MSC Divina 's 14-night Western Caribbean itinerary varies slightly from sailing to sailing, but one sample schedule goes as follows: After departing from Miami, the first stop is Nassau, Bahamas, where guests might like to kick off their two-week vacation with a VIP cabana experience on Blue Lagoon Island. The following day, Divina sails to the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a private destination with beachside spa treatments, snorkeling and diving opportunities, and an outdoor food court. The ship then returns to Miami for a day before continuing to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Many people would agree with me that a Caribbean cruise is the perfect antidote to the winter doldrums and work stress, plus a wonderful way to reconnect with friends and loved ones. The ship takes care of everything -- transportation, accommodation, meals and entertainment – so you can skip much of the daily planning drama and simply enjoy your vacation and travel companions. Every day you wake up to warm weather and sunny skies (well, most of the time) and a new destination promising white sand beaches, fun activities and memories to be made.

The biggest decision you have to make is between a pina colada and a strawberry daiquiri.

Why cruise to the Caribbean?

Sun, sand and sea are what most travelers want when they book a cruise to the Caribbean. If you want to trade chilly weather at home for warm, sunny days spent relaxing on a beach or swimming in clear blue waters, a Caribbean cruise is an ideal vacation. Unlike a resort stay, you can sample multiple beaches in various destinations, as well as the pool life on board the ship.

Many people choose Caribbean cruises because they're affordable getaways to tropical destinations. The sailings depart from several U.S. home ports — from Galveston, Texas, to Boston — so many Americans can drive to their departure ports and avoid paying for airfare.

Plus, cruise ships can change course to avoid bad weather, such as hurricanes, so you can salvage your beach vacation when a storm is headed toward a particular island by cruising to a different one. If you booked a land-based stay, you'd be forced to cancel — or hunker down and wait for the rain and winds to pass.

When do cruises go to the Caribbean?

Caribbean cruises sail year-round, so you can plan your trip for the winter holidays, spring break or summer vacation. However, more ships sail this region of the world in the winter, when other destinations (such as the Mediterranean, Baltic, Canada/New England and Bermuda) are too chilly for vacations at sea.

The luxury and upscale cruise lines especially tend to only base ships in the Caribbean during the winter because their fleets are too small to base a ship there year-round — and their passengers want to explore bucket list destinations around the world.

Best Caribbean itineraries

Cruise lines divide the Caribbean into three regions: Eastern, Western and Southern. Itineraries tend to concentrate on one area, but longer itineraries may include islands in two or all of the regions, as well as ports in the Bahamas and Florida.

Which itinerary is best for you will depend primarily on which port you want to depart from and how long a vacation you can take. Once you see the options that fit your parameters, you'll want to look at how many port stops versus sea days an itinerary has and which specific islands you'll visit.

The best Caribbean itineraries for first-time cruisers are often the seven-night Eastern or seven-night Western Caribbean cruises out of Florida home ports, such as Miami , Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral (near Orlando).

Western Caribbean

You'll find two main types of Western Caribbean cruises, and both are fabulous introductions to Caribbean culture and attractions. The classic Western Caribbean itinerary visits Mexico (typically Cozumel or Costa Maya), Jamaica, Grand Cayman and a cruise line's private island, which is typically in the Bahamas.

However, some ships sail a Western Caribbean itinerary that's more focused on Central America, with stops in Mexico, Belize and Honduras. These itineraries are great for travelers who are interested in Mayan or Mexican culture in addition to beaches and water sports.

Western Caribbean itineraries are typically a week, but can be as short as four days (with just one stop in Mexico) or as long as 12 days (though these might include stops in the Bahamas, too). You can find departures from ports all along the U.S. East Coast, Gulf Coast and Florida.

Eastern Caribbean

Another popular itinerary for first-timers is the Eastern Caribbean, with visits to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic and/or San Juan, Puerto Rico. Private island and Bahamas stops are common. Longer cruises or smaller-ship itineraries might stop elsewhere in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, Antigua or St. Kitts.

These itineraries are slightly more targeted toward beach time and water sports, with fewer options for historical or cultural attractions than their Western Caribbean counterparts.

As with the Western Caribbean, seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruises are the most common itinerary length. The shortest options are four nights, typically visiting only Grand Turk or Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The longest, around 10 to 12 nights, will often include Southern Caribbean ports or start from more northerly home ports.

You can find departures from ports as far west as Galveston and as far north as the New York area, but the majority of true Eastern Caribbean cruises set sail from Florida or Puerto Rico.

