Distance from Knoxville: 45 minutes (about 35 miles)

Douglas Lake sits at the base of the Smokies just under an hour from Knoxville, making it an ideal day trip.

4. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park – Corbin, KY

Distance from Knoxville: 1 hour, 25 minutes (86 miles)

This stunning Kentucky state park is home to Cumberland Falls, known as “Niagara of the South.” At 68 feet tall and 125 feet wide, it’s the largest waterfall in the state. 

Cumberland Falls is also  one of only two places  on Earth where you can consistently see the rare phenomenon known as a moonbow .

Much like a rainbow, this amazing sight occurs when moonlight reflects off water droplets. 🌈

Hundreds of miles of trails surround the town, begging to be explored on foot, two wheels, or horseback.

Favorites include the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge trail and Emery Creek Falls, where you’ll cross a whopping 20 creeks!

After exploring Blue Ridge’s stunning wilderness, window shop in the adorable downtown and sample the local food scene.

7. Biltmore Estate  – Asheville, NC

Distance from Knoxville: 1 hour, 55 minutes (116 miles)

See how the other 1% lives on a day trip from Knoxville to the grand  Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.

George Vanderbilt commissioned the sprawling 250-room mansion in 1895, and today it’s still one of the most stunning pieces of architecture in the country. It’s also the largest privately-owned home in the US!

Take a self-guided tour of the estate and wander through the grounds’ lush gardens, ponds, and stables, all impeccably constructed and maintained by renowned architects and landscapers.

Another tour option is to go  kayaking on the French Broad River , where you’ll get a totally different view of the estate! 🛶

There are even shops and restaurants onsite, but a trip to the Biltmore Estate simply isn’t complete without visiting the in-house winery.

8. Roan Mountain State Park

Distance from Knoxville: 2 hours, 5 minutes (131 miles)

One of the most popular hiking, camping, and waterfall-chasing destinations in Tennessee, Roan Mountain State Park is one of the best day trips from Knoxville.

At 6,258 feet in elevation, Roan Mountain itself is also one of the highest points along the Appalachian Trail (access is just eight miles up the road at Carver’s Gap). 

The park is near the TN-NC border in the far northeastern part of the state, and has over 2,000 acres of dense forest with 12 miles of multi-use trails, as well as clear streams, rivers, and waterfalls.

Fishing is excellent here, with fly fishermen chasing rainbow and brown trout and traditional anglers going after catfish, walleye, and bass. 

Visitors can also tour some of the park’s historic structures, like the Miller Farmstead, built in 1908.

Check the  park’s calendar to register, as well as for info on other events including a guided “GeoVenture” hike that ends with participants cracking open their own geodes.

9. Nashville

Distance from Knoxville: 2 hours, 45 minutes (180 miles)

It may be best known for its live music and nightlife scenes and summer crowds, but  Nashville has plenty to do in winter too.

Start your day at the Country Music Hall of Fame, then walk over to Ryman Auditorium, AKA the “Mother Church of Country Music.”

This beautiful building housed the original Grand Ole Opry, and you can  book a self-guided tour and stand on the iconic stage.

Those who can’t get enough music nostalgia can stroll Music Row, dotted with music studios and record labels.

Of course, you can also check out the live music scene!  Visit Music City and  Now Playing Nashville keep updated calendars of all the city’s concerts and performances. 

Music City could also easily be called Food City , so be sure to set aside plenty of time to eat!

Nashville hot chicken is a must, but you’ll also find literally every other cuisine.

Hop around downtown or head to The Gulch or East Nashville, both fantastic food and entertainment hubs. East Nash, in particular, is just slightly removed from the hustle and bustle, if you’re looking for something a little lower-key. 

Be sure to walk across the pedestrian bridge for epic views of the city skyline (and great photo-ops!), and check out Centennial Park and the impressive replica Greek Parthenon.

10. Atlanta, Georgia

Distance from Knoxville: Just over 3 hours (214 miles)

It’s hot, it’s happening, and it just so happens to be within easy driving distance.

At three hours, Atlanta is the furthest day trip from Knoxville on our list, but it’s well worth it to explore one of the hippest, most historic places in the South.

We’ve chosen 6 of our favorite destinations, all within a 3 hour drive from Knoxville, where you can experience a fantastic weekend getaway, whatever the season, whatever the reason. These towns are particularly wonderful to visit in the fall with plenty of autumn color and outdoor adventures.

