Wine Tasting in Pennsylvania: 2024 Wine Region Guide

Wine tasting in Pennsylvania

Here’s How to Go Wine Tasting in Pennsylvania During 2024

If you think the story of American wine is told only through the vineyards of California, Washington, Oregon, or the cellars of upstate New York, it’s time to pour a glass and turn your attention to Pennsylvania. This state isn’t just about the Liberty Bell and Philly cheesesteaks; it’s also home to a wine history that stretches back to the 1600s.

William Penn didn’t just found a state; he planted the seeds—quite literally—for a wine culture that has matured into an industry with over 300 licensed wineries today. In 1682, Penn sailed from England with Bordeaux grapevines in tow, planting them a year later on what is now Lemon Hill in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. Although this early vineyard was not successful as the European vinifera grapes couldn’t adapt to local pests and diseases—it had a lasting impact. These vines cross-pollinated with native species, giving rise to America’s first hybrid grapes, known informally as “wildings.”

From native American grapes to sophisticated hybrids, and of course, Vitis vinifera, Pennsylvania’s vineyards offer an unexpectedly epic range of flavors and wine tasting experiences waiting to be discovered. Perhaps what’s most exciting is that despite its history, the region still has plenty more experimenting and growing to do.

Lake Erie Wine Country

The Lake Erie AVA is not just a wine region; it’s a destination. Stretching 53 miles along the southern shore of Lake Erie, this area offers a unique maritime climate that’s particularly conducive to grape growing. The region has a viticultural history that dates back to the 19th century and has long been a stronghold for white wines. But as we like to often highlight on Winetraveler, it’s not just about the wine; it’s about the experience.

Dotted throughout the shoreline, wineries around Lake Erie offer gorgeous vineyard views where you can relax and enjoy authentic, handcrafted wines, brews, and even spirits. The moderating effect of Lake Erie makes for a longer growing season, allowing grapes to develop complex flavors and aromas.

Notable Wineries

Mazza Vineyards and Penn Shore Winery are just two of the many wineries that contribute to the region’s reputation for quality and diversity. Mazza is the largest producer in the state and is renowned for its Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio, but they also make traditional method sparkling wines and have recently won awards for their Cabernet Franc and Vidal Blanc -based Ice Wine .

Penn Shore has garnered attention for its Seyval Blanc, a hybrid grape variety that thrives in the Lake Erie climate.

How and When to Visit

The Lake Erie region is most vibrant from May to October, as the vineyards progressively become more lush during the summer and the tasting rooms are bustling. In the fall, the northeastern fall foliage really begins to stand out and the views become even more majestic.

The area has seen significant growth over the past few decades, both in the number of wineries and the quality of wines produced. It’s a region that respects its history but is not afraid to innovate, making it a must-visit for any Winetraveler.

Two wineries that encapsulate the spirit of Lehigh Valley are Clover Hill Vineyards & Winer y and Galen Glen Winery . Clover Hill is particularly known for their sparkling wines, which showcase the winery’s meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking.

Galen Glen, on the other hand, has received numerous awards for their Riesling, as well as their Grüner Veltliner, which has found a special and complex aromatic and flavor profile thanks to Galen Glen’s growing methods and winemaking techniques.

The best time to explore the wineries and vineyards is from May through September, when the weather is most favorable for outdoor tastings and vineyard tours. However, we really do love PA during the fall season. While grapes may no longer be lingering on the vines, road tripping throughout the region and tasting along the way is difficult to go wrong with.

Pennsylvania’s Wine Grape Varieties

Pennsylvania is still evolving, and there’s no shortage of flavor, aromas, and wine experiences, thanks in large part to its diverse range of grape varieties. From European classics to hardy hybrids and native gems, the Keystone State offers a grape for every palate. Here are the main grape varieties to be aware of before visiting this dynamic wine destination.

Albariño is a white grape variety that is aromatic and floral, often unaged and minimally influenced by oak. This allows its natural flavors of orange blossom, honeysuckle, lemongrass, and green apple to shine. Its high acidity makes it a refreshing choice for lighter, herb-infused dishes.

This French-American hybrid grape is versatile, producing wines that can range from delicate, akin to Pinot Noir, to robust and bold, resembling Bordeaux. Baco Noir wines are characterized by their acidity and low tannins, making them a good match for barbecued meats, tomato-based sauces, and lamb.

