How Much a Cruise Costs in 2024

Wondering how much you’ll spend to take a cruise? We have specific estimates (using actual figures from the cruise lines!) below.

Two ships in port of Cozumel

Before we get too far, however, you should know that just like buying a car, you can spend as much — or as little — as you want for your vacation .

For instance, are you happy with the lowest-cost interior cabin… or would you rather spend more for a balcony or a suite?

Or are you the sort of person who can only sail during the summer months (when prices are much higher), or can you sail during the off-season and save hundreds of dollars ?

From room types to when you sail to the cruise line you pick, they all have an impact on what you’ll spend.

That means tracking down the specific cost of a cruise for each person is difficult. But we can give you an idea of what a typical trip will cost based on averages and help you know better what you can plan to spend.

We get into all the details of how much a cruise costs — and exactly where you’ll spend money — below.

In This Article...

Where You’ll Spend Money on a Cruise

Think that the cost of a cruise is simply the fare that you pay to get on the ship? While that makes up the lion’s share of your spending, there’s a lot more that goes into the cost of your vacation.

Cruise Fare Of course, when most people think of the cost of a cruise, they are thinking mainly of the price of the cruise fare. This fare is what the cruise line charges for you to sail on the ship. Cruise fare includes your cabin, most meals, entertainment on the ship, access to pools, lounges, and more.

What it doesn’t include are the extras like alcoholic drinks, specialty restaurants, shore excursions, gambling and other things bought on board.

What you pay for your fare can vary widely. Factors that go into the price include the type of cabin you choose, length of cruise, when you sail, and even the ship and cruise line you sail.

Short cruises on budget cruise lines can run as little as a few hundred dollars, while long luxury trips can run well into the thousands — and even tens of thousands — of dollars per person.

Onboard Spending Think you’re done spending money after you buy your cruise fare? Think again. Once on the ship there are lots of extras that you will likely want to purchase that add to the cost of your cruise.

Onboard spending casts a wide net. It includes everything from money spent gambling in the casino to alcohol, specialty restaurants, cruise line shore excursions, and even the souvenirs you buy in the gift shop.

Ship keycard on top of cash money

Just like with the cruise fare, different people will spend different amounts. We’ve personally been on cruises and spent nothing extra on the ship. Other times we’ve spent hundreds.

If you’re frugal, you can get by with spending little. If you want to let loose and have fun, it will add hundreds (and maybe thousands) to your cruise fare. As a rule of thumb, expect to spend between 30-40% of your cruise fare in onboard spending. That’s around what the cruise companies show as the amount earned in onboard spending in their financial reports.

Gratuities If you’ve never sailed on a cruise before, you might be unsure of exactly what gratuities are and how they work.

These days gratuities are automatically charged to your account; everyone pays them. You can choose to prepay them when you buy your cruise, or have them charged to your onboard spending account and pay the balance at the end of your trip.

Rates vary across cruise lines, but are usually around $15 per person, per day. So a couple traveling on a seven-day cruise will pay about $200 in gratuities.

What do the charges go to? They are shared among the staff, with most going to your cabin steward. Waitstaff also receive a significant portion.  (For more on gratuities, see our complete guide here .)

Getting to the Ship (Transportation, Parking, Hotel) Whether you fly, ride, or drive to the port, you will have some more expenses that you have to consider for your budget.

cost of a year long cruise

Getting a ride to the port? Don’t forget to factor in the cost of transportation to get to and from the cruise ship.

Driving to the port? If so, know that most ports charge around $20 per day to park (although some hotels and independent parking lots offer discounted rates).

If you fly in for your cruise, then you need to factor in your airfare. We also suggest anyone flying in to arrive the day before you sail and get a hotel room, just to avoid any delays that might cause you to miss your ship.

Spending in Port Finally, the last part of your budget to consider is what you spend in port. Most of the time, this is actually relatively little as so much time is spent on the ship.

Excursions not booked through the cruise line would be in this section (those booked through the cruise line are onboard spending, mentioned above). Your port spending also includes things you do in port like catching a taxi to a beach, food and drink at a restaurant, or buying souvenirs.

One Note About Cruising in 2024

Of course the world has changed since the health crisis. Nowhere is that more the case than with cruising. The entire industry was shut down for almost all of 2020 and slowly made its return in 2021. After 2023, we can say that cruising is back with ships sailing at full capacity.

But just like on land, but there are bigger changes that could impact the cost of a cruise going forward.

Longer-Term Pricing During the stop, the major cruise companies took on massive amounts of debt to survive. Now as cruising resumes, they are focused on improving their balance sheets. That has meant higher pricing, if the market allows. Cruise lines have said repeatedly that demand is strong and onboard spending is at considerably higher levels than before the pause.

As well, several cruise lines sold off a number older, smaller ships. In general, older ships offer lower pricing. Along with the removal of older ships, new ships have come onto the market such as Carnival Celebration and Jubilee, as well as Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.

With more newer ships priced at a premium and a push to shore up balance sheets, longer term pricing seems likely to rise.

Inflation Pressures The biggest economic story of 2022 was inflation, and it didn’t stop at the water’s edge. It’s a worldwide issue that also impact cruise lines. Prices for many things, including services like wi-fi on cruise ships and gratuity charges have increased.

The good news is that following strong price increases since cruising returned, anecdotally it seems that the hikes have calmed for now. That said, don’t be surprised if prices still climb some in the coming year.

Average Total Cost of a Cruise in 2024

cost of a year long cruise

So with all these different things to spend money on, how much does it cost to take a cruise?

As we mentioned above, the cost of your specific cruise will vary. Those who want an interior cabin will spend less than those sailing a suite. And people who can sail during the spring or fall will save hundreds versus sailing in the summer.

But we have some estimates below to give you an idea of the cost of taking a cruise.

Cruise Fare ($150-$245 per day) Obviously it’s impossible to give you a specific cost of your cruise fare. There are so many different factors that go into what you’ll pay, including:

  • Cruise line
  • Specific ship
  • Date of cruise
  • Trip length

That means the price you pay will see a wide range . Sailings can be less than $100 per person, per day, into several hundreds of dollars each day.

That said, we can get a good idea of what you’ll spend. All the major cruise lines are public companies that publish annual figures for their revenue and passenger statistics.

From these public reports, we know that the average cost of cruise fare runs from about $150-$245 per person, per day (depending on cruise company).