Southern Caribbean

Southern Caribbean cruises tend to attract luxury travelers and repeat cruisers. That's because these islands are farther from U.S. shores, meaning you'll need to fly to an island to catch your cruise ship or need more than a week's vacation to get from Florida all the way south to ports in Aruba or St. Lucia and back. The islands themselves tend to be more exclusive, with fewer ships visiting on any given day.

Common destinations on Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries include Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique and Grenada. You'll find everything from gorgeous beaches and diving destinations to lush rainforests and flowing waterfalls.

The shortest Southern Caribbean cruises are five or six days and leave from places such as Barbados, San Juan and St. Thomas. You can find weeklong sailings from Florida, but more commonly, they're eight nights or longer.

The Bahamas and Florida

Yes, I know that the Bahamas is technically located in the Atlantic, but it's an easy mistake to think the balmy islands are found in the Caribbean. Besides, many cruises add stops in the Bahamas to a Caribbean cruise. The majority of the cruise line private islands are located in the Bahamas, and these appear regularly on all Caribbean itineraries. The Bahamian ports of Nassau and Freeport, even Florida's Key West, may appear on Caribbean-centric cruises.

Why? They're close to the U.S. and cruise lines use these ports to break up the multiple days at sea needed to sail farther south into the Caribbean proper.

Best Caribbean cruise lines

You'll be hard-pressed to find a cruise line that does not sail to the Caribbean at least for a few months a year. The big-ship lines will station multiple ships in this region year-round, with additional ships swinging by during the colder months.

If you consider the best Caribbean cruise lines to be the ones with the most ship and itinerary choices, look to the big-ship lines such as Carnival , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line .

These lines offer a range of itinerary lengths, port combinations and departure cities from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. Their biggest and newest ships are often deployed to the Caribbean, so you can find all the latest celebrity-backed restaurants, crazy top-deck attractions (like waterslides, climbing walls and roller coaster rides) and expanded cabin choices. These lines cater to all ages, including older couples and families with children.

If you're looking for an adults-only option, Virgin Voyages caters to the young at heart with its edgy new ships. It offers six- and seven-night Caribbean cruises from the late fall until early spring. Viking takes an entirely different approach to no-kids cruises, catering to mature travelers craving culture and educational vacations. It also offers wintertime Caribbean cruises, though many are paired with a Panama Canal crossing.

Luxury lovers should look at the smaller ships of the Seabourn , Silversea and Regent Seven Seas fleets for opulent accommodations and fine dining while sailing the tropics. Oceania , Azamara and Windstar Cruises are less inclusive, but still high end.

For something a little different, try SeaDream Yacht Club for a super-small ship that feels like a private yacht, complete with an emphasis on alfresco recreation and dining. Star Clippers appeals to sailing enthusiasts with its masted ships, simple entertainment and emphasis on water sports.

Things to do in the Caribbean

White sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters are the biggest attractions for most Caribbean cruisers. You'll be hard-pressed to find a Caribbean cruise port that does not offer beach access. Whether you enjoy a cruise line's private beach, a public beach lined with bars or get a day pass to a resort or beach club, you can rarely go wrong with a beach day in the islands.

Water sports are another quintessential Caribbean attraction. Cruisers can swim, snorkel and scuba dive, of course, but they can also kayak, snuba, Jet Ski, sail and parasail. Sometimes you can do these things right from whatever beach is your destination for the day. Otherwise, book a tour to the best spots or for a guided activity. Or, book a leisurely sunset sail or high-octane party cruise to get on the water, not necessarily in it.

Shopping is a popular diversion, from high-end French stores in Martinique and St. Barts to crafts markets and souvenir shops. Historical attractions range from forts erected to protect against pirates to Mayan temples. Cultural tours focus on local cuisine, wine and spirits, and dancing. (Yes, even you can learn to salsa.) Active travelers will find plenty of hiking, biking, zip lining and ATV tours.

Best Caribbean cruise ports

A single cruise line might call at 20 to 30 different ports in the Caribbean. Although you might think they all look like stock photos of white sand beaches with palm trees and blue skies, each island has its own look, culture and vibe. I've sailed to a large number of those ports and would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite. They all have their charms for different reasons.

The following Caribbean cruise ports are generally standouts, no matter your travel style.

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean just offshore from Playa del Carmen and just south of Cancun. It truly offers something for everyone. You can head to the beach, go scuba diving or snorkeling or head to the mainland to see Mayan cultural sites like Tulum and Chichen Itza. Stick around town to find cheap drinks at Senor Frog's or shop for souvenirs.

Cruise ships call at a number of ports in Jamaica: Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Kingston and Falmouth. Many folks spend the day on the beach, often at one of the resorts, but climbing up Dunn's River Falls is a unique experience not to be missed. Cruisers seeking a thrill can find bobsled, zip line, river tubing and ATV tours. And, yes, reggae fans — there is a Bob Marley tour you can take.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is both a popular departure port and port of call on Eastern and Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries. Its Old Town and historic fort overlooking the water are top attractions, but cruisers have the opportunity to visit El Yunque National Forest (the only tropical rainforest on U.S. soil) or head to the beach.