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is a red grape variety that thrives in multiple Pennsylvania regions. Aged in oak, it develops an earthy, peppery profile with aromatic complexity. Its balanced tannins and medium-high acidity make it a versatile pairing option for a wide range of foods, from soft cheeses to game meats.

Cabernet Sauvignon

In Pennsylvania, Cabernet Sauvignon leans more toward the herbal, floral profiles of European varieties than the fruit-forward styles of the West Coast. Expect notes of graphite and tobacco with hints of licorice or black cherry. Its high tannins and complex flavors complement fatty foods like steak and lamb chops well.

Catawba is a native grape primarily grown in the Northwest region of Pennsylvania. The wine it produces is medium-bodied with a sweeter profile, resembling White Zinfandel. It pairs well with barbecue, fried chicken, and earthy cheeses.

Cayuga is a versatile, cold-hardy grape that can be used to produce a range of wine styles, from dry to sweet to sparkling. Found throughout Pennsylvania, Cayuga wines can be paired with a variety of foods, from lobster rolls to apple pie.

Chambourcin

Chambourcin is a red grape that’s similar to Pinot Noir and is found across Pennsylvania. Often aged in oak to balance its natural acidity, the wine has earthy, tobacco, and vanilla notes. It pairs well with a variety of foods, from steak to pasta with red sauce.

Despite its deep, inky color, Chancellor produces wines that can be surprisingly light. Expect flavors of soft red cherries, blackberries, and a hint of cinnamon. It pairs well with lamb and venison.

Pennsylvania’s Chardonnays often resemble their European counterparts due to similar climate and soil conditions. They can range from dry, unoaked styles with fruity and floral notes to oaked varieties with hints of vanilla and caramel. This versatile white grape is primarily grown in the SouthCentral and SouthEast regions of the state.

Primarily grown in the Northwest region, Concord grapes are often used for juice or jelly. When made into wine, they produce a sweet, dark red with a strong grape flavor, pairing well with bold flavors like sharp cheddar and spicy seafood.

Similar to Concord but with a lighter skin and flavor, Delaware grapes are primarily found in the Northwest region. They produce pleasantly sweet white wines or rosés that pair well with salty dishes like prosciutto-wrapped melon.

Gewürztraminer

This aromatic white grape variety offers strong aromas of wildflowers, roses, and tropical fruits. While not extensively grown in the U.S., some vineyards in Pennsylvania do cultivate Gewürztraminer. Its medium to low acidity makes it a good match for Middle Eastern and Moroccan cuisines.

Grüner Veltliner

This aromatic white grape is similar to Sauvignon Blanc, offering flavors of green bean, dill, and tropical fruits. It’s primarily established in the SouthEast region but is expanding throughout Pennsylvania. Its high acidity pairs well with spicy Asian dishes and richly flavored foods.

Also known as Blaufränkisch, Lemberger is a dark-skinned grape that produces wines with a tannic structure. Expect flavors of dried herbs integrated with red fruit notes. It pairs well with pasta, roasts, and grilled meats.

Marechel Foch

This dark-skinned grape produces wines that can range from light red to very dark. Marechel Foch wines are characterized by strong acidity and a relatively neutral flavor, making them a good match for roasted leg of lamb.

Merlot grapes in Pennsylvania produce red wines with savory and earthy flavors, often featuring hints of mushrooms. Depending on the climate, you may also detect jammy tastes with dark fruit notes like black cherry or plum. It pairs well with charcuterie or meaty pasta dishes.

Moscato is a light-bodied, sweet white wine with tropical fruit notes and floral aromas. It’s often served as a dessert wine and pairs well with fruit and vanilla-flavored desserts or spicy cuisine.

Similar to Concord grapes, Niagara grapes are primarily grown in the Northwest region. When made into wine, they offer grapey flavors with notes of candied lemon and floral jasmine. This medium-bodied wine pairs well with briny shellfish and interesting cheeses.

Noiret is a dark-skinned hybrid grape grown in the Northwest region. It offers a black pepper aroma with hints of raspberry and pairs well with pasta or beef dishes like pot roast.

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris

In the Keystone State, Pinot Grigio offers a crisp, citrus-infused experience that’s far from mundane. This dry, unoaked white wine is your go-to for pasta dishes that lean on garlic and olive oil, such as a classic seafood scampi or a vegetable primavera.

Pinot Noir is a grape that demands attention and skill, but rewards with exceptional wine. In Pennsylvania, this red offers a complex bouquet of flavors, from earthy undertones to fruity high notes. Whether you’re a wine novice or a seasoned aficionado, you’ll find it pairs splendidly with a variety of dishes, including grilled salmon and pork chops.

