Why Embark on a Dominican Republic Tour?

No other country in the Caribbean is as multifaceted as the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola. Here, where Columbus first entered the "New World" in 1492, no travel wish remains unfulfilled. In the picturesque old town of Santo Domingo, the state capital, the colonial past is still omnipresent. Along more than 2,000 miles of coastline, there are countless paradisiacal beaches and idyllic bays. The mountainous interior of the country boasts a colorful, tropical flora and fauna.

This Caribbean dream come true is rounded off by the lively and warm inhabitants. They will welcome you with their very special charm and above all an incomparable hospitality in your home country. What are you waiting for?   Less

What to See During Your Dominican Republic Vacation

The beach of Bávaro is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in the whole country. On the east coast of the Dominican Republic, near Punta Cana, nine kilometers of fine white sand and turquoise Caribbean sea await you. The beach is very protected by the offshore reef and invites you to swim and snorkel. Excursions with the glass-bottom boat or canoeing are also offered here. A few kilometers from Bavaro is also the former fishing village of El Cortecito, whose public beach is just as beautiful, but a little quieter.

Los Haitises National Park

One of the most important national parks of the Dominican Republic is Los Haitises. On 1.500 square kilometers a variety of animals and plants are at home. There is hardly any other place in the entire Caribbean with a comparable diversity of species. You can reach the national park, which consists of mangrove swamps, tropical rainforests, lagoons, caves and hills, only by water. On site you have the choice between hikes, rides with the off-road vehicle or special cave tours.

Cayo Levantado

The small island Cayo Levantado in the bay of Samaná is also known as Bacardi Island, because many of the commercials for the white rum were shot here. You can reach the island after a 15-minute boat ride. Look forward to a beautiful white coral sand beach and turquoise blue water. The island is under nature protection.

Catalina Island

Catalina Island, which is only about nine square kilometers in size, is located in the east of the Dominican Republic. The paradisiacal beaches of the completely uninhabited island invite as a destination for day trips. Think about your snorkeling equipment! The offshore corals are perfect for underwater exploration tours. From the main beach, where all boats moor and which can therefore quickly become full, you can reach beautiful, quiet neighboring beaches on foot in a short time.   Less

Experience colorful carnivals on a Dominican Republic vacation

Colorful carnivals

Since the Dominican Republic is a Catholic country, almost every town celebrates the festivities for its patron saint. Carnival is celebrated throughout the country in February: There are colorful parades with dressed up musicians and dancers. The day of independence, February 27th, marks the end of the carnival season. During the Holy Week in March/April you can also witness processions and parades. Another highlight is the Festival de Merengue at the end of July or beginning of August in Santo Domingo. Entire streets are closed to traffic and the popular Dominican dance Merengue is performed.

What To Expect From a Dominican Republic Vacation

Hiking in the highlands and snorkeling in turquoise sea.

As diverse as the landscape of the Dominican Republic are the possibilities to fill your trip here with unforgettable moments. Besides relaxing hours at the palm-lined beach and snorkeling excursions into the fascinating underwater world, the mountain range of the Cordillera Central invites you to mountain biking and hiking. But also on horseback the country can be explored wonderfully. Through lush green landscapes and charming villages, past rivers and sugar cane plantations you will experience Caribbean flair from a new perspective.

Dancing and Chocolate Making

You can get a feel for the culture by taking dance lessons in the capital, Santo Domingo. Try your hand at the popular Merengue or Bachata, for example. On a trip to the communities in the north you will learn more about the local traditions and get a better understanding of your destination. The Dominican Republic is also an important export country for chocolate. Inland, you will find a 40-hectare plantation, whose operators are also committed to teaching you more about the cocoa bean and how this sweet delicacy is made.   Less

Your Trip to the Dominican Republic: The Complete Guide

caribbean tours dominican republic

The Dominican Republic is known for its beautiful beaches and a multitude of resorts, but it’s also one of the most diverse destinations you can visit and one that remains culturally rich. You’ll want to come here for the country's merengue, bachata and live music and dancing scene, its hospitable people, as well as its rich outdoors, brimming with cacao and coffee trails, farms, and tropical forests. From colonial cities to beach towns, national parks with hiking trails and mountains, offshore islands, and wildlife-rich lagoons, there’s more to do and see than you can fit in one trip.

