1. dine, drink and wander down the royal mile.

This stretch of road in the Old Town goes all the way from the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace to the famous Edinburgh Castle.

Both during the day and at night, the Royal Mile is busy with shoppers and cafe goers. 

At night, you will find its many bars and restaurants bustling with visitors and locals.

And, during Festival season, the Royal Mile plays host to large crowds gathering to watch street performers. The Royal Mile is only a few minutes walk away from Princes Street, the Grassmarket, and George Square and is well worth the visit.

You can ride a vintage double-decker bus whilst touring this haunted city.

As you tour some of Edinburgh’s most haunted spots, you will listen to tales of haunting, execution and murder through a hilarious comedy horror show.  

The tour bus is decorated with atmospheric lamps and window curtains.

It’s a real hoot. Highly recommended.

6. Sample Some Excellent Edinburgh Nightlife

One of the best things to do in Edinburgh is to head out for food and drinks. Edinburgh boasts hundreds of places that you’ll love to sit down (or stand up and dance!)

You can also catch live music at Stramash and Whistle Binkies if you fancy a dance.

For those who are looking for a quieter evening, why not try the Edinburgh Scotch Whisky Experience ?

This tasting tour will immerse you in the history of whisky with storytelling, which means you can learn about the importance of whisky to Scotland whilst sampling drams from around the country. 

There’s something for you party animals too!

Friday and Saturday night in Edinburgh is when things really start going.

The classy George Street area has a host of nightclubs where you can drink fancy cocktails and sip on champagne, or more mature dancers might want to seek out Brewhemia and Club Tropicana.

Visiting in winter? Here’s the best spots to see Christmas lights where George Street venues such as The Dome feature.

If you’re looking for something a bit more grungey, the Hive on Blair Street is the place for you – sticky walls, sticky floors, sticky people, cheap drinks and music to suit all tastes.

And for the LGBT+ community, Edinburgh’s small (but friendly and fun) ‘Pink Triangle’ around the Playhouse theatre is the place to be.

Start in Planet bar or the Street for drinks, then head to Habana or CC Bloom’s to dance the night away!

7. Learn About Whisky

Reserve the last time slot for The Johnnie Walker Whisky Experience then head up to the rooftop bar for stunning views over Princess Street and Edinburgh Castle.

The tour itself is an immersive one, taking you back to when the brand first started, through a workshop to learn about how whisky is made, and then to the bar to try the drinks science decides meets your preferences!

The ticket includes alcoholic drinks so this is an adult-only evening tour, and a great option for date night .

8. Organised Pub Crawl

Visit a variety of pubs during this group pub crawl , seven bars in total.

This tour is a great option for those travelling solo or in small groups who want to experience the nightlife of Edinburgh but don’t know where to start.

Note: drinks are not included. To get the “free” shots you need to buy a drink so they are more like a free chaser.

9. Climb To The Top of Arthur’s Seat and Watch The Sunrise

If you’re interested in free things to do in Edinburgh at night then this might be for you.

Climb up to the top of Arthur’s Seat just in time for sunrise or sunset and get spectacular and stunning panoramic views of Edinburgh, Fife, the Forth Bridges and the River Forth.  

This is a must-do for any Edinburgh student at least once in their university career!

You won’t forget the amazing views you see on a short hike up Arthur’s Seat.

10. Enjoy a Stroll Along the Beach

You read that right!

Edinburgh has a handful of beaches in the city and quite a few more close by in East Lothian and Fife.

Take a sunset stroll along the promenade at Costa del Porty, Portobello, or a cycle along to Cramond Beach to catch the falls.

9. Pizza in Porty

Feeling peckish after the walk in the fresh sea breeze?

Fill up on doughy goodness at the popular Portobello Civerinos Slice window and relax in the vintage beach chairs.

12. Edinburgh’s Excellent Eateries

Edinburgh is well known for hosting some excellent restaurants.

If you are looking for romantic things to do in Edinburgh, a quiet meal for two on George Street or the Royal Mile might be your choice.

And there are a host of independent and chain restaurants to choose from.

Taking a short bus journey to the Leith area will also offer you with a plethora of restaurant choices.

Many Leith restaurants draw upon the nautical heritage of the area and serve delectable seafood dishes.

13. Take a Picture of Edinburgh Castle At Night

Edinburgh by night is equally magical and spooky.

One sight that is worth a snap is Edinburgh Castle, which is lit each evening and can be seen from many parts of the city.  

Edinburgh at night offers you three main locations to get a great shot of the castle: Calton Hill, from Princes Street (at the foot of Castle Street) and from the Grassmarket.

14. Go On a Night Tour

As the light fades, you could explore the city’s darker side by embarking on one of Edinburgh’s night tours.

This walking tour will take you on a journey through the city centre to uncover the secrets of graveyards and alleyways.

This one starts at 9pm and is for adults only…

15. Have a BBQ in the Meadows

In the summer months, you might be lucky enough to experience some glorious Scottish sunshine!

