13. Camp Mack, a Guy Harvey Lodge, Marina, and RV Resort

Lake Wales, FL

Camp Mack is a rustic setting located on the famous Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, approximately an hour from Orlando and all of the attractions that Orlando has to offer (Disney World, Sea World, and more).

I’ve spent a fair share of my time here for large bass tournaments, and the setup for fishing is perfect.   Camp Mack is one of the best bass fishing lodges in the U.S., offering great ramps and easy access to some of the best bass fishing in the state of Florida.   5 limit catches routinely hit the 20-30 pound mark, with many trophy catches coming off of the chain of lakes, which make up about 21,000 acres of prime bass fishing.

Accommodations include a lodge with special parking for trucks and boat trailers, as well as RV setups and private cabins.

Gator Mack’s Sports Bar serves up great food, and frequently hosts live bands fit for old Florida ambiance. There’s also a small convenience-style store on site for snacks, drinks, and tackle needs.

Boat rentals (pontoon and kayak) are available, airboat rides, and professional bass guides to put you on the fish fast.

Camp Mack also boasts plenty of other family-friendly features, including an outdoor kids’ area, pool, and bike rentals.

Mat punching with big braid is common here and almost a rite of passage. Try 65-pound braid for snatching the big ones. (Amazon)

 14. Mac’s Point Lodge and Marina (formerly Wingates Lodge)

Bainbridge, Georgia

Lake Seminole is an enormous and productive fishery split by the state line of Florida and Georgia. The lake is an outstanding place to fish on vacations as it offers a ton of diversity as a result of three rivers that merge together to empty into the main lake basin. Each segment of this great body of water fishes a bit differently than the others making it a rewarding challenge that can be fished with many different strategies.

I’ve spent a good amount of time on Lake Seminole for bass tournaments and practice and am familiar with Mac’s Point. It’s a great setup for fishing the lake and is well situated in the middle of the lake for easy access.

Mac’s Point includes a great restaurant, ample ramp and parking space, and a convenience store for food, drink, and tackle needs that may come up during your stay. The setting is rustic, and the location is remote — perfect to escape the hectic pace of life.

Accommodations include plenty of campsites and cabins.

Most notable is the history behind the lodge. According to Bassmaster ,

“Lunker Lodge was also the site of one of the most important meetings in the sport’s history when Wingate and Scott helped convince a former Georgia governor and the local manager of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that Lake Seminole should be the site of B.A.S.S.’ first tournament. Visitors to Lunker Lodge can stand in the room where the meeting took place and eat one of the restaurant’s rightfully famous hamburgers.”

Grab this before heading to Seminole. It wins a ton of tourneys there n the grass. Check it out on Amazon.

15. Black’s Camp and Restaurant

Cross, South Carolina

Black’s Camp is located on the beautiful shores of the Santee Cooper Lake system, providing visiting anglers the opportunity to spend time in a full-service atmosphere with ample bass fishing and top-notch amenities, including:

  • Restaurant with Sunday afternoon buffet
  • Fuel station on site
  • Motel rooms, efficiency apartments, mobile homes, and campground
  • Convenience store with food, snacks, tackle, and more.
  • Fish Cleaning Service

Bass fishing on Santee Cooper is exceptional and draws anglers from across the country, including major professional bass circuit events like Fishing League Worldwide and Bassmaster Elite events.

Whippoorwill Sportsmanʹs Lodge – Quincy, Florida

Although it couldn’t include the Whippoorwill in our official list because it’s missing dining options and boat rentals or guide service, the Lodge has a rich history of recreational and tournament bass fishing and deserves mention.

Lake Talquin is approximately 8,800 acres and offers anglers a mix of shoreline bass fishing and offshore and ledge fishing opportunities.

Affectionately known as “the Whip,” the Whippoorwill Sportsman’s Lodge is located about 37 minutes West of Tallahassee, Florida’s state capitol.

I’ve been a part of fishing tournaments at the Whip and can attest to the unique country charm of the facilities run by some great people.

Lodging is lakefront and includes convenient cabins, cottages, and RV sites. Although there is no on-site restaurant, there is a small store with various food, drink, snack options, bait, and tackle.

It’s hard to go wrong when you embark on a vacation centered around bass fishing. Combining awesome bodies of water with incredible accommodations, food, boat rentals, and guide service, and you’ve got a winner of a trip planned.

As the old adage goes, “A bad day of fishing is better than the best day at work.”

However, a bad day of fishing will be the last thing on your mind. Visit one of our top 15 bass fishing vacation locations, and you’ll have a great stay full of amazing memories.

The Ultimate Southern Bass Fishing Trip

The Ultimate Southern Bass Fishing Trip

The only thing better than a road trip to a legendary big-bass lake to enjoy the lake's finest offerings would be a much larger road trip with stops at a bunch of great bass lakes. With such thoughts in mind, we've selected top bass fishing destinations from all over the South. Read on and then get that calendar handy so you can start planning!

1. LAKE GUNTERSVILLE Alabama

Forage-rich, expansive grass flats front the channel of the Tennessee River, making 69,000-acre Lake Guntersville a largemouth factory that yields tremendous fishing year after year, despite the pressure that naturally comes from its fame. The Big G is fairly fertile and highly diverse, creating plentiful fishing opportunities.

Claim To Fame: Legendary for summer/fall frog fishing and for the giant largemouth bags it regularly yields through the cool months, Lake Guntersville stands as a favorite stop for many touring pros. It's also where Paul Elias introduced the Alabama Rig to the bass fishing world during an FLW Tour event in 2011.

Tips: Early in the year, throw a lipless crankbait over remnant submerged grass or work an umbrella rig near steep, rocky banks and creek mouths. Once the grass mats develop, the vegetation dictates much about the bite, and it is time to break out your flippin' stick and frog rod.

Facilities: Access to this big lake, lodging and good food are plentiful, especially around the towns of Guntersville and Scottsboro, and from Lake Guntersville State Park. Alabama Mountain Lakes ( northalabama.org ) is a good source of planning information.

2. LAKE MILLWOOD Arkansas

Four rivers feed 30,000-acre Lake Millwood, which is tremendously fertile, thick with timber and vegetation, and, not surprisingly, loaded with chunky largemouth bass.

Video That May Interest You

Claim To Fame: This southwest Arkansas lake is known both as a dependable producer of a high-quality bass and as a place where you might catch an absolute giant. Between its timber-lined channels, the oxbows off its rivers, and the open water in the lower end of the lake, Millwood is known as a lake that offers outstanding variety.

Tips: When everything is right, Millwood fishes like it appears it should — like a giant farm pond. Because so much of the lake offers quality bass habitat, though, patterning is critical. Knowing bass are using trees often isn't enough. You have to figure out that they are on, say, vertical trees of a certain size that are close to bends in the main river channel.

Facilities: Millwood State Park offers a full-service marina and more than 100 campsites. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recreation areas provide additional access in numerous areas.

Recommended

3. LAKE ISTOKPOGA Florida

Sometimes overlooked for the Kissimmee Chain to the north or for Lake Okeechobee to the South, 28,000-acre Lake Istokpoga is nevertheless one of the finest trophy bass lakes in the Sunshine State, and the fishery is currently in excellent condition.

Claim To Fame: Just in the past three years, this big, shallow lake has yielded 237 TrophyCatch bass. To qualify for this program, bass must weigh at least 8 pounds. They also must be released, and so those fish were all put back in the lake! In addition, this lake's normal largemouth catch-rate is among the highest in Florida.

Tips: Soft plastics produce well in this classic Florida lake. Fish traditional Texas-rigged worms early and late in the day and punch the thick vegetation, which creates a lot of shade, through the middle of the day. Also, keep a topwater lure or soft-plastic jerkbait handy when you fish Istokpoga, and watch for bass running shad.

Facilities: Several fish camps and four public ramps provide good access to Lake Istokpoga. The Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce (863-385-8448) is a good source of area information.

Largemouth Bass Fishing Trip

4. LAKE HARTWELL Georgia, South Carolina

An impoundment of the Savannah River, 56,000-acre Lake Hartwell offers a relatively new, high-quality spotted bass fishery and an excellent largemouth population. The lake is also exceptionally diverse in its habitat offerings and has a great forage base that includes blueback herring, threadfin and gizzard shad, bluegills and crawfish.

Claim To Fame: Hartwell has long been a favorite lake of local anglers and a popular tournament venue because of its diversity and the quality of its bass, but it has gained national notice in recent years as a popular tour stop for professional fishing organizations, and one that typically produces well for the pros.

Tips: Most of Hartwell is clear enough to offer outstanding sight-fishing during the spring. Once bass move off the beds, blueback herring dictate much about the fish's behavior. From late spring through fall, keep a big walking topwater lure tied at all times, and don't hesitate to throw it in the middle of the day.

