Castello Scaligero, also known as Rocca Scaligero, built as a stronghold on the lake - Sirmione, Lago di Garda, The Lake District, Lombardia

Poets and politicians, divas and dictators, they've all been drawn to captivating Lake Garda (Lago di Garda). In fact, 7% of all tourists to Italy head for the lake’s shores, taking to its wind-ruffled waters in the north and village- and vineyard-hopping in the south. Surrounded by three distinct regions – Lombardy, Trentino Alto-Adige and the Veneto – the lake’s cultural diversity attracts a cosmopolitan crowd. Mitteleuropeans colonise northern resorts such as Riva del Garda and Torbole, where restaurants serve air-dried ham and Austrian-style carne salada (salted beef), while in the south, French and Italian families bed down in Valtenesi farmhouses and family-friendly spa towns such as Sirmione and Bardolino.

Dawn - June 2022

Thank you Frances. It was beautiful. The lake etc magnificent! Treatments (maybe a few too many. Not having been to a spa before) Staff were delightful. Hotel aspect great. It’s lovely hotel. Pool was beautiful. I swam 30 minutes every day. Massage was fantastic. Food took a little getting used to. The most important learning was that I now know what I should not eat to get away from my funny stomach. I am thrilled.

NICOLA - AUGUST 2020

Excellent and personal service. I loved my holiday and Frances was extremely helpful and responsive. Gorgeous resort and facilities. I would go again.

TIMOTHY - FEBRUARY 2020

Great service and great holiday recommendation. Fabulous spa hotel.

Catherine - September 2019

Fabulous hotel and spa treatments were wonderful. Staff were all great. The location is beautiful and you really relax and unwind. Very good stretching classes.

Eileen - April 2017

I and my husband have had the most wonderful week, taking the time to lose some weight and reconnect with ourselves. The practice and theory of Chinese medicine is integral to the ethos of the Spa and programmes. The staff were just wonderful and ever so accommodating. Dr Barbieri and colleagues were both helpful and professional. Each member of staff within the resort made us feel very comfortable and made a real effort to engage with us. The gym was fantastic and well equipped whilst the pools both (the heated indoor/outdoor and the lap pool) were pristine.

We had an amazing time during our stay and couldn’t recommend it enough.

Jo - March 2017

It’s rare to find such a place as Lefay, in such a beautiful location, the hotel exudes elegance, refinement and sophistication, everything you’d expect from a 5 star resort and more. One of Lefay’s best attributes is its homely and welcoming feel, from the staff, to the décor, the whole aura surrounding Lefay is one of comfort and peace.

The spa was world class, the treatments unbeatable and the food is cooked to perfection. I cannot say enough about this place, I simply loved the week I spent there. Perfect.

Paula - MARCH 2016

My stay at Lefay Resort was perfect and exactly what I needed. The staff were so helpful, my room lovely, and of course my fitness programme was exactly what I was hoping for, I really noticed results and most importantly I feel so much more motivated to work harder now that I'm back home. Thank you for your recommendation and ensuring everything went so smoothly for me.

Review: Lefay Resort & Spa, Italy spa review

Lefay Resort in Lake Garda, Italy

Reviewed by Susan d'Arcy

Set the scene

If you want a detox that doesn’t feel like denial, this eco-chic resort provides an elegant solution. Tapped into a mountainside overlooking Lake Garda , Lefay offers an intelligently tweaked version of la dolce vita, so it appeals as much to smart Euro couples on a ‘proper’ holiday (whom you'll find hogging the pool) as supermodels preparing for cover shoots (you’ll see them cloaked in bathrobes heading for the results-driven treatments). It manages this sleight of hand by bridging the ancient and the innovative with an ethos that is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) but embraces cutting-edge science. The people in white coats here really are qualified doctors rather than wannabes but they’re not going to treat you like children so if you decide to go off-piste from your customised menu.

What's the backstory?

Airline entrepreneurs may not be the obvious candidates to launch an environmentally friendly wellness destination but with the arrival of the 21st century Alcide and Liliana Leali, founders of Air Dolomiti, wanted to make a more meaningful contribution to tourism. Their ambition was to showcase a new concept of luxury wellbeing, where space, nature and science-based wellbeing advice were centre stage. A respect for the environment is a cornerstone of their future-proofed blueprint, which means sustainable and sympathetic architecture (the resort’s design is based on the tiered lemon groves, typical to the region), the use of local materials and energy-efficient heating and lighting systems were non-negotiables. For example, the resort now produces more than 75 per cent of its own electricity. Lefay opened on Lake Garda in 2008 and since then has won more than 70 international awards. In 2019, the couple opened a satellite spa in the Dolomites , which has quickly become a hit too.

