What to Wear on a Boat | Boat Outfits Ideas You’ll Love

When you’re planning a boat trip, the first thing you need to think about is what to wear. There are a variety of different types of boat trips, from leisurely cruises on a pontoon boat to sailing expeditions in the Caribbean.

No matter what type of boat trip you’re taking, there are plenty of outfit options that will make you look and feel your best. And I can tell you from experience, that being comfortable makes the trip ten times more enjoyable. In this post, I’ll take a look at some cute sailing outfits for women and show you how to put together the perfect summer yacht party outfit.

Be sure to also research what you should be eating on a boat trip to ensure you don’t go hungry anywhere along the way.

Casual Boat Ride Outfits

flower t-shirt selection

Casual boat trips are complimented perfectly by comfortable boat ride outfits. And what you’re wearing should certainly be the first thing on your boat trip checklist . Here are some of the essential items of clothing to make up your boat attire.

Casual loose fitting shorts

Comfort comes first when it comes to casual boat rides. And what says comfort more than a pair of loose-fitting shorts. They are perfect for the warmer weather as they’re airy but still allow your legs to catch a tan (if you enjoy that sort of thing).

Peak cap or hat

Having a peak cap or hat with you is essential for keeping the sun off of your face. The last thing you want is to get off the boat only to discover that your face is a brighter shade of red. It also comes in handy to shade your eyes from the sun and the glare on the water, which can get quite intense on sunny days.

If you are not one for wearing shorts, then a pair of boho pants might be a better fit for you. If you’re looking for boat cruise outfit ideas for ladies, then pairing your boho pants with a strappy top will not only be a good look but be incredibly practical at the same time.

The loose-fitting pants will ensure you don’t get too hot when the weather is warm, but there is also enough material to keep you covered from a chilly breeze on the water.

A jumpsuit is the ideal summer boat cruise outfit because it is light and flowy. If you are planning on hopping off the boat for a little swim, then you can simply wear your jumpsuit over your costume, which is my go-to.

If you plan on wearing long pants or shorts, then a t-shirt is an ideal option for those with pale skin or who tend to burn easily. Keeping your shoulders covered goes a long way in protecting your most vulnerable areas from the harsh sun’s rays.

River rain jacket

Weather can change so quickly when you’re on the water, so it’s important to take something to keep you warm. A river rain jacket is ideal as it’s waterproof, so you’re safe from splash, mist, and rain if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Boat Party Outfit

If you have the pleasure of partying on the ocean, then you need a killer yacht party outfit. Luckily, yacht party attire for women is not that hard to come by, but it does need to cover a variety of criteria. While looking good maybe your number one, being comfortable and warm are also both essential.

Here are some of my top recommendations for adding to your yacht outfit ideas.

Two-piece outfit with a maxi skirt

If you’re wondering what to wear to a boat party, then a two-piece outfit might be the way to go. Not only is it a head-turning look, but it is incredibly comfortable and shows just enough skin to make it yacht party appropriate.

The great thing about a mesh dress is that it can be worn over a bikini or swimsuit to take the chill out of the air, and to make you feel slightly more clothed. It’s easy to get in and out of if you are planning on swimming and allows your bikini to dry through your mesh dress.

Summerlong jumpsuit

If you want to look great without showing off too much skin, then a long jumpsuit might just be the female yacht party attire for you. It’s fashionable and flattering on all body types, allowing you to look put together without much thought at all about what you need to wear.

Long summer beach dress

A long dress with strategic cutouts allows you to show off some skin while still keeping it classy. It’s another piece that can be thrown over a bikini when you are finished tanning or swimming, making it ultra-convenient.

Outfit for Sailing

packing clothes for boat trip

If you are going sailing on the open ocean, then you need boat gear to suit your needs. These are some items you could be adding to your sailing outfits to make your experience a whole lot more comfortable. Whether you’re rafting in Glacier National Park or heading out on open waters, these clothing options are sure to come in handy.

A rash guard is something that acts as a swimsuit but prevents you from getting rashes when you are walking around wet for too long the way a swimsuit would cause a rash. This is perfect to go under other clothes and be worn by itself on the warmer days.

Waterproof and windproof pants

Waterproof and windproof pants are an absolute must. As we all know, the weather on the water can turn in a matter of seconds, and you don’t want to be caught in the cold. These pants will protect you from the spray of the water, but also from the icy oceanic breeze while you’re sailing.

Waterproof and windproof jacket

This can be worn over your rash vest to keep you warm when the weather turns. A waterproof and windproof jacket is one of those things that are essential to take with you, whether or not the weather is good when you’re leaving on your sailing expedition. I have never regretted having that extra layer of protection from the cold.

Water shoes

If you go sailing, you’re going to get wet. To avoid getting your new pair of sneakers soaked to the brim by taking water shoes. They won’t get damaged by the salty water and will help you to grip the deck even if there is plenty of water on board.

Life vest

It’s not uncommon in sailing to get swept overboard, but when you do, you want to make sure that you’ll remain bobbing on the surface of the water. The easiest way to do this is to wear a life vest.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When it comes to what you should be wearing on a boat, there are a couple of other questions that people generally ask. As I tend to take boat trips rather regularly I feel that I can help you out if you are wondering any of the following questions.

Should you wear jeans on a boat?

Although jeans are alright for a boat party, they are generally not your best bet. When they get wet they can be very uncomfortable to wear, which means you are likely to take them off at some point or another. If your heart is set on wearing jeans on your next boat ride, I would recommend taking a change of clothes with you just in case you happen to get wet somewhere along the way.

What should I wear on a boat when it’s cold?

it’s best to layer your clothes when the weather is a little on the cold side. This way, when it warms up you can always peel off a couple of layers. It’s important to take a windbreaker with you to fight off the sometimes icy winds that work their way across the water. Anything waterproof is likely to come in handy when you are aboard a boat.

How cold is too cold for boating?

Boating when it is too cold can become a risky ordeal so it’s best to stay on dry land at any temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is because falling into the water can cause hypothermia to set in rather quickly, and that isn’t something anyone wants to have to experience.

Final Thoughts on What to Wear on a Boat Ride

Now that you have a better idea of what to wear on a yacht day trip, you can make your experience a whole lot more comfortable and enjoyable. Pack these items in for a cruise in New Jersey or a yacht party off the coast of Miami and you’ll be styling the whole way.

Whether you’re wondering what to wear on a pontoon boat or simply what to wear boating of any kind, this post will help you find the right clothing items to make up your outfit. Wherever you’re heading off to, enjoy the boat trip!

What to Wear Boating: Suitable Clothing Guide for Any Weather

John Sampson

Are you going on a boating trip with friends this weekend? Heading out onto the lake for the open ocean for some boating fun is a great way to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. The water has a calming effect on our minds, and it’s a great way to unplug from the pressures of society.

So, what will you be wearing during your boat adventure? You need to dress for the occasion, and the right attire helps you enjoy it that much more. What you wear out on the water makes a big difference to the boating experience.

This guide to what to wear boating gives you everything you need to know about choosing the right gear for the right conditions. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!

Assessing Water And Weather Conditions

Before heading out on the water, you need to assess the weather and water conditions. An app like “Windy” can help you predict the weather a day in advance with decent accuracy. You’ll need to dress for the weather and the water when you’re out on the ocean.

If you’re boating around the Gulf or the southern regions of the east and west seaboards, you can expect mild weather. However, there are times when things can turn rough, and you need to know what to expect when you’re out at sea.

The biggest issue out on the water is the wind. The wind will carry that cold air along the surface and into your boat if the water is cold. As a result, you’ll find that it might feel sunny and warm on the shore but absolutely freezing out on the water.

Apps like Windy can give you the water temperature in the area you’re visiting. Make sure you analyze the temperature and dress appropriately. The last thing you want is to start feeling cold when you’re an hour into a three-hour boat trip.

By the end, you’ll feel miserable, and you just can’t wait to get home to a warm shower. By dressing right, you get to enjoy your boating experience without letting the weather get in the way.

Planning Your Trip and Gear

Plan your wardrobe the night before you go out on the boat. You can plan your attire for the day using the information from the weather report.

You’ll need warmer attire if you’re boating in the Northern East coast or Californian waters. The summer may provide days where you can get away with light clothing, but you’ll need to watch the weather on the day you go out.

Suppose you’re boating on inland water sources like lakes, dams, and rivers. In that case, the chances are you’re dealing with calmer waters and more predictable weather patterns. Check the weather report on the news the day before you go to know what to wear out on the water.

How to Drive a Boat

Expect a Soaking

The reality is you’re going out on the water. If you’re at sea, the natural sway of the ocean is bound to kick some water spray over the bow at some point of the trip. If you want to stay dry, we recommend sitting towards the vessel’s stern, away from the spray.

If you’re in the mood for some wet n wild fun, then the bow offers you a great way to cool off with some spray on a hot day. If you’re going out to sea, you have to expect that you’re in for a soaking. So, make sure you take along a spare set of clothes to change if you end up getting wet.

What to Wear Boating in Warm Weather

Boating in warm weather – is there any better way to enjoy life? Life is good when the air is warm, and the sun is out. Here’s what you need to wear on those fine days out on the water.

Light Airy Fabrics

If you’re out on a hot, sunny day with flat water, you can get away with light, airy fabrics for your wardrobe. Wear some boardshorts or light cargo shorts and a vest or a cotton t-shirt.

Cotton is a good choice, but synthetic fabrics are better. Cotton will absorb your sweat and get clingy. Synthetic fabrics wick the moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry. If it’s really warm out, you could get away with wearing a simple vest.

When the sun gets high, it reflects off the water, increasing the temperature out on the ocean or the lake. If there’s no wind, you’ll start feeling the effects of the sun’s UV radiation fast.

A hat is absolutely essential to keep your face out of the sun. The last thing you need is to age ten years overnight from a bad facial sunburn. A hat can be a real lifesaver and prevent those wrinkles from showing up prematurely.

Choose a wide-brim hat for protection over your shoulders. If you’re going to be moving at higher speeds, we suggest wearing a baseball cap to prevent the peak of a sunhat from flapping back in the wind.