Facilities: Between Corps of Engineers recreation areas, state and county parks and private marinas, access to all parts of Lake Hartwell is outstanding.

5. TOLEDO BEND Louisiana, Texas

A huge impoundment along the Texas/Louisiana border, Toledo Bend spreads across more than 181,000 acres. It has a complex shoreline and outstanding structure, with countless creeks and points and endless bass habitat that ranges from shallow, grass flats to open-water channel drops and humps. It is one of the nation's most legendary bass destinations and has been producing excellent fishing for decades.

Claim To Fame: Toledo Bend has taken top billing on Bassmaster Magazine's Top 100 Bass Lakes for the past two years because of its overall excellence and tremendous trophy potential. Toledo sealed that ranking with 139 certified 10-pound-plus bass in 12 months and insane numbers of 30-pound-plus tournament limits.

Tips: Shallow-running square-billed crankbaits and spinnerbaits offer very good prospects during the spring, when the fish are around shallow cover. Also fish red lipless crankbaits over submerged grass early in the spring, and flip shallow cover any time spring rains and consequential stain push bass deep into the cover.

Facilities: More than 70 boat access points, including parks, marinas, resorts and simple launch ramps, provide good access to all parts of Toledo Bend.

6. PICKWICK LAKE

Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee

An impoundment of the Tennessee River that covers 47,500 acres, Pickwick Lake offers flippin' and frog fishing like Guntersville and ledge fishing like Kentucky Lake, but gets less acclaim than either.

Claim To Fame: Pickwick has long been famous for its thick-bodied smallmouths, and many tournaments over the years have been won with brown fish bags weighing in the mid-20s. However, the largemouth fishing is even better than the smallmouth fishing, with good overall quality and double-digit-weight fish caught every year. A few years back, a 16 1/2-pounder was caught and released in Pickwick's lower end.

Tips: During the spring, drift the Wilson Dam tailwater with swimbaits for smallmouths or flip bushes in the backwaters for largemouths. As the season progresses, follow the fish out to the Tennessee River channel and fish ledges and humps. When the bass are on the river, water flow, color and level dictate how to fish.

Facilities: The best access to Pickwick is around Muscle Shoals and Florence, Ala., in the upper half of the lake, from J.P. Coleman State Park in Mississippi and in the Pickwick Dam area in Tennessee.

7. LAKE OF THE OZARKS MISSOURI

An impoundment of the Osage River that is also fed by three other rivers, Lake of the Ozarks impounds 52,000 acres. Its shoreline is complex, with countless points and coves, and thousands of docks line its shores.

Claim To Fame: Incredible consistency is the hallmark of Lake of the Ozarks. In part due to steady water levels, this lake almost never suffers from a poor year-class, and endless docks provide cover for young bass. What that means to fishermen is that bass numbers remain excellent year after year, and that size distribution tends to be really good.

Tips: Pay attention to the wind and focus on banks that the wind hits directly. These banks typically hold more forage, and the fish feed more aggressively. Because Lake of the Ozarks has so many docks, some kind of "dock pattern" is always happening. Think about which banks would be best without the docks to help you decide where to fish, and then try to find the most productive docks on those banks.

Facilities: Nine public boat ramps and several marinas provide boating access to all parts of Lake of the Ozarks.

8. FALLS OF THE NEUSE NORTH CAROLINA

Covering only 12,000 acres and never the site of major national tournaments, Falls of the Neuse Lake doesn't have a big national reputation. Locals know, though, that this impoundment of the Neuse River supports a fabulous population of hefty largemouths, including some legitimate trophy fish.

Claim To Fame: Falls Lake produces double-digit-weight bass every spring. Just as important, this forage-rich lake yields a tremendous number of bass in the 3- to 6-pound range. With a shallow-stumpy upper end and a deeper, rocky lower end, it also offers great variety to bass fishermen.

Tips: Early in the year, cast a jig or a white spinnerbait around super-shallow cover (of which there is an abundance) and keep moving. As spring progresses, focus on spawning pockets, looking for fish if the water is clear and the skies are sufficiently sunny and calm. After the spawn, most bass move away from the banks and relate more to points and channel breaks.

Facilities: Falls Lake is undeveloped, but Falls Lake State Recreation Area includes seven access areas that provide boat ramps and several opportunities for lakeside camping.

9. LAKE OF THE ARBUCKLES OKLAHOMA

Although fairly small at 2,300 acres, Lake of the Arbuckles offers huge trophy bass potential. Florida-strain largemouths, which enjoy good deep and shallow habitat and find plenty to eat, are the main attraction in this Southcentral Oklahoma lake, but smallmouths also grow large and provide a fun bonus.

Claim To Fame: Locals had been quietly watching Florida-strain bass mature in Lake of the Arbuckles for several years, but word spread much farther after a couple of tournaments in 2013 that yielded 40-pound-plus winning bags. The lake-record weighed 14 1/2 pounds, only 5 ounces shy of the Oklahoma state-record largemouth.

Tips: The best bite occurs early in the spring or even on mild late-winter days. Suspending jerkbaits and jigs fished slowly offer good prospects for big pre-spawn bass. After the fish spawn, they move deep in this clear lake, and in part due to very heavy pressure, they can become tough customers.

Facilities: Lake of the Arbuckles is located within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Four boat ramps provide access to different parts of the lake, and three of the four have campgrounds nearby.

Small Mouth Bass Fishing Trip

10. KENTUCKY LAKE K entucky, Tennessee

A huge reservoir, which covers more than 160,000 acres and impounds 184 miles of the Tennessee River, Kentucky Lake offers many kinds of fishing as well as high-quality opportunities for catching largemouths, smallmouths and spots.

Claim To Fame: Kentucky Lake is the ledge-fishing capital of the fishing world, and people travel there from all over the country every summer to throw big crankbaits and spoons or drag jigs over main river drops. Several excellent year-classes in the current largemouth population create a big population with an outstanding size distribution.

Tips: During the spring, when bass are spawning and feeding shallow, flippin' flooded bushes in bays will produce big catches. Once summer arrives, move to the main channel and use electronics to find groups of fish relating to structures that are adjacent to the main channel and that provide depth changes and current breaks.

Facilities: Some riverine stretches are pretty remote, but access is good in many areas, including Camden and Paris, Tenn., several points within Land Between the Lakes, and near the dam.

11. SANTEE COOPER SOUTH CAROLINA

Although actually two distinct reservoirs, lakes Marion and Moultrie are normally viewed collectively as the Santee Cooper lakes or simply as Santee Cooper. Collectively, Santee Cooper encompasses more than 171,000 acres, with vast grassy backwaters and extensive timber. Excellent habitat and plentiful forage that includes multiple shad and herring species support a tremendous bass fishery.

Claim To Fame: Santee Cooper actually is most famous as the original home of landlocked striped bass and as a factory for giant catfish, but tournament bass anglers know that if you fish there during the spring you'll need at least 25 pounds to even think about being competitive, and you might need far more.

Tips: Everything looks "bassy" at Santee Cooper, so it's important to find current, inundated ponds, ditches and other features that set apart the best spots and to pattern which trees or types of grass the bass are using any given day. Fish the grass with a plastic worm or bump the trees with a crankbait.

Facilities: Santee Cooper is a true fishing destination with plentiful fish camps that offer launch ramps, food, lodging and more, and several public ramps add access. Santee Cooper Country ( santeecoopercountry.org ) is an excellent resource.

12. LAKE CHICKAMAUGA TENNESSEE

Multiple factors, including regular Florida bass stockings since 2000, special regulations, and outstanding habitat and forage have helped 36,000-acre Chickamauga to develop into one of the nation's elite trophy largemouth destinations.

Claim To Fame: Chickamauga has yielded many teen-weight bass in recent years, including a state-record largemouth, which weighed 15 pounds, 3 ounces and was caught in 2014. This lake also has rewritten many tournament record books and yielded crazy numbers of 30-pound-plus tournament catches, including a few that approached 45 pounds! Rogne Brown and Tim Carini earned national attention in 2014 with a 49-pound, five-fish limit.

Tips: Early in the year, it's tough to top an umbrella rig (three-hook limit). Once the water returns to full pool from winter drawdown, the bass move into bays and creek arms and the spawn dictates everything about their locations and behavior. Later in the year, as the grass forms mats on the surface, frog fishing and flippin' move to the forefront.

Facilities: Forty boat ramps, including several that are part of marinas with full angler services, offer excellent access to all parts of Chickamauga. Dayton offers a good base camp area with good facilities and is convenient to excellent bass fishing.

13. LAKE FORK TEXAS

Fed by streams that drain fertile farmland, loaded with timber and diverse vegetation, offering great deep and shallow habitat, and managed for trophy largemouths since the time it was built, 27,264-acre Lake Fork could be considered the ultimate trophy largemouth lake.

