If you're in search of natural wonders from treetops to shore, incredible culture and a warm welcome, Belize needs to be on your travel to-do list.

There's great food, incredible nature and wildlife, and vibrant villages, each with its own distinct personality.

And because of the country’s small size and how easy it is to navigate , there’s no need to decide between the beach and the rainforests, the reefs or the caves, the parties or the peace. In Belize, you can have it all. These are the nine places you can't afford to miss when you get there.

1. Ambergris Caye

Belize's unmissable destination

Ambergris Caye is the top place to go for visitors to Belize and the vibrant town of San Pedro is the beating heart of this unique island. This colorful caye has  hotels ranging from budget to luxe and classic Caribbean activities like snorkeling and sailing. Many of Belize’s best restaurants can be found here, as well as excellent nightlife  and shopping.

Just about every kind of traveler comes to Ambergris Caye and it’s a great hub from which to experience Belize’s water-based activities.

While you can make day trips to Maya ruins and the jungle from here, it’s advisable to switch to an inland destination for those – otherwise, you will spend a lot of time traveling.

Must-see spots include driving a golf cart up to Secret Beach, eating fry jacks for breakfast at The Fry Jack House , and grabbing a glass of rum at Havana Cigars .

As for things to do, snorkeling at  Hol Chan Marine Reserve  is one of the most popular activities in the country, but heading up north to Mexico Rocks can provide an equally fish-filled experience with fewer crowds.

Planning tip:  Ambergris Caye has a small airport that’s only a 15-minute flight from Belize’s international airport and it’s easy to rent a golf cart – the island’s quintessential mode of transportation – from there.

2. San Ignacio

Best hub for outdoor adventures

Adventure abounds in San Ignacio , a large town on Belize’s western border that embodies the country's Central American side, trading beaches for waterfalls and snorkeling for cave exploration. Much of Belize’s jungles and land-based wildlife can be found around here.

There are also many Maya ruins nearby, such as  Xunantunich and  Cahal Pech , as well as the famous ATM cave. San Ignacio makes an excellent starting point for excursions, including to other spots down the coast.

The bar and restaurant scene is on the rise and there is plenty to enjoy in the area. Head to Guava Limb Cafe for wood-fired pizza, and don’t miss the breakfast fry jacks at Pop’s Restaurant .

The overall vibe of the town feels very local, with hotels the only spot where tourists stand out among the crowd, making the bars fun for anyone craving connection with Belizeans.

Check out Soul Project below  Old House Hostel on Wednesday and Friday nights to see local musicians and artists in action.

For those craving jungle immersion, book a stay at Chaa Creek to experience the luxurious side of nature, or go further into the wilderness at Black Rock Lodge , where birders feel right at home.

Planning tip:  San Ignacio is the best starting point for travelers looking to cross the border into Guatemala to explore Tikal or continue their travels in Central America.

3. Punta Gorda

Best place for adventures away from the tourist crowds

Punta Gorda is the largest village near Belize’s southern border, a spot largely off the typical tourist track. It’s where the country’s densest jungles are found, as well as a concentrated Maya community.

This is a popular spot for adventure travelers, those who have already been to other parts of Belize, and visitors who prefer to avoid the crowds. Though it’s on the water, it’s not too beachy, so keep yourself busy with excursions out to nearby cayes or visit some of the Maya ruins nearby.

The town of Punta Gorda has a few restaurants and bars, as well as places to stay. Copal Tree Lodge is a favorite among visitors looking for a little luxury, with large rooms built into the hillside and an open restaurant area that’s often visited by howler monkeys in the morning.

There’s also a rum distillery onsite – don’t miss a chance to see how Copalli Rum gets made.

4. Placencia

Best place in Belize for beaches

The coast of Southern Belize feels like what Ambergris Caye was like before Belize became a major tourism destination, but today Placencia gets the honor of being one of the country’s top beach destinations .

This former fishing village has transformed into an upscale retreat with beach bars, top restaurants, and high-end resorts.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn is one of the most desirable spots to stay, with design, decor, and a wine selection straight from the filmmaker’s imagination. Three Iguanas is an excellent, affordable accommodation option that’s right in town.

Popular excursions include taking a boat ride out to the Silk Cayes or booking an inland trip with DTOURZ to explore the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary  – it even offers overnight trips to maximize the chances of seeing the nocturnal jaguar.

In town, visitors enjoy shopping along the boardwalk, relaxing on the sandy beach, and cooling down with a scoop of gelato from the Italian-owned Tutti Frutti .

5. Ray Caye

Best private island experience

There are hundreds of islands off Belize’s coasts to choose from and Ray Caye is one of the best. The Raye Caye resort  is developed, has modern, clean lodging and an incredible restaurant.

Visitors can either choose to stay overnight or visit for the day, though overnight guests will have access to the entire island while day guests are restricted to certain areas.

It’s worth booking a few days at Ray Caye for travelers who want to get a sense of what it’s like to live on a Caribbean island – it ensures being closer to the reef than staying on shore.

It's very relaxed here, and you can happily hang around the island all day taking soothing soaks in the warm water. If you're in search of an adventure, though, there are excursions and activities to choose from, including sailing trips and snorkeling along the island's reef.

Planning tip: Look out for yoga weekend getaways, when local yoga teacher Brice Dial takes over Ray Caye with a group for a few days of relaxation and mindfulness.

6. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Best spot for nature lovers

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is an area in Cayo near San Ignacio with lots of options for those seeking experiences in nature.

Though it doesn’t have the towering canopies of a rainforest, this unique ecosystem is still home to plenty of species of wildlife, including cougars, jaguars, acorn woodpeckers, eastern bluebirds and small critters of all kinds.

One of the best hotels in the area is another one of Francis Ford Coppola’s properties, Blancaneaux Lodge . This regal resort is perched above a river, though the onsite pool is a great place to cool off, too.

Within the reserve, visitors can soak at Río on Pools , cool off at Big Rock Falls , or book birdwatching trips and horseback riding tours. If you continue to the edge of the border, you’ll find Caracol , a Maya ruin that remains the tallest human-made structure in Belize.

Planning tip:  Though the main road has been paved to improve accessibility into the area, the volatile weather for which the tropics are known makes renting a 4WD the ideal way to reach this spot.

A highway snakes through a gently rolling landscape of green hills and fields

7. Hummingbird Highway

Best route for road trippers

Belize’s most scenic road is the Hummingbird Highway, connecting the capital city of Belmopan with the southern villages. The drive takes you through the forested mountains, between orchards and Mennonite farms, with stops for scenic cenotes and the best tamales you’ve ever had along the way.

Make time to stop at St Herman’s Blue Hole National Park to cool off, and pull over for Ms. Bertha’s Tamales for lunch – the red-and-white structure is located on the side of the highway in Middlesex.

You can't miss it, and every local knows where it is – the multiple cars surrounding it at any time are a testament to its popularity.

Because the Hummingbird Highway is situated between some of Belize’s other top destinations, it can be an ideal spot to base yourself – and the options are excellent.

The Rainforest Lodge at Sleeping Giant  immerses you in the rainforest, with an incredible view of the canopy and beyond. Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch Jungle Lodge is a family-friendly option that helped create Belize as an eco-friendly adventure travel destination and remains one of the best hotels for helping guests plan excursions of a lifetime.

Planning tip:  It’s not necessary to stay on the Hummingbird Highway to enjoy what it has to offer – just be sure to drive slowly and carefully to take in everything as you pass through. It’s a unique part of the country that makes any road trip worthwhile.

Best village for Garifuna culture

Belize is known for being diverse when it comes to culture, and one of the most unique groups in the country is the Garifuna people, who live predominantly in Hopkins , Dangriga , Placencia and areas near those villages.

Hopkins is a small, upbeat village with a long sandy beach that, while lacking in many modern trappings of life, is a unique spot to explore Garifuna culture.

One of the most popular ways to do this is by attending a drumming lesson, which inevitably turns into a dance party. The Lodge at Jaguar Reef is a great place to stay in Hopkins, but there are budget options as well.

9. Caye Caulker

Best place for laid-back travelers

Caye Caulker is an island near Ambergris Caye but with a very different personality. This is a laid-back place for backpackers, younger travelers, and those who like to go slow.

One of the most popular spots on the island is The Split , a hurricane-created channel at the northern end. This is the perfect place to grab a drink, go for a swim, and enjoy Caye Caulker’s relaxed party atmosphere.

Planning tip:  Head to Pasta per Caso , an Italian-owned restaurant with handmade pasta dishes, for a delicious meal.

16 Best Things to Do in Belize

Belize is compact, occupying about 9,000 square miles. But don't let its size throw you off. Swimmers, snorkelers and scuba divers will discover paradisiacal spots along the Belize Barrier Reef like  Hol Chan Marine Reserve  and the Great Blue Hole

  • All Things To Do

top tourist destinations belize

Hol Chan Marine Reserve Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Facing the southern edge of Ambergris Caye about 4 miles from shore, Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the oldest reserve in Belize. Its name translates to "Little Channel," in reference to a coral-filled gap in Belize's immense barrier reef. Encompassing 3 square miles, this densely populated aquatic zone is a sanctuary for stingrays, eels and nurse sharks, among other creatures.

The reserve is separated into four parts: the mangroves, the reef, the sea-grass beds and Shark Ray Alley , which was designated as part of the reserve in 1999, about 10 years after the reserve was originally established. Because of its diversity, the reserve has flourished as a hot spot for scuba divers and snorkelers. Recent travelers said Hol Chan Marine's crystal-clear waters and abundant sea life make it a prime spot for snorkeling and diving.

Ambergris Caye Ambergris Caye free

With its plentiful outdoor activities, this 25-mile-long island off the coast of northern Belize caters to the snorkeling and diving set. The island was originally inhabited by the Mayas to serve as a far-extending trade route, spanning from present-day  Mexico  to as far south as Honduras. Today, Ambergris Caye ("am-Ber-gris Key") welcomes thousands of visitors seeking easy access to the barrier reef that surrounds the island. Snorkelers and intrepid divers alike will want to explore Hol Chan Marine Reserve . Most of the diving and snorkeling shops and instructors are found in San Pedro, including the Belize Pro Dive Center , Tuff E Nuff Tours and Scuba School Belize , which all offer a variety of daily excursions. Prices vary depending on the type and length of tours, plus any certification fees for diving.

When you're not underwater, explore San Pedro, Ambergris' main town. Here you'll find beachside restaurants, lounges, shops and luxury hotels. You'll notice the difference between this tourist hub and the more urban Belize City as soon as you step onto San Pedro's cobblestone streets, which are filled with golf carts and bicycles, rather than cars.

Caye Caulker Caye Caulker free

Just about 20 miles north of Belize City sits Caye Caulker, a 4-mile-long, sun-soaked island that boasts superb diving and snorkeling spots and a relaxed tropical ambiance. Though the island is mostly uninhabited by locals, visitors flock to the restaurants, shops and hotels perched at the northern tip near the Split (the area where Hurricane Hattie allegedly parted Caye Caulker into two halves in 1961), which is now a popular spot for water sports. Along the beach, you'll also find the Lazy Lizard restaurant, a party spot known for its tropical drinks and loud music.

Like Ambergris Caye , this remote island offers a broad range of snorkeling, scuba, sailing, kayaking and fishing services to nearby sites located along the surrounding barrier reef. There are also some unique attractions like the manatee wildlife sanctuary, Swallow Caye.

Xunantunich Xunantunich

Xunantunich – pronounced shoe-nan-too-nich – is a prominent Maya site sitting above the winding Mopan River that flanks San Jose Succotz village. A mere 15 minutes from San Ignacio Town , the first entrance to the site involves crossing over the river via a hand-cranked ferry before heading uphill to the temples. The ceremonial site boasts six major plazas, with the tallest structure being "El Castillo" (the castle), which has distinctly carved friezes on the east and west sides. Towering at 130 feet, El Castillo invites fit travelers to climb up its steps and admire a bird's-eye view of neighboring Guatemala and the Mopan River below. Occasionally, travelers may spot spider monkeys dangling from tree to tree, often carrying their young on their backs.

If you're on foot, the uphill hike to Xunantunich from where the ferry drops you off can be strenuous, so it's best to take your rental car onto the ferry or join a guided group tour that will provide transportation from the ferry landing to the site. For something more off-the-beaten-path, visitors can book a guided tour to Xunantunich via horseback. The path follows that of the river, so the journey to the site is filled with natural wonders and the sounds of gurgling streams.

ATM Cave Belize-Actun Tunichil Muknal ATM Cave Belize-Actun Tunichil Muknal

The journey through Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, or the "Cave of the Stone Sepulcher," is one so extraordinary that visitors talk about it for years afterward. Venturing into this "underworld" – as the Mayas called it – requires resolve, determination and a passion for the unknown. Human skeletons, ancient Maya pottery and a network of chambers home to memories from centuries past await within the cave walls.

Hidden within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve about 20 miles southeast of San Ignacio Town , the ATM Cave beckons those who enjoy challenging excursions. After trekking through the forest for 45 minutes and crossing a river three times, travelers venture into the gaping mouth of the cave by wading in chest-deep water. Inside, you'll squeeze through cracks and crevices to enter the sacred chamber that houses the "Crystal Maiden." Allegedly a victim of a ritualistic sacrifice by the Mayas, this skeleton has developed a glimmering appearance after its bones were calcified. The human remains are said to be of a young girl, though its origins remain unknown.