Polarized sunglasses cut the glare from the sun coming off the water. A pair of standard lenses in your sunglasses won’t cut the glare as polarized versions do.

However, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars buying the latest Oakley’s. There are plenty of affordable polarized sunglasses available from leading brands.

Look for glasses with a tint in the lens; we recommend going for a blue or yellow tint for the best light enhancement out on the ocean or lake.

As mentioned, the sun reflects off the water. So, the rays can get under your hat while you’re over the water. It’s crucial to go Ham with sunscreen. We recommend using an SPF factor of 50+ for your face and don’t forget to cover your lips.

Apply sunscreen every two to three hours, depending on the conditions. We recommend choosing a reef-friendly sunscreen to reduce your impact on the environment.

Sandals/ Boat Shoes

Wear sandals or boat shoes for your trip. You need footwear to prevent slipping around on the deck when things get wet.

Avoid wearing flip-flops, they don’t have the right support, and you may end up getting an injury because they cause a slip or fall.

Boating Shoes

Remember the Water!

You dehydrate fast when it’s hot out on the water. Remember to take water along with you and stay hydrated. The last thing you need on your trip is heat stroke!

Carry your water in an aluminum water flask, not a plastic bottle. Ocean plastic is a real environmental issue. If a plastic water bottle falls overboard, you’re adding to the problem.

What to Wear Boating in Cold Weather

If you’re out on the water in the winter or colder conditions, you’ll need to dress for the occasion. The Northern Atlantic and Pacific can get chilly in the winter, especially in the morning. Here’s what you need to wear in colder climates.

15 Boat Safety Tips & Safety Checklist to Keep You Safe on the Water

Avoid Cotton

Cotton saturates with sweat and clings to your skin, making you feel cold. We recommend avoiding any cotton clothing. Use synthetic fabrics like Gore-Tex for your underlayers of clothing. These materials keep you dry by wicking away moisture from your skin.

Layering for Warmth

You’ll need to layer for warmth out on the lake or the ocean. Your first layer should be your synthetic t-shirt. Wear a zip-through fleece jacket on top of that and a heavier jacket on top of that if necessary. It may feel warmer on the shore than it is out on the water, so prepare for cooler conditions out at sea.

The wind can cause your fingers to freeze in colder climates. A pair of thermal-lined gloves will save your digits and prevent them from freezing.

Thermal Socks

Your toes and fingers are the most at-risk body parts for heat loss. Keep your feet warm with thermal-lined socks to lock in your body heat.

Woolly Hat/Beanie

The scalp is also responsible for heat loss along with your feet and fingers. Wear a woolly hat or a beanie to keep your head warm and prevent heat loss.

Boat Shoes / Booties

When the water is cold, you don’t want it getting on your toes. Wear hiking boots to prevent water from entering your shoes. A pair of wetsuit booties are also a good idea.

You get a better range of motion and movement in your feet while benefiting from the heat-holding properties of neoprene. Most booties come with rubber treaded soles for grip on the boat deck.

What to Wear Boating in Rough Water

You need the right gear to enjoy the experience when boating in rough water. When you’re out on the flats or in calm offshore waters, you don’t have to worry about much spray getting over the side of the boat. However, when the water turns wild, you’re guaranteed a soaking.

Make sure you take along this kit to keep you dry and prevent the chill of the water from ruining your boating experience.

Rain Poncho

The rain poncho or fisherman’s slicker features design and construction with bright-colored plastic for visibility in rough water conditions. The slicker and hat are suitable for keeping rain and the spray off you when things get wet and wild.

The rain poncho is easy to carry and lightweight. Most of them fold up into carrying bags that are around the size of the palm of your hand. Keep one in your bag at all times and ready for use when you spot an incoming rainstorm.

Sometimes, you need a wetsuit. If the water is cold and the wind is high, a wetsuit helps you stay warm. Wetsuits work by trapping a thin film of water between the neoprene and your skin. Your body heat keeps the water warm, and you don’t feel the cold.

Wetsuits are available in different thicknesses to suit various water conditions. If you’re out in the North Atlantic, you’ll need a 3/2mm suit. In warmer waters, you can get away with a 2/2mm wetsuit.

Surfing wetsuits make the best option as they have good stretch under the armpits and around the groin area. Wetsuits come in different designs. The full suit has long arms and legs, while the spring suit has short arms and legs, or a combination of short legs and long arms or vice versa.

Fullsuits are better for colder waters, while spring suits are ideal for warmer conditions. If you’re going out on a fishing trip in the early morning before sunrise, a wetsuit can provide that added warmth you need when there’s no sun around.

Wetsuit On A Boat

Where Can I Buy the Best Boating Gear?

We recommend picking your boating gear up from an online retailer like Amazon. Amazon has the best range and prices, and they’ll have more selection than the retailer in town. You get fast, free delivery to your door and buyer protection on your order.

Plus, using apps like “Honey,” you can find deep discounts on your gear from leading retailers like Amazon, saving you money. Remember to order your clothing a few weeks before your trip to compensate for any returns.

What Can I Expect to Spend on Boating Gear?

Boating gear isn’t expensive. The only really pricey item is a wetsuit. If you need a full wetsuit, you’ll spend anywhere up to $400 on the suit, depending on the manufacturing brand.

We recommend spending money on sunscreen and sunglasses to get the best quality gear for your boating trip.

In Closing – Don’t Forget the PFD

Finally, you’ll need to remember that you’ll be wearing a personal flotation device for the entire trip, especially at sea. Your clothing should account for wearing the PFD .

So, keep the clothing light and loose around the arms pits to ensure you have a decent range of motion when wearing the PFD.

If you’re going out on the lake, you’re likely going to remove the PFD when you stop the boat. However, children will need to wear their PFD at all times.

What To Wear on a Boat

Ian Fortey

If you’re just getting into boating yourself or you’re planning to visit friends or family on their boat, it’s always a good idea to be familiar with what’s going to be appropriate in terms of clothing. It’s not like you need a formal boating outfit with a pirate hat or anything so involved as that, but there are some clothes better suited to being on a boat than others. I would argue that the most important article of clothing for any boat ride is the proper footwear and, after that, everything else has a lot of wiggle room.

Depending on what kind of boat you’re going to be on and what you’re going to be doing on the boat there are a few ways you can adjust your outfit to make you the most comfortable while still being dressed for the occasion. Let’s take a look at some of the more common reasons for taking a boat trip in the first place, whether that be a fishing trip or a boat part, and go from there.

Choose Your Boat Trip Footwear First

Vans Boat Shoes-Zapato Del Barca

Lots of sites will put this down the list of things to choose from but I’m listing it first and most important. Why? Because no one ever got into an accident on a boat for wearing the wrong shirt. But the wrong shoes can ruin your day.

There’s a reason they make boat shoes or deck shoes and that’s because boats can be slippery. The wood of a boat deck can be too slick sometimes, especially if it’s wet from rain or sea spray. Combine that with the motion of the boat and, if you’re not used to being out on the water, your footing can suffer.

If you can’t get a good pair of boat shoes, or don’t want to invest in new shoes for what might just be a one-time event, look for shoes with a non-slip sole. Try to avoid black rubber because that can scuff and leave big, ugly black marks on the deck. Your host will probably not appreciate it.

A lot of people will lean towards sandals and flip flops for a boat trip because that’s typical footwear for the beach and being around water, but it’s often a bad idea for boats if they’re just cheap ones that don’t have grip. Flip flops especially can leave you slipping all over the deck of a boat in bad conditions.

The other reason I put this first is that, for many people, you want to be able to coordinate an outfit down to the shoes. So if you know what shoes you are going to have to wear to be safe on board, it makes it easier to build the rest of your boating outfit around that.

If you’re attending a yacht party or another formal event, in particular if you’re a woman, you’ll want to resist the urge to wear heels. I’ve seen women do it and sometimes it’s fine and goes off without a hitch but more than once I’ve seen someone wearing heels on a boat take a dive when the boat lurched over a wave. It’s a risk that may not be worth taking.

They do make boat shoes in a number of styles so you can find shoes to suit most tastes and occasions if you’re interested.

Casual Boat Ride Outfits

boat trip clothing

Just heading out for a fun ride, a sort of no big deal event?  There are a few options for this kind of voyage where we’re guessing the weather is probably mild to warm.

Outfits for Women

Since you may be dealing with wind and some unpredictable weather at times, it’s good to not make your outfit too complicated on a boat. Simple stuff works best.

Shorts and a t-shirt is the basic and go to for anyone and it can work great on any type of boat trip. If the weather is a little cooler or breezy, a light jacket or windbreaker is a good option as well as some longer pants. Light colors to stay cool and light materials as well.

If you’re looking at boat-specific clothing you’ll notice a lot of the recommendations for women amount to little more than large sun hats, swimsuits and maybe a sundress. This has a lot to do with boating history and how women were often never even allowed on boats and then, when they were, it was simply as passengers so there was no real effort made to produce outfits for women specifically on boats. Men were piloting and controlling the boats and women did little if anything.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with those casual options for a woman, either. Kaftans, dresses, and wraps or a bathing suit cover up to go with swimsuits make for reasonable and comfortable options for most casual boat rides.

Outfit Ideas for Men

For casual boating trips, shorts and a t-shirt are again a solid option. Light materials like cotton, nylon long sleeves or especially something light and breathable like linen is a great option. You want that air flow to avoid getting too hot under the sun.

For shorts or pants, something cotton is never a bad idea but denim is also a good choice, especially if you’re planning to be moving around but not getting wet at all. Denim is tough and durable and less likely to snag or tear on anything on a boat.

If there is a chance of getting wet, ditch the denim for something lighter and fast drying.

If you plan to be out in the breeze or towards evening, a long jacket or windbreaker is also a good idea in case foul weather rolls in.

Accessories

Man in Hat Fishing

For both men and women, you’ll want to make sure you have three key things in addition to whatever other outfit you choose.

