Queen Mary 2 Itineraries

Queen mary 2 review, review of queen mary 2.

The 2004-built RMS Queen Mary 2 cruise ship is the oldest and most famous of all Cunard liners, with fleetmates the sisterships MS Queen Victoria (2007) and MS Queen Elizabeth (2010), and Cunard's newest liner (2024-built) Queen Anne .

The vessel (IMO number 9241061) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310627000) and registered in Hamilton . The previous flag state/registry was the UK/Southampton (MMSI 235762000).

History - construction and ownership

Cunard Line is a British-American cruise brand, operated by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation (shipowner). Cunard is headquartered in Southampton (England UK) and is among the world's oldest passenger shipping companies . In 2015, Cunard Line celebrated its 175th anniversary.

RMS Queen Mary 2 cruise ship (Cunard)

Cunard held the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic voyage for most of the next 30 years. In 1968 Cunard Line withdrew from year-round service to concentrate on cruising and summer transatlantic sailings for vacationers. The Queens were replaced by QE2 (Queen Elizabeth 2), which was designed for her special dual role. In 1998, Carnival Corporation acquired Cunard. Five years later, Queen Elizabeth 2 was replaced on her transAtlantic runs by QM2 (Queen Mary 2).

Currently, Cunard is the only shipping company operating a regularly scheduled passenger service between North America and Europe.

RMS Queen Mary 2 cruise ship construction

The 1300-passenger ship RMS Queen Mary 2 is Cunard's current flagship, one of the most modern (by design and technologies) and currently the world's biggest ocean liner specifically designed for regular Transatlantic ocean crossings. QM2 was created with perfection, from bow to stern, with gorgeous public areas, lavish restaurants, ballrooms, theatres, bars and lounges, and even a Planetarium (the first at sea). In order for passengers to be well protected when the ship is moving fast (30 knots), invisible windscreens were built.

Stephen Payne was the vessel's naval architect - a CCL-Carnival's designer, who resembled features of some former ocean liners. These aspects include three thick black lines which recall the appearance of the first Queen Mary. Because Queen Mary 2 is too large and cannot dock in all ports, the passengers are ferried in tenders to and from the ship. For transporting passengers to shore, tenders pull up to loading stations, which have large hull doors for hydraulically opening outwards and forming a boarding platform.

The vessel changed its flag-state in 2011 (from London UK to Hamilton Bermuda) in order to allow shipboard weddings at sea. RMS stands for "Royal Mail Ship" - a gesture to Cunard Line's history.

RMS Queen Mary 2 is the only ocean liner with regularly scheduled Transatlantic cruise crossings between England and the USA (Southampton and NYC New York). She provides premium travel experiences with contemporary amenities, highly-trained staff, and most professional crew. By GT-tonnage (148528 tons) QM2 is also one of the world's largest passenger ships .

RMS Queen Mary 2 cruise ship (Cunard)

Cunard QM2's first World Cruise started on January 10, 2007, navigating around the globe for 81 days. On February 20, in Sydney NSW, she met Queen Elizabeth 2 - being also on a World Voyage. Numerous viewers were at the harbor bridge although the queens' arrival time was 5:42 am. This was the first time they met since the original Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary served in 1941 as troopships.

Queen Mary 2 embarked on a 3-month voyage around the world from Southampton on January 10, 2012. She traveled south and afterward east around Africa, then along the east coastline of Australia heading to Japan and back to Southampton through the Suez Canal.

Another Royal Rendezvous took place in New York on January 13, 2011, at 6:45 pm, in front of the Statue of Liberty. Queen Mary 2 met Queen Victoria and the brand-new Queen Elizabeth. The two other ships- QE and QV crossed the Atlantic in tandem for the event. The fireworks and the red lights of the Empire State Building marked the event. For the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the Queens met again in Southampton on June 5, 2012.

Decks and Cabins

RMS Queen Mary 2 staterooms (1363 total) include 170 Suites, 813 Balcony, 74 Oceanview (of which 12 Lanai/Atrium-View), 286 Inside rooms, in all 29 categories. The ship has 479 connecting, 26 wheelchair-accessible and 15 studios (single-occupancy cabins). The largest are the Grand Duplex Suites (1600 ft2 / 149 m2 plus 645 ft2 / 60 m2 terrace).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 13 passenger-accessible and 11 with cabins.

Passenger staterooms are in the following types: Standard Inside (no window), Lanai/Standard Atrium View (Standard Inside with a small window), Standard Oceanview (1 small non-opening porthole with seaviews), Britannia Club Balcony and Britannia Balcony (with glass-fronted step-out balconies) and the rest are Suites (Princess, Queen, Penthouse, Royal, Duplex, Grand Duplex).

Theoretically, RMS Queen Mary 2 is a classless ship, but passengers are actually separated (like on all Cunard liners) as their onboard dining locations are according to their cabin's category/cruise fares paid.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

All Cunard ships have 3 main restaurants offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner: Queens Grill Restaurant is designated for guests staying in Queens Grill accommodations. Evening dining is anytime between 6.30 pm - 9.00 pm. Princess Grill Restaurant - for guests staying in Princess Grill accommodations. Evening dining is anytime between 6.30- 9 pm. Britannia Restaurant - for guests staying in Britannia Balcony, Oceanview or Inside Staterooms. Dining arrangements depend on the class of accommodation passengers have chosen. Most of them prefer the Britannia class and dine in the main restaurant. Passengers can upgrade to a "junior suite" and then dine in Princess Grill, or choose a suite and then dine in the Queens Grill. Thus they are grouped by Cunard as the so-called Grill Passengers who are permitted to the Queens' Grill Lounge and may also use the private area on deck 11 and its whirlpool. The other public areas are allowed to use by all passengers.

Each stateroom is allocated and most cabins are allocated to Britannia restaurant - two-story with 1,300 seats. Princess Grill on deck 7 is for the more expensive staterooms- the Queen's Grill on the same deck - for the very best ones. Fares include all meals in the allocated restaurant and the afternoon tea served in King's Court or Queen's Room. Food is excellent - you may choose different starters, main courses, desserts, being changed every day. Dining optional venues - instead of in allocated restaurants, you can choose to eat in the self-service informal King's Court on deck 7 (with several buffet areas) or in the Golden Lion pub on deck 2. You may have breakfast or lunch at the King's Court area which is open twenty-four hours a day - it serves as a buffet restaurant. Todd English restaurant on deck 8 serves superb food, call in the morning to reserve a table.

Each cabin has free room service with a simple menu - burgers, pasta, crackers which can be ordered by phone at any time. If you order drinks, they are charged at bar prices.

When you book you may request a sitting. The Britannia restaurant has two for dinner - at 6 p.m. and at 8.30 p.m. Princess Grill and Queens Grill do not have sittings - when they are open, you can dine any time you choose. A note for confirmation sitting and table number will be left in your stateroom when you board. Lunch and breakfast do not require allocated tables or sittings.

NOTE: During the ship's major drydock refit in 2016, "Winter Garden" was replaced with "Carinthia Lounge". The new lounge offers alternative breakfast, lunchtime options, and premium coffees. Also during the 2016 refurbishment, "Todd English" (Mediterranean cuisine) was replaced with "The Verandah" - a contemporary French cuisine restaurant. The buffet-style "Kings Court" was completely transformed, with the addition of a smokehouse (alternative dining concept).

Passengers staying in suites are offered new menus in refurbished settings by Princess Grill and Queens Grill restaurants. Britannia Restaurant, Golden Lion pub, and Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar all boast refreshed menus. Cunard Line has created many of the new menus in its development kitchen in Southampton.

Follows the complete list of Queen Mary 2 restaurants and food bars.

Transatlantic cruise travel is more formal as a dress code. During the day, passengers definitely tend towards country club casual. Which one applies each night is noted in pre-voyage documentation and daily program in all staterooms.

  • Formal (men - dinner jacket with a black tie or dark business suit; women- evening dress)
  • Semi-formal (men- jacket and a tie; women - cocktail dress/trouser suit)

RMS Queen Mary 2 cruise ship (Cunard)

As it is with most modern passenger ships, the major public rooms onboard are situated on the lowest decks while the passenger cabins are stacked above them. This way the designers made it possible more staterooms to be equipped with balconies not affected by ocean waves.