Claim To Fame: Thirty-two of the 50 biggest bass ever weighed in Texas, including No. 1, and 7 of the Top 10, put Lake Fork in a class of its own. Since 2010, Lake Fork also has yielded 14 ShareLunker fish, which must weigh more than 13 pounds.

Tips: Many ponds, which were stocked before Lake Fork was filled in order to kick-start the fish population, remain as hidden gems for Lake Fork bass. Extensive timber, most of which is broken off at the normal water line, produces some of Fork's best fishing. If the fish don't bite, though, don't be shy about shifting gears. These bass can be tough customers, but the lake's diverse habitat provides many options.

Facilities: More than 20 boat ramps, some of them part of marinas that offer lodging and other services, provide plentiful access to Lake Fork

14. BUGGS ISLAND V irginia, North Carolina

Plentiful forage and a tremendous amount of cover that gets flooded when the lake is full, help 49,000-acre Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island) support very high numbers of bass and very good average size year after year.

Claim To Fame: Buggs is best known for its bushes, which get flooded every spring and after big rains at other times and which offer outstanding flippin' and pitchin' targets. While bass rarely reach true trophy proportions in this lake, most fish are fat and healthy, and bass in the 2- to 5-pound range are very plentiful.

Tips: If the bushes are flooded, a flippin' stick and a jig or a Texas-rigged creature bait will be your best friends. Also keep at least one rod rigged with a square-billed crankbait or a spinnerbait to draw reaction strikes from fish in the bushes. When water is lower, structural features such as points, humps and turns in creek and river channels become much more important.

Facilities: More than 30 boat ramps provide good access to most of Buggs Island. Clarksville Virginia, which is near the lake's midpoint, offers good options for lodging and other angler needs.

15. NEW RIVER West Virginia, North Carolina

Most famous for rapids and towering canyon walls through New River Gorge, the New begins as a high-elevation creek best suited for wading and grows into a powerful river as it flows northward through three states. The greatest common denominator throughout the New River's run is excellent smallmouth bass fishing.

Claim To Fame: The lower half of the Virginia portion and the entire West Virginia run produces a better caliber of smallmouth bass than do most Appalachian streams, including some genuine giants. New River veterans know that any given bite could turn out to be a 5- or 6-pound smallmouth bass.

Tips: Watch water levels. Low flows serve up the steadiest action. High flows can slow the bite and make navigation challenging, but they also yield some seriously big bass. Best bets from mid-spring until well into the fall are topwater lures, crawfish-imitating crankbaits and various soft-plastic offerings.

Facilities: New River Gorge National River borders 53 miles of river in West Virginia and provides many access points. New River Outdoor Company (newriveroutdoorco.com) in Virginia and Adventures on the Gorge (adventuresonthegorge.com) in West Virginia offer guided fishing, lodging and much more.

Wade into the water with Greg for an exciting fly-fishing adventure on some beautiful Texas rivers! On this 4 to 8-hour fly-fishing trip, Greg will take you on a Walk & Wade trip out on the Brazos River or a smaller tributary such as the Paluxy River. Here, he'll give you some of his expert fly fishing tips as you target several fish species including Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Striped Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass, White Bass, and a variety of the Sunfish species. There is even Carp, Smallmouth Buffalo, Freshwater Drum and Gar. No matter your experience level, from beginners to experienced, Greg is passionate about making your day on the water one to remember. Whether it’s wading the scenic Brazos River or wading the “hill country like” Paluxy River, Greg will guide you to a Texas sized, fun filled, fly fishing trip of a lifetime! Greg will provide flies, leaders & tippet, fly rods & reels (available by request, please make arrangements prior to your trip), drinks, snacks and will even do some expert photography to leave you with some pictures! Lunches will be provided on the full day trips as well. All you need to bring is a valid Texas freshwater fishing license, breathable waders, and we recommend polarized sun glasses, a hat, rain gear & clothing for the season and sunscreen. You are welcome to bring our own fly rod and reel. He recommends a 4-6 weight Fly Rod for wade trips on smaller waters such as the Paluxy River. However, on the Brazos River he prefers a 6-8 weight Fly Rod. Big flies allow opportunities to catch some bigger fish but require a heavier fly line. Big fish are also easier to control and land on a 6-8 weight fly rod. In terms of lines, he recommends floating, weight forward and shorter taper fly lines. On the Brazos River, there are times when an intermediate sink, or sink tip and full sinking lines are best. Enjoy your day on the water and catch some fish with Greg! Read More

For a lot of Texans, the Brazos river might evoke notions of urban, domesticated, and overcrowded water. Which for a lot of stretches on this river, might be true... But JD specializes in fishing a stretch of the Brazos that is all but inaccessible to the daily fishermen and remains a safe haven of sublime water & wildlife, beautiful cut-banks, and Giant Largemouth Bass! JD has 4 private access points along the 20 mile stretch from PK Lake down to Farm to Market #4, that otherwise would take multiple days to float your way through. Instead JD invites you to come fish with him for half day 4 hour or full day 8 hour trip targeting that same incredible water in half the time! JD will be rowing you down the river in his customized NRS Star fishing raft. Which provides a comfortable ride for 2 guests. Additional guests will be on a separate boat with another guide, but ya'll will stick together, and can mix and match who fishes with who as you drift along. Whilst floating through the slow pools as you move down the river you'll be hammering the banks with poppers looking to excite some big fish for some topwater action. But when a run or deep pool looks particularly tasty, JD will tie the boat up on the bank so ya'll can get out and hone in on the best water and the biggest fish! The raft will be loaded up with all the necessary gear, water, and ice you'll need for the day and JD recommends bringing your favorite snacks, drinks, or even a light lunch, but the only thing you need to bring with you is a Texas freshwater fishing license, so don't forget that! Client Testimonials

James, I can't thank you enough for the wonderful trip I had last Thursday! I learned more from you in 5 hrs than I've learned in almost 40 yrs of fishing. Up until catching that monster, I had caught less than 10 bass total and none over 2 lbs. Catching that monster (10.20 lbs) was the highlight of my life! I still have to pinch myself to be sure it was real, but then again, I'll have the mount from Lake Fork Taxidermy to prove it.

You are a true gentlemen and a bona fide expert in the art of bass fishing. I WILL BE BACK. For the masses out there, I can't recommend this man enough. If you come, you will catch fish!

Why Go Bass Fishing in Mexico?

Mexico is an excellent bass fishing destination. There are a number of reasons for this.

First, the country offers an unmatched diversity of bass species. You’ll find trophy-sized largemouth in Mexico’s lakes such as Lake El Salto and Lake Baccarac. There are also a number of species of seabass that can be caught off Mexico’s shores.

The favorable climate of Mexico also allows for year-round bass fishing. If you want to escape the cold and go bass fishing during the winter, you can. The warm waters also allow bass to grow larger and faster than they can in colder climates. There are some huge bass here.

Bass fishing trips in Mexico often offer more bang for your buck. With a range of budget-friendly accommodations and inclusive packages available, anglers can enjoy a premium experience without breaking the bank.

The competition is also pretty low. Most locals don’t go bass fishing. Most of the bass fishing lakes are also located in unpopulated areas. You won’t have to fight for a fighting spot.

Mexico also isn’t just about bass fishing. It’s a great all around vacation destination. Between fishing sessions, you can enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, explore historical landmarks, and immerse yourself in local culture.

Mexico is also a naturally beautiful palace. Mexico’s bass fishing locations are often nestled amidst untouched nature

Types of Bass Found in Mexico

Both freshwater and saltwater species of bass can be found in Mexico including:

  • Largemouth Bass: One of the most iconic freshwater gamefish, the largemouth bass is known for its distinct appearance characterized by a broad mouth that extends past the rear edge of the eye. Averaging between 10 to 20 inches in length, these bass can often grow much larger with some reaching trophy sizes of well over 10 pounds. In Mexico, the most popular places to fish for largemouth bass include Lake El Salto and Lake Baccarac. These bass are the most popular target for anglers visiting Mexico. They are known for their aggressive strikes and aerial acrobatics. Largemouth bass are also known as bigmouth bass, widemouth bass, bucketmouth, black bass, and Florida bass. They’re all the same species.
  • Smallmouth Bass: Often considered the spirited cousin of the largemouth, the smallmouth bass sports a bronze hue, dark vertical stripes, and a mouth that doesn’t extend beyond its eye. Typically ranging from 12 to 20 inches and weighing up to 7 pounds, they offer a challenging fight, often compared to the strength of much larger fish. In Mexico, they can be found in cooler, rockier waters, especially in the northern regions where rivers and streams provide an ideal habitat. Smallmouth bass are much less common in Mexico than largemouth. Most smallmouth bass in Mexico are found in private fisheries, where you need to pay a fee to fish. You’ll find better smallmouth fishing in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Spotted Bass: The spotted bass, or “Kentucky bass”, exhibits a greenish hue with a series of spots forming horizontal rows down its sides. While their average size hovers around the 10 to 17 inches, they are known for their spirited fight.
  • White Sea Bass: Venturing into the marine spectrum, the white sea bass is a silvery, elongated fish with a dark iridescent blue-gray back. These fish have an average size of around 3 feet and weigh around 20 pounds. These giants can grow up to 5 feet long and weigh over 90 pounds. Found primarily along the Pacific coast of Mexico, they’re a treat for deep-sea anglers, especially around Baja California where the marine biodiversity is rich.
  • Barred Sand Bass: The barred sand bass sports vertical dark bars along its whitish to grayish body. Their stout build is accompanied by an average length of 12 to 20 inches and a weight of 3-4 pounds. These bass are actually considered a type of Grouper. They are usually found near reefs and rocky outcroppings off the coastlines of Mexico. Particularly around the Baja Peninsula. These are great eating fish. They are also fun to catch. They put up a good fight for their small size.
  • Giant Sea Bass: As the name suggests, the giant sea bass is a behemoth. Characterized by its dark black-blotched gray to brownish body, this colossus can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh up to a staggering 700 pounds. Their size makes them a bucket-list catch for many deep-sea anglers. They’re primarily found in the Pacific waters, especially around the Baja California region of Mexico. These bass are also known as Gigas. This comes from their scientific name, Stereolepis Gigas.

Anglers from the U.S. often embark on their journey from the town of Del Rio. You can also cross into Mexico at Lake Amistad dam and launch from Mexico.

Further south, near Zapata, Texas, and the Mexican town of Nueva Guerrero, lies the renowned Falcon Reservoir. Established by the Falcon Dam on the Rio Grande, it has built a reputation as one of the best lakes to catch big bass. Its waters, rich with structure and vegetation, provide an ideal habitat for trophy-sized largemouth bass. Both the U.S. and Mexican sides boast well-maintained boat ramps and fishing facilities. The Falcon State Park in Texas serves as a primary entry point for many U.S. anglers, while several access points are available for those venturing from Mexico.

Bass Fishing The Baja Peninsula

A beach on the Baja Peninsula

This rugged and beautiful peninsula is flanked by the Pacific Coast on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other The unique confluence of cool and warm waters in Baja creates a rich and dynamic marine environment conducive to bass and other species.

Magdalena Bay, located on the Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur, is one of the prime spots for bass fishing in the region. Baja also offers a unique estuary systems, which, serve as the ideal habitat for various bass species. The estuaries, particularly those along the Sea of

Cortez, are also great for catching grouper, a favorite catch for many due to its challenging fight and delectable taste.

If you’re planning to embark on a bass fishing adventure in Baja, there are multiple ways to approach it. While the peninsula’s rocky shores offer ample opportunities for shore fishing, equipping yourself with a boat or kayak significantly opens up your opportunities.

You don’t have to only fish for bass here. The peninsula’s waters are also teeming with other species such as Dorado, Roosterfish, Yellowtail, and the spectacular Sailfish. Baja is an excellent destination for deep sea fishing.

Best Time of Year for Bass Fishing in Mexico

The spring, summer, and fall months are the best time for bass fishing in Mexico. These months are peak season mostly due to water temperature and bass behavior. Bass are ectothermic creatures, which means their body temperature, metabolism, and activity levels are directly influenced by the temperature of their surroundings. In the warmer months, the water temperature in Mexican lakes and rivers rises. This encourages the bass to feed more aggressively as they prepare for the spawning season that follows, making them more responsive to lures and baits.

Weather conditions also play a pivotal role in determining fishing success. While the radiant Mexican sun is a treat for tourists, bass have a different preference. Calm and overcast days are typically the most fruitful for fishing. Windy days can offer good fishing but they make it difficult to control the boat.

Beyond the broader seasonality, the time of day significantly influences bass fishing outcomes. The early mornings and evenings are often heralded as the best times. These periods witness a drop in light levels, coupled with cooler temperatures and calmer waters. Such conditions drive bass to feed actively, making them more likely to strike at lures.

Fishing Tackle

There are a number of techniques to fish for bass. Casting a reel paired with a medium-heavy rod is often the go-to choice. The precision these tools offer is perfect for targeting largemouth bass lurking around underwater structures. Pair this setup with versatile lures such as crankbaits, top water lures, or spinner baits, and you’re ready to tackle the vast majority of bass habitats Mexico has to offer. You can also use live baits if you prefer.

Fly fishing has also found its niche in Mexico. A well-chosen fly rod and reel combo can be the key to success. When selecting flies, patterns that mimic local baitfish or insects are crucial. In Mexico’s varied lakes and reservoirs, having a selection of both topwater flies and sinking patterns ensures you’re prepared for whatever the bass are biting on.

A man holding a fly rod

Trolling, a technique more commonly associated with the vast open waters of Mexico’s coastal regions, requires its own specialized gear. Trolling rods are typically longer, designed to handle the resistance of dragging lures through open water. When paired with a high-capacity reel and deep-diving lures or swimbaits, they allow anglers to cover large areas efficiently, increasing the odds of enticing a bass from the depths.

While the tools and techniques vary, the underlying principle remains consistent: understanding the behavior of the bass in relation to the environment and equipping oneself with the gear that best complements it. Whether you’re fly fishing in Lake El Salto or casting from shore on the having the right equipment is essential.

It’s important to note that most guides have gear that you can rent. If you don’t have your own gear or if you don’t want to travel with a bunch of fishing gear, you can just use whatever your guide suggests.

Mexico Bass Fishing Regulations

If you plan to go bas fishing in Mexico, it’s important to understand the country’s fishing regulations so you don’t break the law. These rules are in place to ensure sustainable fishing practices.

When fishing from a boat in Mexico, a fishing license is required. Everyone needs a license, including children. Even those who are not fishing need a license.

The good news is that obtaining this license has been made convenient for anglers. You can purchase your licenses online on this website. Furthermore, for those opting for a chartered fishing experience, the captains will help you get a license. Sometimes, the license is included in the price of the tour .

Fishing from shore in Mexico does not require a license, making it an accessible and hassle-free experience for many. The rule is that you need to be at least 250 meters (800 feet) from any swimmers.

Beyond the licensing requirements, it’s also vital to be aware of the fishing limits set by Mexican authorities. These limits are an embodiment of the country’s commitment to preserving its marine and freshwater ecosystems. Adhering to them ensures that fishing remains a sustainable and rewarding activity for generations to come. Your guide will be familiar with the limits. Generally, you can catch up to 10 fish per day. Some of the lakes are catch and release only.

  • Obtain Your Fishing License: Before you cast your line into Mexico’s rich waters, ensuring you have the requisite fishing license is crucial. As highlighted earlier, while fishing from a boat, a license is non-negotiable.
  • Fine-tune Other Logistics: With the core elements in place, dive into other logistics like accommodation, transportation, and any local customs or regulations specific to your chosen destination. If you plan to bring your own boat to Mexico, you’ll also need a temporary import permit for the boat as well as your tow vehicle. You can read my guide to the temporary import permit for more info.

Final Thoughts About Bass Fishing in Mexico

Whether you’re casting your line in the tranquil lakes of Sinaloa, navigating the Sea of Cortez in Baja, bass fishing in Mexico is the epitome of an angling adventure. The country offers some of the best bass fishing lakes in the world. There are miles of coastline for ocean-based bass fishing. There are also a number of bass species to fish for including the popular largemouth bass. You have a great chance of catching a 10 pound trophy fish in Mexico.

There are also some great lodges available. Bass fishing guides can take you to the best fishing spots. It’s easy to rent gear and get a license. Even if you don’t have any experience bass fishing, you can still have a great time

When planning your trip, be sure to consider the time of year. Also, think about the other activities you plan to do in Mexico. Hopefully, this guide helps you catch your next double-digit bass.

El Salto – The Most Famous Bass Fishing Lake in the World

Bass fishing Mexico

Mexico’s Lake El Salto is the most famous bass fishing lake in the world. This reputation has been due to the thousands of huge bass that have been caught and released back in to the lake by Americans. We built the very first lodge on the water at El Salto thinking we would only get about 5 years of great bass fishing. Well, it’s been almost 25 years and El Salto is actually better today than when we first opened up our lodge years ago.

Our clients stay at Club El Salto which is on the water’s edge. Club El Salto’s design came from Casa Mar fishing camp in Costa Rica. It has been one of our favorite camps ever over the past 36 years. It is a six building camp with a restaurant overlooking beautiful Lake El Salto. Each house has its own private bathroom complete with shower. The restaurant has a large 20-ft indoor aquarium with trophy bass exceeding 10 lbs and you will be able to keep up with your favorite sports team at Club El Salto with its satellite T.V.

Although Club El Salto’s prevailing breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean assure great comfort all year, each room has its own air conditioning for even greater comfort.