What’s the wellness concept?

Lefay SPA Method blends TCM and Western techniques under the guidance of a handpicked scientific committee that includes some of the most renowned medical experts in the world, with specialisms ranging from gut health to gynaecology. Programmes cover the most prevalent health issues, such as stress, sleep deprivation and weight management. The committee regularly upgrades the offering to reflect the latest technology, research and global conditions so post-Covid, the spa has launched an Immune System and Intestine Programme. It aims to build resistance to infection through a combination of traditional Chinese therapies, such as acupuncture and tui na massage, and personalised diets, to support gut microflora. Arrival consultations are with qualified doctors, usually trained in both Western and complementary medicines, who tailor treatments to a guest’s personality as well as their ailments. Prescriptions will usually include Lefay’s own excellent herbal teas and nutritional supplements.

What are the signature treatments?

A vast list of treatments includes everything from cupping to cryotherapy. Try the rebalancing tui na with moxibustion for an appreciation of how powerful holistic massage can be in restoring equilibrium and confidence. It’s also worth booking a postural evaluation with one of the excellent physiotherapists.

Which therapist should I book?

Marco Pistore’s calming nature, extensive knowledge of holistic practices and intuitive ability to understand a guest's issues elevates even a walk to a thought-provoking therapy. Ask him to guide you through the resort's incredible Five Elements meditative trail. Personal trainer Veronica Tonni’s charm and humour help to keep guests motivated through exercise regimes that she has edited to realistic durations to enable busy people to keep up long term.

What makes it different?

The range of facilities is vastly superior to most spas . Apart from 21 treatment rooms, half with lake views, there are heated indoor and outdoor pools, training, ice and thalassotherapy pools and a garden whirlpools. There are six relaxation zones and seven saunas, including a glass-fronted Finnish sauna with panoramic lake views in the adults-only spa. The high-tech gym is vast, with various workout areas, a huge personal training studio and smaller yoga and tai chi studios. Outside, the resort’s enchanting 27 acres of Alto Garda National Park has workout stations and myriad walking and jogging trails. Many guests dress up for dinner: there’s a beauty salon for hair, nails and make-up.

What else do they offer?

The cuisine is mainly Mediterranean and the ethos moderation and personal accountability rather than set rules and weighed portions. Guests have loosely customised meal plans and all food is organic and nutrient dense. Dishes are tasty and artfully presented and you won’t go hungry – or thirsty. If you want a drink, there’s a wide selection of temptations – including some excellent regional wines. Most meals are taken in La Limonaia, which has wide decks with lake views as well as glitzy virginal white interiors. There are also pool and lobby bars and a cigar lounge (no kidding). Book at least one meal at the excellent Gramen, the resort’s plant- and fish-based fine-dining experience, with imaginative tasting menus inspired by the Energy and Therapeutic Garden that surrounds the restaurant. Stay outdoors for massages in private gazebos, glorious mountain hikes and to immerse in nature within the resort’s lush, landscaped grounds.

Where do you stay?

The 96 suites are an ode to stealth-wealth minimalism, decorated in natural tones that take their cue from the surrounding mountains and lake. They feature eco-friendly fabrics, with furniture and floors made from walnut and olive woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide natural light, and all rooms overlook Lake Garda and have a balcony or terrace. Stone and pink marble bathrooms have bathtubs and showers, stocked with Lefay Spa’s vegan toiletries, made from natural ingredients and medicinal plants. Public areas are glossy, generous spaces, with leather furniture, striking contemporary art and floor-to-ceiling windows that entice you out onto the terraces.

Book a session in the ‘salt lake’ for your day of arrival. This private floatation pool is in a huge, candle-lit cave (so none of the usual claustrophobic feelings) with loungers and experience showers that are a route-one to relaxation. It epitomises Lefay’s appeal: it makes wellness a sensuous pleasure, perfect for couples where one partner is a ‘non-believer’.

What it’s about: For a more factual understanding of the influential family that shaped the Italian Renaissance, you can’t go wrong with this 464-page tome. This evocative and masterful account of the dramatic history of the Medicis also covers their patronage of the day’s greatest minds (Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Galileo, among others), offering context and knowledge upon which you can draw during your next visit to Florence and greater Tuscany.