Caracol Archaeological Reserve Caracol Archaeological Reserve

Caracol is one of Belize's most stunning pieces of ancient history – the Maya archaeological site is renowned for its impressive size, being the tallest human-made structure in Belize. Spanning roughly 25,000 acres, the ceremonial site houses two ball courts, a central plaza and several smaller structures. Archaeologists estimate that its population once peaked at 120,000 Mayas in the Classic Period, making it one of the largest cities in the Maya world. Its most iconic structure is its massive Caana (Sky Palace) pyramid, which stands at a towering 143 feet.

Visitors often make the hike to Caana's summit to drink in the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle. This makes a visit to Caracol not only one of historical value, but gives travelers a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of Belize's tropical rainforest.

Belize Zoo Belize Zoo

Stroll through this 30-acre zoo and you might think you've trespassed into a jungle. The small zoo houses 43 species: Jaguars roar, keel-billed toucans squawk, colorful scarlet macaws flutter and coral snakes slither across the thick forest floor. Peer through the zoo's leafy canopy trees and you may catch sight of Belize's beloved howler monkeys, or at least one tropical parrot, tapir, Jabiru stork or harpy eagle. And on the zoo's rustic path, especially during the late afternoon, keep your eyes peeled for one of Belize's beautiful native cats, which include margays, ocelots, pumas and jaguarundis.

Started as a rescue facility for animals that were used in a natural history documentary, the Belize Zoo feels like more of a wildlife preserve than a commercial zoo, according to recent visitors. Though reviewers described the zoo as small, they also praise its mission to provide rescued animals a safe place to live. Many recommended stopping here on your way to or from San Ignacio. For a more in-depth visit, heed the advice of past visitors and schedule a guided tour.

Altun Ha Altun Ha

This popular Maya site, speckled with tombs, pyramids and temples, served as a trading nexus during the Maya Empire's Classic Period (A.D. 250 to 900). Altun Ha – meaning "Rockstone Pond" in Yucatec Maya – features a human-made lagoon, which remains intact. During your visit, you'll likely encounter foxes, deer, birds and perhaps crocodiles occupying Rockstone Pond. Visitors also recommended exploring the Temple of the Green Tomb, where elite priest-kings were buried with luxurious items, such as jade, pottery and pearls. It was here that Belize's famous Jade Head, a nearly 10-pound jade carving of the Maya sun god Kinich Ahau, was discovered in 1968. Today, the artifact is referred to as "the crown jewel of Belize."

But keep in mind: If you don't like bugs, Altun Ha may not be for you. Travelers said that while the temples are amazing, the insects can be bothersome. Bring along strong insect repellant to keep the mosquitos away. Others warned that this is a popular stop for cruise shore excursions and that it can get crowded. Still, many travelers recommended making time to see this site, citing the unique opportunity to climb up with temples as a reason to visit.

San Ignacio San Ignacio free

U.S. News Insider Tip : Approximately one mile east of downtown San Ignacio is the Green Iguana Conservation Project at San Ignacio Resort Hotel. Stop by for a tour where you’ll be introduced to rehabilitated green iguanas of all shapes and sizes. – Gisselle Hernandez

Often referred to as the heart of the Cayo District , San Ignacio Town is a central hub where many adventures and activities originate. The town sits a little more than 60 miles southwest of Belize City and is home to historic landmarks that are mere minutes away, like Cahal Pech and Xunantunich Maya sites. San Ignacio is home to a welcoming people, many of whose creative talents are often displayed at the booming Saturday market. Walking down Burns Avenue, visitors will come across musicians, food vendors and artists selling their wares or hoping to trade travelers' stories.

top tourist destinations belize

Shark Ray Alley Shark Ray Alley

Located within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve , Shark Ray Alley is one of the most popular attractions southeast of San Pedro. The area, known as "Zone D" within the reserve, was a place where fishermen used to clean their catches of the day, which attracted myriad underwater residents like sting rays, nurse sharks and even the occasional manatee. Since Shark Ray Alley is a mere 15 minutes by boat from San Pedro Town, it's easy to fit in a half-day visit. Visitors can spend the morning snorkeling or diving with underwater wildlife and then return to San Pedro Town for an afternoon of exploration. As a general rule, feeding and touching the creatures is highly discouraged, and a good tour operator will remind visitors of this before allowing them to jump into the turquoise waters.

Past visitors were amazed at the abundance of nurse sharks and stingrays at Shark Ray Alley. They also commented on the clear, shallow waters and the docile sharks. For many, this was a bucket-list experience.

Great Blue Hole Great Blue Hole

Plunge into this deep blue hole and you'll discover imposing ancient stalactites (calcium deposits resembling icicles) and coral fringe. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 – along with six other areas surrounding Belize's barrier reef – the Great Blue Hole remains one of the world's most distinguished scuba sites. Created during the last glacial period approximately 10,000 years ago after a cave roof crumbled in, this blue channel contains underwater tunnels, caverns and rock formations.

You'll likely spot marine life lining the coral wall at the surface of the hole. As you descend about 410 feet below sea level, you'll discover the stalactites, but it's unlikely you'll encounter many underwater creatures (expect the occasional shark!). Even if you're not a diver, recent visitors recommended snorkeling around the hole and the nearby reefs. Make sure to visit in the dry season, with ideal weather conditions most likely in April and May.

Lamanai Lamanai

Perched on the New River Lagoon in northern Belize, this sprawling 960-acre Maya site stands masked in crocodile art. Lamanai means "submerged crocodile" in Yucatec Maya, which should give you a good idea of what you'll encounter here: artifacts depicting representations of the reptile, plus crocodiles (and iguanas) crawling along the banks of the New River to catch some sunlight.

Inhabited from about 1500 B.C. to A.D. 1700, Lamanai is the longest-occupied known Maya site in the world. Its dense compound features three Maya pyramids, the remains of a 16th-century Spanish church and several noteworthy plazas and temples established during Pre-Classic Mayan rule. You won't want to skip climbing the High Temple, and you'll also want to visit the Mask Temple, which includes ancient artifacts linked to Maya, Aztec and Olmec rulers. Just come prepared with sunscreen, light clothing, insect repellant and plenty of water.

Visitors can have an immersive experience with the vibrant Garifuna people by learning how to cook authentic dishes, such as hudut, a spice-filled coconut soup complete with fresh fish and mashed plantain.

Visitors can also try their hand at Garifuna drumming – this is a skill passed down from generation to generation within the Garifuna culture as a means of keeping their history alive. Both cooking and drumming lessons can be done at the Lebeha Drumming Center or Warasa Drum School, where for the latter, the half-day experience, including the meal, will range from $75 to $100 per person. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve free

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Gaia Riverlodge is an eco-resort close to all the stunning attractions in Mountain Pine Ridge. Stop there for lunch after taking a dip at Rio On Pools and admire the unobstructed view of the Five Sisters Waterfall below. – Gisselle Hernandez

Deep within the jungles of Western Belize lies the vast Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, a region spanning about 300,000 acres. Rife with wildlife, travelers hiking – or simply passing through – are rewarded with jaguar, ocelot, cougar sightings and more. The area is peppered with pine trees, a stark contrast with the palm trees dotting its neighboring lowlands. The slow transition into rainforest is always a sight to behold – the difference is also reflected in the cooler climate, which provides a much-needed respite from the usual tropical warmth.

top tourist destinations belize

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Comprised of more than 400 islands and nearly 9,000 square miles of mainland, Belize is home to rainforests, jungles, mountains, rivers, an extensive cave system, and many well-preserved ancient Maya ruins. Adventures on both land and sea make Belize a popular destination, and its beaches and resorts are terrific for visitors who simply want to relax and enjoy the tropical climate . To better understand the variety of ways travelers might get to know Belize, we gathered suggestions from local experts, including Patricia Johnson, head of trip design at Absolute Belize (and a Travel + Leisure A-List Travel Advisor ); David Benzaquen, general manager at Cayo Espanto ; and multiple team members with Alaia Belize . Anoushka Brandl, commercial director at Matachica Resort & Spa and Gaïa Riverlodge , and Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , shared their thoughts as well. This list of things to do in Belize features ideas for everyone, from adventurers and history buffs to foodies and travelers looking to chill out on a lounge chair in the sun.

Tour the ancient city of Caracol.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

One of the largest Maya sites in Belize, this ancient city covers about 25,000 acres in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. “You’ll marvel at the massive pyramids, detailed carvings, and remarkably well-preserved ancient artifacts,” says Johnson. “And you’ll learn fascinating details about ancient Maya culture, from daily life and religion to the ingenuity of their buildings.”

Snorkel or dive in the Great Blue Hole.

Located about three hours by boat off Ambergris Caye, the Great Blue Hole is a ring of coral encircling a huge underwater sinkhole. It’s home to colorful fish, shrimp, groupers, black tip and reef sharks, and other Caribbean marine life. Almost 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep, the Blue Hole is accessible by dive boat tours.

Fly over the Great Blue Hole on a helicopter tour.

For a birds-eye view, stunning photos, and a thrilling experience, take flight over the Great Blue Hole. Several of our experts suggested this tour, and Benzaquen pointed out that Cayo Espanto “is home to a helipad and partners with a local service provider” for convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Enjoy traditional Belizean dishes.

“I suggest checking out local eateries like El Fogon in San Pedro’s downtown for traditional Belizean food,” says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. At Matachica Resort, Brandl tells T+L, “The Captain’s Table, a social gathering for eight guests, is a five-course dinner hosted by a different resort team member each time, a true local food experience.”

Explore the underground caves of Belize.

The ancient Maya believed that caves were entrances to the underworld, and in Belize, travelers can explore a number of them by hiking, canoeing, tubing, or swimming. The experience is “an adventure you will never forget,” according to Johnson. “One such sacred cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal , which contains a remarkable collection of artifacts and skeletal remains that have been preserved over the centuries.”

Offered by many local tour companies, cave tubing is a visitor favorite in Belize. After a drive to the rainforest, there’s a short hike before you hop on an inner tube to float along an underground river through the natural caves. A guide navigates the tubes, so no paddling is required. Lunch and transportation from a central meeting point are usually included.

Feast on your own fresh catch.

According to Woollam, “Reef fishing with a beach BBQ is fun and widely popular. The fishing is quick and easy, followed by lunch cooked over an open fire. Fresh seafood with Belizean spices, marinades, and condiments has been called the best lunch ever.” Describing a Cayo Espanto excursion, Benzaquen tells T+L, “After snorkeling, you catch your own fish, conch, or lobster, then you head to an uninhabited island beach where your guide will cook your 'catch of the day.’”

Hang with locals at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye.

The secret is out, and it’s the place for all-day music, food, and drinks. “Alaia’s guests often rent a golf cart to visit Secret Beach, where a day of relaxation, paddle boarding, and jet skiing awaits,” says Jesus Oba, concierge with Alaia Belize. Nearby, The Truck Stop features a beer garden, pool with swim-up bar, movie screen, games, and live music.

Learn all about chocolate.

The ancient Maya are said to have invented chocolate, and the annual Chocolate Festival of Belize celebrates that history, local culture, and more. If you can't attend the May event, there are other options. Brandl suggests that visitors “Experience traditional Maya chocolate making at Ajaw in San Ignacio, then try the delectable chocolate brownie at Gaïa Riverlodge's Five Sisters Restaurant as a midday sweet treat.” In San Pedro, visit Belize Chocolate Company or Mahogany Chocolate .

Dive or snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.

“Our most popular and sought-after tour is snorkeling or diving among the vibrant marine wildlife in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley," says Oba of Alaia Belize. "Our guests get a thrill out of swimming with nurse sharks, giant jackfish, blue tangs, and sea turtles. Some guests overcome their fear of getting in the water and come out wanting to go back in."

Experience the Belize Barrier Reef.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and second in size after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef extends more than 180 miles along the coast of Belize. Dive, snorkel, or do as Patricia Johnson suggests: “Hop on a sailing adventure and explore the vibrant marine life, colorful corals, and picture-perfect islands along the Belize Barrier Reef.” Woollam recommends “an easygoing sunset cruise along the reef," noting that most catamarans sail for about two hours.

Browse the shops in San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye.

“As a local, one of my favorite things to do is explore the small shops, restaurants, and bars in San Pedro town," says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. "If you are an art buff or just looking to take home a souvenir, stroll downtown where small galleries, gift shops, and nifty nooks are in abundance."

Learn about the Garifuna people.

Karen Brodie/Getty Images

“Experience the culture of the Garifuna people by taking part in traditional drumming and dancing celebrations, sampling local dishes, and even staying in a Garifuna village," suggests Johnson of Absolute Belize. "You’ll come away from this experience with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the richness and friendliness of the Belizean people.” ToursByLocals offers a full-day Garifuna culture tour with convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Get dive certified.

“The proximity of the reef to the resorts makes getting dive certified an easy, safe, and fun experience," says Woollam. "If you have the desire to learn how to scuba dive, dive organizations like PADI have made classroom time a thing of the past. The theory portion of the certification is easily accessible online and can be done at home prior to arriving in Belize.”

Explore Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

Located about two hours from San Ignacio in the Cayo District of south central Belize, this reserve is home to natural pools , caves, Maya ruins, and waterfalls, including the highest waterfall in Central America, Thousand Foot Falls. Stay within the reserve and above Five Sisters Falls at Gaïa Riverlodge .

Meet new feathered friends.

Grab your binoculars and try to spot some of the nearly 600 species of birds that live in Belize. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a great place for birdwatching , and Paradise Expeditions offers a variety of expert guided tours on the mainland and cayes.

Go on a fishing excursion.

On a half-day or full-day deep sea fishing adventure, you’ll be fishing for tuna, mackerel, marlins, and more. For a more casual day of fishing different spots along the reef, you can choose reef fishing in calmer seas. Ideal for families, the latter trip includes rum punch, snacks, sodas, and lunch. Turneffe Atoll is also a favorite fishing destination.

