Entertainment

We paid $161 for two exit row seats thinking there’d be extra leg room and not be cramped! The price we paid was a rip-off for these seats and the plane was extremely narrow and cramped. The male crew were okay but not super-friendly. When we picked up our luggage at baggage claim, someone ripped my luggage with a knife or blunt object and destroyed it!! I will be filling a claim for this and took pictures. I heard great reviews about this airline but am disappointed.

Travel time from Phoenix to Dulles

How long does it really take to fly from Phoenix to Dulles? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach Dulles, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Thursday, 11:19 am :  start in Phoenix drive for about 11 minutes most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 12:25 pm at the latest

12:00 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

1:00 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

1:30 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

1:45 pm :  board American Airlines Inc. flight you can scroll down to view other airlines that fly this route

1:55 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

2:10 pm :  wheels up! take-off from PHX fly for about 3.5 hours in the air

8:49 pm (local time) :   Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) Dulles is 3 hours ahead of Phoenix so the time in Phoenix is actually 5:49 pm taxi on the runway for an average of 9 minutes to the gate

8:58 pm (local time) :  arrive at the gate at DCA deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 1 hour to your destination

10:07 pm (local time) :  arrive in Dulles

Now finally, let's look at an example flight from PHX to DCA and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from Phoenix to Dulles including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 8 hours

How far is Dulles from Phoenix? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 1,960 miles or 3154 km

Flight time: 3 hours, 50 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 7 hours, 48 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 2.6x faster , and saves you about 5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a medium length flight, so unless you have a nice private jet, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

Southwest Airlines Set To Challenge United Airlines Between Phoenix & Washington Dulles

  • Southwest Airlines will compete with United Airlines between Phoenix, Arizona, and Washington, DC.
  • Both carriers will utilize the Boeing 737 on the route.
  • Southwest will operate 15 flights in each direction in April, offering more than 5,200 seats.

Southwest Airlines , the second-largest carrier at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), is preparing to commence service to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) next week. The move will undoubtedly be a shake-up for United Airlines , the sole operator between the two airports for over a decade.

As part of its flight schedule extension last fall, Southwest announced the new service. Between both carriers, the route will only be operated by Boeing 737 variants, even though United also has several Airbus narrowbodies in its fleet.

Flight details

The service will begin on April 11th. Flights will operate in each direction five times weekly, on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The flight numbers will remain the same, but flight times will depend on the day of the week.

Get tickets for these flights here

On Saturdays and Sundays, the scheduled departure and arrival times differ slightly from weekday times.

Data from aviation analytics provider Cirium shows that Southwest will operate a total of 30 flights in April – 15 each way. Interestingly, the aircraft types will not only depend on the specific flight but also on the direction. Currently, the airline has the 737-800 deployed both ways, while the MAX 8 is only scheduled to fly from IAD to PHX.

In that particular direction, the variant will operate nine flights while the -800 will operate six. Southwest will not deploy its smallest aircraft, the 737-700, on the route until May. However, it will be sparse as the variant is only scheduled to fly one flight in each direction.

Capacity comparison

The airline’s MAX 8 and -800s have the same single-class cabin layout, comprising a total of 175 seats . Throughout April, Southwest will offer 5,250 seats between PHX and IAD – a new challenge to United, which has claimed the entirety of the route’s market share since early 2010 when US Airways exited the route. The challenge will not be much, as it operates the route daily, given that IAD is one of its hubs.

Three of United’s five 737 variants within its fleet will be deployed on the route in April: the -800, the MAX 8, and the MAX 9. A total of 180 flights are scheduled during the month, resulting in 30,270 seats offered, according to Cirium. In May, Southwest will boost its capacity to just over 7,600 seats across 44 flights. United will still dominate, with 168 flights offering more than 28,800 seats on the same 737 variants and the -900ER.

No Airbuses?

The Chicago-based carrier has over 100 A320 family aircraft supporting its domestic operations, but its 737 family fleet is significantly larger at over 400 planes. Many of these aircraft were inherited from Continental Airlines when it merged with United in 2012, while additional aircraft orders were placed after the acquisition. Prior to the merger, United’s domestic operation was mainly supported by its A319, A320s, and 757-200s. The A320 family aircraft still operate today, while its legacy 757s were retired years ago.

