The black crowes, theblackcrowes.com.
Thirty years ago, The Black Crowes, led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, released their de- but album Shake Your Money Maker. The album was, as Rolling Stone described, “a guitar-par- ty cracker that marries Southern R&B crunch and Anglo cock-strutting attitude.” At a time when journalists were mourning the death of rock as cheesy pop and hair metal dominated the charts, The Black Crowes emerged from Atlanta to resuscitate it. The authentically gritty blues-rock album, whose title is an homage to blues legend Elmore James, went double platinum in its first year. Needless to say, in a pre-social media, pre-smart phone world, the quick rise to stardom coupled with a zero fucks attitude led to complete chaos. The Melody Maker crowned them “The most Rock n’ Roll Rock n’ Roll Band in the world” and The Black Crowes didn’t disappoint.
Within their first years, The Black Crowes had toured with rock legends AC/DC, Robert Plant and Aerosmith, and their first Rolling Stone cover story retold a firsthand account of the band notoriously being kicked off the ZZ Top tour for their anti-establishment, anti-corporate rants on stage. Their storied history has the common denominators of any famous band: bad label deals, addiction, band break ups and make ups, epic sold out tours (including one where Jimmy Page joined the band), marriages and divorces, all while prolifically releasing eight studio albums, four live albums and selling over 35 million records. The two things that make and break the band has always been the dueling rockstar brothers. Chris and Rich wrote several hit songs all before the age of 23, while infamously butting heads their entire career. The band called it quits forever in 2013 with each brother vowing to never play or speak again.
February 13, 2020 marks the official 30th anniversary of quintuple platinum album Shake Your Money Maker. On November 11, 2019 radio legend Howard Stern, one of The Black Crowes earliest supporters, shocked fans and rock journalists alike by announcing the reunion of Chris and Rich Robinson, who will tour as The Black Crowes once again, playing the iconic record start to finish.

The Black Crowes Set Off On Their ‘Happiness Bastards’ Tour – Setlist & Dates
The Black Crowes have begun their extensive tour in support of their highly anticipated upcoming album, Happiness Bastards.
Spanning nearly three dozen dates, the tour will kick off with a performance in Nashville in early April and is currently scheduled to culminate on June 9 with an appearance at a festival in Spain.
Happiness Bastards will mark The Black Crowes’ 10th studio album and their first collection of new music in 15 years. Their previous album, Before the Frost … Until the Freeze , showcased live recordings of new material performed in front of a live audience. Since then, they have released an album that featured reimagined renditions of their older tracks and an EP comprised of songs from 1972.
Band leaders Chris and Rich Robinson reunited in 2019, ending a four-year hiatus that saw the brothers estranged from each other. The planned 2020 tour to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker , was postponed due to the pandemic. However, the tour eventually commenced in 2021 , and the band has remained active with additional concert dates and an expanded reissue of their seminal first album.
The Black Crowes’ debut album, Shake Your Money Maker , originally released in 1990, achieved tremendous success and has now been reissued in multi-format sets through UMe/American Recordings. Strengthened by hit singles such as “Jealous Again,” “Twice As Hard,” “She Talks To Angels,” and a cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle,” the album has surpassed five million copies sold.

Chris and Rich Robinson put aside acrimony to reunite for Black Crowes “Shake Your Money Maker Tour’

