Incredible Kardamena Beach: Why You Need To Visit

Just 18 kilometers south of the town of Kos is the picturesque resort of Kardamena, which enjoys year long gentle breezes and the lapping waters of the Aegean Sea. This one time fishing town is blessed with some truly magnificent scenery and is dramatically set against the backdrop of the Kalymnos and Kapparo mountains.

Kardamena Beach

Kardamena beach is one of the most popular beaches on the Greek island of Kos. The sparkling ocean water and soft sand make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the incredible views. There are plenty of beach umbrellas and sun loungers for visitors to use, as well as a few restaurants and cafes for grabbing a bite. With its 3 kilometer strip of sandy beach, there’s plenty of space to soak up some sunny rays and take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Aegean. Even during the height of the season, quieter spots can be found by venturing just a little farther from the centre. For the more adventurous intent on mixing up their relaxation time with some adrenaline-inducing activities, parasailing, jet-skis, and similar activities are on hand. For the more adventurous still, scuba diving opportunities are on offer too along the beach in Kardamena if you’d like to take a peek at some of the marine life beneath the waters. For a slightly more relaxed and enjoyable day trip, try a stand-up paddling adventure and explore the hidden corners of Kardamena.

Plenty of Nightlife

With over 100 bars, discos and clubs to choose from, there’s surely something to satisfy all tastes. Most of the nightlife takes place in the somewhat predictably named Bar Street which hosts all styles of music from garage to indie to pop. Plenty of traditional Greek tavernas are on hand too, where you can sample local Greek style cuisine. Some of these restaurants are perfectly situated overlooking the harbor, which is always a delight to the eye in the evening, providing the ideal backdrop as you tuck into your souvlaki or maybe a moussaka, all complemented with a delicious Greek salad replete with olives and feta cheese. And don’t forget the freshly baked bread!

Another appeal about Kardamena is the ease with which visitors can explore other parts of the island such as Kos Town with its medieval castle and ancient walls. Some visitors take a short boat trip to the nearby volcanic island of Nisyros with its winding roads that lead up to the volcano’s smoking Stefanos Crater or caldera. Remember to take some decent foot gear when trekking the volcanic slopes and don’t rely on sandals and flip-flops.

General information

Kardamena Village Kos : Kardamena is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Kos lying 30 km south west of the capital and only 5 minutes from the airport. Its population reaches 2,000 inhabitants most of whom are engaged in tourism and agriculture.

Kardamena is well-developed in all aspects. Modern houses and traditional buildings spread along the crystalline bay while lush vegetation and green trees rise out of the surrounding landscape. The natural beauty of Kardamena attracts many visitors and there is also a small port where ferries make daily connections to the island of Nisyros.

Kardamena is one of the few areas in Kos with great infrastructure including a great number of accommodations and tourist amenities. However, the village retains its traditional charm and offers numerous sightseeings, like the church of Agia Barbara, Agioi Anargyroi and the beautiful church of the Virgin. Excavations have brought to light the Temple of Apollo, an ancient theatre and remains of that time.

The nightlife in Kardamena is rich and intense with a plethora of bars and clubs. Traditional taverns and restaurants are found along the waterfront serving delicious meals from the local and European cuisine. For swimming you can access the main beach of Kardamena offering a nice variety of watersports and tourist facilities.