For example, in the trailing 12 months (the latest data available publicly), Carnival Corporation — which owns several different lines including Carnival, Princess, Cunard, and others — took in $12.8 billion in ticket revenue, and sailed 86.0 million passenger days. That comes out to $149 per person, per day.

Royal Caribbean Group was slightly higher based on their last 12 months of financial reports, ($175 per person, per day), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. came in at the top of our list ($245 per person, per day).

Of course, those figures are averages across the entire company. Specific cruises can be much lower… or much higher… depending on your specifics. For example, sailing an interior cabin is drastically cheaper than sailing in a balcony room. And cruises departing in January or February are less expensive than sailing at the height of summer.

Still, these figures should give you a good idea of the average cost of a cruise based on what others pay across different cruise companies.

Port Fees and Taxes (~$100-$200 per person)

Port fees and taxes aren’t technically part of your cruise fare, but they are included in what you pay before you board.

So how much will you pay?

The amount varies depending on your specific route as different ports charge different fees. In our experience, for most cruises expect to spend between $100 and $200 per person on these fees and taxes. Some cruises with fewer ports will be less.

As a rule of thumb, the more ports of call, the higher these fees can be. On some cruises they can definitely be more than $200, but we’ve rarely seen them below $100 — except for some of the shortest trips with only one or two stops.

Onboard Spending (~$85-$120 per day) By far the biggest expense of taking a cruise is the fare, but onboard spending can be a considerable chunk of change.

So how much will you spend? We dove into detail about spending on a cruise ship before . Cruise lines also break down how much cruise passengers spend in their financial reports. On average across cruise lines, the amount comes out to between $85-120 per person, per day.

Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Group saw an average around $85 per person, per day in the last year. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. saw closer to $120 per person each day.

But you should know that this doesn’t mean you’ll be spending that much each day. With the accounting rules used by the cruise lines, sometimes money spent before you get on the ship is actually classified as “onboard and other” spending .

So if you buy a bundle package that includes your cruise fare and drink package, wi-fi, and other goodies (such as NCL’s “Free at Sea” offer) all in one transaction, some of that is considered onboard spending and some is the cruise fare.

As well, keep in mind that this is simply an average across all cruise passengers and major cruise lines. What you spend could be drastically different. For instance, some people spend little or no money on the ship. Others purchase drink packages, gamble in the casino, and generally live it up the entire trip.

In fact, onboard spending is the area where you have the most control over what you’ll spend .

Gratuities (~$16-20 per day) Yes, you can adjust the amount of gratuities if your service is particularly poor. In reality, not many people do. Expect to spend about $16-20 per person, per day.

Gratuities may be slightly higher or lower depending on the cruise line. As well, suites have higher gratuity rates compared to lower-tier cabins. So while you might pay $16 per day for a normal cabin, that amount might be $18 per day (or more) if staying in a suite.

Note that this amount doesn’t include gratuities charged for extras like alcoholic beverages on the ship. Those are extra in addition to the automatic gratuities charged to each passenger that go to the waitstaff and room steward.

Getting to the Ship/Parking/Hotel (Varies) The amount that it will cost you to get to the ship, park, and/or a hotel stay will vary based on your needs.

Some people just get dropped off at the port by a friend or family member, so it costs them nothing. Others have to book a cross-country flight and a hotel stay the night before.

If you drive to the port, plan to spend around $20 per day for parking, depending on the port. Hotels in most port cities can be found for between $150-250 per night. Rides to the port using services like a taxi or Uber/Lyft can vary considerably depending on where you are coming from. Still, you don’t want to forget these considerable expenses in cruising.

Spending in Port (~$50 per port) What you spend in port can vary widely. Remember anything you eat or drink off the ship will come out of pocket and isn’t included in your cruise fare. As well, things like taxis and souvenirs are also extra.

As a rule of thumb, we estimate a budget of about $50 per person, per port of call. For some ports that may be too much. For instance, cruise line private islands often have much of what you need already included. Other ports might include a stop at a restaurant, some souvenir shopping, and buying drinks.

Summing Up the Total Cost of a Cruise

So what’s the grand total?

The chart below lays out the costs of taking a cruise, using the estimated amounts mentioned above. We’ve also laid out the estimates for both a shorter cruise (five days) and the traditional seven-day trip.

Keep in mind that these are just estimates, per person . A couple would expect to double these prices.

As well, remember that what you spend will vary widely based on any number of factors , including your own budgeting for the trip and how much you let loose on your vacation.

Sailing in the off-season like January or February? Then your cruise fare can be considerably less than average. Are you a big spender on the ship? Then your vacation will obviously end up costing more.

But as you can see, on a per-person basis the cost for a 7-day cruise can run around $2,000 when you factor in everything you’ll spend. Shorter cruises will run around $1,500 .

Want To Cruise Around The World? Here’s How Much A World Cruise Really Costs

World cruises are often seen as the pinnacle of cruising itineraries. While few actually circumvent the entire globe, they are spectacular lengthy cruises that incorporate at least two continents and give you the chance to explore the world in style.

Fred. Olsen Borealis

But understandably, world cruises are not cheap. So how much are they exactly, and what kind of options are you looking at if you want to choose a long-term cruise as a dream holiday? Let’s find out.

How much does a cruise around the world cost?

World cruises start from around $10,000 per person and can cost as much as $839,999 per person if you choose the best suite on the most luxurious cruise line. Expect to pay around $15,000 to $25,000 on a mainstream cruise line, and between $60,000 and $100,000 on a luxury cruise line, on average.

Factors affecting the price of a world cruise

Every world cruise is different so the price really depends on a lot of things. When asking how much does a round-the-world cruise cost, you need to look at various factors:

1. Duration

World cruises are not a standard length, and unsurprisingly, a 6-month cruise around the world is going to cost more than a 4-month world cruise. That’s an extra 60 or so days of your room, food, entertainment and so on.

Typically the shortest round-the-world itineraries are around 100 nights or so, and most world cruises are 4-month itineraries lasting around 130 nights. Six-month-long world cruises are a little rarer, although Oceania Cruises usually has a 180-night itinerary to enjoy.

There are some longer world cruises, such as Royal Caribbean’s incredible 274-night sailing which set sail in 2023 – that’s nine months long.