The Illuminations Theatre, the first at sea Planetarium and a Cinema are on Deck 2, where are also the Empire Casino, the Royal Court Theatre, the Grand Lobby, the Golden Lion Pub, Britannia Restaurant's level 1. The upper level of Illuminations Theatre, Britannia Restaurant, and Royal Court Theatre are on Deck 3, together with a shopping arcade, Queen's Room, Veuve Cliquot (champagne bar), Sir Samuel's (wine bar), Chart Room, G32 Nightclub.

On Deck 8 is the Todd English Restaurant, 8000-volume Library, Book Shop, a large outdoor swimming pool.

QM2 also has a large amount of commissioned artworks (5000+) by artists from 16 different countries. These are visible in the hallways/corridors, lobbies, various public rooms.

Each evening a daily program for the next day will be delivered to your stateroom, showing detailed information about activities on board, opening and closing times of bars, restaurants, and other facilities. There is also an ongoing program of plays, shows, lectures. Several live bands with dancing every evening will entertain you on board. If you prefer disco - visit the G32 nightclub. Do not forget Canyon Ranch spa on deck 7 which offers from massages to manicures, jacuzzis, and saunas.

Cunard cruise ship weddings, ceremonies, and parties could be held in some of the QM2's lounges. There is no chapel on the ship.

Queen Mary 2 Wiki

RMS Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is Cunard Line's oldest and one of the world's most famous ocean liners of all time. As vessel class and design, QM2 is an "ocean liner" designed specifically for regularly scheduled passenger express Transatlantic crossings between the UK and the USA. Departures are from 3 homeports - in the USA ( New York City ), the UK ( Southampton ) and Germany ( Hamburg ). Most of these voyages are according to a fixed Transatlantic schedule with 7-day North Atlantic crossings between Southampton and NYC. The short (7-day) itinerary is usually without any ports of call.

Cunard's QM2 construction was completed on December 23, 2003. The inaugural cruise/maiden voyage to Fort Lauderdale Florida started on January 12, 2004.

The ship's Godmother was HM Queen Elizabeth II (UK's ruling monarch/1926-2022). The naming ceremony was held on January 8th, at Port Southampton. The special event featured live musical performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra/RPO and the Royal Marines Band (the British Navy's musical wing).

The ship was named "RMS Queen Mary 2" in respect of Cunard Line's Royal Mail service.

RMS Queen Mary 2's building cost is over USD 900 million - ranking the vessel nearly 2 times more expensive than most of the currently operated cruise liners. The construction was costly because the ship is big and the materials used were of the highest possible quality. Plus, vessel's construction demanded 40% more steel than an ordinary cruising vessel. When launched in 2004, QM2 became world's biggest cruise liner ever .

QM2's cruising speed of 30 knots (56 kph / 35 mph) ranks it world’s fastest cruise liner currently in operation. The vessel's service speed is 26 knots (48 kph / 30 mph). RMS Queen Mary 2 is the first cruise ship with CODAG propulsion system (“combined diesel and gas”) based on gas turbines that magnify diesel-produced power.

Illuminations Theatre is the first Planetarium at sea. The ship also has the largest Library at sea (8000+ volumes), the first Canyon Ranch SpaClub at sea, a total of 15 dining venues, 5 swimming pools, 620-m wraparound promenade deck, onboard kennels (available only on the transatlantic crossings). QM2 is Post-Panamax vessel (can’t pass through the old Panama Canal locks), designed specifically for Transatlantic crossings. Among the fun facts are, that on Transatlantic crossings, QM2 is supplied with about 65 000 fresh eggs and about 150 tons of food. Propulsion demands are however even more impressive. QM2 ship needs 1850 tons of diesel oil and 1000 tons of fuel for the gas turbines on a regular 7-day North Atlantic crossing between USA and UK. It takes 6 hours to fill her storage tanks.

In August 2004 (during the Summer Olympics in Greece), the ship was chartered and stayed docked for 2 weeks in Port Piraeus (Athens) serving as ship hotel. Among the guests were Tony Blair (UK's Prime Minister), Jacques Chirac (France's President), George W. Bush (USA's President), the whole US Olympic basketball team, John Cleese (UK actor), Richard Dreyfuss (US actor), Harold Evans (UK journalist and author), George Lucas (film director and producer), Carly Elisabeth Simon (US singer), Rod Stewart (UK singer), Donald Trump (media magnate / future US President).

On October 19, 2011, the vessel changed its registry (flag-state) from UK to Bermuda which allows cruise wedding ceremonies to be held on the ship. The word "Southampton" on the stern was replaced with "Hamilton". This was the first time in Cunard's history when its liner was registered not in the UK.

In early-February 2017, Cunard Line announced company's sponsorship of the "Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show". This prestigious all-breed conformation show is held annually in NYC New York since 1877. The onboard show took place on February 11-14. The winner and its owner were offered a free QM2 Transatlantic Crossing.

On December 8, 2017, QM2 operated a cruise-themed after "The New York Times" crossword's 75th anniversary. During "The Crossword Crossing" (7-night Transatlantic cruise NYC to Southampton), QM2 passengers had the unique chance to test their crossword skills and meet the newspaper's crossword experts (including Ben Zimmer, Deb Amlen, Joel Fagliano). They offered insight into the media's popular puzzles via daily scheduled themed events (lectures, game sessions, other activities). The New York Times' first crossword puzzle was published in 1942. It became a daily occurrence by 1950 and is now one of the media's most popular features.

On itinerary August 31-September 7, 2017, the passenger liner hosted the 2nd "Cunard Transatlantic Fashion Week" cruise from Southampton to NYC. These themed voyages bring together some of the world's most renowned fashion brand representatives. On each of the 7 days at sea are hosted fashion shows, formal dinners, exclusive events, workshops, and talks. Among the 2017 voyage's VIPs were Julien Macdonald (celebrity designer) and Colin McDowell (fashion writer). Three new for Cunard pop-up stores on the QM2 ship offered for purchasing latest fashion collection items, including Mulberry (purses and bags), Lucy Choi (designer shoes) and Melissa Odabash (designer swimwear).

An interesting fact is that a baby boy was born on board RMS Queen Mary 2 on January 17, 2016, while en route to New York . The ship was on a transatlantic crossing from Southampton when a German passenger went into labor. The ship doctor delivered the baby. The baby boy, who arrived 3 weeks early, was named Benjamin Brooklyn.

Starting in January each year, RMS Queen Mary 2 "World Cruise" is a huge event on the cruising market. Compared to other lines, Cunard's World Cruises deals offer affordable prices, exciting destinations and "big and famous" ports of call to visit around the world.

Cunard World Cruise 2022 (Queen Mary 2)

RMS Queen Mary 2 has scheduled a 118-day World Voyage 2022 which replaced all scheduled QM2 cruises departing January 3 through April 3, 2022 (including a voyage to South America).

The voyage departs roundtrip from Southampton (104-day, booking code M203I) and from New York City (118-day, booking code M202F) and visits Greece, Israel, Dubai, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong China, Australia, Bali, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Italy, Portugal. The itinerary also features two Suez Canal crossings (on both the eastbound and westbound route) and overnights in Haifa, Dubai, Hong Kong, Sydney NSW, Singapore, a late-night departure from Colombo.

Queen Mary 2 World Cruise 2022 is bookable either as a full voyage (118-night / 104-night) or in several shorter segments from NYC (to Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney Australia), Southampton (to Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney NSW, Fremantle) and itineraries departing out of Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia. The full itinerary visits 27 ports in 16 countries and 33 UNESCO Sites. Customers with full itinerary (roundtrip) bookings enjoy a Welcome Onboard Reception, services by World Voyage Concierges, use of an exclusive lounge, Gala Event ashore, complimentary daily gratuities.

Prices for the 118-night full voyage (NYC roundtrip Jan 3 - May 1) started from GBP 13000 / ~USD 16900 / ~EUR 14300 per person (inside stateroom at double occupancy). Prices for the 104-night full voyage (UK roundtrip Jan 10 - April 24) started from GBP 10100 / ~USD 13150 / ~EUR 11100 per person (inside stateroom at double occupancy).