Here are some tips for an overview of what to expect on your trip to the Dominican Republic, to give you a leg up on activities, accommodation options, best ways to save, and cultural norms.

 TripSavvy / Evan Polenghi

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit : The weather is spectacular from late November through February, with breezy mornings and evenings. Rain showers are rare during this time, and temperatures are in the low to mid 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day.

Language: The official language in the Dominican Republic is Spanish . Dominicans tend to speak very fast. They also have their own Dominican Spanish terminology and slang. Learning a few popular phrases can help break the ice.

Currency: The Dominican peso . The rates fluctuate—$1 is approximately 52 Dominican pesos as of Dec. 2019.

Getting Around: Public transportation is widely available, from large coach buses connecting different parts of the country to smaller van buses or “guaguas” for town-to-town transfers, and local shared taxis (“carritos”) as well as motorbike taxis. Major car rental companies are available in major cities and airports.

Travel Tip: Fridays are school field trip days, so museums and historical sites can get crowded. Beaches and rivers are also busy on Sunday, when locals flock to the seaside or to freshwater to relax, party, and cool off. To avoid disappointment, agree on fares before you agree to any service; tipping is customary.

Things to Do

There are a myriad of activities available in the Dominican Republic, from extreme outdoor adventures to cultural experiences.

  • Tour history, architecture, and museums: Visit the Colonial City in Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site —tour its museums and 16th-century structures such as the Ozama Fortress. Walk Puerto Plata city’s center for Victorian architecture.
  • Hike and enjoy the great outdoors: Nature sights abound wherever you choose to stay in the DR. Hike national parks and mountains and swim in waterfalls in Jarabacoa. Hike Taino caves in Barahona and Pedernales. Go canyoning to 27 Damajagua Falls and Magic Mushroom in Puerto Plata province. Go beach-hopping and sample the country's 30 miles of coastline , from Punta Cana to the Samana Peninsula’s rugged beaches reached by boat, Puerto Plata’s golden coast and offshore islands Saona and Catalina.
  • Experience the culture: Sample Dominican cuisine , dance to live merengue and bachata, have drinks at the colmado (the local bodega) and attend a baseball game in season or join in when you see teams practicing.

Explore more attractions, including the best things to do in the Dominican Republic , and the top things to do in Santo Domingo .

What to Eat and Drink

Dominican cuisine is a rich blend of cultures, from Taino to African, Spanish, and Middle Eastern. A typical Dominican dish you should try is mangů—look for this staple plantain mash at breakfast. Sancocho, hearty meat and root vegetable stew, is a Dominican favorite. Streetside fried snacks are also popular, particularly late at night, such as chimichurri burgers, chicharron, or fried pork rinds. A staple Dominican dish found at almost any local restaurant at lunchtime is the national dish, or la bandera Dominicana: rice and beans with stewed chicken, beef or fish, and a side of salad, from potato to pasta salads, and slices of fried plantain.

Desserts are a must in the DR, many of which are coconut-based. Ask locals for the best bakery or dulceria in your area. Ice cream is also popular given the weather; local brand BON has locales all over the country, and you’ll spot mobile ice cream vendors in neighborhoods and parks.

Drinks are part and parcel of life in the country. Sample the country’s renowned rum brands—Brugal and Barcelo or Bermudez, to start—but also taste the many fresh tropical fruit juices. These are also offered as refreshing smoothies, known as batidas, typically made with condensed milk and sugar. A famous Dominican batida is called “morir sonando”—dying while dreaming—a shake made with oranges, condensed milk, and sugar.

Explore our article on the best places to visit in the Dominican Republic as you plan your trip.