  • Hat . A wide-brimmed hat to protect from intense sun is always a good idea. Remember, nothing is casting much shade out on the water so on a cloudless day you get full exposure. You can also go for a captain’s hat or just a ball cap if that’s more your style, but a wide brimmed hat for fishing or lounging will obviously keep more sun off of your face and the back of your neck as well. If you don’t have the full brim, hit the back of your neck with sunscreen.
  • Sunglasses . For the same reason as above, a good pair of polarized sunglasses can protect your eyes from the sun’s rays. This is doubly important on the water because you have direct sun and also sun that reflects back from the water’s surface, so you have several angles coming at you.
  • Sunscreen. Just like sunglasses, sunscreen is important to protect you from the direct sun as well as the reflected sun. You can burn remarkably fast on a boat as a result of this dual sun exposure so you want to use at least an SPF 30 but something stronger wouldn’t be a bad idea.

What to Wear to a Boat Party

boat trip clothing

If the occasion is a little more formal then you want to spruce things up a bit. This has a range as well, of course. You don’t want to wear a tuxedo to a boat party unless it’s a formal affair. Not that you can’t, but definitely dress for the event.

If we’re not fully formal, and usually boat parties, even yacht parties, don’t get that formal, then find something casual but dignified. Shorts may no longer be the appropriate choice here, but a decent pair of dress pants, khakis and a button down shirt and sport coat or blazer is probably appropriate. If it is formal, then even a suit may be the most appropriate choice unless it’s specifically black tie.

For women, a formal occasion might see something like a cocktail dress or gown being appropriate, but hopefully your host has clarified just how formal this is ahead of time. Otherwise you shouldn’t look out of place in a wrap skirt, wide-legged pants, or whatever outfit you’d feel just as comfortable wearing to a pool party type event.

Men or women, you still need the right shoes for a party. This is again where it’s good to look at the different styles of boat shoes. Some can be very dressy and formal looking. If you still can’t find what looks best for you, just remember you want non-slip soles. That’s the most important thing here.

How to Dress for Fishing on a Boat

boat trip clothing

There is a much wider range of possibilities for fishing on a boat for any number of reasons. To start, fishing trips tend to happen with less concern for the weather. You may be out early morning before the sun, in fog, even in a light rain. Plus, heading out in colder weather is par for the course for many anglers. So you need to dress for the occasion.

Fishing on a boat is an active thing and, as such, it’s good to wear layers to help make this more comfortable. Your base layer when you go fishing should be a lightweight shirt that can help wick away sweat and, if possible, block UV rays. You want light plus breathable here, so maybe a cotton-poly blend, nylon, or even polyester. The reason you don’t want to go full cotton is that if you sweat a lot, or just get wet in general, your shirt will not dry quickly and that can make you uncomfortable.

A long sleeve shirt is a good idea for a second layer. It sounds counterintuitive if you’re fishing on a hot day, but being covered in the sun is essential. It keeps you protected and also slows potential dehydration.  Waterproof clothing is always a good idea to wear on a boat when fishing.

You can buy good quality shirts or light jackets designed for anglers that have great air circulation to keep you cool but also well protected from the elements.

In terms of color, it’s obviously a personal choice but a lot of anglers like to keep things muted and natural with greens, browns, grays and even camo. That said, it’s important to have a life jacket on when you’re in a boat, especially if you’re up and down a lot when fishing.

Nylon fishing pants are a good idea for the same reason a nylon top is. Make sure to get something with a good number of pockets if you need them. You can go for shorts as well but make sure you’re using sunscreen on your legs.

In terms of shoes, this is another mixed bag of options but non-slip soles are still the most important part, even more so than just for casual boating. Your fishing boat is going to get wet inside when you’re fishing and you may be dealing with fish slime as well. So you want to make sure your shoes have a good grip and make it as hard as possible for you to slip and have an accident.

If you have closed shoes, make sure they’re waterproof or they could get uncomfortable and also end up smelling dreadful when you’re done for the day.

Fishing Accessories

boat trip clothing

Like cruising and day trips, you need a good fishing hat , sunglasses and sunscreen for a day of fishing. Make sure you bring water to drink as well. The activity under the sun can dehydrate you faster than you might think.

Fishing gloves are an extra item you may want to consider. They help you keep a good grip when things are wet or slimy but also protect your hands from the sun since they’re going to be exposed for a long while.

Things like hip waders aren’t typically necessary if you’re boat fishing, unless you plan on hopping out of the boat here and there for whatever reason, so it’s not usually something to worry about.

The Bottom Line

Dressing to be on a boat needs to be a mix of practical and comfortable. You want clothes that won’t hold moisture from sweat, rain or the surf. You want boat outfits that are lightweight to allow air flow and prevent sweating and dehydration as much as possible. But you also want protection from UV rays. A linen shirt for men, maxi dresses for men, or other items that have a nautical vibe can be used for boat trips on hot summer days.

Shoes that are no slip are vital on a boat. Beyond that, comfort is something to look for, so light tops, wraps, swimsuits, shorts and shirts are always a good plan. For more formal attire, make sure your shoes are still non-slip and keep focused on balancing what looks good with what is practical for the time and place.

Introduction

Embarking on a boat trip is always a thrilling adventure, whether you’re setting sail on a serene lake, cruising along a picturesque river, or exploring the vast open sea. However, just like any other outdoor activity, choosing the appropriate clothing can greatly enhance your comfort and enjoyment during your boat journey.

When it comes to boat trips, it’s not only about looking stylish but also ensuring that you are dressed appropriately for the elements – be it the sun, wind, or water. Finding the right balance between comfort, functionality, and protection is key. In this article, we’ll explore some essential garments and accessories that will ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable boat trip experience.

From swimwear to protective gear, we’ll cover it all. So, if you’re wondering what to wear on a boat trip, read on to discover how to dress for comfort and style without compromising on safety.

Before we dive into the specifics, it’s important to consider the weather and the type of boat trip you’ll be going on. Are you going on a leisurely fishing trip or a thrilling water sports adventure? The nature of your activity will determine the level of protection and functionality your clothing needs to provide.

Now, let’s start by looking at clothing options that prioritize comfort during your boat trip.

Clothing for Comfort

Comfort should be at the forefront when choosing your boat trip attire. Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics that allow for easy movement and ventilation. Avoid heavy or restrictive clothing that might limit your mobility or cause discomfort during the journey.

Avoid wearing jeans or heavy cotton pants, as they can become heavy and uncomfortable when wet. Instead, opt for quick-drying shorts or lightweight trousers made from moisture-wicking materials like nylon or polyester blends. These fabrics will keep you cool and dry even if you encounter unexpected splashes or rain.

For tops, choose breathable t-shirts or loose-fitting shirts made from moisture-wicking fabrics. Avoid thick, heavy materials that can cling to your body and become uncomfortable when wet. Instead, look for lightweight and fast-drying options.

In cooler conditions, consider layering your clothing to stay comfortable. Lightweight jackets or hoodies made from water-resistant materials can provide an extra layer of warmth and protection against wind and light rain.

It’s also a good idea to pack a spare set of dry clothes in case you get wet or need to change. Having additional clothing options handy will ensure you stay comfortable throughout the journey.

Next, let’s explore the appropriate swimwear for your boat trip.

Swimwear is an essential component of any boat trip, as you’ll likely be tempted to take a dip in the water at some point. Opt for swimwear that provides both comfort and functionality.

If you’re planning on swimming or engaging in water activities, choose swimwear with secure and adjustable straps or drawstrings. This will keep your swimwear in place even during vigorous movements or jumps into the water.

Men can opt for swim trunks or board shorts that offer a comfortable fit and quick-drying properties. Look for options with built-in mesh lining for additional support and breathability.

Women have a variety of swimwear styles to choose from, including one-piece swimsuits, bikinis, or tankinis. Opt for designs that allow for unrestricted movement and provide adequate support. Consider choosing swimwear with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) properties to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.

Regardless of the style you choose, it’s essential to select swimwear that makes you feel comfortable and confident during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve covered swimwear, let’s move on to the next important element of your boat trip attire – footwear.

Choosing the right footwear for your boat trip is crucial for both safety and comfort. The type of footwear you select will depend on the nature of your boat trip and the activities you plan to engage in.

If you’re on a leisurely boat trip or simply relaxing on the deck, opt for comfortable and slip-resistant sandals or boat shoes. Look for options with rubber soles for good grip and traction, ensuring stability on wet surfaces. Sandals with adjustable straps or fasteners will help secure your feet and prevent them from slipping out.

If you’re participating in water sports or engaging in activities that require more foot protection, consider wearing water shoes. Water shoes are designed to provide maximum comfort and protection while allowing water to easily flow in and out. They typically have quick-drying features and a sturdy sole to protect your feet from rocks or other objects in and around the water.

Avoid wearing flip-flops or open-toed sandals, as they may not provide the necessary support and can easily slip off your feet, increasing the risk of injuries.

Remember, the key is to choose footwear that is comfortable, durable, and suitable for the activities you plan to engage in during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve covered swimwear and footwear, let’s move on to another important accessory for boat trips – headwear.

Protecting your head from the sun’s rays is crucial during a boat trip. The combination of reflected sunlight and the absence of shade out on the water can expose your head and face to harmful UV rays. Wearing proper headwear can provide essential sun protection and keep you comfortable throughout your journey.

One of the most popular and effective choices for headwear is a wide-brimmed hat. A hat with a wide brim will provide shade not only for your face but also your neck and ears. Look for hats made from lightweight, breathable materials such as straw, cotton, or nylon. This will allow air to circulate and prevent your head from getting too hot.

For those engaging in water activities or expecting windy conditions, consider a hat with a chin strap or toggle to keep it securely in place. This will prevent your hat from blowing away or falling into the water.

If you prefer a secure fit and added protection, consider wearing a cap or a visor. These options are especially suitable for those involved in water sports, as they provide shade and help keep water out of your eyes.

Remember, it’s essential to select headwear that provides adequate sun protection and fits comfortably throughout your boat trip.

Now that we’ve covered headwear, let’s explore the importance of layering options during your boat trip.

Layering Options

Layering your clothing is essential for boat trips, as it allows you to adjust your outfit according to changing weather conditions. Whether you’re facing a chilly breeze or a sudden temperature drop, having the right layers will ensure your comfort throughout the journey.