RMS Queen Mary 2 refurbishments review

The ship's last drydock was in 2023 (October 23 to November 12, at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam ) and mainly for routine/general maintenance and class works, inspections, a technical overhaul, hull cleaning and repainting.

QM2's drydock in 2021 (August-September) was at Damen Shiprepair Brest ( Brest France ), during which were conducted mainly general maintenance works, as well as hull cleaning and painting.

During Cunard Line’s 175th anniversary celebrations was announced that QM2 enters 25-day long drydock in 2016 (May 27 to June 21). The drydock (at Blohm+Voss Shipyard in Hamburg Germany ) resulted in the following changes:

The Winter Garden lounge on Lido Deck 7 was redesigned and transformed into the new Carinthia Lounge. The lounge is named after the Cunard's two Carinthia ships – RMS Carinthia (1925-1940) and RMS Carinthia (1956-2006).

On deck 8, the ship’s signature restaurant Todd English was replaced by “The Verandah Restaurant”. The new restaurant (available on both QM2 fleetmates) offers gourmet French regional cuisine (with seasonal influences) plus a fine French wines list. The new specialty dinner is at a surcharge and opens for lunch and dinner only. The Verandah Grill has its own bar selling pre/post-meal drinks.

172 suites (all Princess and Queen Grill suite accommodations on the QM2 ship’s upper decks) were comprehensively redesigned to maximize space. Their decoration was also changed, reflecting the Cunard Line’s history. The changes include new luxury textures in soothing colours and new carpeting (with a rugs-design inspired by the old RMS Queen Mary liner).

Extensive development work involving Cunard guests and the onboard Queen Mary 2 galley teams has been undertaken over the last eighteen months in the redesign of this very popular area of the flagship. Enhancements are planned to both the service and culinary offerings in Kings Court with the refreshed venue featuring new menus, the convenience of pre-set tables and waiter-served drinks.

The King's Court (self-service buffet restaurant on lido deck 7 midship) was majorly redesigned. Both central-location elevators were removed to create a vast open space. This way, the central buffet stations area became more open, allowing an easygoing flow. The restaurant’s seating was also reconfigured for a less crowded experience, adding the convenience of pre-set tables and waiter-served drinks. New menus were introduced (including a smokehouse alternative), plus pre-set tables and waiter-served beverages. Among the new menu choices are hot/cold meals, light snacks, afternoon treats, alternative cuisine specialties (including Asian, Indian, Italian, Tex Mex. At the center stage, ship's chefs entertain guests through cooking demonstrations in the evenings.

(King’s Court) The Chef’s Galley area (that offers for lunch pasta and pizzas) on select evenings additionally offers Chef’s Table menu. This is a fine wine pairing and food tasting VIP dining event hosted by the ship’s Executive Chef. The buffet’s new design features modern chandeliers, new artworks (circus-themed), areas with timber flooring, lots of mirrors.

Both Grill restaurants (on Lido deck 7) were redesigned and renovated with a new color scheme, furnishings, and flooring. After the 2016 refurbishment, they both have new menus, more 2-seat tables and were reconfigured for more privacy (by increasing the space between tables).

15 new single-occupancy staterooms were added on deck 2 portside (taking space from the Casino) and deck 3L portside (in the place of the Images Photo Gallery).

The Britannia Restaurant (dining room on deck 2) was redesigned too. It was renovated with new decor and upgraded with new dining menus and the Cunard's "White Star Service" standards.

Updated menus were introduced also at Golden Lion (pub) and Veuve Clicquot (wine / Champagne bar).

30 new balcony staterooms category “Britannia Club Balcony” plus 5 Inside staterooms were added on deck 13 (in the deck’s forward part)

10 new kennels (for cats and dogs) were added to the existing 12 kennels on deck 12. This is the best amenity for passengers traveling with pets. Cruise ship kennels were the Cunard’s signature feature on the line’s former flagship RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. On the ocean liner QM2, they were first introduced at the Duke of Windsor's suggestion.

On QM2, the kennel area was expanded, an owners lounge and a new pet playground were added. The extended outdoor area is intended for dog walking and features a lamppost (from Liverpool ) and a fire hydrant (from NYC ). In 2016, Cunard partnered with Barbour (British sportswear brand) to offer smart pet accessories on the QM2 ship (including jackets, collars, leashes).

On deck 2, two of the Grand Lobby's elevators were removed. This made more space for the lobby lounge, which was also redesigned and refurbished with high-back chairs and a new Baby Grand piano.

Around 55,200 m2 (594,200 ft2) of new carpets have been laid throughout the ship. All new cruise cabins increased the QM2 ship’s capacity from 2620 passengers (max 3151) to 2726 passengers (max 3271). Refurbishment's fun facts: man-hours (over 1 million), new carpets (55,200 m2 / 594,200 ft2), new framed pictures number (4,000), hull paint quantity (over 15,000 litres / 3,962 US gallons).

QM2's drydock 2016 refurbishment cost Cunard ~GBP 90 million.

Cunard Line Queen Mary 2 Cruise Ship Review

The Queen of the seas has returned. The Queen Mary 2 cruise ship is one of the most iconic ocean liners in the world.

This review will give you an exclusive look at what it’s like to be on board Cunard Queen Mary 2, from staying in a Queens Grill Suite to restaurant reports and entertainment reviews. You’ll get a more comprehensive view of what life is like for passengers on this ship while they enjoy some of the best views in the world!

Cunard Line Queen Mary 2 cruise ship

History of Queen Mary 2 Cruise Liner

RMS Queen Mary 2 is a transatlantic ocean liner that first set sail in January 2004 for Cunard Line. She was named after her predecessor Queen Mary, and she sails on a regular basis between Southampton, U.K. and New York City, U.S.A., making her the only ocean liner to regularly cross the Atlantic in both directions.

Now part of the Carnival cruise line group, Cunard was established by Samuel Cunard in 1840. Cunard ships were among the fastest making transatlantic voyages.

The QM2 is one of three Cunard Line vessels currently in operation (the others being Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth). She was named by the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth during an official ceremony held on 8 January 2004.

The maiden voyage of QM2 departed Southampton on 12 January 2004 for New York City. QM2 has since made thousands of transatlantic cruises. She has been extensively refurbished in 2016 and 2020.

Cunard Line’s flagship vessel offers a range of cabins to suit all budgets – from basic inside cabins with no views to luxurious suites on board with access to large balconies. Read on for our exclusive review of this majestic floating palace.

Queen Mary 2 Overview

The legendary cruise ship that is the Queen Mary 2 has returned to the ocean waves once again. On 13 December 2021, Cunard’s flagship cruise liner made her first transatlantic crossing since the pandemic.

The Queen Mary 2 is a ship that can do it all. This ocean liner has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation.

The QM2 is one of the most luxurious cruise liners in operation today, and offers a wide variety of on-board amenities that cater to all types of guests. These include a casino, the Royal Court Theatre, the Queens Room Ballroom, G32 nightclub, several pools and the Illuminations Planetarium. There are also kennels on Deck 12, available for cats and dogs on transatlantic crossings.

Guests can admire many works of art in the public rooms including an enormous tapestry by Barbara Broekman in the Britannia Restaurant and an Art Deco inspired bronze relief panel by John McKenna in the Grand Lobby. Fun fact: there’s an image of Homer Simpson hidden in the North America panel!

Queens Grill Suites

Whether you’re taking a relaxing cruise around the Mediterranean or crossing the Atlantic in style, the Queen Mary II Queens Grill Suites are sure to make your voyage unforgettable.

The Queen Mary 2 Queens Grill Suites offer guests the utmost in luxury and comfort. With their own restaurant, special privileges and luxurious furnishings, it is no wonder that these suites are among the most popular on board the ship. The Balmoral and Sandringham suites are Cunard’s most luxurious cruise suites .

Guests who stay in a Queen Mary 2 Queens Grill Suite can enjoy exclusive access to The Queens Grill restaurant and The Grills Lounge , as well as special privileges such as priority boarding and luggage handling. The suites are also outfitted with luxurious bedding and a flat-screen TV.

Boasting a large private balcony with reclining chairs and a walk-in closet, this suite is larger than some apartments! There’s a whirlpool bath, dressing table, well-stocked glassware cabinet and a large flat screen TV. A writing desk and comfy armchairs give plenty of seating options.