Each of these destinations highlights a nearby mountain town that offers great local food and shops along with terrific indoor and outdoor activities. Something for everyone. No lodging research needed or activities to plan out — it’s all covered in detail in our itineraries, saving you time and effort that you would rather spend on your weekend getaway, not planning it.

Enjoy an easy scenic hike, go apple picking or antiquing, pitch a tent, or explore the local shops along a charming Main Street.

We’ve returned several times to each of the towns listed below and provide everything you need to know: where to stay, eat, and what to see and do! All organized into detailed day-by-day plans .

1. A Weekend In Johnson City, TN

Distance from Knoxville to Johnson City, TN- 1 hour 38 min.

Johnson City , TN is a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and their logo aptly states “start your adventure here.” It’s a great hub for biking, hiking, and even exploring a fossil site. A revitalized downtown offers terrific restaurants and breweries in a quaint setting.

It’s a place where you can spend a day hiking the Appalachian Trail over numerous mountain balds with amazing 360 degree views, bike a family-friendly bike path, or tour a fossil dig site. And from all of these activities, you can easily return to town for lodging, a local craft beer, and a great meal.

Our favorite trip highlights in Johnson City include the Gray Fossil Site and Museum and the adjoining Hands On! Discovery Center , eating at White Duck Taco , and hiking one of the most beautiful sections of the AT to Round Bald and Grassy Ridge.

2. A Weekend In Chattanooga, TN

Distance from Knoxville to Chattanooga, TN- 1 hour and 42 min.

Chattanooga has no shortage of things to do for kids AND adults. This is one of the few cities you can visit where you can climb in one of the largest climbing gyms in the country, walk across one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world, visit Civil War battlefields, admire a jellyfish exhibition, and squeeze through rock boulders alongside tiny gnomes statues–all in one weekend!

In addition to a fun downtown filled with a variety of good local restaurants and breweries, Chattanooga’s outdoor opportunities earned it Outside Magazine’ s “Best Town” twice.

Our favorite trip highlights in Chattanooga included the Kid Zone at High Point Climbing , the magnificent Tennessee Aquarium , and the Incline Railway to Lookout Mountain.

3. A Weekend In Abingdon, VA

Distance from Knoxville to Abingdon, VA- 1 hour 54 min. from Knoxville

Abingdon, Va is a beautiful, quaint town in southwest Virginia. It has terrific restaurants, walkable streets, a craft brewery, and the famous Barter Theater. Catch a show at the Barter and stroll around Abingdon’s historic downtown.

Seek more adventure with a bike ride along the Virginia Creeper Trail (a 34 mile rails- to- trails pathway) or with a hike along the trails at Grayson Highlands State Park, famous for its soaring views and wild ponies. You’ll find plenty to do!

Our favorite things to do when we are visiting Abingdon, VA is to bike the Virginia Creeper Trail and visit Grayson Highlands State Park to see the wild ponies that graze there.

4. A Weekend In Brevard, NC

Distance from Knoxville to Brevard, NC- 2 hours and 20 min.

Brevard, NC is a charming mountain town filled with shops (including a great toy store), restaurants, antiques, and art galleries. It’s located just 33 miles from Asheville. It’s also home to Dupont State Forest, which offers plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails to explore.

The Hunger Games movie was filmed at Dupont where you can visit Triple Falls, the most recognizable mountain scenery in the movie.

Our girls loved the easy hiking trails to the waterfalls in Dupont State Forest , O.P. Taylors Toys downtown, breakfast at Cedar Mountain Cafe , and our cozy VRBO cabin, Summer Haven in Cedar Mountain.

5. A Weekend In Bryson City, NC

Distance from Knoxville to Bryson City, NC- 2 hours and 10 min.

Bryson City is a such a fun outdoor town and possibly the most underrated. Within a 20 minute driving radius of downtown, you have lakes to canoe, rivers to raft, and hikes to waterfalls. Plus, a brewery, a fantastic pizza place and other good restaurants, a bookstore, and an excellent outdoors store- all downtown. You just can’t beat it.

Bryson City is one of our favorite mountain towns for outdoor adventure. Our girls loved taking the train through the mountains at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad , and my husband and I couldn’t get over how clear the water is at Fontana Lake when spending the day kayaking. And rafting down the Nantahala is right up there with rollercoasters in terms of excitement for the kids.