Belize City, Belize

Travelers don't tend to spend much time in Belize City itself, but it's a great jumping-off point for all Belize has to offer. Visit the Altun Ha Mayan ruins, go river tubing and spelunking in caves, zip line through the jungle or go snorkeling or diving along Belize's famous barrier reef (the northern hemisphere's largest).

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

This island is known for its gorgeous Magens Bay beach. However, if you'd rather not share the beach with several ships' worth of cruisers, take the ferry to nearby St. John for the day and find a U.S. national park and a more chill beach experience. Take the kids to the Coral World Ocean Park, your sweetie on a catamaran sail or snorkel trip and your crazy friends on a helmet dive or BOSS underwater scooter adventure.

Known for its lush green twin peaks known as the Pitons, St. Lucia entices travelers with postcard-perfect beaches set against jungle scenery. It even has its own volcano with sulphur springs to visit and all the usual land and sea activities.

Beach, beach and more beach — Aruba is definitely a port to be in, on or near the water. It's one of the southernmost Caribbean islands, found just off the coast of Venezuela, and its location protects it from the summer and fall hurricanes that can hammer the islands to its north and east. Animal lovers might want to check out its ostrich farm — not something you usually find in a Caribbean cruise port.

When to book a Caribbean cruise

The best time to book a Caribbean cruise is clearly right now! Seriously, you can almost always find a deal on a Caribbean cruise if you're flexible enough with your travel dates and cabin types.

If you want to book a popular sail date (such as a Christmas and New Year's Eve sailing) or are looking for a cabin type that's in limited supply (connecting cabins or studio rooms for solo travelers), book as far in advance as you can, at least nine months out if not longer. If you're retired and can drive to a port, you can likely find an inside cabin to book just a few weeks prior to sailing.

The first few months of the year, known as "wave season" in the cruise industry, is a time when cruise lines all offer some kind of booking promotion, and you can often find discounted fares or free booking perks on Caribbean cruises. Many cruise lines also run sales at the end of the summer or during Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and Caribbean sailings are almost always included.

What to bring on a Caribbean cruise

Swimsuits and warm-weather clothing should top your Caribbean cruise packing list, but don't forget the sunscreen. The sun is stronger than you might expect in this part of the world, and you can easily burn during a long day at the beach if you don't apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen. Hats, sunglasses, moisture-wicking athletic clothing and your favorite cover-ups and sundresses are all must-pack items.

I also recommend that all passengers bring a passport on their Caribbean sailing. If you're cruising round-trip from a U.S. port, a passport is not required by law — but it's a good idea to pack one in case of an unexpected medical emergency or mechanical problem that forces you to debark the ship in a foreign country.

Bottom line

Whether you're new to cruising or a hardy sailor, the Caribbean is the perfect place for a cruise vacation. If you've never been, any of the islands will delight. If you've sailed before, there's always some destination you've never visited or an activity you haven't tried.

When winter in your hometown drags on, or the stress of the workweek gets you down, a Caribbean cruise is often just what the doctor ordered to lift the weight of the world from your shoulders and let you escape to a tropical paradise for a few days.

If you're headed to the Caribbean on one of the 2024 cruises on offer, I have one thing to say: Welcome! I lived in Jamaica for decades, travel to the world's favorite warm-weather destination for work (as a travel writer) at least twice a month and am proud to call myself the region's biggest fan. So I couldn't be happier to share my home with you as you set sail on your Caribbean vacation.

Caribbean cruises are a great way to see the region, whether you're getting a taste of the islands on new ships like Wonder of the Seas ®  or returning to make memories at your favorite haunts on more intimate options like Enchantment of the Seas ® . There are almost two dozen Royal Caribbean ships that sail to the region on three basic itineraries — eastern, southern and western.

With year-round sunshine, there's never a bad time to explore everything this part of the world has to offer. In the cooler months, the destination is a welcome — and warming — balm to winter-weary souls. Come summertime, lower prices make it easier on travelers' budgets. Although summer coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, modern meteorological technology ensures that ships have plenty of notice of pending storms, so the captain can avoid any trouble spots and simply steer to fair-weather ports, where you'll have just as much fun.

The Caribbean comprises more than a million square miles, and cruise ships help you explore this captivating corner of the world. From sandy Jamaican beaches on western Caribbean cruises to the forested emerald peaks of St. Lucia on eastern Caribbean sailings to colorful waterfront capitals such as Curaçao's Willemstad on southern Caribbean cruises, there's plenty to see and do. Read on for where 2024 cruises can take you in this region of sand and sun.