Get active in the Caribbean Sea.

Once you’ve relaxed on the beach and you’re ready to get wet, it’s time for your favorite activity on the water. “While Ambergris Caye is known for its proximity to the reef for snorkeling and diving, our guests also enjoy other adventurous water activities, including parasailing, windsurfing, or jet skiing, which our concierge is able to organize for them,” says Oba of Alaia Belize .

Visit Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center.

The Best Places to Visit in Belize

top tourist destinations belize

Belize is small but mighty. The country boasts gorgeous landscapes, fascinating history, incredible biodiversity, and a deep and diverse culture that will attract just about any type of traveler. Whatever your interest might be, Belize is bound to have it. With so much to do and see, it might be overwhelming to know where to go or even where to start. Well, look no further: This is your ultimate guide to Belize's best places to visit.

Ambergris Caye

Courtesy of Alaia Belize

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s buzziest locale. Visitors flock to the main town of San Pedro to relax on the beach by day and party it up by night. It's home to some of the best resorts, such as Alaia Belize .

Alaia is a luxurious resort that offers an inclusive package . This resort provides extra large, family accommodating suites, and an impressive culinary menu, and has the only molecular mixologist in the country. While many might be tempted to not leave the beautiful resort, the town of San Pedro is worth exploring during the day to experience local Belizean food. WTF Food Tours takes guests around the island to the best local spots, ordering for you so you can never go wrong.

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest

Located in Belize’s Cayo District, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest is half pine forest and half jungle covering over 100,000 acres. This area is rich with wildlife, birds, and of course, plants. Only recently did the government begin building the first paved road into the area allowing travelers to explore this beautiful natural reserve. Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge is a luxury eco-resort covering over 7,000 acres of the park. Guests can hike and explore the surrounding area, as well as nearby sites like the Mayan ruins of Caracol, which are still the largest human-made structures in Belize.

Courtesy of Naia Resort and Spa

This former fishing village is now a resort hot spot that has managed to hold on to its local Belizean flare. For a relaxing getaway stay at Naia Resort , where guests are given their private beachside villa. From delicious local dishes to a luxurious spa-like oasis, Naia has it all. Naia’s location is also ideal for exploring nearby neighborhoods to get a taste of local life.

Speaking of location, Placencia is on a peninsula in southern Belize this locale gives visitors equal opportunity to take tours into the rainforest and mainland Belize as well as to the nearby Silk Caye Marine Reserve. What's more, the nearby village of Hopkins offers opportunities for visitors to experience the unique Garifuna culture.

TripSavvy/Taylor McIntyre

If you want to get off the grid and have a private island experience then book a stay on Ray Caye . You can choose between beach cabanas or villas. The honeymoon suite even boasts a private plunge pool. You can borrow a kayak or snorkel equipment by day and enjoy the island’s blue light that shines at night to attract sea life ashore. The perfect spot for wildlife life lovers as Ray Caye is a sea turtle hatching location as well as attracts large birds of prey. If you can’t spend the night there is a smaller area for daytime visitors to enjoy a pool, a beach, and a restaurant where they grow the majority of the greens on the island.

Caye Caulker

Consider Caye Caulker Ambergris' smaller, chiller neighbor. If you're more interested in a good book by the beach than bar hopping then head to this more laid-back alternative. No cars are allowed on Caye Caulker and everyone gets around on bikes or golf carts. This forces a slower, more relaxed way of life. So lie in a hammock and enjoy an ocean view with a fruity drink. If you’re still looking for a bit of adventure Belize’s barrier reef is still only one mile away!

San Ignacio

San Ignacio is the capital of the Cayo District and is known as the adventure capital of Belize. It has a small-town charm, offering local food markets and an Iguana sanctuary. But San Ignacio’s true appeal is its location. It is the perfect jumping-off point for any in-land adventure Belize has to offer. The Cayo District is famous for rainforest excursions or a day trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. There are also several Mayan ruin complexes around San Ignacio including Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. Travelers can enjoy cave tubing or the truly adventurous can venture out to the ATM Cave.

Belize City

Belize City holds the country’s only international airport and services the port for all visiting cruise ships. It’s a shame that the majority of travelers are just passing through as Belize City holds a massive amount of history as well as culture. The Historic Belize City Tour and the Museum of Belize help visitors understand Belize's past and present. Animal lovers will be interested in the Belize Zoo, which focuses on rescued native species and provides them with large open habitats to roam. There are also many nearby attractions like the Altun Ha Ruins or the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

Hummingbird Highway

The Hummingbird Highway is one of four highways in Belize. But it is by far the most scenic drive in the country. It stretches 53 miles from the capital Belmopan to the town of Dangriga. The highway cuts through gorgeous views of forested mountains and tries to find what the locals call the “sleeping giant” hidden in the landscape. Along the way, you can also enjoy pit stops at caves, cenotes, and tons of local food options.

Lighthouse Reef

The Great Blue is one of Belize’s most famous attractions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest sinkhole in the world. Lighthouse Reef is made up of the surrounding cayes that border the sinkhole. You can visit the reef by boat or through a fly-over tour. Snorkelers and scuba divers flock to the great blue hole to see what they can find. The most visited Caye of Lighthouse Reef is Half Moon Caye, which is home to over 4,000 red-footed boobies.

Getting to this cave is not for the faint of heart. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, better known as the ATM Cave, was discovered in 1989 and offers a unique look into ancient Mayan rituals. Within this cave, visitors will find the remains of several sacrifice victims as well as ancient utensils, pottery, and other artifacts. However, getting to the cave is not a walk in the park. Visitors must go with guides and will have to complete a somewhat strenuous hike, multiple river crossings, swimming through submerged caves, squeezing through very tight spaces within those caves, and traversing up rock faces. And that’s only one way! If you’re physically up for the challenge, this is an incredibly unique experience and look into the past.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Located near Ambergris Caye, Belize’s barrier reef is the second-largest coral reef structure in the world. While The Blue Hole is the most famous attraction in this barrier reef there is so much more to explore. Home to over 100 species of coral and 500 species of fish, you’ll also likely see nurse sharks, sea turtles, and sting rays. How Chan Marine Reserve welcomes visitors looking to snorkel, scuba dive, fish, or swim in sharks in its Shark Ray Alley.

top tourist destinations belize

Belize’s connection to the Maya civilization dates back to 1,500 B.C., with numerous archaeological remnants scattered throughout the country.

Captivating sites include the hilltop ruins of Xunantunich , the riverside site of Lamanai , and the remote Caracol , which houses Belize’s tallest man-made structure.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Mopan River, Xunantunich is one of the most visited Maya sites globally.

Dating back to the Classic Era (200-900 A.D.), the site comprises approximately 25 temples and palaces.

Xunantunich was the first Maya ruin opened to visitors in 1950, primarily due to its proximity to San Ignacio.

Its name, meaning “Stone Woman” in Mayan, stems from folklore about a ghostly female figure frequently spotted at the site. An ongoing archaeological study here provides a wealth of historical insight.

As you unearth the strategies of ancient warfare and appreciate the stunning panoramic views from the main pyramid El Castillo , you’ll be transported back in time.

For a distinct experience, also consider exploring the Mayan underworld, Xibalba , through the many caves scattered throughout Belize.

One such sacred cave, Actun Tunichil Mukna l, houses a remarkable collection of preserved artifacts and skeletal remains.

With each site narrating a unique story about Maya history and culture, guided tours are highly recommended to dive deep into the ancient civilization’s fascinating aspects.

They’re a must-visit for history buffs and anyone interested in archaeology.

6. Stepping back in time at Altun Ha

top tourist destinations belize

Altun Ha , a prominent archaeological site in Belize, was once a major ceremonial center of the Maya civilization, with an occupation period dating from 1100 BC to AD 900.

Considered one of the most easily accessible Maya sites from Belize City, Altun Ha attracts many eager explorers.

Stretching over about 3 square miles (8 square kilometers), this ancient Mayan city houses 13 structures and two huge plazas.

The most iconic of them is the Temple of the Masonry Altars, at a height of 60ft (18 meters), the tallest structure at Altun Ha.

This temple was used for religious ceremonies, and the discovery of altars at its top may suggest that offerings were made to the gods.

Interestingly, the Temple of the Green Tomb, a dominant pyramid of Plaza A, housed around 300 artifacts ranging from skins and jewelry to stingray spines.

Visitors can climb the temples and enjoy a panoramic view from the top. It’s a step back in time, making you part of Belize’s historic past.

Remember to bring plenty of water and wear sun protection since the sun and insects can be harsh.

Guided tours are available that unravel the city’s vibrant history, making it a unique educational experience for families and history enthusiasts.

Despite seeing more visitors, it is more accessible compared to other sites like Caracol Ruins, making it an easy half-day trip. It’s a must-visit for anyone intrigued by ancient civilizations and their practices.

Cahal Pech, which translates to “Place of Ticks,” may not have the most appealing name, but the site was an important node in trade routes in its time, overlooking San Ignacio and Santa Elena.

Its strategic location and its view over these areas make it a fascinating spot for history lovers.

Exploring the ruins is a delight in itself: the shade throughout much of the complex is a welcome change in the heat, and the structured brick ruins stand as a testament to the architectural prowess of the Maya.

The walk uphill may be a bit challenging for some visitors, but the panoramic view at the top is worth it!

It boasts the iconic Great Blue Hole, a striking underwater sinkhole that is popular among divers. With a rich Mayan history, Belize is a cultural feast with several significant archaeological sites, such as Altun Ha and Lamanai.

It’s also famous for its biodiversity, with numerous wildlife sanctuaries and the only jaguar reserve in the world, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

From this tropical paradise, you can expect delightful Belizean cuisine that features a melting pot of flavors from various cultures.

Belize City , the country’s biggest city, is the cultural, financial, and industrial hub known for its colonial architecture.

Known as a cultural melting pot, Belize is home to diverse peoples and cultures, including Garifuna, Maya, Mestizo, East Indian, Chinese, Creole, and Mennonites.

Here are all my Top Belize Travel Tips .

What is the best time to visit Belize?

The best time to visit Belize is during the dry season, typically from November to April.

During these months, the weather is more pleasant, with lower humidity, little rainfall, and comfortable temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C).

This is the best time for diving or snorkeling, but it also happens to be the peak tourist season. Consequently, accommodations and activities may feature higher prices during this period.

However, if you’re seeking to experience the best of Belize’s underwater and overland adventures, these months offer the most favorable conditions.

June to November is considered the rainy season, but it can also be a good time to visit for fewer tourists and lower prices.

Is it safe to travel to Belize?

top tourist destinations belize

Yes, Belize is generally safe to visit.

However, like any travel destination, it’s always important to remain aware of your surroundings and exercise common-sense safety precautions.

While Belize City has some areas known for higher crime rates, tourist regions such as San Pedro, Placencia, and Caye Caulker are considered safe.

It is advisable to keep your valuable items secure and avoid isolated or poorly lit areas after dark.

Travel with trusted tour operators and always inform somebody about your plans if you’re venturing off on your own.

The locals are typically very friendly and helpful to tourists, making Belize a welcoming destination for travelers.

How can I get around Belize?

Belize offers a host of transportation options depending on your comfort, budget, and destination.

  • Buses are the most economical and efficient way to navigate through Belize City and to farther towns.
  • Taxis are easily found on virtually every street corner, but make sure to pick one with a meter and license.
  • For island hopping and visits to the reef, ferries run daily from Belize City Ferry and Water Taxi Terminal to Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
  • Water taxis, or ferries, are essential to accessing the numerous off-coast cayes. The boats often feature reasonable prices and comfy rides.
  • For those looking to explore the mainland more extensively and flexibly, renting a car is a good option, but it is essential to bear in mind that some remote areas might require a four-wheel drive.

Re-purposed US school buses are commonly used for public transport. While these might look basic, they provide a real taste of local life and help create memorable travel stories.

In Belize City and on the islands, walking can be a great way to explore and immerse yourself in the local ambiance.

Consider using online booking services for bus or boat tickets around Central America and Mexico.

Remember, transportation in Belize can vary by area, and it’s vital to plan it out depending on your itinerary.

14 Top-Rated Things to Do in Belize

Written by Lavanya Sunkara and Joni Sweet Updated Apr 6, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Belize may be petite sized, but few other destinations offer such a variety of landscapes and things to do as this Central American country. Dense jungles and ancient sites on the western edge, and the Caribbean side's gleaming cayes (islands) and their proximity to the second largest barrier reef in the world, make Belize a mecca for eco-travelers and adventure seekers.

Explore Maya sites, swing from the tree tops, and jump into refreshing pools under waterfalls in the Cayo District. Swim with sharks and snorkel with myriad marine life in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Check off diving the Great Blue Hole from your bucket list. Animal lovers will delight at sightings of jaguars, pumas, and howler monkeys in nature reserves, and birders will get a thrill at seeing exotic red-footed boobies and frigate birds on remote cayes.

The only Central American English-speaking country, Belize makes it easy to explore its natural wonders, with roads connecting its biggest cities of San Pedro , San Ignacio, and the capital city of Belmopan and other villages. Daily flights operate to the popular attractions , like Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye . You can drive from one end of the country to the other in just two hours.

Don't forget to pack your boots, bathing suits, and reef-safe sunscreen, and to help plan your vacation, check out our list of the top things to do in Belize.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Belize boasts underwater marine life that's second only to the Galápagos Islands. Hol Chan Marine Reserve , one of seven reserves in Belize located within the UNESCO Site of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve system, is the best place to visit for snorkeling and diving.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve is part of the 600-mile-long MesoAmerican Reef System, the second largest of its kind in the world. A short boat ride from San Pedro in Ambergris Caye will bring you to the reserve, where you can jump into the warm waters for incredible underwater views.

