glad you included the recipe for the Cosmopolitan….I’ve never had one but I have a feeling that is going to change now. One of my dearest friends is Finnish and I often have heard her extol the virtues of the new season potatoes at the end of Winter….I had to smile when I saw them on your table 🙂 Where are we going next?

May 20, 2019 at 2:02 pm

Kathryn, I hope you enjoy your first Cosmo. There is definitely something about fresh new Scandinavian potatoes. I actually wrote a post last June called The fresh potato and the Swedish obsession with them… that talks of the subject. I bet your Finnish friend would agree with the obsession.

' src=

May 21, 2019 at 4:57 am

What a fun tour! Especially when you get to have a drink or two. Congrats on your certificate! Cosmopolitan is my kind of a cocktail and I so wish I was there with you and Eva. Thanks for another informative post, Ron! I always learn so much from you and the giggle is just a bonus. Have a wonderful rest of the week!

May 21, 2019 at 9:17 am

Hi Jas, We’re glad you enjoyed the tour and hope you do get a chance to sip on an Absolut Cosmo soon. So nice that you saw the humor in the video. It certainly made me giggle…Thanks for taking the time to stop by and having a read.

May 22, 2019 at 11:16 am

You read my mind Ron – I was wondering where in the world is Åhus and what’s that little ° over the A ! And I loved reading about it here – that ABSOLUT factory tour sounds wonderful as does this cosmo! BTW I had no idea there was so much that went into making the perfect cosmo – now I know why I haven’t ever made one! 🙂

May 22, 2019 at 1:31 pm

Hi Shashi, I’m glad we cleared up those mysteries for you. The ABSOLUT factory tour was fantastic, but the Cosmo was even better. One shouldn’t fear shaking-up a batch or three of Cosmos as the recipe is pretty forgiving as long as it has plenty of ABSOLUT. Thanks for coming by and having a read.

' src=

June 3, 2019 at 4:25 pm

Wow, Ron. Thanks for sharing the tour with us! That visual presentation is quite stunning and the history of Absolut is interesting. And now you have the bragging rights of being the best cosmo maker among friends.

June 4, 2019 at 9:50 am

Thanks for taking the tour. We are fond of that area and will return again one day. Yea, I had to hide that certificate as everyone wanted me to shake a Cosmo for them, but nobody brought the Absolut (which cost US$30+/bottle). Thanks for having a read.

The distilleries behind the spirits of Sweden

When talking about Swedish spirits and distilleries, most people have heard of Absolut Vodka. While we're absolutely proud that this well-known spirit has put Sweden on the map for quality spirit production, there are many more Swedish distilleries worth mentioning – and visiting. Here you can read about some of them, but of course we start with Absolut Vodka.

1 Swedish vodka from Absolut Vodka

Walk into a bar anywhere in the world and more often than not you will spot Absolut with its characteristic clear bottle and the silver imprint of L.O Smith. Lars Olsson Smith was a maverick Swedish entrepreneur, commonly known as “the king of spirits”, who founded what is now Absolut back in 1879. All ingredients in Absolut Vodka come from southern Sweden and all production takes place in or around Åhus, a small town in Skåne county where Absolut Vodka was founded. The autumn wheat that is used in the vodka is sown, grown and harvested by local farmers.

If you really want to get into the spirit, book a guided tour of the Absolut Home and learn more about one of the world's most famous spirits.

2 Swedish gin from Hernö Gin

If you had to guess where the best gin in the world is from, you probably would not think of a small distillery in rural northern Sweden. Hernö Gin became the first Swedish gin distillery when it was founded in 2011 in the village of Dala, outside Härnösand, in the High Coast . Since then, it has received more awards than any other gin in Europe. Inspired by the surronding nature, Hernö Gin is made from organic botanicals, Swedish wheat and water from their own well.

Hernö Gin distillery can arrange guided tours in English if pre-booked (minimum 10 people). If you are in the capital, visit Hernö Gin Bar in Stockholm.

3 Swedish whisky from High Coast Whisky

On the banks of the mighty Ångermanälven River, which flows through the High Coast , is the historic brick building that houses one of Sweden's northernmost whisky distilleries. High Coast Whisky's spirit is carefully crafted from quality ingredients and pure spring water from the nearby Lake Bålsjön. The area has large temperature differences between summer and winter, which contributes to the unique flavour development of this Swedish whisky.

On request, High Coast Whisky distillery can arrange whisky tastings and guided tours in English.

4 Swedish whisky, vodka and gin from Spirit of Hven

Situated in the Öresund strait that divides Sweden and Denmark, the island of Hven is home to a population of fewer than 400 people. It also houses the  Spirit of Hven distillery , which became the third pot-still distillery in Sweden and the smallest of its kind in the world when it was founded in 2008. Since then, Spirit of Hven’s artisanal, organic brands of single malt whisky, vodka and gin have gained quite the reputation as top-quality tipples, making them well worth the trip to this remote island distillery.

The distillery offers guided tours and tastings. You can also stay overnight at their charming hotel village Backafallsbyn .

5 Swedish whisky from Mackmyra Whisky Village

The year was 1998 and eight university friends had their annual meeting in Sälen. A question came up: why is there no Swedish malt whisky? Then a vision took shape to create the country's first malt whisky. A year later, Mackmyra Swedish Whisky was founded. Today, this Swedish distillery is known for developing a 30-litre cask that allows the whisky to mature more intensely. Mackmyra Whisky Village is located just outside Gävle, an hour and a half north of Stockholm. Here you will find their eco-friendly Gravity Distillery , which uses gravity force to reduce its carbon footprint.

Mackmyra Whisky Village organises tours and whiskey tastings in English and is also home to the Mackmyra Bar & Bistro.