Getting There

The Dominican Republic has seven international airports receiving international flights from all over the world, including neighboring Caribbean islands. The best way to fly to the DR is to select the airport that is closest to your chosen accommodation. The four most popular airports include:

  • Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ): Ideal for stays in any part of the Punta Cana area, including Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro, Cap Cana, and Uvero Alto.
  • Las Americas International Airport (SDQ): Located in Santo Domingo. Ideal for stays in Santo Domingo, Boca Chica, and Juan Dolio.
  • Gregorio Luperon International Airport (POP): Located in Puerto Plata. Ideal for stays in Puerto Plata, Cabarete, Sosua, and locations on the north coast.
  • El Catey International Airport (AZS): Located in Samana. Ideal for stays anywhere on the Samana Peninsula.
  • Cibao International Airport (STI): Located just outside of Santiago de los Caballeros, the country’s second-largest city. Ideal for stays in Jarabacoa or Puerto Plata, approximately an hour and 20 minutes north.

Car rentals are available at all major international airports and in major cities. Highways are extensive countrywide, as the country boasts some of the most developed infrastructure in the Caribbean. You can also access major bus terminals with a quick cab ride from Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, and Punta Cana.

Culture and Customs

As a major tourism destination, the Dominican Republic offers many modern conveniences and it won’t be a major culture shock to visit. There are, however, cultural customs that you’ll want to know of to immerse smoothly and to be respectful of the destination and its people.

  • It is considered good manners to say good morning or greet as you enter a business or public transportation, even if it’s filled with strangers. “Saludos” and “Buen Dia” go a long way in establishing respect and rapport. Greeting is expected as you enter shops or places where you are seeking assistance.
  • Tipping is customary for services received, from hotels to taxi drivers and staff at all inclusive resorts. Tip generously. In restaurants, you might have to flag the waiter down for the bill; there’s rarely a rush to kick the customer out.
  • There is such a thing as “Dominican time” when it comes to events; expect a one or two hour delay.
  • When agreeing to services of any kind, such as taxis and tours, agree on a price before you accept. Do not flag down or enter random taxis in the big cities, or venture alone to local clubs and bars after dark, unless in a major tourist area such as the Colonial City. Keep the Uber app on your phone and purchase a local data plan in case there is no Wi-Fi where you’re going.
  • Driving in the DR’s cities can be intimidating unless you have extensive experience driving abroad or in New York City. Opt for taxis or private drivers instead.

Money Saving Tips

  • Public parks are ubiquitous in the Dominican Republic; buy your own drinks at the local “colmado” or bodega, and head to the park to enjoy and save from pricey bars and cocktails.
  • Rideshares such as Uber are popular in Santo Domingo and Santiago and will save you money in-city or to airports.
  • Taking the bus to various parts of the country is easy. Services such as Caribe Tours, Expreso Bavaro, and Metro Tours are safe and have numerous daily departures to multiple parts of the DR for a reasonable fare that doesn’t exceed $10. Buses are air-conditioned and occasionally have Wi-Fi and movies.
  • Book your tours directly with licensed tour providers rather than through your hotel; this will save you money. Be sure to research the tour operators before you sign up.

Dominican Republic

Every year thousands of Spaniards choose this country attracted by its beaches, its “all inclusive”, its waters and its people. But the Dominican Republic has more things to offer the traveler, beautiful places, traditions, sports, music, gastronomy… We propose a series of places whose visit is almost mandatory.

Visit our home page for more information about excursions to punta cana.

One of the most curious and impressive activities that you can develop in those parts is whale watching. The Dominican Republic is considered one of the best places in the world to observe these enormous mammals, and it is even possible to dive near them. Between the months of January and February, thousands of humpback whales migrate from the North Atlantic to mate off the Samaná peninsula. On the waters where numerous ships sunk in the 17th century by hurricanes or pirates rest, the ritual is simply spectacular. Samaná is one of the most recommended areas of the island for those who prefer to travel on their own to discover paradisiacal hidden beaches, such as Las Galeras, or go scuba diving in the sonorous Cabo Cabrón. Although its best-known landscape is that of Playa Rincón, considered one of the best in the entire Caribbean: almost 3 km of white sand coves that make the intense green of the palm trees that surround them and the turquoise blue of the sea even more spectacular.