Southern stingrays, turtles, and an array of colorful fish glide gently beneath the waves among the colorful coral reefs. In 2018, the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve system was taken off the endangered world heritage list after dedicated efforts were made by the government to curb oil drilling, overfishing, and coastal overdevelopment.

Nurse sharks at Shark Ray Alley

At the popular Shark Ray Alley in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, visitors get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with nurse sharks and stingrays. The four- to five-foot-long nurse sharks are bottom feeders and are generally harmless to humans, as long as they aren't encroached upon.

Shark Ray Alley came to be when local fishermen used the area to clean off their daily catches, attracting nurse sharks and rays to the morsels left behind. Now, whenever they hear the boats, they come in droves for a meal.

When you visit Shark Ray Alley, your guide will attract the sharks with small fish as you swim near them from a safe distance. Rest assured, you can still get a good view from the boat if you choose not to jump in. Snorkeling and diving activities in the reserve are heavily monitored, so make sure to go with a company that has permission to bring visitors.

Aerial view of the Great Blue Hole

Once a cave with massive stalactites and stalagmites, it collapsed underwater when the sea took over. It now sits 450 feet below the surface at The Great Blue Hole, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This submarine sinkhole, with a patch of deep blue water surrounded by shallow turquoise waters, is located in the Lighthouse Reef Atoll .

Beneath the surface, those with a scuba diving license can experience natural wonders of ancient underwater tunnels, bizarre limestone formations, fringing coral, sharks, and sea life of all kinds. Although Belize enjoys year-round warm weather, the best time to go diving is in dry months, between April and June, when the weather conditions are ideal.

Red-footed booby at Half Moon Caye

You can combine a trip to the Great Blue Hole with a stop over at Half Moon Caye atoll, located in the southwest corner of Lighthouse Reef Atoll. This World Heritage Site is a must-visit for birders who can gaze upon rare red-footed booby birds and the magnificent frigate birds nesting in the Ziricote thicket. You can hear the cacophony of screeches and squawks coming from the island as you approach.

A viewing platform accessible by a trail lets you get up close to these birds. You can see the booby birds starting from December, and their chicks from March until August. The caye is also known for its crystal-clear surrounding waters, making snorkeling a marine lover's dream come true.

Ambergris Caye

As the largest caye (island) in Belize, Ambergris offers a number of things to do. Whether you want to relax in a hammock on a beautiful beach, go fishing or sailing, or take a food tour, there's something for everyone in Ambergris Caye.

The main town of San Pedro , with golf carts (its main source of transportation) zooming by on its narrow streets, provides a good base for visitors, with seaside resorts and PADI operators taking guests to The Great Blue Hole and Shark Ray Alley. Some of the best beaches in Ambergris Caye lie on the southern shore, fronting resorts like Ramon's Village Resort and Banyan Bay Suites .

Caye Caulker

Arguably the most charming of all the cayes in Belize, the five-mile-long Caye Caulker, located 20 miles north of Belize City, is a laid-back spot that sees a lot of backpackers, budget travelers, and sun worshippers. Choose to stay a few days, enjoying fresh ceviche, shopping at local stores, and taking day trips to nearby islands. Don't be surprised to see stray dogs running alongside golf carts and bikes.

The most happening place to visit on the island is the Split, created as a result of Hurricane Hattie in 1961, which divided the island in two. Today, the Split is a small public beach and the best place to mingle with other travelers, eat delicious food, and savor the warm waters as you snorkel or swim. It's a common sight to see visitors on their beach chairs and benches by the water enjoying refreshments.

Caana pyramid at Caracol Mayan ruins

The heart of the Belizean Mayan world lies in the western part of the country in the Cayo District , which is home to several pre-Columbian archaeological sites. Visitors can walk among the ruins of Xunantunich and Caracol , boasting the two tallest structures in the country.

Xunantunich, near the border of Guatemala, features an impressive 127-foot El Castillo pyramid and sits on a ridge overlooking the Mopan River. It was once a ceremonial center for the Mayan people and features a complex of temples and plazas. Climb to the top of the pyramid for panoramic views of the surrounding jungle.

Caracol, the mother of all Belizean Maya sites, sits in the foothills of the Maya Mountains in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve . At its height, it may have spanned more than 70 square miles and supported a population of 120,000, larger than the current population of Belize City. Without any source of water, the people survived on rain water and agriculture.

The site now is so off the beaten path that you won't find many amenities, so come prepared and allocate time to wander the plazas and pyramids (among which is Sky Palace, the tallest man-made building in Belize at 143 feet). Base your stay in San Ignacio, a small town with affordable jungle lodges and wonderful food.

Big Rocks Waterfall

Located in the heart of the Cayo District is the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve , established in 1944 to preserve Belize's pine forests. Adventure lovers will find tons of activities here, starting with exploring the Río Frio Cave , where a 65-foot entrance greets visitors, and a river runs through the center of the cavern. Take the well-maintained path along the river, admiring the stone formations, and stop by at the sandy beach at the other end to enjoy a picnic lunch.

The reserve contains the highest waterfall in Central America at Thousand Foot Falls , which in reality is 1,600 feet. This ribbon of water originating from the Maya Mountains cascades down the Thousand Foot Falls into the creek below. If you are lucky, you may spot the rare orange-breasted falcon in the surrounding vegetation.

Other popular waterfalls, like the Five Sisters Falls and Big Rock Waterfalls, cascade into pools where you can swim and cool off on hot days. Add some thrill to your trip with ziplining at Calico Jack's , which also features an extreme swing that's only for the dare devils.

Jaguar in Belize

Belize has the biggest population of jaguars in the world, and that's because a combined 250,000 acres have been set aside for these wild cats to thrive. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary in the Stann Creek District of south-central Belize, together with Bladen Nature Reserve , provide habitat for the endangered jaguar. Cockscomb sanctuary encompasses 128,000 acres of rainforest in the Maya Mountains.

Go on an evening guided tour to spot these elusive wild cats, and you may also spot other nocturnal animals like puma, ocelot, jaguarundi, and margay. During the day, the sanctuary is an ideal place to spot scarlet macaws, keel-billed toucans (the national bird), vultures, and hawk species. Be sure to bring your insect repellent, and your intrepid spirit.

Keel-billed toucan at the Belize Zoo

If your schedule doesn't allow you to see the country's animals in the wild, the Belize Zoo is your next best bet. Located along Mile 25 George Prince Highway, the 29-acre zoo hosts many native species. The zoo started in 1983 to provide a home for animals used in documentary films about tropical forests.

There are no iron bars here; visitors get to see animals in enclosures that are as close to their natural habitats as possible. Around 125 animals representing 48 species, from jaguars to howler monkeys, live at the zoo. The Belize Zoo also operates as a rehabilitation center for rescued and orphaned animals.

Official site: https://www.belizezoo.org/

Rappelling into the Black Hole Drop

If Caracol is the mother of all Maya sites, the Black Hole Drop in the western part leads the list for caves in Belize. The edge of Actun Loch Tunich, a massive sinkhole in the Maya Mountains, sits 300 feet above the basin and 200 feet above a forest canopy that grows from within.

Rappelling down to the bottom of the sink hole is not for the faint of heart, but if you are up for it, trained caving guides help you descend using a system of rappelling ropes. You'll have an exhilarating rush as you make your descent and pass through the verdant forest canopy. Some tours offer a picnic lunch at the bottom of the drop, which you'll need as the climb up involves climbing over rocks and ladders.

Keep in mind that reaching the sinkhole requires an intense hike through the jungle, so be prepared for a full day of adventure.

Mayan chocolate making in Belize

Belize is known as the cradle of chocolate, as evidence showed Mayan Indians were fond of drinking a chocolate beverage daily. The Toledo District in southern Belize is the center of most of the chocolate production today. Visitors can combine a visit to a Mayan site at Lubaantun ruins with learning about the role of chocolate in the Mayan culture. Visit a cacao farm and see how the beans are grown and transformed into chocolate.

Eladio's Chocolate Adventure in San Pedro Columbia village offers an eco-tour of the organic production of cacao, and combines it with delicious tastings and a Mayan-style lunch served at their hilltop restaurant. During the three-day annual Toledo Cacao Festival in May, you can taste local food and have a trip to local cacao farms.

Paradise Beach in Placencia

Between taking excursions to Mayan ruins, going on underwater adventures, and searching for the elusive jaguar, you'll also want to make some time for rest and relaxation on your Belize vacation – and there's no better place to chill out than on the Placencia Peninsula. This laid-back region features tranquil, golden-sand beaches flanked by gently swaying palm trees and colorful villas that will instantly put you in vacation mode.

When you've had your fill of beach time, head into town to see Belizean creations displayed at Lola's Art Gallery and Art n Soul Gallery. Tourists also love the agricultural activities offered at Bunches of Fun Banana Farm Tours , which will immerse you in a working banana farm and give you the chance to taste freshly fried banana chips. You can also soak up harbor views, and shop for souvenirs at the Placencia Municipal Pier.

Entrance to Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave in Belize

For thrill-seekers, one of the top things to do in Belize is exploring Actun Tunichil Muknal (the Cave of the Stone Sepulcher). This sacred attraction is where the ancient Maya would conduct spiritual rituals and hold elaborate ceremonies. Evidence of these practices can still be seen in the cave's sacrificial altars and artifacts today.

You'll need to take a 45-minute jungle hike and cross three rivers to reach the ATM camp. Then, you'll pop on a helmet and headlamp and begin your journey though parts of the three-mile-long cave , walking along an underground river, ducking beneath crystalline stalactites , and scaling ladders . The adventure will bring you up close to jade axe heads, pottery shards, and other artifacts.

The tour peaks with a glimpse of the famous Crystal Maiden , an intact skeleton of a teenager who was sacrificed to the gods. The now-calcified bones have taken on a sparkling appearance. It's an experience like none other.

10 Best Places to Visit in Belize

' src=

Occupying one of the last, remaining unspoiled places on earth just south of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Belize is a beautiful Caribbean getaway where tourists can laze away on white sandy beaches, dive in the Western Hemisphere’s largest barrier reef, hike through lush jungle, and explore ancient Mayan ruins all in one vacation.

An English-speaking country with a multicultural population, Belize is best known for its tropical beauty and outdoor adventures. The hundreds of cayes and coral islands are also among the best places to visit in Belize , with their stunning beaches and world-class diving sites.

10. Belize City [SEE MAP]

Belize City

Belize City is the largest city in Belize. It is located on a small peninsula at the mouth of the Haulover Creek. It was the capital city until flooding and other damage from a hurricane prompted the government to relocated to Belmopan in the 1970s. Most tourists use Belize City as a transportation hub and spend little time in the city. With that said, Belize City is still the cultural center of Belize and offers a relatively large number of cultural attractions.

9. Hopkins [SEE MAP]

Hopkins

The small village of Hopkins, south of Dangriga and stretching along a bay, is probably best-known as the cultural center of the Garifuna population in Belize. The Garifuna are the descendants of African, Island Carib, and Arawak people. The town hosts its own national holiday, Hopkins Day, and welcomes people for their celebration on Garifuna Independence Day as well, they do this with drum ceremonies that can last till early hours in the morning. Garífuna continues to be widely spoken here and the village is a great place to learn more about this unique culture.

8. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary [SEE MAP]

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Jaguar Reserve, is one of the biggest, protected destinations in Belize. Although roughly 60 of Belize’s 700 jaguars are believed to live in the sanctuary, the chances of seeing one are very slim.

However, it’s an ideal environment for plant-spotting, bird viewing or seeking out other wildlife, and the trail system is the best developed in any of Belize’s protected areas. For those who have the time, it’s also possible to take a four- or five-day hike and climb to the summit of 1120 meter (3670 foot) high Victoria Peak.

7. Tobacco Caye [SEE MAP]

Tobacco Caye

Tobacco Caye is a small island located at the northern end of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, approximately 16 km (10 miles) from Dangriga. Travelers to this island can choose from 6 different small and modest lodges in which to enjoy some rest and relaxation.

Because Tobacco Caye is located in a protected marine reserve, it is known for being an excellent spot for shore diving. Over the years, this cay has earned a devoted following among backpackers and snorkel and scuba enthusiasts.

6. San Ignacio [SEE MAP]

San Ignacio

Located about 35 km (22 miles) from Belmopan, San Ignacio is a friendly, relaxed town offering a pleasant climate, good food, inexpensive hotels and frequent bus connections. Surrounded by rivers and forested hills, it’s an ideal base from which to explore the Mayan ruins and nature reserves in the region.

San Ignacio is also an important transit town en route to or from Guatemala. The town is usually referred to as Cayo by locals, the same word that the Spanish used to describe the offshore islands.

5. Ambergris Caye [SEE MAP]

Ambergris Caye

The largest of Belize’s several hundred islands, Ambergris Caye is a dreamy, tropical place where shorts and flip-flops are the dress code, golf carts are the mode of transportation, and lazing away on sandy white beaches is the primary activity.

A short plane flight or ferry ride from Belize City, Ambergris Caye is one of the best places to visit in Belize because it presents the ultimate Caribbean getaway with classic beaches, world-class accommodations, fabulous dining and ultra relaxation.

4. Placencia [SEE MAP]

Placencia

A long, narrow peninsula of sandy white beaches hugging Belize’s Caribbean coastline, Placencia is a popular destination for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Placencia comprises the three villages of Maya Beach, Seine Bight and Placencia Village. The most popular attraction in Placencia Village is the paved pedestrian path known as “The Sidewalk,” a strip lined with shops and numerous bars and restaurants.