Club El Salto’s food is just wonderful. Our cook prepares a mixture of American, Mexican, and local seafood dishes that will please the most discerning of palates. Mazatlan, with its fantastic beaches, is your gateway city to both El Salto and Comedero lakes, and is serviced by airlines from all over the U.S.A. You will be picked up at the airport and transported directly to the lake by professional drivers.

Lake El salto is located only 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from Mazatlan airport along a 4 lane highway. This proximity offers some of the world’s best Deep Sea Fishing.

Bass and Bill Combo

The gateway city of Mazatlan offers some of the world’s best Marlin and Sailfishing. If you desire, we can arrange a combo triple header of Mexico bass fishing at Lake Comedero & Lake El Salto, and one or two days Deep Sea fishing out of Mazatlan. Many of our clients like to do a day of salt water fishing while staying at the beautiful El Cid Resorts on the beach. No other place in the world can offer this great combination trip! Let us make your reservation today for your dream fishing-and hunting-trip of a lifetime. (See more combo possibilities below). Come live your dreams…

The camp boats are a new fleet of American bass boats made by Express boat company in Arkansas. They have steering wheels, livewells, front trollers, and Yamaha outboards. Best fishing boats in all of Mexico!

The guides at Club El Salto are all local young men. Many lived in a village now covered by the lake. Be assured that they know the lake better than anyone. Most have been with us from the very beginning. Our guides include Armondo Sr., Armondo Jr., Victor, Oscar, Chelo, German and Juan Manuel. They consistently produce trophy fish for our clients. They are all great guides. The best on the lake.

Fishing Tackle

If you desire, we will furnish you with rods to fish Lake El Salto. Just bring your reels and fishing lures. Each client should bring their own lures.

Fishing Reports

We post a daily fishing report on our ronspeedadventures.com web site Reports Section. These daily reports will give the top 3 boats each day and will include the numbers and size of fish caught. Also, the report includes the baits used and colors, plus the depth of water the fish are caught in. This report also gives the weather with high and low temperatures.

With these daily reports you can prepare extremely well for your trip. You will know what clothes to bring, what lures and colors to bring so your trip is always a success.

Capuli Tree

Long before El Salto lake filled we had picked the very best location on the lake to build our fishing lodge. This location was picked for 2 reasons: a huge, massive Capuli tree over 100 years old, and our desire to build at the water’s edge. The Capuli tree is over 75′ tall and has a shade over 30 yards wide. This tree is very unique as there is not another like it in the area. It’s located at water’s edge about 30 feet from our fishing boats. Its huge shade makes it perfect for outdoor barbecues.

Daily Schedule

Each morning you will be awakened by the camp manager. His staff will bring coffee and fresh orange to your room. This all happens about 1 hour before daylight. You will proceed to the restaurant for a wonderful breakfast.

After breakfast your guide will carry your fishing tackle to the boat while you walk from your room to your boat which takes about 1 minute . Then you leave the dock at safe light and fish until 11:30am, returning to the camp for a noon lunch and siesta.

Most fishermen return to the lake about 2:00pm and end their day’s fishing just before dark.

One of the very best things about our lodge being at the water’s edge is that each client can set his own schedule, leaving and returning to camp when you desire. No van rides or waiting on a van or bus, or waiting on other fishermen to come in from the lake .

The food at Club el Salto is described by clients as fantastic. We have always gone the extra mile for excellent food at all our lodges over the past 36 years. El Salto food is served on a steam table so it is always hot and clients don’t have to wait on their food. You can go back for more as often as you wish. No one goes hungry.

All our meals are supervised by Cheeta, our head cook. She has been with us for 16 years. Our meals are delicious and represent a wide variety of foods. The highlight meal is Steak/Lobster/Baked Potato Night. Our clients get a fine tender grainfed American ribeye steak grilled over mesquite wood just like you like it. If that weren’t enough, you also get a whole lobster tail fresh out of the nearby Sea of Cortez (please note that Lobster is served only when in season). Every meal will have salads, beans, soup, French Fries, etc. All meals have a wide variety of breads including Mexican bolios, tortillas – both corn and flour – regular sliced white bread, and Jiffy cornbread plus Pillsbury biscuits at breakfast.

Other meals include fresh fried shrimp from the nearby ocean, one night of great Mexican food typical of the area, plus a variety of other meals. Each meal will be followed by a delicious dessert. Pies, cakes and Mexican flan are all client favorites.

If all that weren’t enough, we have 3 different flavors of delicious ice cream 24/7 in the restaurant. You can eat all you wish day or night. To top off our restaurant service, there is an open bar with a mix of American liquor and domestic liquor.

Just so clients don’t forget the purpose of the trip, the restaurant has a 20′ long aquarium with huge bass from Lake El Salto.

Fishing Guide Services on 4 Lakes

LAKE GUNTERSVILLE

Guntersville Lake is an internationally renowned fishery for largemouth bass. It was also the host of the 2020 Bassmaster Classic, where records were shattered. With its shallow and dynamic features, abundance of aquatic vegetation, and current generated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, Guntersville is the ideal bass factory.

Weiss Lake has earned its reputation as the crappie capital of the world. Yet, it also boasts exceptional populations of trophy spotted bass and largemouth bass, making it one of the world's top destinations for these species. Tournaments often require over 20 lbs. for 5 fish to clinch a win. Similar to Guntersville, Weiss Lake is shallow with plentiful natural cover.

NEELY HENRY LAKE

Neely Henry Lake stands out as the most distinctive fishery in northern Alabama. While it resembles a genuine river system to the north, its southern end is spacious and resembles a vast lake. It is abundant with sizable largemouth and spotted bass that can be caught using a diverse range of techniques on any given day. Having grown up within walking distance of its shoreline, I fished there regularly.

LOGAN MARTIN LAKE

Logan Martin Lake has earned its nickname as the lake of a thousand coves. This renowned fishery is famous for its exceptional spotted bass population. During spring and fall, catching 30 or more high-quality bass per day is typical. It is also where I have mastered my distinctive crankbait fishing technique, which I am happy to teach you.

Crappie Fishing

Craving a thrilling Crappie fishing expedition? Look no further. Our skilled guides provide everything you need: boats, life jackets, fuel, tackle, and enticing artificial bait. Explore a range of proven techniques for capturing Crappie like never before. Connect with Captain Shane for more information on this exciting angling opportunity.

The popularity of bass fishing in Mexico has led to the development of guided fishing trips that cater to both experienced and novice anglers.

In this article, we’ll explore the best bass fishing lakes in Mexico and provide additional information on guided fishing trips.

What is Bass Fishing?

bass fishing trips

Bass fishing is a popular form of sport fishing that involves catching different species of bass. Different types of bass include largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. Bass fishing can be done in a variety of environments, including lakes, rivers, and streams. It can be done using a variety of techniques, including using live bait, artificial lures, and fly fishing.

The sport requires patience, skill, and knowledge of the behavior and habitat of the bass. As well as the conditions of the environment in which they are found. Bass fishing is not only a popular pastime for recreational anglers but also a competitive sport. With tournaments held at the local, regional, and national levels.

Best Time for Bass Fishing in Mexico

The best time for bass fishing in Mexico is during the winter months, from November to February. During this time, the water temperature is cooler. The bass tends to be more active, making for better fishing conditions.

The water temperature plays a crucial role in the behavior of bass. Cooler water temperatures tend to be more conducive to successful fishing. When the water is too warm, bass tends to move into deeper waters or become less active. This makes it more difficult to catch them.

Weather conditions also play a role in the best time for bass fishing in Mexico. Calm and overcast days tend to be better for fishing. As the bass are more likely to stay close to the water’s edge and be active. Windy and stormy days can make fishing more challenging. As the bass tend to move into deeper waters and be less active.

The best time of day for bass fishing in Mexico is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. When the water temperature is cooler and the bass tends to be more active. This is especially true during the winter months when the days are shorter and the sun is not as intense.

Fishing Boats and Equipment for Guided Bass Fishing Trips

bass fishing trips

Fishing boats and equipment are essential components of guided bass fishing trips. The type of boat and equipment used can greatly impact the angler’s experience and success on the water.

Specialized bass boats designed specifically for bass fishing are the preferred choice for most guided bass fishing trips. These boats come equipped with a range of features that are tailored to the needs of bass fishing enthusiasts. They typically include trolling motors, which allow for quiet and precise movement on the water. Making it easier to get closer to the fish without disturbing them. Additionally, these boats are often fitted with fish finders. Which helps locate fish and identify the best spots to drop a line.

When it comes to equipment, anglers typically use baitcasting or spinning reels and medium to heavy action rods. Baitcasting reels are preferred by many anglers because they offer more control and precision when casting while spinning reels are generally easier to use for beginners.