• samanthajaynehobbs 19 Jun 2014 I never want to leave Kardamena gets a bad rap which I think is really unfortunate. Yes, it is a party town with lots of bars and clubs, but there are also a plethora of wonderful restaurants and tavernas serving traditional and delicious Greek cuisine. It is easy to avoid the bar scene and have a lovely chilled out evening on the seafront-the harbour has been developed tastefully in recent years. During the day there are an abundance of pools, snack bars, beach areas, there really is something for everyone here. If you prefer a quiet stretch of coast, why not try Banana Beach at the north end of the village. The biggest seller for me in Kardamena though is most definitely the people. There is something very special about the locals and tourists alike. And by tourists I mean those of us who come here year on year and consider Kos to be our second home. There is nowhere like it and that special something is very precious to Kardamena. If you go to the right places and meet the right people, you will never want to leave!
• joyce4 22 May 2009 Avoid drunken tourists Tour operators have changed deeply the costumes of many places in Kos. Kardamena look like a Liverpool surrounding with drunken English boys singing football songs. I suggest you take better control of the drunken guys and do not let them driving without hamlet. The all inclusive is the best way to destroy local economy, especially taverns, and offer low quality dishes. Many taverns were closed or were going to close because the all inclusive of many hotels is putting down the business. But epecially in the surrounding of Kefalos or even more far as Saint Theologos where the massive tourism did not strogly impact so far, the food was still excellent and you could see a smiling owner serving you. Don't sleep in Kardamena or Kos Town, unless you want the noise all nigth. choose a nice apartament in Kefalos or Mastichari and from there by scooter you can reach easily the nicest spots on the island. I am sure you will love Kos. It has so many beauties to give you. Just avoid any place where the English young men go, they destroy everything!
• elenadiev 01 Aug 2008 Simple and lovely We visited Kardamena when a friend of ours on Kos suggested to make a trip to Nisyros. So, we went to Kardamena to take the boat to Nisyros. It was a small and nice village with a lot of tourists. Wide roads, lovely cafes at the beach, nice coast to swim. I saw many clubs there, which were closed because we went on the daytime but I know that nightlife was rich in that village. When we returned from Nisyros, at night, we ate at "O Nisiotis" at the waterfront, great food, I trully recommend it.

Kardamena  is considered to be the second most visited tourist center on Kos Island after the town of Kos.

It’s very popular among tourists due to numerous hotels, taverns and bars. Kardamena is also considered to be the nightlife center.  A lot of clubs and bars are open until morning. There is an opinion that the local clubs are not only equal to those in Kos, they are even better.

The settlement itself is rather small but its narrow streets are quite interesting. A large number of taverns, blue balconies and window blinds, grape vines creeping up the walls, trees and a small church create a lovely atmosphere of the place.

Kardamena is surrounded by a few ancient ruins of the Castle of the Order of St. John, ruins of the  Temple of Apollo  and even a small Ancient Theatre.

Besides, Kardamena boasts a great ceramics tradition; here existed a large number of workshops, the so-called “ tsoukalaria ”.

From the harbor you can travel by tourist ship to the neighboring volcanic island of Nisyros.  Numerous “travel agencies” near the harbor will offer you the widest selection of sea voyages.

Kardamena offers a wonderful beach  located under a green slope, which adds much beauty to the place.

Kardamena - The queen of Kos nightlife

Built on the ruins of the ancient city of Alasarna, going back to the Classical period, the coastal village of Kardamena is a fun and colourful spot for holidays which attracts many visitors from around the world. Although the city itself is home to 1,800 residents, in the summer it turns into the most popular summer resort on the island. Tourists bask in the Mediterranean sun by day and troll the nightclubs by dusk. Kardamena is one of the liveliest destinations on Kos with a vivid nightlife and all the bars jammed at the Bar Street. The area takes over at night and becomes the number one location for parties . Kardamena will fully satisfy the restless party animal inside you with lots of music and dancing until the early hours.

The beach becomes alive again in the morning when tourists and residents head there for a swim in the refreshing water, for sunbathing or all sorts of water sports activities, including even parasailing. The beach tends to be crowded and busy due to its close proximity to the village. However, it is 3 km long and if you’re willing to walk a little bit, you’ll spot deserted parts with beautiful sand dunes and trees to lie under their natural shade.

In the village, beautiful and colourful buildings dot the coast. In the main square there are souvenir shops where, apart from the typical souvenirs to remind you your visit in Greece, you can buy small bottles of the local traditional drink of “kanellada” which is Kos ’ signature drink. Another way to spend your day when you stay in Kardamena is to take the ship to the nearby island of Nisyros and admire the awe-inspiring volcanic landscape. You could also visit the islet of Agia Eirini where there are hot springs with healing properties.

After a busy day, a good quality Greek lunch is a must! The seafood that is caught directly off the harbour is served in the local restaurants and “tavernas”. However, if you aren’t familiar at all with the Greek cuisine, you could taste traditional Greek specialties like the famous mousaka or meatballs.