These suites come with their own personal butler, priority tender services and priority disembarkation. We love the Champagne and chocolates on arrival and the pre-dinner canapés.

The complimentary bar is stocked with two bottles of spirits or wine of your choice and soft drinks. In-suite dining is available from the Queens Grill menu – we didn’t get time to try it but this would also be a fun thing to do.

Queen Mary 2 Restaurants and Bars

The Queen Mary 2 is known for her amazing dining rooms, and there are plenty of them to choose from on board. No matter what you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find something to your taste on the Queen Mary 2.

Our personal favourites are the Queens Grill and The Verandah , but there’s something for everyone! Guests can opt for a range of drinks packages that can be ordered before you sail or on board.

Queens Grill is reserved for those staying in the Queens Grill Suites. This elegant restaurant offers an upscale experience with dishes like lobster bisque and rack of lamb. Your dinner table is available at whatever time you wish between 6.30 to 9 pm.

There’s also a good breakfast selection, with dishes such as eggs benedict, kedgeree and omelettes cooked to order.

Dine on Wedgwood crockery in the Queens Grill

Princess Grill restaurant is reserved for those staying in a Princess Grill Suite. It offers fine dining with an extensive menu.

Britannia Club Restaurant – available exclusively for those staying in Britannia Club Balcony Staterooms, this intimate restaurant has daily changing menus.

Britannia Restaurant – the main dining room on board the Queen Mary 2 has an elegant decor and wide choice of dishes. A children’s menu is also available.

Kings Court – this self-service restaurant has a great selection of food, from pizza to sushi and stir fries.

Steakhouse at The Verandah is a luxurious fine dining restaurant specialising in French cuisine and steak in particular. There’s a supplement to eat at The Verandah, which in our opinion is well worth it for the attentive service and delicious dishes. Don’t miss the Caribbean lobster cocktail and the Australian grass-fed wagyu beef.

Wagyu beef at The Verandah restaurant

The Golden Lion pub has a traditional British menu with items like fish and chips and shepherd’s pie.

The Carinthia Lounge is a relaxing spot for a light breakfast or lunch.

The Boardwalk Cafe is al fresco and open on trips to sunny climes.

24 hour complimentary room service is also included for all passengers. Grills guests can also order from the full Queens Grill or Princess Grill menu.

Afternoon tea is served at a variety of locations around the ship, for a supplement. In the Queens Room, white gloved waiters are on hand from 3.30 to 4.30 pm each day.

Grills guests can enjoy tea in the Grills Lounge , while a more casual version is available in Kings Court. The Godiva Lounge has a decadent chocolate themed tea, while we highly recommend the Champagne Laurent-Perrier afternoon tea served in The Champagne Lounge .

Chart Room is a stylish cocktail bar with 20 zodiac themed drinks.

Commodore Club is an elegant viewing lounge overlooking the bow of the ship.

Gin & Fizz has a fine range of premium gins and a central location on board.

Queens Room is the largest ballroom at sea, but it also hosts many other activities such as afternoon tea and fencing classes.

Queen Mary 2 Entertainment

Queen Mary II daytime activities include several pools, a cinema, a fitness center, libraries and shops. The entertainment on board the ship is top-notch.

There are daytime presentations by expert guest speakers and nightly performances around the ship from some of the world’s best musicians and dancers. We particularly enjoyed a folk music concert and a harpist recital.

Entertainment on board the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship

Queen Mary 2’s Gala Evenings are legendary. Taking place throughout the ship, they have a specific dress code and are based on a particular theme such as Black and White or Roaring 20s.

Casino – If you’re looking for some excitement, then the casino on board the Queen Mary is the place to be! You can try your luck at blackjack, roulette, or poker.

G32 nightclub is the place to dance like no one is watching and to enjoy DJ beats and live music.

Illuminations Planetarium – This 3D cinema is the largest planetarium at sea. It offers first run Hollywood feature films as well as concerts and special events throughout the voyage.

The Illuminations Planetarium

The Royal Court Theatre spans two decks and seats almost 1,000 people.

The Promenade Deck can be found on Deck 7. Jogging is allowed between 8 am to 8 pm, so as not to disturb guests on Deck 6.

The Play Zone on Deck 6 has inside and outside zones for children aged 1-12 years and a range of art and sports activities.

Shops – on Deck 3, Queen Mary 2 offers several shops for passengers where you can find both duty-free shopping as well as souvenirs to take home with you. There’s a good range of Cunard branded items as well as fashion clothes, luxury jewelry, designer watches and formal wear.

The Library – this 8,000 volume library is the largest library at sea.

There are two outdoor pools on board this luxury ocean liner, as well as the indoor Pavilion Pool on Deck 12, which has a retractable roof. For children, the Minnows Pool can be found outside on Deck 6.

There are also two hot tubs next to the Pavilion Pool. On Deck 11, there’s a private outdoor area with a hot tub, open to all Grill Passengers staying in Princess Grill and Queens Grill Suites.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can head to the sports area on Deck 13 and play basketball or short tennis. When the weather is good, try your hand at deck quoits and shuffleboard. On Deck 12 there’s The Fairways Golf Simulator.

The Fitness Suite is located on Deck 16 aft. It features a wide range of cardio machines, bikes, treadmills and free weights. You can book a session with a personal trainer for a fee.

Queen Mary 2 Fitness Suite treadmills

The on board salon offers hair treatments for men and women as well as a barbers, manicures and pedicures with a lovely sea view.

Head to Mareel Spa if you want to treat yourself to a day of relaxation. The treatments are well worth it.

The spa has a hydrotherapy pool, thermal suite with aromatic steam room, Finnish sauna and sensory showers as well as a relaxation area. You can purchase either a single or multiday pass.

We recommend popping into the spa reception on embarkation day, as the therapists are on hand to show you the treatment rooms and to explain the various services on offer. We booked into an Aroma Stone Therapy , a Deep Tissue Muscle Massage and a Dynamic Resurfacing Precision Peel facial. The treatments are very effective and we felt the benefits for several weeks afterwards.

Cunard Shore Excursions

Queen Mary 2 shore excursions are a great way to explore the ports of call on your cruise. There is a wide variety of options, from guided tours and city walks to wine tastings and shopping trips.

These excursions can be booked up to a year in advance, via the My Cunard portal . No matter what you’re interested in, there’s sure to be a Queen Mary II shore excursion that’s perfect for you, from bespoke experiences to accessible tours.

We docked in Cherbourg during our Queen Mary 2 cruise and chose a foodie excursion to Cidrerie Théo Capelle (a cider and Calvados producer) and La Maison du Biscuit in the Normandy countryside. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and both destinations had some lovely products to purchase.

Review: Queen Mary 2

cruise ship restaurant

Reviewed by Noo Saro-Wiwa

What is the line?  Cunard

Name of ship?  Queen Mary II

Passenger occupancy?  2,691

Itinerary?  Southampton, England to New York City, USA

Relive the golden age of stylish slow travel, indulging in five-star treatment and high-end entertainment.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

This is a classic brand of cruise liner known for luxury, high-quality entertainment. Expect  refined dining, sartorial elegance, haute cuisine, fine wine, and high-end entertainment from the playful to the cerebral.

Tell us about the ship in general

Launched in 2004, the Queen Mary 2 is the flagship of Cunard Line and the largest ocean liner ever built. Carrying up to 2,691 passengers, it has the distinction of being the only ocean liner (as opposed to cruise ship – there’s a difference) still in service, and the only transatlantic one at that. Never to be outdone, it has the first planetarium at sea, and its 8,000-volume library is the largest of any cruise vessel. Scattered around its 13 decks are 5,000 commissioned works of art by 128 international artists.

Who is onboard?

Mostly fiftysomething-plus retiree couples or friends traveling in pairs; bon-vivant bucket listers fulfilling lifelong dreams of classic ocean voyaging.

Describe the cabins

We stayed in the penthouse suite, which was three times larger than a regular cabin, its lounge big enough for us to entertain our new passenger friends. They used the guest bathroom while the main bathroom had two showers and a jacuzzi bath. Patio windows opened out onto a large, private balcony, and there were powerful, tripod-mounted binoculars to check out the dolphins.

