Finding the best walking shoes for travel can be tough. You want something comfortable enough to get you through a full day of wandering around, but not so comfortable that it screams “I'm a tourist!” And since nobody wants to tote around a bag (checked or otherwise) filled with shoes, the ones that do make the packing list cut need to be versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.

Knowing that a bad pair of shoes can ruin an otherwise lovely travel day, we asked Condé Nast Traveler writers and editors (as well as shopping writers from other Condé Nast titles) to share their tried-and-true kicks, so you don't have to take a gamble on whether they'll actually be comfortable or not. Whether you're looking for sneakers , boots , flats , or sandals , we have recommendations for you. Below, more than 30 of our favorite high-quality, easy-to-pack walking shoes for travel—all cushy, supportive, and versatile—that will take you just about anywhere. Scroll through to see all of our favorite walking shoes, or jump straight to the category you're looking for below.

Susie Plotkin, who works on Condé Nast's global email team, calls these platform boots “the perfect shoe.” She's had them for about three years, and has taken them everywhere. “My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, and they’re the shoe I wear to sightsee around Zurich. I've spent 12 hours walking around Venice in them, and regularly stomp all around Brooklyn in them. They’re a little heavy but super comfortable and can slide on and off so easily.”

A cold-weather favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , these Blundstone boots required no break-in time, and are a great all-purpose boot for fall or winter trips. The pull tabs make them easy to get back on, the shock absorption keeps your feet feeling good even after a few hours on the move, and the double stitching, durable leather, and tough outsole mean you won't be replacing them a few trips later.

Former Traveler editor Meredith Carey wears these waterproof Blondo boots almost all winter long, and brings them along on any fall and winter trips. “They look and feel like leather but I can wear them in snow and rain—I don't have to worry about my shoes surviving when I'm tromping around day-to-day in New York or a new city,” she says. They come in a host of color options, from black to brown leather to snakeskin.

Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: They're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers. Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

New Balance sneakers have made a major comeback. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about two years now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston , to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish—they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers , these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition—so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole—both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true—but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples. I just retired mine after years of use, but I’m sure I’ll buy another at some point.” To clean, Menon recommends a combination of mild dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

The Adonis is a newer style for Naot—a podiatrist-approved footwear brand —that dropped earlier this year. The sock-style slip-on is made with a removable cork and latex footbed that promises all-day comfort. Flager is a fan of the easy-to-match white and light pink style, and recommends them for city trips. (Pro tip: Bombas's cushioned no-show socks are just the right size to wear underneath.)

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveler editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these—they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to an impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colorways and just as many limited-edition hues. Like all of the brand's shoes, they are machine washable, which means lighter colors are easy to keep looking new.

Recommended by Glamour and Teen Vogue commerce director Brie Schwartz , this playful spin on the classic Converse low-top will add a bit of fun to your travel day. The sneakers are relatively lightweight thanks to the canvas upper, and the vulcanized rubber sole helps with traction.

Look down in an exercise class or marathon and you're bound to see, at minimum, a few pairs of Hokas around you. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , is partial to the brand's Kawana style: “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “I did a lot of walking during this trip and was not prepared for the Texas heat. (At one point my partner and I had to step into an H&M to cool off.) Luckily, my sneaks were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveler contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability, and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave—I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

Former Traveler editor Scott Bay is a fan of this Arc'teryx hiker : “To me, it's technical enough to tackle any moderate hike, while being super comfortable all day, and I have been known to wear them to nice restaurants or shows.” Other perks: They last forever and you can throw them in the wash when they're in need of a polish.

Recommended by Calle, these On sneakers boast the brand's biggest layer of CloudTec ever for top-tier cushioning and energy return, as well as reduced muscle fatigue. “I’m not a runner by any means but I like to do a steady three-mile jog around Liberty State Park when the mood strikes,” Calle says. “I’ve been using old Nike sneakers for the last few years, but gave On shoes a try last year, and let me tell you, I didn’t know my feet could feel so much relief while running. I love that the rocker bottoms feel like they give me an extra push during my jog. I’m never going back to regular minimalist sneakers.”

Allbirds Tree Dashers

Allbirds' sneakers are known for being comfortable, but the Tree Dashers—the brand's first pair made specifically for runners—ups the ante. The thick sole will cushion your feet on the longest of days spent exploring, and if you are someone who jogs on vacation, you can pack one less pair of shoes to do so.

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world—more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago—Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a recent trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably, and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on—I can see why they're so beloved.” Jake Smith , a commerce writer for Glamour , is a big fan of the shoe, too: “I've worn them for three years, and while they're nice for hiking, I really love them as walking shoes,” he says.

Emma McDonald, who works on the digital marketing team for Condé Nast, recommends these recovery shoes from Kane. “I have had them for about six months and use them at my standing desk all day long, and while running errands.” The cushiony shoe is made out of Brazilian sugarcane, with raised footbed nodes that are designed to activate blood flow in key pressure points on the sole of your foot.

Malia Griggs , Glamour 's commerce editor, is a big fan of these SeaeVees clogs. “I thought they’d just be rain boots , but I end up wearing them all the time because they’re so easy to slip on, are comfy, and perfect for any sort of drizzly days when I’m out and about in the city,” she says. “This summer, I spent a week in the North Carolina mountains and brought them with me since they’re good plane shoes (easy on and off at security!) and also durable and waterproof enough for walks on little trails. I appreciate that they have enough of a backing to not slide all the way off when I’m walking.”

Another favorite of Schwartz, these leather lug loafers are fairly light at just half a pound each, with a comfortably low heel height of 1.1 inches. Basic black goes with everything, but for a pop of color, order them in red or emerald green.

These colorful Sabah slip-ons come highly recommended by articles director Lale Arikoglu , who calls them “a permanent fixture on my packing list.” They come in dozens of colors, in either a butter soft leather or suede, and are hand stitched by one of the 10 shoemakers who comprise the Sabah Workshop in Gaziantep. “The more I wear them, the better they fit, molding to my feet like a glove—almost as if they were designed just for me,” she says.

This black and white Cole Hahn shoe toes the line between loafer and sneaker perfectly—it's nice enough to wear into the office after hopping off a plane, but casual (and comfortable) enough to wear during a day of sightseeing. If you own enough basic black, you can get the pair with an off-white, gold, or silver leather top, too. Either way, the shoe is made for long days: There's traction on the bottom to keep you from slipping on smooth museum floors, footbeds meant to mold to your feet, and cushioned padding on the heel to prevent rubbing.

Kenny has slipped on these loafers to head to work, go out to dinner—in general, any situation where she wants to look polished but doesn't necessarily want to put on a heel. Made with a soft, merino wool upper, they come in onyx black, teak herringbone, or ivory, shown above, and have a chunky 1.5-inch sole. Best of all, they are fully machine washable.

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveler editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically molds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every color under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions—light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin . The trail sandals, which Flager recommends, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Sandal, and Apparel

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: The Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

best european travel shoes

Another favorite of Kenny's, these Rothy's slides are a welcome update to some of the brand's previous iterations of sandals, which, while cute, offered little when it came to support. “When I put these new slides on from Rothy’s, I immediately knew they will be my go-to summer sandal for beach excursions and vacation days that require a decent amount of walking while also looking put together,” Kenny says. “A durable yet comfortable sandal is always tricky to find, but these have a pretty thick sole and give a lot more support than the flat pair of flip flops I’m always tempted to pack. I went for the neutral beige color that I know will match any midi dress or linen pants I pack this summer.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Sandal, Accessories, Accessory, and Belt

Another one of Spurrell's go-to's , these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the Trail sandals, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell has worn them on bike rides, long walks, beach days, and out to dinner in New York—proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

Birdies Starling flat

It can be nice to have a good pair of flats tucked away in your suitcase for a fancy dinner or evening stroll after a long day in sneakers, especially given how easy they are to pack. We like Birdies' The Starling flats, meant to be a modern take on the classic smoking slipper. They're built to last, and to keep your feet comfortable: Inside, there's seven-layer cushioned footbed with elevated arch support, plus a little extra cushion in the heel to prevent it from rubbing. Order them in suede, faux fur, or velvet fabrics.

best european travel shoes

While Rothy's makes a classic ballet flat , too, we love the more sophisticated look of the Point Flat. Available in more than a dozen colors from lollipop red to boysenberry and dark emerald, there's a hue for every kind of traveler and outfit. All of Rothy's shoes are made out of recycled plastic, and cut using the same technology as Suav, meaning there's less waste throughout production. The shoes were recently redesigned to be even more comfortable thanks to a cushier insole and more spacious toebox.

A trip to Europe presents the ultimate shoe-packing dilemma—you want to look stylish (and not out of place in running shoes), but you know you’re going to be walking for miles every day on hard sidewalks and cobblestones. Striking the perfect balance between fashion and comfort is tricky. Luckily, these twelve shoes will keep you looking your best while keeping aching feet at bay.

The Best Shoes to Wear in Europe This Season

These are the best shoes to wear in Europe because they not only are stylish but also stand up to days of nonstop walking.

Born Julianne

Multiple angles of the Born Julianne shoes in light tan

I am skeptical of folding flats because while they are great for packing, they rarely are comfortable for walking. The Born Julianne’s completely surprised me—they are not only a stow-and-go flat that folds neatly into a bag for packing, but they offered a high level of support and padding. Born uses a patented handcrafted construction method that sews together the entire shoe at once, which eliminates rigidity and unnecessary seams that rub, and I could definitely tell the difference. The footbed is very cushioned as well, so I didn’t have problems wearing these on hard surfaces. The Julianne’s are hands-down my new favorite ballet flats—they didn’t cause blisters or foot fatigue and the tan color matched everything. I packed these and wore them when I was transitioning from sightseeing to dinner, and they worked wonderfully and looked great.

Adidas Men’s Originals NMD_R2 Sneakers

best european travel shoes

Adidas’ sneakers have exploded in popularity among fashionistas—you’ll see stylish locals rocking these throughout Europe. The NMD_R2 style is part of Adidas’ street-style focus, and the design draws inspiration from vintage runners, lending these sneakers an ultra-cool look. In addition to the fashion, you’ll get all of Adidas’ performance technology to keep you comfortable—including a Primeknit upper (which is super light and won’t cause blisters), trademarked boost energy-returning properties, and great arch support.

Shoes That Are Good for Your Feet, According to Doctors

Ilse Jacobsen Tulip Perforated Slip-on Sneaker

Two angles of the Ilse Jacobsen Tulip Perforated Slip-on Sneaker in deep blue

Ilse Jacobsen’s Tulip Perforated Sneaker is a great compromise between a full-on sneaker and a slip-on flat. The shoe goes on and off easily (it’s perfect for airport security), but still offers plenty of support and padding on the bottom. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns.

Allbirds Wool Runners

Multiple angles of the Allbirds Wool Runners in off white

I’ve written diatribes in the past against wearing white sneakers, but now I have to eat my words, because I rocked Allbirds’ white Wool Runners all over the streets of New York City and Switzerland on recent trips. Made from a breathable merino wool (I wore them on 80-degree days and they didn’t make me hot), these unisex shoes are designed to be worn without socks and look miles different from a regular white workout shoe. The shoes are lightweight and fairly crushable, so they pack easily—plus, they are machine-washable, which is a huge bonus when you’re wearing white. I can’t overstate how comfortable these are right out of the box—and they’re pretty stylish for a sneaker.

Aldo Quarta

Multiple angles of the Aldo Quarta in pastel pink

Aldo’s Quarta work with dresses and pants for either a dressy or casual look, but still pull their weight in the comfort department, making them ideal shoes to wear in Europe. They slip on and off easily at security.

Skechers Ultra Flex Harmonious

Multiple angles of the Skechers Ultra Flex Harmonious in black

Knitted shoes have rapidly become my favorites for packing—they weigh almost nothing, plus they squish down easily to save suitcase space. Knitted uppers rarely irritate my feet or cause blisters compared to other more traditional shoe materials, and they offer more ventilation. One particularly comfy option is the Harmonious shoe from Skechers . They’re lightweight, they’re well cushioned, and they come in more than half a dozen colors. If you’re looking for shoes to wear in Europe, you can’t go wrong with knitted ones.

Nisolo Everyday Sneaker

Close up of woman wearing the Nisolo Everyday Sneaker in cream (left) and a close up of a pair of Nisolo Everyday Sneaker in cream (right)

Nisolo’s handmade Everyday Sneakers are definitely some of the most stylish sneakers that I own, thanks to details like rose gold eyelets and waxed cotton laces. Aside from being beautiful, the Everydays offer comfort and stability in the form of Vibram soles—making these the perfect stylish walking shoes for Europe.

Rockport Avya Washable Sneaker

Two angles of the Rockport Avya Washable Sneaker in white

Rockport takes shock absorption technology, knitted fabrics, and casual style, and combines them into the Avya sneaker . It has a great flexible sole with shock absorption at the heel, as well as a patented Ortholite foam footbed that cushions every step you take. These sneakers are machine washable, so they will stay looking and smelling fresh through your whole trip.

The 7 Best White Sneakers for Travel

Ecco Soft 7

Multiple angles of the Ecco Soft 7 in golden tan

Athleisure sneakers are super on-trend right now, and Ecco’s Soft 7 works the style perfectly. It has a classic, basic look that goes with pretty much any outfit, and is packed with comfort features like a removable leather inlay sole, the Ecco Comfort Fiber System (which fights moisture and odors), an anatomical shape that molds to your foot, and long laces to help you get the perfect fit.

M. Gemi Palestra Uomo

Multiple angles of the M. Gemi Palestra Uomo in white

If you think all sneakers are unstylish, you might reconsider after seeing M. Gemi’s Palestra Uomo . These minimalist leather sneakers look good, are built to last, and feel comfortable right out of the box.

Bombas Socks

Close up of feet wearing Bombas Socks (left), close up of woman's legs with one foot wearing a shoe and the other wearing Bombas Socks (middle), and an extreme close up of the texture of Bombas Socks (right)

You don’t want to ruin the look of these cool shoes with regular socks, so I also tested out Bombas No-Show Socks , which are a much lower profile than standard socks. Unlike most no-show socks, these have a special heel grip that prevents them from slipping down and bunching up in your shoes, and they worked with most of the pairs I tried above.

Do Compression Socks Really Work?

Two sets of Gekks socks and a view inside of a shoe outfitted with Gekks

If even a no-show sock is too much for you (like if you’re wearing a ballet flat), I recommend Gekks , a new system that you install into your shoes to give you all the benefits of socks (no blisters, no odors) with no sock lines, even in the lowest shoes. These are ultra-thin and won’t interfere with your shoes’ fit, and you can get ones designed especially for ballet flats, loafers, slip-ons, or sneakers.

For a trendy, vintage look, consider these classic Reeboks that our very own product analysts own and love. "I love the simple, classic look that’s easy to dress up or dow n ," says Senior Textiles Analyst, Emma Seymour. "I find them comfortable to wear, but they’re stiffer and offer less cushioning," she warns, so anyone with joint pain or sensitivity should be cautious before purchasing. Still, their goes-with-anything vibe will easily take you from planes, trains and automobiles to restaurants and bars.

We all know that classic sneakers don’t always make you look like a local (or pair well with your cute dinner outfit), so why not consider these trendy slip-ons from Rothy’s? They’re casual, super comfortable and require very little breaking in, according to our footwear experts. Better yet, they’re machine washable so they’ll look as good as new even after your trip.

A Family Travel Awards winner , these popular Allbirds will easily squeeze into any suitcase without adding much weight or taking up much precious space. Our editors swear by how comfortable they are , naming them a must-have for trips to European capitals or destinations that require a lot of walking. Plus, they’re available in a variety of prints, patterns, colors and even half sizes.

Featuring support that rivals some sneakers, Chacos are a go-to if you hate being stuck inside sneakers or you're heading to a warm destination but still want plenty of security. A 2024 Travel Awards Winner , testers were impressed not only by the sandals’ support but also by the shoe’s built-in traction that helps prevent slipping on a variety of surfaces . Our experts also appreciate that the straps are adjustable so you can customize the perfect fit and that they're offered in a range of colors and prints.

