📍 This tour includes sensitive destinations, therefore we request you to be as environmentally friendly as possible. 🍏 All food on this tour is prepared mostly with local ingredients. 🍃 Hotels with this mark are sustainable. We hope you will take them into account when making your reservation.

Upon your arrival to the Lima Airport, you will be welcomed by one of our representatives, who will provide a brief introduction to the city and our services while driving you to your hotel in Miraflores. You will have the remainder of the day free to relax and get acquainted with the city at your own pace. Depending on your arrival time, we have plenty of suggestions for you so you can make the most of your first day in Lima.

Today you will get to know the city of kings, Lima. You will be picked up in the morning and visit the colonial center of Lima. There you can see the Spanish colonial architecture as well as some government buildings, the Plaza San Martin, Plaza Mayor, the Central Bank Museum and the San Francisco Convent. At the end of the tour, we will visit parts of the modern districts of San Isidro and Miraflores.

In the morning you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the airport, from where you will fly to Arequipa. Once there, you will be taken to your hotel. Arequipa, known as the “White City”, for its unique architecture, is surrounded by three impressive volcanoes. Today, you will have a free day to explore the city by yourself.

Early in the morning, you will embark on an amazing journey to one of the deepest Canyons in the world! We will travel across snow-covered volcanoes, quaint Andean villages, finally arriving in the Colca Valley. One of our stops will be the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, whose rugged terrain is home to vast herds of Vicuñas, Alpacas and Llamas. Next we will visit the Mirador de los Andes (Lookout Point of the Andes) in Patapampa. This lookout point, at 16,100 ft / 1408 m above sea level, offers spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks of the various volcanoes surrounding Arequipa, including the Hualca Calca, the Sabancaya and the Ampato. After, you will head to the town of Chivay (close to where the Colca Valley begins) for a closer inspection of the impressive system of platforms and terraces built by the ancient Collagua and Cabana inhabitants. After lunch, you will make your way to the hotel. The rest of the afternoon will be free to take advantage of the hotel’s amenities, enjoy the tranquility of your surroundings, and simply rest and rejuvenate for the next day. Optional: After reaching Chivay Village, we will encounter La Calera Hot Springs, which boasts a wonderful array of hot spring pools, fed by the bubbling brooks that emerge from the mountain sides all around – they average a natural temperature of 85°C. Said to be wondrous for curing arthritis and rheumatism. These clean and well-kept thermal baths are not to be missed.

Early in the morning, we will head off to the Condor Cross Lookout Point. Which is an incredible vantage point where you will be able to look out across one of the world’s deepest canyons and if we get lucky, see the majestic Andean Condor in flight! After lunch, you will experience an awe-inspiring trip of about six hours through the unique landscapes of the high mountain plain. A few miles away, you will be able to see the grand Bosque de Piedras de Imata in the distance. You will then arrive in Lagunillas, which sits at 13,684 ft / 4170 m above sea level. Here you will observe numerous species of migratory and Andean birds. Among them, Andean flamingos and crakes. You will end your trip at the legendary Lake Titicaca.

Today we will explore the world’s highest navigable lake, Titcaca, and explore its unique and breathtaking islands. We will start by visiting the floating Islands of Uros. There are about 40 small islands made totally of totora, a natural reed that grows around the lake. The friendly island inhabitants will invite you to get to know their traditional lifestyle and customs. Continuing our journey across the waters of the lake, we will arrive to Taquile Island, a quaint and picturesque place with a unique landscape due to the Incan terraces built around it. Here we will be able to learn ancestral weaving techniques from the locals… amazing! We will have lunch in Taquile before heading back to our hotel in the afternoon.

Today we will embark on the most scenic trip of the Peruvian Andes! On board a comfortable bus, we will pass different Andean villages, snow capped mountains, and herds of Llamas. Some of our stops include: Andahuaylillas, also known as the Sistine Chapel of America; Racchi, the ruins of a well known Inca Temple to the God Wiracocha and La Raya Pass, which is the highest point of the Peruvian Altiplano. We will have lunch at a traditional Andean restaurant before we arrive to Cusco, the Capital of the Inca Empire.