CLEVELAND, Ohio - After waiting nearly five years to reunite, holding off for another, pandemic-induced time apart did not faze the Black Crowes’ Chris and Rich Robinson.
It may have made things even better, in fact.
“We had time to be brothers for a year and a half, without worrying so much about the band first,” Rich Robinson says by Zoom from Nashville, where he resides. “Chris and I have been talking. We’ve been writing songs. That’s been really cool, just for everything to slow down and not just jump back into being in a band together.
“It’s just been good, I think, for Chris and I to be able to take the time to get ourselves together, and then move forward that way.”
The band is now on the road for its delayed “Shake Your Money Maker Tour,” which stops at Blossom Music Center on Wednesday, Aug. 4.
Older brother and Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson agrees that the time off helped his reconnect with his brother and restored and strengthen their bond. He says that the two were speaking by phone “three or four times a week -- not discussing the family business. Just the kids and stuff like that. My wife talks to Rich about sports cars. Just normal stuff. I think that’s really good. It strengthens Rich and I, and where we are with this (band).”
And this is a point few expected the Robinsons to reach, perhaps ever.
The pair, which started the Black Crowes as Mr. Crowe’s Garden during the mid-80s in Atlanta, have long and very publicly sat in the ranks of rock ‘n’ roll’s list of battling brothers, right up there with the Kinks’ Ray and Dave Davies, Oasis’ Noel and Liam Gallagher, and Phil and Don Everly.
Despite success -- sales of more than 40 million albums, including 1990′s five-times platinum debut “Shake Your Money Maker” -- their acrimonious relationship has been constant and bitter, and was detailed in former drummer Steve Gorman’s revealing 2019 memoir “Hard to Handle: The Life and Death of the Black Crowes.”
Things seemed to come to a permanent end, personally and professionally, when the Crowes stopped in 2015 and Rich issued a statement slamming his brother over financial and band ownership issues. The two spent subsequent years sniping in the press while touring with their own projects, but they eventually reconciled through the efforts of a mutual friend and then a chance meeting while both were in New York with their families.
“A lot of tributaries made their way to the river,” says Chris, 54, acknowledging that he was in a “dark place” personally for a number of years, including the dissolution of his third marriage. “I think it was big for me to...accept responsibility that I was part of a lot of the negativity. This is Rich’s band as equally as it is mine. I’ve told him a few times, ‘Hey, I’m sorry that my anger and negativity of my depression and whatever I was going through bubbled out onto the public stovetop of our lives.’
“It was nice to be able to tell him that.”
With their other projects -- the Chris Robinson Brotherhood and the Magpie Salute -- winding down the Robinsons were amenable to putting the Black Crowes together again, using “Shake Your Money Maker’s” 30th anniversary as a hook. “Rich and I both had the same concerns, the same outlooks and attitudes about what it could be and how it could start to unfold,” Chris recalls. But there some conditions.
That included a Black Crowes nest-cleaning, from band members to management, and re-starting with a clean slate. “There was a strong agenda in the band (previously) to keep Chris and I apart and keep Chris and I fighting,” says Rich, 52, who also toured with Bad Company during 2016. “We just didn’t want to have to deal with any of that negative (stuff), so it had to be this way in order for it to be what we want.”
Chris adds that, “The Black Crowes have always been about Rich and myself, in essence. We have to be like it’s day one, something new -- new people, new energy. I don’t think we want to be triggered by any of the negative parts of our past. We want to go forward, not backwards.”
That changed slightly last year, however. Following the departure of new bassist Tim Lefebvre the Robinsons reached into the Crowes’ past for Sven Pipien, who’s logged multiple tenures with the band since 1997 and was also part of Rich’s Magpie Salute. “Rich and I had decided we didn’t’ want anyone from the past or from our solo groups or anything, but circumstances brought us back around to needing a bass player, and we were like, ‘What about Sven?’ It as a no-brainer,” Chris Robinson says. “We’ve been in each other’s lives since 1984, so we’re happy to have our brother back.”
And, Rich adds, “Having Sven back is really kind of a bridge. There’s something to be said for new guys coming in, who bring their own freshness and enthusiasm, but it’s great to have that element from the past, too. The minute we got in a room and played together it was like, ‘Damn, there it is...’”
That path ahead includes the rescheduled tour, which runs through late September and will visit Europe during 2022, featuring the debut album in its entirety along with a selection of other favorites. The Robinsons also released an anniversary edition of “Shake Your Money Maker” during the spring, and they’ve teamed with the streaming Coda Collection for a series of films, starting with “Brothers of a Feather” from a stripped-down duo show during March of 2020 in San Francisco.
New music appears to be on the horizon as well. The Robinsons estimate they’ve written about 30 songs and they’ve enlisted George Drakoulias, who produced “Shake Your Money Maker” and its follow-up, “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,” to work with them on the new material. That’s on the back burner now that the tour has started, but it’s making both Robinsons feel like the Black Crowes have indeed taken flight again.
“I think we have so much more knowledge and wisdom now,” Chris says. “Our family’s one thing, and then our musical partnership’s really special.” The Black Crowes have been a lot of things, but celebratory hasn’t been one of them for a long time, and I think that’s where we are -- There should be nothing else but, ‘Wow man, the Black Crowes are an American rock ‘n’ roll band, and let’s celebrate this and at our best are one of the best. Let’s celebrate that and just get out there and give it to the people.”
The Black Crowes and Dirty Honey perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls. Tickets start at $29.50. 330-920-8040 or blossommusic.com .