United Airlines' Boeing 737-900s: What To Expect On Board

Between PHX and IAD, United has deployed a mixture of Airbus and Boeing aircraft over the years, but the former has always been dwarfed since the merger. Neither the A319 nor the A320 have been deployed on the route since January, February, March, April, and September of last year, according to Cirium.

Dulles Adds Sun Country as 42nd Airline

Sun Country Airlines plane at Dulles

The airline offers nonstop service to Minneapolis.

By Colleen Kelleher April 12, 2024

Sun Country Airlines became the 42 nd airline at Dulles International Airport this week when it launched nonstop service to Minneapolis.

The route is part of Sun Country’s 10-city summer expansion , which includes Syracuse, New York, and Toronto.

Sun Country will have three weekly flights to Minneapolis in the spring, six per week during the summer, and four per week in the fall.

“The employees of Dulles International are 100 percent focused on taking care of our customers, just like Sun Country is, as part of our mission. We are fully prepared for an expansion of growth at this airport, which includes carriers like Sun Country,” said Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Vice President and Dulles Airport Manager Richard Golinowski, in a statement .

Rose Neale, senior vice president and general counsel of Sun Country Airlines, calls the flights out of Dulles a “new opportunity” for Minnesotans.

“The monuments, museums, government buildings, and history of the nation’s capital is a perfect vacation for leisure travelers and families. And we invite your region’s travelers to enjoy summer in Minnesota — the land of 10,000 lakes,” Neal said.

Dulles, the fastest-growing international gateway in the United States, served more than 25 million passengers in 2023.

Swiss International Air Lines, in late March, launched daily nonstop service between Dulles and Zurich on an Airbus A330-300.

As the 41 st airline at Dulles, Swiss International now has eight U.S. gateways.

“Adding Washington as a destination to our portfolio, we’re very proud that this strengthening of the relationship between Switzerland and the U.S. is really taking place; and it’s a pleasure for us to stand here today four years after the announcement and to be proud to begin this new route,” said Swiss International CEO Dieter Vranckx in March. “Our development of an airline doesn’t stop by just adding capacity. We are investing around $5 billion in equipment in new aircraft, new seats, investing in our employees and investing in the customer.”

Top 5 airlines serving from Dulles Intl to Arizona

The experience was good and the flight departed on time and landed early

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Seats in first class on the E175 recline too far back. I was in 2A, and the man in 1A fully reclined almost the entire flight. It took 6-7 inches of space away from me and made it very difficult to work on my laptop.

On 2 different flights the wifi was horrible and there was no drink or snack service.

Wifi wasn’t working well so we couldn't view any media.

Flight was late. Club was full. Experience is exactly what I expected.

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Just happy I flew Qatar Airways awesome no wonder they are #1 in the world right now! The food was just delicious, very courteous, professional crew.

It was good no problems made it on time for the next flight overseas!

It was a really long flight from Doha to Philadelphia and it was overall a good one. The one area that I would comment on is that there is a lot of single-use plastic and disposables in the meal service for American Airlines. It would be great to see more circular options in the meal service to reduce the amount of waste.

Suddenly Flight has been change by Qatar and there’s no information is there of us from Bom to Doha and counter person is behaving like Qatar owner next I will not buy Qatar and I will not suggest anyone to fly in Qatar

The flight was good but my neighbor had the vent open full power for the whole flight and because the air was blowing from the side instead of from the top and I got very cold and ended up with a sore throat.

The crew was fantastic and the over flight was perfect as well.

They shld provide food. Between food they are giving 10 hours gap which is toooo much

The crew was great and the food and liquor offerings were good. Seats were a bit cramped. Flight arrived early at destination. That's a plus.

All over with Qatar airlines my experience was really bad due to delays and then putting me on different airlines and after 8 hours of wait I had to listen to their is no plane to fly for another 24 hours. Wore experience ever.

