Essential Britain & Ireland
Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
Highlights of Ireland & Scotland
Tour guide (Henry) and driver (Jurgen) were both excellent. The hotels in Belfast and Kilarney were not great. overall, the pace and sights were very good.
England, Scotland and Ireland end Dublin
pretty good considering all

Britain and Ireland Panorama (16 Days)
Anna was amazing. I really enjoyed the trip it actually was more than I expected. Our guide ANNA really made the trip.
Best of Britain (11 Days)
this tour exceeding our expectations, the Guide ( Jacquline Green )and Bus ( Lee ) driver went over and above to make sure every member of tour was included, comfortable and made this trip to UK even more memorable. The Guide gave us plenty of information regarding history and was extremely informative on every location we passed and stopped at. we loved the local treats supplied by the Guide as well. The bus was comfortable, the intinerary was perfect and kept us busy including as much as possible. The accommodation was excellent. I would definitely recommend this company and way of travel to others. and we would use Trafalgar again in the future.
Britain and Ireland Explorer (16 Days)
This tour was absolutely amazing. So much to see, and never enough time. But everything that I saw and everywhere I went was necessary. There was no waste of time events or towns visited. The tour guide was also just the best. Rob really went above and beyond to help people out, to explain the itinerary each day, his recommendations and ideas were super helpful. He seemed super passionate about the history and culture of the countries we visited too. The hotels were for the most part good standard. One or two I wouldn't stay at again, but they really are just a place to sleep and store your luggage while you're exploring. It's long days on the coach but the scenery well makes up for it. Nothing felt rushed, except when the trip was widening up and the days just flew by. But that's personal perception I highly recommend this tour, especially if you get Rob and Tom
The Best of Britain & Ireland
Our tour guide was excellent. She has an amazing grasp of the history, customs, and sites we visited. Our only criticism is that we were rushed through the best sites because of the bus/coach schedule and there was not enough time to visit the site, grab lunch, and/or visit souvenir shops or local vendors. We had barely enough time to quickly hit the highlights and skip some of the more interesting aspects of the location before having to board the coach.
England, Scotland & Wales
The trip as a once in a lifetime experience for my best friend and I. It was our first time travelling to Europe together, and our first time on a Cosmos tour... and we will definitely be doing more trips like these in the future. The accommodations were great and so was our itinerary. We were slightly disappointed that we couldn't go to Stonehenge due to the summer solstice, but our tour guide, Oshan, made sure we got to see some other fantastic and unique stone circles in many places we went. Our vacation was truly incredible!
Britain & Ireland Discovery (Classic, 22 Days)
Tour guide and coach driver were excellent. Food, optional experiences and inclusions, especially the little taste tests like shortbread, ice cream, Irn Bru and fudge were all excellent and well thought out. Tours of a distillery and Guinness brewery were all good. Local guides were good and Ronan in Derry/Londonderry was excellent - very knowledgeable and passionate around the history of the city. All in all a wonderful experience. Thanks to Ben , Alf and our relief drivers.
Britain and Ireland Grandeur (20 Days)
My UK Grandeur trip was magnificent as I knew very little of the places we visited as I had not visited . Our Tour Leader made it extra special for me because of the quality of the background knowledge he gave us on each place we visited- this included historical knowledge including knowledge of people and events, his knowledge of literature and architecture pertaining to where we were visiting, and his humorous stories. He chose extra, very personable and knowledgeable people to show us around certain towns and cities for example: Belfast where we listened to men both Protestant and Catholic involved in the ongoing religious war, and Liverpool where we saw the Cathedral and the areas important to the early days of the Beatle's lives and fame, we dined at Cardiff and Eire while listening to stories and their characteristic humour accompanied by traditional music. And he offered a few 'extra special highlights' to show us which I relished-for example, the hidden grove with an altar for saying Mass when doing so was banned for Catholics, the meal with the owners of the Manor in York. Highlights I'll enjoy forever It was a superb trip, well managed, with great accommodation and stops If I had one request it would be add a few extra days on so the latter half could be slowed down and more time spent - perhaps seeing a Shakespeare performance on the Stratford on Avon riverside, visiting Oxford with time to visit (as I did in Dublin) and a drive past either Balmoral or Windsor as they seem so close by. May I add another - a visit to a local in both Penzance (with a pirate's cove) and in Cornwall to hear an old man who speaks like we heard in the radio programme "The Archers. I'd enrol for this trip purely to see what we did which was marvellous and to see these extras The monthly timing of this trip was weather perfect - yes it was coldish up north in Skye but that surely was to be expected.