Anthony’s Restaurant is the perfect place to end your day of adventure with delicious pizza and a cold beer!

6. A Weekend In Greenville, SC

Distance from Knoxville to Greenville, SC- 2 hours and 50 min.

Calling all foodies and outdoor lovers! Greenville, SC has been on the trendy radar for some time, appearing in multiple travel magazines and blogs for its vibrant food scene and beautiful use of the riverfront downtown. Take a hike or bike the Swamp Rabbit Trail , a 20 mile paved bike trail running through downtown and leading to fun food stops along the way.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Day Trip from Knoxville

Knoxville is a great base for exploring Great Smoky Mountains National Park as it’s only a 45-minute to 1-hour drive away, depending on which park entrance you choose! Many visitors often dedicate more than one day to visiting the park, especially considering there is so much else to do in the surrounding areas of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge (hello Dollywood!). However, if you’re short on time, you can easily do a Great Smoky Mountains day trip from Knoxville and see some cool sights.

Great Smoky Mountains Facts

Did you know that Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most-visited National Park in the U.S.? I had no idea until I started doing research for our trip. In 2022, there were nearly 13 million visitors to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, followed by Grand Canyon National Park at just under 5 million. That’s a huge difference!

It’s really no surprise to me that this is the most-visited National Park in U.S. The landscape of The Smokies is absolutely beautiful! There is plenty to do for outdoor enthusiasts in the way of hiking, along with interesting historical points of interest and tons of beautiful scenery for those taking a leisurely drive.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park also spans across two states (Tennessee and North Carolina), which means extra points of entry to the park.

Are the Smoky Mountains actually smoky?

The iconic “smoke” of the smokies is actually a fog that settles throughout the mountains from the vegetation. We visited on a clear day, but we could still see some of that “smoke” settling in some of the valleys!

Park Entrance Fee

Entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is FREE! However, if you plan on parking anywhere inside the park, as of March 1, 2023, you’ll need to pay $5 for a daily parking pass . If you’re just driving through or not planning on parking anywhere for more than 15 minutes, parking tags are not required. On Fee Free Days , visitors do not need to purchase a parking pass.

Day Trip Itinerary Summary

This day trip itinerary focuses mostly on enjoying the sights via car due to having limited time. There is a little bit of “hiking” involved at Clingman’s Dome on a paved (but steep) path, but otherwise, we just enjoyed the views from our car window.

Below is a summary of all the stops from our Great Smoky Mountains National Park day trip itinerary:

• Drive from Knoxville to Clingman’s Dome – the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains
• Hike to the Clingman’s Dome observation tower
• Quick stop at the Sugarlands Visitor Center
• Lunch at Tennessee Jed’s in Gatlinburg

Drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

Drive from Knoxville to Clingman’s Dome

Start your Great Smoky Mountains day trip off with a drive from Knoxville up to Clingman’s Dome , which is the highest point in the Smokies! Depending on traffic and stops at scenic lookouts along the way, plan for about two hours to get from Downtown Knoxville to the Clingman’s Dome parking area.

Driving from Knoxville, we entered the park via the Gatlinburg Bypass rather than driving through Gatlinburg itself. Make sure you stop at the pullout once you get into the park to snap a pic with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park sign ! Coordinates are roughly here .

Please note that the road to Clingman’s Dome is closed from December 1 through March 31, so this is best done in the late spring, summer or fall seasons.

On the drive up to Clingman’s Dome, there are a few scenic points to pull over at (safely in designated pullout areas) where you can get some picturesque views! Some points of interest to note are the Ben Morton Overlook and the Chimney Tops Overlook .

Hike to the Clingman’s Dome Observation Tower

If you are physically able, I highly recommend the hike up to the Clingman’s Dome Observation Tower. Clingman’s Dome is located right on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, so you’ll be straddling two states at once! From the observation tower, you’ll be able to see views of the Smokies stretching across both states!

From the Clingman’s Dome parking lot, it’s about a half mile hike up to the observation tower . Don’t let that half mile number fool you. The hike is pretty steep most of the way! The air is also thinner due to elevation, so I advise you to take it very slow. Thankfully, the path up to the tower is completely paved. There are also plenty of benches and trees to lean on for a rest break along the way.