About The Black Crowes
In 1990, when journalists were lamenting the death of rock, as cheesy pop and hair metal dominated the charts, Atlanta’s Black Crowes gave the genre a swift and much needed kick in the ass with Shake Your Money Maker . Fueled by singles “Jealous Again,” “Twice As Hard,” “She Talks To Angels,” and the break-through cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle,” the band immediately took the rock world by storm, topping Rolling Stone ’s “Best New American Band Readers Poll” in late 1990. The Black Crowes went on to release eight studio and four live albums, selling in the tens of millions along the way; they sold out shows around the world; had legendary guitarist Jimmy Page join as a member; got kicked off a tour with ZZ Top for insulting the sponsor; got screwed by bad record deals; got married and divorced, fought amongst themselves and against the rest of the world. In other words, they’ve done everything a legendary rock group should do.

Black Crowes Extend ‘Shake Your Money Maker’ Reunion Tour
The Black Crowes extended their reunion tour with a round of summer 2022 shows. The U.S. trek, celebrating the 30th anniversary of their 1990 debut LP, Shake Your Money Maker , launches June 9 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and wraps Aug. 27 in Miami, Okla.
A band presale begins Feb. 23, with a general sale for most dates starting Feb. 25 at 10AM local time. Further information on the run — which features a performance of the full album, along with "all the hits" — is available at the band’s official site .
Each ticket purchased via Ticketmaster in North America will include a free, exclusive NFT tour poster — the company’s first artist NFT partnership.
The Black Crowes’ Chris and Rich Robinson announced the anniversary tour in late 2019, staging only a handful of acoustic shows in early 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. They eventually kicked off the jaunt in July 2021, playing shows through February 2022.
"Our focus is a real high energy, guitar-driven rock 'n' roll show," Chris Robinson told UCR around the tour’s announcement. "There’s not a lot of that in the world. We don’t have in-ear monitors and digital fucking amps. And amps in boxes on trucks behind the stage. You know what I mean? We’re pushing some air up there. I think that’s the excitement of rock 'n' roll."
Before the newly announced summer dates, they’ll play a trio of May festivals: Stagecoach, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage and the Napa Valley Expo.

“Alright!” shouted a clearly excited Chris Robinson last week as the Black Crowes performed on stage in Chicago. “Friday night at the rock and roll show!”
Following last month’s release of their latest studio album Happiness Bastards , their ninth, the Crowes performed Friday night in Chicago at Aragon Ballroom about halfway through the U.S. leg of their current tour, a lengthy jaunt set to take them abroad next month ahead of fall and winter dates in support of Aerosmith’s rescheduled “Peace Out” North American farewell tour.
“When we saw we were coming back to the Aragon, we were very excited,” said Robinson late, noting the group’s first performance in the picturesque room in almost 25 years. “And we’re very excited to have Glyders opening for us. They’re from this town, check them out,” he continued, lauding the work of the Chicago-based, psychedelic garage rock trio (as a cardboard cutout of Chuck Berry looked on from the venue’s balcony).