Most of the activities in Placencia are centered around the peninsula’s natural scenery. The Placencia Lagoon is a great place to kayak or canoe along the wetlands to spot wildlife like manatees, dolphins, crocodiles and birds.

3. Caracol [SEE MAP]

Caracol

Situated high on the Vaca Plateau, 500 meters (1650 feet) above sea level, Caracol is the largest Maya site in Belize. It was once one of the largest ancient Maya cities, with an estimated population of about 150,000, more than twice as many people as Belize City has today.

Its greatest period of construction occurred between 484 AD and 889 AD when over 40 monuments were built. The largest pyramid in Caracol is Canaa (Sky Place), at 43 meters (143 feet) it is still the tallest man-made structure in all of Belize.

2. Caye Caulker [SEE MAP]

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker may not offer the beautiful beaches of Ambergris Caye, but it’s casual atmosphere, cheap prices and abundance of bars and restaurants draw numbers of backpackers and tourists who are looking for a break from traveling around Central America.

A small island accessed by small plane or water taxi from Belize City, Caye Caulker is not a place for sightseeing, but rather, a place to simply hang out and relax. The most popular activities on Caye Caulker are diving and snorkeling. The island’s closeness to Belize Barrier Reef offers some of the best diving spots in the Caribbean.

1. Belize Barrier Reef [SEE MAP]

#1 of Best Places To Visit In Belize

The Belize Barrier Reef is a 300 kilometer (190 miles) long section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It is Belize’s top tourist destination, popular for scuba diving and snorkeling and attracting almost half of all its tourists.

A large portion of the reef is protected by the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, which includes 7 marine reserves, 450 cays, and 3 atolls. The reef also includes the Great Blue Hole, the most famous dive destination in Belize.

12 Best Belize Tourist Attractions

The best Belize tourist attractions include a large number of Mayan ruins in addition to its famous cave tubing.

Belize is both an ecotourism destination as well as a popular cruise destination at Belize City on the Caribbean coast. It also is one of the few Caribbean destinations to promote caving as a major tourist attraction.

Another famous thing to do is the barrier reef, which is 185 miles long. Islands lie between the reef and the mainland, creating many opportunities for watersports, especially diving and snorkeling.

1) Cave Tubing

Cave tubing is a unique tourist attraction in Belize and one of the top excursions in the Caribbean . Cruise and resort visitors will take a somewhat lengthy ride into the countryside, followed by a hike through the rainforest to reach the Sibun River Cave Branch.

Once there, they jump into uniquely beautiful lime green water, pop through a tube and float down the river and through dark caves for about 1.5 hours. The caves include the location of Mayan rituals and cave drawings. Excursion prices range from $50 to $100 or more depending on amenities.

We found it was one of our favorite attractions in the Caribbean and a great family experience.

2) Belize Zoo

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center sits on 29 acres of tropical savanna and displays more than 170 animals. The animals represent 45 species that are native to Belize. The zoo acquires animals that are rescued, orphaned, rehabilitated, born there or sent there. The zoo is 31 miles from Belize City and attracts nearly 70,000 visitors a year.

3) Altun Ha

The Maya site is near Rockstone Pond Village in the Belize District. It is about 55 minutes north of the Belize City cruise port .

Altun Ha is the most excavated Mayan site in Belize . It was a major ceremonial center and a trade center that connected the Caribbean coastline with other Maya centers in the interior of the country. The site has two main plazas with some thirteen temple and residential structures. Excursion prices start at $95.

The Mayan ruins of Lamanai, more than two hours northwest of Belize City, are among the most famous and easily visited archeological sites in Belize. Most tourists experience the “place of the crocodile” by taking a guided boat trip up the New River to where Lamanai is located on the New River lagoon.

Its situation near an abundant and stable water source may explain why this city was inhabited longer than any other Mayan site (up until the 18th century).

Crocodiles are a prominent subject of sculptures and carvings from Lamanai and were considered sacred by the city’s inhabitants. Although they were undoubtedly more common during Mayan times, they are still occasionally seen on New River boat trips.

Excursion prices of $130 are common.

5) Actun Tunichil Muknal

Actun Tunichil Muknal is one of the most popular Mayan burial sites in western Belize.

It is a cave system several kilometers long that consists of several large chambers. It contains four skeletons, stoneware and ceramics left by the Maya. One famous skeleton of a young girl has a sparkling appearance as a result of the cave’s natural processes.

Visitors will hike about 45 minutes to reach the cave and spend several hours exploring and wading through waters inside and outside of the cave. The site is an hour and 45 minutes southwest of Belize City.

6) Crooked Tree Lagoon

A pleasant, tropical lake with prominent birdlife, the Crooked Tree Lagoon is an excellent site in Belize for folks interested in birding and wildlife viewing during a pleasant boat ride. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in the area of the lagoon and animals such as caimans and iguanas are also frequently seen.

It’s close enough to Belize City (a 40 minute drive from the airport) to visit as a day trip but far enough from the city to experience friendly, relaxed and rural Belize. Most tour operators can arrange boat tours of the lagoon or visitors can simply show up in the village of Crooked Tree and arrange one on their own.

7) The Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary or Jaguar Preserve

Jaguars are the largest wild cat in the Americas and have become rare in many parts of their range. Belize has always been fortunate to have a dense population of these shy, big cats but during the 1970s and 1980s hunting was reducing their numbers.

After field studies by Alan Rabinowitz showed that jaguars did not present a threat to people or livestock in Belize and that their numbers were declining, the Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the jungles of the Maya Mountains to help protect these beautiful cats. Although jaguars occur in the preserve, visitors will be lucky to see one because of their timid nature.

They will certainly come across a wide variety of other rainforest animals, however, especially so if visiting with a local guide. The preserve can be a bit hard to get to but will be well worth it for people interested in experiencing one of the most remote and wildest rainforests in Belize.

8) Canoeing, rafting, and kayaking the Mopan River

The Mopan River flows out of the northern part of the Maya Mountains in Belize and eventually runs into the Belize River. As it rushes out of the mountains, this scenic, tropical waterway becomes dotted with class two and three rapids.

Various tour operators run guided rafting and kayaking trips to experience these quick and exciting stretches of the Mopan, but canoes are also available for folks looking for a more relaxing time on the river.

They can be rented in the nearby town of San Ignacio to float and paddle easily accessible and calmer sections of the Mopan. Although this river doesn’t pass through pristine jungle, the scenery includes quaint, riverside farms, big Green Iguanas in the trees, and screeching flocks of parakeets.

9) Belize City

Museum of Belize, built as a colonial prison in the mid-1800s, has a permanent exhibit of ancient Maya pottery as well as displays on the history of Belize City and Belize’s Maya history.

Baron Bliss Lighthouse Monument at Fort George Point, standing over the harbor entrance, was built from money donated to the country by the 5th baron of Portugal. Baron Bliss was entombed in front of the lighthouse, which he designed himself before his death.

St John’s Cathedral is the oldest building in Belize as well as the oldest Anglican Church in Central America. Slaves built the cathedral in the 1800s from bricks brought to Belize as ballast in the hulls of ships sailing from Europe. After the church was the site for coronation of several Indian Kings of the Mosquito Coast.

10) The Blue Hole

The most famous dive site in Belize is The Blue Hole in the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, about fifty miles east of Belize City. The hole is a nearly perfect circle 1,000 feet wide and 412 feet deep that was formed when the roof of a cave fell in about 10,000 years ago. The Blue Hole is so large it is visible from outer space.

11) Caracol

Caracol is the largest-known Maya center in Belize. The largest pyramid in Caracol is 143 feet high and the tallest man-made structure in the entire country. The site is located in the Chiquibul Rainforest.

12) Xunantunich

This major ceremonial center has six large plazas and is surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. The most prominent structure located at the south end of the site is a pyramid 130 feet tall. “El Castillo” was the tallest man-made structure in Belize until the discovery of “Caana” at Caracol. “El Castillo” also is noteworthy for the reconstructed frieze on the temple. The site is more than two hours west of Belize City.

From the vibrant streets of Belize City to the serene islands of the Cayes, Belize’s unique position in Central America offers something for every type of traveler, making it an ideal destination for your next adventure.

1. Fly Over the Great Blue Hole

things to do in belize blue hole

Discovery Channel rated The Great Blue Hole as one of the most amazing places on earth, and we agree. While scuba diving is on many a diver’s bucket list to take a deep dive down into its more than 600-foot depths, a flight over the Blue Hole is truly out of this world.

As you soar above this natural wonder, the stunning contrast of deep blue waters set against the vibrant turquoise coral ef is as breathtaking from the air as it is mysterious from the surface. This once-in-a-lifetime scenic flight offers a unique perspective of one of the world’s most extraordinary geological phenomena.

best things to do in belize shipwreck

We booked a private charter over the Blue Hole with Tropic Air in San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye to see the astonishing Great Blue Hole. This hour-long flight took us over the beautiful sinkhole in the middle of the sea, and we had a bird’s eye view of the sprawling urban center of San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye, Secret Beach, and its coastline. We then flew over Caye Caulker to view the famous Split from above before moving on to see the underwater landscape of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and some of the 400 Cayes that are scattered throughout the Belize Barrier Reef in Central America.

It doesn’t matter whether you scuba dive it or fly over the Great Blue Hole; there’s no mistaking the allure of Belize’s most famous attraction. You can book your Blue Hole Tour here at TropicAir’s website.

About the Blue Hole

things to do in belize blue hole tour

The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole that lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, which is a small atoll located 70 kilometers. from the mainland and Belize City.

Originally made famous by Jacques Cousteau in 1971, the Blue Hole is the iconic bucket list scuba diving trip. If you want the bragging rights of diving the Big One, most scuba dive trips to the site will also include a second dive to a nearby reef wall offering abundant marine life.

The Great Blue Hole is one of the natural wonders on earth, stretching 300 meters (1000 feet) across, and plunging 124 meters (600 feet) deep.

Booking a Flight to the Great Blue Hole

Our private charter made four glorious passes around the entire Blue Hole. Giving us two passes each way for ample time to take it all in.

Flights to the Blue Hole vary depending on the group size and time of year, but our flight was $2500 Belizian dollars, which is $1250 USD for two people. It is a bargain for an hour-long flight to one of the most awe-inspiring views on earth. Flight with Tropic Air can be booked from Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.

2. Snorkel At Shark Ray Alley

best things to do in belize shark ray alley

Another one of the top Belize attractions is the famous Shark Ray Alley. 20 years ago, we went scuba diving through the crystal-clear Caribbean waters of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. It was a day swimming with nurse sharks and sea rays that we always remembered. So when we returned to Belize, snorkeling here was at the top of our list. It didn’t disappoint. There are now many more sharks and rays since our first visit to Belize as the word got out among the wild nurse sharks that they may be able to get a treat from the tour operators.

best things to do in belize snorkeling

The waters off the coast of Belize offer some of the best and most accessible snorkeling in the region, particularly if you are hoping to see Nurse Sharks, Spotted Rays, sea turtles or even Manatees.

We booked our tour with Wanderlust Sailing and Snorkeling on Caye Caulker. You can also visit Shark Ray Alley from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

History of Shark Ray Alley

best things to do in belize sharks

The sharks were initially drawn to the area by fishing boats where local fishermen would clean their catch in the calm waters of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, discarding the remnants into the sea. This practice inadvertently turned the area into a natural feeding ground for nurse sharks and stingrays, who were attracted by the easy meal.

Over time, these creatures began to frequent the area, recognizing it as a reliable source of food. As the sharks and rays became regular visitors, they transformed Shark Ray Alley into a unique and exciting spot for snorkelers and divers, offering a rare and safe opportunity to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. Seeing the nurse sharks swim through the clear waters without a care in the world is truly spectacular. Shark Ray Alley has become a major attraction, contributing significantly to Belize’s ecotourism and conservation efforts.

3. Take a Private Sailing Trip

things to do in belize sailing

If you don’t want to get in the water with nurse sharks, never fear, you can book a sailing trip through the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Sailing through the Belize Barrier Reef is unlike other sailing trips. You can see the water change before your eyes, and you can spy nurse sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles directly from the bow of the boat.

We booked our sailing trip with Wanderlust Sailing and Snorkeling , who had the sails up once we left The Split and enjoyed fresh fruit, rum punch and fun music as we took in the views of this great barrier reef.

About the Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching over 300 kilometers. It is the second largest barrier reef in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

  • Trip Information:
  • Location: Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye
  • Season: Visibility is best in dry season, mid-November to April, but manatees prefer to visit in the summer months when the water is warmer.

4. Pamper Yourself at Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge

best things to do in belize hidden valley wilderness lodge

We spent four nights at the ultimate luxury Resort in Belize just outside San Ignacio. It sits in the center of 7000 acres of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve and offers and puts visitors in the lap of luxury while offering fine dining, impeccable service and design, and incredible villas complete with plunge pools and rainforest showers, all while offering eco-tours in a jungle setting.

The. resort has been recently renovated with chic designer furniture and special attention to detail. We stayed in Villa #1, which starts at $600 per night and has its own plunge pool, two outdoor showers, an indoor rainforest shower, two fireplaces, a kitchen, a living room, and the most amazing outdoor sunroom with hammock, lounge chairs, and dining table for romantic jungle meals.

Fine Dining

best things to do in belize fine dining

The menu at Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge was designed by the number one chef in Belize, Sean Kuylen who represents the country around the world. He has taken local Maya and Belizian flavours and infused it with international cuisine. I am not lying when I say that the salad is the best I have ever had. It is an explosion of flavour and textures that I couldn’t get enough of.