World Cruise Map

Supposed to set sail in November 2023 was the first ever three-year-long world cruise. The new cruise line Life At Sea Cruises originally offered this itinerary on their ship MV Gemini, with a starting price of around $90,000 per person. However, it was cancelled last minute when the cruise line couldn’t secure a replacement ship, after MV Gemini was deemed not to be seaworthy for the itinerary.

Life-At-Sea-Cruises

Many would say that if you spend more than a year on a ship, you’re pretty much living there. That is an option, too. Check out my guide to living on a cruise ship permanently to see how much that costs.

What length of world cruise is best?

If you have the time for a longer cruise then go for it – it won’t just be filled with sea days, but you’ll instead see more ports. But of course, the cost will be higher, so budget is as much a concern as your time.

An alternative option is to look at segments – most cruise lines will break their itineraries up into segments, so you can book say a 30-night or 40-night sailing on the ship as part of the world cruise. These are good compromises if you don’t have the time or money for the full itinerary.

2. Cruise Line

As it is with any cruise, the choice of cruise line will impact how much your world cruise sets you back. Cruising on a mainstream cruise line like MSC or Princess Cruises is always going to be less expensive than choosing a luxury cruise operator like Seabourn or Silversea.

Seabourn cruise ship

You need to consider what type of cruise you enjoy though, and what you want from your ship. Luxury cruise lines may have less to do during the day, but a higher standard of service. The entertainment, the choice of restaurants and bars, and the facilities, are even more important on a world cruise than a regular cruise because you’re on the ship for so long.

Don’t settle for a cruise line that doesn’t fit your vacation style, since you might end up not enjoying the experience. And a six-month cruise that you don’t enjoy is a long one.

2. Stateroom Type

Again, just like booking any cruise, the choice of stateroom will determine how much you have to pay. World cruises are always advertised with a “from” price for the most basic staterooms on the ship, usually inside cabins.

On a 7-night or 14-night cruise, an inside cabin is fine for most people. You can easily wander up to the deck to enjoy the view when you want to. But on a longer itinerary, having a window or a balcony may be a higher priority for you.

Here’s the room I stayed in when I joined the world cruise on Borealis . Paying several thousands of pounds more for a window is a lot, but many would say it’s worth it.

Ocean View Room on Borealis

And then, of course, there’s the even better option of a suite if you have the funds available. The suite perks may be even more valuable over a longer itinerary.

As a guide, here’s a look at one of the cheapest, one of the longest and one of the most expensive world cruises, with a guide to the different prices depending on stateroom choice:

Ambassador Cruise Line’s World Cruise Prices

Suite on Ambassador Ambience

Royal Caribbean’s 274-night Ultimate World Cruise

Serenade of the Seas Junior Suite

Regent Seven Seas’ Ultra-Luxury World Cruise 2027

Regent Seven Seas Penthouse Suite

3. Inclusions

One of the biggest differences, when you work out the total cost of your world cruise, will depend on what’s included as standard with the upfront fare.

There are a lot of additional costs you might rack up during a long world cruise itinerary, including:

  • WiFi internet access
  • Speciality dining
  • Shore excursions

That last one is often overlooked because on a normal cruise you might never need the laundry service – but good luck packing 274 different outfits for your Royal Caribbean cruise!

Many cruise lines will include more of these as standard in their world cruise fares. What you’d normally pay for separately will be incorporated into the fare. For example, Royal Caribbean includes WiFi, drinks, tips and laundry in the Ultimate World Cruise fare, and normally you’d pay extra.

Royal Caribbean drinks

So bear that in mind when you compare world cruises – because you need to budget for the whole thing, including any extra you’ll have to spend while on the ship.

4. Travelling solo

World cruise prices – and most cruises in general – will always be advertised with a price that is “per person, based on two sharing”.

So if you’re intending to cruise solo, bear in mind that your cruise will cost more – sometimes as much as taking a second person along anyway!

It varies and with an itinerary as long as a world cruise you will often find special solo rates. They won’t be quite as cheap as the regular per-person rate but they should be better than paying the full price of two passengers.

What is the best around-the-world cruise?

The best around-the-world cruise depends on what kind of cruise you want.

Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise, if they repeat it, is a good option for families with pre-school or homeschooled kids and younger travellers.

Serenade of the Seas

A lot of people who go on world cruises tend to be in retirement age though, so may be looking for either something more luxurious – like a Regent Seven Seas or a Silversea cruise – as that special dream holiday they’ve worked for all their lives.

However, you might find it tricky to get a place onboard one of Regent Seven Seas’ world cruises. Each year, they sell out before they even open for bookings ! So the only way to get a place is to be a loyal past customer, or join the waitlist and hope that someone cancels.

Seven Seas Mariner

And for those who don’t have the budget for a luxury option, the ‘best’ world cruise might be the one that’s most affordable, and that’s the cruise offered by Ambassador Cruise Lines.

Ambassador Ambience

There isn’t just one type of cruise passenger, and so there isn’t one single type of world cruise that best fits everyone. “Best” is very subjective.

World Cruises: Cheapest to Most Expensive

Here’s a look at all the world cruises you either can currently book, or that have been on sale in the last couple of years, ranked from cheapest to most expensive based on the per-night cost. Obviously, the different cruises range in length, so a per-night cost is the fairest way of ranking them.

The prices are for the cheapest available stateroom and will be higher if you want to upgrade.

Crystal Serenity

How much does a Regent Seven Seas world cruise cost?

An ultra-luxury world cruise with Regent Seven Seas starts at $91,499 per person for a 140-night itinerary, meaning a per-night cost of $654. But the Regent Suite is the most expensive world cruise ever, at almost $1.7 million per couple.

Seven Seas Splendor

How much does a Silversea world cruise cost?

Silversea’s 2025 world cruise lasts for 136 nights and starts at $99,000 per person, meaning a per-day cost of $728. The luxury world cruise sails from Tokyo to New York via Asia, Africa and both the Mediterranean and Northern Europe before crossing the Atlantic via Iceland and the Arctic.

Silver Dawn

To Conclude

World cruises are definitely worth the cost if you have the money available. It is the easiest way to see the world, since your ship takes you to all sorts of interesting and exotic destinations, and you don’t have the hassle of constantly packing and flying between each country.

If you want to get the best price on your world cruise, you’ll want to book early – they are very popular itineraries and often go on sale as much as 3 years in advance.