“Cheers, everyone!” said bassist Eliza Weber early. Singer/guitarist Joshua Condon and drummer Joe Seger would soon find a groove during standout tracks like “Geneva Strangemod” and “High Time,” both from their 2023 full-length debut Maria’s Hunt.
Since we were first introduced in 1990, the Crowes have tallied a pair of platinum albums and three gold records, with Happiness Bastards , the group’s first studio album of original material in nearly 15 years, a worthy addition to their unique brand of southern-fried rock and roll.

“There’s a little town about 90 miles south of Atlanta called Macon, Georgia,” Robinson explained Friday night in Chicago, spotlighting the group’s roots. “Little Richard is from Macon. And the Allman Brothers Band,” he began, just one day removed from the death of co-founding Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. “But there’s another: the greatest soul singer of all time, Otis Redding,” he continued. “Well, we jumped on that song and it goes like this,” said Robinson, setting up a late take on one of the biggest Black Crowes hits in Redding’s “Hard to Handle.”
While recent tours celebrated their Shake Your Money Maker record, this one makes the case for the new project, with the Black Crowes performing six songs from it over the course of about 95 minutes on stage Friday in Chicago.
As they do on the album too, “Bedside Manners” and “Rats and Clowns,” two of Happiness Bastards ’ more rollicking moments, kicked things off Friday night.

Performing as an 8 piece group, drummer Cully Symington and keyboard player Erik Deutsch were set beside backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Lesley Grant atop a unique two-tiered stage built to resemble stacks upon stacks of vintage amplifiers and audio equipment.
Frontman Chris Robinson, who performed in front of a large mirror, was joined on stage by guitarists Rich Robinson and Nico Bereciartua as well as longtime bassist Sven Pipien. Festive lighting strung over, along and behind the stage flanked the group who performed under a massive “Happiness Bastards” banner hanging from the lighting rig over the stage.
“Good to see you all. Welcome to the ‘Happiness Bastards!’” said Chris early in Friday’s set. “We’ve got some new songs and we got some old ones - like this!” he said, shuffling left before pointing right at Rich on the slide guitar, ultimately bunnyhopping in reverse back to center stage as “Twice As Hard” rang out early in Chicago.

Robinson was in fine form Friday, a rejuvenated frontman shimmying about while delivering a still impressive lead vocal, with the new music cementing a once unthinkable rebirth for the Black Crowes, who’ve continually staked their claim as one of America’s best rock acts since reforming in 2019.
From 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm , “Nebakanezer” was an early highlight in Chicago. The gnarly dual guitar riffwork of “Horsehead,” from 1999’s By Your Side followed, providing one of Friday’s more rewarding one-two punches.

While “Oh Josephine” slowed things down momentarily, “Thorn in my Pride” found the group beginning to roll, with Chris on harmonica as the Crowes delivered an all hands, Stones-like jam to close the cut.
“Everyone say hello to Rich Robinson,” said Chris, gesturing toward his younger brother. With a wave of his right hand, Rich greeted the rapturuous Chicago crowd, soon strumming in the familiar opening licks to “She talks to Angels” on acoustic guitar.

From the new record, “Flesh Wound” followed, quickly proving to be a late high spot. The saccharine-drenched affair was a blast in the live setting, conjuring up the power pop stylings of Cheap Trick as the Black Crowes soared forward in fun fashion.
The brothers Robinson leaned in close, singing into the same mic during “Jealous Again” before closing with “Remedy,” with Chris back on harp as the new “Kindred Friend” wrapped things up in the Windy City.
“What is a band, other than something you dream up?” asked Chris rhetorically on stage in Chicago. “This band started in our mom and dad’s house in the 80s,” he continued, noting the pair’s humble roots. “And that dream will continue on.”

