And it goes without saying, you can't take your changing table out with you.

It’s not a looker, but there are plenty of fabric covers on the market that can change that.

When what you need is literally just a cover small enough to tote in a tiny purse or stroller organizer, this option is perfect. It folds down into a 10 x 6.5-inch rectangle that stays in place thanks to a sturdy Velcro strap, then unfolds to a spacious 30 x 19 inch pad. It has a little padding to protect your baby, but it’s still light enough that you’ll barely notice it in your diaper bag, until the moment you need a tiny changing space. 

The padding isn’t very thick, so this pad won’t win any prizes for comfort.

A changing pad is simply a soft, safe place to lay your baby while you change their diaper or clothes. There are two main types of changing pads: the ones that sit on top of dressers or changing tables and stay in your home or the portable type that fold into a compact shape to fit inside a diaper bag. 

Traditional at-home changing pads are made of padded material and have covers that are waterproof and a restraint belt to keep your child in place (though you should always keep one hand on your baby at all times for safety). Some parents also use fabric covers that are washable on top of the waterproof surface. Another popular kind of changing pad is made from foam that can be wiped clean; these changing pads don’t use covers, but also have safety belts.  

Portable diaper changing pads, on the other hand, are generally easy to carry in diaper bags or purses. They typically have a plastic liner that you can easily wipe clean after a change, or are machine-washable. Many travel sized changing pads come included with diaper bags, but some are standalone pads that fold up and can be hooked to your stroller.

As far as materials go, this travel changing pad is made from PEVA material that is Oeko-Tex certified. While I wouldn’t say this is totally non-toxic, it is a cleaner option that offers a lot of functionality. If you do buy this item, I would probably recommend laying a swaddle blanket underneath your baby, just in case.

But otherwise, it does look like a good and cleaner option for on-the-go diaper changes! I would totally get this for the convenience factor alone + the fact that it’s Oeko-Tex certified doesn’t hurt.

We chose the best changing pads by speaking with a pediatrician and reviewing guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to determine the safety and health criteria for the selections on our list. We researched reviews from customers and competitors and examined the features of dozens of changing pads on the market, considering attributes like design, ease of cleaning, material, and safety when making our picks.

We consulted with Nkeiruka Orajiaka, MBBS, a board-certified pediatrician, on how to use a changing pad safely and what to look for in this item.

Factors to Consider in a Changing Pad

• Design: A diaper-changing pad should provide comfort and safety for the little one who will spend a lot of time on it. Look for changing pads with features like a three-sided or contoured design to prevent them from rolling off, with additional cushioning to keep babies comfortable and protect their heads. Moreover, the changing pad should fit in the space you're looking at, such as a changing table dresser.
• Waterproof Material: It’s essential to make sure the changing pad has waterproof or an easily wipeable material because, with babies, anything (messy) can happen. Some changing pads come with a waterproof cover, or the pad itself wipes off. Make sure liquid can't leak into the pad, which could cause mildew or mold. Whether the changing pad or the cover is waterproof, double-check the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning. “Changing areas are huge breeding areas for both viruses and bacteria. Urine and feces are considered dirty, and if not cleaned off a surface, [they] can serve as a focus for most of these bugs to continue to grow,” explains Dr. Orajiaka. “When you place a baby on an unclean surface continuously, they may not only put their skin at risk of rash or irritation, but babies also touch all surfaces they are placed on and put their hands in the mouth. This can put them at risk of also getting sick from these bugs.”
• Safety Straps: Safety straps help keep your baby in place (since you do only have two hands). Many changing pads come with adjustable straps and a buckle so you can adjust to the proper size. Some changing pads also feature anchoring straps to attach them to a table or dresser, ensuring additional safety while changing your baby. Dr. Orajiaka recommends this option if possible. “Always buckle the straps while changing a baby, but don’t depend on this alone to keep your baby safe," she says. "Stay with your baby at all times while changing and avoid distractions. When you are done changing, remove your baby from the table first and to a safer location before removing your dirty diapers or clothing.”

Your Questions, Answered

Is it worth it to buy an expensive changing pad.

Until your little one becomes potty trained, they will need their diaper changed upwards of 3,500 times. So investing in a changing pad that saves you time (a pad that is easy to clean) and money (one secure enough to lay on top of any surface, meaning you can forgo buying a dedicated changing table), could be a good idea. What’s more, investing in a changing pad that stands the test of time means that you have the option of using it for more than one child.