The mood it’s giving: The thrill and shock of Succession , but Florentine and, you know, real

The book’s first line: “It is Sunday 26 April 1478 in Florence, and the church bells ring out from the towers above the rooftops of the city.
What it’s about: This beloved classic of English literature, a satire of English society in the Edwardian era first published in 1908, opens at a hotel in Florence, Italy: Charlotte Bartlett and her cousin Lucy Honeychurch are positively incensed that their rooms face a drab courtyard (how dreadful!). A Room with a View by E. M. Forster

(The Merchant Ivory film adaptation is also stellar, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith.)

The mood it’s giving: That moment where Kim Kardashian is crying because she lost her diamond earring in the ocean in Bora Bora and her sister Kourtney telling her, “Kim, there’s people that are dying”—but in Florence

The book’s first line: “‘The Signora had no business to do it,” said Miss Bartlett, “no business at all. She promised us south rooms with a view close together, instead of which here are north rooms, looking into a courtyard, and a long way apart.”

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

What it’s about: There are many ways to do Italy on a budget, and there are just as many (if not more) ways to do it extravagantly. Perhaps that’s why our collective cultural imagination so often links the fantasy of the Italian Riviera with how the rich and famous behave—and behave badly. All that to say, Jess Walter’s Beautiful Ruins is a sweeping and swooning book that brilliantly dissects the power plays and petty dramas of our contemporary demigods (Hollywood stars), as well as the Italian seaside villages that everyone can access, even if it means swimming to get there.

The mood it’s giving: That one series of unbelievably glamorous photos of Paul Newman at the Venice Film Festival in 1963

The book’s first sentence: “The dying actress arrived in his village the only way one could come directly—in a boat that motored into the cove, lurched past the rock jetty, and bumped against the end of the pier.”

What it’s about: Yet another go-to-Italy-and-change-your-life classic, Frances Mayes’s memoir truly changed the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if this book—and the 2003 film adaptation—are responsible for a sizable chunk of Italy’s GDP. Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy by Frances Mayes

What it’s about: Yet another go-to-Italy-and-change-your-life classic, Frances Mayes’s memoir truly changed the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if this book—and the 2003 film adaptation —are responsible for a sizable chunk of Italy’s GDP. But yes, this story has surely inspired many non-Italians to visit the cypress-studded Tuscan countryside, hoping to come upon a rundown villa in need of restoration and love, just as Mayes does in this travel writing classic.

The mood it’s giving: A leisurely walk through a Tuscan farmer’s market, where you come upon the most sweet-tart tomato you’ve ever had, its sun-bright juice coating your lips

The book’s first line: “‘What are you growing here?’ The upholsterer lugs an armchair up the walkway to the house but his quick eyes are on the land.”

What it’s about: If Under the Tuscan Sun is an easy-going drive through the Italian heartland, then From Scratch is a journey of highs and lows along the hilly and rugged terrain of Sicily. Actor and writer Tembi Locke’s memoir tells her personal history of falling in love with her Italian husband, building a life together in Los Angeles, grieving him after his death due to cancer, and rebuilding her life with their daughter in Sicily. The book is heartfelt and Locke’s language is generous and graceful. If you’d rather binge the story on your screen, there’s a 2022 Netflix adaptation too.
What it’s about: Have you ever tasted a truffle? I mean, a true truffle that bursts with the flavor of Italian terroir? If you have, then you’ll relate to the author Ryan Jacobs when he describes tasting a white truffle: He felt transported, “momentarily, into an alternate universe, a place where flavor mattered more than truth and virtue.” And it’s true that pursuit of flavor stomps out virtue, as Jacobs reports it in this deep investigative dive into the industry and sub-world of truffles—where rival truffle hunters poison each other’s truffle-hunting dogs, where hunters carrying rifles protect their hunting grounds from spies, where counterfeits dupe even the most well-trained experts. The Truffle Underground: A Tale of Mystery, Mayhem, and Manipulation in the Shadowy Market of the World's Most Expensive Fungus by Ryan Jacobs

What it’s about: Have you ever tasted a truffle? I mean, a true truffle that bursts with the flavor of Italian terroir? The mood it’s giving: A crime documentary, but about truffles! I really can’t sell this book any better than the facts can

The book’s first line: “Threads of fungus swirl through the heat and dark of the rocky soil. They spend years twisting, extending, contorting, in perpetual search of nutrients to bring back to their host tree.”

