Top airlines flying to stansted.

did not get the seats we had specially paid for

This is a no frills airline. You cant expect much for the price. Low cost flight, clean, nice staff. That's all I need for the price. If you want more, book with another airline and pay more. For Europe trips, PLAY is the ONLY airline I use

Misleading instructions for check in. Although I did virtual check in and was instructed to head to security, once I was at security, they told me to go back to Play ticket counter and get paper tickets. Also, beware that Play doesn’t participate in TSA PreCheck. I didn’t know that, despite entering PreCheck info when I purchased the tickets. I wasted time in the TSA PreCheck line as well. So we had two setbacks at check in.

It's a budget airline, so forewarned is forearmed. Yes, you pay for everything like carry-on, checked baggage, seat selection, but that's becoming the case with major airlines. Bringing your own snacks and entertainment on board is highly recommended. It's no frills, but the crew, the plane and the flight itself was great. If you want pampering go for a larger airline. If you just want to get from A to B in comfort and safety, Play is a great choice.

It is a low cost airline. Staff are courteous. There is no entertainment. Food is purchased.

Upon boarding, the people at the gate were extremely rude, there were no outlets on a 6 hour international flight, there was no entertainment, all food and drink was purchase only (even snacks), and my seat reclining function was fully broken. The only redeeming quality was the flight attendants were extremely nice. This was by far the worst flight I have ever been on in my entire life

I don’t know how international flights can’t have media screens to keep people entertained for the long flight. Ugh.

Typical experience for budget airline. Boarding from KEF required bus transit from the gate to plane, so if you had "priority boarding" it was useless as it was simply a free-for-all when getting off the bus. But still no issues with getting our luggage into overhead bin so not really a problem.

Was very apprehensive about flying Play, but the flight was fine. Nothing special, nothing horrible. Fair price to get from New York to Iceland.

I wasn’t able to check in online the day before or the day of because their web configuration or business model idk. I arrived an hour early and check was closed and there was no one around to speak to and eventually was told there was no possible way to get a digital ticket despite I had no luggage to check and would have easily made it through security to boarding and had to pay for a new ticket for $330 ontop of the $169 I spend for the ticket and then I missed my rental car for $305 because I only arrived at midnight instead of noon that I was originally intended. All booked through kayak. I hope there is some kind of insurance from kayak because this was totally preventable had I not been blocked by play air from getting my check in and plane ticket.

In economy and food was ok, but with limited leg space (and I was in a 2 seat configuration) it was difficult to eat with a tiny seat tray. I spilt wine on my trousers. First time on British Air (I usually fly Turkish Air) and in a 777. Heathrow was pleasant but changing terminals awkward.

Starting with the flight Cairo to London the plain was so poor no entertainment at all uncomfortable seats although it’s 5 hours long, then an American airline plain took me from London to Miami it was a bad experience the crew most of flight time not available and they asked us to help our selves for any snacks if we need. From Miami to London actually was perfect flight with a huge plain and perfect crew but from London to Cairo was horrible plain with stiff fixed seats not movable no entertainment or wi fi very poor Menu which is unacceptable for a business class

I've done hundreds of flights in my life, and this flight was one of the best I've ever taken, From beginning to end, everything went smoothly, professionally, and with a smile and friendly attitude from all employees I interacted with. The food was delicious (and free), as were the drinks. There was just a genial and effective way in the way that British Airways organized the flight -that reminded of days in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, when flying was a fun, and exciting adventure. I enjoyed and had confidence in the abilities of the flight crew, I'll be flying British Airways several more times this summer. Thank you so much for the great experience! Cheryl Olso

Terrible! I missed my flight to my final destination and British airlines and American Airlines keep pointing fingers on each other’s. Nobody wants to take responsibility

Overall, terrific service, accommodations, and experience. Only reason comfort was rated lower was because it was difficult to keep a comfortable sleeping position for the overnight flight, but I also had an economy seat.

Very cramped seats in economy, difficult to get comfortable with your legs and feet and back. The seat width is ok but I’m average size. Food is HORRIBLE. Crew is friendly. Delays and very tight connections made it tough for navigating. We would have missed our connecting flight if it wasn’t delayed too. The terminal transit was slow and normally every 10 minutes before 8pm, after 8 pm is every 30 minutes!!!!! No free wine or drinks!! Below average attitude.

Leg room was better than expected. Lavatory’s were easy to access.crew was grea!

Horrible seat allocation. Boarding was slow. Food was average and so was entertainment. The TV terminal didn't work and so had to use remote.

Lost one checked bag.and wasted 30min waiting and filing missing baggage report. Very unsatisfied.