However, there are plenty of safe, comfortable and easy to clean changing pads that are also affordable, so don't feel any pressure to spend more than you want to.

How many changing pads do I need to buy?

Having an extra or two might make life easier, but one changing pad is all you really need. If you live in a two-story house, having one changing pad upstairs and one downstairs will be more convenient than having to navigate the stairs every time you need to change the baby. Having a separate, portable changing pad that you keep in your diaper bag is also a worthwhile investment for on-the-go diaper changes.

Do changing pads come in a standard size?

Changing pads differ in dimensions, with the average size being approximately 17.5 x 27.5 inches. If you have a particular spot that you are planning to keep and use your changing pad, measure the space before you buy it to ensure that it fits. If you are using your changing pad on a changing table, dresser or another elevated position and is too big, it poses a safety risk. However, you may want to ensure that your changing pad is large enough to see you through to toddlerhood.

Our Good Housekeeping Institute parenting experts have looked at more than 20 diaper changing pads in the past 10 years. We look at products in our Lab in New York City and also send them to consumer testers in homes nationwide. For changing pads meant for use on a changing table, we only consider ones with a safety belt and contoured sides. Overall, we assess whether they're easy to use, simple to clean, durable and whether a baby comfortably fits on it.

Safety standards: Any changing pad we consider must meet the federal safety standards . The ASTM standards clarify requirements on the stability, materials, warning labels, instructions and more for your baby products. These requirements help eliminate safety hazards regarding the materials, straps and structural integrity of each product. Before purchasing, check if the product states it is ASTM-certified.

What to look for when shopping for the best diaper changing pad

Before you hit "add to cart," here are a few things to keep in mind when looking for the right diaper changing pad for your needs:

✔️ Material: The modern hard-foam diaper changing pads and those with a water-resistant cotton cover can all be wiped clean and do not need an additional fabric cover. But wipeable changing pads are more expensive to buy. Traditional-style changing pads with plastic wrapped around a foam core are cheaper and many parents use them with a fabric cover that can be laundered. There are thousands of different changing pad covers from brands such as Pottery Barn , Aden and Anais and Carter's in many different fabrics and ranging in price from about $15 to $50 each. Target now also makes a Circo wipeable changing pad cover for $17.

Some parents refer to the foam variety of changing pads as "silicone," but to our knowledge, there are no actual silicone changing pads.

✔️ Comfort: Having a supportive changing pad will make changes more comfortable for your child. We still recommend thinner portable or disposable changing mats when traveling or in a pinch, just not for everyday changes.

✔️ Stability: Opt for a changing pad that has a safety belt and contoured sides to help keep your baby from rolling around, and use the belt every time. A non-skid bottom is also great for keeping the changing pad from sliding around on whatever surface it's placed on. We find many of the molded-foam changing pads to be somewhat naturally grippy.

✔️ Size: Most changing pads are roughly 32 inches long and 16 inches wide, but there are some small variations. If you're using a changing table or a changing-table tray on top of a dresser, it can be worth it to measure the space you have to work with to be sure the changing pad you're buying will fit.

✔️ Water resistance and cleaning: We get that you want to avoid plastics and such for your baby, but changing pads get pee and poo on them, so they're made of tough stuff. Traditional changing pads are made with a waterproof outer layer so the interior core stays pristine, and additionally you can wrap it in a changing pad cover that you can launder. Hard-shell changing pads are made to be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Diaper-changing station safety

First, some lessons learned from the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Give some thought to your changing table. Restoring an old dresser or reusing an adult piece of furniture with a flat top might seem like a good idea, but we recommend using a product specifically designed for diaper-changing that meets the industry safety standards.

You can look for brands that are on the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association list of certified changing tables , meaning it's been validated by a reputable third party. This Delta Children changing table that has guardrails on all four sides is an example of a stand-alone changing station with safety features built in. It is also possible to do without a changing table and change your baby's diapers with the changing pad on the floor — tough on your back, perhaps, but honestly the safest method. After all, your baby can't fall from a height if they are already at floor level.

This probably goes without saying but we want to say it anyway: Changing pads are not safe for your baby's sleep. If they fall asleep during a diaper change, transfer your baby to their crib or bassinet.

• Don't trust yourself alone to prevent falls; use the safety belt on the changing pad and use a pad with contoured sides if your baby is up on a dresser or changing table.