Riesling in Pennsylvania is a tale of regional diversity. From the peachy sweetness of the NorthWest to the floral and citrus nuances of the SouthCentral, this white wine is a versatile partner for spicy cuisines.

A transplant from Georgia, Saperavi has found a welcoming home in Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna Valley. This grape produces robust, full-bodied reds that are a match made in heaven for hearty, tangy dishes like barbecue pork or a meat-lover’s pizza.

Seyval Blanc

Seyval Blanc is a grape that laughs in the face of cold weather. The resulting wine is a neutral, citrus-forward white that evokes the classic French Chablis. It’s a refreshing choice for light salads and shellfish.

Steuben grapes yield a wine that’s both spicy and sweet, often described as grape juice for adults. This hybrid variety is incredibly versatile, pairing well with a range of briny and spicy dishes.

Known as Shiraz in other parts of the world, Syrah is a chameleon grape that adapts its flavor profile to the climate. In Pennsylvania, expect a wine that can range from jammy and fruity in warmer seasons to rich and earthy when the weather is cooler. It’s a softer red that pairs exceptionally well with lamb dishes.

Teroldego offers a rich, fruity experience with a dash of pine and almond for complexity. Its high acidity makes it an excellent choice for rich, hearty meals like pierogies smothered in caramelized onions or a creamy pasta carbonara.

Traminette is an aromatic grape that thrives in various regions of Pennsylvania. Whether crafted into a dry or sweet wine, its floral notes make it a delightful companion for a range of foods, from shellfish to blue cheese to ham.

Vidal Blanc

Vidal Blanc is a versatile grape that can be crafted into a range of styles, from crisp and bright to floral and complex. Depending on the region and style, it can pair with anything from light seafood dishes to rich, creamy desserts.

Vignoles is a grape with a tropical disposition. Whether aged in oak to produce a full-bodied wine or crafted into a sweet dessert wine, its fruity flavors make it a versatile choice for pairing with spicy foods, particularly Mexican and Asian cuisines.

Is Pennsylvania Known For Wine?

Pennsylvania has a rich wine history and is quite well-known for its wine. In fact, it is the eight-largest wine producing state in the United States!

The first hybrid of vitis vinifera and vitis labrusca grapes were found in Philadelphia in 1740. In 1987, the first commercial vineyard was established in 1787 by Pieree Legaux in Spring Mill, which is just northwest of Philadelphia.

Are Pennsylvania Wines Good?

Pennsylvania’s growing conditions are wildly different across the state, which might seem like a negative for growing wine grapes, but it’s actually a positive! Due to the region’s diverse growing environments, a wide range of grape varieties can be grown.

The wines produced in Pennsylvania are good, particularly whites and sweet wines – they are rich and bold in flavor, while pleasing on the palate.

Some of the most popular wines you’ll find in Pennsylvania are Pinot Noir , Albarino, and Cabernet Franc. However, Teroldego and Gruner Veltliner are also rising in popularity across the state.

5 Wine Weekend Getaways in Pennsylvania

Think rest, recreation … and rosé.

best wine tours in pa

Our top weekend wine trips include a getaway to Nemacolin’s expansive property / Photograph by Jordan Millington

Being the designated driver while your partner gets wine-drunk isn’t the most appealing weekend activity. Fortunately, there’s a way to solve that familiar dilemma — by booking a weekend wine getaway. Whether they’re close to celebrated vineyards or wine destinations all on their own, these hotels across the state will ensure that all in your party can imbibe as much as they want (within reason, of course). Think rest, recreation … and rosé.

Western Pennsylvania isn’t known for its wine culture, but that isn’t stopping Nemacolin, a sprawling luxury resort near Pittsburgh — about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Philly — from popping corks on $10,000-plus bottles. Wine flows throughout this more than 2,200-acre family-owned property, and not just during meals at Lautrec, its elegant French-leaning restaurant. You can also savor prestigious vintages in a private sommelier-led tasting, clink prosecco glasses after a couples massage at the spa, and sip pinot while painting a landscape in the art studio. Any of the glorious grape juice from the 11,000-bottle cellar can be ordered to enjoy throughout the resort. Go ahead: Show off with Nemacolin’s oldest bottle, a 1928 Château Latour that comes in at $11,405, or with Forté Venango, a lovely red port from Lake Erie’s Conneaut Cellars Winery . Rooms from $499. — Sarah Maiellano