The Queens Grill and Princess Grill suites come with more compact lounges, marble bathrooms and private balconies. The lowest-tier ‘Stateroom’ cabins are snug with shared balconies, and decorated in bright, fresh colors.

Tell us about the crew

The crew and waitstaff are formal but warm and amenable and would go out of the way to help if requested. A healthy staff-passenger ratio means you’re never waiting long to get assistance. Guests in the penthouse, Princess Grill and Queen Grill suites have 24-hour butler service.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Guests in the superior Princess Grill and Queens Grill suites eat at the Princess Grill and Queens Grill restaurants. Their extensive wine list features excellent vintages that will gratify connoisseurs, and the haute cuisine menu is loaded with the classics, including Dover Sole Meunière and Chateaubriand. The croquette of suckling pig and mango panna cotta were divine standouts. Meanwhile, make sure to get a reservation at specialist restaurant The Steakhouse at The Verandah, which serves cooked-to-order prime cuts sliced by your personal choice of steak knife.

Almost all other passengers dine at the Britannia Restaurant, and there’s also a buffet restaurant serving international cuisine, with options for vegans, vegetarians and dairy dodgers.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The Mareel spa has almost every form of water therapy on offer, from Finnish sauna, to a sizable pool and jacuzzi, and an aqua therapy including a massage pool where neck and back pains are pounded away by forceful water jets or waterfall shower. Reflexology basins are also available, while the relaxation lounge is so spacious you won’t have to compete for lounge chairs.

Activities and entertainment

“The ship is the destination,” says Cunard’s management team, which lays on a cultural program like no other. It runs the gamut from Shakespeare plays at the Royal Court Theatre productions; a planetarium, and an esoteric range of talks from experts: we listened to a former police officer talk about drug mules, and an art expert discussing investment in art, and a professional guitarist deconstructing and performing Jimmy Hendrix’s best riffs. Harpists and a string trio perform in quiet corners each day, while guests wanting something more contemporary can bop to 70s-90s pop classics at the G2 disco after dinner. Once a year, the Queen Mary 2 hosts the incomparable Literature Festival at Sea, bringing in top authors like Bill Bryson and Booker winner Bernardine Evaristo to discuss their work.

Physical activities include croquet on the top deck, table tennis by the swimming pool, darts, swimming, water-painting classes and bridge lessons.

How was the experience for families?

It’s not the most family-centered liner – the few kids onboard were above 12 years old. Nonetheless, children aged 2 to 17 are welcome and can join activity clubs or do sports and gaming in dedicated entertainment areas.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

Southampton to New York City. Seven days and six nights on the wide open sea. 14 days roundtrip.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Cunard is installing Advanced Air Quality Systems (AAQS) throughout its fleet to remove sulfur compounds and particulate matter from the ships’ exhaust fumes.

Anything we missed?

Each day through the loudspeaker, the captain gives insightful nuggets of information about navigation, such as ‘the circle’, which is the practice of navigating a ship along the earth’s curved surface. And don’t miss out on the last-night gala where guests dress up and live out their retro fantasies. The theme on our trip was the Roaring Twenties: ladies dolled up in flapper-girl hats and dresses, doing the Charleston with their tuxedoed partners.

Why is this cruise worth booking?

It’s rare to enjoy such cerebral and high-quality dining, entertainment and service with an old-school flavor and charm. You’ll disembark with the feeling that you’ve not just rested your body and mind but cultivated them too.

A Trip Across Time

"Today we come to the happy task of sending on her way the stateliest ship now in being. It has been the nation’s will that she should be completed, and today we can send her forth no longer a number on the books, but a ship with a name in the world, alive with beauty, energy and strength! May her life among great waters spread friendship among the nations!"

– King George V on the Queen Mary launch

The Queen Mary’s creation and launch was nothing if not extraordinary and her story is rich with history, elegance and grandeur. From the time her construction began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was destined to stand in a class all her own. Despite suffering economic setbacks during the Great Depression, which stalled construction on the ship for several years, Cunard Line spared no expense on building the Queen Mary – which was originally known as job #534.

The Legend Behind The Name

Legend has it that the board of directors at Cunard had decided to name the ship the Queen Victoria, which would have been in keeping with the tradition of Cunard ships having the "ia" suffix (Mauretania, Aquitania and Berengeria). As per protocol, legend states that the Cunard directors went to ask King George his blessing of the ship's proposed name saying, "We have decided to name our new ship after England's greatest Queen," meaning Queen Victoria, the King's Grandmother. Upon which the King is reported to have stated, "My wife (Queen Mary) will be delighted that you are naming the ship after her."

The Maiden Voyage Of The Queen Mary

On May 27, 1936, the Queen Mary departed from Southampton, England embarking on her maiden voyage. She boasted five dining areas and lounges, two cocktail bars and swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a squash court and even a small hospital. The Queen Mary had set a new benchmark in transatlantic travel, which the rich and famous considered as the only civilized way to travel. She quickly seized the hearts and imaginations of the public on both sides of the Atlantic, representing the spirit of an era known for its elegance, class and style.

Since her retirement from the sea as an active liner in 1967, the Queen Mary has never been more popular as an iconic Southern California attraction, hotel, and venue for special events. The ship carried some 2.2 million passengers in peacetime and 810,000 military personnel in the Second World War, but here in Long Beach, an estimated 50 million people have visited. The day the ship was launched in 1934, a well-known English psychic, Lady Mable Fortiscue-Harrison would predict, “The Queen Mary will know her greatest fame and popularity when she never sails another mile or carries another fare-paying passenger.” A compelling insight!

A Timeless Treasure

Her majesty's mechanics, top of the queen, from the height of luxury to wwii.

For three years after her maiden voyage, the Queen Mary was the grandest ocean liner in the world carrying Hollywood celebrities like Bob Hope and Clark Gable, royalty like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and dignitaries like Winston Churchill. During this time she even set a new speed record, which she held for 14 years. But when the Queen Mary docked in New York in September 1939 that would be the last time she would carry civilian passengers for many years.

As World War II started, the Queen Mary's transformation into a troopship had begun. She was painted a camouflaged grey color and stripped of her luxurious amenities. Dubbed the "Grey Ghost" because of her stealth and stark color, the Queen Mary was the largest and fastest troopship to sail, capable of transporting as many as 16,000 troops at 30 knots. After the end of WWII, the Queen Mary began a 10-month retrofitting process, which would return the ship to her original glory. On July 21, 1947, the Queen Mary resumed regular passenger service across the Atlantic Ocean, and continued to do so for nearly two more decades.

The Last Great Cruise

The increasing popularity of air travel helped signal the end of an era for the Queen Mary. By 1965 the entire Cunard fleet was operating at a loss and they decided to retire and sell the legendary Queen Mary. On October 31, 1967, the Queen Mary departed on her final cruise, arriving in Long Beach, California, on December 9, 1967. She has called Southern California her home ever since. The Queen Mary is now a floating Hotel, Attraction and Event & Wedding Venue, home to three world-class restaurants and an icon in Southern California.

The Creative Years

1929 - 1935.

With a desire to replace Mauretania, Aquitania and Berengaria, the Cunard Line begins to discuss plans to build a new pair of super ocean liners. Undettered by lofty goals and the Great Depression, the building of the Queen Mary becomes a ground breaking technological achievement.

Glamour Years

1936 - 1939.

The Seeds Are Planted

At Cunard Line’s annual meeting, Chairman Sir Thomas Royden makes the first official announcement that “the question of new tonnage is one constantly in our minds.” The Cunard Line begins plans to design a new pair of super ocean liners to replace the Mauritania, Aquitania and Berengaria on their North Atlantic route.

Cunard Line announces that John Brown & Company, LTD., of Clydebank, Scotland, had been selected as builder of the new liner.

First keel plate is laid for job #534 (which was eventually named the Queen Mary) at John Brown Shipyard.

The Great Depression Hits

Work begins on the new Southampton dry dock, to be known as the King George V Graving Dock.

December 11

Work halts on Job #534 because of the Great Depression and an inability to secure further bank loans. The hull plating is 80% completed and the ship stands nine stories high.

The King George V Graving Dock is officially opened with King George V and Queen Mary steaming into the dry dock aboard the Royal Yacht, Victoria and Albert. The dock is the largest in the world at the time. It is 1,200 feet long, 135 feet wide at its entrance, 59 feet deep, holds 58 million gallons of water, and can hold any ship up to 100,000 tons.