Whether you’re bringing a carry-on or checking your luggage, it’s best to stick with lightweight travel shoes. To keep your total weight to a minimum without sacrificing comfort, our pros suggest this versatile pair of sneakers from New Balance that weighs just 150 grams per shoe . We appreciate that the footbed is made of soft microfiber so you’re comfy at all times and that the style is available in various sizes, widths and shades.

If you like to work out while you’re on vacation or think the best way to discover a town is by foot, consider bringing the Brooks Ghost 15 along for the trip. This neutral sneaker can be used for running and walking and is a top choice for anyone seeking stability and control. Our testers loved the Ghost 15 for its cushioning, support and traction and raved about their comfort.

Birkenstocks have even around since 1744 for a reason, and our product analysts and editors swear by the brand’s shoes for those who suffer from foot pain, bunions or other common issues. The Arizona is one of the brand’s most iconic designs and will look stylish (and feel comfortable) as you make your way around a new city while letting your toes breathe. We appreciate the shoe’s durable construction, which features a supportive cork footbed and genuine leather straps . For an even lighter option that’s perfect for the pool, consider the Arizona EVA model that's made entirely from plastic.

HOKA Bondi 8

Bondi 8

Look around and you’ll probably see someone wearing HOKA sneakers . The brand's chunky sneaker style has a huge following. Though popular among runners, this French brand is also suitable for travel days thanks to its shoes' structure and support. To keep you on the move while walking through new cities (or if you’re someone with flat feet), our experts recommend the Bondi 8 for its plush cushioning and breathable mesh upper.

Crocs Classic Clogs

Classic Clogs

It’s hard to find shoes more lightweight, comfortable and convenient than Crocs, especially if you’re headed to a beach resort or plan to spend some time by the pool. Available in tons of fun colors and designs, our pros love how easy Crocs are to get on and off as well as their waterproof design. Just keep in mind that they lack the support needed for longer walks, so it’s best to keep them back at the hotel.

Merrell Moab 3

Moab 3

Heading to a national park this summer? These hiking shoes from Merrell are an absolute must. A top performer in Lab tests and a favorite among our testers, the Moab 3 is both super comfy and supportive. OOFOS are technically recovery shoes that aren’t meant to be worn all day, but you'll be grateful to slip them on at your hotel after a long day of getting your steps in . We also don't see the harm in wearing them during a long flight or by the pool (just rinse them off in the shower should they get dirty). One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets . Find out how and why to choose the best walking shoes for Europe!

Best Travel Shoes for Europe

Written by: Niki Landry

Table Of Contents

One of the charms of visiting many European cities is strolling through the authentic streetscapes. Old buildings, narrow alleys, and picturesque towns make for lovely photos, but often come with a pitfall: the cobblestone street.

Wearing the Naot Sabrina sandals in Lisbon

My biggest piece of advice is to choose function over fashion. Really? Yes! The last thing you want is to allow pulsing, injured, or tired feet prevent you from enjoying the trip of a lifetime.

While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven.

Pair this with the miles of walking you’ll do and your feet may be screaming by the end of the day. It can be hard to keep your feet feeling perfectly content when you’re walking all day, but with the tips below, you can take to the streets like a local and survive the days!

When choosing the correct footwear to traverse stone streets, make sure your Europe walking shoes include these features:

  • Adequate foot support
  • Cushioned supportive insole
  • Rubber sole with ridges and/or grooves
  • Style (a bonus)

At the end of this article, you’ll find a complete survival guide on how to choose comfortable travel shoes for Europe, but first, let’s take a look at our list of the best shoes for walking on cobblestones:

Comfortable Sandals for Europe

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Shop: Amazon | Zappos

Söfft Mirabelle Sandal

In the summertime, nothing beats a sandal, but it’s important to find something fashionable and supportive. As much as I love a simple slide-on sandal, they aren’t the best for long days and walking uphill.

Sandals are the most comfortable shoes for traveling in Europe in the summer, particularly in destinations with hot weather such as Rome, where the heat is absolutely overwhelming. If your feet swell in the heat, wearing enclosed shoes might feel torturous.

I highly suggest shoes with an ankle strap and cushioned sole like the Söfft Mirabelle Sandal . Leather straps also make for a more comfortable fit as opposed to a stiff, man-made upper, and they also help protect your shoes from sliding off on the cobblestones.

Naot Sabrina Sandals

TFG’s editor found the Naot Sabrina sandals to be the most comfortable sandals ever! She wore them to walk non-stop through Italy, Switzerland, France, and England on a fast paced 2-week trip. You can see her wearing them in the pictures above and read her full trip report with everything she packed here .

They’re easy to slip on and off and have cute silver hardware on the side of the elastic ankle straps. The footbed molds to your feet, which comfortably allows you to keep hitting the pavement even when your legs want you to stop.

Vionic Kirra Sandal with Arch Support

Sightseeing in Europe is a serious workout! Get ready to walk until you drop. Well, hopefully with the tips in this post we’ll help you avoid that! We just want you to be prepared with the best and most comfortable shoes possible for your European adventure.

Opt for shoes with arch support like the Vionic sandals shown above. This is one of the most popular walking sandals for Europe and pretty much almost any other destination.

Please avoid slip on or slide sandals and definitely no flip-flops. Aside from comfort, it’s very easy to twist your ankle on the uneven streets so a secure shoe is a must.

Comfortable Slip Ons for Europe

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Shop: Amazon | Zappos | Kohl’s | Nordstrom

Dr. Scholl’s Shoes Madison Sneaker

If you prefer a closed-toe option, then slip-ons, oxfords and loafers may be more your style. Look for slip on sneakers like the Dr Scholl’s Madison that offers insole support and cushioning .

Not only do they offer moderate support, they are available in over a dozen colors in sizes from 5-11 but some styles offer wide widths, too. You can always add an insole to some shoes to adjust for your own comfort level.

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Skechers Go Walk Joy Walking Shoe

When you’re searching for the best shoes for traveling in Europe, keep in mind that you might be walking 5 to 6 miles per day. You will be exhausted when you’re done exploring the beautiful cities. For that reason, thousands of travelers swear by Skechers walking shoes such as the style shown above.

Nothing beats the Skechers cushioning when you spend all day standing and walking. These tend to be the preferred option for problem feet!

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Vionic Splendid Kimmie Slip-on Walking Shoes

For slip-ons with orthotic arch support, Vionic has the best choice. Readers say that this brand is the best with one stating, “I have about four pairs of Vionics and love them all. They are super supportive and comfortable.”

No matter what shoe you choose, it’s extremely important that your shoes be broken in and comfortable to avoid soreness and blisters. Always pack bandaids and moleskin, just in case.

Tip: Pack a pair or two of these no-show socks to wear with your low-cut shoes.

Comfortable Sneakers for Europe

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Shop: Allbirds

Allbirds Wool Runners

Let’s get one thing clear: sneakers are incredibly popular in Europe. Many travelers worry about being pegged as a tourist because they’re wearing sneakers. but that just isn’t the case anymore.

Obviously, there are more fashionable options than others, such as the popular All Birds sneakers shown above, but the bottom line is that it’s what you wear them with – and don’t forget that confidence is the key to style no matter what shoes you have on.

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Skechers Ultra Flex Salutations Sneaker

For fans of Skechers superior comfort, consider the   low-key Salutations sneaker . It has a similar clean design to the All Birds including a discreet logo that doesn’t scream comfort shoe brand.

Keep the rest of your outfit minimalist and chic topped with a well-tailored jacket or coat. Your shoes won’t matter to anyone else and the best thing is that you’ll feel ultra-comfortable!

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Shop:  Taos

Taos Footwear Star Fashion Sneaker

Stylish sneakers like the Superga Cotu or Converse Shoreline are a popular option for women without foot issues. However, support and comfort is always a priority when it comes to travel. Shoes like Converse that you may have once been able to stand in all day for over 10 hours may no longer be comfortable if your lifestyle has changed over time.

Instead, opt for similar looking sneakers such as the Taos Star pictured above or the leather ones Taos Plim Soul Lux Fashion Sneaker . They offer hidden arch support while maintaining a classic design.

Bombas makes the best no-slip, no-show socks and we can’t recommend them enough!

Comfortable Walking Boots for Europe

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Blondo Villa Waterproof Ankle Boots

For visiting destinations in the shoulder season or with unpredictable weather, a pair of comfortable, waterproof boots are a must for traveling in Europe. It’s essentials to have footwear that can handle all the elements and keep your feet comfortable, warm, and dry all at the same time.

The Blondo Villa boots shown above are easily the best women’s walking shoes for Europe in Autumn, Winter, and Spring. In fact, this is THE most popular travel boot in the entire TFG community! Our editor also raves about them. Read the full review !

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Sorel Emelie III Chelsea Boot

To bear the brunt of cobblestones, look for options with a thick sole and cushioned interior such as the Sorel Emelie III shown above, which can be used in both rain and some snow. It has a sturdy rubber sole, which is incredibly helpful offering traction on uneven streets and also when walking downhill on slippery floors.

We’ll take a moment to note that some cities such as Paris or London can even experience rain in the summer. Always check the weather before your trip and opt for waterproof features whenever possible! Also available Sorel Emelie II .

For more ideas, take a look at the best and most comfortable women’s waterproof leather boots as voted by TFG’s readers!

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Sorel Joan Now Chelsea Boots

If you can find a pair that you can also wear at home, that’s always the best. Black ankle boots are ultra-versatile and are also a European footwear staple. They can easily be worn casually with jeans or leggings to sightsee and you can dress them up with tights and a dress, too.

Don’t forget about other neutral colors, too. Tan and brown are just as versatile as black shoes and add an element of interest to all-black outfits, too. The Sorel chelsea boots shown above are available in a variety of different shades – you’re sure to find your perfect neutral!

Note: don’t be afraid of shoes with some heel. If they’re from “comfort” brands like the ones shown in this post, they’re heeled because they offer arch support. Here are some shoe suggestions if you suffer from serious foot issues such as plantar fasciitis.

Comfortable Ballet Flats for Europe

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Yosi Samra Samara II Flats

For the record, we really DO NOT recommend ballet flats as your sightseeing shoes. If you want a dressier shoe option, bring a packable pair like the stylish but budget-friendly Yosi Samra’s shown above.

You can wear these for short periods of time such as in the evenings for dinner when your feet are swollen and you just want to have a change of shoes. They could also work as the shoes you fly in – just promise us you won’t try walking in them all day, please?

If you love ballerina flats and want to wear them for longer periods of time, try to choose a comfort flat like the ones featured here and here .

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Hush Puppies Chaste Ballet Flats

The Hush Puppies ballet flats shown above are a good option for a dressy, versatile shoe on light travel days or evenings. They’re the readers’ top pick for travel flats. However, we don’t recommend you spend eight hours walking in them. Always look for a flexible sole, cushioned insole, and a soft upper that easily molds to your foot.

We’ll overemphasize that ballet flats are our least favorite option for cobblestones because they tend to offer almost no support. Trust us when we say that your feet will take a beating on those beautiful stone streets.

best-walking-shoes-for-europe

Josef Seibel Pippa 07 Flats

It’s also important to note that some women don’t require as much support as others. One reader raves that her Josef Seibel ballerina flats were some of the best traveling shoes for Europe.

She said, “I love the comfort and look of Joseph Seibel’s black flats . I wore them while touring, walking on cobblestones, and going out to dinner and they still look great.” The ballet flats don’t look very stylish in the pic above, but TFG’s editor tried them on at Nordstrom and they were surprisingly cute!

Keeping Your Feet Happy

In addition to the best shoes for Europe, there are a few steps you can take to keep your feet happy on your trip:

BREAK IN YOUR SHOES . The most important thing you can do for your feet is break in your shoes before your trip. As one reader says, “My advice to all: walk tons in the shoes you plan to wear. Do NOT take any shoes you can’t do 1-2 miles in.”

Some of the best shoes for traveling Europe may have a rough break-in period, and you don’t want to endure the pain during your travels. If you break them in at home, you can wear them for shorter intervals and give your feet a break.

PACK MORE THAN 1 SIGHTSEEING SHOE: Additionally, it’s helpful to pack a few shoes for Europe and switch them out throughout your trip based on your activities and destinations.

As one reader says, “The main thing I try to do is switch up my footwear. I try not to wear the same shoes two days in a row, that way pressure points and painful areas are distributed differently each day,” while another adds, “I like to have different shoe options too. I find changing it up is the best thing for my feet.”

One reader swapped between two shoes and kept her feet happy. She says, “I just got back from two weeks in Italy, rotating between a pair of Hartjes XS lace-ups and Keen Rose sandals . I walked between 7 and 9 miles a day in really ferocious heat and never had a problem, and am truly grateful for both of those pairs of shoes.”

TAKE IT EASY AT THE END OF THE DAY . And lastly, give your feet some love when you are resting and sleeping for the night. A reader shares, “I married a man who spent his youth backpacking, hiking and doing survivalist training.

On our long trips, we sleep with our feet elevated slightly on the pillow or two. It helps your feet recover and reduces swelling. I’m always shocked how much of a difference it makes!”

Thanks for the travel shoes/boots recommendations. I purchased the Sketchers Go Walk Joy slip-on shoes which are extremely comfortable and oh so convenient when going through security. I also purchased the Blondo Villa Waterproof ankle boots. They are cute and comfy as well. I have not yet taken them along with me on a trip. Going to Greece in May so I’m starting to plan my wardrobe.and work with my packing cubes.

Barbara Ryan

I am always looking for the perfect shoe. I like the Skechers Ultra Flex Salutations Sneaker that you show above. They look stylish as well as attractive.

Love the reminder that even heels are okay as long as they are a good, supportive brand.

Carlene Ziegler

I was pleasantly surprised by the wool Allbirds I took on my trip to Scotland. My feet stayed warm, dry and comfortable!

Travel Fashion Girl is the best. It gave me great ideas on what and how to pack when I went to Europe. Love reading her articles the hundreds of tips on what to do when traveling to different parts of the world. Thank you for all you do.

Linda Biche

Travel Fashion Girl is so unbelievably informative; from what to wear when and where you travel, the most comfortable and client-proven recommendations from your head to your toes and everything in between, too. She covers it all with suggestions on where to get particular items and suggests what to specifically pack for every kind of trip. Such an enjoyable, fun site to explore and use as a truly wonderful “fashion” guide! Love it.

After reading your recommendation, I purchased the Naot Sabrina sandals for a trip to Europe this summer. They looked great and were so comfortable walking miles on all those cobblestone streets. Thanks!

Thank you for such a great article. I am planning a trip to Paris, and your articles will ensure I have a successful and comfortable trip! I already see several styles of shoes that I want to get! Thank you also for the links. All the advice is so helpful.Where are the packing cubes available now? It looks like Amazon is out of stock indefinitely.

Hi Elsa, so glad you found the article helpful!

We’re still recovering from 2020 and unfortunately our Compass Rose product line has been massively impacted and at this moment in time we’re not sure when or if we’ll be making our packing cubes again. And sadly we don’t have any available at the moment.

We do have other suggestions for packing cubes based on our readers recommendations here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/packing-cubes-video-tutorial-learn-how-to-pack-light/

Thank you for getting back to me. I’m so disappointed that the Compass Rose products are no longer available! Thank you for the links to other packing cubes and for your comments about them!

Jill Scalia

I’m headed to Italy in October, and I’m not worried about packing carry-on only, the clothes I’m taking, the pick-pocketers, or the weather…but the only worry I do have is choosing the right shoes. I know from experience how miserable walking can be if you don’t have on the correct shoes. Thank you for the advice in this post! It definitely helps alleviate the worry!

Holly Lambruschini

I have wide feet with a medium to high arch so finding good shoes and sandals hasn’t been easy. For shoes, one thing I’ve recently discovered is the game changer of inserts. I went to my local running store and after observation and measurements, they outfitted me with inserts that provide the perfect support. For sandals, after numerous trips to Europe and South/Central America one pair of sandals that never fails to disappoint is my Rainbows. I LOVE them. They are comfortable, take up little space, go with everything, and they are not slippery on cobblestones. I’m going to switch it up and bring I my Birkenstock sandals on my next trip in 10 days. I’ll report back on the final verdict of Rainbows vs. Birkenstock later.