The Inn at Grace Winery

You’ll find this bucolic 35-acre estate in Glen Mills, just 45 minutes outside the city. Cozy up in the seven-bedroom Manor House — part of which is the original 1734 Quaker farmhouse — or opt for a more private stay in any of the nine cottages, including the bi-level Hideaway (the farm’s former carriage house) and the Greenhouse, ideal for a double date or girls’ weekend. When you’ve had your fill of indulging in seasonal three-course dinners, making s’mores around a firepit, playing bocce, and befriending the inn’s horses, donkeys and alpacas, head to the renovated barn to taste wines made from estate-grown or PA-sourced grapes — like crisp chardonnay, sparkling cuvée and oak-aged merlot. Bonus: The grounds (including the vineyard!) are dog-friendly. Rooms from $210. — Laura Brzyski

The Lodge at Woodloch

No, there’s not a winery on-site at this 500-acre resort in the Poconos, about three hours from Philly. But that doesn’t matter: The adults-only, all-inclusive hideaway has a solid wine program, with a few PA bottles on the restaurant’s list. It’s the work of Leslie Britt, the lodge’s longtime sommelier, who only includes selections from sustainable, bio-dynamic or organic owner-operated vineyards in her lineup. Among them are Berks County-based Maple Springs Vineyard ’s New Leaf white, an American blend used at the resort’s garden dinners (and pairing classes). The blend changes every vintage and pairs well with seafood. While that vineyard isn’t quite next door, a scenic detour is worth the trip. Or enjoy a bottle at the lodge, between your nature-infused explorations (expect trails, a lake and more) and sessions at the expansive woodland spa. Rooms from $454. — Kristen Schott

Seven Springs Mountain Resort

This mountaintop resort in southwestern Pennsylvania, a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Philly, boasts all things young at heart: a massive Alpine slide built right into the ski slope, an outdoor rock wall, two pools, mini golf, bowling, an arcade. But Seven Springs is perfect for vino lovers looking to unwind — Helen’s, the on-site restaurant, has an award-winning bottle list, and there are nearby wineries like Glades Pike and Greendance , where fruit and berry varietals shine. (They’re worth a sip, we promise.) Mark your calendar for the end of next August to catch the resort’s annual festival featuring 25-plus PA-based wineries — a weekend spent sampling and sipping local blends just steps away from your cozy lodge room, cottage or chalet. Rooms from $169. — Laura Brzyski

Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square

There are reasons all your Instagram friends are spending weekends in the city of Lancaster: It’s less than two hours from Philly by car, the ride is scenic, and there’s bounteous sightseeing, shopping and dining to indulge in once you get there (PA wine included). The Lancaster Marriott offers a central base, with its own farm-to-table restaurant and bustling rooftop bar. Walk a few blocks to Deerfoot Downtown , a tasting room of the nano-scale Berks County vineyard, for sublime small-batch chambourcin and award-winning cab franc. Head to nearby wineries Waltz Vineyards for estate-grown semi-sweet moscato and Grandview for Grand Rouge, a premium bordeaux blend aged 22 months in French oak barrels. Don’t want to drive? Local limo services like Unique Limousine and Premier #1 Limousine Service will pick you up from the hotel and ferry you to top spots on the Lancaster County Winery Trail. Prices vary. — Erica Moody

There’s something to be said about drinking wine in the place where it grows. And given the quality of wines that Pennsylvania and New Jersey are producing, drinking locally means drinking well. From more casual, family-friendly environments to intimate one-on-one tastings with the winemakers themselves, local wineries not far afield from Philadelphia have a lot to offer. They’re all a little over an hour drive outside the city — and totally worth the trip.

Wayvine Winery & Vineyard 4374 Forge Road Nottingham, PA

Wayvine is not just a winery — it’s a lifestyle for the Wilson family, owners of this third-generation picturesque Nottingham farm. Zachary and James Wilson are the winemakers and vineyard managers who oversee the 18 different grape varieties grown on-site. Put plainly: Wayvine’s wine is fantastic. Selections are mainly dry red and white single varieties, but the Matriarch and the Chief are curious delicious standouts. The Matriarch is a blend of riesling, gruner veltliner, pinot grigio, and sauvignon blanc; the Chief is made from carmine, merlot, and cab franc. Carmine is a cross of cabernet sauvignon and carignan, which was considered a “mystery grape” when it appeared among a crop of Wayvine’s chardonnay. Shaded seating is available on the lawn or under a tasteful covered tent decorated with white lights and used barrels. Live music and local food trucks rotate weekly and smiling pups Chlöe, Maze, and Ember frolic and play among happy guests seated next to acres of vines. The winery also offers homemade cocktails and local beer, as well as yoga, art, and other events.