The Dominican Republic is the cradle of merengue and seeing it dance is quite a spectacle. As a curiosity, you can attend a baseball game, since it is the country that exports the most baseball players to the United States, and enjoy a different sport than what you are used to seeing. Of course, if we talk about “national sport”, the most followed there are cockfights. For the curious without many qualms and lovers of playing some money, in every city or town there is a “gallera”. The best known is the Alberto Bonetti Burgos “galling coliseum”, in the capital.

In Puerto Plata, the Brugal Rum distillery is a must. Dominican rum, less sweet than those produced in the former French colonies or elsewhere in the Caribbean, is distinguished by its elegance and well-defined aroma and body. Tasting it at sunset on the terrace of a grocery store is one of the most rewarding experiences for lovers of this drink. Between Puerto Plata and Playa Grande are Cabarete, one of the best places in the world to practice kite surfing due to the wind and waves of up to four meters, and Río San Juan, the perfect place to practice scuba diving. In addition to its coral mountains between 6 and 50 meters deep, there is one of the best freshwater caves that exist for diving, Cueva Dudu.

CULTURE & ARCHITECTURE

The Dominican Republic is a country full of history. Dominicans are a mixture of cultures between the Spanish, the African and the Taíno natives. All these influences can be seen in their food, religion, music and architecture. Santo Domingo, the oldest colonial city in America, has well preserved colonial buildings that will take you back more than 500 years.

Rum is more than just a drink for dominicans, it’s part of their culture. This spirit was born in the Caribbean in 1620, even used as a currency back them. The original Dominican Republic rum distillery, Bermudez , was founded in 1852, and it’s been going strong ever since.

Dominicans are famous for its kindness and joy. They are always happy and welcoming. Experts in hospitality, and excellent dancers, Dominicans will spice up any situation. Prepare to laugh, dance, and chat.

What to expect

Spanish is the official language in Dominican Republic. Due to their big tourism industry, English will be widely spoken in hotels and tourist attractions, but not in the countryside. You are encouraged to learn simple words and basic phrases in Spanish, cuban will really appreciate it.

ELECTRICITY

In the Dominican Republic the standard voltage is 110V and the frequency is 60 Hz. That’s the standard voltage in the american continent; If you are traveling from the EU you will need an adaptor.

The Dominican peso is the official currency in the Dominican Republic. USD are widely accepted as well. Other foreign currencies, like euros, will be accepted in hotels and major attractions but not local wise. Credit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are easy to find in the cities. You can exchange your currency at the bank, airport, exchange houses or withdraw directly from the ATM.  1 USD equals 54 pesos (as of 2023).

The Dominican Republic has a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures and high humidity year-round. The country experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the wet season (May to October). The average year-round temperature is approximately 79 °F (26 °C).

The Dominican Republic is relatively safe to visit overall. Crime rates are low, especially by the touristic areas where police presence is common. However, petty crime do happen, and some violent crime can be seen in poor neighborhoods. Exercise caution and try to avoid walking alone late at night if you are outside the hotel complex.