KimmieA

Great article. I live in Mexico–cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks–and the traditional athletic shoe/sneaker just doesn’t work here. The soles are too spongy and soft, they provide no protection when the foot strikes the hard stone. Sure, sneakers are great for the US, when you go from house to car to gym (where you work out on a soft-impact floor) but that just won’t work on cobblestones. A more rigid sole, like you find on Sperry Topsiders or boots, works much better and keeps your foot pain-free.

Hi Kimmie, thank you for sharing your great advice about the cobblestones!! A comfortable shoe is always a necessity with adequate foot support and a good rubber sole 🙂

Terrie

My advice? Find a full-service shoe store. They’re rare these days, but if you can, it is sooo worth it. The one I went to was able to help find insoles that had correct arch placement for me (mine are farther forward than most). Also, for cooler, wetter weather, after-market waterproofing is an option. I found a pair of suede boots I LOVED (Earth Shoes Boone), which are not waterprrof, but a silicone treatment fixes that right up. They have good support and have both laces and a zipper (for both adjustable fit and easy on/off).

Hi Terrie, thank you so much for sharing your amazing advice, this is really useful!! 🙂

Farah

Bought a pair of Superga which was disappointing. The sides of my feet hurt from friction. I will still wear them but this tine, with socks. ?

Hi Farah, thank you for sharing your experiences of the Superga sneaker, that is such a shame that you did not find them more comfortable. 🙁

Jenny

Can I add another suggestion for people who want a great walking shoe is the NZ brand of Allbirds, these were recommended to me be some American ladies in Rome. I’ve now purchased a pair and am off to Venice hopefully with more comfortable feet than the last time,!

Candid Hill

I’ve tried to find these online but I can’t tell what the NV brand is.

Dine

Allbirds have been a game changer for me. I can even go sockless.

Lori

My husband I traveled to Italy in April and I researched shoes for months – ordering and returning several pairs prior to deciding on the Blondo waterproof booties and Ecco Soft 7 sneaker. I have extremely fussy feet and for the most part, switching between the two pairs worked fine, but I found myself wishing I had just a little more cushion in the soles of both. If we had stayed longer than our 10 days, I may have gone shoe shopping. My husband swears by his Crocs and found his feet were sore too. The cobblestones really do take their toll!

Hi Lori, thank you for sharing your experiences of the Blondo waterproof booties and the Ecco Soft 7 Sneaker with us! Hope you had an amazing time during your trip to Italy! 🙂

Judy

What brand was the waterproof boots you showed in your video? I did not see them posted.

Hi Judy, the boots in the video are Eileen Fisher, but they are not waterproof boots. Hope that helps! 🙂

Lauren

Do you have any idea where I could find shoes like in the main image? Thanks!

Hi Lauren, unfortunately the product sold out some time ago so we’re not sure of the brand. Sorry we couldn’t have been more helpful 🙁

Katherine

Hi Alex: Where did you put the links to all the shoes shown in your video? I can’t find them. Thanks for this post, I know it’ll come in handy for my trip to Florence in the spring—absolutely can’t wait! BTW, while in Italy did you bother to get a pair custom made?

Barara

You can never go wrong with Birkenstocks for comfort and stability! Most people think of the Arizona sandal, but they sell attractive shoes and boots as well.

Kaz

Sketchers are wonderful. Very light and the cushioned sole is great when you’re going to be on hard surfaces all day, like cobblestones or pavements. If your feet swell because of a long flight or an injury (after my broken ankle I suffered from this for a year), they are soft enough to stretch a little and accommodate.

pam

ALex, what brand and style are the gray textured booties in your video!!??? thanks!

alex

Hi Pam, I think they’re Eileen Fisher, bought earlier this year at Nordstrom 🙂

Jennifer Lewandowski

What does everyone think of allbirds

Peggy Oliver

As I am going to Italy next summer, this blog has been a fantastic help. Thank you so very much for insight!

Thank you Peggy! Have fun 🙂

Megan M

Love this – thanks for the recs. Going to try the Taos sneakers!

Beth

What would you suggest for a 3 week river cruise from Hungary to Amsterdam beginning in mid September. Lots of walking! I want to look stylish but comfortable.

iamtiramisu

hello! Your blog has been very helpful in all my travels. I would be going to Paris for the first time in August. I would have to wear my Go Walk Skechers as Im taking care of my heel (fracture last year). I got a Vionic pair too. Would both be suitable?

Hi there! I think so. Readers rave about their Go Walks and also Vionics. Sounds like you’ve got it covered!

Lacy

I love my Go Walks, but they will not keep feet dry in all the rainy weather in Europe.

Joanna Neo

May I know where to find that boots you have? It’s gorgeous!

Hi Joanna, which boots? The ones in the video?

Dana

Great article. I have the Sofft sandals! I love them, however there is not much arch support. They are very comfortable & I get loads of compliments. I got the tan leather.

They have many cute styles, good choice Dana!

Taina

This article save my life during our last trip to Europe! Thanks,

That’s great to hear Taina! Thanks 🙂

I LOVE the shoes in the picture with the bike. Any idea where I can find them?

I’ll definitely try some of these out for my upcoming trip to Europe!

Hi Susan, glad you like them!

Erna Steyn

We are visiting europe and specifically germany in june- we go there regularly and notice our daughter and her in laws dress ro go to town. Please assist with tips. I am 67 years old. We will also spend 10 days of the month looking at property in the Mosel region and i want to dress appropriately. I dont have limitless money.

Jennifer Bradley

I was going to add that, if you need a dressy pair of shoes for going out to dinner etc, go for wedges (and not too high either), as ordinary heels really don’t cope with cobblestones and even if you’re only walking a block or two, you can still have a problem with many heeled shoes.

alex

Great advice Jennifer! Totally agree!

Sara bolanos

I’m studying abroad in Wales this spring (January- June) and I plan to be traveling all around main land europe! What lists do you recommend looking at for packing?

Sanuks were great for Maui, for the cobblestones of Portugal, not so much. Especially Sintra where some of the cobbles were so slick & smooth, it was like they were polished. The Sanuks went back in the suitcase and I wore my leather gladiator sandals for the rest of the trip. Cool & comfortable and no more slipping on the cobblestones.

Great advice Amie! Thanks for sharing!

Eva

What do you recommend for May. Is it cold still?

Depends where you’re heading Eva! Northern Europe will still be chilly, but Southern starts to get beautiful about then! Happy travels!

Maura Lynch

This article is so useful for American cities with cobblestone streets as well. I’m heading to a business conference in New Orleans in September, and these suggestions for comfortable shoes are perfect!

YEs, couldn’t agree more! Enjoy NOLA! Eat some beignets!

I’ve been having such trouble finding good, flat sandals this summer here in Madrid. Part of the issue is I have tiny feet (35). I’ll have to check out a few of the options you’ve listed. Thanks!

Whether you’re packing for a business trip or your annual vacation, space and weight are usually limited. One way to make the most of your luggage allowance is to carefully choose which shoes you take. A lightweight, comfortable pair that can fulfill several different functions (from providing support on your city walking tour or hiking excursion to looking good at dinner afterward) is ideal.

Our travel experts tested 22 of the best women’s shoes for your next adventure, rating each pair for comfort, fit, quality, and value, then choosing winners for a range of categories from “Best Sandals” to “Most Sustainable.”

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

 Amazon

  • Cushioning 4 /5
  • Responsiveness 3.5 /5
  • Blister Protection 4.5 /5

Ready out of the box

Hard-wearing and easy to clean

Reasonable price point

Limited color choices

If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials.

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Knit textile upper, Cloudfoam midsole and outsole | Sustainability: Primegreen recycled materials

Superga Classic Sneaker

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Sturdily built

Timeless style

Huge choice of sizes and colors

Not the best for all-day wear

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up.

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

Best Walking

New balance women's 574 core sneaker.

New Balance

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

Wear well for extended periods

Sturdy, reliable construction

Variety of sizes

Sizing can be tricky

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support.

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

Sizes: 5 to 12 | Materials: Mesh upper, EVA midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Recycled polyester, rubber, and bio-based foam

On Running Women's Cloudrift Shoe

  • Comfort 4.3 /5

Sleek, statement-making aesthetic

Easily fit into luggage

Key functional elements

Only available in regular fit

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole.

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Mesh upper, unspecified mid- and outsole | Sustainability: 35 percent recycled materials

Best Sandals

Keen women's elle backstrap sandal.

  • Quality 4.8 /5

Provide stable ride

Cute and casual aesthetic

Reduced environmental impact

Relatively expensive

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort.

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: PET straps, EVA midsole, jute-infused rubber outsole | Sustainability: Straps made from recycled plastic bottles

Best Hiking Sandals

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Lets you dial in the perfect fit

Handles demanding use

Toe loop may cause discomfort at first

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired.

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

Sizes: 5 to 12 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Polyester straps, PU midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Vegan-friendly construction

Best for the Office

Olukai leather sneakers.

  • Value 4.8 /5

The right balance between rigidity and flex

Two-way heel

Easy to maintain

Back tab may bump against the Achilles tendon

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Sizes: 5 to 11 | Materials: Leather upper, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Not listed

Most Sustainable

Allbirds women's plant pacers.

  • Value 4.5 /5

Wear in quickly

Cushioned fit

Not in love with the color

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag.

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

Sizes: 5 to 11 (no half-sizes) | Materials: Plant leather upper, SweetFoam midsole, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Made from plant-based or recycled materials

Best Splurge

Frankie4 australia women's winnie ii white suede shoes.

  • Comfort 5 /5

Upscale, slightly retro style

Adjustable fit

Zero breaking-in period required

Some more colors would be nice

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing.

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

Sizes: 6 to 13 | Materials: Leather upper, rPET foam lining, rubber outsole | Sustainability: Lining made from recycled plastic bottles

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day.

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

TripSavvy / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear.

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles.

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced.

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes.

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability.

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

TripSavvy / Anna Popp

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal.

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes.

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder.

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively.

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly.

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers.

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

How we test walking shoes

Your browser does not support the video tag.

From mesh tops ideal for beach walking to leather and orthotic-friendly designs, we’ve carefully vetted, tested, and thoroughly reviewed all the models on this list for your convenience.

Here are the phases involved in the selection process:

  • We invest our money and time to test all the walking shoes suitable for European travel.  This ensures the independence and objectivity of our reviews.
  • We walk at least 10,000 steps in each shoe to make our in-depth reviews and final verdict. We pay attention to the model’s real-life fit, comfort level, cushioning, flexibility, support, weight, durability, traction, and more.
  • We subject the footwear to long hours of lab testing. We collect data other than the on-foot feel, but also the actual measurements and evidence-based results from our tests.

Best overall walking shoes for Europe

On Cloud 5

What makes it the best?

Strolling around Europe is a magical experience in itself, but what elevates this further is an amazing pair of shoes that makes each step fantastic. After spending hours testing the On Cloud 5 in the lab and on our feet, we found the On Cloud 5 to be the ultimate partner for travels around Europe. What we found particularly enchanting was its long-hour-friendly cushioning, its lightweight build, and its flexible sole.

We put the On Cloud 5 to work in lengthy walking sessions to simulate maximizing every minute spent while traveling. We found it to be an extremely comfy shoe even as the miles piled up. We couldn’t get enough of it! We then checked its midsole’s hardness in the lab to see what makes its cushioning great. It’s 4% firmer than the average walking shoe, placing it in a great spot. This translates to a very balanced walking experience, granting the comfort of soft shoes while not being too squishy.

Even with the amazing amount of utility derived from the On Cloud 5’s cushioning, it still felt unbelievably light, which is great to fight off fatigue. Its weight of 8.4 oz (238g) is a whole 0.9 oz (26g) lower than that of the average walking shoe.

Plus, going from each step to the next with the On Cloud 5 felt soooo satisfying. We looked into this further by testing its flexibility. We secured the shoe by its tip and bent it using our force gauge to measure the force it exerts when bent at a 90-degree angle. From this, we found that it’s 35% more flexible than the average shoe. This makes the On Cloud 5 one of the most flexible shoes we’ve tested across all categories!

While the On Cloud 5 proves to be a reliable partner in general, it doesn’t do so well against stones and debris. They simply get stuck in the On Cloud 5’s grooves. We don’t recommend this shoe if you don’t want to deal with that.

  • Perfect for all-day wear
  • Unbelievably lightweight
  • Can do low-impact workouts
  • Amazing in-shoe feel
  • Very breathable
  • Super easy on-off
  • Great flexibility
  • Regular laces are added
  • Sustainable materials (44%)
  • Not for wide feet
  • Lacks durability
  • Outsole catches pebbles

Best walking shoes for all-day wear in Europe

Hoka Transport

The number one Europe walking shoe for all-day wear is Hoka Transport and here’s why: it's an absolute feet haven! We loved how Transport kept us comfy, supported, and protected from all kinds of pains, from blisters to fatigue, even for round-the-clock travels.

Rubbing and chafing never became an issue on our trips with Hoka Transport. When we dissected the shoe in our lab, we realized that we owe its comfort to the generously padded interior. We even measured the tongue’s thickness as 7 mm, which is 3 mm more padded than the average.

Underfoot, Hoka Transport is so divine. In our lab, we pressed our durometer to its midsole and we were amazed at its 21.9 HA softness which is also 25.5% softer than average. While it has a superb level of softness, it didn’t overwhelm our feet with squishiness, rather it provided us with a hint of firmness, perfect for more than 12 hours of Europe tour!

Also, the midsole didn’t harden up so badly when we stuck the Transport into our freezer for 20 minutes. While its softness changed by 43.2%, at a recorded hardness of 31.4 HA, it was still 20.9% softer than the average. This also makes Transport perfect for Europe snowfalls. Inversely, though, it isn’t so ideal for hot weather. We confirmed this in our smoke test, in which a minimal amount of smoke escaped, scoring only 2/5 for breathability.

  • Unbelievably comfy
  • Spacious toe box
  • Adequately cushioned
  • Superior traction
  • Reliable outsole durability
  • Easy to slip in and out
  • True-to-size fit
  • Easy to clean
  • Sustainable
  • Not great for warm weather
  • Squeaky during break-in

Walking shoes for Europe with the best comfort

Nike Motiva

We ventured through Europe, traversing diverse pavements and cobblestone streets, all in the embrace of unparalleled comfort provided by Nike's Motiva. We took the shoe to the lab and confirmed its leg-saving and heavenly ride through its unlimited cushioning, smooth forward transitions, and reliable outsole.

To make the most out of traveling to such beautiful destinations, we wore the Motiva to be able to last all day without any pain or discomfort. Its generous 34.9/25.6 mm cushioning makes long miles roll by with its pillowy goodness. Our durometer unveils a measurement that’s 40.0% lighter and softer than average. It also features unique waves underfoot to help even out the pressure.

Motiva has a prominent rocker that encourages forward movements with less effort. To maintain seamless transitions, the midsole needs a level of stiffness for the rocking effect. And true enough, our flex test reveals Motiva is 43.1% more rigid than the average walking shoe.

The outsole holds the perfect formula of toughness and traction, preventing any slips even on wet roads. With our durometer, we measured the rubber to be a highly dense 92.0 HC, 21.4% above average, promising it would last hundreds of miles.

Unfortunately, Motiva will only feel comfortable in cooler seasons as its thick and dense upper is unsuitable for hot weather.

  • Rocker makes for effortless walks
  • Audaciously plush cushioning
  • Out-of-the-box comfort
  • Very wide and stable base (for walking/jogging only!)
  • Durable and grippy sole
  • Amazing wear resistance in the upper
  • A Nike shoe that's NOT tight and narrow
  • Lacks breathability for hot weather
  • Sole develops wrinkles easily
  • Rocker takes time to get used to

Best lightweight walking shoes for Europe

Allbirds Tree Runners

The best lightweight walking shoe for Europe should be able to provide cozy comfort day in and day out. From testing the Allbirds Tree Runners in the lab and on the streets, we found that having it on our feet provides gratuitous amounts of comfort that makes them feel like home. What made this stand out is its padded insole and its flexible sole, combined in a featherlight package.