This was an American Airlines flight. The crew were very unhappy and quite grumpy. Abrupt to the point of being rude. The food was dreadful. Indeed the breakfast was in edible. I will avoid AA at all costs in the future.

Which transport between Stansted Airport and London?

Your stansted to london transport options identified and compared.

Stansted Airport is situated 38 miles (61km) north of London, a long and very expensive taxi ride or at first sight a bewildering choice of 6 public bus services and one train service. There is no universal “best” way between London and Stansted Airport.

To make an informed decision on which option is best for you, you first need to be sure of where exactly in London your destination or departure point is. London is a very spread out city and just knowing where your London accommodation is will probably rule out a few of the options on offer.

Seems obvious but you would be surprised how many people don't know whereabouts in London their accommodation is when deciding on the best option for them.

Stansted Express - fast, frequent and relatively expensive

(With London Terminus that may be far from where you want to be in London )

The Stansted Express train is the most frequent and fastest Stansted Airport to central London transport, though surprisingly only about 10 minutes' quicker than the scheduled travel time of the much cheaper airport buses that also go to and from Liverpool Street.

As well as being the fastest transport it's also the most comfortable, the only option where you can stand up and stretch on your journey and the only option where a refreshment trolley comes to your seat!

Other plus points is that luggage is only limited by the amount you can carry on board without assistance and unlike the airport buses you won't get stuck in London's traffic.

For many visitors to London the big minus with the Stansted Express is its London terminus at Liverpool Street. Liverpool Street is in the City of London, London's main business area.

There are few hotels here and what hotels that are here are more geared towards global financiers on expense accounts than leisure travellers. To get to the hotel districts that most leisure visitors use from Liverpool Street can take as long as the train from Stansted.

Airport Bus Services - big selling point = price

If low cost is the main purchasing decision then you are going to choose one of the airport bus services. There are two competing operators, (National Express and Airport Bus Express) offering a total of six separate services.

The further your bus choice ventures into London the bigger the chance of delays through traffic congestion. You therefore adopt one of two strategies.

Either you go for one of the services that do not go into the centre but drop you by an Underground Station in the suburbs like Stratford and complete your journey by tube or you identify the service that goes closest to your destination or departure point in London and risk traffic congestion delays.

Airport Bus Express or National Express for your Stansted - London transfer?

Although superficially both National Express and Airport Bus Express offer very similar services, there are real differences when you look closer:

Airport Express offer a simple flat fee ticket price with a small discount for round trip journeys.

National Express have dynamic pricing, basically the further in advance you book tickets the cheaper the fare.

In broad summary, if you can book your tickets well in advance National Express will probably be cheaper, buy at short notice and Airport Express may have the edge on price.

Ticket Flexibility - What if your flight is late?

With National Express you have to select an individual schedule. However, for Stansted they offer flexible travel now, so you can get a coach up to 3-hrs earlier or up to 3-hrs later than the time indicated on your ticket for no additional charge. You can buy more expensive flexible tickets or pay a supplement on reservation allowing you 12 hours flexibility either side of your chosen schedule if you prefer.

With Airport Express the ticket is flexible and can be used any time, any date and any direction.

Frequencies

National Express have the definite edge here, offering better frequencies and 4 services with additional choiice as a result of your chosen bus stop in London.

Child Fare Concession Age Band

National Express childrens fare age band is 3-15 year old, Airport Express is 4-12 years old.

Luggage Allowance

Very similar for both operators, 2 cases plus an item of hand luggage per person.

Private car or charter bus with driver may well be cheaper for groups than bus

A vehicle with driver just for your party has a lot going for it, especially if you are a small group or larger.

The driver will meet n greet you as you exit the customs/luggage hall of the passenger terminal (or at an airport hotel) and lead you to the waiting vehicle for an immediate departure.

The driver also monitors your incoming flight and will adjust his/her arrival time to the actual time your flight arrives.

We can supply vehicles from sedans to 70 seat coaches and if you want to do some sightseeing on the way, no problem too, with or without guiding.

Everything! Not sure if there's really anything that could make it any better

Very quick trip from Southampton to Edinburgh Arrival a long way from baggage and up 3flights of stairs no lifts or escalators

Not great! Rude staff in London and the worse baggage reclaim I’ve ever seen. Great staff in flight but doubt I’ll fly with them again

You booked my 7 year old son to sit on his own without his mum and dad in s separate row between two unfriendly adult strangers. The plane was disgusting and dirty, aisles and everywhere sticky. The lounge waiting area was filthy carpet and had insufficient seats so we had to sit on it to wait for 35 minutes and my 7 year old sone played on this filthy lounge carpet. The outside of the plane appeared clean. The pilot was helpful with the route and what to expect weather etc.