We ended up unintentionally visiting on Columbus Day so it was pretty crowded, but we saw all sorts of people completing the hike – from families with children to senior adults!

Note : Make sure you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated while you are on the trail, and dress in layers!

Visit the Sugarlands Visitor Center

From Clingman’s Dome, head back down towards Gatlinburg and make a stop at the Sugarlands Visitor Center. They’ve got some great history on the local flora and fauna, and if you have extra time, you can visit Cataract Falls nearby.

This is also a great spot to purchase souvenirs. I’m a magnet collector, so I picked one up here for my magnet board at home.

Have Lunch in Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg is a destination on its own that you could easily spend a few days at. However, if you just want a little taste of this wildly quirky place, make a plan to stop here for lunch and take a stroll through town to check out some of the shops.

Do note that parking in Gatlinburg is pretty pricey anywhere you look. You’re probably looking at spending around $20 for parking, so take that into consideration when it comes to your budget.

For lunch, we opted for sandwiches at Tennessee Jed’s , which is a highly rated restaurant in Gatlinburg. Luckily for us, there was no wait even on a busy holiday (I think we missed the lunch rush). We were even able to find a seat with some shade! We got the Cuban and Reuben sandwiches, which were both hearty and filling. I highly recommend the Reuben !

If you have extra time, check out one of the local distilleries in town before heading to the last part of the trip!

Since we still had some time left in our day, we decided to drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a 5.5 mile drive that takes you through a dense forest and past a few well-preserved historic buildings.

There are also several popular waterfall hikes along the Nature Trail, such as Rainbow Falls and Grotto Falls. However, you’ll need to be sure to allot extra time on your itinerary if you plan to complete any hikes.

If you’re just doing the drive with minimal stops at some of the historic sites, plan for about an hour to an hour and a half for the drive with a few stops to get out and explore. Also, the speed limit on this mostly one-lane road is 10 mph , so make sure your driver has a lot of patience!

Note: The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is closed for winter from late November through early April, so keep that in mind for your trip.

Bud Ogle Cabin

My favorite stop along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail was the Noah “Bud” Ogle cabin property. The old cabins looked pretty cool amongst the early fall leaves when we visited in mid October!

Noah “Bud” Ogle was a Tennessee farmer in the late 1800’s who farmed corn and apples. There are actually two cabins on the property, with the smaller second cabin being built to accommodate Bud Ogle’s family, which included his wife and eight children.

For me not being a huge history buff, I still think it’s cool to see how earlier settlers lived and learn about how they survived.

Head Back to Knoxville!

And with that, it’s time to head back to Knoxville! This itinerary really is the perfect little introduction to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Truthfully, you really do need more than one day to explore the park. If we had more time, I would have loved to do the Cades Cove Loop (entering at the Townsend park entrance) and also focus on doing some of the easier hikes. But I will save those for next time!

Smokies Day Trip Packing List

Before you go, make sure you have a list of items to pack for your day trip, especially for the Clingman’s Dome hike. Here are some things to include:

• Water! Make sure you have plenty of water for each person for the hike up to the Clingman’s Dome observation tower.
• Backpack to carry your water and other belongings
• Camera or phone to take some great pics
• Sunglasses are much needed on a sunny day
• Comfortable walking shoes (that hike up to Clingman’s Dome is no joke)
• Dramamine for car sickness for the twists and turns on the drive

Whether you are skipping town to see new sights or avoid the madness of game day , these locations are sure to impress. It’s easy to pick up  your rental car  downtown or at the airport and return to your hotel in the evening. 

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Distance from Knoxville: 2 hours

Chattanooga , Tennessee is an easy day trip down the highway from Knoxville. With countless options for family fun like Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Tennessee Aquarium , or the Incline Railway this destination can be covered in a day or an extended stay.

For those who want to skip the attractions, the city is easily walkable and no visit is complete without a stroll along the Riverwalk or over the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge. Chattanooga is also a destination for numerous events and festivals throughout the year; they even host the Ironman!

Johnson City, Tennessee

Johnson City, much like Asheville , is an adventure lover’s dream. With whitewater rafting on the Nolichucky, hiking along the balds at nearby Roan Mountain, or fly fishing at some of the south’s most pristine riffles, Johnson City is not to be missed.