I am not the best at writing about descriptive food experiences, but if you could read my mind, you will know that the … restaurant at Hidden Valley is an experience to remember on your Belize itinerary. Check rates and availability here.

5. Relax at El Ben Cabanas, Caye Caulker

best things to do in belize El Ben Cabanas

Caye Caulker is often touted as a place full of budget travelers and expats who visited the key and never left. However, Caye Caulker North is starting to develop luxury hotels and is attracting high-end clientele to its quieter and more reserved shores.

We stayed at El Ben Cabañas on Caye Caulker North and loved our stay in this beautiful property that houses waterfront bungalows with swaying palm trees overlooking the water. It has two swimming pools, and the best fine dining on the two sides of the island combined.

The resort offers free water shuttles to Caye Caulker Town on a regular schedule. We loved going into Caye Caulker to enjoy the nightlife, but having the luxury of leaving the party atmosphere for a quiet, luxury retreat. Check rates and availability.

best things to in belize the split

Caye Caulker was split into two parts by Hurricane Hattie in 1961. The fierce storm carved a narrow channel known as The Split, creating a distinct north and south division of the island.

The Split is not just a geographical landmark but fun hub for partying, watching the sunset and for day cruises to come in and enjoy a rum punch at the legendary Lazy Lizard bar.

Shuttles leave on demand throughout the day to take people to Caye Caulker North for $5 USD per person. You have to ride this ramshackle shuttle at least once. It’s a rite of passage.

6. Chill Out on Caye Caulker South

best things to in belize caye caulker

Located just a 10-minute flight from Belize City, Caye Caulker is one of most popular chill-out places in all of Central America. It was the first place we chilled out in 2003 and when we visited again last month, it was the first place we flew into.

Colorful, low-key, and downright funky, Caye Caulker laughs in the face of conventional beach holidays. You won’t find a proper beach on the limestone coral island, but swaying palm trees line the sandy streets, and most visitors agree that swimming in the Split is a more than adequate substitute. There is a makeshift swimming pool with lounge chairs right on the side of the split.

And not to worry, if it’s a cold beer with toes in the sand that you crave, you can do just that at more than a dozen “cool spots” across the island.

best things to in belize dave and deb sailing

If a couple of days swaying in a hammock, cooling off in the Caribbean, and sipping on ice-cold Belikin beers is just too relaxing for your tastes, rent a kayak and explore the mangroves of the western shore, try your hand at stand up paddle boarding, eating at the local restaurants or booking a snorkel or scuba day trip exploring some of the best sites along the Belize Barrier Reef.

Day tours to Belize City, Ambergris Caye and to see the marine life of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve can be booked at tour operators lining the sandy streets of the island.

7. Join a Food Tour

what to do in belize taste of caye caulker food tour

One of the best ways to get acquainted with the food scene, nightlife, and cocktails of Caye Caulker is to join A Taste of Caye Caulker food tour. We had the best time seeing the top bars and places with the best sunset views as we ate our way through the island.

This was one of the best food tours we’ve ever taken, as our guides knew everyone, and there was no way we were leaving hungry. We tried traditional Belizian foods paired with a cocktail as we learned about life on the island and made new friends. The Taste of Caye Caulker Food Tour is an excellent introduction to the Cayes and trust me, by the time yo are finished, you’ll want to move to Belize!

8. Take a Jungle Tour to Waterfalls

what to do in belize waterfalls

A trip to the jungle is a must after playing in the tropical waters of the Cayes of Belize. San Ignacio is the jumping off point for jungle adventures in Belize and there are plenty of tours can you can book.

We stayed in Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge, which had its own jungle adventures. Located within 7000 acres of Jungle, this tour was one of the best things we did outside San Ignacio. We spent a day exploring hidden pools and waterfalls.

The waterfall located on their property is the same one that Bher Grylls rapelled down when he took a trip to Belize. Their reserve is one of the best places to go bird watching in Belize and if you have a chance to stay here for a night or two, we highly recommend it.

Other Jungle Tours

Mayflower Bocawina National Park is a jungle paradise for outdoor adrenaline seekers, offering rappelling, zip lining, and hiking experiences through lush tropical rainforest.

Few places offer the chance to fly through the air (on Belize’s longest zip line), stand face-to-face with cascading falls, and cool off in idyllic pools while surrounding yourself in a jungle paradise. Do you like rare and colorful birds? Mayflower Bocawina’s also got some of the best birding in Belize. Truly a bucket list adventure and one of the best things to do in Belize!

  • Location: Stann Creek District, near Dangriga and Hopkins
  • Season: Best time to visit is dry season, mid-November to April.
  • Lodging & Outfitters: We recommend  Bocawina Rainforest Resort & Adventures .
  • Cost: Varies, depending on activities and length of stay.

9. Play in the Waters of Ambergris Caye

things to do in belize parasailing

While we stayed on Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye is the larger and more popular of the two Cayes. You can easily travel between both via water taxi, ferry or by flying. We booked flights with Tropic Air. The flights are only 5 minutes long and cost approximately $50 per person.

The main town on Ambergris Caye is San Pedro, a bustling town with hundreds of golf carts zooming through the streets. During our day here, we not only booked a flight over the Blue Hole but also had the chance to go parasailing over the Belize Barrier Reef.

Belize Parasail Ltd . offers parasailing adventures from Boca del Rio Resort where visitors have an hour long tour enjoying a cruise along the coast of Ambergris Caye before strapping in to a sail to soar high above the blue waters. They picked us up in San Pedro Town and we enjoyed a sightseeing drive to the far end of the island where we boarded a speed boat. Parasailing is fun for the whole family when planning your Belize vacation.

10. Eat At El Fogon Restaurant

where to eat in Belize El Fogon

It is one of the most famous and oldest restaurants in Belize. El Fogon Restaurant is a staple in San Pedro Town and if you want authentic Belize cuisine, this is the place to go.

belize cuisine

Owned by the Arceo-Eiley who bought this prime chunk of land more than 35 years ago and turned it into a thriving restaurant in the early 2000s. It is family-owned and operated, and now her daughter is running the restaurant, serving Belizian stews, soups, and traditional dishes from the fire pit and firewood stove.

It is packed with people and lively entertainment and if you visit Ambergris Caye for a day or a week, eat here!

11. Tour the Mayan City of Caracol

places to visit in Belize caracol

While Mexico and Guatemala may be more famous for their Mayan history, Belize has ancient Maya cities to explore without the large crowds. HIstory buffs will love exploring the ruins of Belize and Carocal is a great place to start. We were picked up from Hidden Valley resort by Maya Walk Tours for a two-hour drive deep into the heart of the jungle to explore the ancient Maya civilization of Caracol.

They are currently paving the road to Caracol, making it easier to visit the Mayan Temple in the middle of the jungle, so the time to visit is now. There were only five other groups at the Maya City during our visit and we had the chance to walk through the nearly deserted ancient Maya ruins free from crowds.

Caracol, which translates to “The Snail” in Spanish, was one of the most powerful Mayan cities, rivaling even Tikal in neighboring Guatemala. At its peak, it boasted a population of over 100,000. Today, visitors can stroll through the site and can even climb the Mayan Temple of Caana (Sky Palace), which remains one of the tallest structures in Belize.

Caracol is surrounded by a lush rainforest home to abundant wildlife, including howler monkeys, spider monkeys toucans, and jaguars.

12. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

places to visit in Belize Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Caracol’s location in the Cayo District allows for easy combination with the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, or indulge in caving adventures in the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave (ATM Cave). We didn’t get the chance to do this as the rains came in making driving and caving treacherous.

If you want to do adventures when visiting Belize such as cave tubing, the ATM Caves, or other cave tours, make sure to avoid the rainy season and instead visit during the dry season from December to May. However, we visited in December and thanks to climate change, it was still raining long after the season ended.

13. Go Shopping in San Ignacio

places to visit in belize san ignacio

San Ignacio is a jumping-off point for Belize jungle adventures, and it is an excellent place to make a base and do some shopping.

Located in the heart of Belize’s lush Cayo District along the banks of the Macal and Mopan Rivers, it is a culturally rich destination that offers a perfect blend of adventure and heritage. Known as the eco-tourism capital of Belize, San Ignacio is a gateway to ancient Mayan ruins, including the Carocal and the renowned Xunantunich and Cahal Pech, offering a deep dive into the mysteries of Mayan civilization.

Tours you can book from here include river tubing, horseback riding, and caving adventures, such as the famous Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (ATM Cave).

We also picked up some souvenirs at San Ignacio’s outdoor market, brimming with local crafts. The town’s proximity to natural reserves like the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve allows for easy access to stunning waterfalls and wildlife sightings.

14. Swim & Tube Through Sacred Mayan Caves

places to visit in Belize ATM Caves

Sadly, we didn’t get to explore the ATM cave as there was heavy rains during our time in San Ignacio that flooded the caverns. Luckily, Dave Baxter of AwayGoWe, who contributed to this past, did have the chance. Taking a day trip from San Ignacio to Actun Tunichil Muknal (or ATM Cave) is hands down one of the most popular inland activities and the best things to do in Belize. And it’s easy to see why.

Trekking deep into the Mayan underworld combines adventure, intrigue, history, and Mayan mysticism, not to mention subterranean swimming, hiking, climbing, and crawling.

ATM Cave Tour Information: Location: Day Trip from San Ignacio Cost: From $95 per person on  GetYourGuide

Crystal Cave

During the rainy season you’ll have a better chance to visit the Crystal Cave as it is a dry cave. However, be prepared to crawl through narrow passageways. There are many other lesser-known water caves to explore throughout the rest of the country as well, where you can go cave tubing and take cave tours to see other Maya civilizations.

Some of our other favorites include  Barton Creek Cave  (which involves taking a boat through the jungle to the mouth of the cave), cave tubing through  Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve , and exploring  Blue Creek Cave  outside Punta Gorda in Southern Belize.

15. Placencia

places to visit in Belize Placencia

During our first visit to Belize we spent a lot of time in Placencia. This time we didn’t make it, but we still wanted to mention it as it is an excellent place to visit in Belize. You can still visit the Belize Barrier Reef for world class scuba diving and snorkeling from Placencia and unlike the Cayes, it has wonderful sandy beaches.

Visitors can also enjoy kayaking through the mangroves. Placencia’s narrow main street is lined with colorful boutiques, local art galleries, and inviting eateries and offers a taste of Belizean culture and cuisine.

There are multiple lobster festivals in Belize, but many consider  Placencia’s Lobsterfest  a tail above the rest. Held every June since 1998, Lobsterfest offers a diverse selection of lobster and other dishes, with Creole, Maya, Garifuna, Indian, Chinese, European, and North American influences. And it’s hard to beat the beach location. And be sure to book lodging in Placencia well in advance, as accommodation fills up fast for the ever-popular event.

More Things to Do in Belize by a Local

This post was originally written by Dave Baxter who spent a year in Belize living, working, and exploring the width and breadth of this one-of-a-kind destination. They had the opportunity to go beyond the tourist attractions and hit on a few more things that we didn’t get the chance to see. Here are their discoveries in Belize.

16. Snorkel at Mexico Rocks and Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary

what to do in belize snorkel with manatees

While  Hol Chan Marine Reserve  gets much of the attention and notoriety for sharks, rays, and sea turtles,  Mexico Rocks,  a bit farther north, is a less crowded option, offering the chance to see all of the above without the crowds.

For a rare chance to snorkel near the elusive manatee, head to the mangroves of Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary. For snorkel trips in Belize, we recommend having 1-3 days of flexibility in your trip itinerary. Belize is an amazing snorkel and dive destination. However, weather conditions (even in “dry” season) can be quite unpredictable from day to day.

17. Get Up Close & Personal with Howler Monkeys

what to do in belize baboon sanctuary

While visiting the Ancient Maya ruins, you will hear deep guttural growls of the Black Howler Monkey, but they may be difficult to see. Yet, you could easily stay for a year and never catch a glimpse of one of the largest primates in the Americas. But, visiting the Community Baboon Sanctuary near Belize City exponentially increases your chances of not one but multiple spottings of the sociable primate along with the entire family!

Residents have banded together to create a protected forest area for their beloved “baboon” and welcome visitors daily with guided tours.

  • Visit Information:
  • Location: Bermudian Landing, about 45 minutes west of Belize City
  • Duration: 1-2 Hours
  • Cost: US$7 entry fee

17. Ride Horses on Jungle Trails

A short distance from Hopkins in Kendal,  Outback Trails  offers a unique opportunity for riders of all skill levels to explore Southern Belize’s mountains and streams by horseback.

Spend the day riding miles of pristine jungle trails over clear mountain streams and under towering cohune trees. You can also combine your ride with a climb to a lookout tower or a jungle hike to a remote waterfall and swimming hole.

  • Location: Kendal, near Hopkins
  • Duration: 3+ hours.

19. Experience Southern Belize’s Top Festivals

belize festivals

If you find yourself in Southern Belize in November, don’t miss  Battle of the Drums , one of the main events of  Garifuna Settlement Week  in Punta Gorda. See some of the best Garifuna-style drummers on the planet compete for the top prize. Groups come from across Belize, as well as Guatemala , and Honduras, to display their talent and skill for a packed venue.

Every May, Toledo’s famous  Cacao Fest (Chocolate Festival)  celebrates the region’s economic and cultural connection to cacao, showcasing local producers’ best chocolate products.

Belize Brewing Company even gets into the spirit of the season with their much anticipated Belikin Chocolate Stout brewed just for the occasion.