Today you will experience a half-day private guided excursion throughout the Sacred Valley. Today we visit the sites of Maras and Moray. En route, you will witness some of the best sites in the valley. First, we will stop at the ancient salt mines, nearby the town of Maras, then, at the huge circular agricultural terraces at Moray built by the Incas in natural sinkholes on a limestone plateau overlooking the Urubamba Valley. Afterward we will head back to Cusco.

Today we return to the Sacred Valley of the Incas and make our way to Pisac, where we will visit both the artisan market and the ruins of Pisac. We then continue to Urubamba, where you will have the opportunity to sample various Andean dishes at a buffet. After a short drive, we reach Ollantaytambo. There we will visit the Inca fort with its typical Inca terraces and you will be taken to your hotel, where you will spend the night.

After a very early rise, you will board the train from the Ollantaytambo Station heading to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). This train journey is a spectacle in itself! You will be able to appreciate Peru’s immense biodiversity as you witness the landscape transition from Andean green fields to lush rainforest, descending alongside the Urubamba River. Upon your arrival to the Aguas Calientes train station, you will take a 20 minute bus ride up to the spectacular site of Machu Picchu. You will explore this enigmatic sanctuary where your expert guide will lead you through the ruins, providing archaeological and historical information on key areas of interest, including The Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (the Sun Dial) and the Sacred Plaza. You will appreciate the most amazing views from the top of the citadel! This is an opportunity to revel in the energy and atmosphere of one of the most significant and spectacular archaeological sites of the world, surrounded by the cloud forest. You will also have the opportunity to see Llamas meandering around in their natural environment. After descending to Machu Picchu Pueblo, you will have some free time for lunch, and wander through this picturesque town. In the afternoon, you will board the return train to Ollantaytambo Station where one of our representatives will be waiting for you to take you back to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

At a set time our representative will accompany you to the airport to take our flight back to Lima and connect with your international flight home.

Andes to the Amazon: a Journey That is All About the Journey

Posted by James Kinard on June 6th, 2019

I really enjoy looking back at different trips I’ve planned for Vaya travelers. It’s amazing to see how some destinations have changed over the years, while others have remained largely untouched. For me, an incredible way to experience a place that has had minimal outside influence is on an overland trip to the Amazon. This part of the world is accessed by driving up over the Andes and then taking a boat down the Madre de Dios River into the Amazon basin.

On the river

The journey from the Andes to the Amazon invokes the best of travel for me, combining world renowned birding and wildlife opportunities – and yes, even if you aren’t an ornithologist, you will still appreciate these feathered friends – remote eco-lodges, ever-changing landscapes, and the feeling that comes with being in a truly remote and unique ecosystem. So, here’s to one of my favorite trips, and a bit of what makes it special:

Traveling from Cusco, going up over the Andes and down into the Amazon Basin, is one of the most epic ways one can visit the Amazon.  The journey is all-encompassing, allowing you to immerse yourself in several different ecosystems as you travel up into the mountains (going up from a starting point of 11,200 feet is saying something!) before descending into the Amazon basin over the next two days.

Cock of the Rock bird

Your drive starts by ascending into the altiplano, a truly rugged and harsh environment. From there, descend into the dense vegetation of the Manu Cloud Forest, an area comprising magnificent waterfalls and steep forested mountains, funneling all the water from the high Andes down into tributaries of the Amazon rainforest below. The dirt road winds its way down from the mountain peaks, passing by small towns where the smartphones have no use and the air remains crisp and clear.  It takes you past rural farms and small coca plantations, the leaves from which make their way into your welcome tea at Cusco’s luxury hotels.

In the late afternoon you’ll arrive to Cock of the Rock Lodge, located just above 5,000 ft and named after Peru’s national bird.  You’re now square in the middle of an immense cloud forest, where water is plentiful and nightly reading is done by candlelight; a far cry from both the desolate grasslands of the Altiplano and the bustle of Cusco.

andes path journey

In the morning it’s time to continue your journey into the Amazon, but not without a visit by local monkeys as you eat breakfast in the open-air dining room, or before spending time at one of the world’s best blinds for viewing the courting antics of the rare Cock of the Rock bird.