Western Caribbean

The western Caribbean is home to some of the most popular islands in the world, including Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Mexico's Cozumel. It's also where you'll find the rugged Central American standout, Belize. But there are also beautiful, lesser-known gems — such as Roatán, Honduras — that are ripe for exploration.

I lived in Jamaica for decades, so excuse me if I'm biased (#sorrynotsorry) when I say that the Caribbean's largest English-speaking island is the total package. Jamaica cruises are the perfect introduction to the land of rum, reggae and Rastafarianism. Fuel your Jamaican jaunt with a piping-hot patty, which can come filled with chicken, beef or vegetables. Island food lovers are staunch fans of either those from Tastee or Juici bakeries (I'm forever Team Tastee, but you should try both and decide for yourself).

The crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounding Grand Cayman are where scuba diving first became popular as a recreational activity, so divers, snorkelers and swimmers will love it here. Whether you're a swimmer or not, don't leave the island (the largest of three Cayman Islands) without a visit to Stingray City, a nearby sandbar where you can stand knee-deep in the shallows, feeding chum to Southern Atlantic stingrays that weigh as much as 200 pounds. Good luck is said to follow those brave enough to smooch them, so pucker up!

In Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, the approximately 185-square-mile island of Cozumel boasts the world's second-largest barrier reef, making it another must for snorkelers and divers. More of a landlubber? Hop on a 45-minute ferry over to Playa del Carmen, a boho beach town on the mainland, where you can chill shoreside and stroll Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), checking out its bars and boutiques.

Headed for Costa Maya? I have fond memories of this Mexican port, where I hopped on the ship's shuttle to the beach at Mahahual and spent the day lazing on sugar-fine sands and eating my body weight in guacamole and chips at beachfront restaurants. Trust me, on Mexico cruises, this is time well spent! Conversely, Belize City is a jumping-off point for people who want to do much more than bask on the beach. Active and adventurous types can zipline through the jungle and tour ancient Maya ruins. Or swim and snorkel with (friendly, I swear!) nurse sharks and stingrays at the appropriately named Shark Ray Alley.

Eastern Caribbean

Eastern Caribbean cruises may take you from The Bahamas' calm, pale blue waters to the frothy surfer-ready swells off Barbados's east coast, stopping at plenty of paradises in between.

The bevy of boutiques on ships like Freedom of the Seas ®  and Quantum of the Seas ®  are tempting. And in the Bahamian capital of Nassau and neighboring Paradise Island, there are lots of other opportunities to snag duty-free designer baubles on Bahamas cruises. Savvy shoppers snap them up, but leave room in their budgets for locally made souvenirs. Like handwoven straw baskets, lamps made from conch shells and distinctive batik clothing and home accessories made from the islands' Androsia fabrics. Shop until you drop, and then raise a toast to your retail smarts at the nearest beach bar with a Goombay Smash, the potent national cocktail made with four types of dark and golden rums. It's also easy to find a bargain in the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix, and not just because they both boast duty-free stores galore. Visitors returning to the U.S. can bring with up to $1,600 worth of souvenirs duty-free — that's twice the duty-free allowance of all the other Caribbean islands. So if you were looking for an excuse to splurge, consider this it.

If you're an outdoorsy type (or cruising with one), islands such as Dominica, St. Lucia and Puerto Rico have your name on them. Known as "the nature island," lush and mountainous Dominica will live on as your jungle fantasy come to life. Take a leisurely boat ride through the mangroves on the Indian River (one of the island's 365 waterways), where you'll spot river birds and see the house used in one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. Or slip on your sneakers and hike a section of the Waitukubuli National Trail, a 115-mile route that winds past waterfalls and over mountains. St. Lucia is famous for its twin volcanic peaks, the Pitons, which preside over the island's southwest coast. The hours-long hike up Gros Piton is probably best left to the fittest in your crew. But a short drive from the port in the northern capital of Castries is the 20-minute hike to the colonial-era fort at Pigeon Island National Park, an active excursion the entire family can enjoy. There's no training required, and dreamy Caribbean views are included. My best tip: Wear your swimsuit so you can cool off at the park's beach before Grandeur of the Seas ®  whisks you away.

In Puerto Rico, there are 24 miles of hiking trails suitable for all levels at El Yunque National Forest, about an hour's drive from the port in San Juan. It's one of the smallest United States national forests but the most diverse, with 250 species of trees, 150 types of ferns and 97 species of birds. Don't forget your camera.