The historic downtown has a thriving art scene, breweries are popping up daily, and East Tennessee State University attracts a young and funky population. If you visit in season be sure to catch the Johnson City Cardinals play a game.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville found a place on everyone’s radar when it landed the coveted title of “ Beer City USA ” back in 2009. Since then, visitors from across the country have ventured to this gem in the Blue Ridge Mountains to sample some brews, take in the scenery, and enjoy a thriving culinary scene.

Music festivals abound and a fantastic climate makes this day trip worthy any day of the year. Take a drive along the historic Blue Ridge Parkway and be sure to save time for a hike or stroll.

• 6 Of The Most Charming Small Towns To Visit In Tennessee

While well known for its rich cultural heritage (hello Nashville !) and the stunning natural beauty of places like the Great Smoky Mountains , Tennessee also offers adventurous travelers no end of attractive small towns to visit. The best of them provide a little bit of everything visitors look for in a destination and boast a compelling blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural richness that reveal plenty about the “Volunteer State” and its citizens. From the storytelling capital of the USA , Jonesborough, to the tranquil Smokies retreat of Townsend, as well as the lakeside allure of Dandridge and the rich forests surrounding Tellico Plains, these six most charming small towns in Tennessee offer no end of fun things to do.

Rogersville

Located in northern Tennessee , Rogersville boasts one of the most charming downtown districts in the South. Part of the National Register of Historic Places , Rogersville Historic District is a delightful area to explore on foot, its layout unchanged since it was laid out around 1786. Notable buildings include the Hawkins County Courthouse, dating from 1836, and Overton Lodge, constructed in 1840. Just outside the downtown core, the Swift Museum is dedicated to the town's rich history and offers interesting insights into local heritage, while the Local Artists Gallery showcases the work of regional creatives.

Events like the Heritage Days celebration, organized by the Rogersville Heritage Association, offer a good excuse to visit. Held over three days each October, this fun festival features craft vendors, live music, and tasty local foods to enjoy. For a truly memorable visit, book a night or two at the historic Hale Springs Inn, built in 1824 and still going strong.

Tellico Plains

Its location off the I-75 between Knoxville and Chattanooga makes Tellico Plains an ideal place to visit for a day trip or a stop-over on a longer road trip. The big draw here is the town’s stunning Appalachian wilderness setting, as well as its proximity to Cherokee National Forest , a 650,000-acre site that offers fun hiking, fishing, and camping experiences. Be sure to include a visit to Bald River Falls on your itinerary; this spectacular cascading waterfall is a favorite spot for photographers, especially during the autumn months.

Tellico Plains is also where you can pick up one of Tennessee’s most popular scenic drives, the Cherohala Skyway. Stretching for 43 miles, this National Scenic Byway starts in Tellico Plains and winds its way through the Smoky Mountains to Robbinsville, North Carolina, with plenty of scenic viewpoints along the way. Another must-visit is the Charles Hall Museum with its displays and artifacts relating to Appalachian history.

It’s for good reason that Townsend is known as "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies." Located mid-way between Gatlinburg and Maryville, this charming Appalachian community is a lot less commercial than its neighbors, making it an ideal base from which to explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park … without the crowds. A highlight of a visit is the Tuckaleechee Caverns with its impressive underground waterfall (guided tours are available). Hiking is popular here, too, with numerous routes accessible from the town, along with bike and horse riding trails.

The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum is another must-visit. Highlights here include exhibits about the railways and logging that opened the region up to settlement, including a restored locomotive and logging caboose.

Jonesborough

Tucked away in the north of Tennessee, close to the state border with Virginia , Jonesborough’s location close to the junction of the I-81 and I-26 highways means this charming town is easy to get to. Founded in 1779 before Tennessee was even a state (that event occurred 25 years later), Jonesborough's rich heritage is visible in its well-preserved architecture. A highlight is Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum, housed in the town's oldest commercial building and providing a fascinating glimpse into life in the late 1700s through artifacts and exhibitions.

Jonesborough is also celebrated as the "Storytelling Capital of the World" as it’s home to the International Storytelling Center. In addition to hosting the annual National Storytelling Festival, which draws visitors and storytellers from across the globe, this first-rate cultural facility also offers year-round programs to preserve and advance the art of storytelling.