The Black Crowes Kick Off ‘Happiness Bastards’ Tour In Nashville – Photos + Setlist
Following a couple of intimate warm-up shows , the Black Crowes finally kicked off their Happiness Bastards tour in style.
The opening night of the new tour was Tuesday, April 2, at the legendary Grand Ole Opry in Nashville — and there was a little something in the setlist for everyone.
The Black Crowes covered a lot of ground during the 17-song set, including playing several tracks from Happiness Bastards , their first studio album in 15 years: "Bedside Manners," "Rats and Clowns," "Flesh Wound," "Wanting and Waiting," "Cross Your Fingers" and "Wilted Rose."

Before they started "Wilted Rose," Chris Robinson brought out Lainey Wilson to join him onstage; Wilson is also featured on the studio track of "Wilted Rose." After wrapping that up, she stuck around to help out with one more tune, the classic "She Talks to Angels."
Two of the many highlights of the night included a couple of raucous performances of beloved tracks from 1992's The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion , "Morning Song" and "Thorn In My Pride."
Surprisingly, songs from Amorica were nowhere to be found in the setlist, but the Black Crowes did pull out a couple of surprises, including "I Ain't Hiding" from Before the Frost...Until the Freeze and "Kickin' My Heart Around" from By Your Side .
When Rich Robinson joined Chuck Armstrong on Loudwire Nights recently, he told Chuck about "Kickin' My Heart Around," "I think it's one of those that I always forget about. I'm like, 'Oh, this is great to play,' you know what I mean?"

The night wrapped up with an explosive cover of the Velvet Underground 's "White Light/White Heat" — and it's worth noting the Black Crowes looked to David Bowie 's version of the song for their own inspiration.

About the black crowes.
Originally formed by the Robinson brothers, The Black Crowes was found in Georgia in 1984. In 1990s, the group released their debut album entitled “Shake Your Money Maker.” The group was then composed of Chris Robinson as the vocalist, Rich Robinson in guitar, Johnny Colt on bass, Jeff Cease on guitars, and Steve Gorman for drums. The single “Jealous Again” is the first in their debut album, and became a moderate hit.
The band’s cover for “Hard to Handle” originally by Otis Redding made The Black Crowes a multi-platinum success. The song was able to reach the Top Ten. Then by 1991, “She Talks to Angels” became their second top hit. The album “Shake Your Money Maker” sold three million copies.

Chris and Rich Robinson swore never to speak again. But for the Black Crowes, rock heals all wounds

Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes saunters wearily into the bar at the Sunset Marquis — a familiar rock-star crash pad from his days on the road leading one of the great live bands of the 1990s — wearing striped pajama pants and a slightly bedraggled facial expression.
It’s a sweltering evening in early July, and the singer and his wife of two years, Camille Johnson, have just reached Los Angeles after a long drive from Telluride, Colo., where they lived until packing up and splitting a couple days before. Robinson doesn’t ski, but that didn’t keep him from enjoying the mountain town’s natural beauty and its “super-boheme vibe” in the years after the Crowes broke up nearly a decade ago.
“We’d do French cooking, listen to Sidney Bechet, read Russian literature,” he says of his and Johnson’s domestic routine; the other night, they caught a bit of Oliver Stone’s “The Doors” on TV, as Robinson is reminded when he spies Julian Brodsky’s iconic portrait of Jim Morrison on a wall at the hotel. “Worst movie of all time,” he says.
Now the couple have relocated to L.A. — “We’re literally meeting the moving truck tomorrow” — to be closer to the teenage son Robinson shares with his second wife, actor Kate Hudson. Lowering his lanky frame onto a sofa, the frontman exhales deeply and orders a double mezcal margarita.
For Robinson, 54, and with a bushy salt-and-pepper beard, the move is a new beginning that happens to coincide with a look back: A few days after our meeting, he’ll fly to Nashville to launch a tour with the Black Crowes meant to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the group’s hit 1990 debut, “Shake Your Money Maker.” (The tour, due to stop Thursday night at the Forum in Inglewood, was supposed to happen in 2020 but was postponed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.)
The reunion, which has also spun off a deluxe reissue of “Money Maker,” marks Robinson’s reconciliation with his younger brother, guitarist Rich Robinson, with whom Chris formed the band near Atlanta in the mid-1980s — and with whom he fought explosively over money and creative control even as the Crowes went on to sell millions of records and blanket MTV with soulful, hard-hitting Southern rock songs like “Jealous Again,” “Remedy” and their frisky cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle.”
“We were horrible to each other — me probably more than him,” Chris says today of his only sibling. In 2013, after several previous breaks and with the group’s popularity at an all-time low, the Robinsons finally called it quits, issuing a statement in which they “vowed never to play or speak together again.” Yet an unplanned run-in years later in New York, during which Chris realized he had young nephews and nieces he’d never met, led the brothers to reconnect.
“We’ve learned a lot and loved a lot and lost a lot,” says Chris, not too tired from his drive to dole out a little jive philosophy. The singer’s eight years of therapy helped, he adds, as did the brothers’ separate work with jammy side projects including the Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Rich’s Magpie Salute.
The idea to showcase “Shake Your Money Maker” — in concert, the band is playing the LP from front to back — felt like a fresh approach for the once-freewheeling Black Crowes, says Rich, 52, in a phone call from his home in Nashville. “From Day 1, we’ve always run away from whatever record we just finished,” he says, gruffer and more matter-of-fact than his brother. “So for the first time, we’re like, ‘Hey, let’s have some discipline and focus and see what that does for us every night.’”
So far, so good, says the group’s bassist, Sven Pipien, when he checks in this month from the road. “This reset has done wonders,” says Pipien, who’s played on and off with the Crowes since the late ’90s. “There’s always a point three weeks into a tour when everybody’s tired and cranky. But even through this normally harrowing phase, I’m so impressed with everyone’s professionalism.”
With a laugh, the bassist adds: “I say ‘professionalism,’ and that’s definitely one side of it. But it’s also just really fun.”
Eventually certified quintuple-platinum, “Money Maker,” which also features the Top 40 acoustic ballad “She Talks to Angels,” appeared at a transitional moment in rock ’n’ roll, as the music’s epicenter shifted from the glittering Sunset Strip to moody, overcast Seattle. “If the tsunami of grunge had just been a big wave, we would have been responsible for ruining hair metal,” Chris says, grinning as he asks for another margarita. “Now all those guys go on TV and say Nirvana ended their careers.”
Yet the album also caught an in-between quality baked into the Black Crowes, whose members came up through a largely white rock scene in an indelibly Black cultural capital. Chris, whose father was a musician, says the first acts he saw in concert were Slave, Kool & the Gang and the S.O.S. Band — “I was with four or five of my friends, and across the whole amphitheater we could see another group of four or five white kids” — and there’s no denying the R&B influence that shaped the group’s music as readily as the Rolling Stones and the Allman Brothers Band.
“In Atlanta, they’d say, ‘Don’t perpetrate something you ain’t,’” Chris says, explaining his reluctance to describe himself as a soul singer. But soul is undoubtedly what drives his raspy, pleading vocal in tunes like “Twice as Hard,” the LP’s strutting opener, and the churchy “Seeing Things.”
“That’s what was different about it from what was out before,” says George Drakoulias, who produced “Money Maker” and shepherded the Crowes to Rick Rubin’s Def American label. “You had a guy who could sing the phone book. And there was just nothing else in the space that worked its way from the feel up.”
KISS is latest to postpone tour dates after Gene Simmons tests positive for COVID-19
BTS, KISS and Stevie Nicks are among the musical acts that have nixed or postponed tour dates as the very contagious Delta variant spreads.
Sept. 1, 2021
The group leaned further into its love of gospel and R&B on its 1992 follow-up, “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion,” which bumped Kris Kross’ “Totally Krossed Out” from atop the Billboard 200 and which Rich today calls the Black Crowes album he’s proudest of. Playing theaters behind “Companion,” the band was somehow both tender and ferocious, with Rich leading a blistering multiguitar attack while Chris leaped around the stage oozing snake-hipped charisma.
By the early 2000s, though, the Crowes’ songwriting had gotten pretty wobbly; what’s more, the Robinsons’ constant squabbling had demoralized the rest of the band. In 2019, the group’s original drummer, Steve Gorman, published a juicy memoir in which he accused the brothers of creating a violent environment — as in one dressing-room battle in San Antonio involving beer cans and shattered glass — and of squandering opportunities, including a potential studio collaboration with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, with whom the Crowes had recorded a live album at L.A.’s Greek Theatre in 1999.
Asked whether Gorman’s book pained him, Rich replies, “It didn’t really affect me or make me sad. No one really takes Steve that seriously. He was our drummer for a long time, and a long time ago, he was our friend. But he was also the one who kind of schemed the most and was more willing to allow a division between me and Chris.” Rich adds that he remembers Gorman “telling me that the scariest thing to him and some of the people in the band was when Chris and I got along, because then they couldn’t change our minds.” (Gorman declined though a spokesman to respond to Rich’s comments.)
Beyond Pipien, the Black Crowes’ reunion excludes the other players who accompanied the Robinsons in the ’90s and ’00s — a decision Rich says was “necessary” to enable him and Chris to “recognize our triggers and work diligently not to allow them to set us off.”
“The crazy dynamic of bitching in the back of the bus — we just weren’t having it,” Rich adds. (The current lineup is rounded out by guitarist Isaiah Mitchell, keyboardist Joel Robinow, drummer Brian Griffin and backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Leslie Grant.)
That blend of old and new hands is hardly unique to the Crowes on the rock-reunion circuit, which before the pandemic seemed to get more crowded every year as veteran acts sought to replace income from disappearing record sales in the age of digital streaming. Even now, with live shows making a halting comeback amid concerns over the spread of the Delta variant , the latest version of Guns N’ Roses is set to play L.A.’s Banc of California Stadium the same night the Crowes are at the Forum, where fans will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.
“There are a lot of bands that go out, but there’s a lot of people that want to see what these bands are going out to do,” Rich insists. Of Thursday’s double booking, Chris jokes, “Put this in the story: While Axl [Rose] does the intro to ‘November Rain,’ Slash is getting on a helicopter, flying to the Forum and sitting in with us. Then we’re helicoptering him back to the enormodome.”