5 Day Skye & Highland Fling
I just finished my 5 day trip with Macbackpackers and I wish it wasn’t over! Our tour guide Neil kept me entertained the whole entire trip with his humorous jokes and interesting stories about Scotland. We got to see so many things in the span of 5 days, it was the perfect trip to introduce me to this beautiful place. Will 100% recommend Macbackpackers to everyone!

Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.
So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.
Your next gig awaits
It all starts here.

Hallelujah! The Gospel Messiah comes to the UK – a photo and audio essay
Handel with Hammond organ and hand claps. Scatting and swing. Five saxophones – this is Messiah, but not perhaps as you know it. Marin Alsop’s Gospel Messiah had its European premiere at the Royal Albert Hall on 7 December, ahead of a broadcast on BBC Radio 3 tonight
T hirty years ago conductor Marin Alsop was chatting with friends in New York. “They asked what I was up to,” she says. “I told them, ‘Handel’s Messiah’. They said ‘The one where the audience stand up for the Hallelujah Chorus at the end? I like that bit but it takes too long until that happens!” Why not try an update, thought Alsop. “I had always wanted to reimagine it – it lends itself to lots of different feels, and I wanted new audiences to hear the piece.” The 1741 work has been endlessly embellished, tweaked and reimagined, even by Handel himself. Mozart was commissioned to rewrite it with more woodwind. While Handel’s original choir had numbered 20 or so and the orchestra not many more, by the 1850s, there were performances with thousands of singers and nearly 500 musicians. In 1992, Quincy Jones rethought it as the Grammy-winning A Soulful Celebration – and its Hallelujah Chorus is one of the world’s most instantly recognisable (and most memed) pieces of classical music. This month – like every December – there are performances all over the world from Philadelphia to Paris and Perth - both Scotland’s and Australia’s.
Marin Alsop rehearses the BBC Concert Orchestra, the big band, and the choir (the London Adventist Chorale with the BBC Symphony Chorus) at Henry Wood Hall, London SE1. Middle right: South African tenor soloist Zwakele Tshabalala with Karin Hendrickson, who is assisting Marin Alsop.
“I got together with Bob Christianson and Gary Anderson who wrote for my swing band,” continues Alsop. “I gave them a score. I think they probably knew the Hallelujah Chorus . I told them “I want to reimagine Messiah. I want to preserve its integrity but update it. They were both, ‘you want to WHAT? And you want us to do WHAT?’”

Alsop and her collaborators cut part three of Handel’s lengthy oratorio, so that their version ends with the Hallelujah Chorus and thus tells the Christmas story. “We wrote for just two soloists – there wasn’t the budget for all four! Handel’s original instrumentation is small – strings, some woodwind, harpsichord. We took out the winds and added saxes, five, plus a Hammond organ, electric guitar, drums and piano.”
The DNA of the piece remains the same, but the melodies, the harmonies, the instrumentation are all treated differently.
Swing, shuffle, jazz and blues as well as gospel are part of the mix, as well as scatting and improvisation. “Of course the Hallelujah Chorus had to be a gospel number.” The work begins, though, with the overture exactly as Handel wrote it – before the rhythm section kicks in. “I don’t want people to know right away that it’s different, let’s start the same and gradually work our way into it.”
The work – cheekily titled Too Hot to Handel – was premiered in 1993 in the Lincoln Center, New York. “People went crazy. They loved it,” says Alsop. “We did it for 10 or 15 years in New York and it’s been performed around the US every year since. The audiences are really mixed – it’s a celebration of diversity and I love that.”
The cameras were at the Albert Hall recording the concert for transmission Christmas 2024 on the BBC and also PBS. It will be broadcast on Radio 3 on 12 December and then on BBC Sounds. Bottom right: Tenor Zwakele Tshabalala.