In addition to reels and rods, anglers also use a variety of lures and baits to catch bass. These can include plastic worms, jigs, crankbaits, and topwater lures, among others. Live baits like shiners or minnows can also be effective in certain situations.

Guided bass fishing trips may also provide additional amenities on board the boat, such as a cooler with refreshments, comfortable seating, and a canopy for shade. Some fishing trips may even offer an open bar or snacks for the anglers.

Alabama Fishing

The TEAM of professional anglers at BassOnline is here to help you catch more fish. Knowing where to look, which baits to use, and how conditions affect the fish’s habits will significantly improve any angler’s skills to catch more bass consistently.

Every individual fishery will have secrets, but there are general rules and fishing tips to help you catch bass in any water with bass fishing near me.

Where To Catch Largemouth Bass

Anglers can find largemouth bass in many great freshwater lakes, like Lake Okeechobee, Clear Lake, Lake Fork, Lake Guntersville, Headwaters Lake, California Delta , and other areas. But can spend hours without catching anything if they don’t know where to throw their lure. So one of the top bass fishing tips is to look for cover on the surface that bass would be hiding under.

Cover-holding fish can come in many forms, including grass, lily pads, rocks, wood, boat docks, and more.

The largemouth bass is ambush predators, so their go-to spots are often areas where they can conceal themselves to ambush prey easily and for protection from more giant predators.

Looking for a good spot with coverage is the best way to find bass rather than waiting until you spot one roaming the open water or casting blindly for hours in random places.

Lures And Baits To Catch Bass

When choosing which bait or lure to use, a bass angler’s best decision is to match the local baitfish.

Bass has a broad diet ranging from bluegill to stripers and shad to bugs and baby ducks. Therefore, it’s essential to ensure your lure imitates what the bass could be eating naturally, which will likely change throughout the seasons and locations .

For instance, if the local bass is feeding on shad, the angler should throw a silver swimbait or crankbait.

Understand Conditions When Fishing

Sun, wind, and water temperature can all significantly affect an angler getting a bite. Therefore, knowing how the bass may behave under different conditions is critical to being a consistent bass fisherman.

Largemouth bass tends to be more active and visible on cloudy days. Professional anglers suggest using moving baits such as chatter baits , spinnerbaits, and topwater plugs to hook an active bass on overcast days.

On sunny days, largemouth bass tends to hide undercover and wait for baitfish to come to them. The best fishing tips these days involve using a bottom-bouncing bait such as a Texas-rigged soft plastic or a jig. Then, flip and pitch your lure to the base of the cover to catch bass waiting there to strike the passing bait. Important to remember a bass needs to eat every three days, so even in the heat of the summer you can catch big bass !

Windy days are known to cause largemouth bass to become extra active. Another reason some wind is good is it disturbs the water surface making it less likely for an angler to spook the nearby bass. Unless the wind is excessive and gets dangerous, try to cast a moving bait into the wind to hook your next trophy, possibly.

Water Temperature

Water temps can vary drastically in different locations and affect the local bass’s feeding patterns and activity levels. There are many techniques and tricks to catch largemouth bass in different temperatures. Still, the general rule is that it’s best to use slower-moving baits in cooler water temps and faster lures in warmer water conditions.

Other Fishing Tips

Practice One Knot

Any professional bass angler will tell you knots are essential, and one of the worst feelings is losing a fish because of a bad knot. The best advice, especially for beginners, is to learn one versatile knot and practice until its second nature. Become familiar with a simple knot such as the Clinch knot or Palomar knot that can be used for all bass fishing adventures. There are numerous videos and diagrams online to help you get familiar with these and other types of knots.

Do Some Research

Technology should be a modern angler’s best friend as it has revolutionized how one approaches a new location. Technology dramatically makes it easier for anglers to fish anywhere and learn a new fishing spot. Take advantage of google earth and other platforms to understand the features in the area you are looking to fish. Identify the areas holding bass, such as points, ledges, creeks, and other covers. Researching ahead of time can help you plan your day of fishing. You may even find what the local forage looks like to know which lure to start with; however, it’s still best to bring different options with you and check it out on your fishing day, as conditions can always change.

Be Open-Minded

Many anglers will benefit from experiencing different fisheries and learning the different habits and factors that come to play. Become a well-rounded angler by practicing new techniques, becoming familiar with various conditions, and experimenting with other lures based on the local area.

Fish different ponds , creeks, and lakes than your home waters to become familiar with varying clarities of water and depths. For example, if you usually catch bass in dark waters, try getting a bite in clear water.

Be Persistent

The fishing game is not always easy, and there will be days when the bite is tough. The best option on days like this is to thoroughly fish an area you’re confident in rather than hopping from spot to spot too fast. Be confident in the baits or artificial lures you use, and thoroughly fish an area you believe could be holding fish.

2024 WON Bass Clear Lake Open at Begins April 17

Anglers look forward to potential big bass slugfest at California’s premier largemouth lake.

San Clemente, Calif. – April 4, 2024 –– Clear Lake, nestled in the Coast Ranges of California mountains, at the foot of Mount Konocti is known as being the largest natural lake entirely in the state of California.  It is known for its picturesque scenery from any direction and for being a rich, fertile body of water.

It is also known as one of the best bass fisheries in the world.  For many years, Clear Lake has been ranked as one of the top 10 bass fisheries in the country by Bassmaster Magazine, and the northern California waterway has been the site of fireworks for WON Bass and the Clear Lake Open before.

Clear Lake has seen record setting performances in the past, with Byron Velvick winning a Bassmaster Invitational in 2000 with a then three-day record of 83 pounds, 5 ounces and in 2007, Steve Kennedy set a four-day record with 122 pounds, 14 ounces in winning the Bassmaster Elite Series Golden State Shootout.

In other words, having winning weights that average more than 25 pounds per day in a Clear Lake event are common, as evidenced by Nathan Phillips winning the Clear Lake Open in 2023 with 76.34 pounds.  According to Ish Monroe, the Oakdale, Calif. pro who is fitting the 2024 Clear Lake Open into his national event schedule, more of the same can be expected.

Monroe said that anything will go later this month.  “The lake should be fishing fairly large with the higher water levels, and the field should be able to do anything from finesse fishing to sightfishing and have a chance to win,” he said.  “I expect that the weights will be good, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see someone win running a pattern, or that someone could win on a one cast spot – it really has the potential to be a great event.”

When asked what his thoughts about the outlook for the event, 2023 WON Bass U.S. Open Champion Kyle Grover replied, “epic.” The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. pro said that the conditions looked amazing.  “I really think the fish are in a stage, and the weather conditions are going to collide at a point that it should be an amazing event,” he said.  “I think the pressure could get to the lake a little, but it’s still going to take someone averaging in the high 20’s daily to win; it’s just that good of a fishery.”

To combat the pressure of a large field, Grover suggested that anglers have two or three areas to remain competitive, and he said that boat draw would be a factor.  “I think you’ll need a few areas to rotate through to win the event, but that’s also going to depend on where you get slotted for takeoff,” he said.  “Being able to get on your areas will dictate a lot, but I really think it’s going to be an epic event.”

The winner of the 2024 WON Bass Clear Lake Open will earn the Ranger Boats / Mercury Motor prize boat, and the Golden Tickets to the 2025 Bassmaster BASS Nation National Championship will be awarded to the top five Pro and AAA anglers and will further develop the season long competition to see who will receive guaranteed slots into the 2025 Bassmaster Opens Elite Qualifiers.

There are currently more than 156 pro anglers and more than 180 AAA partners signed up for the event.  WON Bass is seeking more Pro anglers to balance the field – signups remain open until April 12, 2024.

AAA anglers looking to enter will now be required to sign up with a Pro partner not currently registered for the event to guarantee their entry, and there is of course more room for individual Pro anglers to register currently.

The 2024 WON Bass Western Opens Series of events Consisting of five events in California, Arizona and Nevada moves next to the California Open at Clear Lake April 17 to 19, 2024.  The series will culminate with the 2024 WON Bass U.S. Open at Lake Mohave in October.  The full schedule of the five event dates are as follows:

Jan. 31–Feb. 2, Lake Shasta – Champion Nick Wood – 47.42 pounds April 17-19, Clear Lake May 15-17, Lake Havasu Sept. 18-20, Lake Mead Oct. 14-16, U.S. Open at Lake Mohave

Get ready to kick back and reel in some big catches!

Join PA's Travel Newsletter

It’s important to note fishing licenses are required to fish in Pennsylvania waters, and many areas have special regulations and creel limits on fishing. Anglers are encouraged to study the current regulations for their favorite fishing holes that get updated on an annual basis.