“We are aware that there might be some pushback, but I’m confident we will be on the right side of history” the Coachella and Stagecoach promoter said Thursday.

Though they’re not performing new stuff at the moment, Chris says he and Rich have written about two dozen songs they hope to record with Drakoulias after the tour wraps at the end of the year. They know rock no longer occupies the center of pop culture; Chris’ son loves “Lil Yachty and all the rappers whose names I can’t pronounce,” the singer says, though lately the kid’s been getting into Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. So is there still a sizable audience for a Black Crowes album?
“I think there is,” says Drakoulias, who’s also worked with the late Tom Petty and on many movie soundtracks. “But who knew there would be an audience the first time around?”
In case there’s not, Chris says he’s been reconsidering his longstanding opposition to licensing the Crowes’ music to advertisers — part of a larger anti-corporate streak that famously got the band bounced from an opening gig on a ZZ Top tour in 1991 after the singer repeatedly mocked the headliners’ sponsorship by Miller beer.
Recently, the Crowes’ manager arranged a conference call with a group of music supervisors to make them aware the band was back in business. Chris jumped on the call at one point and asked if he was the only one “who thinks Ford trucks are twice as hard as a Dodge — or that Dodge trucks are twice as hard as a Chevy.”
The frontman laughs. “I know I’m not gonna get a million bucks out of this s—, but could I maybe get 50 grand?”