As we walked in the Allbirds Tree Runners through our battery of tests, we felt like we were above the clouds. For us, what made this happen was its padded insole. In the lab, we measured its thickness to be 7.2 mm which is a whole 30.9% thicker than that of the average walking shoe. Plus, its merino wool lining feels oh-so pleasant on foot!

What further adds to the Allbirds Tree Runners’ level of coziness is its amazing flexibility. On foot, it felt like we were going around barefoot! We tested this in our lab by securing the shoe by its tip in our lab and bending it at a 90-degree angle using our force gauge to measure the force it exerts back. Its flexibility of 12.2N makes it 36.5% more flexible than the average walking shoe.

Lastly, while we walked with the Allbirds Tree Runners, its amazingly lightweight build made us forget that we had it on in the first place. Its weight of 245g (8.6 oz), makes it 23.1% lighter than the average walking shoe.

Our tests with the Allbirds Tree Runners were conducted across a number of different surfaces. While it did well on dry surfaces, it didn’t do amazingly on wet ones. As such, we don’t recommend it for those who plan to travel to humid European destinations.

  • Extra comfortable interiors
  • Equally cozy in 40 and 85ºF
  • Can be worn without socks
  • Lightweight and packable
  • Flexible sole
  • Removable insoles
  • Easy to style
  • Machine washable
  • Sustainable design
  • No half sizes
  • Lacks arch support

Walking shoes for Europe with the best arch support

Skechers Arch Fit 2.0

We walked along the cobble-stoned streets of Europe and discovered Arch Fit 2.0 offers the best arch support. Our lab results show it’s a highly supportive and stable platform without sacrificing comfort. Even those of us with flat feet and overpronation found it great for all-day wear.

Our caliper shows the tallest heel we’ve ever recorded — 39.2 mm. Even the forefoot is higher than average, leading to a 15.2 mm drop. We have tons of cushion for impact protection and the high drop protects us from ankle and Achilles strain.

While most maximalists are unstable, we felt steady thanks to the wide and firm platform. Its 114.5/90.0 mm width provides extra ground contact for surefootedness. We have no awkward foot movements since the cushion doesn’t collapse easily. Our durometer confirms its 30.4 HA foam is firm enough for support yet soft enough for comfort.

Another main pillar of support is the rigid midsole. Our bend test shows it's 18.6% more resilient than average — just the right amount of stiffness for those who need heavy support. Fortunately, it doesn't feel overly stiff thanks to its flex grooves.

We found the upper suitable for cooler conditions (until 70°F/20°C) because we ended up with damp feet in the heat. We don’t recommend using this pair in the summer.

  • Amazing support for overpronation
  • Wide and stable platform
  • Tons of cushioning
  • Lighter than the Arch Fit 1.0
  • Padded and cozy interiors
  • True to size and fit
  • Very poor breathability

Walking shoes for Europe with the best sock-like fit

Skechers GO WALK 6

Our optimal choice for a sock-like fit during Europe trips is the Skechers GO WALK 6. This walking shoe elevated our excursions with its comfortable one-to-one fit. Just like socks, it doesn’t bear weight, embraces our toes, and moves smoothly along with our feet, making it our standout pick out there.

Walking in Skechers GO WALK 6 is much like walking with nothing on our feet. We verified this weightlessness using our scale, which registered 8.78 oz (249g), 7.5% lighter than most walking shoes we’ve tried.

The flexible construction of the Skechers GO WALK 6 is also what made us enjoy being in the shoe for a whole day of walking, as it enabled a fluid heel-to-toe transition. Indeed, when we tested for its flexibility with our digital force gauge, the shoe readily bent at 12.9N of force. This puts the Skechers GO WALK 6 ahead of the average by 35.5% in terms of pliability.

While we measured the widest part of the toebox to be super close to the average at 98 mm, it didn’t cause any restriction to our feet. Thanks to the stretchy and sock-like upper of the shoe, it made our feet feel like hugged. However, we expected incredible air circulation given that the Skechers GO WALK 6 boasts a knit upper. As it turned out, it didn’t allow much air to enter as much as it didn’t allow much smoke that we pumped inside to escape. Due to this, we don’t suggest getting this pair if breathability is non-negotiable.

Walking shoes for Europe with the best style

On Cloudnova

After our actual trip to Europe and a visit to our lab, we discovered that the best on-foot company with the greatest style is On Cloudnova. Merely looking at it tells why this one has the best design out there. Every detail is tied together, from its bootie construction and midsole flex grooves to its reflective elements and other minimal details. And wearability-wise, this shoe got us prancing in joy without feeling any smidgen of tiredness from traveling from morning to night!

While roaming around in Europe, we could stay out for as long as we wanted because the footbed is incredibly comfortable. In our lab, we found that the midsole hardness is 29.0 HA which is 1.4% softer than average.

Also, our feet bent with ease while wandering in the continent. Although our digital force gauge recorded a resistance of 29.9N, meaning Cloudnova is 58% stiffer than average, we rated Cloudnova 2/5 (5 as the stiffest) in our longitudinal and torsional flexibility assessment, as it bent significantly when we used our own hand strength. Plus, we found that the not-overly-pliable construction of Cloudnova, along with a wide base, helped in making the shoe stable.

However, Cloudnova didn’t help us much during our strolls under the scorching sun. We subjected it to our smoke test, and it only scored 3/5 because its upper didn’t let much smoke get out. Because of this, we do not advise sporting Cloudnova for long hours during summer.

Choosing the best walking shoes for Europe

Walking is an enjoyable and practical mode of transportation in most parts of Europe, so you'll likely find yourself on your feet for hours each day. Ill-fitting or uncomfortable shoes can quickly lead to blisters, sore feet, and a less enjoyable travel experience.

on-cloud-5-lightweight

Here’s how to choose the best walking shoes for Europe that will keep your feet happy–allowing you to explore this walker’s paradise with ease and style.

Consider your travel activities

Of course, no European itinerary is the same. Looking at where you’ll be spending most of your time exploring is the best place to start when picking the best walking shoes for you.

Exploring cities

If your itinerary includes city exploration, you'll want walking shoes that are comfortable for extended periods of walking on pavement. Look for lightweight sneakers with cushioning and arch support.

Outdoor adventures

For outdoor enthusiasts planning hikes or nature walks, opt for hiking shoes or trail running shoes that offer added durability, ankle support, and a sturdier outsole. These shoes will keep your feet protected on uneven terrain.

Key features to look for

Whether you will mostly be on mountain trails, cobblestone paths, or city streets, one thing is certain: your feet will be spending a lot of time in your shoes. As a result, comfort, fit, versatility, and durability all become important features to look for in walking shoes for Europe.

Comfort and fit

Above all, prioritize comfort and proper fit. Your walking shoes should have enough room for your toes to move comfortably, while providing a snug fit around your heel to prevent slipping.

allbirds-tree-runners-fit.JPG

Look for shoes that are lightweight, breathable, and flexible upper construction, with well-cushioned and stable midsoles.

You want shoes that are both protective and supportive while walking, while still being comfortable and lightweight for long train rides and afternoons spent in airport terminals.

Versatility

Many shoes are made for walking, and it is easy to tell. They feature sporty, athletic colorways that don’t always look great in non-athletic contexts. The best walking shoes for Europe have more versatile and well-rounded designs, relying on neutral colors and low-profile features.

Since you'll encounter various surfaces, durable shoes with good traction are essential. This will help prevent slips on wet cobblestones or rocky paths.

You also don’t want to have to replace your shoes mid-trip, so investing in shoes from reputable brands with excellent build quality will ensure your footwear is up for the rigors of walking-intensive adventures.

We perform a series of durability tests on each shoe to test its limits.

Walking shoe styles and aesthetics

Many walking shoes are decidedly unfashionable, but the best walking shoes for Europe don’t sacrifice form in the name of function. It's entirely possible to find shoes that are both comfortable and stylish. When picking shoes that pair well with any outfit, you should prioritize:

Neutral Colors : Choose walking shoes in neutral colors like black, gray, or beige. Muted earth tones, like blue and green, can also work well. These colors are versatile and easily complement a variety of outfits.

Minimal Designs : Bulky midsoles, deep lugs, and high-cut, thickly padded ankle collars are great for more rugged hiking or trail running but tend to be overkill for most pedestrian pursuits. The best walking shoes for Europe are well-cushioned, supportive, and comfortable, but with streamlined and minimal designs that forgo some of the bells and whistles of hiking shoes to balance performance with versatility.

Europe walking shoes: brands to look for

Some brands do a better job than others at putting out stylish and high-performing walking shoes well-suited to European travel. These are a few of our favorites.

On: innovative Swiss engineering

Swiss brand On is renowned for its innovative technology that combines cushioning, responsiveness, and sleek Swiss design sensibilities. Their comfortable and supportive CloudTec soles are perfect for long days of exploring, while their refined aesthetics look as good in a French bistro as they do on trails in the Alps.

Hoka: ultimate cushioning

Hoka is a trailblazer in maximalist shoe design. Walking shoes from this French brand–like the Hoka Transport–offer unparalleled cushioning, making them an excellent choice for those seeking comfort during extended walks and long travel days.

Allbirds: sustainable comfort

Allbirds specializes in sustainable footwear made from eco-friendly materials. Their Tree Runner shoes are among the best walking shoes out there. With uppers featuring breathable and thermoregulating merino wool, they are extremely lightweight, comfortable, versatile, and stylish–everything you would want from a walking shoe for Europe.

Can I wear running shoes for walking in Europe?

Running shoes can be a comfortable option for walking in Europe, especially if they provide the necessary support and cushioning. However, running shoes are designed to encourage propulsive and efficient motion–many do not offer the same lateral stability and all-day comfort as walking-specific shoes.

Nike-React-Infinity-Run-3-in-shoe-feel

Are waterproof shoes necessary for Europe?

While waterproof shoes can be beneficial in wet climates or during unexpected rain showers, they're not an absolute necessity. It's a good idea to consider the types of activities and season you’ll be visiting before deciding on waterproof footwear.

What's the difference between hiking shoes and regular walking shoes?

Hiking shoes are specifically designed for outdoor adventures. They offer features like lugged outsoles, robust ankle support, rock plates, and heavier materials to handle uneven terrains.

merrell-moab-3-review.JPG

A hiking shoe is likely to be overkill if you are mostly exploring cities and towns in Europe.

Walking shoes are more suited for urban exploration or light trails and may not provide the same level of support and protection you would want on more technical terrain.

Can I wear sandals for walking in Europe?

Sandals with appropriate arch support and cushioning can be great for walking in Europe, especially during warmer months. Although they may be more comfortable in warm weather, they do not provide the versatility, protection, and durability you get from the best walking shoes.

The Best Travel Shoes, According to Globetrotters

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.0

Whether you’re hitting the slopes in Aspen in the winter or escaping to a faraway beach in the summer (or winter), getting out of town requires the right gear. That of course includes the stuff you’ll need when you get wherever you’re going, but just as important are the things you’ll use in transit — because everyone knows that getting there is half the battle. In our ongoing search for the best travel gear (see what our editors can’t get on an airplane without , and our roundup of the best rolling luggage ), one item that’s always top of mind is a good pair of shoes to travel in — as in, ones that can withstand both airplanes and cobblestones, and are nice-looking enough to wear straight from the plane, or a day on the streets, to dinner. So we asked some people who get around a lot — including travel writers, photographers, tour guides, globetrotters, and other frequent fliers — about their favorites. Read on for their 28 picks, which include sandals, flats, sneakers, and boots. Quick shopping note: A lot of these shoes come in both men’s and women’s, or in unisex, sizes.

Best sneakers for travel

ADIDAS Women’s Cloudfoam Racer

Travel blogger Annette Richmond calls these Adidas Cloudfoam Racers her “go-tos” because they are “super lightweight and breathable,” which makes them perfect to wear on a flight or walking around a new city, she says. “I pair them with leggings or shorts for an athleisure look that’s perfect for hiking, sightseeing, or a travel day.”

Allbirds Men’s Wool Runners

For another lightweight, easy-to-put-on pair of sneakers, Grant Nyquist, the director of adventure at the Outbound Collective , recommends “Allbirds, hands down.” Wearing these makes airport security a breeze, he promises, and like the Adidas pair above, the Allbirds can be worn with most anything — including slacks. Plus, you can even wear them sockless because the wool wicks away any unwanted moisture. “For the price, the quality, and the style, nothing comes close,” Nyquist says.

New Balance Men's 990V4 Running Shoe

Strategist columnist and cool person Chris Black wears a pair of crisp, gray New Balance 990 v4s to complete his “respectable but still comfortable” airport ensemble. His advice: “Honestly, just keep your toes covered and you already look better than half of the airport population.”

Adidas Alphaboost Parley Shoes

If you are the sort of person who needs to fit in a workout while on vacation and would prefer not to pack two pairs of shoes, this Adidas pair works equally well on the streets or a treadmill, according to Ben Pundole, the editor-in-chief of travel magazine A Hotel Life . Their super-lightweight mesh upper allows feet to breathe during speed training, while still looking cool enough to pass for streetwear. Plus, they’re a part of Adidas’s Parley collection, which means they’re made using recycled plastic found in the ocean.

No Bull Project Dark Grey Gum Trainers

Matt Smith, a co-founder of bespoke luxury travel company Black Tomato , told us he prides himself on being a highly efficient traveler who very rarely checks a bag. That’s why he loves No Bull trainers, which he says are “ like four pairs of shoes” in one. (No Bull trainers took the runner-up spot on our lists of status gym sneakers for both men and women . ) Like Pundole’s favorite Adidas pair, Smith says these are comfortable enough to fly in, durable enough to work out in, and have a design that’s sleek enough to bridge the gap between going out to dinner with clients or taking meetings at the office.

Cole Haan GrandPrø Rally Laser Cut Sneaker

For a slightly less sporty sneaker, Tom Marchant — another co-founder of Black Tomato — suggests this handsome leather pair from Cole Haan, which he says are always a safe bet for travel since they’re designed for comfort and flexibility. “They’re incredibly breathable,” he explains, adding “they’re ideal for exploring a bustling metropolis by foot or gearing up for a long haul flight .”

Filling Pieces Low Curve Iceman Trimix 2.0 Sneakers

“The Filling Pieces shoes are the most comfortable I’ve ever encountered and incredibly durable,” according to David Prior, the founder of travel club PRIOR . The keys to a good traveling shoe , he says, are being able to get it on and off quickly, and for it to still feel comfortable when your feet inevitably swell while in the air. “They also need to be presentable enough when you’re getting off the plane and need to go straight into something,” Prior adds, noting that his favorite pair from Filling Pieces meets his criteria for ease of use and comfort, but still look super stylish with their fun colors and chunkier sole.

best travel shoes

“I’m an active traveler, so I know I need footwear that will be comfortable, lightweight, and good-looking,” says Kristin Finton, a category merchandising manager for footwear at REI . She likes this Altra pair for its “versatility” and “understated” style, noting the sneakers are great for walking all day or a quick run in an urban destination. “I love the fit, and they’re a huge REI customer favorite,” Finton adds. Adventure travel consultant Matt Schonwald — who also leads guide trips 100 days out of the year — is another proponent of Altra Footwear, but prefers its “trail-worthy” Altra Lone Peak RSM sneakers as his go-to travel pair.

Salomon Sense Ride Sneakers

If you are planning your upcoming trip to commune with nature, Finton suggests the Salomon Sense Ride sneakers. She wore them to hike and run along a river trail in north Vancouver and she says the grip made her feel secure: “I was especially pleasantly surprised that the grip held over larger wet boulders.” She also wore the same shoe to explore Runyon Canyon, which she describes as being a “super-hardpack, dry, sandy,” trail. “I thought I was going to go down because everyone was slipping on the sand layer, but nope — I felt secure, cushioned.” And as a bonus, she loves the “techy cool” look of the bright color and quick laces.