Book the cheapest stateroom category you’re comfortable with, and try to take advantage of whatever free drinks there are on board if drinks aren’t included. Otherwise, over 3-6 months, you could rack up quite the bill!

And don’t forget to choose an itinerary that covers everywhere you want to visit. It’s worth looking at the top 10 ports in the world (according to the experts) if you need inspiration.

Just How Expensive Is a World Cruise? And Is It Worth It?

Kristine Hansen

  • Travel News
  • Cruises & Crossings

We break down the cost.

As travelers, we’re so used to paying piecemeal for vacations—booking airfare here, the hotel or Airbnb there, and splurging on meals and drinks upon arrival. We don’t often realize the true total cost as it’s stretched across several payments and to many sources.

That’s what makes the steep price tag ( from $14,719 to $105,500 per person based on double occupancy in 2022 , plus taxes and port fees) , of a world cruise seem like sticker shock. But is it really? World cruises (cruises that last around 100 to 180 nights) may seem expensive, but when you factor in having a roof over your head, getting to experience many countries, with all noshing and imbibing included, they’re actually not that expensive.

A Hack to Make It Affordable

Ever consider renting out your house or apartment via sites like Airbnb.com or VRBO.com ? Imagine raking in cash while sipping margaritas on your private patio in the open ocean. Airbnb.com listings in New York City command between $80 and $144 per night, on average, more during peak season, so if you hosted for the duration of a world cruise, you might put $8,000+ (plus taxes and cleaning fees) back in your bank account to cover your rent or mortgage.

Make sure you check about city ordinances, however, as some allow 30-night minimums per reservation. You can always stipulate that in your listing, too. Some condo and apartment buildings are not too keen on long-term guests so it’s best to check with the landlord or condo association. Another option to find a long-term renter is to contact local universities for leads on graduate students or visiting faculty.

Or, if you’re lucky enough to be pondering a move—whether in the same town or out of state—consider moving your items into a storage unit for rent and mortgage-free living.

The Cost of a World Cruise

Several cruise lines already booking short (3- to 7-night sails) in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, California coast or Mexico have also entered the world-cruise market. Among those companies embarking on world cruises are Crystal Cruises , Holland America Line , MSC Cruises , Oceania Cruises , P & O Cruises , Princess Cruises , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Seaborn Cruise Line , and Silversea Cruises .

Of that group, the most expensive are Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seaborn Cruise Line, and Silversea Cruises while you can find more affordable fares ($12,000-$30,000) on Holland America, MSC Cruises, and Princess Cruises.

Here are two types of itineraries:

This 111-day world cruise round-trip from Los Angeles on Princess Cruises visits 48 ports (Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Oman, Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, Canary Islands, Portugal, Florida, Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Mexico). Cost: $18,499+

This 180-day world cruise from Los Angeles to New York City on Oceania Cruises travels to Hawaii, French Polynesia, Samoa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, India, South Africa, Namibia, Gambia, Senegal, Spain, France, U.K., Netherlands, Ireland, and Canada. Cost: $39,999+

What a World Cruise Should Include

As any seasoned cruise-goer knows, it’s important to analyze various packages and itineraries offered by cruise lines. It’s too easy to get sucked in by a $499 offer for a 7-night sail in the Caribbean, only to learn the cabin is like a closet, you only get off once, and the ship is 15 years old. Even with a week-long cruise, it’s virtually impossible to not spend additional money on board if you want to live a little. We’re not talking about buying gemstones in the jewelry store—this is more about evening cocktails or fitness classes. Don’t fall victim to world-cruise itineraries that nickel and dime you at exponentially higher rates than these shorter cruises.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to pick the package right for you:

Do you plan to enjoy pre-dinner cocktails every night?

Look for a cruise with a beverage package or note when drinks are included.

Are you a morning cappuccino drinker or is drip coffee alright?

Many cruise lines charge extra for espresso or fancy coffee drinks, while grabbing plain drip coffee through room service or at restaurants costs nothing.

Will you be needing internet access to check in with colleagues and family back home, or be working remotely?

Shop around Wi-Fi packages (if your cruise line includes one) because it takes many, many days to cross the ocean with few port stops. You can also confirm their reliability by checking out forums on sites like CruiseCritic.com .

For the night owls and highly social, we also recommend looking for packages with built-in entertainment. Look for an itinerary with nightly options like live music, Broadway-esque musicals, quiz and game shows, stand-up performances, or casinos. Cruise lines often have their own programming, with activities that may sound cheesy (a newlywed-type game show) but can actually be fun and elicit plenty of laughs.

A world cruise should also include (or offer at an affordable price) dry-cleaning and laundry services as well as healthy-dining options. Another way to stay healthy when not in port is to utilize a fitness center or walking track on the ship.

And while a windowless cabin may be fine when you’re island-hopping in the Caribbean for a week, seven straight days in the ocean with no stops might sink you into a depression. If your budget allows, consider springing for an ocean-view cabin or one with a balcony.

Compared With an All-inclusive Vacation, a Cruise Doesn’t Cost Much More

If you’ve ever stayed at an all-inclusive resort you know the truth in advertising: Everything you could possibly need, from the moment you check in until you turn in your key card, is supposedly included in your stay. This includes the nightly room rate, dining at a variety of restaurants, your morning coffee, swimming-pool and beach access, room service, cultural classes, live music, drinks, and more. Rarely are there additional fees, but additional costs like splurging on a top-level bottle of wine, dropping the children off at the kids’ club, or booking a massage at the spa always come up.

Say you were to book four weeks at an all-inclusive in Riviera Maya, Mexico, in February. Based on Expedia.com, the cost would be anywhere from $5,430 to $17,910 (plus taxes). And that’s before any of your sure-to-come-up extra purchases.

The Value of a World Cruise

Some world cruises take you to a dozen countries, which is impressive if you’re trying to rack up passport stamps. What would it cost if you independently visited six of these countries, including booking airfare to all of those destinations? Say you live in or near Los Angeles and you plan to visit the countries on the Princess Cruises itinerary mentioned above. This means buying plane tickets to two U.S. states (Hawaii and Florida) and 24 countries. As airfare costs fluctuate greatly, let’s say each ticket to a destination is $500 one-way. You’ve just spent $13,000 on airfare. This makes the $18,449 world-cruise fare suddenly more affordable, right? And this is before factoring in lodging or food.