The seat leg room seemed much tighter on the way home My cheese toasty wasn’t that hot - didn’t realise till half eaten

The flight boarded a little late but made up the time in flight - much appreciated. The staff were efficient and fairly friendly One of the toilets wasn’t working - having only one functioning toilet for a flight of hundreds isn’t really acceptable. I still find it amazing that the budget airlines can’t even offer free tap water to passengers.

Plane out was great, one back was cramped. Awful. Thankfully great crew!

Perfect timing, perfect departure, lovely crew on the ground and in the air.

Good flight. Take off a little late but make up the time

Everything’s went straight forward, no issues, good service and friendly crew

Left on time and arrived on time both ways, thank you

The flight was 45 mins delayed but the crew provided water and necessities like tissues

Cheap flights as you expect with Ryanair. I would take cheaper flights over entertainment and comfort for short haul travel. Main issue is usually delays at airports. In this case we landed roughly 2hr30 later than planned due to earlier delays with the plane. Not the worst I imagine

We each paid for 10kg checked in luggage. Flying out there were no issues sharing one case (20kg). Not so coming back. Additional £48 charge and unable to provide an explanation of why it was ok on one journey but not the other, or indeed what material difference it makes between 2x10kg cases vs 1x20kg case. Scam, and appalling from Ryanair.

Easy process and good flight experience The food good be better

I didn't like. The seats and the floor were very dirty and it is not the first time

Unfortunately didn't realise how far away Frankfurt Hahn airport is from Frankfurt the city. Outbound flight was delayed by 2.5 hours and no communication at airport, just a whisper emknating through the packed crowd ready to board at the gate as someone read out an email they had received. All rather poor and pathetic

Food not so good. Need more veggies and whole grain especially the late food. Couldn’t figure out how to use the entertainment system.

Check in was horrendous! Economy took 2 hours before seeing an agent. Business class was 0.5 - 1 hour.

The first class flight itself was first class, however getting to the airport and getting through the airport was agony. The BA flight sat on the taxiway for ages and caused us to miss our connecting flight which meant half a day lost. Our return flight on BA was cancelled so a dawn flight was made and we lost another half day. Goodby BA

There was some delay at Heathrow where a machine needed to "start the engines" wasn't available and they couldn't even find the team tasked to do it. Unacceptable. Caused about an hour delay and seemed unnecessary. Also saw several passengers abusing the overhead luggage situation, having too many large bags and not leaving enough space for others. The crew was good and the refreshments were good in quality and quantity.

They cancelled our ticket, gave us no warning, they reissued it 4 days prior to trip and it was cancelled again when we got to the airport- very stressful, the flight was overbooked so they drove us across Milan to malpensa

Great little city hopper plane. Unfussy and roomy. Nice little snack provided too

Cheryl Olso

Some how I got “offloaded” even though I had my boarding pass Food was horrible Staff were nice and cheerful No headphones were provided

We bought tickets for £30 from kayak but we paid £55 for check in to rayan , they slaught us

Flight was delayed so long we missed our second flight. Entire trip had to be cancelled. Ryanair refused to help us.

Stanton airport is outdated, pure equiped, airport. Fire alarms, power outages is a common routine, wich result ir flights delay , additional money spending and huge gathering of people in airport wich is unsafe.

After you made us check-in I tried to add a suitcase in the internet and also to get help by chet. Nothing work and we pay 60 pounds at Airport. Comper to Easyjet to do the same, was easy and customer friendly.

Boarding was like being hoarded like cattle, all penned in in an area way to small

I missed the flight from Manchester to Dublin because of poor informations from Aer Lingus and the airport, no possibility to check in online, they don't respond to phone calls, I had to buy another tickets to enable me travel to Dublin from Manchester. I want my money to refund.

Rude check in staff. Split family up with young children.

I were there 20min before departure and they didn’t let me on the board with 5 other people, after all they admitted it was their(Ryanair) fault.

How to Travel From London Stansted Airport to London by Bus, Train, and Car

travel to london stansted

VisitBritain / Britain on View / Getty Images

London Stansted Airport (STN), one of the busiest of the British city's six airports, is located 35 miles (56 kilometers) to the northeast of central London . The airport is home to many of the U.K.'s low-cost airlines serving mostly European and Mediterranean destinations. To get from London Stansted Airport to central London, travelers can take a bus, train, taxi, or rental car. While the train is the fastest, the cheapest way to get into town is by bus.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From London Stansted Airport to London?