How to get around

  • Rental Cars: R enting a car is a popular option for travelers who want flexibility and independence. Several car rental companies operate in major cities and airports. Driving in the Dominican Republic is on the right side of the road, and it’s advisable to familiarize yourself with local traffic rules and regulations. Road conditions can vary, so exercise caution, especially in rural areas.
  • Taxis: Taxis are widely available throughout the Dominican Republic, particularly in tourist areas and airports. It’s best to use licensed taxis, which are easily recognizable by their distinctive color and markings. Negotiate the fare in advance or ensure the driver uses the meter. In major cities like Santo Domingo, you can also use ride-hailing apps for convenient and reliable transportation.
  • Public Buses: Public buses, known as “guaguas” or “conchos,” are a common mode of transportation for locals. These are shared vans or minibusses that follow fixed routes within cities and between towns. While they are affordable, they can be crowded and may not always follow strict schedules. It’s essential to confirm the route with the driver or other passengers before boarding.
  • Motoconchos: Motoconchos are motorcycle taxis that operate in many areas, particularly in urban centers and rural towns. They are a quick and inexpensive way to get around, but safety precautions should be taken. Always wear a helmet, negotiate the fare in advance, and choose licensed motoconcho drivers.
  • Carros Públicos: Carros Públicos, also known as “public cars” or “carritos,” are shared taxis or vans that follow specific routes between towns and cities. They are a popular mode of transportation for both locals and tourists. Carros Públicos have designated pickup and drop-off points and can be a cost-effective way to travel longer distances.

Visa Policy

The visa policy of the Dominican Republic allows citizens of many countries to enter the country for tourism purposes without requiring a visa in advance. The specific requirements and lengths of stay vary depending on the nationality of the visitor. Citizens of the United States, Canada, European Union member countries, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, are granted a tourist card upon arrival. This tourist card is valid for 30 days and allows visitors to engage in tourism-related activities.

For citizens of the following countries, a tourist card can be obtained upon arrival: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, European Union member countries, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Panama, Mexico, Venezuela, and several Caribbean nations.

For citizens of some countries, a visa is required before traveling to the Dominican Republic. These countries include China, India, Russia, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and several others. Visitors from these countries should apply for a tourist visa at the nearest Dominican Republic embassy or consulate before their trip. The visa application process usually involves submitting relevant documents, such as a passport, application form, proof of travel arrangements, and financial information.

For longer stays or purposes other than tourism, such as business, work, or study, different types of visas are available. These visas typically require additional documentation, such as letters of invitation, proof of employment or study, and may have specific requirements for duration of stay and activities allowed.

It’s essential to check the most up-to-date visa requirements and regulations before traveling to the Dominican Republic, as they can change periodically. It’s recommended to consult with the nearest Dominican Republic embassy or consulate or visit the official website of the Dominican Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the most accurate and current information regarding visa requirements for your specific nationality.

Exploring the Dominican Republic: A Budget Backpacker’s Guide

A re you a budget traveler longing for adventure in a tropical paradise? Look no further than the Dominican Republic (DR), a hidden gem in the Caribbean that offers a wealth of experiences for backpackers on a budget.

The history of the Dominican Republic is deeply intertwined with the legacy of Christopher Columbus, who arrived on the island of Hispaniola during his first voyage to the New World in 1492. His landing marked the beginning of European colonization in the Americas and initiated centuries of cultural exchange and conflict.

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, serving as the seat of Spanish colonial power in the region.

Visitors can explore the cobblestone streets of the Zona Colonial , a UNESCO World Heritage site, and marvel at architectural treasures such as the Alcázar de Colón, the former residence of Columbus's son Diego.

Why Choose the Dominican Republic?

1. diversity of landscapes.

The DR is blessed with diverse landscapes, including white sandy beaches, towering mountains, dense jungles, and picturesque waterfalls.

2. Affordability

One of the biggest draws of backpacking in the Dominican Republic is its affordability. From budget-friendly accommodations to cheap eats, transportation, and activities, you can stretch your travel budget further here than in many other Caribbean destinations.

3. Rich Culture and History

Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and fascinating history of the DR as you explore its colonial cities, visit local markets, and interact with friendly locals. From the lively rhythms of merengue and bachata to the mouthwatering flavors of Dominican cuisine, you'll be captivated by the country's unique cultural heritage.

4. Easy Entry Requirements

It's essential to review the visa requirements applicable to your country to determine whether you need both an e-ticket and a visa. If your country is exempt from visa requirements, you can enter using only your DR e-ticket and passport.

Getting Around

1. public transportation.