Searching for some local flavor? You don't have to spend a fortune on your Caribbean vacation to enjoy it. On Dominican Republic cruises, the must-try is mamajuana, a potent local liqueur made with steeped leaves, tree bark, herbs and spices. The (acquired) taste is a lot like port, and it can be drunk as a digestif. But mamajuana's reportedly aphrodisiac properties are what make it so popular, so drink responsibly. Try a fried fish cutter (sandwich) in Barbados, where Cuzz's food truck on Bridgetown's Pebbles Beach is a classic. My serving suggestion: Accompany it with a Caribbean view and local brew (try Banks beer) as you sit on the sand. Those with a taste for tropical tipples shouldn't leave San Juan without a piña colada. The famous drink is the island's national cocktail, invented here at either the Caribe Hilton Hotel or at the Old San Juan bar Barrachina, depending on who you speak to. Sample both — you can't go wrong with either one.

Southern Caribbean

Adventure? Check. History? Mouthwatering cuisine and rummy cocktails? Check and check. The southern slice of the Caribbean ticks all the boxes.

No doubt you'll be hitting a Caribbean beach (or three) on your Caribbean cruise, but beyond the sand, a rip-roaring adventure awaits. On Aruba, for example, you can tour Arikok National Park's sprawling and cacti-studded desert landscape on horseback or in an all-terrain vehicle. Bring sunglasses and a hat, because things will get dusty. At Labadee — which is on a small number of southern Caribbean itineraries — you can get a bird's-eye view of Haiti's palm-fringed coastline on the half-mile-long Dragon's Breath Flight Line, which zips you through the trees at up to 50 miles an hour. On the neighboring island of Curaçao, the Ostrich Farm is one of the Caribbean's most unlikely adventures. But where else will you have the chance to stand on an ostrich egg to find out that it won't crack under your weight? The Scenic Railway, also known as the "sugar train," on St. Kitts circumnavigates the island on tracks formerly used to transport sugarcane from plantations to the port. It offers a beautiful ride through the island's interior.

History also comes to life in Puerto Rico at the Spanish colonial fort of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, where you can tour the more-than-500-year-old bastion and snap a selfie in one of its iconic sentry boxes, called garitas . There's also St. Kitts's Brimstone Hill, which took more than a century to build and is considered one of the finest examples of military architecture remaining today.

After a day of exploration, you'll need something to quench your thirst. In the Caribbean, you can do way better than plain water. Visiting Bonaire is the perfect opportunity to try Cadushy, a cactus liqueur made here from a succulent known locally as kadushi. It'll make a great addition to your home bar, as will guavaberry liqueur from St. Maarten. Pick up a bottle of this island spirit — made from aged rum, cane sugar and local guavaberries — when the ship pulls into Philipsburg for a flavorful souvenir. In Martinique and Guadeloupe, connoisseurs will appreciate rhum agricole , a potent and funky cousin of the classic Caribbean spirit. It's made from sugarcane juice rather than molasses. Raise a glass and toast to your Caribbean dreams come true!

Crew members are allowed to show off their tattoos and piercings, and the ships have unisex bathrooms, sexy shows, raucous parties and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere for LGBTQIA+ cruisers, making them feel safe and seen in the sunshine of the Caribbean.

The brand-new Norwegian Prima is an amazing Caribbean cruise for families—both because of its features and its accessibility to different parts of the country. Those family-friendly features include go-kart tracks spanning multiple decks, virtual reality games, an escape room, thrilling dry and wet slides hanging off the edge of the ship, and a neon sports area featuring mini golf, dart rooms, pickleball courts and so much more. And thanks to departures from both Galveston, Texas, and New York City, the Caribbean has never been more accessible to so much of the country. From Texas's south coast, Prima easily reaches southern Caribbean ports like Roatán and Belize, while travelers departing from New York can cruise all the way down to St. Kitts, the Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands, with a stop in Bermuda on the way back, without having to get on a plane first. Like a thriving city at sea, Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships offer up more fun, entertainment and activities than most people can even see and do during a typical weeklong cruise! It is nearly impossible to be bored on an Oasis-class ship. That's why these vessels are the best Caribbean cruises for anyone who wants to try new things like ziplining or simulated surfing, feel nostalgic riding a carousel on a boardwalk, or see Broadway-caliber theatrical shows inside and out.

While they are some of the biggest cruise ships at sea, these vessels were cleverly designed to make it not feel like you are surrounded by upwards of 6,000 other passengers. There's so much to see and do on Royal Caribbean in the Caribbean, you may not even have time to ponder those strange white balls on cruise ships , but if for some reason you do get bored, know that you've got Perfect Day at Coco Cay to visit. This is arguably the best private island in the Caribbean, and you can spend a day here ziplining, riding in a hot-air balloon, chilling out by one of many pools or playing in an incredible waterpark that features North America's tallest waterslide.