The least expensive way to get to London from London Stansted Airport is by bus; two companies offer daily service. Airport Bus Express runs every half hour to Liverpool Street and Victoria Bus/Coach Station, with rides lasting about 80 minutes starting at $13. These modern buses have free WiFi, air conditioning, and heating. Another equally comfortable option is National Express, with four air-conditioned routes to London: Portman Square, Victoria Coach Station, Kings Cross, and London Stratford. The buses usually leave every 20 minutes and last about 95 minutes depending on the route and number of stops. Prices begin at $6. Commute times can vary from day to day depending on traffic or construction work on the road. With all of the bus services, it is usually cheapest to buy tickets in advance . If you haven't booked ahead, you can ask the driver for the onboard fare.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From London Stansted Airport to London?

Taking a train is the quickest way into central London. The Stansted Express typically leaves every 15 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes in the early morning and late evening, with a journey time of 45–50 minutes to Liverpool Street station. You can book tickets online or via the Stansted Express app—people who make reservations early often get discounts on tickets, which start at $19. Greater Anglia trains leave daily every 15 minutes from London Stansted Airport to London Liverpool Street. Rides take about 47 minutes and prices begin at $12; it is best to book online in advance.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

A taxi will take around 45 minutes to Liverpool Street, approximately 33 miles (54 kilometers) away. Since there aren't any black cabs leaving from Stansted, use a licensed and reputable minicab instead (from $100). Avoid unauthorized drivers who offer their services at airports or stations. Get a quote and reserve through the airport's online taxi system—or ask about 24/7 taxis at the taxi reservation desk in the international arrival concourse. Before you head out from the airport, ask the driver how much your ride will cost. In addition, there are several major car rental companies at London Stansted Airport (you may also reserve online in advance). Prices start at $15 a day plus gas for an economy car used by two adults.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to London?

London is a popular city to visit all year, so if you would prefer to arrive when fewer visitors are in town, one of the best times to take a trip is late winter/early spring (January to April, excluding the Easter holidays). Visitors enjoy London’s New Year’s Day Parade near Piccadilly and Chinese New Year in the city's Chinatown in February. Another good time to see London is in the fall (September to November) when the BFI London Film Festival and the huge Lord Mayor’s Show and parade come to town. Summer, Christmas, and the school holidays are the busiest seasons.

What Is There to Do in London?

London has numerous and varied activities that attract visitors from around the world. You can check out historic sites like Big Ben—a gigantic bell inside a clock tower— the royal Kensington Palace, or the famous changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Some tourists enjoy a show at one of the historic theaters in West End or the British afternoon tea tradition including tiny sandwiches and scones at high-end hotels or local department stores. Sipping on a pint of beer in a historic pub is another favorite thing to do. Kids and adults alike love the Harry Potter Studio Tour behind the scenes of the beloved Harry Potter movies.

Stansted and Birmingham airport passengers hit by long delays due to technical issues

P assengers at two of the UK’s busiest airports have experienced long delays due to technical issues – with flights this evening still affected.

London Stansted , Britain’s fourth-busiest airport, “experienced a partial power outage” on Monday morning. It affected check-in, security and baggage systems.

Some Jet2 departures to Turkey, Spain and Portugal were over two hours late, as was a Tui flight to Las Palmas and Ryanair to Kos.

Inbound flights from the affected destinations are also delayed, with a Jet2 flight from Lanzarote now expected at 9.30pm rather than 7.30pm. The Ryanair flight from Kos back to Stansted is estimated to be three hours late.

Passengers will not qualify for delay compensation since the cause was beyond the airlines’ control.

A spokesperson for Stansted said: “Power is now restored, and our teams are working hard to get systems back up and running as quickly as possible.

“However, it is taking slightly longer than usual for passengers to pass through the terminal while systems recover. Flights are operating as normal, but passengers are advised to allow plenty of time for their travel and check with their airline for the most up-to-date flight information.

“We apologies to passengers for the inconvenience and disruption to the journeys today.”

Passengers at Birmingham airport, meanwhile. experienced long waits for security checks – with some missing flights.

Joe Morris wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “After queuing for two hours at Birmingham airport I managed to get the staff to take me through security, only to miss my flight and for Ryanair to leave on time (for once) with a half-empty plane.”

Scott Miller posted on X : “Absolute shocking incompetence by the airport. They cannot process the number of passengers and yet after security the airport is empty.

“Birmingham airport is always poor but they’ve managed to take it to a new low level. Disaster. So many will miss flights.”

Tom Marshall wrote : “Birmingham airport queues are so slow we’re now on a plane 10 minutes past departure time, waiting for 80 more passengers stuck in queues.”