The effective date for transferring the assets of the Cunard Steamship Company and the White Star Line, to the newly formed Cunard White Star, LTD. Cunard was credited with 62% of the share capital and White Star with 38%.

The North Atlantic Shipping Bill is passed. The British Treasury makes advances of £4,500,000 toward the completion of #534, and authority was to be sought to make an advance not to exceed £5,000,000 for a second liner.

After 28 months, construction resumes on job #534

Rivals Cunard Line and White Star are forced to merge.

September 26

Job #534 is launched, and named the Queen Mary by her Majesty Queen Mary, accompanied by His Majesty King George V. The ship is moved to the nearby fitting out basin.

September 28

Installation of boilers begins around this date.

Installation of engines and almost all of the heavy machinery is completed. Funnels and both masts are in position.

Unprecedented luxury and forward-thinking technology make the Queen Mary popular with British Royalty, Hollywood celebrities and dignitaries alike, raising the bar for luxury travel and ultimately becoming the grandest ocean liner ever built.

The War Years

1939 - 1946, the maiden voyage.

King Edward VIII makes inspection tour of the ship.

The Queen Mary departs John Brown Shipyard, steaming down the Clyde River to Gourock, Scotland. The ship goes aground twice despite prior dredging of the river and her shallow draft. Anchor trials and adjustment of the magnetic compasses are made off Gourock. Twenty of the Queen Mary’s lifeboats were left off the ship to save weight. Since they were manufactured in Gourock, the lifeboats were lifted into their davits upon ship's arrival.

March 24 - 26

Preliminary speed trials are made on the way to Southampton.

March 27 - April 8

Dry docked in King George V Graving Dock.

April 15 - 19

Official speed trials are held in the Irish Sea off the Isle of Arran. British Olympic runner Lord Burghley runs one lap (400 yards) in evening dress around the Promenade Deck in under 60 seconds.

The ship is officially handed over from John Brown Shipyard to Cunard White Star Line at exactly noon.

King Edward VIII, Her Majesty Queen Mary, the young Princess Elizabeth, the Duke and Duchess of York (soon to be King George VI and Queen Elizabeth), the Duke and Duchess of Kent and the Duchess of Gloucester visit the ship. Queen Mary presents her personal standard to the ship. It was displayed at the head of the main staircase on Promenade Deck and is now located on board the Queen Elizabeth 2.

The Queen Mary departs Southampton at 4:33 p.m. on her maiden voyage, arriving in Cherbourg, France at 8:47 p.m. and departing at 12:39 a.m. the following morning.

Arrival at Pier 90 in New York at 4:20 p.m. Crossing time: 5 days, 5 hours and 13 minutes.

August 19 - 31

On her sixth round-trip voyage, the Queen Mary wins the Blue Riband for the fastest North Atlantic crossings from the French Line's Normandie. The Normandie wins the honor back in 1937.

As England and France declare war on Germany, the Queen Mary’s days as a passenger ocean liner appear over. With her record-breaking speed and size, the Queen Mary is retrofitted to serve as a troop ship during WWII. Dubbed, the “Grey Ghost,” the Queen Mary hauled as many as 15,000 men while playing a pivotal role in guiding the allied forces to victory.

On Sept. 26, 1934, at the John Brown & Company shipyard on the banks of the Clyde River in Scotland, Job Number 534, the largest ship the world had ever seen, slid down the launchways into the water as Queen Mary addressed the crowd, speaking into the microphone, "I am happy to name this ship the Queen Mary. I wish success to her and to all who sail her." One thousand and one transatlantic crossings later, the Queen Mary retired in Long Beach, arriving on Dec. 9, 1967. At exactly 12:07 p.m., John Treasure Jones, the Queen Mary's last sailing master, ordered "finished with the engines," signaling the end of one career and the beginning of another. The Queen Mary lives on now as a full-service Long Beach hotel, historical landmark and entertainment venue, giving visitors a unique glimpse into a bygone era when steamships were the most regal way to travel. The Queen Mary - Our Story – Amateur Radio

Radio during the queen mary’s decades at sea.

Like all other vessels of her era, the Queen Mary used maritime MF and HF radio frequencies to communicate with other ships and with shoreside high seas radio stations. Most of the world’s shipping lines contracted with radio companies to provide equipment and skilled radiomen for their ships, the largest being Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Company. Cunard Lines selected the much smaller International Marine Radio Company to provide their ships with radio equipment and operators. IMRC designed and custom-built most of the equipment used on Cunard liners, and employed the radiomen who maintained and operated it. Some of that IMRC-built equipment is still on display in the Wireless Room. IMRC radiomen sailed on every voyage of the Queen Mary, using the radio callsign GBTT, providing communications in support of intership safety, navigation, weather, news reports, ship’s business, crew and passenger messages, and even radio-to-landline telephone calling for those who would pay the rather high prices for that service. Except for the ship-to-shore radiotelephone calls, most other traffic was passed using Morse code radiotelegraphy. In this era, radiotelegraphy was more efficient and reliable, being able to get through noise and signal fading much better than the AM and SSB voice modes. Even into the 1950s and 1960s when Amateur Radio became increasingly popular, IMRC radiomen weren’t much interested in tuning-in and operating on the ham radio frequencies. Indeed, after working a watch of four to six hours of pretty much constantly sending and copying Morse code traffic, the radiomen had little desire to do more of the same on the ham bands on their own time.

Amateur Radio Station GB5QM on the Queen Mary’s Last Great Cruise

Amateur radio first came aboard the Queen Mary for her Last Great Cruise in 1967. Upon learning that the City of Long Beach was considering the purchase of the Queen Mary to serve as a larger-than-life icon of its emerging status as an ‘International City’, Long Beach resident and radio amateur Nate Brightman, K6OSC, fell head-over-heels in love with the idea. He bent every ear and pulled every string he could to convince city leaders to go ahead with the deal. They heard him, and the purchase was made. Then, learning about the emerging plans for a Last Great Cruise to deliver the liner to Long Beach, Brightman hatched a plan to place an amateur radio station aboard the ship to contact and converse with radio amateurs around the world during the Queen Mary’s Last Great Cruise.

Brightman had to overcome many significant impediments to this project. The Cunard Line, US State Department, and the British Government all had to be brought into agreement to permit this event to happen. When all was arranged, Long Beach radio amateur Al Lee, W6KQI, led a team of amateurs as they flew to England, boarded the Queen Mary, installed their radio equipment, and broadcast from the Queen Mary at sea using the British-issued callsign GB5QM during the Last Great Cruise. Every radio amateur around the world who made contact with GB5QM was sent a commemorative ‘QSL’ (confirmation of radio contact) certificate. One of these certificates is still on display in the radio display room.

W6RO Aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach

Nate Brightman’s vision for amateur radio aboard the Queen Mary did not end when she reached her final mooring in Long Beach. He was already at work on a plan to establish a permanent amateur radio station aboard the ship. This proved to be his most daunting undertaking ever, requiring 11 years of persistent negotiating to convince City and ship officials to grant his aspiration. Space was approved on the Sports deck in the structure originally housing the ship’s squash court. This was an ideal location as it provided direct access to the roof overhead for antennas and was in a position to be passed by visiting tourists as they exited the wheelhouse and officer’s quarters exhibits. Construction was funded by the City, and the console was re-created from Brightman’s own photos of the ship’s original Wireless Telecommunications console, formerly located on the Promenade deck portside, photos which he shot during a VIP tour shortly after the ship’s arrival in Long Beach in 1967.

Amateur radio equipment for the Queen Mary’s new Wireless Room was donated by the Swan Radio Company of Oceanside upon Brightman’s request to the company’s founder, Herb Johnson. The equipment and antennas were installed, some of the ship’s original radio equipment was added for display, and the new Wireless Room was opened for operation on April 22, 1979. Frm that date forward, volunteer radio amateurs from the local ham radio club, the Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach, as well as others from all over southern California, have staffed the Wireless Room, making radio contact with hams across the US and around the world and demonstrating ham radio to the ship’s tourists as they pass by. Many of them still use Morse code.