Dandridge is located just 30 miles east of Knoxville on the shores of Douglas Lake. Tennessee's second oldest town (Jonesborough’s the oldest) was founded in 1783 and is notable as the only town in the USA named after George Washington ’s wife, Martha Dandridge Washington. One of the prettiest and best-preserved main streets in the South , it’s great to explore on foot, especially if you include landmarks like the Jefferson County Courthouse, an attractive building constructed in 1845, on your walking tour.

The man-made Douglas Lake is another big draw and is popular for boating, fishing, and swimming, as well as for enjoying a lakeside picnic or family outing. A quirky attraction that’s fun to check out, Bush's Visitor Center features exhibits relating to North America ’s best-selling baked beans.

Leipers Fork

Although more a village than a town -its population is only about 600 people - Leiper's Fork is well worth including on any Tennessee travel itinerary. Just 26 miles southwest of downtown Nashville , this often-overlooked community offers a memorable slice of authentic Southern life. Highlights include its quaint collection of unique shops and galleries, including the Leiper’s Creek Gallery with its displays of work by local artists. Although a short drive outside the village, Leiper's Fork Distillery offers a deep dive into the craft of Tennessee whiskey making with guided tours, sampling, and shopping.

Other fun things to do in Leipers Fork include taking in a show, a movie, or even a c concert at the famous Lawnchair Theater or using the village as a springboard to explore the scenic beauty of Middle Tennessee.

Take a stroll down Union Avenue, the main drag, and you’ll be treated to performances by talented locals. If you want to pick up some souvenirs, there are a lot of boutiques and specialty shops where you can buy unique, handcrafted items made by local artists. 

The site of the 1982 World’s Fair, World’s Fair Park, is a great place to visit and learn about the fair’s significance. Neyland Stadium and Volunteer Landing

Sports fans should check out Neyland Stadium, the home of the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team. If you happen to be in town on a game day, you don’t want to miss the tailgating and game excitement in this packed, loud stadium.

A lot of people visit Volunteer Landing when they’re in downtown Knoxville. A marina, a park, and several restaurants can all be found at this great spot, which is located on a picturesque riverbank. If you’re interested in Knoxville’s past, you should check out the Blount Mansion, a historic home in the city’s heart. In addition to being one of the oldest buildings in Tennessee, this 1792 mansion is also historically significant.

Blount Mansion is known as “ The Birthplace of Tennessee ”. It served as the home to U.S. Constitution signer, William S. Blount

Where To Stay

Before spending the day in Knoxville, here are some ideas for where to stay. Knoxville isn’t a huge city, and most of it is close to the interstate for easy access to hotels, including downtown.

Consider staying downtown. In this area, there’s a wide selection of hotels, as well as some of the city’s best restaurants and nightlife. 

One of our favorite hotels is the Hyatt Place Knoxville Downtown , which is one of the nicest Hyatt Places we have stayed at. It has a reasonable price, and a great location on South Gay Street, close to restaurants.

Another great local option and one of our favorites is The Tennessean Personal Luxury Hotel .

Here are some other great downtown area hotels and VRBOs (for longer-term stays). Our suggestion would be to spend a night or two in Knoxville and more time in the scenic areas of Gatlinburg, Townsend, or Pigeon Forge.

If you’re not attached to staying downtown Knoxville, there are some unique and amazing places to stay within a short drive of Knoxville.

F rom small towns and state parks to some of the most exciting cities in the South, here are 20 of the best places to visit in Tennessee.

If you’re looking at a map of the entire United States, Tennessee is easily one of the most recognizable states. Shaped like an irregular parallelogram, it’s nearly four times long as it is wide — measuring around 420 miles from east to west and 120 miles from north to south. What the two-dimensional view doesn’t tell you, however, is that its borders contain a seemingly endless number of variations in both scenery and culture. “Tennessee is a perfect mix of urban and rural, casual yet sophisticated with easy proximity to the great outdoors,” explains Cassidee Dabney, executive chef of The Barn at Blackberry Farm . “Throw in brilliant musical and cultural heritage, fantastic high and low culinary destinations, and rich and diverse geography, and you have a state that will keep you entertained and engaged.”

Its largest cities — Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga — are on many travelers’ radars, but a true understanding of Tennessee can only be discovered through a more nuanced itinerary. “I think visitors here should get off the interstate to explore and go through small towns. Otherwise, you miss the local places that give this state so much great color and character,” says Tandy Wilson, chef and owner of City House , Nashville. 