The Dominican Republic has an extensive network of buses, guaguas (minibusses), and motoconchos (motorcycle taxis), making it easy to get around on a budget. While public transportation may be crowded and chaotic at times, it's a great way to experience local life and connect with fellow travelers.

2. Hitchhiking

For the more adventurous traveler, hitchhiking is a popular and relatively safe way to get around the DR. Just be sure to use common sense and trust your instincts when accepting rides from strangers.

3. Renting a Car

If you prefer more freedom and flexibility in your travels, renting a car is convenient for exploring the DR at your own pace. Remember that driving in the DR can be challenging due to poor road conditions and aggressive drivers, so proceed cautiously.

Accommodations

Hostels are the go-to choice for budget-conscious backpackers in the Dominican Republic. With dormitory-style accommodations and communal facilities, hostels offer a fun and social atmosphere where you can meet like-minded travelers from around the world.

2. Guesthouses and Homestays

For a more authentic and intimate experience, consider staying in a guesthouse or homestay with a local family. You will save money on accommodations and gain insights into Dominican culture and customs that you won't find in a traditional hotel.

For the ultimate budget-friendly experience, bring your tent and camp out under the stars in one of the DR's many national parks or beachside campgrounds. Just be sure to check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits before pitching your tent.

Must-Visit Destinations

1. santo domingo.

As the capital city of the DR, Santo Domingo is a must-visit destination for history buffs and culture vultures alike. Explore the cobblestone streets of the Zona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit iconic landmarks such as the Alcazar de Colon and the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor.

2. Punta Cana

Renowned for its pristine beaches and all-inclusive resorts, Punta Cana is a paradise for sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts. Spend your days lounging on the beach, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or zip-lining through the jungle canopy.

3. Samana Peninsula

Located on the northeastern coast of the DR, the Samana Peninsula is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Explore secluded beaches, hike to breathtaking waterfalls, and embark on a whale-watching excursion during the winter months.

Budget-Friendly Activities

1. beach hopping.

With over 1,000 miles of coastline, the DR is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean . From the turquoise waters of Playa Rincon to the vibrant nightlife of Playa Bavaro, there's a beach for every taste and budget.

2. Hiking and Nature Trails

Lace up your hiking boots and explore the DR's lush rainforests, rugged mountains, and scenic nature trails. Don't miss the opportunity to hike to the summit of Pico Duarte , the highest peak in the Caribbean, for panoramic views that will take your breath away.

3. Cultural Experiences

Immerse yourself in Dominican culture by attending a traditional dance performance, sampling local cuisine at a street food market, or joining a guided tour of a coffee plantation or rum distillery.

Safety Tips

1. exercise caution in tourist areas.

While the DR is generally safe for travelers, petty crimes such as theft and pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded tourist areas. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

2. Respect Local Customs and Traditions

Show respect for the local culture and customs by dressing modestly, asking permission before taking photographs, and greeting people courteously and respectfully.

3. Stay Informed

Stay informed about current events and travel advisories in the DR by monitoring local news sources and registering with your embassy or consulate before traveling. Read things to know before visiting the RD .

Backpacking in the Dominican Republic offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the Caribbean's beauty, culture, and adventure on a budget . With its diverse landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality, the DR will leave a lasting impression on every traveler who ventures off the beaten path to explore its hidden treasures.

Whether you’re a food lover, beach bunny or thrillseeker, adventure awaits in the Dominican Republic

What makes the perfect holiday? A destination with historical significance and rich contemporary culture? Perfect beaches or a spot of snorkelling? Or somewhere that packs in everything from adrenaline-charged activities, to delicious local cuisine and a vibrant nightlife?