The Verdict

Not sure if a world cruise is for you? The answer is simple: If you’re a person who likes to stay at luxury resorts, have all the decisions made for you, and wants to see the world, then a world cruise is your ideal vacation.

“This is the world cruise of world cruises,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “To travellers asking themselves where they should go next, we say everywhere.”

And the cost of going everywhere?

Guests ready to traverse the world can book the full Ultimate World Cruise today or choose from any of the four expeditions that will offer a wide range of destinations as soon as December 2021 – the Americas, Asia-Pacific, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

Round the Horn: Americas and Antarctica Expedition

Dec. 10, 2023 - Feb. 11, 2024 – Three continents, 36 destinations, four wonders

The once-in-a-lifetime journey begins in Miami, the cruise capital of the world, and sets course for postcard-perfect Caribbean destinations – like the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) – before heading to glacier-studded Antarctica and around Cape Horn. Travellers can take in four of the world’s stunning wonders along the way in Central and South America, including Chichen Itza in Cozumel, Mexico; the largest art deco sculpture in the world, Christ the Redeemer, in Rio de Janeiro – where they’ll celebrate New Year’s Eve – and the largest waterfall system on the planet, Iguazu Falls near Buenos Aires, Argentina. One of the most iconic symbols of ancient Inca civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu, awaits in Peru, while sunshine and glamour will welcome guests in Los Angeles.

Wonders of Asia and the Pacific Expedition

Feb. 11 - May 9, 2024 – Three continents, 40 destinations, three wonders

Guests will venture miles from the ordinary in Oceania, Asia and beyond on the cruise’s next showstopping leg. They can discover the beauty and adventure throughout the Hawaiian Islands’ world-renowned mountainous landscapes and black sand beaches before sailing south to Moorea and Tahiti, French Polynesia, for sapphire blue skies and crystal-clear waters. The thrills continue with an exploration of New Zealand, before a deep-dive into Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – the only living thing on the planet that’s visible from space. Pristine natural beauty in Bali, Indonesia, is soon followed by two of the most iconic manmade world wonders, the Great Wall of China and India’s Taj Mahal, and gems of the South Pacific – from Vietnam to Malaysia. Rounding out the expedition are endless possibilities in Japan, with unparalleled culture in Tokyo, street food in Osaka and the tropical beaches of Okinawa.

Middle East Treasures and Marvels of the Med Expedition

May 9 - July 10, 2024 – Three continents, 44 destinations, four wonders

This expedition begins in glamorous Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and brings many of history’s greatest mysteries, myths and legends to life. Adventurers can uncover ancient sites and more world wonders from the times of emperors and pharaohs, like Jordan’s lost city of Petra, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, Turkey, and the Colosseum in Rome. There are also less-travelled places to explore, such as Greece’s Olympia, once a sanctuary site to honour Zeus and the location of the first Olympic games. The journey only continues to even more destinations known for their storied history — like Split, Croatia, and Cannes and Provence in France.

Capitals of Culture

July 10 - Sept. 10, 2024 – Three continents, 40 destinations

The final leg of the Ultimate World Cruise is an immersive, cultural experience that begins in the Mediterranean and heads north. At travellers’ fingertips is the opportunity to discover Barcelona’s brilliant architecture, including Antoni Gaudi’s famed Sagrada Familia and whimsical Park Guell, and savour new flavours across continents — such as an indulgent lunch in a Parisian bistro and a dinner of tagine and mint tea in Morocco. Museums, theatres and galleries line the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia, while larger-than-life fjords await in Norway. Guests can reflect on their epic voyage in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland before visiting New York on their way back to Miami.

From start to finish, guests who book the full Ultimate World Cruise can expect a seamless, world-class travel experience that includes business class airfare, premium transportation as well as an evening of festivities and accommodations at a five-star hotel before setting sail. How Much Does a Year Long Cruise Cost?

By Anna Duncan

If you’re considering a year-long cruise, you might be wondering how much it will cost. The answer, of course, depends on a variety of factors. In this article, we’ll break down some of the main expenses to help you get a better idea of what to expect.

Accommodation

One of the biggest expenses when it comes to cruising is accommodation. If you’re planning on spending an entire year on a cruise ship, you’ll need to pay for a cabin or suite. The cost of these accommodations can vary widely depending on the cruise line, ship, and cabin type.

Cabin Types

  • Inside cabins: These are typically the most affordable option and don’t have windows or balconies.
  • Oceanview cabins: These cabins have windows or portholes that offer views of the ocean.
  • Balcony cabins: These cabins have private balconies that offer even better views.
  • Suites: Suites are larger and more luxurious than standard cabins and often come with additional amenities like butler service.

Cruise Lines

Different cruise lines also offer different types of accommodations at varying price points. Some popular options for year-long cruises include:

  • Crystal Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Silversea Cruises

Food and Drink

Another major expense when it comes to cruising is food and drink. Most cruise lines include meals in the cost of your ticket, but some specialty restaurants may require an additional fee. Alcohol and other beverages may also come at an extra cost.

Dining Options

  • Main dining room: Most cruise ships have a main dining room where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner included in your ticket price.
  • Buffet: Many cruise ships also have a buffet that offers a variety of options throughout the day.
  • Specialty restaurants: Some ships have specialty restaurants that offer a more upscale dining experience for an additional fee.

Excursions and Activities

When you’re not on the ship, you’ll likely want to take part in excursions and activities at the various ports of call. These can be an additional expense, but they can also be some of the most memorable parts of your trip.

Excursion Options

  • City tours: Guided tours of cities or towns near the port.
  • Nature hikes: Hiking or walking tours through natural areas like forests or parks.
  • Water sports: Activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, or kayaking.
  • Cultural experiences: Visiting museums, historical sites, or cultural events.

The Bottom Line

So how much does a year-long cruise cost? It’s hard to give an exact number since there are so many variables involved. However, as a general rule of thumb, you can expect to pay anywhere from $30,000 to $200,000 or more depending on your cabin type and cruise line.

Of course, there are ways to save money on a year-long cruise. Booking early and looking for deals can help bring down the overall cost. You may also be able to save money by opting for less expensive excursions or by limiting your alcohol consumption on board.