The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante

What it’s about: Ask anyone about good books and Italian culture, and the name Elena Ferrante is bound to come up. The pseudonymous writer’s four novels—known as the Neapolitan Quartet, beginning with the epidemic My Brilliant Friend —seemed to be everywhere in the last decade in the English-speaking world, due in no small part to the genius translation work of Ann Goldstein from the original Italian. The mood it’s giving: The most observant and clear-eyed diary entries of an insightful young girl in Napoli

The book’s first sentence: “Two years before leaving home my father said to my mother that I was very ugly. The sentence was uttered under his breath, in the apartment that my parents, newly married, had bought at the top of Via San Giacomo dei Capri, in Rione Alto.”

What it’s about: On its surface, Jhumpa Lahiri’s In Other Words is a series of short essays and reflections about the task of learning Italian. But once you crack open this elegant volume, you’ll see it’s so much more: Lahiri first wrote the book in Italian (to all the better master the language), and the English translation was provided by Ann Goldstein (yes, who translates Ferrante as well); more unusual, both the Italian and the English stand side by side in the book, on opposite pages. Reading how Lahiri’s fluency and confidence with Italian flourishes alongside the evolving English translation is enough inspiration for anyone to at least pick up a tourist phrasebook for Italian. Of course, the 2017 film adaptation is better known for its atmospheric cinematography (think sun-baked peaches, glimmering Lombardian lakes, the worn-in grandeur of Villa Albergoni in Moscazzano) but the source material is better at conveying the intense limerence of young romance, the kind that a scenic Italian backdrop renders all the more heady and bittersweet.

The mood it’s giving: Summer, somewhere in Northern Italy, cascading melodies on the piano floating out from the villa’s windows and out onto the pomegranate orchard

The book’s first sentence: “‘Later!’ The word, the voice, the attitude. Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman

What it’s about: It’s now a tale as old as time: An eloquent and cerebral narrator recalls the time how he, as a young man in the 1980s, stayed at his family’s home in Northern Italy and was drawn to the graduate student his parents took under their wing for the summer—and how their mutual attraction led to a profound exploration of desire, intimacy, and what it means to lose it all.

The book’s first sentence: “‘ Later! ’ The word, the voice, the attitude. I’d never heard anyone use ‘later’ to say goodbye before. It sounded harsh, curt, and dismissive, spoken with the veiled indifference of people who may not care to see or hear from you again.”

Condé Nast Traveler reveals its Hot List for 2024

 • The Lana, Dorchester Collection in Dubai and The Guild restaurant were notable openings

A view of The Lana, Dorchester Collection in Dubai. Photo: Conde Nast Traveler

Condé Nast Traveler – the global premier travel publication – revealed its Hot List for 2024 on Wednesday, compiling its annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants, and cruise ships.

The winners were compiled by CNT editors, following a year’s worth of traveling the globe.

‘Sports tourism, train travel’: Condé Nast Traveler identifies biggest travel trends for 2024

Here is an overview of what they found:

Celebrity Ascent, Emerald Sakara and Explora I. and Icon of the Seas were among those that topped the list of best cruise ships, noted for impeccable amenities, services and interiors.

Chishuru and The Devonshire in London, Datil, Paris, Coqodaq, New York along with The Guild and Soul Kitchen in Dubai were all noted as best new restaurants.

The best new hotel openings around the globe were also noted:

In India, Mementos by ITC Hotels, Ekaaya Udaipur topped the list.

Regent Hong Kong and The Tokyo EDITION in Ginzaa were all top new hotels mentioned.

Dubai, Doha, London among top cities where international travellers loved to splurge in 2022

Middle East

In Dubai, newly-opened The Lana, Dorchester Collection – replete with the very first Dior Spa – marked the prestigious addition of the brand’s entry in the Middle East.

In Paris, 1 Place Vendôme is the first hotel from Swiss fine jewelry and watchmaker Chopard and the Scheufele family who have owned the brand since 1963. It is a members’ club as much as a hotel – only accessible to guests and their visitors.

The Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel, Cannes – a favorite with the festival set – as well as Mandarin Oriental in Greece all topped the list of new and refurbished openings.

Bulgari Hotel Roma, Rome, Palazzo Roma, Rome, The Peninsula Istanbul too made the cut.

Singapore tops ranking for most expensive city in the world for luxury living

United States

The Fifth Avenue Hotel New York along with Dawn Ranch, Sonoma, California and Fontainebleau Las Vegas were all notable openings.

United Kingdom

Broadwick Soho, London and Raffles at The OWO both topped the list of new openings.

Farasha Farmhouse in Morocco, Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island and Nikkei Cape Town, South Africa topped the Hot List 2024.