But Princess is one of the best Caribbean cruise options because the ships have a retro elegance about them, an old-fashioned level of class with shiny brass decorative elements, elaborate chandeliers, familiar tasty food, upscale wine tastings, cultural enrichment programs, Deal or No Deal games on the main stage, Broadway-style entertainment, and The Love Boat Piazza Party on one of your formal nights.

When it's time to sail away to a new island, the ceremonious hoisting of the sails, which is accompanied by the epic strains of "Conquest of Paradise" from the movie 1492,  is a truly breathtaking sight to behold. And here's an interesting fact : Star Clippers holds the Guinness World Record as the world's largest full-rigged sailing ship. The five-masted vessel is a beauty and a throwback to another era of seafaring. While the big ships may have ziplines and ice-skating rinks, on a Star Clippers cruise you can lounge in a net suspended high above the sea and kayak or stand-up paddleboard off the marina platform at the rear of the ship.

While we love the F1 simulators and the full-size bowling alley on MSC cruises , spending a week at sea on this Caribbean cruise is really all about LEGO for us. Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, on Wednesday embarked on a journey to Miami, Florida, to spearhead Jamaica’s representation at Seatrade Cruise Global 2024. 

This prestigious annual event, running from April 8 to 11, is anticipated to draw over 10,000 attendees and host more than 600 exhibitors.

A platform for industry dialogue and innovation

Seatrade Cruise Global stands as a pivotal platform for stakeholders within the cruise tourism sub-sector to engage in critical discussions on pressing issues and advancements. 

It serves as a melting pot of ideas, where industry leaders converge to shape the future of cruise tourism.

Reflecting on Jamaica’s success in 2023

Minister Bartlett reflected on Jamaica’s remarkable performance in the cruise industry throughout 2023. 

With over 1.2 million cruise passengers welcomed and the prestigious World Travel Award for the World’s Leading Cruise Destination secured, Jamaica showcased its enduring allure and the collaborative efforts of industry partners.

Optimism for continued growth in 2024

Looking ahead with optimism, the tourism minister expressed confidence in Jamaica’s potential for yet another year of record-breaking arrivals in 2024. 

He emphasized the significance of events like Seatrade Cruise Global in facilitating essential connections with key stakeholders, laying the groundwork for sustained growth.

High-level engagements and strategic meetings

Over the course of the conference, Minister Bartlett is set to engage in a series of high-level meetings with prominent figures across the global cruise industry. 

From discussions with Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Lines, to meetings with executives from Disney Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and MSC Cruise Lines, the agenda is packed with strategic engagements aimed at fostering collaboration and exploring new opportunities.

Solidifying Jamaica’s position as a leading cruise destination

Minister Bartlett reiterated Jamaica’s commitment to maintaining its status as a premier cruise destination. 

Through active participation in Seatrade Cruise Global, Jamaica aims to solidify its position in the industry, ensuring a prosperous future for local communities reliant on the cruise sector for their livelihoods.

Minister Bartlett is scheduled to return to Jamaica on Thursday, April 11.

Norwegian Cruise Line Is Adding Caribbean, Bahamas Cruises From a New US Homeport

Norwegian Cruise Line is adding a new homeport next year: Jacksonville, Fla, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

The company has signed a three-year agreement to homeport its Norwegian Gem cruise port in Jacksonville, beginning in November 2025. 

The 2,394-guest-capacity ship will be home-porting seasonally in Jacksonville each year from November through April, through at least 2028. 

That will mean a new option for cruises to The Bahamas and the Caribbean — the first time NCL has home-ported in the Florida city. 

So what will the itineraries be like? NCL says Gem will be sailing a mix of 12-day and 11-day cruises to the Eastern Caribbean, with stops in Caribbean ports like San Juan, St Kitts, St Thomas, Puerto Plata and Antigua, among others. 

That’s along with four- and five-day cruises that will be stopping in The Bahamas, with calls on both Nassau, Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay destination and in Grand Bahama. 

Cruises for 2025 are already on sale, the company confirmed.

5 days in Jamaica, from Negril to Montego Bay, beaches, bamboo rafting and waterfalls

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – It’s the Jamaican equivalent of a gondola ride in Venice. But instead of winding through a labyrinth of canals in an ancient Italian city, we floated down the scenic Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft just east of Montego Bay.

Leroy, our guide, expertly maneuvered the boat down the waterway, pole in hand, occasionally pushing us away from the banks and around rocks. He even sang for us.

All the while, I sat back on my cushioned seat, occasionally dipping my toes in the water, allowing someone else to do the hard work for me.