As you descend further into the Amazon basin, you’ll feel the temperatures rise and the landscape change.  By noon you arrive to the small town of Atalaya, where it’s time to trade in the car for a wooden canoe with an outboard motor. (Actually, make that two outboard motors, one in the water and one sitting in the front seat, because you never know!) As you push off and start your boat journey down the Alto Madre de Dios, you get to take in the workings of river life.  As the highway of the jungle, the river is the conduit of trade, bringing goods to various towns up and down the river, dotting the shores in places I never dreamed existed.  Whether it’s a boat full of bananas, a lone fisherman, or a family on the banks, the images will stick with you. It’s an utterly different way of life.

andes path journey

Upon your mid-afternoon arrival to your next lodge, you will be greeted by a number of different bird species, including some extremely photogenic hummingbirds.  Most stays here are for one night, just a stopover, but when I was there, one guest had 2 weeks planned, and each day he awoke invigorated and ready to explore.  That’s how you know somebody enjoys their birds!

On Day 3, as the snaking Madre de Dios carries you into the Amazon, it’s hard to imagine that you’re still technically in transit to your final destination: the Manu Wildlife Center. You have now gone from the high Andes into a lush mountainous cloud forest and are now in the lowlands of the Amazon itself, devoid of major topographical contour and with an incredible expanse of rainforest ahead. You’ll pass by the mouth of the Manu River, which is the pathway to Manu National Park, a protected area covering over 6,600 square miles.  After approximately 6 hours of travel, you’ll arrive to the incredible Manu Wildlife Center, basecamp for the next 3 nights.  Fun fact : Manu contains the highest bird, mammal and plant diversity of any national park in the world.

andes path journey

At the Manu Wildlife Center, I would classify the accommodation level as ‘rustic elegance.’ Each private bungalow has a private en suite bathroom, hot showers, and once again you get to read by the light of a candle. The main lodge serves as the dining hall, bar, lounge, conference room, battery charging station, etc.  It’s essentially command center for your stay, and a great place to chat with fellow travelers as they return to share their different wildlife encounters.

Each stay here is unique, but among the possible highlight sightings are the Emperor Tamarin, spider monkeys, tapirs, macaws, toucans, tanagers, parrots, river otters, and many, many more species than can be named here.  And while wildlife viewing is unpredictable (exactly how it should be in nature!), your experience here will be all-encompassing and transformative. For this trip, it truly is about the journey – the destination just happens to be otherworldly as well.

Echoes of Survival: Tracing the Andes Survivors' Journey from 'Society of the Snow' to Today

Retracing the harrowing journey of the andes survivors.

“Society of the Snow” plunges viewers into the chilling true story of the 1972 plane crash that forever changed the lives of forty-five passengers, including a young Uruguayan rugby team. As the film unfolds, it intricately details the daunting survival saga of the sixteen who miraculously lived through the crash, enduring the brutal Andes wilderness.

“ After seventy days, a rescue operation managed to find the sixteen survivors of the crash, and the rescue mission began. ” This quote encapsulates the sheer will and determination of the human spirit, a central theme portrayed in the movie.

The Survivors: Life After the Andes

In the wake of the disaster, each survivor embarked on a unique path, weaving their harrowing experience into the fabric of their lives. Notably, Roberto Canessa turned his ordeal into a life of healing others as a renowned medical professional, while Nando Parrado channeled his survival story into motivational speaking and writing, offering solace and inspiration to many. Carlos Paez Rodriguez turned his focus to a successful career in advertising and public relations, reflecting the diverse trajectories these individuals took post-rescue.

Their stories of resilience and recovery continue to be shared through books, documentaries, and films, with “Society of the Snow” being the latest portrayal. This continued narrative reflects the profound impact the crash had, not just on the survivors but also on the world at large.

A Director’s Vision: Bringing True Stories to Life

J.A. Bayona , the director of “Society of the Snow,” expressed his deep commitment to authenticity and respect in retelling the survivors’ story. His approach involved close collaboration with the survivors and the families of the deceased. He emphasized the importance of this connection, stating, “ We always felt very lucky that we were able to shoot this film with the collaboration of not only the survivors but also the families of the deceased, so I wanted to sit down with them and get as much information as possible. ” This approach ensured the film’s narrative was grounded in reality and truth, offering an honest and respectful depiction of the events.