He later said on X: “The pilot told those of us already on the plane that they could just take off on time and blame the airport if passengers missed it, but he said they were making a point of waiting. So we departed 50 minutes late.”

An airport spokesperson said: “We saw a usual busy Monday morning at Birmingham airport with customers queuing downstairs, which is the new normal, as the upstairs queuing area has been taken out of service as we construct our new security area.

“This morning we encountered a technical issue with our security lanes, which compounded the peak departure schedule and hindered our operation.

“We sincerely apologise to our customers for the level of service that they received.

“We wish to remind our customers that existing security restrictions remain in place. On average 15 per cent of bags are rejected as they are not compliant with current security restrictions.

“For each customer, a non-compliant bag adds 10 minutes on top of their security search time.”

While some UK airports have fully upgraded their scanners to allow larger quantities of liquids and for laptops to be left in bags, most are not yet compliant with the government’s requirement for new technology .

Major delays at London airport after power outage

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Travellers have been warned to expect delays after a largescale power outage at Stansted Airport .

Photos and video shared by angry passengers show how the terminal was rammed with people standing waiting as the time to get to their flights slowed down so severely.

The problems affected systems across the airport, including baggage handling, check-in and security.

Although the power issue has now been resolved, knock-on delays remain and so people were warned to give themselves extra time.

‘It’s hell,’ passenger Paul Girdwood told Metro.co.uk.

Although he eventually managed to board his EasyJet flight which was ‘held back’ due to the problems, the start of his trip was an unpleasant experience jostling through crowds and waiting in long queues

Alongside video of the chaos, one passenger wrote on X: ‘I’m missing my flight. I arrived 2 hours and a half earlier. They are working with half of the machines causing queues of more than an hour.’

The airport in Essex is not the only London airport hit by disruption today.

Strikes by Border Force officers at Heathrow began today, threatening chaos during upcoming the May bank holiday.

New airline allows pawsengers in the cabin

BARK Air’s inaugural flight will be May 23.

I belong to a Facebook group called “ Chartered Air Travel with Pets .” It has more than 42,000 members who mostly share tips about flying overseas with pets and advertise privately chartered cross-country and transatlantic flights.

Think about people who are moving, say, from Toronto to Lisbon and don’t want to deal with the hassle — and potential dangers — of having their 90 pound Great Dane or 85 pound rottweiler fly cargo on a commercial airline.

While perusing posts in that Facebook group, I am always daydreaming. What if I could afford the $10,650 fare for a flight from New Jersey to Munich late in the summer with one of my yellow labs? We’d have a blast! Never mind that the pricey fare is just one way. (Hey, it’s a fantasy.)

All I can do is fantasize because the options for air travel with large-breed dogs are limited or cost-prohibitive.

Enter BARK Air .

Recognizing the “overwhelming demand for a dog-friendly airline that allows dog parents to transport or travel with their dogs,” BARK Air is launching next month and will serve the New York City metro area via Westchester County Airport, Los Angeles via Van Nuys Airport, and London via Stansted Airport, according to a press kit from the company.

To be sure, BARK Air is still pretty unaffordable. A one-way ticket from New York to LA is $6,000, and it’s $8,000 from New York to London per dog (“the human companion flies free,” touted the company.) BARK Air is partnering with a jet charter company to offer the flights and is the latest offering from BARK , the dog toy company established in 2011 offering themed subscription boxes of doggie toys and treats.

It’s true, the demand from pet owners to travel with their furry friends is strong. Not too long ago, people used to exploit an emotional support animal loophole of sorts to bring their pets in the cabin of commercial airlines. It was as easy as buying an official-looking vest on Amazon , getting a doctor’s note attesting that your pig — or snake , duck , or peacock — is your emotional support pet, and voila, you’d be given a free pass to bring the animal on board, consequences be damned . (To be clear, service animals are always allowed on planes but that’s a different, legally protected designation than the more vague emotional support category.)

That loophole has thankfully been tightened . So unless you have a small dog or a cat that can fit in a small carrier , you cannot bring your pet in the cabin of a commercial flight. You’d have to fly it cargo, a terrifying prospect .

There are a few smaller, independent air carriers with limited routes that allow big dogs in the cabin, like JSX (a round-trip fare for late May from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y., to Miami-Opa Locka executive airport is about $2,800 for one person and one large dog), as well as the more expensive Skye Pet Travel based in Australia and K9 Jets .

It may take a while for fares on BARK Air and other independent airlines to become more affordable. But with the size of the market — between 87 million and 91 million American households own a pet — it’s an overdue service and an overlooked business opportunity.