Vivobarefoot Primus Swimrun FG Mesh

For beach adventures, Josiah Q. Roe , the director of media company Granite & Light (which focuses on outdoor adventure and travel experiences), loves these mesh sneakers from Vivobarefoot, which he wore while on a trip to Roatán. “Hiking, swimming , scrambling over rocks and sharp coral: They crushed it and weigh next to nothing.”

Common Projects Achilles Grained Leather Sneakers

They may cost as much as some plane tickets, but according to Flight 001 co-founder John Sencion, you will not find a more stylish travel shoe (that’s also comfy) than the Achilles sneakers from status brand Common Projects. “From the jetway to the boardroom or the beach , this shoe has the broadest style spectrum than any other shoe,” Sencion says, adding that he’s felt as comfortable wearing them to a meeting at the company’s Tokyo office as he has to the beach in Tulum.

best travel shoes

For a less expensive travel shoe that’s just as good-looking, Mike Arnot, the founder of luggage company Owen & Fred , suggests Greats. “I see tourists wearing Crocs , and a few pilots wearing black Danskos ,” he says. “No. Just, no. I wear a pair of Greats,” which, Arnot adds, he’s been complimented on more than once at an airport — including by some hard-to-impress TSA agents.

Best slip-ons for travel

Sanuk Vagabond Slip-on Sneaker

For a recent two-week stint in Cusco, Peru, Schonwald told us he packed these and another pair of running shoes . But he barely used the running shoes, he said, because the Sanuk slip-ons were so comfortable for walking around town. In addition to being good for sightseeing on foot, he says these easily transition into beachwear if you’re going somewhere that’s part city, part sand. They also pack up well, he adds.

Women’s Lucky Brand Emmie Flats

Foods of New York Tours creative director Am Bandolik only takes one pair of shoes with her when she travels: the Emmie flats from Lucky Brand, which she’s worn “over the concrete of NYC and the cobblestones of Rome.” She loves that they are casual, but still feel feminine and stylish. Plus, they’re foldable, so it is “easy to fit a few colors — your basic black or brown and a fun color — in your suitcase without going over the weight limits on your bags.”

Clarks Women’s Kinzie Light Skimmer

In our roundup of the most comfortable shoes (according to people who stand all day), flight attendant Crystal Roseberry told us about her favorite comfy flats from Clarks, which she wears during long shifts in the air because they are “well made and cute, provide good support, and last forever.”

best travel shoes

Abra Boero, the founder and creative director of Off Season Rockaway , calls Sabahs “the ultimate travel shoe,” because they not only slip on and off with complete ease, but are suitable for so many different climates. “I wear the same pair to the beach that I wear in the winter with wool socks .” Their supple leather molds to your foot, making them super comfortable even after a long flight, and the unfussy design keeps them very lightweight, she promises.

Best boots for travel

A New Day Women's Chelsea Rain Boots

If you’re headed someplace known for rainy days, these weatherproof Chelsea-style rain boots are the ones that travel blogger and photographer Samantha O’Brochta relies on. She says they’re “extremely comfortable” and an “easy way to rock a cute pair of shoes that also double as something useful against inclement weather.” Plus, they cost a fraction of the price of a pair of Blundstones.

White Mountain Women's Santiago Ankle Boot

Richmond says that most people “think orthopedic or ugly” whenever she says the words “comfortable shoe,” but assures that these boots are neither. “White Mountains are comfortable shoes with style.” The ankle boots rise a bit lower on the leg than a Chelsea boot, and have a stacked heel that makes them great on trips where you might need to dress up a bit, she says. The heel isn’t too high, though — just enough to give you extra inches without killing your feet, according to Richmond.

Tod’s Short Suede Ankle Boot

“I don’t consider myself a big shopper, so finding one pair of shoes I can count on time and time again is essential, especially when traveling,” says James Merrett, the third co-founder of Black Tomato . During the winter months , he loves these boots from Tod’s, which offer more protection from the colder elements, but “most importantly don’t make you look like a tourist” due to their more “modern aesthetic.”

Clarks Desert Boots, Oak Suede

For a similar style of boot that costs a lot less, you might consider Clarks Desert Boots — a favorite style of Black , Strategist senior editor Anthony Rotunno , designer Andy Spade , and actress Frieda Pinto . In addition to looking nice enough to wear just about anywhere, the boots are also comfortable. As Pinto put it, “I feel like I can walk a  million miles in them .”

Women’s Ecco Skyler Wedge Booties

Skogg is a fan of these Ecco Wedge Booties for trips in colder weather . “They really held up during my trips to Iceland and Greenland and are lightweight for packing,” she explains. But, most importantly, “They are really comfortable to withstand an entire day of pavement wanderings,” she says.

Danner Mountain Light Cascade Boots

“If you’re looking for one boot to rule them all, the vintage styling of the Danner Mountain Light is iconic, and the one-piece leather design makes for a sturdy boot that can handle anything from a casual walk around Telluride to a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail,” says mountain climber Zina Bougri. (These also happen to be the boots that Reese Witherspoon wore in the movie Wild .) Once these babies mold to your feet, you’ll have a pair of boots to adventure in for years to come,” promises Bougri. She adds that the boots should be completely comfortable within a month. To best break them in, Bougri recommends wearing them around the house for a few days (even just while watching TV for a few hours at a time), then go on a few short hikes.

Danner Mountain 600 4.5” Hiking Boots

Alex Howard, the editor of Lonely Planet magazine , is also a fan of Danner boots, which he wore on a recent research trip to Alaska. “I’m a light packer, so I need a pair of shoes that can do double duty on trips where I’ll be spending as much time on the trails as I do in the city.” He says that these worked great as lightweight, waterproof hiking boots, while still being stylish enough to wear while checking out the craft-brewery scene in Anchorage. “Other hiking shoes are function over form, but these Danner boots have trendy leather uppers and red accents with all the support and ruggedness of proper trail boots.”

Men’s Asolo Agent Evo GV MM

For another pair of “town-to-trail” boots, REI category merchandising manager Tad Summersett likes the Agent Evo from Asolo. Like the Danner boots above, Summersett says these are “super versatile — stout enough to help support while carrying a pack between towns, but stylish enough to not look out of place in the pub that afternoon.”

Best sandals for travel

Birkenstock Arizona Sandals

“I never leave home without my Birkenstocks ,” says Ariel Kaye, CEO and founder of Parachute . “They are classic and fit me like a glove.” Kaye adds that she while also tosses a pair of her Philip Lim mule loafers in her suitcase to “add sophistication for a business meeting” or for dinner with friends, the Birkenstocks remain the “staple” that she slips on almost every single day when traveling from home.

Women's Chaco Z/1 Classic

National Geographic explorer Erika Skogg says she is a huge fan of Chacos because “you can wear them with a casual dress, take them hiking , go for long city strolls, or hang out around the campfire.” Plus, they’re weatherproof and last forever: “The only time I’ve ever had to buy a new pair is when I somehow left one sandal in a hotel room in Reykjavik.” While they may seem like a shoe that would only work in sunny locales, Skogg recommends throwing a pair of wool socks under them if the temperature dips.

Teva Original Universal Sandals (Women's)

Rose Annis, a strategist and writer for CNN’s Great Big Story, wasn’t sure if she could pull off her “ugly cute” Teva sandals. But after buying them, she fell in love. “They are incredibly comfortable, don’t rub or cause blisters, are waterproof, and I feel like the thick, sole makes them look kind of fashion-y.” Annis has worn them to explore everywhere from Oman to the Everglades and even threw them on in L.A. with a silk jumpsuit. Teva sandals were also a favorite of Strategist staffers this past summer, with both managing editor Maxine Builder and Rotunno picking up new pairs (and Rotunno using an old pair to hike the Great Wall of China).

Adidas Adilette CF+ Logo Slide Sandal

“I personally always bring a pair of Adidas foam sliders on my long-haul flights,” says Brian Kelly , the founder of travel website The Points Guy . In addition to being easy to slip on when he needs to run to the bathroom mid-flight, he says the slides are “ultra-comfortable and my ultimate lounging shoes when hanging at a resort or going to the beach.”

The quest for a cute yet comfortable shoe that can magically take you from museums to a Michelin-starred restaurant can feel never-ending. But your perfect pair is out there, and the Travel + Leisure team is putting their feet to work to help you find them.

It’s hard to tell if shoes are comfortable off the rack, and the worst way to find out is when you’re ready to put them through the paces on vacation, only to end up with blisters and aching feet. That’s why our editors have tested more than 100 pairs of shoes to find the most comfortable ones for walking long distances. We wore each pair across a span of multiple months, as we dutifully analyzed factors like their comfort levels, fit, support, breathability, durability, and more. Check out our favorite pairs below.

Best Overall

Adidas cloudfoam pure 2.0 running shoes.

These insanely comfortable shoes make you feel like you’re walking on a cloud.

The sneaker construction may be hard to dress up at night.

The comfortable and easy to throw on Cloudfoams lived up to their name during our testing process, practically sweeping us off our feet despite the fact that we never even wore socks with them. They held up on long, hilly city walks and park trails, and even put a bounce in our step with zero rubbing or foot fatigue. The stretchy top creates a flexible, cradled feeling even on slightly wider feet. With regular wear, they haven’t shown any fading or developed any odor. We were especially impressed by their low price tag and noted they were more comfortable than other shoes three times the price. As a bonus, the Cloudfoams come in more than 20 different colors/styles, so you can get the perfect match for your travel outfits, and they’re made from at least 50 percent recycled materials. Most Comfortable

Nike motiva walking shoes.

These are extremely cushioned and comfortable, propelling you forward while you walk.

The propulsion takes some getting used to, and they’re a little heavy.

We admit the Nike Motiva’s exaggerated rocker on the outsole felt a bit strange on first wear, but it quickly became the reason we love them so much. The rocker, or the curved sole, actually propels the wearer forward, which we found to be incredibly useful once we got used to it. We felt like we could literally walk in them forever thanks to a combination of the rocker, efficient cushioning, and reliable arch support. During testing, we compared the soles’ springiness and bounce-back to those of moon shoes, and although they run slightly heavy, they’re also quite flexible and bendable. The best part is that there are so many colors to choose from, including bright crimson, muted blush, classic black or white, and more.

Best Leather

Olukai leather sneakers.

A solid leather construction and good support are paired with a versatile look and foldable back for extra style opportunities.

The back tab is a little stiff at first and may rub against the heel, but should soften with time.

The Pehuea Lī ‘Ili may feel stiff out of the box, but that just shows how solid their construction is. We tried to bend them in half, and they hardly bent at all, showing that they will stay durable with quality leather and a thick, supportive sole. We loved the roomy, wide toe box and the great amount of arch support. They also have a unique collapsible backing — the back of the shoe folds down so you have the option to wear them as a slip-on and breeze through airport security without having to stop and tie your shoes. The footbed is removable and washable, and you can choose from white, black, tan, or dark brown to match your favorite neutrals. Plus, the leather makes it easy to take them from day to night without having to go back to your hotel to do a complete change.

Best Casual

New balance 574 sneaker.

The 574s have a sporty vibe and are so comfortable you may forget you have them on.

Make sure you check your sizing based on New Balance’s chart, as we found they weren’t in line with usual sneaker sizes.

If you’re in the market for a more sporty-looking, casual sneaker, these may be the best walking shoes for you. They’re so comfortable and light, you'll forget you're wearing these sneakers. They’re well-made, with solid construction, and the laces stay tied — perfect for easy, breezy walks in the park, through city blocks, and for exploring new places.

The style is one of New Balance’s classic looks. Though it may not be to everyone’s personal tastes, people looking for an easy, neutral sneaker that is well made and highly comfortable will love them. Note that available sizes may vary based on whether you choose a unisex or women-specific style (the main difference seems to be the colors). There are also wide options available in all sizes for those who need a little more space.

Best Sandals

Keen women's elle backstrap sandal.

This easy-to-wear style boasts comfortable elastic with just the right combination of stretch and security.

They don’t offer very much arch support.

The Elle is understated yet totally stylish. These shoes are extremely comfortable, and we found that they held up for miles of walking wherever your travels take you. They run true to size with the perfect amount of room at the toe and heel, and the elastic straps are very secure. Elastic can be tricky, but these sandals tackle it with ease, offering a good amount of stretch, a feeling of security, and the ability to stay in place without being too restrictive or cutting off circulation.

We did experience some minor rubbing, but it went away quickly with wear; we felt a little bit of hip and knee pressure as well, which also lessened over time. The soles are slightly cushioned for comfort, but don’t provide a lot of arch support. There’s also a good range of colors available for multiple outfits, which is always a travel bonus. You can dress them up or down with any outfit and know that your feet will be comfortable wherever the day or night takes you. They’re stylish and durable, and they’re flat, so they’re easy to pack for a trip or quick getaway.

Best for Plantar Fasciitis

They’re extremely supportive through the soles and ankles, helping alleviate foot pain during testing.

They won’t keep your feet warm on cold days.

The first thing we noticed when sliding these on was the impressive support for people with high arches. The second thing we noticed was how much wiggle room we had. Our toes could move freely without feeling cramped, but the shoes are also snug enough to stay on during high-intensity activities. And the third thing we noticed? There’s virtually no break-in period — after a few days of wear, we still had no sores, blisters, or discomfort of any kind (which is a major selling point for people who often do have foot pain or plantar fasciitis). Other features of these shoes we appreciate are the high-quality cushioning, shock absorption, ankle support, and breathability. Snag these in more than 40 hues ranging from solids to color block styles.

Best Cushioning

Asics gel-nimbus 25.

Every single step feels light and soft thanks to the cushioning.

Because of the thick cushioning, they don’t feel as stable as other styles.

Before we even tried the Asics Gel-nimbus 25 sneakers for ourselves, we’d heard about the shoes’ legendary cushioning. When we finally got to put them to the test, the sneakers more than lived up to the hype. In addition to providing serious comfort and padding around the foot, we also found the toe box to be very spacious, our heels never slipped out, and the curved soles helped propel us forward. The shoes also boast incredible shock absorption, so we felt that every step and landing was a soft one, and we didn’t feel any pain at all over weeks of wear and walking over various terrains. We also love that they come in more than two dozen unique colorways.

Bogs Holly Lace Leather Boots

These boots tackled everything we threw at them, including standing ankle-deep in a lake.

If you’re looking for something lightweight, these feel heavier than sneakers.

If you want a solid, waterproof, reasonably attractive do-it-all boot, the Holly is your best pick. We did find that they started out fairly stiff, so you may want to break them in before you travel, but they softened up during our testing period. They also aren’t very breathable (which makes sense given their waterproof construction), so you may want to reserve these for cooler weather, though we didn’t feel sweaty when wearing them. The footbeds are very cushioned and provide great arch support, and the material of the upper didn’t look scratched or dinged at all after testing. The dense rubber soles make them a little on the heavier side (though they were still comfortable to walk long periods in), but also provide grip across rougher terrain or wet conditions. They also impressively kept our feet dry even when standing ankle-deep in a lake. These practical lace-up boots make a great alternative to sneakers if that’s not your style.

Best Arch Support

Chaco women's zx2 classic sandal.

Chaco combines a funky, strappy design with a super-thick and supportive sole.

The strap adjustment system can be a little fussy, and if you have narrow feet, the straps may drag on the ground.

If you prioritize foot comfort, these are the sandals for you. They are not only incredibly supportive and sturdy, but truly have all-day comfort. Though the high level of arch support can take some getting used to, our feet felt comfortable all day and never tired; the sandals even alleviated our standing-desk-related foot pain at home. We noted some chafing from the toe loop, but it improved over the course of the break-in period.

Chaco is known for its adjustable strap system, which provides a great fit for thin feet, but achieving that perfect fit had the side effect of the straps dragging on the ground — though if you have average or wide feet, you likely won’t encounter this. We thought the quality felt superb, with a supportive, hardy sole and exceedingly comfortable arch and heel support. The sandals also come in a fun array of colors in addition to basic black, so you can wear these in multiple situations whether hiking , trekking through water, or exploring a city.

Best Lightweight

Kizik lima slip-on sneaker.

These slip-ons will keep you light on your feet with all-day sturdiness and support.

Some online reviews note that they’re not so easy to slip on hands-free.