The Impact of “Society of the Snow” on Its Real-Life Heroes

The film’s release was a moment of high anticipation and anxiety for both the creators and the subjects. Bayona’s decision to premiere the film to the survivors, their families, and the families of the deceased in Uruguay was a bold and respectful gesture. The collective viewing experience, fraught with emotion, culminated in a standing ovation, signaling a positive reception from those most intimately connected to the story.

A Story of Endurance and Memory

“Society of the Snow” is more than a film; it’s a poignant tribute to the indomitable will of individuals faced with unimaginable circumstances. It’s a reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of the human spirit. As the world continues to draw lessons and inspiration from the Andes survivors, the film serves as a powerful medium for keeping their stories alive, ensuring that the legacy of their struggle and triumph continues to inspire and teach future generations about resilience, hope, and the capacity for extraordinary courage .

Kevin Hart's journey from stand-up comedy sets in bowling alleys to global tours

By Anderson Cooper , Aliza Chasan , Nichole Marks, John Gallen

April 21, 2024 / 7:00 PM EDT / CBS News

Kevin Hart, now one of the most successful comics out there, struggled to find places to perform when he first started out as a stand-up comedian, so he picked some very unexpected venues.

The 44-year-old entertainer took gigs wherever he could get them: bowling alleys, cabarets and strip clubs. He doesn't "know who thought that comedy and strippers mix," but a strip club performance led to one of the most heartbreaking moments of his career on stage. Hart remembers hearing a woman say, "Oh, baby" during his set.

"[She was] so disgusted and heartbroken that this is what I chose to do with my life," Hart said.

But things turned around for him. Hart is the highest-grossing comedian today. His last comedy tour made grossed more than $122 million and, last month, he was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor — as close to a lifetime achievement award as you can get.

Becoming a comedian

Hart has always been confident, friends said. Comedian Na'im Lynn, who's known Hart since Kevin was a teenager, didn't get it at first.

"I mean, it was perplexing in the beginning," Lynn said. "Like, 'Why does this little ugly dude have this much confidence?'"

Hart grew up in a rough neighborhood in North Philadelphia. Home movies made by his mom, Nancy Hart, show he was always the family entertainer. Hart lived in a in a one-bedroom apartment with his brother and mom, who kept a close eye on him.

Kevin Hart

She planned every moment of his day, making sure he went to swim practice and did his school work, even quizzing him to make sure he didn't rush through his assignments. Hart credits her with his drive.

Nancy Hart also kept Hart's dad, Henry Witherspoon, at a distance. Witherspoon was in and out of prison. He was addicted to drugs, which Hart talked about in a 2011 stand-up special called "Laugh at my Pain." Hart describes his dad showing up at spelling bees and debates and treating them as if they were athletic events.

"First of all, you can't cheer for no kid at a spelling bee. It's a spelling bee. It's quiet, I'm focused. I'm in the middle of spelling a very difficult word," Hart said during the special. "My dad shows up late. Busts through the back door high as hell making cokehead noises, alright. Once again, I cannot make this up. Aright, this is all I heard. I'm in the middle of spelling some s–t. Out of nowhere all I heard was: 'Alright, alright, alright. Yeah!'"

The details are heartbreaking, but Hart finds the humor in it.

"I see it for what it was," he said. "But as a kid, that's dad."

Hart's path to success

For a long time, Hart struggled to make it big.

Hart had to contend with the sound of pins being knocked over during his early performances at bowling alleys. He would start jokes over if someone bowled a strike while he was telling a punchline.

Having a strong drive is a huge portion of making it as a comic, Hart said. Comedians who can't get gigs on actual stages need to create their own wherever they can perform.

"It's one of the most hustled entities that exists today," Hart said.

  • Kevin Hart's daughter on her dad's embarrassing jokes

He thought he'd made it when he shot a sitcom for ABC called "The Big House" in 2003. The network flew him out to what's known as the Upfronts to present the show to advertisers and the media. As he waited backstage, the "guy with the microphone" who was directing everyone told Hart his show wasn't being picked up. No one from the network told him — just "a guy named Barry in the back, holding the curtain."

That rejection pushed Hart. He didn't want his career determined by people he didn't know.

"I might be sitting here all day if I don't go grab it and I don't go make what I feel should be mine," Hart said.