Start with a moisture-wicking base layer that helps regulate body temperature and keeps you dry. This could be a lightweight long-sleeved shirt or a breathable thermal top, depending on the expected weather conditions.

Next, add a mid-layer for insulation. A fleece jacket or a lightweight sweater can provide an extra layer of warmth while allowing for easy movement. Look for options that are easy to pack and can be easily removed or tied around your waist if you get too warm.

If you’re facing more extreme weather conditions, it’s a good idea to have a waterproof and windproof outer layer. A waterproof jacket or a windbreaker with sealed seams will help keep you dry and protect you from the elements.

Layering allows you to adjust your clothing to the changing weather and allows you to easily adapt to different temperatures or activities during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve discussed layering options, let’s move on to the importance of protective gear.

Protective Gear

Protective gear is essential for ensuring your safety during a boat trip, especially when engaging in water sports or activities that have inherent risks. Here are some important protective gear items to consider:

Life Jackets: Life jackets are a must-have safety item on any boat trip. Make sure to have enough properly fitted life jackets for every passenger on board. Ensure that they are in good condition, properly fastened, and meet the appropriate safety standards.

Sunscreen: Protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun is crucial, especially when spending extended periods of time on the water. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating and reapply it regularly throughout the day.

Sunglasses: Invest in a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun’s rays and reduce glare on the water. Look for sunglasses with polarized lenses for better visibility and clarity.

First Aid Kit: It’s always wise to have a well-stocked first aid kit on board to handle minor injuries or emergencies. Include essentials like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, bandages, and any necessary personal medications.

Remember, safety should be a top priority during your boat trip. Take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your fellow passengers by using appropriate protective gear.

Now that we’ve covered protective gear, let’s move on to the importance of accessories during a boat trip.

Accessories

Accessories can both enhance your style and provide practical benefits during a boat trip. Here are some essential accessories to consider:

Sunhat: In addition to headwear, a sunhat can provide extra shade and protection for your face and neck. Look for hats with UPF ratings to ensure maximum sun protection.

Sun Protection Clothing: Consider investing in clothing with built-in sun protection, such as UPF shirts and pants. These garments offer added protection against harmful UV rays, especially for areas of your body that may not be covered by sunscreen.

Waterproof Bag: Keep your belongings safe and dry by using a waterproof bag or dry sack. This is particularly important if you’ll be carrying valuable items, electronics, or extra clothes.

Sun Sleeves or Gloves: If you’re worried about sun exposure on your arms or hands, consider wearing sun sleeves or gloves. These accessories provide protection without compromising mobility.

Floatation Devices: If you plan to spend time in the water, inflatable floatation devices like noodles or inner tubes can offer extra buoyancy and support while you relax or swim.

Remember, accessories not only add style but can also provide practical benefits and enhance your overall boat trip experience.

Now that we’ve covered accessories, let’s move on to the importance of choosing the right fabrics for your boat trip attire.

Choosing the Right Fabrics

The choice of fabrics plays a crucial role in ensuring comfort and functionality during your boat trip. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the right fabrics for your attire:

Quick-Drying Materials: Opt for fabrics that dry quickly to prevent discomfort from dampness. Fabrics like nylon, polyester, and blends are known for their quick-drying properties, making them ideal for boat trips.

Moisture-Wicking Fabrics: Look for fabrics that wick away moisture from your skin, keeping you cool and dry. Moisture-wicking fabrics, such as polyester blends or specialized performance fabrics, help to regulate your body temperature and prevent sweat build-up.

Breathable Fabrics: Choose fabrics that allow air circulation to keep you cool in hot weather. Cotton, linen, and lightweight synthetics like rayon are breathable options that help to prevent overheating.

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) Fabrics: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by opting for fabrics with a high UPF rating. These fabrics are specially designed to block the sun’s rays and provide added sun protection.

Durable and Sturdy Fabrics: Select fabrics that can withstand the rigors of a boat trip, including exposure to saltwater, wind, and abrasion. Look for sturdy materials that resist tearing and fading, ensuring longevity and durability.

Considering these factors will help you choose fabrics that offer the right combination of comfort, protection, and performance during your boat trip.

Now that we’ve discussed fabric choices, let’s conclude our comprehensive guide on what to wear on a boat trip.

Choosing the appropriate clothing for a boat trip is essential for ensuring comfort, protection, and enjoyment during your adventure. By considering the specific needs of your trip and the activities you plan to partake in, you can dress in a way that allows you to make the most of your experience.

Prioritize comfort by selecting lightweight and breathable fabrics that allow for ease of movement. Opt for quick-drying materials that will keep you comfortable even if you encounter water during your journey.

Swimwear should be functional and secure, allowing you to enjoy water activities with confidence. Footwear should provide stability and grip, ensuring safety on wet surfaces. Don’t forget to protect your head and face from the sun’s rays with a wide-brimmed hat or a cap with UV protection.

Layering options are crucial for adapting to changing weather conditions, while protective gear such as life jackets, sunscreen, and sunglasses should never be overlooked for ensuring safety during your trip.

Accessories can enhance both style and functionality – consider investing in a sunhat, sun protection clothing, a waterproof bag, and other items that suit your needs. Lastly, choosing the right fabrics is key, with quick-drying, moisture-wicking, breathable, and UPF-rated fabrics being ideal choices.

By carefully selecting your boat trip attire, you can have a comfortable and enjoyable experience, free to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the water and the adventure that lies ahead.

So, gear up with the right clothes and accessories, and get ready to step onto the boat with confidence and style!

What to wear on a boat – whether you’re on a super yacht or a dinghy

by Sylvia | Jul 1, 2021 | 1 comment

Okay, so it’s unlikely that you’ll be on one of those gargantuan billion-dollar super yachts that sail the seas of the world’s glitziest resorts each summer (unless you happen to be mega rich). However, you may be lucky enough to have a boat trip coming up this year – whether you’re staying onboard or taking a day trip. In which case, you’ll definitely need to think about what to wear on a boat.

It’s becoming increasingly popular to hire boats for parties and events. Or, of course, you might just be doing a spot of sightseeing and relaxing. So, how can you make sure your outfit is practical enough to cope with a trip out to sea or down river while still looking stylish?

What to wear on a boat: What to think about?

I’m going to talk about everything from a casual day on the water to a party. But first, let’s look generally at what you need to think about when considering what to wear on a boat.

The weather

Practical shoes

I’ve seen plenty of celebrities tottering around in high heels on yachts, but you’ll definitely want some practical, yet stylish, non-slip footwear for your boat trip.

Your swimsuit

Should you wear heels?

I don’t recommend wearing heels on a boat because of the undulating waves and the slippery surfaces. Plus, most yacht owners don’t like heels to be worn as they damage the deck.

Try sneakers, a boat shoe or sneakers with non-slip soles instead.

I recommend shoes with a back strap. We have had several people who wear slip ones struggle with that first step on to the boat!

Also, check out Rip Skirt Hawaii. They come in many patterns and several lengths. Velcro wrap and they dry quickly when wet. I have 3 and love them!

Setting Sail with Style: Essential Boat Day Attire Tips

1. The Art of Simplicity  While bringing out our most glamorous looks is tempting, let’s keep it grounded on the boat. Think about the winds that might unravel intricate hairstyles or the splashes that could surprise you mid-journey. The simpler, the better. Trust me, you’ll be more relaxed; there’s nothing more enchanting than a carefree soul on a boat!

2. Footwear Fundamentals  On one boat trip, I decided to wear my favorite suede sandals, and let’s say they didn’t remain my favorite for long. Oops! So, here’s a golden rule: always opt for non-slip, waterproof flat sandals. Not only will they keep you steady during those unexpected choppy waters, but they’ll also be safe from any unplanned splashes. And if you’re on a yacht or a similar fancy vessel? Be prepared to go barefoot!

3. Evening Elegance  Ever found yourself on a boat, gazing at a spectacular sunset, only to be interrupted by an unexpected chill? Yep, been there. Always bring along a lightweight jacket or wrap. Trust me, as the sun sets, the temperature can dip quicker than you think, especially with that sea breeze.

4. Daytime Essentials  Nothing dampens a boat day like squinting against the blinding sun or chasing after a hat stolen by the wind. So, grab a snug-fitting hat and some sunglasses. You’ll be grateful for the shade and the added protection against those sneaky UV rays.

5. Sun Protection is Key . One sunny boat day, I learned that water can amplify sunburns. (Hello, unexpected tan lines!) So, always,  always  lather up on that sunscreen. Those UV rays can be sneaky even if you’re lounging in the shade.

6. Be Prepared  If your boat day involves a dip in the water, be an intelligent sailor and bring a change of clothes and a towel. I’ve learned from experience that sitting in a wet outfit is not the most pleasant feeling.

Setting sail should be all about relaxation and fun. So with these tips in your fashion arsenal, you’re ready for a stylish and comfy boat day adventure. Happy sailing!

What To Wear On A Boat Ride

A hat made of polyester material can be your best bet for boating. This fabric does an excellent job at repelling moisture and, therefore, will keep you well protected from the water and sun. The winds at sea are stronger, and the sun is intense, so it’s important that the hat has a string to make sure it doesn’t blow off of your head and that the brim is wide enough to protect your head, neck, and ears from UV rays. You may want to take a look at this article about the top-rated hats for sun protection to help you make the best choice for your needs.

Sun Protection

As I mentioned above, the sun is powerful in the summer, but at sea, you don’t feel the heat as much as you do on land due to the winds and water splashing, which creates a pleasant airflow sensation. Yes, it’s refreshing, but it can be very dangerous. Also, the water reflects on the water, making the sun’s rays even stronger on your skin. In short, you should never go boating or swimming without applying sunscreen cream. Something worth mentioning is that sunscreens tend to leave oily stains on boat seats and also cause damage to the ocean. So it would be best to choose a sunscreen with a high level of sun protection (30, 50, or 100) that is free of oxybenzone.

Footwear choice is extremely important when it comes to boats. Opt for water shoes , boating sandals , or boat shoes . They need to be comfortable, breathable, and constructed with fabric that dries fast. However, no matter the type of footwear you choose, make sure they have a non-marking and anti-slip sole to not mark the deck or, worse, fall over.