Each year, the festival begins in the center of Punta Gorda with chocolate, local crafts, and entertainment, and finishes at the nearby Mayan ruins of Lubaantun.

20. Feed Your Chocolate Addiction in Toledo District

belize chocolate tours

For many families in Belize, cacao farming has been a way of life for generations. Fortunately for the rest of us, family traditions have translated into tasty (and sustainable!) family businesses, particularly in the Toledo district, where local farmers produce some of the highest quality chocolate in the world.

Ixcacao, San Felipe

Ixcacao  in San Felipe offers a unique opportunity to not only indulge in a variety of local chocolate products from the Cho family farm, but experience the entire process from start to finish with members of the family as your hosts.

Cotton Tree Chocolate Factory in Punta Gorda

If you can’t get out to San Felipe or attend the Cacao Fest (mentioned above), be sure to check out  Cotton Tree Chocolate Factory  in downtown Punta Gorda for your chocolate fix as well as insight into the local chocolate making process.

21. Explore the World’s First Jaguar Preserve

wildlife sanctuaries jaguar preserve

Don’t count on spotting a jaguar at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. But rest assured, around 200 of these stealthy cats are scattered across the immense and densely forested reserve.

What you can count on is seeing colorful native bird species and other tropical jungle creatures across dozens of kilometers of hiking paths. Tube the river, explore the remains of aircraft wreckage hidden in the jungle, or hire a guide and trek to the top of Victoria Peak.

Cockscomb also offers a variety of lodging options from the very basic to the comfy and quirky. Check out  our complete guide  to visiting the sanctuary, including details on hikes and lodging.

  • Experience Information:
  • Location: Near Maya Centre, 20 km southwest of Hopkins
  • Season: Year-round

22. Island Hop to Uninhabited Caribbean Islands

island hoppin gbelize

Kicking off our list is a one-of-a-kind 3-day sailing adventure to Dangriga with stops at remote and unknown islands along the Belize barrier reef.

By day, enjoy gliding through crystal clear waters under sail, stopping along the way to access some of the best snorkeling and fishing areas along the Belize reef.

Stay overnight on uninhabited cayes in beach camping accommodations with the option to upgrade for one night to an over-water bungalow.

Our own trip with Ragamuffin was one of the highlights of our time in Belize and highly recommended for anyone looking to get away from it all while experiencing a true paradise.

  • Tour Information:
  • Location: Starts in Caye Caulker and ends in Dangriga. The trip cannot be done in reverse.
  • Duration: 3 days, 2 nights
  • Cost: $400 All-Inclusive ($450 over Christmas/New Years)

23. Take a Boat Through the Jungle to an Ancient Mayan City

maya city of lamanai belize

Once a major ancient Maya city, Lamanai was inhabited for 3,000 years until the early 20th century. The sprawling archaeological site is impressive in its own right, but the spectacular setting and unique way of accessing steals the show.

Lamanai is situated among dense rainforest overlooking a picturesque lagoon where the deafening growl of Howler Monkeys and the exotic echoes of native birds can be heard throughout the site.

To top it all off, the ancient Mayan city is accessed by a one-hour boat ride through the jungle. Makes for an unforgettable day trip from Belize City or Orange Walk, or an even more memorable overnight excursion staying in one of the nearby jungle lodges.

V isit Information: Location: Near Orange Walk Cost: Varies, depending on length of trip and whether you book a package tour. Arranging a Package Trip: For the best rates, inquire with your guesthouse in Belize City or Orange Walk.

If you wish to book in advance,  Lamanai Belize Tours  is one of the most respected operators.

24. Scale Belize’s Rugged & Remote Victoria Peak

victoria peak bealize

With a height of just 3,675 feet (1,120 m), Victoria Peak might not be the tallest mountain you will ever hike, but it might be the most strenuous, most spectacular, and most rewarding!

Located deep in the heart of Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the multi-day mountain trek takes 3-5 days round trip to complete, depending on conditions and personal ability, and must be done with a licensed tour guide, which can be hired from the nearby community around Cockscomb.

Expect long hiking days, high temperatures and humidity, biting insects, and lots of elevation gain (and loss). Your reward? Stunning views from the top of Belize and an experience like none other.

Trip Information: Location: Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary Season: The trail is open from February 1 – May 31 (dry season) Cost: Inquire locally.

25. Get Down with Garifuna Culture

belize culture

By far, one of the most memorable things to do in Belize is spend time with the locals. While it’s nearly impossible to get a true sense of “Belizean culture” (there are, after all, five very distinct ethnic groups), the culture and practices of the  Garifuna  people may just be the most accessible to short-term visitors.

In addition to just plain having an incredibly fascinating history, the Garifuna are darn proud of it too. And are keen to share it with others, through food, music, dance, and celebrations.

And there might be no better place in Belize for visitors to experience Garifuna culture than  Hopkins  and  Punta Gorda . Every November, Punta Gorda hosts the world-renowned Battle of the Drums, a signature event of  Garifuna Settlement Week  which is fervently celebrating throughout Southern Belize.

If you’re interested in learning how to drum from a master, or simply want to learn more about Garifuna music and dance, we recommend booking a drum lesson at  Warasa Garifuna Drum School  in Punta Gorda.

26. Belize Zoo

We don’t normally include zoos on any list of things to do, however, Belize Zoo is much different than other zoos in the fact that It only houses rescued animals. Touted as the best little zoo in the world, the Belize Zoo

We don’t normally include zoos on any list of things to do, however, Belize Zoo is much different than other zoos in the fact that It only houses rescued animals. Touted as the best little zoo in the world, the Belize Zoo a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. It only houses rescued or wildlife confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade.

The 6 best islands in Belize you need to visit

Visiting the islands in Belize is one of the best things to do. There are some bucket list activities to experience, no matter where you head. The islands in Belize are unlike anywhere we’ve been, from snorkeling to scuba diving, partying or taking it slow, there’s something for everyone and every budget.

1. Caye Caulker, one of the chillest islands to visit in Belize

The motto in Caye Caulker is simple – Go Slow. And it’s something that everyone takes to heart. You’ll often hear people saying it to each other when they’re going too fast on their bikes or golf carts. You’re only mission while in Caye Caulker is to chill out, enjoy the barefoot island and soak in the Caribbean vibes.

The best thing to do in Caye Caulker is to find a beach bar and hang out in the water. Or to go to the Northside beach and enjoy the quiet time – it’s one of the best beaches in Central America . This is why Caye Caulker is a must on your Belize itinerary .

The Lazy Lizard

If you’re looking to get more active, Caye Caulker also has a slew of activities to offer. From snorkeling the reef around the island to windsurfing, sailing tours to the nearby marine parks, or cruising around at sunset. If going slow is not in your DNA, don’t worry because you’ll have so much to do on this tiny island.

If you’re looking for a place to stay while in Caye Caulker, we recommend El Ben Cabanas . Located on the north island, these cabanas are a great place to hang out. The hotel has 2 pools, a pool bar, restaurant where they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cabanas are comfy and spacious. There are many other hotels on the south island as well, if you’re looking to be a little more central.

The chill vibes and crystal-clear waters make Caye Caulker a must-see destination in Belize.

2. San Pedro, the party island to explore in Belize

For those who love some lively entertainment and want to party, San Pedro is the island for you . When planning your Belize itinerary , add this destination to your list if you’re looking to spend the night dancing away, or if you want to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle of a larger island.

San Pedro is the older sibling to Caye Caulker. The crowds here are a bit older, prices are a bit higher, and the nightlife is louder. People here get around in golf carts and the vibes are much more hectic than in Caye Caulker. Sometimes, it may even be hard to pick which island to visit: Caye Caulker or San Pedro . Both have something unique to offer.

Aerial view San Pedro

Being much larger than Caye Caulker, San Pedro has more variety. You’ll find a ton of different restaurants here, as well as different accommodation options. We recommend staying at The Watermark, a newly built hotel that is just past the bridge. It has a rooftop pool which is the perfect place to catch the sunset.

If you’re looking for things to do in San Pedro, you won’t be disappointed. Here, you can quickly get to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. You can also head to Secret beach, the most famous beach in Ambergris Caye and one of the nicest in Central America . There are also a ton of dive shops and activity vendors all around the island.

For anyone who wants to party all night and hang out all day, San Pedro is the perfect place in Belize. It has the perfect balance of action and relaxation.

3. Lighthouse Reef, the perfect place to visit in Belize for scuba diving

For those who love to scuba dive, Lighthouse Reef is the place to be. This is the atoll where the Great Blue Hole is located. So if diving in this famous sinkhole is on your Belize bucket list , then Lighthouse Reef should be on your list of best islands to visit in Belize!

Lighthouse Reef is located about 2 hours away by boat from Belize City. There are 2 resorts on Lighthouse Reef – Huracan Dive Lodge and Izta Resort. We spend 4 nights here with Huracan, diving the nearby reefs, and as avid scuba divers, we can confidently say that this was the best dive resort in Belize . It was also one of the best diving experiences we’ve had anywhere in the world.

Scuba diving the Blue Hole

For scuba divers, Lighthouse Reef should be at the top of your list of places to visit in Belize, especially with Huracan diving , and here’s why: All the dive sites are minutes away. The local dive sites are only 2-5 minutes by boat. The Great Blue Hole was about 15 minutes away, and Half Moon Caye, another incredible island that is a protected area, is 20 minutes away.

Being so close to all these dive sites, we were often the only ones there, which meant we got to enjoy every single dive with our small group. Plus, the waters were super clear, the marine life was fantastic and the staff was amazing. There’s really not much more you could ask for. In fact, this was like being on a liveaboard, but with none of the inconveniences that come with it.

4. Glover’s Reef, a unique island to discover in Belize

Another far and distant atoll that should be on your Belize itinerary is Glover’s Reef. This island is about 1.5-2 hours away from Dangriga. It’s what Island dreams are made of. If you love to scuba dive, snorkel, kayak, paddleboard or hammock surf, this is the place for you.

While in Belize, we had a fascination with visiting these distant atolls. The reason was simple – they connect you to nature unlike anywhere else! To be in the middle of the ocean, vulnerable to the elements, and living life to Mother Nature’s beat was such a great experience.

Canvas tents on Glover's Reef with Island Expeditions

We got to spend 4 nights on Glover’s Reef during our one-week adventure with Island Expeditions , and it was such a great experience. We would spend our days exploring the nearby reefs and soaking in their beauty. We would kayak out to a nearby coral reef. Drop our anchors and snorkel around checking the marine life there. We got to scuba dive on Long Caye , a famous dive site on Glover’s. We even went on a night excursion, where we got to see so many octopuses in their natural habitat. We got to explore so much and it was an unforgettable experience!

During our time with Island Expeditions , we spent our time on South West Caye on Glover’s Reef, where they have their camp. Here, we slept in canvas tents and got to make some new friends we won’t forget anytime soon. Such a great experience that confirmed that Glover’s Reef should be on your list of must-see destinations in Belize.

5. Tobacco Caye, the postcard island in Belize

When people think of Belize, one of the most iconic images that come to mind are the overwater bungalows on a tiny island surrounded by the most beautiful turquoise waters. This is Tobacco Caye – what Belizean dreams are made of.

Tobacco Caye is located about 30 minutes away by boat from Dangriga. This tiny island is one of the coolest places to be. There’s not a ton to do here, so it’s the perfect place to unwind and soak in the Belize vibes.

Tobacco Caye Paradise with Island Expeditions. Discount code for Island Expeditions

We got to visit Tobacco Caye with Island Expeditions and it was such a welcomed treat! We stayed in the overwater bungalows, which are simple but comfy. We got to kayak around the island and check out the sunset at the other end of the island. Meals were shared family-style with the staff and it was such a fun time!

There’s not too much to do on Tobacco Caye. You can go scuba diving with the dive shop on the island, kayak around snorkel and hammock surf. There are 2 bars where you can hang out, the furthest one is the perfect place to catch the sunset. You can also see the sunrise on your deck.

Life is simple on Tobacco Caye, which is why it’s the perfect place to visit in Belize.

6. Half Moon Caye, a protected island to visit in Belize

Half Moon Caye is a beautiful protected island located in the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. It’s a hard destination to get to, but it’s very much worth the detour, especially if you’re looking to go off the beaten path in Belize.

Half Moon Caye, an old coconut farm, is known for its natural beauty and its wildlife. Its main inhabitants are the red-footed boobies. These sea birds use the island as a nesting spot after mating. During the right season, you’ll see hundreds of them here nesting and raising their chicks.

Exploring Half Moon Caye

Since the island is protected, this is a prime location for scuba diving and snorkeling in Belize. We got to visit Half Moon Caye during our time with Huracan. Unlike other dive shops in Belize, we got to spend a whole day on the island, taking in its beauty. We also go to do 3 dives, including the renowned Half Moon Caye Wall, famous for its coral and marine life.

You can also sleep on Half Moon Caye as it’s one of the destinations that Island Expeditions goes to. Having slept on 2 other remote islands with Island Expeditions , we can only imagine how epic this experience must also be!

Some scuba and snorkel shops in Caye Caulker and San Pedro offer trips to Half Moon Caye, so if you’re excited to visit this beautiful island in Belize as a day trip, that is also possible.

3 amazing towns to visit in Belize

Belize is not just an island paradise. In fact, there are a few towns to add to your Belize itinerary where you can get a different flavor of what Belize has to offer. From quiet beach towns to more lively ones, as well as the adventure capital of Belize, there is something here for every interest and every budget.

7. Placencia, a great town to visit in Belize

Placencia is a great place to visit if you’re looking for laid-back vibes, some of the most beautiful beaches in Central America , nearby cayes to explore and some of the nicest places to stay. We got to explore so many parts of Placencia and enjoyed it so much, which is why we recommend adding this to your Belize vacation.