You can live at sea from $38,500 a year on this cruise ship that will circle the globe for three years — see inside

  • Life at Sea Cruises will operate a three-year cruise around the world starting in November.
  • The cruise starts at a little over $38,500 per person per year for a 145-square-foot interior stateroom.
  • See what life will be like aboard the roughly 30-year-old MV Gemini.

Travelers who have dreamt of living at sea can finally do so this November.

cost of a year long cruise

Life at Sea Cruises will give travelers the opportunity to spend three years on a cruise ship while sailing around the world. Pricing starts at a little over $231,000 per person for the full three-year itinerary.

cost of a year long cruise

The vessel will begin its globetrotting affair in Istanbul on November 1, but will also pick up guests in Barcelona and Miami.

cost of a year long cruise

The ship has 627 cabins to accommodate up to 1,074 travelers. Throughout the three years, these seafarers will travel over 130,000 miles to 375 ports in 135 countries.

cost of a year long cruise

Along the way, they'll see all seven continents while visiting destinations like several of the Wonders of the World; Half Moon Island, Antarctica; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Seoul, South Korea.

cost of a year long cruise

Most around-the-world cruises spend several hours or up to two nights at ports of call.

cost of a year long cruise

But industry veteran Mike Petterson, the managing director of Life at Sea Cruises and the brainpower behind the new brand, said this isn't enough time to explore larger destinations like Beijing, China.

cost of a year long cruise

So instead, the Gemini will dock for up to seven nights in one destination.

cost of a year long cruise

This includes one week each in Shanghai and Singapore, which will also double as wet docks. If the ship has to head into a dry dock for repairs, Life at Sea passengers will be put up in a hotel.

Petterson conceived of Life at Sea before the COVID-19 pandemic and partnered with Miray International's Miray Cruises in late 2022 to turn this concept into a reality.

The new company will use Miray's cruise ship workers and the Gemini, one of its three ships.

cost of a year long cruise

Throughout the three years at sea, the Gemini will spend 288 overnights at different ports, averaging about two nights per destination.

cost of a year long cruise

A trip to any of these locations could cost the typical globetrotter hundreds or thousands of dollars in travel and accommodation fees.

However, passage on Life at Sea's Gemini will alleviate upfront costs for travelers by giving them the option to spread payments out over the course of three years.

But don't expect a glittering new hotel at sea with all the bells and whistles of a novel mega ship.

The upper-premium, 30-year-old vessel was refurbished last year. And the team is now spending an additional $10 million renovating the interior.

Think of the Gemini as a floating city with its own security, medical center, and offices with Starlink WiFi.

No city would be complete without a jail and a morgue. Luckily (or unluckily) the Gemini has both.

Cruise lines like Royal Caribbean have seen record-breaking demand for giant cruise ships that can accommodate thousands of travelers.

But Life at Sea is taking a more scaled-down approach to the floating hotel.

cost of a year long cruise

Seafarers will have access to typical cruise ship amenities, which include four lounges, a golf simulator, and a sundeck with a pool.

cost of a year long cruise

For meals at sea, passengers can dine at one of the two primary dining rooms, the restaurant on the pool deck, or order food anywhere on the ship using its app.

cost of a year long cruise

But unlike the average cruise vessel, the Gemini will also have amenities like a robust business center and a hospital with a pharmacy and dentist.

cost of a year long cruise

Like any all-inclusive cruise, these extras — including hospital visits — won't come at an additional cost.

cost of a year long cruise

These around-the-world cruises are often booked by retirees.

cost of a year long cruise

But Petterson says Life at Sea is targeting an incrementally younger demographic: pre-retirees, generally people between 55 to 65 years of age.

cost of a year long cruise

To accommodate the remote workers, the business center — which will replace the ship's casino — will have meeting rooms, offices, and a library.

cost of a year long cruise

Days at sea with no land in sight is inevitable for transoceanic itineraries: Travelers on the Gemini will have at least 300 of these sailing days.

cost of a year long cruise

To stave off boredom, travelers can spend their days around the ship's lounges, attending seminars and shows, or resting in their cabins.

The cheapest and smallest stateroom measures 130 square feet and starts at $90,000 per person for the three-year trip.

cost of a year long cruise

Like any cruise ship, interior staterooms can feel dingy.

cost of a year long cruise

To prevent this, these cabins will come with screens that will display a live view of the ocean, creating a virtual "window."

cost of a year long cruise

For those looking to spend more cash, the most expensive cabin — a suite with a balcony — will run travelers nearly $330,000 in total.

cost of a year long cruise

These staterooms pale in comparison to the over 1,000-square-foot suites on several modern cruise ships.

cost of a year long cruise

But according to Petterson, at least they're more affordable: "It's meant more for the mass market and retirees as opposed to doctors with trophy wives."

cost of a year long cruise

Travelers can either pay monthly or pay the entire three years upfront with the option to finance the payment.

cost of a year long cruise

However, they can't book shorter legs of the trip. It's all three years or nothing.

cost of a year long cruise

For those with commitment issues, there's also the option to divide travel with another passenger, taking turns spending time on the ship.

cost of a year long cruise

Three years without seeing friends and family can be a long time. Luckily, they're welcome as well.

cost of a year long cruise

They can either crash on a roll-in bed in a resident's stateroom, stay in a guest cabin, or stay in a passenger's stateroom while they are off the ship.

cost of a year long cruise

Reservations for Life at Sea's Gemini open on March 1.

cost of a year long cruise

Petterson says the company already has about 20 people who are ready to book.

cost of a year long cruise

Launching sales seven months ahead of the journey may seem risky for an industry that often relies on bookings a year in advance.

However, Petterson, a self-described "optimist," expects the ship will sail at an over 55% occupancy rate at any given time as world cruises have skyrocketed in popularity over the last two years.

cost of a year long cruise

Over the last few years, around-the-world sailings have been booking well despite the long-term commitment.

cost of a year long cruise

For travelers like retirees and remote workers, this extended life at sea promises peaceful afternoons and the opportunity to slowly travel the world with minimal planning.

Monthslong around-the-world cruises have been selling in record time in 2021 and 2022.

Best World Cruises of 2024 And 2025

cost of a year long cruise

If a seven-night cruise doesn't seem long enough, perhaps a world cruise featuring 100-plus nights of lavish galas, hobnobbing with interesting fellow passengers and visits to faraway lands might be more your style?