• That said: Always keep a hand on your baby . Never leave a child unattended on a dressing table, even for a moment, and even if they are strapped.

Is a changing pad necessary?

Strictly speaking, no. You can (and likely sometimes will) change your baby's diaper while they lie on a blanket or towel on the floor. Then you just have to do some extra laundry, because boy babies especially tend to pee during a diaper change.

If you have your baby up on a changing table, you need a changing pad with contoured sides and straps to hold your wriggly baby in place. Even if you don't use a changing table and opt to change diapers on the floor , a good changing pad can lessen the stress of life with a newborn, primarily because they are made of materials that can be frequently cleaned . They're also cushioned so your baby is more comfortable and less likely to bang their head on the floor.

Changing Diapers on a Plane: Things to Know Before Flying

D ealing with diapers on a plane is never a thrilling part of traveling with a baby. In-flight poops are not fun, but you will get through it. We promise! With a few tips, the right diaper changing supplies and a little practice you’ll be an in-flight diaper pro. Then you’ll be able to concentrate on finding the best spots to visit with baby. Let’s go through everything you’ll need to be ready to handle diapers on a plane.

Changing Diapers on a Plane: How and Where

As a frequent business traveler and mother of four, I can confidently state that flying with babies requires planning. We cover general flying with baby tips but the topic of changing diapers on a plane deserves its own discussion.

Changing diapers in flight is obviously a necessity. One question that always comes up is where you change a diaper on a plane. The two main options are in the lavatory of the plane or at your seat.

The Only Time You Should Ever Change a Diaper at Your Seat

Please promise us that you will head to the bathroom to change diapers if it is possible. It gives you a changing table, space to work and privacy to perfect your craft.

The only time an in-seat diaper change should occur is if you are not permitted to get up and move about the cabin. Not only does no one want to see that but it sets up a precarious, potentially messy situation. You love your baby but do you really want to end up wearing their by-products?

Best Tips for Changing Diapers On a Plane

1. invest in a travel changing pad to deal with diapers on a plane..

We have a travel-changing pad that folds up into a little kit. It holds wipes, a few diapers, a change of clothes and some plastic bags. This “small profile” changing kit is much easier to carry down a narrow aisle to the airplane bathroom than a full diaper bag.

2. Perform a pre-boarding diaper change.

Change baby as close to boarding time as possible. The hope is it buys you more time before they’ll soil themselves on the airplane. Or your baby might take it as a personal challenge and go during the boarding process- you never know!

3. Identify the location of the changing table.

Unfortunately, not every plane will have a changing table on board. Those that do often only have one in a lavatory (not necessarily all of the lavs). The flight attendant will be able to tell you the location of the changing table. Most equipment used for longer cross-country flights will have some type of changing table to deal with diapers on a plane.

4. No changing table? Ask for advice.

Some small regional jets don’t have a changing table. In these situations, ask the flight attendant for the best spot for a diaper change. Some will offer a sheet to cover the jump seat or even have you do it in on the back galley floor. Another popular recommendation is to change baby on a closed toilet seat which we go deeper into in a bit.

5. Plastic bags are for winners.

Show your love for fellow passengers by bagging poop diapers on a plane in their own plastic disposal bag to contain the smell. Airplane lavatories are small and easily overwhelmed by odors. If it’s a particularly offensive diaper, ask the flight attendant if you should put it in the plane’s rear trash receptacle.

6. Repeat after me: Never on the tray table.

Please don’t even look at the seat back tray table as an option for changing diapers on a plane. First, they aren’t that sturdy. Second, they aren’t that clean. Third, it is the epitome of rude. I’d venture to say it’s one of the biggest air travel faux pas you can perform. I’ve heard rumors about toenail clipping on planes though and it’s a hard contest between those two.

7. Wear baby in a carrier if possible.

Airplane bathrooms are small. The changing tables? Sometimes they fold out origami-style. I travel with a baby carrier . Being able to keep baby closer to you and have both hands free makes it so much easier to get the changing table down. No one wants to juggle changing supplies while holding an infant. Trying to release a drop-down changing table is tricky and no one wants to accidentally bonk baby.

Don’t have a carrier? Ask nicely and a flight attendant may hold your kiddo for a minute or put the table down for you.