To ensure your next trip to the Volunteer State is filled with well-rounded experiences and amazing points of interest, we tapped a few locals for advice on the best places to visit in Tennessee. Read on to see which cities, towns, and sights made the cut.

There’s no doubt Music City, suggested by several of our experts, tops the list. As you plan your trip, be sure to keep in mind some of Wilson’s favorite places to eat. He recommends the mac and cheese at Silver Sands Cafe — “I want real Southern mac and cheese, and this is the only place I know to get it” — the giant prawns and fried squid at Red Perch , and the nachos and wings at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint .

While Nashville has plenty to offer, there’s one part of the city you absolutely can’t miss: Broadway. “First-timers have to go honky-tonking on Broadway. Hit up Robert’s Western World for cold beers, fried bologna sandwiches, and country music,” says Dabney. David Mishkin, executive property manager at Southall Farm & Inn , also shares this is a crucial addition to your Nashville visit: “There's so much to see, eat, and experience. Country music is everywhere, and the performances are all high quality. It's difficult to not enjoy yourself when being immersed in the energy and action.”

“When I think about Memphis, I think about music, art, and beautiful historical architecture,” says Stephanie King , an artist based in the state’s southwesternmost city. This creative side of Memphis can be found in many areas, but King shares that The Memphian Hotel is a good place to start. “To me, The Memphian embodies so many aspects of Memphis in the most inspired, welcoming way. It feels as if the intention when designing the environment was to create pure magic. There is local art lining the walls, layers of colors and texture, whimsy and sophistication all rolled into a comfortable, home-like atmosphere,” she says.

The storied home of Elvis Presley, Graceland is located 12 minutes from downtown Memphis. A destination in and of itself, the historic property includes the King of Rock and Roll’s mansion, gardens, cars, and The Guest House at Graceland, where music fans can stay overnight to experience the resort’s dedication to luxury and Southern hospitality.

Make your way to Eastern Tennessee to cheer on the Vols in Knoxville. Or, if you’re not a sports fan, spend your day exploring the city. “Downtown Knoxville is a great area to park and walk around Market Square and the Old City. There’s a great farmers’ market on Saturdays in the warmer months that’s a must-visit,” says Dabney. Her ideal visit to the Cradle of Country Music includes stops at Cruze Farm , J.C Holdway , Yassin’s Falafel , and a spirit tasting at PostModern Spirits Distillery .

Leiper’s Fork

You’ll need to drive 45 minutes southwest of Nashville to find Leiper’s Fork, one of the most charming small towns in Tennessee . According to Mishkin, it’s a “charming place to grab some barbecue, do some antique shopping, and enjoy a delicious drink at the distillery.” Like many places in the state, it has a relationship with music. If that’s up your alley, check out Fox & Locke , which Miskin says is a “well-known place for people to come together for food, drinks, and live music.”

Chattanooga.

Of all the river cities in the South, Chattanooga is one of the best. “You have to visit Rock City and Ruby Falls if you’re in the area, and the art museum is great,” says Dabney, referring to the Hunter Museum of American Art in the Bluff View Art District. In between outdoor activities and cultural sights, you’ll want to fill up with fried chicken and tamales at Champy’s and wash them down with cocktails at The Rosecomb .

South Cumberland State Park

With 56 state parks, Tennessee is the perfect destination for those who find peace and happiness among the trees and fresh air. South Cumberland State Park is about an hour from Chattanooga, and it’s where you’ll find the Fiery Gizzard Trail. “It’s near Beersheba Springs and Old Stone Fort outside of McMinnville, and it’s just full of natural beauty. To tackle this hike, you need to be able to walk a few miles, but it’s one we take the kids on,” says Wilson.

Ocoee River

“Ocoee River Area is my favorite area in Tennessee,” says King. “You can whitewater raft, kayak, hike, camp, [and] bike.” Flowing northwestward through the Appalachian Mountains, the river can be easily accessed from Chattanooga. Many people choose to take advantage of the rafting, but the area can also be explored by driving the Ocoee Scenic Byway .