On these (rare) days, students and locals flock to the Meadows to hang out, eat, play music and games.

A couple of tips, however: it will start to feel chilly, especially if you’ve been sat in the sun all day, so make sure to take a top with you.

As well, there are clearly marked areas for barbequing, so make sure to read the signs and BBQ responsibly. Don’t burn the grass!

16. Join a Ceilidh

Get the heart pumping a tradition Scottish dance.

A ceilidh pronounced kay-lay (see our guide to Scottish lingo for help), is a communal dance lead by a band.

Every Friday, the gorgeous Ghillie Dhu puts on a night of live music, drinks and flinging your partner round and round.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before.

Dances are guided.

You don’t have to wear a kilt by the way, just make sure you have on comfortable shoes!

Alternatively, if you want to listen to Scottish music without dancing, consider The Black Cat or Thistle Street Bar.

17. Post-Pub Munchies

If you’re wondering about things to do in Edinburgh tonight, and don’t have anything planned, don’t sweat!

Although tours tend to sell out fast, especially during the Festivals season, there may be some last-minute availability.  

Most pubs will have space for you to squeeze in, so go explore and try out a few places until you find your favourite.

And of course, there is always a takeaway open for an after drinks snack of fish and chips, cheesy chips or a deep-fried haggis!

18. See a Movie

Before you think this is a lame recommendation, a night time activity that can be done in any city, let me tell you that we have four pretty unique cinemas in town.

The Dominion is a throwback art deco film house in the area of Morningside.

The Cameo is a century old and can be found close to the city centre. It has a cool bar too.

The Filmhouse hosts documentary and offbeat films.

The Scotsman Picturehouse is pretty lavish.

19. Go to a Magical Cocktail Class

If you fancy donning a cloak and a wand and brewing up some adult potions, head on over to the Cauldron where you’ll be guided through a magical cocktail experience.

20. Score at Lane 7 or Roxy Lanes

St James Quarter has a new bowling alley, but it’s not for dusty shoes!

Lane 7 offers food, booze, bowling under neon lights, and graffiti artwork.

Roxy Lanes is a similar activity located on Rose Street.

21. Don’t Decide Dinner

At the top of St James Quarter and over the road by the Omni Centre, you’ll find two unique eating ares that feature a huge host of vendors, so no one in the group feels forced to eat food they don’t want!

Bonnie & Wild’s Scottish Marketplace and Edinburgh Street Food are both open late and have licensing laws for those looking to have a beer or wine with their meal.

22. Eat Pasta After Midnight

There are very few restaurants that serve food after midnight.

However, there is one saving grace for those who don’t want the night to end yet, Bar Napoli (75 Hanover Street) is notoriously open until 3am on a Friday and Saturday.

And guess what? Food reviews are positive!

23. Play Streetfighter While Sipping Cocktails

NQ64 is a dream for the big kids in town.

Play Pacman, Mariokart and Street Fighter while drinking pints at this arcade bar on Lothian Road.

24. Classic Games in a Pub

The Dog House on Leith Walk is a popular bar with eclectic decor and heaps of boards games to play for free.

There’s booths and tables with chairs beside the bar and through to the back of the pub.

25. Play Ball Games at Meadowbank

Play American or British pool, snooker, ping pong and darts at this modern games hall in North Edinburgh.

Dine on burgers and hit the bar between games at The Ball Room (25 Jocks Lodge, Edinburgh EH8 7A).

The Ball Room also displays live sport on big TVs.

26. Jump in a Ball Pit

Dive into a giant ball pit with over a million balls at Ballie Ballerson (14 Forrest Rd).

While you’re there you can drink cocktails and eat pizza while listening to the DJ play tunes.

Dress code is smart/casual.

27. Watch the Sunset at South Queensferry

Just before you reach the Forth Bridges there’s a cute town with colourful buildings, cake shops, chippies and stunning views of all three bridges.

Catch it at sunset with a bag of chips. Bliss.

If you’d prefer to dine there’s lots of choice in South Queensferry but it is best to book ahead.

Orocco Pier and Scotts are contemporary restaurants with views of the bridges.

The Hawes Inn and The Railbridge Bristro menus include Scottish fayre.

You can drive to South Queensferry and park for free along the waterfront close to The Railbridge Bistro and The Hawes Inn.

There is a train that goes from Edinburgh to Dalmeny which takes around 20 minutes then a 10 minute walk downhill to South Queensferry.

Finally, a bus from Edinburgh Bus Station that takes around 1 hour.

28. Night Skilling at Hillend

Just outside of Edinburgh but connected by public bus is Midlothian Snowsports Centre in Hillend.

Visitors can enjoy the UK’s biggest artificial slope in the evening as night falls over Edinburgh and the Pentlands Regional Park.

Don’t have any ski gear? No problem. Boots, skis and helmets can be hired on site.

Public buses run from Waverley and Haymarket Stations in the city centre.

How Safe is Edinburgh at Night?

Some visitors ask ‘is Edinburgh safe at night?’ Edinburgh is a very safe city, and you should take the usual precautions whilst visiting here.