This time last year I was also here at the Albert Hall also doing Messiah, a straight version with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. When Marin asked me to do this I said of course. Then she said, ah, yes, but this is something different. A gospel jazz version. She sent me some clips and I was like, whaaaaaat? Two weeks ago I was with English National Opera singing La Traviata. I’m classically trained and I sing what’s on the page. This is way way out of my comfort zone. Improvising? Scatting? It’s all new to me, but it’s as exciting as it is challenging and I’m loving how different it all is. You can still hear the original Handel, there’s just more swing and more soul to it. Zwakele Tshabalala
Ken Burton (below, at the piano) has been conducting the London Adventist Chorale since 1990. “Our members come from all over – as far afield as the Sussex coast, York and Lincolnshire. There’s 28 of the almost 96-strong choir singing here tonight ranging from 17 to 64. The youngest, Abigail, is doing her A-levels and had to get permission from her school to be at this afternoon’s rehearsal! The rest of the singers are from the BBC Symphony Chorus.
A lot of music of Black origin has a very complicated rhythm and to get the feel requires a particular approach to make it sound natural. Singers from traditional classical backgrounds sing the notes in the places where they expect them to be. They have to learn how to loosen up! And yes, normally I’m waving my arms around at the front of the choir but tonight I’m singing with them. It’s rare I get to do that – I love it and didn’t want to miss the opportunity.”
Ken Burton principal conductor of the London Adventist Chorale and soloist Vanessa Haynes practice before the performance. Below: in a break from his usual conducting Burton (middle front) is singing as part of his own choir today
Vanessa Haynes ( above, and below ) is the second of the two soloists. “I was born in Trinidad and grew up in the church singing choral and gospel before branching out into secular music and jazz. All I ever wanted to do was come to London and sing; I made my way here via India, China and Singapore, working as a jazz singer in hotels. Handel’s works were played in my house when I was young – my parents are religious, and when I was 16 or 17 a group of us discovered Quincy Jones’s version of the Messiah, but I’d not come across this before. I love it. The arrangers have done a fantastic job in making the material accessible to new audiences. I’m sure that Handel would have wanted that. But no, I’ve not sung his music before. Does this whet my appetite? What a question! Let’s see how it goes tomorrow night ... !”
Violinist Nathaniel Anderson-Frank (below) is the leader of the BBC Concert Orchestra. “I grew up in Canada with singalong versions of Messiah – the work is part of the seasonal offering there just as it is here, and I’ve played many times. Handel really knew string instruments and his music is lovely to perform. This is huge fun because of what the arrangers have retained of the original. The bones of Handel are very recognisable, the text is preserved and the melodic content is there, it feels organic, rather than like some kind of sauce that’s been slapped over the original baroque music.
Trumpeter Dave McCallum (above) has been with the BBCCO for 27 years. “Our life is hugely varied. Last week we did a show with Clare Teal and the BBC Singers, next week we’re recording Call the Midwife and just after Christmas we’re off to China with soprano Danielle de Niese. Do I have a favourite moment in the Messiah? The end! No, seriously – there are so many amazing bits. I love the quieter moments but the Hallelujah Chorus is undeniably a good romp. Handel’s template is so robust that you can do almost anything with it. And yes, the purists will probably object, but they can get lost!”
Audiences always stand for the Hallelujah Chorus, a tradition almost as old as the work itself. Legend has it that during a performance in London in the mid 1750s, King George II was so moved he stood up during this number. Everyone rose to join him and so we still all do. Others more prosaically inclined have suggested it was merely a case of pins and needles or gout that got the King to his feet, or maybe he simply wanted to stretch his legs.
“It’s one of the most popular pieces of music ever created. It achieves great effects by simple means” writes Jonathan Keates in his biography of Handel. “Like Shakespeare’s plays, Messiah’s resilience is such that it has taken a place among those works which every epoch moulds to its own fancies and desires.”
I’m of the opinion that there are two kinds of music, good and bad, like Duke Ellington always said. Sometimes classical music takes itself way too seriously. It’s wonderful to be at a concert where people can clap their hands and stand up and dance if they want. And yes, I probably will be dancing on the podium. I can’t help it in this piece! Marin Alsop
The European premiere of the Gospel Messiah is broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds on 12 December at 7.30pm and will be available on demand for 30 days.