Brightman served as manager of the station from 1979 until his retirement in 2013 – nearly 35 years! The station was re-dedicated as ‘The Nate Brightman Wireless Room’ in 2007 in his honor. W6RO enjoys worldwide fame on the ham radio bands. Amateurs who make an on-air contact with the station are sent the very popular W6RO ‘QSL’ card commemorating their exchange with the Queen Mary.

Be sure to stop by the Wireless Room on your tour of the Queen Mary. And, if you’re lucky enough to encounter one of the volunteer radio amateurs there, enjoy a conversation about all things radio.

Cunard 150,000-ton cruise ship Queen Mary 2  (“QM2” as known affectionately) took cruise industry by storm at her launch back in 2004. And this magnificent cruising lady still turns heads. She’s gracious and old-world fashioned, but considered the only true ocean liner since the Cunard Queen Elizabeth 2 ship debut in 1969. QM2 antiques and artwork reflect this legacy.

Read here all about the QM2 cruise ship onboard experience – the basics (including information on dress code and gratuities), the facilities (passenger staterooms, the Spa & Fitness complex, all dining and entertainment options.

QM2 carries small musical units, high-class bands, duos and solo entertainers performing live music in bars and lounges. Under Oxford University partnership , ship’s enrichment programmes supply specialist lecturers. New York Juilliard School of Music is also QM2 partner and selected jazz musicians sail on transatlantic crossings.

QM2 Planetarium – Illuminations , is the first at sea full-scale planetarium. It has 150 reclining seats, and guest can take virtual rides into outer space and view the stars or other visual spectacles. QM2 full-scale planetarium also functions as grand cinema and lecture hall, even as broadcasting studio.

The Royal Court Theatre is 1,094-seat, presenting West End-style productions, cabaret acts and headline entertainers. RADA – Royal Academy of Dramatic Art supplies actors to perform and lead workshops.

Cunard ConneXions offer enrichment cultural program, seven classrooms and 500-seat auditorium. QM2 guests can attend seminars, lectures and workshops. Classes range from foreign languages to fashion, period furniture to watercolor techniques, film making to British comedy discussions.

QM2 Passengers

QM2 guests are mainly on the older side , as their average age is around 70. Lots of them choose Cunard for the stricter dress code and adherence to tradition that you will not see followed on other lines. During school summer holidays you’ll find more kids onboard on itineraries which are not transatlantic (Caribbean, Norway and Eastern Seaboard).

QM2 Dress Code

Cunard dress code is possibly the most formal and most QM2 guests are happy to oblige. They tend toward casual country club during the day, although European or transatlantic voyage is dressier than one in the Caribbean. A crossing features typically three formal nights – of these some with theme (Masquerade or Black and White), and three informal nights.

QM2 official dress code changes at 6p.m. , and jeans are discouraged throughout ship, other than at Winter Garden bar and Kings Court buffet. QM2 informal nights can feel as deluxe as formal nights on other cruise ships, with women in cocktail dresses and men in sport coats. During formal nights the majority of women wear long gowns; men are in tuxedos or dark suits.

QM2 Gratuities (Tipping Policy)

Queen Mary 2 cruise ship provides personal butler and concierge services . Concierges serve guests in all Grill Accommodations. Queens Grill categories feature also private butler service .

Despite the fact that QM2 features British flair, the U.S. dollar is her onboard currency. Cunard charges $11 per day , per person (for regular passengers), to shipboard accounts; $13 per day is the charge for the ones in the Grills.

15% tip is added automatically to guests’ bills for purchases in QM2 lounges and bars (there’s also space for “extra” gratuity). Canyon Ranch Spa Club treatments include 12.5% tips , but you can always add more.

Queen Mary 2 refurbishment 2016

As in 2015 the Cunard Line celebrated its 175th anniversary, the company also announced that the QM2 ship will undergo a 25 days dry-dock refurbishment. All the works will be done by the Blohm+Voss in Hamburg, Germany. The QM2 refurbishment is scheduled for 2016 (May 27 through June 21).

The ship’s renovation will include most interior spaces, plus a number of new staterooms and amenities, among which:

  • 15 new single cabins for passengers traveling solo and singles
  • 30 new Britannia Club Balcony cabins
  • Britannia Club restaurant will be expanded
  • 10 more kennels for dogs and cats (the ship currently has 12 kennels)

More details on the QM2 refurbishment upgrades will be announced in the coming months.

It’s a simple fact – RMS Queen Mary 2 is the most famous cruise liner, and among the most famous ocean liners ever. Well, probably right after the notorious RMS Titanic. But the QM2 ship is also currently the most British, and one of the not so many “affordably expensive” luxury cruise ships in the world. In our days, the words “Cunard QM2” are associated with stylish luxury at sea, standard, perfection, service, UK – and very rich people.

The very combination “Cunard Queen Mary 2” inspires dreaming – of world-class travel by cruise ship that is synonymous with “the world’s only one”, “life time memories”, “unique experience” – and, of course, “Carnival and Micky Arison” – the largest cruise company and the man who made the QM2 dream come true. The QM2 cruise ship is and will remain in our civilization’s history as “THE ocean liner of the world”, along with Cunard – the company that gave a new meaning to words like “Transatlantic”, “luxury” and “travel”. Enjoy the gourmet taste of your money, feast your eyes with the wonders of our world, and always safe and happy vacations on the amazing Queen Mary 2 liner!

How Big Is the Queen Mary Compared to a Cruise Ship?

By Michael Ferguson

The Queen Mary is an iconic ocean liner that has been sailing the high seas since 1936. It’s a majestic ship, and its size and grandeur make it stand out from the rest. But how big is the Queen Mary compared to a modern cruise ship?

The Queen Mary measures 1,019 feet long and 118 feet wide. She is 181 feet tall from keel to masthead, and weighs in at 82,000 tons.

By comparison, many of today’s modern cruise ships measure over 1,100 feet in length and can weigh upwards of 150,000 tons. That means that the Queen Mary is slightly smaller than many of today’s modern cruise ships.

But size isn’t everything when it comes to comparing the Queen Mary to a modern cruise ship. The Queen Mary was designed with luxury in mind and features amenities like a grand ballroom, a two-level promenade deck, and even an indoor swimming pool. Many of these features can be found on modern cruise ships as well.

The Queen Mary also has its own unique history that sets it apart from other vessels. It was originally designed as a transatlantic passenger liner before it was converted to a troopship during World War II. After the war ended, the vessel returned to civilian service before being retired in 1967.

The Queen Mary 2 Renovation Was Just Revealed In Brooklyn, New York

In just three weeks, the ship underwent $132 million worth of renovations.

Headshot of Kelsey Kloss

We'll be honest: Usually, "Before and After" projects involve some pretty grizzly "before" images. The Queen Mary 2 , on the other hand, was already stunning before it underwent its recent $132 million makeover last month.

The renovation, which was revealed when the ship sailed into its U.S. homeport of Brooklyn this week, includes the addition of 30 more Britannia Club staterooms and 15 single staterooms, expanding the already huge ship to a capacity of 2,961 guests, reports Fox Business . (Some of the more lavish suites available — which, naturally, come complete with spiral staircases — cost about $40,000.)

Over 25 days, the ship received 594,000 square feet of brand new carpets, 4,000 new framed photos were brought on board and the ship's hull was polished with more than 3,900 gallons of paint, according to Cunard, the cruise line that owns the the ship.

The ship's previous palm-clad Winter Garden restaurant was also replaced by the new, more modern Carinthia Lounge.

According to Cunard , the liner has been remastered with more contemporary interior designs than before. Still, it maintains a style that reflects the iconic art-deco movement of the 1930s, during which the original Queen Mary was launched.

In furrier news, the ship also added 10 new kennels for pooches. The revamped pet lodging even comes with lamp posts and fire hydrants "to make dogs feel at home," according to Cunard. Celebrity pets in attendance at the ribbon cutting ceremony included Chloe the Mini Frenchie , Wally the Welsh Corgi and Ella Bean the Dog , reports Travel + Leisure .

Cunard Queen Anne cruise ship arrives in Southampton

Cunard's newest cruise ship has arrived at its home port of Southampton.

The 3,000-capacity luxury Queen Anne was watched by crowds as it sailed in from the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Venice.