Edinburgh has a huge student population, as well as tourists and locals who all live together in the city.  

Generally, walking through the streets or using public transport in the evening will be safe.

However, common sense should prevail, and it’s best to stick together as a group if you’re leaving pubs and clubs after a few whiskies!

Edinburgh does have an excellent black taxi service which you can book through phone or app to help you get back to your place.  

The one thing that Edinburgh students will tell you, however, is that you should not walk through the Meadows (located in Edinburgh’s Southside) alone at night.

Scotland’s capital city certainly isn’t short of activities during the day.

But what about at night?

Well, this ancient city is anything but sleepy when the sun goes down.

From bowling lanes and comedy clubs to rooftop bars and historic cinemas, here are the 27 best things to do in Edinburgh at night!

1. Visit Edinburgh Castle

Address: Castlehill, Edinburgh EH1 2NG

The last entry inside the gates of Edinburgh Castle may be 4 pm.

But this historic landmark somehow looks even more impressive at night with its golden lights shining over the rest of the city.

Take a stroll up the Royal Mile towards the castle and you’ll see how it truly lights up the sky.

By the time you reach the outer grounds, you’ll be able to look out over the shining city below, including the Royal Mile, Princes Street and Princes Street Gardens.

Or, to marvel at the grandeur of the castle from afar, why not pull up a pew in the Grassmarket or Princes Street Gardens?

You’ll find plenty of bars with outdoor seating areas that will keep the refreshments flowing late into the evening.

And I think an ancient castle and a nice glass of wine make a nice pairing, don’t you?

2. Go on a Grassmarket pub crawl

On that note… one drink with a view of the castle might turn into several if you fancy conducting your own Grassmarket pub crawl .

By day, the Grassmarket (very aptly named, as it was once Edinburgh’s main marketplace) is a buzzing little destination with independent shops and cafes.

By night, it comes to life with pubs, restaurants and live music events bringing in people from all over the city.

Locals, students and tourists all unite for a cracking evening under the castle!

Try Cold Town House , home of craft beer and famous for its rooftop terrace.

Or how about Biddy Mulligans , an Irish bar that will have you drinking and dancing right through to the wee hours of the morning?

3. Join a ghost tour

Did you know that Edinburgh has a reputation for being one of the most haunted cities in the world?

From spooky tales of witchcraft and the supernatural to gruesome stories of historic murder, this city has a chilling past just waiting to be uncovered.

Of course, there are plenty of organised indoor tours that will tell you infamous tales of ghosts and ghouls that roam the city.

But there’s nothing quite like exploring the dark underbelly of Edinburgh on foot (if you’re able to).

Roam through Edinburgh’s cobbled streets, dark alleyways and underground vaults with a knowledgeable guide.

Throughout the year, Edinburgh Zoo hosts various After Hours events.

At these events, you get the chance to spend an evening strolling between penguins, pandas, tigers and flamingos and see what they get up to after gates normally close.

(Be warned, though – some of them just sleep!)

As well as the animal exhibits, the zoo also hosts several on-site caterers serving delicious local food and drink, and there are outdoor live music sets on the main lawn of the park.

If you’re looking for a unique, and completely wholesome, night out in Edinburgh, you might have just found it.

This is one of the more unique things to do in Edinburgh at night, that’s for sure.

5. Watch a show at The Stand Comedy Club

You might already know that each year Edinburgh is home to the Fringe Festival.

It’s the world’s greatest arts festival, famous for comedy, theatre and other live exhibitions from all over the world.

But Edinburgh has some fantastic home-grown comedy, and The Stand Comedy Club is proof of that.

The venue features local comedians and up-and-coming performers just dying to put a smile on your face.

And to be honest, whether you’re laughing at the jokes or laughing at how awkwardly bad the jokes are, you’re guaranteed to leave with sore cheeks.

Chuck in some food and drinks to the experience and there you have it: a night of top-class entertainment.

Oh, and if you don’t want to get picked on by the comedians, I’d recommend a seat near the back.

6. Go bowling at Lane7

No matter what city you’re visiting, you really can’t go wrong with spending a few hours at a bowling alley.

And conveniently, Lane7 is easily one of the best things to do in Edinburgh at night.

Picture a bowling alley, cocktail bar, ping-pong hall and games room all rolled into one, with funky graffiti walls and colourful furnishings to top it all off.

Just one look at their Instagram is enough to entice you into this retro world of fun and games.

So grab a drink, move from one activity to the next and let your competitive side take over!

7. Play board games at The Mousetrap

However, if that didn’t quite satisfy your love for games night, then get yourself down to The Mousetrap .

This self-professed ‘dive bar’ is heaps of fun – and one of my favourite things to do in Edinburgh at night.

Not only does the bar have some of the best-priced cocktails in the city as well as a wide variety of beers and spirits.

But the unique draw of The Mousetrap is the plethora of board games scattered around the bar area just waiting to be played, as well as retro arcade machines and some aggressively quirky décor.