I had already opted for Vegan food before 2 months yet they say we have no record for it,

Paying for reserved seats and never received the seats I paid for !! Just fake and a surprise out of their " box "

Turkish airline always good Only Turkish representatives at the gave need to be more helpfull to any staff who traveling on Turkish airline . One situation happened Ist to jfk on Feb 29 TK3 had seats I asked them to transfer me to tk3 because Feb 29 tk1 was oversold and they advise me that I might not make it for tk1 I asked them to transfer me to tk3 and they say no they can’t do it I been telling them you know that I don’t have a chance for tk 1 why would you let plane go with some empty seats on tk3 if you can transfer me to tk3 and have less staff on tk1 and still told me no I waited for tk1 9 hours and only last minute I got seat on tk1 It was not easy situation but I am glad I made it home Thank you Turkish Airline One more suggestion for Turkish Airline you need to make a FIRST CLASS cabin it would be so cool 🆒 Good luck all the best See you more

First class payment but wife’s seat broken, would recline but not lay flat. On previous flight, delays and ground crew malfunctions connecting jetway made us miss flight to Houston. I asked twice for a cart to assist us getting across the massive Istanbul Airport, but was denied. We are both over 70.

My flight had two legs. When checking in at the first leg the agent offering for a deal to upgrade the leg to first class for $199. He then claimed I would be able to upgrade the second leg once I got to the next airport. I declined and when I inquired about upgrading at the second airport, the cost was $1,300. I also had an issue at the airport lounge. I am allowed one guest in the lounge. My friend came in the lounge for less than 5 minutes and left when she couldn’t get a sleeping suite. I wanted to bring in another friend. The airport staff first started acting as though they didn’t understand English and then became upset when I asked for their names so I could file a complaint. As an elite member I knew they could do more but were not. One of the agents started over talking me and walked away mid conversation dismissing my request for assistance. A man claiming to be the manager said you were asking for her name. He also never tried to assist me or see what was going on. He claimed the interactions were recorded and management would see everything. I’m not sure how that would assist me days later. I am sure it didn’t help that I was a black American woman.

Better attitude training for staff at airport, better training for flight attendants, better food, don’t put us with all the crying babies that cried nonstop for 12 plus hours.

Crew announced boarding started and they asked passengers to form a queue. Actual boarding didn’t start and queue was not moving for around 40-50 mins. Very poor management.

It was a terrible airline. The air hostess and the people in the flight, just very rude.

Crew on this flight was terrible. Especially one practicular female , she was harassing us and other families with children. Flight was good overall, if not her being rude and aggressive

Istanbul to Miami Sector the plane was nice and clean except for no WiFi during the entire flight. The flight from Karachi to Istanbul was another story .The sad part is we paid for business class to be comfortable. The foot rest didn’t work. The flight attendant had to push the seat to put to recline position and/or put it back. This was not only for me but for other passengers in business class. The tray table would not come out so had to get help from the passenger sitting next to me. I understand that they may have to use old planes but Turkish Airlines have to make sure that the things are functional especially the duration of flight is six hours and they are charging a lot of money. It seemed that i was flying a domestic sector instead of an international flight.

A very good airlines; we were pleasantly surprised by the attentive professional and service! Great job.

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

The plane was delayed 2 hours. The wifi did not work. The seat in first class was not comfortable because the bottom felt like it lost all of its padding. And I did not like when the flight attendant made me wait at my seat to use the bathroom and didn't tell me why. If there were too many people using the 1st Class bathroom, she should have told me to go in the back, coach bathrooms. I guess I have to feel fortunate that they found 2 local pilots to still fly the plane tonight after the original pilots ended up at an airport 60 miles away due to high winds.

The crew were really great, but the 4 hour delay in small chunks was the worst.

Just a crappy airline. The same every time. You feel you are a cow on a farm. You are being being whipped and pulled.

Wasn’t very crowded. Seamless processes. No issues traveling with two little kids.