Best boat shoes for men

Shorts are fantastic to wear on boat rides, especially in the summer. They keep you aerated and comfortable throughout the trip. You can even swim in your shorts, and no one will be aware of it. Plus, they dry relatively fast, which allows you to go hiking or stroll around towns after the trip. Polyester with SPF 50 is the best material for boat shorts as it dries quickly, provides a high level of sun protection, and repels water.

Long Sleeve T-Shirts

Opt for long sleeve T-shirts to protect your body and arms from the sun. Yes, sunscreen provides good protection against UV rays, but it’s not enough because the sun is much stronger than you may think. So another layer of protection will keep your skin free of burns and safe. Plus, mornings and evenings are pretty cool at sea.

Light Jacket

A light jacket is always good to have to keep you warm on a windy and cool evening. Remember, winds are stronger at sea, and in the evening, they are even stronger. Try to opt for a waterproof and windproof jacket to protect you from the winds and water.

Swimwear on a boat is a must. Period! Unless it doesn’t bother you to go swimming in your underwear or with your clothes on. For the most part, on a boat, you suck up the sun, jump in the water, and explore the underwater world with a snorkel mask on. So bring it with you, and I would even suggest getting another swimwear spare in case you want to change. Oh, and don’t forget your swimsuit cover-up , either. It can help you stay nice and cool under the intense sun.

What To Wear On A Boat Ride In Fall

Get your hands on a rain jacket that protects you from both wind and water and offers high levels of breathability as well. These types of rain jackets can be ideal for autumn boating ease and relaxation.

Rain suits can provide you with top-notch protection from aggressive fall elements. Look for a waterproof suit that’s made out of hard-wearing material such as PVC.

Bibs, sometimes called salopettes or sailing bibs, are pants that come with shoulder straps, and since they are water-resistant, they offer excellent protection against water and winds. It’s one of the best choices for people who go boating in the fall.

A hat made of synthetic material can be your best bet for the fall season. Because synthetic sailing hats are waterproof and repel water exceptionally well instead of socking it, they’ll do a great job at keeping your ears and head warm during your fall boating trips.

Slip-resistant neoprene deck shoes or water shoes can come in handy for autumn boating requirements. Neoprene is a great material for insulation. It can help people keep their toes and feet nice and dry as well. If you want to invest in footwear that’s not slick, you should explore neoprene options that are on hand to you.

What If You Go On A Boat Ride In Cold Weather?

Waterproof and windproof jackets can keep you warm during boat rides. They can fight snow, rain, and mist. Look for jackets with adjustable cuffs that can seal in warmth.

Fishing bibs offer comfort and can safeguard winter boaters from wind, rain, and dampness overall. They offer insulation, too.

Concentrate on polyester, nylon, or polypropylene base layers for thermal wear . These layers wick away moisture and keep the body warm. Merino wool also makes an excellent base layer material. It regulates the temperature of the body and protects it from overheating while keeping it dry.

Wear a windproof thermal face mask cover . It can keep your full face and head warm. Although it can promote warmth, it still offers breathability.

Wear thermal underwear. Thermal wear, in general, can be beneficial for outdoor activities. If you want to trap body heat, thermal underwear can help you.

Wool socks can often offer temperature regulation that’s natural. Since they’re thick, they can help you maintain warm feet and toes for a while. They offer warmth and wick away sweat. They insulate well, too.

Invest in deck boots with non-slip and non-marking soles. Non-slip boots can protect you from deck falls and injuries. Since they have rubber outsoles, they offer excellent grips that can protect you any time you walk on slick surfaces.

Non-marking boots are flat and devoid of cleats. They typically have rubber soles that, unlike leather ones, won’t create deck marks.

Pick deck boots that are water-repellent. They can help you maintain warm, dry feet for hours. Also, go for deck boots that have breathable linings that promote breathability and ample warmth.

Gloves that grip well and that are made out of thermal materials such as neoprene are essential, too. Neoprene gloves consist of breathable materials that dry quickly. They offer strong insulation and can safeguard warmth in times of dampness.

Foul weather gear that promotes dryness, in general, is vital. Look for sailing boots and gloves that are labeled as being ideal for foul weather use.

Accessories You Need On A Boat Ride

Polarized sunglasses.

Wearing Polarized sunglasses is extremely important on a boat ride because the UV rays reflect off the surface of the water and can damage your precious eyes if you don’t wear any. Polarized sunglasses block the glare, helping you to see better and reduce eye strain, not to mention they give you a nice look! So my advice is to never get on board without your sunglasses.

Waterproof Dry Bags

One of the most important accessories when boating is a waterproof dry bag . A dry bag will protect all your belongings from the water and keep all your content safe and dry. Those bags are lightweight by nature, and they come in different sizes to suit your needs. They are easy to use; you just fill out your bag, roll it down, secure it, and you can be sure that not even a drop of water will get inside when you are out on the water.

Yes, you can count on it to make your boat ride hassle-free and enjoyable, as you don’t have to worry about your stuff getting wet.

Life Jacket

A life jacket is a must on a boat; it’s required by the law. If you are underway, you should wear a life vest and preferably one that is comfortable, and that works properly. So never forget your life jacket, as it can save your life!

Life jacket

Before you go on a boat ride, there are certain things you should know. Here are some excellent tips for you to have the best experience on your boat ride.

Bring only what you need. On a boat ride, you don’t want to be cluttered with too many things. Keep it simple, wear simple clothes. Believe it. You’ll have a far more enjoyable boating experience.

Mosquito Repellent: Usually, mosquitos are more active in the early morning or late evening. Hence carrying a small tube is recommended.

Seasickness: The movement of the boat can cause stress on your balance system, which can make you sick. In case you are a first-time traveler, carry these pills or wristbands as a precautionary measure.

Stay hydrated: Drink lots of water, and if you don’t like water, drink something else, apart, of course, from coffee and alcohol, as it dehydrates the body.

Sunscreen: I can not stress enough that you make sure you don’t forget your sunscreen; it will protect your skin while you enjoy your boat trip. There are great products on the market, so make your choice and pack it in your bag.

Final Words!

When boating, consider the weather, the activities you’ll be doing, and the type of boat you’ll be on when selecting your outfit. Opt for comfortable, practical, and weather-appropriate clothing, and don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, sunglasses, and long-sleeve t-shirts. Happy boat ride!

What to Wear on a River Cruise in Europe - Packing List

What to Wear on a River Cruise in Europe

River cruises are more casual than ocean cruises. They’re more about experiencing the culture and sights of Europe and less about having a fun vacation on a big ship (like you would on a Caribbean cruise). When working out how to dress for a European river cruise you’ll need to think about comfort, packability, layering and European culture.

You’ll spend your days sightseeing around the streets of Europe so comfortable but relatively smart but casual clothes are ideal. Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Many of the excursions on European river cruises are walking tours. You’ll also likely visit churches and culturally significant sights that may require covered shoulders and knee length clothes. Pack a light scarf in summer to throw over your shoulders. Avoid short shorts & skirts and opt for capri pants & midi skirts instead.

Make sure you choose items that pack well. You won’t have an iron in your cabin so you’ll need to pack clothes with wrinkle resistant fabrics. A small travel-sized bottle of Downy Wrinkle Release can help with this too. It also gives clothes a quick refresh allowing you to wear items more than once.

Types of European River Cruise Outfits

  • Casual clothes for cruising – Comfortable but smart casual clothing is the go when cruising in Europe. A t-shirt or sleeveless vest with jeans, capris or a skirt is enough.
  • Comfortable shoes –  Comfortable shoes are a must for European travel.
  • Non-formal evening wear – There often isn’t time or a need to change for dinner on a river cruise so don’t feel you have to. We usually prefer to change for dinner, even if that means a quick freshen up and changing from a t-shirt into a nicer top.  Lightweight, chiffon evening tops are great to pack for evenings on cruises. Wear them over jeans or capris. They don’t take up much space but add a little oopmh to your outfit.
  • Formal evening wear – Most European river cruises do not have a formal night. If they do, you’ll find the dress code for river cruises isn’t as strict as for ocean cruises. There’s no need to go over the top on formal night on river cruises in Europe. You can wear black pants and dressier top or a simple black dress and pashmina. No need to bring heels, your sandals will do fine. Pop on a statement necklace and you’re good to go. Men can pack a sport coat if they like but a long sleeved shirt and pants will do.

Dressing for the Season

If you’re traveling outside the peak of summer weather can be quite changeable so clothes you can layer are ideal. Check the long range weather forecast on a site like Accuweather when planning out what to wear on a Viking river cruise to help.

We have noted different quantities for items based on season in our packing list below but here is a quick guide on what to wear on a river cruise in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall:

  • River Cruising in Summer – Summer river cruise attire is pretty easy. Think light summer dresses, capris & vest tops, skirts and blouses. Make sure you pack at least one cardigan in case of chilly nights or the odd cooler day.
  • River Cruising in Spring – Spring in Europe can bring nice weather but it can also be changeable. Layering is key. Bring a couple of cardigans for over dresses and tees. Add in an extra pair of jeans. A light jacket like a denim jacket or utility jacket will also prove useful. April is notoriously wet in Europe so a waterproof jacket would be a good idea.
  • River Cruising in Fall – When packing for river cruise in Europe in the Fall, add in a few warmer layers like long sleeved tees, cardigans, leggings. A light waterproof layer like this is a must. In late Fall, a packable lightweight down jacket like this is also very useful to have in case of cold days.  You’ll also want a pair of closed toe shoes like a comfortable ankle boot for walking in wet weather.
  • River Cruising in Winter – For winter river cruises in Europe, you’ll need a few more warmer layers, hat, gloves, scarf and ankle boots. Add in a packable down jacket and waterproof parka. Leave out the summer dresses and instead pack a few more jeans and jumpers. Merino layers like this are useful for providing extra warmth in cold weather.

Tips on How to Pack for a River Cruise

Know you know what to wear on a scenic river cruise, let’s go over how to pack for a river cruise. When packing for a European river cruise, you need to account for how many travel days you have before and after your cruise, how long your trip to Europe is and how you’ll be getting around once in Europe pre and post-cruise.