The Mousetrap also prides itself on being LGBTQ+ friendly, and it undoubtedly has some of the best vibes in the area because of it.

Everyone is welcome (as long as you like board games, that is).

8. Dance at a Scottish ceilidh

Have you heard of The Gay Gordons?

The Dashing White Sargeant?

Strip The Willow?

Well, they might sound like complete and utter gibberish for now, but they’re famous ceilidh dances!

Ones that every single Scot is guarantee d to know.

Traditionally, a ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee, FYI) is usually saved for special occasions such as weddings, parties, formal dinners and Burns Suppers.

However, the Burly Ceilidh Club at Ghillie Dhu hosts a weekly informal ceilidh where everyone is welcome – no matter how bad you are at dancing!

You’ll be greeted with a welcome drink, followed by a three-course meal, ceilidh dance and a DJ to finish.

The caller will talk you through each of the moves before the ceilidh dance starts.

But honestly, they’re super easy to pick up.

Just make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes, clothes, and don’t mind leaving with a couple of enthusiastic bruises on your arms!

9. Go ‘out out’ at Fingers Piano Bar

Now, if you’re looking for somewhere to go ‘out out’ in Edinburgh – and maybe even looking for somewhere that’s a wee bit different from your usual club – then look no further than Fingers Piano Bar .

With a live pianist, light-up dance floor and sickly sweet cocktails, this place has truly immaculate vibes that are ridiculous and yet somehow not at all tacky?

Fingers is the kind of night out that’s so bad that it’s good.

One minute you’ll be listening to Clair De Lune by Debussy, then Dignity by Deacon Blue, then the piano version of Mr Brightside.

Honestly – bizarre.

10. Watch the sunset from Arthur’s Seat

Address: Edinburgh EH16 5HX

Hiking Arthur’s Seat has got to be on everyone’s to-do list while visiting Edinburgh.

But you’re not restricted to climbing this extinct volcano in the morning and afternoon as it’s also a beautiful spot to watch the sunset!

Arthur’s Seat is the highest of the seven hills in Edinburgh and looks like quite a daunting climb from the bottom.

However, in reality, it only takes your average Joe around 20-30 minutes to climb to the peak.

From there you get magical, panoramic views of the city of Edinburgh; the Old and New Towns, Hollyrood Palace and Park, the Salisbury Crags and beyond.

Just beware, it can get pretty blustery and cold at the top (it is Scotland, after all) so make sure you wrap up warm!

Take a flask of tea, hot chocolate or a hot toddy to enjoy at the top and watch the gorgeous city change colours on the way to nightfall.

This is easily one of the best things to do in Edinburgh at night.

11. Catch a movie at Dominion Cinema

I know it might seem like a bit of a waste to visit a new city and spend your evening in the cinema.

However, Edinburgh has some really beautiful picture houses including Dominion Cinema , an independent cinema located in Morningside.

Not only is the building a masterpiece in itself – originally built in the 1930s with grand Art Deco characteristics – but the whole experience of visiting this film house will leave you with a newfound admiration of the cinema.

You’ll learn how scotch whisky is made, what flavours are used and how to enjoy a dram properly.

And to top it off, this venue has beautiful views over Edinburgh and Princes Street.

14. Go late-night shopping on Princes Street

This one sort of depends on what day of the week you’re visiting Edinburgh,

But if you happen to be in the city on a Thursday night (famously known as the only ‘late night’ shopping night in Scotland) then you’re in for a treat on Princes Street.

On Thursdays, most stores are open a good few hours past their usual closing time – usually until around 8-9 pm.

Perfect if you’ve had a busy day of Scottish sightseeing but still wanted a nosy in the shops afterwards!

On Princes Street, you’ll find a whole host of high-street stores as well as tourist shops.

Or you can head round to the newly opened St James Quarter for four stories filled with over 40 retailers, including brands like Stradivarius and Bershka that have landed in Scotland for the first time.

Late-night shopping in Edinburgh is much more relaxed than the hustle and bustle of Princes Street during the day, so it’s a perfect time to browse without as many crowds.

And to top it off, the shore of Leith is a gorgeous little spot for the evening.

Post-dinner, take a stroll by the port and you’ll see the lights glisten on the water.

For six weeks every year, East Princes Street Gardens transforms itself into a winter wonderland that’s not a stones’ throw away from an authentic German market.

You can wander between wooden stalls selling personalised gifts and fresh food.

And it’s even better in the evening when the sky is dark but the twinkling Christmas lights shine on through!

The market becomes a bit more of a party in the evening, with plenty of tourists milling in and out of spots like the Johnnie Walker Bothy Bar and Christmas Festival Village, enjoying mulled wine and festive music!

Wrap up warm and grab a glass of gluhwein – you’ll fit right in!

Edinburgh is a hub for music, theatre, comedy and more, making it the perfect place to explore after dark. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there are plenty of things to keep you entertained in Edinburgh at night.

Below, I’m sharing some of my favourite things to do in Edinburgh at night, from catching a show at the theatre to exploring the city’s pub scene. Whether you’re a night owl or just looking for something to do after dinner, Edinburgh is sure to deliver an unforgettable experience.