My interaction with the flight attendent Eve was horrible. I was seated in 3F and was blown away watching her repeatedly skip me as she took other customer orders for lunch...she took the customer next to me but skipped me, then took everyone's order around me (in front of and behind me) . After she had taken every customer's orders to include those behind me, she came to me and said we are out of everything except one last item. I was mortified, in that, I am a 1k flyer, had pre-ordered AND as an African American could only assume why she repeatedly skipped me...mortified. no words

The Flight was good, pilot seemed very skillful. My wheel chair sister who could barely walk was allotted the second last seat in the aircraft, with great difficulty she managed to reach on her seat, as she required attendance we were given separate seat, even on request no one cared, so much so there were single passengers who were given twin seats. May not be taken as complaint but a reminder to the checkin staff to keep in mind in future the allottment of wheel chair passengers seats.

Almost 2 hour delay in boarding with all standing ready to board at original time. No explanation given.

787-9 Transcon from IAD-LAX FYI no meals in premium plus, not considered Premium - seats are wonderful https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/inflight/premium-services.html Horrible handling of delayed flight

It was a great experience. Do not normally fly United. Very nice. Thank you and happy holidays

Overall the flights pretty good. The snacks we’re good and they were plenty of them. Both boarding and deplaning went quickly.

Delayed abs delayed Gate crew giving poor info - we are definitely leaving at —- Ultimately to cancel flight after 4+ hours of delays Just cancel it earlier

The flight was scheduled to depart DCA at 12:30 pm but was delayed twice on the ground so that we were finally scheduled to depart at around 4:00 pm. Once we boarded, it was announced that takeoff would be delayed again to fix a hydraulic problem which delayed our eventual takeoff until around 5:00 pm. Once we departed, it was a smooth flight back to ORD. We did not get any explanation about what caused the original significant delay. In my experience, this happens frequently with AA.

Lots of weather delays that were poorly communicated and managed. I get there are weather delays but they didn’t make it clear what was happening or comfortable on the plane

Everything was on time; the flight attendants and the gate personnel were very pleasant and helpful.

Our second leg to Jackson WY was unable to land due to weather. We were flown back to Dallas after stopping in SLC. We were given hotel rooms and vouchers. We were told that we would be back on the same plane in the morning. Instead we were given a different flight with different seats. Not a good experience. No one knew what was going on.

Perfect flight. On time departure and early arrival. Smooth flight.

Awful! The flight was delayed and we sat on the plane in DCA for an hour because fuel was out in the wrong part of the plane and would not be accessible during flight. So the plane had to be refueled in correct tank. They also allowed someone to get off of the plane. This delayed my six hour flight by an hour and made me miss my connecting flight. I ran to new gate and American Airlines agents new about the delay and even knew that I was trying to make the connection. They knew thru communication with my friend while in flight that I was in the airport and running to the new gate and they still closed the gate and refused to let me on the new flight despite plane still being at the gate. It was horrible and I had to be rebooked on a flight for 24 hours later. This has been a nightmare and if American Airlines can cause customers to be delayed and then have zero empathy as having an on time flight was more important to them than helping a customer who was delayed by no fault of her own, then it's seems that it's not a company that I want to continue to give my loyalty to. I'm so disgusted.

Help was available but timing was bad in my case

It was a horrible snow storm, but updates were inconsistent and the app never displayed a remotely accurate time or gate until very close to boarding.

Here’s How the 2024 Solar Eclipse Will Impact Air Travel

Meghna Maharishi and Elizabeth Casolo, Skift

April 4th, 2024 at 8:51 AM EDT

The solar eclipse will have a minimal impact on air travel, but airlines are operating a slew of flights that will give flyers a special view of the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Leading up to April 8, cities in the eclipse’s path of totality prepare for an influx of tourists. But, even with some extra traffic for airports and airlines, operations likely won’t look too different.

Skift named April’s eclipse “this year’s top travel phenomenon,” with cities such as Buffalo, Indianapolis, and Dallas gearing up for the big day. Some airlines offered specialized experiences for eclipse travel, and tourism bureaus coordinated events to celebrate the evening.

With these plans in place, those flying in may wonder about what to expect in the air.

Will There Be Any Travel Disruptions?

It’s possible. The Federal Aviation Administration warned of potentially higher traffic at airports in the eclipse’s path.

“Traffic should anticipate delays during peak traffic periods,” the FAA said in a statement .