Walland might ring a bell because of its association with Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain . “You can hit Blackberry Farm for a high-end luxury experience with trails, mountain biking, a James Beard award-winning restaurant, spa, farm animals, workshops, and concerts,” says King. Dabney also shares her suggestions for the Mountain, saying, “You can’t go wrong with a guided hike to Leo The Enlightened (a large sculpture from Danish artist Thomas Dambo that overlooks the valley), sound bathing, spending an afternoon behind the wheel of a Lexus tacking the Off Road Adventure, and throwing clay at the art studio.”

Fall Creek Falls State Park

“ Fall Creek Falls State Park is another unbelievable spot for camping, biking, and hiking,” says King. Covering 30,638 acres, it’s one of the largest state parks in Tennessee. Along with its size, it has a few other features that set it apart, including interesting geological formations (caves and gorges) and scenic waterfalls.

It’s easy to overlook Franklin in favor of its neighbor to the north, Nashville, but travelers would be remiss to not spend at least an afternoon in this historic community. “Nothing beats walking down this picture-perfect Main Street on a beautiful day. With curated shops and friendly faces everywhere, we often spend our days wandering through town with the family,” says Mishkin. For a longer trip, stay overnight at the gorgeous Southfall Farm & Inn , which opened in late 2022.

Cummins Falls State Park

“ Cummins Falls is a great waterfall to visit, and it’s a great short hike in the summer,” says Wilson. Just make sure to bring your swimsuit along with your hiking clothes to the 306-acre park. “It’s just gorgeous here – it’s more socially recreational and a lot of fun and a cool place to swim.”

A small city close to Knoxville, Maryville is an excellent choice if you love all things outdoors. “Book a room at RT Lodge , a charming lodge tucked away behind Maryville College. You'll feel secluded while in the center of town, and they have a great restaurant and a gorgeous bar called The Morningside,” says Dabney. “With RT as your base camp, take a quick drive to the Great Smoky Mountains.”

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

One of the most-visited national parks in the United States, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is notable for its lush forests, wildflowers, rivers, streams, waterfalls, and incredible hikes. “My favorite hike in the Smokies is Indian Flat Falls . It's about 6 miles and pretty moderate with scenic waterfalls, plus you can turn around at any point,” says Dabney.

Gatlinburg maintains the title of “gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park,” so there’s a good chance your hiking trip will start here. There are three park entrances right in town, and Mishkin says the “immersion within nature is worthy of the trip.” “The history contained within remnants around the parks also shows how people lived hundreds of years ago,” he adds.

Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge has long been synonymous with Dollywood and Dolly Parton — whom King calls “an American icon and a Tennessee favorite” — and it’s filled with activities for the whole family, whether you’re interested in the theme park, shopping, or hiking in the Smoky Mountains. The Caverns

“The Caverns is another East Tennessee spot that offers great concerts, especially Bluegrass. There is one indoor, underground cave venue and another outdoor amphitheater,” says King. You can view upcoming shows online as you begin to plot out your trip. And don’t forget to bring your hiking boots, too. “Around The Caverns, there are trails, rock climbing, waterfalls, and stunning overlooks.”

Bristol, Tennessee is the twin city of Bristol, Virginia. Both states even claim the main street, aptly named State Street, as their own — allowing you to stand in two states at once. No matter if you’re staying on the Virginia side or the Tennessee side, there are a few important things to check off your bucket list, including snapping a photo with the iconic Bristol sign , checking out the Bristol Motor Speedway , and visiting the Birthplace of Country Music Museum .

Reelfoot Lake State Park

King notes that Reelfoot Lake State Park in Northwest Tennessee is “home to the most beautiful Cypress trees” and notable for its birdwatching opportunities with “more than 270 species of birds.” It’s also totally different than other parks in the state. The lake itself is a flooded forest, and the Cypress trees King mentioned rise above the water to set a majestic scene.

Knoxville’s first home, James White’s Fort was built in 1786 by James White, the founder of Knoxville. He enclosed the log cabin and other structures. Take a tour to learn the full history and see the many structures including the main house and kitchen, the well, smokehouse, guesthouse and blacksmith shop where you can see local blacksmith demonstrations. 

Knoxville Museum of Art

Spend a slow morning at Knoxville Museum of Art . The free museum is beautiful during the morning hours (open beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays) as light streams into the giant windows. Marvel at the artwork on display from photography to paintings, glassworks and even miniature diorama groups in the permanent collection, Thorne Rooms. What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