Here are a few tips for packing for a river cruise:

  • Pack light for Europe – If you pack light and smart then you’ll be able to fit this packing list into a carry on sized suitcase. Travel with just a carry on sized suitcase if you can manage.
  • Pick a color scheme – It makes it easier to mix & match outfits if you stick to a color scheme. Choose a few base neutrals like black, tan, navy & white for your pants, capris, skirts and outerwear. Add in a pop of co-ordinating color or print with your tops, tees, blouses and dresses. It makes it so much easier to dress! when all your tops go with all your bottom
  • Go for carry on sized luggage – Even if you plan on checking your bag for convenience on travel days, we still recommend using a small cabin sized suitcase for your European river cruise. It’s so much easier to travel in Europe with a smaller suitcase! Space is limited in Europe and a smaller bag is easier for travel on trains in Europe, impossibly small hotel elevators, tiny hotel rooms and the ship’s cabin.
  • Pack with packing cubes – Using packing cubes helps you organize your luggage efficiently, makes it easier to pack & unpack and helps you pack less. Use a large packing cubes for jeans, shorts & outwear, a medium sized packing cube for tops and a small packing cube for underwear. You can get packing cubes here on Amazon.
  • Get a hanging toiletry bag – A hanging toiletry bag is so much easier for cruising. This one by eBags is ideal as it packs flat and is easy to lay across the top of your suitcase contents.
  • Use a lightweight backpack or cross body travel bag for excursions – A lightweight backpack like this is great for excursion days. You can fold it up and pack it away in your luggage when not in use. For city excursions in Europe, a cross body bag works very well. Travel cross body bags like this with built in security to prevent pickpocketing and bag slashing are ideal. You can also get small backpacks like this with built in antitheft technology too.

What to wear sailing: Everything you need to know

  • Toby Heppell
  • April 26, 2023

If you're wondering what to wear sailing then you've come to the right place. We've extensively tested loads of kit so we can bring you the best options

boat trip clothing

Are you are heading out on the water sailing for the first time, or perhaps you’re just curious to see what other wear when sailing, if so, look no further as I bring you my roundup of the absolute must-haves in terms of sailing clothes.

But first thing’s first, not all sailing is alike. I started out racing dinghies throughout my youth and it was not until I was in my late teens and into my 20s that I started racing, and then cruising on yachts or keelboats. The kit required for both of these sports are significantly different and, though you can sail a yacht wearing a wetsuit, it’s not going to do much to keep you warm. Similarly if you step into a dinghy wearing offshore sailing waterproofs (often called foulies) then you’ll be fine, but far from comfortable.

For the purposes of this article I’m going to kook at the clothes you will need to go yacht or keelboat sailing for a day on the water. At Yachting World we have plenty of articles on the best clothing for offshore sailing , the best wetsuits and best clothes to wear for other watersports like best kayak clothing and what to wear paddle boarding . So head over to one of those if that’s what you are after.

Sailing a dinghy on a beach holiday is a common first introduction to sailing, but for many it’s just as likely to be a day trip out on a keelboat, either hired or invited along by some friends who have already fallen in love with sailing and are hoping to pass on some of that joy.

And once you’ve caught the bug it can be hard to know where to start in terms of what clothing you need to buy and what is the most important kit to purchase first.

What to wear sailing

There are several reasons I would put footwear at the top if the list of important clothing items for sailing. Firstly, a good pair of sailing shoes can often be worn ashore too, so it’s not a single-use purchase. Another good reason to buy a pair is that, although sailing on a yacht in trainers is broadly fine, some trainers will leave marks on the deck of a yacht, which can be a bit awkward if you’re leaving unsightly patches on your friend’s new boat. As such, many boat owners have a ‘boat shoes or boots only rule’ when onboard, so you would do well to pick up the best boat shoes you can early.

Decks can often be slippy and for those unused to the motion of a boat at sea, it can be hard enough to keep your footing, so buying a pair of shoes that have good grip will at least help you stay a little more secure.

Given that the main thing you will want out of a pair of boat shoes is grip, then you should focus on what the sole is like first and foremost. Personally, I always favour ‘razor cut’ soles. These tiny little zig-zag grooves – which are thin enough to look like knife cuts – help move water away from the underfoot area and keep the rubber of the sole in contact with the deck. But a word of warning with razor-cut soles, the more you wear them on hard wearing surfaces, such as concrete, the less effective they will become, so it might be worth skipping these if you’re predominantly buying boat shoes for use ashore, with the occasional sailing trip in mind.

The stereotypical boat shoe that probably springs to mind for most is a leather, moccasin style deck shoe. And worry not, these won’t mark you out as a beginner whose only experience of sailing is from the movies, these are actually the shoes that many sailors wear for days out on the water. They can also cut a dash ashore too, so they are probably the best solution for the beginner – and seasoned pro alike.

Tribord Sailing 500 boat shoes

Decathlon is a name that pops up over and again for those wanting to get into many sports. The French sports apparel giant is very hard to beat when it comes to producing decent sports kit at sensible prices.

This classic choice from Decathlon is made of flexible full-grain salt-water resistant leather, with a non-marking siped rubber sole. This sole offers a best of both worlds compromise, not being a true razor-cut, but delivering a great deal of the same grip level in a hard wearing sole for use on land.

There’s a padded leather insole and tongue, but no fabric linings that absorb foot odours.

Zhik Fuze boat shoes

If you’re not keen on the traditional deck shoe look, then Zhik’s Fuze boat shoes are designed as an out-and-out boat shoe but offer more trainer-like styling. Zhik, an Australian company, produces a great deal of sailing kit that is usually developed alongside top international racing sailors and offers great performance – though their equipment does sit at the higher end of the price bracket.

The Fuze deck shoes are very lightweight, flexible and comfortable, with excellent support. A one-way drainage system is incorporated in the sole to let water out but not in. These are my go-to boat shoe if I’m not having a casual day out and their performance in terms of grip and comfort are second to none.

Sailing Jackets and trousers

Although I’ve put footwear at the very top of this list of what to wear sailing for being both relatively affordable and thus an easy first purchase for a new sailor’s kit bag, waterproofs both jacket and trousers are the key items that will keep you warm, dry and comfortable when sailing.

A simple wind and waterproof jacket will be absolutely fine if you are planning on sailing only in the summer months on a very small number of occasions. However, if you are looking to be out on the water with anything approaching regularity then you will want to invest in some proper sailing kit.

There’s no escaping the fact that for a decent set of sailing waterproof clothing, you are going to be spending a fair bit of money. But the cost of a decent sailing jacket and trousers is similar to that of any adventure sport, such as skiing of serious hiking. And these are key items to make you more comfortable and thus enable you to enjoy the experience. Assuming those who are already big-time sailors will be looking elsewhere for the best offshore sailing jackets and trousers, I’ve focussed here on inshore or coastal clothing, which is usually cheaper than true offshore kit and much less bulky.

boat trip clothing

Gill OS3 Coastal Jacket

Gill’s latest lightweight OS3 fabrics use a fundamentally more sustainable material than the long-running industry standard durable water repellant (DWR) coatings. These have been used for decades to improve waterproofing are are what makes the water bead off a new jacket.

However, DWR finishes are typically based on fluoropolymers that have toxic by-products which persist in the environment. Instead, Gill’s OS3 range uses a plant-based finish the performs the same function as the DWR coating.

The OS3 jacket is made of a two-layer fabric with a non-absorbent, quick drying lining. It has a high-visibility hood, adjustable cuffs with PU inner seals, an internal storm guard and is available in men’s and women’s fits.

Gill OS3 coastal trousers

Utilising the same fabric as their jacket these trousers offer strong sustainability credentials. The trousers feature a front zip and internal gusset for wet weather protection the braces can be adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit while the reinforced seat and knees protect against wear and tear.

I’m not, personally a huge fan of this type of braces. They do offer plenty of adjustment, which is a plus, but they can also slip off the shoulder if you are particularly active. If I have the choice I will always pick a trouser with full shoulders for offshore use, or without shoulder straps. But that is mostly a personal preference and plenty of people still like the braces-type trouser.

boat trip clothing

Zhik INS200 Coastal Sailing Jacket

There’s a lot to be said for a choosing the best inshore jacket you can find. It will be lightweight, comfortable to wear, very easy to move around in and is likely to see a lot of use.

Zhik’s INS200 and 300 series are arguably the most carefully designed of all. Both are made of an impressive three-layer fabric with taped seams and have a sculpted fit that minimises excess material.

boat trip clothing

Zhik INS200 Coastal trouser

The matching Zhik INS200 salopettes feature adjustable elastic suspenders with a central back strap for comfort – which also helps stop them slipping off the shoulder.

There’s a waist is elasticated for a secure fit without the need for a tightening system, all seams are taped with critical junctions further reinforced. They also have a laser cut water drainage system to help keep you dry.

Lifejackets and PFDs

It’s absolutely vital that you wear a lifejacket while sailing, particularly if you are new to the sport and don’t yet have great balance onboard. Most boat owners will have rules about wearing them onboard which can vary from ‘must be worn at night and if the wind is above x’ to ‘it’s your personal choice’. But for many people they are an absolute must to wear onboard.

The only reason lifejackets are not at the very top of this list is that many boats have a number of spares for crew to use when they are onboard. But it is something you will want to buy for yourself after a time, both for safety and for your own comfort.

As we found in our best lifejacket test , cheaper models tend to be bulkier and more likely to catch on things as you make your way around the boat. They also typically offer fewer extras. They key thing you need to decide when buying a lifejacket is whether to go for a manual or automatic inflation type. Manual inflation are a lot cheaper – and do not need a new gas canister putting in once they have been inflated. But if you go overboard and are knocked unconscious you clearly wont be able to activate it.

The other point to note is that lifejackets come with different levels of floatation. Most coastal lifejackets are either 150 or 180N.  The higher this number, the more buoyancy is offered. To support a 1Kg weight you need a force of 9.8 Newtons. 1 Newton is equal to 0.225lb. A 150N adult lifejacket will therefore support someone with an in water weight of 15.3Kg or 33.7lbs.

boat trip clothing

Spinlock Deckvest Lite

Spinlock is pretty universally acknowledged as one of the market leaders in lifejackets and this Deckvest Lite is a really great bit of kit. Its stylish – or as stylish as a lifejacket can be – and it fits close to he body and so is less likely to catch on things as you work on deck.