Kevin Hart and Anderson Cooper

And that's what he did. He started a small production company, now called Hartbeat, and began developing his own stand-up specials. Hart also marketed himself relentlessly through social media — and Hollywood studios took notice, hiring him for a slew of movies.

From highpoint to controversy

When Hart was picked in 2018 to host the Oscars , it seemed like a highpoint in his career.

"I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time. ... To be able to join the legendary list of host[s] that have graced this stage is unbelievable," Hart wrote on his Instagram at the time. "I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now."

But then comments he made about LGBTQ+ individuals years earlier onstage and on Twitter caused controversy.

Hart stepped down as the Oscars host. He initially didn't apologize for his comments, but then posted an apology the next day on Twitter.

Hart said he spoke with comedian Wanda Sykes and said she explained to him that there were people hurting because of comments like the ones he'd made.

"It was presented to me in a way where I couldn't ignore that," Hart said. "So in those moments of despair, great understanding and education can come out of it if you're given the opportunity."

Bouncing back and developing material for an upcoming tour

Hart has since bounced back. He seems to be constantly in motion, starting with a daily pre-dawn workout. Hart owns a nutrition supplement company. He's also got a fast-food chain, a tequila brand and a $100 million venture capital fund. His entertainment company, Hartbeat, is now worth more than $650 million.

"I'm no longer just the comedian. I'm an investment. I'm a studio," Hart said. "I'm a partner looking for partnerships. Work for hire is not in my best interest if it's a one and done situation."

Kevin Hart and Anderson Cooper work out

He's also working on new material for an upcoming comedy tour called "Acting My Age." He doesn't work with his team in a room to develop his ideas; Hart takes them to small comedy clubs to try them out. Friends and collaborators Harry Ratchford and Joey Wells act as his writing consultants.

Hart doesn't write down his material, instead sticking to bullet points on his phone. He said he wants to make sure the story he's telling is understandable and focused on relationships, friends and aging.

"All things that, no matter where you are and who you are, you can go, 'Aha,'" Hart said.

60 Minutes correspondent Anderson Cooper watched Kevin Hart work out his notes on stage in front of 3,000 people in Pasadena, California. Everyone had to hand over their phones so the material wouldn't leak.

"Like 90% of what I'm going to do tonight I feel like is really good," Hart explained to the audience. "The reason why I took your phones is because of the other 10%. Right? Like just in case. Just in case some of it's not, you don't have no proof."

Wells and Ratchford took notes as Hart performed. Ratchford focuses on structure, where jokes should go in the set, Wells said. Wells focuses on how to make Hart's set just a little bit funnier.

"He might get a standing ovation. I'd go 'That was great. That was great. What if you tried this?'" Wells said.

Hart's sets include embarrassingly revealing stories about his wife and four kids, his insecurities and his many shortcomings.

"It's talking about the things that you aren't afraid to laugh at about yourself," Hart said. "I'm really confident that the laugh that I'm getting, you're not laughing necessarily at me, as if I'm a joke. You're laughing at the experience."

Army Veteran and Environmental Advocate: A Sustainability Science Student’s Journey to Columbia

Rowen Carrick

Columbia Climate School

Olivia Colton was always interested in the natural sciences. But before starting the Master of Science in Sustainability Science (SUSCI) program, she was an active-duty officer in the U.S. Army stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, and Monterey, California, where she served as a platoon leader and executive officer.

Paging through a military magazine in a waiting room one day, Colton came across an article referencing low veteran enrollment at Ivy League universities—a detail that stayed in the back of her mind. A few months later, when she was completing her military service and looking for sustainability master’s programs, Colton felt encouraged to apply to Columbia’s SUSCI program.

Carrying her leadership skills into her new environment, Colton has been involved with student life in the Academic Affairs Office for the Sustainability Graduate Programs, the Sustainability Science program as an Earth Institute Fellow, and as a School of Professional Studies student government representative at Columbia. Last summer, she also worked at the Tree Ring Lab at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory , where she helped catalog nearly 2,000 cross-section tree samples from field studies across the globe.

After graduating, Colton plans to pursue a research career in environmental conservation. In the Q&A below, she reflects on the SUSCI program’s interdisciplinary coursework, and how her time in the military and at Columbia has prepared her to work on a range of sustainability initiatives.