World cruises continue to be enduringly popular thanks to their innovative itineraries and modern technology that makes it easier than ever to stay in touch when you're spending several months -- to half a year -- onboard.

Whether you want to dream big or live large, here's the rundown of upcoming 2024 and 2025 world cruise options.

On This Page

What should you know about world cruises, 2024 world cruises, 2025 world cruises.

10 Reasons You're Paying Too Much for Your Cruise (Photo: Paul Gauguin Cruises)

World cruises come in all shapes and sizes. Prospective travelers will find sailings as long as 180 nights on Oceania's "180 Days Around the World" voyages, while some lines -- like Cunard, Silversea, and MSC -- are now running two or more World Cruises in a given calendar year. This means there are more opportunities than ever before to take one of these bucket list cruises.

A few things to note: Many world cruises don't sail fully around the world, though they do offer a chance to see a varied portfolio of diverse cultures all in one sailing. Also, if you can't commit to a full world cruise in 2024, you can often book a "segment" of the voyage, typically ranging from a week to more than a month in duration.

World cruises usually begin in January and end in April or May, but some lines change it up with departures in other seasons, including summer and early winter. Cruise itineraries are still under development for 2025 and future years, so watch this space for more information as it becomes available.

This New ‘Standby’ Cruise Fare Costs Just $49 Per Day—but Is It Worth It?

Would you be willing to wait at a port city with your bags packed, hoping to board a cruise at the last minute, all in order to secure one of the cheapest cruise deals out there? Holland America—with its industry-first standby fare offerings—is betting yes.

The line’s new Standby List Program allows travelers to put their names on a list of prospective passengers to be confirmed for a voyage if there are unsold rooms on the ship. Standby cruisers only pay $49 a day, but they receive as little as two days’ notice to get ready for the trip.

For flexible travelers, the scheme offers the possibility of huge savings. Here’s everything cruisers should know about sailing on standby.

How do the fares work?

To get on the standby list, travelers can select an itinerary on Holland America's list of standby-eligible voyages and call 877-724-5425 to join. (You can also have your travel advisor add you to the standby list on your behalf.)

Once you're on the list, you'll be charged $49 per person per day (not including taxes, fees and port expenses, which can cost several hundred dollars more). If you’re not selected for the cruise, you’ll receive a full refund.

When the week of the sailing arrives, the cruise line will start notifying standby passengers whether they made the cut. Guests are confirmed for their sailings in the order they were added to the standby list, so signing up early counts. Would-be passengers should expect to hear their status between seven to two days before the voyage’s departure.

Travelers who aren’t confirmed within two days of the sailing’s departure receive an immediate refund. Truly spontaneous travelers can choose to cut things even closer with a more nail-biting option: They can opt to remain on the standby list all the way up until 90 minutes before departure to see if there’s a no-show. If that doesn't work out, they’ll still get a full refund.

The deal could offer major savings to group travelers who have a bit of flexibility this summer, as the third and fourth guests in a stateroom can travel nearly for free—they would just be on the hook for taxes and fees. But young families are not eligible for cruising standby, as the fares are only available for travelers ages 21 and older. Since it would be a major gamble to travel long distances for an unconfirmed trip, the standby option makes the most sense for people who live in or near eligible ports like Vancouver , Seattle , San Diego , Fort Lauderdale , Boston , Montreal , or Quebec .

How can travelers take advantage?

In 2024, the bulk of standby fares that Holland America is offering are for Alaskan voyages departing Seattle, Whittier, and Vancouver, as well as New England and Eastern Canada voyages departing from Boston, Montreal, and Quebec City.

There are also a handful of transatlantic sailings departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, including an extended six-week sailing in November that meanders through dozens of Mediterranean ports in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and Egypt, to name a few. Most of the dates for the standby itineraries stretch from May through September, with a few options in October and November as well.

It all sounds appealing, but there are a few factors travelers should keep in mind. “With this program, you've got to be extremely flexible in all aspects of your trip,” says Tanner Callais, founder of cruise travel advice site Cruzely . “Some of these cruises sail for extended periods of time, including up to 42 days,” which is the duration of that lengthy Mediterranean sailing. “You also don't know what sort of cabin you'll receive,” he says. “If you're someone that has to have a balcony room, then this might not be for you.

The type of cabin could, in fact, be a deal breaker for certain travelers. Holland America says it charges standby guests for an interior stateroom, a space as small as 143 square feet with no windows. But travelers could be assigned any category of room ranging up to a verandah stateroom, which ranges from 228 to 405 square feet with enough outdoor space to fit two deck chairs. However, it’s all based on availability.

“Travelers who want to benefit from a standby fare should keep in mind that once confirmed, Holland America Line assigns their room,” says Rob Clabbers, founder and president of the agency Q Cruise + Travel . “While that might result in savings, it means travelers may end up in the last remaining and likely less preferred location—above a theater or night club [or] all the way forward or aft. While this may work for some, it is definitely not recommended for those who fear seasickness, have mobility issues, would like to be close to travel companions, [or] want to be near or away from elevators,” he says.

Holland America Line also notes that these deals are intended for travelers who live within driving distance of the departure ports. “Booking a last-minute airline ticket could end up being more than the cost of the cruise,” Callais says. “That said, the fares are so low that if you have the flexibility, then it might be one of the best deals you'll ever find. This is especially the case if you're a solo traveler, as the double occupancy fare doesn't apply.”

Travelers will want to run the numbers on each voyage to ensure they’re receiving the best possible deal for enduring the hassle of last-minute arrangements. Some of the sailings do offer incredible value. “However, on other sailings, the savings are not nearly as great,” Clabbers says. “If you or your travel advisor do some research, you may very well find some sailings at fares that are similar or even lower than the $49 per day standby fare—and without the restrictions.”

For instance, it’s possible to book a seven-day Alaska sailing that departs June 9 on Holland America’s website, with prices for an inside room starting at $349 per person, plus $310 in taxes, fees, and port expenses. “You even get a $50 credit to spend on board per room, but the biggest advantage is that you can confirm this several weeks before sailing, so you can fine-tune your travel plans rather than have to wait until the very last minute,” says Clabbers.