The raft ride might be a metaphor for Jamaica, a vacation destination that doesn’t make you work too hard -- either to get there or once you’ve arrived.

The island nation is home to stunning beaches, scenic waterfalls and terrific cuisine, all set to a soul-soothing Bob Marley soundtrack.

One of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, Jamaica is now just a four-hour flight from Northeast Ohio via Frontier Airlines , which is expanding rapidly at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

But you might want to act fast – my flights to and from Montego Bay last month were less than half full. I doubt Frontier will keep the route around if it can’t attract more customers.

It’s unclear why the flights weren’t full. I was traveling in March, which should be peak season for Jamaica.

The new route may be the victim of bad timing.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of State updated its travel advisory for the country , recommending that Americans reconsider travel to the island nation due to crime and medical services. Although Jamaica has been under a Level 3 advisory (“reconsider travel”) since 2022, the updated warning included detailed information about certain areas to avoid, including some neighborhoods in the parishes that include Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril, three of the most popular destinations for American tourists.

I’m a pretty intrepid traveler, and the language in the advisory made me nervous.

Still, when my boss tells me to buy a ticket to Jamaica, who am I to argue?

As I was planning my trip, I connected with a fellow Shaker Heights High School alum, who has been in the hospitality industry in Jamaica for decades. He assured me it was safe to come, and agreed to show me around his adopted country, which he has come to love.

And indeed, I am so glad I went.

Where to go?

I split my time between two of the country’s best-known tourist spots, Negril and Montego Bay.

Negril, on the west coast, is about a 90-minute drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. But it’s worth the extra travel time for the stunning beach here.

My resort, the lovely Azul Beach Resort Negril by Karisma, is located on what’s called Seven Mile Beach, a gorgeous stretch of sand that is lined with resorts, restaurants, boat charters and other activities. (Interestingly, Seven Mile beach is actually four miles – but either way, it was plenty enough sand for my purposes.)

My husband and I took several long beach walks here, heading south on the sand our first day. We hesitated when we came to a stretch of shoreline where the beach briefly disappeared and the waterfront path veered through a wooded area near the busy roadway. The security guard at our resort assured us the pathway was safe – and indeed, we walked the route a couple more times with absolutely no concerns, past a public beach, a large Beaches property and the popular Margaritaville Negril.

Immediately north of our property was Sandals Negril, one of seven properties in Jamaica operated by Sandals, which was founded in Montego Bay in 1981 and helped launch the all-inclusive movement here decades ago. And next to Sandals: Hedonism II, a clothing optional resort. We walked the beach here too, though I kept my camera in my pocket and was grateful for the sunglasses that hid my eyes.

Along the beach, we were approached numerous times by entrepreneurial Jamaicans, hawking everything from wood carvings to weed, cold coconuts to friendship bracelets. Jamaican vendors have a reputation as being overly aggressive, but that wasn’t my experience. A polite “no thank you” was accepted graciously in every instance.

Because our time in Negril was so limited, we stayed close to the resort. But if I had more time, I might have booked a snorkeling cruise or a sunset sail or any one of numerous other on-the-water options, from fishing charters to water skiing.

My husband and I did sign out a small sailboat one afternoon at our resort, which turned into a bit of an adventure when the wind died down and we had some trouble getting back to shore.

We also hired a local driver to take us the 7 or so miles to Rick’s Café, a famous bar and entertainment venue known for its spectacular sunsets and towering cliffs above the sea.

Visitors, who come here via boat, car and bus by the thousands, are welcome – encouraged even -- to leap from the cliffs into the crystalline water below.

Some of the platforms are quite high – up to 35 feet above the water – while others are a more modest 10-12 feet. It was fun to watch the amateurs jump, and occasionally belly flop, into the water.

The real fun for spectators, though, is to watch some of the locals performing for tips, including a bunch of kids doing back flips off the rocks and a man who looked like he was trying out for the Olympics perfecting a double gainer off a 70-foot high platform.

I (conveniently) didn’t wear my bathing suit and so therefore wasn’t really tempted to join the jumpers. One of the lifeguards didn’t buy my excuse, and offered to loan me an extra suit, which I declined.

Montego Bay

After two nights in Negril, we headed north back to Montego Bay, the second largest city in Jamaica after Kingston. Most of this area’s resorts are located just east of the city in an upscale neighborhood known as Ironshore.

My home-away-from home for three nights was the Riu Reggae, one of three large side-by-side Spanish-owned Riu resorts just east of the airport. (The jets flying overhead sometimes looked so close you could reach up and grab them.)

In recent decades, all-inclusive resorts have become omnipresent throughout Jamaica, as well as numerous other Caribbean destinations, including the Dominican Republic and Cancun. Depending on the resort, an all-inclusive stay can be a relative bargain, including all food, drinks and numerous activities at one price.