Kizik’s Limas fit perfectly from the first wear, with nary a problem popping up even during two straight weeks of daily wear. Though their sturdiness makes them look heavy, they feel light while still being supportive. They’re also super breathable and airy, which is great for long, sweaty travel days. We thought they felt true to size, with a nicely spacious toe box. After wearing them for hours, we noted they had consistent arch support throughout the day, as well as excellent traction across various weather conditions and types of terrain. As an extra travel bonus, they’re also designed to easily slip on and off without having to use your hands, though some online reviews note that they’re not always easy for everyone to slip on.

Best Traction

Merrell speed eco.

These comfortable hikers are light and breezy, and will give you great support and traction.

They have a sportier appearance and not a lot of ankle support for heavy hiking.

When you’re hitting tougher terrain, you need shoes with a little more grip. Opt for the Merrell Speed Eco if you’re going out on the trail or spending the day walking on dirt rather than concrete. They were super comfortable straight out of the box, even paired with thin, everyday socks, and our feet felt supported the entire time. The material feels durable and high-end, as well as extremely breathable, and they offer good arch support no matter where you’re walking. While they’ve gathered a little dust, they stayed in great condition during our hikes and still look almost brand-new even after five months of testing. Do note that if you’re doing more hardcore hiking , though, that they don’t have a lot of ankle support.

Best Waterproof

Sam edelman laguna chelsea boot.

Sam Edelman

These boots combine style and protection from the elements.

It takes a few wears to break them in against stiffness.

It’s always nice to have a rain boot that isn’t just a piece of plastic. Sam Edelman’s Lagunas are sturdy, stylish, and extremely supportive, making an excellent option when you want to walk around in something other than a sneaker. They do take a while to break in, but they feel stiff, not painful at all during that break-in period. They offer a lot of traction and water-repelling ability — we felt no wetness seeping through even when standing in a puddle that covered the entire top of the shoe. We stayed dry after tramping through city puddles, and the boots still managed to look nice afterward, too.

Travel + Leisure / Taylor Calta

We tested upwards of 50 pairs of shoes in our search for the most comfortable women’s walking shoes. The process started straight from the unboxing, when we picked up each shoe and tried to bend it in the middle to evaluate its level of arch support. We then assessed each pair for flexibility, material and construction quality, and weight.

Each shoe then got a minimum of three test wears of different durations: 30 minutes, three hours, and eight hours. During the 30-minute test, we noted ease of wear, fit, and any rubbing, redness, or feelings of restriction. After three hours, we also added an evaluation of whether the shoes seemed to be forming to our feet and how they fared on various surfaces. Then during the eight-hour test, we checked again if they were starting to feel more comfortable and whether the shoes felt flimsy over the course of the day. We continued to wear the shoes as often as possible during the rest of the testing period, discontinuing if they became painful.

We’ve also integrated the results of three other shoe tests: our tests for the best slip-ons , waterproof boots , and hiking shoes . Slip-ons were subjected to the bend test and then worn at least five to seven times for a minimum of five hours on different types of terrain. In our waterproof boot tests, we wore each pair of boots around for an hour to break them in. Then, we wore them on at least two outings of one to two hours in duration, ideally in wet conditions, focusing on fit and comfort, traction, and breathability. If the weather simply didn’t cooperate, we stuffed a boot with paper towels and ran it under a steady stream of water, then examined the paper filling to assess its water-repelling capabilities. Hiking shoes received similar tests — minus the shower — with an examination, a one-hour break-in, and at least two hikes.

We wore each pair of shoes out and about for six months to see how they held up long-term, and we will continue to update this article as we test even more comfortable walking shoes.

Other Walking Shoes We Liked

Here are a few more pairs of shoes that we liked, though they didn't make our main list due to some issues found during testing.

Allbirds Wool Runners : These Allbirds regularly top most comfortable shoe lists, but we found a few flaws that kept them from making it into our top picks. They’re very comfortable and good for long periods of walking. The sole is thick and provides good arch support, but it was still thin enough that the heel warped easily due to lack of lining and wouldn’t stand up to regular slipping on and off. We felt that the shoes were quite delicate and shouldn't be worn in any type of moisture or in very warm weather.

Travel + Leisure / Taylor Fox

Vessi Women’s Everyday Classics : These shoes were also comfortable out of the box but did have some friction under the laces at the end of long wears. The sole is lightweight but sturdy and adequately supportive, but we didn’t like that they aren’t available in half sizes and looked extremely wide when on. They’re also not particularly versatile style-wise: they lean slightly orthopedic-looking because of the cloud-like sole design, and we don’t think these are stylish enough to dress up.

Travel + Leisure / Skye Senterfeit

Kizik Roamers : These kicks were stylish and extremely shock absorbent — plus, they fit us great. However, we weren’t fans of how heavy they are. The laces also kept coming untied no matter how tight we tied them, which made us feel like we’d rarely reach for these if they were in our closet.

Tips for Buying Comfortable Women’s Walking Shoes

Prioritize comfort and support.

We know looking cute is important, but don’t let vanity ruin your vacation! Your travel shoes should be comfortable above all else.

“Rule of thumb is that if you can take a shoe and bend it in the middle very easily without much force, then the shoe is too flimsy and not supportive enough,” says podiatrist Cory Clement. "This can lead to conditions like heel and arch pain, aka plantar fasciitis, due to the decrease in support and lessened shock absorption.”

Consider versatility

You only have so much luggage space, especially if you’re committed to the carry-on lifestyle . Ideally, you only want to bring three, maybe four, pairs of shoes total, so make sure they can go everywhere you want, especially if you’re going to be out and about from breakfast to dinner without a chance to change. If you look for versatile pairs of shoes that you can wear during the day but also while going out at night, you won't have to pack as many.

Think about how you plan to use them

What are you planning to do during your trip? Are you lounging on the beach most of the day (look for sandals), or will you be pounding the cobblestone pavement (you'll want something supportive)? What’s the climate like where you’re going? You may want something more lightweight and breathable for warm weather and something with grippy soles for rainy climates (and a waterproof walking shoe if you will be exposed to the elements). Do you tend to visit five-star fine dining establishments or prefer a pick-up window? A stylish pair of sneakers can take you a lot of places, but not quite everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answer: comfortably. Your foot should feel supported but not stifled, and you should have room to comfortably wiggle your toes.

“Women’s and men’s travel shoes should have a firm heel counter and shouldn’t bend in the middle,” Clement says. “Also check the toe box of the shoe. If it is too narrow, this can lead to discomfort and crowding leading to sore toes and corns.”

You can break in walking shoes by wearing them around the house for a week or two before your trip. The best travel shoes will be the ones that keep you most comfortable for the longest period of time.

First, try Clement’s bend test. Once you’ve established that they don’t bend in the middle, check that the sole is made of a firm material that won’t wear out over time. You can also look for a physically upraised arch on the shoe, but this doesn’t necessarily guarantee support. If you’re shopping online, look for a seal of approval from the APMA and known supportive brands.

If your shoes aren’t very technical, yes, but keep in mind that different categories of shoes are designed to maximize different features. Hiking shoes with extra-grippy lugs for dirt, for example, won’t be as good for walking on pavement and will likely also feel much heavier than a pair of walking shoes. More highly engineered running shoes, meanwhile, encourage your feet to move in a way that’s more conducive to speed and a runner’s gait (less stability, more springiness), so they won't always provide the right padding if you’re moving at a slower pace.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

For this story, Rena Behar summarized the testing notes and data from multiple T+L editors, who conducted extensive feet-on testing of the shoes. They also utilized their own experience as professional gear reviewers, frequent travelers, and compulsive hunters of both cute and comfortable shoes. The 10 Best Travel Shoes for Men

We found the best footwear for staying comfortable and lightweight while you transit, sightsee, and relax at your destination.

best travel shoes

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

You likely can't fit your entire shoe rack from home , so we found the best travel shoes for men to keep you comfy walking on cobblestone streets for tours of European cities, dry after taking a plunge in the water, and looking good for date night at the resort.

Whether you have an itinerary in place for the trip or prefer to go with the flow and see where your destination takes you, you’re going to be on your feet and exploring once you get there. Travel shoes should be comfortable enough to run from TSA to your gate, kick off in the camper van when you’re not driving, and look stylish when you’re taking all of those vacation pics. The best travel shoes for men are comfortable, stylish, and versatile.

What to Consider

Comfort is key, especially when you're traveling and don't have the space for an array of footwear options for each activity you plan on doing. Think about the shoes you wear most when you have to be on your feet all day—you need a pair that gives you good support, while remaining lightweight for both walkability and packing purposes.

Sneakers offer more cushioned insoles than boots, but beware of flat sneakers like Converse and Vans as these work for some but lack arch support and may cause pain for those with high arches. If you find that you need more support but love the style of flat shoes, consider using a pair of insoles if there's a big day of walking planned.

Destination and Materials

Keep in mind the destination. An easy pair of canvas slip-ons will work great for a beach getaway, but if you're going to be out sightseeing you'll want soles that can handle slick pavement and uppers that can get wet without soaking through to your socks.

Materials like synthetic knit-mesh are good for warm places because they're breathable and dry fast, but these materials typically aren't water-resistant, so if you're caught in a city downpour you'll be dealing with wet socks. Weatherproofed leather is a good all-purpose material and—in the case of the Blundstones we recommend—it's available in lighter weights than rigid leather boots like these Red Wings . It's worthwhile to check the weather of your destination before you leave—comfy suede sneakers are great in transit, for instance, but a bummer if you plan on walking a rainy city for the next couple of days.

After figuring what you need comfort-wise, you can decide the style of shoe you ought to pack. They should be versatile enough to go with what you’re going to wear on the different activities you have planned—trips usually mean pictures, and while a pair of slippers may be the most comfortable on the plane, you probably don’t want to wear them in the annual family photo. Taking two pairs of shoes will see most people through a vacation: one sturdy pair for physical activities like walking and hiking, and one casual pair for exploring city spots like museums, nice restaurants, or theaters.

How We Selected

We considered the different ways people travel and what they look for when packing for weekend getaways or extended trips abroad. Noting pairs that were frequently recommended from reputable travel outlets like Tripadvisor and Travel + Leisure, we gathered a variety of shoes that are comfortable, versatile, and fit for different destinations from mountain hikes to beaches to city plazas.

We pared it down based on hands-on experience with a range of men's shoes for travel and made sure to include different price points and styles. I've personally tried almost all of these shoes on the list except the Crocs (I'm a man of style, after all) and can speak to the comfort, functionality, and versatility no matter your destination.

Blundstone Original 500 Boot for Men

Original 500 Boot for Men

When someone says, “This is the only blank you’ll need,” I typically roll my eyes, because variety is fun—but the Blundstone 500 boots really could be the last I ever wear. They’re lightweight, require no break-in period, and are durable enough to last through years of trips—for me, more than six years.

These boots are comfortable enough for walking the city (although you might want to throw some insoles in there if you have high arches) and they hold up to day hikes. The laid-back style is easy to dress up or down and slip on and off for airport security or giving your feet a break on long car rides.

They're a bit cumbersome to pack so I typically wear them in transit, but if they need to go in a bag you can lay them down and fill them with smaller items like socks, underwear, or tees.

I've worn my 500s walking around city squares in Spain, hiking in Greece, and dirt biking in New Mexico. They're a little beat up after all that wear, but I won't be getting rid of them anytime soon since they're still my go-to travel shoes.

Crocs Classic Clogs for Travel

Classic Clogs for Travel

Crocs used to be house shoes, but you've probably started noticing them in airport terminals and at vacation resorts because they're easy to kick off and comfortable enough for long travel.

The heel strap offers more support and stability than regular sandals, but they're breathable thanks to the perforated design. Even better, they keep your toes covered at the same time, offering more protection from dust or rocks and airline food cart wheels. They work great as water shoes, but make sure to use that heel strap to keep them from floating off your feet.

They're available in almost 40 different colors so you can go as loud or subdued as you want. There's also an all-terrain model if you want to use them on a short hike or as daily shoes. It upgrades the original by adding a rugged sole for extra tread, along with better arch support, while staying lightweight and breathable.

These only thing stopping me from traveling in my Crocs is my personal style hang-up, but if comfort and convenience are at the top of your list, these extremely comfortable shoes are a great option.

Hoka Clifton L Suede Men's Sneakers for Travel

Clifton L Suede Men's Sneakers for Travel

Hoka is known for making great running shoes, but its ingenuity in design and comfort carries over to its lifestyle sneakers as well. The Cliftons are one of the brand's most popular running shoes, and here it's tweaked the model for a comfortable pair you'll want to wear everyday.

It has a high, plushy EVA footbed that feels more comfortable than any other casual shoe I've tried. They feel as lightweight as the Rincon 3s I run in, but offer noticeably more cushioning. The suede uppers and monochromatic details make them easy to wear with jeans, trousers, or shorts, so they're perfect for trips when you want one pair of shoes that can take you from a day of sightseeing to a night on the town.

Their grippy sole doesn't slip on slick crosswalks when I get caught in the rain, but the suede is a drawback on these, since it'll get ruined in the rain. The classic lace-up style may be a hassle for some, but I keep them laced loose and pull them on and off with the heel pull-tab.

Merrell Jungle Moc Slip-On Shoe

Jungle Moc Slip-On Shoe

Slip-on shoes are convenient for travel, but many options lack support. The Jungle Mocs have the same support you'd expect from tennis shoes, but with a beefed-up outsole and extra cushioning in the heel—perfect for lots of walking.

The leather uppers have two small elastic panels on either side of the instep for pulling them on and off easily, and reviews report you can slip into them “single-footedly” without bending down.

They come with a pair of removable insoles so you can throw in your own if you prefer. The Jungle Mocs give you the convenience you want from a slip-on with the support you need.

New Balance Fresh Foam Cruzv1 Reissue Men's Walking Shoes

Fresh Foam Cruzv1 Reissue Men's Walking Shoes

New Balance’s trademarked Fresh Foam midsole is extra cushiony and offers more support than other mesh sneaker options. The grippy gum sole gives these sneakers a retro look that pairs easily with casual wear, and the flexible mesh upper makes them easy to stuff in your bag.

These shoes are super lightweight, but the upper’s mesh material isn’t suited for rough terrain, so don’t take these out if you plan on hiking any rocky paths. They’re great for cities or beaches, and their breathability makes them a good option for warm weather.

These fit smaller than my regular sneaker size, so I’d suggest sizing up a half size. Some customers say they prefer the snug fit as they like to wear them without socks, which works since they’re airy and flexible enough to prevent heel rub blisters.

Vans Classic Slip-On Travel Shoes for Men

Classic Slip-On Travel Shoes for Men

Many people have their favorite style from Vans’s expansive selection, but the classic slip-on is its most travel-friendly. You can wear these with or without socks, they’re easy to pack, and last a surprisingly long time for their simple construction.

The canvas uppers last a few years, and when it's time to replace them, they won't hurt your wallet too much. If you have high arches, these don't provide enough support for long walking days. They're also narrow, so we don't recommend them for folks with wide feet. Adding some insoles improves support if you want to wear these for the bulk of your trip.

I use mine in transit, but I need more cushion if I'm going to be on my feet sightseeing. They're a great airport shoe and easy to pull on for pit stops while roadtripping, but I prefer more support if I'm wearing them for a long period of time.

Birkenstock Boston Clogs With Super-Grip Sole for Traveling

Boston Clogs With Super-Grip Sole for Traveling

Birkenstock's Boston clogs are often styled as house shoes or casual wear because they're both comfortable and versatile. Both the leather upper and the cork footbed mold to the wearer's foot over time, providing a custom fit that can be worn with or without socks. This model adds a heavier-duty sole than the original style for added traction and durability.

Bostons are packable and easy to kick on and off, so traveling in them is a breeze. They provide enough support if you plan to land and immediately start knocking out some must-see spots.

The cork footbed does require a short break-in period, so if you want to travel with these, you should wear them around first so the footbed can mold to your foot. Since your heel is exposed, these won’t do well in the rain, so only wear them if you know you’re in for good weather.

Clarks Desert Chukka Boot

Desert Chukka Boot

Anthony Bourdain typically sported a pair of Clark's desert boots while filming his show Parts Unknown , and the man knew what he was talking about when it came to versatility and comfort.