How to get to Edinburgh

While many domestic visitors to Edinburgh will likely drive to the capital city of Scotland, there are other ways to travel there too including the following:

Flights to Edinburgh

Edinburgh has an international airport, which sits about 8 miles west of the city centre. 

The airport is served by a range of airlines, including budget carriers like Ryanair and EasyJet and you can fly to Edinburgh from many UK cities and major European destinations.

There are also direct flights from North America, the Middle East, and Asia.

Skyscanner is what I use to find cheap flights.

To get to Edinburgh city centre from the airport you can ride the train which is a comfortable and reliable way to travel.

Trains to Edinburgh

Edinburgh is well-connected to other UK cities by train, and the main train station in Edinburgh is Waverley Station, located in the city centre. 

There are regular trains to Edinburgh from major cities like London, Manchester, and Glasgow as well as more regional and local train routes.

The journey time from London to Edinburgh is around 4-5 hours on a high-speed train.

Alternatively, you can take the Caledonian Sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. This train leaves in the evening and arrives in Edinburgh early in the morning.

Buses to Edinburgh

Edinburgh is also well-served by bus services, and the main bus station in Edinburgh is located in St Andrew Square in the city centre.

You can take a bus to Edinburgh from other UK cities, including London, Manchester, and Glasgow .

You can stroll around the city whenever suits you, whether it’s day or night. Edinburgh looks especially lovely under the lights, with the Castle providing a stunning backdrop for some gorgeous photos. 

Make sure to check out the Vennel viewpoint which is one of my favourite views of the castle and Edinburgh’s architecture.

While the starting point at Edinburgh Castle is only accessible during the day until 6 pm depending on the time of year, there are plenty of other places that the audio guide will lead you to that can be visited at night.

2. Enjoy a night at the theatre

Head to Edinburgh Playhouse to catch a play. As the largest theatre in Scotland, Edinburgh Playhouse started life as a cinema in the 1920s. 

With a capacity of 3,000 over 3 levels, the Playhouse offers a great theatre experience. 

The original design and décor only add to the charm, whether you’re watching a musical like Les Miserables, a comedy show, live music, or a dance production.

3. Sample some Scotch whisky

No trip to Scotland is complete without sampling the nation’s most famous export – whisky! 

Joining a whisky tour is a great way to learn more about how this beloved drink is distilled. If you’re not sure about whisky, I’ve found whisky tours really give me more of an appreciation for it, and while I wouldn’t say I’m a whisky lover (yet) I always have fun going to a distillery for a tour!

There’s also the Scotch Whisky Experience which is a great thing to do during the day, but the last tour is quite early in the evening so it’s not the best Edinburgh night experience. 

4. Take a ghost tour in the Edinburgh Vaults

For an adventure that’s packed with history, intrigue, and a good dose of spookiness, a ghost tour of the Edinburgh Vaults is a must-do. 

The underground caverns were built in the 18th century and were once used for storage and slums. 

Nowadays, they’re the perfect setting for a ghost tour, where you can explore the underground vaults and hear about the dark events that have taken place below the city. 

It’s definitely one of the more unique things to do in Edinburgh if you’re looking for a thrilling experience.

5. Go to a game

Sports fans will be pleased to know that Edinburgh has plenty of options to choose from. Edinburgh has two Premiership sides – Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian and the Scottish national rugby union side plays at Murrayfield. There’s also an ice hockey team (Edinburgh Capitals) and an American football team (the Wolves) to check out. 

Sport is an important part of the city’s culture, so be sure to check the sporting calendar for events taking place during your visit. 

Regular evening matches are held in all team sports so just pick one that takes your fancy and have a fun night! Being in a fun atmosphere at a sports game can be such a fun idea for fun things to do in Edinburgh at night.

6. Watch a film

For a night of entertainment, head to the Dominion cinema in Morningside , Edinburgh’s lovely independent cinema. 

Built in the 1930s with Art Deco style in mind, the building itself is worth visiting even if you don’t end up watching a film.

Watching a film at the Dominion, you’ll be comfortable with reclining sofas and snack and drinks service straight to your table. 

7. Dance at a ceilidh

Princes Street is central to Edinburgh life, and you can enjoy a traditional Scottish experience there – dancing at a ceilidh.

The Ghillie-Dhu is a large space that used to be a church, and nowadasy every weekend, you can enjoy live music to dance to as part of a ceilidh. 

There’s also a whisky bar where you can enjoy a drink or two before summoning the courage to join in on the dance floor.

I’m not usually much of a dancer, but ceilidhs are so much fun and one of the best things to do in Edinburgh at night!

8. Surprise yourself at Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura is one of Edinburgh’s best indoor activities, and it’s perfect for days when you want an indoor alternative. 

With five floors, there’s plenty to explore, and on weekends, it stays open until 9:30 pm. 

You’ll encounter tricks of the light and numerous photo opportunities as you make your way through this illusion-filled attraction. 