One of the better deals would be the 42-day Mediterranean Cruise leaving from Fort Lauderdale in November. Booking that sailing outright, “you would pay $5,479 plus $435 in taxes, fees, and port expenses per person based on double occupancy for an Inside room,” Clabbers says. But, if you sail the itinerary on standby and get confirmed, “you would pay a total $2,058 per person plus taxes. Obviously that would be a good deal.”

Will other cruise lines start offering standby prices?

You might be wondering why a cruise line would offer fares as low as $49 a day. At the end of the day, more guests on board means ships generate more money. “Obviously, a cruise line wants to sail with every cabin filled to maximize revenue and efficiency of scale,” says Callais. “If a room sails empty, the cruise line is still using the same amount of fuel and paying the crew and captain the same wage.”

The majority of new ships break even at 50% occupancy, while older ships need 80% occupancy to hit that benchmark, according to Tom Baker , president of Cruise Center .

Carnival Corporation, which is Holland America’s parent company, saw an average revenue of $236 per passenger each cruise day in 2023, while its direct expenses per passenger was about $156 each day, according to Callais’ analysis of the company’s earnings report . But whereas most of a line’s expenses are fixed, there’s always more room to increase revenue with more passengers, who are bound to spend more on the ship. “In other words, even if this standby rate is less than the cruise line would make at a normal rate, it's still better to earn a little money from it than zero,” Callais says.

Although Holland America is the only major cruise line currently offering the standby fare, it could catch on at other companies if it brings in enough money. “Like most industries, cruise lines are constantly looking at competitors and seeing what they are offering or doing that might benefit their business,” Callais says. “If it works, it will get picked up by others.”

Regardless, it’s likely that standby offerings will stay limited to certain lines, as well as specific ports and times of year. “If the program trains too many passengers to just wait and cruise standby, then that could actually end up hurting the bottom line,” Callais says.

2023 Kia Sorento PHEV Yearlong Review: How Does Its Safety Tech Perform?

From adaptive cruise control to blind-spot monitors and rainy-day driving aids, here’s what to know about the Sorento’s safety creds.

Even a great infotainment system isn’t enough to make a traffic-ridden road trip less taxing. For that, you need systems like Kia’s Highway Driving Assist (HDA). Several months into our yearlong test of the 2023 Kia Sorento PHEV, this feature has proven invaluable, easing the burden of long drives with its capable adaptive cruise control and lane keeping systems. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this tech? And how well do the other driver assist and safety features perform? Let’s explore how the Sorento makes us feel secure on the road.

016 2023 kia sorento phev dashboard

Highway Driving Assist: Kia, Take the Wheel

Just as it was in our yearlong 2020 Hyundai Sonata and 2021 Sorento testers, HDA remains a reliable companion for long commutes and road trips. The adaptive cruise control maintains a consistent speed and distance from the car ahead. When the vehicle ahead changes into another lane, the Sorento reacts smoothly and relatively quickly to keep up with the flow of traffic. The precise steering assist also inspires confidence, eliminating much of the constant steering effort needed while navigating highway curves. HDA keeps the car within its lane, although if unchecked, it sometimes wants to veer to the leftmost part of the lane. The updated 2024 Kia Sorento offers a more advanced version of this semi-autonomous driving system called HDA 2, which adds lane change assist functionality.

Keep in mind these aren’t hands-free driving systems like GM’s Super Cruise or Ford’s BlueCruise. HDA requires the driver’s hands to remain on the wheel, or else it will eventually deactivate after warnings.

Rain or Shine

They say Californians can’t drive in the rain. But I felt at ease piloting the Sorento through the many downpours that have hit San Diego this winter (staying away from the worst storms, of course). Rain-sensing wipers engage automatically, clearing the field of view in an SUV that already offers good forward visibility with its expansive windows. The LED projector headlights with automatic high-beams provide excellent illumination that covers an expansive area around the vehicle. These bright lights make me feel safe driving at night down a dark road or in unfavorable weather conditions.

2023 Kia Sorento PHEV Blind Spot View Monitor

Watch Your Blind Spots With This Handy Feature

Blind-spot view monitor acts like another set of eyes when you’re changing lanes. After so many years of switching lanes without this tool, though, I am only now getting into the habit of using it on a regular basis.

Find a car near you

Activate a turn signal, and a view of the lane you’re looking to enter pops up in the instrument cluster display. If you click the left turn signal, for instance, the left gauge will show a real-time video of the lane to your left. Normally it provides a clear picture, but the feature doesn’t always work well in the rain as droplets block the view.

2023 Kia Sorento PHEV 360 degree camera

The 360-Degree Camera Is Gold

As its name suggests, this feature provides a 360-degree view around the car to facilitate parking maneuvers. It’s a lifesaver for navigating this large SUV into a tight spot. The camera resolution isn’t the sharpest, but it’s suitable for the job. There’s a handy button to activate the 360-degree camera when you start a parking maneuver, but given how often we use the feature, we wish it were in a more obvious place rather than in the middle of the lower center console. It activates automatically when you reverse.

Kia Access App

Kia’s smartphone app has many practical uses. It can remotely start the engine or lock the doors, plus it provides info on your vehicle’s charging status. But with features like Find My Car, it’s also a great tool to keep track of where you parked or where your family members are. Click on the 360 View Gallery icon, and you’ll receive pictures of what’s to the front back, left, and right of your parked car. We’ve even used an identical feature on our long-term Genesis G90 to spy on our car while it was at the dealer.

Other Helpful Tools

Another helpful feature on long drives, Driver Attention Warning keeps tabs on how alert the driver is behind the wheel. If it senses fatigue in the driver, it will suggest taking a break. I’ve also long enjoyed the Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, which provides a gentle audio alert when the vehicle in front of you has moved ahead.

036 2023 kia sorento phev

How Does the Sorento PHEV Perform in Crash Testing?

Unfortunately, the Sorento PHEV hasn’t been rated by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Other Sorento variants have been tested, though. Gas and traditional hybrid versions of the 2023 Sorento received an unimpressive four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. However, the non-PHEV 2023 Sorento made a strong showing with IIHS, earning Good scores in all crash categories evaluated.

Although our Sorento isn’t equipped with the most advanced tech Kia offers, its set of driver assistance features make us feel safe on the road. We hope the refreshed Sorento improves on its predecessor’s NHTSA safety score; only the 2024 Sorento Hybrid has been fully tested, and it likewise received a four-star overall rating out of a possible five stars.