Our beach at the Riu wasn’t nearly as nice as our stretch of sand in Negril, measuring only about a half-mile from end to end. The resorts in this area, too, have erected walls between the properties, making it impossible to walk along the sand for any significant distance – a major bummer for this beach walker.

While in Montego Bay, we were more interested in exploring beyond the resort.

Fellow Shaker alum Lee Weinstock , a longtime resident of Montego Bay, graciously agreed to accompany me to several spots, but I also hired drivers through the resort to drive me around.

Resorts, too, sell group tours to some of the best-known regional attractions, including the Luminous Lagoon and Martha Brae rafting.

Weinstock said visitors shouldn’t feel afraid to explore Jamaica.

“I’m not knocking anybody who wants to lie on the beach, eat and drink,” he said. “But you’re not seeing the real Jamaica.”

Among our stops, in addition to the rafting:

* Luminous Lagoon , on Jamaica’s north shore, where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea, creating perfect conditions for tiny glow-in-the-dark microorganisms called dinoflagellates, which light up in the shallow, warm water. Jamaica is one of only a handful of places in the world where this phenomenon occurs and the only one where you can swim in the water, fanning your arms under the surface to make the sea glow.

* YS Falls , one of dozens of stunning waterfalls in the country, where swimmers can paddle in the pools, scale slippery rocks (watershoes recommended) and launch from a rope swing into the blue water below. Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios is a popular stop for cruise passengers – and the No. 1 attraction in the country. Weinstock instead took us to his favorite waterfall, a gorgeous spot on the south side of the island, which gets considerably less crowded than Dunn’s River.

* Greenwood Great House , a late 18th-century era plantation home built by Richard Barrett, a cousin of British poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who made his wealth from sugar. The estate was one of a handful to survive the Christmas Rebellion in 1831, a major slave revolt in the Montego Bay area that was one of the catalysts for the abolition of slavery throughout the British colonies. Most of the furnishings are authentic and include some fascinating pieces – a piano made for King Edward VII by Thomas Broadwood, who also made pianos for Beethoven; two working polyphons; and a spectacular verandah offering 180-degree views of the north coast.

Along the way, Weinstock stopped at a monument to reggae superstar Peter Tosh in the small coastal town of Bluefields and for cold coconuts at a place called Bamboo Avenue, where the towering trees tunnel the roadway.

He also took us to some of his favorite local food stops, including a waterfront hut for fried fish en route from Montego Bay to Negril and Bigga Beach Road Restaurant for some terrific jerk chicken.

The best meal of my entire trip (and it wasn’t even close) was at an area called the Border – at the border between St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland parishes, a food market on the south coast where we sat at a picnic table near the water watching fishermen clean their catch. We feasted on fried lobster, snapper, conch stew and bammy, a tasty Jamaican flatbread. No way would I have at stopped at this place on my own.

I never once felt unsafe or afraid – except, perhaps, in the passenger seats of some of the cars and vans we were transported in. Jamaican drivers are notoriously aggressive and traffic can be crazy congested in the cities.

To save the costs of hiring so many drivers, I briefly considered renting a car for our trip but quickly disavowed myself of that notion. In addition to the aggressive drivers and not-great road conditions in some areas, Jamaica is still part of the British commonwealth, with drivers using the left side of the road. All of that seemed more than I wanted to handle.

Indeed, the driving was the only part of the trip that stressed me out at all.

But it was nothing that a one-hour rafting trip down the Martha Brae River couldn’t resolve.

Some of these rafting trips also include massages, either foot rubs or full-body treatments.

But my husband and I opted for the rafting experience by itself, a relaxing, 3-mile meander through the Jamaican jungle, a serene ending to a most enjoyable trip.

We split our time between two of the most popular tourist areas in Jamaica, Negril and Montego Bay, about 50 miles apart on the west (Negril) and north (Montego Bay) coasts.

Where we stayed: In Negril, we spent two nights at the Azul Beach Resort Negril by Karisma, with 285 rooms, including many with patios adjoining one of four pools. The resort features six restaurants, eight bars and an extra-long beach. Rates include food and drink, plus some water activities, and start at about $210 per person per day, double occupancy. In Montego Bay, we spent three nights at the adults-only Riu Reggae, part of a three-resort Riu complex just east of Sangster International Airport. The resort features 450 rooms, five restaurants, three pools and nightly entertainment, plus access to amenities at the neighboring Riu Montego Bay. The complex has a bit of a party vibe, but I didn’t find it overly loud or rowdy. Rates start at about $200 per person per day, double occupancy. Information: riu.com