Before you leave, be sure to visit the Rooftop Terrace, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Edinburgh. Camera Obscura is right by the castle so you can get some super cool views of the castle and the rest of the city at night.

9. Real Mary King’s Close

For a deep dive into Edinburgh’s hidden history, take a tour of Real Mary King’s Close.  

Located under the Royal Mile, these secret alleyways reveal how Edinburgh residents used to live underground four centuries ago. 

The costumed character guides bring history to life with tales of myths, legends, hauntings, and murders that took place in the tenement houses centuries ago. 

The final tour starts at 9 pm so make sure to book your spot well in advance if this is one of the things you want to do in Edinburgh at night. 

10. Go to after-hours at the zoo

If you’re an animal lover, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Edinburgh’s wonderful zoo after hours. 

The zoo usually closes at 4 pm in the winter and not much later in the summer, but there are several After Hours events that you can check out. 

The zoo is home to all sorts of animals including, my favourite, penguins. 

Some of the after-hours events at Edinburgh zoo include live music and drinks and it’s a fun way to experience the zoo when it’s a bit quieter. 

11. Have a night out in Edinburgh

A great way to get to know Edinburgh’s nightlife is to go on a pub crawl and, if you only have one night in Edinburgh I highly recommend checking out a few of the city’s pubs.

With a guide, you can discover places to go for a drink based on experience rather than a guidebook. 

Your journey through the old part of the city includes seven places and several free shots. At the end of the night, you can decide which places you want to revisit during your stay in Edinburgh.

If you know the city a little bit already or don’t like the idea of a tour, you can make up your own pub crawl by just going from pub to pub. Grassmarket is a great place for this.

Edinburgh’s club scene is lively until the early hours, and there’s something for everyone’s musical tastes. 

Stramash is one place worth trying, with a large bar in Cowgate that stays open until 3 am, live music, and the best of live sports. 

Food is available until around midnight, and there’s plenty of local and famous music to enjoy. 

The musical styles do change by the night, so be sure to check out which night is more your style.

13. Edinburgh Dungeon Late Show

The Edinburgh Dungeon is a top attraction in the city, and their Late Show is a unique way to experience it after hours. 

You’ll embark on a 1-hour journey through the dungeons, exploring one of the most terrifying, yet interesting, places in Edinburgh. 

The tour takes you through dark and narrow corridors with amazing sound effects and ends with a scary fun Drop Ride. As you go through the dungeons there are actors you’ll interact with you which makes the tour both scary and fun.  

The tours start from 8 pm till late and the late shows are only for those aged over 18.

14. Attend the seasonal markets in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is known for its fantastic seasonal markets that take place throughout the year. 

During the winter months, the city is transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with Christmas lights, decorations, and a bustling Christmas market in Princes Street Gardens.

Then, during the summer months, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe takes over the city, bringing with it a range of exciting After Hours events including comedy shows and theatre productions.

In August, the International Book Festival also takes place, providing book lovers with a range of evening talks and events to enjoy.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts and media festival, held across numerous venues in the city each August. There are events all throughout the day and night so there’s always something to do no matter the time of day.

Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano in Edinburgh, offers one of the best vantage points in the city. 

With panoramic views across the city, Holyrood Palace, and beyond, it’s a must-visit attraction for anyone visiting Edinburgh.

The climb to the summit is not as difficult as it may seem and can take an averagely-fit person under 1 hour. 

You can visit Arthur’s Seat at any time of day, with sunrise and sunset being the most popular times.

The Last Drop

The Bow Bar

As its name suggests, Edinburgh Food Studio, located on a nondescript road a short cab ride from central Edinburgh, is the city’s apex for gastronomes. Inside, two long tables are set out with the kitchen at the back and a bar in front of that. There are fine wines, craft beers, and single-cask whiskeys, as well as a few quirks to keep things interesting, including, on a recent visit, ice wine. Although it’s a bona fide brick-and-mortar restaurant, Edinburgh Food Studio has the hum, chatter, and excitement of a pop-up. The dishes, part of a seven-course set menu, aren’t wacky or pretentious; rather, they’re borne from hard-earned research and experimentation.

The Ship on the Shore

Set right on the waterfront in Leith, The Ship, with its black painted wooden tables outside, looks like a handsome pub. Step inside, though, and it’s clear that this is more like a serious wine bar and restaurant. Gaggles of tourists, especially in summer. But there are plenty of locals, who love The Ship’s leisurely breakfasts and lunches. With a dedicated crustacea and mollusks menu, The Ship makes its focus clear: seafood. At breakfast, go for the Bunnahabhain smoked salmon or the Arbroath smokie (smoked haddock) with buttery toast. Well known acts from Scotland and beyond are also regular performers. This venue has one of the most impressive sound systems in the country. Doors generally open about 7 pm for live music gigs. You’ll also find regular club nights with various themes from indie to dance music.