Located on a peninsula near the south of Belize, Placencia is known for its beaches and is a great place to explore the reef. Some of the best things to do in Placencia , other than chill is to head out to Laughing Bird Caye or Silk Caye, national parks, where you can snorkel and scuba dive. The Cayes are also perfect for day trips as they also have lovely beaches.

Laughing Bird Caye near Placencia, scuba diving in Belize

If you don’t head out to the Cayes, you can also hang out on the beach in Placencia town. The beach near the pier is the nicest one of all, soft sand, calm waters and sheltered from the wind. The long strip of beach is also nice, but the winds tend to get a little brutal. You can also walk along the world’s narrowest street. This street, right along the beach, is lined with restaurants, stores, vendors and art galleries. It’s a great place to get a feel for this little town.

The best place to stay in Placencia is just outside of town, at Naia Spa and Resort . This is one of those hotels you immediately fall in love with. The cabanas on the beach, the amazing restaurant, the pool, the kind staff and the beautiful spa. There’s also a gym facility and yoga studio. They also have 3 shuttles a day into town, so you can go back and forth if you want. But we warn you, once you come to Naia, you won’t want to leave.

8. Hopkins, a town in Belize with plenty of Garifuna culture

Another wonderful place to explore in Belize is Hopkins. This small town is known for its beaches and its Garifuna population. If you’re looking to get immersed in the Garifuna culture, this is one of the best places to do it, considering it’s not too much off the beaten path.

Hopkins is a town located between Dangriga and Placencia. It’s home to a great cacao culture, as there are many farmers here. They have plenty of places where you can learn how to make it and learn all about the ancient cacao culture. We had a great time making (and eating) chocolate at Ch’eil cacao makers.

Another great thing to do in Hopkins is hanging out at the beach. It’s the perfect place to chill out, soak in the sun and enjoy the vibes. This town is also great for learning about the Garifuna culture. Belize has the second-largest Garifuna population in Central America, and many of them call Hopkins home.

Hopkins, a great place to visit in Belize

The Garifuna people are descendants of West African, Central African, and Arawak and Carib indigenous people. The Garifuna have their own unique language, music, dance, and cuisine. In Hopkins, you can experience their traditional culture, like drumming, dancing and try their food.

Hopkins is also close to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, or what they call the Jaguar Reserve. There are plenty of hikes here, and waterfalls to explore. We’d say you might even see some jaguars or pumas, but these are nocturnal creatures, so the best you’ll see here are plenty of birds!

Hopkins is a great place in Belize to spend a few days. Chill vibes, beautiful beaches, and plenty of cacao. Its vibes are more laid-back than Placencia , so if you’re looking for a quiet getaway, this is the place for you!

9. San Ignacio, your best town in Belize for adventures

No trip to Belize would be complete without a stop in San Ignacio. This is the adventure capital of Belize after all… Ok, we named it this way, but you’ll quickly understand why!

San Ignacio is perfectly located near so many of the best attractions in Belize. First, it’s super close to the ATM Cave – this is probably the #1 thing to do in Belize. This archeological site is a full day of climbing on rocks, wading through water in a cave, and exploring ancient Mayan artifacts. Basically, you get to be Indiana Jones for a day. But we’ll tell you more about the ATM Cave shortly.

Rio Frio Cave in Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve in San Ignacio

Near San Ignacio, you also have many of the best ruins and archeological sites in Belize, like Xunantunich, Caracol, Cahal Pech, Barton Creek Cave, and so many more. There are nature reserves, hikes, caves and waterfalls. You can spend all day enjoying the great outdoors. There are also plenty of conservation efforts for the iguanas and birds of prey that you can also support there.

Basically, regardless of what you’re into, you’ll find something amazing to do in San Ignacio. Which is why it’s on this list of the best places to visit in Belize.

Iconic landmarks to visit in Belize

10. great blue hole national park, a bucket list destination in belize.

Would this list of amazing places in Belize be complete without including the Great Blue Hole? Whether you want to scuba dive it, snorkel in it or fly over it, the Great Blue Hole is a must! This massive underwater sinkhole is over 300 meters (984 feet) across and over 120 meters (394 feet) deep.

We had the pleasure of scuba diving in the Great Blue Hole while staying with Huracan Dive Lodge on Lighthouse Reef. It was one of the coolest diving experiences ever. Not because there was plenty of fish, but because of the amazing rock formations – huge stalactites that drop down low.

We were also with snorkelers who saw plenty of fish while being not so deep in the water. Again, the best thing about going with Huracan is that our snorkelers and divers were the first ones to arrive on the scene and to explore the waters here.

As for flying over the Blue hole, we would recommend it as a last resort because flying, even a short 1-hour flight, is not great for the environment. Although seeing the Great Blue Hole from above must be an incredible sight, it would be best to opt for snorkeling or scuba diving first.

Either way, the Great Blue Hole is one of those amazing bucket list places in Belize that should be on everyone’s list.

11. ATM Cave, a must-see landmark in Belize

Another must in Belize is the ATM Cave. Located near San Ignacio, these caves are absolutely insane! Part adventure hike (think Indiana Jones) and part archeological site, the ATM Cave is an amazing wonder!

Home to many artifacts, the ATM cave is a full-day adventure. You’ll get picked up in the morning, and taken to this cave. You’ll have a bit of a hike to do, crossing a few creeks, before you make it into the cave. Here, you’ll be climbing on rocks, wading in water that is chest deep, and exploring some of the coolest cave structures ever.

During your exploration, you’ll see some pottery, but also some human remains. The star attraction is the Crystal Maiden.

All tours to the ATM Cave are guided . The ticket price will include your entrance fee for the cave, as well as transport and lunch. Cameras and cell phones are not allowed in the cave (as a few people dropped them and damaged the artifacts.

We would not be exaggerating if we said that visiting the ATM caves was one of the most thrilling days we’ve had in Belize.

12. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, a perfect outdoor destination in Belize

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is one of the best places to explore near San Ignacio. Here, you’ll find caves, hikes, waterfalls, rock pools and so much more. You can spend a whole day exploring the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve and still not see enough of it.

We had the pleasure of visiting the Reserve on a beautiful day. We recommend following our route as it was one of the best ways to see the highlights of the park.

First, start with the Rio Frio Cave. This huge cave was an archaeological site, although no artifacts are still in it. Instead, you will find these cool rock formations – stalactites and stalagmites, huge rocks and a little water source with cold water.

Big Rock Waterfall in Mountain Pine Ridge in San Ignacio

Next, head to the Rio On Pools where you can set up camp, claim one of the rock pools and enjoy your lunch there. Chill out at the pools and cool off. Because the next stop is a bit of a trek to get to.

Once you’re done at the pools, head to the highlight of the Forest Reserve – the Big Rocks waterfall. The trek to get to the falls is not so easy, but very doable. The steps are a bit precarious and steep, but the hike is about 10-15 minutes long. The payoff is a beautiful waterfall, refreshing rock pools and beautiful scenery!

The Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve has so many other gems to explore above these three highlights, which is why it’s on this list of amazing destinations in Belize. If your time in San Ignacio is limited, we recommend taking a tou r so you see all the highlights in the Moutain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

13. Bocawina Rainforest, your adventure destination in Belize

Bocawina Rainforest is the coolest place to stay in Belize. If you love adventure, birding and being surrounded by nature, look no further than the Mayflower Bocawina Rainforest Park. Located about 30 minutes inland from Dangriga, and close to Hopkins, the rainforest is your gateway to adventure.

As part of our Island Expeditions tour , we got to spend 3 nights at the amazing Bocawina Rainforest Lodge. Our days were spent doing some of the most bucket-list-worthy things to do in Belize . We first got to hike up to some natural pools created by Antelope Falls. We then put our harnesses on so we could rappel down the 100-foot ledge of Antelope Fall.

Ziplining in Belize - Bocawina park with Island Expeditions

But that’s not all! Bocawina is also home to the longest zipline in Belize. Stretching across 2,300 feet, over the jungle canopy, sliding down the Fast and Furious Zipline is one of the most thrilling things to do in Belize. The adventure tours offered at Bocawina are some of the best in Belize.

Seeing as Bocawina Park is a lush rainforest, birding here is one of the best things to do. Early in the morning, to the sound of howler monkeys, you can spot all sorts of amazing birds. They fly around all day, making it the perfect place to learn about some more bird species. There are also plenty of hiking trails to walk along where you can bird-watch.

Bocawina is a great place to visit in Belize for those seeking adventure, thrills and excitement.

14. Xunantunich, an unmissiable landmark in Belize

Xunantunich is a place that should be on everyone’s list of places to visit in Belize. Located in San Ignacio, close to the border with Guatemala, Xunantunich is an ancient Mayan ruin that is built on a natural ridge overlooking the Mopan River Valley, and was occupied by the Mayans from the 7th century AD until the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century.

The name “Xunantunich” means “Stone Woman” in the Mayan language, and is thought to refer to a legend about a ghostly woman who appears at the site. The main structure at Xunantunich is the El Castillo temple, which stands at over 40 meters (130 feet) tall and offers stunning views of the surrounding jungle and countryside.

View of Xunantunich, ruins in San Ignacio

The site also features a number of other structures, including several smaller temples, palaces, and residential buildings. The structures are built of limestone and feature intricate carvings and friezes depicting Mayan gods and rulers.

Visitors to Xunantunich can explore the site on foot, and can climb to the top of El Castillo for a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Guided tours of the site are also available and provide visitors with in-depth information about the history and culture of the Mayan people who lived at Xunantunich.

The site is open to visitors daily, from 8 am to 5 pm, and there is a small admission fee to enter the park ($10 BZD for non-residents). The site is a popular destination for tourists and history buffs alike and offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient civilization of the Mayans. Guided tours are best if you want to get the full history of this amazing place. It’s one of the best places to visit in San Ignacio and Belize alike.

15. Caracol, a must-see place in Belize

The final landmark in Belize you should visit is Caracol. We placed it last on the list because it’s a bit of a trek to get to, even though it’s located near San Ignacio, within the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

Caracol is an ancient Mayan city, founded in 1200 BC, and it’s one of the largest and most important archeological sites in Belize. Back in its hey day, Caracol was a major Mayan center. At its peak, it was home to over 120,000 people.

Today, Caracol is known for its impressive architecture and larger-than-life structures, especially its tall pyramid, the tallest in Belize, the Caana. This tower stands over 43 meters high, making it one of the tallest man-made structures in Belize. Quite impressive for something so old! The ancient city also features many other temples, palaces, residential buildings, ball courts and ceremonial structures.

Caracol Ruins, on your Belize Bucketlist

You can explore Caracol on your own or with a guided tour . Getting to Caracol is quite a long route – about 2 hours on a bumpy dirt road, which is why you’ll need a rental car if you plan to visit independently. The tour will include transport, plus you’ll get so much info about this must-see place in Belize. You’ll need a good 2 hours to visit the site, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen and insect repellent.

If you’re looking to visit an ancient Mayan Ruin that is a bit off the beaten path, Caracol is the place for you! Its rich history and unique location make it one of the best places to visit in Belize.

Discovering the Heart of Belize: A Guide to the Top 5 Must-See Attractions

famous attractions in belize

Belize is probably not the number one location on your list of countries you must visit. It should be. Sitting just on the Central American east coast, Belize benefits from Caribbean temperatures and beaches on the Caribbean Sea. More than that it offers a wide range of stunning attractions which tap into the ancient history of the region as well as being immensely enjoyable. A private villa in Belize will give you the luxury you deserve for your holiday as you explore our top five attractions.

Ambergris Caye

A Brief History of Ambergris Caye Belize

Ambergris Caye is the largest of the islands that belong to Belize and sit in its northern waters. It’s the top tourist destination of the country due to its relaxing, laid back atmosphere and Caribbean feel. No high rise hotels and big city traffic mean you can totally chill out and most people get around the isle by walking, cycling or renting golf carts.

Lamanai Mayan Ruins in Orange Walk Belize

Lamanai is a former Mayan settlement which can be visited as ruins. It’s not 100% uncovered but it’s a fascinating look at the history of an ancient people who dominated Central America. Archaeologists are working in the area constantly to uncover and restore larger structures such as temples and dwellings. Lamanai translates from the Maya for submerged crocodile.

Actun Tunichil Muknal

7 Epic Belize Adventure Tours

Actun Tunichil Muknal  is a cave in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. Near to San Ignacio the cave was discovered in the early nineties and found itself the feature of a National Geographic Explorer film. It’s been explored and discovered to be a sacred site for the Mayan people and contains many mementos and artefacts of the ancient civilisation. The site even includes several sets of human remains – preserved thanks to the covering of limestone crystals formed naturally.

Xunantunich

xunantunich

Xunantunich is another Mayan ruin site which sits near San Ignacio. It’s within viewing distance of the Guatemalan border and has a range of different structures of different sizes and ages. The majority of ruins date from between 200 and 900 BC. The second tallest structure in Belize, El Castillo, sits at Xunantunich so is a great spot for taking some timely photos and adding even more memories to your break.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

cockscomb basin wildlife sanctuary

One of the many reasons to travel somewhere exotic is to enjoy things you can’t enjoy at home and see things you’ve never seen before. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Belize’s largest protected areas. It’s existed since 1990 and was originally protected as the world’s first wilderness sanctuary for the jaguar. There are a large number of jaguars living in the sanctuary, although they are rarely seen. Instead you will see many exotic birds and plant types.

Lounging in private luxury is one thing but if you’re enjoying somewhere as fascinating as Belize you should head out to see at least some of the sights.