It was visible from Gosport and the north coast of the Isle of Wight earlier in the evening.

The vessel - the company's first new cruise ship in 14 years - is due to depart on its maiden voyage to Lisbon on Friday.

The 113,000-tonne ship joins Cunard's fleet of queens - Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria.

Following a 14-day cruise to the Canary Islands, it is due to embark on a voyage around the British Isles with stops including Edinburgh, the Isle of Skye, Belfast and Cobh.

The voyage also includes a naming ceremony at Cunard's "spiritual home" of Liverpool on 3 June.

Cunard took ownership of the ship during a traditional handover ceremony at the Italian shipyard in Venice on 19 April.

Speaking at the ceremony, Katie McAlister, president of Cunard, said: "Not only does she reflect the Cunard distinctive style on the outside, the inside perfectly echoes the brand heritage with reimagined, elegant spaces and designs."

Cunard Queen Anne David Collins Studio

Cunard’s Queen Anne is the latest jewel from the British luxury cruise legacy brand – its first cruise ship in almost 15 years and the 249th historically. At the heart of the grand vessel lies the Britannia Restaurant, a 2,005 sq m space designed by David Collins Studio .

Cunard’s Queen Anne David Collins Studio-designed Britannia Restaurant

Open to all guests and the primary dining venue on board, the Britannia Restaurant is an impressive two-tiered space. London-based David Collins Studio faced the challenging task of visualising a setting that could accommodate 1,086 covers. Lewis Taylor, design director at the studio, notes: ‘The combination of exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and stunning ambience makes Britannia a highlight of Queen Anne’s onboard experience, and open to everyone.’

Overview of Cunard’s Queen Anne Britannia Restaurant. A round table stands against a blue carpet and a golden column

An overarching Greek mythology theme wraps the interiors, which see four dramatic murals by illustrator John Biggs depicting the historic frieze of the Anemoi wind gods, who represent the four seasons. David Collins Studio discovered this symbology during a visit to Cunard’s archive, specifically in the maritime heritage of Cunard’s Queen Mary cruise line.

’We attributed suitable colours to each Greek wind myth to inform the restaurant’s colour palette. Boreas, the north wind, is represented by winter blue; Notus, the south wind, is represented by oranges; Eurus, the east wind, is represented by yellow sunshine and Zephyrus, the west wind, is represented by spring rains/green. The overall design strives to celebrate the movement of the wind and the patterns created on the sea.

Overview of Cunard’s Queen Anne Britannia Restaurant. Three round tables stand against a blue carpet and a golden column

The main space is dominated by two central columns that rise to a double height, adorned with bronze fins and starburst patterns, nodding to a ship’s wheel. Meanwhile, the dining room’s upper-level edges and columns are coated in faceted mirrors with integrated lighting. The carpet follows through on the design concept by presenting a subtle yet kaleidoscopic interpretation of air currents.

For the Britannia Restaurant’s art collection, David Collins Studio worked closely with Double Decker, a London-based curating studio that specialises in tailoring art collections for the hospitality industry. A standout among the hand-picked pieces is the 6m, floor-to-ceiling lighting sculpture by the staircase.

An abstract-looking golden chandelier with rectangle-shaped light-bulbs

Wilhelm Finger and Melita Skamnaki, founders of Double Decker, also highlight a mixed-media artwork by German artist Mevlana Lipp as another favourite. It captures natural details to symbolise human emotions and experiences beyond the limitations of the conscious mind, they explain. ‘We were inspired by Lipp’s abstract work to spotlight the incredible richness of life under the sea, perfectly elevating Britannia’s elegant and timeless interior scheme,’ they add.

An ultra-luxury cruise line wants to attract wealthy Americans with its all-inclusive 'yachts' — see what the new 128-guest ship will be like

  • Ultra-luxury cruise line  Emerald Cruises says its third ocean ship will debut in 2026.
  • The all-inclusive vessel, which Emerald calls a "yacht," would accommodate up to 128 people.
  • Emerald, known for river cruises, has been investing more in its ocean-based business.

Insider Today

Over the last few years, the mass-market cruise industry's larger-than-life mega-ships — outfitted with loud waterparks and more dining options than you could eat in a week — have dominated the spotlight.

But in the ultra-luxury cruise market, it's been the opposite. The smaller and more exclusive the vessel, the better. So much so that Emerald Cruises' next ocean-based ship, launching in 2026, plans to accommodate no more than 128 travelers.

It's a far cry from Royal Caribbean's new 7,600-guest cruise liner . And the price difference is just as steep: almost $250 per night on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas versus more than $720 per night on the upcoming ultra-luxury Emerald Kaia.

"When people think of cruising now, they automatically think of these large ships ," Robert Castro, the vice president of marketing for Scenic Group, Emerald's parent company, told Business Insider. "There's a market for that, but we're in a unique position."

If you’re familiar with river cruises, Emerald might ring a bell.

queen mary luxury cruise ship

The cruise line, owned by Scenic Group, only offered river cruises for its first nine years.

But lately, its biggest growth and investments have been in oceans, not rivers.

In 2022 and 2023, the Switzerland-based company launched its first two ocean cruise ships, which it calls "yachts." Each accommodates a maximum of 100 guests . And so far, they've been hits, with the cruise line experiencing record-high bookings in 2023.

Yes, the ships look like yachts. And yes, they're marketed as such.

But because Emerald's vessels operate group itineraries, they still technically count as cruise ships, albeit really nice ones.

So instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a week to charter a yacht, as is traditional with these high-end vessels , travelers can spend less than $800 a day for a traditional cruise on said yacht-like ship.

While it's not nearly as exclusive, it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper, "bringing the charter yacht experience to reach for people who would never even imagine," Castro said.

Emerald’s upcoming 393-foot-long, 128-guest Kaia would be perfect for fans of small, high-end ships.

The 64-cabin Emerald Kaia would have a larger guest capacity than its two predecessors but would still be tiny compared to most cruise ships, including some of the most luxurious ones.

Regent Seven Seas' new Grandeur can accommodate 746 guests, while Ritz-Carlton says its next ship will sail up to 448 travelers.

Even Four Season's upcoming vessel — with fares up to $350,000 a week — would have a larger guest capacity of up to 222 people. However, it would be almost 290 feet longer than Emerald Kaia.

Like traditional cruise ships, Kaia would have amenities like a spa, two lounges, and three dining options.

The top deck would also have a cabana and bar-lined pool, one of three swimming holes on the ship.

But unlike its mass-market competitors, Kaia would have an open-air marina that would give travelers direct access to the water.

Water platforms are typically only common on yacht-marketed ships, such as Emerald's, Ritz-Carlton's, and, someday, Four Seasons'.

This means guests on the upcoming Kaia could dip in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean seas — as is included in its 2026 and 2027 itineraries — without disembarking the ship.

According to the cruise line, Emerald Kaia's future itineraries include an 11-day sailing from Cyprus to Greece and a 20-day one from Seychelles to Kenya.

Its cheapest itinerary is currently an eight-day roundtrip Seychelles vacation in 2027, starting at $5,055 per person.

As an all-inclusive cruise line, amenities like alcohol, WiFi, and excursions would be included in the base fare. However, unlike all-inclusive competitor Regent Seven Seas , guests must pay for their flights to and from the ship.

To compare, itineraries of the same length on Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur and Ritz-Carlton's Ilma would be $36 cheaper and $120 more expensive, respectively, per day.

But the fares aren't stopping travelers from gravitating toward Emerald. Before it unveiled Kaia, its parent company announced a record number of bookings in January — up 67% compared to its previous record in January 2020.

Castro said about 20% to 35% of its guests are American, typically well-acquainted with luxury travel.

The company's goal has been to increase its number of American customers. So far, it's working and is now "on track to be Emerald's No. 1 market," Castro told BI.

The new vessel is being built at a great time for the cruise line.

Strong demand, compounded by a small fleet of small ships, has led to fewer available cabins for its upcoming summer Mediterranean cruises.

Several of these sailings are now fully reserved. The cheapest remaining fares start at $4,570 per person for an eight-day November sailing from Athens, Greece, to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

It's great news for Emerald as it considers a future with more ocean "yachts." "The sooner we fill the ships, the sooner we start building new ones," Castro said.