8. Keep it sanitary when changing diapers on a plane.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a unique fear. Baby touches something nasty. They jam their hands in their mouth. Baby develops a strange disease that is named after them. Bring a travel pack of Clorox-style disinfectant wipes or individual Purell wipes . Wipe down the changing table, toilet seat and seat area before starting the diaper change.

9. How do I change a baby on a closed toilet seat?

When planes don’t have changing tables, a frequent suggestion is to change baby’s diaper on a closed toilet seat. I do not recommend this. It’s not conducive to diaper changes. The angle is tricky and you either need to work your calf muscles with a hardcore squat or kneel on the lavatory floor.

A lot of folks suggest disposable changing pads. These can definitely work, but they move around. My secret weapon? Disposable sticky placemats like they have at Chick-Fil-A. With adhesive on the bottom and around the edges, you stick them to surfaces like the floor (or closed toilet seat if you went that route). Then throw it away. Total germ barrier. Kneeling? Put one on the lavatory floor to kneel on. Isn’t family travel fun?

When changing a dirty diaper on the closed toilet seat, be sure to keep one hand on the infant at all times. These lids usually have a slight curve to them. You want to make sure baby doesn’t roll or fall off off. Again, I recommend a baby carrier of some type. Once the diaper change is complete, strap baby back in. Then gather your supplies, clean up and wash your hands.

10. Perfect the standing diaper change.

Obviously this trick isn’t going to work for a 2-month-old. For taller children who are still in diapers, a standing change is an option. Have your kiddo stand on the closed toilet seat lid. Pull down their pants, undo the diaper and let it drop into your hand. Don’t forget to check for poop first! Roll it, bag it up and secure a fresh diaper on your child.

If you put on the new diaper while the child is standing, be sure to inspect the edges. Make sure you haven’t given them a diaper wedgie that will result in a mess later. For best results, don’t try this for the first time on the airplane! Practice a few standing diaper changes at home pre-trip. Standing also works for side-of-the-road diaper changes during road trips.

11. In-lap diaper changes: What you need to know!

All else has failed. The seat belt sign is on, there’s no changing table, the seats next to you are taken and your kiddo has a wet diaper. It’s time to perform a feat that any traveling parent dreads: the in-lap diaper change. Basically, you are going to use your lap as a changing table. It’s not ideal and done improperly, it can end in mess and disaster. If there’s an option to change baby in the aisle quickly, you may want to go for it.

How to Change Baby’s Diapers on a Plane on Your Lap

Rope your seat neighbor into holding supplies. Trust me, that person wants it over with as fast as possible too. Take a receiving blanket or disposable changing pad and put it over your lap. Lay baby on their back, butt end towards you. Try to distract them with a toy if possible.

Spread out the new diaper and put it under their butt. Once that’s in place, peel off the old diaper. Slide it out and fasten the new one.

Pooptastrophe? It gets more complicated. Have your travel partner or seat neighbor hand you wipes. Have a plastic bag open and ready to put dirties into.

Again, lap changes are a last resort and should only be attempted if absolutely necessary. This is one of the main reasons I recommend people pack a change of clothes for themselves AND baby.

12. What diaper supplies should I pack for a flight?

Look at the length of your flight and think about your child’s patterns. Most kiddos require a diaper change every 2-3 hours; more frequently for breast-fed babies. If it’s a one-hour flight, you may not even have to change a diaper. For a two- to three-hour flight, a folding changing pad carrier with five diapers jammed in should be adequate. Don’t forget the bags for dirty diapers !

A cross-country flight? You should pack a diaper bag that contains the easy-to-grab changing kit as one of your carry-on items. Be sure to include disposable changing pads or a r eceiving blanket for covering changing surfaces (like your lap). Many airlines will not count a diaper bag against you as a carry-on. Check your carrier’s policy.

13. Add extra protection to diapers on a plane.

Obviously you want that plane diaper to contain everything. No leaks, pooptastrophes or escaped pee! I recommend using nighttime diapers on a plane. They’re made to contain extra fluids and if baby sleeps for a long time on the plane, you won’t be worried. Another trick we’ve used? Cloth diaper covers . Believe it or not we actually brought two of ours cross-country on flights while cloth diapering. We stopped that for our fourth, but I still used the waterproof cover over a disposable diaper as an extra “uh-oh” layer.

14. Attitude is everything.

Above all else going into the flight with the right attitude can make or break the trip. Flying with a baby can be tough. It can induce anxiety. You WILL get through it. We promise.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