Chaddsford Winery 632 Baltimore Pike Chadds Ford, PA

Chaddsford Winery offers sparkling, sweet, and dry wine made from common European grapes like pinot grigio and cabernet sauvignon, as well as wine from French-American hybrids such as chambourcin, noiret, and the lovely and floral vignoles. The winery sits on five beautiful acres and offers a casual, fun ambiance and easy-drinking well-made wine from winemaker Gabriel Rubilar (although serious reserve styles are also available). The winery is open seven days a week and features a lawn for blankets and a shaded picnic area. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended for weekend table service and required for some of the more involved educational experiences such as the hour-long Barrel Room tasting. Winery tours start in the fall, led by the extremely knowledgeable head wine educator and winery manager, Rachel Rhan.

Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery 700 Folly Hill Road Kennett Square , PA

Nestled among the gentle, sloping hills of Kennett Square, Galer is a boutique winery whose approach marries nature, science, and art. Winemaker Virginia Mitchell offers sparkling, white, rosé, and red wines from her Icon, Reserve, and Huntress series, and Red Lion Chardonnay as her single vineyard designate. Gruner veltliner and albarino appear as special surprises among more expected choices like chardonnay, pinot noir, and cabernet franc. Galer’s wines are fruit-driven, dry, and elegant. Mitchell’s talent is particularly showcased by her sparkling chardonnay. Sit out back for sweeping views of the well-manicured vineyards and listen to the wind that sounds like waterfalls as it blows through the surrounding tall trees, or head inside for the tastefully done bar that opens onto an outdoor patio. Light snacks are available, and seating is first come, first served.

Karamoor Estate Vineyard and Winery 40 E. Skippack Pike Fort Washington, PA

The Karamoor experience begins with a long, tree-framed driveway that eventually runs through open fields dotted with barns before finally reaching acres of vineyards. If the entrance promises sophistication, the wine delivers. Winemaker Kevin Robinson creates high-quality international styles primarily from French varieties. Grapes are grown completely on premises at the 250-acre Fort Washington estate. Tickets are by appointment only and include a tour through the vineyards and barrel room and a brief the history of the Karabots family and the Karamoor property. The tour culminates with a tasting in the well-appointed main tasting room, and outdoor seating is available.

Sharrott Winery 370 S. Egg Harbor Road Hammonton, NJ

Sharrott Winery is a family-owned vineyard, winery, and wine bar located in Hammonton, New Jersey. Sharrott boasts a majestic outdoor setting and a beautiful indoor area with a spacious, airy bar with vineyard views. The friendly and knowledgeable staff is happy to guide you through a tasting menu that spans from light and easy dry reds and whites made of international and hybrid grapes to heavier, bolder reserve styles, as well as sweet fruity wines like Sharrott’s Just Peachy sangria. New Jersey is the Garden State, after all. The bar features a full food menu, and the winery is open seven days a week.

Penns Woods Winery 124 Beaver Valley Road Chadds Ford, PA

Winemakers Gino Razzi and Davide Creato can accommodate just about every palate by offering a variety of sweet, dry, sparkling, red, white, and rosé at Penns Woods Winery. Wines made from international and hybrid grapes are offered, and selections run the gamut from the playful and fun moscato rosé to the high-end aged Library Series Reserve cabernet franc, available only to members of its wine club. Penns Woods wine is made from 100 percent Pennsylvania fruit predominantly grown on-site at the 35-acre facility. Tastings for smaller groups and couples take place on the covered outdoor deck, while there’s plenty of tented outdoor space for larger groups who want to buy by the glass or the bottle on the lawn, where local beer and cider is also available. Penns Woods is open seven days a week and has a full calendar of events and classes. Bonus: A dollar from the sale of each bottle is donated to viticulture and enological research in the state of Pennsylvania to grow and support the wine community.