Some airports did not express concern about incoming travelers but still plan to take precautions. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority operates the Niagara Falls International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport, two airports on the eclipse path. NFTA Aviation Deputy Director Russell Stark said air traffic control is preparing for more traffic, but the airport itself has not observed more traffic than usual.

“We have not seen any increase in the traveling public coming via airplane,” Stark said. He expressed concern about the roadways beyond the airport and does not have enough information to know if air traffic from other airports would impact arrivals or departures.

A spokesperson from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport also did not have clarity on the airport traffic, but “the airport’s rental car partners… expect to have the busiest days on record for car rentals around the time of the eclipse.”

Other than the special eclipse flights run by certain airlines, Indianapolis International Airport does not foresee a big change in operations. The airport estimates the highest traffic period will be April 9, as people leave the morning after the eclipse.

“Nearly 20% of our traffic on Tuesday, April 9, will be departing by 7 a.m.” said Megan Carrico, director of public affairs for the Indianapolis Airport Authority.

So, while there may be more air traffic congestion in the hours after the eclipse, expect busier roads in cities along the eclipse’s path, as well.

What Are Airports Doing to Prepare for the Eclipse?

The FAA advised airports to minimize procedures that could take attention away from potential traffic. The agency said pilot training operations at airports may either be “extremely limited” or “possibly prohibited” during the eclipse.

“The bottom line is it’s ‘operations normal’ around here with a few minor changes on our part,” Stark said. Stark emphasized that contractors working on projects around the airport need to prioritize eclipse safety, something that’s been incorporated into their daily briefings. NFTA employees also have access to eclipse glasses in case they work outside during that time.

Carrico said Indianapolis International Airport will apply its experience handling traffic from major sporting events during the eclipse. The airport also partnered with art students and Visit Indy to make decorative posters commemorating the event.

Is It Safe to Fly in the Middle of a Solar Eclipse?

Yes. Whenever a plane is in the path of a solar eclipse, the sky will look dark for a few minutes. A solar eclipse doesn’t interfere with an airline’s operations — it’s almost no different than flying in the night, said Dr. Frederic Bertley, the CEO of the Center of Science and Industry, a museum in Columbus, Ohio.

“It shouldn’t impact how the aircraft itself will fly in terms of solar radiation or flares or darkening of the skies,” Bertley said.

A solar eclipse wouldn’t impact a pilot’s ability to fly an aircraft, either.

“It’s really from an aircraft and a pilot’s viewpoint,” Bertley said. “It’s just a matter of light versus less light. That’s all it is.”

The Air Line Pilots Association said pilots could expect to see skies as dark as night if they are flying in the path of totality. Otherwise, travelers on flights further away from the path may see a dusky sky.

Can I Experience the Eclipse From a Plane?

Yes. While many may purchase solar eclipse sunglasses to view the event from the ground up, witnessing it on a plane can also have its benefits.

The main advantage of viewing an eclipse from a plane is that it’s above cloud cover, which could offer the clearest view. Bertley said around 40% to 60% of the country that’s in the path of totality will most likely have some cloud cover.

And while someone on the ground might see an eclipse for a mere two to three minutes, a passenger on a plane in the path of totality could possibly view the eclipse for as long as six-and-a-half minutes.

This is because a plane flies at around 500 miles per hour while the eclipse moves at 1,000 miles per hour, which essentially gives passengers the ability to see 50% more of the eclipse, Bertley said.

However, for passengers on flights that are in the path of the eclipse, where you sit on the plane to view the eclipse matters. For example, if a traveler is on a flight leaving from Texas that goes along the path of totality from west to east, that traveler would need to sit on the right side of the plane to view the eclipse. Passengers sitting on the left side in this instance won’t see the eclipse. According to a spokesperson at Delta Air Lines, though, the airline is working with the FAA to approve S-turns on its special path-of-totality flights, ensuring both sides of the plane can view the eclipse.

American Airlines also said it was working with the FAA to ensure smooth operations and was anticipating increased air traffic at locations in or near the path of totality.