It’s the manual inflation type and comes in a variety of casing colours and is easy to repack when it has been deployed. It fits smaller adult body types well, has a very high visibility bladder and is great for everyday wear.

The over the head style donning can feel a little restrictive for some and the fit is such that it might not suit larger bodies.

boat trip clothing

Crewsaver Crewfit+ 180N pro

This is an excellent lifejacket, leading the way with coastal lifejackets that will take you offshore and into the night with its well positioned strobe light and nicely designed sprayhood.

The thoughtful design is apparent throughout, but perhaps was taken one step too far with the CO2 bottle anti-unscrew seal feature making it a poor choice for frequent flyers but an excellent choice for people who worry about their CO2 bottles coming unscrewed.

Waterproof bags

A waterproof bag is useful for sailing and other watersports too. If you’re just taking layers ashore/to the beach, a cheap dry tube style bag will be fine, albeit not overly durable or practical in use and so not the best waterproof bag option to pick. Also the typical single shoulder strap these have is not comfortable when the bag is laden.

It is arguably a better investment to choose a more robust backpack or duffel style bag with external pockets, more comfort features and better waterproofing. It should last longer, better protect your kit and be more comfortable to carry.

boat trip clothing

Overboard 30lt Pro Sports Backpack

British brand Overboard specialises in waterproof bags and cases with an impressively extensive range and a clear, intuitive website to help you make a suitable choice.

This backpack is a well considered design for dinghy trips ashore and was thus a go-to choice for a week’s vacation, where we used it everyday.

Features I particularly grew to like are the adjustable chest straps and sternum straps which help make it feel like a comfortable hiking backpack, the front mesh for stashing a layer and the side pocket for keeping a water bottle to hand. There is also a small internal pocket for an iPad.

boat trip clothing

Yeti Panga 50lt

The Panga is among a range of Yeti kit we’ve used and abused regularly this season, all of which has come out favourably and as ‘get what you pay for’ items. Your eyes may water when you see the price, but you can be assured not a drop will find its way into this bag.

The robustness and quality of construction shines through. A laminated high density nylon is used for the bag’s construction, which is really hard wearing, but it is the near bullet-proof moulded EVA padded bottom and the size of the patented teeth on the zip which make you instantly realise this is a no-nonsense product.

There are six lashing points, and the handles at each end and buckles feel sturdy enough to haul a boat out with.

When you pull the zip fully closed it’s easy to tell the bag is hermetically sealed, as it becomes a giant cushion – and indeed can make a useful seat, even with just air inside. There are two zipped mesh pockets within.

Sailing gloves

Sailing gloves are a particularly essential bit of kit for two key reasons. Firstly if you are going to spend any time on a boat then you will be handling sheets and lines. Though salty old seadogs might have well-calloused hands and thus be impervious to the rigours of rope handling. For the rest of us, protection is essential to avoid blisters!

A secondary dimension is to keep your hands warm. This is typically less important for the casual sailor as you’ll probably be out in milder weather and for shorter stretches of time, making it less likely you will get cold hands in the first place and more likely that even if you do, you will be able to warm back up again after a short time.

Unless warmth is the main goal – of you’re sailing off-season or overnight – then you’ll typically want a fingerless glove, which allows you to tie / untie knots and generally be able to use your fingers a bit more.

boat trip clothing

Decathlon adult sailing fingerless gloves

Sailing gloves can be disappointingly easy to lose, so keeping a spare pair in the bottom of your kit bag can be a good move.

This pair of fingerless gloves from Decathlon is priced such that keeping a few extras around won’t cost a fortune. And for the beginner sailor it means a pair of gloves that are functional but wont break the bank.

They have plenty of grip, offer good protection, are made of a comfortable stretch fabric and have a Velcro wrist strap.

Despite the competitive price the specification is good enough for ordinary use.

Gill Deckhand Sailing Gloves – Long Finger

The Gill Deckhand gloves have been the go-to glove of our tester – and passionate racer – Rupert Holmes for years now. For a while there was a women’s option available which was a much better fit than the unisex version. The full fingers for three fingers provide warmth, while the fingerless thumb and pointer mean you still have plenty of dexterity in the fingers.

The way the glove is tailored to the curve of the hand makes them easy to wear and easy to grip lines and other control surfaces. They do get a bit soggy to wear when wet and Rupert keeps a few pairs to be able to swap out while the others dry off. They usually him a season and need replacing but he keeps buying the same gloves because they are so comfortable to wear.

It’s worth noting that, although these gloves may only last Rupert a season, he is a serious short-handed and fully crewed racer and will put many miles in over the course of a season.

Of course these are just the basic essentials for any aspiring sailor. And there is plenty more kit you may want to pick up as you do more sailing. Sailing sunglasses are very important to protect your eyes, but any sunglasses will do initially. You may also want a hat for sailing or if you are heading out to see in the winter months you might want to pick up the best thermals that you can to keep you warm.

As you become more experienced then picking up a proper offshore sailing jacket and offshore trousers will be important and you will probably want to ditch the boat shoes in favour of a pair of sailing boots .

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat?

When heading out on a fishing trip, it’s essential to dress appropriately, not only for comfort but also for safety. The right clothing can protect you from the sun’s harmful rays, wind, rain, and even potential accidents. It’s important to consider the weather and climate of the area you’ll be fishing in when choosing your outfit. For warm weather, breathable clothing, such as a swimsuit with a coverup and long-sleeve hoodie for added UV protection, is a great option. In cold weather, layering with quick-drying fabrics and waterproof outerwear is recommended. Comfortable footwear with non-slip soles is also crucial. Finally, don’t forget accessories like sunglasses and hats for sun protection.  [1] [2]

Choosing the right attire can make a world of difference in your comfort and overall experience on the water. So, let’s dive in and explore the best clothing options for your next fishing adventure!  [3] [4]

Why choosing the right clothing for fishing is important

Choosing the right clothing for fishing is essential for a comfortable and safe experience on the water. Wearing breathable fabrics that offer UV protection will keep you cool and shielded from the sun’s harmful rays. Quick-drying materials and waterproof gear will help you stay dry and comfortable, ensuring that your fishing trip isn’t ruined by soggy clothes. Proper footwear with non-slip soles will help you maintain your footing on a wet boat deck, and accessories like sunglasses and hats offer additional sun protection. All in all, choosing the proper attire for fishing will make for a much more enjoyable and productive experience.  [5] [6]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide The risks of not wearing the proper attire

The risks of not wearing the proper attire

As an AI language model, I don’t have personal opinions, but here’s a paragraph related to the topic. Not wearing the right fishing clothes can be risky and uncomfortable. If you don’t have protection from the sun, you can get a severe sunburn, which can be painful and increase your risk of skin cancer. Wearing improper footwear can lead to slipping and sliding on the boat. Not dressing in layers can make you too hot or too cold, reducing your overall comfort and enjoyment of the trip. Wearing unsuitable clothes can just be a nuisance, but it can also put you in danger if you’re not properly prepared for the conditions you’ll encounter.  [7] [8]

Overview of the different types of clothing for fishing on a boat

When it comes to fishing on a boat , there are different types of clothing to consider. First on the list is a long-sleeved shirt made from breathable materials and providing UV protection. Quick-drying pants or shorts made from flexible and comfortable materials are also recommended. Non-slip waterproof footwear and a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection are a must. A jacket, gloves, and sunglasses can also be added for extra protection. When choosing fishing clothes for a boat trip, make sure to consider the weather, type of fishing, and water conditions.  [9] [10]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Considerations When Choosing Fishing Clothes

Considerations When Choosing Fishing Clothes

When choosing fishing clothes, it’s important to consider the weather, type of fishing, and water conditions. If it’s hot and humid, lightweight and moisture-wicking fabrics are a must. If it’s cold, clothing that keeps you warm while still allowing for mobility is crucial. Choosing the right fabric, such as nylon or polyester, is important for quick-drying and stain resistance. Non-slip and waterproof footwear is important for safety, while a wide-brimmed and sun-protective hat can offer protection from the sun. Consider layering for temperature changes and choosing clothing colors that blend in with your surroundings. Above all, choose comfortable clothing that allows for flexibility and ultimate comfort on the water.  [11] [12]

The weather

As a fisherman, the weather can make or break my fishing trip. I always make sure to check the weather forecast to prepare accordingly. If it’s going to be sunny and hot, I’ll make sure to wear light and breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection, and apply plenty of sunscreen. On the other hand, if it’s going to be rainy and windy, I’ll make sure to bring my rain gear and wear waterproof shoes to keep my feet dry. No matter the weather, with the right clothing choices, I’m always prepared to have a successful fishing trip.  [13] [14]

I love fishing and have tried many different types of fishing throughout the years. The type of fishing you choose depends on your personal preference and location. Some of my favorites include deep sea fishing, fly fishing, and ice fishing. Deep sea fishing allows you to catch some of the largest fish out there, while fly fishing requires patience and precision. Ice fishing is unique because you get to drill a hole in the ice and wait for fish to bite. No matter what type of fishing you choose, make sure you have the proper gear and clothing to make the experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.  [15] [16]

The water conditions

When it comes to fishing, the water conditions can make all the difference. As an AI language model, I don’t have personal experiences or feelings, but I can share what the data suggests. Factors such as water temperature, clarity, and depth can affect how fish behave and what techniques are most effective. Understanding the water conditions can help you make better decisions about where and how to fish. Additionally, you may need to adjust your clothing and gear to accommodate different water conditions, such as wearing a waterproof jacket if it’s raining or fishing deeper with weighted lures if the water is murky.  [17] [18]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide The duration of the fishing trip

The duration of the fishing trip

When planning a fishing trip, one aspect to consider is the duration of the excursion. If it’s just a few hours, comfort may not be as big of a concern as it would be for a full day on the water. However, if you’re planning on being out for an extended period of time, it’s important to choose clothing that will keep you comfortable and protected. This may mean investing in breathable fabrics, layered clothing options, and items that will protect you from the elements. It’s important to take into account the time of year and weather conditions, so you can choose clothing that will keep you warm, dry, and protected.  [19] [20]