If you are of the sporty type, the place offers a lot to do, such as dirt tracks and canyons around the village to explore. The terrain is also ideal for mountain biking till the historic village of Antimachia, although Kardamena has also rich cultural heritage. It is home of the ancient Temple of Apollo and various Roman ruins as well as basilicas like the church of Agia Barbara have been excavated here. As the city is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Alasarna, the “Alasarnia”, a festival with cultural events, such as concerts, plays or even cycling and chess contests, is organised annually.

Visitors from young to old enjoy the beauty of Kardamena and find that there is not a single day that is not spent in a more enjoyable place. The warm and friendly culture mixed with the delicious cuisine and golden sun drenched beaches are some of what draws people to this village.

Retail joint-venture operations at airports in Turkey and Israel topped $1.1 billion and $500 million respectively last year helping to push one of the world’s biggest duty-free operators to record annual revenue of $3.9 billion (€3.6 billion) in 2023.

Despite some considerable economic and geopolitical challenges, Hamburg-based travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann managed to slightly exceed 2019 sales for the first time since the pandemic, with year-over-year growth of 25%.

The fifth-generation family-owned company is now looking very positively at 2024 after a strong first quarter that was 24% ahead of the same period last year and above budget forecasts. On Thursday, co-CEO Raoul Spanger said that €4 billion was within sight. He told gathered media: “Strategic investments in the group’s business portfolio from 2023 will come into full effect this year (and) turnover should reach a new all-time high in 2024 and exceed €4 billion.”

Those investments included the buyout of its joint venture business in Israel—mainly at Tel Aviv Airport but also some border stores—to take 100% control, and the establishment of a regional office in Dubai from which to spearhead distribution, and eventually store operations, in the Middle East and Africa. One target will likely be Angola's new airport in the capital, Luanda.

The company also won a retail concession for the first time in Saudi Arabia at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport with joint venture partners Jordanian Duty Free Shops and the diversified Astra Group ; and signed the contract for stores aboard Aroya, the first vessel from newly established cruise company Cruise Saudi.

“By entering into carefully selected new partnerships, expanding existing ones, and making strategic investments in other business segments and channels we continue to become more international,” said Heinemann’s other co-CEO Max Heinemann.

JV deals have long been a hallmark of Heinemann’s expansion strategy into new markets. With the global travel retail channel consolidating rapidly, as exemplified most recently by the huge Avolta/Dufry merger with Autogrill, Heinemann is taking steps to protect its market position.

The travel retailer’s business is dominated by Europe with 59% of turnover (€2.1 billion) last year. The region—where the retailer’s top airport locations are Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Oslo, and Vienna—also had the fastest growth (24%), largely on the back of rising passenger numbers.

However, Norway, historically one of Heinemann’s biggest sales hotspots, was negatively impacted by the imposition of much lower limits on tobacco allowances and the devaluation of the Norwegian krone.

Stability in geographical diversity

Geographical diversification offers greater resilience when it comes to country legislative shocks and currency volatility, and also regional impacts. For example, last year, the continuing fighting in Gaza, triggered by a deadly Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, came out of the blue and hit travel and retail sales at Tel Aviv Airport in the final quarter.

Heinemann’s sales director for Middle East Africa, Bernard Schlafstein said that it would have been a record year at Tel Aviv had the war not started. Naturally, this impacted the growth for the whole Middle East & Africa business which ended the year up 18%, but would have been higher.

On the plus side, the nature of the shopping at Israel's biggest airport means that revenue has picked up quickly. Depressed tourism is not a major factor for store sales as it is outbound Israelis doing most of the buying, and collecting their purchases on return.

That non-reliance on foreign tourism is borne out by results this year. Schlafstein commented: “Our numbers are almost back to last year at around 85% to 90%, even though the passenger figures are much lower.” One key purchase driver is that pricing at the airport is significantly lower than in the domestic market. This has led to very high average transaction values (ATVs) in the core duty-free shop where about 80 pay-points are present to cater to the enormous demand.

However, the standout location was Istanbul Airport where Heinemann operates with its joint venture partners Unifree and ATU Duty Free. There, turnover surpassed €1 billion and Schlafstein described it as “unstoppable.”

With the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, rich Russians have been using the gateway—and also Dubai International (where they are the second most important nationality for Dubai Duty Free)—as a connecting route to other destinations. Their presence meant that last year at Istanbul, 40% of fashion turnover came from Russians. This year, so far, revenue at the Turkish Airlines hub is above budget for Heinemann.