The soft leather uppers don’t need to be broken in on these boots, and they fold over for easy packing. The simple, two-eyelet lacing gives you a secure fit, but they’re easy to kick off and back on in a snap. The crepe sole—made of coagulated latex—is comfortable and pliable, but doesn’t offer a lot of traction, so I wouldn’t recommend wearing them when it rains.

I have a pair that’s a half-size smaller than my typical size to account for the suede stretching over time, and after breaking in, they fit perfectly and I can wear them comfortably all day long. These aren’t work boots, but they’re surprisingly durable and shockingly lightweight.

I wear mine casually, but I’ve toted them on a couple of camping trips, and after nine years they’re still going strong. I’ve only needed to replace the laces a couple of times, but they are the weakest point of these shoes. If you want something that'll hold up better in rain try the Bushacre chukka as it has a rubber sole and leather uppers.

Teva Hurricane XLT2 Sandals

Hurricane XLT2 Sandals

The Hurricanes are the perfect sandal for adventuring because they can serve as a water shoe, are comfortable for short hikes, and have a grippy traction sole. The straps have a hook-and-loop closure that ensure a secure fit but that are easy to take on and off, and the padded heel strap gives your ankle extra support.

Since your toes are exposed you shouldn't use these for any treacherous terrain where you'll be dealing with jagged rocks, but they're a great choice for day hikes or anything that's around water. They can also easily be thrown into a backpack if you plan to only use them once you get to where you're going.

Allbirds Wool Runners

Wool Runners

All-birds uses a eucalyptus fiber for mesh knit uppers that feel smooth on the skin and allow for maximum breathability. They're lightweight for travel and customers say the insoles and midsole provide enough support to be comfortable on your feet all day.

Merino wool is known for it's moisture-wicking and odor-resistant properties so your feet won't overheat. When it comes time to clean them you can simply throw them in the wash and let them air dry. Some customers found that these run small and suggest going up a half size.

The best travel shoes are a lot like walking shoes : they're built with a level of comfort so you can stand and walk in them for hours. But unlike most walking shoes, a solid pair of travel shoes is much more cushioned, and are also easier to pack into your suitcase. That means they come in clutch if you're dashing at the airport, or lounging at the hotel lobby.

What to Consider

The most important factor is a combination of comfort and support. You don't want to wear toasty slippers if you're driving in the car or trekking through the airport, and you don't need to wear some lace-up hiking boots to get the best support possible. Some travel shoes can lean more on comfort (Oofos, Hoka), while others can lean more towards support (Amberjack, Blundstone). The key is to find a happy medium here and get what suits you and the travel situation at hand the best. For example, if you're taking a long flight to another country, it's probably best to aim for more comfort-leaning travel. But if you're making a drive to a weekend getaway, a shoe with more support (and a tougher build) will likely serve as a better choice.

Packability

Unless you plan on wearing a bigger shoe en route to your destination, your travel shoes should be packable. Certain shoes fit better into different sizes of luggage. To assist in the packing process, we assessed which type of travel bag is the ideal minimal size for packing each shoe: Backpack , Carry-On , or Checked Bag . The criteria used were weight, size, and how easily each shoe could be compressed or folded without looking funky once you arrive at your destination. For example, the Amberjack Original is lightweight for a dress shoe but doesn't compress or fold up, so it should go in a carry on bag, at least.

Travel shoes should also be lightweight, and yes, boots can be lightweight too. Dodge any shoe that's got heavy outsoles and avoid materials that are thick and trap heat. Instead, opt for shoes with foam builds and breathable construction.

How We Selected

We consulted with Men's Health writers and editors on the best travel shoes for men in 2024. Experts, including our gear and commerce editor, John Thompson, reviewed a number of travel shoes and evaluated their comfort, weight, and packability. We also considered price point, as some travel shoes promise a better overall value than others

Below, we rounded up the best travel shoes for all types of jet-setting needs. The picks might not all look like they belong in the same boat, but when you see how they all fit, you'll find each travel shoe we selected serves a unique purpose. Ready to see what's in store?

As it turns out, all it took to make this cozy house slipper into a great travel shoe was a suede upgrade. Lusso Cloud has been producing a range of comfortable slippers and casual slides for years now. With a proprietary three layer sole, every pair offers foamy cushioning, along with a springy bounce. The inside contains a lush fabric that feel great on your feet.

Now that the Nomad, one of the startup's bestsellers, comes in a brushed suede upper. It has transitioned from lounge apparel to the ultimate in-transit shoes. The heel has a fold down feature, which not only turns the shoe into a mule, it makes for easy flat packing. It gives off the elevated appearance of a plain toe loafer, and who doesn't like to look their best while traveling?

After having some experience with the original model, we had to take this upgrade for a spin. After a train trip that took over an hour each way, and a few hours spend sitting at a desk, the cushioning held up strong. Where the Lusso Ckoud really shines is on the move. The specially designed outsole has a touch of bounce, similar to a running shoe, while feeling as light as a house slipper on your feet.

Oofos is most known for its out-of-this-world recovery slides , but the brand has since expanded into other footwear styles. This slip-on shoe style packs top-tier cushioning with a breathable upper that can be taken on and off with ease. We like sliding these bad boys on for long flights as well as for general lounging shoes for wherever your accommodations might be (hopefully a resort somewhere exotic).

The two occasions where this travel shoe really shines is during airline travel and while staying at warm weather resorts. Whether you like to keep your toes contained during long flights or set them free, this is the right footwear for the job. The light and airy design is great for warm weather because it breaths so well and minimizes stress on your feet. If water is involved, this slip-on also dries very quickly.

The Ravello Loafer could be described as a house slipper disguised as a loafer, and we mean that in the best way possible. Constructed from a soft textile upper and a flexible rummer outsole, you get the cozy feel of your favorite lounge shoes, but dressier. Even though it isn't leather, Rothys checked all the necessary boxes with this loafer. It pulls off business casual and cocktail attire with ease.

This is the ideal shoe for summer destination weddings because you don't have to pack any other footwear, except maybe some sandals . You can wear this loafer while traveling, especially if a flight is involved, and you can also wear it with a light summer suits . Doing any sight seeing while you're there? This comfy slip on is supportive enough to walk around in all day.

Designed for work, yet cozy enough for play, the Snibbs ROVR is an ideal travel sneaker because it provides all-day comfort. Chef Daniel Schemtob consulted with two doctors to design a lifestyle shoe that can be worn in hot and slipper work environments. The resulting sneaker is not only optimized for restaurant workers and medical professionals, it benefits anyone who spends most of the day on their feet. For example; a tourist who wants to pack all the major sights of a city into a single trip.

A knit mesh upper is lightweight and breathable to combat sweaty feet. Under that, an EVA molded midsole provides ample cushion and bounce in every step. Designed to slip on and off, the upper hugs your foot like a sock. It can even handle those mad dashes to catch your connecting flight.

Some brands really do make 'em like they used to. The Portuguese shoemaker is new to the American market by way of an exclusive partnership with Huckberry. A soft leather interior and padded footbed are meant to go barefoot. With a waxy finish on the upper, there is minor water resistance.

Thanks to a classic leather plain toe look, this travel slip-on works with a wide variety of looks. We like to wear it with everything, from a casual chino suit to swim trunks .

What really sets this mule apart is the crepe outsole. You typically find the material on desert boots and the odd chelsea boot , but it is actually ideal for a travel shoe. The spongy composite is shock absorbing and provides an almost sticky grip. When it wears out—which will happen sooner than later—it is the cheapest type of sole to replace.

Espadrilles are a type of footwear, originating in Spain, with a cotton canvas upper sewn to a woven jute sole. Jute is a rope made from braided plant fiber, similar to hemp. It makes for a light, durable, and supportive footbed that is breathable and naturally moisture regulating. All of these factors make espadrilles perfectly suited for warm weather travel, especially at beaches, lakes, and pools.

Soludos is one of the few major brands still selling authentic espadrilles with real jute soles. Every pair is handcrafted in a way that makes them repairable when any wear and tear occurs. The Seville Smoking Slipper has a cotton canvas upper with a classic slipper shape that comes in a variety of colors and patterns, making for easy vacation styling. Stowing this slipper away is even easier, as it flattens to take up about as much room as a pair of flip-flops.

Hey Dude has taken men's footwear by storm over the past couple of years. The shoes are also super easy to throw on, making them a pair of great summer shoes. Best of all is the fact it is insanely affordable too. Simply put, don't knock 'em until you try 'em.

As long as the attire is casual, there really is no wrong setting for this low-key slip-on. Relaxed vibes are practically sewn right into the sole. However, if you're headed to a watery local, like a beach, lake, or water park, then Hey Dudes really shine. The cushy sole floats in water, so that avoids any sinking mishaps. The whole shoe also dries off very quickly, so it as about as water friendly as a shoe can get.

Dress shoes for traveling can actually be comfortable. Take this pair of oxfords from Amberjack. Named The Original, this shoe is built with heat-activated arch support, durable outsoles, and breathable upper materials (especially suede). Best of all is the fact it can be worn with business casual fits and with more formal business attire.

Think of this travel shoe as optimizing your business trips. The dual density outsole, which is softer in the heel for cushioning and harder at the arch for support, is built to handle extensive walking. If you have to sprint to catch a train, hike from security to your gate, or show out on the dance floor, this is the oxford you want to be wearing.

If you're going for cushioning, then a pair of Hoka's latest Clifton 9 running shoes will serve you right. The Clifton line has been a staple for our fitness editorsm thanks to its lightweight build and supreme level of comfort. When paired up with something dressier, like a loafer for warm weather or an oxford for cooler temperatures, you can cover pretty much any travel situation with.

It won't necessarily pack well in a travel backpack or personal item because of its high-stack cushioning, but if you wear it from point A to point B, you can also double up and have them as a walking shoe or workout shoe on your trip. In fact, it's entirely possible you could go on an entire trip with just this pair of shoes if you really wanted to one-bag-travel the whole thing.

Wearing your favorite boots while you travel is a simple hack to free up space in your suitcase. So which pair of boots are the best? We're big on Blundstones. The #585 is tough as nails, comfortable as heck (with little to no break-in period), and easy to slip on and off. As a Chelsea boot, it pairs well with jeans or chinos for an on-the-go outfits. You can get at least a week out of a couple pairs of pants and a few shirts with this single shoe.

If cold temperatures and precipitation are in the forecast for your vacation, this rugged Chelsea boot will serve you well. The upper is waterproof and the outsole provides slip-resistant traction. While this travel boot isn't insulted, when paired with a good boot sock , it is very warm. Any mud or dirt can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth, to avoid bringing any mess along for the next leg of your adventure.

What Else to Consider

Versatility.

Regardless of where your personal needs lie, your travel shoes must be versatile. You don't want to wear them once on the plane and then never again on your trip. That's just dead weight. Hence the reason why our travel shoes above can feel a bit like a mixed bag. Some of our travel shoe picks are great for lounging once you get to your destination, while others are made to power through your entire trip, whether it be a formal dinner event or a day full of walking.

16 Tried-And-True Travel Shoes (for Walking All Day)

Three sets of men's travel shoes resting on the bumper of a van

Smart travelers know the value of great shoes. When you’re on your feet all day — whether it’s hiking a trail or walking neighborhoods in a new city — your footwear can make an enormous difference. That’s why I’m here to report on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for walking all day.

I’m a minimalist and typically only take one or two pairs of shoes on the road. My ideal travel shoes are stylish, lightweight, and comfortable all day long. In the summer, I look for more breathable and lightweight shoes, and in winter, I crave warmth and durability.

I’ve worked at REI and traveled extensively in Europe for business and personal endeavors, so I know a thing or two about footwear that’s built for walking all day. I’m happy to share my findings on such brands as Allbirds, Lems, Xero, SeaVees, and Blundstone, as these companies make some truly stellar kicks.

This list includes sneakers, loafers, slip-ons, athletic shoes, and a few sandals that I’ve evaluated for comfort, style, packability, and other key factors.

Travel is back in a big way, so let’s dive headfirst into my list of the best men’s and women’s travel shoes money can buy.

Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

  • Best All-Around: Allbirds Tree Runners

  • Unbreakable Flip Flops: Rainbow Double Layer
  • Hiking Sandals: Teva Universal
  • Considerations for Travel Shoes & Sandals
  • Final Thoughts: Best Travel Shoes for Men & Women

Best All-Around Allbirds Tree Runners

Allbirds Tree Runners

I’m a huge fan of the Allbirds Tree Runners. They come in a wide variety of colors, and you’ll love their breathability and packability. You’ll have no problem squishing them down flat and tying them to the side of your backpack or even stuffing them into the water bottle pocket.

I criss-crossed Europe in my Allbirds and washed them several times. They held up great! The best thing about Allbirds is how lightweight they are. They’re perfect for walking all day, thanks to the stretchy material that molds to your feet.

If you’re looking for responsibly sourced and comfortable all-day shoes, I can highly recommend the Allbirds.

Best Slip-Ons SeaVees Huntington Middie

SeaVees Huntington Middie comfortable travel slip-ons

Want a slightly more stylish option than the Allbirds? The SeaVees Huntington Middie is my favorite slip-on shoe for travel. The high top and suede material make them easy to dress up or down.

SeaVees are perfect travel companions. I love the simple, minimalistic look they bring to any outfit, so they look great day and night.

Plus, they’re super comfortable and easy to slip on and off. Quite a few online reviewers say SeaVees aren’t just a travel shoe but also a go-to everyday casual shoe.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes Lems Primal Zen

Black and gray Lems brand barefoot men's shoe

I recommend the Lems Primal Zens for the zero-drop traveler because they’re lightweight, versatile, and minimalist, making them excellent travel shoes.

Travel is hard on the body, and some people prefer the benefits of a zero-drop shoe with the natural fit and feel that promotes healthy walking habits. In comparison, traditional shoes can produce an unnatural gait that increases the likelihood of injury.

These Lems can handle anything – from running, hiking, working out, and walking. Their versatility and durability make them perfect for a new adventure every day when traveling.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Boots Lems Boulder Vegan

Lems Boulder Vegan barefoot boots

Traveling in the fall or winter? I’d opt for Lems’ Boulder Vegan Boots. The neutral colors go with any outfit, and they pack down to a size of a puff jacket, making them an easy must-carry.

Lems is a vegan-friendly Colorado brand that strives to make responsibly produced and sustainable footwear. They use recycled products to create new materials and also partner with a non-profit.

The Lems cork footbed molds to your feet and has a wide toebox, so this zero-drop style is perfect for travelers who are on their feet all day. You have a choice of materials to help you find the one that best matches your travel needs.

All-Purpose Sneakers Reebok Classic

White Reebok Classic all-purpose sneakers

If you’re a fan of sneakers, the Reebok Classic offers excellent support and comes in an array of colors and styles.

The downside to these shoes is their limited packability and versatility. Compared to others on this list, the Reebok Classics don’t pack down as small and don’t dress up as easily for attending those special dinner events.

I love these Reeboks because they’re highly functional and will take you to your destination in comfy sneaker style.

Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons Xero Sunrise

Grey ultralight slip-ons for travel

The Xero Sunrise slip-ons are the lightest and most packable shoe on this list. Weighing in at a ridiculous 5.6 ounces each (men’s size medium), these were designed for those who want a comfortable shoe to slide into when it’s time to chill.

Though I don’t recommend climbing a mountain in these or donning them during a 30,000-step marathon around the city, I do think they’d work perfectly for a relaxing night on the town, strolling around a farmers market, or kicking your feet up by the pool.

From experience, I can tell you these are about as comfortable, cozy, and convenient as travel shoes come these days. For my more relaxed trips, they’ll make it into my travel bag every single time.

Trail Running Shoes Salomon Wander

Black Salomon Wander footwear for trail running and high-volume walking

The Salomon Wander is made for trail running but also works quite well as a travel shoe. They’re versatile for active travelers who like to walk, run, and hike all day, every day.

These shoes have ample cushion that makes long walks in the city easier on your knees, but they aren’t quite as stylish as some and don’t dress up as easily.