Clothing Options for Fishing on a Boat

When I go fishing on a boat , comfort and protection are my top priorities. For shirts, I always choose breathable materials like polyester or nylon, which help wick away sweat and keep me dry. Long-sleeved shirts with UV protection are a must to shield me from the sun, as well as lightweight pants or shorts made of quick-drying fabrics that offer protection from water, sun, and pests. I prefer non-slip, waterproof footwear that gives me comfort and support. Wide-brimmed hats with UPF protection and windproof jackets are also essential. Don’t forget your sunglasses, gloves, and socks!  [21] [22]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Shirts

Hey there! When it comes to choosing a shirt for fishing, there are a few things I always keep in mind. I prefer shirts made from breathable materials like polyester or merino wool, which help keep me comfortable and dry. I also look for shirts with long sleeves and a high UPF to protect my skin from the sun’s harmful rays. And of course, I always choose colors that blend in with my fishing environment. Hope these tips help you choose the perfect shirt for your next fishing trip!  [23] [24]

Breathable materials

When it comes to fishing, wearing clothes made from breathable materials is crucial. No one wants to be stuck in sweaty, uncomfortable clothing all day. I always make sure to choose clothing made from fabrics like polyester, nylon, or merino wool, which are designed to wick away sweat and keep you dry. Plus, these fabrics won’t stick to your skin, no matter how hot it gets outside. So, when selecting your fishing clothes, make sure to prioritize breathability for maximum comfort on the water.  [25] [26]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Long-sleeved vs. short-sleeved

Long-sleeved vs. short-sleeved

When it comes to choosing the right shirt for fishing, you’ll need to consider whether you want long-sleeved or short-sleeved. Long-sleeved shirts offer more protection from the sun, but short-sleeved shirts are great for warmer days when you don’t want to overheat. At the end of the day, it really depends on your personal preference and the weather conditions you’ll be facing on your fishing trip. So, think about what will keep you comfortable and protected, and make your decision accordingly.  [27] [28]

UV protection

As someone who loves to spend time on the water, I always make sure to wear clothing that provides UV protection. Did you know that there are clothing manufacturers that acquire a rating called UPF which proves their garments block ultraviolet light at certain levels? It’s important to choose shirts and other garments that block UV light to protect your skin from long-term damage. When picking out clothing for a day on the boat, make sure to prioritize protection along with style and comfort.  [29] [30]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Pants/Shorts

Pants/Shorts

When it comes to fishing, choosing the right pants or shorts is crucial. Quick-drying fabrics are important in case you get splashed, and comfort and flexibility are key for all-day wear. Look for pants or shorts with protection from the sun and water, and plenty of pockets for all your gear. Don’t forget about footwear, too – shoes with non-slip soles and waterproof capabilities are a safe bet. Overall, choosing the right fishing clothes can make all the difference on your next fishing trip.  [31] [32]

Quick-drying fabrics

I always try to choose quick-drying fabrics when I’m getting ready for a fishing trip. That’s because I know that I’m going to be sweating a lot and facing water and other elements. Quick-drying fabrics like nylon are great because they keep me dry and comfortable. I don’t have to worry about staying wet if I get splashed or if I fall in the water. Plus, they’re lightweight and allow for a lot of flexibility and freedom of movement. Overall, quick-drying fabrics are a must-have for any fishing outfit.  [33] [34]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Comfort and flexibility

Comfort and flexibility

For me, comfort and flexibility are two key factors when it comes to choosing my fishing clothes. I want to be able to move around easily and not be weighed down by heavy or stiff clothing. That’s why I always opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics that allow me to stay cool and comfortable even on the hottest days. Plus, I like to have a bit of stretch in my clothes, so I can easily bend down to tie on a new lure or cast my line without feeling restricted.  [35] [36]

Protection from sun and water

When I’m out on the boat fishing , one of the most important things on my mind is protection from the sun and water. It’s easy to forget and get a nasty sunburn or end up soaked and miserable. That’s why I always make sure to wear clothing with UPF protection and waterproof materials. A lightweight long sleeve hoodie or coverup over my swimsuit is perfect for sunny days and helps keep me cool and protected from harmful UV rays. And on rainy days, having waterproof outer layers like GORE-TEX jackets keeps me dry and focused on catching fish.  [37] [38]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Footwear

When fishing on a boat, I know that footwear is important for both comfort and safety. Personally, I look for shoes that have a wide heel for balance, good cushioning and arch support for those long days, mesh material for breathability and quick drying, and a non-slip sole for traction. I highly recommend the HUK Attack shoe for its all-around features that make it perfect for fishing. But ultimately, it’s important to find a shoe that suits your own needs and preferences on the water.  [39] [40]

Non-slip soles

I always make sure that my fishing shoes have non-slip soles. This is especially important when fishing on a boat, as the deck can get wet and slippery. A good pair of shoes with non-slip soles will provide me with the grip and stability that I need to move around the boat safely. I usually opt for athletic shoes or specialized boat and deck shoes that feature this type of sole, but it’s important to make sure that any shoe you choose has proper traction to prevent slips and falls.  [41] [42]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Waterproof

I always make sure to wear waterproof shoes when I go fishing, especially when it’s raining or there’s a chance of getting wet. Waterproof shoes are essential for keeping my feet dry and comfortable while out on the water. They also help prevent slips and falls, which is important for my safety. When shopping for fishing footwear, I always look for high-quality boots or shoes with waterproof properties to ensure my feet stay dry and protected.  [43] [44]

Comfort and support

When I’m fishing, I know how important it is to be comfortable and supported in my clothing choices. That’s why I always make sure to wear high-quality fishing apparel that provides both. From shoes with good cushioning and arch support to shirts that wick away sweat and keep me dry, I prioritize comfort and support when choosing what to wear fishing. This helps me stay focused on the fishing itself and enjoy my time on the water even more.  [45] [46]

What to Wear Fishing on a Boat: A Comprehensive Guide Hats

As someone who loves to fish on a boat, I always make sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect myself from the sun. Not only does it shield my face and neck from harmful UV rays, but it also keeps me cool and comfortable. I prefer a hat that is both breathable and lightweight, so I can fish all day without feeling weighed down. Whether you go for a visor or a baseball cap, make sure to choose a hat that covers the areas most prone to sun damage. Trust me, your skin will thank you later!  [47] [48]

I have been able to wear it to work and feel super comfortable. The fabric is sturdy, and it has a little of a wrinkled look so it is great to travel with. I would recommend this skirt to anyone who is looking for some flare in their wardrobe but doesn't want to break the bank. I got this skirt in red and plan on getting it in a few more colors. Also, it was true to size." — Christina

a model wearing the black long-sleeved wrap top in three ways: off the shoulder, tied in the front with a square neck, and tied in the back with a V-neck in front

Hackwith Design House is a woman-owned small business that creates made-to-order apparel. This shirt can be worn as a V-neck, off-the-shoulder, boatneck, V-back, and even open as a jacket. And the color is simple, which means it can be paired well with many different bottoms.

BuzzFeed Shopping Editor  Chelsea Stuart  says: "I have this shirt and I *love* it.  All credit for its discovery goes to TikToker  @jennifer.bianca  who I happened to stumble across on my FYP. It checks all my boxes: black, comfortable, versatile, and durable. My initial worry was that I wouldn't feel secure in it (I have a 38DDD chest and most wrap tops/dresses I've tried haven't stayed where they're supposed to), but I haven't had an issue with this! I've worn it tied in the front giving me a square neck (like the middle picture) and tied in the back giving me a V-neck up front (just like the photo on the right) — both were super comfortable, and I didn't have to adjust myself at all. As someone whose weight fluctuates, I also appreciate that this piece can handle pounds gained and lost. The fabric is medium weight, so I'll be wearing it season to season, and there's just enough elasticity in the arms that if you roll up your sleeves, they won't fall back down. All that is to say trust that I will be buying additional colors!"

Get it from Hackwith Design House for $145  (available in sizes XS–4X and in five colors).

31. A stretchy  mid-length pencil skirt  reviewers confirm is as comfortable as wearing leggings but looks so much nicer. If you travel a lot for work, or just need a nice bottom option for dinner, this will be your go-to.

A customer review photo of them wearing the skirt in green with booties and a white T-shirt

Promising reviews:  "I really like this skirt. Great quality…I ordered it twice just because I wear it so much for work and travel. It fits true to size. The color, material, fit, and style did not disappoint. I highly recommend!" — Dione

"Love, love, love this skirt!! I would normally wear a medium, but after reading some reviews about how small it ran, I ordered one size up. When I took it out of the bag today and looked at the waist, it looked so small I thought, NO WAY! But, the fabric is so soft and has so much give that it was fine. In minutes, I felt like I was walking around in my PJs! Yes, it’s THAT comfortable! From the side the fit is very close; it looks like I’m wearing leggings. If you think this would feel or look too tight for you, I would try two sizes up rather than one, although the thigh and leg area is the part of the skirt that fits the closest. But, I’m fine with it, and my husband said I look 'great' in it — sleek and well-dressed but not too sexy which was what I was going for since I’ll be wearing it to church! Came back online just now to order more in different colors but decided to write this review first!" — Lisa S.

Get it from Amazon for $33.99 (available in sizes XS–XXL and in seven colors).

32. A rib-knit ruched crop top that has a drawstring down the middle that's adjustable, meaning you can customize it to show as much (or as little) skin as you want. Combine this feature with the soft fabric and trendy style, and you've got yourself a winner of a top.

a reviewer wearing the crop top in light blue

Promising reviews:  "I bought this top for my trip to Paris, and it fit perfectly! The material is very soft and comfortable. Would definitely recommend." — Manee Her

"I love this shirt. You can wear it at several different lengths. It is a soft stretchy material. Not see-through at all. Very comfortable for wearing all day and night. Pair this with a skirt or cute pair of jeans!" — Katrina

Get it from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in sizes XS–3XL and in six colors).