The Dominican Republic ticks all these boxes and more, and with flexible payment options, generous baggage allowance and high standards of hotels and car hire, there’s no one better to travel to this paradise island with than British Airways Holidays. So here’s our guide to finding what the most-visited destination in the Caribbean has in store for you…

For beach lovers

If you like action packed beaches, try Cabarete’s lively blue waters, which are famous for kiteboarding, surfing, sailing and windsurfing. Or head to Punta Cana’s stunning 32km coastline: lined with a calmer turquoise sea and luxury resorts, it offers scuba diving, speedboats, and catamaran cruises. Back on dry land, the town offers world-class golf - Punta Espada Golf Club, designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, is ranked as one of the best in the Caribbean. Come evening, enjoy the beachfront bars and restaurants where you can enjoy heritage Taino,  African and European dishes – give local meaty soup specialty sancocho or mofongo (mashed plantains) a try. For some extra fun, enjoy the town’s clubs or head out on a party cruise.

For a more restful beachy break that boasts the same luxury accommodation options, head north to the golden sands of Playa Grande for a dip in the crystal clear waters. Or try La Romana’s white sand beach, perfect for snorkelling, swimming, or simply taking in the stunning views – and be sure to check out the replica 16th-century Mediterranean village at Altos de Chavon, nearby. Take a day trip to Saona Island, a protected park with fine white sands, swaying palm trees and beach shacks serving cocktails and playing Merengue and Bachata tunes. For more relaxed vibes, visit the northeast coast and the fishing community of Las Galeras, Samaná, an excellent place to chill or emabark on a whale-watching trip. From here you can take a 15-minute drive or a quick boat ride to Playa Rincon – ranked as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

For culture vultures

The capital city of Santo Domingo is a must for history lovers, with its Spanish colonial architecture, ancient ruins and cobblestone streets. It was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, Christopher’s younger brother, and functioned as the headquarters for Spain’s colonisation. Museums and monuments telling the story of that era include the Ozama Fortress – the oldest built fortress in the Americas, the museum of the Royal Houses – the UNESCO World Heritage listed Colonial Zone and the Cathedral Santa Maria, which was built from 1504 to 1550, making it the oldest Cathedral in The Americas. These days, Santo Domingo is a metropolitan city with festivals, music venues and cute cafes, and just a 15-minute drive to the Malecon beachfront promenade, where high-end restaurants, lively bars and nightclubs await.

Puerto Plata is one of the main tourist areas of the Dominican Republic and a place where old meets new. Check out Pink Street with its colourful heritage buildings, Umbrella Street with pretty hanging brollies and the historical meeting spot of Central Park, also known as Independence Square. Take in views over the city on the Telefrico-cable car up to Pico Isabel de Torres mountain and pop out to enjoy the botanical garden and large Christ the Redeemer statue at the top. Finally, if you have time, head to the nearby Fort San Felipe to learn about the country’s military history.

For adventure seekers

The Dominican Republic has a plethora of lush rainforests, mountains, lakes and national parks, all teeming with wildlife and explorabe on foot or by bike. On the south west of the country is Isla Cabritos National Park with Lago Enriquillo, the largest lake in the Caribbean at its centre – go trekking or jump in a boat and keep a look out for flamingos, crocodiles and endangered iguanas which you might spot in their natural habitats.

The mountainous region of Jarabacoa is also a good spot for hiking, it has the country’s longest river and is full of stunning waterfalls to explore and swim in. A little closer to the tourist hotspot of Puerto Plata, there’s also the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua if you fancy more cascading waters.

One of the most scenic parts of the Dominican Republic is the Los Haitises National Park with its breathtaking 30-metre high rock formations rising from the water. Take a boat trip from Samana to get up close to the area featured in both Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean. Samana Bay is also a great place to spot Humpback whales and the protected Ridgway Hawk which is in danger of extinction.

Highlights for the more adventurous include scaling Pico Duarte, which at 3101m is the highest peak in the Caribbean and takes three days to summit with a guide. There’s also the turquoise waters of the 14-metre deep Hoyo Azul or ‘blue hole’ –  a sinkhole at the bottom of a 22-metre cave near Punta Cana which provides a dreamy swim after a short hike through a rainforest. And while you’re in that area try out the unforgettable zip lining experience at Bavaro Adventure Park.