Salomon is a trusted and well-reviewed brand, and their Wander is a fine addition to their respected product line. If you spend all day on your feet, look no further.

Stylish Hiking Shoes Merrell Burnt Rock

Merrell Burnt Rock hiking shoes

I love the Merrell Burnt Rock because they’re so stylish. These are ideal for travelers who like to hit the trail occasionally but also know they’ll spend most of their time in the city.

The Burnt Rock comes in various colors, and their earth-toned palette makes them about as versatile of a shoe as you’ll find on this list. The mixture of suede and mesh make them breathable like a sneaker, but with style.

Flip the shoe over and you’ll find a beautiful rubber outsole for reliable traction, yet these don’t look like hiking shoes.

Tough Fitness Kicks GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

GORUCK Ballistic Trainers

Are you an active traveler who pushes most shoes to their limits? Or someone who will work out CrossFit-style before racing off to see the sights? Then I wholeheartedly recommend the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers.

The Ballistic Trainers are designed for the traveler who puts their shoes through hell. They’re extra supportive, with tough nylon uppers and durable triple compound rubber. These shoes are seriously durable.

Not only are they built to last, but also are stylish and versatile enough for any casual travel. They’re low-profile sneakers in neutral colors that can be paired with any casual clothing. The GORUCK Ballistic Trainers make for a perfect travel shoe for the always-on-the-move traveler.

Men’s Dress Shoes Florsheim Oxford

Florsheim Oxford men's dress footwear

For men who like to travel in style, the Florsheim Oxfords are ideal shoes for looking good all day and night. I recommend these for business commuters who need to balance professionalism with their active lifestyle.

The Oxfords have a very classic, minimalist style. Their Ortholite X-40 rebound foam soles deliver non-stop comfort no matter how long you’re on your feet.

The Florsheim Oxford is a quality dress shoe that won’t break your budget. Traveling for work is often tiring, but these shoes will cushion your feet and keep the spring in your step.

Women’s Dress Shoes Rothy’s The Point

Rothy’s The Point slip-on women's dress shoes

Rothy’s is a high-quality brand that’s known for transforming recycled plastic bottles into simple, stylish shoes. They have classic silhouettes and a variety of styles to match your personality.

Why have I included them on this list? Not only are they simple and packable, but they’re designed to be washed. I’ve had mine for years, and even after several washes, they look as good as new.

While they cost a bit more, the material quality and durability are well worth the price. For businesswomen on their feet all day, these are the stylish flats you’ve been wanting.

Slip-On Chelsea Boots Blundstone 550

Blundstone 550 leather slip-on chelsea boots

These are my go-to winter travel shoes — versatile and stylish slip-on Chelsea boots that are easy to love. Yes, they’re one of the more expensive options here, but well worth the investment.

If I was traveling and could only bring one pair of shoes, I’d bring these. I can work, hike, or walk all day in them with no problem. Compared to the Lems, the Blundstone 550 are more durable and rugged. They do get a bit hot in warmer climates, so consider the low cuts.

Caution: Blundstone is an Australian brand, and AU and US sizes differ slightly. For example, at REI the boot size on the box is AU sizing but the size selection tool on the website is US sizing. Make sure you’re ordering the right size.

Minimalist Barefoot Sandals Luna Oso Flaco Winged Edition

best european travel shoes

If you’re traveling to a warm climate and have little need to dress up, I’d recommend the Luna Oso Flaco. In another post, I chose these as the top minimalist barefoot sandal , due to their many excellent qualities for active travelers on the go.

Weighing under one pound per pair, these are lightweight as well as super-compact. You’ll barely notice them in your suitcase or backpack.

The Oso Flaco sandals are the best zero-drop option for travelers who want to connect with the earth. Their lightweight and rugged sole makes them a great choice for your adventures.

Classy Slide-On Sandals Birkenstock Arizona

Birkenstock Arizona comfortable slide-on travel sandals

Our favorite versatile slide-on sandals are the Birkenstock Arizonas. These are a classic style that has transitioned from dorky to stylish over the years.

I sometimes travel in summer with friends who also wear these shoes. We all agree that they’re ultra-comfortable and perfect for all-day treks in the city. Whether you wake up in hostels or highrise hotels, these are reliable urban cruisers.

One caveat, however: on hot, sweaty days in these sandals, my feet sometimes get blisters, so I’ll usually opt for sneakers instead. Other than that, I love my Birkenstocks for traveling.

Unbreakable Flip-Flops Rainbow Double Layer

Rainbow Double Layer flip flops

Rainbows are flip-flops built for the long haul. But be sure to break these in before your trip. They may be uncomfortable at first, but once they mold to your feet, you’ll never want to take them off.

I know people who have worn these for years and swear by them. As with some of the other shoes on this list, these are quite flat and packable. The two shoes sandwiched together are about the thickness of a paperback book.

The Rainbow product guarantee covers all manufacturing defects for life, no matter how old. This lifetime replacement policy is another reason to love these traveler favorites.

Hiking Sandals Teva Universal

Teva Universal sandal for men and women

Want a more substantial and supportive sandal than the Bedrocks? I’d point you to the Teva Universal Sandal — versatile, classic, and more affordable.

These come in several neutral colors that simplify dress-up. I had a pair with copper-colored straps that paired easily with dresses I wore for a summer in Italy.

Teva Universals are lightweight and can be easily stowed. Save space by using their Velcro straps to fasten them to the outside of your backpack.

Criteria for Travel Shoes & Sandals

Shoes flipped upside down showing black soles with the Lems brand logo

This list reflects several key factors you should consider before packing your suitcase with travel shoes. Some may be more relevant than others, based on your travel needs.

No matter where you’re going, your shoes must always be comfortable, especially when the steps start to pile up. Treat your feet right by carefully considering the cushioning and breathability.

An ill-fitting pair of shoes can be distracting and even painful at times, so do your do diligence as you research shoes, read reviews, and reference the sizing guide to ensure you get the right fit.

Styling is important if a shoe is to be truly versatile. I lean more towards minimalist sneakers if I’ll be going to museums all day followed by a relaxing dinner at night. Save space in your suitcase by packing a style that complements as many of your outfits and activities as possible.

We’ve done our best to pick a wide array of shoes that will look good on anyone, and have strayed away from the dorky Rick Steves dad sneakers of the past. (Sorry, Rick.)

Laced vs. Slip-On

I often pack one pair of laced and one pair of slip-on shoes for ease of use and comfort (slip-ons) and athletic performance (laced). There are other styles to consider, too, like boots and sandals, so do your research and choose what’s best for you.

I usually wear my slip-ons for more leisurely activities and wear laced kicks for more high-intensity activities that call for more foot and ankle support.

Breathability

When you’re a high-intensity traveler who puts in a lot of steps , you need a set of footwear that’ll release the body heat that your feet produce. Otherwise, you’re looking at clammy, sweaty feet that are prone to blisters. Gross.

We did our best to pick breathable shoes that will keep your feet dry and fresh as you pile up the miles, so long as you match them up with a capable pair of travel or hiking socks .

Have you ever had a pair of cheap shoes crap out on you midway through a trip? I haven’t, but I can imagine it’d be quite the pain in the butt to replace shoes in a foreign land. I don’t have such problems with my footwear since I always pick travel shoes that are durable and built for the long haul.

To ensure you buy a pair of durable shoes, read reviews, keep a close eye on the materials used to produce them, and only buy well-reviewed products from trusted brands.

Packability

As a minimalist traveler, packability is one of my top priorities. I wear my bulkiest shoes on the airplane while packing my lighter and more compact pair, as well as my sandals.

Saving space in your minimalist travel pack is a top consideration when hitting the road, so pick shoes that’ll pack down small if you intend on traveling light .

Weight and packability go hand in hand. And lighter shoes are better when you’re carrying a weekend backpack, duffle, or suitcase. Shoes tend to be among the heaviest travel items we carry.

Noel, the founder of this website, is an ultralight backpacker who nerds out over the weight of each piece of gear in his backpack. Maybe you should too.

Affordability is another key factor. I want all of the factors listed above, but not at an unfair cost. Remember that your shoes must endure cobblestones, dirt roads, train stations, and the occasional hike. That’s why you don’t see any cheap Amazon knockoffs on this list.

We did our best to recommend an array of well-reviewed shoes across a wide range of budgets.

Which Travel Shoes Will You Lace Up?

Man with blue jeans and black boots walking down a cobblestone road at sunset

This has been my take on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for all day walking. All of these shoes are stylish, comfortable, durable, lightweight and breathable. With any of these, your feet will thank you for making their next travel adventure as comfy as possible.

Don’t waste a single precious travel day looking for new shoes (or band-aids) because you chose the wrong footwear. This list consists of quality brands like Allbirds, Lems, Xero, Reebok, Blundstone, and others that you can rely on. Please share your experiences in the comments section.

I’ve traveled extensively in Europe wearing several of these shoes and hope my experiences will help you more comfortably navigate all those airports, train stations, and city streets that await you in the future. May all your travel adventures be low-impact, smooth sailing, and on-time!

Fraud is "rife" on second hand marketplaces including Depop, Shpock and Preloved, according to a new survey by Which?.

The consumer magazine/website found that, of 1,300 buyers, 32% had been scammed on a second hand marketplace in the two years to January.

The most common ruse involved consumers receiving incorrect goods or nothing at all, while others were delivered an empty package or fake goods.

57% of those surveyed said they had experienced a scam on Depop.

This compares with 53% for Shpock and 51% for Preloved and Nextdoor.

Amazon Marketplace came in at 35%, while for Gumtree and eBay the figures were both 29%.

The number for Facebook and Vinted was 24% and 22%, respectively.

Rocio Concha, Which? director of policy and advocacy, said the survey’s findings were "worrying".

"It's important that people properly check the seller's reviews and profile," she said, adding that marketplaces need to have proper checks in place and ensure that scam profiles are removed quickly.

Depop told the Guardian it offered protection for buyers and sellers and was investing in new technology.

"We strongly encourage consumers who are buying and selling anywhere online never to share personal information with other users, to be very wary about following links to other sites, and to report any suspicious behaviour via in-app reporting systems."

Sky News has reached out to the other companies mentioned.

You may remember our coverage here a few weeks back on the proliferation of scams targeting Taylor Swift fans hoping to buy tickets to see one of her current run of shows across Europe...

The Shake It Off star will hold a series of concerts in the UK as she continues her Eras tour, with the first taking place in Edinburgh on 7 June.

But the artist's megastardom has seen a huge demand for tickets, which were not cheap even before they sold out within minutes - with prices ranging from £58.65 - £194.75.

Resale prices from legitimate websites have been in the region of £700 each - with some fans reported to have spent well in excess of that to see their hero.

However, such is her popularity among an army of mostly young female devotees that the market has become a target for people seeking to exploit the widespread desperation for tickets.

As reported here, a spate of attempts had seen Facebook users' accounts hacked by scammers, who would then create seemingly genuine posts in groups on the site that the users were members of.

Initially, the posts would suggest the user was seeking to sell tickets - generally four - that were invariably just a few rows from the front of a specific venue for one of Swift's UK shows.

The price suggested in the posts was generally around £180, more expensive than the face value of most tickets, but a fraction of the cost of those being advertised on legitimate resale sites - especially for such desirable seating.

More recent instances indicate the methods being employed by scammers have since evolved and, it appears, become significantly more sophisticated.

In these more recent attempts to defraud so-called Swifties (and in many cases, the parents purchasing the tickets), the posts detail the specific rows and seat numbers.

A further departure from the previous efforts is the scammers no longer including the asking price for the (non-existent) tickets.

Both these changes were evident in one attempt Sky News has become aware of - as was another and decidedly sinister tactic.

In this case, given the number of previous scams that have flooded Facebook, the admin for the group in question first removed the post - correctly assuming it was fraudulent.

But, he told Sky News, he was subsequently sent a photo of what appeared to be the user's passport as a means of verifying her post was genuine.

This development indicates the scammer in question had used some form of photo-editing software to create an image that appeared to be of the user's passport.

"I contacted her to explain that I had deleted her post and removed her account from the group as there are so many scams around, and I could not verify their identity or the validity of the ticket offer," said Trevor Williams, who runs the local community Facebook group in Birmingham.

"Within a few minutes, I received a photo of a passport in this name and an assurance that she was genuine.

"This was enough to change my decision and the post was put it back on the group.

"Most people have no idea of the problems of being an admin on these groups, as you simply cannot win."

How can you protect yourself against these scams?

For those looking to buy resale tickets, the main advice is to simply avoid being tempted into seemingly genuine offers posted on Facebook, unless it is from someone you know and have spoken to directly (and not just over Facebook).

Those looking to sell on their tickets will invariably use the established and legitimate resale sites such as Viagogo or StubHub.

Perhaps the most useful piece of advice is an old one - if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

In terms of protecting yourself against your account on Facebook (or any social media site) being hacked by scammers, the best measure is to ensure you have enabled two-step or two-factor authentication.

This can be found through the security and privacy settings on your Facebook account, and involves the use of your telephone number or a separate authentication app on your phone whenever someone attempts to log in.

TV chef Gordon Ramsay has announced he will open new restaurants and a cooking academy in one of London's tallest skyscrapers.

The 60th floor of 22 Bishopsgate will have a 14-seat chef's table experience - run by the team from the chef's three-Michelin-starred Chelsea restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.

In addition, Lucky Cat restaurant, a Lucky Cat terrace bar and a Bread Street Kitchen will open on the 59th floor.

Finally, he'll be opening a cooking academy in the building, The Gordon Ramsay Academy.

Mr Ramsay said: "This is more than just a new opening - it's a significant milestone for our business.

"We're not only launching the highest culinary experiences in London, but also creating a vibrant culinary hub at the incredible 22 Bishopsgate."

City editor Mark Kleinman   has revealed that high street billionaire Mike Ashley is closing in on a deal to become the new British partner of struggling fashion chain Ted Baker.

He learnt that Frasers Group had emerged as the preferred partner for the chain following the collapse of No Ordinary Designer Label (NODL), Ted Baker's existing UK licensing partner.

It is hoped a deal could be agreed over the coming days - read more on this story here ...

Eating ultra-processed meat is linked to an increased risk of early death.

A Harvard study over 30 years tracked more than 114,000 adults.

The highest risks were linked with the most processed meats such as sausages and ham.

Regular eaters had a 13% higher chance of dying over the 34 years tracked.

Diets high in sugary and artificially sweetened drinks had a 9% increased risk, the study found.

The used car market increased by 6.5% in the first quarter of the year , with sales of over 1.9 million vehicles, new figures show.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says the total reveals the strongest start to a year since pre-pandemic 2019.

Sales of used hybrids also increased.

That's all from an enlightening news conference in which we heard an interest rate cut in June hadn't been ruled out - and that rates could fall more than markets expect.

Scroll through to read and watch some of the key moments - meantime, we'll return to general money and consumer news.

We're now hearing the final questions of this news conference.

The governor of the Bank of England is asked if August is more likely than June to see the Monetary Policy Committee cut interest rates.

"Nice try to introduce the 'is it June' question again," Andrew Bailey says with a smile.

"We're going meeting by meeting," he adds, stressing that more data [which will be at the MPC's disposal over the coming months] will allow them more visibility and more scope to make a decision."

Our  economics editor Ed Conway  is next to ask the governor a question.

He asks whether increasing government interest in the Bank's workings has any influence on an interest rate cut.

"We [the Monetary Policy Committee] never discuss politics," Andrew Bailey replies.

"We are an independent central bank, we have a remit and it is our duty to exercise that remit at all times."

"Our remit applies at all times, so it [politics] isn't a consideration."

Asked if inflation dynamics in the UK are different to the US, Andrew Bailey says there is no law that says the US moves first on interest rate cuts and everyone else afterwards.

"There is no law," he says.

"Moreover, we have a remit and target which is related to domestic inflation in the UK.

"We're an open economy so we take the rest of the world into consideration

"But there is no law to say we can only move once the Federal Reserve (central bank of the US) moves."

There is a feeling among economists that, although the US often leads, the European Central Bank may be the first to move with an early June cut.

This could, it has been suggested, push the UK to cut on 20 June.