1. PRESQUE ISLE BAY

A fishing trip to the Keystone State wouldn’t be complete without casting a line into Lake Erie’s Presque Isle Bay , the oldest harbor on the Great Lakes. With the bay’s northern shore bordered by Presque Isle State Park and the bay’s southern shore by the city of Erie, the area’s piers, Perry Monument, lagoons, and boat landings are all popular fishing locations for local and visiting anglers. Lake Erie’s shallow waters make it a premier destination for anglers hoping to reel in panfish, perch, bass, muskellunge, walleye, northern pike, crappies, smelt, and steelhead.

2. NESHANNOCK CREEK

Lawrence County

Neshannock Creek begins in Mercer County at the confluence of Cool Spring Creek and Otter Creek, which, incidentally, is how it got its name with Neshannock meaning “a place of two streams.” The beautiful 20-mile freestone stream is stocked with trout in both spring and fall. Fly fishermen tend to prefer the waters near the upper part of the creek, but excellent angling can be enjoyed further downstream, as well.

3. SLIPPERY ROCK CREEK

Portersville

Slippery Rock Creek McConnells Mill State Park FB

Not too far from Pittsburgh’s city limits flows a stream known for its incredible trout and small mouth bass fishing. Heading south into Beaver River, Slippery Rock Creek has remote, gorgeous stretches that can be accessed by trails in McConnells Mill State Park. The creek is also the only Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission catch and release fly-fishing location that is open year-round.

4. CEDAR RUN

creek running in the forest

Packed with deep pools and dense trout populations, Cedar Run starts in Tioga County and flows for more than eight miles into Pine Creek in Lycoming County. There’s easy access from the road to a number of small fishing spots along Cedar Run, where anglers often find plenty of fish.

5. SUSQUEHANNA RIVER

Wilkes-Barre

old bridge on river

The Susquehanna River is arguably one of the top fishing locations in the entire state of Pennsylvania, flowing from upstate New York state to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and connecting to many well-known bodies of water. At approximately 444 miles long, it is the longest river on the U.S. east coast and the 16th longest in the United States. The river’s broad, shallow waters provide perfect habitat for smallmouth bass along with walleye, catfish, and smaller panfish.

6. LAKE ARTHUR

The 3,225-acre Lake Arthur is a warm-water fishery located in Moraine State Park. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stock muskellunge, walleye, channel catfish, and hybrid striped bass and common wild species include northern pike, largemouth bass, channel catfish, black crappie, and bluegill.

7. OIL CREEK

The site of the world’s first commercial oil well, Oil Creek , along with several of its tributaries, is one of Pennsylvania’s top trout and bass streams with the creek carving a valley of deep hollows, steep hillsides, and wetlands. The best access to the water for fishing is in Oil Creek State Park, between Titusville and Oil City. The water here offers beautiful pools, riffles, and runs. While in the area, be sure to stop in the visitor’s center at Oil Creek State Park, which tells the story of the early petroleum industry by interpreting oil boomtowns, oil wells, and early transportation.

8. SPRING CREEK

Spring Creek

Spring Creek , just outside State College, is known as an angler’s dream location. The wild trout fishery is full of pristine fishing hotspots stocked with 16- to 20-inch trout. A favorite destination along the creek is Fisherman’s Paradise, which offers solitude and lots of wild and aggressive fish. Surveys conducted by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission have consistently shown Spring Creek to be one of the most densely populated wild brown trout streams in PA.

9. SLATE RUN

Slate Run has become one of the most well-known freestone trout streams in the eastern United States. Wild brook trout and a few brown trout reside in the upper part of the stream, and wild brown trout reside in the lower part.

10. LETORT SPRING RUN

The legendary LeTort Spring Run is a limestone spring creek that has attracted anglers for decades and is sure to offer fly fishing at its best. The wide range of freshwater crustaceans providing nutrient-rich food together with the stable water temperature year-round has resulted in an active and healthy trout population that fishermen come from miles around to experience. A popular fly fishing destination, this is one of the finest limestone trout streams in the nation, known for large wild browns that are particularly wily.

11. YELLOW BREECHES CREEK

Mechanicsburg

Yellow Breeches is arguably one of the most popular streams in Pennsylvania and a premier fly fishing trout destination. One of the more heavily fished steams in the nation, the waterway emerges from various springs that flow through the Huntsdale Hatchery and the source of the creek. A large stocking program bolsters the creek’s fish population, attracting numerous anglers along its entire length.

12. MONOCACY CREEK

creek running near houses

Most trout in Monocacy Creek are at least 12 inches in length, with some exceeding 15 inches. For the seasoned anglers looking for a challenge, the wild browns that roam the creek are no easy task to pull in. With great fishing offered year round, the Monocacy is a perfect place to come with a spinner rod or fly gear.

13. WISSAHICKON CREEK

Wissahickon Creek proves that anglers don’t need to travel to remote locations to enjoy great trout fishing in Pennsylvania. More than 50 miles of rugged trails offer hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians the opportunity to explore the park’s dense forests, open meadows, and shaded creeks. Wissahickon Creek is stocked with trout every spring, luring fisherman to its banks, while birdwatchers migrate to the restored Andorra and Houston meadows to witness the arrival of dozens of bird species. The creek is in one of the areas that mark trout season’s opening day on April 6, so anglers eager to get an early start, take note.

14. YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER

Anglers can try their hand at float fishing on the famous Youghiogheny River outside Pittsburgh, where excellent trout and smallmouth bass fishing opportunities exist along the massive waterway. The Youghiogheny River provides some of the best whitewater boating in the eastern United States, as well as spectacular scenery. The Youghiogheny features a nine-mile, all-tackle trophy trout section, several fly fishing areas and easy access at Ohiopyle State Park.

15. PENNS CREEK

Penns Creek is Pennsylvania’s longest and largest limestone stream. Bubbling from a cave located about 15 miles east of State College, the stream stays modest in size until it reaches Spring Mills where it is joined by Sinking Creek. At this point, Penns Creek becomes larger in size, and an excellent trout stream for wild and stocked brown trout, as well as stocked rainbows. This magnificent scenic stream boasts great March Brown and Sulphur hatches, and the Green Drake, which brings anglers from all over the country.

Maryland Fishing Report for April 12, 2024

M aryland anglers are taking advantage of pleasant weather to fish for a variety of species this week. Trout, largemouth bass, and blue catfish are at the top of the list, but fun fishing is where you find it.

Forecast Summary: April 10 – April 16:

With continued April rains, the increased river flows and the longer days will continue to slowly heat up our local Maryland waters for the progression of spawning gamefish. Main Chesapeake Bay surface temperatures below Annapolis have risen to the mid 50s. Water temperatures for the upper Bay are running cooler at 51 degrees. River temperatures have also risen to the mid to upper 50s, although  smaller streams and downwind areas will warm faster  on a sunny day and can hold temperatures even warmer. Such low salinity areas will be prime areas to look for hickory and American shad as they move upriver to spawn.

Expect above average flows for most Maryland rivers and streams.   As a result of recent rains, expect poor water clarity for the Maryland portion of the Bay down to the Bay Bridge as well as the Potomac River down to the 301 Bridge. To see the latest water clarity conditions, check  Eyes on the Bay Satellite Maps . There will be above average  tidal currents   through Saturday as a result of the previous new moon on April 9.

For more detailed and up-to-date fishing conditions in your area, continue to check out  Click Before You Cast .

Upper Chesapeake Bay

High water and stained conditions because of last week’s rain made it tough for anglers fishing for hickory shad this past weekend. Despite these conditions, anglers are catching and releasing hickory shad in the Susquehanna and Octoraro Creek. There were even rumors of the first American shad to be caught in the river.

Anglers are urged to have a variety of lures in their tackle boxes when fishing for hickory and American shad. Color options can change from day to day. Some of the staples are red and white, pink, and combinations of yellow and chartreuse in various weights, along with small silver and gold spoons. Most of these lure options can be used with spinning gear or fly-fishing gear.

Most any 6-foot or 7-foot medium spinning rod will work well with a 6-pound test monofilament line. If using fly-fishing tackle, a 7-weight fly rod at 9 feet is a good choice. A 250-grain sinking fly line with a 24-inch, 6-pound mono leader is a good choice when fishing from a kayak or boat. A sinking tip fly line can be a good choice when fishing from shore. Most often shad will pick up a lure at the end of a drift as the lure begins to swing around to a downstream sweep.

Fishing for blue catfish is the best show in town this month, while targeting of striped bass will be closed until May 16. Blue catfish and channel catfish can be found in all the tidal rivers in the upper Bay. The lower Susquehanna River and the Chester River tend to have the greatest numbers, but the other rivers are catching up fast. Fresh cut gizzard shad, menhaden, or white perch are three of the most popular baits, but chicken liver and a variety of other baits can work well also. During the striped bass closure some upper Bay charter boats are offering trips to fish for blue catfish. Check the internet or the  DNR online map of licensed charter boats and fishing guides .