If you like to get dressed up for a big night out and you’re looking for a trendy venue then Lulu on George Street might just tempt you. The club is underneath the popular Tigerlily and it features a classic Saturday Night Fever-style lighted dance floor. There are plenty of sofas and seating areas for a rest between dances and there’s also a VIP area and private rooms for hire. You will find the music is generally chart, house and R & B. It tends to get more expensive the later you go. Some people may find it a bit pretentious and it tends to attract a professional crowd.

El Barrio is a lively Latin themed bar, grill and dance club located in the heart of the city center, on Rose Street. The Shanghai Club nestles in the basement of an upscale boutique hotel, Le Monde. It has recently been refurbished and boasts a state of the art sound system as well as a variety of areas to fit your mood. The dancefloor is ringed by more intimate booths suitable for smaller parties. There is also a VIP area overlooking the dance floor, the more secluded and chilled Jaiding Lounge and a private bar which also offers karaoke packages. The music is generally R & B, Hip Hop, and Garage, but specific club nights offer a wider range of tunes.

La Belle Angele

La Belle Angele has been a fixture on the Edinburgh clubbing scene for many years. It burned to the ground in the disastrous Cowgate fire of 2002 and only reopened twelve years later in 2014. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, hosting club nights and live artists. The music is an eclectic mix of soul, rock, house, disco and almost everything else in between. The venue is small and friendly with an intimate dance floor and a great sound system.

The festival was inspired over 70 years ago, by a show called ‘Something about a Soldier’ performed in 1949 at the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street gardens.

The first-ever Military Tattoo was organized by Lieutenant Colonel George Malcom who aimed to bring to life the Army’s contribution to the Edinburgh International Festival.

What is the easiest way to get to Edinburgh?

If you're travelling to Edinburgh from a nearby city, such as Liverpool, Glasgow or Newcastle, the easiest way to get to the Scottish capital is by train.

Edinburgh has two mainline train stations: Edinburgh Waverley, which is in the city centre, and Haymarket Station, which is in the West End. For these ghost tours, we recommend travelling to Edinburgh Waverley.

The TransPennine Express connects northern locations like Manchester, Preston, Leeds, York and Newcastle to Edinburgh, with the LNER also providing services from Newcastle, York, Leeds and Aberdeen. If you're travelling from somewhere else in Scotland, Scotrail is your best bet as it operates a full schedule of trains throughout Scotland. For more southern cities, such as Birmingham and Coventry, Virgin Rail will get you to Edinburgh.

If possible, it's best to book an 'off-peak' ticket to save a few pennies. 'Off-peak' is any time outside of the busiest travelling times, so commuting hours and weekends. Plus, a Railcard is a guaranteed way to save a third on the price of a train fare. What is the best way to get from London to Edinburgh?

One of the RadioTimes.com team travelled from London Victoria to Edinburgh Bus Station when they visited the Fringe Festival last summer. It took 12 hours and was pretty uncomfortable. However, it was incredibly cheap, so it's worth bearing in mind that if you're on a tight budget, Megabus and National Express offer coach rides to Edinburgh.

There is, of course, an LNER train service from London to Edinburgh which takes approximately five hours. But if you'd prefer to do something a little more special, why not opt for a trip on the Caledonian Sleeper? The Caledonian Sleeper is an overnight service which operates between Euston and Edinburgh, so you can go to sleep in London and wake up in Edinburgh!

If you're travelling from London (or from somewhere equally as far afield) to Edinburgh, then you'll probably want to make a few days of it.

Edinburgh Castle

The most famous attraction in Edinburgh is Edinburgh Castle . Located on top of the Royal Mile, you can visit the historic fortress day or night. The castle has seen a lot through the centuries.

What was once home to kings and queens of Scotland, a royal treasury, military garrison, prison of war, and fortress, today is a part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site and Edinburgh's most visited attraction. Admire the breathtaking view of the city from the castle at sunrise or sunset. During the summer season, the last visit is at 5.30 pm and winter time the castle closes at 4. 45 pm.

There is so much to see and do in the castle. You will get to see the Great Hall, St Margaret’s Chapel, Mons Meg, One o’Clock Gun, Scottish National War Museum, and much more! Booking is required beforehand, and a single admission ticket is up to $20.

John Knox House

Dating back to the 15th century, this historic house is one of the oldest in Edinburgh and an important part of Scotland's history. This place used to be the home of John Knox, the leader of the Scottish Reformation and founder of the Scottish Presbyterian Church. But it was also the home of the Queen's goldsmith. Located within short walking distance from Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town, this historical building is a definite must-see on your stay in the city.

Although it is open until 6 pm, you can always stop by at night and admire the lit house from the outside. If you happen to be in the Old Town during the day, go inside and explore medieval exhibitions and the interior, and get an insight into how the Reformation looked like in Scotland. The house is part of the Scottish Storytelling Centre, where you attend live performances and various exhibitions.

For less than $5 this museum house is a must for all history buffs out there.

Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is the best family-friendly attraction to visit on your stay in Edinburgh. Kids and kids at heart alike will enjoy spending a few hours in this house of illusion, filled with hundreds of interactive exhibits such as optical illusions, magic tricks, mirror maze, vortex, infinity wall, and a lot more spread across five floors. Located within a short distance of the famous Edinburgh Castle, this place attracts visitors from all around the world, and offers a wee bit of fun for everyone!

When you are done testing your brains with mind-bending illusions, head to the Rooftop Terrace for some breathtaking views of Edinburgh. Make use of the free binoculars and telescopes and get a closer look at what is happening in Princes Street Gardens or at Edinburgh's Royal Observatory. Although a must-see, the Camera Obscura show works only with daylight, and visibility is weather-dependent.

The place is open until 7 pm during the week, and Friday - Sunday until 9 pm. The visit is free for children under 5, and for the rest booking in advance is required. Tickets are less than $25 per adult and have in mind that the access to each floor is all via stairs.

National Museum of Scotland

While most museums in Edinburgh close in the early evening, the National Museum of Scotland allows after-hours visits. Enjoy pop-up shows with food and drinks as you explore the exhibits. It does get more fun than during the day and it is a completely different experience.

Located just a 2-minute walk from Greyfriars Kirkyard, the museum covers anything from art, design, fashion, science and technology, Scottish history, and more! You will come across so many permanent and temporary exhibitions from ancient to modern times that you will need an entire day to cover it all. Make sure you see the Kingdom of Scots and The Millennium Clock exhibits and head to the roof for spectacular views of Edinburgh, day or night.

There is no need to pre-book a ticket, and entry is free. All you need to do is show up.

Calton Hill

If you want to experience historic Scotland, walk where soldiers and royals walked and see some breathtaking views of the city, no place offers better panoramic views than Calton Hill . Climbing up the hill located in the city center, you will come across large lawns, some intriguing monuments dating back to the Enlightenment like the Nelson Monument and Dugald Stewart Monument, and oddly enough, a Parthenon-style temple at the top which is the central building of the City Observatory.

The views from this UNESCO World Heritage Site are indeed breathtaking and it is the perfect spot to watch the sunset. Attractions you can see from the top of the hill include Arthur’s Seat, Holyrood Palace, Holyrood Park, the Scottish Parliament, National Museum, and beyond!

Note: This hike requires good walking shoes. Pack a picnic, as you'll definitely work up an appetite climbing up the hill.

Princes Street

Located in New Town, Princes Street is one of Edinburgh's most important thoroughfares and the most famous shopping street in the city filled with independent shops and the biggest department stores in Edinburgh, making it ideal for late-night shopping. Take a walk along Princes Street starting from Lothian Road in the west, all the way to Leith Street in the east. 

Strolling along the three-quarters of a mile long street you will come across the famous Gothic Scott Monument, dedicated to  Sir Walter Scott , a Scottish novelist and historian, author of Waverley Novels, after which Waverley train station was named.

For those who like a late evening meal, head down to New Town and have a sit in one of the many top-notch restaurants in the area. A definite must-try of the menu is a Scottish Fayre such as haggis, neeps and tatties, Scottish salmon, bangers and mash, and of course, sticky toffee pudding.

For those who appreciate a good laugh, the best comedy clubs in town are Stand Comedy Club and Monkey Barrel, which is just within a short walk from the Royal Mile. If you want to bring your children along, you can visit the dungeons during regular hours, until 4 pm. Children under 5 will not be admitted. Expect to see actors interacting with "the peasants" in a way they did in the dungeons, so if you don't like to be called names, this is not the place for you.

You may get a good scare from the amazing sound effects as you walk through the dark and scary narrow corridors, from one room to another. If you want to end the tour in a scary fun way, you should hop on the Drop Ride.

Note: The spooky night experience after 8 pm is for 18+ only and happens only on certain nights so make sure to check their website for dates.

Whisky tasting is one of the best things to do in Edinburgh at night. The guides are incredible at making the tour as scary as possible while treating you to tales of gruesome drama and real historical facts that leave you wanting more. I highly recommend tour guides Anya, Fraser or Megan. They are all hilarious and knowledgeable and make the tour feel really spooky.

Just be aware that this tour isn’t for the faint of heart. Someone on my tour fell ill and fainted in the museum before even going down to the vaults!

The Edinburgh Vaults Tour begins above ground in Edinburgh’s Old Town before heading down to Damnation Alley, where you will be told grim stories about the people who once lingered in the dark vaults that were recently uncovered.

The tour guides are a lot of fun, entertaining and spooky. However, I would consider this ghost tour fun and dramatic as it has a jump scare at the end, so if this isn’t your thing, I recommend picking a different tour.

Also, please note that this tour generally runs long, so don’t book it if you have a tight schedule.

I spent the night in Damnation Alley when they first unleashed it to the public. It just had two empty vaulted rooms at that time, and they were working on tearing down more walls to find more vaults. Of course, this was long before the discovery of the South Bridge Entity, but it was still pretty spooky.

The guides are funny, informative and a little bit scary! I loved the tour guide who played Scotland’s infamous Sawny Bean – he was a blast!