Your undergraduate degree is in conservation biology. What first sparked your interest in natural sciences?

I guess I have never given it that much thought; it’s just always been part of who I am. For as long as I can remember, birthdays were spent at the zoo, and family vacations involved a lot of hiking. I think it probably comes from the feeling of wonder I experience when I’m in nature! Our world doesn’t have magic or anything like that, but nature often feels like the closest thing to it.

What did your research at the Tree Ring Lab focus on? What were some challenges you experienced?

Last summer, I analyzed field samples from across the globe, all destined for meticulous cataloging and organization. There are thousands of unsorted samples in the Tree Ring Lab from six continents, so most days in the lab were consumed by intricate comparisons and cross-referencing to ensure that each sample was accurately labeled and sorted.

The work also included sorting the metadata for each of those samples via System for Earth Sample Registration and using that to allocate each one to a unique identifier known as an International Generic Sample Number .

As for challenges, on my last day in the lab, we opened up a box of untranslated samples collected in Egypt in the 1980s. We had sorted more than a thousand samples by this point, and this was the first group of untranslated samples that we came across. As luck would have it, my seven semesters of Arabic from my undergraduate days proved to be a lifesaver. Unfortunately, I haven’t used it much in the last five years, and Egyptian Arabic is notoriously unique, so it took me several hours to translate and decipher. It certainly added a thrilling finale to my summer in the lab.

Could you elaborate on your experience of joining the Army after your undergraduate degree, and what compelled you to continue your education after leaving the Army?

I was a member of the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps during my undergraduate study. They gave me a full-ride scholarship, and then after graduation, I owed them [at least] four years of service. I started active duty about a week after graduation from Louisiana State University and actually completed it during my first semester here!

I knew I eventually wanted to pursue a master’s degree, but I had at least four years of service before I would reach that point. As I was preparing to end my time in service, I knew that if I did not go back to school right then, there was a much lower chance that I ever would. Leaving the military was a big transition, and bundling it with a big move, but starting school felt more manageable, somehow.

How did you find out about the SUSCI program, and what inspired you to apply?

I have a distinct memory of picking up a military magazine in a waiting room and reading an article about a veteran who went to Yale. The article mentioned the low veteran enrollment at Ivy League universities (although Columbia has more than the other Ivy Leagues combined). I found it interesting but did not think it would ever really apply to me.

Fast-forward a few months; I came across Columbia when I was googling schools with master’s programs in sustainability. I kept a handwritten list of schools I was interested in and their locations. I still have that notebook somewhere, and I’m pretty sure I have Columbia circled with “LOL” because I thought there was no chance I would get in… but here I am!

You’re very involved with student life. What positions do you hold, and what have you learned from the experience?

I am currently the Sustainability Science representative for student government and serve on our social committee. I am also a member of Columbia MilVets . My biggest takeaway from it is the importance of being involved. These events are happening because people want to see YOU there!

As an intern for the Academic Affairs Office, what does it mean for you to engage with prospective applicants to the SUSCI program?

It’s a lot of fun! These days, I have classes with students who I reached out to and answered questions for as they applied, and then sent packages to them when they were accepted. It’s fun to see their full progression! I feel like I contributed to their journey, even just a little.

Having so many unique positions at Columbia simultaneously is not an easy feat. How do you balance your time?

That is a great question, and unfortunately, I’m not sure I really have an answer. Having prior stressful job experiences definitely helps. I guess this goes along with my passion for the natural world, but I just find very little joy in sitting at home. While not exactly an environmental haven, that’s part of the reason I love NYC so much—there’s always something to do!

Do you have any advice you’d like to share with current or prospective students?

My main piece of advice would be to get involved! If you’re not involved on campus, there is still so much you can do in our city! If you’re going to make this much of an investment for tuition and rent, you need to get the most out of it. My second would be to make sure you take classes you’re interested in and explore options outside of our department. I wish I had shopped around a little more during my first semester!

The  Master of Science in Sustainability Science  program, offered by the School of Professional Studies in partnership with the Climate School, is designed for current and aspiring leaders who wish to help organizations understand the technical aspects of sustainability, including predicting and addressing environmental impacts.