Grace Winery 50 Sweetwater Road Glen Mills, PA

Come to Grace Winery if you’re ready to feel as if you’ve taken a step back in time — indeed, the property traces itself to the 1680s. Its long and interesting history includes a role in the Underground Railroad and centuries later, it’s now a fully remodeled barn and tasting room that sits across from a grand manor called the Inn at the gorgeous 35-acre estate. Winemaker Andrew Yingst’s list features mostly traditional wines like chardonnay, pinot grigio, and cabernets franc and sauvignon, all of which are polished and well done. The Dragonfly Red Blend comprising syrah and cab sauv is notable for its bright and lovely expression. Grace offers a light menu by chef Dan Wood that is sure to please, as well as beer and spiked seltzer. Vineyard tours that include special tastings and visits to the property’s horses, goats, donkeys, and alpacas are available. Dogs on leashes are welcome, and resident pups Nala, Julep, and Rita are sure to say hello.

Vox Vineti 49 Sproul Road Christiana, PA

The excellently named Vox Vineti is Latin for “voice of the vineyard,” which winegrower and owner Ed Lazzerini wants to speak for the winery’s rocky site in Andrew’s Bridge, Pennsylvania. Vox Vineti’s short list of five single-vineyard wines made of Bordeaux varieties and nebbiolo are complex, earthy, and mineral-driven. The wines are made with the intention to reflect a sense of place rather than winemaking techniques, so cellar intervention is minimal. Vox’s wines pair well with food, and you won’t find any sweet styles. Production is extremely small, with between one and four barrels per label produced. Hour-long tasting appointments are intimate affairs on Saturdays and Sundays and are hosted by Lazzerini himself.

Va La Vineyards 8820 Gap Newport Pike Avondale, PA

Va La specializes in small production field blends made predominantly from Northern Italian and French varieties. Farmer/winemaker Anthony Vietri is a fascinating man making fascinating wine. Vietri has a philosophy of only working with what the vineyard gives, meaning that his blends change by vintage, depending on the integrity of the fruit and the willingness of the land. Va La’s current list contains an amber-hued skin-contact wine and four reds, each of which exhibits purity, distinction, and intensity. Vietri’s use of oak (Pennsylvania oak included) proves that restraint is talent, as it enhances and lifts up — rather than outshines — the grapes. Relax in Va La’s main indoor tasting room or on the back deck overlooking its small well-tended vineyard. Along with the wine, enjoy local artisan cheese and house specialties while chatting with the charming and wonderful Miss Jane behind the bar and tending tables, whose own love comes through with her sweet attention to detail and conversation about all things wine and life.

best wine tours in pa

White Horse Winery 106 Hall Street Hammonton, NJ

Pull into White Horse Winery under the wooden cut-out of a bright white horse and you’ll likely first encounter Macie, the black lab who serves as the winery’s official mascot. White Horse’s breezy and spacious tasting room showcases a rectangular wraparound bar and an outdoor patio that overlooks the vineyard and lawn dotted with covered picnic tables. Owners Brock Vinton and Brock J. Vinton II’s goals are to shine a light on New Jersey as a serious wine-making region — to that end, winemaker Seferino Cotzojay offers French varieties alongside hybrids such as Cayuga primarily in dry reds, whites, and rosé, although the list has some sweeter wines too. The dry rosé and chambourcin show Cotzojay’s deft skills. The winery also offers small plates and a full events calendar that contains food trucks and live music.

10 Best Wineries, Vineyards, & Tasting Rooms in Erie, PA

Our list of the best wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms focuses specifically on the city of Erie, PA, and the immediate surrounding areas; however, this area falls into one of the most prominent officially recognized wine regions in the US.

picture of a marina near Erie, PA

Lake Erie AVA is a large AVA ( American Viticultural Area ) – 42,000 acres are planted to grapes – and covers parts of New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In fact, it is the largest grape producing area in the eastern United States. There are two sub-AVAs nestled within it, as well: Grand River Valley AVA and Isle St. George AVA.

The climate here is continental, meaning there are four distinct seasons, often with significant weather patterns. Lake Erie provides a moderating influence, retaining warmth into the autumn and extending the growing season. However, the area is generally humid, which can pose a challenge to grape growers, as the moisture allows for certain vine pests and diseases to thrive.

The region is historically planted with grape varieties native to North America and hybrid grapes (those created by crossing local varieties with European ones). However, the number of vineyards planted with vinifera grape varieties – Riesling , Chardonnay , and others – is on the rise.

Lake Erie is a historic wine region in the United States – grapes have been grown here since the early 1800s. Prohibition took a toll on the region, resulting in the number of wine producers decreasing significantly in the mid 20th century. Nevertheless, the industry has bounced back, and there are currently around 58 wineries in operation.