White perch are being caught in the tidal rivers a few miles below the spawning reaches this week. In most cases the water is still shallow enough to be able to use small jigs or slip bobbers with grass shrimp, small minnows, or pieces of bloodworm for bait. In deeper waters a high low bottom rig may be necessary with the above baits. The white perch are steadily moving downriver to their summer habitats and should be in many of those areas by the beginning of May.

White perch continue to move down the tidal rivers from the major spawning areas this week and can be found several miles below those sections of the tidal rivers. In rivers such as the Choptank they can still be found upriver of Denton in shallow enough waters to be able to fish with small jigs and slip bobber rigs baited with grass shrimp, minnows, or pieces of bloodworm. In deeper waters a two-hook bottom rig with the same baits is popular. Anglers can look forward to these white perch arriving at their normal summer habitats by sometime in May. Often the largest white perch are the first to arrive at these areas and offer great fishing opportunities near deep water piers, docks, and rock breakwaters and jetties.

Striped bass are now beginning to spawn at their spawning reaches on the Choptank River, the main spawn is expected to occur in the next week or so based on suitable water temperatures. Ideal water temperatures for striped bass spawning is generally agreed to be about 58-degrees. All of us will keep our fingers crossed that it will be a successful spawn.

Fisheries biologist Jim Uphoff is conducting striped bass spawning survey work on the Choptank River and offered this report: “ We saw water temperatures of 52-53 degrees while we were out Monday. There has been a little spawning since March 25 and temperatures have been in the low 50s generally.  That’s likely to change with the warming weather.  There is lots of freshwater and only a hint of salt about a mile above Windyhill,” which is just above the town of Choptank.

Plenty of rain in the preceding months encouraged a plankton bloom, and subsequent zooplankton bloom, so newly hatched striped bass young have something to eat. The fishery is closed to all targeting in the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal rivers right now, as we must make some sacrifices to help the population of spawning adults increase, to the future benefit of all anglers and lovers of striped bass.

Anglers looking for some catch-and-release fun on the Choptank River are finding hickory shad in the upper Choptank near the Red Bridges area. Anglers are also reporting some hickory shad action below the Crouse Mill Dam on the Tuckahoe. Overhead tree branches usually dictate the use of spinning gear in tight casting situations. Shad darts of various bright colors and weights as well as small shiny gold and silver spoons are the most popular lures to use. Anglers are encouraged to report their hickory shad fishing trips to the shad survey on DNR’s  volunteer angler survey website .

Fishing for a mix of blue catfish and channel catfish offers some fishing opportunities for anglers in the middle Bay. They can be found in all the region’s tidal rivers, but the Choptank River often holds the greatest populations of blue catfish. Warming water temperatures have the catfish moving more freely now and stretches of the Choptank River from the Dover Bridge area to Denton are good places to fish. The lower Tuckahoe River also holds good numbers of blue and channel catfish this week. Cut bait or chicken liver are good baits to use on circle hooks rigged to a sliding fish-finder rig.

All catch and release of striped bass is closed in all Maryland waters through May 15, until the summer striped bass season begins May 16. The main stem of the  Potomac River from the Wilson Bridge south will be open to catch-and-release fishing for striped bass until May 15 . The tidal Potomac is running strong this week and water clarity is at a minimum due to heavy runoff from recent rains. Jigging will be one of the most popular ways to fish for them and those deciding to use cut bait must use non-offset circle hooks.

Anglers flocking to the Fletcher’s Landing-Chain Bridge area of the tidal Potomac are seeing water conditions improve this week. The waters are still cloudy and water levels are still up, but conditions are better than they were and may be in good shape by the weekend. The hickory shad are present in good numbers and despite water clarity issues there is good catch and release fishing this week. Anglers should have a wide variety of colorful shad darts of various weights and some small silver and gold spoons in their tackle box when fishing for hickory shad. They should also have a District of Columbia fishing license. One can fish from the riverbanks, launch a kayak, a canoe or rent a rowboat at Fletcher’s Landing. There is also good catch-and-release fishing to be found at the upper sections of Mattawoman Creek.

Fishing for blue catfish in the tidal Potomac, Patuxent, Nanticoke, and other Eastern Shore rivers is very good this week. There are several charter boats that offer trips to fish for blue catfish in the tidal Potomac offering plenty of fishing action and fish fillets to take home. The DNR website includes a  map listing various charters  and what fish they fish for.

Water temperatures are warming enough to cause the blue catfish to move from the deepest channels to slightly shallower waters. They are actively feeding, so fishing with cut bait in the form of gizzard shad, menhaden, white perch, or chicken liver are good baits to use. A simple fish-finder rig rigged with a 2-inch float in front of a circle hook is the most popular rig that anglers use from the river shores or from boats.

The stretch of the tidal Potomac River from the Wilson Bridge south is one of the best places to catch blue catfish on the Potomac this week. The stretch of river above the Benedict Bridge on the Patuxent offers the best blue catfish fishing on the Patuxent and the Sharptown area on the Nanticoke River is an excellent place to fish. Tributaries to the tidal Potomac should not be overlooked as well as the Wicomico and Pocomoke rivers on the lower Eastern Shore.

Freshwater Fishing

Many rivers and creeks were experiencing high flows last week, making for some difficult trout fishing. The good news is the high flows helped spread the stocked trout over wider areas so anglers could find some elbow room in the recently stocked put-and-take waters. Conditions are improving in most waters, setting the stage for good trout fishing this week. Anglers often encounter other species of fish when fishing for trout. Recently Blake Cronk caught a fallfish in the North Branch of the Potomac that  set a new state record  for the species at 3.2-pounds, breaking the previous record of 3-pounds.

Stocking crews are out this week replenishing many put-and-take waters and these stockings will continue.  Check the DNR website for trout stockings near you .

A good number of the put-and-take trout stockings are taking place in community ponds, which make for easy and safe fishing opportunities for families and small children. A simple bobber and worm or Powerbait rig are all that is needed to entice the stocked trout or resident sunfish to bite. There are also a few trout management waters set aside for our younger anglers. The fishing rodeo season is upon us and events are being scheduled near you.  Check the DNR website for the 2024 schedule of fishing rodeo events .

Largemouth bass are in a pre-spawn mode of activity and are aggressively seeking out food items in a wide variety of water depths. Grass beds are beginning to emerge and can be a magnet for largemouth bass looking for baitfish or crayfish. Water temperatures are about ideal for largemouth bass so they will be found feeding throughout the day. Cover such as fallen treetops or sunken wood in moderate depth water will also beckon to largemouth bass. In the shallow and moderate water depths, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and paddletails can be good choices. When working close to grass beds and structure, stick worms and soft plastics can work well. In deeper waters near structure, crankbaits and craw jigs can entice a largemouth to strike. Male largemouth bass are beginning to explore the spawning shallows, and some are even forming spawning beds to attract females.

Northern snakeheads are becoming more active, and the largest ones are the most prone to be feeding. Water temperatures are still a little cool to their liking, so sunny afternoons are a good time to find them in the shallower waters on the sunny side of tidal creeks. White paddletails tend to be the most popular lure to use at this time but chatterbaits may work also. Fishing large minnows under a bobber is a time proven method to fish for snakeheads when waters are cool and grass beds are yet to fill out.

Cooler water temperatures are much to the liking of chain pickerel this week. The grass beds where they enjoy lurking have yet to fill out so these ambush predators can be found holding near any type of structure – sunken wood usually fits the bill. Casting spinners, spoons, jerkbaits, or paddletails rigged with single inline hooks makes releasing fish easier and reduces harm to the fish.

There is hardly a better time of the year to fish for crappie than March and April; water temperatures are at an ideal time for the fish to be feeding near structure that is not too deep. Marina docks, old piers, fallen treetops, sunken wood or brush, and bridge piers are all good places to look for crappie. Small minnows under a slip bobber are hard to beat. Small soft plastic curly-tail jigs or marabou jigs are very popular lures to use for casting with a slow retrieve.

Atlantic Ocean and Coastal Bays

Surf anglers on Assateague Island are starting to catch black drum this week. Clams and cut bait are two of the most popular baits. Tautog are being caught at the Ocean City Inlet and Route 50 Bridge area in good numbers this week by anglers using sand fleas or pieces of green crab. Striped bass are also entertaining anglers casting soft plastic jigs. Many of the striped bass are a little shy of the required 28-inch minimum but offer catch-and-release action.

The boats and captains heading out to the wreck and reef sites are finding good fishing for tautog this week for their anglers. Quite a few of the tautog are weighing in at the double-digit category. Anglers are releasing many of the larger tautog in the name of conservation and filling out their four-fish limits with smaller fish.

Maryland anglers are taking advantage of pleasant weather to fish for a variety of species this week. Trout, largemouth bass, and blue catfish are at the top of the list, but fun fishing is where you find it.  Forecast Summary: April 10 – April 16: With continued April rains, the increased river flows and the […]