Delta offered a special flight from Austin to Detroit that covers the path of totality. After this flight sold out in under 24 hours, Delta started offering a flight from Dallas Fort Worth to Detroit . United Airlines is offering a slew of flights from Chicago and Houston that will allow travelers to catch a glimpse of the event. And Southwest Airlines has flights departing from Dallas Love Field, Austin, and St. Louis in the eclipse’s path.

Rare 4.8 magnitude quake rattles Northeast

By Elise Hammond , Leinz Vales and Matt Meyer , CNN

Northeast earthquake is disrupting air travel

From CNN's Greg Wallace

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the Northeast is impacting air travel.

The Federal Aviation Administration said flights to the New York Kennedy, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Newark airports were being held.

The air traffic control tower at Newark Liberty airport is being evacuated, a controller said in a radio transmission after the earthquake. That meant the flights were being held while controllers moved to an alternate location.

"Nobody's going to go anywhere for the time being," a controller said over the radio frequency.

The runways were in the process of being inspected for damage. Shortly after the earthquake, controllers at LaGuardia were still clearing flights for departure there.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Jeannie Shiffer calls the earthquake’s impact on air travel a “rapidly evolving situation.”

FAA will have to inspect runways at New York’s JFK and Newark airports before operations can resume.

No reports of damage in Rockland County following quake, city official says

From CNN staff

There are no reports of damage in New York’s Rockland County following this morning’s earthquake, according to a statement from the county's executive Ed Day.

Day urged residents to remain calm and said the quake was felt in Albany, through the Lower Hudson Valley, and in New York City.

“So far there are no reports of any damage, but the County is still assessing the impact and working with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory research center and the State of New York to gather more information and will publicize as appropriate,” he said.

“As aftershocks are common following earthquakes, residents are advised to stay alert and be prepared for any further seismic activity,” Day added.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattles Northeast cities, USGS says

A preliminary 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, according to the data from the US Geological Survey.

The epicenter, which occurred at 10:23 a.m. ET, was just northeast of Lebanon, New Jersey, less than 50 miles west of New York City.

The light quake was shallow, just below the surface at a depth of 5 kilometers, which made it easier for residents in affected areas to feel the shaking.

The light shaking would be unlikely to cause damage,  according initial data indications  from the USGS. Initial reports indicated a 4.8 magnitude quake, but that was revised to 4.7 before being adjusted back to 4.8. This could change again as more data is reviewed.

American Airlines is launching a new nonstop flight from Phoenix.

The largest carrier at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport announced plans to fly a once-daily route to Provo, Utah, about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, starting in October 2024.

American will also offer twice-daily flights to Provo from Dallas-Fort Worth. The announcements bring daily, year-round service to Provo Airport for the first time. In a statement, Provo Airport Director Brian Torgersen described Phoenix as an "exceptional major hub."

Here's what we know about American Airlines' new flight Phoenix to Provo flight.

When do American's Phoenix to Provo flights begin?

American Airlines' Phoenix-Provo flights will begin Oct. 7 on the Bombardier CRJ-700 airplane, which seats 65 passengers including nine in first class.

Phoenix-Provo flights will depart from Sky Harbor at 12:15 p.m. Arizona time. Provo-Phoenix flights will depart at 3:28 p.m. Mountain time.

American will be the third airline in metro Phoenix to offer service to Provo. Allegiant Air flies there from both Sky Harbor and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in east Mesa, and Phoenix-Provo was one of Breeze Airways' first routes out of Sky Harbor .

How to book American Airlines Phoenix-Provo flights

Tickets go on sale starting April 22, American spokesman Frankie McLister told The Arizona Republic. Book at www.aa.com .

What is Provo best known for?

Provo is best known as the home of Brigham Young University. The campus and its three free museums − the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum, BYU Museum of Paleontology and the BYU Museum of Art − are among the city's cultural spots.

Provo also is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Tripadvisor users ranked the Provo Canyon scenic drive and one of the canyon's waterfalls, Bridal Veil Falls, as the No. 1 and No. 2 things to do in Provo . The city is about 35 miles from Mount Timpanogos, the second-highest peak in Utah's Wasatch Range.
